JOLIET – Police say a father broke his 1-year-old daughter’s leg when he was left alone with her earlier this month.

Martin Silva, 29, of the 100 block of Sesser Street, was arrested Friday on charges of aggravated battery to a child, domestic battery, reckless conduct and endangering the life or health of a child. He is being held in the Will County jail on $50,000 bond.

Lt. Brian Dupuis said police were called July 19 to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox to take a report of suspicious injuries to the infant. The girl had suffered a spiral fracture to her femur, Dupuis said.

“They were told the child’s mother had been carrying her and fell on the girl,” Dupuis said.

But when a detective went for another interview with the family Friday, a different story came to light, he said.

About 12:45 p.m. July 18, the mother left Silva to care for the baby while she was at the residence next door. She returned five minutes later to find her daughter crying intensely, Dupuis said.

“Silva [had] picked her up and swung her over his shoulder by one arm. It was not an accidental injury,” Dupuis said.

The parents told police they sought medical care in Joliet about 12 hours later but left due

to a long wait, according to police reports. They saw a pediatrician the next morning who told the family to take her to the emergency room, which is when they went to Silver Cross.

Department of Children and Family Services representatives were at Silver Cross Hospital and turned custody of the couple’s other child over to another relative because of previous reports on Silva, Dupuis said. Records show those incidents did not result in criminal charges.

The baby also has been turned over to the custody of another relative, Dupuis said.

Records show Silva has been jailed four times on traffic violations in Will County during the last three years.

Driver arrested for going 140 mph through Elwood

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Police say an intoxicated driver was going 140 mph Sunday on Route 53.

When stopped, police said, the driver disputed the speed gun reading and said he was actually going 150 mph.

Chief Fred Hayes said an officer was on patrol shortly before 5:30 p.m. near Tehle Road when he saw a silver 1999 Mercedes E300 heading north at “an extreme rate of speed.”

“The officer clocked the Mercedes at 140 miles per hour in the 55 miles per hour

zone,” Hayes said. The officer made a u-turn and was able to catch up to the car near Manhattan Road where traffic was congested because of Catfish Days in Wilmington.

Hayes said Ronald K. Ford, 54, had the stereo volume up so loud that the officer had to ask him to turn it down three times. Ford’s breath had a strong odor of alcohol and an empty bottle of rum could be seen on the passenger seat, according to police reports.

Ford, of the 7700 block of South Michigan Avenue in Chicago, had allegedly been leaving Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery where his

father is buried. He allegedly told the officer he’d wanted to see how fast the vehicle could go and described himself as an “expert driver.”

“When the officer told him he’d been clocked at 140 [miles per hour]. He said ‘No. I was going 150,’” Hayes said.

Ford allegedly failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the police station for a Breathalyzer test. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, speeding and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Ford was released on bond and the Mercedes was impounded.

Also new for Doppler is a radial noise filter that removes solar interference known as “sun spikes” from radar images, according to the National Weather Service. Another new feature will enable the radar to automatically determine the best settings for viewing velocity data for the strongest storms in the radar’s coverage area.

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Up until recently, six short-lived EF1 tornadoes spawned by two storms that tore through northern Illinois on June 30 might have been all but invisible to the National Weather Service.

The closest, which touched down briefly between Plainfield and Romeoville, was “embedded” in the storm front, said Matt Friedlein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Romeoville office. Another happened near Morris.

“All of the tornadoes happened in less time than the old radar scanning strategy takes,” Friedlein said.

Atmosphere scans by the weather service’s Doppler radar – the massive white bubble that towers over Lewis University Airport – once took about five minutes to complete. The Doppler – basically a rotating radar dish enclosed by the bubble – used to progressively scan the horizon from 0.5 to 19.5 degrees.

The Plainfield-Romeoville tornado was on the ground for less than three minutes, a short enough time to form and dissipate in-between scanning intervals.

But a new system installed in June at the Romeoville office now scans lower elevations every 1.8 to 2.5 minutes.

The system, called Supplemental Adaptive Intra-Volume Low-Level Scan or SAILS (see graphic), emphasizes scanning at elevations 0.5 to 3.1 degrees, the area where tornadoes touch down.

“We really focus on rotation closest to the ground,” Friedlein said. “A lot of storms rotate aloft, but to see that intensifying trend close to the ground is a key for meteorologists to issue tornado warnings.”

“The lowest angle down to the ground is where the key features of storms can be found,” Friedlein said. “Doppler allows us to see phase changes in the storm, such as changes in wind speed, direction and movement, including rotation.”

Just in time The system was almost made-to-order for the two June 30 storms. The powerful bow-shaped fronts, known as derechos, caused widespread damage in Will and Grundy counties, with downed trees and power lines knocking out power to almost 400,000 utility customers at one point.

The fronts were moving so quickly, up to 60 mph according to Friedlein, that the storms only lasted a few minutes before moving on to the east. And while most of the storm damage was credited to straight-line winds, the EF1 tornadoes were a major con-

“The tornadoes were shortlived but they covered a few miles in a few minutes, so they were really hauling,” Friedlein said.

An EF1 tornado is the second lowest rating on the sixpoint scale used by meteorologists to rate tornadoes and is considered “weak.” Still,

an EF1 twister can have wind gusts from 86 to 110 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

The tornado spawned in LaSalle County by the storm, for instance, made a beeline for the village of Earlville, destroying one home and damaging several others, but caused no injuries.

Yet technology only can go so far, and forecasters still rely on weather spotters for data.

“The technology is great, but we’re not at a point where we can see everything 100 percent,” said Harold Damron, director of Will County Emergency Management Agency.

“It’s definitely a combination of eyes on the street and technology working in concert with each other.

“We get eyes-on reports from law enforcement, firefighters or other types of spotters stationed out there and feed them into the weather service. It allows them to correlate what we see with what they see on the radar.”

Jeremy Hylka, director of the Joliet Weather Center, agreed.

“As much technology as we have, nothing beats the eye from a spotter in the field,” Hylka said. “It goes without saying.”

One great advancement has been the ability to narrow down the geographic focus of weather warnings, Damron noted. In years past, severe weather and tornado warnings would be issued on a countywide basis.

Yet issuing warnings too frequently in too wide of an area can lead to other problems.

Joliet resident to compete in reality/fantasy TV show

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For years, self-described fantasy nerd Patrick Higgins has had to sit on the sidelines as he watched his favorite characters – Aragorn from the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and Darth Maul from “Star Wars,” to name just two – steal all the action.

That changes Thursday night when a new genre-bending reality/fantasy television series, “The Quest,” is set to debut on ABC. Higgins, 41, a math teacher from Joliet, is among the 12 contestants competing on the show.

“It’s not our world. It’s another world called Everealm, and our presence there is prophesied,” Higgins said Monday of the reality show’s premise. “The people of the world, they’re basically under attack from this evil that comes every 1,000 years and they call in these 12 heroes from another world – that’s us – and the goal is to find the one true hero out of all of us.”

While the show is driven forward with the help of a scripted fantasy world, Higgins said he and the 11 other contestants are unscripted as they go through a series of competitions and challenges that tie into the show’s all-encompassing storyline. The show was shot in Austria last summer.

