IDOT buys Bult Field airport in Will County

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com The Illinois Department of Transportation has purchased Bult Field – a general aviation airport near Monee and a key component of the state’s overall plan to develop the South Suburban Airport – for $34 million.

The transaction covers 288 acres, including the airport’s 5,000-foot runway, taxiway, hangars and terminal, as well as additional farmland surrounding the airfield near Monee.

“This acquisition marks a defining milestone for the South Suburban Airport,” Susan R. Shea, IDOT’s director of aeronautics, said in a news release on the acquisition.

“The Bults are true aviation enthusiasts who built one of the finest general aviation airports in the country. This

ownership transition will be as seamless as possible for airport users.”

Will County Executive Larry Walsh said the purchase shows the commitment IDOT and Gov. Pat Quinn have made to making the airport a reality.

“It catapults IDOT into being recognized as operators of a general aviation airport, which in the long-range plan fits right into what will become the South Suburban airport,” Walsh said.

The state will continue to operate Bult Field as a general aviation airport until it is incorporated into the inaugural South Suburban Airport.

“It’s a turnkey operation,” Walsh noted. “Instead of Jim Bult being the operator, it now will be IDOT. They’ll be selling fuel, renting storage, everything.”

Even after the South Sub-

urban Airport is open for business, Bult Field will continue to serve the area’s general aviation and corporate aircraft needs as part of the overall operations of the state’s new commercial airport facility, IDOT officials said.

The purchase of Bult Field is the latest in a string of major acquisitions for the South Suburban Airport. In the past year, IDOT has acquired more than 1,150 acres in support of the project. So far, IDOT has acquired more than 3,500 acres of the approximately 5,800 that are needed for the inaugural airport.

In addition to the ongoing land acquisition, IDOT is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to develop an airport master plan and complete the environmental approval process for the project.

Ambulance blows tire, crashes on way to Silver Cross Hospital

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Three people suffered minor injuries Tuesday morning when a Wilmington Fire Department ambulance blew a tire and crashed on Laraway Road.

Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said the accident happened about 9:55 a.m. as the ambulance was about a quarter-mile west of Loganberry Road near the Chicagoland Speedway.

The ambulance was taking an 81-year-old woman to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

“The driver indicated he was traveling eastbound at approximately 60 miles per hour [when] he felt an unusual vibration and then the right front tire blew,” Hoffmeyer said.

Wilmington residents deal with wind-swept destruction

That was the word on the street Tuesday in Wilmington, where wind-swept destruction from Monday night’s storms was visible in the form of uprooted trees, mangled power lines and widespread power outages.

Some streets and neighborhoods were better off than others, but the entire city went without power overnight. Many still were without power as of Tuesday afternoon, emergency management officials said.

High winds uprooted several trees along East Street and County Road near Route 53 in Wilmington. One mas-

sive tree destroyed a garage at Joliet and Mill streets.

Crushed inside were the homeowners’ 2013 Mustang GT and a Harley Davidson

motorcycle with “just 600 miles on it.”

“It was so dark last night that we couldn’t see anything.

But when the lightning lit up the sky, I said, ‘Oh my god, the tree is on our garage,’ ” Sue Roose, 60, of Wilmington, said. “There was nothing we could do. … I’m just glad. It could have been worse.”

She and her boyfriend’s home went untouched, she said. But high winds were strong enough to lift the couple’s sidewalk near the garage out of the ground.

“It was like something out of the ‘Wizard of Oz,’ ” Roose said.

Some residents in the area reported that power returned by the afternoon.

Ron Henderson, 47, of the 400 block of East Street, found out ComEd restored his power while he and a group of

family and friends were cleaning up his backyard, equipped with chainsaws and tree cutters. A tree fell on his home last night, causing the entire house to shake, he said.

“It sounded like a bomb went off,” he said.

Monday’s storms left the city’s famous Route 66 landmark, the Gemini Giant, untouched. But mangled power lines and tree branches could be found just steps away at East and Baltimore streets.

A tree on the west end of a two-story apartment building splintered during the height of the storm – either by lightning or high winds. Two of its branches pierced through 67-year-old Joan O’Hara’s roof.

“It could have been worse,” O’Hara said. “It could have been much worse.”

Grundy County cleaning up after storms concern because it could have caused the evacuation of local healthcare facilities, Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said.

Throughout the day Tuesday residents were encouraged to conserve water until the wells could be powered.

Morris was one of the hardest hit by Monday’s storm, according to the NWS. The city continues to be under a flood advisory until Friday as the Illinois River near Morris is predicted to reach 16 feet or higher by Wednesday, according to NWS. The Morris fire department responded to more than 100 emergency calls in less than 24 hours after the storm hit, which is about 10 times the department’s regular call volume, Steffes said.

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The two-punch storm that pummeled Grundy County on Monday night left a trail of debris, electrical fires and power outages in its wake.

The night’s first thunderstorm rolled into the area about 7 p.m. The second, more destructive storm front struck Morris at 9:48 p.m. Monday, bringing with it 80 to 90 mph winds, according to the National Weather Service. No major injuries were reported in Grundy County from the storms.

Within minutes of the second storm hitting, about 90 percent of Morris – and much of Grundy County – was without power, prompting the Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers to be put on bypass until 7 a.m. Tuesday, which meant ambulance calls were rerouted elsewhere.

State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, said ComEd representatives told him teams had been out assessing the damaged areas all day Tuesday and had executed a plan to have the majority of the residential power on in Morris and the surrounding areas by 11 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the NWS, Morris received the most rainfall in Grundy County with 1.94 inches, while Coal City received 1.61 inches, Channahon 1.46 inches and Minooka 1.36 inches.

In Morris, more than 200 trees were uprooted, several power lines were down and at least one structure – a warehouse north of town – was significantly damaged.

Emergency crews reported no injuries, but two residents were briefly trapped inside their homes Monday night after fallen trees blocked all exits, Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said at a news conference Tuesday morning.

In its report, the weather service noted the “tremendous” damage in Morris was due to straight-line winds, which can cause tornado-like destruction.

“When you get up to those speeds, straight-line winds can be just as damaging as a tornado,” NWS meteorologist Bill Nelson said Tuesday.

A significant portion of Morris was still without power Tuesday evening, including the Morris Water Treatment Plant and water wells, posing a legitimate threat to the city’s water supply.

After the water wells and plant lost power Monday, the city had about 24 hours worth of water in reserves and therefore was working to obtain generators for its wells.

Morris secured power generators for two of the city’s wells and by Tuesday evening, one of the two wells was operational with a generator and the second well was in the process of being connected to

a generator, Steffes said.

Once both are up and running, which was expected by Tuesday night, the two wells will pump about 2 million gallons into the water supply

system over the course of 24 hours and residents will no longer have to worry about a water shortage, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

Diamond’s water plant was also without power, but Mayor Terry Kernc said the village had backup generators keeping all sewage and water infrastructure working normally until power is restored.

“Residents do not need to be concerned,” Kernc said. “Our residents are in good hands.”

The Grundy County Courthouse was running on a generator as well, but several of the county’s computers and record systems were offline Tuesday, making daily operations difficult, Sheriff Kevin Callahan said.

