CHANNAHON – Authorities said a Manhattan man shot up a golf cart before a chase that ended with police officers shooting at him Wednesday.

Luke E. Bertolini, 23, appeared Thursday in Will County video court before Judge Cory Lund on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm and vandalism.

About 2 p.m. Wednesday, Bertolini came into the Big Fish Bar and Grille, 27425 S. Will Road in Wilmington, saying he would fight with employees, according to owner John Mathias. Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said Bertolini arrived at the Harbor Marina in a yellow Monte Carlo driven by his girlfriend, Kadi Craig, 23.

“Surveillance video shows the car arrive in the parking lot and [Bertolini] gets out and walks to the bar while she remains in the vehicle,” Wold said.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Larry Leszcynski told Lund that when Bertolini left the bar, he fired three

rounds into a nearby golf cart – causing more than $300 in damage.

Channahon police were called when the shots were fired and notified other agencies. At 2:25 p.m., a Wilmington police officer spotted the Monte Carlo traveling north, Wold said. When Craig stopped the Monte Carlo at Arsenal Road, Bertolini got out of the passenger door carrying a semi-automatic pistol and Luke E. a revolver, Wold said.

Bertolini “One of the officers fired at [Bertolini], and he jumped over a concrete barrier, falling about 12 feet to the ground,” Wold said. Bertolini was not struck by the officers’ shots.

Wold said the guns are registered to Bertolini’s father, and neither was loaded, but Bertolini had shell casings in his pockets that matched those at the marina.

Leszcynski told Lund detectives believe Bertolini fired shots in the air before the Monte Carlo was stopped by police.

Bertolini was arrested, and the case was assigned to the Will-Grundy Major

Crimes Task Force because of the officer-involved shooting. Shorewood, Will County Sheriff’s and State Police assisted Wilmington and Channahon police during the pursuit, according to Wold.

Craig, of Manhattan, was questioned but released without being charged.

“The video [from the marina] shows she remained in the car at all times. She has cooperated with the investigation and said she was not involved with [Bertolini’s] actions,” Wold said.

Leszcynski said Craig may be called as a witness against Bertolini and asked Lund to keep him from contacting her “for her own protection” if he is able to post his $350,000 bond. Bertolini also will have to submit to drug and alcohol testing before every court date.

“We believe this event is both drugand alcohol-related,” Leszcynski told the judge.

Bertolini, of the 13800 block of West Carriage Lane, has pending misdemeanor DUI and drug possession cases in Will County, according to Lund. He faces up to 18 years in prison if convicted on the felony weapons and vandalism charges.

Joliet seeking $819,000 from two township sanitary districts

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet is seeking $197,000 from the Greenfield Sanitary District but is not sure where to go for payment.

Greenfield is the second sanitary district the city has threatened with litigation for allegedly not paying money owed to Joliet for several years.

Joliet claims it also is owed $622,000 from the South Ridgewood Sanitary District, although a lawyer for the district contends the amount is highly exaggerated. The two sides are negotiating a possible city takeover of that system.

In both cases, the city treats sewage coming from houses in unincorporated areas of Joliet Township and charges for its services. But city officials claim South Ridgewood has not made a payment since 2004 and Greenfield has not paid since 2009.

In the case of the Greenfield Sanitary District, city officials are not sure anyone is running the system or even collecting

bills from all the homeowners in the area.

“We are having difficulty finding any organization or organizing group,” City Manager Jim Hock said. “Who’s in charge is kind of a question that needs to be answered.”

The city has sent letters to homeowners in both sanitary districts.

The Greenfield Sanitary District serves an area of 101 properties – not all of which are occupied – in the area of Rowell Avenue and New Lenox Road, said Joliet Utilities Director James Eggen.

“The principal for the board of that system – the individual passed away about 10 years ago,” Eggen said.

He said it does not appear anyone is officially in charge of the system now, although city officials have been in contact with a family member living at the same address of the deceased Greenfield Sanitary District official.

Meanwhile, both Hock and an attorney for the South Ridgewood Sanitary District said the two sides have been

talking about a possible Joliet takeover of that system.

Attorney Frank Burkey said city meters inflate the amount of sewage coming out of the district. No payments have been made since 2004 because of a long-standing dispute that has been in court previously over how much South Ridgewood should be paying Joliet, he said.

“We’re prepared to give them [city of Joliet] about $155,000 and give them the district,” Burkey said. “They would own a very good system.”

Eggen said the South Ridgewood system was built in the 1980s and should be in good shape. But the city would have to inspect it before deciding whether to take ownership, he said.

Although Burkey said city readings on sewage are inflated, Eggen said South Ridgewood has not inspected flow meters as required in an agreement with Joliet.

“They’ve never done any testing to determine if they’re correct or incorrect,” Eggen said.

Parents debate, discuss as Lincoln-Way school officials consider one school to shutter

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Mary Gorski and Kate Figlewski fear they may lose their schools, their friends – and in some ways, the identity of their community – as Lincoln-Way officials come to grips with closing one of the district’s four academic buildings in an effort to improve its financial situation.

Gorski, a Lincoln-Way North student, and Figlewski, a Lincoln-Way Central student, both are concerned the school board may pick theirs as the one to shutter to reduce a roughly $5.5 million deficit.

Lincoln-Way High School District 210 accumulated the deficit after years of a poor economy and declining state funding following the construction of two new schools to relieve projected increased enrollment.

After considering slashing curriculum and extracurricular activities, as well as a tax increase referendum, the school board settled July 16 on closing one school and may discuss which one at its Aug. 13 meeting.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said if a school were to close, it would be in fall 2016.

Gorski, an incoming Lincoln-Way North junior from Mokena, is in the top 10 of her class and has ambitions to attend the University of Notre Dame.

“I know specific teachers I’m looking to work with my senior year,” she said. “To adjust to a new school your senior year after working three years in one school … you’re basically a freshman all over again and learning your way around a school.”

Figlewski worries about the social impact and her future as a student athlete if Lincoln-Way Central closes.

“It wouldn’t affect me academically, but socially it would because all my friends would be split up, and I would

have trouble being on a sports team because there would be more students,” she said.

In recent weeks, Lincoln-Way parents and residents have formed online groups to either support a school or discuss financial issues as they worry about how a building closure would break bonds between students, disrupt their children’s education and change the identity of their community.

In some cases they have debated which school should close, but many have advocated for less division on a decision that will impact everyone.

