A cacophony of sirens piece the suburban streets.

Those in earshot at first think there is an emergency nearby, but one look outside and it is obvious that this is not an ordinary call. Local fire trucks give way to those painted pink with writing all over them. This is a visit from the Joliet Chapter of Pink Heals, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women and others who are suffering.

“We’re really a grassroots organization,” Matt Fleck, co-founder of the Joliet area chapter said. “We want to help the person, not the cause.”

The Pink Heals motto is “Supporting Women, not causes” and it is at the heart of everything they do. Support, though, is not limited to women. When the tour stopped in Joliet on Sunday, they made a number of home visits, including one to a firefighter on medical leave and one to the widow of a Joliet police

The Joliet-area chapter of Pink Heals began in 2013 when husband-and-wife team Matt and Sandra Fleck of Joliet wanted to do something to make a difference. The Pink Heals organization appealed to them because the outreach is comprised entirely of volunteers, so 100 percent of what they collect goes back to the

Coal City Clothes Closet will close its doors October 1

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Coal City Clothes Closet will be closing its doors Oct. 1, according to Cathy Milne, who along with her husband Gordon started the free clothing store five years ago.

The Clothes Closet initially operated out of the Coal City United Methodist Church, then moved to a storefront at 595 S. Broadway St. before opening in its current location at 130 Blackstone St. in 2010.

The closet has outgrown that building, and Milne said a search for a bigger one has not yielded a possible new home. Milne started sending out letters requesting grants last October, but as the let-

ters came in denying her requests, she and Gordon discussed their next step.

“Whatever God leads us to do, we will do,” she said.

“This decision has been weighing heavy on our hearts.”

The closet provides free clothes, shoes, household items and food to those who come to visit their free store, but is involved in much more.

It has since gone on to create an account that provides lunch for Coal City students who didn’t have the money to eat, and a program where needy students were sent home every Friday with a backpack of food to get them through the weekend. Milne said someone has showed interest in continuing the back-

pack program.

Coal City Community Unit 1 School District Superintendent Kent Bugg said during Wednesday’s regular board meeting Wednesday that services for low-income families is an issue for the district.

“The Coal City Clothes Closet is closing and we lean heavily on them,” Bugg said to the board.

The Clothes Closet will no longer take donations, and will be extending hours as it nears the date of closure.

Starting Aug. 18 it will be open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m. The Clothes Closet will move forward with its back to school supplies program this summer. For information, call 815-661-1580.

Sunday saw a first for the Joliet-area chapter. When the group of vehicles and walkers did the annual walk around the neighborhood, Matt Fleck told participants they would be stopping at a house visit on the way.

They visited Joliet resident Sandy Gerrettie, widow of Joe Gerrettie, who was a Joliet police officer. Sandy Gerrettie also is battling cancer. The vehicles stopped and as happens on any home visit, everyone gave Sandy Gerrettie a hug, but everyone included all the people in attendance at the event at Joliet Memorial Stadium who went on the walk.

This year the Joliet tour raised money with the sale of T-shirts. The shirts were $10 for children’s sizes and $20 for adults. Survivors wore pink shirts, no matter whether they were men, women or a child and those in support wore gray.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – In 2006, seventh-grader Conlan Fay went to the old Shorewood Village Hall to see how local government works as part of a Troy Middle School youth and government group.

But he wasn’t as interested in the politics as he was with what he saw through a window to a closed-circuit cable TV setup: lights, camera and action.

Fay’s interest in TV started at the village and blossomed into a career.

Today, Fay is a senior at Columbia College studying TV production. But at the same time he is working part time as an engineer for the college’s TV department, ABC 7 in Chicago, WCIU, and has worked for ESPN shooting Northwestern University football games.

But that started to become reality at the Shorewood Village Hall, where he still works as the SCCTV channel 6 station director and chief engineer for the village’s audio-visual equipment.

“I just absolutely loved it when I started at the village,” Fay said. “I attended both board meetings after that and started taping them. I was asked if I wanted to start volunteering and I said yes.”

Fay was asked by Mayor Rick Chapman to start working as a part-time employee in the TV department in 2008.

“He showed so much interest in learning the system it was a no-brainer,” Chapman said. “He upgraded us to the digital systems and upgrad-

“I learned the ropes, watched and eventually started to run the cameras,” Fay said.

Since then, Fay started WJCA, the Joliet Catholic Academy TV station, with several classmates. He also facilitated the deals that brought video equipment from ABC 7 to the village.

Fay’s father, John Fay, said the interest in TV came to his son when he was a kid.

“When he was younger, his grandma bought him a handheld video camera,” John Fay said. “He was making little mock movies and skits and directing them at a

young age.”

Conlan Fay knew he was going to do TV production when he was a sophomore or junior at Joliet Catholic

Academy, which his father praised as following his dream.

“He truly has a passion for it,” John Fay said. “It’s won-

derful to see how people like him who love what he does and is good at it.”

Shorewood Community Development Director Karen James has worked with Conlan Fay since he started working for the village.

“He’s a part of the team,” James said. “He was handling equipment when he first got here, but he transitioned over to running it.”

Along with camera work, Conlan Fay was an asset to the village through his work in Boy Scouts. For his Eagle Scout project, he created a public service announcement poster for the village on proper disposal of leaves that ran on the village’s TV feed for several years.

“He’s one of the finest young men I’ve ever met when it comes to being dedicated to the job,” Chapman said.

While he lives in Chicago, Fay can be seen in the village these days taking video of the “Movies and Music in the Park” at One Towne Center Drive every Thursday.

“He’s still here taking care of us while he’s starting to move into major broadcasting,” Chapman said. “I’m not looking forward to him walking in someday and saying, ‘Hey, I have to leave.’ But it’s going to happen. It’ll be a bad thing for us but a good thing for Conlan.”

But the biggest supporters of Conlan Fay are his parents.

“I’m very proud of him for putting his mind to it, going for his dream and following through with it,” John Fay said. “It’s definitely a great feeling.”

Grace Episcopal Church NEW LENOX – In 1868, several families in the New Lenox area met in the Methodist Meeting House until they could find property to build their own church.

Within a year, a lot south of Hickory Creek was purchased and a Prairie Gothic Church was constructed and modeled after Christ Church in West Davenport, Iowa.

The sanctuary includes a freestanding altar framed by a ceiling-high Gothic arch.

The church is naturally lighted through antique-stained glass windows including a large rose window on the east wall. Many additions have been added to the church over the years, including the bell tower in 1902, the undercroft (the area directly below the sanctuary) dug out by hand and bucket in 1948, and the Parish Hall in 1978.

The undercroft was renovated in 1994 and now houses a library, three classrooms, a kitchen area and storage space.

The “little white church with red doors” has been a part of New Lenox for more than 125 years.

The then postcard photograph shows Grace Episcopal Church looking west from the northwest corner of Pine and Hickory Streets.

Renovations at the Rialto to start soon Terra cotta pieces to be delivered from England

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre is just a few weeks away from getting a $2.2 million facelift.

The historic theater expects to take the first of two deliveries totaling about 3,000 custom-molded pieces of terra cotta at the end of July, said Mike Biedron, building operations manager for the Rialto.

The clay-based building material is being produced by Shaw’s Terra Cotta of Darwen, England, one of three terra cotta manufacturers worldwide and the lowest bidder on the project, Biedron said.

Installation is expected to begin the first Monday in August, with the final product delivery expected in October.

The project was delayed a few weeks because of color-matching problems with the glazing, Biedron said.

“We were supposed to start installation the first of this month, but they’ve been having problems with color samples,” Biedron said. “The ones they have been sending back to us are just not quite right.”

About 90 percent of the pieces will be used on the parapet that rings the roof on the Chicago and Van Buren street faces of the 88-year-old building.

Other elements will be used to replace dilapidated window heads, jams and mullions.

All of the work is considered to be essential to the life of the building and the safety of the public. Funding was provided through a $2.2 million grant authorized about five years ago as part of a state capital spending bill. The money was released last October.

“This is a national landmark,” said Randy Green, the Rialto’s executive director. “[The project] had to be vetted through the state to ensure that the work being done was consistent with maintaining the historical nature of the building.”

The project involved meticulously locating each piece of terra cotta that needed to be replaced.

