Rialto ends fiscal year with loss Board seeks marquee solution

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre board heard Wednesday that it ended the fiscal year with a loss of about $9,000, which included $171,000 spent on a new marquee that was stopped in mid-production.

The unfinished marquee may not be a total loss.

Parts already built may be used if the board goes ahead with the idea of upgrading the existing marquee with digital lights and an electronic message board.

Rialto administrators are seeking price estimates for an upgrade of the existing marquee and will report to the board when it next meets on Aug. 26.

Once the board hears the potential price tag, it will decide whether to move forward with the plan to upgrade the existing marquee rather than

finish the one sitting in pieces at the Indiana factory of Landmark Sign Group. The upgrade was recommended by a special committee created to examine the marquee controversy.

Board member David Thornton, chairman of the Finance Committee, said the marquee was not the only financial issue faced in the last fiscal year, which ended in June.

“We had tight cash flows for several reasons,” said Thornton, mentioning also a slow start to ticket sales for the last theater season.

But Rialto General Manager Randy Green said after the meeting that the money spent on the marquee otherwise would have been available to pay bills and do needed maintenance at the theater.

Green said the final costs of the marquee will not be known until the board makes a final decision and the bids come in on the work. He said he did not know the full costs of upgrading the existing marquee or where the money will come from.

“I don’t have a dollar to pay for that yet,” Green said.

If the Rialto board, whose official name is the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, moves ahead with an upgrade of the existing marquee, it will go out for bids on electrical work and painting needed for the project.

Baby left in hot car Tuesday is doing well; outlook looks good

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The 7-month-old baby boy who went into cardiac arrest after being left Tuesday in a hot car in Joliet is doing well.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said Wednesday afternoon the baby’s condition and outlook is good.

“I spoke to the hospital this morning, and he is doing well,” Roechner said. “He is still on [intravenous] fluids. But doctors don’t believe there will be any lasting effects from the incident.”

The baby wasn’t breathing Tuesday morning when his mother, who didn’t realize she left him in the car with the windows rolled up, found him. The mother yelled to a parking enforcement officer that her child wasn’t breathing, and the officer called for help.

An ambulance crew was

able to revive him on the scene and took him to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. But he went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The baby’s temperature was 108 degrees at the scene.

As of Wednesday afternoon the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office was still reviewing whether to pursue charges against the mother, spokeswoman Mallory Hewlett said.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services also has opened up an investigation, which was pending Wednesday afternoon, spokeswoman Veronica Resa said.

“We’ve had no prior contact with the family,” Resa said.

Roechner said police were in the process of simulating Tuesday’s incident with the same vehicle as of noon Wednesday.

The temperature outside at the time the baby was in the vehi-

cle Tuesday was between 85 and 87 degrees.

On Tuesday, the woman had been out with her boyfriend, who is the baby’s father, and two other children along with the baby. They drove back to their residence where the father and two other children got out of the car, Roechner said.

The woman thought all of the children left the car at that residence, police have said, before driving to downtown Joliet and parking in the Joliet Public Library parking lot about 10:05 a.m. She then went into a financial office to arrange a loan, Roechner said.

The boyfriend attempted several times unsuccessfully to call the mother while she was doing business. At noon, the mother left the bank office and began checking her phone messages, when she learned her boyfriend was asking about the whereabouts of the child.

JJC created degree program in partnership with businesses, elected officials

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – TransCanada representative Peter Jaskoski sees the $10,000 his energy infrastructure company donated to a new Joliet Junior College degree program as more than a donation.

It’s an investment.

Earlier this year, JJC introduced the operations engineering and technician program that will begin this fall.

The program was the result of a partnership between the community college, several businesses and local elected officials to respond to the needs for more employees trained for jobs offered by industrial and energy companies.

TransCanada gave JJC $10,000 on Wednesday to pay for industrial maintenance and technology equipment for the program. Jaskoski said because the company has a Tinley Park office that manages daily regional operations for two big pipelines, this donation was an investment in a future workforce.

“We view this as an opportunity to become part of the Joliet community and help it grow for generations to come,” he said. “For employees to come to school here, get the skills and the expertise needed to go out and fill these positions that are becoming available. Energy is something that’s not going away.”

He said although energy industries are “more or less impervious to economic ups and downs,” employees eventually retire and industry leaders need to look at how to bring in newer employees.

She said in Grundy County there are 20 times the amount of energy jobs and five times the amount of chemical jobs

compared to similar markets.

“I always call and consider this area the energy and chemical corridor of America,” she said.

The jobs students will

go for in the petrochemical, nuclear and manufacturing industries are expected to be lucrative.

Rezin said the earning potential for operation engineers ranges between $65,000 to $95,000. The growth for

that job, as well as operation technicians, is expected to grow at an estimated 15 percent or more in several years, she said.

IDOT works out deal to take over Arsenal Road

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation is dropping its longsought attempt to reopen a controversial railroad crossing in Elwood, citing a deal with Will County to take over Arsenal Road that secures a direct state route for overweight trucks heading to and from the nearby intermodals.

Before an Illinois Commerce Commission hearing Wednesday in Chicago, IDOT’s attorney filed a motion withdrawing the agency’s request for additional hearings in the case over safety at the Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing.

The motion states the jurisdictional road transfer “satisfies IDOT’s concerns about overweight truck access after the [Walter Strawn Drive] closure.”

The state’s takeover of Arsenal Road between Interstate 55 and Baseline Road would allow IDOT to make permanent upgrades to accommodate heavy truck traffic in and out of the area’s intermodal facilities, according to an IDOT news release.

“The magnitude of the

Walter Strawn Drive closure demanded a thorough look at the facts,” IDOT Acting Secretary Blankenhorn said in the news release. “After working with local stakeholders and examining all of the issues involved, this decision allows everyone to move forward on developing long-term transportation solutions for the area.”

The Illinois Commerce Commission’s closure of the railway crossing at Walter Strawn Drive earlier this year erased a major entry point for overweight trucks to the CenterPoint Intermodal Center parks in Joliet and Elwood.

Since that time, the county was forced to issue overweight permits for trucks – but on a temporary basis – to keep commerce moving in and out of the intermodals.

IDOT’s motion stated the state had no guarantee that the county would continue its temporary permitting, leading the state agency to seek the jurisdictional transfer.

In its motion to withdraw, IDOT did note an increase in accidents near the interchange at I-55 and I-80 since the Walter Strawn Drive closure.

Right now, however, it is too soon to tell.”

Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. said he hopes the Will County Board will approve the jurisdictional transfer at its Aug. 20 meet-

ing, while adding that a longterm solution is needed to address traffic safety issues in the region.

Michael Scotti, attorney for CenterPoint Properties, said the Oak Brook-based developer also remains concerned about increased truck traffic in areas other than Walter Strawn Drive. But he said he also wants to review IDOT’s regional traffic impact report, released Wednesday.

“I think we’d like to work diligently to make sure the al-

ternate route is selected and implemented,” Scotti said of the Arsenal Road takeover.

