bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city is considering $40.5 million in sewer system improvements, including an 8-foot tunnel that would transport sewage and storm water under the Des Plaines River to the East Side Waste Water Treatment Plant.

The project is the second phase of several system improvements planned over the next decade, Jim Eggen, director of public utilities, told the City Council at its study session Monday night.

The improvements would alleviate overflow problems caused during rainy weather, Eggen said.

“We’re trying to get down under the riverbed so we have no impact on the river bot-

tom,” Eggen said.

Currently the city has a 36inch pipe under the river to carry sewage from the west side of the river to the treatment plant, which is on the eastern river bank near I-80.

The pipe has a capacity of 8 million gallons per day, Eggen said. During wet weather, up to 85 million gallons of combined sanitary sewer and storm water get pushed into the system. What the pipe can’t handle ends up being discharged into the river, an EPA violation.

The city at one time had 30 such combined system overflow problems, Eggen said. It was eliminated 26 of them so far, he said.

In addition to the tunnel under the river, the project will replace the influent pumping station at the East

Side plant, including a screening system that would prevent debris for damaging the pumps.

Finally, the project would improve the sanitary sewer system along Route 6, diverting it to the West Side treatment plant.

The good news is that all of the improvements for this phase of sewer improvements can be made without raising sewer rates, City Manager Jim Hock noted.

The city hopes to obtain funding through the State Revolving Fund program, which offers 20-year bond rates at 1.95 to 2.25 percent. The city’s cost would be about $2.47 million annually, Eggen said. The city plans to release bids later this year, with work to be completed by the last quarter of 2016.

$10.2M lottery ticket sold in Joliet

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One lucky person won $10.2 million in the lottery Saturday after buying a ticket from a liquor store on Route 59.

The person has not come forward to claim the money,

said Chanele Newton, Illinois Lottery spokeswoman. The winner has up to a year to claim the money.

The ticket was purchased at United Liquor Mart, which also is a winner. The retailer that sells the ticket gets 1 percent of the lottery winnings, which amounts to more than

$100,000 in this case.

“It’s a good feeling,” said Mayur Soni, manager of the store at 1532 Route 59. “It’s a good blessing from the gods.”

Soni said he did not know who bought the ticket. Newton said the Illinois Lottery would have more information when the winner comes forward.

Storms cause power outages, damage THE HERALD–NEWS Several thousand local residents were without power following a strong storm that blew through Will County about 7 p.m. Monday.

“Across the county there are currently about 11,000 ComEd customers without power,” Harold Damron, Emergency Management Association director for Will County, said about 8:30 p.m. Monday. “In Joliet and in the far east end of the county, around Steger, we had trees and wires down.”

Wind gusts of near 70 mph were reported near Lockport, according to WGN Channel 9 Meteorologist Tom Skilling.

The storm caused no significant damage locally, but a lot

of relatively small problems, Damron said.

“Some areas experienced localized flooding in intersections, but once the rain let up the flooding ended,” he said.

The storm was part of huge crescent of severe weather that passed through northern Illinois Monday night. A second wave was expected to hit later at night, and both Will and Grundy counties were under a severe thunderstorm watch until 3 a.m. Tuesday as well as a flash flood advisory until 4 a.m.

Northern Illinois University meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste said the region was fortunate the first round of weather that rolled through Monday evening didn’t cause more se-

vere damage, and predicted after Tuesday, residents can expect a little more rain and a sunny Fourth of July to round out the week.

“It looked like it could have been bad, but the storms over Iowa were so violent they blew themselves out” as they moved into Illinois, he said of the first round of Monday’s storms.

The National Weather Service predicts Tuesday will have a high near 82 degrees, with winds 10 to 15 mph. Wednesday’s high is expected to be 74, with Thursday’s high predicted for 75 degrees and 77 degrees for Independence Day.

The bad news is that funding for any future sewer work – including millions of dollars in improvements to the city’s various sewage and treatment plant systems – will have to be covered by sewer rate increases.

And all of the work is mandated by the EPA. “It’s not something that’s optional,” said Mike Waldron of Strand Associates, one of the consultants on the project, noting that the EPA expects to see progress on the improvements. “If it isn’t done, they could take it to court and tell us when it has to be done.”

Hock said the city plans to study ways to increase rates incrementally over the next few years so homeowners won’t be faced with one huge increase.

Major Joliet entryway marred by old Cub Foods site

While downtown development remains an ongoing focus, the road linking I-80 with Jefferson Street, the major commercial street of the city’s West Side, has large vacancies amid nondescript strip malls.

“It’s a main entrance to the city and visitors get off the interstate to see a [miniature] Statue of Liberty and donation boxes. It’s not real eye-catching. The area looks blighted,” Councilman Jim McFarland said.

McFarland is on the city’s Land Use Committee and has pointed to South Larkin Avenue as a section of the city in need of redevelopment.

Though Sam’s Club still operates near the corner of McDonough Street, Wal-Mart closed the adjacent 116,134 square-foot building six years ago. The former Cub Foods next door closed in 2006.

“Everything of worth has been stripped from that building by vandals and thieves.

It’s gutted inside,” McFarland said. The building was condemned last year, and a church has expressed interest in buying the shell that remains.

“We would’ve liked something that would generate sales tax,” Joliet Community & Economic Development Director James Haller said. “But they had everything in order, and it was a case of ‘a bird in the hand.’ ” But city officials said WalMart has been reluctant to waive its approval for a new occupant that could keep its buyer from having a liquor license approved in the future. Regulations prohibit licenses being issued for businesses within 100 feet of a church, Haller said.

son Street, which Haller said limits the market for a building that size.

About two years ago the city approved a U-Haul storage facility, but that deal didn’t go

through.

“They first said it was way bigger than they needed, but at the eleventh hour, they said they needed to build units closer to Larkin Avenue to adver-

tise for the climate-controlled units inside, which would’ve ruined the sight lines for the other businesses,” Haller said.

Meanwhile the 7-Eleven on the same corner is being sold

next month and will be “unbranded” if it continues to operate, according to a company spokeswoman.

Another change near the Larkin and McDonough intersection is last month’s re-branding of the city’s largest hotel from the Holiday Inn to Clarion. The 200-room hotel also houses a restaurant and banquet facility.

Several other hotels are at the Larkin Avenue interchange, making it a major travel stop for interstate motorists and visitors to the city.

Slightly north of the McDonough Street intersection, Pizza For U is renovating the former Bellagio Restaurant to replace its Jefferson Street location. Mike Togliatti of Trust Properties is marketing a building in the 100 block that has two office units. One side is currently leased by a vitamin business.

“I think it is still a [predominantly] retail area,” he said.

Togliatti said there has been some recent interest in the property, which could be remodeled into retail space, but the offers were below the owner’s minimum price.

Meanwhile, some tenants of the newer strip mall on the street have asked about cheaper leases, he said.

Realtor Jim Karges said a deal to purchase the veterinary office at 218 S. Larkin Ave. is expected to close next month. Karges would not identify which business will occupy the building, which has been closed for a few years, but said it will be completely remodeled.

“It’s going to be a retail business, but more service than selling products,” Karges said.

McFarland believes a TIF District could spur development on South Larkin Avenue.

“We’ve focused on development downtown, but it’s the overlooked corridor into the city. It’s not the best use of property there,” he said.

Road woes discussed at town hall meeting

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – State legislators told residents that they are starting a dialogue between local agencies about curbing truck traffic in Elwood, but residents said they want action.

“They’ve talked long enough,” resident Judy Kreiser said. “We’ve got to make the trucks go the way they were supposed to, not through here.”

Sen. Pat McGuire’s Elwood town hall meeting Monday evening, the fourth and last of his June tour around Will County, centered around the village’s drive to curb truck traffic on Route 53 and Walter Strawn Drive.

McGuire, D-Joliet, was joined by Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, as he told residents that a dialogue needs to be created between Elwood, Joliet, Will County and Illinois.

“To my surprise there has not been much communication among different and effective local units of government, and we want to fix that,” McGuire said.

But residents said the truck traffic would still continue on Route 53. Many pointed to CenterPoint Properties as the cause for trucks

not following original plans for truck traffic.

“When CenterPoint came in they made a promise they would take and utilize Baseline Road to Arsenal Road especially for trucks going west on I-55,” resident Alejandro Gutierrez said. “I don’t know about you, but if you make a promise don’t you think you should stick to it?”

Gutierrez said trucks veering off that path and onto Laraway Road and private roads are over the weight limit.

“The township doesn’t get any money [to fix the roads] and those roads are getting torn up,” Gutierrez said.

When the village government decided to enforce traffic restrictions, prohibiting left turns from Baseline Road

onto Walter Strawn Drive and right turns from Walter Strawn onto Baseline, CenterPoint sued the village and filed a restraining order.

This prevents the village from doing anything to the truck route until the federal suit is resolved.

However, Mayor William Offerman said the restraining order is temporary and he is optimistic about the village’s battle to curb traffic.

“We did not lose any of those lawsuits,” Offerman said.

Also Monday, the Illinois Commerce Commission set a date, Aug. 20, to hear evidence regarding truck traffic on Route 53 and Walter Strawn.

The commission discussed increasing the time between the warning lights and gate closures at the Union Pacific railway crossing on Walter Strawn an additional six to seven seconds.

The commission also discussed the possibility of adding police officers during funerals at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery to direct traffic flow on Hoff Road during times of heavy train and truck traffic.

New railroad crossing coming to Coal City

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A new railroad crossing through Broadway Road in Coal City could congest traffic in the area, if only for 10 minutes per day.

The track will cross Broadway Road and will connect the new inland logistics port located on the southwest corner of Reed and South Broadway roads to the adjacent Union Pacific railroad line.

One or two 60-car trains going about 10 mph are anticipated to use the track daily, ac-

cording to local attorney Frank Cortina, who made a presentation Friday to the Grundy County Highway Committee.

Cortina represents Providence Logistics and Clayco, which are developing the 285acre logistics park.

“We have committed that we will avoid when the school buses are going and will avoid heavy traffic times,” Cortina said. “They would be coming in mid-morning when traffic is the least – that’s the expectation.”

Each train is likely to tie up traffic at the crossing for about

10 minutes, Cortina said.

The crossing is within a “quiet zone,” which means the trains cannot use their horns and must comply with certain deceleration zoning, which was already planned and approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission, Cortina said.

The highway committee on Friday issued the permit needed to build the track. The decision was in line with the ICC, which already granted approvals to the developers.

“It could be as early as this week that they start construc-

tion,” Grundy County Engineer Craig Cassem said Monday.