“Each piece taken off had to be cataloged and identified so we could put the puzzle back together again with the right pieces,” Green said.

The parapet alone has seven different levels of terra cotta pieces in repeating patterns, Biedron said.

During the process, engineers discovered additional issues around more than dozen terra cotta window and corner pieces on the building, Biedron said. The problems are cosmetic in nature and do not pose a safety threat, he said. The Rialto plans to use contingency funds to renovate them.

Biedron said most of the theater’s exterior problems were caused by moisture either penetrating or getting behind the terra cotta parapet and rusting out the metal brackets behind it.

The process was worsened by the use of silicone caulk, which seals in moisture.

“We now use a natural mortar that wicks out any trapped moisture,” Biedron said.

Maintenance will be a key issue moving forward.

“If the building is maintained, it can last forever,” Biedron said. “If not, you see yourself in conditions like we have now.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Reports that a man may have jumped off the Route 6 bridge into the DuPage River appear to be unfounded, according to local authorities.

About 5 p.m. Sunday two motorists stopped when they thought they saw a man jump off the bridge into the

DuPage River, Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said.

When authorities looked in the water, they saw no sign of the man. Channahon, Minooka, Wilmington and Troy fire departments sent personnel, along with water rescue boats and equipment, to the location, Wold said.

Although the search continued for several hours, no one was found. As they

searched, additional witnesses said they though a group of teenagers were videotaping from the west side of the river, Wold added.

As of 8:45 p.m. Sunday, there were no missing person reports, Wold said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Channahon Police Department at 815-4675152.

Teen killed by car on I-55 early Sunday

The Will County Coroner’s office described the

16-year-old as “a pedestrian” who was struck by a northbound vehicle near milepost 253.

State police were called to the scene at 1:49 a.m. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

State police said Sunday the crash investigation remains open, but no citations have been issued against the driver.

The victim’s identity was being withheld Sunday morning, according to the coroner’s office.

Parents who want to enter their children in the Three Rivers Beautiful Baby Contest need to get their applications in by Aug. 1. Only 10 children will be accepted in each category/age group.

The contest boundaries have been expanded to include Minooka and Shorewood residents, said contest chairman Amy Singletary, because they would like to see more babies involved, particularly boys.

There are eight different age and gender categories from six to 35 months. The babies are judged on their personalities and cuteness.

To enter your little bundle of joy, bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate for age category verification to the Arrowhead Community Center. Registration is free to local residents.

Judging will take place on Aug. 9 at 9:30 a.m. on the Family Stage in Central Park.

The day begins at 10 a.m. with an optional swim at the Tomahawk Aquatic Center at Central Park. Attendees will be served lunch, compliments of Channahon-Minooka McDonald’s restaurants, at 11:30 a.m.

Following lunch is an afternoon of rides and games especially accessible to those with special needs. The music will be turned down, carnival workers will be right there to lend assistance on and off rides and there won’t be any crowds to squeeze through to get to the rides.

There also will be games and prizes and everything is free of charge, thanks to the Rotary clubs and volunteers from Fantasy Amusements who give their time and resources to make it happen.

ShareFest of New Lenox organizers save home

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Volunteers with ShareFest of New Lenox will put faith into action to prevent three brothers from losing an almost 70-year-old home.

The home at 717 S. Prairie Road in New Lenox has belonged to brothers Ray, Don and Lawrence Sabec since their father built it in 1946. But ShareFest volunteers say it’s in a severe state of disrepair inside and out.

Starting Aug. 1, the volunteers – made up of contractors, electricians and plumbers – will begin renovating the home for ShareFest’s first home makeover project. The project is in line with the mission that inspires hundreds of service projects the nonprofit organization completes each fall.

“Our mission is to meet the deepest needs of the community. … We have a family who are not able to live in this home anymore,” said Gary Cheney, a ShareFest organizer. “If we can’t fix it in the next 30 days, they’re going to be homeless.”

Organizers have collected about $40,000 in funds and donations to complete the project but still are $10,000 short of their goal. Cheney said donations to the project, known as the Prairie House project, still can be made in cash or materials needed for the home’s construction.

Cheney said by the time the project is complete, which he estimates will be four to six weeks, about 150 volunteers will have participated. He said the home will not be rebuilt in “seven days like they do on TV” because it needs permits approved and inspection.

In the meantime, the brothers will stay in a living space provided by a ShareFest committee member free of charge, he said. Cheney said he had to personally ponder over choosing the brothers as the ones to help for the housing project.

While there are a number of families like the brothers in the same situation, Cheney said ShareFest needs to meet the needs in their community, and the committee was onboard with helping the brothers in this instance.

LOCAL BRIEF Drowning victim found in Kankakee River WILMINGTON – The body of the man who drowned in the Kankakee River was recovered Sunday evening.

Deputy Fire Chief Todd Friddle confirmed the 33-year-old man’s body was found shortly before 5 p.m. near the Des Plaines Conservation Area boat launch, west of I-55.

About 10:45 p.m. Friday, the victim and three other people were fishing off the shore of South Island Park.

Friddle said they were wading when the back current of the low head dam swept him under the water. His companions were able to notify emergency services shortly after 11 p.m., Friddle said.

Water rescue teams searched the river until 4 a.m. Saturday, possibly spotting the victim in the dam 200 feet from bank, but were unable to reach him because of the dangerous turbulence, Friddle said.

The search resumed after Saturday morning’s storm and continued Sunday.

The victim’s identity was being withheld Sunday night.

When ill health finally slowed Ray down (two back surgeries, two heart attacks and kidney problems), he did some of his own home modifications and oversaw the rest.

However, Ray continued taking daily walks with Buddy, his 12-year-old Shih Tzu – Ray in his scooter and Buddy on four paws, Bev said.

Ray also passed on his skills to his great-grandson, Spencer Haney, 25, of Joliet, Bev said.

Before Ray died, he ensured his legacy of service would continue.

“He gave all of his power tools to Spencer,” Bev said.

JOLIET – Five o’clock on Aug. 28, 1990, came and went.

A tornado had devastated Plainfield, and Bev Egly of Joliet waited anxiously for her husband Ray Egly to come home from work.

“That was in the day before cellphones,” Bev said.

Finally, Bev turned on the 10 p.m. news and there was Ray, being interviewed by CBS, she said. Ray had borrowed heavy-duty equipment from Material Services, where he worked as an electrical superintendent for 35 years, to clear the roadways to allow the passage of emergency service vehicles.

Faith and faithfulness, quiet and reserved, that was Ray Egly of Joliet, all the way to his death March 28 at the age of 85. His relationship with God translated into consistent and highly unselfish service to others, Bev said. Undemonstrative with affection, focused activity was Ray’s expression of love.

“He was a workaholic,” Bev said. “His children and grandchildren were his fun.”

Extremely frugal, Ray made most of the decisions in the family, Bev said, but they were always good decisions. In theory, Ray held family meetings, but he allowed himself two votes. Bev and his three children – Barbara Reeves of Joliet, Larry Egly of Texas and John Egly of Tennessee – each got one.

“I could never veto anything,” Bev said.

The second oldest in a family of nine children who helped raise his siblings, Ray cooked better than Bev did, she said. He had recently graduated from Joliet Township High School when Bev, then a sophomore, accompanied a friend to the auto repair shop where Ray worked.

Bev thought Ray was tall, handsome and fun; their first date was a hay rack ride and hot dog roast, she said. As Bev grew to know Ray, she also appreciated his deeper qualities, especially his honesty, loyalty, strong faith and fierce dedication to his church, Larkin Baptist Church, now Stone Hill Bible Church in Joliet.

“It’s because of Ray that I’m a Christian today,” Bev said.

Ray built wood model cars and airplanes with the boys; elaborate dollhouses with real wallpaper and little lights for the girls; and three-foot tall rocking horses for the grandchildren. Ray was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, Bev said, and could repair absolutely anything.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CASTLETON, Va. – Lorin Maazel, a world-renowned conductor whose prodigious career included seven years at the helm of the New York Philharmonic, died Sunday at his home in Virginia. He was 84.

Maazel died at Castleton Farms from complications following pneumonia, according to a statement by The Castleton Festival, an annual festival Maazel founded with his wife in 2009. Maazel was rehearsing and preparing for the festival at the time of his death, and the death also was announced on Maazel’s official website.