Gates at the Elwood crossing were broken nearly 50 times in 2013, and village of Elwood officials have tried for some time to steer semitrailer traffic away from the area despite opposition from CenterPoint and trucking companies.

Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes said in a news release closing the crossing has created a safer environment in the area.

“We are extremely happy that IDOT had a change of heart and decided not to pursue re-opening this rail crossing, which would have most certainly led to tragedy,” Hayes said in the release.

The parties involved in the ICC case – the village of Elwood, Union Pacific, ICC staff, CenterPoint, and Will County – have until Aug. 19 to respond to IDOT’s motion, according to ICC spokesperson Kelly Klopp. A status hearing is scheduled for Sept. 16.

In the meantime, the ICC hearings on long-term solutions will continue. The full ICC board will vote at a later date on the motion filed Wednesday.

Groups seek hearing over Illiana tax break request

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com Environmental protection groups are seeking a public hearing to address a recent filing by the Illinois Department of Revenue requesting tax breaks for the seemingly dead Illiana Expressway and the South Suburban Airport projects.

In a letter to the IDR dated Wednesday, the Environmental Law & Policy Center along with 20 other signatories, has requested a public hearing with the Illinois Department

of Revenue regarding IDR’s proposed rules creating sales tax exemptions for materials used for the proposed Illiana Tollway and proposed Peotone airport.

Earlier this month, Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration sought approval for tax breaks for building materials that would be used to construction the 47-mile tollway connecting Interstate 55 in Wilmington to Interstate 65 in Indiana, as well as the Peotone airport.

Rauner appears to be moving forward with actions related to the proposed Illiana Tollway when he publicly stated that he requested it be removed from the Illinois Dept. of Transportation’s multi-year plan,” Judith Nemes, a spokesperson for ELPC, said in an email.

It’s unclear whether the request, which wasn’t filed within the allowed 14-day time frame, will be granted, Nemes said.

The letter states the public hearing should be granted because the public is intensely interested in this issue.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly insisted earlier this week that the Illiana is still on ice. She said the filing is part of the rule-making process as required by 2010 legislation passed by lawmakers allowing for tax exemptions for building materials used in the Illiana project.

Minooka, police reach contract agreement

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – After six months of negotiations, village trustees approved Tuesday night a contract with Minooka Police Chapter 348 of the Metropolitan Alliance of Police.

Trustee Terry Houchens voted “present,” while Trustee Rudy Martin was absent. The vote passed 4-1.

Houchens later said he voted in that manner because he wasn’t available when the contract changes were discussed, so he didn’t know all the details.

“I know we were close,” he said.

The three-year contract, which runs through 2018, provides for a 3.5 percent raise and additional steps to the department’s raise program to bring it more in line with market rates.

Village Administrator Dan Duffy, following the meeting, said major issues were identified and the parties came out

with an agreement that benefited both sides.

Thanks to Police Chapter President Kiedra Meece and the village management team, they were able to iron out the agreement without any cost of attorney fees or outside consultants, Duffy said.

“Anytime you can sit down with co-workers and representatives without outside [assistance] is a huge savings for the overall process and the residents of Minooka,” Duffy said.

Police Chief Justin Meyer echoed Duffy’s comments, saying the agreement is fair for both sides.

Meyer also thanked Meece, as well as police stewards Officer Ken Briley and Officer Erik Larson.

“It’s the true meaning of collective bargaining,” Meyer said.

Isaac Orr, an intern for state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, attended the village board meeting to hear concerns

from local officials, which he said he would take back to the senator.

Village trustees talked mainly about the state’s budget woes and how it’s going to affect local government. The state is looking to not only reduce local municipalities’ share of the state income tax, but also considering a freeze on local levies, Duffy said. “[It’s] a great concern, both actions happening in tandem,” he said. “Local governments pass balanced budgets year after year. It’s disheartening to see the state balance their budget on the back of local government.”

Trustees also discussed the delay in finishing construction on the Minooka Road bridge.

IDOT has until December to complete the work, per the contract, Duffy said. The village hoped the project would be done sooner.

Trustee Dennis Martin said the state isn’t rushing to finish the job so it can hold off paying for the project.

Ridge Road work to begin

Village officials were notified earlier Tuesday that Grundy County will begin work next week on Ridge Road, from the railroad viaduct to Route 6.

Drivers can expect delays from lane closures in onefourth mile increments, Duffy said. The county plans to use tar and chip as well as microsurfacing on the road.

For the first time in years, Trustee Houchens voted to approved payment to the state for national pollution discharge permits, but not before he was clear that they would be paid under protest.

For 17 years the fees have annually been paid in protest because village officials believe they are a way for the state to balance its budget by passing costs down to taxpayers.

faculty gave local elected officials, TransCanada representatives and Illinois Secretary of Education Elizabeth Purvis a tour of several classrooms to show how students are being trained for jobs. One of the classrooms they took a peek at featured a water pump lab.

Jeff Bradford, industrial maintenance technology program lead instructor, said he was excited about the donation from TransCanada, saying those contributions help educate the students.

“It’s always a struggle with the college’s budgeting and state funding. To have a company write a check allows us to get stuff like this,” he said, referring to the water pump lab.

When Purvis took on the role as state education secretary, she said Gov. Bruce Rauner told her he wanted to see more students in the state graduate from schools to become residents with rewarding and meaningful careers.

The OET program is the best example of that, she said.

She said this program will keep the “best and brightest” in Illinois and could be copied statewide.

The Lemont Village Board approved an addition to La Dolce Vita in downtown Lemont during its July 27 meeting.

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Lemont Village Board approved resurfacing four streets at a cost of $309,374.04 during the board’s meeting Monday.

The project will involve resurfacing Ledochowski Street, from Schultz Street to McCarthy Road; Crestview Drive, from Keepataw Drive to Hillview Drive; Holmes Street, from McCarthy Road to Main Street; and Julia Street, from McCarthy Road to Main Street.

The project is an addition to village’s capital improvements budget that the board approved along with its budget in April.

The village had not included paying for some of its planned road projects while it waited to see whether the state’s budget

would cut municipal funding.

“We were hopeful that the [state] budget would be resolved by July 1,” said Village Administrator George Schafer.

With a state budget still not approved, the village had to move forward with the project to complete it before construction season ended, he said.

He said the village is still taking a cautious approach with its budget, but will be able to afford the repaving project even if the state makes drastic cuts to the amount of funding it gives municipalities.

Ledochowski and Crestview were already planned to be repaved after road construction to replace water mains, and Julia and Holmes were included as the next two streets most in need of repaving, he said.

Although the village is not receiving motor fuel and video

gaming tax revenue while the state budget is at a stalemate, Schafer said the village has enough money in its fund balance and working cash fund that it is not in financial danger.

In other board action, the board approved rezoning the property at 15800 New Ave. to the Downtown District.