The substantial increase in industrial traffic in the area will prompt further upgrades to Reed and Broadway roads near the logistics park, project engineer Jason Wiesbrock told the committee Friday.

“We will address issues such as dedicating right of way on Broadway and contributions for a turn signal at Reed Road and Broadway Road at a later time,” Cassem said Monday.

Several semitrailers will

travel in and out of the park every day to load freight and transport it to Chicago.

No companies have committed to build within the park yet.

But Cortina said developers are in final negotiations with one company and expect others to follow.

The first company is expected to bring a “minimum of 50 jobs,” Cortina said Friday.

“Obviously, in order to have the first user, we need to allow the UP trains to come in,” Cortina said. “I think this is an exciting project and a good thing for the county.”

Lockport works with Retail Coach Consultant has been busy analyzing local retail climate

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The city of Lockport wants new business and is looking for new ways to attract stores and restaurants to town.

Enter the Retail Coach, a Mississippi-based company that provides retail consulting and market research to local governments, chambers of commerce and economic development organizations.

City officials hired the consultant in early April to prepare plans for retail economic development.

It’s one of the many initiatives city officials have taken this year to increase Lockport’s profile in the Chicago region. Lockport is spending $40,000 – in three installments – for the many services the company plans to provide.

The Retail Coach staff analyzed the city’s retail trade area as consisting of three markets: downtown Lockport, the Ninth Street corridor that connects downtown

to the region and everything west of Farrell Road, said Pamela Hirth, the city’s community and economic development director.

“Now they’re going to look in the individual markets and determine where people are coming from, how many and what kind of spending power or household income they have,” she said.

Lockport’s retail trade area doesn’t just include the city itself but neighboring communities where people shop, such as Lemont, New Lenox, Homer Glen and Romeoville, she said.

The Retail Coach staff also completed a gap analysis to determine how people spend their money and where Lockport falls short in the retail trade areas.

“It’s helpful when certain retailers are looking at a community and they can see, ‘Oh, there is a real need for

this here,’ ” Hirth said about the gap analysis.

Lockport has some gaps, such as home improvement, electronic and apparel stores, she said. They also have gaps in fine sit-down restaurants.

Retail Coach is getting to know Lockport. Hirth provided the Retail Coach staff with a list of business owners and real estate brokers.

She said they’ve had several meetings with key stakeholders in the area.

The consultant plans to spend time in neighboring communities to asses what retail needs they fulfill compared to Lockport.

Hirth said in May the company’s staff went to the International Council of Shopping Centers conference in Las Vegas, where they met with several companies and provided them marketing materials on potential locations in Lockport.

LOCAL BRIEF Culver’s holds night for Toppen family FRANKFORT – The Culver’s in Frankfort will hold a “Night of Giving” on Wednesday for the family of Pfc. Aaron Toppen, the American soldier killed June 9 in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan.

Fifteen percent of sales between 4 and 8 p.m. will be donated to Toppen’s family, Culver’s said in a news release.

The restaurant is at 20592 S. La Grange Road.

Members of Toppen’s family will be at the restaurant, Culver’s said. American flags will cover the grounds outside.

Thousands of people lined the route of Toppen’s funeral procession last week as his body was taken to St. John’s Cemetery in Mokena.

Toppen, 19, was a Mokena resident. He graduated from Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort in 2013.

out of the way to avoid being struck, while Stapleton fired multiple shots at the Nissan.

Police said Pacheco was shot in the arm and grazed across his face. Pacheco’s family claimed three bullets went through his arm, one shattered his jaw and another lodged in his clavicle, according to reports. Despite his wounds, the chase continued until the Nissan crashed into a light pole at State and Division streets in Lockport.

Pacheco’s federal lawsuit, in which he claims the Joliet officers used excessive force, is on hold until the criminal charges are resolved. Alessio-Policandriotes has set a trial date in November.

Pacheco has also been charged with aggravated fleeing from police, driving under the influence, reckless driving, vandalism, aggravated stalking and several traffic violations. He served six months in jail before being released on $50,000 bond while awaiting trial.

Murder investigation continues

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com DWIGHT – The investigation into the shooting death of two women in their home last month remains active.

In a news release sent late Monday afternoon, Dwight police said investigators are continuing to follow up on leads and are currently waiting on test results to be returned from the state lab. More information is expected to be released later this week, according to the news release.

Dwight Village President Jared Anderson said Monday he believes some closure will

be forthcoming.

“There’s nothing to report yet, while state police are still testing things at the crime lab,” Anderson said.

At 4:38 a.m. June 14, a 911 call brought police to the house at 200 W. North St. where a male said he’d been shot. Authorities found Donna Denker, 60, and her daughter, Kelli, 30, dead in their home. Autopsies showed the women were shot to death.

A 23-year-old man also was shot, but survived.

“We want to reassure the citizens of Dwight this is an isolated incident. We would like to thank the residents of this fine

community for their kindness, prayers and patience,” Dwight police state in the release. “We made the citizens of Dwight a promise that we would work until this case was brought to a resolution. We are determined, and will fulfill the promise.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 815584-3132. The Dwight Village Board and Grundy County CrimeStoppers have offered a combined $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

JOLIET – A man held up a pharmacy just as the store opened Monday morning.

At 7:50 a.m. the man came into Walgreens, 358 E. Cass St. and approached the counter, took out a handgun and threatened the cashier, according to Joliet Lt. Ed Gregory.

After taking money from the register, the robber fled

on foot to the northwest. No one was injured.

The suspect was described as a black man in his late teens with a thin build, about 5-feet 11 inches tall.

The robber was wearing a light-colored hooded-sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes.

Five teens arrested with drugs and gun

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Five teenagers were reportedly caught Sunday with marijuana and a loaded gun in their car.

At 1:29 a.m. a police officer stopped a green 2001 Ford Focus for a moving violation at Boughton Road and Whitewater Drive, according to Lt. Mike Rompa.

The officer “detected a distinct odor of cannabis emitting from the vehicle” and questioned the occupants,

Rompa said. Marijuana and a loaded .25-caliber handgun were found inside, he said.

Kennedy M. Paterson, 18, of the 200 block of Mississippi Avenue in Joliet, was arrested on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of ammunition, marijuana possession and improper lane usage.

He was booked into the Will County jail.

The other four occupants were released with requirements to appear in juvenile court, Rompa said.

JOLIET – A judge decided Monday that Joliet police were justified in making a traffic stop that turned into a deadly force situation in July 2012.

Judge Carla Alessio-Policandriotes denied a motion to keep the initial contact James A. Pacheco had with police officers from being used in his trial later this year.

Pacheco, 37, of Lockport, is charged with aggravated assault for allegedly trying to run down officers Adam Stapleton and Eric Zettergren, who both testified Monday.

Pacheco has filed a federal lawsuit contending that Joliet police used excessive force in the arrest.

Defense attorney Jeff Tomczak argued the officers had no corroboration of the vandalism complaint they’d been sent to investigate when they stopped Pacheco.

About 2:30 a.m. on July 30, 2012, Pacheco was allegedly

seen breaking windows of his former landlord’s house in the 300 block of Union Street and driving away in a black Nissan. Stapleton and Zettergren both testified the Nissan was the only other vehicle on the road when they spotted it at Washington and Union streets a short time later and had it pulled over.

“Dispatchers told them the crime [they were responding to] had ceased, but the description of the black Nissan was given. It would’ve been inappropriate for Officer Stapleton to let that Nissan continue, but to go on and verify windows had been broken,” Alessio-Policandriotes said.

Tomczak addressed only the initial stop in court Monday, but Pacheco allegedly sped away when the officers got out of their squad car until he was stopped by a crossing train in the 900 block of Washington Street. “There is something here for everybody,” said Burdette Carter, Grundy County Fair board member.

The fair will host vendors serving lemonade to barbecue, and everything in between.

There will be live music, magic shows and wrestling matches, all free to the public.

“One of the best things about the fair is there is no admission, free parking, free fireworks and even a petting zoo that’s free for kids,” Carter said Monday as vendors were pulling in to set up for the fair that starts Wednesday and goes through Sunday.

New this year, is the Banana Derby and the Pocket Circus – “the world’s smallest circus.”

“The Banana Derby is going to be very entertaining.

You’ve got monkey jockeys riding rescue dogs,” Carter said. “These aren’t just any dogs, They’re well trained and ready to entertain.”

Plainfield park board holds interviews for executive director

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Township Park District Board of Commissioners have scheduled for Wednesday a closed session to interview prospective candidates for the executive director position.

The Wednesday meeting will open to the public at 6 p.m. at the Recreation and Administration Center, 23729 W. Ottawa Street, but immediately go into closed session for interviews.

The board has narrowed

the field to seven candidates, President Mary Kay Ludemann said.

“We’re doing first-round interviews,” Ludemann said.

“We’ll hold a couple of sessions to get through the interviews.

Then we will narrow it down for second-round interviews.”

The board is expected to hire a permanent executive director by the end of July.

The executive director position has been unstable since former Executive Director Gregory Bott was released by a new board majority in May of 2013.

The board majority, consisting of Commissioners Peter Hurtado, Janet Silosky and Peter Steinys, was criticized publicly for offering the position to Plainfield village Trustee Garrett Peck, who had no previous park experience.

Peck resigned Jan. 23 saying he had become “a lightning rod in the community.”

Superintendent of Parks Gene Coldwater was appointed interim executive director.

The board then hired former Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Richard Grodsky for the interim role.

STEVEN P. HUCEK Steven P. Hucek, age 50, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 27, 2014.

Steven is survived by his father, Wendell; three brothers, Kurt (Patty), Jeffrey (Karen), and Douglas (Beth) Hucek; eight nieces and nephews, Annie Allgood, Kurt (Jennifer) Hucek, Marc (Marissa) Hucek, Kristin (Michael) Tomasino, Justin and Brianne Hucek, Adam and Nolan Hucek; three great nieces and great nephews, Logan and Giana Allgood and Natalie Hucek; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends; best friends, Tony Sinchak, Danny Mikuska and his Westminster Street friends.

Mary Jane Muir, age 79, of Joliet, went home to the Lord, on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born November 1, 1934, in Joliet, she attended St. Patrick Grade School and Providence High School. She gave ten years of her life to God as a Dominican Sister of Adrian, Michigan. She taught at Parks School for 25 years, and loved reading and traveling, especially to Ft. Myers Beach in Florida. She will be greatly missed by all.

Surviving are her beloved companion, Dorothy Schreiner; two sisters, Ruth (late Jack) Hayes and Lois (Ronald) Schaller; one brother, George (Adeline) Muir; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Elizabeth (nee Helmers) Muir; one sister, Helen (Cecil) Whalen; and brothers, Maurice Muir, Kenneth (Starr) Muir, Edward (Rosemary) Muir, Robert (Trudie) Muir, and Eugene (Margaret) Muir.