Steffes urged residents to continue using caution as many of the wires on the ground will become live as power is restored and loose tree limbs will likely continue falling throughout the next few days.

“Some of these lines that are on the ground will become re-energized,” Steffes said.

“Watch you step and be careful of your surroundings.”

Looking back at a half-century of change Civil Rights Act of 1964 reaches milestone

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Fifty years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, outlawing discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion or national origin.

The law, enacted on July 2, 1964, was designed to ensure voter rights and end racial segregation in the nation’s schools and other public institutions, as well as in the workplace.

Now, a half-century later, those who were involved in the Civil Rights Movement recall how the landmark legislation has changed the country that we are in today.

Retired Judge Ray Bolden was 32 back then, a youth counselor and active member of the NAACP. “The effort was to get the laws on the books, at least from NAACP’s standpoint, because it was thought that through the law that we were going to achieve freedom from legal segregation,” Bolden said.

“Nobody had any illusions that any of these laws would end segregation or racism, and 50 years later we know that’s the case,” Bolden said. “We were looking for tools to combat segregation wherever it raised its head, something we didn’t have from the past.”

While the most egregious examples of racial discrimination occurred in the Deep South, the north – including Joliet – still had its share of problems, Bolden said.

The group would stage sitins at restaurants and other businesses that would discriminate against blacks, and would march in cases where police brutality was alleged, he said.

“It was a matter of making people aware, and the good people in this city – and there were a great many of them – they took action,” Bolden recalled. “Most of the people from around here weren’t from down South. For the most part they were just trying to do the best with what they had.”

The Rev. Raymond Lescher, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Joliet, also was active in the movement in the 1960s, though mostly in the Kankakee area.

Lescher said he faced tear gas and police dogs while protesting back in those days.

“It wasn’t just down South.

There was blatant racism down South, but it was hidden up North,” Lescher said.

Lescher called the signing of the act on July 2, 1964, one of the greatest moments in American history.

“It was where we finally said, ‘Yes, we believe the Constitution, that all men and women are created equal, that we are all endowed with the rights to be who we are regardless of race, creed or gender,’ ” Lescher said.

Herb Brooks, Will County Board speaker and pastor of St. John M.B. Church in Joliet, was only 10 in 1964. But even as a child, he was a witness to the violence going on in the South.

“I remember it back even as a boy, when I was 5 or 6 and living in Chicago,” Brooks said.

“I learned all about it from visiting friends and cousins. Every chance I would get, I’d run to a friend’s house where they had a TV. It really intrigued me.”

The experience changed his life, Brooks said, and encouraged him to go into politics.

Joliet City Councilman, had a similar revelation. Dorris also was a child at the time, but got an up-close look at discrimination when his family would drive down to Winona, Mississippi, to visit his grandfather.

“I had the opportunity to see whites-only restaurants, drinking fountains and bathrooms,” Dorris said. “It was a totally different world.”

In 1963, the Dorris family’s annual trip to Winona hit a roadblock in Cairo, Illinois.

“The Ku Klux Klan was not letting people pass,” Dorris recalled. “We had to turn around and come back. That was the night when I first go interested in politics.”

Now, 50 years later, these

men who bore witness to this turbulent time in America have different opinions on the legacy of the act. Yet all agree that the fight needs to continue.

“I think we’ve come full circle,” Bolden said. “The problem is that the action to repress is now coming from class manipulation. You have the rich and powerful now openly showing their muscle, and the people being most oppressed are stupidly going along with it.”

Lescher agreed.

“It’s not just black anymore.

It’s about economic justice,” Lescher said. “It’s black, white and brown. It’s about a living wage with benefits, not pover-

ty jobs. The fight goes on.”

Dorris sees a reason for hope.

“Who in 1964 would have ever thought we’d have a black president?” Dorris said. “It’s a miracle.”

But the true change he sees is in the younger generations.

“Kids don’t see color anymore, not unless they’re taught to,” Dorris said. “They go to Chuck E. Cheese’s together, play on the same swing sets, go to school together.”

Brooks echoed his sentiments.

“A lot of people I meet, at both church and in politics, tell me they don’t see color anymore,” Brooks said. “They see people.”

Plainfield woman gets 52 years for murder

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Plainfield woman will spend 52 years behind bars for killing one of her boyfriends in 2007.

“I live in my own hell,” Gabriela Escutia said during her sentencing hearing Tuesday.

Escutia, 25, was convicted earlier this year for the 2007 murder of Javier Barrios outside of a Meijer gas station in Plainfield.

She was one of two defendants in the case. Her longtime boyfriend, Ricardo Gutierrez, 25, was previously sentenced to 68 years in prison for his role in the murder.

Both killers and the victim were 18 when Escutia began dating Barrios while Gutierrez served a jail sentence.

Escutia claimed Barrios became violent when she tried to break things off and return to

Gutierrez. On Oct. 27, 2007, Escutia and Gutierrez ambushed Barrios outside the Meijer gas station in Plainfield and shot him to death.

“I know ‘I’m sorry’ as an apology falls short,” Escutia told Judge Carla Alessio-Policandriotes and the Barrios family Tuesday.

“It was never my intention for Javy to die. I was scared,” Escutia said. “It’s not something I’ll ever forget. I live in my own hell.”

Escutia’s defense attorney, Chuck Bretz, said prosecutors never offered evidence that Barrios was not abusive to Escutia for the few months they dated.

“No young girl or woman should be subjected to [violence]. The jury found Barrios’ actions did not constitute a defense but it should be mitigation for sentencing,” Bretz argued.

Alessio-Policandriotes said though Escutia had a supportive family, she “never trusted any of them with the concerns [for her safety] she expressed here in open court.”

“Maybe they were outside the scope of reality, truth. We heard she had a plan; that she had a lot of time to change that plan and she didn’t,” the judge said.

Escutia told Barrios they would talk things out in the parking lot. But she hid a pistol in a pair of sweatpants she was holding and wore a glove on her hand to prevent leaving fingerprints. When she opened the door of Barrios’ vehicle, she shot him once in the chest before the gun jammed.

Escutia cleared the gun and handed it to Gutierrez, who came out of hiding in her car to shoot Barrios twice in the head.

Escutia stared down at the defendant’s table during much of the proceedings and showed little reaction when her sentence was announced. After standing before the bench to hear her appellate rights, she sat down at the far end of the jury box, was shackled by Will County deputies and left the courtroom without looking back.

Escutia faced between 45 years to life in prison. She must serve her entire sentence but will receive credit for the years she’s already spent in the county jail and is set to be released from prison in 2059.

Before Escutia was sentenced, Viridiana Barrios described her older brother as a kind and caring person who knew how to put a smile on anyone’s face.

“The wound in our hearts will never be mended,” she said. “Our family opened the door to Gabriela and her daughter. We never imagined she would be capable of [murder].”

JOLIET – Like in a real-life game of Monopoly, the city and Metra will be swapping downtown properties as Joliet gets set to build its new transportation center.

Under an intergovernmental agreement approved by the City Council on Tuesday, the two entities each will give and take both ownership and management rights on buildings, towers and platforms.