Known for his relentless energy and passion for precision, Maazel guided nearly 200 orchestras in at least 7,000 opera and concert performances during 72 years at the podium, according to a biography posted on his website.

Maazel, an American born in Paris in 1930, took his first violin lesson at age 5. A dazzling prodigy, he was 7 when he was invited by Arturo To-

scanini to conduct the NBC Symphony. His New York Philharmonic debut came five years later, in 1942. By age 15, he had conducted most of the major American orchestras.

“I am deeply saddened and shocked by the news of Lorin Maazel’s death,” New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert said in an emailed statement. “For decades he was a major force in the musical world, and truly an inspiration for generations of American musicians.”

A free concert scheduled Monday in Central Park will be dedicated to Maazel, the New York Philharmonic said in the statement.

WEST FRANKFORT – Former U.S. Rep. Ken Gray, who represented southern Illinois in Congress and earned the nickname the “Prince of Pork” for bringing $7 billion in projects to his district, died Saturday at age 89.

Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort said Sunday that Gray died at a hospital in Herrin after a long illness. Gray was first elected to Congress in 1954 and served 10 terms until high blood pressure forced him to retire in 1974. He returned to Congress in 1984 to serve two terms but retired again, citing a muscular disorder caused by a tick bite during a congressional visit to Brazil.

Gray, a Democrat, was a colorful figure during his time in Washington. He was

known for bringing federal projects to his depressed district, including a federal prison, an interstate highway, post offices and hospitals.

“They call Rend Lake pork,” Gray said in a 2008 interview with The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale. “Yet the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, six years ago when there was tremendous flooding, said that because of Rend Lake holding the water back, more than $100 million worth of property downstream was saved. If that is pork, pass me the plate, because I’ll take another heaping serving.”

In 2008, a portion of Interstate 57 in southern Illinois was named the “Ken Gray Expressway.” Gray had helped write the Interstate Highway Act that President Dwight Eisenhower signed in 1956.

Quinn repeats call for assault-weapons ban

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn is once again calling for legislation that would ban the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

The Democrat addressed the issue at a news conference on Sunday. He spoke in the Morgan Park neighborhood – a South Side Chicago community that’s been affected by gun violence.

Quinn is specifically pushing for the passage of the Illinois Public Safety Act. Under that proposed act, holders of Firearms Owners Identification Cards who now own assault weapons would be able to keep them. But they wouldn’t be allowed to transfer or sell them – except to a family member.

Quinn said war is “being waged on our streets.” And he said it’s a war fueled in part by the availability of military-style assault weapons.

Chicago police to make misconduct files public

CHICAGO – Chicago police misconduct investigation files will be made available to the public, after city attorneys decided not to continue fighting litigation pursuing their release, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office said Sunday.

The city previously had a long-standing policy of treating police misconduct incidents as personnel matters, which are exempt under FOIA laws.

“The city of Chicago had the option to continue to litigate this matter, but ultimately we concluded that – with proper safeguards in place – it will serve a greater public good to allow these investigations to be subject to open records laws,” city attorney Steve Patton said in a news

O’Hare halting train service to economy parking lots

CHICAGO – Some travelers flying in and out of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport are being advised to give themselves extra travel time starting this week.

The Chicago Department of Aviation says the “people mover” train that takes travelers and employees between economy parking lots and the terminals will be shut down beginning Monday.

Quincy man dies days after throat slashing

QUINCY – Authorities in western Illinois said a man whose throat was slashed last week has died.

Adams County Coroner James Keller said 56-year-old Robert J. Owens died Saturday evening at a Quincy hospital. Keller told the Quincy Herald-Whig that the cause of death was Wednesday’s stabbing.

Officials had charged 27-yearold Alex T. Koehler of Quincy with attempted first-degree murder.

He is jailed in Adams County on $1 million bond. He was arrested Wednesday afternoon just hours

after Quincy police found Owens with his throat slashed. Quincy police also said they have recovered the knife allegedly used in the attack. Prosecutors say the two men knew each other.

Mourners remember U of I student who died in Brazil

CHICAGO – Family and friends have remembered a University of Illinois doctoral student who died last month of an illness while studying in Brazil.

The university said 29-yearold Ashley S. Walls of Chicago died June 23 in Florianopolis in southeast Brazil. Walls’ memorial service was Saturday in Chicago at the UIC Forum.

She was studying sustainable communities and education policy.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Space station shipment launched from Virginia CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – A commercial cargo ship rocketed toward the International Space Station on Sunday, carrying food, science samples and new odor-resistant gym clothes for the resident crew.

Orbital Sciences Corp. launched its Cygnus capsule from the Virginia coast, its third space station delivery for NASA. “It’s like Christmas in July,” said Frank Culbertson, an executive vice president at Orbital Sciences and former astronaut.

Daylight and clouds limited visibility, but observers from North Carolina to New Jersey still had a shot at seeing the rising Antares rocket. It resembled a bright light in the early afternoon sky.

Its destination, the space station, was soaring 260 miles above Australia when the Cygnus took flight. The unmanned capsule should arrive there Wednesday.

This newest Cygnus contains more than 3,000 pounds of supplies, much of it food. Also on board: mini-satellites, science samples, equipment and experimental exercise clothes.

USGS: 7 small earthquakes shake central Oklahoma GUTHRIE, Okla. – The U.S. Geological Survey has recorded seven small earthquakes shaking central Oklahoma in a span of just about 14 hours.

They ranged from magnitude 2.6 to 2.9 and were centered in

the Guthrie, Jones and Langston areas, 15 miles to 30 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. The USGS said the quakes were recorded between 7:57 p.m. Saturday and 9:51 a.m. Sunday. No injuries or damage were reported.

Those follow four other quakes, including a 4.3-magnitude temblor near Langston recorded shortly after noon Saturday. The other Saturday morning quakes ranged in magnitude from 2.9 to 3.2.

Residents in central Oklahoma have said they want to know whether the surge in earthquake activity in the region is caused by oil and gas drilling operations in the area.

No Iran breakthrough with Kerry in Vienna VIENNA – Joint efforts by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and three other Western foreign ministers failed Sunday to advance faltering nuclear talks with Iran, with the target date for a deal only a week away.

“There has been no breakthrough today,” said British Foreign Secretary William Hague after meetings with Kerry and the foreign ministers of France, Germany and Iran.

The trip gave Kerry a chance to ease an espionage dispute with Germany. After meeting with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, both stressed the importance of their cooperation in solving global crises, yet offered little indication they have fully mended ties.

Foster children become focus of California schools

By LISA LEFF The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO – California is embarking on a first-of-its-kind attempt to improve the academic lives of foster youth by giving schools more money to meet their special learning and emotional needs and holding educators and administrators accountable.

But first, officials have to figure out how many schoolage foster children they have and where they are enrolled in a state that’s home to nearly one-fifth of the nation’s foster children.

Until now, no state has attempted to identify every foster child in its public schools or to systematically track their progress, much less funnel funds toward those students or require school districts to show they are spending the money effectively.

That changed in California this month as part of a new school funding formula that will direct billions of extra dollars to districts based on how many students they have with low family incomes, learning to speak

English or in foster care.

The state’s 1,043 school systems had to submit plans

by July 1 for how they intend to use the funds, a pot projected to reach at least $9.3 billion by 2021, to increase or improve services for those specific student groups.

During the next school year, districts also will have to report on their foster children’s absences, progress toward graduation, standardized test scores and other measures they already maintain for the other two target groups.

The moves are significant for an estimated 42,000 school-age foster children, less than 1 percent of the state’s 6.2 million public school students, said Molly Dunn, a lawyer with the Alliance for Children’s Rights, a Los Angeles-based advocacy group.

It means educators and elected officials have recognized the group is facing unique educational hardships from abuse or neglect, frequent moves and experiences in foster or group homes, Dunn said.

“It’s a whole new world,” she said. “They are a very

small group of students, they are lagging so far behind and for them to be included with these much larger populations of students focused the attention on the great level of need they have. And that’s only right because these are our kids, the state’s kids, and they are doing the worst.”

A report last year by the nonprofit research agency WestEd found California’s foster youth had the lowest math scores of any group, and had results in English comparable to those with disabilities or English learners.