With the rezoning, owners of the property, commonly known as the Old Mill Shops, will be able to convert the second floor into apartments.

The board also appointed new members to two of its commissions.

Matt Zolecki was appointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Matt Brady was appointed to the police commission. He has previously served on the Liquor Control Commission.

By Hannah Kohut When board members of the Heritage House Homeowners’ Association in Joliet learned that Celtic Property Management could take over their management headaches, the decision was a no-brainer.

Despite state budget stalemate, Lemont moves forward with projects

JOLIET – The Joliet Public Library is working with the Northern Illinois University Center for Governmental Studies to conduct a telephone survey which will help the library get a better understanding of how it can provide the best possible services to Joliet residents.

The information gathered from this survey will assist in the development of a strategic plan for the library, according to a news release from the library.

In the next few weeks, residents may receive a phone call from CGS staff asking to

complete this survey. The survey will include questions about each household’s reading habits and other leisure activities, as well as questions about library use.

“We are interested in your point of view, even if you don’t use the library,” library staff said in the news release.

“If you are called, please help the library plan for the future by taking the time to share your thoughts.”

Additionally, both branches of the Joliet Library will not open until noon on Aug. 7 because of staff training in the morning. The library will close at its usual time of 5 pm.

vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Shorewood trustees Tuesday paved the way for Tyson Motor Corp. to expand its car dealership lot in Shorewood by vacating a rarely used street.

The Village Board approved the sale of Mary Street at 309 Channahon Street at an appraised price of $17,424 to Tyson, which had already bought the adjacent lot and bulldozed an existing multiunit house.

The board also approved the rezoning of the bulldozed lot from R-5 Multiple Family Residence District to B-4 Automotive Service District.

“That [part of Mary Street] has never really been a street,” Mayor Rick Chapman said Wednesday. “We vacat-

ed it to allow them to expand because it’s not being used by anybody.”

In addition to a site plan for the new lot, trustees also approved the temporary use of two vacant, paved lots located from 205 Earl Road to 207 Earl Road, and 300 Earl Road, for Tyson. The lots will store Tyson’s surplus vehicles until completion of the Channahon Street dealership expansion.

Sales tax

Trustees also agreed to put a sales tax increase up for vote at the next village meeting. The increase was on Tuesday’s agenda for a first read.

The sales tax increase, made possible by the successful April 7 referendum that granted Shorewood home rule status, would repeal a

capped nonhome rule sales tax of 1 percent and replace it with a home rule sales tax of 1.75 percent.

Village officials have said the purpose of the sales tax increase was to raise money to extend a pipeline carrying Lake Michigan water to the village in lieu of a rapidly depleting groundwater source.

The 0.75 percent increase would raise the total sales tax from 8 percent to 8.75 percent.

“All the trustees are up to speed on that,” said Chapman, who expects it to pass at the Aug. 11 board meeting. “The extra [0.75 percent] won’t take effect until Jan. 1 next year.”

Chapman said the village must pass the increase at the village level before Oct. 1 for the change to take hold next year.

Nick Kachiroubas, a DePaul University political scientist, said Gidwitz’s critical comments raise the possibility of a primary election challenge from a conservative, although moderates like Kirk usually have a better chance to win statewide in Illinois, where Democrats still dominate the representation in the Legislature and U.S. House.

“That’s part of the reason we haven’t seen a more credible challenger is that they (conservatives) know they might not have the seat as a conservative seat, they have it at least as a Republican seat, and the conservatives control more of the national agenda at this point,” Kachiroubas said.

Pat Brady, the former Illinois Republican Party chairman, said the party needs to “rally around” Kirk.

“He’s been a great senator,” Brady said. “He’s been a leader on national security issues.

He’s really tried to be bipartisan, which, in Illinois, is important. He’s been good on the

environment. He was way out front on the marriage equality issue, so he fits the state perfectly, and he’s a great candidate for us.”

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and Tim Schneider, current chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, also expressed support for Kirk’s re-election bid in statements late Tuesday.

Kirk has received widespread financial support, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, has been working to get him re-elected. This week, Kirk was asked to sponsor an amendment on reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank – an apparent effort to help the Illinois senator.

A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, a prominent Democrat in the race, declined comment. However, her campaign has launched an online ad entitled “Mark Kirk’s Outrageous Statements,” highlighting not only the recent comments, but exaggerations he told about his military record that became part of his 2010 campaign for Senate.

Andrea Zopp, a former federal prosecutor also preparing a Democratic run, released a statement saying that Republicans, regardless of who they nominate, are the “fundamental problem” for failing to endorse issues important to middle-class families.

Gidwitz, a former candidate for Illinois governor, later retracted the statement and said Kirk was the best candidate for the job. He declined to elaborate when contacted Wednesday by The Associated Press.

Kirk also previously suggested that federal bureaucrats were collecting personal data on Supreme Court justices and members of Congress. And, last winter, he called for putting “a number of coffins” outside Democrats’ offices if a terrorist attack resulted from a govern-

• Marcus Mathis, 41, of the 500 block of Eastern Avenue in Joliet, was arrested Tuesday by the Joliet Police Department on charges of possession of a controlled substance and disregarding a traffic control device.

• Douglas N. Morrow, 54, of the 200 block of East South Street in Dwight, was arrested Tuesday on charges of aggravated driving under the influence, driving under the influence, speeding, improper lane usage, operating a vehicle with expired registration and using an electronic communication device.

• Chandler P. Patterson, 22, of the 2600 block of West Madison Avenue in Chicago, was arrested Tuesday by the Will County Sheriff’s Office on charges of burglary and counterfeit.

• Sean P. Becker, 26, of the 100 block of East Chapin Street in Morris, was arrested Tuesday by the Will County Forest Preserve Police Department on a charge of burglary.

Mary C. Larkin (nee Whitmer), age 68, passed away July 26, 2015 at Morris Hospital surrounded by her loving children.

She is survived by two daughters, Katie (Ken) Nelson of Joliet, Colleen (Art) Arias of Diamond; and one son, Robert W. Larkin of Morris. Mary was the much-loved and adored Grandma to seven grandchildren, Nicolas Arias, Ezequiel Arias, Junior Arias, Maxwell Arias, Alexia Arias, Amanda Nelson and Molly Nelson.

Mary was born on April 27, 1947 to the late Harry and Lois (Singletary) Whitmer in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

She was a graduate of St. Patrick Grade School and St. Francis Academy, Class of 1965.

On Oct. 16, 1965, Mary married Robert E. “Bob” Larkin at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Joliet. While married for nearly fifty years, they raised their family in Joliet before moving to the homestead they loved in Morris. Together they established their farming business throughout the Joliet, Minooka and Morris areas.

Mary worked as a telephone supervisor at Illinois Bell. As she and Bob started a family, her greatest joy became being a homemaker and devoted mother. The love for her family she exhibited every day through her nurturing, attentiveness and laughter.

