By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The alleged sexual aspects of the Hickory Street murders will be kept from jurors when the fourth and final suspect’s trial begins this week.

Prosecutors and attorneys for Adam M. Landerman, 21, agreed Monday the “sexual activities on the bodies [of the victims],” will not be referred to as he is tried on charges of murder and robbery for the deaths of Eric Glover Jr. and Terrance Rankins in January 2013.

But “other crimes not in evidence” will be allowed by Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak because Landerman and the other suspects allegedly bought cocaine with the money they took from Glover and Rankins’ bodies, destroyed their cellphones and abandoned Glover’s car in another part of Joliet, according to Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Trish McKenna.

On Jan. 9, 2013, Glover and Rankins went to Alisa Massaro’s house in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street with expectations to “party” with Massaro and her friend, Bethany McKee, investigators have said. Instead, Joshua Miner

and Landerman were waiting with the young women after the four allegedly made plans to attack and rob them.

Miner strangled Rankins while Landerman allegedly strangled Glover; they got about $100, desecrated the bodies and made plans to dismember them before police interrupted them, according to testimony at previous trials.

After the bodies were covered with a sheet, Landerman, Massaro and Miner tried to have sex either Eric Glover on top of or next Jr. to them, McKee told investigators.

ty State’s Attorney James Glasgow said a video of the interview will be played during Sepulveda’s testimony, but prosecutors also want to give the jury a transcript of the conversation.

“There are some times, especially toward the beginning, where he speaks quietly. ... The bottom line is we want to make sure this jury knows what Adam Landerman said,” Glasgow said.

Jury selection begins in murder trial

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Jury selection has begun in the case of a man accused of slaying his uncle six years ago.

“Good morning ladies and gentlemen. My name is Jason Gonzalez. I’m the criminal defendant in this case,” Gonzalez, 29, told prospective jurors Monday.

Gonzalez, who faces from 45 years to life in prison, has chosen to represent himself.

Prosecutors say Gonzalez was living with his uncle’s family in the 22700 block of South Cedar Road in Manhattan

Township until two months before the Sept. 17, 2009, slaying.

Gonzalez allegedly broke in and used a handgun to kill Lance Goebel, 48, and fled in a stolen car.

Police used cellphone data to track Gonzalez. While being held at the police station, he Jason confessed to his Gonzalez mother while she was recording the conversation for detectives, authorities have said.

Gonzalez’s mother told The Herald-News shortly after her son’s arrest that he was diag-

nosed with borderline personality disorder before being discharged from the Army.

Prosecutors believe Gonzalez had become “inappropriately fixated” on Goebel’s children before he was evicted.

When 34 prospective jurors were led into Judge Edward Burmila’s courtroom Monday morning, Gonzalez was wearing a blue shirt with white stripes, a dark tie, black pants, white socks and black shoes without laces.

One prospective juror, retired Chief Judge Rodney Lechwar, was stricken from the pool before proceedings began.

“Nothing’s overemphasized in the crime scene video,” the judge said afterward.

An evidence technician is expected to identify some garbage bags police found under the bodies when testifying, but will not bring out the bags, which have some blood on them, from the evidence container to show the jury, Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Walsh said.

“The garbage bags contained the fingerprints of this defendant,” Walsh said.

Jury selection for the trial is expected to start Tuesday.

The trial is expected to last eight or nine days, lawyers told Bertani-Tomczak.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – AJ Shaw helped spread the mulch surrounding the gardens at Evergreen Terrace Apartments – earth that provides not just nourishing foods, but the growth of skills for area youth.

Shaw, 16, worked Monday morning with head gardener and resident Rodger Humphrey to rake the mulch around several raised garden boxes. The gardens were established this year thanks to a $3,000 grant from the We WILL Grow School and Community Garden Program offered by Will County.

Shaw, a Lockport area resident who stays at Evergreen Terrace on the weekends, wanted to help out with the garden that will assist the children living in the apartments.

“I like it. I want to see some flowers,” Shaw said.

Several people involved in bringing the community gardens program to fruition said they not only will help children and adults at the apartments stay healthy, but also teach them how to grow and sell produce in a strong Chicago-area food market.

Community gardens, such as the one at Evergreen Terrace, also help improve quality of life, reduce crime rates and improve property values in low-income areas, said Liz Protich, resident services coordinator.

