Local boys who lost home to tornado raise money for friends If you go

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Summertime and lemonade stands go hand in hand as children set up roadside stands to make a little extra money, either for themselves or a cause close to their heart.

Nolan Berger, 11, and his brother, Gavin, 7, of Coal City decided the longtime tradition would be a good way to raise money not only for themselves, but also Nolan’s Coal City Chaos 11U baseball team members who also lost their homes in the June 23 Coal City tornado like they did.

“I did it because I feel bad,” Nolan said. “Josh can’t even get to his room.”

Kenny and Tiffany Berger, Nolan and Gavin’s parents, lost the home they were renting in Coal City. Kenny Berger was trapped underneath the house as the tornado ravished their neighborhood.

Nolan attempted Monday a lemonade stand near Park Pointe Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center on Edgewater Drive in Morris but rain caused them to close up shop.

“The first day he said he wanted to make lemonade and after 20 minutes it started raining,” his grandmother, Linda Spiezio, said Wednesday. “So yesterday he wanted to do it again.”

Nolan enlisted the help of his brother, Gavin, and Nicholas Perry, 9, of Morris, who lives across the street from his grandparents, where the Berger family is now staying.

Nolan said woman stopped

by Tuesday to see what she was doing, and made them a sign and posted their stand to her Facebook page once she found out they were selling lemonade to raise money because their home was destroyed.

“She was telling everyone to come there,” Nolan said.

“There must have been 100 people.”

Gavin, who will enter second grade in the fall, said helping others feels good.

Tiffany Berger, Nolan and Gavin’s mom, said the boys kept calling Tuesday asking for more lemonade.

“They called and asked us to come get the money,” Tiffany Berger said, noting the boys didn’t feel safe having so much at the stand. “They said, ‘The first lady gave us everything she had.’ It was amazing.”

The boys went through five containers of lemonade and all the cookies they had, and raised about $500.

Nolan said one woman told him that the $100 she gave was for him to get a new baseball bag to replace the one he lost when his house was destroyed.

The boys were so excited with the response they decided to hold at least one more lemonade stand. They intend to be in the parking lot at the corner of Route 47 and Chapin Street across from the Morris Municipal Services Facility from 9 a.m. to noon Friday.

“I have a real entrepreneur here,” Tiffany Berger said.

This isn’t Nolan’s first business. Before the tornado hit their home, Nolan had more than $300 saved in his dresser drawer from doing lawn work. A neighbor found

and returned $20 found in their backyard, but the rest remains lost.

Village update

Coal City Police Sgt. Tom Logan said clean-up efforts continue to progress throughout the village. All checkpoints are set to open Thursday, he said, and the village’s police department and auxiliary police will continue to do roving patrols in the area.

Logan said the patrol will remain heavy because there have been unauthorized scrappers in the area.

Clean-up efforts will continue through Saturday, with crews focusing on removing debris between sidewalks and the street.

Donations

As of Wednesday, Julie Buck, executive director of Community Foundation of Grundy County, said $46,000 has been received in donations to the tornado relief fund formed by the foundation. Donations can be made at www.cfgrundycounty.com.

Just more than $24,000 of that came in the form of donations ranging from $5 to $500 from donors throughout Illinois as well as several other states including Texas, New York and Washington.

“We keep getting corporate phone calls to fill out pa-

perwork so they can donate,” Buck said. “We will meet with Mayor [Terry] Halliday next week to decide how to distribute the funds.”

People with disabilities impacted by government shutdown

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – As a single mother with two children with special needs, Stephanie Austin relies heavily on the state’s subsidized child care program – which, thanks to the budget impasse in Springfield, is now without funding.

Austin said she’ll be “in a tough spot” if the state government shutdown that started Wednesday – brought on by an intense political feud in Springfield between Gov. Bruce Rauner and a Democrat-controlled Legislature – continues for too long.

“Their father disappeared years ago. I’m estranged from my family. I don’t have a mom to call to just drop off my kids,” Austin said. “And there’s no way I could afford the full price of daycare.”

A long-term government shutdown would lead to a devastating domino effect on the vital human services provided by nonprofits and social services agencies, she said. If it wasn’t for her son, Bennett, who has developmental delays, entering the state’s Early Intervention program at 18 months old, he would be further behind intellectually.

“If you want to save money, save them now,” Austin said.

Without adequate state funding, day care centers, child care providers, and a wide range of organizations that provide human and social services statewide are at risk of closure and layoffs.

Hanging in the balance

Services for a small fraction of people with disabilities will

continue thanks to a judge’s recent order requiring Illinois to continue to fund services related to previous lawsuits filed against the state – including Ligas v. Norwood – that resulted in consent decrees.

The order was entered Tuesday in response to an emergency motion by Equip for Equality and the American Civil Liberties Union seeking the

continued funding.

Barry Taylor, vice president for civil rights and systemic litigation with Equip for Equality, said the consent decree in the Ligas case covers people with developmental disabilities living in state-funded facilities seeking to move into the community. It also covers people who have developmental disabilities and are living in

the family home seeking community services.

The order does provide the state comptrollers’ office the legal authority to provide funding for these services without a budget intact, said Veronica Vera, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Human Services.

But only a small fraction of the population is protected by the judge’s order. For example, Rauner’s proposed fiscal 2016 budget includes $1.287 billion for state services relating to people with developmental disabilities, while only $113 million – or about 8.7 percent – has been set aside for those protected under the Ligas lawsuit.

Laurie Jerue, a Naperville mother whose 26-year-old daughter with severe autism is protected under the consent decree, said she’s still concerned about what the budget impasse means for service providers reliant on state funding. “[My daughter] and others are still at risk if agencies have to shut their doors because they cannot make payroll overall,” Jerue said. “It’s a proverbial Catch-22. … You’re deemed eligible and awarded money to pay for services but can find no one to provide them to you.”

1-month budget plan fails in House, battle continues

By SARA BURNETT and JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – A spending plan allowing Illinois to limp through the month while a long-term budget battle rages failed in the House on Wednesday and hopes for a temporary fix dimmed even before facing an almost certain veto by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The Democratic-controlled Legislature and the Republican governor have been unable to reach agreement on a budget for the new fiscal year that began Wednesday. So Democrats attempted to keep “essential services” moving, such as operating veterans’ homes, child care and police protection, with a $2.3 billion, one-month stopgap. The Senate endorsed the plan. In the

House, it needed 71 votes but fell four short.

“My goal is to avoid a shutdown of core, critical services,” House Speaker Michael Madigan said in a statement as his chamber adjourned until next week. “I believe that should be the top priority of the governor and the Legislature at this moment.”

Rauner, entering his seventh month in the top spot, has

insisted that before negotiating a budget with Democrats, they must approve overhauls to make Illinois more business-friendly and less susceptible to political corruption.

Democrats said the ideas, such as restricting lawsuits and payments to injured workers, freezing property taxes and term limits for politicians, are unrelated to state spending and want him to help find money to

close a $4 billion gap in the $36 billion budget Rauner vetoed last week.

Short of that, they looked for help to keep the lights on in state government in a maneuver used several times in the past decade.

District 210 might need more than one solution Lincoln-Way parents call for more transparency

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Sandy Plourde is concerned what might happen to her children and others who attend Lincoln-Way High School District 210 if one of the schools close.

Plourde expressed those concerns at Lincoln-Way Central High School Wednesday to school board members and hundreds of other residents.

School officials held a special meeting to give the public an update about their dire financial situation and potential solutions.

Some of them include a tax increase referendum, cutting the curriculum and closing a school. The last option had Plourde wondering how this might impact the bonds students develop throughout their high school years.

“The community needs to be taken into consideration.

