Ready for tax referendum Park district surveys show more than half of voters are in favor of tax measure

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Armed with mostly positive feedback from mail and phone surveys, the Joliet Park District appears to be poised to float a tax referendum on the November ballot.

A scientific phone poll showed that 58 percent of Joliet voters would likely vote in favor of a tax measure, versus 26 percent who would vote against it, the Joliet Park Board learned Monday night.

The poll of 300 likely voters was conducted June 30 and July 1 by Public Opinion Strategies. It had a margin of error of 5.6 percent.

The findings mirrored those of the district’s mail survey, in which 60 percent of the nearly 1,000 residents re-

sponding said they’d be willing to support a $20.9 million referendum for a multitude of park improvements, including health and safety work, re-forestry and tree planting, renovation of 21 parks, an East Side recreational center and resurfacing of roads and trails in Pilcher Park.

One project that failed to receive much support was the construction of a second ice rink at Inwood Recreational Center. Twenty-one percent of those responding to the mail survey said the rink should be eliminated from the proposal, said Paul Hanley of George K. Baum & Company, a Chicago investment firm consulting with the park district.

A pitch for a field house at Inwood also received only marginal support in the two surveys, though it did much better than the ice rink, Hanley said.

According to surveys, voters were mostly concerned about safety issues, along with the need to fix up existing parks and replace trees.

ceived support, Hanley said.

“People get it,” Hanley said. “They want equity. Voters are fair.”

Funding for the entire $20.9 million package would require raising the district tax rate from approximately 37 cents to 46 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, an increase of about $21.60 per year on a home valued at $100,000.

Park Board President Glen Marcum said he was pleased with the results of the surveys, which indicated that 74 percent those polled believed the park district was doing a good job with taxpayer money.

The board will consider placing a measure on the ballot at a special meeting on Aug. 11, said Dominic Egizio, the district’s executive director.

2 dead from Route 6 accident; 2 others seriously injured Sunday

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Two young lives ended as a result of a one-vehicle accident on Route 6 near Gun Club Road Sunday night.

Minooka 16-year-old Kendall Forth died Monday afternoon after being transported from the accident scene to St. Francis Hospital in Peoria late Sunday, according to Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan.

Another passenger, James Harris III, 22, of Channahon was pronounced dead at the scene by Grundy County Coroner John Callahan.

Both victims who were killed in the accident were seated in the rear of the vehicle and were ejected.

The driver of the vehicle and the front seat passenger are still in the hospital.

At about 11 p.m. Sunday, Forth and Harris were ejected from an SUV traveling east

on Route 6 after the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car left the roadway and went into the south ditch where it rolled several times into a neighboring field.

The driver – an 18-year-old male from Shorewood – was taken by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downer’s Grove, the sheriff said. The driver pulled himself out of the vehicle. Hospital staff could not be reached Monday for an updated on his condition.

A front seat passenger– a 20-year-old male from Minooka – had to be extracted from the vehicle and was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Callahan said.

Advocate Christ would not release updated information on the passenger’s condition Monday afternoon.

He and the driver were both in critical condition when they left the scene Sunday night, said Assistant Fire Chief Bob

“All of their conditions were very serious,” Wills said.

Emergency crews responded to the scene at 11:13 p.m. after a witness called in the accident.

“The witness said the vehicle passed her at a high rate of speed,” Sheriff Callahan said.

After passing the witness, the vehicle returned to its lane but veered onto the shoulder and then appeared to over-correct as it tried to get back in its lane, the sheriff said the witness reported.

Crews from Channahon, Minooka, Morris and Coal City were on the scene for more than two hours and performed one extrication, Wills said.

The crash remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department.

Danger strikes again at construction zone in Channahon Township

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com and VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP – Five people are dead after two separate collisions Monday involving semitrailers in the Interstate 55 construction zone at the Des Plaines River Bridge.

Four people were killed when a semitrailer rear-ended three vehicles that had backed up in the northbound lanes near Arsenal Road at 2:17 p.m.

Monday. Illinois State Police only identified them all as female.

A second collision happened at 2:33 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Route 6 when one semitrailer rear-ended another. Police still were investigating that incident Monday night.

Both drivers in the second accident were hospitalized, but initially there had been no reports of serious injuries. State police announced at a news conference Monday night that one person died from the second accident because of medical problems.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said the victims’ identities were being withheld Monday until their families could be notified.

Then the semitrailer abruptly switched lanes and rear-ended the three vehicles, which were stopped because traffic was backed up because of construction work on the Des Plaines River Bridge, according to authorities.

The accident occurred in the northbound lanes imme-

diately south of mile marker 243.5 near the ExxonMobil plant.

Randy Ness did not reveal the identity of the driver of the semitrailer, but said at the night news conference the driver was undergoing mandatory blood and urine tests for illegal substances.

The red semitrailer, which was carrying a flatbed trailer, suffered heavy front-end damage. A nearby green Kia was mangled on both sides and entangled on the passenger side with the back of a red car. A

few yards away a vehicle had overturned in a ditch on the side of the road with two victims inside, according to police at the scene.

Police said two of the deceased were the driver and rear passenger in a green Kia, one was the front passenger of a Chevy van and the last victim was in a Dodge vehicle.

Traffic was diverted while the interstate and a nearby frontage road were filled with emergency vehicles. Patients were taken from the scene by helicopter. Ambulances from

Coal City, East Joliet and Minooka were among those at the scene.

This is the second year of the Des Plaines River Bridge construction project. In 2013, there were 12 crashes resulting in injuries, including two fatalities, due to sudden backups in the construction corridor.

State Rep. Larry Walsh, D-Elwood, worked with state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, in a committee last year to address traffic concerns in the construction zones surrounding the project.

A study led to portable “Smart Monitor” signs that tell motorists the time it takes to get through the zone and if they should seek alternate routes.

“I think we’ve done everything we possibly could,” Walsh said Monday, recounting discussions state legislators have had with the MidWest Truckers Association and Illinois Trucking Association. “We’ve told them to get the word out to their drivers and make sure that they’re safe coming into the zone. This was an unfortunate chain of events.”

Walsh, who said Monday afternoon that he couldn’t comment specifically until more details from the crashes emerge, said the incident is going to be a factor in future talks about construction zones and trucking.

“Right now, thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims,” he said.

Monday’s accidents were the third and fourth fatal accidents involving semitrailers in

a little over four months.

Both accidents Monday involved collisions while traffic was backed up in a construction zone leading to the Des Plaines River Bridge.

The two other fatal collisions occurred on nearby Arsenal Road and Illinois Route 53.

On March 18, an 8-year-old girl died when a minivan she

was in was struck by a semitrailer in the curb lane of Route 53 in Elwood.

On May 30, just days after Elwood started enforcing traffic restrictions on Baseline Road and Walter Strawn Drive aimed at steering truck traffic away from the village, a Michigan man died when his vehicle was struck by a semitrailer cab

that ran a stoplight at the intersection of Baseline and Arsenal roads.

Truck traffic in the Elwood area was the main topic at a town hall meeting June 30 in Elwood by state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood.

Residents grilled the legislators about what could be done

to curb traffic problems and enhance safety along routes leading to CenterPoint Intermodal Center industrial parks in Elwood and Joliet.

Meanwhile, Elwood has agreed to rescind its truck traffic restrictions while facing a federal lawsuit brought by CenterPoint Properties and other trucking interests in the area.

New Lockport store sells only e-cigarettes Use of product is growing

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Ramy Betouni was a smoker for 15 years but says he kicked the habit with the help of electronic cigarettes.

The device, which can resemble an actual cigarette, runs on a battery and is designed to deliver nicotine, fruit flavors and other chemicals by turning them into an aerosol that can be inhaled.

The electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes Betouni smoked – or “vaped” – back in 2008 helped him to quit smoking and inspired him to start selling them.

After running the Vapor Cabin online since 2008, he decided to open up a shop at 116 E. Ninth St. in Lockport on June 3.