She belonged to the Senior Parishioners, Altar and Rosary Society, KSKJ St. Francis De Sales Lodge #29, and Slovenian Union of America Branch #20. Prior to her residence at Our Lady of Angels she was a resident at the Timbers of Shorewood Retirement Community.

Former 11 Mets GM Cashen dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Frank Cashen, the general manager who wore a signature bow tie and fashioned a New York Mets team that rollicked its way to the 1986 World Series championship, died Monday. The team said he was 88.

He died at Memorial Hospital in Easton, Maryland, after a short illness, the Mets said.

Cashen was a longtime sports writer in his Baltimore hometown and went to law school before joining the Orioles and eventually becoming their GM. The Orioles won two titles while Cashen worked for them, but it was in New York where he put his stamp on a franchise with the likes of Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden.

Hired in 1980, Cashen transformed a last-place team into an outfit that became the most dominant force in baseball. Those Mets were brash and full of swagger, not at all like the personality of the man who built the club.

Cashen made the trades that brought star first baseman Keith Hernandez and future Hall of Famer Gary Carter to the Mets, and oversaw the draft picks of Gooden and Strawberry.

“Frank was our leader,” Strawberry said in a statement. “I always admired the way he put together our team. He mixed young guys, like me and Doc, with guys like Carter and Hernandez.

He was able to find the perfect blend to build a championship.”

Quinn makes minor cuts to $35.7B budget

By SARA BURNETT and SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn on Monday largely approved a 2015 state budget he has criticized as “incomplete” for not extending a temporary income tax increase, setting off another back-and-forth with his Republican rival over how best to fix Illinois’ huge financial problems.

The Chicago Democrat cut $250 million for renovations to the state Capitol from the $35.7 billion spending plan, saying Illinois can’t afford to move forward with improvements this year. He also said he has directed state agencies to make additional cuts, including selling half the state’s 21 airplanes.

“While legislators didn’t do their job on the budget, I will

continue to do mine,” Quinn said in a statement.

Quinn wanted legislators to send him a budget that included an extension of Illinois’ temporary income tax increase, which is set to roll back in January. But legislators trying to keep their seats this fall rejected that idea, instead approving a spending plan that doesn’t fully cover spending in the fiscal year that begins Tuesday.

Quinn’s signature means that if legislators don’t return to Springfield post-election and approve new revenue – such as extending the tax increase – the state will face a roughly $4.4 billion budget hole. That could force layoffs, facility closures and massive program cuts that Quinn said he wanted to avoid.

Republican candidate for governor Bruce Rauner, who

opposes extending the tax increase, said Quinn’s leadership Illinois has meant higher taxes and big cuts to school funding and that “structural reforms” are needed to fix the problems.

“Pat Quinn broke his promise on taxes, and his only goal is to permanently take more money out of every hard-working Illinoisans’ paycheck – and this broken budget is the result,” the businessman from Winnetka said in a statement.

Quinn’s campaign, meanwhile, has attacked Rauner for not putting forward a budget plan of his own and not outlining how he would cut spending if the tax increases isn’t made permanent.

The 67 percent income tax increase, approved by Democrats in 2011, cost the typical Illinois taxpayer $1,100 last year.

It’s set to drop from 5 percent to 3.75 percent on Jan. 1, reducing

state revenues by about $1.8 billion. The loss of revenue would more than double in the following fiscal year, when the lower tax rate would be in effect for a full 12 months.

The budget Quinn signed Monday keeps funding for schools flat but doesn’t allocate enough money to cover increased expenses, such as health care costs and wage increases. Republicans have called it “gimmicky” because it uses special funds for dayto-day operations and banks on future increases in revenue that may not materialize.

Democratic Senate President John Cullerton has said it’s likely legislators will return after the election and approve either the tax increase extension or other revenue.

On Monday, Cullerton spokeswoman Rikeesha Phelon said the budget “secures funding for

key priorities, but there will be more tough choices for fiscal progress in the future.”

Lawmakers may override Quinn’s veto of the money for Capitol renovations with a three-fifths majority vote in both chambers. The project drew criticism last year for being unnecessarily extravagant at a time when the state has a multibillion-dollar backlog of unpaid bills. Among the items that prompted Quinn to say he would freeze funding were three sets of copper-plated doors and two chandeliers that cost $80,000 each.

On Monday, Quinn also touted other cuts he has recently ordered, including eliminating 80 paid parking spaces for state employees who work downtown – an annual savings of about $100,000 and reducing lease costs for state buildings by about $55 million.

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn has replaced the head of the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Quinn’s office announced Monday that Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Erica Borggren has been appointed to the post held by Ann Schneider since 2011.

Quinn called Borggren a “proven leader,” but made no mention of why Schneider was departing from the agency that’s facing numerous problems. His office later confirmed her resignation is effective next week.

The state Senate must confirm the appointment.

Quinn’s hiring activities have come under scrutiny this year.

CHICAGO – Chicago aviation officials are warning that the transit system at O’Hare International Airport that moves travelers around the facility won’t be operating at night through Friday morning.

The Chicago Department of Aviation said the Airport Transit System train won’t operate from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. because of construction. Aviation officials have said shuttle buses will be available between O’Hare airport parking lots and terminals.

They’re asking passengers to allow extra time for travel between terminals and parking lots.

More overnight closures are expected after the Fourth of July travel period on July 9.

STATE BRIEFS Alvarez: 10 plead guilty to Arrests made in Cook human trafficking County Jail trafficking ring CHICAGO – Cook County prosecutors have said 10 people have pleaded guilty to trafficking young women and girls for sex.

State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said Monday that nine men and one woman will serve sentences ranging from six to 20 years.

She said the charges stem from a 2011 wiretap investigation that targeted current and former gang members who trafficked women and children as young as 13 on the streets or through the Internet. All have pleaded guilty over the past year.

Alvarez said the defendants worked together to manage the five young women and 11 children using physical and emotional abuse that included beating, branding them with tattoos, locking them in car trunks and threatening to kill them or their families.

Alvarez said local law enforcement used court-ordered wiretaps and electronic surveillance.

CHICAGO – A correctional officer was among those arrested over the weekend for smuggling contraband into Cook County Jail.

Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart made the announcement Monday.

Dart’s office said Jermaine Hoskins was arrested after police found marijuana and tobacco in his car, alongside toothpaste tubes. Investigators say he had been bringing contraband items into the jail for more than a year. He was charged with bringing contraband into a penal institution and official misconduct, both felonies.

Dart’s office said investigators learned that toothpaste caps were used to measure marijuana that was distributed detainees. Also arrested were a jail detainee, Lawrence Post, and his acquaintance, Taveda Driver.

Both were charged with bribing an officer, also a felony.

Chicago congresswoman issues gun violence report CHICAGO – U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly of Chicago is recommending tougher federal laws to combat gun violence.

On Monday, the Democrat released her 2014 Kelly Report on Gun Violence in America. It included recommendations to invest in smart gun technologies to prevent stolen guns from being used to commit crimes.

Kelly’s report also recommended expanding the list of those who are prohibited from owning guns to include people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence charges or those subject to temporary restraining orders. She also wanted to expand law enforcement’s ability to crack down on gun trafficking.

Union officials take stock after court decision

CHICAGO – Union officials representing Illinois’ home health care workers says they’re concerned about some union members leaving after a U.S. Supreme Court decision, but don’t expect widespread membership loss.

Keith Kelleher is president of Service Employees International Union’s Healthcare Illinois. He says about 70 percent of the roughly 26,000 home health care workers are dues-paying members. The others aren’t members who’ve had to pay “fair share fees.”

However, the High Court ruled Monday that public sector unions can’t collect fees from home health care workers who object to being affiliated with a union.

Kelleher didn’t immediately know how much the union will lose, but estimates it could be in the millions.

He says they’ll reach out to home health care workers in the private sector to help make up revenue.

Archway to be restored where Lincoln buried

SPRINGFIELD – Efforts are underway to begin restoration work on the original arched entrance to the Springfield cemetery where Abraham Lincoln is buried.

Restoration will start this summer and should be finished by November, about six months before a re-enactment of Lincoln’s funeral is planned for next May. Lincoln’s funeral procession ended at Oak Ridge Cemetery about 150 years ago.

Illinois to mark anniversary of Civil Rights Act

CHICAGO – A ceremony is planned in Chicago to mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The Illinois Department of Human Rights said it will commemorate the event on Wednesday at the Thompson Center in downtown Chicago. Among the speakers will be Thomas Armstrong of Naperville. Armstrong as a Freedom Rider who took buses with other activists in the southern United States in 1961.

The department also plan to unveil a Freedom Riders national traveling exhibit at the ceremony.

It will be on display until July 11.

State officials have said Gov. Pat Quinn plans a proclamation.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Student loan interest rates to increase WASHINGTON – Interest rates go up Tuesday for students taking out new federal loans. This hike is relatively minimal but could foreshadow more increases to come.

The change stems from a high-profile, bipartisan deal brokered last year by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama that ties the rates to the financial markets.

Interest rates go from 3.86 to 4.66 percent on undergraduate Stafford loans. Graduate student loans go from 5.41 percent to 6.21 percent. Interest rates on Plus loans for parents go from 6.41 percent to 7.21 percent.

For every $10,000 borrowed, the average borrower under the hike will pay back about $4 more every month when they begin paying back the money.

If the economy continues to improve, however, these kinds of rate hikes could continue. Congress stipulated that the rates for new loans be reset annually, but that borrowers keep the rate they were given for the life of the loan.

The compromise in Congress was reached after rates doubled last July.

Guideline: Most women can skip pelvic exam WASHINGTON – No more dreaded pelvic exam? New guidelines say most healthy women can skip the yearly ritual.

Routine pelvic exams don’t benefit women who have no symptoms of disease and who

aren’t pregnant, and they can cause harm, the American College of Physicians said Monday as it recommended that doctors quit using them as a screening tool.

It’s part of a growing movement to evaluate whether many longtime medical practices are done more out of habit than necessity, and the guideline is sure to be controversial.

Scientific evidence “just doesn’t support the benefit of having a pelvic exam every year,” said guideline coauthor Dr. Linda Humphrey of the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Oregon Health & Science University.

“There will be women who are relieved, and there are women who really want to go in and talk with their doctor about it and will choose to continue this,” she added.

Obama lauds former CEO as right choice to fix VA

By JOSH LEDERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama sought to turn the page Monday on a humiliating chapter in the history of the Veterans Affairs Department, tapping former Procter & Gamble CEO Robert McDonald to take over the sprawling agency.