Metra will transfer ownership of its existing signal tower property at Jefferson Street and Art Schultz Drive – the site of the city’s new train station – to Joliet, City Manager Jim Hock said.

The city will own the new station and be responsible for repairs, maintenance, heating, cooling and water services.

Metra will maintain janitori-

al and housekeeping duties, and be responsible for phone, cable, data and Internet hookups.

Under a 50-year lease, Metra also will operate a ticket agent office and passenger convenience facility in the new station. The city will be able to lease space in the facility to other users, such as Amtrak and a food vendor.

Metra will own, operate and maintain the new Rock Island platform, while Union Pacific Railroad will own the permanent Heritage Corridor platform after it is placed in service. The Heritage Corridor initially will be served by a temporary platform.

Vintage railroad switching equipment from the old signal tower will be used as a historical display in the new station.

Homeowners unhappy with development

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A recent change in development plans has Airport Road homeowners worried about their property values.

“They went in and got plans approved, but now there are drastic changes,” said Tom Stefanski, an unincorporated Lockport Township resident at 20228 Airport Road who claims the changes will significantly

lower his property values.

Aryzta, formerly Great Kitchens, has been planning to build a refrigeration unit on the Filotto Farm property at 20216 Airport Road. The property was originally unincorporated.

The Romeoville Village Board annexed 32 acres, most of the property, for Aryzta’s industrial expansion at an April 2 board meeting. But some residents who own homes on the farmland refused to annex and sell their land.

Those residents, including Stefanski, spoke against the Aryzta development plan at that board meeting.

But new changes in the fi-

nal development plan up for vote at Wednesday’s board meeting calls for permission to use metal insulation panels and allow the business to build the facility at 97 feet high, more than twice the height of the building in the previous plan.

“This is nothing like what it was originally planned to be,” Stefanski said. “It greatly devalues my property.”

The new plan also calls for a truck access route to Airport Road, right next to the home of Jim Filotto, whose family had sold the farmland.

“Originally, a road called Chicago Tube Drive was supposed to be the access,” Filotto

The final development plan was discussed at a Planning & Zoning Commission meeting June 24 and recommended with a 4-3 vote, according to the commission report.

“What they have learned from their experience in Europe is that this new technology will make a difference in the efficiency of their operations,” Shapiro said, according to the report.

“This direction came after we had planned the building, ordered steel, put in deposits for precast and then we were given the new directive from the applicant that they were going to look at this technology,” Shapiro said.

By DERRIK J. LANG The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Paul Mazursky, the innovative and versatile director who showed the absurdity of modern life in such movies as “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice” and “An Unmarried Woman,” has died. He was 84.

The filmmaker died of pulmonary cardiac arrest Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said Nancy Willen, Mazursky’s spokeswoman.

As a talented writer, actor and producer as well as director, Mazursky racked up five Oscar nominations, mostly for writing such films as “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice” and “Enemies, A Love Story.” He also created memorable roles for the likes of Art Carney, Jill Clayburgh and Natalie Wood.

Later in life, Mazursky acted in such TV series as “The Sopranos,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Once and Again.”

He was born Irwin Mazursky in 1930, in Brooklyn.

When Mazursky graduated from high school, he changed his name from Irwin, which had hated, to Paul.

Mazursky had always dreamed of becoming an actor, and he appeared in student plays at Brooklyn College.

With the school’s permission, he flew to California to act in “Fear and Desire,” director Stanley Kubrick’s first film.

Over the years, he was nominated four times for screenplay Oscars: 1969’s “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice,” 1974’s “Harry and Tonto,” 1978’s “An Unmarried Woman” and 1989’s “Enemies, A Love Story.”

Geno was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret and his dear grandson, Michael Fronek, both of whom he could not wait to see and hug again.

Geno loved cars from an early age.

He started racing in the 1950’s and was well-known in the 1970’s for his red #99 mini-stock car racing at Joliet Memorial Stadium and throughout the Midwest. He was the longtime owner of Joliet’s Westside Service Garage.

Besides racing, he enjoyed loudly discussing Republican politics, relished eating a great dinner, relaxed by working in his garden and garage, and looked forward to playing board

games with his family. His family remembers midnight pizza runs, dune buggy rides, monkey sundaes at Walgreens, soapbox derby car races with the boys, famous root beer floats, and cheerfully opening his home to anyone who needed a place to stay. He was a faithful fan of the Bears and Cubs until the very end. He will be remembered as a fun-loving grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend who cherished his cats, Nicky-boy and Domino.

Pat Quinn’s contention that he took swift action after learning last summer of improper patronage hiring in his Department of Transportation, the head of the agency abruptly resigned Monday, just four months before the Democrat faces voters in a re-election bid.

Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider called it quits as Quinn’s campaign against Republican challenger Bruce Rauner heats up, and just two weeks after a news report that Schneider’s stepdaughter might have been among those whose hiring sidestepped the rules.

Quinn said Tuesday that Schneider resigned voluntarily, but the governor continues to fend off criticism of IDOT hiring after a news report and federal lawsuit claimed politically-connect-

ed candidates were hired for state jobs that should have been protected from such considerations. He continues to fend off questions about a separate 2010 anti-violence program in Chicago, a $55 million initiative which a state audit found sloppy and in some cases, wasteful.

Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove, ranking Republican on a House transportation committee, said Tuesday that Schneider’s resignation was “damage-control” for a governor who continues to try to present himself as a reformer.

“He was an outsider for years, regularly lampooning good-ol’-boy, business-as-usual political hiring and political patronage,” Sandack said.

“So you start a career on the outside criticizing these types of measures and for his administration to be criticized for more of the same, I’m sure is highly embarrassing.”

Association reported in August 2013 that IDOT – during the tenure of Quinn and his predecessor, impeached and imprisoned ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich – had hired as many as 200 people for positions that should have been publicly posted and had interviews conducted under a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that prohibits hiring based on political considerations.

Following up on that, anti-patronage activist Michael Shakman filed a lawsuit reiterating a call he issued in 2010 for an appointed monitor to verify that state government hiring is on the upand-up.

At a stop Tuesday in suburban Chicago, Quinn declined to discuss specifics about Schneider’s departure.

He noted he had named as replacement the Veterans Affairs director, Erica Borggren, whom he said “will carry out the responsibilities of that job with excellence.”

Chicago’s homicide rate falls, while shooting rate increases

By DON BABWIN The Associated Press CHICAGO – The number of homicides in Chicago fell during the first half of the year compared to the same period last year, but the total number of people shot and the number of shooting incidents climbed, according to statistics released Tuesday by the police department.

The statistics offer a snapshot of what is happening in a city that has been the subject of widespread media attention since 2012 when it was the only city in the nation to record more than 500 homicides for the year.

With summer and an expected rise in crime, police have already implemented a key component of the overall strategy that was credit-

ed with helping bring down crime numbers last year: dispatching hundreds of police officers on overtime to highcrime neighborhoods. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who is up for re-election in February, says that reducing the city’s crime rate is a priority.

“We will keep building on our strategy, putting more officers on the street in summer months, proactively intervening in gang conflicts, partnering with community leaders,” Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said in a statement.