I hope that if you do have to close a school, that the seniors, the class of 2017, would be allowed to stay in their home school and be allowed to graduate with their friends,” she said.

Lincoln-Way Superintendent Scott Tingley said at the meeting that deciding on only one solution may not be enough to drag the school district out of its budget deficit.

The school district needs to decide on a deficit reduction plan by September. State education officials have recommended closing two schools if Lincoln-Way is unable to come up with a plan.

Two board members seemed in favor of closing a school.

Board member Christopher McFadden said if the tax increase referendum school officials floated would be passed, it wouldn’t be enough to guarantee keeping one of the schools open.

“I don’t see a good way out of this other than to close one of the four high schools,” McFadden said.

Board member Christine Glatz agreed with McFadden, saying unfortunately closing a school might be the best option.

Board President Kevin Molloy insisted Wednesday that no financial solution will be decided just yet. He said a decision may be made in 30 to 60 days in an open session meeting.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, more than a dozen parents, residents

and students spoke at the podium, even after public comment was finished. Some advocated for the tax referendum while others were in favor of closing a school Others said school officials must consolidate staff. Some speakers demanded more transparency, as well as bring in a consulting firm to decide which school should close.

Samantha Nekola, a Lincoln-Way graduate with a younger sister who attends a high school, was disappointed by the meeting.

“What I witnessed tonight was a persuasive essay in the form of a PowerPoint. A PowerPoint followed by crossed arms, shaking heads and rolled eyes. … I must say I’m disappointed in the negative body language,” she said.

Bob Gordon, a 20-year Lincoln-Way resident, said a past referendum where Lincoln-Way wanted to construct more schools, school officials sold the public on smaller classes and more extracurricular opportunities. Now, they’re promoting larger class sizes.

He said the construction of newer high schools were based on projections, which now proved to be wrong. Now school leaders are basing their current solutions on projections as well, he said.

“Let’s make sure these projections are right,” Gordon said.

Romeoville fire station rebuild approved

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The Romeoville Fire Station 1 has not seen major renovations since the mid-1980s, Fire Chief Kent Adams said.

Today, the fire station’s walls are deteriorating, paint is chipping in flakes from the roof and the concrete is cracking, Adams said.

The Village Board Wednesday night approved demolition of the fire station at 18 Montrose Drive, and architectural and construction services for the building of a new one in its place.

“I mean, it was pretty much a pole barn when it was built,” Adams said. “We were eventually going to need a new station.”

Oakbrook Terrace-based Robinette Demolition Inc. was hired to demolish the fire station for $103,400. Elgin-based Dewberry Architects received a contract not to exceed $66,212. And a contract not to exceed $3 million was awarded to Downers Grove-based Corporate Construction Services.

“There is no doubt that Fire Department 1 needs to be replaced,” Mayor John Noak said.

Assistant Village Manager Dawn Caldwell said the village has been discussing the reconstruction or renovation of the fire station for several years.

“We did a lot of research on the existing building,” Caldwell said. “It made sense, due to the amount of work needed on that building, to construct a new building.”

Noak said that the project will be paid by village funds saved over the years while the project was being discussed.

Necessary emergency services will be moved to an industrial space a block away on the east side of Montrose Drive while the fire station construction is taking place,

Adams said.

The fire engine and ambulance will be housed in the temporary location along with four people. Other services and personnel, including administration, will work out of Village Hall or Fire Station 3.

“Station 1 is our busiest station,” Adams said. “Most of our calls are in that area. So we didn’t want to under-serve that area while this is being done.”

Fire, police awards

The American Legion Post 52 honored two Romeoville firefighters and a Romeoville police officer with 2014 awards Wednesday.

Bradley Olson won Firefighter of the Year, Seth Meyers won EMT of the Year and police officer John Allen won Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

Allen and K9 officer Spike, a Belgian malinois, have been credited with finding Erick Maya, a man who had killed his ex-girlfriend and wounded her mother in February 2014, hiding under a back deck a few blocks away. Maya was convicted of murder in September.

The two also helped in several drug investigations and rescue operations throughout the year.

The Romeoville Fire Department gave out its Firefighter of the Year and EMT of the Year awards to Olson and Meyers as well. Also, resident Alejandra Herrea was awarded the Civilian Medal of Valor for helping get her family members out of their Evergreen Court home when it caught fire on April 19.

AAA forecasts highest travel numbers since 2007

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com Americans will travel this Fourth of July holiday weekend in numbers not seen since 2007 – thanks in part to growing income and falling gas prices, AAA predicts.

Those staying overnight, however, are likely to find higher hotel rates than a year ago, according to AAA. Those staying closer to home can find things do on day trips or local outings to see fireworks, according to the Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau, a state travel bureau that covers an area running through Will and Grundy counties as well as Starved Rock State Park.

“Our skies are going to be lit up,” said Mary Beth DeGrush, vice president with the Heritage Corridor bureau.

She said many communities through Will and Grundy counties will have fireworks displays.

Many people are heading out of town, too, according to AAA’s travel forecast.

The Independence Day holiday travel period began Wednesday and ends Sunday,

AAA said.

Throughout the country, 41.9 million Americans will take trips of 50 miles or more, AAA said. That number is up 0.7 percent from a year ago and is the highest since the pre-recession year of 2007.

Independence Day travel follows heavy travel during the Memorial Day weekend as well.

“It’s been the highest number of travelers we’ve seen in a number of years for both

holidays,” AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher said.

A strong job market and declining gas prices were given as reasons for the growth in travel.

Gas prices in Illinois average $2.94 a gallon, down from $3.88 during the Fourth of July weekend of 2014, according to AAA. About 2.3 million people will travel in Illinois, a 0.4 percent increase from 2014, AAA said. Of those, 2 million will

drive and 104,000 will fly.

Gas prices for Independence Day are at their lowest levels in at least five years, according to AAA. Nearly 85 percent of holiday travelers nationwide will drive. About 1.5 percent will fly. Less than 1 percent will take cruises, trains or buses, AAA said.

While it may be cheaper to drive there this year, it will be more expensive to stay.

The AAA Leisure Travel Index lists the average nightly stay at a “two diamond” hotel as 6 percent higher from a year ago at $145. AAA rates hotels on a scale of one diamond to five diamonds with five being the highest. The average stay at a three diamond hotel is up 9 percent at $195.

Mosher said the growth in travel and demand for hotel rooms is driving up hotel rates.

DeGrush at the Heritage Corridor bureau said Starved Rock State Park is always one of the more popular destinations in the corridor. For those staying overnight at the Starved Rock Lodge, there will be live music at the Back Door Lounge the night of July 4.

In Joliet, fireworks enthusiasts will have the option of a Joliet Slammers game on Thursday, which will include a fireworks show, and the fireworks Saturday at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The chances of buying a phony ticket for a show at the Rialto Square Theatre or other Illinois theaters should go down with a new law sent to the governor this week.

The Rialto and other theaters have sought an amendment for the past two years in the Ticket Sale and Resale Act. That amendment was passed with no opposing votes in both the Illinois House and Senate, and sent Monday to Gov. Bruce Rauner to be signed.

“I am not aware of any opponents to it,” Rialto General Manager Randy Green said.

The amendment was put on hold a year ago when legitimate third-party brokers objected to it as being too sweeping.

Green said a fraudulent environment exists now in which third-party brokers can create websites that make them look like the theater putting on the show and set ticket prices much higher than what they are selling for at the box office.

Rauner’s office on Wednesday did not respond to a request for comment on the governor’s intentions for House

Bill 3103, the amendment to the Ticket Sale and Resale Act. Assuming the bill becomes law, theaters then will need to be vigilant to see that it is enforced, Green said.

“I think we need to be very aggressive in monitoring this to make sure they [brokers and re-sellers] comply,” Green said.