Mark Ordesky, executive director for “Lord of the Rings,” along with Bertram Van Munster and Elise Doganieri, both of whom worked on “The Amazing Race,” are among those working on the show.

“These are people pulled out of regular life and we put them in a world they dream of. It’s a fairy tale with real people in it,” Munster said during a video interview posted to ABC’s YouTube account.

Higgins said he can’t give too many details away about the challenges he and other contestants will face on screen. However, he said each of the contestants – or Paladins, as they’re known throughout the show – were trained in sword fighting, archery and how to ride horses to prepare them for the show’s filming.

Higgins said he’s excited for the premiere – when all those years of playing the role-playing game, “Dungeons and Dragons,” watching “Star Wars,” and brushing up on his favorite trilogy, “Lord of the Rings,” will finally pay off.

“Everyone really fell in love with what these producers put together for us,” Higgins said. “For a year, we had to keep quiet for the most part other than telling our family. I’m so excited,” Higgins said.

JOLIET – A reality show focused on cars in the Joliet and Chicago areas is racing off the blocks Friday on the Discovery Channel’s automotive channel.

“Garage Squad” is a reality show that has been filming in Joliet garages and elsewhere since March. The show will debut its first season 8 p.m. Friday on the Velocity channel.

Mechanics and hosts of the show traveled to individuals’ garages around Chicago and Joliet-area communities, helping them out with their project classic cars and restoration. It features Joliet-area mechanics working on cars of local residents and is directed by a Joliet native.

“I loved it,” said Joe Zolper of Joliet, head mechanic for the show. “Getting to help these people with their cars, we did do some really cool cars and really cool stuff. There’s a natural respect there between gear heads. We didn’t have a bad day.”

The director, Ted Lega, was brought up in Joliet as the son of locally known band director Ted Lega and steel sculptor Marsha Lega.

Nine episodes of the show were taped through the spring and summer. And the cast and crew are anxious about how the first episode will be received.

“We’re literally sitting here waiting,” Zolper said. “It’s nerve-wracking. It’s all about the people and what they’re going to like about the show.”

Work starts Aug. 4 at I-55 and Route 30 Just starting out?

THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – A four-month construction project on Interstate 55 ramps at Route 30 is scheduled to begin Aug. 4.

Motorists can expect delays, the city of Joliet said in a news release issued Monday on the project being done by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

“Although the I-55 exit ramps will remain open during construction, the work will require that current lane widths be reduced,” the city said in the release.

The state will work on both the northbound and southbound exit ramps from I-55 to Route 30. The project includes an additional left-

turn lane on the northbound ramp and an additional rightturn lane on the southbound lamp.

New traffic signals will be added to both ramps.

The estimated completion date is Dec. 15.

Jim Trizna, Joliet’s director of public works, suggested drivers could detour on Weber Road or Route 52 to avoid the congestion.

The city advises motorists to use caution in work zones, obey speed limits, be on alert for workers and construction equipment and seek alternate routes.

Plainfield parks budget up for hearing on Aug. 13

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Township Park District will hold a public hearing on a combined annual budget and appropriation ordinance for the 2014-15 fiscal year on Aug. 13.

The proposed budget begins July 1 and ends on June 30, 2015. A June draft budget has the budget at $9.4 million in revenue and expenses of $8.7 million. But that didn’t include several accounts including the paving and lighting, capital projects and park donation funds.

Last month, the park district board of commissioners heard a staff presentation about the park district’s current finances and long-term

projections.

That presentation included the suggestion of a tax referendum that would fund $69 million in capital expenditures over the next 10 years.

Capital expenditures include new operating equipment and machinery purchases, land acquisitions and property improvements.

Interim Executive Director Richard Grodsky told the board at that meeting that a tax referendum could be a good way to fund future projects.

The largest capital expense for the 2014-15 fiscal year is the DuPage River Trail project, which is budgeting at $567,033 funded by grants and a donation by the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The village Board of Trustees and Plan Commission had a chance to understand each other’s vision and direction during a joint meeting of the two bodies Monday.

In the first joint meeting in years, commissioners and trustees participated in a round-table discussion that highlighted some concerns the Plan Commission has had with recent votes by the Village Board.

While trustees still had differing views than commissioners regarding multi-family home developments and some

of the village votes that have gone against the Plan Commission’s recommendations, both boards were glad to open up a dialogue.

“I think we feel a little closer,” Plan Commission Chairman James Sobkoviak said after the meeting. “We have a better understanding of how the board works and their criteria for approving various actions.”

The round-table discussion was a result of comments made by commissioners at a June 3 meeting.

Several commissioners said at that meeting they felt undervalued because the Village Board had seemingly not examined or considered

the Plan Commission’s recommendations after several hours of working through residential and commercial development projects.

The specific projects they were talking about were a failed Dunkin’ Donuts proposal on Route 59 on June 2 and a town home development eventually passed by the board on July 21.

But on Monday, trustees and commissioners discussed how the Village Board can use the Plan Commission in the best way possible.

Commissioner Andrew Heinen said a developer who was denied a plan by the Village Board was frustrated because he jumped through all

the municipal hoops to make the plan beneficial for the village and the business.

He suggested a new process that would allow potentially controversial issues to appear at the board level first so developers and commissioners don’t have to spend large amounts of time and money on projects that won’t be accepted by trustees.

Several of the trustees agreed a new process could help communication between the two boards, but Trustee Bill Lamb said the real issue is the direction the commission is receiving from the board.

“I think the process is good,” Lamb said. “What you need to know is what’s on our

minds. ... I think if you know what the criteria is, we can be on the same page.”

Trustee James Racich said that commissioners and trustees should keep in mind that the Plan Commission is an advisory body while the Board of Trustees is a voting body.

“I know it becomes very frustrating,” Racich said about the Village Board voting opposed to the Plan Commission’s recommendations.

Mayor Michael Collins said the meeting was good for the commissioners to express their concerns.

“It’s good for both parties to voice their opinions so they can reinforce their importance to the village,” Collins said.

On Monday, the village took the first step in determining if two quiet zones would be feasible along the Metra Southwest and Rock Island train routes that pass through New Lenox. Village Board members unanimously approved of a contract for $15,000 for Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd. to conduct a study for the quiet zones.

New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann said the trains that pass through the Metra Southwest and Rock Island routes run late and pass through residential areas. He said he has received complaints from residents about train noises in areas on those routes.

Quiet zones are areas on a railroad where trains are required to not sound horns when approaching them, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. The quiet zones consist of rail lines at least one half mile in length that contain one or more crossing.

Village officials budgeted for the study, Baldermann said. The costs would go toward preliminary cost estimates of supplemental safety measures for quiet zones,

field work and diagnostic team meetings. Village Civil Engineer Will Nash estimated the study would be complete in the fall.

The village will work on the project with the Federal Railroad Administration, which will approve or deny any proposed quiet zones. Baldermann said he doesn’t anticipate any difficulties with the FRA on the quiet zones.

“It’s all going to be a matter of what they require us to do in order to have one,” he said.

Village officials also discussed changing the way water and sanitary sewer tap-on fees are calculated for apartments and multiple-family dwellings. Village staff proposed recalculating the fees so it is based on the size of the water meter serving the building rather than a flat fee, said Robin Ellis, the village’s community development director.

Board trustee David Smith disagreed with the proposal and said the new fees would not be equal among residen-

tial buildings.

