JOLIET – Wait times to enter addiction treatment centers could stretch on – or worse, recovery centers’ doors could close – if a state budget deal isn’t approved in the near future, state and local advocates warn.

Pete McLenighan, executive director at Stepping Stones in Joliet, said there already is a three-to-four-week waiting list for the center’s most intensive residential services.

“There are people we never see. We don’t know what happens to them. In several instances, people have died from overdoses while waiting for services,” McLenighan said.

For the 650 people served at the center each year, there’s “easily twice as many” who call seeking services but never receive them. There simply isn’t enough state and federal funds, he said.

The new fiscal year started Wednesday without a budget in place, and lawmakers aren’t scheduled to be in Springfield again until next week.

McLenighan said Stepping Stones received a state contract June 25 from the Department of Human Services for fiscal 2016, but it clearly states that the final spending plan passed by lawmakers “could result in changes to your agreement including reduction and/or elimination.”

“This is no assurance at all, really,” McLenighan said.

Centers in Will County continue to fight the heroin epidemic, he said, noting about 21 percent of the people treated at Stepping Stones are battling heroin addictions – compared to 12 percent in 2009.

Just as well, the contract McLenighan received includes a 38.5 percent reduction in state funding – or about $389,000 less than the previous year. Since fiscal 2008, state funding for Stepping Stones

has dropped from $1.2 million to about $970,000 in fiscal 2014, according to data.

“Our three-to-four-week wait time is based on existing funding. We are not reducing services at this time, but we will be absolutely forced to if this [budget impasse] continues or our funding is reduced,” McLenighan said.

The majority of addiction prevention programs statewide are funded through a federal block grant, said Sara Howe, CEO of the Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association. Those contracts have been issued by the Department of Human Services, but without a state budget, state employees can’t issue those checks.

“There’s literally dollars sitting there that they can’t give to providers,” she said.

“There’s been a small sense of relief if they have a contract in hand, but the numbers in the contract mean nothing.

It’s just a placeholder until we get a budget.”

Many nonprofits statewide say doors will be closing within 30 to 60 days without a budget in place, she said.

“There’s only so many beds and so many counselors.

That’s the thing … there’s not

a shortage of people in need of services,” Lowe said. “As we continue to go through the years of reduction, and again, with no budget, you’re eroding the capacity of the system.”

An Illinois government shutdown would end drug treatment and mental health care services for 70,000 by the end of July, according to the Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association.

Beds pledged for displaced children

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A national furniture outlet is donating beds to help make tornado-displaced Coal City kids’ nights more comfortable.

Mitch Watson, a Coal City resident and sales associate at the Ashley Furniture store in Bolingbrook, said he contacted the company’s corporate office to ask if it could help after the June 22 tornado made the homes of potentially up to 200 families uninhabitable.

Ashley Furniture answered by dedicating at least 100 twinsize beds, risers and bedding sets to children in need.

“With the devastation that happened, I thought it was the right thing to do,” said Watson, whose house also was damaged by the tornado. “So many families were affected.

The beds are being donated through Ashley Furniture’s “Hope to Dream” program, which donates mattresses to kids in need four times per year. Watson is seeking eligible children and their parents for the program.

Watson said since Wednesday morning, the names of

about 30 children have been submitted to the program. He contacted the United Methodist Church in Coal City and Village Hall.

He also said he contacted Coal City Unit District 1 Superintendent Kent Bugg, a Coal City resident who lost his house to the tornado. Bugg posted information on the program, and Watson said he plans to cross-reference a list of displaced students who will need transportation when school starts.

Michelle Paszak, chair of the Ashley Furniture program, said eligible children can receive a bed by notifying any Ashley Furniture store of how many beds they need, the name and phone number of a parent or guardian, and the address where the bed should be delivered.

“We’ll be making deliveries in July,” Paszak said.

June set records in Illinois for rainfall

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com PEOTONE – June’s record heavy rains were so relentless in Will County that a gaggle of geese have found a temporary new home in the middle of Peotone farmer Glenn Ginder’s 500-acre farm – in a knee-deep pond situated where his beans should be growing.

“Everything is real soggy,” the 67-year-old farmer said Tuesday afternoon – just days after learning that this past month was officially the wettest June in Illinois, with records dating back to 1895.

At its greatest, the makeshift pond covered a 10-acre surface area, he said. A recent break in the rain clouds allowed some water to recede, Ginder said while at the wheel of his Gator utility vehicle, pointing to an outer muddy ring around the pond that revealed rows of browning, stunted soybean plants.

In all, Ginder estimates 25 acres of farmland have been lost to the torrential rainfall, setting him back about $5,000 – and that doesn’t take into account the money he’ll spend later in the year to reverse the damage to his fields.

The extent of the damage won’t be known until later in the year during the fall harvest, with area farmers hoping for better weather conditions heading into July.

In sporadic lower-lying areas, Ginder’s corn is stunted and yellowing – unlike the rich green the plant should be. It’s a familiar scene many farmers throughout Will and Grundy counties are experiencing.

Ginder, like many farmers in Will and Grundy counties, has seen the rain and intense weather take a toll on his soybean and corn crops this season. ager with the Will County Farm Bureau, said about 5 percent of Will County’s planted farmland has been damaged or flooded by the past month’s heavy rains.

“Overall, it doesn’t seem too bad,” he said. “But some have been hit harder than others. If you planted 600 acres, and have 60 acres underwater, that can take its toll.”

It’s estimated between 10 to 15 percent of Grundy County’s farmland remains underwater, said Tasha Bunting, manager for the Grundy County Farm Bureau.

If the rains continue, this harvest season will be a tough one for farmers, she said.

“If we get a break, we may see some areas bounce back.

But the areas along the river are completely drowned out,” Bunting said.

Some farmers have been in touch with crop insurance agents about their inability to get insured crops into the ground for the first time due to the unusually heavy rains, Bunting said. In some instances, crop insurance will help farmers recoup from those losses.

The Coal City tornado resulted in a double whammy to farmers in the twister’s path of destruction, Bunting said.

“The bulk of the damage was near Coal City,” she said.

“Machine sheds were knocked down. Equipment and grain bins sitting along the corridor were damaged. Some sheds were completely wiped out.”

‘The corn can’t survive’

It could take at least another week for Manhattan farmer Dave Kestel’s fields to dry out

long enough for him to replant crops.

“I still got water standing in wet holes. Even if it turns sunny and 85, I’m probably a week and a half or more from being able to replant,” Kestel said, who estimates he’s lost about 50 acres to flooding.

Even the corn that does survive the flooding could face a nitrogen deficiency due to the soil being waterlogged for so long, said Kestel, a fourth-generation farmer.

“Nitrogen to corn is like protein to people. The corn can’t survive without nitrogen,” Kestel said. “Our hands are tied. The corn is really beat up already. I’m kind of hoping to rescue it by reapplying nitrogen, but there’s no telling what will happen.”

The longer farmers wait to replant, the less likely it is the

corn will have enough time to mature before harvest season.

Kestel said he won’t know for several more weeks whether his soybean or corn plants were hit with disease – a common occurrence when crops go too long underwater.

He expects to use crop insurance this year to help recover from the losses.

Ginder, on the other hand, doesn’t have crop insurance – which is unusual for a farmer in today’s day and age, he said.

He said he would rather “rely on the man upstairs” to decide how he fares each year.

“We’re complaining now,” Ginder said, “but the flip side is that it could be 90 degrees with our tongues hanging out, and all our plants would be dying from a drought. ... Everybody’s got to take a turn in the barrel at some point.”