A former Army captain, McDonald would bring a blend of corporate and military experience to a bureaucracy reeling from revelations of chronic, system-wide failure and veterans dying while on long waiting lists for treatment. His selection reflects Obama’s desire to put a tested manager in charge as the White House calls for a top-tobottom overhaul of the VA. “What especially makes Bob the right choice to lead the VA right now is his three decades of experience building and managing one of the world’s most recognizable

companies,” Obama said at VA headquarters. “In short, he’s about delivering better results.”

McDonald, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, was not likely chosen because of any past support for the president. He donated to Republican Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign to unseat Obama and has funded numerous other Republicans, including House Speaker John Boehner.

Joined by his wife and adult children, the 61-year-old said he planned to put veterans at the center of everything the VA does – a bureaucratic twist on the old adage that the customer is always right.

“At the VA, the veteran is our customer and we must all focus all day, every day on getting them the benefits and the care that they have so earned,” McDonald said.

“That’s the only reason we are here.”

firm McDonald quickly, Obama reiterated his call for Congress to grant the VA secretary more authority to fire senior leaders if necessary.

He said some of those responsible for falsifying patient records have been fired and more may be punished, adding that the scandal has “outraged us all.”

The VA operates the nation’s largest integrated health care system, with more than 300,000 fulltime employees and nearly 9 million veterans enrolled. But the agency faces intense scrutiny amid reports of nationwide treatment delays that were whitewashed by VA employees.

Last week, the White House released a scathing report Obama commissioned that charged the VA with “significant and chronic system failures” in the nation’s health system.

By MARK SHERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – A sharply divided Supreme Court ruled Monday that some companies with religious objections can avoid the contraceptives requirement in President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, the first time the high court has declared that businesses can hold religious views under federal law.

The justices’ 5-4 decision, splitting conservatives and liberals, means the Obama administration must search for a different way of providing free contraception to women who are covered under the health insurance plans of objecting companies.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote in his majority opinion, over a dissent from the four liberal justices, that forcing companies to pay for methods of women’s contraception to which they object violates the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act. He said the ruling is limited and there are ways for the administration to ensure women get the birth control they want.

But White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the decision creates health risks for women, and he said Congress should take action to make sure they get coverage.

“President Obama believes that women should make personal health care decisions for themselves rather than their bosses deciding for them,” Earnest said. “Today’s decision jeopardizes the health of the women who are employed by these companies.”

Contraception is among a range of preventive services that must be provided at no extra charge under the health care law that Obama signed in 2010.

Two years ago, Chief Justice John Roberts cast the pivotal Supreme Court vote that saved the law in the midst of Obama’s campaign for re-election. On Monday, Roberts sided with the four justices who would have struck down the law in its entirety, holding in favor of the religious rights of closely held corporations, like the Oklahoma-based Hobby Lobby chain of arts-and-craft stores that challenged the contraceptives provision.

Hobby Lobby is among roughly 50 businesses that have sued over covering contraceptives. Some, like the two involved in the Supreme Court case, are willing to cover most methods of contraception, as long as they can exclude drugs or devices that the government says may work after an egg has been fertilized.

But Monday’s ruling would apply more broadly to other companies that do not want to pay for any of the 20 birth control methods and devices that have been approved by federal regulators.

Alito said the decision is limited to contraceptives.

“Our decision should not be understood to hold that an insurance-coverage mandate must necessarily fall if it conflicts with an employer’s religious beliefs,” he said.

He suggested two ways the administration could deal with the birth control issue.

The government could simply pay for pregnancy prevention, he said. Or it could provide the same kind of accommodation it has made available to religious-oriented, nonprofit corporations.

Court: Religious rights trump birth control rule

DETROIT – General Motors’ safety crisis worsened on Monday when the automaker added 8.2 million vehicles to its ballooning list of cars recalled over faulty ignition switches.

The latest recalls involve mainly older midsize cars and bring GM’s total this year to 29 million, surpassing the 22 million recalled by all automakers last year. The added recalls also raise questions about the safety of ignition switches in cars made by all manufacturers.

GM said the recalls are for “unintended ignition key rotation” and cover seven vehicles, including the Chevrolet Malibu from 1997 to 2005, the Pontiac Grand Prix from 2004 to 2008, and the 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS. The company is aware of three deaths, eight injuries and seven crashes involving the vehicles, although it has no conclusive evidence that faulty switches caused the accidents. CEO Mary Barra said the recalls stem from an extensive safety review within the company.

The announcement of more recalls extends a crisis for GM that began in February with small-car ignition switch problems. GM recalled 2.6 million older small cars worldwide because the switches can unexpectedly slip from “run” to “accessory,” shutting off the engines.

That disables power steering and power brakes and can cause people to lose control

of their cars. It also stops the air bags from inflating in a crash. GM has been forced to admit that it knew of the problem more than 10 years, yet it failed to recall the cars until this year.

GM’s conduct in the smallcar recall already is under investigation by the Justice Department and both houses of Congress. Earlier this year, the company paid a $35 million fine to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for delays in reporting the small-car ignition switch problems.

On June 18, NHTSA opened two investigations of Chrysler minivans and SUVs as part of a widening inquiry into air bag and ignition switch problems across the U.S. auto industry.

NHTSA began asking automakers and parts suppliers for information on the interrelated issues after GM’s small-car recall. NHTSA asked automakers and parts makers for information on switches and how long air bags will inflate after the keys are moved out of the “run” position to “accessory” or “off.”

In many cases, the answer is less than a second.

That led to the Chrysler inquiries, NHTSA said in a statement. “The agency examined all major manufacturers’ air bag deployment strategies as they relate to switch position,” the agency said in a statement. “NHTSA will continue to refine its knowledge of these systems.”

GM’s recalls on Monday bring this year’s total so far to more than 40 million for the U.S. industry.

Bodies of missing Israeli teens found

By JOSEF FEDERMAN and IAN DEITCH The Associated Press JERUSALEM – The Israeli military found the bodies of three missing teenagers on Monday, just over two weeks after they were abducted in the West Bank, allegedly by Hamas militants – a grisly discovery that culminated a feverish search that led to Israel’s largest ground operation in the Palestinian territory in nearly a decade and raised fears of renewed fighting with Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed tough action as he convened an emergency meeting of his Security Cabinet.

“Hamas is responsible, and Hamas will pay,” the Israeli leader said in a statement, adding the teenagers “were kidnapped and murdered in cold blood by human animals.” In Washington, President Barack Obama urged restraint.

Fraenkel, a 16-year-old with dual Israeli-American citizenship, disappeared June 12 while hitchhiking home from the Jewish seminaries where they were studying near the West Bank city of Hebron.

Despite the dangers, hitchhiking is common among Israelis traveling in and out of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a military spokesman, said the bodies were found “under a pile of rocks” near the village of Halhul, just north of Hebron.

Binyamin Proper, who was among the civilian volunteers who found the bodies, told Channel 2 TV that a member of the search party “saw something suspicious on the ground, plants that looked out of place, moved them and moved some rocks and then found the bodies. We realized it was them and we called the army.”

Shortly after the abductions, Israel accused Hamas of being responsible and launched a frantic manhunt throughout the West Bank, ar-

resting nearly 400 Hamas militants. Last week, Israel identified two well-known Hamas operatives as the chief suspects. The two men remained on the run late Monday.

The search for the teens captured the nation’s attention.

The Israeli media delivered round-the-clock updates, and the mothers of the three teens became high-profile figures as they campaigned for their sons’ return. At one point, the women addressed the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva to draw attention to their plight.

Israelis held daily prayer vigils, including mass gatherings attended by tens of thousands of people at the Western Wall, the holiest prayer site in Judaism, and in a downtown square in Tel Aviv.

News of their deaths prompted an outpouring of grief among Israelis. Friends and neighbors rushed to the homes of the families in the Israeli towns of Nof Ayalon and Elad, and the West Bank settlement of Talmon, while

Militants’ state declaration could undermine alliances

By RYAN LUCAS and SAMEER N. YACOUB The Associated Press BAGHDAD – A militant extremist group’s unilateral declaration of an Islamic state is threatening to undermine its already-tenuous alliance with other Sunnis who helped it overrun much of northern and western Iraq.

One uneasy ally has vowed to resist if the militants try to impose their strict interpretation of Shariah law.

Fighters from the al-Qaida breakaway group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have spearheaded the offensive in recent weeks that has plunged Iraq into its deepest crisis since the last U.S. troops left in 2011. The group’s lightning advance has brought under its control territory stretching from northern Syria as far as the outskirts of

Baghdad in central Iraq.

In a bold move Sunday, the group announced the establishment of its own state, or caliphate, governed by Islamic law. It proclaimed its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a highly ambitious Iraqi militant with a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head, to be the caliph, and it demanded that Muslims around the world pledge allegiance to him.

Through brute force and meticulous planning, the Sunni extremist group – which said it was changing its name to simply the Islamic State, dropping the reference to Iraq and the Levant – has managed to effectively erase the Syria-Iraq border and lay the foundations of its proto-state.

Along the way, it has battled Syrian rebels, Kurdish militias and the Syrian and Iraqi militaries.

Now, the group’s declara-

tion risks straining its loose alliances with other Sunnis who share the militants’ hopes of bringing down Iraq’s Shiite-led government but not necessarily its ambitions of carving out a transnational caliphate. Iraq’s minority Sunnis complain they have been treated as second-class citizens and unfairly targeted by security forces.

Topping the list of uneasy allies is the Army of the Men of the Naqshabandi Order, a Sunni militant organization with ties to Saddam Hussein’s now-outlawed Baath Party.

The group depicts itself as a nationalist force that defends Iraq’s Sunnis from Shiite rule.

A senior Naqshabandi commander in Diyala province northeast of Baghdad told The Associated Press that his group has “no intention” of joining the Islamic State or working under it.

Thousands of Israelis have died in wars and militant attacks over the years, and Israel has grappled with the kidnappings of soldiers by militant groups in the past. But the ages of the victims, and the fact that they were not armed, seemed to strike a raw nerve. With Israeli soldiers ordered not to hitchhike, security officials have long feared that civilians in the West Bank could make easy targets for kidnappers.

in Israeli prisons. Tensions also had been high since the shooting deaths in May of two Palestinian teens during a stone-throwing clash with Israeli security forces.

Netanyahu was huddling with his Security Cabinet, a group of senior government ministers, late Monday debating a response. But Israel’s options could be limited.

After a two-week crackdown on Hamas in the West Bank, few major targets remain in the West Bank. Hamas had already been weakened by seven years of pressure by Israel and the forces of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Israeli troops seemed to find very little during the latest crackdown.