According to the police, there were 172 homicides through June 30 – nine fewer than the same period last year and 82 fewer than during the first six months of 2012. After the city recorded a total of 415 homicides last

year, the six-month total puts Chicago within striking distance of recording fewer than 400 homicides for the year for the first time since 1965.

More troubling are statistics that show there have been dozens more shooting victims – which includes people injured and killed – and shooting incidents so far this year compared to the same period last year. The number of shooting incidents rose to 890 from 844 for the six-month period and the number of shooting victims climbed to 1,115 from 1,030.

The numbers so far this year in all those categories are far lower than they were for the same period of 2012, police said. A spike in violent crime that year prompted the department to launch a host of crime-fighting initiatives.

Rainfall totals locally ranged from 2.32 inches in Plainfield to 1.36 inches in Minooka, according to the National Weather Service, with Winnetka in Cook County receiving the most recorded rain Monday, at 4.12 inches.

The National Weather Service confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that two EF1 tornadoes were sighted Monday, one between northwest Plainfield and northeast Romeoville, and the other near Earlville.

Both tornadoes were embedded within areas of widespread damaging winds, according to the report. An EF1 tornado is the second lowest rating on the six-point scale used by meteorologists to rate tornadoes and is considered “weak.” Still, an EF1 twister can have wind gusts from 86 to 110 mph, according to the weather service.

Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said The Reserve seemed like the hardest hit area in Plainfield, although tree limbs had fallen downtown and in other areas of the village.

“Damage was widespread throughout the county,” said Harold Damron, director of the Will County Emergency Management Agency. “The first wave caught some of the areas and the second wave caught the ones that the first wave didn’t.”

In Morris, up to 90 percent of the city had no power at one point Tuesday, and fires were kindling in backyards Monday night and early Tuesday because of fallen power lines.

A series of strong storms moved through the area the night before bringing heavy winds and rain to the area. was seen in Morris.

ComEd reported 168,600 customers were without power as of 9 a.m. in its southern region, which includes Will and Grundy counties. That number was down to 134,000 as of 4:30 p.m. At its worst during the storm’s aftermath, outages hit 394,000 for ComEd, most in the southern region.

Downed trees, power lines widespread In Plainfield, Xander’s mother, Amanda Olejniczak, said the storm came suddenly and unexpected.

“We didn’t hear the siren,” Olejniczak said. “But I heard stuff hitting the window and went into the basement. I got the severe weather alert on my phone after we were already in there.”

“Static was so scared he didn’t want to come down,” Xander said about his pet dog, who was hiding underneath a bed during the storm.

Mike Hill, another resident in the subdivision, lost several trees in his backyard and took his family to the basement during the storm.

“I heard stuff hitting the house,” Hill said. “We could hear the wind and our ears were popping. There must

have been some suction to do that and take out windows like this.”

Storm damage in other parts of Will County was more scattered, although Romeoville experienced a major power outage and sustained damage that closed part of Route 53 from Enterprise Drive to Normantown Road.

“We had a lot of uprooted trees. Some of them fell onto a couple of cars,” Romeoville Deputy Police Chief Steve Lucchesi said.

A section of 135th Street west of Route 53 was closed because a street light fell onto live power lines, where it hung while Romeoville police waited for ComEd technicians.

Traffic at the intersection had to be rerouted through a shopping plaza.

The light fell yards away from a nearby Mobil gas station, which lost power and could not operate pumps.

Owner Shujah Syed set a pail to collect water dripping from the roof of the gas station.

“The power is out all over here,” Syed said, who was selling items out of his store and even that was difficult. “The roof is leaking. The cold items will get spoiled. Everything is kind of falling apart.”

Businesses damaged in Lockport In Bolingbrook, dispatchers were “extremely busy with alarm calls and 911 calls about the storm,” according to Police Lt. Mike Rompa.

Power outages and roads blocked by trees also were widespread.

Rompa said public works crews responded and moved the trees off roadways until they could be fully removed later in the day. The heavy rain also flooded Royce Road until 4 a.m., Rompa said.

Lockport Township Fire Chief Dave Skoryi said the first storms damaged businesses in the Summit Plaza off Ninth Street.

A Master Lube oil change shop at 1038 E. Ninth St. in Lockport was closed Tuesday morning after sustaining structural damage, including a crack in one wall, police said.

In Joliet, about two dozen trees were reported to have been blown down at Oakwood Cemetery and neighboring St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery on Cass Street. Work crews were cleaning up the cemeteries Tuesday morning.

New Lenox fared well against the storm, said Village Administrator Kurt Carroll, even though there were fallen trees and power outages.

In Mokena, both the Village Hall and the police station were without power Tuesday morning.

Frankfort experienced power outages in half of the downtown district since 10:30 p.m.

Monday, Village Administrator Jerry Ducay said, adding that ComEd has told the village power in those areas likely will not be restored for 24 hours.

“I am sweltering in my office right now because we have no power at our office,” Mokena Police Chief Steven Vaccaro said.

Vaccaro said ComEd had restored power by late Tuesday morning at about half of the Mokena locations where outages occurred. But a number of traffic lights in town were not working.

Blue ribbons memorialize Dwight shooting victims

DWIGHT – Neighbors have tied blue ribbons to trees in a central Illinois village where a shooting left a mother and a daughter dead.

The Daily Journal in Kankakee reported organizers of the campaign in Dwight want to remember the victims and help support the younger woman’s son.

The blue memorial bows are raising money for the son of 30-year-old Kelli Denker, who was killed June 14 along with her mother, 60-year-old Donna Denker. A 23-year-old man also was shot and is recovering.

Organizers say they’ve distributed 50 ribbons for a suggested donation of $5 each. It’s a way to channel uneasiness and anxiety about the unsolved crime.

Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond says investigators are making progress in the case.

State police: Three dead in Williamson County wreck

MARION – Illinois State Police suspect excessive speed played a role in a three-car wreck that killed three people in southern Illinois’ Williamson County.

Authorities have not released the names of the victims of the wreck about 9:30 p.m. Monday on Illinois Route 13.

Investigators say a Pontiac Firebird and a Porsche were westbound on the highway when a Toyota Scion entered their paths. Watson says the Pontiac then hit the Toyota and caught fire.

Watson says the driver of the Porsche managed to avoid the other two cars but slid into Crab Orchard Lake.

Gov. Honored Ill. fire chief not offered new contract

WASHINGTON, Ill. – The board that oversees the fire department in the central Illinois town of Washington likes the job Fire Chief Mike Vaughn has done but apparently not enough to keep him around.

The board voted last month not to offer Vaughn a new contract after his six years on the job. Weeks earlier Vaughn was given a statewide award for valor for his work during the November tornado that hit Washington.

The Peoria Journal Star reports the department’s employees are upset and petitioning the city to take over the department. The department is

essentially private and contracts with the city.

Board President Bob Linsley says Vaughn has done a good job but his philosophy differs from the board’s.

Vaughn said “I’d give my right arm to stay.”

U.S. court in Illinois expands outreach

CHICAGO – The chief judge for the U.S. district court that serves northern Illinois is continuing to make community outreach a priority. Now, it’s by establishing a judicial speakers bureau.

