Several Lockport police officers and a Will County Sheriff’s deputy were at the restaurant to serve free lunches from a limited menu in support of Special Olympics athletes.

Customers were asked to leave a donation at their table to benefit the roughly 21,500 athletes with intellectual disabilities and 18,500 “Young Athletes” under the age of 7 in Illinois.

It was another opportunity for the Lockport police to interact with the public in a positive way.

“Helping out Special Olympic athletes and seeing their smiles on their faces and seeing how happy they are makes it all worthwhile,” said Lockport Police Officer Debbie Schenk.

Schenk organized the event at the restaurant on 151 Tonti Drive, where law enforcement helped serve a menu consisting of pulled pork sandwiches, corn, freshbaked bread with honey-cinnamon butter and beverages.

plained to them what Special Olympics is about.

“It’s always good to help out and it’s just such a great cause,” said Lockport Police Officer Vinnie Vitacco. “It’s something that I can feel good to help out with.”

Police agencies work with the Special Olympics nonprofit organization on the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which is considered the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for the organization, according to its website.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run partners with Texas Roadhouse restaurants annually to run the benefit lunches.

Last year, donations from the benefit lunches in the state amounted to $60,000, said Alexandra McMillin, Special Olympics communications manager.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for all parties involved, from law enforcement to the Special Olympics to Texas Roadhouse,” she said. “We’re so appreciative of their efforts. It continues to transform the lives of the athletes we serve.”

STEAMPUNK SUMMER Lockport art series celebration explores ‘Victorian sci-fi vibe’

Besides being a sci-fi throwback to the Victorian Era, for Lockport, steampunk was the key ingredient for the inaugural Summer Art Series. The event over the weekend, called the Visionaries, invited artists to contribute works for public display that are steampunk in nature.

“I believe [Lockport] is a hidden treasure and we wanted to emphasize our hidden treasures with these beautiful artworks that are highly unusual and fun,” said Wendy Streit, Summer Arts Series committee chairwoman.

Steampunk can be described as a romanticized look at the late 19th century with the added element of science fiction gadgets, she said. She said it can also be described as having a “Victorian sci-fi vibe.”

Streit, who also is the wife of Lockport Mayor Steven Streit, led a committee of local community leaders to organize the Summer Art Series, which began June 14 and will end Aug. 17. During the past weekend, the art series included a gala celebration that invited visitors to come dressed in steampunk fashion and enjoy live entertainment from musicians such as Frenchy & the Punk and

“The powers that be wanted to throw a costume party,” said John Lustig, committee member and Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery director.

The steampunk style seemed suited to Lockport because it is a city that went through extraordinary change with the I & M Canal and local industries, he said. Lustig said the committee wanted to find a way to expand the city’s “footprint outside the

normal walls” and steampunk seemed like the way to go.

“What we found was there is a ton of not only interest in the concept but in the fashion and the art,” he said.

The style is playful and eclectic. For Lustig, it can on the one hand feel like “Doctor Who” and on other hand like “Burning Man.” Steampunk borrows from so many pieces of art and artistic movements that people can make it their own

thing, he said.

“You can put your own spin on it and it gives you that power to be imaginative and creative,” Streit said.

Lustig said he was working on a costume himself for the gala, which may be a long peacoat with goggles, as the later is a heavy motif in steampunk.

It’s all about accessories, he said.

Artists such as Jason Brammer and John Siblik contrib-

uted works that complemented the theme of the art series event. That artwork was still on display for the gala celebration Saturday that scheduled the likes of DJ Vourteque and musical group Candy Town, who Streit said was particularly unique.

“I like to call them a combination of vaudeville circus 40s kind of music mixed together,” she said.

Also scheduled was Moonie the Magnificent, a comedian who does one act where he never speaks an entire word but draws laughs, she said. Musical duo Frenchy & The Punk describe themselves as “sultry French-born singer, percussionist and a fiery punk rock guitarist,” according to their website.

The ultimate goal of the gala and art series is to attract people outside of Lockport while also exposing them to the things that make the city enjoyable, Streit said.

The events also highlight the art scene in the city.

Lustig said it was important for him to attract people to the city from places beyond its borders. The Joliet Public Library’s Star Wars Day was one other example of how a town can achieve that goal, he said.

“I think we can all do more like that out here to be good stewards and make it more audience accessible,” he said.

Illinois Steel Company offices During the last part of the 19th century, the Chicago area became one of the leading centers of iron and steel production.

The growth of this industry was a combination of entrepreneurial spirit, local raw materials and geographical advantages linked to the waterways.

In 1869, the Union Coal, Iron & Transportation Company developed an iron works on Collins Street. By 1873, the company had reorganized as the Joliet Iron & Steel Company and owned two blast furnaces, two five-ton Bessemer converters, an iron rail-making mill and a steel rail mill were in place on its 90-acre site.

By the end of the 1880s, the local and national mills began to expand and consolidate efforts. One of the first great mergers occurred in 1889, when most of the area mills combined to form a new entity, the Illinois Steel Company and, eventually, the company was purchased by the United States Steel Corporation.

The then photograph shows the Illinois Steel Company office building that was constructed in a Neoclassical Romanesque architectural style in 1891. The large arched entryway faces Collins Street, and the limestone exterior and dentilated gabled roofline pediment still are visible in the now photograph. The Joliet Steel Company main office is considered a local landmark and is part of the larger Joliet Steel Works complex, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Joliet student wins trip to the Bahamas One of 20 students selected for Shedd Aquarium Marine Biology program

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Shayne McConnell left the Joliet area behind this summer to study the aquatic flora and fauna of the Bahamas.

McConnell, 17, earned the opportunity when he became one of 20 students to visit Bimini, Bahamas, under the High School Marine Biology program run by the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. He set sail on the aquarium’s research vessel, the R/V Coral Reef II in early July and it was an experience that reinforced his desire to study marine biology.

“I’d say I gained a lot of confidence that I want to do this for a career, and I can actually do the things that people need to do to study fish,” said McConnell, who will be a senior at Joliet West High School in the fall.

The Bahamas trip, which lasted for a week, allowed him to embrace his fascination by studying plankton, counting fish, measuring sea grass and observing sea animals.

McConnell also joined other students in seine fishing. They went to a specific location, usually a grassy area in the sea, and set up a long net to capture fish. After counting up the fish, they would release them.

The Shedd Aquarium is celebrating 40 years of running the High School Marine Biology program this year. High school students age 14 or older who permanently reside in Illinois or surrounding states who have completed one year of high school science are eligible for the program. The program was enough fun for McConnell that he wants to try it again.

“If I got the opportunity,” he said, “I would love to.”

Western Flyer, a ship chartered

by Steinbeck, his first wife Carol and Ed Ricketts, was dry docked in Port Townsend, Washington, he decided to take a trip.