“This is made for people who are trying to quit,” he said about the product. “This is realistically for the over-30 who smoked for a while, who grew up and says, ‘You know, I want to be healthy and live long and I want to have kids and provide for them.’ ” Studies show use of e-cigarettes has grown, but so have

According to an April 3 CDC study, the number of calls to poison centers nationwide involving e-cigarette liquids containing nicotine rose from one call a month in September 2010 to 215 per month in February 2014.

Betouni said much of the controversy surrounding e-cigarettes is up in the air.

The research should be done first before people criticize the product, he said. Still, he said, he doesn’t think e-cigarettes are unhealthy since it uses the same flavor ingredients found in strawberry cup-

cakes and lemonade.

“My body tells me it’s fine,” he said. “I wake up and I don’t have a heavy chest.

I can go up a flight of stairs without being winded. You feel better.”

Duke said many customers seek e-cigarettes because they are more convenient to use than a cigarette.

There is some worry about youths using e-cigarettes, especially if they are serving as an entry point for tobacco products. A CDC study last September found the use of e-cigarettes among U.S. middle and high school students doubled between 2011 and 2012.

Betouni said his shop doesn’t sell e-cigarettes to customers under 18. While many youths might find them cool to use, he said, it’s more of a tool for people to either quit or smoke healthier.

E-cigarettes are not meant for children, he said.

“I think we would have less issues in general with the government getting involved if they weren’t in it,” he said.

Romeoville expands time for public commentary

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The Romeoville Village Board is now allowing visitors more time for public comment at board meetings.

The Village Board met in special session last week and integrated a public comment policy into the Code of Ordinances that increases time for the “petitions from the public” portion of board meetings from three to five minutes per speaker.

“For as long as I can remember, we always had a three-minute rule for petitions from the public,” Village Manager Steve Gulden said.

“It’s very important to have a public comment portion. But [Mayor John Noak] felt that five minutes would be a very good, generous amount of time for the public.”

The five-minute limit is one of the longest for public comment compared to policies at nearby municipalities,

But beside the extension of time, Gulden said the rest of the comment policy is simply putting into writing what the village already practices.

The policy lays out separate rules for comment at public hearings and petitions from the public at board meetings.

For public hearings, those wishing to speak or testify on an issue need to sign in before the start of the public hearing. Each individual will

have 10 minutes to present testimony.

The mayor has the power to rule out of order any “repetitious, irrelevant or immaterial testimony.” Any question on the admissibility or subject of evidence by the mayor can be overruled by a majority vote of the board.

For petitions from the public, anyone wishing to speak must sign in before the meeting starts. Each individual has five minutes to talk.

For any type of public comment, the policy states the mayor can take actions to maintain an orderly and civil hearing.

“The public hearing or meeting has to be professional,” Gulden said, adding that the rules should be interpreted to prevent swearing, ranting or causing an issue that can turn into a physical conflict. “As far as repetition, it’s to keep order. We would ask people to get together as a representative if they have the same view.”

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College Foundation wants to change its operating agreement with the college after administrative action taken against the foundation’s executive director hampered its ability to process a donation.

The foundation decided July 16 to terminate its existing independent contractor agreement with the college, JJC Foundation President Thomas Osterberger said in letter to Debra Daniels, president of the college.

The action was prompted after Kristin Mulvey, the foundation’s director and the college’s executive director of resource development, was placed on administrative leave following an employee complaint.

During Mulvey’s absence, a donor she was working with was ready to make a substantial gift, Osterberger said Monday.

“With her on administrative leave, it was difficult to connect with her,” he said.

“Sometimes it takes years to bring these donors along.”

Kelly Rohder, JJC’s director of communications, said the college declined to comment publicly on internal issues except to say that it will follow its well-established practices and procedures on the matter.

Osterberger said the foundation believes there is no reason that the complaint against Mulvey will be substantiated.

“Kristen Mulvey has raised millions of dollars and we have our utmost faith in her,” Os-

terberger said. However, the incident has put a spotlight on the need to rework the operating agreement, he said.

Under the agreement, the college handles the daily operations of the foundation and is reimbursed. It’s a more cost-effective way of running the operation, and allows the foundation to maximize its gift-giving, Osterberger said.

The group, which has more than $17 million in assets, awards more than $700,000 in scholarships each year.

“If we can’t arrive at a new agreement ... the cost of running the foundation will effectively reduce the annual gifts to the college and its students, a result nobody wants to see,” Osterberger said.

The current agreement, which Osterberger said was signed in 2006, includes a 120day termination period. Osterberger said he was hopeful that the foundation and college could reach a new agreement during that time frame.

The foundation plans to meet with the college board and try to amend the agreement in a way to meet the requirements of its nonprofit status, Osterberger said. He emphasized that the contract issue does not involve any kind of disagreement with college trustees.

Rohder said the college administration plans to focus its efforts on continuing a positive relationship with the foundation.

“The college values its relationship with the foundation, a partnership that has been in place for over 40 years,” she said.

JOLIET – A new trial date for one of the defendants in the Hickory Street killings will be chosen Wednesday.

A trial for Bethany L. McKee, 20, had previously been slated to start Monday. But her lawyer, Chuck Bretz, asked for a delay after 10 hours of video recordings were recently obtained under subpoena.

McKee, Adam M. Landerman, 21, and Joshua F. Miner, 26, were all in court Monday while their attorneys and

prosecutors gave status updates on the cases to Judge Gerald Kinney.

The three are accused of strangling Eric Glover and Terrence Rankins, both 22, on Jan. 10, 2013, at Alisa Massaro’s house in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street. While Landerman, McKee and Miner face murder charges, Massaro, 20, pleaded guilty in May to robbery and concealing a homicide. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison in exchange for testifying against the others.

Renato T. Timola, 47, of the 7600 block of Ridgefield Lane in Tinley Park, was sentenced to 4½ years in prison for aggravated criminal sexual abuse after prosecutors dropped sexual assault and aggravated battery charges as part of a deal.

About 4:45 a.m. on Nov. 22, 2013, witnesses at Salem Vil-

lage, 1314 Rowell Ave., caught Timola having sex with a disabled 19-yearold woman, according to poRenato T. lice reports.

Timola Assistant Tinley Park Will County State’s Attorney Mark Fleszewski told Judge Carla Alessio-Policandriotes the victim’s family supported the plea agreement.

They have also filed a lawsuit against Timola and Salem Village, which has not been re-

solved.

Timola has no prior criminal record. While he told Alessio-Policandriotes he graduated high school and understands English, Timola had an interpreter present during court proceedings because his first language is Tagalog, a dialect of the Philippines.

Timola did not make any statement before his plea was accepted, but asked his wife, who was in the courtroom audience, about the medication he’s taking for high blood pressure.

New trial date to be set for Hickory Street defendant

The ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON – Actress Skye McCole Bartusiak, who portrayed Mel Gibson’s young daughter in the 2000 film “The Patriot,” died in her Houston home, her mother said Sunday. She was 21.

Bartusiak’s mother, Helen Bartusiak, told The Associated Press the actress had been living in a garage apartment at her parents’ home. She said the actress’ boyfriend found her unresponsive on her bed Saturday.

Helen Bartusiak said she tried to resuscitate her daughter but could not. She said the actress had been healthy and did not drink or do drugs and the family did not yet know a cause of death.

Bartusiak made her acting debut in the television miniseries “Storm of the Century” in 1999 and also had a role on “24” in 2002-2003.

She made her film debut in “The Cider House Rules” in 1999 and starred with Michael Douglas in “Don’t Say a Word” in 2001. Her most recent move was “Sick Boy” in 2012.

Bartusiak was best known for her role in Gibson’s Revolutionary War epic “The Patriot,” where she played the daughter of militia leader Benjamin Martin who struggles to speak with her father.

“The Patriot” cast also included Heath Ledger, who died after an accidental overdose of painkillers and sedatives in 2008.

Rauner keeps up push for term limits

By SARA BURNETT The Associated Press CHICAGO – Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner kept up his drumbeat for Illinois term limits, saying Monday that “voters deserve a voice” on the issue and that the effort to put a measure on the November ballot isn’t over despite recent court decisions and a tight timeline.

“We are not going to give up,” Rauner said during a campaign event in Chicago.

The Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, Paul Vallas, criticized the Winnetka businessman for throwing his support behind the cause only when it became politically helpful.