He said certain websites posing as theater venues have similar characteristics.

“It’s certainly a very deliberately conceived business out there that’s trying to rip off consumers and take advantage of their naivete,” he said.

Local state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, and state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, were chief co-sponsors of the bill in the House and Senate.

“We want people to have a good experience at the Rialto,” McGuire said.

Officers located cocaine, cannabis, drug equipment

JOLIET – The widow of a Manhattan man has sued a Symerton tavern he was at before his fatal crash.

Daryl Mulcahy claims the staff of Anson’s Pub was negligent in returning Terrence Mulcahy’s car keys while he was intoxicated, according to a lawsuit filed June 22 in Will County Court.

Mulcahy’s body was discovered Jan. 25 in a field a quarter-mile north of South Arsenal and South Martin Long roads in Wilmington Township. His damaged car had been towed from Arsenal Road earlier, according to

Will County Sheriff’s police.

An autopsy showed Mulcahy suffered head injuries consistent with a car crash and showed signs of cold exposure.

Police said Mulcahy told his daughter during a phone call two nights earlier that he was going to Anson’s.

“Terrence Mulcahy became visibly intoxicated as a result of consuming alcohol at Anson’s Pub,” the suit, filed by attorney Gregory Leiter, claimed. “Anson’s Pub [staff] voluntarily took possession or control of [Mulcahy’s] car keys during the course of him becoming intoxicated.” “[But] once [Mulcahy]

Police: Lockport man drops gun as deputies chase him

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – A man allegedly dropped a handgun while fleeing from police Tuesday night.

Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies were on routine patrol at 9:30 p.m. when they saw a Chevy Impala run through a stop sign at Central Park Place and Riley Avenue. The deputies had the vehicle pull over and cited Quindon Gray, 19, of the 1300 block of Arthur Avenue in Joliet for disobeying a stop sign.

While deputies spoke with Gray’s three passengers, Deamontae T. Hunter, 18, was asked to get out of the car be-

cause he was mumbling his answers, Hoffmeyer said.

“After exiting the vehicle, Hunter took off running and was observed dropping a loaded .45-caliber handgun [before he] was caught by deputies,” Hoffmeyer said.

JOLIET – A man was arrested Tuesday after police reportedly found cocaine and marijuana in his apartment.

The alleged dealer, Marcus D. Jones, 33, had been under investigation by the Narcotics Unit and Neighborhood Oriented Policing Team, according to Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.

Gregory said five other people were with Jones when a search warrant was executed about 2 p.m. in the 400 block of South Joliet Street.

“Officers located cocaine, packaged cannabis, a digital scale and other drug equip-

ment in the apartment,” Gregory said.

Jones was booked into the Will County Jail on charges of delivery of drugs, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Marcus court records, Jones was inD. Jones dicted on drug delivery charges in January after an investigation by the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad. Jones had posted $20,000 bond in that case and had been offered a plea deal at his court appearance last week.

Her daughter, Sarah Jerue, is scheduled to start receiving residential home care July 13, but Jerue is concerned about her daughter’s future.

Her daughter is nonverbal and relies on a strict routine throughout the week. Laurie Jerue, 57, said both she and her husband are aging and simply can’t continue around-theclock care.

“We do have a lot of love for her. And she will continue to have our support. The problem is we’re getting older. I just can’t do it anymore. I physically, and mentally, can’t do it anymore,” Laurie Jerue said.

Kimberly Gamboney of Plainfield said her son, Joseph, is graduating from the state’s Early Intervention program in September. She said it pains her to think what would happen to others’ children if service providers had to shut down.

“He wasn’t speaking. He was not eating up to par. He couldn’t hold a pen,” Gamboney said. “Now, he’s experimenting with word approximations, he’s more social. He’s walking, crawling, jumping and singing, just like any normal child.”

“But ladies and gentleman, we’re not talking about statistics, and this is not an abstract thing that we are doing here today,” Franks said. “These are real people that, if we don’t provide them with the resources they need, real people are going to suffer.”

Officials are unclear how quickly state services will wind down. There is money to pay employees through mid-month, but some vendors providing social services may start scaling back because there’s no authority to pay them.

The temporary budget could still be resurrected because the Senate approved a separate but identical plan 37-0. Eleven Republicans voted “present” and nine didn’t vote. It is possible Madigan, a Chicago Democrat, could persuade four more lawmakers to endorse the initiative to get it approved when the

House returns Wednesday.

But even then, Rauner calls it unconstitutional because it is not a balanced budget. Over a full year, it would create the same $4 billion deficit Democrats proposed earlier, according to a letter Wednesday from Rauner budget director Tim Nuding, who said it “marches the taxpayers of Illinois toward an unbalanced budget one month at a time.”

Rep. Margo McDermed, a first-term Republican from Mokena, voiced the exasperation of taxpayers statewide in a plea to both sides to skip the shortterm fix and talk.

“What’s the matter with us, that we’re unable to have a discussion, as adults, where we’re all invited to the table, and actually make decisions about dividing up the money?”

McDermed said.

Without Republican support, a Rauner veto of the bill would be tough to overcome because a legislative override would need 71 House and 36 Senate votes.

Campers find time capsule from 2005

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – It was a hunt 10 years in the making: New Lenox campers this week dug up a time capsule that was supposed to be found the year after it was buried.

Tuesday marked the first day the time capsule saw sunlight since Aug. 4, 2005.

Campers and counselors at Camp Wewannago unearthed the capsule, which contained several items, including a letter from then-9-year-old Patsy Clare – who now is a sophomore in college and is a counselor at the camp.

“It was the craziest thing, because it was so long ago,” she said Thursday.

Other items in the capsule included a sunshine symbol object, a bead bracelet, a Class of 2005 graduation balloon and a note for favorite counselor Tyler Buck, a former day camp assistant. It also included a Band-Aid that represented a long-ago injury to the nose (caused by a bucket) of Jenny Bendy, who now is a Camp Wewannago leader but 10 years ago was a camp assistant.

“I didn’t remember what most of the things were,” Bendy said. “Opening it up was very, very exciting.”

The capsule was buried on the last day of camp by former staff member Kim Kulovitz,

After it was buried, people forgot where it was located.

“They were actually planning on digging it up a year later but unfortunately … every year they tried to find it and they hadn’t been able to find it,” Lotz said. “… After years went by, they sort of gave up, but there was sort of a renewal this year to try to find it.”

In Clare’s letter, she described placing her Teddy bear in the capsule and how much she was going to miss him, park officials said. In the letter, Clare stated, “Teddy is just so special to me. He is the one that I talk to. I will miss him.”

The letter had an asterisk, stating “Don’t worry Patsy ...

You’ll see him next summer!”

Bendy said the campers are excited to do another time capsule project.

“That seemed to be the obvious choice.”

The project creates an ADA-accessible path from the parking lot in the south end of Four Seasons Park to between the two football fields. Two concrete paths also are being constructed for viewing.

Park District Executive Director Carlo Capalbo said the project is almost done. The total cost is expected to be about $42,000 after the park district also decided to contribute.

“We’ve hit a snag because of the weather,” Capalbo said, noting that concrete has been laid and all that’s left is the asphalt path. “We need two or three dry days and we haven’t had that.”

The alliance formed from a group of residents, “Park Truth,” who protested and helped ouster the previous regime at the Plainfield Township Park District.

Polito said the alliance raised about $3,200 through a fundraiser events and donations to help elect park district commissioners Larry Newton, Mary Kay Ludemann, Rob Ayres and Ridgley Ann “Mimi” Poling so they can retain their state-appointed seats.

The two main expenses of the campaign were mailers and yard signs, Polito said.

Polito said the alliance will be going dormant but has the ability to quickly start up if members feel a need to continue advocating for specific candidates in the 2017 elections.