Israel could turn its attention toward the Gaza Strip, where Hamas is the main power. Israel has already been battling a wave of rocket fire from Gaza that erupted in response to its West Bank operation, and it could step up the intensity of its reprisals.

Ukrainian cease-fire expires, no extension yet

By DAVID McHUGH and BALINT SZLANKO The Associated Press KIEV, Ukraine – The fragile, 10-day cease-fire in eastern Ukraine expired Monday night with no immediate word from the country’s president on whether he would extend it, and no sign that the pro-Moscow separatists had met his demands to ease the violence.

As the truce entered its final hours, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko discussed the situation in a phone call with the leaders of Russia, Germany and France, saying the rebels had not “fulfilled the conditions.”

Among other things, he demanded that the rebels hand back border posts and allow international observers to monitor the cease-fire.

The phone call included Russian President Vladimir Putin, Germany’s Chancellor

Angela Merkel and France’s Francois Hollande.

Poroshenko had already extended the cease-fire from seven days as part of a plan to end the fighting that has killed more than 400 people since April. The truce has been violated repeatedly, with the two sides blaming each other.

European leaders and the U.S. have urged Russia to use its influence with the rebels to ease the bloodshed and have threatened to impose another round of economic sanctions against Moscow.

While Putin has expressed support for the cease-fire, the West has accused Russia of allowing weapons and fighters to flow across the border into Ukraine.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the U.S. welcomes Putin’s encouraging words but that the Russian leader must take “tangible actions” if he hopes to avoid further sanctions.

Don’t reduce personalized Social Security services Did you hear about the federal government’s crazy idea? OK, the latest crazy idea?

Usually we don’t get too up in arms over what we consider crazy notions, mainly because (a) Federal government, with Congress at the lead, doesn’t act very fast these days on much of anything, and (b) Changes can take months if not years to implement, and by then someone may have recognized the folly of their ways.

We certainly hope the latest idea regarding Social Security offices is one of those that dies an ignoble death, and we praise U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley and Sen. Chuck Grassley for grabbing shovels to hopefully dig its final resting place. Here’s what has happened: The Social Security Administration announced that beginning in August it will no longer issue Social Security number printouts in its field offices. ... Beginning in October, those field offices will stop providing benefit verification letters except in emergency situations.

Anyone requesting such vital information would be able to do so only on the Internet or by telephone. We are talking no small matter here as last year 11 million Americans visited offices to seek out such information.

Hold on a minute – or rather a year, says Braley, who has introduced legislation to delay what he calls the harsh changes at the 19 offices, changes he believes could eventually lead to their closing.

Braley asked whether the changes would increase convenience and accessibility to services and whether they would save taxpayer money. The answer to both questions: No. A resounding no, in fact.

“There is every indication these service cuts would have an especially harsh impact on Iowa seniors who are likely to lack Internet access and face long holding times when seeking information over the phone,” he said.

possible, that might make a difference. But that’s not the case. Thus, Braley’s proposed legislation.

For his part, Grassley called it “inconceivable that government doesn’t want to be of the greatest service to anybody, particularly old people” who might not have Internet access or want to come face to face with a real live body who can answer questions directly without scanning page after page of government gobbledygook on a screen.

And Braley looks even further into the future, saying unwarranted and expensive service cuts – his words, not ours – move the government closer to closing the field offices and “leaving Iowa seniors with nowhere to go.”

In time, he said, seniors may improve their skills and Internet access may improve. But until that happens, we are firmly behind Braley when he says there is a “responsibility to address the need,” and that means keeping the status quo. Again, too many senior Iowans do not have and in many cases do not want Internet access, and thus this plan is not a good one for Iowa and we assume many other states. They want that personal contact with an expert who they can refer to whenever they have a question, someone from their town who might even know them personally.

So at the least we hope Braley’s bill becomes law. Ideally, from our point of view, a year’s delay isn’t enough; we wouldn’t mind seeing the changes delayed two or more years. Maybe by then someone will realize what a crazy idea this all is and decide it’s best to give seniors what many of them want and need: Personal service at a crucial time of their lives, the time they’ve worked so long for, the time to start receiving Social Security benefits.

We hope other Iowa congressmen join Braley and Grassley in efforts to continue to make that possible.

Rauner cannot risk being ‘Trumped’ It occurred to me when I was in Chicago the other day that the media furor about billionaire mogul Donald Trump’s insistence that he be allowed to hang 20-foot-high letters spelling out his name on his new skyscraper is pretty much the same sort of mindset behind Gov. Pat Quinn’s campaign to tag “Billionaire Bruce Rauner” as a rich, out-of-touch, right-wing white guy.

So, I commissioned a poll. While a majority actually agree that Trump had the right to hang his letters, he’s not popular here, and voters don’t think that people like him can understand regular folks.

The June 25 Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll of 1,033 likely Illinois voters found that just 38 percent have a favorable view of Trump while 42 percent

VIEWS Rich Miller have an unfavorable opinion of him. His numbers were worse in Chicago and suburban Cook County, where voters are far more Democratic and where the recent “giant letters” controversy was centered.

Just 23 percent of Chicagoans and 25 percent of suburban Cook residents had a favorable view of Trump, versus the 52 percent of Chicagoans and 56 percent of suburban Cook residents who had an unfavorable view. His favorable vs. unfavorable ratings among African-Americans were 27-46 and 38-43 among whites. His highest favorable ratings were among Republicans 53-23,

downstaters 47-34, collar county residents 44-38 and independents 43-37. The poll had a margin of error of ±3.05 percent.

But a large majority agreed with Trump when asked: “This month, Chicago’s mayor and many others criticized Mr. Trump for placing what they called ‘garish’ 20-foottall letters spelling out his name on his new downtown Chicago skyscraper.

Trump said it was his right to do so.”

The poll found that 61 percent of Illinoisans sided with Trump, while just 29 percent sided with Trump’s critics. Democrats were split 44-45 on the issue, African-Americans sided with Trump 47-41, as did 57 percent of Chicagoans, 56 percent of suburban Cook residents,

“Despite the relatively low opinion many have of Mr. Trump, most believe he has the right to put his name in ego-sized proportion on his own building,” explained We Ask America pollster Gregg Durham. “They’re able to separate their personal feelings about the man from the larger question concerning his rights.”

But I also wanted to test not just Trump, but people like Trump – as in Rauner.

So, we came up with this question: “Do you think that wealthy people like Mr. Trump are able to understand the problems of everyday folks?”

To perhaps no one’s surprise, just 32 percent of Illinoisans said that type of people can understand regular folks, while 55 percent said they couldn’t.

The differences were most pronounced among Democrats, at 18 percent “can understand” versus 72 percent “cannot understand,” Chicagoans at 21-63 and African-Americans at 26-58.

A mere 47-39 plurality of Republicans and a 45-44 split of suburban collar county residents agreed that people like Trump can understand regular folks, which probably shows you more than anything else just how ingrained this mindset is.

If you noticed above, a plurality of independents had a favorable viewpoint of Trump and a strong majority supported his right to hang those huge letters. But just 35 percent of independents said that Trump and those like him can understand their problems, while 51 percent said they can’t.

Downstaters leaned toward liking Trump and strongly supported his right to hang his letters, but a mere 27 percent said wealthy people like Trump can understand the problems of everyday folks, while 59

percent said they can’t.

And the same goes for whites, who didn’t care for Trump but backed his sign decision. Just 32 percent said Trump and folks like him can understand their problems, while 57 percent of whites said they cannot.

Taken in this context, it’s easy to understand Rauner’s endlessly repeated emphasis on his $18 watch and his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

It also helps explain Rauner’s announcement last week that he was supporting some long-time liberal populist proposals to close several “corporate loopholes” and to slap an inheritance tax on the transfer of yachts and jets to surviving spouses.

Rauner cannot risk being “Trumped” by Quinn. On the other hand, Quinn apparently believes he needs to paint Rauner as a local version of the cartoon character that Trump has become. It obviously works well here.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR APPLAUSE FOR MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS To the Editor: At our Romeoville Golden Ager Club a few weeks ago, I was inspired and impressed with a talk given by Kay, from Carillon.

She discussed the need for volunteers for Meals on Wheels.

I was very impressed because Meals on Wheels disbanded some years ago. Now Kay and volunteers from Carillon and Romeoville took command for this worthy project and enhance the needy and the village of Romeoville. I and many other “old timers” from Romeoville give testimony and a tribute to these fairly new residents. The Golden Ager Carillon residents help with many projects. We do not need to ask.

Ernestine, my friend did Meals on Wheels in Bolingbrook for seven years. She also is a symbol of goodness for helping others. Most of these people are disable and cannot cook. Some of her volunteers do this work during their lunch break. Some also are schoolchildren.

Good things follow and enhance a village and residents that strives to make things better. Most people do not want recognition. I and others applaud their goodness and their need to volunteer.

It does take a village. Our village of Romeoville has truly been “blessed” with people

from Carillon, Grand Haven, Lakewood Falls and etc. Cooperation is an important necessity to bring our village out as a shining haven to all in need.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Plainfield South football coach Ken Bublitz’s team had the bye in the opening round of the Spartan Shootout 7-on-7 tournament that Romeoville hosted last week.

That gave him an opportunity to watch other teams in action. Providence receiver Miles Boykin caught his attention merely by running a pattern.

“That big receiver from Providence, he is something,” Bublitz said. “He ran right past that cornerback like he was standing still, and he’s not slow.”

It may not be possible to watch Boykin and come away unimpressed. The 6-foot-5 senior will be a big-time receiver. He has narrowed his list of suitors to Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon and Virginia Tech.

“I want to be down to five by the end of July,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter where in the country I play. I just want to go where it’s best for me.”

For one more season, that will be at Providence, beginning Aug. 29 against Joliet Catholic at Memorial Stadium. Boykin and tight end/ wide receiver Nate Vejvoda, who recently committed to Miami of Ohio, will form a devastating 1-2 punch.

Quarterback Justin Hunniford is coming off a big junior year, not only as the quarterback who led the Celtics to the Class 6A quarterfinals, but as a member of the Class 4A state championship baseball team.

Luke Senffner is taking over as offensive coordinator after being running backs coach last season.

“Coach [Luke] Senffner’s got some new ideas,” Hunniford said. “He was running backs coach last year. There will be a lot more formations, a lot of window dressing.”

the two. Both have speed and coach Mark Coglianese also described Warfield as powerful. Senior receiver Mike Beller also will provide a lift to the offense.

Hunniford started at quarterback all of last season and said with that experience under his belt, “I’m way ahead of where I was at this time last year,” he said.