Rauner, who’s making his first bid for public office, has made limiting state legislators to eight years in office a major piece of his campaign to unseat Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn.

He’s chairman of a committee that gathered more than 500,000 signatures to put an initiative on the ballot, and has contributed $600,000 of his own money to the effort.

A lawyer for top Democratic lawmakers filed a lawsuit on behalf of business leaders to stop the question from appearing on the ballot, saying the measure didn’t meet necessary constitutional requirements.

In June, a Cook County judge agreed.

The committee is now turning to the Chicago-based First District Appellate Court, which agreed Monday to hear the case on an expedited basis.

In its order, the court said all briefs must be filed by Aug. 11. Rauner said if the appeals court agrees with the lower court ruling, his Committee for Legislative Reform and Term Limits will appeal again to the supreme court.

for the Legislature to override a governor’s veto and change the sizes of the Illinois House and Senate.

Rauner has seized on the issue as part of his criticism of “career politicians” and business as usual in Springfield.

But he also acknowledges it has huge appeal among Illinois voters, including the indepen-

Quinn led an effort to establish term limits when he was running for Illinois secretary of state in 1994. But his campaign also has called the Rauner initiative “a poorly-drafted, election-year proposal.”

The term limits proposal was one of two that Cook County Judge Mary Mikva ruled could not be on the ballot. Supporters of the other initiative – which would have changed the once-a-decade process by which Illinois’ political maps are drawn – opted not to appeal. They’re planning to try again at a later election.

Regional Education Office consolidation not easy process

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois state education officials say they’re still working out the details of coming mergers of Regional Offices of Education around the state.

The State Board of Education approved a new map last fall cutting the number of regional offices from their current 44 to 35. The offices have a July 30, 2015, deadline to consolidate.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reported that regional superintendents around the state have met a handful of times since then to discuss how to proceed and set up a basic timeline. But the transition is going more smoothly in some areas than others.

Regional offices of education oversee a number of districts in various regions. They handle everything from school building inspections to bus driver training and professional development for teachers.

Chicago mayor holds meeting on city’s violence program

CHICAGO – Three days after a bullet fired on the a city street pierced a wall and killed an 11-year-old girl playing inside a house, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel gathered law enforcement officials, educators and others on Monday to talk about violence in the city.

Though Emanuel and others said the meeting had been planned for months and the mayor did not mention Shamiya Adams by name, Friday night’s shooting of the girl on the city’s West Side as she made s’mores with her friends brought urgency to the gathering.

“When an 11-year-old African American is shot and killed... that hurts the entire city, the future of the entire city,” said the moderator of the meeting, Matt McGill, a prominent local radio host. “We’re here to make sure

Emanuel touched on themes that he and others have repeatedly raised as Chicago grapples with a stubborn gang and violence problem that has been largely responsible for the shootings numbering in the dozens in recent weekends and a homicide total that has led the nation in recent years.

He mentioned the illegal guns that flood the city’s streets, something Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy talks about during his weekly news conferences in which he displays the latest examples of illegal guns seized by a police force that seizes more of them than any in the United States.

And he said resources must be committed not only to law enforcement as they were when the federal government dispatched more federal agents to the city, but to educational and jobs programs for young people that he said have been expanded

and will continue to expand.

Emanuel, who visited members of Adams’ family on Saturday and who has become emotional when talking about her death, said the entire city has a role to play to give children a chance at a better life.

“These are good kids, really good kids trying against big odds to make the right set of choices,” he said.

Missing swimmer’s body found in Fox River

CARPENTERSVILLE – Authorities say they’ve found the body of a missing swimmer in the Fox River in suburban Chicago.

Carpentersville police said late Sunday that the man’s body was recovered after hours of searching. The victim wasn’t immediately identified pending notification of family.

Police say he was fishing on the river with friends. They decided to go swimming when they got

caught in the river’s current. The Carpentersville Fire Department rescued the victim’s friend. A third friend didn’t enter the water.

The Carpentersville Police Department and Kane County coroner are investigating.

Elgin man dies after being trapped under tractor

GENEVA TOWNSHIP – The Kane County sheriff says an Elgin man has died after he was trapped under a tractor.

Kane County sheriff’s officials said 47-year-old Joel Bork of Elgin died Sunday afternoon. Deputies responded to an address in Geneva Township, where they found Bork. He had been operating a lightweight front loader tractor on his family farm.

Officials don’t know how it happened, but they say the tractor flipped over and trapped Bork underneath. Officials say Bork was alone at the time and relatives called 911 when they couldn’t

locate him. Bork was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chicago man dies after police use stun gun

CHICAGO – Authorities say a 41-year-old man has died after Chicago police used a stun gun while trying to break up a fight.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that 41-year-old Francisco Rocha of Chicago died Saturday afternoon on the city’s Southwest Side. The Cook County medical examiner and police say Rocha was involved in a fight with several other men when officers arrived at the scene.

Police say officers couldn’t control Rocha so they used the stun gun. He was pronounced dead at Saint Anthony Hospital.

The medical examiner’s office said Sunday that autopsy results were inconclusive pending further studies.

Rick Perry is deploying up to 1,000 National Guard troops to the Texas-Mexico border over the next month to combat what he said Monday were criminals exploiting a surge of children pouring into the U.S. illegally.

Perry, a vocal critic of the White House’s response to the border crisis who is himself mulling a second presidential run, said the state has a responsibility to act after “lip service and empty promises” from Washington.

“I will not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor,” the governor said.

The deployment of National Guard troops, which may act in a law enforcement capacity under state authority, will cost Texas an estimated $12 million per month. They will simply be “referring and deterring” immigrants and not detaining people, Texas Adjutant General John Nichols said. But he added that the National Guard could take people into custody if need be.

“We think they’ll come to us and say, ‘Please take us to a Border Patrol station,” Nichols said.

Messages seeking comment were left with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Perry bristled at suggestions from some Democratic state lawmakers and business groups that his move means Texas is militarizing is southern border.

As governor, Perry can deploy National Guard troops, but that means Texas has to pay for it. An order by Obama would have meant Washington paid. Still, Perry and other top Texas conservatives said they expect the federal government to eventually reimburse the state.

“Texans are willing to put the boots on the ground, but we expect Washington to foot the bill,” said Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican who is favored to replace Perry in November.

Pain of casino closings far-reaching

With two young daughters, a mortgage, no savings and no obvious plan B, the couple is afraid of what the future holds.

“I’m worried; it’s a really stressful situation right now,” she said. “A lot of my co-workers are in shock.

They can’t believe this is really happening.”

The pain of a sudden spasm of casino contraction in what was once the nation’s second-largest gambling market will hurt not only families like the Blancos.

And New Jersey’s programs for senior citizens and the disabled, which provide bus rides to and from the su-

permarket or doctor’s office and help with the cost of prescription drugs, have already been cut back as casino tax collections plunge, and could shrink yet again.

In January, the Atlantic Club closed, taken down by two rivals in a bankruptcy court auction, stripped for

parts and shuttered. The Showboat will close on Aug. 31 and Trump Plaza on Sept.

16, barring some last-minute deal to save one or both of them.

Revel, which was hailed as a potential savior of Atlantic City when it opened a little over two years ago, says it

will close if a buyer does not emerge from a bankruptcy auction in August.

That would put nearly 8,000 workers – about a quarter of the city’s casino workforce – on the street.

The casino industry has had a mixed legacy – it hasn’t resulted in the wholesale community improvements some had projected after it opened in 1978, and Atlantic City has continued to grapple with crime.

But it has indisputably made a huge difference in the city’s coffers and in job opportunities, employing more than 45,000 people at the industry’s peak.

Bob McDevitt, president of Local 54 of the Unite-HERE union, plans to seek potential buyers for the three casinos and pledges “flexibility and cooperation” in contract talks. He also is rallying political and public support against the closings, vowing, “we are not taking this lying down.”

Blanco, who has cleaned rooms at Trump Plaza for 18 years, is already preparing for the possibility of her job and that of her husband disappearing within weeks.

First to go will be the Catholic school her 7-year-old daughter now attends.