If a school closed …

School officials are deciding which of the schools to close: Central or East, opened in 1954 and 1977, respectively; or North, built in 2008; or West, built in 2009.

North parents, citing media reports and rumors from school staff, seem to have publicly expressed the most fear that their school will close.

If North closes, Gorski said, she fears separation from her friends because they all live in several communities North pulls together: Mokena, Tinley Park and Frankfort. Even if they ended up at the same building, she worries the size of classes would cause them to be split up.

Some North parents said they want their children to either continue to attend or have the chance to enter a top-ranking “state-of-the-art” school building. They question if an older school such as Central is current on compliance and

safety codes, while they also worry closing a school would mean overcrowded buildings.

Talks of closing a school have been a distraction for Frankfort resident Elizabeth Burghard’s daughter, who will be a freshman at North.

“It’s all her friends have been talking about. It’s a total distraction for the students. … She doesn’t know what the future holds, and that’s a shame,” Burghard said.

Kate Figlewski’s mom, Lisa, said if Central were to close, commute times would increase for students who live close to the school since they would be bused farther.

Catholic Charities provides free school supplies, health screenings

lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With a new book to read and a backpack filled with school supplies in tow, 11-year-old Paris Romeo said she was more than ready to return to school.

“I like the thought of going back to school,” Paris said.

Paris and her 6-year-old brother, Jayvion Romeo, were among the hundreds of area students who attended Catholic Charities’ 23rd annual Back-to-School Fair on Thursday. The event was available for low-income families in Will County.

The event, held at the Pat Sullivan Recreation Center at the University of St. Francis, offered free school supplies and health screenings, including physicals, immunizations, dental exams, HIV testing and asthma and lead screenings.

But it also offered parents, including Jaclyn Romeo of Joliet, a sense of certainty her children will return to school with the materials they need.

“Now, the worry about [shopping for] a backpack is gone,” Jaclyn Romeo said.

“It’s nice to know my kids are going to start off the school year with a new backpack and everything they need. No one wants to be the kid at school with the same backpack from last year ... because you know how kids are.

“I really appreciate this,” she added, watching as her son, Jayvion, dug through his new red backpack, listing all the new supplies he received.

“I got pencils, a pencil box, glue, folders, a ruler,” Jayvion said.

Variety of services

Event coordinator Marianne Melcher said the event also had service booths, offering resources and other information on nutrition, housing, legal and financial advice.

The completion date has been pushed back because of rain delays, Utilities Director James Eggen said.

“We were shooting for mid-July,” Eggen told the Joliet City Council Public Service Committee this week.

“With all the rain we had in June and so far in July, it’s extraordinarily wet, and that’s why we’ve had delays.”

There also have been five change orders on the project, increasing the original contracted price of $804,000 to the current $988,000. The City Council this week approved the latest change order at $54,000 for contractor P.T. Ferro Construction Co. of Joliet.

Most of the project involves relining two water mains that run between Glenwood Avenue and Jefferson Street. But certain sections of pipe had to replaced because “sharp bends” made relining more difficult and more costly, Eggen told the committee.

“We felt it was more cost-effective to just replace that pipe,” he said. “The drawback on that is it’s more inconve-

nient to the residents.”

The project started in April.

Councilman Jim McFarland, chairman of the Public Services Committee, said he has been hearing from nearby residents about the project.

“I’ve had more phone calls from people on both sides of Essington because they don’t see anyone working,” McFarland said.

Eggen said there have been days when work could not be done because of wet conditions.

Water main relining and replacement has been completed, he said. The mains are being tested. When that is done, road that was dug up for the construction will be repaired before all lanes are open again, he said.

Eggen was reluctant to give a completion date given previous delays, but he said all lanes are expected to be open again in about three weeks.

By JUAN PABLO GARCIA jugarcia@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Meijer is alerting customers who bought diesel fuel from July 16 to Tuesday at the 755 E. Boughton Road location that it may have been contaminated with regular unleaded gasoline, according to a news release from the company.

Records show about 90 customers who pumped diesel into their vehicles from 9 p.m. July 16 to 6 p.m. Tuesday might have been affected by

the contaminated gasoline, according to the news release.

One of the companies Meijer uses to transport fuel to its gas stations accidentally put unleaded gasoline into the diesel fuel tank, which was already more than 50 percent full, according to Meijer spokesman Frank Guglielmi.

However, not every vehicle will be affected or experience complications. The ratio of contamination depends on factors such as the amount of gas bought and

the time of purchase. Diesel fuel is heavier than unleaded gasoline, and the pump pulls from the bottom of the tank, so some of the customers may have gotten fuel that was only diesel or significantly less contaminated, Guglielmi said.

Meijer is attempting to reach customers, but anyone who thinks they may have been affected by the contaminated fuel is asked to contact Meijer at 1-800-543-3704 to arrange a checkup with a mechanic, Guglielmi stated.

Plainfield’s National Night Out, an anti-crime and drug effort to spread awareness throughout neighborhoods, will be held 5:30 to 8 p.m.

downtown Plainfield.

The National Night Out will take place in conjunction with the Plainfield Cruise Night on the same day along Lockport Street.

Two days later ,on Aug. 6, a DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) pool party will be held for students in sixth to ninth grades from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ottawa Street Pool, 23820 W. Ottawa St. The event will include swimming, a DJ

and pizza and soda.

Edward Hospital plans addition to existing south Plainfield site

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Edward South Plainfield Medical Office is proposing to build a 6,250-square-foot addition and passed its first site plan review this week when the village Plan Commission recommended the project.

The plan would add to the existing 22,000 square feet of medical space at 16519 Route 59, according to village documents.

The plan also calls for the elimination of a portion of the existing parking lot on the north side of the property

for the addition. That would result in a loss of 24 spaces, but would be replaced with 60 new spaces on the south side of the lot.

The addition would be used for more physician offices, including primary care and some specialists, Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare Spokesman Keith Hartenberger said.

A landscape plan for the addition includes 33 shade trees, four ornamental trees, six evergreens and 148 shrubs. Those landscape elements will be integrated into the existing landscaping, and are intended to mitigate im-

pact from vehicles using the parking lot.

Plan Commission chairman Jim Sobkoviak said the site plan was approved, 6-0, at Tuesday’s meeting.

“They seemed to have all their ducks in a row,” Sobkoviak said.