Chief Judge Ruben Castillo has previously talked about helping citizens better understand the justice system. The bureau is meant to get even more

judges out into public forums to explain how it works.

The clerk of the Chicagobased court, Thomas Bruton, announced the initiative Monday. It comes one year after Castillo became the first Hispanic to lead the nation’s third busiest district.

The district spans from Chicago to Rockford and west to the Iowa border.

Decatur NAACP criticizes process of jury selection

DECATUR – The Decatur branch of the NAACP is complaining about the juror-selection process after a jury the group described as containing “no diversity” acquitted a white man charged in the killing of a

black man.

Bryson Harden was acquitted last month in the 2012 shooting death of 21-year-old Jarvas Thomas in Decatur.

The lawsuit by the Federal Trade Commission, which fueled a separate federal investigation, demands that T-Mobile refund the money to consumers for subscriptions to premium text services such as $10-per-month horoscopes that were never authorized by the account holder.

The FTC alleges that T-Mobile collected as much as 40 percent of the charges, even after being alerted by other customers that the subscriptions were scams.

The announcement was a blow to the popular mobile phone provider, which had been making gains in the market by offering consumers flexible phone plans.

States will begin to feel the pain of cutbacks in federal aid as soon as the first week in August – peak summer driving time – if Congress doesn’t act, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a letter to states. That’s because the balance in the federal Highway Trust Fund is dropping and will soon go below $4 billion, the cushion federal officials say is needed for incoming fuel tax revenue to cover outgoing payments to states.

Stay safe for Fourth As far as birthday celebrations go, the Fourth of July is usually one of the best of the year.

The Fourth of July is Friday, but parties and festivities celebrating the birth of our nation began this past weekend.

And we’re gearing up for the parties.

July 4, 1776, is the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted, an announcement by the Continental Congress that signified they no longer considered themselves part of the British Empire and were forming a new nation, the United States of America, made up of the 13 colonies.

It has become a day of parties and barbecues, ball games and flying American flags.

It is a day to celebrate the country and all it stands for, and to remember those who have died protecting and fighting for the truths and freedoms the country and its citizens have held self-evident for centuries.

That will be done locally this week weekend, as municipalities and organizations hold parades, festivals and shoot off fireworks as the nation celebrates its 238th birthday.

We encourage residents to attend these events, to display pride at being Americans and living in a country that, for all its faults, trials and tribulations, remains one of the most free and best nations in the world.

And we encourage you to do so safely, to show respect to yourself and your neighbors as you celebrate your country.

If you’re driving or boating, don’t drink. Wear sunscreen if you’re out in the sun. If you display the flag, do so honorably.

Leave the fireworks to professionals.

While it’s tempting to want to light a few firecrackers, that’s best left to those who have the training to do so safely. It’s illegal to buy, use or possess commercial fireworks in Illinois without a display permit from local authorities, anyway.

Even sparklers need to be handled with care.

The Fourth of July is a day to celebrate. Please, as you wish America a happy birthday, do so responsibly.

Taking a stand for mothers everywhere Pam Harris is just a Lake County mom looking after her disabled adult son. She’s not a particularly political person. But on Monday, she shook the very foundations of labor law in the United States when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in her favor.

In a state as cynical as Illinois, it’s easy to be skeptical about folks like Harris. How much of a difference can one person really make when taking on the political establishment?

Well, in Harris’ case, quite a lot.

At issue was whether she should be forced to join a union.

Rather than place her son, Josh, in an institution, she entered a program where she receives state assistance to care for him at home. But one Sunday morning, an organizer for Service Employees International Union knocked on her door and asked her to vote to join a union.

At first she was perplexed. She’s not a state worker. She’s just a mom, doing what moms do: caring for her child. And SEIU is one of the largest, politically powerful labor organiza-

VIEWS Scott Reeder tions in the nation. But if a majority of home care workers voted to join the union, she would have to give money to the union – whether she wanted to belong or not.

Harris stood up to the union and helped defeat it in a vote. But she knew that wasn’t the end of the story. The union could just keep coming back and calling for more votes. So she sued the state, which had helped facilitate the union’s organizing attempts. The case was called Harris vs. Quinn. But it might be more aptly labeled David vs. Goliath. After all, what hope does an ordinary person have in standing up to an entire state government and one of the nation’s most powerful unions?

I found the case intriguing, so I traveled to Washington to hear it argued and I hoped to interview Harris

on the steps of the Supreme Court.

I heard her attorney in the courthouse ask the Supreme Court justices to rule that workers such as Harris not be forced to pay union dues or “representation fees” to unions. SEIU – and other government unions – could see the danger of losing a lawsuit like this and did everything they could to win.

They were on the steps of the court being interviewed by a gaggle of reporters. But Pam stayed home.

She was back in Lake County looking after her son. The case wasn’t about personal acclaim, for her.

It was about her and others in her situation doing what’s best for their children. And on Monday, she showed how much of a difference one person can make.

If the Earth is to heal and sustain humankind, a new paradigm must replace Friedman’s discredited theories that result in the destruction of the life-giving essentials of unpolluted soils, clean water and air.

Romeoville hopes to build on experience

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – After earning its first playoff appearance since 2002, Romeoville’s football team has its sights set on getting there again and doing even better.

With seven performers back on offense as well as about half of last year’s defense, coach Jeff Kuna is encouraged that his Spartans can improve upon last year’s 5-5 mark.

“One of the biggest things that I’m encouraged about is that we have a lot of experience coming back on offense,” said Kuna, whose squad fell, 18-14, to Rich Central in the Class 6A playoffs. “With Kelvin Jones at quarterback, Gill Whitaker at tailback and Chuck Hunter and Manuel Nartey at outside receivers, that core group with all of their experience is going to play well into what we can do offensively.

“We have three of our five lineman back so now we’re looking at who those other two linemen are going to be, as well as who our tight end and fullback will be. We think that we’re getting answers since we have some kids who are doing good things. I think by the time that we get to week one, we’ll have those spots figured out.”

With so many key players back on offense, Kuna has been able to go with a little different approach during events like last week’s 7-on-7 that Romeoville hosted.

“The guys feel comfortable in the offensive scheme because we’re going to do a lot of the same things that we did last year,” Kuna said. “You’re always looking to see if there’s another wrinkle that we can add to it, but at the same time, we felt good about a lot of the things that we did in the run game and pass game, and we’ll

build off of those. With a lot of the same personnel back, we want to take things to another level.”

It’s always helpful when an offense returns a quarterback, top receivers and a tailback.

That gives senior quarterback Kelvin Jones encouragement heading into the season.

“Most of our line is coming back, so they’re going to know most of our plays, and Chuck and Manuel are really good receivers, so we’re going to see if we can get better,” Jones said.

“People have been working hard so far and we’re all trying to get on the same page.

“We’ve got some of our defense back but the underclassmen have been doing a good job of stepping up. Most of us have been playing football together since we were little kids and we’ve grown up together, so we’re all really close and we know how to pick each other up. We want to get back to the playoffs again and then see how far we can go.”

that one of his team’s strengths is its solid group of seniors, who seem very determined to improve upon last season’s success.