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Park District Alliance political action committee has given the remainder of its campaign funds to a park district project started by a local high schooler.

Vicky Polito, treasurer for the alliance, said the alliance is donating $200.96 to the Friends of the Plainfield Township Park District Foundation to help fund an Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility project at Four Seasons Park.

The project was started by Plainfield North High School junior Emily Brooks, who raised about $8,000 herself and secured donations of $7,000 from the Plainfield Lions Club.

While it was a drop in the bucket compared to the amount raised by Brooks, Polito said the alliance’s donation fit the group’s mission.

1909, to parents of German Jewish descent, Winton himself was raised as a Christian.

Late in 1938, a friend contacted him and told him to cancel the skiing holiday they had planned and travel instead to Czechoslovakia.

Alarmed by the influx of refugees from the Sudetenland region recently annexed

by Germany, Winton and his friend feared – correctly – that Czechoslovakia soon would be invaded by the Nazis and that its Jewish residents would be sent to concentration camps.

While some in Britain were working to get Jewish intellectuals and communists out of Czechoslovakia, no one was trying to save the children – so Winton took that task upon himself.

Returning to Britain, Winton persuaded British officials to accept children, as long as foster homes were found and a 50-pound guarantee was paid for each one to ensure they had enough money to return home later. At the time, their stays were only expected to be temporary.

Setting himself up as the one-man children’s section of the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia, Winton set about finding homes and guarantors, drawing up lists of about 6,000 children, publishing pictures to encourage British families to agree to take them.

The first 20 children arrived by plane, but once the Ger-

man army reached Prague in March 1939, they could only be brought out by train.

In the months before the outbreak of World War II, eight trains carried children from Czechoslovakia through Germany to Britain. In all, Winton got 669 children out.

The largest evacuation was scheduled for Sept. 3, 1939 – the day that Britain declared war on Germany. That train never left, and almost none of the 250 children trying to flee on it survived the war.

The children from Prague were among some 10,000 mostly Jewish children who made it to Britain on what were known as the Kindertransports (children’s transports).

Few of them would see their parents again.

Although many more Jewish children were saved from Berlin and Vienna, those operations were better organized and better financed. Winton’s operation was unique because he worked almost alone.

“Maybe a lot more could have been done. But much more time would have been needed, much more help would have been needed from other countries, much more money would have been needed, much more organization,” Winton later said.

He also acknowledged that not all the children who made it to Britain were well-treated in their foster homes – sometimes they were used as cheap domestic servants.

JACKSON, Miss. – A son of legendary Mississippi blues artist Robert Johnson became rich by winning a court fight over his father’s estate. But even when finances were no longer a concern, an attorney said Claud Johnson kept the gravel truck he had driven for years – a reminder of the hard work that guided his own life.

Claud Johnson was 83 when he died Tuesday, said John Kitchens, who represented him in the extended legal battle over the estate of Robert Johnson.

The Mississippi Supreme Court ruled in early 2014 that Claud Johnson could keep the profits from the only two known photographs of his father. Legend has it that Robert Johnson, who wrote “Me and the Devil Blues” and “Crossroads Blues,” sold his soul to the devil for his talent.

Robert Johnson did not leave a will when he died in 1938 at age 27. He was destitute, but his estate later made millions. A collection of his recordings won a Grammy in 1990, and the album cover featured one of the two known photos of the lanky Johnson, wearing a suit and holding his guitar.

A court declared Claud Johnson the musician’s sole heir in 1998. Other relatives sued him in 2000, but the state Supreme Court ruled in 2014 that the lawsuit had been filed too late.

Claud Johnson had worked several jobs, including as barbecue restaurant owner in early adulthood and as a painter for an electric company and a gravel truck driver in later years, Kitchens said.

“Even before he inherited his father’s estate, he would buy lots of fruits and nuts and put them in baskets and deliver them to elderly homebound people in the community,” Kitchens said Tuesday.

“The only real change after was that his list grew bigger and the baskets were larger.”

Kitchens said one of Claud Johnson’s sons sent him a text early Tuesday to say his father had passed away.

Kitchens said he didn’t know whether Johnson, who had struggled with diabetes and other health problems, died in a hospital or at home in the small town of Crystal Springs, Mississippi.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete Tuesday.

Claud Johnson’s wife of 60 years, Earnestine, died about two years ago. The couple had six children, Kitchens said.

LONDON – He was just a 29-year-old clerk at the London Stock Exchange when he faced the challenge of a lifetime. Traveling with a friend to Czechoslovakia in 1938, as the drums of impending war echoed around Europe, Nicholas Winton was hit by a key realization.

The country was in danger and no one was saving its Jewish children.

Winton would almost single-handedly save more than 650 Jewish children from the Holocaust, earning himself the label “Britain’s Schindler.” He died Wednesday at age 106 in a hospital near Maidenhead, his hometown west of London, his family said.

Winton arranged trains to carry children from Nazi-occupied Prague to Britain, battling bureaucracy at both ends and saving them from almost certain death. He then kept quiet about his exploits for a half-century.

His daughter, Barbara, said she hoped her father would be remembered for his wicked sense of humor and charity work as well as his wartime heroism. And she hoped his legacy would be inspiring people to believe that even difficult things were possible.

“He believed that if there was something that needed to be done you should do it,” she said. “Let’s not spend too long agonizing about stuff. Let’s get it done.”

British Prime Minister David Cameron said “the world has lost a great man.” Jonathan Sacks, Britain’s former chief rabbi, said Winton “was a giant of moral courage and determination, and he will be mourned

by Jewish people around the world.”

In Israel, President Reuven Rivlin said Winton will be remembered as a hero from “those darkest of times.” “[He] was a man who valued human life above all else, and there are those who are alive today who are testament to his dedication and sacrifice,” Rivlin said.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois state officials wants to remind commercial motor vehicle operators starting Wednesday there are

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s office said his office has worked to communicate with CDL holders and the trucking industry about the new federal rules. He said the Mid-West Truckers Association and the Illinois Trucking Association also helped.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration enacted the changes.

The secretary of state’s office said drivers can get detailed information about the changes and new requirements at CDL facilities, at the office’s website or by calling the Illinois CDL Help Desk at 217-785-3108.

Bradley University center signs Canadian deal

PEORIA – Bradley University said a new trade agreement signed by a business center on campus and a similar organization in Winnipeg, Canada, will open up new areas for cooperation between industries in the two areas.

The deal between the Illinois SBDC International Trade Center at Bradley and the World Trade Centre Winnipeg is intended to open up export opportunities for businesses in both areas and ease collaboration between universities and people involved in startups.

The deal is part of a U.S. State Department initiative to develop closer ties between small businesses in the Americas.

Jim Foley is director at the International Trade Center at Bradley. He said in a news release Tuesday that the deal also could create student and faculty exchanges for Bradley and links for entrepreneurs in the cities.

Kraft shareholders approve sale of company to Heinz

NORTHFIELD – Kraft shareholders have approved the sale of the company to ketchup maker H.J. Heinz, creating one of the world’s largest food companies with annual revenue of about $28 billion.

Heinz’ owners, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and the Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital engineered the deal, first announced in March, and will control 51 percent of the new Kraft Heinz Co. The combined company will have in its stable brands that, in addition to Kraft and Heinz, Jell-O, Oscar Mayer, Velveeta and Ore-Ida. In May Buffett said during an appearance on CNBC that Coca-Cola, Heinz and other companies will respond to a shift in the U.S. to healthier foods, but predicted that the appetite for long-time favorites made by Kraft and Heinz will not fade.

Berkshire Hathaway is the biggest shareholder in Coca-Cola.