“It gives people hope,” she said. “They see there’s something going on.”

Pecora said the community gardens program will improve the health of children and adults in Will County.

Countywide, 36 percent of residents have preventable chronic illnesses, such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, she said.

“This is just using food as a tool for better health because once kids grow food, they are more inclined to eat and want it. And they go home and say, ‘Hey, mom and dad, I love this tomato, can we get more?’ ” Pecora said.

Protich said she pursued a grant to create gardens at Evergreen Terrace – which sits beside a playground and the Des Plaines River – because residents drove efforts to create a garden last year. Hum-

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – In an attempt to curtail assertions the shutdown of the railroad crossing at Walter Strawn Drive created hazardous conditions along roadways and caused unprecedented traffic backups, the village of Elwood commissioned a study it says proves otherwise.

The $47,100 independent study – paid for by Elwood and conducted by the national firm Kimley-Horn – looked at traffic counts, capacity and flow at a number of key intersections in peak traffic during a 13-hour period on March 18.

Kimley-Horn also evaluated two potential routes for trucks leaving and entering the Joliet and Elwood intermodals – Arsenal Road to Interstate 55, and Laraway Road to I-55 and Interstate 80.

The Illinois Commerce Commission in January shut down the Walter Strawn railroad crossing amid safety concerns, forcing thousands of trucks onto Laraway Road, I-55 and the county-owned Arsenal Road.

The 102-page report shows traffic capacity remains generally “adequate” – even

during morning, midday and evening peak periods. The study graded each intersec-

tion based on the average vehicle delay per vehicle passing through.

The study evaluated whether key intersections can accommodate current traffic volumes. That includes the Arsenal Road/Elwood International Port Road intersection, which sees more than 18,000 vehicles a day, according to the report. About 71 percent of these movements are trucks.

City officials: Amtrak collision in Wilmington ‘unfortunate’

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Friday’s collision in Wilmington between an Amtrak train and a semitrailer at the New River Road railroad crossing marks the first incident there since 1998, according to data from the Illinois Commerce Commission.

With Friday’s incident, seven collisions have occurred at that railroad crossing since 1972, including one that resulted in one fatality. Three other incidents resulted in injuries.

A spokesperson for the ICC said the state agency does not

track collisions or derailments that occur away from crossings.

Eleven people were injured in Friday’s collision, although none were life-threatening, officials said. The incident happened about 4 p.m.

Wilmington city officials on Monday called the incident “isolated” and “unfortunate” – the result of a truck driver’s “poor choice” in attempting to go around the crossing gates on New River Road. The driver was reportedly on his way to a nearby U.S. Cold Storage facility with cold meats, including bacon.

After the incident, Wilmington police issued the driver, Keith D. Morris of Joliet,

a citation for disregarding a signal indicating the approach of a train while the gates were closing.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said Monday it’s routine for Amtrak to recover damages from the individual or company at fault, but couldn’t confirm if that process has started in this case.

Magliari applauded Wilmington’s swift response Friday.

The municipality had school buses to charter Amtrak passengers out to Wilmington High School, he said, where food and drinks were provided.

“The folks in Wilmington reacted immediately,” Magliari

said, adding that Amtrak passengers were placed on a charter bus headed to Chicago a few hours after the initial collision.

First Ward Alderman John Persic Jr. said the crossing is “as safe as it can be,” with signs, lighting and crossing gates.

But whenever something like this happens, city officials discuss if anything can be done to prevent similar occurrences, Persic said.

There’s only been one fatality at the New River Road crossing since 1972. The accident occurred in September 1998, involving a train and semitrailer.

Joliet Reads More than 10,000 fans kicks off today came to Star Wars Day Students to be recognized at game

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 will kick off the 13th year of the Joliet Reads program Tuesday at the Slammers baseball game.

The 13th anniversary of the community reading campaign will be marked by the recognition of 30 District 86 students who won the Joliet Reads bookmark contest.

They’ll be recognized for their work during pre-game activities Tuesday at Silver Cross Field, school officials said.

The bookmarks the students created will be published, printed next school year and given out to children and adults to promote reading.

“They all have their own unique pictures of anything to do with reading,” District 86 spokeswoman Sandy Zalewski said.