The Western Flyer is a 76-foot purse seiner built in Tacoma, Washington in 1937. As a result of their journey on the fishing boat in 1940, Steinbeck and Ricketts collaborated on the book “Sea of Cortez,” and Steinbeck wrote “The Log from the Sea of Cortez.”

More rode 130 miles in four days to see the boat, pulling along a small cart overfilled with his belongs which added 40-plus pounds to his bike.

The ride was difficult, he said, because of the hilly terrain. Going uphill caused pressure and pain in his eye.

He had to take a lot of breaks to reach his destination.

But the trip was worth it.

Along the way he saw beautiful scenery, men fishing in the rip tide for salmon, Dungeness crab fishermen with their traps, and a bald eagle flying over a low tide in the early morning.

“I camp along [the] water front so I smell the sea, I hear the sea and I see the sunrise,” he wrote in one of his emails.

More is back in Seattle and, under doctors’ advice, not doing uphill rides until his eye heals. The retina has attached, which is the good news, but a cataract keeps him from seeing much more than “soupy fog” out of that same eye. There may be another surgery in his future.

“My muscles are sore [from riding] but I feel in better shape for doing this, and I show many [people] ‘Raise the Flag: Lean Thy Arms,’ like a traveling book seller.”

Jim More is a familiar name in the Channahon/Minooka area to those who grew up here and graduated from Minooka Community High School some years back.

More graduated from MCHS in 1975 and was an honors’ athlete during his junior high days. He attended Joliet Junior College and earned a bachelor’s of science degree from Northern Michigan University.

Due to varying circumstances More became homeless and by 2008 was living in a tent along the Illinois River in Morris.

All along More has been journaling and writing. In 2012 he and his bicycle, Blue Cloud, headed to Seattle Washington where he has lived ever since.

More chronicled his childhood and other true stories in his first book, “Raise The Flag: Lean Thy Arms.” He is still homeless and continues to write and take photos for upcoming books.

A team of audio/video professionals from SoundHoggs Productions out of Seattle have taken an interest in More and have done a short video titled “This is Jim More.”

Mickey McMullen, of SoundHoggs, said they intend to do a longer video about More’s life and his writings and photographs.

Among SoundHoggs’ credits are “Top Chefs 7” and “The Amazing Race 15.”

I wrote about More a year ago and check in with him from time to time. He recently called me by accident, but we talked for some time. He told me about his continuing health struggles and his latest journeys. We also shared a few good laughs.

More suffered a detached retina in the spring of last year.

He didn’t get it checked right away because the symptoms cleared up shortly after. But in October of 2013 he started going blind in that eye.

He has had several operations to reattach the retina, but because of the delay it’s not certain if his sight will return.

It’s a waiting game, he said.

Habitat hires its first executive director

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Based on the job description drafted by Habitat for Humanity board members, the organization’s first-ever executive director needed to be superhuman.

Human resources, fundraising, marketing, volunteer coordinating: the list of desired skills and duties was extensive.

“We realized we were expecting a little bit of a superhero,” said Julie Wilkinson, board president for the Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity.

Who they found was Sarah Peterson of Morris, and although she doesn’t posses super powers, Wilkinson thinks she will be a perfect fit for Habitat for Humanity.

“Sarah stood out to us because she really had all of the traits we were looking for,” Wilkinson said.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit that builds affordable homes for families that earn 30 to 60 percent of the area’s median income and are unable to qualify for a conventional home loan. The homes come with a no-interest mortgage, with mortgage payments going to fund other Habitat projects.

Peterson was appointed by the Habitat board earlier this month, making her the first executive director in the local organization’s 18-year history.

“It’s the first time I’ve been in an executive director role, and it’s the first time Habitat has had an executive director, so we can grow together,” Peterson said.

In her new, part-time position, Peterson will locate additional fundraising sources, recruit volunteers, increase community awareness and, in general, help the organization expand so it can provide more affordable housing to local families.

As of this year, the organization is constructing its eleventh local home.

Born for adventure Shorewood woman experienced the world’s wonders

Viola Ramsay was fascinated with planes. While living in Texas in 1941, she rode in one with an open cockpit. popcorn, Jeschke added.

While attending the former Link school, Ramsay persuaded the owner of a speakeasy to buy her fundraising candy, Jeschke said. After graduating from Plainfield High School, Ramsay worked as a bookkeeper, saw the construction of the Rialto Square Theatre and attended its first silent movie, got her first car and then drove to Yellowstone National Park with her girlfriends.

Through the years, according to information supplied by the family, Ramsay white-water rafted on the Animas River in Colorado and in Costa Rica on a river, surrounded by crocodiles and with howler monkeys. She rode elephants in India and also in Katmandu (where Ramsay also bathed her elephant in the river), camels in Egypt and an ostrich in Africa.

She rode in the bubble of a helicopter over the pineapple fields and waters of Hawaii, a hot air balloon over the jungle, the bullet train in Japan, the Chunnel train through the tunnel from London to Paris, the “Blue Train” in South Africa, and the local train across the Altiplano of the Andes in South America, before crossing Lake Titicaca.

Ramsay traveled in a dugout wooden boat through the waters of New Guinea and on

the Amazon River, where she fished for piranhas. She rode through Shanghai in a rickshaw, on dog sleds in Alaska and the Swiss Alps, and was carried in a sedan chair on the shoulders of two young Chinese men down more than 100 steps tilted at a 45-degree angle.

She snorkeled in the waters of the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the South Pacific at Fiji. She traveled on a Chinese working ship through the “Three Gorges of China,” on a banana boat to Cuba and Guatemala and on a felucca down the Nile River.

At home, Ramsay entertained, for up to 500 guests, Jeschke said. After retiring to Arizona, Ramsay participated in many production aspects of the Sun City Players.

Being childless left Viola Ramsay and her husband, George, free to travel. According to information supplied by her family, Ramsay visited 50 states, Europe 15 times and more than 20 other countries.

Near the end of her life – Viola was 101 when she died June 12 – Viola lived at the Timbers of Shorewood, Donna said, in proximity to her childhood home.

“She might not remember what she had for breakfast,”

Jeschke said, “but she could still do math in her head.”

SHOREWOOD – Family gatherings around the dining room table became mini adventures when Viola Ramsay came to visit, said Ramsay’s nephew, Ed Dollinger of Joliet.

Stories ranged from Joliet era life in the early 20th century to anecdotes about Viola’s travels. Dollinger said he was fortunate to join her on a 30day European tour in 1983.

“She never wanted to watch the world go by,” Dollinger said. “She wanted to be part of it.”

Ramsay grew up in Bird’s Bridge, an area of Troy Township that is now Channahon, Dollinger said. Perhaps, said Ramsay’s niece, Donna Jeschke of Mazon, Ramsay learned about faraway places when she bid farewell to a cousin as he boarded a train to serve in World War I. Her before-and-after school chore was herding the cows, which the 5-year-old Ramsay did on horseback, accompanied by her dog. The outgoing Ramsay would chat fishermen along the I&M Canal as well as the gypsies and hobos traversing the same trail.