“Whether you live in a condo or you live in a house, our impact should be the same,” he said.

The Village Board plans to

further discuss the proposal at their next meeting.

Trustees Annette Bowden, Keith Madsen and Ray Tuminello were absent from the meeting.

Damron said he got a clear view of the limitations of the older technology during last year’s anniversary of the Aug. 28, 1990, Plainfield tornado, when he viewed a black-andwhite radar image of the storm.

“It was just a shock to look at it on the traditional round radar screen,” Damron said.

For several of the grants, Zerbian said there is a “local match” portion that is required, meaning she must secure a set amount of donations from local businesses, individuals and governments in order to receive the grants.

“I constantly have to find new ways to meet that local match requirement,” Zerbian said.

In the upcoming months, GTS will begin using a new method of raising revenue to meet the local match – advertising.

The new advertising program will allow local businesses to rent ad space on GTS buses – inside, outside or on the windows. The four recently granted buses will be specially designed with more open space, on the interior and exterior, so GTS can provide more ad space to businesses.

“It’s like having a rolling billboard,” Zerbian said.

The funds generated through advertising can legally be put toward local match – which usually is comprised of local donations, not revenue – after state lawmakers changed certain requirements about what is defined as local match.

“Technically, it’s revenue, but they allow us to use that for our local match,” Zerbian said.

The new buses are expected to hit the road sometime in the next few weeks. Zerbian said GTS is still looking for advertisers and welcomes anyone interested to call 815-941-3060.

MORRIS – The Grundy Transit System received four new buses last week after waiting more than two years for the state to deliver on a grant.

In June, GTS acquired an additional bus that was promised in 2011, making that five new buses for the system in just one month.

“It’s raining buses over here,” GTS Director Sherey Zerbian said.

In total, GTS now has nine buses which will help meet the needs of the county’s ever-expanding ridership. From 2013 to 2014, Zerbian said the Grundy Transit System saw a 38.8 percent increase in ridership numbers, jumping from 7,900 to 11,000 riders in just one year.

“So far, the system has been very well accepted,” Grundy County Board Chairman Ron Severson said.

Because of the rapid growth and the limited number of buses, GTS recently began limiting rides and required customers to schedule rides in advance when possible.

Now, the transit system has a full bus fleet as well as reserve buses that can be used when others are being repaired.

Severson said that eventually the transit system may be able to start providing daily bus routes instead of working on a ride-by-ride basis. As it stands, most people have to call and set up service with GTS. “What I’d like to see one day is actual bus routes that go to specified places at specified times,” Severson said.

The new buses were made possible through a state grant, one of many that funds the GTS. The transit system relies almost entirely on state and federal aid for financial support.

OBITUARIES MARILYN ANDREE Marilyn Andree (nee Gehrke) passed away after a brief illness. She was born to William and Louise Gehrke on August 16, 1932, in Joliet, IL. She married William Andree on September 3, 1950.

She is survived by her husband Bill, children: Karen (Gary) Watts of Oswego, IL, Denise (Roger) Lucas of Blackstone, IL, Sandy (Will) Barbier of Ottawa, IL, Bruce (Kendra) Andree of Champaign, IL, and Craig (Frank Quinn) Andree of Chicago, IL. Surviving grandchildren are Jennifer (Sally Hines) Watts, Greg (Carrie) Lucas, Zachary Watts, Becky (Harry “Tripp” Simmons) Lucas, Chase Andree (Jordan Slade), and Lane Barbier. Surviving great grandchildren are Blake and Logan Lucas and Lucas Simmons.

Also surviving are two sisters Gail (Lee) Papesh and Nancy Pohlman, brothers-in-law Robert Johnston and Gordon Seil survive along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son Tommy, her parents, three brothers, two sisters, brotherin-law, niece and nephew.

Marilyn was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Streator, IL. Visitation will be on Wednesday, at Hagi Funeral Home, Streator, for immediate family with private graveside services.

MARY JANE BUTTERFIELD Born: Sept. 24, 1928; in Morris, IL Died: July 27, 2014; in Morris, IL Mary Jane (Muffler) Butterfield, 85, of Morris, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 27, 2014.

Born on September 24, 1928, in Morris, Mary Jane was the daughter of the late Charles H., Sr. and Helen (Feeney) Muffler.

She married Charles “Charlie” G.

Butterfield, Sr. on October 12, 1952, in LaSalle, Illinois.

Mary Jane was a graduate of ICS and the Class of 1946 of Morris High School. She worked for the family businesses at Ace Hardware and Morris Skating Rink. She and her husband Charlie founded and operated Echo Lanes in Morris for over 60 years and continues in operation today. The bowling alley began with 12 lanes, gradually adding 16 more lanes for a total of 28 lanes.

After her husband’s passing, Mary Jane, their son, Tim, and daughter, Marlene, operated the bowling alley along with the help of 12 grandchildren.

She was a member of the Illinois Valley Bowling Association and the Bowling Proprietors of America.

Surviving are children, Edward T. Butterfield of Arlington, TX, Timothy A. Butterfield of Dwight, Mary Marlene Walls, Holly Ann Waldron, and Barry J. Former Seattle Mayor 13 Paul Schell dies at 76 The ASSOCIATED PRESS SEATTLE – Former Seattle Mayor Paul Schell, who led the city during the World Trade Organization protests in 1999, has died. He was 76.

Schell died Sunday morning at a Seattle hospital surrounded by family, according to Mayor Ed Murray’s office.

“Paul will be greatly missed. He was truly committed to the people of Seattle, working to improve the city both as an elected official and private citizen. He was dedicated to the lives of the people of this city, evidenced by his countless contributions and the legacy he built here,” Murray said in a statement.

Murray described Schell as one of the city’s great “builders.” Under Schell, Seattle approved funding to build the world-renowned downtown library. He also

led efforts for the first parks levy and played a key role in constructing the Olympic Sculpture Park and the City Hall. He championed the arts and began a massive effort to draft plans for all 37 neighborhoods.

Schell, the city’s 50th mayor, served one term as mayor from 1998 to 2002 before losing a re-election bid to Greg Nickels.

His one term was marred with street clashes. The city’s response to the WTO protests was heavily criticized and led to the resignation of the police Chief Norm Stamper. The city also was sued by dozens of the protesters, eventually settling.

In 2001, a riot broke out during Mardi Gras in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, leaving one man dead and scores assaulted.

Schell is survived by Pam, his wife of 51 years, and his daughter, Jamie.

Italian tenor Bergonzi dies at age 90 Friday The ASSOCIATED PRESS MILAN – Italian tenor Carlo Bergonzi, considered one of the most authoritative interpreters of Verdi’s operas, has died at the age of 90.

The Italian Auxologic Institute in Milan on Monday confirmed Bergonzi’s death on Friday. No cause was given.

Born in the province of Parma not far from Verdi’s hometown, Bergonzi started his studies at age 16 as a baritone, only to discover later that his musical gifts lay in the tenor range. Bergonzi served in World War II in an anti-aircraft artillery unit, and was interned in a German forced labor camp for three years.

Bergonzi’s international career took off after his 1956 debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he sang the role of Radames

in Verdi’s Aida. His Met career spanned 32 years and 22 roles.