Kraft shareholders will receive stock in the combined company and a special cash dividend of approximately $10 billion, or $16.50 per share. Each share of Kraft will be converted into one share of the new The Kraft Heinz Co. Kraft Foods Group Inc. is based in Northfield, and H.J. Heinz Holding Corp. is based in Pittsburgh.

The transaction will close on Thursday.

The new company will be listed under the ticker symbol “KHC” on the Nasdaq.

By CARLA K. JOHNSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – With the number of Illinois medical marijuana patients inching slowly upward to 2,600 on Wednesday, the state’s licensed growers are fine-tuning their models to get the right number of plants in the ground.

At least one company hopes to have marijuana growing this summer. Others are still months away from planting.

They’re all tracking the official patient total with interest and trepidation.

“They’re watching it like a

hawk,” said David Friedman, CEO of Chicago-based MJIC Media, which covers the industry for investors. “It’s a huge indication for them” of future paying customers and revenue.

“All we can do is produce the best product we can and stay focused on that,” said Emily Wilcox, a spokeswoman for In Grown Farms, which has scheduled city and state inspections this month of its cultivation center in Freeport. “To us the biggest thing is figuring out who the patients are and where they are.”

In June, Illinois sent about 100 approval letters to patients

who qualify to use marijuana, bringing the total to 2,600, the Illinois Department of Public Health said. About 22,600 people have started the application process on the program’s website. Of those, only about 3,200 have submitted a complete application, 100 more than last month.

The low numbers may be related to patient complaints about a fingerprint-based background check requirement.

Some patients are waiting to see if the long-delayed program gets off the ground before paying a $100 fee. Some doctors want to see more scientific ev-

idence before agreeing to sign a required form.

The flat numbers fall short – by a factor of 10 to 15 – of figures used in financial models companies relied on as they applied for cultivation permits, said Friedman, who did some of that modeling through another business venture, CFO Worldwide. The models predicted revenues starting around July 1, he said, which hasn’t happened.

“They’re not even close,” Friedman said, of the Illinois industry. “I think it’s in jeopardy. There’s cause for concern.”

He said that Illinois patient numbers are far ahead of Minnesota, which kicked off sales in its medical cannabis program this week with only 65 registered patients.

“That puts it in perspective,” Bachtell said.

CHICAGO – Chicago school and city officials detailed $200 million in cuts – including layoffs, scaled-back maintenance and reduced transportation – to the nation’s third-largest school district Wednesday, one day after the district paid a $634 million pension bill officials said it couldn’t afford.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said schools would still open on time in the coming school year and class sizes wouldn’t be affected.

He put the blame on state legislators for worsening the situation and said a property tax increase was up for consideration.

The district had to borrow and factor in the cuts to make the pension payment by Tuesday’s deadline because legislators, deadlocked over a state budget themselves, rejected a proposal calling for an extension to give school officials more time to come up with a longer term solution.

The district will eliminate 1,400 jobs – including 350 vacant positions to go unfilled – but few teachers will be impacted, with layoff notices going out to support and central office staff, Chicago Public Schools Interim CEO Jesse Ruiz said.

However, the cuts will affect new teacher development programs, startup funding for new charter and alternative schools and elementary school sports teams and coaches. The district also will reduce funds for trans-

A state Senate committee did approve a bill Wednesday that contains some of Emanuel’s ideas for pension relief, but the measure also contains a two-year property tax freeze.

Word of the cuts triggered fresh concerns for teachers and students still reeling from school closures approved in 2013. The cuts could further exacerbate the icy relationship with the Chicago Teachers Union, which has argued that the district has actually beefed up spending in certain areas.

The union, which went on strike in 2012 for the first time in 25 years, recently walked away from the bargaining table after union officials said they were close to a deal.

“While much remains unclear,” CTU Vice President Jesse Sharkey said at a news conference, “it is clear that what cuts have been specified would do real damage to our schools.”

By BRUCE SMITH and RAY HENRY The Associated Press GREELEYVILLE, S.C. – The Rev. John Taylor feared the worst when he learned his church was on fire, only days after a mass shooting at a black church in Charleston prompted Southern leaders to call for removing Confederate flags.

The Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church was burned to the ground by the Ku Klux Klan in 1995, one of many arsons at black churches that prompted President Bill Clinton to create a federal task force that led to hundreds of arrests.

“Of course, we thought about it. We wouldn’t be human if we didn’t,” he said, standing in the hot sun outside the church’s charred shell on Wednesday. But Taylor also recalled the fierce lightning storm that blew through town about the time the fire began Tuesday night.

“I really thought it probably was a lightning strike is what I thought.”

Preliminary indications

suggest the Mount Zion fire was not the result of arson, according to a federal official who spoke with The Associated Press Wednesday on condition of anonymity, for lack of authority to discuss the case publicly.

More than a half-dozen fires at black churches have burned in the days since a white gunman was charged with murder in the shootings of nine black churchgoers in Charleston.

Investigators have determined that several were intentionally set, but have yet to announce any evidence of racial motives.

According to the best available national statistics, if these have been the only church fires happening recently, this would be a relatively safe time.

An average of 31 houses of worship burned every week from 2007 through 2011, according to a 2013 estimate by the National Fire Protection Association, which analyzed government data and survey results.

Among these, arson was

relatively rare: Just 16 percent of the estimated blazes at religious structures were intentionally set during the five-year period ending in 2011.

That means arsonists set fire to roughly five each week.

The figures include a small number of funeral homes and do not distinguish between predominantly white and black congregations.

Taylor, who is in his ninth year as the pastor of Mount Zion, said when he heard of the fire, he immediately recalled the blaze two decades ago, for which two KKK members served long prison sentences. Clinton himself came to dedicate the rebuilt church that burned down Tuesday night.

VIENNA – Iran has met a key commitment under a preliminary nuclear deal setting up the current talks on a final agreement, leaving it with several tons less of the material it could use to make weapons, according to a U.N. report issued Wednesday.

Obtained by The Associated Press, the confidential International Atomic Energy Agency report said more than four tons of the enriched uranium had been fed into a pipeline that ends with conversion of it into oxide, which is much less likely to be used to make nuclear arms.

The report indicated that only several hundred pounds of the oxide that is the end product had been made. But a U.S. official told the AP the rest of the enriched uranium in the pipeline has been transformed into another form of the oxide that would be even more difficult to reconvert into enriched uranium, which can be turned into the fissile core of nuclear arms.

The official said that technical problems by Iran had slowed the process but the United States was satisfied that Iran had met its commitments to reduce the amount of en-

riched uranium it has stored.

He demanded anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the confidential review process.

Iran’s meeting conditions of the preliminary deal is an important benchmark as the talks go into the final stage of talks on an agreement meant to put long-term caps on Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief of economic penalties.

Violations by Iran would complicate the Obama administration’s argument that U.S. negotiators are holding the line on demands for a verifiable deal that extends the time Iran would need to make a weapon to at least a year. Tehran said its nuclear program is meant only to fuel reactors and for other non-military purposes.

The report did not say where the rest of the material was. But it appeared to confirm the U.S. official’s description of the material being somewhere in the conversion line. That’s because the figures provided by the IAEA indicated that it was not added to Iran’s stockpile of low-enriched uranium.

Low-enriched uranium can be enriched further for weapons purposes. The interim accord capped Iran’s low-enriched uranium stockpile at 7.6 tons. If it went over that limit, it would have to convert the remainder into oxide.

The power of radical forgiveness The power of love recently on display in Charleston, South Carolina, has been stunning.

For a nation beset by hate in recent months, from one city to another, the blood shed there has led to something better.

What a deep reserve of love there must be among the family and friends of those murdered at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church that they forgive the man accused of killing their loved ones. This is the Christian way, and it is quite dazzling to behold.