“I don’t know how I’m going to explain that to her,” Blanco said.

Although Internet gambling revenue has declined in each of the past three months, it is still helping to make up for some of the lost casino revenue. Obama urges immediate access to Ukraine crash site

By JULIE PACE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama sternly called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to compel Kremlin-backed separatists to stop hampering the probe at the Ukraine site of a downed passenger jet and allow international investigators unfettered access.

“What exactly are they trying to hide?” Obama said Monday from the South Lawn of the White House.

Obama also warned Putin that he could face additional economic costs if he fails to take steps to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, but officials said new American sanctions were not imminent. Instead, much of the White House’s focus was on gaining access to the crash site and shoring up European Union sanc-

tions, which have lagged behind U.S. penalties.

EU foreign ministers planned to discuss the prospect of deeper sanctions during a meeting on Tuesday in Brussels. A European official said the discussions were expected to focus on targeting Russian individuals and businesses, as well as possible arms embargoes.

The official said the downing of the passenger jet last week has shifted the calculus among some European nations that had been reluctant to impose tougher sanctions, including Germany and the Netherlands, which lost more than 190 people in the crash. However, the official said there remained splits in the European coalition, with other countries concerned that deepening sanctions on Russia now could harm efforts to gain access to the

crash site.

Both the U.S. and Britain, which has been pushing for aggressive European sanctions, indicated some frustration in particular with France, which is pressing ahead with the sale of warships to Russia. British Prime Minister David Cameron publicly questioned that decision Monday and U.S. officials said they continue to raise the matter in conversations with the French.

While earlier rounds of Western sanctions appear to have had little impact in shifting Putin’s calculus, U.S. officials said Monday that Russia risks being pushed into a recession by the penalties. Officials repeatedly have cited data from the International Monetary Fund downgrading Russia’s growth outlook to nearly zero this year.

Shukri, Ban said that “violence must stop by all sides,” and that they must enter negotiations, seemingly siding with Cairo’s approach.

However, Ban also said: “We can’t claim victory simply by returning matters to where they stood before they led to terrible bloodshed.”

On Monday, President Barack Obama reaffirmed his belief that Israel has the right to defend itself against rockets being launched by Hamas into Israel.

U.N.: Iran gets rid of sensitive nuclear material

By GEORGE JAHN The Associated Press VIENNA – Iran has turned all of its enriched uranium closest to the level needed to make nuclear arms into more harmless forms, the United Nations’ nuclear agency said Sunday.

The move was expected.

Tehran had committed to convert or dilute its 20-percent enriched stockpile under an agreement with six powers last November that froze its atomic programs pending negotiations on a comprehensive deal. Those talks were extended Saturday to Nov. 24.

Still, the development was noteworthy in reflecting Iran’s desire not to derail the diplomatic process with the six countries – the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

Iran had more than 440 pounds of 20 percent enriched uranium when the prelimi-

nary agreement was reached.

That’s nearly enough for one warhead.

A report from the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency obtained by The Associated Press said that all has now been converted or diluted. The report said Iran was observing all of its other commitments as well.

At 20 percent, enriched uranium can be converted quickly to arm a nuclear weapon. Iran denies wanting such arms.

Tehran is keen to seal a deal that would end nuclear-related sanctions on its economy, but is resisting a U.S.-led drive to put stiff, longterm constraints on atomic activities that have both peaceful and weapons-related applications.

The main dispute is over uranium enrichment, which can make both reactor fuel and the fissile core of nuclear warheads.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – A high-level attempt by the U.N. chief and the U.S. secretary of state to end deadly Israel-Hamas fighting was off to a rough start Monday: Gaza’s Hamas rulers signaled they won’t agree to an unconditional cease-fire. Israel’s prime minister said he’ll do whatever is necessary to keep Israelis safe from Hamas attacks, and the overall Palestinian death toll surpassed 560.

Across Gaza, Israeli fighter planes hit homes and a highrise tower, burying families in the rubble. The strike on the Gaza City tower brought down most of the building, killing 11 people – including six members of the same family – and wounding 40, said Palestinian health official Ashraf al-Kidra.

Israeli tanks, meanwhile, shelled a hospital in central Gaza, killing four people and wounding dozens as the daily death toll surpassed 100 for a second day. Israel said the

fire, to be followed by talks on a possible new border arrangement for Gaza. Israel and Egypt have severely restricted movement in and out of Gaza since Hamas seized the territory in 2007.

Hamas, with some support from Qatar and Turkey, wants guarantees on lifting the blockade before halting fire.

The Islamic militant group has no faith in mediation by Egypt’s rulers, who deposed a Hamas-friendly government in Cairo a year ago and tightened restrictions on Gaza – to the point of driving Hamas into its worst financial crisis since its founding in 1987.

The top Hamas leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, said Monday that Gaza’s 1.7 million people share Hamas’ goal of forcing Israel and Egypt to lift the blockade.

“We cannot go back, we cannot go back to the silent death” of the blockade, he said.

“Gaza has decided to end the blockade by its blood and by its courage.”

On guard for online privacy If you care about online privacy, you are forgiven for your despair.

More data than ever is being uploaded and it’s getting easier to access and cheaper to store. At the same time, cyberintruders pose a threat at every turn.

We know these things instinctively, but sometimes it takes a skillful presentation to make them real. Thanks to Mary Meeker, they’re real now.

Each year, venture capitalist Meeker presents a dense, high-level view of her analysis into the most important Internet usage trends. At this year’s Code Conference, she did it again. It’s worth your time to dive into her 162-slide deck at: http://www.kpcb.com/internet-trends.

Among her most important observations: Internet users are freely uploading volumes of shareable data, which marketers happily mine for insights. More than 1.8 billion photos are uploaded each day. More photos have been uploaded already in 2014 than were uploaded all of last year.

This is enabled by the growing distribution of sensors – cameras, headsets, gaming devices – that puts more people within reach of an online audience.

As Moore’s Law has posited, the costs of computing, bandwidth and digital storage continue to decline. Smartphones are getting cheaper. The use of cloud computing is growing. And the “Internet of Things” – connected devices – is contributing to the flow of digital information.

Meanwhile, data-mining techniques and tools are improving. That means they’re becoming more useful to marketers – and more threatening to privacy advocates.

Consider a common app: Netflix. The streaming movie service now has 44 million subscribers and is growing at a 25 percent annual rate. That means that Netflix’s algorithms can now analyze terabytes of customer-provided data to serve you movie recommendations. It also has a growing understanding of your interests and the ways you spend your time.

On the upside, the growing usefulness and accessibility of big data means it can be used to “solve big problems,” such as improving speech recognition, improving our understanding of government and making health care more efficient.

On the downside, you’ll find it harder to live a private life, unless you disconnect entirely.

Privacy isn’t an entitlement – it’s a skill. And if it’s important to you, you’ll find it harder than ever to practice.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Tax hike not going away, despite what Rauner says “This morning,” 1,063 respondents were told the evening of July 17 during a Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll, “Republican candidate for governor Bruce Rauner released an economic plan for Illinois.

“That plan calls for a freeze on property taxes and rolling back the 2010 tax increase. It also implements a new tax on services, such as advertising, legal services and mini-storage centers. We’d like to know whether this type of plan would make you more likely, or less likely to vote for him.”

Rauner had most certainly tested his service tax proposal backwards and forwards before presenting it to the public last week, so I figured it had to poll fairly well. It did.

The poll found that 53 percent said they’d be more likely to vote for Rauner, while just 32 percent said they’d be less likely to vote for him and 15 percent said it made no difference.

As we’ve discussed before, Rauner has struggled a bit with women, but they actually liked the idea more than men. Fifty-six percent said the idea made them

VIEWS Rich Miller more likely to vote for Rauner, while just 28 percent said they were less likely. The male split was 47 percent more, 39 percent less.

The highest regional support for the plan came from the suburban collar counties, where Rauner did the best in the primary. Sixty-six percent of collar county voters said the proposal made them more likely to vote for Rauner, while 25 percent said less. The split among Downstaters was 53-27. It was 49-3 among suburban Cook County voters, and he was upside down in Chicago, where he always polls poorly, at 32-50.