The only issue with the plan, Sobkoviak said, was the lack of a photometric plan – a diagram that shows light intensities of the parking lot – provided by Edward Hospital, adding that representatives from Edward Hospital said they would provide the plan before the project goes to the village board for approval.

This procedure is typically performed in your doctor’s office, a hospital, or a surgery center. Local anesthesia is used for pain control. After the procedure, a bandage is applied to control the bleeding; a compression stocking, or separate bandage, is then put on the leg. Work and other normal activities can be resumed in 1 to 2 days. During recovery, wear stockings or bandages as instructed, elevate your legs periodically and try to walk each day. Avoid heavy exercise and hot environments such as whirlpools.

Board member Curt Jebens added that as long as the parents are paying taxes, “I think they should be allowed.”

Board President Jim Satorius said the policy will have to follow all Illinois Elementary Schools Association guidelines. The motion was carried,

and the issue was assigned to the policy committee before the first reading is to take place.

“I’m pleased at the outcome,” Crouch said. “It’s good exposure to diversity. We can all come from different places, and have the same goals.

Plus, it puts kids who are in school and kids who are homeschooled together.”

Erin’s Law

Interim Superintendent Stef Palaniuk said the “big ticket item” of the district is the implementation of Erin’s Law, which is now state-mandated.

According to erinslawillinois.org, Erin’s Law will “educate children in public schools on sexual abuse prevention through age-appropriate curriculum through role plays, discussions, activities and books.”

Palaniuk said Guardian Angel Services of Joliet will conduct the presentations.

“With the statistics demonstrating that one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before the age of 18, I believe it is important to talk to students about it at their developmental level,” he said.

Parent information sessions will take place at the end of September into early October, with student sessions beginning in the middle of October, and will run through November.

Palaniuk said parents can opt out, but the school is required by law to host these sessions.

MINOOKA – Changes are coming to Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 schools.

Starting this fall, students who are home-schooled will be allowed to participate in interscholastic activities without having to attend a particular school.

Until now, the district’s policy has been that “nonpublic school students will not be allowed to participate in any district extracurricular activities, regardless of whether they attend a district school part time.”

In June, former board member and parent Kristan Crouch told the board two of her children who have attended district schools will be home-schooled, and she wants them to have access to sports and after-school activities.

“My husband and I decided that it is best to home-school two of our children due to their needs right now. My seventh-grader has been successful in cross country and track and field for the past two years and wishes to continue; and my fifth-grader, having seen her older siblings play sports, would like to try, too,” Crouch said.

The board typically requires, when creating a new policy, three readings of the proposal before any action can be taken. Board member Doug Martin said if the first reading was at the July meeting, the second in August and third in September, the children wanting to participate in fall sports would be out of luck.

“I’m pleased at the outcome. It’s good exposure to diversity. We can all come from different places, and have the same goals. Plus, it puts kids who are in school and kids who are homeschooled together.”

are given liquor licenses

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Anthony’s Restaurant & Bar can have a beer garden, and two other Joliet-based restaurants can add liquor to their menus, after licenses were approved this week.

Anthony’s is at 3151 Voyager Lane outside of the Louis Joliet Mall.

The restaurant replaced Samy’s Lounge, a bar that had been cited for liquor code violations and at one point had an entertainment permit revoked before closing in 2014.

Councilman Larry Hug, whose District 1 includes the location, commended the op-

eration at Anthony’s, which opened last year.

“They turned around a very troubled property with a really great restaurant by the Louis Joliet Mall,” Hug said Tuesday as he and other council members approved all three liquor licenses.

Liquor licenses also were issued for Blue Ridge Legacy at 1215 N. Broadway and Hamburgerseria at 1015 Essington Road. Both received the Class E licenses issued for restaurants.

Deputy Liquor Commissioner Jim Greenan told the council there were no objections at hearings for the three licenses.

Plainfield becomes second West Nile detection in Will County PLAINFIELD – The West Nile virus has been identified in Plainfield through mosquito samples taken by the Will County Health Department.

The positive samples were collected between July 20 and 22, marking the second confirmed case this year of the West Nile virus in mosquitoes in Will County, according to a health department news re-

The West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease that could produce symptoms anywhere from none at all to flulike symptoms and meningitis, encephalitis or dangerous inflammations of the brain or spinal cord, the news release stated.

make it difficult for athletes to transition to the already-established teams at the other schools.

She said Central is an “intricate part” of the Lincoln-Way school district and New Lenox community since it was built in the 1950s. The school, along with East, was renovated under the referendum that led to the construction of North and West.

It’s the kind of school where students can walk through the hall and see framed photos on the wall of their grandparents when they were students, she said. People stay in the district, Lisa Figlewski said, “because they want their kids to go to Central. … It’s kind of like a legacy thing.”

At past school board meetings, Lincoln-Way East parents have voiced concerns about social bonds breaking with a building closing. They want district officials to keep the junior high school feeder schools together if they draw new boundaries.

Deborah Harvey, an East parent, said if East closes, the students would be uprooted and moved, but she is not concerned that will happen. The high school is in a prominent area and has the largest number of students and capacity.

She said rumors have circulated about one of the newer schools, either North or West, to be chosen for shuttering because of their lower number of students and capacity.

Attempts in the last week to reach Lincoln-Way West parents were unsuccessful.

Online debate, support

In response to the possible school closing, several online groups have cropped up to support Lincoln-Way North, Central, West and the whole school district. It’s there where they discuss financial issues, school pride and other topics.

North parent Ann Jenkins said she feels there are indications North is the building likely to be closed. When Superintendent Tingley presented school closure options for each school, she said “everyone feels like the numbers in the options are skewed” toward North.

“I can’t say their fears are correct or incorrect because we are still a ways out from kind of making a decision as a board on which of those directions we may go,” Board President Kevin Molloy said.

Ronald Sawin, assistant superintendent of business, said the numbers in the options are open to interpretation. Tingley said the options presented at the last board meeting were only examples of school closures for the board and the community to consider.

“This is a board decision,” Tingley said. “The board can direct me to come back with 50 more options if they so choose.

The question right now is: Do we keep the junior highs together, or do we look at drawing boundary lines?”

Jenkins said she doesn’t want people going to the various social media sites and picking fights.

“I can understand why people are passionate about this. I would rather no school would close. It’s a horrible thing,” Jenkins said.