The Met recalled in a tribute that Bergonzi “was particularly praised for the beauty and warmth of his singing and for his elegant attention to style and phrasing.”

He also sang nine seasons at La Scala in Milan and 21 seasons at the Arena open-air summer theater in Verona.

Bergonzi ended his artistic career in 1995, devoting himself to teaching singing. For his 90th birthday on July 12, the town of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth dedicated a concert by the Italian Philharmonic Orchestra to Bergonzi.

He is survived by his wife Adele and the couple’s two sons, Maurizio, born on the same day Bergonzi made his debut as a tenor, and Marco.

More state workers making over $100,000

SPRINGFIELD – A published report has found that more than 10 percent of Illinois government employees made more than $100,000 in 2013 – up 1,600 from a year earlier.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reported Monday that overtime and back-wage payouts were responsible for many of the larger salaries.

The paper reported that 7,800 employees – just over 10 percent of the workforce – topped $100,000 in salary last year. They received a total of $966 million, or about 21 percent of the state payroll.

Anders Lindall of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union says compensation figures are skewed. He says staff shortages are causing overtime and back wages wouldn’t pump up salaries had they been paid on time.

New law expands Illinois Holocaust commission

SKOKIE – Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation that will expand the Illinois Holocaust and Genocide Commission.

Quinn signed Senate Bill 3129 on Sunday at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in the northern Chicago suburb of Skokie. The new law increases the number of commission members from 18 to 22 and makes one of the commission members a student.

The commission was created in 2010. It works to increase public awareness of the Holocaust and other genocides.

Lollapalooza looms, so do Chicago traffic woes

CHICAGO – One of the country’s most popular music festivals starts in Chicago in a few days and that means traffic headaches for some motorists.

Sections of some roads in downtown Chicago are already being closed as Lollapalooza organizers set up for the threeday event that starts on Friday.

Around 100,000 people are expected to attend each day of the festival in Chicago’s lakefront Grant Park. The rock band Kings of Leon and rapper

Eminem are among this year’s headliners.

Most streets shut down during the festival will reopen by early next. But a few sections will stayed closed for a few additional days as festival organizers clean up and haul away stages.

Carpentersville man pleads guilty to bomb threats

ST. CHARLES – A Carpentersville man has pleaded guilty to making bomb threats against court facilities in Kane County last year.

The Kane County state’s attorney said Monday that 22-year-old Akiel W. Davis pleaded guilty Friday to felony counts of unlawful possession

of a stolen motor vehicle, burglary and disorderly conduct.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison.

Prosecutors say Davis called 911 on Sept. 4, 2013, and falsely said four bombs were hidden at the Kane County Judicial Center.

They say he also called the court clerk and said many people in Kane County would die.

The court buildings were evacuated for several hours.

Police: Chicago men arrested for shooting boy

CHICAGO – Chicago Police say two men have been arrested in the shooting of a 3-yearold boy hit in the abdomen and hip.

The Chicago Sun-Times

reported 19-year-old Alger Sanchez and 22-year-old Anton Aseves were charged Sunday with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder. They were charged with one count each of aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm.

Police say 3-year-old Jason Ares was critically wounded Friday night while standing next to his mother outside his home.

A Mount Sinai Hospital spokeswoman tells the SunTimes he was listed in fair condition Sunday afternoon.

The two men were scheduled to appear in bond court Monday. It wasn’t immediately clear if they have attorneys.

In trying to implement the cease-fire over the weekend, “U.S. Secretary of State of State John Kerry ruined everything,” wrote columnist Ari Shavit in Monday’s Haaretz, Israel’s leading liberal newspaper. “Very senior officials in Jerusalem described the proposal that Kerry put on the table as a ‘strategic terrorist attack.’”

United States Ron Dermer sought to distance his government from that view, saying, “The criticism of Secretary Kerry for his good faith efforts to advance a sustainable cease-fire is unwarranted.”

“There is broad understanding between Israel and the United States about the principles for a sustainable cease-fire, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the United States to advance that goal and a durable solution to the problems in Gaza,” Dermer said Monday.

U.S. officials disputed the notion that Kerry had formally presented Israel a cease-fire proposal and cast the document in question as a draft given to the Israelis as part of an effort to gain their input in seeking a weeklong cessation of hostilities. Officials said the draft was based on an earlier Egyptian ceasefire proposal that Israel had accepted but Hamas had rejected.

ANOTHER VIEW

U.S. must secure southern border, whatever it takes Arguably, no more important, pressing domestic issue exists today than the crisis on America’s border with Mexico.

In fact, Gallup said the percentage of Americans citing immigration as the nation’s No. 1 issue surged to 17 percent this month, up from 5 percent in June, to its highest percentage since 2006.

Immigration ranked ahead of dissatisfaction with government, the general economy, unemployment/jobs and health care.

The legal, social, economic, security and humanitarian implications of continued illegal immigration and the virtual tidal wave of Central American children pouring across our nation’s southern border can’t be overstated.

As America continues its struggle to answer the question of what to do about illegal immigrants and migrant children who already have entered the country, a greater sense of urgency must be applied to improved border security.

In other words, before we can treat the wounds effectively, we first must stop the bleeding.

Whatever it takes.

Today.

A growing number of Americans agree.

A CNN/ORC International survey released Thursday showed 51 percent of Americans believe forming a plan to stop the flow of undocumented immigrants should be the main focus of immigration policy. Forty-five percent said the top priority should be developing a plan to allow undocumented immigrants who have jobs to become legal residents. That’s a “notable shift” from February when Americans said legal status was more important than border security, 54 to 41 percent, CNN said.

Some important steps have been taken to improve border security in recent years, such as increased manpower within the Border Patrol, but they aren’t sufficient. Each day the southern border remains porous, border-related problems grow larger.

What should be done?

We support any and all steps to seal the border tight, including more fence, more surveillance technology, even more Border Patrol agents, and, yes, a temporary mobilization of National Guard troops ordered by President Barack Obama. Congress also should revisit the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 under which nearly 60,000 Central American children have arrived on our doorstep since last fall.

Frerichs needs to up his game Back in January, state Sen. Michael Frerichs formally kicked off his campaign for Illinois state treasurer and posted a video online touting the fact the he’d ended “free, lifetime health care for state legislators.”

Actually, Frerichs had voted against that bill in the General Assembly. Frerichs’ campaign had to pull the video and replace it with a new one, even though he’d been planning his formal launch for at least a year.

In April, Frerichs appeared to flip-flop on his long-standing position that the comptroller’s and treasurer’s offices should be merged.

“People have said to me,” Frerichs told a WBBM Radio interviewer, “’Wouldn’t it just be a lot more efficient if we just had one financial officer?’ And I’ve said yes, we could become very efficient, efficient like the city of Dixon, Illinois, who just had one chief financial officer and she was able, from this small little town, over several years to take something like

Frerichs was quickly forced to restate his support for the office merger.

A few weeks ago, Frerichs was endorsed by the Illinois Education Association. At the kickoff tour, a Springfield reporter asked an IEA official why her organization backed Frerichs over Republican state Rep. Tom Cross. The official quickly deferred to her union’s spokesman, who was mostly silent for 25 very long and uncomfortable seconds while he tried to come up with an answer. He eventually cited the union’s “long association” with Frerichs and Frerichs’ support for more state revenues.