“She said that hoboes really did carry a stick with a red handkerchief tied to it with all of their belongings,” Jeschke said.

Daring adventure and Ramsay made a sweet pair, even then. Once, when the rest of the family enjoyed a Sunday nap, Ramsay climbed on top of a kitchen cabinet to grab a knife to sharpen her pencil, Jeschke said. She slipped, cut her thumb nearly off and held it in place until the doctor arrived.

Ramsay’s parents, afraid of fire from the candles, wouldn’t allow a Christmas tree, Jeschke said. Again while the family slept, 10-year-old Ramsay grabbed an ax, headed to the woods, cut down a tree and then dragged it back, where the family strung it with

Fiction writer Bel Kaufman, 103, dies

By HILLEL ITALIE The Associated Press NEW YORK – Bel Kaufman, the witty and spirited fiction writer, educator and storyteller whose million-selling “Up the Down Staircase” captured the insanity and the humor, the pathos and the poetry of the American high school, died Friday at age 103.

Kaufman, the granddaughter of Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem and a vital link to Yiddish culture, died at her Manhattan home after a brief illness, said her daughter, Thea Goldstine.

Kaufman was a middle-age teacher and single mother in the mid-1960s when her autobiographical novel was welcomed as a kind of civilian

companion to Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22,” a send-up of the most maddening bureaucracy.

Like “Catch-22,” even the title of Kaufman’s book became a tell-all label, shorthand for all the senseless rules students and educators could never quite follow.

“Up the Down Staircase,” a scrap- Bel Kaufman book of letters, notes and memos, follows a few months in the life of the idealistic young Sylvia Barrett, the new teacher at Calvin Coolidge High School. She is a kind soul staggering under a blizzard of administrative nonsense and student impudence. When she’s not being reprimanded

for her kids’ failure to memorize the school’s alma mater song, she faces a crowded but endearing class of misfits and other characters, from rebel Joe Ferone to the brown-nosing Harry A. Kagan.

When the book was released in 1965, The New York Times’ Beverly Grunwald praised Kaufman’s “refreshing way of stating the facts, of breaking down statistics into recognizable teenagers, of making you smile, be contrite and infuriated all at once.”

Kaufman became a heroine for teachers and students worldwide. “Up the Down Staircase” has sold more than 6 million copies and has been translated into 16 languages.

It was made into a film of the same name, starring Sandy

Dennis, and it helped start a trend of candid education books. Kaufman was delighted to learn that teachers in one of her former schools were warned not to let her see any memos, for fear they would end up in a book.

Decades later, another New York teacher-turned-celebrity, Frank McCourt, would praise “Up the Down Staircase” as one of the few honest looks at the public school system.

“She got all the craziness of the paperwork and the administrators and supervisors,” McCourt, author of the memoirs “Angela’s Ashes” and “Teacher Man,” said in 2005.

She was born Bella Kaufman in Berlin and raised in Odessa, her first language Russian. Her family fled in 1923 to escape

the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, and she arrived in the U.S., at age 11, speaking no English. She was forced to begin her American schooling in the first grade, her classmates years younger. The kindness of her teacher inspired her to become an educator, too.

Language was a temporary handicap. She caught up quickly, graduated magna cum laude from Hunter College in 1934 and received a master’s degree in English from Columbia University two years later. Around the same time, she married Sidney Goldstine, with whom she had two children.

Literature was in her blood, not just from her grandfather, but from her mother, Lyalya Kaufman, a popular and prolific writer.

Police: 1 man charged in Chicago train robbery

CHICAGO – Police say a 20-year-old man has been charged with boarding a Chicago Transit Authority train, pulling out a gun and robbing passengers of wallets, phones and jewelry.

Chicago police said Sunday that Michael A. Taylor of Chicago is charged with four felony counts of robbery with a firearm and two felony counts of aggravated assault in the July 16 incident.

The afternoon robbery had occurred on the Orange Line coming from Midway International Airport toward downtown.

Police said they believe two men boarded the train, brandished their weapons and loudly announced they were robbing passengers, before going from person to person.

Gov. Quinn to live off equivalent of minimum wage

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn agreed on Sunday to briefly live on the equivalent of a minimum-wage salary as he rallies support for a Nov. 4 Illinois ballot measure on the issue.

The Democrat made the pledge at a campaign event focused on the nonbinding ballot question, which asks voters if the minimum wage should be raised for people over age 18 from $8.25 to $10 by 2015.

“There’s a principle as old as the Bible,” Quinn told supporters at the Federal Plaza in Chicago. “If you work 40 hours a week, if you’re doing your job, you shouldn’t have to live in poverty.”

More Illinois counties could join camera program

CHICAGO – Half a dozen counties in a central Illinois judicial district could soon join a 2-year-old pilot program that allows cameras in select state courtroom.

A request to participate should be submitted to the Illinois Supreme Court by this fall, with the high court likely to give its approval, Sangamon County Circuit Judge John Schmidt told Springfield’s State Journal-Reg-

ister.

The then-chief justice of the state’s high court, Thomas Kilbride, launched the cameras-in-court initiative in 2012 – with the aim of possibly one day ending in-court camera bans for good.

The counties in the 7th Judicial Circuit that Schmidt hopes will be included in the program are Sangamon, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Morgan and Scott.

Around 40 of Illinois’ 102 counties are already taking part.

Virus drugmaker fights pediatricians’ new advice

CHICAGO – A costly drug given mostly to premature babies is at the center of a clash between the manufacturer and the

nation’s leading pediatrician’s group, which recommends scaling back use of the medicine.

The dispute involves new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which say medical evidence shows the drug benefits few children other than very young preemies.

The medicine guards against a common but usually mild virus that can cause serious lung problems.

It’s the second time in two years that the influential group has recommended narrowing use of the drug, sold by MedImmune under the brand name Synagis. MedImmune is fighting back with full-page newspaper ads that say the updated policy threatens “our most vulnerable babies.”

Cahokia Mounds excavators make interesting find

COLLINSVILLE – Experts say student archaeologists excavating the Cahokia Mounds in southern Illinois have made an interesting find that could reveal information about Native American religious beliefs.

The students, from the University of Bologna in Italy, discovered a bundle of whelk shells and bird bones that were tied together.

“Most of what we find are fragments of pottery shards and little bits of arrow points and things like that,” Lori Belknap, the executive director of the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society, told the Southern Illinoisan.

The ship soon sets sail for South America, its 80,000 tons of coal destined for power plants and factories, an export of American energy – and pollution.

In the U.S., this coal and the carbon dioxide it will eventually release into the atmosphere are some of the unwanted leftovers of an America going greener. With the country moving to cleaner natural gas, the Obama administration wants to reduce power plant pollution to make good on its promise to the world to cut emissions.