Students in foster care also dropped out of high school at significantly higher rates than other at-risk students and were least likely to graduate. The authors noted that unlike racial minorities, English learners and impoverished students, the needs of foster youth had gone “unrecognized and unmet.”

Come fall, school districts are to receive weekly updates on which students are in foster care, the result of a new data-sharing agreement between the state education and social service departments.

Obama seeks support on immigrant kids The ASSOCIATED PRESS NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Matthews Burwell met privately with dozens of governors Sunday as the Obama administration tried to get support from the leaders of states that will host thousands of the Central American children who have crossed the Mexican border on their own since Oct. 1.

Governors of both parties expressed concerns about the cost to states, including pro-

viding public education for the children, according to those who attended the meeting. Burwell left the meeting through a side door without talking to reporters.

“Our citizens already feel burdened by all kinds of challenges. They don’t want to see another burden come into their state,” said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat.

“However we deal with the humanitarian aspects of this, we’ve got to do it in the most cost-effective way possible.”

Neither Burwell’s agency nor immigration officials check the immigration status of relatives who take custody of the immigrant children.

Since Oct. 1 more than 57,000 children have crossed the border alone. Most are from Honduras, El Salvador or Guatemala.

Pacific island of Niue hit by exodus

Sailboats sit off the coast June 4 near Alofi, Niue. Severe population decline on the tiny Pacific atoll is threatening a culture that dates back more than 1,000 years.

The Associated Press ALOFI, Niue – It was a school once, but there are no children here anymore. The lonely building on this remote Pacific island now contains only a punching bag that someone has strung from the classroom rafters, and a note scrawled on the chalkboard in Niuean: “Keep this place clean,” it says, “so it stays beautiful.”

While much of the world worries about how it will accommodate rapidly growing populations, some islands in the Pacific face the opposite dilemma: how to stop everybody from leaving.

The population decline on Niue, a lush coral atoll about the size of Baltimore, has been steady and relentless. In the 1960s, there were more than 5,000 people living here; today, there are fewer than 1,600. Fifteen times as many Niueans, some 24,000, now live across the ocean in New Zealand, 1,500 miles away.

The stories, songs and language that developed into the Niuean culture for more than 1,000 years are at risk of vanishing.

Speedo Hetutu, 54, attended the old school in the town of Avatele before it was abandoned and later used for workouts. There used to be six primary schools on the island; now there is only one. Other buildings where people used to work, pray or live now sit empty and in disrepair.

“People wanted to go away to look for a better life,” Hetutu says. “People are still searching.”

Other Pacific islands face similar struggles. The CIA estimates the population of the Cook Islands is declining by 3 percent per year, a rate second only to war-torn Syria.

Tokelau and American Samoa are also losing significant numbers of people. Even on archipelagos like Samoa and Tonga where the population is steady, people are abandoning the outer islands and moving to the main towns, where they can find better jobs, education and health care.

The exodus from Niue has been particularly acute because of its connection with New Zealand. Niue is self-governing but in free association with its wealthier neighbor

to the south, and Niueans are automatically New Zealand citizens.

While that relationship has lured away thousands of young Niueans, it has also paid the bills for those who have remained. New Zealand has helped establish a $44 million trust fund and gives annual aid that amounts to about $10,000 per resident, helping fund the government work that accounts for most of the island’s jobs. Some Niueans living abroad send back remittances.

Roderick F. Baker Jr., a longtime resident of Joliet and Naperville, served his country as a pilot in the U.S. Marines.

After being discharged as a captain, Rod learned the automobile trade at various dealerships before buying his own Ford franchise. He opened Rod Baker Ford on Sept. 30, 1963 in the heart of Plainfield.

Rod’s wife Olga worked alongside her husband nearly every day, starting a trend of family involvement that continues today, including the Bakers’ grandchildren Roderick F. Baker IV (Ricky) and Christina Baker.

“When they opened the dealership my dad (Roderick F. ‘Rick’ Baker III), an only child, was only 10 years old, and with both parents at the store that is where he spent most of his time after school,” Christina said. “He would help out wherever he could, doing things like sweeping the floors in the shop.“Its not hard to see my dad’s passion for the business

and the brand, so it wasn’t surprising that he eventually took the business over in 1991, around the time they started building a new building on Rte. 30,” Christina said.

Rod Baker Jr. passed away in 1994 at the age of 74, when Ricky was 10 and Christina was 5. Olga remained involved with the dealership as long as she could, and passed away in 2004.

Christina Baker believes the business has survived for half a century because of her family’s strong will, passion and perseverance, even through hard times.

“My grandpa was determined on treating people fairly and living up to our motto, ‘Home of the No Hassle Deal,’” Christina said. “That’s something that has stuck in our hearts and goals for the business.

“Working with family isn’t always easy,” Christina Baker said with a chuckle. “But at the end of the day work is work and family is everything, and we will always be there for each other.”

MOSCOW – Russia’s foreign ministry said Sunday that a Ukrainian shell hit a Russian border town, killing one person and seriously injuring two others. Ukraine denied firing a shell into Russian territory.

President Vladimir Putin expressed “grave concern” over the incident, Russian news agencies quoted his spokesman as saying. A statement from Russia’s foreign ministry labeled the event a “provocation,” and warned of the possibility of “irreversible consequences, the responsibility for which lies on the Ukrainian side.”

Russia said the shell hit the courtyard of a residential building in the Russian town of Donetsk – near the Ukrainian city of the same name that has become a rebel stronghold – early Sunday. Ukraine’s east

has been mired in a pro-Russian separatist insurgency against the Kiev government.

Ukrainian officials denied that any Ukrainian shells had fallen on Russian territory.

Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, was quoted by Interfax Ukraine as saying that Ukrainian forces “do not fire on the territory of a neighboring country. They do not fire on residential areas.”

He placed blame for the attack on the rebels themselves.

Russia has made repeated claims that settlements along its porous border with Ukraine – which the West and Kiev say is a key supply route for the rebels – have been hit by Ukrainian fire, but no deaths have been previously reported.

Booming economy solves problems Unemployment in the United States fell in June to 6.1 percent from 6.3 percent in May, the lowest rate since the fall of 2008.

That’s when financial giant Lehman Brothers collapsed, taking with it in house-of-cards fashion other Wall Street firms and a good chunk of the auto industry, along with a lot of other luckless companies.

That prompted an unprecedented government bailout that pumped billions of dollars into banks and businesses and continues even to this day, in much-diminished form, through the Federal Reserve’s bond buying program.

Now, thanks to the robust economic recovery, that pro-

gram may be nearing its end.

The economy added 288,000 jobs last month and 2.5 million jobs in the last 12, the fastest annual growth since 2006.

According to The Associated Press, the 200,000-plus monthly job gains over the past five months have been the best stretch since the 1990s tech boom – although we must hope this growth comes to a better ending than the subsequent tech bust.

Job gains were spread across the economy – factories, retailers, financial firms, restaurants and bars all added substantially to their payrolls. And employment got a boost from another surprising quarter

– government hiring, which began to tail off in 2007 and began shedding employees every year from 2009 to 2013.

Public-sector hiring has increased by 54,000 jobs so far this year, good news for hollowed-out local and state governments.

The first-quarter 2.9 percent decline in gross domestic product is increasingly looking like a weather-related anomaly.

Economists polled by the British newspaper The Guardian seemed to agree that the world’s largest economy is in good shape with strong underlying momentum.

Wage growth has remained at an anemic 2 percent a year during the recovery, well below the historical average of 3.5 percent. The U.S. economy depends heavily on consumer spending and 2 percent a year is not going to do much to help that. Some think wages will pick up along with the economy, a view that seems to have not yet caught on with employers.

The other anomaly is that workforce participation – the number of Americans working or actively looking for work – is stuck at a low of just over 62 percent. The problem is no longer purely economic; the jobs are there, and employers are hiring.

It might be structural: workers stuck in the wrong place or with the wrong skills.

Or it could be societal: Older workers who lost their jobs and are content to scrape along until retirement age and Social Security or desperate workers who are willing to work off the books.

A booming economy solves all kinds of problems and ultimately these may be two of them.

Who gets varicose veins?

“Anyone can be a candidate for varicosity in the legs—both men and women,” Malinowski said. “Usually people who have jobs where they stand a lot. Varicose veins can also be inherited or can be brought on by pregnancy. ” While they can be prevented by wearing support hose early on, it’s still important to treat varicose and spider veins “because they will only get worse,” Malinowski said.