Lisa Figlewski, who participates in the Save Lincoln-Way Central Facebook page, said people try to keep that page calm and neutral. The same rules are in place for the North page.

“It doesn’t do the community very good,” she said about online arguments. “It’s tearing apart the communities that should be working together.”

How to avoid back injuries while participating in summer activities SPONSORED BY

Whether you’re heading out for fun, sports, gardening or chores, it’s important to take precautions to avoid back injuries.

Dr. Chintan Sampat, orthopaedic spinal surgeon on staff at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, in Joliet, sees lots of spinal problems during the summer months.

“People that do a lot of repetitive back and forth motion or twisting, like gymnastics, baseball and golf, are especially prone to back injuries due to the repetitive types of motion,” Sampat said.

Patients also see Sampat for sprains from yard work caused by hauling bags of soil or bending back and forth repetitively.

“I often see cases of back pain,” Sampat said “Somebody will lift a heavy lawnmower or pick up multiple bags of soil rather than ask for help.”

Overdoing it can result in a

sprained muscle, pinched nerve or herniated disc, causing pain, numbness, or tingling in the arm or leg.

“In the leg we call it sciatica; that’s a very common thing that I see,” said Sampat. “Typically treatment is non-surgical - physical therapy, home exercises and medication. If those don’t help we talk about injections or possible surgery, although typically you don’t have to do surgery. We use conservative measures as much as possible.”

Sampat offered advice to prevent back injuries.

“Number one is do regular stretching of the back,” he said.

“Also use good lifting mechanics rather than bending down like a “U” at the waist. It’s much better to bend your legs to pick things off the ground. Keep your core muscles strong in your belly and back. Take breaks. Athletes especially should periodically take a break to stretch the muscles. Also, if you’re taking a long car ride, like on summer vacation, take a break every two or three hours to stretch.”

in recent years and was not on medication.

The medication was not the only inconsistency in the jail-intake papers. One questionnaire said Bland took pills in 2015 in an attempt to kill herself after losing a baby.

A separate form filled out by another jail employee said the suicide attempt occurred in 2014.

Cooper said her sister had a miscarriage in May 2014, but got through it. Cooper also said she was not aware of any suicide attempt.

Asked if her sister could have been getting treatment without relatives knowing, Cooper said the family’s five sisters were “above board” with each other and, if anything, “overshared.”

“If it was happening, I would have known,” she said.

Preliminary results of an independent autopsy arranged by the family showed bruising to deep muscle tissue in Bland’s back, consistent with the officer having his knee there, Cooper said.

She would not say if there were other findings. Full results will not be in for a couple weeks.

A woman who occupied a jail cell next to Bland said the Chicago-area woman was emotional and wept often during her three days in jail.

HEMPSTEAD, Texas – The autopsy of a black woman from Naperville who was found dead in a Texas jail revealed no injuries that would suggest she was killed by someone else, authorities said Thursday.

Waller County prosecutor Warren Diepraam said the autopsy showed 28-year-old Sandra Bland had no defensive injuries on her hands that typically would indicate a struggle.

Some lacerations or abrasions were found on her wrists. Those were consistent with a struggle while being handcuffed. The marks around Bland’s neck were consistent with a suicide by hanging, Diepraam said.

Bland also had about 30 small cuts on her wrist that probably were self-inflicted within the last few weeks, he added.

She was arrested in a traffic stop three days before she was found in her cell on July 13.

Her family and friends dispute the official finding that she killed herself using a noose fashioned from a plastic garbage bag.

Texas Rangers and the FBI are investigating.

Also Thursday, the woman’s sister confirmed Bland had taken prescription medication for seizures in the past.

Booking documents filled out for Bland after her arrest indicate she told staff at the jail she had epilepsy and was taking medication for it. The forms identify the drug as Keppra.

Other forms, however, say she was not taking medication.

Company information on Keppra, which is sold in regular and extended-release forms, says that “antiepileptic drugs, including Keppra and Keppra XR, may cause suicidal thoughts or actions in a very small number of people, about 1 in 500.”

Pyle said she heard no signs of a struggle in the cell.

Preliminary results of the Texas autopsy also showed Bland had marijuana in her system. The drug test results are worth noting because they could be “relevant to her state of mind,” Diepraam said.

Authorities said any contradictions in the jail documents were the result of Bland’s inconsistent answers to jailers’ questions.

Bland’s death comes after nearly a year of heightened national scrutiny of police and their dealings with black suspects, especially those who have been killed by officers or die in police custody. It has resonated on social media, with posts questioning the official account and featuring the hashtags #JusticeForSandy and #WhatHappenedToSandyBland.

Bland’s family has said she was not despondent and was looking forward to starting a new job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M University.

However, Bland posted a video to her Facebook page in March, saying she was suffering from “a little bit of depression as well as PTSD,” or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Cooper said “everyone has peaks and valleys” and the Facebook video might indicate her sister was just having a bad day or a bad few days.

A video of her arrest taken from the officer’s dashcam shows state trooper Brian Encinia drawing a stun gun and threatening Bland when she refuses to follow his orders.

The episode began when the trooper stopped Bland for failing to signal a lane change.

The conversation turned hostile after the officer asked Bland to put out her cigarette and she asked why she can’t smoke in her own car. The trooper then ordered Bland to get out of the vehicle. She refused, and he told her she was under arrest.

“Archie” in 1941, and Moore took over in 1953.

But by 1961, Moore couldn’t ignore the itch to be closer to the mountains of far western Texas, according to his son.

He and his family moved from Long Island, New York, back to his native El Paso that year,

and he later took a break from comics and worked in public relations.

“He always felt that his heart belonged at the foot of the Franklin Mountains,” Moore’s son, Lito Bujanda-Moore, told the newspaper.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Frank Mordica, the Vanderbilt running back who shares the single-best rushing performance in Southeastern Conference history, has died. He was 57.

His nephew told Vanderbilt officials he died Saturday of a heart attack while exercising in his hometown Tallahassee, Florida.

Mordica ran for 321 yards against Air Force on Nov. 18, 1978, setting an SEC record matched only by Darren McFadden at Arkansas against South Carolina in 2007 on 12 more carries.

With 2,632 yards between 1976 and 1979, Mordica was Vanderbilt’s career rushing leader until passed by Zac Stacy in 2012.

Drafted No. 233 overall in 1980 by the New Orleans Saints, Mordica never played because of a knee injury. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy before retiring in 2011.