Also surviving are two sisters, Jane (Joseph) Riggs of Joliet and Beth (Theodore) Poplawski of Shorewood; one brother, William (Mary) Whitmer of Joliet; one brother-in-law, Donald (Jo Beth) Larkin of Minooka; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob (November 8, 2014); brothers-in-law, Bernard (the late Mary) Larkin, Ronald Larkin; and step-mother, Jean (Kaffer) Whitmer.

Mary was a long time parishioner of the Church of St. Jude.

William R. White, former Tuskegee Airman, dies at 88 The ASSOCIATED PRESS SMITHFIELD, Va. – William R. White, a former member of the famed squadron of African-American pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen, has died. He was 88.

White was a humble family man who rarely talked about his war experiences, family members said Wednesday. White died July 24 at his home in Smithfield, his son Brandon White told

The Associated Press.

Brandon White and his sister, Inetha Holmes, said they did not learn that their father was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II until a couple of years ago. As children, they would ask him about an Army Air Corps photo that he had, but he would not say much about it.

“He wouldn’t go into detail about anything,” Brandon White said. “He was very

humble, humble to a fault.”

William White, a Smithfield native, was drafted into the Army Infantry in 1945. He transferred to the Army Air Corps, and then was assigned to the 99th Pursuit Squadron and 332nd Fighter Group. He said during a 2013 talk at the Isle of Wight County Museum that he serviced the unit’s planes to keep them in the air, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

The Tuskegee Airmen

were the U.S. military’s first African-American aviators.

The group went on to take part in more than 1,500 combat missions, earning more 96 Distinguished Flying Crosses.

In a 2013 interview with WVEC-TV, William White said he and his fellow Tuskegee Airmen had to fight two wars, one with the enemy and the other with racism.

“Everything we did we had to fight for it,” he said.

“And they wanted us to fail, but they forgot one thing.

We, as blacks, we were very gifted. And gifts come from whom? God. And that’s how we made it.”

Brandon White said his father did what he felt he had to do in regard to serving in the war.

“He would always say that, ‘America was the only home I know,’ ” he said.

She very much enjoyed living there, telling everyone “I kind of like being waited on!” and making new friends.

She was especially close to her table partner, Elma Tobey.

When Parkinson’s Disease affected her ability to care for herself, Ruth then moved to Miller Center in December 2010. The staff there enjoyed her positive attitude and witty comments.

Ruth is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Gary Dahn of Bonfield; her grand-daughter, Michelle (Tony) Harms of Pontiac; grandson, Jason Dahn of Bonfield; and great-grandson, Brayden Dahn of Momence. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Particularly close to Ruth are Judy (Larry) McCarty, Alan (Kathy) Arnstrom; Mary Ann (Ed) Cooper; and Karen (Lee) Blanchette. Judy, Alan, Mary Ann and Karen all lost their mothers many years ago and considered Ruth to be their “adopted” mother.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Thomas (Margaret), Eugene (Mae), Paul (Joyce), Elizabeth (Fred) Blatt and Margaret (Ed) Petersen; brother-in-law, Herman Smith, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Rina Smith (Charles) Ernst; niece, Cheryl Blatt Zdralevich; and nephew, James Raymond Smith. Her husband, Ray, died April 9, 2006.

Ruth will be remembered as a kind person always ready to bring food for a funeral dinner or to the house when there was a death, frequently sending cards to friends if they were ill or just having a difficult time, and always ready to listen. She will also be remembered as someone who was able to “roll with the punches” and adapt when she needed to. Lastly, Ruth loved visiting with friends and relatives and had a great sense of humor.

Born: April 27, 1926; in Symerton, IL Died: July 28, 2015; in Kankakee, IL Ruth Smith, age 89, of Wilmington, passed away Tuesday evening, July 28, 2015, at Miller Center in Kankakee, after a long illness from Parkinson’s disease.

Mary Ruth was born on April 27, 1926 in Symerton, Illinois to Gotfried and Eleanor (Kirk) Arnstrom, the fifth of six children. Her childhood home was on a farm in what eventually became the Joliet Arsenal north of Wilmington. The family moved to a farm near Peotone when the government purchased their land to build the Arsenal.

Ruth graduated from Joliet Township High School and then moved to Chicago to work in an insurance office. She married Raymond A. Smith of Wilmington on March 27, 1949 and made Wilmington her home for the next 58 years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, serving as an Elder and “funeral dinner lady”; belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, and volunteered at Kuzma Care Cottage. She was also very active in helping Ray plan the annual reunion of the 754th Field Artillery Battalion.

Ruth moved to Butterfield Court Assisted Living in Kankakee in 2007.

U of I chief defers salary program pending state budget

URBANA – The University of Illinois is suspending its annual merit-based salary increase program until the state budget impasse is settled, Champaign-Urbana campus president Timothy Killeen said.

The school usually announces the salary program in July for the coming academic year; the raises take effect in August.

“It is imprudent to determine a 2015-16 salary program without knowing the university’s state appropriation, and we do not know how long the Statehouse budget impasse will last,” Killeen wrote in an email Tuesday to employees, according to The News-Gazette.

Killeen said the school will revisit salaries once the state budget is resolved. Last year’s raises averaged 2.5 percent and cost about $27.6 million.

Mel Reynolds says he’ll plead not guilty to tax charges

CHICAGO – Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds said Wednesday he will plead not guilty to federal charges he failed to file income tax returns from 2009 to 2012.

U.S. court says drug-sniffing dog fails the smell test

CHICAGO – Lex the police dog from central Illinois is far from top dog in drug-sniffing skills.

That’s the core finding of a potentially influential new ruling from the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which considered the question of how much police should rely on their K-9 partners to justify searches

when a dog’s own competence, as in Lex’s case, is itself suspect.

The opinion stems from an appeal by Larry Bentley Jr., a St. Louis man serving 20 years in prison for drug possession. He argued the 20 kilograms of cocaine Bloomington police found in his car during a 2010 traffic stop derived from an illegal search triggered by Lex. While the court upheld the conviction, it repeatedly disparaged Lex and suggested it might have considered tossing Bentley’s conviction if police had relied solely on Lex’s nose.

Tuesday’s ruling pointed to records showing Lex nearly always signals drugs are present – 93 percent of the time. And it cited other figures that indicated he is frequently wrong – more than 40 percent of the time.

Hearing delayed for man accused of threatening mayor

CHICAGO – The arraignment for the driver of a ride-sharing service accused of threatening Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Facebook has been delayed.

The judge in Mohammad Waqas Khan’s case said in a notice that Wednesday’s hearing was canceled because Khan hadn’t been brought from jail to the federal courthouse in time.

The arraignment was reset for Thursday. Khan was expected to enter a plea to a charge of transmitting a threatening communication.

A federal complaint said the Glen Ellyn man wrote Emanuel had “led the city of Chicago down the road to perdition” and that he’d teach the mayor “a lesson.”

A judge ruled earlier that Khan should remain jailed. Defense

attorney Ellen Domph has said Khan’s words weren’t serious and could have been rap lyrics.