The Joliet Reads program launched in August 2003 and was spearheaded by a committee that include District 86, the Joliet Public Library, parents, teachers and school staff members. The program aims to promote reading among all ages.

Every month during the school year, different books are promoted to encourage reading. Some of the chil-

dren’s book titles for May 2015 included “Found” by Salina Yoon, “The Year of Billy Miller” by Kevin Henkes and “Like Bug Juice on a Burger”

by Julie Sternberg.

In addition to the recognition at the Joliet Slammers game, the Joliet Reads program has another initiative that sends gift packs to families having a baby at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. The gift pack includes a new book for families and reading tips.

Zalewski said District 86 continues to stress the importance of reading.

During the past school year, students in two bilingual classrooms at Marycrest Early Childhood Center read more than 7,000 books with their families, Zalewski said.

“We encourage our teachers to do activities in their classroom and reading out loud snippets from books to get kids excited about them and check it out at the library to see what happens,” she said. “It makes it exciting for them to read the books.”

She said District 86 keeps school libraries open twice a week for families to read and check out books. Joliet Reads also has other programs to encourage and promote literacy for adults.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Public Library estimates more than 10,000 people came to this year’s Star Wars Day, making it the biggest crowd yet, and organizers are making plans to make next year’s event bigger.

The event held Saturday is organized by the library, which on Monday began plans for Star Wars Day 2016.

Next year’s event could include for the first time re-enactments of movie scenes.

Event Coordinator Roger Burns said 4,200 brochures were handed out to adults and 4,900 badges were given to children at the free event.

But the total number of attendees could be much higher because it is unlikely every adult took a brochure.

“I might be underrating it,” Burns said. “There could have been more [people].”

Burns said there was so much interest in the lightsaber demonstrations staged Saturday that he wants to get another block of Chicago Street closed next year for re-enactments of Star Wars battles and dramatic presentations based on the movies.

He said the more than 120 re-enactors from Star Wars costume clubs who came to the event would make such staged events possible. More are likely to come next year,

Burns said.

Two lightsaber demonstrations were held Saturday in the auditorium at the Joliet Area Historical Museum by members of costume clubs.

“It was packed, and there were hundreds of people who were still disappointed that they didn’t get to see it,” Burns said. “Those guys could have done it all day. If they did that for six hours, they would still be filled all day.”

Burns’ idea is to create a bigger stage by closing off a second block of Chicago Street to the south for movie scene and battle re-enactments.

“We’d like to grow it,” he said.

Burns said he was told by

members of the clubs, which are international organizations, that the more than 120 re-enactors in movie-authentic costumes attending Saturday was second only to a Star Wars event held in Anaheim, California.

Star Wars Day is centered at the Joliet Public Library in downtown Joliet. Sections of Clinton and Chicago streets alongside the library were closed off for the event.

Just how many people might come next year is hard to tell. Before Saturday, Burns did not know if the 2014 turnout of 7,000 people would be the peak. Just two years ago, Star Wars Day attracted 4,500 people.

Star Wars Day 2016 is tentatively scheduled for June 4.

“I’ve talked with several booking agents since he [Triebes] went public who were shocked that the place could only hold 500,” O’Dekirk said.

began checking how many people were attending performances at Mojoes after getting complaints that shows were oversold.

“It was a question of safety,” O’Dekirk said. “We had to send people in there to see how many people were in the club.”

Kuypers has not returned calls for comments about her plans since Friday, when the city announced she would take over the club.

On her Facebook page, Kuypers said she planned to keep scheduled shows that had not yet been canceled. She also said she planned to keep heavy metal music, which was the mainstay of Mojoes, while adding country, folk, blues and other genres.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Friday, when the suspected gunman

followed the victim in his car until they reached the parking lot for Woody’s Bar, 1008 E. Washington St., Joliet, Deputy Police Chief Edgar Gregory said.

JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said Monday the former owner of Mojoes of Joliet promoted the club as having twice capacity actually allowed.

The downtown club is scheduled to reopen Friday as The Tree under new ownership.

O’Dekirk said city officials already have discussed ways to increase capacity with new owner Betsy Kuypers. But he said city officials had the same conversations with Mojoes’ owner Chris Triebes.

“He knew what the capacity limit was. There was an ongoing discussion,” O’Dekirk said.