Yet the estimated 228,800 tons of carbon dioxide contained in the coal aboard the Prime Lily equals the annual emissions of a small Ameri-

can power plant. It’s leaving this nation’s shores, but not the planet.

“This is the single biggest flaw in U.S. climate policy,” said Roger Martella, the former general counsel at the Environmental Protection Agency under President George W. Bush. “Although the administration is moving forward with climate change regulations at home, we don’t consider how policy decisions in the United States impact greenhouse gas emissions in other parts of the world.”

This fossil fuel trade, which has soared under President Barack Obama, threatens to undermine his strategy to reduce the gases blamed for global warming. It also reveals a little-discussed side effect of countries acting alone on a global issue. As the U.S. tries to set a global example by reducing demand for fossil fuels at home, American energy companies are sending more dirty fuels than ever to

other parts of the world, exports worth billions of dollars every year. In some cases, these castoffs of America’s clean energy push are ending up in places with more lax environmental standards, or where governments are resistant to tackling the emissions responsible for global warming.

It’s a global shell game on fossil fuels that at the very least makes the U.S. appear to be making more progress on global warming than it actually is, because it shifts some of the pollution – and the burden for cleaning it up – onto another country’s balance sheet.

“It’s not taking responsibility,” said Thomas Power, a research professor at the University of Montana who has worked for environmental groups and clean energy foundations and has pushed for a more honest accounting of emissions. “It’s shifting the responsibility to someone else.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – A 20-yearold man died Sunday after lightning struck 13 people at a popular Los Angeles beach and a golfer on Catalina Island during rare summer thunderstorms that swept through Southern California, authorities said.

The man was taken from Venice Beach and pronounced dead at a hospital Sunday afternoon, Los Angeles County coroner’s Lt. Larry Dietz said. His

identity was not immediately released.

PLYMOUTH, Calif. – Firefighters in Northern California on Sunday battled a wildfire that has destroyed 10 homes and forced hundreds of evacuations in the Sierra Nevada foothills, while a fire near Yosemite National Park destroyed one home and grew significantly overnight.

East of Sacramento, the Sand Fire in the Sierra foothills has burned about 3,800 acres, roughly 6 square miles, of steep, rugged terrain near wine-growing regions in Amador and El Dorado counties since Friday, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The fire, which has also destroyed seven outbuildings, was 35 percent contained Sunday afternoon, but it threatens hundreds of homes in the drought-stricken region, according to CalFire.

“All of the vegetation in the area is struggling. It’s burning very easily,” spokeswoman Lynne Tolmachoff said. “It causes the fire to be a lot hotter and to spread more easily.”

The Sand Fire has prompted authorities to evacuate about 500 homes and close several roads near the town of Plymouth. Nearly 1,500 firefighters, aided by aircraft including a DC-10 air tanker, are working to control the blaze.

MONROVIA, Liberia – One of Liberia’s most high-profile doctors has died of Ebola, officials said Sunday, and an American physician was being treated for the deadly virus, highlighting the risks facing health workers trying to combat an outbreak that has killed more than 670 people in West Africa – the largest ever recorded.

A second American, a missionary working in the Liberian capital, was also taken ill and was being treated in isolation there, said the pastor of a North Carolina church that sponsored her work.

Dr. Samuel Brisbane, a top Liberian health official, was treating Ebola patients at the country’s largest hospital, the John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center in Monrovia, when he fell ill.

He died Saturday, said Tolbert Nyenswah, an assistant health minister.

The American physician, 33-year-old Dr. Kent Brantly, was in Liberia helping to respond to the outbreak that has killed 129 people nationwide when he fell ill, according to the North Carolina-based medical charity, Samaritan’s Purse.

Investigators said a gun was found near one of the bodies and it appeared no one outside the family was responsible for the shootings.

State police Sgt. Chris Harriman said murder-suicide is one of the scenarios being investigated but that determination will be made by the state medical examiner’s office.

Authorities did not release the names of the family but said the parents were in their 30s and the children were ages 4, 7 and 12.

Neighbors Heather and Dellas Nason stopped to place flowers on the ground outside the apartment building, which was surrounded by crime scene tape. Heather Nason said she used to baby-sit the children.

“I still don’t want to believe it,” she said. “I love those children like they were my own.”

Fighting begins to intensify near MH17 disaster site in the Ukraine

By DMITRY LOVETSKY and PETER LEONARD The Associated Pres DONETSK, Ukraine – Ukrainian armed forces mounted a major onslaught against pro-Russian separatist fighters Sunday in an attempt to gain control over the area where a Malaysia Airlines plane was downed earlier this month.

The U.S. State Department, meanwhile, released satellite images that it says back up its claims that rockets have been fired from Russia into eastern Ukraine and heavy artillery for separatists has also crossed the border.

A four-page document released by the State Department seems to show blast marks from where rockets were launched and craters where they landed. Officials said the images, sourced from the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, show heavy weapons fired between July 21 and Friday – after the July 17 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

Moscow has angrily denied allegations of Russia’s involvement in eastern Ukraine.

Russia’s foreign ministry over the weekend accused the U.S. of conducting “an unrelenting campaign of slander against Russia, ever more relying on open lies.”

Secretary of State John Kerry spoke by phone Sunday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, urging him to stop the flow of heavy weapons and rocket and artillery fire from Russia into Ukraine, said a State Department official. Kerry did not accept Lavrov’s denial that heavy weapons from Russia were contributing to the conflict, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details of the call.

There was no immediate comment from Moscow.

Reports of the intensifying unrest in eastern Ukraine prompted a postponement of a trip to the site by a team of Dutch and Australian police officers who had planned to start searching for evidence and the remaining bodies.

Minister Mark Rutte said his government has rejected the idea of deploying armed troops to secure the crash site because there is no way they could achieve “military superiority” in a region where heavily armed pro-Russian rebels are battling Ukrainian government forces.

“The option we looked at was a military option in which you could secure the area so you can work in a stable environment,” Rutte said. But “that the option would be such a provocation to the separatists that it could destabilize the situation.”

Ukraine’s National Security Council said Sunday that government troops have encircled Horlivka, a key rebel stronghold, and that there had been fighting in other cities in the east.

Horlivka lies around 20 miles north of the main rebel-held city of Donetsk.

The armed forces “have increased assaults on territory held by pro-Russian mercenaries, destroyed checkpoints and positions and moved very close to Horlivka,” the council said in a statement.

A representative of the separatist military command in Donetsk confirmed that there had been fighting in Horlivka, but said that rebel fighters were holding their positions.

Elsewhere, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported Sunday that a column of Ukrainian armored personnel carriers, trucks and tanks had entered the town

of Shakhtarsk, 10 miles west of the site of the Boeing 777 crash.

Shakhtarsk is a strategic town in the area. By controlling the town, the Ukrainian army would cut off vital rebel supply lines.

Local media reported fighting also taking place in the towns of Snizhne and Torez, the two nearest mid-sized towns to the crash site.