“They will not go away on their own. If varicose veins are not treated they can lead to terrible hyperpientation and ulcers in the legs,” she said. “There is also the risk of blood clots. The legs can become painful and

can also burn and itch and may cause trouble sleeping at night.”

How can one know if he or she suffers from varicose veins?

After an initial consultation at Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, an ultrasound study will be done to determine the location and extent of the abnormal veins in both legs. After that, a treatment plan will be developed to properly treat the vein disease.

Treatments can range from injection sclerotherapy to laser treatments. The procedures, which take about 45 minutes, are done in the office under local anesthetic.

But a word to the wise--the procedure may not be covered by insurance.

Komp turns in ‘career’ day in win Ward, Zolecki next-best in one-day event at Wedgewood Golf Course

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ever since winning the Joliet Park District’s Junior Golf title in 2005, Brian Komp set his sights on one day capturing top honors in the JPD’s Men’s championship.

Although the former Joliet West and University of St. Francis player had been in the mix before, other quality competitors were able to prevent him from achieving that goal. But with just one round determining this year’s winner because of heavy rainfall that wiped out Saturday’s opening action at Inwood, Komp turned in what he considered to be his best effort yet at Wedgewood Golf Course.

His 3-under-par 69 did the job in Sunday’s 20-man tournament as it provided him with a two-stroke cushion over runner-up Matt Ward, a Plainfield South graduate, who was the only other competitor to finish below par.

Former JPD Mens winner Jon Zolecki turned in an evenpar 72 while two-time defending champion Jeff Petrovic shot a 73 and then won a scorecard tiebreaker over Jim Bolin, who also recorded a 73, to finish fourth.

“This was my best round ever at Wedgewood,” Komp said. “Since it was a one-day round, I just had to focus to shoot my best score and I shot a career-low. I’ve been wanting to win this since winning the Junior Tournament. So I finally was able to get there.

“I got new irons three days ago, so I just hit a couple hundred balls and got them dialed in and it worked. I played pretty well in the Joliet Amateur, so winning that is my next goal.”

Ward, who will be a junior on the team at Valparaiso University this fall, was also pleased following his best effort to date in a JPD championship.

“I played pretty well, and I’m obviously happy with today’s score since this was one of my best rounds at Wedgewood,” Ward said. “I finished third or fourth a couple of years

ago and played in the last group a couple of times when it went two days.

“Playing just one day makes it a lot different since you’re trying to go low and just see what happens out there. I struggled a little bit off of the tee but after that, I played really solid.

I feel like my game is getting a lot better going into the school season.”

Zolecki, who competed at Minooka before playing at the University of St. Francis, finished three strokes in back after settling for even-par on the damp Wedgewood layout.

Petrovic, a Minooka teacher and the baseball coach who has enjoyed great success in the tournament ended up tied with Bolin with rounds of 73, and a scorecard tiebreaker gave the 2012 and 2013 champion fourth place this time.

Christopher Jones was next with a 74, Brian Legan and Ryan Patera both shot a 75 and J.R. Ruiz and Steve Tubman each turned in a 76. Fifteen of the competitors finished within 10 strokes of the champion.

Pedro Alarcon won a scorecard tiebreaker over Jose Ramirez in the Mens A division with scores of 67. Alarcon shot a 79 with a 12 handicap while Ramirez turned in an 80 with a 13 handicap. Dave Balick claimed third place with a 69 total (80 and 11).

“I haven’t been playing well but today somehow the stars aligned,” Alarcon said. “For my level, a 79 is a really good score.

I wasn’t playing that well yesterday so I was glad when they told me to go home early. When you love to play golf and you get a trophy for doing it, that’s even better.”

In the Men’s B division, Ricardo Gonzalez won the title with a 66 thanks to a round of 82 and a 16 handicap. Sean Whitfield was second with a 72 (86 and 14) while John Matulik placed third with a 73 total (92 and 19). Sunday’s other champion was in the Women’s A division, where Edie Sims finished with a score of 75 after a round of 89 and a 14 handicap.

Filas, Bandy finish 1 stroke off the pace

JOLIET – Chi Kovel admits that he hadn’t been golfing all that well lately.

But if there was a competition where he hoped to turn in a good score, it would be at the Joliet Park District’s Senior Scratch championship against many of his longtime friends.

In a tournament that was reduced to one day because of heavy rains, Kovel turned in that good round on Sunday at Wedgewood Golf Course and as a result, he repeated as the winner in the event and also captured his third title in four years.

Kovel was one-under on the back nine to finish with a oneover-par 73 to claim top honors in the event by one stroke over Bob Filas and Mike Bandy.

Filas took second place after winning a scorecard tiebreaker.

Paul Boland, Tony Gerl and Ron Klover all tied with rounds of 75 but Boland placed fourth and Gerl was fifth as a result of the tiebreaker.

With only one round being contested, things figured to be very competitive, and they were, as 16 of the 20 entrants finished within eighth strokes of the leader.

“I play with these guys all year long and we’re all real close,” Kovel said. “Actually, most of the guys have been playing better than me this week. But they always laugh at me and tell me that I always play well in the tournaments, and I can’t explain why that is.

“But I had a good round and I was happy with it. If somebody had told me that I’d get a 73, I wouldn’t have even played, since that would have been a good score. In about the last week I’d been scoring good in our league, but I haven’t had

good consistency this year.”

With Saturday’s round at Inwood wiped out because of the wet conditions, bragging rights among some of the familiar names in Joliet golf came down to an 18-hole shootout on a course that obviously had some damp spots. To compen-

sate for the wet conditions, players were allowed to lift, clean and play.

“It’s a great time,” said Kovel, who started playing on the course when it opened and he was 13 years old and hadn’t won a JPD championship event until his first Senior Scratch.

“Guys like Dan Warren, Kirk Stevens and I have 30 years of golf together. When you’re going up against your buddies, winning this feels a little nicer.”

“The two-day tournament is a little bit nicer but what are you going to do? Starting from scratch on this course, everybody was equal off the tees. I got lucky and had a good round.

Bob Filas has been gunning for me because he knows that now I get another whole year of them calling me ‘champ.’ That makes it fun.”

Dan Caporusso shot a 76 to take seventh place while Dan Warren fired a 77 to finish eighth. Dan Kelly and Kirk Stevens tied for ninth place after posting rounds of 78.

In the Senior A division (low handicap), Tony Holguin, Jr. followed up on his Mens A title from a year ago to turn in a net 67 score after shooting a 77

with a 10 handicap.

Gerald Winbush was next with a 68 (81 and 13), Phil Krall took third with a 69 (79 and 10) and John Beck was fourth with a 72 (82 and 10).

“I moved in divisions, so this was my first time with the seniors,” Holguin said. “The golf course was very nice. It was a little wet, but we all had to play the same course. We couldn’t have played yesterday since the course was unplayable, so it came down to an 18hole tournament and we were lucky that we were able to play even one round.”

Larry Tallarita captured top honors in the Senior B division with a 68 score (97 and 29 handicap) to finish two strokes ahead of Doug Ceci (91 and 21).

Jim Wendell claimed third place with a 71 (88 and 17) while Vaughn Whitfield finished fourth with a score of 72 (97 and 25).

Elwood 14s headed for Ripken Experience

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The parents were sitting in a pizza restaurant in Coal City when the idea came up that maybe their kids could play in one of those weeklong baseball tournaments at Cooperstown, New York.

They met more times and eventually everyone agreed they wanted to do it.

Meanwhile, Scott Sebby, a coach for the Elwood Baseball and Softball Association’s only baseball team for 14-year-olds, was telling a fellow worker about the idea, and he said, “You should look into The Ripken Experience.”

Sebby told Elwood manager Bob Dockendorf, who also is the EBSA president, about the suggestion. He researched it, and, “Wow! It’s cheaper per kid than Cooperstown, and if you go to Cooperstown, what are the moms going to do?” Dockendorf said.

“We’re not one of those travel teams that plays all over.

We’re a home-league team. So this is our families’ vacation, too, and we didn’t know if we wanted to dedicate vacation to being out in a cornfield.”