Triebes did not return a phone call or email seeking comment Monday. But he told The Herald-News last week that Joliet police were watching the club “like a hawk” and he would not have oversold shows under those conditions.

The capacity at Mojoes is 500.

O’Dekirk said the city has a copy of the contract for a May 17 event, when the club was rented out, that describes the capacity at Mojoes as 1,000.

There was a fight outside the club May 17 and gunshots were fired, although no one was hit.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Village trustees have directed staff to work on a “Cupcake Law” ordinance that would allow local home-based baked goods businesses to operate with permits.

At a Committee of the Whole meeting Monday evening, the Village Board generally supported the ordinance, provided it addresses issues raised about inspections and information about the home businesses.

“This makes some sense because it allows some flexibility for initiative for small sale businesses in town,” Trustee Bill Lamb said.

The support means Plainfield may soon join Joliet and Channahon on a growing list of local municipalities that have passed a form of the ordinance.

Jonathan Proulx, a village planner, said the village has been talking with two potential businesses that inquired about their home baked goods businesses being permitted according to the Illinois “Cupcake

Law.” The state law was signed last June, giving home-kitchen bakeries making less than $1,000 a month exemptions from local health regulations. It requires that a business sell non-hazardous baked foods and that items should come with notices indicating home kitchen production. Also, county health departments may inspect business in the event of complaints or disease outbreaks.

Trustees agreed that they want to support start-up businesses in the village. But they want to make sure several issues are resolved before they vote on the ordinance at a future board meeting.

Proulx told the board the question is between balancing health protection with supporting free enterprise, adding that neither the village nor the Will County Health Department currently has the manpower to inspect the businesses Trustee Edward O’Rourke said the question of who will be investigating any “complaints” or “outbreaks” still is an issue.

“I agree to some type of license so we can keep track of who is providing what services,” he said.

Trustee Bill Lamb noted churches have been doing bake sales for years. So having local businesses also provide baked goods wouldn’t hurt. Other trustees agreed.

“I don’t think there is a raging epidemic of unsanitary conditions,” Trustee Jim Racich said about home kitchens.

Also on Monday, trustees decided to hold off on adopting a policy that addresses the increase of food trucks at events like the downtown Plainfield Cruise Nights.

Some trustees had concerns about the impact food trucks have on brick-and-mortar restaurants and established food places, as well as making sure the village wasn’t favoring one or the other. But Village Administrator Brian Murphy said the village will continue monitoring the food truck situation.

The flight to Chicago almost didn’t happen for Whitten and Rinke. After being in the airport in Phoenix, Arizona, for so long, they thought about switching planes until the plane Summerfield was planning to be on arrived.

JOLIET – Cindy Whitten said saving Karol Summerfield’s life was like instinct.

Summerfield was on a flight June 2 to Chicago when she drank water that went into her lungs, preventing her from breathing. She jumped out of her seat and flailed.

That’s when Cindy Whitten and Lynne Rinke, both of Joliet, stepped in to save her life. They both are nurses.

“It was just kind of like instinct. It was just the fact that everybody was around us and people were asking, ‘Oh, are you a nurse?’ It’s like, you don’t even think about [it],” Whitten said. “It’s like a nurse is always on duty.”

Even if they are about 10,000 feet in the air.

Summerfield never learned their names and the nurses didn’t learn hers.

Wilson said she could not discuss details about the hearing or the lawsuit, citing pending litigation.

In 2014, about 10,910 people were on the IDOC mental health caseload, meaning they received ongoing services for mental health. A little more than 4,660 were considered seriously mentally ill.

IDOC is under pressure from a federal lawsuit that challenges the conditions of the state agency’s prison system for people with serious mental illnesses. In an attempt to settle the case, IDOC agreed with a court-appointed monitor to turn the 484-bed facility into a treatment center for severely mentally ill offenders.

JOLIET – A lawyer representing thousands of mentally ill state inmates in a 2007 lawsuit against the Illinois Department of Corrections said potential state budget cuts are no excuse to slow compliance with a court-ordered overhaul of the state agency’s mental health care system.

“The state budget cuts cannot justify the years and years of failure to provide adequate care,” Harold Hirshman, an attorney in the lawsuit, said Monday. “As for the Joliet facility, they say they are on time. We have nothing but their word.”