“If we get Justin time, we should have a good passing game,” Coglianese said.

That touches on the key question for the Celtics’ offense. How will an offensive line that has no returning starters perform against one of the state’s most difficult schedules?

“The offensive line is all new,” Coglianese said. “We

have a good nucleus, they’re just inexperienced. They’re working hard. They know they’re the key.”

“We graduated five senior linemen but the guys we have are working hard,” Hunniford said. “We have had big lines in the past. This year we will have to rely on their speed and intelligence.”

Vejvoda said he feels the time will come when the line is in sync, and then, watch out.

“Once the offensive line gets the offense down pat, we’re going to be one of the best offenses around,” he said.

And, he doesn’t even care if Boykin is in the spotlight.

“As long as Miles keeps scoring touchdowns, that will be OK,” he said with a laugh.

“Justin [Hunniford] can throw the ball to him all he wants.”

If defenses gear up to stop Boykin?

“If they double-team him, that will only make our other

receivers better,” Coglianese said.

Coglianese said a nucleus of Brendan O’Hara, Jim Sharkey and Emmitt Trost at linebacker is a good starting point for the defense. “We’ve got Danny Miller and Justin Gardner returning at outside linebacker, too,” he said.

In the secondary, Mike Madej is spending most of his summer playing baseball but is expected to be at safety. Baseball player Zach Pych is competing at cornerback along with Joe McGrath. Jack Pell is a senior corner.

“There’s a lot of competition at the DB spots,” Coglianese said. “That’s a good thing. We’re not afraid to play a lot of guys early in the season.

“There’s a lot of competition in the defensive line as well. Tyler Schiemann went downstate in the shot and discus. We hope he steps up there.”

University of St. Francis football fortunes for 2014 took a hit when four-year starter E.J. White exhausted his eligibility last fall.

At least, that would be the popular opinion. But there is no guarantee the end result will be a significant tumble for the Saints.

Yes, White was that good, one of the best in the nation.

While third-year coach Joe Curry would have loved to have him under center for another decade or so, it doesn’t work that way. Successful programs know about replenishing.

A member of the NAIA’s Mid-States Football Association Mideast League, USF finished 7-4 last season and probably could have been a little better than that.

“We thought in a couple of those games we did not play to our potential,” Curry said.

“When you play in the MidStates league, you can’t afford that.”

Quarterback play goes a long way toward determining a team’s success. Trace Wanless, the No. 2 receiver last season because he is not the type of athlete Curry wants standing next to him on the sideline, had a good spring camp and will enter the fall as the No. 1 quarterback.

Competition will come from former Minooka quarterback Mitch Brozovich, who is transferring from NCAA Division II power Minnesota State, along with fifth-year senior Ryne Van Gennep from Lincoln-Way East and red-shirt freshman Don Butkus, who led Mount Carmel to a state championship as a senior.

“What I have seen of our offense, it’s encouraging even though we lose E.J. [White],” Curry said. “Trace [Wanless] has a very strong arm and can run, though he is not quite as fast as E.J. On the other hand,

more explosive.”

Dustin Greenwell cannot be replaced at tight end, but sophomore Adam Morrison “is a kid we think we can utilize,” Curry said.

Add in returning starters Kenny Smith (Minooka), Samie Sabbah (Bolingbrook), Ross Stremme and Zack Webster in the offensive line, and the reasons for optimism are evident.

But more than anything, USF Nation should get good vibes about the upcoming season because of defense.

All-American Jeff Cascella and end Eric Davis are two key returnees in the defensive front. Mike Passo (JCA) and Jamal Graham return at linebacker, and other than cornerback Toney Brown, the secondary is intact. That group includes cornerbacks Josh Woodard and Donte Cobb, and safety Jesse Hogan.

At that, cornerback Breion Tucker (Joliet Catholic) has transferred in and may be a contributor.

“We hope Breion steps up and plays well,” said Curry, the Saints’ defensive coordinator for seven years under former coach Mike Uremovich. “We can play six or seven defensive backs, four or five linebackers and we will use eight or nine defensive linemen.”

The Saints have that degree of defensive depth.

“Especially because we were losing E.J. [White], people thought our offense might take some time to jell,” Curry said. “But if we do what we have been doing on defense, we’ll be OK, even earlier in the season.”

The Saints were 6-5 under Curry in 2012 before last season’s 7-4.

“We have a club that’s not really any different than the past couple of years,” Curry said. “If we play to our potential, don’t turn it over and take it away defensively, we’ll be good.”

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Scott Paddock was pleased to hear the many positive comments about Route 66 Raceway from those who attended last weekend’s Route 66 NHRA Nationals.

Yet the President of that facility, and nearby Chicagoland Speedway, isn’t going to rest on those laurels and intends to make the experience even better for everyone involved.

“I get the message all of the time, not just from racers but also from the fans, as to what a special facility this is and that makes me feel great” Paddock said. “We take a lot of pride in that and want to make sure that it remains the best in class under our watch. So we continue to invest in it, whether it’s new scoreboards, P.A. systems or fan amenities.

“It’s still one of the premier facilities in the world, and we try to take our role as the gatekeeper of this facility very seriously. I give the original ownership a lot of credit since they spared no expense when they built it and to our company’s credit, we understand what a special facility this is and we continue to reinvest in it.”

After a few years where events were cut back at the tracks due to the struggling economy, Paddock is pleased that the facilities are busy again and he’d like even more activity.

“When this facility first opened, it had no shortage of programming going on,” Paddock said. “But during the economic downturn, a lot of that shrank. But market conditions and the economic environment indicate that it’s a good time to add new events and that the demand is there for that so we want to put this facility to use more often on a regular basis.

“Over the last couple of years we’ve slowly and smartly been adding back programming content and new events, and we’re going to continue to do that. We added an Import event this year, possibly

a Mopar bike race next year and also something exciting during the winter months that could be announced in the near future.”

From one of the main stops on the NHRA circuit to the initial race of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, the local facilities operated by International Speedway Corporation not only host some of the sport’s biggest events, but they’re also in an ideal loca-

tion.

“We sit on the outskirts of one of the more vibrant, dynamic cities in the country which is also the third-largest media market,” Paddock said. “We’re researching new events all of the time, both motorsports and non-motorsports. The infrastructure is perfect since we’re near to every major highway and we have beautiful campgrounds, so look for more things.

“If we’re successful then the city of Joliet and county of Will are also successful.

They’ve been great partners, and we appreciate their support. We’ve got people coming in from all over the country ,and they’re staying at our hotels and eating in our restaurants. That’s the benefit of having a sports and entertainment venue in a market like this.”

One of Paddock’s focuses

has been on making the most of the proximity to the famous road that runs just west of the racing facilities.

“As magnificent as this facility is, it lacked a little bit of a personality, of a brand-essence,” Paddock said. “We sit on the historic ‘Mother Road’ and so we decided why not leverage all of the heritage and nostalgia that is Route 66 and bring that to life in the facility? When we did the homework of what historic Route 66 stood for, we found it was about freedom, adventure and sense of community and that’s what these event weekends are all about.

“We started phase one by building a Club 66 and we’ve added a lot of Route 66-branded color and pageantry and next year, we’re going to take that to another level. When this three-year project is all done, you will see the heritage and nostalgia of the historic Route 66 woven into every aspect of this facility to give it that personality that it was missing.”

However, most important of all to Paddock and his team is assuring that fans’ experiences at the Speedway or Raceway will be something special.

“We take a lot of pride as a staff to make sure that the event experience is never the same year from year and we value fan feedback and many of the changes we’ve made are the result of that feedback,” Paddock said. “We’re continuing to reinvent the guest experience and improve it all the time. The consumer has a lot of leverage in how they’re going to spend their money so we have to work harder to offer good value and earn their trust.

“When fans come here, they’re coming to Chicagoland so we’re leveraging all of the magnificence of Chicagoland into our facility. Whether it’s a tram system like we built last year the replicates the L and its lines or the food and beverage options that we offer that are quintessential Chicago, over time see you will see more iconic Chicago things here.”

MORRIS – Sprint car drivers from all over the United States will converge Saturday evening at Grundy County Speedway for a race that is part of the Inaugural King of the Wing Sprint Car Shootout.

The shootout pits the top winged pavement sprint car drivers in the country against each other in a series of six races that will earn one driver the title of “King of the Wing.”

Fans will get a double dose of open-wheel action with a full program of the D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midgets, which concludes with a 50-lap feature as part of the “Freedom 50.”

The sprint car race is the third and final event of the Midwest portion of the King of the Wing Sprint Car Shootout schedule.

Leading up to the race at Grundy, the series competed at Toledo Speedway in Ohio and Winchester Speedway in Indiana.

In late November, the series migrates to the West Coast for a three-race California swing to close out the series with races at Madera Speedway, Irwindale Speedway and Kern County Raceway Park.

The driver with the highest point total in the three Midwest races will earn a $2,500 prize and take home the honor of being named Midwest “King of the Wing.”

The points earned during the round at Grundy go toward the overall King of the Wing point standings in which the top point-earning driver will collect a $5,000 prize.

Timing in with an unofficial lap time of 13.1 seconds, Hamilton believes there is still much more speed to be found on race night.

“I think we will be in the mid-12s for qualifying,” he said.

The list of drivers expected to compete in the sprint car race at Grundy are a who’s who of pavement winged sprint car racing drivers in the United States.

Included are Florida drivers Troy DeCaire and Garrett Green; Mississippi’s Todd Fayard; Californians Jojo Helberg, Cody Gerhardt, Kody Swanson and Tim Skoglund; Indiana’s Aaron Pierce; Michigan’s Jason Blonde; Tim Cox from Illinois, and many others.

The addition of Grundy County Speedway to the King of the Wing series schedule provides one of only two opportunities to see pavement sprint car racing in the state of Illinois in 2014.

Hamilton said the appearance of winged sprint cars on pavement is an event not to miss.

“I really feel these cars put on some of the best short track racing you will ever see,” he said.

On the schedule alongside the King of Wing Sprint Car Shootout and the STARS National Midgets will be the Classic Modfieds, INEX Legends, CSR Super Cups, and the Midwest Legacy Series.

Adult tickets are $25. Children 5-12 are $10. Kids 4-under are free.

Gates open at 4 p.m. Racing starts at 6:30 p.m. The 110th Annual Grundy County Fair is also going on at the Fairgrounds outside the track.

Hoffman takes high road to victory SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Eddie Hoffman chose the high side in an early double- file restart and went on to win the late-model feature last Friday night at Grundy County Speedway.

A mishap involving Mark Sontag, Cooling and Brandon Clubb sent Cooling and Club to the pits for repairs and Sontag to the back of the field.