Ashley Furniture opens unique facility Site combines 3 operations in 1 building

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – More than 100 people turned out Thursday morning for the ribbon-cutting at a new, one-of-akind Ashley Furniture store in Romeoville.

Ashley Furniture moved into one of its largest facilities at 2045 Crossroads Parkway in January and has operated retail for the past month.

The location is unique because it is the company’s first facility that combines retail, distribution and administrative offices in the same building.

“We felt that this location in Romeoville is perfect,” said Patrick Brown, division vice president for Ashley Furniture, adding that the site has easy access to Interstate 55 and about 120,000 cars pass by each day.

ting were Brown, Romeoville Mayor John Noak, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, members of the Tri County Special Recreation Association, staff from Ashley Furniture and the village, and other supporters.

The 454,525-square-foot warehouse has a two-floor, 60,000-square-foot retail space, 14,000 square feet of adminis-

trative space and more than 380,000 square feet of space for distribution. It also includes 254 parking spaces.

The facility serves 18 stores in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, and is the regional headquarters for the Chicago area. It created more than 150 jobs in Romeoville.

Noak said the facility is the first full-fledged furniture

outlet store in the village, noting that shoppers will have the chance to purchase and receive furniture on-site or through delivery.

“Ashley Furniture is bringing a large number of retail, distribution and office jobs,” Noak said. “This is a value-add to the village with such a high-quality name.”

Noak said the amount of

sales tax revenue the Ashley Furniture development would generate for the village wasn’t known because the combined operations concept was new for the company. But he welcomed any sales revenue because the site wasn’t originally intended to generate any sales tax revenue.

Tri County SRA

Brown presented members of the Tri County SRA with a check for $1,000 at the ribbon-cutting on behalf of Ashley Furniture.

“We want to be a part of the Romeoville community,” Brown said.

The Tri County SRA provides year-round events and activities for adults and children with special needs in the areas in and around Romeoville and Lockport Township.

Tri County SRA acting Director Cathy Davis said in addition to the donation, Ashley Furniture is becoming a member agency.

“It came at the perfect time for us after one of our members ceased to be a member,” Davis said, noting the recent departure of the Lemont Park District.

Joliet seeks $622K from local sanitary district Amount of unpaid money in dispute

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet and a local sanitary district are having a run-in over a disputed bill for more than $620,000.

Joliet has claimed it is owed $622,390 for sanitary sewer services not paid since 2004 from the South Ridgewood Sanitary District.

The district contends that

the Joliet bill is based on faulty city meters that register as much as three times the actual sewage being handled.

“We don’t owe that,” Frank Burkey, attorney for the South Ridgewood Sanitary District, said of the $622,390 figure listed in a final notice from the city threatening legal action. “They were in court and couldn’t prove it.”

Burkey said the sanitary district was previously sued by the city and the case was dismissed in 2011 because the city could not adequately show how much sewage

it was getting from South Ridgewood.

South Ridgewood has $155,000 available from bills collected but not paid to Joliet until there is some resolution of the issue, Burkey said.

Ridgewood is an unincorporated area that lies just outside the city borders on the East Side. The sanitary district provides sewer lines in the neighborhood, and the sewage is treated at a city plant.

The city on May 25 sent a final notice to the South Ridgewood Sanitary District

saying it has not been paid since Nov. 4, 2004, and stating the owed amount at $622,390.

In the notice, the city threatens legal action to end its services to South Ridgewood or take over certain aspects of the district’s sewer system, including customer billing.

City Manager Jim Hock said the city is seeking payments from South Ridgewood but declined to comment in detail, noting the possibility of litigation.

“That’s all subject to negotiation,” Hock said.

Hock did provide a memo

from City Attorney Martin Shanahan on the matter. In the memo, Shanahan said attempts to contact the South Ridgewood Sanitary District and collect the overdue amounts have been unsuccessful. He said the city has stepped up its effort to collect unpaid bills.

Shanahan said a letter also was sent to customers of the sanitary district “to make them aware of the situation.”

While noting the possibility of litigation, Shanahan’s memo says, “City staff is also working toward a resolution to this challenging situation.”

WWII veteran takes trip to remember Joliet man joins Honor Flight to Washington

Hossbach was among 88 World War II veterans flown Tuesday to Washington, D.C.,

by Honor Flight Chicago. The organization flies veterans to the nation’s capital for a day of honor and remembrance.

The Joliet native said there were many special moments in the trip, especially a service held for the veterans at the World War II Memorial.

“I’ll never forget it. It was a big impression,” Hossbach said. “To see all those men still living. There were three rows of us all lined up in wheelchairs. They put us in the middle of that memorial.

“It was a beautiful sight.”

Hossbach never left the United States during the war.

He was an Army cook at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin and later at military facilities in Savanna, Illinois, serving from 1942 to 1946. He learned his cooking skills from his mother as a child. The two of them would cook for boarders his mother took in at their Joliet home – men who worked at the Joliet Arsenal in Elwood.

At Fort McCoy, he and another cook made meals for 400 soldiers at basic training mess halls.

Today, he is among a vanishing group of Americans – World War II veterans.

Hossbach said it’s been a long time since he saw as many World War II veterans gathered together as were on that Honor Flight.

Honor Flight Chicago on its website says there are an estimated 25,000 World War II veterans still in the Chicago area. The organization en-

courages them to sign up for the flight.

Hossbach recommends that they do.

“I’d tell them, you have

to go,” he said. “You have no idea what to expect, and I’m not going to tell you because it’s such a surprise.”

er thought of going on an Honor Flight and did not know much about it. He thanked his friends, Kathy and Ray Jordan of Joliet, who encouraged him to take the flight.

The trip included visits to war memorials, the Smithsonian Institution and many other sites in Washington.

Hossbach said he made one other trip to Washington with his late wife 35 years ago but did not see nearly as much as he did Tuesday.

For all the good memories he had from Washington, nothing was better than what awaited the veterans when at Midway Airport when the plane arrived back in Chicago.

“The biggest thing I will never forget is the reception we got at the airport when we got home,” he said. “There must have been 500 people at Midway.”

Sailors from Great Lakes Naval Base helped the veterans from the airplane. Soldiers lined up along the way to greet them. Bagpipes played.

So did another band.

“They had signs and banners of all kinds, and people shouting hooray and saying thank you for your service,” he said. “I’ve never shaken so many hands.”

He says city officials didn’t help him

Benson said the city officials had before and after pictures proving the cracks in his driveway were not from their construction project. He said he thought some of his communications with Erickson were meant to alleviate the situation, and he was perplexed by his complaints.

“I’m not sure there is a direct request for council this evening,” Benson said.

Erickson said he was at the City Council meeting to ask the staff to do their jobs. He said he also wanted to know if residents had other issues because he was seeing a trend of what he described as not caring for residents.

“You said you’re supposed to be manning up these things between independent council,

as well as hiring extra parttime staff … at that point you should have someone on-site at all times,” he said.

Weir, who was at Wednesday’s council meeting, apologized to Erickson. He said he never received an email, phone call or office phone message regarding his concerns.

Mayor Steven Streit told Erickson he understood the problem and either he or Benson will try to fix it, according to the video. He said these types of projects tend to be disruptive for residents and if he sends them an email, he’ll raise those concerns to city staff or the contractor.

He also told Erickson he cannot expect Weir to be available all day during construction.