Just 17 percent of Republicans said they’d be less likely to vote for Rauner while 66 percent said they’d be more likely. Among independents, 56 percent were more likely and 29 percent were less likely to vote for him. And among Democrats, 33 percent were more likely while 53 percent

less likely.

Why does this look so popular?

Well, people hate that income tax hike and they hate their property taxes. On its face, this could look like a “magic bullet” to folks.

There are no magic bullets, of course. If there were, they would’ve already been used.

Rauner specified a mere $577 million in new annual revenues via his service tax, which is nowhere near the $8 billion he wants to give up from the income tax hike.

Rauner says he’d phase out that tax hike over four years, and he’s said he could accomplish this with economic growth.

According to the state’s Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, income tax revenue growth averaged just 6.8 percent between fiscal 1998 and fiscal 2013.

Rauner wants to grow those revenues by almost 67 percent over just four years.

“Rauner’s plan would add more than a half-billion dollars to state coffers, but wouldn’t come close to replacing the $8 billion

Illinoisans were split, with 41 percent of the respondents saying the state can afford it and 43 percent saying it can’t. The poll had a margin of error of +/-3 percent. 28 percent were mobile phone users. And that second set of numbers might’ve been far worse had more specifics been used.

“Too bad [Rauner’s plan] is entirely phony and false and paid for by massive cuts to education,” texted Gov. Pat Quinn’s campaign spokesperson Brooke Anderson last week.

Without massive, unprecedented growth, Rauner would have to cut that $16 billion in spending roughly

in half – and education also makes up half of that $16 billion. “Talk about decimating public education – you’re pretty much eliminating it,” Anderson said, giving us a likely preview of the upcoming TV attack ads.

Not to mention the massive fiscal cliff created by this year’s state budget, which adds billions in deferred costs to next year’s budget. The only way to avoid that is to raise the rate back up to 5 percent after Jan. 1, when it’s scheduled to go down to 3.75 percent.

Rauner’s campaign refused to talk about specific phase-out percentages and timelines last week. But the cold hard reality is that tax hike isn’t going away very soon, no matter what he says.

Bradshaw collects first win while Casper drives in three runs

JOLIET – When a team enters a game with just 10 available field players, it’s really important to grab some type of lead in case someone has to be replaced by a pitcher.

And that’s just what the Joliet Slammers did on Monday night as they kicked off a threegame Frontier League series with Traverse City at Silver Cross Field.

The Slammers fell behind 1-0 in the second but moved in front with four runs in the bottom of that frame. They added two more scores in the fourth and went on to claim a 6-1 victory.

Joliet starter Travis Bradshaw turned in a fine performance, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out seven in seven innings of work to improve to 1-1.

Jake Gronsky signed with the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday and Chris Epps sat out the game after getting injured after diving to make a catch the day before.

That forced Russell Moldenhauer to play in right, Danny Hernandez to step in at second, JD Dorgan handled the catching duties and Adam Lewis was used as the designated hitter.

With the Slammers clad in camouflage uniforms in honor of those who’ve served in the military, what could have been a frustrating evening turned into a critical win for the hosts.

But thanks to the efforts of Bradshaw and the early run support, there wasn’t much drama.

“My first start was a rough outing but it was the first one since spring training,” Bradshaw said. “I had a good relief appearance last week and then I brought it into today and had my stuff working.

“I felt confident in all of the pitches that I was throwing and had some good movement on my fastball so I stuck with that and also threw a few good sliders and changeups and just

This summer he is showing he can be a whole lot more.

The senior outfielder cracked a walkoff single into the left-center field gap with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to score KC Simonich from second base and give the Hilltoppers a 1-0 victory over Prairie Ridge on Monday in the opening round of the Phil Lawler Classic summer baseball tournament at Benedictine University.

JCA (16-0) advances into Tuesday’s 10 a.m. game against Crystal Lake South at North Central College in Naperville. With a victory, the Hilltoppers will be in Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal. With a loss, they would need to win a 12:30 p.m. game in order to be a semifinalist.

Prairie Ridge (18-4) might have been the team to survive Round 1 had JCA’s defense not been up to the challenge of stifling the suicide squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth – not once, but twice.

The Wolves had runners on first and third with nobody out when pitcher Nick Dalesandro, who caught the first seven innings and relieved starter Drake Fellows in the eighth, charged in and flipped the ball to catcher Dan Devine.

Devine made a textbook play, blocking the plate and tagging out the sliding runner.

The next batter attempted the suicide on a 1-2 pitch. He missed Dalesandro’s breaking ball to strike out, and the runner heading home was hung out to dry to complete the double play and end the inning.

“I kind of saw the squeeze coming with the bottom of their lineup up,” Dalesandro said. “I tried to throw pitches that were hard to bunt.”

“That was a great athletic play by Nick on that first squeeze,” JCA coach Jared Voss said. “Then he strikes the next guy out on the squeeze, and Connor comes up and gets the big hit.”

Voss did not want to use Dalesandro on the mound, preferring to have him more available for another game in the tournament, which concludes Thursday. Of course, Prairie Ridge had to come right back and play Downers

“Then again, winning Game 1 is so important,” Voss continued. “It’s such an emotional drain for the loser in a game like this. You don’t want to have to play again right

away to stay in it.”

Brandon had two of JCA’s six hits as the Hilltoppers battled a tough right-hander in senior Ben Cilano, who matched Fellows for seven innings. Fellows allowed five hits and one walk while striking out nine. Cilano yielded four hits.

When Brandon opened the second inning with a double to that same left-center field gap, he was sacrificed to third and then was thrown out attempting to score as a high pitch bounced several feet off the backstop to the catcher, who threw to Cilano for the out.

“I was trying to do anything I could to get a hit there,” Brandon said of his ninth-inning walkoff. It came on a 3-2 pitch after Simonich had drawn a two-out walk and stolen second.

“It made it a little easier after KC stole second,” Brandon said. “They gave me a chance

and this time I made the most of it.”

“It’s crazy how much he [Brandon] has transformed into a regular player from being a pitcher only,” Dalesandro said. “When he was only pitching, guys said he can hit, too, and he’s proving it.”

Dalesandro, who recently has become master of the long fly ball, nearly was the offensive hero in the bottom of the eighth. With two on and two out against reliever Matthew Mohapp, he drilled a long drive to right field, only to see Carson Getzelman pull it in on the warning track about 350 feet from home plate.

“I didn’t know if it could go out, but I thought maybe it would be off the wall,” Dalesandro said. “That is almost as hard as I could hit a ball.”

Of course, had he finished the game then, the miraculous ninth-inning escape, followed

by Brandon’s walkoff, never would have happened.

Former Minooka player learned valuable lessons from Lamping

Throwing strikes and staying ahead of hitters are lessons Tony Bucciferro learned while playing at Minooka that he still uses to this day. earned runs in 15 innings. Before that, though, he was having a stellar season. His ERA overall is at 4.01.

He sits with a 7-9 record but has put up some other good numbers. His strikeout-towalk ratio, for example, is an outstanding 87-15. That is due both to a quality repertoire of fastball, slider and change-up that he can throw for strikes at any time and the constant voices he has heard in his ear since he began pitching.

“You always wish your win-loss record could be better,” Bucciferro said. “But sometimes that’s beyond your control. You can throw a great game, give up only a run or two, but if the other pitcher shuts out your team, you get the loss.

On the other hand, if you have a rough day, your offense can

score a bunch and pick you up and get a win.

“I only want to worry about what I can control, and that’s throwing strikes. That has been preached in the White Sox organization since I got here and coaches Lamping and [Jeff] Petrovic back in Minooka and my coaches at Michigan State did, too. It’s just been hammered in my head to throw strikes.

“The numbers back it up, too. When I am behind in the count, hitters are hitting like .400 against me. When I get ahead, it’s down to like .150.

So, it definitely pays off to get ahead in the count.”

That all sounds well and good, but Bucciferro knows that it isn’t as easy as it sounds.

While he is getting paid to get batters out, the batters are

paid to not allow that. For him, that’s when the fun starts.

“Get ahead, stay ahead,” he said. “That’s the philosophy.