He is survived by his son, Frank III.

EL PASO, Texas – Tom Moore, the “Archie” cartoonist who brought to life the escapades of a freckled-face, redhaired character, has died in Texas. He was 86.

Moore, who began drawing cartoons while in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, died early Monday morning while in hospice care in his hometown of El Paso, his son, Lito Bujanda-Moore, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. He said his father was diagnosed with throat cancer within the past week and chose not to undergo treatment.

Moore drew Archie Andrews and his friends on and off from 1953 until he retired in the late 1980s. Annual sales of the comic regularly surpassed half a million during the 1960s, according to the El Paso Times.

“I did one comic book a month,” Moore told the newspaper in 1996. “I did everything.

We always worked six months ahead. I’d be doing Christmas issues in June and beach stories with a foot of snow outside my window.”

After the war, Moore used funding available through the GI Bill to attend a school in New York for cartoonists. He studied under “Tarzan” comic strip illustrator Burne Hogarth.

“Tom was very funny and had a knack for putting together really great, hilarious gags and special pages when he worked at Archie,” Gorelick said. “He was probably best known here for inking our ‘Jughead’ relaunch decades ago. We’re all sad to hear this news and wish his family the very best during this time.”

After retiring, Moore kept tabs on Archie – and disagreed when the comic book company decided to kill off the character.

The El Paso Museum of Art displayed some of Moore’s work and his vast comic collection about 20 years ago.

“I have enjoyed what I’ve done, and I am pleased that others liked it, too,” Moore said at the time. “I think it’s such a kick that my stuff is going to be hanging at the museum. Who knew Archie would have such universal appeal?”

Along with his son, Moore and his wife of 63 years, Ruth, also raised a daughter, Holly Mathew.

Bujanda-Moore said there will be a celebration of his father’s life in coming weeks.

PEORIA – Caterpillar said it’s looking to manage costs as ongoing economic weakness in countries like China and Brazil and soft commodity prices pressure sales. While second-quarter profit topped Wall Street expectations, revenue fell short, and the construction equipment company cut its revenue forecast for the year.

The stock dropped more than 3 percent before the market opened Thursday.

Caterpillar earned $710 million, or $1.16 a share, for the three months ended June 30. A year earlier it earned $999 million, or $1.57 a share.

Earnings, adjusted for restructuring costs, were $1.27 per share, which was 2 cents better than expectations, according to a survey by Zacks Investment Research.

Revenue was $12.32 billion, shy of the $12.84 billion analysts were looking for.

Caterpillar now foresees revenue of about $49 billion, a billion less that previous guidance. The company maintained its outlook for full-year adjusted earnings of $5 a share.

Analysts polled by FactSet forecast earnings of $4.97 a share on revenue of $49.47 billion.

U of Illinois trustees approve deal for new medical school

CHICAGO – University of Illinois trustees have agreed to a deal to finalize the structure of and financial arrangements for a new medical school in Urbana.

Judge dismisses Northern Illinois University civil suit

DeKALB – A federal judge has ruled that the civil rights of a former Northern Illinois University police officer accused of raping a student weren’t violated by three other officers whom he accused of mishandling evidence in the case.

Andrew Rifkin, 27, said the university withheld transcripts of interviews with witnesses who said the relationship between him and the alleged victim was consensual. But on Tuesday, Federal District Judge Phillip Reinhard dismissed Rifkin’s civil lawsuit against former NIU Chief of Police Donald Grady and NIU investigators Kartik Ramakrishnan and Jason John, saying the evidence had been disclosed and could be used in the upcoming criminal trial.

In February 2013, Grady was fired after the allegations against Rifkin. Grady previously was lauded for his handling of the Feb. 14, 2008, shootings on the school’s campus.

Grady’s attorney, Michael Fox, told The DeKalb Daily Chronicle he’s pleased the lawsuit was dismissed but it might not be enough to restore his client’s reputation.

Rifkin is charged with sexually assaulting a Northern Illinois University freshman at his Cortland apartment in October 2011.

He has pleaded not guilty.

By JILL COLVIN and SETH ROBBINS The Associated Press LAREDO, Texas – Ever sure of himself, Donald Trump paid a whirlwind visit to the Mexico border Thursday and predicted Hispanics would love him – “they already do” – because as president he’d grab jobs back from overseas and give more opportunity to those who live in the U.S. legally.

“There’s great danger with the illegals,” the Republican presidential contender told reporters. But he claimed a “great relationship” with Hispanics, even as Latino leaders have come at him with blistering criticism for his painting Mexican immigrants as criminals.

“I’ll take jobs back from China, I’ll take jobs back from Japan,” Trump said. “The Hispanics are going to get those jobs, and they’re going to love Trump.”

The in-and-out border visit came as Trump continued to dominate attention in the GOP presidential race, to the growing exasperation of his rivals. Campaigning in Gorham, New Hampshire, Jeb Bush offered a distinctly different message in the immigration debate – and spoke partly in Spanish.

“A Republican will never be elected president of the United States again unless we campaign like this,” Bush said, gesturing with open arms.

union members backed out because they were “petrified and they’re afraid of saying what’s happening” at the border. Dozens of people were on hand, a mix of protesters and supporters.

Some chanted “fuera,” telling him to get out; a supporter waved a sign, “no era insulto,” meaning his remarks about immigrants that touched off a feud with Republican rivals were not an insult.

Trump’s visit ended with a bizarre appearance in front of several dozen law enforcement officers, including some from U.S. Border Patrol. He left after less than four minutes after losing patience with a reporter’s question.

On his claim about repatriating jobs, Trump has offered few specifics on the economic policies he would pursue if elected president. In his announcement speech last month, he called for rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure and renegotiating foreign trade deals but did not say how he would seek to recast those agreements.

In recent years, he’s called for a hefty tax on imports, criticized North American and South Korean trade deals and said Ford should be penalized for expanding operations in Mexico.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Reeder doesn’t understand teaching

To the Editor: It’s pretty clear to me Scott Reeder knows little about teachers, teacher contracts and the profession in general. Education is a profession where teachers have different skills according to their subject specialties.

The fact that math and science teaching majors might find higher pay in the private sector should be irrelevant. If one goes into education for the money, then you’ve chosen the wrong profession, and teaching will be better off without you. Every teacher knows those facts, because the reason they chose teaching probably has more to do with the children than money.