Whirlpool bringing distribution center to Joliet

JLL, a Chicago-based real estate brokerage company, has announced that 752,410 square feet of space has been leased in Clarius Park, a new industrial park on Youngs Road.

JLL identified the tenant as “a leading consumer appliance manufacturer” without naming Whirlpool. But sourc-

es confirmed that Whirlpool is the company moving into the space. Whirlpool did not return a call for comment Thursday.

Whirlpool will be the first company to move into Clarius Park, which is designed for four buildings and 2.8 million square feet of space. The Benton Harbor, Michigan-based company will go into a building that was constructed in 2012.

Kevin Matzke, managing principal with Clarius Partners, said the arrival of the first company into the indus-

trial park reflects a rebound in the market.

“The industrial market along Interstate 80 is as good as it has been since 2007,” Matzke said.

He said the company will be moving into the building in phases during the summer.

The building at 3851 Youngs Road is a little more than 1 million square feet. Clarius has plans to build another 1 million-square-foot building next door, but Matzke said a construction timetable has not been set.

LOCKPORT – A Lockport resident came to the City Council meeting Wednesday to complain about disruptive construction on his street, as well as poor communication he says he received from city staff – an allegation city staff disputed.

John Erickson, who lives on the 800 block of Summit Drive, was upset at construction work on his street that he said left his driveway cracked and the air thick with dust, according to a video of the meeting published online Thursday.

He also was dissatisfied with what he called negligent responses from City Engineering Tech Bob Weir when he raised concerns, leaving him to deal with the contractors.

“I would like to know why residents are dealing with a contractor and not with city staff,” Erickson said, according to the video. “If the job of an engineering department is to oversee and manage these projects, shouldn’t that also include communicating with the residents and mediating between the residents and the contractor?”

City Engineering Director Amy Wagner said her staff sends out notices to residents

by mail and to their door inviting them to open houses to examine construction projects in their area before they begin.

For the Summit Drive project, only five people showed up, she said.

She said when Erickson contacted her with concerns, in less than an hour she had contacted the contractor.

“To say we are not responsive and we are not taking care of the residents out there is ridiculous,” she said.

Erickson also expressed frustration with City Administrator Ben Benson. He said he followed Weir’s instructions to file an insurance claim about his cracked driveway and said Benson “accused me of filing a false claim,” according to the video.

BOLINGBROOK – A Bolingbrook man who police accused of selling drugs from his house was arrested Wednesday.

Erik F. Guadarrama, 25, was arrested by the Will County Cooperative Police Assistance Team on charges of delivery of drugs, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

CPAT Director Wayne Ladd said within the last month police received information about Guadarrama and began an investigation.

“We learned he was selling cocaine out of his house and around the Bolingbrook area,” Ladd said. After making some undercover buys, CPAT officers received a search warrant for Guadarrama’s home in the 400

block of Independence Lane.

Ladd said police seized 13 grams of cocaine, nine grams of marijuana and approximately $1,200. Guadarrama was booked into the Will County jail.

Canadian man pleads guilty to drug charges

JOLIET – A Canadian man who was pulled over last year for talking on the phone as he drove with cocaine in his car pleaded guilty Thursday.

Sylain Bergeron, 44, was sentenced to six years in prison on a Sylain count of delivBergeron ery of drugs, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Bergeron, of Quebec, had faced

up to 30 years behind bars.

The state law prohibiting cellphone use while driving had just come into effect when Bergeron was stopped Jan. 10, 2014, on Interstate 355 near Homer Glen.

The state’s attorney’s office said a police canine was brought to the scene and detected drugs in a red duffle bag in the backseat. Police estimated the street value of the cocaine at $1.2 million.

Bergeron’s local arrest garnered the attention of Canadian media because he was employed as a security official at a prestigious boarding school.

Bergeron was director of security at Stanstead College, a co-ed boarding school for grades 7 to 12 near the Quebec-Vermont border.

Man charged with Going on illegal reptile sales

JOLIET – A Monee man was arrested Wednesday on charges he sold endangered reptiles last year.

Keith A. Cantore, 35, of the 500 block of Margaret Street, was indicted last month on charges of offering an Illinois-listed endangered species for sale and possession of aquatic life without a valid endangered or threatened species permit. Cantore could be sentenced to up to eight years in prison if convicted on both counts.

According to an indictment sought by the Illinois Attorney General’s office, Cantore offered animals for sale between April and September 2014 from a commercial building in the 25000 block of South Ridgeland Avenue in Monee.

Cantore allegedly offered two alligator snapping turtles for sale. Alligator snapping

turtles, with their powerful jaws and long necks, are on the Illinois List of Endangered Species.

Cantore also had 54 common snapping turtles, one Blandings turtle, a spotted turtle and six American alligators for sale, according to the indictment.

Cantore was taken into custody Wednesday by Will County sheriff’s police and released from the county jail after posting a $75,000 bond.

In 2005, Cantore was arrested for selling more than 300 undersized turtles at a reptile show in East Peoria.

Federal law prohibits selling turtles less than 4 inches long because they tend to carry disease.

According to the Peoria Journal-Star, Cantore was sentenced three years later to a year in federal prison. His sentence ran concurrently with a 40-month sentence for a weapons conviction.

Born June 30, 1938, in Watsville, Alabama, he was the son of the late Frank and Irene (Sanders) Buck.

ANN M. VALEK Ann M (Hertko) Valek, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, while in Hospice Care at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet.

Born and raised in Joliet, Ann attended S.S. Cyril & Methodius Catholic School and Joliet Township High School, from where she graduated in 1936.

She was married in 1940 to

Peter “Patsy” Valek with whom she raised four sons. They took great pride in their sons, their sons’ wives and their extended families and happily and regularly welcomed them and their friends into their home, during Peter’s life and after his passing in 1982.

Ann was a steadfast parishioner of the S.S. Cyril & Methodius Parish, participating in various clubs and activities there.

She was very devoted to her family, friends and faith. Very socially oriented, she enjoyed the company of people in person or on the telephone. She touched many people through her outgoing and caring personality. Ann had an amazing memory for people and events.

She never forgot a friend or a birthday. Well into her 90’s, she could relay stories and remember generations of family members.

She was very generous and giving, whether providing a meal, advice or companionship.

Even at her advanced age, she stayed energetic and independent nearly to the end of her life.

Ann is preceded in death by her husband, Peter; her parents, Julius and Magdalena Hertko; five brothers, Julius, Martin, Joseph, John and Aloysius Hert-

ko; and two sisters, Elizabeth (LiFonti) and MaryAnn. She is survived by four sons and their spouses, Peter (Judy), Bernard (Elba), Paul (Elizabeth) and Raymond (Jeanette); eight grandchildren, Peter, Matthew, Eve (Garcia), Emily, Megan (Kitterman), Anicka, Genevieve and Rebecca; and one step-grandchild. Numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

BRIEF Husband of former New Jersey governor dies

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – John Whitman, the husband of former Republican Gov. Christine Todd Whitman and the state’s first-ever first gentleman, died Thursday at Morristown Medical Center after suffering a catastrophic brain injury in mid-June, said Heather Grizzle, a spokeswoman for Todd Whitman. He was 71.

John Whitman was an investment banker who served as a managing partner at Princeton-based Sycamore Ventures.

He served as New Jersey’s first gentleman from 1994 to 2001.

“He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and we are heartbroken to lose his presence in our lives,” Todd Whitman said in a statement.

John Whitman was an Army veteran and graduate of Yale University and Harvard Business School.