Hoffman made his move to the front off the restart and

held that spot the rest of the race.

Larry Schuler finished second, with points leader Ricky Baker claiming third. Scott Koerner was fourth and Billy Knippenberg fifth. Mark Sontag Jr., Pat Kelly, Chris Cooling, James Gregait and Tony Scapelli Jr. rounded out the top 10.

Baker set the fast time.

Cooling beat Schuler to the finish line in the first heat and Chuck Sottosanti won

the second heat ahead of Jeff Olson.

Mid-American points leader Tom Knippenberg prevailed in a special 40-lap main event, winning for the sixth time this season.

He beat Kevin Gentile to the finish line.

Kevin Murphy was third, Ron Vandermeir Jr. fourth and John Ventrello fifth.

Luke Baldwinm Vince Cooper, Chuck Yuris, Jim Kachel and Cody Clubb rounded out

the top 10.

Gentile and Ventrello finished 1-2 in the first heat and Murphy and Clubb took those spots in the second heat.

Knppenberg set the fast time.

Heat winner Eddie League won the 25-lap street stock feature, followed by Christy Penrod, fast qualifier and heat runner-up Jake Bradley, Billy Rud, Bob Davis, Rob Scamen, Rita Fields and Darrell Gay. Gay had led much of

the race.

Mike Yuris overtook Danielle Dobczyk on lap nine and went on to capture his first pure stocks feature. Dobczyk finished second, followed by Alex Clubb, Blaine Passini, Dan Schmeissing, Justin Mikel, Ricky Wilson, Zach Sontag, Speancer Leake and Mike Slabenak.

Yuris won the first heat ahead of Steve Henspen and Law captured the second heat with Schmeissing second.

Arrieta takes no-hit bid into eighth for Cubs

By KEN POWTAK The Associated Press BOSTON – Jake Arrieta held the Red Sox hitless until Stephen Drew singled with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat Boston, 2-0, on Monday night in the opener of only the second series between the teams at Fenway Park since 1918.

Six days after losing a perfect game on a leadoff single in the seventh inning of his previous start at Wrigley Field against Cincinnati, Arrieta took his no-hit bid a little deeper. He allowed only Mike Napoli’s fifth-inning walk before Drew lined a clean single to right.

Arrieta (5-1) was lifted by Cubs manager Rick Renteria immediately following the hit that came on the righthander’s career-high 120th pitch.

The 28-year-old Arrieta was given a loud ovation before he even got to the foul line, tipping his cap to the Boston crowd. He tipped it again after crossing the line.

Arrieta (5-1) fanned 10 in just his 11th start after opening the season on the disabled list with shoulder tightness.

Hector Rondon allowed a pinch-hit single to A.J. Pierzynski leading off the ninth before finishing the two-hitter for his 10th save.

In just the second regular season series at Fenway between the clubs since Boston won the 1918 World Series in six games, Arrieta mixed his pitches by combining a sharp cutter and curve with an above-average fastball.

The Red Sox, who arrived in Boston around 4 a.m. after win Sunday night in New York against the Yankees, really didn’t have anything close to a hit.

Arrieta fell behind Napoli, 3-0, before getting a called strike. Napoli then fouled a pitch off before drawing a walk on the next pitch. Xander Bogaerts lined to left after Naploi’s walk.

Arrieta, who started the season on the disabled list with shoulder tightness, made his first start of the season on May 3.

He’s been spectacular in June. Coming in, he allowed just four runs and 20 hits in 31 2-3 innings, winning his three previous starts.

The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Welington Castillo walked and Schier-

holtz followed with his homer into Boston’s bullpen.

Arrieta was acquired by the Cubs last July, along with right-hander Pedro Strop from Baltimore for pitcher Scott Feldman, catcher Steve Clevenger and two international signing bonus slots.

Drew’s hit ensured the Red Sox wouldn’t be no-hit for the first time since Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio pitched a no-no against Boston in 1993 for Seattle.

The last time Boston was no-hit at home Ted Williams flied out to right field for the final out of Detroit ace Jim Bunning’s gem on July 20, 1958 in the opener of a doubleheader.

That doesn’t make us nearly as happy.

Beasley lives for big matches

By RICK MAESE The Washington Post SALVADOR, Brazil – DaMarcus Beasley speaks from experience, of which he has plenty, so no one has to explain to him what’s on the line when the U.S. national team steps on the pitch Tuesday.

“This is what players live for,” Beasley said. “You live to play these types of games.”

By now, Beasley has played many of them, and he knows if the United States can’t get past Belgium in the World Cup’s knockout round, fans could be watching the curtain close one of the most decorated international careers any U.S. player has assembled.

This is the fourth World Cup in which Beasley has appeared in a match. Fewer than 30 players – and no other Americans – have played in that many, a list that includes legends Pele and Diego Maradona.

“Without a doubt,” midfielder Michael Bradley said, Beasley is “one of the best players in U.S. soccer history.”

The U.S. men’s soccer team arrived Sunday in Salvador. The team’s next match today is against Belgium.

“What he has done for club teams he has been on, what he has done for the national team, the consistency, the longevity,” Bradley said, “and he continues to show how important he is for us.”

Beasley’s most impressive accomplishment isn’t that he has survived this long; rather, it’s how he’s done it. He’s not the same player who slipped on a U.S. jersey a dozen years ago. That guy flew up and down the side of the pitch, his legs moving faster than a hummingbird’s wings, Donovan zipping along the opposite side.

“When he was younger, he was probably loud and brash, but he’s calmed down,” U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard said of Beasley. “He’s quiet, he’s a dad – just all the things you’d hope from someone as they mature.”

The energy is still there, enough to allow him to shuttle back and forth between the team’s veterans and its young players.

Tuesday will mark his 11th appearance in a World Cup match, one behind Landon Donovan for most among Americans, and

But unlike that Beasley who was fluttering his way through the 2002 World Cup, this 32-year-old version is able to appreciate the moment. He knows it could be his last chance to help his team return to the tournament’s quarterfinal round.

“It seems like he gets younger and younger. He never gets tired,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “You want to go home at 3 o’clock at night. ‘Say, DaMarcus, do you want to kick the ball around?’

He’s right there.”

The biggest transformation has taken place on the pitch. A 20-year-old Beasley was offensive-minded and goal-oriented. But the Beasley in this tournament, while still a capable attacker, is a fullback tasked with significant defensive responsibilities.

“Back in those days I always wanted to score goals and make the last assist or something like that. But now it’s a dif-

ferent mind-set and I’ve taken on a new position, a new position I like,” said Beasley, who has played for Mexico’s Puebla since 2011 after several seasons bouncing between European teams.

He still gets up and down the pitch and seems to always be around the ball, but Beasley hasn’t scored a goal in international competition since 2008. Still, he’s as important as anyone on the pitch, especially with a back four that have faced plenty of scrutiny heading into the tournament.

“I think that’s the thing with Beas that always excited me,” Howard said, “once he accepted playing fullback, I thought he’d be brilliant. I’m a big fan of wingers becoming fullbacks. I just think it’s a natural progression.”

At times, Beasley can be a sage in cleats, a veteran who’s helping just as much off the pitch.

The U.S. defense still feels like a work in progress, as Klinsmann tweaked the starting lineup before the Germany match, replacing veteran Geoff Cameron with 25-year-old Omar Gonzalez. The younger players say Beasley has been generous with advice but also quick to give encouragement or congratulations.

Other times he sets an example without ever opening his mouth.

“Nothing really freaks him out,” Gonzalez said. “He is always calm, cool, collected and it is great having a guy who’s that secure and knows what is going on in the back line.”

The U.S. team’s fate could hinge on it. Belgium won its three group stage matches by one goal apiece and with the U.S. offense struggling to find the net, Tuesday’s match could be a lowscoring affair. As they have for the past dozen years, the American squad will look again to Beasley, who has changed himself and his game to evolve into the player his team needs most.

“I still play the same,” Beasley said. “I still play with the same heart and desire to win every game, to win every tackle, to maybe score a goal – doesn’t matter.

“I like big games. I like being under the lights. I like playing in front of 80,000 people.”

‘The talk of the hospital’ Romeoville Nazi war camp survivor undergoes new heart valve procedure

Shaw Media Correspondent ROMEOVILLE – To say 93-year-old Leon Lasota is a survivor is putting it mildly.

This Nazi war camp survivor’s latest feat is surviving a new cardiac surgery – a transcatheter aortic valve replacement – to replace a faulty heart valve. It was a risky surgery at his age, but one designed for those who might have difficulty with traditional open surgery.

Still, the procedure required a team of 20, including cardiac surgeons, specialized anesthesiologists and radiologists, heart-lung machine perfusionists and professionals who took and analyzed CAT scans, angiograms and special echocardiograms.

Lasota did so well with the surgery that his daughter Susan Lasota, of Romeoville, said medical staff were taken aback.

“He was the talk of the hospital,” Susan said.

But the risk Lasota took on for the TAVR surgery might be considered a small one relative to the other perils he faced through his life.

Political dissident Lasota was a political dissident in his native Poland back when speaking out got one assassinated. But he had to speak out, he said. It was the right thing to do. Between the Soviet Union, Ukraine and Germany, his beloved country was facing extinction.

For taking that stand, Lasota experienced two assassination attempts; was shot twice in battle; tortured while being interrogated; dropped by parachute into enemy territory and left for dead; sent by train to Siberia; and spent three years in Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald, known for its cruel treatment of prisoners.

Aortic stenosis: A narrowing of the valve opening that leads from the heart to the aorta. May be present at birth, but more often develops later in life, caused by build-up of calcium deposits or by rheumatic fever.

Symptoms of aortic stenosis in adults: • Chest discomfort, which may get worse with activity and reach into the arm, neck or jaw.

• Cough, possibly bloody.

• Breathing problems with exercising.

• Becoming easily tired.

• Heart palpitations.

• Fainting, weakness or dizziness with activity.

At 93, Leon Lasota of Romeoville, a Nazi War hero, had a new cardiac procedure and is feeling well enough procedure. The procedure is to enjoy soup at one of his favorite restaurants, Thayer Brothers in Joliet.

Lasota lost his teeth and his hair from malnutrition, and came close to losing his life before he was released. But always the optimist, he calls the camp his “college.” Working as slave labor, he did learn enough about mechanics to be able to use the knowledge later in life.

In the battles he fought, he was shot twice, was wounded by shrapnel, was dropped into a war zone by parachute and forgotten about, and came within inches of being crushed by a truck after he fell off of it, but again and again he survived.

“My time didn’t come yet,” Lasota said.