Exelon beats second-quarter profit forecasts

CHICAGO – Exelon Corp. on Wednesday reported second-quarter net income of $638 million.

The Chicago-based company said it had net income of 74 cents a share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 59 cents a share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 51 cents a share.

The energy company posted revenue of $6.51 billion in the period.

Minnesota dentist rarely told patients about his hunting

PAUL, Minn. – A Minnesota dentist who has become the target of worldwide outrage for hunting and killing a protected lion in Zimbabwe advised patients Wednesday to seek care elsewhere and said he rarely discussed his big-game hunting because it can be a “divisive and emotionally charged topic.”

Walter James Palmer remained secluded in the face of protests at his suburban Minneapolis clinic and intense condemnation online. He has not appeared in public since being identified Tuesday as a party to the lion’s death.

Palmer, whose practice offers general and cosmetic dentistry, is an active big-game hunter, with many kills to his name, some of them registered with hunting clubs.

The North Dakota native “enjoys all outdoor activities,” according to the biography page on his now-dark clinic website. “Anything allowing him to stay active and observe and photograph wildlife is where you will find Dr. Palmer when he [is] not in the office.”

In Zimbabwe, a hunting guide and a farm owner appeared in court on allegations they helped Palmer kill the lion named Cecil. And the head of Zimbabwe’s safari association said the big cat with

the black mane was lured into the kill zone and denied “a chance of a fair chase.”

The Zimbabwean men were accused of aiding Palmer, who reportedly paid $50,000 to track and kill a lion. Zimbabwe police have said they are looking for Palmer, whose exact whereabouts were unknown.

Palmer, 55, referenced the situation in a note to his patients. “I understand and respect that not everyone shares the same views on hunting,” he wrote in the letter, which was obtained by the local Fox television affiliate, KMSP. The married father of two was the subject of a 2009 New York Times article about biggame hunting in which he said he learned to shoot at age 5. The article said Palmer had a reputation for being capable of “skewering a playing card from 100 yards” with a compound bow and having “a purist’s reputation for his disinclination to carry firearms as backup.”

During the nighttime hunt, the Zimbabwean men tied a dead animal to their car to draw the lion out of a national park, said Johnny Rodrigues, chairman of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.

The American is believed to have shot the lion with a crossbow. The wounded cat was then tracked for 40 hours before Palmer fatally shot him with a gun, Rodrigues said.

“No longer will older Americans be denied the healing miracle of modern medicine,” Johnson said at the bill signing. “No longer will illness crush and destroy the savings that they have so carefully put away over a lifetime so that they might enjoy dignity in their later years.

No longer will young families see their own incomes, and their own hopes, eaten away simply because they are carrying out their deep moral obligations to their parents, and to their uncles, and their aunts.”

Fifty years later, virtually all seniors have coverage, a far higher rate than younger people.

“It’s hard to imagine a world without Medicare and Medicaid,” Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell said Wednesday at the official commemoration.

“Medicare and Medicaid aren’t just about health care; they are about who we are as a nation, about living up to our own values.”

Presidents and lawmakers have collaborated to expand Medicare benefits and shore up finances.

Medicaid, the federal-state program for low-income and disabled people, got off to a slower start, but now covers an estimated 69 million people, making it the largest government health program.

It pays for nearly half of U.S. births and a little over half of the nation’s nursing home bill.

expansions for children that preceded it, broke the link between Medicaid and welfare.

In some states, Medicaid’s coverage for children reaches up into the middle class.

About 1 in 3 children, regardless of income, are covered

by Medicaid, says the Kaiser Family Foundation. Among poor children, that rises to 3 out of 4.

President Barack Obama’s health care law expanded Medicaid to cover low-income, working-age adults with no children living at home, a major group that had been left out by safety-net programs.

Medicaid has evolved into a blanket program for all low-income people.

Then: Medicare did not cover prescription drugs.

Now: Prescription coverage took effect in 2006 under Republican President George W. Bush. Obama’s health care law strengthened the drug benefit by gradually eliminating a coverage gap known as the “doughnut hole.”

“It’s the typical American style of doing things,” said economist Gail Wilensky, Medicare administrator under President George H.W. Bush. “Add a little here, add a little there. It’s messy, but it’s how we do things.”

To the Editor: I’m so tired of those people who say nothing of importance is being done in Springfield.

Didn’t they just last week allow bobcat hunting and put an end to Happy Hour restrictions?

This shows that both parties and the governor can work together on those enormous issues.

Now if they could solve some of the more mundane problems, such as the budget.

On the day of the release of the first video from the Center for Medical Progress – which showed a Planned Parenthood doctor, over wine and a salad, talking about harvesting the organs of aborted children – one woman posted this to Planned Parenthood’s Facebook page: “I am simply sick. And to casually have this conversation eating and drinking wine.

I have been an advocate a long time. ... I consider the decision I made at 16 to have an abortion at (P)lanned (P)arenthood.

“The reality of abortion is harsh, and the sorrow people who have been involved with abortion carry is often hidden,” Grizzetti told me. “The videos reveal the hidden tragedy of each abortion. This is reason for greater compassion.

We don’t have to be the pro-life movement and the pro-choice movement. We can be generous Americans helping one another flourish, protecting the most innocent and vulnerable, whoever they may be.

And one other thing: If you are pregnant right now and need help, there are people who will help you. Visit a Women’s Care Center or similar organization. When I dropped by one in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Ann Manion and Anne Koehl emphasized to me their agenda: They are there for what a woman needs.

They are there to help. Not to lecture. Not to proselytize. Not

to judge. Don’t feel ashamed or be afraid. With that approach, they’ve gone from handing out diapers to saving lives.

Eleanor McCullen has been going to Planned Parenthood in Boston for 15 years. She stands outside with a grandmother’s smile. She’s there to say that is another choice. She offers her number and help, as well, to the women who walk out, having left something precious behind. “We’re a generous country,” she once told me. “But we’re not generous to the child in the womb” who is often “the poorest of the poor.”

With these latest videos, and the pain they expose, there is an opportunity to give what has been denied by law and culture: Hope, love, and mercy.

There is freedom in being hidden no more. And there is a future for life.

Pettersen birdies last five holes to win Open

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A lot of veteran golfers still are seeking their initial run of five consecutive birdies or the first round where they finish with a 66.

Madasyn Pettersen had been disappointed she hadn’t been able to accomplish either feat yet – and she’s just 15 years old.

But on Wednesday, the home-schooled high school sophomore from Rockford got her wish and, in the process, easily ran away with the championship at the 21st annual Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open at Mistwood Golf Club.

Pettersen capped a round where she put together a pair of 33s by collecting birdies on the final five holes to give her nine birdies for the day and a five-stroke victory over top professional Chelsea Harris and fellow amateur Brooke Ferrell.