It’s nice that I do have three pitches that I feel like I can throw for a strike at any time.

I was getting by in high school with a fastball and slider, but coach Lamping really helped my career when he taught me a change-up. I know I want to get ahead in the count, but the hitters know that, too. Hitting isn’t easy to do, but keeping guys from hitting isn’t easy, either.

“If they pick up a pattern that you are throwing a firstpitch fastball for a strike every time, they will adjust and start being more aggressive and going after that first pitch. Then, it’s on me to make an adjustment and maybe start off with

a pitch off the plate and get them to chase it. But then they adjust and take it and I am behind in the count.

“It’s a cat-and-mouse game that makes the game so interesting. It’s a different game every time out.”

Bucciferro spent the 2012 season, the year he was drafted, in Rookie League ball, but split his time in 2013 between Rookie and Single-A Kannapolis. He was 4-6 with a 2.50 ERA between the two leagues, earning a spot in Single-A Advanced this season. The nature of the game in the minor leagues is that his future is uncertain, and no timetable has been established for moving up or down.

“They don’t even hint at it,” he said about if he will move up any time soon. “It’s day-by-day.

You could wake up one day, get called into the manager’s office and find out you’ve been called up, moved down or even released. You just never know.

It’s kind of a crazy lifestyle as far as that goes.

“The one thing I have learned is that stuff like that is a lot of times out of your control. It depends on what the organization needs at a given time. Sometimes, you might be in the right place at the right time and get that call, other times you won’t.

“So, you just don’t worry about things that you can’t control. You just do out and do your job every day as best you can. For me, that’s throwing strikes and getting guys out.”

Just like he’s been doing since he was a Minooka Indian.

Back when Tony Bucciferro was a young high school player, he learned some valuable lessons from Minooka pitching coach Jim Lamping.

Now, after a successful college career at Michigan State and a couple of seasons in the White Sox organization, Bucciferro still harkens back to what he learned as an Indian when things get rough.

“Coach Lamping knows his stuff,” Bucciferro said. “He always told me that if things aren’t going well, you have to go back to your pitching personality. Don’t try to be something you’re not. Even now, when things aren’t going so well for me, I still try to do that and things tend to turn back around.”

Bucciferro must have leaned on Lamping’s teachings in Sunday’s game. After enduring three straight rocky starts in a four-game losing streak for Winston-Salem in the Single-A Advanced Carolina League, he almost threw a no-hitter, settling for a one-hitter in a win over Frederick. He allowed Glynn Davis’ single with one out in the ninth and got the next batter to hit into a game-ending double play.

“It was kind of bittersweet, a little heartbreak,” Bucciferro told MLB.com after the game.

“My defense played nearly perfect, [helping me] keep my pitch count down and limit mistakes and whatnot.

‘It was a big game. I wish [the outcome] could have [been different]. Even though a win and complete-game shutout is good, it’s not the glory of a no-hitter. I’ve never had one before. A little heartbreak there, but overall it was a much-needed game.”

In his last three previous games, he had allowed 16

Streacker, Akins took different routes to MMA

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Not long ago, Josh Streacker and Brian Akins likely wouldn’t have anticipated seeing themselves battling for titles in a Mixed Martial Arts event in front of a big crowd.

But that’s just where the pair of fighters will be Saturday evening when they take part in Supreme Promotions’ Summer Fight Series II at Hollywood Casino in Joliet.

After 1,400 showed up for last month’s spectacle at the casino, promoter Jim Jackson has tried to out-do that, lining up at least 20 fights in anticipation of an even bigger turnout.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with the action getting underway at 6 p.m. on an evening where three title belts will be contested before competitors and fans can mingle at an after-party.

Akins faces LaQuinn Scott for the lightweight title, Streacker takes on Sinatra Pool for the welterweight belt and Lemont’s Angel Cabral meets Dean Neely for the heavyweight title.

Streacker, a Bolingbrook and Lewis University graduate who lives in Plainfield, got involved in taekwondo when he was young and used those experiences to help get him into MMA. “I started off in American Taekwondo Association when I was 7 because my parents wanted me to learn to defend myself,” said Streacker, the welterweight belt-holder. “As I started to develop my skills and get better, I wondered what was next. Things got a little boring in taekwondo so I moved to the next challenging step, which was mixed martial arts. With ATA I got a good base that not a lot of people can transfer over to mixed martial arts.

“Everyone knows Jim Jackson and some people hate him, but he’s been a good human being to me. Of course, he wanted my style because it’s electrifying and amazing to watch. I’ve seen things progress and become

Streacker got his degree from Lewis in athletic training and he works with the medical aspect of sports in his job with ATI Physical

Therapy, which gives him a unique insight into how to deal with fighters like himself who compete in MMA. “I work with ATI Physical Therapy and they’re an excellent company to work for,” Streacker said. “We’re actually looking for any way that we can get into the MMA business. So I’m hoping to bring two of my huge passions, athletic training and mixed martial arts, into one.

Being able to do that would be so much fun and it would just make my day.

“This is going to be a great avenue and will open up new things for ATI Physical Therapy, so I’m excited to start it up. The big thing in sports right now is dealing with concussions. So ATI wants to come in and, along with Jim, to come up with something for concussions and I think that it would excellent for the

sport to keep the fighters safer.”

While Streacker had a long background in taekwondo that he could fall back upon, Akins didn’t compete much athletically until he caught the bug of participating in MMA. “When I was 16, I was out making home movies with my friends that people could laugh about on YouTube, that’s what I was known for,” Akins said. “Then all of a sudden, it’s like Brian, that silly guy on YouTube, is now in MMA, and he can probably kick my butt. I train because I feel like I need to train to help me get through my day.

It’s an outlet for stress.

“When I started training, I didn’t plan on competing or getting in the cage, but my coach thought that I should fight, and that’s when I began. I’d been training almost every day and putting in a lot of work so I want to see where I can go with it. I love what I’m doing and I like pushing myself and to have something to focus on so I decided to take a fight.”

The fighter nicknamed ‘Flyin’ Brian’ said the first fight in his life came in a cage, which he lost. To get better, the Oswego East grad travels to a several gyms while also dealing with a regular work schedule at a Walgreens.

“I watched karate movies, so I really liked kicks, but I didn’t know how to box and my wrestling was mediocre,” said Akins, the XFO MMA belt-holder. “People say I’m exciting because I’m well-rounded. In my first few fights I did the little wrestling that I knew but in the past year and a half, I started throwing head kicks and realized I was good at it.

“At my job, I had a line at the register and one of the regulars said to another customer, ‘Do you believe that this guy that’s ringing you out is a fighter?’ When I come back to work after a fight, people ask if I fought since they don’t see any marks on my face. But they like me, and when I was the employee of the month, the picture was of me winning my title.”

Overview: While the radical transformation of their defense has received the most offseason attention from the fans and media, the Bears also enter 2014 with a vastly different look on Joe DeCamillis’ special teams units.

The one constant is placekicker Robbie Gould, coming off another strong season (89.7 field goal conversion rate, including 3 of 4 from 50plus) that leaves him just 92 points shy of surpassing Kevin Butler as the franchise’s all-time scoring leader. Barring injury, he should reach the milestone in 2014 – Gould hasn’t had less than 96 points in a season since his rookie year in ’05.

Gone are long snapper Patrick Mannelly, who retired after appearing in 245 games over 16 seasons, the most by a Bear; Devin Hester, the greatest return specialist in NFL history; punter Adam Podlesh; Blake Costanzo and Zack Bowman, who led the Bears in special teams tackles in 2013 and 2012, respectively.

To help try to offset the losses, general manager Phil Emery signed a plethora of established veterans with impressive special teams résumés, including linebacker Jordan Senn, safeties M.D. Jennings and Danny McCray and wide receivers/returners Micheal Spurlock and Armanti Edwards. Emery spent a sixth-round draft pick on punter Pat O’Donnell, and fellow rookies, cornerback Kyle Fuller and safety Brock Vereen, likely will play on coverage teams.