They’re not. Instead, they are leaving Saturday for the Ripken Experience tournament next Sunday through Friday at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Dockendorf discussed the team and readying for the event during his team’s practice last Thursday at Silver Cross Field.

“I emailed [Slammers general manager] Chris Franklin, and he said the Slammers are

He made about 15 new friends allowing us to practice here.”

The Elwood team plays in the Coal Valley Pony League against teams from towns such as Coal City, Gardner, Seneca, Wilmington and Braidwood.

This group is 34-6 in the past two seasons, including 16-4 this year.

The tournament at Myrtle Beach, of course, may present

a different caliber of opponent from what Elwood has been facing.

“Teams come from all over, a lot of them probably are good travel teams, but it won’t matter,” Dockendorf said. “We have six games guaranteed and we want our kids to go out and have fun playing there, not worry about winning or losing.”

The baseball complex is about five miles inland, but the Elwood contingent will be staying on the Atlantic Ocean shoreline. “The Ripken people

are giving us water passes, mingolf passes, things like that, too,” Dockendorf said.

Dockendorf said the Elwood roster does not feature big kids.

They’re not a bunch of sluggers and their pitchers do not light up the radar guns.

“We focus on baserunning, moving runners along,” Dockendorf said. “We made only 20 errors all season. Our pitchers mix it up because they aren’t hard throwers. We make other teams go station to station.”

der goes like this: Bobby Dockendorf, Cole Sebby, Greg Honiotes, Kyle Hinkle, Brian White, Lucas Franc, Tim Bell, Jake Lucky and Cameron Johnson.

The other team members, all of whom will play at Myrtle Beach, are Trenton Akre, Cory Sebby, Ross Heimlich and Nick Salabura.

Dockendorf’s assistants, in addition to Scott Sebby, are Brian White Sr., Mike Johnson and Don Hinkle, who have been with him for several years.

“Scott and I started together when our kids were in T-ball,” Dockendorf said.

The camaraderie is evident even at practice.

“A lot of our kids grew up on the same block in Elwood,” Dockendorf said. “Hinkle moved to Downers Grove and White moved to Manhattan and they both stayed with us.”

Hinkle will be a freshman at Downers Grove North in the fall. Bobby Dockendorf will attend Joliet Catholic and Honiotes, Johnson and Bell are headed to Joliet Central, all with intentions of playing baseball.

The rest of the roster will be eighth-graders in the fall.

They’re not all in the same class in school, but they have that small-town tightness.

“Our team is the only 14-year-old baseball team in the EBSA, but we have 130-ish kids in our program, and that’s with 2,100 residents,” Dockendorf said. “In our heyday, we had 200 kids. It dropped to 97 at one time and now it’s popped back up to the high 130s and is holding steady.”

Seth Granger and Jake Gronsky had three hits apiece for the Slammers on Sunday.

Both recent additions drove in a run and scored one.

Colin Gotzon started for Joliet. David Kubiak made his Slammers’ debut out of the

bullpen, pitching in the ninth and 10th innings. He struck out the first two batters in the 10th, but the Boomers then loaded the bases before a flyout ended it.

In the Slammers’ 7-6 loss to Schaumburg in Game 2 of Saturday night’s doubleheader, Grant DeBruin homered to get Joliet on the board early.

That was after DeBruin’s 14game hitting streak ended in Game 1.

Chris Epps and Russell Moldenhauer had RBI singles and DeBruin chipped in a sacrifice fly in a three-run fourth inning that tied it at 4. Casper, who had two hits, singled and scored the run that tied it at 5 in the fifth. Epps tripled and

Moldenhauer doubled in the seventh and final inning to get Joliet back within 7-6, but that’s where it ended.

The Frontier League AllStar break has arrived. The Slammers will host the Dutch National Women’s Fastpitch Softball team in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Monday at Silver Cross Field.

Goetze scores late to give Germany the World Cup

By MATTIAS KAREN The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – With two quick touches, Mario Goetze ended Germany’s 24-year wait for another World Cup title.

Goetze scored the winning goal in extra time to give Germany a 1-0 victory over Argentina on Sunday in a tight and tense World Cup final that came down to one piece of individual skill.

Goetze, who wasn’t born when West Germany beat Argentina in the 1990 final, controlled a cross with his chest in the 113th minute and in one fluid motion volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Sergio Romero and inside the far post.

It was a goal that gave Germany its fourth World Cup title in its eighth final, and left Argentina star Lionel Messi still walking in the shadow of his compatriot Diego Maradona, who led his country to the 1986 title.

Goetze had come on as a

substitute for Miroslav Klose toward the end of regulation time and the 22-year-old midfielder’s fresh legs made the difference.

Andre Schuerrle broke down the left flank, sending his cross into the area, and the Bayern Munich player did the rest with a clinical finish. The goal echoed that of Andres Iniesta’s four years ago, when the midfielder scored in similar fashion but from the other side of the area to give Spain a 1-0 extra time win over the Netherlands.

For Germany, the win ends a string of near misses since winning its last major title at the 1996 European Championship. The team lost the 2002 World Cup final to Brazil and lost in the semifinals in both 2006 and 2010.

It is Germany’s first World Cup title as a unified nation, having won as West Germany in 1954, 1974 and 1990. It was also the third World Cup final between these countries and had been billed as a matchup

between the perfect team and the perfect individual, pitting Germany’s machine-like unit against the brilliance of Messi, the four-time world player of the year. But in the biggest game of his career, Messi came up short.

He had one good chance to score when he was sent free in the area just after the halftime break, but sent his shot wide of the far post. It was a difficult angle, but still the type of chance he so often converts for Barcelona.

Messi threatened intermittently throughout the match, but was effectively neutralized for long stretches. When he did try to break forward with one of his quick dribbles, he was surrounded by the German defense.

His free kick in the 120th minute went well high.

When the final whistle blew, Germany players collapsed in a pile in the middle of the pitch, while Messi walked with his hands on his hips toward the center circle.

INDIANS 3, WHITE SOX 2

White Sox fall short The ASSOCIATED PRESS CLEVELAND – The White Sox staggered into the All-Star break with a tough loss.

Javy Guerra gave up a tworun homer in the eighth to Yan Gomes that erased the Sox’s comeback in the top of the inning, sending the White Sox to a 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.

After winning five of six, the Sox have dropped four of their past five and are 45-51 on the season. It’s easy to see why manager Robin Ventura wants to see more consistency from his team after the break.

“I’d like it to be better,” Ventura said of the record. “We’ve had spurts where we play well, we’ve had spurts where we didn’t. You wish you were in a better spot but you come back and try to clean that stuff up.”

Gomes drove in all three Cleveland runs. His home run to right off Guerra (0-2) came after the Sox scored two runs

in the top of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.

Nick Swisher led off with a single before Gomes, who also had an RBI single in the second, hit a 1-1 pitch into the Sox’s bullpen.

“A slider, came out, wasn’t a very good one,” Guerra said. “[Gomes] did what he was supposed to.”

Trevor Bauer, whose 10 strikeouts were a career high, blanked the Sox for 6 2-3 innings, but the Sox scored two runs off Bryan Shaw (4-1) to take the lead.

Conor Gillaspie singled with one out, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Gordon Beckham’s single up the middle.

After a groundout, Leury Garcia sent a roller to the right side. Second baseman Jason Kipnis tried to make a backhand stop near the bag, but the ball went under his glove and rolled into center field, allowing Beckham to score.

CHICAGO – Chris Johnson had three hits, including his third homer in two days, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Cubs, 10-7, on Sunday to remain near the top of the NL East at the All-Star break.

The Braves are one percentage point behind division-leading Washington. Atlanta (5243) has won three of four since a four-game losing streak.

Johnson hit a long drive to straightaway center field for a three-run shot in a four-run third inning against Travis Wood (7-8). Johnson also went deep twice in the Braves’ 11-6 victory at Wrigley Field on Saturday.

Atlanta played without struggling second baseman Dan Uggla, who was suspended by the team for the final game before the All-Star break. The

Braves announced the punishment on their Twitter feed, with no further explanation.

“I’m not going to say anything other than that it’s an internal matter,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said before the game.

Arismendy Alcantara and Chris Coghlan each hit a tworun homer off All-Star Julio Teheran (9-6) for the last-place Cubs, who have lost eight of 10.