Since at least February, Frerichs has been pushing an idea to make the treasurer’s investment fund more Illinois centric.

“The current Republican

Treasurer has placed a premium on investments outside of Illinois and the U.S., over the benefits that can be gained from investing in our people, our infrastructure, and our businesses,” he wrote on a Daily Herald questionnaire published on Feb. 14. Over and over since then, Frerichs has criticized incumbent Treasurer Dan Rutherford for investing Illinois dollars “overseas.”

But Frerichs either didn’t check the details of Treasurer Rutherford’s investment portfolio or didn’t think anyone else would because the one and only “overseas” investment in Rutherford’s portfolio is in bonds issued by the Israeli government.

Oops.

Support for Israel has long been an important statewide political issue in Illinois, dating back to at least U.S. Sen. Charles Percy’s first win and then his 1984 loss to Paul Simon because Percy had allegedly become less supportive of the nation.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

So, last week, Tom Cross’ campaign blasted Frerichs for his investment proposal.

“One country that would be singled out under Frerichs’

plan is Israel,” a Cross press release noted. “The office of Treasurer currently has $25 million invested in foreign bonds, all with Israel.”

Treasurer Rutherford later confirmed that Israeli government bonds are the only overseas investment his office makes. So, if, indeed, Frerichs wants to divest the state treasurer’s portfolio of “overseas” investments, those Israel Bonds are the one and only instruments he could sell off.

Frerichs quickly sent out a statement noting that he’d

co-sponsored a bill to encourage more purchases of the Israeli bonds and attached a quote from several Jewish state legislators claiming that he was “among the most outspoken and vocal advocates for the State of Israel in the Illinois General Assembly.”

The Frerichs campaign later issued a statement which said in part: “He would continue investing in Israel bonds as Treasurer. To say anything else is flat out wrong.”

But Cross’ hit was politically legitimate. He didn’t

go overboard and frantically accuse Frerichs of being anti-Israel or anti-Semitic, he merely pointed out a simple fact: Frerichs has repeatedly demanded overseas divestiture and in the real world that can only mean one thing, Israel Bonds.

I wouldn’t expect that this easily preventable problem will go away any time soon.

Frerichs has earned a reputation for being a hardworking state legislator. He’s easy to talk to, but educated and ambitious. He raised a

ton of money early on. The downstater worked overtime to keep all potential Chicago-area candidates out of the Democratic primary. Most Democratic primary voters are in Cook County, so that was a real coup for the Champaign County legislator.

But he’s obviously not living up to expectations. He needs to up his game.

The U.S. should strengthen border dialogue with Mexico and Central American nations (a meeting held Friday at the White House between President Obama and the presidents of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador was a positive step).

Simply put, the flow of illegal immigrants and migrant children into the U.S. can’t and shouldn’t be allowed to continue. The federal government must send the strongest signals possible, including to individual states and foreign governments, of the seriousness with which it views this issue.

Members of Congress will take the entire month of August off. Obama, who spent most of last week on a fundraising trip to California, is counting down the days to his own vacation on Martha’s Vineyard.

Contributing to fading prospects for action on border security is the fact this is an election year. Even though border security shouldn’t be a partisan issue and both Democrats and Republicans should be alarmed at where this current path eventually

might lead, the realities of politics appear to be getting in the way.

Still, we can hope.

Enough talk, enough pushing this issue off to another day. Border security needs to become priority No. 1 – not simply in Austin, Texas, but from the White House to the Capitol in Washington.

Does tighter border security answer questions related to the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants or the tens of thousands of Central American children already here? No. Does improved security allow the U.S. to prevent border problems from growing worse,

which they absolutely will if the federal government doesn’t meet its responsibilities? Without question, yes.

Perez, who will be a junior

at Lincoln-Way East, was the top performer in a foursome that also included Huston Gass, who shot a 76, and Mark Boykin, who finished with a 77.

“I played with a good group of competitors, which made me try a little harder,” Perez said. “The course was great, the greens were nice and the weather was fine, too.

I play here a lot and I like this course and I placed third here in the Club Championship.

“I’m pretty happy with how I’m doing. I’ve had a few bad rounds this summer but then got back up and shoot rounds like this. I’ve played in a few IJGAs and scored in the top 10. I’m excited for the high school season and feel that I can put up some good scores this year.”

Gass, the University of St. Francis athlete who easily captured the Park District’s Junior Tournament Boys A title three weeks ago and Boykin will join Krupa and Perez in what figures to be a very competitive foursome in Tuesday’s finale.

In the younger age group, there will be a showdown between Rodriguez, who will be a sophomore at Peotone, and Pluth, an incoming freshman at Joliet Catholic.

While Pluth easily won the Boys B title in JPD’s Junior Tournament, he figures to have a tougher time in round two in this tournament against Rodriguez, who has steadily improved throughout the summer.

“This was the first time that I’ve played this course,” Rodriguez said. “And actually that’s the first time that I’ve ever shot under 80. I was hitting everything straight and good and I was happy, so my attitude was good. Things went perfect and I was very confident.

“This is my fourth tournament this summer, and I’ve came in fifth in my first one and then third and second in my last one, so I’ve been moving up.”

JOLIET – A golfer’s first round on Woodruff Golf Course can be a real test, considering the many tree-lined fairways, small greens and elevation changes on the historic eastside links.

But an initial trip to Woodruff didn’t faze the competitors who managed to claim the lead after the first round of the Joliet Park District’s Joliet Junior Amateur.

Jon Krupa fired a 74 to grab a one-stroke advantage over Victor Perez, Jr. in a tightly-contested battle atop the 16 to 18 year old division.

And Thomas Rodriguez and Jake Pluth both turned in scores of 79 to distance themselves from the rest of the field in the 13 to 15 year old group.

Although Krupa will be a senior at Downers Grove South, he is no stranger to golf in this area, competing regularly at Broken Arrow.

After winning a conference title as a sophomore, he experienced a down junior year. He’s hoping that a good summer will help him conclude his high school career on a high note.

“I love playing par fives and I’m usually not the best at playing [par threes],” Krupa said. “But this course is really nice and it was a nice change to play on it and I came out here and played really well.

And I was very surprised to have the best round today.

“I’ve had a really good summer. I’ve been working at Oak Brook Golf Club, which is a great course, and have had a lot of time to practice over there. And I play Broken Arrow all of the time and my pro is Mike Camastro. He’s a great teacher and I love working with him.”

Prock wins STARS battle of attrition Midwest Baseball Classic Saturday at Grundy County Speedway returns to Plainfield South

MORRIS – To finish first, you must first finish.

The proverb never rang more true than it did during Saturday night’s D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget feature at Grundy County Speedway. In the 30-lap war of attrition, several front-runners suffered mechanical troubles and only five cars lasted the distance.

In the end, it was 18-year-old Austin Prock who weathered the storm of futility to win the “Bob Tattersall Challenge.”

Kyle Hamilton posted the top qualifying time of 14.382 seconds. Newlywed Tyler Baran of Plainfield won the first heat in front of the Hamilton brothers, Nick and Kyle.

Prock won the second heat over Ryan Probst and Nick Wagner.