Punt, kick returners battle for spot

Position battles: No fewer than five players – Weems, Ford, Edwards, Spurlock and Chris Williams – have their eyes on the punt- and kick-return vacancies created by Hester’s departure. Weems, a former Pro Bowler and the most experienced with the Bears of the bunch, heads to camp with a slight edge in the competition, but each will have ample opportunity to gain the trust of DeCamillis and coach Marc Trestman.

O’Donnell technically enters a competition with Tress Way, but the Bears didn’t spend the 191st pick in the draft on O’Donnell without the belief that he would be their punter of the present and future. If everything goes according to plan – the

offense picking up where it left off in 2013, firing on all cylinders – O’Donnell won’t be too busy as a rookie.

For the first time in almost two decades, the Bears will have a long snapper competition, with Chad Rempel, a former CFL player and Olympic bobsledder, and first-year player Brandon Hartson vying to replace Mannelly.

Rempel and O’Donnell seem to have a solid rapport after working out together leading up to the draft. Neither player can replace the veteran leadership provided by Mannelly, but the Bears hope

one can offer similar dependability.

New blood also will make for heated competition on coverage units, where guys like McManis, Steltz, Kelvin Hayden and Isaiah Frey will have to scratch and claw to earn roles and retain roster spots. Rookies such as Jordan Lynch and Christian Jones will need to show well on special teams to make the team.

Contract situations (information from Spotrac): Gould received a four-year extension worth up to $15 million ($9 million guaranteed) in December. Weems agreed to a pay cut that will pay him the veteran minimum ($730,000), despite potentially playing a larger role. Similarly, holdovers Steltz and McManis,

and new arrivals Spurlock and Edwards, are slated to earn the veteran minimum, if they secure roster spots.

Keep an eye on: Williams.

The CFL single-season record holder for return touchdowns has already accomplished a first in his NFL football career: sticking with one team for the duration of the offseason. Williams’ speed is probably unrivaled on this roster, and the Saints were none too pleased to see the Bears poach him off their practice squad in December.

Emery likes his receivers supersized, but the diminutive Williams (5-foot-8, 175 pounds) might not have to be a contributor in the passing game if he proves to be a momentum changer in the return game.

That opened the door for Plainfield’s Ricky Baker, who passed Billy Knippenberg a couple of laps after the restart and went on to claim his fifth late-model victory of the season Friday at Grundy County Speedway.

Eddie Hoffman finished second, followed by Brett Sontag, Knippenberg, Chris Cooling,

Brandon Clubb, Nutley, Tony Brutti, Koerner and David Einhaus.

Baker was the fast qualifier. Knippenberg won the first heat ahead of Cooling. Chuck Sottosanti took the second heat, with Brutti finishing second.

Ron Vandermeir won the Mid-American feature. John Ventrello finished strong and captured second. Kevin Gentile was third. Joe Vinachi, Kevin Murphy, Jim Kachel, Tom Knippenberg, Luke Baldwin, Jeremy Clubb and Cody Clubb rounded out the top 10.

Knippenberg set the fast time. Gentile and Vince Cooper finished 1-2 in the first heat and Jeremy Clubb and Kachel took the top spots in the second heat.

Logan Love won the street stock feature ahead of Eddie League and Bob Davis. John Senerchia, Tim Stewart, Rita Fields, Billy Rud, Craig Matteson, Darrell Gay and Christy Penrod completed the top 10.

Jake Bradley set the fast time. Love won the first heat, with Davis running second.

Austin Blackwell won the pure stocks feature after Cirk Lindemuth was docked four positions for violating a division rule. White Sox manager Robin Ventura suspected two weeks ago that trade rumors were a distraction for his second baseman, and that probably hasn’t changed. Beckham is still in a slump.

“I haven’t really talked to him about it but I’m sure some of that is probably there,’’ Ventura said. “You hear about it enough and [it can be a] distraction. Hopefully it’s not.’’

Beckham and the trade deadline were topics of conversation before Monday’s game. Ventura and Paul Konerko were both asked about him.

“I was traded twice, but during the season it’s such an abrupt thing, one day you’re here and the next day you’re in a different uniform,’’ Ventura said.

CHICAGO – Chris Sale pitched seven effective innings in his first outing since the All-Star break and Adam Dunn had two RBIs and scored a run to lead the White Sox to a 3-1 victory over the slumping Kansas City Royals on Monday.

‘Hardest thing is writing and talking’ Braidwood teenager has same disorder as ‘Harry Potter’ star

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent BRAIDWOOD – Thirteenyear-old Brandon Panico loves swimming, playing basketball, riding his bike and reading, just like most kids his age.

He just has to do them a little differently.

The Braidwood teen uses a modified swimming stroke, rides a three-wheeled bike and finds that it takes a longer to throw a basket and to walk and dribble at the same time.

Reading is easy, although he occasionally adds extra words to the text.

Brandon was born with developmental dyspraxia, a condition that makes ordinarily simple muscle movements difficult to perform. What others do without even thinking – such as holding onto an object – Brandon must consciously consider how to make the necessary muscles move.

“The hardest thing is writing and talking,” he said.

The disorder has affected nearly every area of Brandon’s life: physical, emotional, social, language and sensory.

“We deal with muscle weakness, clumsiness and speech issues,” said Crystal Panico, Brandon’s mother.

“He gets frustrated when he has to repeat things.”

Developmental dyspraxia is called a hidden handicap because it’s not readily visible.

It’s a neurological disorder present throughout the brain that results in lifelong impairment of motor function, memory, judgment, processing and other cognitive skills. It also can affect the immune system.

According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, developmental dyspraxia affects an estimated 6 percent of children. Seventy percent of those who have it are men, and 30 percent women. “Harry Potter” actor Daniel Radcliffe reportedly has it.

Current thought is that it may be caused by motor neurons in the brain not developing properly or not forming proper connections, making them less effective at transmitting electrical signals from the brain to the muscles.

Panico said Brandon wasn’t diagnosed until he was 3 years old, but he showed symptoms much earlier. Everything was normal during the pregnancy, with the exception of him arriving in the world two weeks later than expected.

The first thing she noticed was that Brandon was not nursing as well. But then he had trouble with the bottle, too, gagging at times. The same happened with sippy cups, spoons and straws. He

also had a constant need to be held.

“You could never put him down,” Crystal said. “He was happy when he was touching you.”

Crystal said their doctor and a developmental specialist both told her he was just a little delayed and would outgrow it, but she had trouble believing it. Brandon didn’t start walking when he should.

He also had trouble sleeping, a strong light sensitivity and became very upset when touching fabrics that most toddlers loved, like a fuzzy blanket or soft pajamas.

“He would just flip out on us,” Crystal said. “He would just scream bloody murder.”

Finally, the family found a developmental specialist, who examined Brandon while he walked, talked, gripped objects, moved his tongue and performed other routine movements. At age 3, Brandon was diagnosed with developmental dyspraxia.

“We left kind of dumbfounded,” Crystal said. “It was overwhelming. It was just kind of, where do you go? I’d never heard of it before.”

Since then, Brandon has received speech, physical and occupational therapy. He’s also had teachers and school staff willing to go the extra mile to help him learn and adjust, as each child is different,

Crystal said.

Additional help and understanding came from Warren Fried, founder and director of Dyspraxia Foundation USA, headquartered in Chicago.

Crystal found him on the Internet, and he and her family have become friends.

“Having Warren is how we cope,” she said.

Fried grew up with the condition and knows first-hand how frustrating it can be. He wasn’t diagnosed until he was 19.

“It’s a very intense disorder,” he said. “Teachers called me stupid and retarded and said that I wouldn’t amount to anything.”

Many children with the condition are mistakenly placed in lower-level classrooms, he said, when in fact, they should be placed in the higher-level ones. Therapy today, Fried said, focuses on “re-wiring” the brain, teaching it step by step to respond to situations and make good judgments and decisions.

For instance, Fried has no sense of time or can’t see three-dimensionally, which is why he can’t drive.

There are no medications to treat developmental dyspraxia, he said.

ADVICE Younger couples weigh in on money matters Dear Readers: On April 11, I printed a letter from “Wondering in Washington,” a man asking why young men in general today have the attitude that “any money I earn is mine” in a marriage or live-in situation. He said when he married, he and his wife considered what they earned to be “theirs” – not his or hers. When I asked my “younger readers” to chime in, I was inundated. Some excerpts: Dear Abby: My husband was 26 and I was 24 when we got married.