It was the first career shot for the 22-year-old Alcantara, who also had a bloop double in the first and is batting .391 (9 for 23) in his first five major league games.

The Cubs (40-54) scored three times in the eighth, highlighted by John Baker’s tworun double, but Jordan Walden got Junior Lake to fly out to center with a runner on second for the final out of the inning.

All-Star Craig Kimbrel then worked the ninth for his 29th save in 33 opportunities.

Keselowski dominates in N.H. victory

By DAN GELSTON The Associated Press LOUDON, N.H. – Brad Keselowski hopped out of his car and grabbed an oversized broom to give a playful sweep of all the confetti already collected around his Ford.

He then truly savored his victory, snagging a New England lobster and raising it in triumph.

Keselowski survived without a cut, splinter or pinch. He didn’t even fumble his championship crustacean.

For once, his victory celebration was as perfect as his per- Brad formance on the Keselowski track.

He completed a flawless weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and won the Camping World RV Sales 301 race Sunday under a greenwhite checkered finish. Keselowski followed up Saturday’s Nationwide Series victory with his first Sprint Cup win at New Hampshire, dominating in the No. 2 Ford for his third victory of the season.

The 2012 Sprint Cup champion is now tied with Jimmie Johnson for the series lead in wins.

“This was just such a phenomenal weekend and these don’t happen that often,” he said.

Keselowski had been in a slump with, of all things, his Victory Lane fun.

He needed four stitches to close a wound he received during his Victory Lane celebration in the Sprint Cup race at Kentucky.

He tried to open the bottle of champagne by hitting it against a podium, and the bottle broke and cut his hand.

Keselowski dropped the American flag out of his No. 22 Ford on Saturday and it was retrieved by an official to let the frivolity continue.

‘The perfect personality for the job’ Therapy dog at children’s advocacy center brings comfort to all

dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In many ways Jackson, the 5-year-old yellow labrador retriever belonging to Cheri and Kurt Johnson, is a bit of a Joliet-area celebrity.

For seven years, Jackson has been a familiar face at the Will County Advocacy Center in Joliet, where he greets children who have experienced physical or sexual abuse, plays with their families and cheers staff.

The Exchange Club of Joliet recently honored Jackson with its “Contributing Service Award,” the first non-human to receive it. He competes in agility, obedience and nosework. He’s even done a little modeling for Science Diet dog food.

But if Cheri puts a therapy dog vest on Malley – Jackson’s adopted sister, also a yellow labrador retriever and therapy dog at the Will County Child Advocacy Center – and then walks out the door with her, Jackson behaves like any ordinary dog would.

“He gets very put out,” Cheri said.

When Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow first heard of therapy dogs, he thought they’d be a good match for the advocacy center. Unfortunately, the budget for this nonprofit agency didn’t allow it. So when Cheri, his executive assistant, offered Jackson, Glasgow was thrilled.

“He’s got the perfect personality for the job,” Glasgow said. “You can literally see the tension leaving the children’s bodies. They’re in a much better place when they go in for the interview.”

It’s not the just the children who benefit, he added.

He recalled one particularly traumatized mother who found comfort in Jackson, too. She had just sat down with her child when Jackson walked

“She remarked how she felt the stress leaving her body when she started petting the dog,” Glasgow said.

Still, if Cheri hadn’t helped her sister research dog breeds at the International Kennel Club dog show at McCormick Place in Chicago, and Jackson hadn’t been a squirrel chaser, the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center might not have any of its therapy dogs.

While at the show with her

sister, Cheri saw a booth seeking volunteers to help train puppies for Leader Dogs for the Blind. Because Cheri always had raised and trained dogs, she saw this as the perfect opportunity to take something she enjoyed and help others.

During the next eight years, Cheri and Kurt trained seven puppies. They became particularly attached to one yellow labrador retriever – Cooper – that the organization had selected to be part of its breed-

ing stock. Because the Johnsons liked Cooper so much, they asked to train one of his offspring, Jackson.

Jackson was 7 weeks old when he came to live with Cheri and Kurt. Despite formal training through Leader Dogs for the Blind, Jackson could not overcome his fascination for squirrels and would be unable to safely guide a visually impaired individual.

Cheri was thrilled to keep Jackson, but because he was a

working dog, he needed a new job. Agility classes at Lucky Dog Academy in Plainfield helped, but Cheri wanted a lofty purpose for Jackson, too.

The answer was becoming certified through Therapy Dogs International. Jackson and it were a perfect fit, as Cheri knew he would be.

“He passed right away,” Cheri said.

After Cheri saw how well Jackson did with visits at what is now Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, she approached Glasgow with the idea of allowing Jackson to work with the advocacy center, too.

In 2012, Glasgow established the Paws-4-Kids program and brought Jackson on board.

After Cheri and Kurt adopted Malley, they certified Malley, too.

Friends of Cheri’s had raised Malley, now Jackson’s sister, for Leader Dogs for the Blind. But Malley wound up with kennel stress, which disqualified her for the program, Cheri said, so she and Kurt adopted her. Malley only works at the advocacy center a couple times a month.

“Jackson is snuggly, cuddly and in tune with each person’s emotions,” Cheri said. “Malley is not as affectionate.”

Glasgow said because 350 to 450 young abuse victims are interviewed at the center each year, he would like to expand the Paws-4-Kids program with other certified therapy dogs.

LOS ANGELES – Ten years ago, Shirley Worthington rushed Tigger to the vet when the dog’s mouth started bleeding. When she was told he had cancer, she knew to blame her heavy smoking, an addiction she couldn’t kick until after her pet died.

Secondhand smoke can cause lung and nasal cancer in dogs, malignant lymphoma in cats and allergy and respiratory problems in both animals, according to studies done at Tufts University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts, Colorado State University and other schools.

The number of pets that die each year from tobacco exposure isn’t available, but vets know from lab tests and office visits that inhaling smoke causes allergic reactions, inflammation and na-

sal and pulmonary cancers in pets, said Dr. Kerri Marshall, the chief veterinary officer for Trupanion pet insurance.

Despite Worthington’s certainty about the cause of her dog’s death, more research needs to be done before veterinarians can definitively say whether a dog’s cancer was caused by secondhand smoke or something else, said Dr. Liz Rozanski, whose research at Tufts College focuses on respiratory function in small animals.

Pets aren’t mentioned in this year’s surgeon general’s report, but in 2006, it said secondhand smoke puts animals at risk.

The Legacy Foundation, the nation’s largest nonprofit public health charity, encouraged smokers to quit for the sake of their pets, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals urged making homes with pets smoke-free.

John Wesley, an 18th-century English preacher, said, “Once in seven years I burn all my sermons; for it is a shame if I cannot write better sermons now than I did seven years ago.”

Last week I mentioned the Rule of Seven. In a no-trump contract, when a defender leads a suit in which declarer has only one top-trick stopper (usually the ace), the Rule of Seven tells declarer how long to hold up that stopper.

He subtracts from seven the total number of cards his side has in the suit and holds up for that number of rounds.

When declarer is only worried about the suit led, the Rule of Seven works fine. But it needs careful handling.

In this deal, how should South plan the play in three no-trump after West leads the spade two?

The Rule of Seven is primarily useful when the opponents have eight cards in their suit dividing 5-3. Declarer holds up his ace for two rounds (seven minus five is two), so that the defender with the long suit can cash his two remaining winners only if he has an entry.

What if their eight-card fit is breaking 4-4? Then there is no point in holding up, because declarer cannot break the opponents’ communication in the suit.

They will always get three tricks (unless declarer can immediately run for home).

In this deal, if South takes the first trick and drives out the diamond ace, he loses only one diamond and three spades. But if he ducks his spade ace at trick one, East might notice the interesting heart situation and shift to the heart king. Then South will lose one spade, three hearts and one diamond to end down one.

No treatment can fully reverse or stop COPD. But not smoking, taking medications, making environmental changes and using supplemental oxygen can help.

Pulmonary rehabilitation can take these improvements a step further. Pulmonary rehab combines exercise therapy, breathing retraining, patient education and psychological support. It helps to improve quality of life, and it allows you to carry out day-to-day activities with greater ease and independence.

Exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, is the primary focus.