Remember Pope St. John Paul II, saying this from Gemelli Hospital in Rome in May of 1981? “I pray for the brother who shot me and whom I sincerely pardoned.”

Where does this come from?

The kind of love that forgives what to any reasonable person would seem unforgivable?

It has something to do with freedom, and it’s worth reflecting on it as we approach another Independence Day. Across the pond, at Stonyhurst College in England, there resides a treasure trove of history that predates the United States, but, in many ways, is a part of our story. One of Stonyhurst’s many gems is a poem written by the Jesuit St. Edmund Campion, who was ultimately imprisoned in the Tower of London and martyred for refusing to renounce his Catholic faith. He probably never intended for his “Anima” to be read by others, so intimate a plea it is to his Savior. In the midst of terrible persecution and imminent pain, he wrote: “O where would I now be, Had Your Grace not rescued me from my loathsome failings, Filled me with a better light, And exchanged, for the eternal Fires of Hell, The holy fires of Love.”

See the tremendous depth of his gratitude? His very life is a gift. Everything is a gift. Evil isn’t senseless so much as it is a reality in our fallen world.

Pawns in a statewide chess game

The mighty struggle underway over the Illinois state budget is eerily similar to the game of chess. The comparison is both apt and sad.

The opponents are the entrenched Democrats, led by House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, versus firstyear Gov. Bruce Rauner and the minority Republicans.

They represent the kings, queens, knights, bishops and rooks on the chessboard.

And the 12.8 million other Illinoisans? Well, if you’ve ever felt like a pawn in the great budgetary battle, join the club.

In chess, pawns are manipulated to advance the interests of the major pieces.

Pawns don’t matter much in the grand scheme of things.

They are routinely imperiled and sacrificed to benefit the more powerful chess pieces.

Likewise, in the budget battle, average citizens are manipulated to advance the interests of the politicians. If the public is imperiled by budgetary proposals and brinksmanship, it’s no real concern

to the leadership class.

The object of chess is to use one’s intelligence and experience to defeat the opponent.

The same goes for politics, which unfortunately carries over into governance, and which is the crux of the budget battle: Will the state continue to live beyond its means, or not?

The budget approved by the Democrats would spend $3 billion to $4 billion more than it takes in. Democratic leaders did that on purpose to pressure Rauner to approve tax increases to cover the difference.

For his part, Rauner doesn’t like the chronic overspending, vetoed most of the budget, and awaits the arrival of Democrats at the bargaining table to negotiate for what he wants: some “pro-business” legislation and structural reforms to government that would weaken Democrats’ stranglehold on power.

Thus, we entered the new fiscal year Wednesday with no state spending plan in place.

What are the pawns’ roles

in all of this? Average Illinoisans have spoken up about how proposed budget cuts would negatively affect them.

Some have done so on their own; others have been trotted out by politicians. Either way, their stories are compelling.

Senior citizens, the poor, those with physical and mental disabilities, and others who rely on state funding are imperiled. The uncertainty is difficult to bear.

In chess, pawns do have one golden opportunity to triumph. If a pawn can advance to the end of the board, it wins a powerful promotion and gains great influence. The opposing player tries to stop that from happening at all costs.

In Illinois’ budgetary endgame, Illinoisans must put politicians in check and exert their combined influence to demand that fiscal prudence and the best interests of the people be part of the new budget.

For politicians who just don’t get it, the public can deal with them at the next election.

Checkmate.

Slammers held to four hits in loss

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – With their sixgame winning streaked snapped on Tuesday, the Joliet Slammers looked to get back to their winning ways in the second of a three-game series against Traverse City.

Both teams owned 7-3 records in their last 10 games, the best in the Frontier League, but Joliet wasn’t able to get bounce back against the Beach Bums and suffered a 3-1 defeat Wednesday before 1,000 fans at Silver Cross Field.

The first four innings saw a pitchers’ duel between both lefthanded starters. The Slammers’ Michael Carden allowed only a bunt single by Yazy Arbelo. Traverse City starter Ian MacDougall retired all 12 batters he faced and was backed up by some great defense by shortstop Sam Bumpers.

In the top of the fifth, Reggie Lawson recorded the second hit for the Beach Bums (27-12) on a grounder in the hole at shortstop. He was thrown out at second by Carden on the sacrifice bunt attempt by Greg Harisis.

Harisis then scored on a hard ground ball error, which bounced off Slammers first baseman, Nate Roberts’ glove, to give Traverse City a 1-0 lead. Carden got Bumpers to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Carden started for only the second time for the Slammers (18-22), having won his first start over Schaumburg on June 25. In that game, he pitched 5⅓ innings and gave up three runs on six hits.

Left fielder Phil Bates led off the Slammers fifth with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a ground out by Russell Moldenhauer, but was stranded at third after a line out to second by Alfredo Rodriguez and a ground out to the pitcher by Jake Cleary.

The Slammers tied the score in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Max Casper got an infield single to deep short. He then advanced to third, with two outs, on an errant pick-off attempt by

While his military days were through, the things that he learned there helped him as he started college again, this time at Western Illinois University.

“That experience really taught me a lot of things,” Strode said. “Not about me as a person, since that was instilled through my dad Mike Strode and my mom, but it taught me how to get through adversity, It told me that I could get through school and do things that were uncomfortable in life. I’m not Corporal Strode any more, but that intestinal fortitude stuff helped.

“When I was at Western, I had to work as a door guy since the G.I. Bill wasn’t cutting the mustard. The owner was the Senior Associate Athletic Director at Western, and he got me a job at the school. It was a great opportunity since I worked with the ticket people and did everything from making popcorn to security for football games. It was really a cool job.”

Strode enters his new role with the same type of approach that he’s used for years.

“I don’t think that I have all the answers since you figure things out all of the time in life,” Strode said. “I relate everything in my life as jobs and I’ve never had a job that I’ve done on my own. I’ve always relied upon people to help me in my jobs, and school is no different.

“It’s the rapport that you build up with people over time that lets them trust you and tells them that you’re out for their best interests. I was the youngest of four, so when people said things, I was like, ‘alright’. I remember my sister telling me to make sure to do good by others. I’ve felt that if you’re honest and do good by others, others will do good by you.”

The new athletic director pointed to the leadership of his predecessors in the district.

“When you talk about a footprint, that’s already here through people like Ernie Cimo, Larry Bernard and definitely Dennis Schley, who had a big impression on me, and Jim, who I’ve learned under for the last eight years-plus.

“All of those guys had different attitudes, but what they had in common, is that when they said something to someone, they meant it. They wanted to do good by others and wanted to make sure that people succeeded. So I plan on continuing that.”

While Strode hopes that the athletic fortunes improve for the Spartans in upcoming years, he also realizes that athletics boils down to more than just winning and losing games.

“Winning comes at different levels,” Strode said. “I’ve talked to many of our head coaches about how winning is when the kids exit our doors since many of them aren’t going on to play collegiate ball.

So they need to be good-hearted people who have intestinal fortitude.

“That’s our ultimate goal.

The successes on the field is what draws more kids in. so that is important, as well. Our coaches are believers in the individual person before the X’s and O’s, which will come. We haven’t been what we were in the 1980s and early 1990s. But in sports, there’s an ebb and flow and I believe that we are on the rise.”

Ex-Illinois women’s basketball players sue school, coach One of those players is Bolingbrook grad Tuck

By DAVID MERCER The Associated Press URBANA – Seven former University of Illinois women’s basketball players sued the university Wednesday, accusing coach Matt Bollant and a former assistant of violating their civil rights by using race to divide the team and try to force some players out.

The lawsuit adds to this year’s stream of accusations against the school’s sports programs over player treatment.