A rescue hidden for 50 years

By NAOMI KOPPEL The Associated Press LONDON – “Is there anyone in our audience tonight who owes their life to Nicholas Winton?” asked the presenter of the popular BBC magazine program “That’s Life.”

Around the elderly man, sitting with his wife in the front row of the audience, more than 30 people got to their feet. The man stood to acknowledge them, wiping tears from his eyes.

It was 1988, some 50 years since young stockbroker Nicholas Winton found himself in Prague as the Nazis marched on Czechoslovakia and all around him Jewish parents desperately looked for a means of escape, if not for themselves then at least for their children.

Virtually single-handedly, Winton saved more than 650 of those children from almost certain death in the Holocaust. But he didn’t talk about it for decades, until his wife discovered documents in their attic that revealed the story and for the first time allowed the rescued children to know and thank their savior.

“There are all kinds of things you don’t talk about, even with your family,” Winton said later. “Everything that happened before the war actually didn’t feel important in the light of the war itself.”

Winton’s death Wednesday at the age of 106 brought tributes from leaders and Jewish groups in Britain, the Czech Republic and Israel.

“In a world plagued by evil and indifference, Winton dedicated himself to saving the innocent and the defenseless.

His exceptional moral leadership serves as an example to all humanity,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday.

“Winton knew how to correctly read the harsh reality and chose to leave his comfortable life and follow the voice of his conscience,” added Avner Shalev, chairman of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem.

Sir Nicholas Winton in October 2014. how to get the Czechoslovakian children out, Winton borrowed the headed paper of the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia and underneath typed the words “Children’s Section.”

He approached the British government, and eventually got a promise that it would let the children in, provided he had a foster home arranged for each of them, and upon payment of a guarantee – the substantial sum of 50 pounds per child.

He drew up lists of some 6,000 suitable children, publishing their photographs to try to encourage British families to agree to take them. He arranged trains from Prague

to the Netherlands, ferries to take the children across the North Sea. Eight trains and one plane carried 669 children to Britain in the months before the outbreak of war. The largest evacuation was scheduled for Sept. 3, 1939, the day Britain declared war on Germany.

That train never left, and almost none of the 250 children trying to flee that day survived the war.

“At the time, everybody said, ‘Isn’t it wonderful what you’ve done for the Jews?

You saved all these Jewish people,’” Winton said. “When it was first said to me, it came almost as a revelation because I didn’t do it particularly for that reason. I was there to save children.”

The children from Prague were among some 10,000 mostly Jewish children who made it to Britain on what were known as the Kindertransports (children’s transports). Few of them would see their parents again.

Though many more children were saved from Berlin and Vienna, those operations were better-organized and better-financed. Winton’s operation was unique because he worked almost alone.

He acknowledged that not all the children who made it to Britain were well-treated in their foster homes, and some foster parents used them as cheap domestic servants. He also faced criticism in some quarters for placing Jewish children with Christian families.

“I wouldn’t claim that it was 100 percent successful, but I would claim that everybody who came over was alive at the end of the war,” he said, quoted in the book “Into the Arms of Strangers.”

After the story came to light, Winton’s wife, Grete, persuaded him to talk about what had happened, and many of the children – now parents and grandparents themselves – contacted him to thank him for saving their lives. Among the well-known people saved by Winton were American scientist Ben Abeles, British film director Karel Reisz and Canadian journalist Joe Schlesinger.

Illinois River hits record flood stage at Beardstown

BEARDSTOWN – Flooding continues in parts of Illinois after the state saw its rainiest June on record. The National Weather Service on Thursday reported major flooding on the Illinois River at Beardstown, Hardin, Havana, LaGrange Lock and Dam, Meredosia and Valley City. Major flooding also was recorded on the Kaskaskia River in New Athens.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reported the Illinois River hit a record 30 feet on Wednesday. Officials said rising waters caused two new sinkholes to open along the Cass County town’s Main Street since the river hit major flooding stages. Beardstown started sandbagging just like other towns along the river.

There also is moderate flooding along the Illinois River near Peoria, Henry and LaSalle. The weather service also reports minor flooding on the Mississippi River south of Quincy.

Fairdale rezoned to make tornado recovery easier

FAIRDALE – The tornado-struck small northern Illinois town of Fairdale has been rezoned to help with rebuilding efforts. The DeKalb County Board and Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the rezoning.

The DeKalb Daily Chronicle reported that starting Thursday, Fairdale residents could pick up building permits and rebuild under the new specifications.

The April 9 tornado caused $7.9 million in damage to dozens of properties in the unincorporated community of about 150 people. Only 25

Indiana law spurs ‘fireworks tourism’ from Illinoisans

HAMMOND, Ind. – Indiana’s more lenient fireworks regulations can mean a Fourth of July boon in business for Lake County, which borders Illinois, according to experts.

Most consumer fireworks are banned in Illinois. But over the border, 100 businesses are licensed to sell fireworks in northwest Indiana and they’re mostly concentrated near the border in Lake County, the

Indiana Department of Homeland Security said. Fireworks store owners in northwest Indiana estimate that half to 80 percent of their business comes from Illinois, The Munster Times reported.

Other businesses also benefit since Illinois residents who travel to Indiana for fireworks may also stop to grab food or purchase other items under the state’s lower sales tax.

Consumer fireworks revenue has been booming nationwide, increasing from $284 million in 1998 to $695 million in 2014, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association.

State reportedly has landfill space for 21 more years

SPRINGFIELD – State officials say existing Illinois landfills have capacity to take trash for another 21 years.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency released

its landfill report for 2014 on Wednesday. The report found that the state had 39 active landfills that took in more than 44 million gate cubic yards of waste during 2014. A gate cubic yard is the volume of waste entering the landfill’s gate.

The landfills reported that there were 942 million gate cubic yards of combined remaining capacity as of Jan. 1.

The state EPA said that means landfill life expectancy in Illinois is 21 years based on 2014 disposal rates.

Illinois EPA director Lisa Bonnett said the agency reports landfill capacity every year “to aid local governments and private businesses in planning the safe management of waste.”

Teachers protest planned cuts after pension payment

City Hall to protest $200 million in planned Chicago Public Schools cuts.

The nation’s third-largest school district plans 1,400 layoffs, scaled-back maintenance and reduced transportation.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel put the blame on state legislators for worsening the situation and said a property tax increase was up for consideration.

In response, the Chicago SunTimes reported that protesters marched Thursday wearing red shirts and chanting “Rahm’s school board’s got to go. Lay off teachers? We say no.”

Earlier this week the district paid a $634 million pension bill that officials said it couldn’t afford. Chicago has the worst-funded public pension systems of any major U.S. city.

The cuts triggered fresh concerns for teachers and students still reeling from school closures.

Without a budget, providers prepare, officials go to court

Gov. Bruce Rauner has been steadfast in demanding changes to what he calls the state’s broken business and political climates before he’ll talk to legislative Democrats about what they say is a $4 billion shortfall to pay for vital services.

Democrats sent Rauner a $36 billion spending plan in June, but he vetoed most of it last week, calling it unconstitutionally out of balance. Lawmakers attempted to approve a one-month, $2.3 billion budget this week, but the effort failed in the House.

Wednesday was the start of the new fiscal year.

BELLEVILLE – Unions representing Illinois state employees have filed a lawsuit demanding they will be paid in full and on time despite the lack of a fiscal 2016 budget.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 and the Service Employees International Union, among others, filed the lawsuit Thursday in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

They argue the state’s failure to pay employees their full wages under their collective bargaining agreements would violate their contracts.