Nicole Wilson, IDOC spokeswoman, on Monday said the state agency is on track to finish the conversion of the Illinois Youth Center in Joliet into a facility for inmates with severe mental ill-

nesses by February 2016.

It’s unclear whether Springfield’s budget impasse will affect IYC Joliet’s opening by that time.

The $8.6 million needed for IYC Joliet’s operational expenses for the last quarter of fiscal 2016 was included in the spending plan Gov. Bruce Rauner proposed in February.

But budget talks with a Democrat-controlled Legislature have since derailed, leaving a nearly $4 billion hole heading into next year’s fiscal cycle.

A spokeswoman for the governor’s office could not be reached for comment Monday.

Wilson said Blinderman Construction Company has been contracted to repurpose IYC Joliet into a full residential treatment facility for inmates with severe mental illnesses. Work on the project began earlier this year.

OBITUARIES RANDY C. BANKROFF Randy C. Bankroff, age 60, of Lockport, passed away peacefully at home on June 6, with family at his side, after a courageous fight against cancer.

Survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Dawn; and his daughters, Ashley (Andrew Vail) and Kori (Matt Walick); his cherished grandchildren, Wyatt and Riley; his loving parents, Ernie and Ardis Bankroff, of Elwood; his sister, Lynn Marshall; niece, Ryane Schumann; and his inlaws, Janet and Dean Berryman.

Randy loved fishing, camping, and watching football, ... especially The Ohio State Buckeyes and one of his favorite places to visit was Wisconsin. He will be dearly missed by family and friends but never forgotten.

Norm was born in Manhattan, Illinois, on November 3, 1927, and lived on the family farm until he served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He later owned and operated Penn Pacific Trucking Company in California.

Norm was always willing and enjoyed helping his family and friends.

He enjoyed stock car racing and was inducted in the Mazon Speed Bowl and Grundy County Speedway Hall of Fame. After moving to California he owned and raced thoroughbred horses for many years. He enjoyed golfing.

Proceeded in death by his parents, Oscar and Wilhelmina (Horn) Fritz; brother, Kenneth Fritz; and sister, Dorothy (Donald) Walsh.

Survived by his immediate family members; brother, Glenn (Bernadine) Fritz. Richard (Cindy) Fritz and Debra (Rob) Farley were his godchildren. Kathleen Ann “Kay” Gatz (Nee: Marietta), passed away peacefully Sunday morning, May 31, 2015, at her home, surrounded by family and friends.

She was born in Joliet in 1946, and was a resident of Lockport for many years. Kay taught English at Walsh Junior High School where she met and married her husband, Gerry. After their marriage, they moved to New England, where

Kay taught high school English at Winnisquam High School in Tilton, New Hampshire, and Ashland High School in Ashland, New Hampshire, finally settling in Brattleboro in 1982 with her husband and daughter Katharine. Kay was an avid reader and writer.

After retirement, Kay relished the time she spent with her granddaughters Harper and Paisley and her favorite place to be was on the deck of her Brattleboro home enjoying her gardens and eating sour cherries from her favorite tree.

Preceded in death by her parents, James and Rose (Pesavento) Marietta.

Survived by her husband, Gerry; her daughter, Katharine (William) Rancourt; her granddaughters, Harper Marietta and Paisley Bryce Rancourt, all of NH; her sister, Sandra Young of Lockport; nephews, Jim (Julie) Young, Jerry Young, John (Anna) Young and Joel (Ami) Young. Legal observers wonder if Hastert violated the old adage about never answering questions without a lawyer present when investigating authorities’ approached him at the end of last year.

Usually, a lawyer emerges within hours of formal charges. In Hastert’s case, one wasn’t listed on the court docket until Monday afternoon: Prominent Washington, D.C.-based attorney Thomas C. Green.

The indictment says FBI investigators questioned Hastert on Dec. 8, 2014, about w i t h d r a w i n g Dennis h u n d r e d s o f Hastert thousands of dollars in cash at a time. It was his answer – he said he was keeping it at home because he didn’t trust banks – that led to the lying charge.