Some of the plaintiffs’ parents made similar complaints to the school in May, claims that are being investigated by a university-hired law firm along with

one from a former football player who says his injuries weren’t properly handled. A former soccer player has sued the school over the handling of her concussions.

The university, athletic director Mike Thomas, Bollant, former assistant Mike Divilbiss and university trustees are named in the lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in Champaign. The ex-players seek at least $10 million in damages.

Bollant and Divilbiss are accused of holding segregated practices, using more severe discipline for black players and taking other steps that the players believe were designed to pressure black players and white players who supported them to leave the team, according to the lawsuit. Some of the accusations date to Bollant’s hir-

ing in 2012, while others address the two most recent seasons.

“The coaches were trying to run them off the program, and give up their scholarships and leave,” attorney Terry Ekl, who represents the players, said Wednesday.

They declined comment through Ekl. Chancellor Phyllis Wise said she was disappointed the players sued before the law firm’s investigation is finished.

“I cannot stress enough that any time we learn that a student feels the experience at Illinois isn’t excellent, we take those concerns seriously,” Wise said.

“We intended that through the external review process the student-athletes and their families would help us better understand their concerns and perceptions.”

She also noted Thomas recently has added staff and made policy changes intended to prevent future problems.

Bollant, who was hired in 2012 after coaching at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, wasn’t reachable for comment.

Divilbiss resigned from the university after the initial accusations became public and hasn’t responded to phone calls since then. Both men are white.

Five of the former players – Alexis Smith, Nia Oden, Amarah Coleman, Sarah Livingston and Taylor Tuck – are black; Taylor Gleason and Jacqui Grant are white.

Tuck is a Bolingbrook grad.

Coleman attended Bolingbrook, but graduated from HomewoodFlossmoor.

According to the lawsuit, Smith, Oden and Tuck were

called “toxic” and “crabs” who pull each other down. The alleged segregated practices were referred to as “the dog pound.”

The players also say the coaches implied at least some of the black plaintiffs were unintelligent, undisciplined “west-side ghetto” players.

“The grossly inappropriate statements were made by Divilbiss but in the presence of Bollant,” Ekl said. “He should have stopped Divilbiss from doing it.”

Similarly, the lawsuit claims, the athletic director should have prevented their actions. The players also accuse Bollant of trying to recruit more white players. He replaced Jolette Law, a black woman who recruited Smith, Oden and Tuck before she was fired by Thomas in 2012. Law was 69-93 in five seasons at Illinois.

ROMEOVILLE – Growing up in the home of a man who was a successful longtime coach and athletic director, it may come as no surprise that Mike Strode became an educator and recently was named as Romeoville athletic director.

But Strode’s path to his current position certainly didn’t follow a traditional route since he originally planned to pursue a career in the military.

It wasn’t until he was in college after his service that the son of hall of fame Hinsdale Central football coach and athletic director Gene Strode realized that he was finally ready to get into the education field.

And after joining District 365U in 2000 and becoming assistant athletic director in 2007, Strode recently was hired to succeed his former boss, Jim Boudouris, overseeing the Spartans’ athletic program.

“Starting out, there wasn’t a shot that I wanted to go into education,” Strode said. “My brother and sisters and I saw it first-hand. The late nights, people calling directly to the house, whether it was newspa-

pers or parents or players on the team.

“Not that I wasn’t a hard-working kid, but I saw the work that went into it , but it was like, ‘No way do I want to do that.’ But life is weird and you’re made like a puzzle piece and eventually you kind of find where you’re going to be in life.”

After trying to make a go of at in college, Strode thought that he a career in the service was his best option, but the corporal eventually also saw those plans get dashed.

“I served four years in the Marine Corps on a CH-53, which was a piece of junk helicopter that probably did more damage to people than it did good,” Strode said. “Toward the end of that, a major told me that I needed to get out and I told him that he didn’t understand.

“I went through the college thing, and it didn’t work out and that I was a worker bee and I’d found my niche. But a couple of days later, a hydraulics man told that I should become a P.E. teacher. To make a long story short, I did go into education and to P.E. and found that it really wasn’t as hard as I thought it was and it

Joliet Central small, but may be even quicker

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When last seen in meaningful competition, the Joliet Central boys basketball team was throwing a huge scare into favored Bolingbrook in the championship game of the Class 4A Romeoville Regional.

The Raiders managed to force overtime, however, and wound up winning, 48-42. Not long after that, Bolingbrook was at center court receiving thirdplace medallions at the state finals in Peoria.

The loss to the Raiders ended the season for the 15-13 Steelmen. They would have liked more wins, but on the other hand, they had little size to go up against a difficult schedule.

Size will be limited again in the fall.

However, Central has enough experience returning and enough talented underclassmen joining varsity that things could get interesting in a hurry.

“We’re seeing quality opponents here,” Steelmen assistant Greg Smith said during last week’s Morris Shootout, where Central finished 3-2.

“We just went 4-3 at a tournament at Stagg.

“Jeff [Corcoran, the head coach] has these guys playing so many games this summer. We’re giving 20 kids playing time, which is good because we can find out which kids are going to make the team and what role they are going to play.

“With so many games, we’re able to switch up. Some kids might play three nights a week and the other nights we’re able to send other kids.”

Brian Koehne is Corcoran’s varsity assistant. Britt Charley is the head sophomore coach, and Dan Wikert is the head freshman coach.

Smith, formerly the head coach at Providence, identified himself as “more of a floater. I’ll probably spend some time on all levels.”

Smith has coached on lower levels at Central the last several years, so he has a good idea what the varsity has to offer.

“There are good ball handlers 1 through 5,” he said. “We have quickness, which can help make up for lack of size. It will come down to how hard you work.”

If that is a determining factor, the Steelmen have one of the best in 6-foot-2 inside force Malik Fuller, an All-SouthWest Suburban Blue selection last season.

“Pound for pound, Malik has to be one of the best anywhere,” Smith said.

“He is outsized by everyone, but he just battles inside.

I just work on getting position. That’s how I get rebounds.”

At 6-3, Grubbs is the tallest of the Steelmen. Fuller agreed the presence of Grubbs, who saw significant playing time last season as a sophomore, will be beneficial to him.

“Jose has been a big help for our team on the boards,” Fuller said. “I’ve played with him since elementary school.”

With senior Taquan Sims and junior Jason Bingham Jr. on the floor together, the Steelmen have the potential to push the ball if they can net their share of defensive rebounds.

“TQ [Sims] has been running the show ever since he was at Laraway,” Smith said. “He makes everyone better with his passing ability. He’s a smart player.

“Bingham can handle it, too. He can his length, his arm length, helps Malik. score, and he’s a quick athlete.”

Those two own the boards for us.”

Others still have time in the summer to demonstrate their value.

The Steelmen have enjoyed a relatively good summer, except for those occasions where they have gotten off to slow starts.

“Jeff [Corcoran] is trying to get rid of those slow starts,” Smith said.

“We got down to Wheaton Warrenville South, 23-3, the other day. We have to be ready to play hard off the start every game.”

“We’re working hard to get everything,” Fuller said. “We’ve been playing pretty well the last couple of weeks, and we’re still getting everybody a lot of minutes.”

NEW YORK – Starlin Castro legged out a run-scoring infield single in the 11th inning, and the Cubs blanked the punchless New York Mets, 2-0, Wednesday night for their second consecutive shutout at Citi Field.

Jon Lester returned to form with seven sharp innings, and the Cubs overcame a major baserunning blunder to score twice in the 11th. Miguel Montero added an RBI single and The Cubs won their eighth straight against the Mets, including the first six of seven meetings this season.

The staggering Mets botched a suicide squeeze in the eighth and a double-play ball in the 11th during their latest flop at the plate.