“The governor and the Legislature are using us as political pawns,” Pesqueira said.

Chicago-based Family Focus laid off 14 employees this week, including eight working on a program that helped families get needed services to stay intact after Department of Children and Family Services intervention, according to Director Mariana Osoria.

But, ironically, many agencies won’t feel an immediate pinch because of overdue state payments. The state has a $5 billion backlog, so vendors will get checks in July for work done last spring.

Lutheran Social Services in Des Plaines, a wide-ranging provider for foster parents and the developmentally disabled, can function through July because of the backlog and required program funding, spokeswoman Barb Kraeger Hailey said.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan asked a judge Thursday to declare what bills the state can pay without appropriation authority. Not all money is appropriated and there are cases where federal

Although Rauner appointee Munger asked Madigan to push for full pay, the attorney general is not seeking that in court. Based on an appellate court decree in 1991, Madigan says if there’s no budget, no one gets paid.

“The administration disagrees with the attorney general’s efforts to block employees from getting their full pay,” Rauner deputy chief of staff Mike Schrimpf said.

“State employees deserve their full paychecks.”

Rauner points to a 2007 lawsuit in which a circuit court ruled that workers in jobs covered by federal labor law should continue to get at least the federal minimum wage. But the court in that case allowed full payroll disbursement under very limited circumstances. The governor believes a similar situation exists today and, if a court and statewide officials agree, full paychecks could be signed.

Madigan scoffed at the governor’s criticism that she is blocking employee pay.

“The only way to ensure state employees and service providers are fully and legally paid,” Madigan said, “is with an enacted budget.”

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ government weathered its second day without a state budget Thursday, and while legislative chambers were silent, service providers buckled up for a bumpy summer ride and state officials asked what bills could be paid if the impasse continues.

The Democratic state attorney general asked Cook County Circuit Court for guidance on what the state could pay without a budget providing for it, heating up a simmering debate with the Republican governor over whether state employees can be paid.

Meanwhile, some service providers began notifying staff members of layoffs, while others hoped to hobble through the month.

$18.7B deal clears path for BP to close books on oil spill The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW ORLEANS – Trying to close the books on the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history, BP agreed Thursday to provide billions of dollars in new money to five Gulf Coast states in a deal the company said would bring its full obligations to an estimated $53.8 billion.

Federal and state government officials touted the record-breaking $18.7 billion agreement as a historic milestone in the Gulf Coast’s recovery.

The Deepwater Horizon disaster killed 11 rig workers and spewed millions of gallons of crude that stained beaches, coated wildlife and polluted marshes.

BP also gets a valuable return: Much of the payments, to

be made over the next 18 years, could be tax-deductible. And by finally providing shareholders with a clearer cost picture, the London-based oil giant will be freer to embark on new ventures.

“This allows us to manage BP as an oil company,” BP CEO Bob Dudley said during a conference call. He said BP could launch as many as 20 major new projects by 2020, depending on oil prices.

The Justice Department said Thursday’s agreement would be the largest environmental settlement in U.S. history as well as the largest-ever civil settlement with a single entity. Civil claims by the five Gulf states and the federal government were, by far, the largest unresolved piece of BP’s financial obligations for the spill.

“It’s time for the company to move on,” said Brian Youngberg, an energy analyst for Edward Jones. “It’s definitely a win for BP. No company can really do well when you have such a big litigation issue hanging over it.”

In 2012, BP reached a similar settlement agreement with private attorneys for businesses and residents who claim the spill cost them money. That deal, which didn’t have a cap, led to a protracted court battle over subsequent payouts to businesses.

A court-supervised claims administrator is still processing many of these claims.

The CIA launched a drone strike last month on a Yemeni beach at three men it determined were al-Qaida militants. One of them turned out to be Nasser al-Wahishi, about as important a figure as agency man-hunters could hope to eliminate. He had been both al-Qaida’s second in command and the leader of the group’s dangerous Yemeni affiliate.

American officials touted the death as a big victory. But did the demise of another senior extremist, the latest in a long line to be taken off the battlefield, make the United States and its allies any safer?

To many experts, including a growing number of former Obama administration national security advisers, that proposition is less convincing by the day.

With al-Qaida and the Islamic State group enjoying safe havens across parts of Yemen, Syria and Iraq, and with terror attacks on the rise worldwide, doubts are growing about the effectiveness and sustainability of the administration’s “light footprint” strategy against global extremist movements. A template predicated on training local forces and bombing terrorists from the air is actually making the situation worse, some say. Many are arguing for deeper U.S. involvement, if not with regular ground troops, then at least with elite advisers and commandos taking more risks in more places.

“What they are doing now is making it more likely that there will be a bigger, more disastrous catastrophe for the United States,” said David Sedney, who resigned in 2013 as deputy assistant secretary

Even Michele Flournoy, the former undersecretary of defense for policy who was the president’s first choice to replace Chuck Hagel as defense secretary, wrote last month that the U.S. effort against the Islamic State is “faltering,” and urged a more robust approach.

“U.S. counterterrorism policy has caused some intense backlash and has had a lot of unintended consequences,” said Rosa Brooks, a former Obama administration Pentagon official.

Current officials dispute the criticism, but they declined to make anyone available to speak on the record.

The administration’s position is that the failure of al-Qaida or the Islamic State to launch a coordinated attack on the U.S. homeland is the best evidence that the strategy is working.

Timothy Hoyt, a professor of counterterrorism studies at the Naval War College, agreed. Terrorist attacks against the U.S. and its allies have been far less lethal than past campaigns in Britain by the Irish Republican Army, he said, “which suggests that some elements of our counterterrorism strategy are working.”

America needs culture change America will soon celebrate the Fourth of July, when we remember the birth of our nation.

It’s a day that always touches me deeply and fills my heart with gratitude for being born in the USA. I was born in Chicago in 1933, the middle child of seven brothers. I could not have been prouder of my country’s role in saving the world from the forces of evil during World War II. Family members served proudly in the armed forces; they were my heroes. A cousin gave his life in France shortly after the D-Day invasion; another cousin earned a Purple Heart fighting in the Philippines.

During the Cold War, two cousins and two brothers served in Korea. Both cousins gave their lives, and one brother received a Purple Heart. I was fortunate to be called for my military service during a time of peace (1955-1957). I served those years in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, assigned to the 692nd Field Artillery Battalion. My youngest brother also trained there before serving as an Army officer during the Vietnam War. He served with distinction and made me even prouder to be an American. My wife and I were just beginning our family when several disturbing changes started. Prayer in public schools was prohibited by the Supreme Court during the early 1960s.

The founders of our nation were turning over in their graves. I found it hard to believe Americans could accept this ruling without protests. The ’60s also saw the start of the sexual revolution when moral values were tossed aside, and what was bad became good and what was good was no longer acceptable.

The 1970s saw an even greater evil from the Supreme Court, as abortion became law.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

The murder of more than 50 million babies has taken place since. Besides abortion, we have seen the decline of the family, and marriage, once the core of family life, is no longer seen for many as a necessity. In 1996 Congress passed and President Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as the legal union of a man and woman. Today’s Justice Department characterizes that law as an act of bigotry and accuses those who support it as being motivated by bias and prejudice. I know that to be untrue.

Now, the Supreme Court has ruled gay marriage is legal. Given the court’s history of decisions that go against traditional Christian values, I’m not surprised. Once again law is forced on us by a panel of judges instead of a vote of the people.