“This senior group has been together for a long time,” Kuna said. “They had some success playing together at the youth levels and a good

core group of them have stuck together since then. They were very happy that we got into the postseason last year but the sentiment afterward was not just being satisfied to get there, but that they could have done better. We feel that we can be a team that hopefully can do something in the

playoffs.

“I think with every team, health is always a main concern. We’re going to carry 50 players so it’s very important to us that we’re good at every position and our backup is just as good since we’re not going to go much deeper than twodeep at many positions.”

Ex-receiver says he’s prepared to lead Cougars

ROMEOVILLE – Braden Lentini received an opportunity last season not many quarterbacks get.

He followed in the footsteps of his former teammate, Kody Voda, an outstanding pass receiver who took over full-time last season as the Plainfield South quarterback.

Lentini was among the Cougars’ top receivers in 2013 and now it’s his turn to move into the quarterback slot.

“I think I will have defenses figured out better after spending last year as a receiver,” Lentini said during last week’s Spartans Shootout 7-on7 tournament. “It’s a different perspective. I got to see how corners play, what their tendencies are. I could give our receivers some tips.”

“When you’re playing out on the edge, you get an idea of what’s available,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “Braden has been a quarterback all along, but we wanted him on the field last year. He has a strong arm and great quickness. His decision-making is really noticeable this year.”

Lentini said he began his youth football career as a running back.

“My second year I played quarterback because my team needed one,” he said. “I can see me putting the ball in the air a good amount of time this season and taking off with it some.

I’ll probably carry it more than other teams’ quarterbacks will.”

But while Lentini is ready to assume the controls, Bublitz said South has holes to fill.

The Cougars finished 6-4 last season, suffering a first-round playoff loss to powerful Marist.

Among the names gone from that team are Voda, Clifton Garrett, Josh Harris and Mason Matesevic. Garrett was an All-American linebacker last

shown up and we’re getting to the point where we hope we can reach our potential.

Lentini said the attitude is a plus.

“Even when we weren’t practicing with the coaches, we got together and did some stuff, and we went at it hard in the weight room,” he said. “Cody Viertel has taken a strong leadership role, which is important.

“We don’t have a lot of varsity experience in some spots, but we feel we have a really talented group. We have to put it to work now.”

Two. That’s not bad. It could have been worse.

If you’re Tim Graf, however, two pounds is headline material.

Graf, 57, is one of the fastest sprinters in the world in his age division. He is winding down his outdoor season, “resting and acting my age.”

That included visiting Taste of Joliet last weekend and, yes, tacking on a couple of pounds.

Of course, in his case, the gain will be temporary.

In addition to training others in the art of sprinting at Graf Speed Enhancement, which he operates on the Joliet Junior College campus, the former Illinois state high school 100-yard dash champion at Joliet East and Big Ten Conference 100-meter champ at Indiana continues to compete at the highest level.

Last month, he won the 100 meters in the 55-59 age group at the USATF Open and Masters Illinois State Championship with a time of 12.63 seconds.

He then tacked on the 200-meter championship in 25.38.

The 100 time was the ninth fastest in the nation and the 200 was the third fastest. Both were run into a 15-mph head wind, yet both earned him All-America honors.

Maybe he felt there was some unfinished business, however. The next Tuesday, Graf competed in the Indian Pride summer meet at Minooka. He was clocked at 12.25 in the 100, which was second best in the nation and third in the world.

“I’m having a really good year,” Graf said. “I gave up sprinting a little when I was in my 30s. But I’ve been back in Masters for 17 years.”

Like the Energizer Bunny, Graf keeps on going, and he does it in his unique manner.

“I don’t do it that way. I run Graf Speed Enhancement and train at Joliet Catholic and lift at Joliet Catholic. It’s real close to where I live.”

It doesn’t matter where you train; what matters is understanding the principle.

“Succeeding in sprinting is all about power into speed,” Graf said. “The definition of speed is maximum force to the ground in minimal time.”

Graf said he never lifted weights in high school and lifted only in the offseason in college. Now he lifts regularly, but properly, and feels stronger than ever.

“I lift light weights, nothing heavy, but with fast reps,” he said. “Lifting alone isn’t the answer. You have to do it in the correct way.”

Graf has been teaching local athletes proven methods to improve their speed for years.

Among his clients in the past were college football players, some of them stars at big-time programs, who came to him to improve their NFL draft status.

Unfortunately, the world has changed.

“I haven’t had any college guys trying to get ready for the draft the last couple of years,” Graf said. “The college kids

all want to go to Florida and Arizona. They don’t want to train at JJC, which, by the way, is a phenomenal asset to our community.

“I try to explain that it’s not where you train, it’s how you train. But with all that peer pressure and the lure of Florida and Arizona, they don’t come here.”

Everyone is free to train wherever he chooses. But it is hard to believe those hot prospects come away better equipped than they would have been had they visited Graf.

Blackhawks sign Darling The Joliet area has produced precious few NHL players through the years, but the count may increase by one.

The Blackhawks on Tuesday signed goaltender Scott Darling, a Lemont native, to a one-year contract. Most likely, though, he will begin his Hawks career at Rockford.

Darling, 25, had a 13-6-2 record with six shutouts, a 2.00 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage in 26 games last season with the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League, ranking second in the league in shutouts. He was named the AHL’s Goaltender of the Month for December.

SALVADOR, Brazil – For a full 90 minutes, Belgium’s almost relentless attack added up to nothing in the face of Tim Howard.

Only in extra time was the superb United States goalkeeper finally beaten.

Kevin De Bruyne turned Howard’s heroic night into defeat on Tuesday when he scored an extra-time goal and then set up Romelu Lukaku for another to give Belgium a 2-1 victory over the Americans. Their reward is a quarterfinal match against Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates on Saturday in Brasilia.

“For my heart, please don’t give me too many games like this,” Belgium coach Marc Wilmots said. “He [Howard] was in a state of grace.”

Belgium’s unyielding attacks for the full 90 minutes of regulation time only highlighted the great performance of the 35-year-old Howard, but the goalkeeper’s teammates finally wilted in the evening heat once extra time came.

“They were all on their limit,” United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “[Howard] had an absolutely amazing match.”

Three minutes into the extra period, Lukaku found space on the right and passed into the center.

At first, the ball was poked out before De Bruyne gained possession. Belgium’s cre-

ative genius still had the energy for a sharp turn and his low shot finally missed the yellow foot of Howard and settled inside the post.

Realizing he had finally been beaten, Howard fell back on the grass almost in slow-motion.

“The levee is going to break at some point,” said Howard, who plays for Everton in the Premier League.

In the 105th minute, Belgium looked like it had put the game away. De Bruyne launched Lukaku into open space on the left and the Everton striker beat his club teammate with a drive to the near post.

It wasn’t over, however.

The Americans got late hope when Julian Green pulled one back in the 107th minute with a perfect volley on the turn that Thibaut Courtois could only touch before he saw it fly into his net.

Klinsmann started shouting with flailing arms “Come on, come on,” and there was a new team on the field.