After neither team was able to score for 10 innings, Dexter Fowler drew a leadoff walk from Carlos Torres (24) in the 11th. Anthony Rizzo hit a grounder to shortstop, but second baseman Wilmer Flores made a low relay to first and Lucas Duda was un-

able to scoop the ball out of the dirt.

Kris Bryant singled and so did Chris Coghlan. But when Rizzo was held at third, Bryant got hung up after tearing around second and was easily tagged out.

CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler bet on himself and won big.

Butler agreed to terms Wednesday on a five-year maximum contract that could be worth $90 million and includes a player option for the final year, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the deal has not been finalized. The total value of the contract could wind up being a little higher depending on the salary cap figure for next season, which will be set on July 9.

The deal comes on the heels of a breakout season in which Butler made his first All-Star team and was selected the NBA’s Most Improved Player.

He averaged 20 points after he and the Bulls were unable to agree to a contract extension last fall.

The Bulls also agreed to terms with Mike Dunleavy on a three-year, $14 million deal, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.

The person also spoke on condition of anonymity because no contracts can be signed until July 9.

Butler posted a photo of downtown Chicago on his Twitter account with the words, “windy city skyline ... aka home.”

It’s been a remarkable rise for Butler, who was kicked out of his house by his mother at age 13, started his college career at Tyler Junior College and was the last pick in the first round out of Marquette in 2011.

He quickly became indispensable for the Bulls and his tireless work ethic endeared him to hard-nosed coach Tom Thibodeau.

Thibodeau is gone now, replaced by Fred Hoiberg. But Butler and Derrick Rose will

be back in what should be a dynamic backcourt for the Bulls.

Butler turned down a fouryear, $44 million offer from the Bulls before last season. At the time he said he was betting on himself, willing to play last year for just under $3.2 million to earn the right to become a restricted free agent.

It turned out to be a wise decision. Butler solidified himself as perhaps the best two-way shooting guard in the league, averaging career highs in points (20.0), rebounds (5.8), field goal percentage (46.2), 3-point percentage (37.8) and minutes (38.7).

The breakout season earned Butler almost $50 million more with his new contract than the one he would have signed last year.

And even though he entered restricted free agency and garnered interest from the Lakers and other teams, Butler made it clear all along where his heart was.

Lockport woman runs ministry to provide inner-city youth with basic needs

L

OCKPORT – Showing compassion to single-parent and poverty-stricken homes is deep in the heart Diane Carroll of Lockport, a single mom who has known financial challenges.

“Kids are going day in and day out without necessities,” Carroll said. “Parents have to pay rent and food, and sometimes toiletries are last on the list.”

Eventually, Carroll worked her way from operations manager to vice president of administration for an extended warranty company. Then one act of faith from God led her to begin My Joyful Heart, an operation that helps more than 750 children in the greater Chicago area.

It started in 2001 when Carroll answered two Christmas letters through a Chicago newspaper. Come January, Carroll was still thinking about the young recipients.

“The Lord laid it heavy on my heart to see what happened to those kids the rest of the year,” Carroll said.

Carroll said she called the school where the gifts went.

With the help of the school advocate, Carroll said she helped the children throughout the year. In December 2002, Carroll said she shared her story at work and 19 co-workers wanted to help with gifts.

She created forms and then approached that same school and offered to help more children. In 2004, Carroll launched My Joyful Heart, and in 2006, she left her 14-year career to focus solely on this ministry.

“When I left my career, I didn’t know how I was going to support myself, but I put my trust in Jesus and never looked back,” said Carroll, who now works for My Joyful Heart. “He continues to provide for me, I have a heavenly boss and the benefits are eternal.”

Plainfield holds Annual Olympic Day The HERALD-NEWS PLAINFIELD – St. Mary Immaculate Parish School in Plainfield held its Annual Olympic Day on May 22 at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Students began the day with a parade around the track led by the fifth grade Girl Scout Troop, who then also conducted the flag ceremony. The concert band then played the National Anthem and then the day’s sporting events began.

Each grade rotated as a group around the stadium to visit all the events, which included the long jump, an obstacle course, 50-and 100-meter runs, as well as games of kickball and volleyball.

PLAINFIELD – On May 16, more than 225 runners and walkers gathered outside St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield to participate in the 4th Annual SMI 5K and Kids 2K Run/Walk.

Just before the start of each race, prayer was said and the national anthem sung an SMI eighth grader.

School parents volunteered on the course directing the runners, in the booth cheering the runners as they finished, and in the gym serving pancakes at the award ceremony for both races.

The 5K overall male first place winner was Nick Albright of Plainfield with a time of 18:37.

The 5K overall female first place winner was Mariam Hussain with a time of 23:03.

If you inherit certain characteristics, you also are at higher risk for melanoma: red or blond hair color, lots of freckles, light eye color (green, hazel, blue), and fair (lightly pigmented) skin. Also very important in raising your risk is frequent and intense exposure to sunlight.

Dear Dr. K: My aunt developed the skin cancer called melanoma, and I hear that this cancer can run in families. What should I look for when I examine my skin for melanoma?

Dear Reader: Skin cancers are the most common cancers in the United States, and skin checks are an important way to identify them. You asked about the deadliest type of skin cancer, melanoma.

My Harvard Medical School colleague, dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Arndt, says that more than half of melanomas are identified by patients, either alone or with the help of a partner. That’s important because more than 90 percent of cases can be cured with early detection and treatment.

Skin carries out many functions that help maintain health. It forms a defensive barrier, protecting inner organs from foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. It helps control body temperature.

Finally, it uses the sun’s energy to make vitamin D, which is essential to many bodily functions.

Skin cancers form in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. Cells called melanocytes, located in the epidermis, produce a dark pigment called melanin.

This pigment colors skin and helps protect against the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Melanoma begins in the melanocytes.

Often, these melanocytes are part of a pigmented spot on the skin called a mole (the medical term is “nevus”) that is not cancerous. However, the melanocytes in the nevus can start to turn cancerous. That changes the appearance of the pigmented spot on the skin.

Without early detection and treatment, melanoma can spread throughout the body, and sometimes is fatal.

Others realize that you don’t really know someone until you have lived with him or her. Divorce is messy, not to mention expensive on many levels, and they want to avoid the pain if possible – although few separations are painless.

I believe that parents should choose their battles carefully after their children become adults. What these parents are doing may eventually isolate them from their daughters. Acting as they are, there may be other happy occasions they’ll be skipping. This one is just the first.

Dear Abby: If the letter writer and his wife accept an invitation to someone’s house, do they check first to make sure their hosts share their “values,” that they vote the same way, are against gay marriage, have the same religious beliefs? If they don’t take that same care with everyone they know, they are being unfair to their daughters.

For five years they were apparently comfortable with the daughters living at home or in their own apartments and having sex with their boyfriends on the sly. Now that the young women are honestly acknowledging the sexual relationship and formalizing it by living together openly, suddenly there’s a problem. There’s a stench of hypocrisy here. – Online

Dear Readers: On May 5, I printed a letter from a parent, “Against the Tide in New Jersey.” He said his “independent, intelligent, loving” daughters (both in their late 20s) have dated their boyfriends for five years and had recently moved in with them. The man also said he and his wife approve of the young men.

One daughter is planning to have an open house and invited her parents. The writer said his daughter is upset because he and his wife refuse to attend because cohabitation is against their beliefs. He said he and his wife “understand her decision,” but their daughter doesn’t appear to respect theirs. He asked, “Are we wrong?”

I responded yes, because it’s no longer unusual for couples to cohabit before marriage. I asked how long they plan to continue punishing the daughter and said I don’t think they have anything to gain by doing so.

I realize it is “not unusual for couples today to live together.” However, you must certainly be aware that many religious people regard doing so as a sin against God.