The government accused rebel forces of firing rockets Sunday on residential apartment blocks in Horlivka in what they said was an attempt to discredit the army and whip up anti-government sentiment. The separatist self-declared “Donetsk People’s Republic” has accused the army of being responsible for that and other rocket attacks in nearby cities.

The Donetsk regional government – which is loyal to Kiev and based elsewhere since rebels took over the area – said Sunday in a statement that at least 13 people, including two children aged 1 and 5, were killed in fighting in Horlivka. It said another five people were killed as a result of clashes in a suburb north of Donetsk.

New York-based Human Rights Watch last week condemned what it said was the Ukrainian government forces’ practice of using unguided rockets in populated urban areas. It said that use of the rockets was a violation of international humanitarian law that “may amount to war crimes.”

Schmuhl School regularly welcomes students to the one room school house for historical activities, songs and games. The historical society even encourages children to dress in clothes typical of the 1930s for the field trip.

Although the process can be very detailed, the historical society is happy to assist. BAGHDAD – Militants from the Islamic State group blew up a mosque and shrine dating back to the 14th century in Mosul on Sunday, local residents said, the latest casualty in a week that has seen a half dozen of the Iraqi city’s most revered holy places destroyed.

Mosul residents said the Prophet Jirjis Mosque and Shrine was bombed and destroyed by the radical jihadist group. They spoke anonymously to The Associated Press for fear of reprisal.

The complex was built over the Quraysh cemetery in Mosul in the late 14th century, and included a small shrine dedicated to Nabi Jerjis, the Prophet George.

The al-Qaida breakaway Islamic State group captured large swaths of land in western and northern Iraq, including Mosul, Iraq’s second larg-

est city, which was captured in June. The group has imposed a self-styled caliphate in territory they control in Iraq and Syria, imposing their harsh interpretation of Islamic law.

Among the mosques destroyed in Mosul last week were the Mosque of the Prophet Sheeth (Seth) and the Mosque of the Prophet Younis, or Jonah, said to be the burial place of the Prophet Jonah, who in stories from both the Bible and Quran is swallowed by a whale. The militants claim that such mosques have become places for apostasy, not prayer.

Since the Islamic State launched their blitz across Iraq, more than a million people have fled their homes, according to the United Nations.

Many of those people have escaped to the semi-autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq since it has remained relatively stable since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Israel and Hamas launched new attacks Sunday in the raging Gaza war, despite going back and forth over proposals for a temporary halt to nearly three weeks of fighting ahead of a major Muslim holiday.

The failure to reach even a brief humanitarian lull in the fighting illustrated the difficulties in securing a more permanent truce as the sides remain far apart on their terms.

After initially rejecting an Israeli offer Saturday for a 24-hour truce, Hamas said Sunday it had agreed to hold fire ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. But as Israel’s Cabinet met to discuss the offer and the ongoing war, rockets rained down on southern Israel and Israeli strikes could be heard in Gaza.

Each side blamed the other for scuttling the efforts.

Hamas said that “due to the lack of commitment” by Israel, it resumed its fire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hamas showed it could not be trusted after it violated other ceasefire efforts.

“Israel is not obliged and is not going to let a terrorist organization decide when it’s convenient to fire at our cities, at our people, and when it’s not,” Netanyahu said in satellite interviews from Israel carried on U.S. network Sunday news programs.

In a phone call later Sunday, President Barack Obama told Netanyahu the United States is growing more concerned about the rising Palestinian death toll and the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza.

The White House said Obama reiterated that Israel has a right to defend itself and condemned Hamas rocket attacks that have killed Israelis,

Engagement key with international conflicts With the horrific shooting down of a commercial airliner over Ukraine and fighting that has now escalated to a ground war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, it would be easy for most U.S. citizens to throw up their hands and turn their backs.

But now would be the worst time to do that.

We are increasingly impacted by a world that is increasingly interdependent mostly through trade and the world economy.

Never before have major institutions like banks and manufacturing, and even basic industries like agriculture and food production, been so interconnected.

So there is risk to our economy and the livelihood of our citizens by taking an isolationist view in world where

interdependence is growing.

Increasingly, though, there are elements of evil in many countries who seem to be also more connected and growing in strength. Communication technology and the Internet allows these associations to grow.

The growth of tyranny by despot governments creates pockets of unrest that grow into cities of instability.

We can debate the age-old question of whether the U.S. should serve as the world’s policeman. But that anecdote is outdated, suggesting we can somehow enforce laws in a sometimes lawless world. Our role might be more in coordinating with our allies economic sanctions for countries that would otherwise not consider the cost of evil.

We have some examples of

where this is working. Recent events have certainly suggested Russia and Vladimir Putin have not been thwarted by economic sanctions. But diplomatic experts have said the sanctions were essentially working with Putin backing off. The recent attack on the airliner could very well have been separatists acting independently from any Putin directive.

We’ve also had some success with diplomacy in disarming Syria of its chemical weapons.

Now is not the time to withdraw from these international events that grow more serious every day. As they do, the interdependent world we live in can also put American interests and people at risk should we choose to do nothing.

Dying in the digital age means leaving two worlds instead of one.

One is the physical world, where your body resides.

The other is the online world, where your virtual self exists.

When you die, your loved ones become responsible for both – yet they have very few tools to take proper care of the online “you.”

This is a growing problem nationally, as older citizens become more Internet-savvy and people of all ages conduct more of their personal and financial business online. State lawmakers should be prepared to tackle this issue in 2015, with help from privacy advocates and estate attorneys: Our laws are ill-equipped to deal with the tricky reality of gaining access to others’ Facebook accounts, family photos stored in the cloud, and even password-protected phones.

Last week, a leading group of lawyers recommended that states adopt several proposals to make it easier for surviving family members and executors of estates to gain access to your digital assets when you die. This group, known as the Uniform Law Commission, said electronic documents should be treated much like paper documents in a file cabinet. In most cases, a surviving loved one or executor should get easy access without having to petition a judge or jump through months of hoops.

Digital privacy is emerging as a hot topic for the 2015 legislative session, and dealing with the digital assets of a deceased person is likely to be part of the mix.

Descendants may find themselves debating surreal questions such as: How can we keep a virtual self out of legal purgatory? How should we define a good digital death?

Nick Dalesandro and his Joliet Catholic baseball teammates had not been born yet when Bugs Bunny was in his heyday, and they most likely never heard of Bert Campaneris.

Those two came to mind, however, as Dalesandro did it all for the Hilltoppers during last week’s run to the Phil Lawler Classic summer baseball tournament title at Benedictine University.

If you are old enough, you may recall the Bugs Bunny cartoon where he was the entire baseball team. He was quick enough to play every position on the field simultaneously.

Campaneris, meanwhile, played all nine positions an inning each for the Kansas City Athletics in a game in September 1965. He was more than acceptable everywhere he went, including on the mound and behind the plate.