He worked in The Silversmith Hotel on Wabash Avenue and later for a private company inspecting aircraft, including the Blackhawk helicopter when it was still a top-secret project. He also worked on two of the Apollo rockets.

Although Lasota regrets nothing, he mourns those he lost, especially a dear uncle who saved his life by lying to the Gestapo that an assassination attempt on him had succeeded.

When the Nazis discovered Lasota was still alive, they beat his uncle to death.

This summer, Lasota will travel to Texas with his family where he will be honored at the George Bush Presidential Library.

“I had a good life,” he said. “I believe in God, and he’s the one who’s keeping me here. Only he knows why. Honest truth.”

MORRIS – Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers recently honored 606 volunteers for their dedicated service during the annual volunteer recognition luncheon. In the past year, volunteers at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers donated a record-breaking 55,451 hours of service.

The greatest number of volunteer hours are donated to the Morris Hospital Patient Transportation Service, which utilizes a team of about 80 volunteers to provide community members with rides to more than 16,000 medical appointments each year. In the past year, volunteers donated 28,897 hours to make the Patient Transportation Service possible.

In addition to patient transportation, volunteers donated 5,877 hours to the emergency response Lifeline service; 4,489 to the main reception desk; 2,728 to the surgical waiting room; 1,281 hours to the outpatient greeter desk; 1,085 hours to

the outpatient surgery desk; 1,085 hours to the courtesy/ rehabilitation shuttle; 905 hours to medical records; 800 hours to special events; 790 hours to sewing; and thousands of additional hours to many other departments and services.

Along with recognition for achieving milestones in service hours, five volunteers were honored with Years of Service awards.

NEW LENOX – In an effort to help keep the community safe and prevent prescription drug overdose, the New Lenox Safe Communities America Coalition, in partnership with the New Lenox Police Department, asks area residents to safely dispose of their unwanted or unused medications.

Safe disposal is important for a number of reasons. Flushing medication down the toilet has environmental repercussions as it can poison the local water stream or septic field. Similarly, throwing medications in the trash allows the opportunity for children or pets to accidentally consume them or end up in landfill groundwater.

Medications can be disposed of at the Unwanted Medication Disposal Container at the New Lenox Police Department, 701 W Haven Ave, New Lenox, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Acceptable items include pills, salves and liquid medications in original containers or nonleaking containers.

Unacceptable items include sharps, needles, IV bags, thermometers and medical waste.

Today’s deal looks similar to yesterday’s, but the correct declarer play is different. As in yesterday’s column, South is in six spades and West leads the heart queen. How should declarer continue?

When North had just enough to raise two spades to three spades, South bid what he hoped he could make.

If declarer were asked immediately to state a line of play, he would probably say that he would take two diamond finesses, getting to the dummy once with the spade queen and once with a heart ruff.

Yes, that is a 76 percent line of play, but loses with this layout.

However, there is an even better strategy. Do you see it?

Dummy has few values, but its three honor cards can all be used with effect. After taking the first trick with his heart ace, South should cash his spade ace, club ace and heart king. Then he ruffs his third heart on the board and leads the club queen.

If East can cover with the king, South ruffs, plays a spade to dummy’s queen, and discards a diamond on the club jack.

Here, though, when East plays a low club, declarer pitches his diamond 10.

Suppose that West wins with his king and leads his last trump. South takes the trick in the dummy and throws his diamond queen on the club jack. He loses only one club and wins six spades, two hearts, one diamond, two clubs and the heart ruff.

Stop drinking to prevent recurrence of pancreatitis Dear Doctor K: My doctor has diagnosed me with chronic pancreatitis. Could this be related to my drinking? Can this condition be reversed?

Dear Reader: Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, the large gland that lies behind the stomach. (I’ve put an illustration of the pancreas on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Most cases of chronic pancreatitis are caused by long-term overuse of alcohol. Alcohol can bring on acute, or sudden, inflammation of the pancreas. If you keep drinking too much, you often get repeated attacks of acute pancreatitis. The pancreas heals itself after each of the first several attacks and resumes normal function.

However, if you continue to drink after repeated bouts of acute pancreatitis, you are more likely to develop chronic, or lasting, pancreatitis. The pancreas is permanently damaged.

The pancreas has two general roles. First, it produces digestive enzymes that are released into your intestine. The enzymes break apart the food you’ve eaten into tiny, digestible packages.

Without this, the energy and nutrients in your food won’t get digested; they won’t get into the blood and be carried throughout the body to all of the cells that need them. As a result, people with chronic pancreatitis can lose

The pancreas also produces hormones that control the level of sugar in your blood. The bestknown hormone is insulin. Over time, a damaged pancreas can fail to produce enough insulin, resulting in diabetes.

Chronic pancreatitis cannot be cured, but you can prevent further damage to your pancreas by eliminating alcohol use.

The most common symptom of pancreatitis is upper abdominal pain. The pain can occur daily or off and on, and it can be mild or intense. Once chronic pain develops, it tends to be long-lasting.

Don’t misunderstand: Pancreatitis is more than just a bad bellyache. An attack of pancreatitis can be very serious, leading to shock and even to death.

For milder types of pain, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) may help.

Narcotic medications help control more severe pain. Many patients require long-term pain medications. If your pain isn’t well-managed, consult a pain specialist.

People who quit drinking are more likely to have only mild or occasional pain. If you continue to

drink alcohol, you’re more likely to have disabling, daily pain that may require hospitalization.

While repeated bouts of pancreatitis from drinking don’t appear to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer, there is a rare inherited form of recurrent pancreatitis that does increase the risk of cancer.

Your doctor will likely prescribe supplemental digestive enzymes. These will help with problems absorbing food, and with resulting vitamin deficiencies. Your doctor also may recommend that you follow a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet that restricts some types of fats. Once your digestive problems are treated, you should gain back weight you’ve lost. Symptoms such as diarrhea should improve.

If you have diabetes caused by chronic pancreatitis, you will require treatment with insulin.

Pancreatitis can also develop from conditions other than drinking too much alcohol. An example is gallstones. Nevertheless, drinking causes most cases. Therefore, for most people, pancreatitis is a disease they bring on themselves – and that they can prevent from recurring.

Pen pal thinks he’s in love Dr. Wallace: For the past year, I have been pen pals with a boy from Nova Scotia, Canada. He’s 16 and I’m 15 and we write to each other once a week. I love having a pen pal and I always answer his letters the day I receive them.

I’ve given him interesting facts about living in Southern California, and he told me he wants to visit California when he graduates.

My problem is that he has been writing that he thinks he is in love with me and he wants me to go steady even though we haven’t met in person. We had exchanged valentines for Valentine’s Day and sent each other photographs, so I guess that is his reason. Now he says that he will graduate in two years and he will come to visit me then.

From his letters, I think he is a nice person and I like him, but I’m not sure going steady is a good idea. I haven’t given him any answer yet, but I’m hesitating and I’d like your opinion before I decide. – Undecided, San Clemente, Calif.

Dear Undecided: It is great fun to have a pen pal, and I can understand the mystery of romance that can creep into a long-distance correspondence, but I see no value in going steady.

Think about this: Why would you eliminate the possibility of dating other boys because you are going steady with someone you have never met and wouldn’t see for at least two years? You would also miss many high school activities, including school dances and the prom.

My advice is to wait until you both have met and had a chance

Dr. Wallace: We have always had a parking problem at our high school, but it is even worse when the weather is bad. Before school was out, the student council discussed the parking problem and they suggested that next year students with a valid driver’s license would be assigned a numbered parking space that would be theirs for the entire year. Since some spaces will be more convenient than others, the plan would be to draw numbers by grade, beginning with the seniors. The number of cards to be drawn from would equal the number of eligible drivers in each class.

Of course, there are some underclass students who think it’s unfair and that all the driving students should draw from the total number of spaces.

Which plan do you think is best for our school? – Darla, Detroit, Mich.

Dear Darla: Seniority has its privileges. Senior licensed drivers should get first choice followed by juniors, and then sophomores.

I like the idea of each student driver having a designated parking spot, but what happens when an “uninformed” driver parks in someone else’s spot? It would help if a sign would be posted to indicate “assigned parking only.”

‘In Bloom’: Growing up is hard to watch

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post When a gun lands in the hands of a defiant 14-yearold, a bleak drama suddenly turns into a stomach-churning suspense film. Every moment seems like it could lead Natia to pull the trigger, whether she’s being stalked by a young man trying to force her into marriage or dealing with the hateful bully who terrorizes her best friend’s walk home from school.

The deadly weapon is usually out of sight, but it’s never far from mind during “In Bloom.” The object charges even the most banal moments as the two girls come of age in Tbilisi, Georgia, during the early 1990s.

this year’s Academy Awards.

It didn’t make the final cut, but it was a worthy contender, even with two first-time actresses in starring roles.

Lika Babluani and Mariam Bokeria are captivating as Eka and Natia, girls who sit next to each other in class, gallivant together after school and stick up for each other when they can.

Each girl has her own troubles at home. Natia’s father is an alcoholic, and his drinking inevitably leads to screaming arguments with her mother, where insults and broken glass fly. Eka’s father, meanwhile, is in prison, possibly for murder, although the girl’s mother won’t disclose the full story.

Life outside the house proves even less comforting.

The two are tasked with navigating a suffocating cluster of a bread line, and their teacher is a tyrannical nightmare. Even the story’s

most gentle narrative thread – Natia’s fledgling relationship with a boy named Kopla (Giorgi Aladashvili) – has an ominous feel. He’s the one who gives her the gun, just before he departs for Moscow. His timing couldn’t be worse, as the sinister Kote (Zurab Gogaladze) is set on turning Natia into a child bride. (Bridal kidnapping has been a persistent problem in countries around the world, including many former Soviet republics.)

The whole unsettling scenario mirrors the state of Georgia at the time. The country was in the midst of civil war, and although no battles are fought where the girls live, reminders are everywhere, from talk of boys taking up arms and leaving town to radio dispatches about bombings in Sukhumi.

Later, that city would be the sight of a horrifying massacre, and the reality of what’s

to come hangs over the movie. Violence is inescapable.

There is an obliqueness to “In Bloom.”

Writer Nana Ekvtimishvili, who directed the movie with Simon Gross, doesn’t spell things out, and the complete story never comes into focus.

That sense also is reflected in the way the movie is shot. In a scene where Eka is dancing during a wedding reception, we never see her feet, even as the other guests are hollering in appreciation. The viewer becomes keenly aware that she is only getting part of the story. But when the truth is so troubling, sometimes part of the story is more than enough.

• “In Bloom” received three out of four stars. The film is unrated and contains strong language. It is in Georgian with subtitles and runs 102 minutes.