Teacher unions are obligated to negotiate and protect all of the teachers in their unit, regardless of their “demand” in the private sector. The fact that teachers in a bargaining unit, with the same education level and experience, are paid the same is absolutely fair.

It has been my experience some of the hardest-working and most underpaid teachers are elementary school teachers.

They, by many measures, may be the most valuable of all teachers, since they set the foundation for their students’ future educational success.

On Reeder’s value scale, they probably would rate very low, since the demand for them in the private sector would be minimal.

What is not fair is what some of our governor’s new hires are getting paid. This is the same governor who wants to cut aid for the poor and handicapped, and preaches austerity. All this while giving a $100,000 salary to his wife’s secretary, and provides a bonus to the newly hired superintendent of schools for the state, because by law that position is a Tier II employee. That salary and

pension were deemed too low for such a lofty position. Take that other Tier II employees!

This is for a man who never has taught a class in his life. Is that fair, Scott?

To the Editor: Engineeringwise, it may be a near Nobel for celestial mechanics, communication and instrumentation if they offered one, superseded by Galileo to Jupiter and Cassini to Saturn but scientifically not that remarkable, mostly more Kuiper belt phenomenon with possibly some gravitational heating and smoothing of Pluto’s surface from orbiting moons or other objects.

Well, we visited a lifeless round rock in the frozen far outer reaches of the solar system for a day or so and zoomed out into nowhere at a cost of about $700 million. What new science or practical value accrues remains to be seen. Some scientist may state we’ve learned about Earth weather by seeing frozen gases on Pluto or plate tectonics by observing Pluto for a day or so, but the connection between a distant frozen rock and the Earth is extremely remote, to say the least.

Nice to say we’ve been there at a cost of a few million dollars, like visiting all seven continents.

Some starry-eyed astronauts probably from California or Pasadena may be making plans to reside there permanently now.

We’ve visited a comet that circulates out there and an asteroid in addition to the meteors that fall to Earth and are a source of better and cheaper science.

No fishing at the North Pole Fishing at the North Pole might seem ludicrous to a world raised on the notion of the top of the world as a deep-frozen wasteland, but at the rate the Arctic Ocean is melting, it may not be long before fishing trawlers can operate in waters that have been inaccessible for more than 800,000 years.

So it was a good idea for the five nations that have territorial claims around the Arctic Ocean – the U.S., Canada, Russia, Norway and Denmark – to put a “No Fishing” sign on the high seas portion of the central Arctic until full scientific studies have been conducted.

The declaration to prevent unregulated fishing in the central Arctic acknowledged that fishing beyond the 200-mile exclusive economic zone of the coastal

states is not likely to start in the near future. But it is not too early to take precautions: The annual “State of the Climate” report by the American Meteorological Society disclosed the highest average sea surface temperatures on record last year, with especially high temperatures in the northern Pacific.

It’s a good idea, too, because the agreement by the five nations provides a template for the kind of cooperation that is critical as the melting ice opens vast new commercial possibilities, including shipping lanes and access to deposits of oil, gas and minerals.

The fishing moratorium does not prevent the five nations from fishing in their own territorial waters (the U.S. has banned commercial fishing in its exclusive

economic zone off Alaska’s North Slope since 2009), nor is it binding on other countries, Asian or European, that are watching the great northern thaw with interest.

But the declaration explicitly invites other countries to join in the process of developing fishing regulations when commercial fishing becomes possible in the central Arctic Ocean.

The U.S., which holds the rotating chairmanship of the Arctic Council, the eight-nation group that is supposed to promote cooperation around the top of the world, has made protection of the Arctic from the consequences of climate change a top priority. Given the rapid changes in that region, the fishing ban hasn’t come too soon.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

No Mercy/D’Arcy Motors routs rival Team claims 6th straight Women’s division championship at Joliet Park District event

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmediacom JOLIET – A couple truths about this slow-pitch softball game.

First, you never know about momentum. Two teams can be fairly evenly matched, yet their anticipated showdown sometimes is a blowout from the get-go.

Second, whenever No Mercy/D’Arcy Motors is involved with a championship on the line, it is likely no mercy will be shown.

No Mercy/D’Arcy Motors ended the Women’s title game of the Joliet Park District City Tournament as quickly as possible Wednesday night, beating rival Insanity Softball, 150, in a 2½-inning game that fell under the three-inning, 15-run slaughter rule. That marked the sixth consecutive city crown for No Mercy.

The Women’s matchup began the parade of championship games. The Mixed Competitive and Mixed Rec divisions had their titles decided Thursday night, and the Men’s Open, Men’s Competitive, Men’s Rec D and Men’s Rec E divisions all will finish Friday night.

Signs pointed to a tight battle between two rivals in the Women’s final. Insanity beat previously unbeaten No Mercy last year to force an “if necessary” game that No Mercy won.

“We had to double-dip last year, and didn’t want to have to do that again,” No Mercy/D’Arcy Motors coach Tracy Nosal said. “We took batting practice before we came out here tonight. Obviously, it worked.”

The two teams are tied for the lead in their league. Nosal said her team won the first meeting between the two, 2517, and Insanity came back and won the second, 17-15.

“This tournament was kind of our tiebreaker,” Nosal said.

No Mercy beat Insanity, 144, Monday in the second round of the city tourney. So Insanity, which beat Twisted Sisterz,

“They’re a good team,” No Mercy/D’Arcy’s Amy Saelens said of Insanity. “Both teams were really up and ready to

play. We just played awesome.

Hitting is contagious, both good and bad, and we got off to a hot beginning.”

“Obviously, we did something right,” said No Mercy/D’Arcy pitcher and cleanup hitter Tristen Wittke,

Nosal’s sister. “Our defense backed me up 110 percent.

Usually, we have a great game with them. We wanted to shut them out. We wanted to redeem ourselves for losing to them a few weeks ago.”

The only hit off Wittke was Kellie Edwards’ second-inning single. Insanity leadoff hitter Heather Richter reached on an error, and that was it for baserunners against Wittke.

Meanwhile, No Mercy/D’Arcy scored five runs on five hits in the first inning and 10 runs on seven hits, a walk and three errors in the second.

Melissa Gunderson doubled and ripped a three-run triple to lead the attack. Dani Reilly doubled twice and drove in a run. Debra Peterson slugged a two-run homer. Amy Schultz and Trish Loverde had two singles. Wittke tripled home a run. Tracy Kwasny doubled in two, and Erin Galloway singled in a pair.