Now, it was Belgium’s turn to be caught flat-footed.

With six minutes to go, the Americans almost got the equalizer. A free kick move set Clint Dempsey free in the center with only Courtois to beat. But the Belgium keeper proved he is one of the world’s best by spreading his giant body to smother the shot.

“It was a game that just went to the extreme,” Klinsmann said. “We just needed a little bit more luck.”

Valbuena’s sac fly lifts Cubs The ASSOCIATED PRESS BOSTON – Luis Valbuena broke a ninth-inning tie with a sacrifice fly that sent the Cubs to a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.

Anthony Rizzo started the inning with a single off Koji Uehara (3-2) and went to third on a double by Starlin Castro.

Valbuena then lined a shot to medium right field. Mookie Betts made the catch, but his throw was off line and Rizzo scored easily.

The double was the 37th extra-base hit for Castro, who entered the game tied with Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies for the major league lead among shortstops with 36.

‘Pleasant-tasting to everyone’ Joliet’s annual Taste of Greece offers good food, fellowship

OLIET – At its annual Taste of Greece festival, All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Joliet cooks whole lambs the old-fashioned way, with moist and tasty results.

First, John Argoudelis, a Plainfield resident, uses the freshest ingredients: handcracked peppercorns, sea salt, freshly squeezed lemons, fresh imported oregano and a high-grade olive oil.

Then Argoudelis slow cooks the lambs on an open spit with wood charcoal.

“It takes more time but we get a lot of compliments,” Argoudelis said.

Taste of Greece, scheduled this year for July 11 to 13, has undergone numerous transformations during its 80 years in the Joliet community.

But one thing is certain: This main fundraiser for All Saints always serves generous, reasonably priced servings of authentic Greek cuisine, Argoudelis said.

“A lot of our fundraisers involve food. Cooking good food is the thing our community does best,” said coordinator Diane Troy of Plainfield. “We have a nice fun picnic atmosphere. It’s very casual, lots of families.

Everyone just likes to come and hang out.”

Popular Taste of Greece staples include lamb (Saturday and Sunday only), shish kabobs (souvlaki) and gyros, Troy said. Last year the church added chicken, she added.

A la carte items include pastitsio, a baked macaroni dish, which some people liken to a Greek lasagna, Troy said. Other features include spanakopita, Greek salad and a cash bar, which will sell beer, wine, pop and

But each year brings some new additions, too, Troy said. This year the church will be making Greek sausage – loukaniko, a sweet pork sausage flavored with citrus and cinnamon, Argoudelis said.

“We also serve hot dogs

and chips for little kids that don’t like grown-up food,” Troy said.

Despite the several thousand orders the church will fill over the three-day festival, very little is prepared in advance. The food order doesn’t even arrive until the day before the fun begins,

Troy said. Many of the times are donated, Argoudelis said, which keeps meal prices down and net profit up.

“We cook everything right on the spot,” Troy said. “Lots of people love the gyros. It’s a nice picnic food, easy to eat. We always have a line for them.”

The dessert menu, however, never changes. It’s always baklava and loukoumades, a honey puffed pastry, Troy said.

The baklava is ordered from a bakery, Troy said, because it’s very time-consuming to prepare, especially in the large quantities the festival requires.

Each portion of loukoumades is made to order: deep fried in a creamy vegetable shortening, Troy said, and then soaked in honey.

“We put them in a little boat and sprinkle them with powdered sugar,” Troy said.

While many of the customers are associated with All Saints or other Greek churches in the Chicago area, a good many are members of the community who just enjoy the unique taste of Greek food, Troy said.

“It’s very tasty without being too strong,” Troy said.

“It has really nice flavors – olive oil, oregano, lemon – which is very pleasant-tasting to everyone. Of course, the pastry has honey and cinnamon, things everyone likes.”

On July 12 and 13 at 7 p.m., the Apollo Dance Troupe is set to entertain both patrons and workers, Troy said. The opportunity to bond with other church members is one side benefit of the event, Argoudelis said.

“A lot of times we see people in church, but never get a chance to really know them,” Argoudelis said.

“This is a nice bonding experience for us.”

Yield: 8 to 12 servings.

1 pound elbow macaroni 1 cup finely chopped onion 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 pounds hamburger Salt/pepper to taste 1 teaspoon chopped parsley 1 8-oz. can tomato sauce 1 bay leaf ½ teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup melted butter 8 eggs, beaten Breadcrumbs 1 cup grated cheese (Parmesan or Kefaloteri) 1 quart milk 5 tablespoons flour Cook macaroni in boiling salted water until almost tender. Place in colander; rinse with cold water. Set aside to drain.

Sauté onion in olive oil in saucepan; add hamburger. Cook, stirring until brown. Add salt, pepper, parsley, tomato sauce and small amount of water used to rinse can, bay leaf and cinnamon. Cook until all liquid is absorbed.

Turn macaroni into large mixing bowl; add melted butter and eggs. Mix well.

Sprinkle buttered 10 x 15 inch pan with breadcrumbs. Pour half the macaroni mixture over breadcrumbs. Sprinkle half the grated cheese over macaroni layer.

Cover with hamburger mixture.

Top with remaining macaroni mixture. Sprinkle with remaining cheese.

Pour milk in saucepan; bring to a boil. Make a paste with flour and small amount of water. Stir paste into hot milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Pour over pastitsio; top with additional breadcrumbs.

Bake in 350-degree oven for 1 hour. Serve hot. Leftover pastitsio may be frozen.

Most bridge deals are a battle.

One side is trying to execute a plan, while the other side is trying either to do the same or to thwart the opposition’s scheme.

In this deal, South was in three no-trump. What was the East-West strategy and how did South counter it? As a secondary issue, what do you think of the auction?

This deal occurred after the organized part of one of my “bridge camps without tents” (details on my web site). Four of my students were just shuffling, dealing and playing.

In the auction, I think North ought to have used Stayman to try to find a 4-4 spade fit. Here, that would have resulted in a contract of four spades. With the trumps 3-2 and the heart ace onside, this would have made easily, South losing one spade, one heart and one diamond.

In three no-trump, declarer started with only six top tricks: two spades, one heart (given the lead) and three clubs. He planned to play on diamonds to establish the extra tricks he needed, but that was going to give the lead back to the defenders.

East and West were hoping to establish and run the heart suit.

To that end, West led the heart queen and East signaled encouragingly with her six.

South correctly did not win the first trick. He had to cut the communications between the defenders.

West continued with another heart. East won with her ace and returned the suit, but South won and played a diamond, hoping that either East would take the trick or that the hearts were splitting 4-4.

As you can see, declarer was home with an overtrick.

Avoid future bouts of sciatica with regular exercise Dear Doctor K: I have sciatica. Is it safe for me to ride a stationary bike for exercise?

Dear Reader: Sciatica is persistent pain felt along the sciatic nerve. This nerve runs from the lower back, down through the buttock and into the lower leg.

Pain results when this nerve is compressed or injured. It most commonly results from inflammation, bone chips caused by arthritis, or a herniated (“slipped”) disk in the lower spine. (I’ve put an illustration showing some common causes of sciatica on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Sciatica causes sharp, burning pain, or tingling or numbness along the nerve. In many cases, symptoms are worse at night.