I have always been proud to affirm my belief that America would lead the world into an age of acceptance of Gospel values.

As a believer in the divinity of Jesus Christ I try to imagine his stance if he were with us today. I can’t imagine he would support abortion or endorse gay marriage. He would say, “Love the sinner, hate the sin.”

If there ever was a nation that needed culture change, it’s America. That change can happen only through prayer and the wise exercise of power within our vote. Our Founding Fathers declared their independence from Great Britain, but at the same time declared their dependence on the Providence of God. My prayer is that we will do the same.

Stay safe this Fourth of July The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our great country’s independence.

In Will and Grundy counties, across Illinois and the entire U.S., Americans will commemorate the anniversary of our independence with picnics, barbecues, ball games, swimming and, of course, fireworks.

Attending a community-sponsored display is the best – and the safest – way to enjoy fireworks. They are put on by professionals, and area fire departments are on standby in case there are any issues.

Of course, many residents will put on their own smaller fireworks displays, likely in your neighborhood.

Keep in mind that in Illinois, most fireworks – except for sparklers, snakes and other novelty items – are illegal.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of illegal commercial fireworks being

set off around our counties, things such as firecrackers, bottle rockets and other mini-explosives, or that local residents won’t be traveling to states where fireworks are legal.

Have a good time this Fourth of July, but be safe.

Here are some tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for individuals who plan to use fireworks this holiday season: • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

• Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign the fireworks were made for professional displays and could pose a danger to consumers.

• Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees – hot

enough to melt some metals.

• Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.

• Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

• Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.

• Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

• After fireworks finish burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

• Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

Slammers swept by Traverse City

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers knew that they’d be in for a tough series considering that Traverse City owned the Frontier League’s top record heading into Tuesday’s opener.

And despite receiving a pair of good pitching performances in the final two games of the mid-week series, the Slammers wound up getting swept by the Beach Bums.

Traverse City scored an unearned run in the first inning after a wild pitch and led throughout before hanging on for a 6-5 victory Thursday before 4,049 fans at Silver Cross Field.

Joliet’s hopes were boosted by having Kevin Walter on the mound. The righthander only entered with a 1-2 record, but had allowed one earned or less in his last three of his last four starts.

But Beach Bums starter Kramer Champlin continued to perform well. He improved upon his 1.98 ERA and moved to 5-2 after limiting the Slammers to five hits and one earned run in seven innings.

The Slammers entered the game only hitting .213 against Beach Bum pitching, which was well below its .255 season average. Traverse City has now won all six games between the two squads this season.

Traverse City (28-12) scored in the first when Jay Austin (2 for 4) singled, stole second, took third on an error and came home on a wild pitch.

Joliet (18-24) threatened in the fifth when Phil Bates (2 for 2) led off with an infield single before Alfredo Rodriguez hit a deep fly to left. After Adam Giacalone (2 for 3) singled to right, John Cannon hit a long fly to right, which moved the runner to third. But Champlin got out of the mess with a force.

But the Beach Bums ended the drama in the eighth when Reggie Lawson (2 for 4) smacked a two-out, three-run home run to right.

Joliet made the game interesting by staging a two-out rally in the ninth. Rodriguez belted a solo home run to right and then Giacalone walked and Cannon followed with a single.

NEW LENOX – Ever since his high school days in Munster, Indiana, Jason Helbling has set his sights on becoming an athletic director.

After serving as assistant athletic director for the past three years at Lincoln-Way Central under Hud Venerable, he’s getting the opportunity to pursue his dream job.

With Venerable retiring at the end of the school year, the former baseball player at Purdue University was the obvious successor and indeed got the job earlier this year.

As the preparation for the 2015-16 season continues, the 33-year old Helbling is starting to settle into his new role and is excited about leading Knights athletics for a long time.

“I’ve wanted to be an athletic director since I was in high school, so I guess it’s always something that I’ve wanted to do,” Helbling said. “I’ve enjoyed sports, that’s why I was a P.E. teacher and I enjoy working out and think it’s important to have lifetime fitness.

“I am beyond thrilled to be here right now and I want to be here for as long as they’ll let me. I have a lot of energy and feel that I’m a very positive person. I’m this school’s number one fan so I’ll enjoy every minute of it. Every day is a joy to come in here to talk to the coaches and kids. Yes, it’s a lot of hours and responsibility, but I couldn’t think of a better job.”

Getting to work as an assistant for three years with Venerable was certainly beneficial for the new Knights AD. He continues to consult with the district’s other athletic directors, Ted Robbins, Matt Lyke and Mark Vander Kooi, in order to try to learn all aspects of his new job.

“I did a lot of the big-picture stuff for Hud because he was in the football coaching role but the little things that he did that maybe I didn’t pay attention to, now I’m kind of picking up on those,” Helbling said. “It’s kind of the little things that no one notices that are coming up that I’m learning as I go and

It’s a lot of organization, making sure that you have workers and contacting officials in order to make sure that events run smoothly and that they’re high-class events for our kids.

“I feel pretty fortunate to have worked with Hud. He’s a hall of fame football coach and had been athletic director for three years before I got here.

Just his expectations and the high standards that he held were very impressive.”

He’s learned a lot from being around many quality people in both Indiana and in the Lincoln-Way District and intends to utilize those experiences in his new role.

“I feel fortunate to be in this district, and I’ve been here for 10 years,” Helbling said.

“I started as a teacher and a dean at East and then became the department chair for P.E. at North before I came over

here. Each building is a little bit different but they have the same high standards. The expectations are high and that’s a good thing to have.

“I went to Munster High School and it was a great district to be in and I absolutely loved being there and playing there. And then I enjoyed playing at Purdue, where there were obviously high expectations being in the Big Ten at a Division I school. And then when I student taught, I was at Lafayette Central Catholic and it was the same thing. I was very fortunate to be involved in great programs.

“And then when I got my first taste of Illinois schools at Lincoln-Way, the expectations were even higher. The way that the administration has set the bar and how we’re getting to that and exceeding it is outstanding. It’s a great place to be. You have the support of the administration, staff and community, so it’s just a great place to be. I feel fortunate just to be here and I do not take it for granted at all.”

Helbling only has a couple of new head coaches on his staff,

including the new assistant athletic director, Jeremy Cordell, who also is the Knights head football coach. Having so many veteran coaches back figures to make the transition a relatively smooth one.

“We have a great staff,” Helbling said. “I’m very happy with them since they work hard and care about the kids.

They’re not all about wins and losses, they’re about making these kids better people, athletes and community members.

“We’ve got a couple of new coaches coming and a lot of veteran coaches who know what they’re doing and they’ve been there and done that. So it’s my job to make sure that they continue to move forward and we continue to show highclass teams and build on what we’ve already built. I want us to continue to go up in our competitive edge.

“Even though this is the original school, I’d put the facilities up against any other school. The fields, the fieldhouse and the gyms, they’re second to none. We have a great maintenance staff that

stays on top of things and take pride in what they do.”

While Helbling was certainly successful during his athletic career, he also realizes that sports in more than just wins and losses.

“I think that athletics teaches you a lot about life,” Helbling said. “It teaches you time-management skills since kids stay late and still have to study and get their homework done since grades are their priority. I also feel like sports teaches you competition and you’re always going to have competition in life. You’re going to be competing to be the best in whatever activity or job that you do.

“So I believe that sports teaches you a little bit of a competitive edge and also to be humble and to handle adversity. Sports have taught me a lot about life. Our coaches do a great job of preparing the kids for that competitive edge and that translates into confidence. And I think that a lot of people need confidence in order to move forward in the world, so I think that it’s a good thing.”