Nosal, Wittke, Saelens and Kwasny are among those who have been together for most or all of the six-year title run.

“All six championship teams have been really good, and this current team is very solid,” said Saelens, the varsity assistant softball coach at Minooka. “We’re continuing to get better.

“I’m the oldest or tied for the oldest on the team.

We need to keep bringing in younger women. They bring energy, but us older ones still bring some energy, too.”

That’s not the only reason, of course, but ever since we have had a great relationship.

That has continued during his tenure with the Joliet Township high schools.

Olson left Plainfield Central after four years to become the Joliet Township district athletic director in 2004. He held that position until this week, when he was approved as the district’s new human resource director.

“I had interest in the position and talked to Cheryl [McCarthy, the district superintendent] about it,” Olson said. “That spurred a lot of discussion among the three of us [including Ilandus Hampton, Olson’s boss and the assistant supervisor for business services]. It was a collaborative effort.

“We discussed whether

VIEWS Dick Goss this might be the right time to dissolve the district AD position. I just had to make sure what I have been doing in the district was covered. It was. With my interest in the [human resource] position, it was like a perfect storm.”

With Steve Locke at Joliet Central and Mike Millsaps at Joliet West, the district has two solid athletic directors in place. In addition, assistant athletic director positions at each campus, which have not been posted for years, will be filled, according to McCarthy’s statement on the district web site.

The athletic programs will be in good shape. I’ll miss dealing with Olson on a somewhat regular basis, but as he said, he will be around.

“I felt this was a natural move,” he said. “The thing that intrigued me is that as an AD, I handled clerical things, security, transportation. We dealt with all aspects of it. I am really excited to work every day in my new position.”

Olson’s memories of Joliet Township athletics are many, the list topped, not surprisingly, by the return to separate programs at the two schools in the 2010-2011 school year.

“The biggest thing is the splitting of the two programs,” he said. “That created so many opportunities for so many more kids. That’s the big thing to me, along with the upgrading of our facilities.

“My memories of the coaches, the kids, that super sectional trip for the basketball team, those are fond memories. And one thing that was big to me was celebrating our kids winning two bass fishing sectionals and taking eighth in the state once. A little thing like that can go a long way.

I’m going to miss it.”

Olson said there is nothing he disliked about being the district athletic director. An aspect of the job he will miss is working as closely as he did with Glen Marcum and the Joliet Township Athletic Booster Club. Marcum and Olson have co-chaired the annual Night of Champions banquet, always a highlight for JT athletics.

“That booster club is something I am proud of,” Olson said. “Giving up my relationship with them tore me up a little.

“But, that doesn’t mean I can’t still be a booster club member.”

When you attend West and Central athletic events in the future, I have feeling you sometimes will see Olson there. The Tigers and Steelmen, dare we say it, even rank above the Marcos.

Belmont Junior Little League blitzes foes en route to state berth

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Belmont Junior Little League All-Stars manager Matt Munoz said his team usually takes a couple of innings to get into the flow of a game.

But once the kids flip the switch, watch out.

The Belmont 13-14-yearolds won the district tournament they hosted with a 3-0 record and then captured the Section II tournament at Burbank, which ended Monday, with a 4-0 mark. The formula throughout has been strikingly similar.

“They’ve wound up being one-sided games so far,” Munoz said. “A six-run difference was our closest game. But every game has been tight for a while. We go into a game kind of timid, then after a couple innings, it all snaps in. The kids get more comfortable.”

Munoz said his team has

some explosive bats, but a huge part of the offensive game continues to be baserunning.

“We play a lot of small ball even though we do hit some home runs,” he said. “We have speed. What’s nice is that when we get the big leads later in games, that takes a lot of the pressure off me.”

Largely because of pitch counts in Junior Little League, coaches must be careful how they use their pitching staffs.

“You get to 75 pitches and you have to have four days of rest,” Munoz said. “So a kid who throws 75 is done for the tournament. It can be tough to decide how much to pitch a kid. It gets interesting.”

Munoz’s ace is Jared King, who also plays third base and shortstop. Jalen Green is the No. 2 pitcher and also a shortstop and third baseman. Tino Acosta and Aaron Hernandez complete the top four pitchers.

Both can play first base and third base.

“The whole rest of our team pitches, too, if we need them,” Munoz said. “They have pitched all season.”

If Belmont goes deeper than four pitchers, Juan Gonzales, Carlos Lopez and Jordan Moats are the most likely to step on the mound. Gonzales also catches and plays left field, Lopez is a middle infielder, and Moats plays first base and third base.

The rest of the team members are Joey Mojica, Oswaldo Lopez, Sebastian Pantoja and Duvall Bailey. All are capable of playing multiple positions.

Jaime Moats, Paul Munoz and Ray Hill are assistant coaches, and Belmont president Candy King, the team mom, also serves as an assistant.

When I was just getting to know Chris Olson, we realized we had some common ground.

Among my beats way back in the early 1980s, when I worked for the State Journal-Register in Springfield, was covering high school basketball on a statewide basis.

One day, I thought I’d try something different for a column. I researched the nicknames of schools around the state, which were the most popular, the most unique, Chris Olson etc. There definitely were some good ones out there, but one stood out above the rest.

My favorite was the Polo Marcos.

Olson, 49, is from Polo, and proud of it. After he became athletic director at Plainfield Central, as we were getting to know each other, he was happy to tell me he had saved

Channahon Broncos push to early lead in tourney

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Any baseball team doesn’t want to fall behind early, especially in a tournament game.

That didn’t seem to bother the Channahon Bronco team Thursday as they fell behind a team from Dubuque, Iowa, in the first inning of a quarterfinal game in the Bronco Region Tournament.

Dubuque grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Michael Garrett singled, then stole second. He stole third and, when the throw went into left field, came home with the game’s first run.

Channahon, however, didn’t waste any time striking back, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first in a game that it led, 14-6, heading into the seventh inning at press time.

Channahon’s Brendan Bisbee led off with a single to center in the bottom of the first, then stole second. He went to third an out later on an infield single by Nick Gomoll. Gomoll stole second, then both runners scored on a single to center by Alex Zawacki.

A walk to Jake Mayfield and an infield single by Matthew Fisher loaded the bases for Channahon.