Exercise increases your endurance and strength. This improves symptoms, which allows you to perform more normal daily activities. Exercise therapy typically

Another important part of pulmonary rehab is breathing retraining. One of the biggest problems COPD patients have is running out of air during exertion. In rehab, you’ll learn to modulate your breathing, which will help improve your stamina and decrease breathlessness. You should be able to get through everyday activities more easily – and possibly even resume activities you’ve had to give up.

You also will learn to take a more active role in managing your illness. For example, most people with COPD take an inhaled medicine to open up their airways. Your doctor probably told you when and how to use an inhaler when he or she first prescribed it. During rehab, a nurse might watch as you use it to ensure you’re doing it correctly. Or you might get some tips on how to use oxygen therapy most

effectively.

The final piece is psychological support. Ongoing breathing difficulties can lead to depression and anxiety. Therapy can help you sort through your feelings and teach stress reduction techniques to help you cope.

A patient of mine was a brilliant and tireless journalist.

He also drank a lot and smoked several packs a day. It was what journalists did.

By age 50, he was easily winded and exhausted by mid-afternoon. By age 60, he became breathless doing nothing more than walking across the room. He still wrote with great skill, but he could work only on occasional stories and had to work from home.

A pulmonary rehabilitation program improved his level of function to the point where he could return to the newsroom several times a week. It was a great gift – to him and to his colleagues.

Upon execution of the Memorandum of Sale by Buyer and Seller's Superintendent or his designee, the earnest money check of the successful bidder shall be retained by the School District as security for Buyer closing on the sale and the auction shall be closed. The earnest money checks of the unsuccessful bidders shall be returned immediately after the close of the auction. Buyer's bid shall be firm and irrevocable until such time as Seller either rejects or accepts the bid, which action shall occur not later than fourteen days after the close of the auction. Upon acceptance, Seller's President and Secretary shall sign the Memorandum of Sale. If the bid is not accepted within the fourteen days provided for above, the earnest money shall be promptly returned to the otherwise successful bidder. The Memorandum of Sale may be recorded with the Will County Recorder of Deeds at the expense of the party recording the Memorandum.

The minimum sale price for the Real Estate shall be THREE HUNDRED SEVENTY-FIVE THOUSAND Dollars ($375,000). The earnest money and the balance of the purchase price shall be paid in the form of a Certified Check or a Cashier's Check made payable to New Lenox School District Number 122.

(1) TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($25,000) of the purchase price shall be paid at the time of the auction as earnest money and the balance, if any, at closing. Possession will be delivered to Buyer at closing. The earnest money shall be deposited in an interest bearing account at Seller's sole discretion. Any interest earned shall be payable to the School District at closing or in the event the Buyer defaults.

(2) Seller shall deliver to Buyer at closing a Quitclaim Deed in substantial conformance with the form of deed set forth in 765 ILCS 5/10.

(3) Closing shall occur within forty-five days of the date of Seller's acceptance of Buyer's bid at a time and place mutually agreed to by Buyer and Seller, or in the absence of such mutual agreement at a reasonable time and place set by Seller, subject to the conditions below (the “Closing”).

(4) Seller shall, at its sole cost and expense, deliver or cause to be delivered to Buyer, not less than five (5) days before closing, a current plat of survey and a commitment for an owner's title insurance policy issued by Chicago Title Insurance Company in the amount of the purchase price, showing title in the Seller subject only to the conditions and exceptions stated in the Chicago Title and Trust Company's commitment number 1412-00331800-NLN. The title commitment shall be conclusive evidence of good title as therein shown as to all matters insured by the policy, subject only to the exceptions as therein stated.

(5) If the title commitment discloses unpermitted exceptions that render the title unmarketable, Seller shall have twenty (20) days from the date of delivery thereof to have the exceptions removed from the commitment or to have the title insurer commit to insure against loss or damage that may be occasioned by such exceptions. If Seller fails to have the exceptions removed or in the alternative, to obtain the commitment for title insurance specified above as to such exceptions within the specified time, Buyer may terminate the sale or may elect, upon notice to Seller no later than the day of the expiration of the twenty day (20) period, to take title as it then is with the right to deduct from the purchase price liens or encumbrances of a definite or ascertainable amount. If Buyer does not so elect, the sale shall become null and void without further action of the parties or remedy to Buyer except for return of the earnest money and any interest earned thereon. If Buyer defaults, then at Seller's option the earnest money, and any interest earned thereon, shall be retained by the School District as liquidated damages, and the sale as to the Buyer shall thereupon become null and void. Seller also shall furnish Buyer an affidavit of title in customary form for title insurance purposes covering the date of closing and showing title in Seller subject only to the conditions and exceptions stated in the title commitment.

Seller shall pay the amount of any stamp tax imposed by law on the transfer of the title, including but not limited to, State and County transfer taxes, and shall furnish a completed Real Estate Transfer Declaration signed by the Seller or the Seller's agent in the form required pursuant to the Real Estate Transfer Tax Act of the State of Illinois, and shall furnish any declaration signed by the Seller or the Seller's agent or meet other requirements as established by any local ordinance with regard to a transfer or transaction tax. Any such tax required by local ordinance shall be paid by the Buyer.

Time shall be of the essence as to all matters provided for in these terms and conditions.

All notices or documents required to be provided pursuant to these terms and conditions shall be given or made by personal service upon the Buyer or Seller's Superintendent, or upon sending the same by registered or certified mail, postage prepaid, return receipt requested, to Buyer at the address to be provided at the time that the earnest money is paid to Seller, and to Seller addressed to the Superintendent, New Lenox School District Number 122, 102 S. Cedar Road, New Lenox, Illinois 60451, or to such other address of which the Buyer and Seller shall give notice in the manner provided herein.

Notice mailed in conformance with this paragraph shall be deemed given upon deposit in the mail.

These terms and conditions shall be binding upon Seller and Buyer and their respective heirs, executors, administrators, successors and assigns.

As used in this paragraph H., the terms “Seller” and “Indemnitees” include the School District, the Board of Education and its officers, members, employees and agents in their official and individual capacities. All information about the Real Estate included in these Terms and Conditions of Sale, the Notice of Sale, or otherwise provided by Seller is believed to be reliable, but is not guaranteed and no express or implied representations or warranties are made with regard to the Real Estate or matters relating thereto. The Real Estate will be sold and conveyed to Buyer on an “AS IS” basis without any representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, either oral or written, made by Seller with respect to the physical or environmental condition of the Real Estate or with respect to the existence or absence of toxic or hazardous materials, substances or wastes in, on, under or affecting the Real Estate, and subject to existing zoning, flood plain and any other restrictions on the use or development of the Real Estate. All warranties with respect to the Real Estate are hereby expressly disclaimed. Except as provided below regarding the scope of Buyer's indemnity commitment, any risk and all responsibility relating to any condition of the Real Estate, including, but not limited to any of the above-described conditions, are assumed by Buyer and disclaimed by Seller. Prospective buyers are urged to examine the Real Estate and conduct their own inspection and investigation of the Real Estate (including, without limitation, environmental inspections and investigations), the survey and the commitment for title insurance. The Buyer shall be responsible for and bear all expenses and liability associated with making certain that the Real Estate is suitable for the Buyer's intended use, and for complying with all applicable law. Further, upon Closing, as between Buyer and Seller, Buyer shall bear all responsibility, liability and obligation for the condition of the Real Estate and the Buyer's business or operations to be located on the Real Estate; Buyer waives, generally releases and covenants not to sue or make any claim whatsoever against Seller regarding the foregoing matters and all matters within the scope of the following indemnity commitment. Buyer shall, at its sole cost and expense, unconditionally indemnify, defend and hold Seller harmless, from and against any loss, liability, damage (whether direct or consequential), claims (whether or not ultimately successful), penalties, fines, injunctions, suits, proceedings, disbursements or expenses (including without limitation, attorneys' and experts' fees and disbursements and court costs) arising under any present or future local, state or federal law (and the amendments, regulations, orders or decrees promulgated thereunder) which may be incurred by or against Seller directly or indirectly resulting from the condition of the Real Estate. Buyer's obligations, indemnification and risk with respect to the condition of the Real Estate under this paragraph shall survive the Closing and delivery of the Quitclaim Deed.

No real estate commissions, or similar fees, will be paid by Seller in connection with the sale.

Seller reserves the right to waive irregularities, to continue the sale from time to time, to reject any or all bids, and to adjourn the sale.