“What really means a lot to me is that I finally broke my personal records,” Pettersen said. “I’ve shot 68 and 67 tons of times but always bogeyed the last hole, and it was so disappointing. I finally got a 66 and five in a row after getting four birdies in a row so many times.

It means a lot to me, having my family and my sister here. It was a really fun day.”

Pettersen shot a 68 on Monday to take the opening-day lead, but a 74 on Tuesday created a three-way tie for the top spot along with Ember Schuldt and Harris.

Paired with Harris during the final round, Pettersen fell three strokes back after four holes as the Illinois State University assistant coach, originally from Channahon, jumped out to a -4 start for the day through the first five holes.

But Pettersen responded with three birdies in four holes. And after back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12, she got hot again going into Kelpie’s Corner on 14 and continued her run of birdies throughout the remaining holes.

“It all started on Hole 14,” Pettersen said. “They put us all the way back to hit over

the water, and the wind was in our face. I was like, ‘This is so scary. Oh my gosh, please hit the green.’ So I did, and then I made my putt, and I then I’m like, ‘OK,’ and I birdied my next hole. On 18, I did go for it in two and took out a driver, because I wanted to get a 66 today.”

After a 34 on the front nine, Harris finished with a 37 to give her a 71 for the day. That gave her a 213 total and one-

stroke advantage over Schuldt for top professional honors.

“She played lights out, and I got outplayed today,” Harris said of Pettersen. “It’s not like I played bad, but she made five birdies coming in, and she’s a great player. I had it early, and then I lost it. I got tired and maybe lost focus a little bit, but I got it back together eventually.

“I love this tournament and play well here every year. The

golf course is great, and Mr. (Jim) McWethy is doing an amazing job. It’s a fun event, and they make everyone feel special.”

Ferrell, who competes at the University of Wisconsin, shot a 2-under-par 70 to finish in a tie for second place with Harris. After opening with a 38, she closed with a 32.

Schuldt played even on the day to take fourth with a 214; Dana Gattone fired a 69 to finish with a 216 total; and Bing Singhsumalee turned in an even-par 72 to claim sixth place with a 217. Schuldt is a University of Illinois graduate, Gattone is a member of the Illini squad, and Singhsumalee will join that program this fall.

Bolingbrook’s Jessica Yuen, the two-time defending Class AA champion who competes for Neuqua Valley and already has committed to play at the University of Missouri, claimed seventh place after firing a 72 to finish with a 218 total. She posted nines of 38

and 34.

“Yesterday was a little rough, so I wanted to come out today and perform better and keep it close to even, and I’m pretty proud of how it turned out,” Yuen said. “It was a little rough start, but the finish is what mattered, and the result was better than yesterday.

“I’m pretty lucky that I’ve gotten into the University of Missouri and everything has worked out. My coach [John Platt] was on my bag for the past two days, and he’s helped me a ton. He was the one who’s helped me with colleges, so I give a big shout-out to him.”

Leighann Cabush and McKenzie Lyng tied for eighth place at 220, while Lexi Harkins and Danielle Lemek turned in scores of 221 to finish tied for 10th.

Katie Pius and Nattapari Siritrai had 222 totals to tie for 12th, Morgan Kukla and Jenna Pearson posted scores of 223 to tie for 14th, and Jenna Hunter had a 224 to finish 16th.

In 2014, Mistwood Golf Club was named one of the top “Renovations of the Year” by Golf Magazine and has picked up other prestigious honors for the work it did on its course.

The new clubhouse, which will be finished at the end of September or early October, might earn Mistwood more awards.

The clubhouse appears to be two separate buildings from the outside, but it actually is one 28,000-square foot building attached by a basement.

In the west section of the building, a pro shop will be located on the main floor, while the sales and other offices are on the second floor. The basement will hold locker rooms and cart storage.

The other side of the building aims to appeal to golfers and nongolfers alike.

“In the big building, you have a practice facility, restaurant, sports bar, everything that a good, first-class club-

“We’ll go as far as steaks, chops, chicken, fish, an assortment of salads and soups.

There will also be some special

things that are Scottish. We don’t want to give the impression that it’s not a Scottish or an Irish restaurant.”

It also has a defined banquet area that can accommodate 250 people, or can be enlarged by moving two walls to accommodate more than 300 people.

Everything in the building is designed to be top class, starting from the stucco and stone color blend like the one used at Whistling Straits’ clubhouse in Wisconsin to the extravagant light fixtures and the quality flooring. Each room is designed to feel more like a classy restaurant than a plain building.

And if the fixtures and quality of the building doesn’t make you consider booking an event at the clubhouse, the view might.

“You have a view that expands the entire golf course and the entire area,” McWethy said. “I can’t imagine anyone coming here as a potential customer for any activity to come here and not be ready to write a check. One thing that might chase people away is the price. We’re not going to be cheap. We shouldn’t be, though. We’re probably one of the best opportunities around.”

People have the chance to host an event in the designated banquet area, or they can even hold an event outside. There are three outdoor patios that face the golf course.

One called “The Courtyard” is in between the two buildings. It is about 4,100 square feet and is paved with landscape around it. According to McWethy, it will be an ideal place to hold an outdoor event like a wedding.

When all of its renovations are done, Mistwood hopes to impress nongolfers, golfers and even tournaments. With everything that has been done, McWethy believes his course can compete with others in Illinois.

“We definitely plan to do more tournaments,” McWethy said. “We’re not exactly sure of what those would be at this point. I don’t think that we would ever host a major... I could see a state amateur, the Illinois men’s open. I can even see perhaps some national tournaments, maybe not professional but at the amateur level.

“The idea is we’re going to emerge as a golf course as probably one of the top five public courses in the state of Illinois. That’s my entire goal: to be the very best. I think that we’re going to be there.”

ROMEOVILLE – There’s a saying: “If you’re going to do something, do it right.”

Mistwood Golf Club owner Jim McWethy must have had that in mind when he decided to redo his golf course.

“We’ve been going crazy for the last four to five years with the amount of work that we’ve done,” McWethy said. “We’ve taken a nice golf course and a really awful clubhouse and converted it into one of the top golf courses in the area.

And the clubhouse, from what everybody says that has had tours, there’s nothing like it.

“We want everyone – especially nongolfers – to feel invited here. Yes, we’re a great golf course, but we want to attract everybody. Especially with the banquets, we expect to reach out to a 20-, 30-mile radius with banquets for wedding receptions or any type of receptions.”

If the clubhouse become anything like what McWethy described, it will be as beautiful inside as it’s starting to look outside and as good as he’s made the golf course look.

About five years ago, McWethy decided the Mistwood golf clubhouse needed an update. After finding out the new clubhouse would have been sited too close to the third green, he had to change his plans.

He had to relocate the third hole so that the clubhouse wouldn’t be “peppered with golf balls,” and that means tearing up part of the course.

“I said, ‘If we were going to start tearing up our golf course, why don’t we just tear up the whole thing and get it all done at once?’ ” McWethy said.

“So we did the whole course.