Because of the eight-car

inversion, Kyle Hamilton started the feature from Row 4. New Lenox’s Ryan Probst and Channahon’s Billy Hulbert were in Row 1. Probst led at the start. Kyle Hamilton passed five cars in even laps to grab third behind Probst and Prock.

Caution came out when Kyle O’Gara and Hulbert made contact while battling for fourth. Hulbert dropped out while O’Gara continued with a bent right front and without right front brakes.

The caution erased Probst’s cushion. On the restart, he kept the lead while Prock and Kyle Hamilton battled for second. On lap 12, Hamilton moved into second.

As he closed on Probst, on lap 14, his car stalled.

On the restart with 16 laps to go, Prock passed Probst to take the lead for good. Nick Baran moved into third, pass-

ing Hamilton with 14 laps left.

Ryan Probst dropped out with a drive shaft problem with 11 laps to go, moving Baran into second and Nick Hamilton into third.

Baran exited late with engine woes and Prock took his third STARS victory at Grundy while extending his points lead. Rounding out the top five were Nick Hamilton, O’Gara, Tyler Baran and Tyler Trainor.

In other action, Patrick Bruns had the quick time, won his heat and 36-lap feature after passing his Mike Wallace Racing teammate, Jimmy Clark, with 20 laps left. Also sweeping was Dallas Frueh in CSR Super Cups Anthony Metallo held off a race-long challenge from Cullen Camasta to take the INEX Legends victory. Tom Schnabel won his heat and the Classic Modified feature.

Baker benefits again in late-model feature SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – For the second consecutive week Friday, Plainfield’s Ricky Baker took advantage of a late mishap involving cars in front of him to win the late-model feature in the stock-car racing program at Grundy County Speedway.

Front-runners John Nutley and Brett Sontag collided in Turn 4 as they approached the white flag, and Baker finished with his sixth win of the season.

Baker, who also was the fast qualifier, won by 0.324 seconds over Dave Gentile. Eddie Hoffman, Billy Knippenberg, Scott Koerner, Mark Sontag Jr., Brandon Clubb, Chris Cooling, Larry Schuler and David Einhaus rounded out the top 10.

Sontag passed Nutley on the final lap to win the first heat. Erik Pierce was first and James Gregait second in the second heat.

Matt Clemens took the lead from Kevin Murphy on Lap 19 and went on to win his first Mid-American feature of

the season. Points leader Tom Knippenberg was second, followed by Murphy, Joe Vinachi, Kevin Gentile, Luke Baldwin, John Ventrello, Vince Cooper, Chuck Yuris and Cody Clubb.

Knippenberg had the fast time. Cooper and Ventrello finished 1-2 in the first heat. Jim Kachel won the second heat ahead of Jeremy Clubb.

In Street Stocks, fast qualifier John Senerchia won the feature, with points leader Eddie League second.

Then came Rita Fields, Billy Rud, Jake Bradley, Rob Scamen, Bob Davis, Tim Stewart, Craig Matteson and Dar-

rell Gay. Don O’Leary won the first heat, with Fields second.

Scamen beat Rud to the finish line in the second heat.

Spencer Leake had the fast time and won the pure stocks feature. Justin Mikel was second. Zach Sontag, Austin Blackwell, Will Shepherd, Alex Clubb, Brian Clubb, Cirk Lindemuth, Dan Schmeissing and Trevor Martin completed the top 10.

Sontag and Blackwell finished 1-2 in the first heat, Clubb and Michael in the second and Steve Hespen and Eric Davis in third.

“He was outstanding,” Hall said. “At one point he reached base 15 times in a row.”

Joliet Catholic’s Nick Dalesandro competed in the Chicago Pitch & Hit Showcase a couple of years ago and played for Hall.

“Talk about a versatile athlete,” Hall said. “He said, ‘Coach Hall, you can put me anywhere you want.’ He could catch, pitch, play center field, shortstop, anywhere. You can see why [JCA coach Jared Voss] says what he does about him.”

Hall said Dalesandro just missed earning the ultimate for his age, a spot on the USA Junior National Team. He said he is on the alternate list.

Grosse and Dalesandro are members of the roster of Team Illinois White, which Hall is managing, in the Midwest Baseball Classic, which he is operating beginning Tuesday and continuing through Thursday at Plainfield South.

West pitcher/outfielder Robert Talarico and Tigers third baseman/pitcher Griffin McGuire also will play for Team Illinois White.

The other teams in the event are Team Illinois Tan, Colorado, New York, Indiana and Missouri. The format is a round-robin. Team Illinois White has games at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

“Our team finished 3-2 last year,” Hall said. “We were 5-1 the year before that – got beat on a walkoff – and 6-0 the year before that.

“I really enjoy this because it gets me back into coaching and it’s a chance to coach good players.”

Not that Hall needs something to do. He is a board member with the Pitch & Hit Club and the Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County.

He conducts baseball clinics worldwide and coaches USA national teams.

As soon as the Midwest Classic concludes, he will fly to Minnesota to participate in Ron Coomer’s golf outing there. There, he will visit with Lockport graduate and Minnesota Vikings first-year head coach Mike Zimmer at the Vikings’ training camp.

A couple of months ago, I wrote that Jordan Palmer is every bit as gifted physically as Josh McCown and that he would be as good or possibly even better if Cutler goes down.

But Palmer has struggled in minicamp and the first four days here in Bourbonnais and I’m beginning to think I was wrong.

Fortunately for Bears fans, quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh disagrees.

“He knows the system very well,” Cavanaugh said Monday morning. “He’s a tall, strong-armed guy who’s smart and he makes good decisions, so what else do you need in a quarterback other than experience?”

Some have wondered if the Bears are so enamored of Palmer, why is Jimmy Clausen here?

General manager Phil Emery told us on the first day of training camp it’s because when they brought in Clausen for a look, he had “The best workout we’ve seen from a quarterback since I got here.”

Then there’s this year’s first of two Bears draft picks in the sixth round, David Fales.

“What I like about David is, for a rookie who really got exposed to our offense in a pretty quick minicamp, he’s learned the verbiage really well,” Cavanaugh said. “He can hear it, he can get a visual of it and he can call it in the

huddle and not miss a beat just like the other guys. He’s an accurate passer. If you’re a good decision-maker and you’re accurate and you’re smart, then you’ve got a chance to play and we’re excited about him.”

For his part, Clausen knows he’s in a dogfight for the backup quarterback spot.

“I feel good each and every day just coming out and doing my best just to compete and work as hard as I can,” Clausen said. “I’m still getting a grasp of the offense, but I’m still a long ways away.”

It looks to me and a number of other veteran observers like, if the season started tomorrow, Clausen is the second-best QB in camp.

Cavanaugh is just glad coach Marc Trestman doesn’t have to make that call yet.

“It’s very early, I’m just trying to rotate ’em (Palmer, Clausen and Fales) through,” Cavanaugh said. “They’re great about it, too. They work well together, they like each other, they’re encouraging to each other, they know there’s competition and there’s no such thing as a depth chart right now other than Jay Cutler is the starter.”

The question the Bears must answer in the next five weeks is, should Cutler need relief at some point this season, are any of the other QBs in camp up to the task?

I have my doubts. But, it is worth noting that coming out of camp last year many knowledgeable insiders were questioning what McCown had done to secure the backup spot, too.