That brings us to Dalesandro, a senior and the Lawler Classic MVP. Between the spring and summer seasons, we saw him cover the ground and then some in center field, where his throwing arm also was a weapon.

We saw him play third base, where he made difficult pickups of ground balls look routine, and second base, where his arm allowed him to throw out a runner attempting to score from third on a ball hit over the mound. Normal second basemen would not have attempted that throw.

As a catcher, he blocked everything and shut down the opponents’ running game.

Again, there’s that arm.

He pitched effectively. He won the Lockport Regional title game over Sandburg and the state championship game over Nazareth after picking up the win in relief in a 1-0, nine-inning win over Prairie Ridge in the opener of the state tournament.

“Nick was really good tonight. He showed a lot of maturity,” JCA coach Jared Voss said after the 3-1 championship win over Nazareth. “Sometimes he tries to strike every

Dalesandro, who lost the summer state final to Lyons in 2012 and beat Wheaton St. Francis in the Class 3A title game in 2013, threw 77 pitches in the seven innings. He had a one-hitter going until the Roadrunners got to him in the seventh, but he gutted it out and finished the deal. A radar gun had the fastball he threw to the final hitter at 92 mph.

“I was on a pitch count, and I was about there,” Dalesandro said. “It was maybe 75 or 80.

But I wanted to finish.”

He also took charge on an infield popup on the first-base line and about 20 feet from home plate, which a pitcher normally does not do, had two hits and ran the bases hard.

That’s the only way he knows, but it’s not always something coaches want their star pitchers doing.

Whatever Dalesandro does on a baseball diamond, you notice him.

“Nick is one kid who no matter what position you put him at, he is the best at that

position,” Voss said. “I’ve had kids who were the best at their positions like [current minor leaguers] Joe Benson and John Ruettiger, but Nick is the best everywhere.

“They wanted us to fill out rosters for this tournament, and where it said position, I told the coaches we should just mark ATH [athlete] for him.

That’s what he is.”

Dalesandro will play his college baseball at Purdue, if that’s the route he decides to take.

The Boilermakers recruited him as a catcher.

Wherever he plays for the Hilltoppers in the spring, rest assured pro scouts will be watching. Don’t be surprised if he is a high draft pick. Will it be as a catcher, pitcher or outfielder? Stay turned.

In 2016, JCA will have another kid who could go high in the draft, junior right-hander Drake Fellows, who already is committed to Vanderbilt.

Unlike his good friend Dalesandro, Fellows knows what his collegiate and professional position will be, and that’s on the mound.

However, JCA fans learned this summer Fellows also is dangerous with the bat. He hit fourth, right behind Dalesandro, and had the game-winning hits in both the semifinal and final. His game-winner in the 3-2 semifinal victory over Prospect was a seventh-inning walkoff.

Voss pointed out the summer championship could be a springboard to the 2015 spring season for the Hilltoppers.

The big names – Dalesandro, Fellows and Iowa-bound shortstop Mitch Boe among them – stepped up when the chips were down. But JCA completed an unbeaten summer run, a first

in the tournament’s 39-year history, thanks to everyone on the roster.

After all, it’s summer. It’s the time of year when you often do not have many of your top players because they are off playing with their travel teams, attending showcases, participating in other sports or perhaps nursing injuries.

“This is a testament to all the kids in our program, but we need to keep everything in perspective,” Voss said. “A state championship in the spring is the big goal.”

Cabral captures heavyweight title by TKO at Hollywood Casino Joliet

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For those who were looking for a lot of flair and dramatics in the title bouts of the Summer Fights Series II at Hollywood Casino Joliet, they likely walked away disappointed.

That’s because two of the three Mixed Martial Arts matches in which Supreme Promotions belts were being contested Saturday turned into strategic battles where competitors put matters into the judges hands after trying to minimize their opponent’s strengths.

As a result, both the welterweight and lightweight belts were decided in a split decision while the only bout that didn’t go the five-round, 15-minute distance was the heavyweight clash, which was over within about half a minute.

Plainfield’s Josh Streacker defended his welterweight title in a split decision over Sinatra Pool in the main event of the extensive card, which lasted almost six hours and drew the organization’s largest crowd yet.

Lemont’s Angel Cabral made short work of Dean Neely, winning the heavyweight belt by technical knockout in just 32 seconds in the next-to-last championship fray.

And in the first of the three clashes, LaQuinn Swift used his wrestling skills to help him defeat “Flyin’” Brian Akins in a split decision with the lightweight belt on the line.

Streacker, a Bolingbrook and Lewis University graduate, won on two judges’ cards by 48-47 scores while Pool won by that same tally according to the other judge.

Pool seemed to have the upper hand in the first and third rounds, including taking Streacker down to the mat and then controlling him for awhile in the third period.

“I expected to finish him and I didn’t do that, so I’m kind of disappointed with the fight,” Streacker said.

“But he came out there with a great game plan and had the best of intentions to mess with my style. It was impressive on his part and it was a war.

“He got the first round, I got the second after rocking him with a head kick and he

won the third after putting me on my back. I got the fourth round so I knew it came down to the fifth round and I wasn’t losing this fight. So I put the pressure on him and that’s what decided it.

“He tried to put me up against the wall and make it into a battle. Fortunately, I stay calm and don’t freak out and try to explode when the time comes. Every time you go into the cage it’s a learning experience and that’s what I want so that I can be better in the future.”

Unlike the lower weight championships, there was no drama when the big men met for the heavyweight belt.

Cabral came out with a flurry and had ‘Big Neely Daddy’ reeling after landing a wellplaced kick, forcing the official to wave things off not too long after the bout began.

The opening championship match, for the lightweight belt, was another struggle that went the distance before the trio of judges at cage-side had to determine the winner.

Swift was able to take

Akins down to the mat in the first, fourth and fifth rounds and then largely kept him wrapped up throughout those periods.

Akins had better chances to get off some of his kicks during the second and third rounds, but the veteran Swift was able to keep him at bay by thwarting most of those attempts.

It was announced that a third series of fights for Jim Jackson’s Supreme Promotions will likely be Aug. 23, once again at the casino.

– The Joliet Slammers’ game Sunday at Traverse City was postponed because of afternoon thunderstorms.

The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Monday.

On Saturday night, the Slammers salvaged the third and final game of their series at Windy City with a 16-5 victory.

G r a n t D e B r u i n finished with Grant DeBruin four hits with three doubles and six RBIs. He has a commanding league lead in hits with 87. His .366 average is second in the Frontier League to Windy City’s Kyle Robinson’s .369.

DeBruin has 19 doubles, two behind Robinson’s league-leading 21. He also has a nine-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 32 of his past 35.

CHANNAHON – The great equalizer in baseball is an ace pitcher.

Channahon 12-year-old Bronto team found that out in the semifnals of the Bronco North Zone Tournament on Sunday, when they ran into Kankakee’s Tyler Hiller.