And the pain is aggravated by motion.

Many people with sciatica avoid exercise altogether for fear of making things worse. That’s usually not the best option. I commend your approach of exercising while being thoughtful about which exercise you choose.

As for which exercise, my advice is no different probably than what your grandmother might have given: Avoid exercises that hurt, and seek exercises that make you feel better.

You ask specifically about

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff riding a stationary bike. Sciatica pain is often worse when sitting on a firm surface because the sciatic nerve passes right through the buttock. When you sit on a bicycle seat, it can put pressure on the nerve. But sitting does not always make symptoms worse.

For example, if your sciatic nerve pain results from a problem higher up near the spine, you may tolerate riding a bike.

So, let your symptoms be your guide. If biking makes your symptoms worse, then try something else for exercise. Good choices may be walking or swimming, as they don’t put pressure on the nerve – particularly swimming.

In the meantime, try alternating hot and cold compresses to ease inflammation around the nerve. You also may need to take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain. Or try anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, others) or aspirin for pain and inflammation. Prescription medications that treat chronic nerve pain may also help. Talk to

your doctor about those. In severe cases, an injection of a long-acting anesthetic with a steroid medication can provide relief.

Some people with sciatica find relief from chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, massage and yoga. The value of these “alternative” or “complementary” therapies has been shown in several studies.

Sciatica usually improves within six weeks. Once the pain passes, specific exercises and stretches may prevent it from returning. Your doctor may refer you to a physical therapist who can guide you through a personalized exercise program. Exercises that strengthen the muscles of the back and abdomen are often prescribed. This stabilizes the spine bones and eases the pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Most people get relief with today’s treatments for sciatica.

Still, one of the most potent ways of reducing future bouts of sciatica is exercise. Don’t stop your exercise program once your pain has subsided: Keep it up!

Doesn’t love conquer all?

Dr. Wallace: You’re always telling teens that they should not have sex before marriage when they are truly in love, even though sex is the ultimate in true love. I don’t think you have it right because you also say that love conquers all.

I think my boyfriend and I have it right because we thought we loved each other before, but after we started a sexual relationship nearly a year ago, we really fell in love with our hearts, souls and bodies. We are now definitely soul mates.

We are seniors in high school and have found our mates and will move in together as soon as we graduate and get a job.

Most teen sex is void of love and filled with an abundance of lust. By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Perhaps all you need to know about “They Came Together” is that the team that wrote and directed “Wet, Hot American Summer” brought it to the screen. Larky, witty and sometimes even wise, this spoof on every rom-com ever made is less a fully realized film than an extended skit, a series of set pieces that poke gentle and sometimes transgressively crude fun at the tropes of girl-meetsboy that have enchanted and addled audiences for generations. Trotting out each genre convention only to take the mickey out of them with vivisectionist glee, “They Came Together” winds up being oddly cathartic: It awakens the audience from its lingering Nora Ephron-induced coma with a splash of cold water delivered straight from a clown’s boutonniere.

“They Came Together” opens with two couples enjoying dinner, during which they exchange stories about how they met. Soon enough, Molly (Amy Poehler) and Joel (Paul Rudd) are regaling their glaze-eyed friends (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper) about how they got together “in a corny, romantic-comedy kind of way,” with Joel dutifully taking the role of handsome-but-not-threatening leading man who’s “just Jewish enough” and Molly being the “cute, klutzy” girl whose lack of coordination leads to all kind of adorkable mishaps.

In “They Came Together,” that includes falling down an entire flight of stairs, before going to her picture-perfect job at a quirky, “impossible not to like” candy shop on the Upper West Side where all proceeds go to charity and where, unbeknownst to her, she’s the target of a mega-competitor’s plot to put her out of business. You don’t need to have watched “You’ve Got Mail” 100 times – preferably in your pajamas, with a pint of Haagen-Dazs

It’s that scene to which the title refers – another little subversion of expectations at which the film gleefully excels.

The meet-cute, the inevitable breakup and all the de rigueur montages are included in “They Came Together,” which casts all the way back to “Crossing Delancey” for satirical inspiration (and perhaps the movie’s most breathtakingly tasteless scene). Written by David Wain and Michael Showalter and directed by Wain, this silly, slight, sunny homage to the Hollywood mainstream at its most ersatz and ingratiating features a slew of memorable sequences, including a time loop set at a neighborhood bar in

which the phrases “Tell me about it” and “You can say that again” take on the classic hilarity of this century’s “Who’s on first.” One of the film’s several running gags centers around the rom-com staple of stopping someone just before they leave with a soft, “Hey” and, when they turn around, saying an equally soft and sincere, “Thanks.”

“They Came Together” is anything but subtle, and the film’s tendency to put quotation marks around everything would easily grow as tiresome as the hackneyed cliches were it not for Poehler and Rudd, each of whom plays it utterly straight. (As usual, Rudd is particularly sensational in a role that asks him to be coarsely profane and wholesomely boyish in the same breath, a feat perhaps only he could pull off.) Helped along by supporting players Ed Helms and Christopher Meloni (featured in the film’s most amusing

scatological gag), as well as a raft of choice cameo appearances, Rudd and Poehler keep “They Came Together” floating along on a cloud of barely winking humor and their characters’ shared love of “fiction books,” Q-tips and coffee. “Who are you?” they keep asking each other, amazed at the banalities they have in common.

The answer, of course, is that they’re Harry and Sally and Sam and Annie and Sam and Isabelle and, finally, Joel and Molly – all wrapped into one cute, klutzy, vaguely ethnic package. And despite “They Came Together’s” alternately obvious and observant efforts to send them up, they’re impossible not to like.

• “They Came Together” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains profanity and sexual content. It runs 83 minutes.

The City of Joliet anticipates, based on last fiscal year's allocation, that it will receive an estimated CDBG entitlement grant in the amount of approximately $750,000 and $430,000 in HOME funds for FY 2015. These funding levels are contingent upon the final approval of the Federal Budget for FY 2015. In order to receive those funds, the City of Joliet must prepare a Five Year Consolidated Plan and a One Year Annual Action Plan for the use of the CDBG and HOME funds. At least 70% of the CDBG funds must benefit lowand moderate-income persons living in the City of Joliet. In preparing its CDBG and HOME application the City intends to afford citizens, local agencies, and interested parties the opportunity to become involved in the planning process.

The following types of activities may be eligible for funding under the CDBG program: Acquisition of property; disposition costs; improvements to public facilities, including the removal of architectural barriers; demolition and environmental clean-up; public services that are new or a quantifiable increase in the level of service; interim assistance; relocation payments for persons displaced as a result of a CDBG activity; rehabilitation of houses; code enforcement; special economic development activities; special activities undertaken by a community based development organization; home ownership assistance for purchase; planning; environmental; program administration; audit; and other miscellaneous activities.

All interested citizens are encouraged to attend this public hearing and they will be given the opportunity to present oral or written testimony concerning the needs of the City of Joliet and the use of CDBG and HOME funds to address those needs over the next five (5) years.