BOURBONNAIS – Barring serious injury issues, the Bears’ 2014 offense is going to be very good, and quarterback Jay Cutler appears poised for his biggest year yet.

Some believe there is reason to fear Cutler missing appreciable time, even if that conclusion is not supported by the facts.

After taking over as the starting quarterback in Denver as a rookie, Cutler started 37 straight games before being traded to the Bears. He then made 41 of a possible 42 starts in his first three years as a Bear before breaking his thumb and missing the final six games of 2011.

Cutler returned to start 15 of 16 games in 2012 and then missed five games last year because of another fluke injury, one most of us never had even heard of until he suffered it. Then he tried to return to action too soon.

In spite of questions about his durability and toughness when he missed the second half of the 2010 NFC title game with a knee injury, if anything, Cutler has proved himself to be tough and durable over his eight seasons in the league.

But if he does get dinged this year, the Bears might have a real problem.

Joliet settles for split at Traverse City STAFF REPORTS TRAVERSE CITY, MICH – Andrew Busby tossed a threehit shutout in seven innings and struck out three to lead the Joliet Slammers to a 2-0 victory in the opener of a Frontier League doubleheader at Traverse City on Monday.

The hosts rallied from a 3-2 deficit by scoring twice in the fifth inning and once more in the sixth to win 5-3 in the second game.

Joliet collected single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to kick off the series with the Beach Bums, which was supposed to start Sunday but was delayed because of the weather.

The Slammers finished with four hits with Grant DeBruin collecting three of them. He drove in Joliet’s second run with a single that brought in Danny Hernandez. Max Casper scored Joliet’s first run in the fourth inning when JD Dorgan drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

In the second contest, Joliet took a 3-2 lead after scoring twice in the fourth inning, but Traverse City moved ahead for good an inning later.

Jose Garcia and DeBruin each had a pair of hits in the nightcap.

Chris Epps, Adrian English and DeBruin drove in runs for Joliet, which concludes the road trip Tuesday.

Wada earns 1st MLB win

By JACK CASSIDY The Associated Press CHICAGO – Tsuyoshi Wada earned his first big league win, pitching seven strong innings Monday night as the Cubs defeated the Colorado Rockies, 4-1.

Anthony Rizzo drove in two runs to back Wada (1-1).

In only his third career start in the majors, Wada cut through the Colorado lineup, allowing one run and five hits.

It was a far cry from his last outing, when he lasted four innings and gave up five runs in a loss to San Diego.

PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet hospital offers innovative treatment for liver cancer

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – In what may sound like a futuristic scenario, a local cancer patient just received a shot of millions of tiny, perfectly round glass spheres, about one-third the size of a human hair and impregnated with radioactive yttrium-90.

The tiny beads immediately attached directly to little arteries in his liver, right next to a colony of deadly cancer cells. During the next 10 days, the radiation did two important jobs: It cut off the oxygen-carrying blood supply to the tumor and killed the cancer cells with high-levels of beta radiation.

The procedure, called radioembolization, was a first for Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and a first for the Joliet area as a whole. According to interventional radiologist Joshua Tepper, who led the team that performed the procedure, of the six hospitals registered in Illinois to perform radioembolization, four are university medical hospitals and two are community hospitals, including Presence.

Tepper trained at Northwestern University, which is a leading facility for instruction of the procedure.

“It’s been very exciting,” Tepper said. “A lot of our patients want to stay in the area when they’re being treated.”

So far, radioembolization is just for liver cancer, whether the tumor originated in the liver or metastasized from another organ. The liver is difficult to treat, Tepper said, especially with traditional radiation therapy, as its tissue is fairly dense. So when a high enough dose of external beam radiation is administered, it can significantly damage healthy liver cells.

Treatments other than transplants will not usually cure liver cancer; they typically can prolong life and reduce pain.

This makes radioembolization a good weapon in the arsenal, Tepper said, one with fewer side-effects than chemotherapy or chemoembolization. When to use it depends on the patient and the type of liver cancer he or she has.

Tepper said.

So far, Tepper said, radioembolization is just being used to treat liver cancer. The treatment doesn’t cure the cancer but it can prolong life and reduce pain. It does come

with risks, include radiation hepatitis and liver failure.

“It’s a little challenging,” he said of the procedure, “but it’s worth it to push the boundaries of what we can do in a community hospital setting.”

Tepper’s patient was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2009, which had spread to the liver. Several courses of chemotherapy put the colorectal cancer in remission, but the liver cancer had worsened, Tepper said. The patient’s oncologist referred him to Tepper, and the procedure was performed July 17.

Two weeks before the procedure, the patient had an angiogram, where the blood vessels serving the tumor were precisely mapped. Where and how much yttrium-90 would be injected is different for each patient, Tepper said.

The procedure itself involved several staff members: Tepper, a nuclear medical physicist, a special interventional radiology nurse, a radiology technologist and a nuclear medical technologist.

Despite the complicated preparatory work and the number of staff, the procedure lasted only about 25 minutes.

A small flexible tube was

inserted into the hepatic artery and the radioactive microspheres were injected to the exact site of the tumor.

The spheres permanently lodge in and block the blood vessels. The radiation in them emits strong beta rays that kill the tumor cells.

The radiation only travels about two millimeters, Tepper said, so minimizing destruction to healthy tissue. The half-life of the isotope is short – only 64 hours – so the spheres emit radiation for only about 10 days.

The patient went home two hours after the procedure.

“It went really well,” Tepper said. “He did have the expected nausea and weakness and a little loss of appetite, but the side effects were fewer than he would have had with some other treatments.”

Some bridge experts are known for making unusual bids. Then, even when they produce an obvious call, opponents tend to assume that they were being “clever.”

In this deal, which occurred during a social game, look at the South hand. After two passes, East opens one club. What is the “obvious” call for South?

East’s opening bid would not meet with universal agreement.

Since partner is a passed hand, game is unlikely. There is a good case for opening one heart (or one spade). Yes, partner will expect a five-card suit, but if West ends on lead, he is more likely to find a good choice than after a one-club opening.

I think South should overcall three no-trump. Yes, it looks weird with those major-suit holdings, but he has eight winners. A dummy worth its salt will add a ninth.

And a slam is unlikely opposite a passed partner.

If South bids three no-trump and it is passed out, what should West lead?

Unless South is being subtle, he has a long, solid minor and is ready for a club lead. West should choose a major, presumably a heart.

Note that the defenders can take the first eight tricks, four hearts and four spades. But after a minor-suit lead, South has 10 winners.

At the table, South passed over one club (often the right move when long and strong in opener’s suit), West responded one heart, East raised to two hearts, and then South overcalled three clubs. That was passed out and made with an overtrick.

When people laugh and ridicule others, it makes them only more self-conscious and more clumsy.

Another way to help would be to have him examined by an ophthalmologist and a neurologist.

His problem may be poor depth perception or a neurological or balance issue. And while you’re at it, consider having him evaluated for a learning disability, which may be the cause of his academic difficulties.

Dear Abby: I have a pet peeve. I hate it when people ask to “try my meal” or to have a taste, especially

Different cancers require different treatments Dear Doctor K: I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.

My doctor says my cancer is slow-growing and that we should just monitor it for now. Why not treat it right away?