An out later, with Dalton Pickett at bat, a wild pitch scored Zawacki and Pickett walked to reload the bases.

Donnie Sonnenberg followed with a single to right that scored Mayfield and Fisher to make it 5-1. Bisbee then singled for his second hit of the inning, scoring Pickett and Sonnenberg to make it 7-1.

Pickett then retired Dubuque in order in the top of the second to bring Channahon back to the plate.

They kept the offense going in the second. With one out.

The right-hander allowed four hits, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. His offense provided him with plenty of help. Melky Cabrera homered from both sides of the plate while Alexei Ramirez and Adam Eaton also hit home runs, helping the Sox break a four-game losing streak.

The trade talk certainly hasn’t affected Samardzija’s performance. He has lasted at least seven innings in nine straight starts and has allowed six earned runs in 31⅔ innings in his last four. Samardzija

was traded from the Cubs to Oakland at last season’s deadline, and the Sox acquired him from the Athletics in December.

“With the Cubs, it was a long process,” he said. “There was a lot of speculation for about a year. That was tough.

After you’ve done it a couple of times, you realize it is out of your hands and you just go out there and do your job.”

“There’s a lot to like,” Indians manager Terry Francona said of Samardzija. “What stands out is his competitiveness. He’s a little bit of a throwback. I was hoping they’d trade him (before the game).”

Plainfield-based band to play Vans Warped Tour on Saturday in Tinley Park

LAINFIELD – As one of the local winners of Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands, the Plainfield-based band Marina City will play Vans Warped Tour on Saturday in Tinley Park.

Ernie Ball was a musician and developer of innovative products for guitars. Nineteen years ago, his company began an annual Battle of the Bands in conjunction with the established music festival, Vans Warped Tour.

“It’s a dream come true,” said lead vocalist Ryan Argast of Plainfield.

Argast said Marina City almost didn’t enter again this year, preferring to concentrate on performances. When the band did enter, promotion was low-key, but the fans’ comments were anything but.

“They said special things, like that we had helped them through really tough times,” Argast said. “I think that’s basically what got us in this tour.”

No signs of slowing down

Marina City has been active and busy since its first show three years ago at House of Blues with five other local bands, a show that sold out, Argast said. In fact, Ball’s Battle of the Bands is just one opportunity in the band’s packed schedule.

Marina City recently returned from a Midwest/East Coast tour and will do a nonstop, 12-show tour from Aug. 13 to 24 to states that include Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, Argast said.

On Aug. 15, Marina City will headline at Reggie’s in Chicago to celebrate the release of “Wanderlust,” aptly titled as Marina City recorded the EP in a Seattle, Washington, studio.

In addition, Marina City has recorded a music video to the EP’s first single, “The Haunting,” which can be seen on YouTube. A second music video for a second single, “I Can’t Love You,” is in production, Argast said.

“Wanderlust” joins Marina City’s previously released EPs “In the Wake of Dreaming” in 2010 and “Chimera” in 2014.

With a main fan base of people ages 15 to 24, Marina City prefers to play all-age shows, Argast said. Three of the members don’t drink, so Marina City isn’t a “crazy, partying band”

Argast: former teen pop artist

At 22, Argast, the band’s manager and booking agent, is no industry novice. When he was 17 and a student at Plainfield North High School, Argast – then known as Ryan Alan – was a pop artist signed to Toxic Productions.

His first music video, “Forever 17,” was recorded at the school and is still viewable on YouTube.

Argast said he remained with Toxic Productions for a year and left on good terms for a more collaborative project.

In short, Argast wanted his back-up band for Ryan Alan to be a full-fledged touring band that played its own genre of music: aggressive pop rock.

“I felt we could all go a lot farther if we all felt it [the musical act] was ours,” Argast said.

touches, even the drummer, he added.

“Everyone thinks the drummer comes in at the end,” Argast said, “but he is very much a part of the songwriting process.”

Band members are Eric Somers-Urrea of Naperville (drums), Matthew Gaudiano of Plainfield (vocals, keyboard), Brian Johnson of Plainfield (vocals, rhythm guitar), Todor Birindjiev of Arlington Heights (lead

guitar) and Aaron Heiy of Shorewood (bass guitar).

Flexible day jobs make touring possible. Argast studied business entrepreneurship and marketing at Columbia College in Chicago, so he is employed by the band to do those very things.

“We want to be able to do this until we’re basically dead,” Argast said.

“We want to make a living doing what we love – playing music together and supporting ourselves and our families with it.”

A longstanding dream

Playing Warped Tour has been Argast’s dream since he was 15. Johnson, when he was younger and in another band, even wrote a song about performing in Warped Tour, Argast said.

Of course, Argast would be thrilled if Marina City advanced to the next level of competition – the grand prize-winning band plays every date on next year’s Warped Tour, Argast said – but he is not worried.

“We’re just hoping that something happens and we’re able to go to the next round,” Argast said. “If not, we’ll just keep doing what we’re doing.”

Dear Abby: I’m frustrated about how to connect with my young adult son’s 18-year-old girlfriend. He told me she has a bad relationship with her divorced parents, so he’s hoping we can bond.

A problem that comes up frequently is, she’s so anxious to show me how skilled and knowledgeable she is, she misses any tips and techniques I try to subtly teach her. They live together in another state, so our weekend visits at each other’s homes seem to amplify the problem.

I’ll give you an example: When I removed ice cubes from an ice tray, I ran water over the bottom briefly before twisting the tray. She laughed like I was clueless and said, “You don’t have to do that, just twist the tray.”

I replied that the water helped release the cubes more cleanly “because of the physics of the warmer water.” She teared up, left the room and told my son (who repeated it to me) that I was being critical of her.

I have expressed appreciation for her, and my son has reassured her of my intentions, but I’m getting tired of tiptoeing around her issues. How can I help her understand she can learn from me without it meaning I think any less of her? – On Eggshells in

In general, the work will include furnishing and installing security cameras and a VMS system including supporting systems such as cabling at the main library with an alternate for an installation in the Black Road Branch location.

No bid will be considered unless the Bidder furnishes evidence satisfactory to the Library that the Bidder has the necessary facilities, abilities, experience, equipment, and financial and physical resources available to fulfill the conditions of the Contract and execute the work, should the Contract be awarded to such Bidder.

This project is subject to the Illinois Prevailing Wage Act, 820 ILS 130/1 et seq.