Roberts steps into leadership role for Minooka

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Last season, the Minooka boys basketball team finished 15-15, reaching the Class 4A regional championship before losing to Neuqua Valley.

With a bulk of their starting lineup returning this winter, the outlook looks promising for the Indians, who went 2-3 at the recent Morris Shootout.

On the first day, the Indians dropped their first game, 55-30, to Burlington Central, rallied late to beat Oak Forest, 53-51, and then lost, 64-50, to defending Shootout champion Normal Community. The next day they beat Kankakee, 49-37, in the first round of the Maroon bracket before dropping a 54-28 decision to East Aurora to end their day.

Unfortunately for Minooka during the shootout, not all of the players who coach Scott Tanaka plans to have on the floor during the regular season were able to attend.

That did allow for many younger players to get a lot of playing time, and thrust returning seniors Larry Roberts, Jon Lamas and Austin Pille into roles that they might not normally play.

“It was tough for some of these guys that are coming back to be missing some of our other players,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “But the ones that were here did a great job. They showed their leadership, and I am very proud of Larry, Jon and Austin.

“When you look at the team that will win this tournament, you will probably see that they have a lot of seniors here.

I am hoping that our younger players that were with us will see that and see the kind of dedication it takes.”

One of the standouts for the Indians during the shootout was Roberts, a terrific outside shooter that was asked to do a little more than his usual role.

“Larry has only gotten better,” Tanaka said. “He’s a bit of a gym rat and he works hard at his game. He was honorable mention all-Southwest Prairie Conference last year, and he has improved since then.

“He has been the focal point for us all summer. All the teams we have played know that, and he has done a real good job of getting and creating his own shots. He didn’t have to do that a lot last year, so that will only improve his game once the regular season comes around. He’s learned to be stronger going to the basket and that’s a good thing.”

Tanaka feels that Roberts’ improvement could help him get looks at the next level.

“Every college coach that’s at this tournament should know that Larry would be a great addition to their pro-

In the Indians’ victory over Oak Forest on Wednesday, Minooka trailed, 47-42, with less than two minutes remaining. Kyle Graebner started

the comeback by draining a 3-pointer, then Roberts got a steal and a layup.

He was fouled on the shot and made his free throw, giving the Indians a 48-47 lead with 1:17 to play.

Oak Forest’s Frank Rollins then scored with a minute left and teammate Lance Stewart made a pair of free

throws with 24 second left to put the Bengals ahead, 51-48. With 10 seconds left, Keegan Graebner scored on a putback for Minooka to cut the lead to 5150. After the Indians forced a turnover, Lamas hit a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer to give Minooka the win.

Quigley finished his career at Saint Xavier second all-time in wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched.

Quigley’s decorated playing career included six years

of professional baseball in the minor leagues with the San Diego Padres, Washington Nationals, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Joliet Slammers.

In 2012, he led the California League in strikeouts as a reliever, and was twice named to mid-season All-Star teams.

He went on to get his MBA in finance from St. Xavier while serving as the team’s graduate assistant baseball coach from 2008-2010, and

Diggins, who is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL, has 11,099 votes. Delle Donne, who is leading the WNBA in scoring, has 10,589.

“It’s great to know the fans are supporting me and are excited about what’s happening this season,” Delle Donne said.

Delle Donne has been voted a starter in the past two AllStar games, but hasn’t been able to play in either because of injury. JOLIET – Joliet Catholic Academy athletic director Dan Sharp, and girls’ assistant athletic director Tina Kinsella are pleased to announce Ryan Quigley (Class of 2003) has officially joined the staff of the girls basketball program at JCA. Quigley will assist with the lower levels of the program.

Quigley brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position, having worked years in the collegiate athletics arena.

He spent the last year and a half employed by the Prep Baseball Report, the country’s leading independent amateur baseball scouting service, as the Illinois Director of Scouting, coordinating player showcases, creating online content, facilitating the recruiting process between athletes and collegiate coaching staffs and helping to market the company through social media and other advertising avenues.

After graduating from JCA, where he was a three-year member on the varsity basketball team, Quigley went on to star at Saint Xavier University (2007) in baseball. He received an undergraduate degree in English with a minor in sec-

His two sisters, Allie and Samantha, were star multi-sport athletes at JCA and went on to star in basketball at DePaul University. Allie earned Ms. Basketball in Illinois and currently plays for the Chicago Sky in the WNBA, while Samantha is the head basketball coach at St. Francis in Joliet. His younger brother Jacob, also a JCA graduate, graduated from the University of St. Francis and is currently the head tennis coach for their men’s and women’s programs.

His mother, Christine Quigley-Strle (nee Prieboy), was an All-American basketball player at Joliet Central and the College of St. Francis. Quigley’s father Pat, played basketball at Joliet Catholic (1977) and the College of St. Francis.

He went on to teach and coach basketball at Joliet Catholic and Lincoln-Way Central.

Quigley is a graduate of St. Patrick’s Grade School in Joliet and is currently a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Joliet.

He resides in Shorewood with his wife Lindsey; the couple is expecting their first child in September.

Herrera’s bunt, blast leads JCA grad rallies Sky to win Cubs over Mets for sweep The ASSOCIATED PRESS

By BEN WALKER The Associated Press NEW YORK – By the time Jonathan Herrera and Miguel Montero homered, the Cubs didn’t really need the extra runs.

Once again, their pitchers had shut down the feeble New York Mets.

Herrera neatly filled in for Kris Bryant with a squeeze bunt and homer for three RBIs that sent Jake Arrieta and the Cubs past the Mets, 6-1, Thursday for a three-game sweep.

“We can pitch with anybody, we can swing the bats, our defense can play lights out,” Arrieta said.

The Cubs beat the Mets for a team-record ninth time in a row, and finished 7-0 against them this season. The Cubs outscored New York, 9-1, in this series at Citi Field.

“I can’t sit here and tell you we bludgeoned them,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “I know they’ve been offensively challenged. So have we. It’s the ebb and flow of the season.”

Arrieta (8-5) pitched eight sharp innings, helping extend the Cubs’ shutout string to 25 innings before the Mets man-

aged their only run of this set.

Arrieta gave up five hits, walked none and struck out seven. The crowd booed several times as New York kept making weak outs and breaking their bats – Cubs outfielders didn’t catch a flyball until the eighth.

Jacob deGrom (8-6) doubled and scored for the Mets, who have totaled a mere 23 runs in 14 games.

DeGrom delivered another hard hit, too. The righty exited after Herrera’s two-run homer in the sixth inning, then punched a Gatorade cooler in the dugout with his pitching hand.

Maddon gave Bryant a routine day off, wanting to rest the slugging rookie third baseman. Maddon also said Herrera often made good things happen when he was in the lineup, and the quirky skipper was right.

“He stays ready,” Maddon said. “He’s just a solid, solid guy to have on the team.”

The Cubs arrived in New York with a five-game losing streak, and Maddon brought in a magician to entertain the players before the series opener.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Allie Quigley scored 19 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 15.4 seconds left, to lift the Chicago Allie Quigley Sky to a 77-74 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Thursday night.

The Sun (7-3) held Elena Delle Donne, who leads the WNBA in scoring, to a season-low 12 points. Delle Donne came into the game averaging 28.7 points. She saw her streak of 58 straight free throws made come to an end in the first quarter.