Dear Reader: I know this will sound odd, but cancer is not always bad for your health. There are types of cancer that can cause no symptoms, that grow slowly (if at all) and that are unlikely to spread. There are types of cancer that you will never know you had. You will die with these cancers, but you won’t die from them.

Prostate cancer is a good example. Many men die with, but not from, prostate cancer. The autopsy shows tiny cancers in their prostate. Sometimes, these cancers can’t even be seen with the naked eye, but only under a microscope.

So, while it’s natural to want to rid your body of cancer as quickly as possible, that’s not always the best option. If you get treatment for a cancer that never is going to harm you, then the treatment could be worse than the disease.

That’s why when a person is diagnosed with prostate cancer, the doctor tries to determine

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff how likely it is to harm you. The doctor studies the piece of the cancer that has been removed by the biopsy.

Traditionally, doctors have used something called the Gleason score to describe how aggressively your cancer is growing. The higher your Gleason score, the faster the cancer cells are multiplying. Doctors also are starting to study which genes are turned on in the cancer. This is another way of estimating how aggressive the cancer will be.

Your doctor also has tried to determine if the cancer has spread and, if so, how far. This is called “staging” the cancer.

Your prognosis is based on the stage of your cancer at the time of diagnosis. Your doctor has recommended having no treatments now, and just watching the cancer closely with repeated tests.

This means your tumor does not look aggressive, and there is no evidence that it has spread.

If you have a non-aggressive type of prostate cancer that has

not spread, your age is a factor in deciding on treatment. The older you are, the more likely you are to die with but not from the cancer. Slow-growing prostate cancers can take 15 to 20 years or more to grow. You’re more likely to die from another condition.

Even if your cancer is unlikely to harm you, why not just have surgery to take it out? Because surgery and some non-surgical treatments involve risks, such as erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence.

Men like you often choose active surveillance (also called “watchful waiting”).

This strategy involves monitoring the cancer closely and regularly. If the cancer advances or becomes more active, you can pursue more aggressive treatment.

On the other hand, if you tend to worry a great deal, you might prefer treatment to waiting and worrying – even if your tumor is slow-growing. Just be aware of the risks of treatment.

Tomboys have strong leadership qualities Dr. Wallace: I think my sister is too old to still be considered a tomboy by our family. She is 18 and all she seems to enjoy is competing athletically with her boyfriend and his buddies. Her boyfriend was a starter on our high school boys’ basketball team, and my sister was the high school girls’ basketball team’s best player. Every weekend my sister and her boyfriend play basketball one-on-one in our driveway.

During football season my sister plays flag football, again with her boyfriend and his friends.

My sister has already been awarded a college scholarship to play basketball. My mom doesn’t like her being a tomboy because she thinks it makes my sister seem unfeminine.

Help! – Sister, Chicago Dear Sister: Your sister might be considered to be a tomboy, but there is nothing whatsoever that is “unfeminine” about tomboys.

Janet Hyde, a psychologist at Bowling Green University in Ohio, points out that research shows that most tomboys have strong leadership qualities.

When they mature into women, they often enter into exciting careers such as space exploration and scientific research. Most tomboys become self-assured, well-adjusted women.

I graduated from high school in June and my brother has finished his first year at Arizona State University.

Beatlemaniacs, Directioners, Beliebers – why do they scream?

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post When One Direction performs on the North American leg of their “Where We Are” tour starting in August, you’ll have to squint your ears to hear the boy bands’ hits amid a more ancient and fascinating sound: the emptying of adolescent lungs.

Obviously, there will be screaming – high-decibel, high-pitch swells that push hard on the eardrums and then harder, toward the surreal. It’s an abstract sound that JC Chasez has had years to ponder as a member of the multi-platinum juggernaut ‘N Sync. But putting the power of that communal wail into words still isn’t easy.

“Sound is energy,” Chasez says. “And the entire room is producing sound, not just the people onstage, so when the entire room is resonating with every human being producing, it’s a very exciting feeling.”

Surely. But what’s behind that feeling?

Why do young women assembled at pop concerts express their collective ecstasy with the most alarming sound available to their bodies? Why do they scream?

In some ways, today’s young fans are simply imitating the ritualized shrieks of the generations that preceded them, from the Beatlemaniacs to the Beliebers.

And while today’s tween screams aren’t reserved exclusively for young male heartthrobs, concerts by Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift don’t seem to generate quite the same sonic fervor as a performance from One Direction or Ed Sheeran.

Since the splashdown of Elvis Presley in 1956, the American media has often characterized the din of young female fans gathered in the presence of a pop idol as “hysteria” – “a description that denigrates their musical engagement,” according to a 2003 article written by Australian researcher Sarah Baker.

“Not only do these screaming, crushing bodies animate these [performance] spaces,” Baker writes, “but they also make the pop experience feel intensely real for both the girls involved and the wider public.”

So when the lights go down at a 21st century boy band revue, we aren’t hearing a helpless, hysteric howl.

We’re hearing a complex expression of individualism and collectivity – perhaps with a dash of Darwin thrown in.

The noisy throngs at a pop concert qualify as an “expressive crowd” – a gathering in which the participants are given implicit permission to abandon decorum and freak out.

“When men cry at a sports event, it’s very similar” to the screaming that takes place at a One Direction concert, says author Rachel Simmons. “It wouldn’t be okay for men to do that anywhere else.

But the sporting event sanctions that behavior.”

Simmons is the author of “The Curse of the Good Girl,” a book in which she argues that young women are unfairly asked to squeeze into an impossible mold of politeness and modesty. Simmons says a concert is a unique event that gives girls the rare opportunity to break out of those roles.

In their day-to-day, non-concert-going lives, girls don’t have a lot of permission to scream,” she says. “A concert offers an oasis from the daily rules about being good girls. Screaming is about letting go and leaving the confines of being the self-conscious pleaser.”

That’s one way to explain why so many concerts are filled with screaming girls instead of screaming boys.

“Screaming is a way to control a situation,” says Michelle Janning, a professor of sociology at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. “When you’re a kid, and a girl, you don’t have control. Young people don’t have a loud voice in society, so screaming in this kind of space is a way to

have a voice. Literally.”

Janning also believes that girls have felt an expectation to scream ever since Beatlemania spread across the land in 1964. “We’re constantly being socialized to see crowds of girls screaming at rock stars,” Janning says. “So we’re following the crowd, doing what we’ve seen other people do. But we also want to stand out as individuals.”

Both Janning and Simmons agree that concert screaming ultimately provides girls a chance to express their individuality while reinforcing their place in the larger group. And it can also be a place for competition.

“Adolescent girls are really invested in the acceptance of their peers,” Simmons says. “But there’s a competitive element to fandom and fan-girling – and screaming is an expression of that fandom. So girls are doing it not only to assert their passion for the band, but to compete with each other and to signal to each other that, ‘This is what I care about.’ It’s part competition, but partly a way to connect.

During adolescence for girls, that’s a very complex and important drive.”

Chasez of ‘N Sync says he’s seen that competitive connection manifest through fascinating displays of vocal teamwork.

The screams that most frequently caught the singer’s attention onstage during ‘N Sync’s heyday often came from “groups of three or four,” Chasez says.

“They’d be holding hands and jumping up and down, screaming together.”