To me, how young couples handle money says a lot about their attitude toward marriage.

My mother always said, “If you can’t trust a man with your money, why would you trust him with your heart?” I kept that in mind when I was dating, so when my boyfriend and I married, we didn’t have serious underlying issues like addiction, compulsive spending, etc. – Mom Of 2 In Seattle Dear Abby: My first husband

Many of our friends keep their finances separate, and the reason usually involves hearing their parents argue over money. What I find interesting is that the wife usually came up with the idea.

Gone are the days of the stay-athome wife who takes care of the house and raises the children. I’m as guilty of those preconceptions as anyone. I thought marriage meant being totally devoted to your spouse and you discussed everything.

I now believe both parties in a relationship have financial responsibilities to the other. In my first marriage, the majority of financial responsibilities fell on me. The financial obligations in my second marriage are different. We have a separate maintenance agreement. I pay only part of our living expenses. Main culprit in skin damage is exposure to sun Dear Doctor K: As I’ve entered my 40s, the skin on my hands and face has started to change. What happens to our skin as we age?

Dear Reader: The shortest answer is that our skin gets old, like the rest of us. In fact, the three layers of skin get old in different ways.

The skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis, forms a protective physical barrier. The dermis, or middle layer, contains collagen and elastin, which provide strength, firmness and elasticity.

It also contains blood vessels, immune cells, nerves and glands that produce sweat and oil. The deepest layer consists of connective tissue and fat. (I’ve put an illustration of these layers on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

As the years go by, skin undergoes a number of changes.

Epidermal cells don’t slough off as easily. Skin doesn’t retain as much moisture. The collagen and elastin in the middle layer break down. As a result, the skin is less firm and less elastic.

It’s similar to what happens to a rubber band as it gets old and dry: It loses elasticity. As a result, when gravity tugs on the skin,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff instead of bouncing back, it starts to sag: Fine lines form around the eyes, deepened lines appear at the corners of the mouth and across the forehead, and skin in various places (such as under the jaw and in the neck) starts to hang down.

Other changes may not be as noticeable to you. For example, the skin’s ability to fight infection, feel sensations and regulate body temperature also diminishes with age.

But the single biggest cause of damage to skin as you age is not aging itself; it’s sun exposure.

Over the years, sun exposure causes fine and coarse wrinkles; baggy skin with a yellow, leathery appearance; and dry, scaly skin.

It also increases the risk for skin cancer.

I grew up near the beaches of Southern California. Many sun worshippers were on the beach pretty much all day, every day.

By the time they were in their late 30s, many of these people had skin

that was as dry, scaly and wrinkled as someone in his or her 70s.

To distinguish the effects of sun exposure from those of aging, look at and feel the skin on your face and the backs of your hands.

Now do the same on a part of your body that isn’t regularly exposed to the sun, such as your lower abdomen or buttocks. The difference can be dramatic.

It’s never too late to protect your skin from sun damage: • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

• Reapply sunscreen every couple of hours.

• Wear wide-brimmed hats and other protective clothing.

• Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when its rays are most intense.

It’s true that our skin ages, and there’s not a lot we can do about it. But we can do something about the damage done by the sun that makes our skin – and us – look old.

Teen wants to live with boss Dr. Wallace: I really need your advice. I’m 19 and the single mother of a beautiful 7-month-old daughter. The baby’s father is in prison for nine years. He and two friends were convicted of robbing convenience stores with the aid of a gun.

I loved my daughter’s father. We had planned to get married after our daughter was born, but, as you can see, things didn’t quite work out.

I’m working evenings at a nice restaurant and I make decent money.

My mother cares for the baby when I’m working. She is a wonderful babysitter.

One of the owners of the restaurant where I work is a young guy 27 years old. I have gone out with him at least 20 times. He treats me well and I enjoy going out with him. He has a nice apartment and has invited me to move in with him. He said that I could sleep at his apartment after work and that in the morning I could return to my house and be with my daughter until I go to work in the evening.

If he had asked me to marry him and told me that he would support my daughter and me, I might have said yes. I don’t love him, but I do like him and I might be able to love him in time.

Dad died five months ago from lung cancer.

He started smoking when he was 28, and was diagnosed as having lung cancer this past spring. I begged and pleaded with him to quit smoking for good, but he couldn’t. He kept telling me that he only had one bad habit and that it wouldn’t kill him. Dad died six weeks after the doctor told him that he had lung cancer.

Watching my father die was almost more than I could bear. He was only 49 when his life was snatched away from us. I miss my father very much.

Teens, your parents and loved ones are much too precious to lose because of a silly habit.

Don’t ever stop nagging, pleading, cajoling and begging Mom and Dad to quit if they are smokers.

By ROGER CATLIN The Washington Post BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA – After years of sticking its logo on all manner of T-shirts, dolls, drinkware and accessories, the rock band Kiss has stamped it on an entire arena football team as well.

And the creation of the Los Angeles Kiss Arena Football League team did not go undocumented. So, a reality show about the effort, “4th and Loud,” premieres Aug. 12 on AMC. It wasn’t crass commercialism that motivated the fire-breathing band, though.

The band’s irrepressible Gene Simmons, he of the tongue and blood-spitting, says he was filling a civic need.

“Los Angeles is the No. 1 media city in America and it doesn’t have football?” he asked rhetorically in a Beverly Hills hotel restaurant where he was doing promotion for the reality show. “You’re kidding me. So, opportunity knocks, you answer the door and you give people bang for the buck.”

That bang includes, he says, the blasting brand of hard rock that put the still-active band on the map 40 years ago and more. “We have guys who rappel from the ceiling, we have extreme bikers, rock bands, pyrotechnics, girls in cages,” he says.

Looking somewhat more subdued out of his kabuki makeup, studded

codpiece and the seven-inch platform boots he wears on stage, Simmons, in a dark suit and sunglasses, with a red rose he plucked from a hotel lobby display, resembled at 64 a dour mob boss or wizened tribal chief, his scowling face framed by the jet black hair.

With band co-founder Paul Stanley, 62, adorned with a flowing scarf and an open shirt, the pair came to sell the TV critics’ press tour on the show, just as they sell their catalog of songs to audiences on stages worldwide.

“We wanted to create something that was very much keeping with Kiss,” says Stanley, who began his spiel with a vulgar joke that landed with a thud. “We want to envelop you and pummel you.”

The show-biz aspect is something natural to sports, Simmons says. “A long time ago, people figured out in boxing that it wasn’t just about the boxing; they put girls up there carrying the [round] numbers out there.

Who gets the biggest hand, the boxers or the girl carrying the number?”

Further, “A lot of the cheerleaders that teams have have become rather sexless,” Stanley says. “We wanted to have girls who were women.”

One might expect Kiss to go sleazy – into Lingerie Football League territory, perhaps – or even bigger, since Los Angeles does not have a National Football League team. But that would take years, if it happened at all, Simmons says.

Creating an AFL team was easier.

“Eight or nine months ago, there was no L.A. Kiss – that’s how fast it happened,” he says.

And from the beginning, reality-TV cameras were part of the proposition.

“Sure. It takes the same amount to make cents as it does dollars,” Simmons says. “So, if you’re going to do something, go big or go home.

We don’t do anything small. Whether it’s our shows, our licensing and merchandising, our restaurant chain, whatever it is, you got to do big.”

Simmons, of course, is a reality veteran who invited cameras into his home for seven seasons of “Gene Simmons Family Jewels,” amassing 156 episodes. “I Love Lucy,’ he notes dryly, “lasted 145.” (His statistics are wrong; it did more).

For Stanley, the 10-episode reality show seemed more of a nightmare.

“You either have reality or you have television, and you sacrifice reality to create reality television,” he says. “Life’s too short to assume a fake life in place of your real one.”

He calls “4th and Loud” more of a documentary. “The fact of the matter is, the show is not built around us,” he says. “You are going to meet some very, very interesting characters and stars in their own right that we want to come to the forefront.”