Hiller kept the normally potent Channahon offense at bay just long enough to let Kankakee squeak out a 4-3 win. He allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out 12 and retired the first 10 batters he faced.

“We knew we would be facing [Hiller],” Channahon coach Jason Bisbee said.

“He’s probably the best pitcher here. I don’t think I have seen him give up a run until today.”

Kankakee, meanwhile, staked Hiller to a 1-0 lead in the first when leadoff batter Owen Jackson walked, stole second and third and scored on a groundout.

Channahon pitcher Jared Butts matched Hiller pitch for pitch after that and did not allow his first hit until the fourth inning. Butts threw five innings, allowing one hit and three walks

By JOHN KEKIS The Associated Press COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – Frank Thomas choked back tears, Joe Torre apologized for leaving people out of his speech and Tony La Russa said he felt uneasy.

Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame can have those effects, even on the greats.

Thomas, pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and managers Bobby Cox, Torre and La Russa were inducted into the baseball shrine Sunday, and all paid special tribute to their families before an adoring crowd of nearly 50,000.

“I’m speechless. Thanks for having me in your club,” Thomas said, getting emotional as he remembered his late father. “Frank Sr., I know you’re watching. Without you, I know 100 percent I wouldn’t be here in Cooperstown today.

You always preached to me, ‘You can be someone special if you really work at it.’ I took that to heart, Pop.” “Mom, I thank you for all the motherly love and support.

The 46-year old Thomas, the first player elected to the Hall who spent more than half of his time as a designated hitter, batted .301 with 521 home runs and 1,704 RBIs in a 19-year career mostly with the White Sox. He’s the only player in major league history to log seven straight seasons with a .300 average, 20 homers, 100 RBIs and 100 walks.

Ever the diplomat as a manager, Torre somehow managed to assuage the most demanding of owners in George Steinbrenner, maintaining his coolness amid all the Bronx craziness

while keeping all those egos in check after taking over in 1996.

The result: 10 division titles, six AL pennants and four World Series triumphs in 12 years as he helped restore the luster to baseball’s most successful franchise and resurrected his own career after three firings.

Torre, the only man to amass more than 2,000 hits (2,342) and win more than 2,000 games as a manager, was last to speak, and in closing delivered a familiar message.

“If all of us who love baseball and are doing our jobs, then those who get the game from us will be as proud to be

a part of it as we were. And we are. This game is a gift, and I am humbled, very humbled, to accept its greatest honor.”

The day was a reunion of sorts for the city of Atlanta.

Glavine, Maddux and Cox were part of a remarkable run of success by the Braves. They won an unprecedented 14 straight division titles and made 15 playoff appearances, winning the city’s lone major professional sports title.

“I’m truly humbled to stand here before you,” Cox said.

“To Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, and I have to mention the third member of the big three – John Smoltz – I can honestly say I would not be standing here if it weren’t for you guys.”

Smoltz, part of the MLB Network telecast of the event and eligible for induction next year, flashed a smile in return for the compliment.

Glavine was on the mound when the Braves won Game 6 to clinch the 1995 World Series, pitching one-hit ball over eight innings in a 1-0 victory over Cleveland.

And the slender lefty was one of those rare athletes, drafted by the Braves and the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League.

The 48-year-old Maddux went 355-227 with a career ERA of 3.16 in 23 seasons with the Braves, Cubs, Padres and Dodgers and ranks eighth on the career wins list. He won four straight Cy Young Awards in the 1990s and won 15 or more games for 17 straight seasons with his pinpoint control.

“I spent 12 years in Chicago, 11 in Atlanta, and both places are very special,” Maddux said. “Without the experiences in both cities, I would not be standing here today.”

La Russa, who ranks third in career victories as a manager with 2,728, behind only Connie Mack and John McGraw, was chosen manager of the year four times and won 12 division titles, six pennants and three World Series titles in stints with the White Sox, Oakland A’s and St. Louis Cardinals.

La Russa spoke from the heart. There was no written speech.

Collins healthy, ready to go full-speed at making roster

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@chicagofootball.com BOURBONNAIS – Nate Collins had waited patiently for the day to arrive when he felt his surgically repaired left knee was strong enough to allow him to explode off the line of scrimmage and into contact with an offensive lineman.

So as routine as a one-onone pass rush drill might have seemed Sunday morning, to Collins – who tore his ACL in the fifth week of last season against the Saints – the opportunity to test himself represented a big step forward.

Collins blew by reserve lineman Dylan Gandy and then Ryan Groy, hampered neither by the large brace strapped to his knee or by the

obstacle lined up against him.

Collins understands it still is early and that training camp will only become tougher and more strenuous. The soreness will come, giving Collins an indication whether he’s pushing too hard or not.

But Collins knew all along that the day would come when he would have to get back to work. So when that day came Sunday – the Bears’ first day in pads – everything was right in Collins’ football world.

“It just felt good to get out there,” said Collins, who signed a one-year contract in March. “I had a lot of adrenaline running through me and a lot of energy. I’m just happy I got to be out here.”

His excitement aside, Collins understands the work that remains. He finds him-

An experienced reserve, Collins knows what it will take to play himself into the rotation, leaving him little time to worry about how his knee will hold up.

Collins said Sunday he’s not concerned about that, but instead on proving that he is worth keeping around while

competing against rookies who the Bears used draft picks on (Ferguson in the second round, Sutton in the third) to beef up a defensive line that was depleted last season by injuries.

But Collins has been around long enough to know that he can’t control personnel moves, leaving him to do only what he can to make the Bears’ 53-man roster.

“I don’t want to lie and say I’m hungrier – I’m always hungry,” Collins said.

“I have a mentality where the moment you get comfortable, something bad can go wrong or something unexpected can happen. As long as I can to focus on what I can control, everything else will work itself out. I know as long as I come out here and perform my best

every single day, good things will happen.”

If and how much Collins contributes to the defensive line depth is yet to be determined. Coach Marc Trestman said Sunday he needs everyone at the position and that Collins gives the Bears a “high-motor guy that has flown all over the field over the first few days of training camp.”

Now, Collins knows, it’s a matter of getting all the way back.

“I just have to try and train my body that I have to go as hard as I can (like it’s a) game-like situation,” Collins said. “That’s the way that the trainers and team and everyone else knows that if they need to put me in a game, I’ll be ready.”

FANTASTIC LITTLE DOGS Service dogs help local men lead more independent lives

OLIET – Despite being longtime quadriplegics, both Dan Tessiatore, 56, of Joliet and Bill Downs, 67 of Homer Glen, are extremely active and independent.

Tessiatore is a career counselor/instructor at Cornerstone Services in Joliet and Downs owns WS&S Medical in New Lenox. Their independence was greatly enhanced once they received service dogs they received from the nonprofit Canine Companions.

When Tessiatore first considered owning a service dog, he said, he researched many different organizations before deciding upon Canine Companions. Downs said his doctor recommended the organization.

Neither man can imagine life without their respective dogs.