We started four years ago. We built this [the Performance Center] from scratch, and it started off as a small building where people were supposed to hit golf balls during the winter – and look what happened.

It’s a much bigger, much nicer facility.

“The course was finished, which included redoing the irrigation system, redoing the

Lester strikes out 14 to lead Cubs over Rockies

CHICAGO – Jon Lester said he wasn’t counting his K’s, but he sure dominated like a big-time, big-money starter.

Lester (6-8) struck out 14, one shy of his career high and the most for a Cubs pitcher in more than a decade, leading the Cubs over the Colorado Rockies, 3-2, Wednesday.

The 6-foot-4 left-hander struck out seven of his first eight hitters and nine of the first 14. He

allowed two runs, five hits and one walk in eight innings.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon saluted Lester’s most impressive outing since he signed a six-year, $155 million free agent deal with Cubs in the offseason.

“That was the best performance all year,” Maddon said.

Lester’s strikeout high was set for Boston on May 3 last year against Oakland. He became the first Cubs pitcher to strike out 14 since Mark Prior had 16 on Sept. 30, 2004.

White Sox win seventh straight, beat Red Sox

BOSTON – Adam Eaton opened the game with a home run, Jose Quintana pitched 6 1-3 solid innings and the White Sox beat the Boston Red Sox, 9-2, on Wednesday night for their seventh straight win.

Eaton and Melky Cabrera both had three hits, including RBI singles. Alexei Ramirez hit a solo homer for the Sox, who built a 6-0 lead and chased Boston starter Rick Porcello in the third inning.

Mike Napoli homered and drove in two runs for the Red Sox, who have lost 12 of 14.

Quintana (6-9) allowed two runs and six hits, striking out three and walking one. He gave up Napoli’s homer in the seventh.

For the third straight game, the Sox scored in the first inning, grabbing a 2-0 lead. Eaton hit his homer down the rightfield line, and Cabrera scored when second baseman Brock Holt missed a relay throw.

WHAT TO WATCH

No NFL team’s training camp is officially open until the head coach and general manager greet the media, dodge as many of their questions as they can and lay out a general outline of what they hope to accomplish in the coming days and weeks.

As camp openers go, Ryan Pace’s and John Fox’s were both a B to a B-minus.

The good news Wednesday is that these guys seem pretty normal as NFL types go, a welcome relief after spending the last couple of early Augusts quizzing Dr. Strangelove and Mr. Peabody.

Please don’t misunderstand, Phil Emery and Marc Trestman are two of the nicer guys I’ve been fortunate to cover in my years on the beat, but it never really felt like we were talking football with football guys.

Pace is the rising young star, buzzing with enthusiasm and a literal gleam in his eyes in answer to almost every question.

After last season the lockerroom and team chemistry are going to be an ongoing topic for this group until it forms its own identity. Pace thinks he’ll know when they’ve got it right.

“I think you just feel it. I think a tough, physical camp, and we’ll try to create that as much as we can with the new CBA rules, but I think you can just feel that forming over time.

Fox on the other hand is the been there, done that guy, able to answer almost every question by relating to something in his past experience.

“Leadership is a key element in any group dynamic. The more you can enable players to accept those responsibilities and the accountability that comes with that, the more growth you can have in a group dynamic. “So it’s something that’s encouraged; I’ll call it a culture. But you have to enable players to do that, to really maximize that in my opinion.”

When asked if this camp would be more difficult for Fox due to taking over a 5-11 team and all the changes of the past seven months Fox wasn’t biting. “Training camp is training camp,” he said. “I’m real excited to be away at camp. My tenure, nine years in Carolina, we went away to Spartanburg.

In Denver we didn’t go away to camp, and I had my concerns about it. We did our best to create a camp atmosphere even not going somewhere.”

When asked if he was ever in a camp with the Saints where so many starting jobs were up for grabs Pace made an

interesting analogy.

“For us in New Orleans it was probably in 2006. There were a lot of unknown factors and I think we might have gotten two or three starters off the final cuts of the preseason that weren’t even with us during training camp. So it kind of tells you where that roster was.”

That team was coming off a 3-13 2005 season and went 10-6.

Does Pace expect the same of this group?

One thing that is very clear in visiting with the Bears new leadership group, they expect a bit of a honeymoon and know expectations for this team are low.

Asked about a reasonable expectation for the season Fox replied, “You know to get better every day.

“I’ve never put wins or losses on it, I have no idea, but I know if you get better every day when you look up things are usually pretty good. So it’ll be more the process and not really the results. If you can focus on the process every day, the results take care of themselves.”

After a season in the NFL wilderness Bears fans can only hope that Fox and Pace have the process down cold.

Reaching out to nearby community Manhattan church organizes relief concert for Coal City residents

dunland@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN – When Dan Hudson, pastor of Sanctuary Church in Manhattan, reached out to Peter Mayer and asked him to headline a disaster relief concert for the residents of Coal City, Mayer said he was happy to help.

Mayer, who has played with Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band and now performs with his own band – The Peter Mayer Group – has a natural heart for ministry and appreciates that Hudson’s church is outreach-based.

“Dan is a really good friend of mine,” Mayer said, “and it gives our work and playing gravity when it serves to make a lot of good happen in a community.”

Mayer, who said he was born in India where his parents were missionaries, said his group will play a variety of folk/rock/pop originals, and several covers by artists such as The Beatles, James Taylor, and Simon and Garfunkel.

“Just songs people can really enjoy,” Mayer said.

Church focused on ministry

Mayer wasn’t exaggerating when he said Sanctuary Church is focused on outreach. Sanctuary’s motto is “Follow Jesus, serve the community.” Hudson said organizing ministry projects that involve the entire family is a key characteristic of the church.

So the natural reaction when the tornado hit wasn’t, “Should we help?” but “How can we help?” Hudson said.

The first idea was to have an event at the church with local bands – until Hudson reached out to Mayer, who agreed to squeeze the relief concert into his already-packed schedule and offered a significant discount in price, Hudson said.

ed, Sanctuary sought a larger venue and sponsorships to offset the costs associated with organizing the fundraiser.

“This is not just a church event anymore. It’s taking a whole village to pull it off,” Hudson said. “There may be 1,000 people coming to see Peter Mayer. It’s a chance to pull the whole community together and raise more money than we could have done on our own.”

A community project

The village of Manhattan and the Manhattan Park District also are sponsoring the disaster relief concert now, Hudson said, especially since helping Coal City also makes sense from a community perspective, too.

Several Manhattan business owners also have locations in Coal City, and Manhattan residents like to eat at Coal City restaurants, Hudson said, so many people feel a natural connection and desire to help.

An account – Coal City Relief Fund – is set up at Homestar Bank for that purpose, Hudson added.

“We’ve been working with the mayor of Coal City to find the best way to connect with local families,” Hudson said.

Hudson said he has heard some heartrending stories from people faced with the reality of putting their homes and lives back together – low-income families who can’t pay insurance deductibles, people struggling to put food back on the shelves.