Trailing by 11 points in the third quarter, the Sky (6-5) ral-

lied behind Quigley, a Joliet Catholic grad. Her 3-pointer with 2:14 left made it 73-72. After two free throws by Alyssa Thomas restored a one-point lead for the Sun with 1:58 left, neither could score until Quigley’s free throws.

After Alex Bentley’s floater missed, Delle Donne hit two free throws with 3 seconds left to seal the victory. Bentley’s wild 3 at the buzzer missed.

Bentley finished with a career-high 25 points to lead Connecticut.

Delle Donne fell eight free throws shy of the WNBA record set by Eva Nemcova in the 1999 and 2000 seasons. The 6-foot-5 forward did surpass Lindsay Whalen’s season mark of 54 straight in her last game.

She is 97 for 100 on the season.

Youth with special needs become superheroes at a Lemont camp

EMONT – When one teen temporarily shed his wheelchair for superhero flying powers, he wanted to sing the R. Kelly song, “I Believe I Can Fly.” To watch students who are confined to wheelchairs soar across a stage was powerful.

So said Sandy Doebert, president of Little Mountain Community Theatre in Lemont, former superintendent of Lemont High School District 210 and co-coordinator of Super Hero Camp, a one-week program for students with disabilities that provides them five magical days.

“A lot of parents really saw their kids blossom in that environment and have a lot of enjoyment,” said Joe Knutte of Homer Glen.

Knutte’s son, Thomas Knutte, 13, who has Down syndrome, attended Super Hero Camp last year, the first year camp was offered, as Iron Man, and then again this year as Thor.

Thomas thoroughly enjoyed camp, Knutte said.

“He’d come home and talk about his day,” Knutte said.

Knutte also is a board member at Little Mountain Community Theatre, mostly because of its commitment to being one of the partners for the Super Hero Camp, held at the Performing Arts Center at Lemont High School.

“I wanted to reach out to a community of people not exposed to something like that,” Knutte said.

At Super Hero Camp, the 25 campers participated in different workshops and stations, Doebert said. Sketch artists drew each camper’s superhero concept. Make-up artists transformed the campers.

They learned combat techniques – how to fight with lightsabers like a Jedi Knight – from stage combat artists.

They watched the antics of real stuntmen from Midwest Stunts. They recorded a music video, Doebert said.

Representatives from Lemont Police Department and Lemont Fire Protection District visited camp, talked about their roles as real superheroes and shared ways the campers could be heroes in their daily lives, Doebert said.

Finally, with the help of Hall Associates Flying Effects, the campers “flew.”

“The students were visibly impacted,” Doebert said. “This wasn’t their regular lives.”

Doebert said the discussions about offering a Super Hero Camp began when she and Heather Hutchison, who partnered with Doebert, first laid the foundation for a community theater.

In college, before Doebert studied education, she was

a musical theater major and wanted to return to the stage in some way when she retired, but in a way that would engage people of all abilities.

So she reached out to Hutchison, who has a son with autism and knew the importance of involving special needs youth in the arts.

Hutchison also had previously been hired to direct three musical theater productions at Lemont High School, including “Peter Pan,” Doebert added, and had brought in Hall Associates Flying Effects to assist with flight scenes.

In addition, Doebert said, Hutchison is the director of programming at Artful IMPACT!, a nonprofit organization that offers creative experiences for people of all ages and abilities in the Chicago area, and had the experience and artistic contacts to make a

Super Hero camp a reality.

“She’s an amazing individual,” Doebert said of Hutchison.

“She’s the genius behind [Super Hero Camp] and has the energy to make it happen.”

In the midst of the excitement of becoming superheroes, and improving confidence and body control, Super Hero Camp grounds the campers in one very important and universal skill.

“Socialization is one of the major focuses,” Doebert said. “On the first day, students come in overwhelmed.

There’s a lot of people and they feel a little bit intimidated. By the second day, they’ve made new friends and by the fifth day, they’re crying because camp is over.”

To facilitate socialization, Ellie Schober of Downers Grove coordinated the volunteers, including those that led groups of

students to the various Super Hero stations or worked oneon-one with students that required more attention. “[The volunteers] got to be their friend and buddy along the way,” Schober said.

Another volunteer, Nancy Sullivan of Lemont, a mental health nurse, remained onsite in case any of the campers needed medical assistance.

One older girl needed to be fed and toileted, which Sullivan also provided for her. Sullivan plans to volunteer again.

“It was one of the best things I ever did,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said she felt good about giving parents a threehour break each day and for playing a part in an unforgettable experience for the campers.

“They were so engaged and made friends,” Sullivan said, “just like any kid that goes away to camp.”

Classes start at the age of 3 years and are offered for youth and adults.

Each session is four days long beginning on Mondays and ending on Thursdays.

Participants will be introduced to aquatic activities through water exploration. Individuals will learn basic swimming techniques, advanced breathing techniques and mechanics of the four basic strokes (freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke). SHOREWOOD – Senior citizens had a fantastic time at the 11th Annual Seniors’ Senior Prom titled, “Enchanted Seniors,” on June 19, at The Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, 1100 N. River Road, Shorewood.

The evening featured dancing and raffles. The prom theme was “Enchanted Seniors.”

Timbers residents Vincent Burnetti and Barbara Burnetti were crowned king and queen, respectively, and shared the first dance of the evening.

periodically lying down or sitting with your legs elevated above the level of your chest. Also, wear support or compression stockings when you walk or stand for long periods of time. The stockings prevent blood from pooling in the veins, and prevent leg swelling and strain on the valves.

A doctor can treat varicose veins with sclerotherapy. This involves injecting an irritating substance into the vein, causing it to scar and shut down. Laser therapy can treat the smallest varicose veins.

More severe symptoms may require surgery. One option is vein stripping and ligation.

The abnormal veins are tied off and pulled out of the body through small cuts in the skin. (I’ve put an illustration of this procedure on my website, www.askdoctork. com.)

Another outpatient surgical procedure, ambulatory phlebectomy, also removes veins through small skin incisions.

It is performed under local anesthesia (you are awake). It involves smaller incisions, and therefore smaller scars.

You can walk right after the procedure is over, but need to wear compression stockings.

Another new treatment uses laser or high-frequency radio waves to seal off abnormal veins.

These treatments can relieve symptoms, but they don’t guarantee new varicose veins won’t develop in the future.

Dear Dr. K: I have varicose veins. For a while, they were just unsightly.

But recently, my leg has started to ache. What does treatment involve?

Dear Reader: Varicose veins occur when veins that lie just below the skin’s surface become swollen with too much blood. They usually form in the legs and appear blue, swollen, kinked or twisted.

Veins return blood back to the heart. When you use the leg muscles to walk or run, they also help pump blood up toward your heart. When blood moves upward toward the heart, gravity is pulling the blood downward away from your heart. (That’s not true, of course, if you’re lying flat, or standing on your head.)

To offset the pull of gravity, our veins have multiple little valves inside of them. These valves open when blood is pushed up toward the heart. But they close when blood is pulled downward by gravity, stopping the downward flow.

In a varicose vein, valves don’t close properly and blood gets pulled back down inside the veins. This causes pressure to increase inside the veins, and that results in swelling. The pressure inside the vein also can cause the wall of the vein to break, and blood to leak out into the tissues around the vein.

Varicose veins often run in families. Pregnancy, regularly standing for long periods and obesity also increase the risk.

When varicose veins cause symptoms, they often include: • A dull ache, pressure or heaviness in the legs; • Swollen feet and ankles; • Itching skin near the damaged veins.