“She picks things off the floor and give them to me,” Tessiatore said. “She turns lights off and on. She can open and close doors; and she can hit the call button on the elevator with her nose.

At work, she retrieves paper from the printer and bring it to me.”

Downs said he recently fell in his garage. Although Garrison, Downs’ 3-year-old black Labrador Retriever, could not pick him up, Garrison could – and did – bark for help and remain

by Downs’ side until help arrived.

“He’s a fantastic little dog,” Downs said.

Eventually, Tessiatore decided less reliance on others was a good thing, especially when no one else was at home. Tessiatore said Canine Companions had a reputation for excellence (“They’re a top notch organization,” he said.), so he finally contacted them and started the several year process.

Tessiatore said he had to provide information on Tessiatore’s reason for a service dog, finances and living arrangements. About two weeks later after he applied, several Canine Companions employees interviewed Tessiatore by phone. He then traveled to the regional facility in Ohio for a tour and was subsequently put on a waiting list.

It took three years for Canine Companions to find

a dog it could train to match Tessiatore’s needs, about twice as long as the organization originally estimated.

Once the appropriate dog was acquired – Renada, a 3-year-old part Labrador Retriever, part Golden Retriever – Tessiatore again traveled to Ohio to participate in some of the training.

Tessiatore especially appreciates that Canine Companions remains involved in the dog’s life, especially in matters of training and overall health. If a dog backslides on any commands – as Renada did several times – Canine Companions works with the handler to fix the problem.

For her safety’s sake, Tessiatore keeps Renada on a leash, unless they both are inside the house or in the enclosed backyard.

“Renada always wags her tail when she does things for me,” Tessiatore said.

Like many dog, Renada will chase a ball in the backyard and frolic with Tessiatore’s friends and their dogs in his backyard.

“The organization said dog parks are not the best places to take her,” Tessiatore said. “There’s a lot of diseases there, I guess.”

Downs, who was injured in the Vietnam War in 1967, lives alone.

After tearing his rotator cuff playing wheelchair sports, owning a service dog became a good idea, he said. Besides retrieving, manipulating light switches

and taking clothes out of the dryer, Garrison is an excellent flying companion when Downs’ business takes him out of town, he said.

The process for acquiring Garrision was similar to the one Tessiatore followed for Renada. Perhaps the highlight for Downs was graduation day, when the volunteer that raised Garrison walked across the stage and presented Downs with his dog.

“How the heck do you spend 10 months with a dog and then give it up? How do you begin thanking people for that?” Downs said. “It was absolutely incredible.

PLAINFIELD – At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, New York Times bestselling author Luis Carlos Montalván will speak at the Plainfield Public Library, 15025 S. Illinois St., Plainfield, in the Large Meeting Room.

Montalván, who wrote the children’s book, “Tuesday Tucks Me In,” based on his memoir, “Until Tuesday,” is a 17-year veteran of the U.S. Army and an award-winning speaker and advocate. The event is free to the public and requires registration ahead of time at the Library.

“Tuesday Tucks Me In,” narrated by Montalván’s service dog, Tuesday, is a story about a day in his life – and what it means to be a service dog. Tuesday’s story is one of a loyal dog who is there for his soldier for anything he needs, whether it be helping him get ready in the morning or reminding him to take his medicine.

Visitors will get a chance to meet Tuesday and see the dog perform a demonstration. Montalván will read a passage from his book, answer questions from the audience and sign copies of his book. Montalván’s books

also will be available for purchase at the event.

In 2012, “Until Tuesday” won the USA Best Book Award in the Autobiography/Memoir and Audiobook nonfiction categories. Montalván also was a finalist for a 2012 APA Audie Award beside nominees Tina Fey and Michael Moore. He is the recipient of a 2011 Voice Award and the 2011 Invisible Hero Honors Award for his efforts to educate the public about trauma and the real experiences of veterans and people with disabilities.

Tuesday is the recipient of the 2013 American Kennel Club, Humane Fund Award for Canine Excellence – Service Dog. Montalván and Tuesday will appear in an independent documentary called “Buried Above Ground,” to be released later this year.

The last time we had dinner together, you could see the hurt and embarrassment on Tom’s face after his father spoke to him. I desperately want to say something to the father, but I don’t know if I should. What would you

And then I would ask him if he wanted me to call his father on it, because watching it happen is painful and prevents you from enjoying the dinner.

Inflammation of sinuses can set the stage for bacterial sinusitis DearDr.K: I’ve had four bouts of “bacterial sinusitis” over the past several months. How can I kick this infection for good?

DearReader: Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses. Sinuses are the moist air spaces behind the eyes, forehead, nose and cheeks, on each side of our head.

Why do we have sinuses? I don’t think anyone knows, and I’m not sure there’s a good reason. They don’t do anything good for us. All they seem to do is cause trouble. In that respect, they’re sort of like our appendix.

What irritates the sinuses and leads to inflammation is most often a viral infection. Sometimes it’s an allergic reaction to things in the air we breathe or to certain foods.

Conditions that block the sinuses, such as polyps in the nose or a badly deviated septum, can do it.

Cigarette smoke also is a common irritant, even second-hand smoke.

Sometimes it’s swimming, particularly when there are substances in the water (such as chlorine) that irritate the lining of the sinuses.

As you know, sinusitis causes pain and pressure, congestion and postnasal drip. Normally, the sinuses drain through small open-

This warm, moist environment serves as an ideal bacterial breeding ground. Bacteria that normally live in your sinuses rapidly multiply, causing an infection: bacterial sinusitis. That adds pus to the mucus. Sputum, the stuff that blows out of your nose or that you cough up from the back of your throat, turns yellow, brown or green. Also, bacterial sinusitis often causes a fever.

Bacterial sinusitis is actually pretty unusual and is over-diagnosed. Unfortunately, it is hard for a doctor to be sure there is a bacterial infection that requires antibiotic treatment. Most doctors will treat with antibiotics if someone has had the symptoms for 10 days or more without improvement. That’s because viral infections usually are improving by that time.

Antibiotic treatment also is

justified if symptoms are severe and persist for three days or more, or if a person has a high fever (over 102 degrees).

A course of antibiotics lasting 10 to 14 days usually can treat bacterial sinusitis. Your doctor can extend that course up to six weeks if needed. But sometimes antibiotics still fail to eliminate the infection, or they provide only temporary relief before symptoms return.

Bacterial sinusitis will return if you don’t reduce the conditions that irritated the sinuses in the first place. So try: • Treating your allergies. If allergies could be a factor, ask your doctor about more effective allergy treatment.

• Eliminating milk and/or wheat from your diet. Allergic reactions to these foods can set the stage for sinusitis.

• Quitting smoking. Cigarette smoking impairs the function of tiny hairs that sweep mucus and debris out of your sinuses.

It won’t work, by the way, but she might have to learn that by trial and error. A grief-support group could be helpful for both of you.