That’s what makes Peter Mayer an ideal choice to headline the entertainment.

“He grew up on the mission field,” Hudson said. “He’s just an active Christian guy who likes to help wherever he can.”

The same is true for members of Sanctuary. Some went so far as to form the nonprofit Manhattan Friendship Garden, a 3-acre vegetable plot where all the produce is donated to local food pantries.

“Every year, they give away over 20,000 pounds of food,” Hudson said.

Other features of Coal City Strong include inflatable toys, bean bag toss games, food vendors, a performance by the Sanctuary Band and three special raffles: an inflatable rental, a Blackhawks special-edition bean bag game set, and a Peter Mayer signed guitar.

An event such as this fundraiser is one reason why Jerome Gabriel of Elwood, event coordinator and new member of Sanctuary, said he joined this church with contemporary-style worship and strong biblical foundation.

Gabriel feels offering this concert accomplishes two things.

“We want to show – as a community – our support for the Coal City residents and do our part to help the rebuilding process,” Gabriel said, “and it’s a chance for the people in Manhattan, Joliet and New Lenox to spend time in [the] community.”

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Archaeologists have uncovered human remains of four of the earliest leaders of the English colony that would become America, buried for more than 400 years near the altar of what was America’s first Protestant church in Jamestown, Virginia.

The four burial sites were uncovered in the earthen floor of what was Jamestown’s historical Anglican church from 1608, a team of scientists and historians announced Tuesday. The site is the same church where Pocahontas famously married Englishman John Rolfe, leading to peace between the Powhatan Indians and colonists at the first permanent English settlement in America.

Beyond the human remains, archaeologists also found artifacts buried with the colonial leaders – including a mysterious Catholic container for holy relics found in the Protestant church.

The Jamestown Rediscovery archaeology team revealed its discovery at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. The museum is helping to study and identify those buried in the church. The burials first were uncovered in November 2013, but the scientific team wanted to trace and identify its findings with some certainty before announcing the discovery.

Archaeologists have been studying the site since 1994, when the original James Fort – long thought to be lost and submerged in the James River – was rediscovered. The church site was mostly

untouched and had not been excavated for more than a century until it was found in 2010.

The team identified the remains of the Rev. Robert Hunt, Jamestown’s first Anglican minister who was known as a peacemaker between rival leaders; Capt.

Gabriel Archer, a nemesis of one-time colony leader John Smith; Sir Ferdinando Wainman, likely the first knight buried in America; and Capt. William West, who died in a fight with the Powhatan Indians. The three other men likely died after brief illnesses. They were buried between 1608 and 1610.

“What we have discovered here in the earliest English church in America are four of the first leaders of America,” said historian James Horn, who is president of the Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation. “There’s nothing like it anywhere else in this country.”

While the individuals buried at Jamestown were not royalty, they were considered pivotal figures in the early colony. Horn compared the find to the 2012 discovery of the lost grave of King Richard III in England.

Perhaps just as interesting as the newly discovered human remains are some of the artifacts buried with the bodies. Burial items were rare in English culture at the time, archaeologists said.

In the remnants of Archer’s coffin, archaeologists found a captain’s leading staff as a symbol of Archer’s military status. Historical records indicate Archer helped lead some of the earliest expeditions to Jamestown. He died at the age of 34.

In bridge, a redouble might be for rescue (SOS), or trying to increase the score (after a not-so-brilliant enemy makes an injudicious penalty double), or announcing 10-plus points (our primary theme this week).

In today’s deal, North redoubled to show 10-plus points with fewer than four spades. After West ran to two clubs, North rebid three spades to show game-forcing values with exactly three-card spade support. Now South used Blackwood before bidding seven spades.

West led the heart king. How should South have planned the play?

Note that over North’s redouble, South did not need to do anything – one spade redoubled was game, and overtricks would have been worth 400 points each.

South starts with 12 top tricks: seven spades, one heart, one diamond and three clubs. He has to do something with his club three.

It looks easy to draw trumps and ruff that low club in the dummy. But when South sees the 3-0 spade break, he must immediately turn to clubs.

He cashes his club ace-king and ruffs the club three with dummy’s spade ace – as long as he was careful to start trumps with a winner from his hand, not the ace on the board.

Note that if declarer cashes dummy’s spade ace at trick two, he goes down because East overruffs the dummy.

cancer closely and beginning treatment when and if it advances or becomes more aggressive.

At a minimum, close monitoring means digital rectal exams (DREs) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests every four to 12 months. Biopsies should be done every one to three years.

Without regular monitoring, you run the risk that the cancer will grow and spread, making it much more difficult to treat. If PSA readings increase sharply, or if the doctor feels a new lump during a DRE, it may be time to start treatment. A change in urinary habits (needing to go urgently, or not being able to go, for example) can also signal that it’s time for active therapy.

Many of my patients have asked me the question you’ve asked. It’s hard to understand that not all cancers are bad for your health, and that some cancers are destined to never grow, spread and cause trouble.

Or that the doctor cannot tell with perfect accuracy what the risk is that a cancer will be a “bad one” that will grow and spread, unless it is treated.

We just haven’t yet been clever enough to develop a perfect test for estimating that risk. But we have learned enough to know if a person is in the “gray area,” where active surveillance is the most sensible approach.

If I were diagnosed with a prostate cancer that put me in that gray area, my choice would be active surveillance.

Dear Reader: Prostate cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the prostate. This walnut-sized gland sits below the bladder, in front of the rectum, near the base of the penis. Prostate cancer is common, but it is not always dangerous.

People are often surprised to hear “cancer” and “not dangerous” in the same sentence. But these days, many prostate cancers are discovered through screening. Some of them will not grow, spread and become serious medical problems.

Of course, some of them are serious. When deciding on a course of treatment, your doctor must first determine whether your cancer is life-threatening.

Why not just treat any prostate cancer once it is diagnosed? Because treatment comes with its own risks, including erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. And neither you nor your doctor wants you to have a treatment if it is worse than the disease.

Indeed, some men need no treatment – for example, older men with other serious and life-threatening health issues, or men with slowly progressing early-stage cancer. Other men, say younger men with aggressive cancer, require treatment.

But today, a significant number of men fall into a gray area, where the decision of whether to treat isn’t clear-cut.

Like you, these men have tumors that are so small and apparently slow-growing that they meet the criteria for active surveillance.

This strategy used to be called “watchful waiting.”

Dear Abby: A trusted and beloved family member who takes care of my cats -- and therefore has a key to my house -- has been stealing things like cleaning supplies, knickknacks, family pictures, etc. Most of them have little monetary value.

But imagine my surprise when I spotted some of my missing seashell collection in her fish tank!

Naturally, I can’t accuse her of taking things like seashells that anyone can pick up free on the beach, but I select ones with distinct markings, which is why I know they are mine. It’s frustrating to run out of toothpaste and find that the spare tube I just bought is missing. It’s not like she doesn’t have the money to buy her own.