Any lawyer would almost certainly have advised Hastert in that FBI interview to keep his mouth shut. A high-powered legal team might also have tried to hammer out a deal immediately with prosecutors,

perhaps proposing that Hastert plead guilty in exchange for dismissing a count. An agreement also could have avoided a formal indictment, potentially keeping some embarrassing allegations under wraps.

Green has decades of experience defending politicians and CEOs, and represented former Assistant Attorney General Robert Mardian during Watergate and several government officials during the Whitewater independent counsel investigations, according to Green’s biography on the Sidley Austin website.

ENTERING A PLEA

Hastert is expected to step before U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin on Tuesday and enter a plea.

Prosecutors haven’t said if they will ask Durkin to recuse himself after Federal Election Commission records showed he donated $500 to the “Hastert for Congress” campaign in 2002 and $1,000 in 2004, but the arraignment gives them the opportunity to make that request. Durkin was an attorney at the Mayer Brown law firm in Chicago at the time of the contributions.

‘PRIOR MISCONDUCT’

It’s unclear whether government attorneys will speak Tuesday about the secret Hastert allegedly sought to conceal by paying the still-unidentified person the indictment refers to only as “Individual A.” Prosecutors typically provide an overview of the charges at arraignments, occasionally adding some new details.

A person familiar with the allegations told The Associated Press that the payments were intended to conceal claims Hastert sexually molested someone decades ago.

Prosecutors do not describe the act underlying the case in the indictment, which some legal observers said was peculiar. The indictment does hint at it, saying that whatever happened took place during Hastert’s teaching and coaching years from 1965 to 1981 in Yorkville, a suburb of Chicago.

THE LAW AT ISSUE

The banking law that prosecutors have invoked was primarily designed to catch drug dealers and other underworld figures laundering illegal proceeds. Using it in a case of alleged extortion is novel,

especially since authorities aren’t targeting, at least publicly, the extorter but the one being extorted — Hastert. And no one in Hastert’s case is alleging that the money the politician-turned-lobbyist withdrew was illegal or derived from some crime enterprise.

The indictment alleges Hastert first started taking out $50,000 at a time, but changed course when the huge withdrawals generated Currency Transaction Reports mandated under banking law, the indictment alleges. Hastert then began withdrawing increments of less than $10,000 to skirt the reporting ruling, according to prosecutors.

Hastert’s lawyers could try to employ what’s called “a compulsion defense” – that Hastert was compelled to break the banking rules and to lying to the FBI because he was being blackmailed, said Chicago defense attorney Joseph Lopez, who is not involved in the case.

The downside of that strategy, Lopez says: “Hastert would have to take the stand – and he would have to admit to everything in the past and reveal his secrets.”

Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes said the outcry and finger-pointing following the Walter Strawn Drive shutdown was unwarranted. Although the closure may have caused a few headaches early on, the shutdown, backed by Elwood, didn’t create today’s mess, he said.

“The study shows that, while there is heavy traffic in the region with Walter Strawn, it is not obstructive and the current infrastructure meets those peak demands,” Hayes said.

The county wants the state to take over the road.

“We had a very, very productive meeting in Springfield a week ago,” Walsh Sr. said.

Before the closure, CenterPoint’s attorney cautioned against the move, saying it would cause traffic backups and hazardous road conditions, as well as add miles to truckers’ routes.

While IDOT sided with Elwood and other parties leading up the Jan. 28 closure, the state

agency reversed course earlier this year, joining CenterPoint Properties in a request to the ICC to reopen the crossing.

Since that time, IDOT attorneys have said they have “new

evidence” showing the negative effects the closure has had on the region, according to ICC hearing transcripts. But IDOT on more than one occasion asked to delay the presentation of its impact study.

Elwood’s attorney submitted the Kimley-Horn report Friday to the ICC judge overseeing the case.

Max Bosso, Elwood’s engineering and public works director, said Friday the crossing closure is not the source of the region’s traffic issues. A regional plan for Will County addressing intermodal truck traffic is a must, he said.

Hayes said there has been a major change in the traffic flow along Route 53 in Elwood.

Since the closure, there hasn’t been a single crash into the railroad gate, he said.

CHICAGO – The federal indictment of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert has raised a long list of puzzling legal questions, including why prosecutors filed banking charges in a case that, at its core, appears to involve extortion and sexual abuse. No defense attorney promptly came forward to publicly rebut the charges, and Hastert might have avoided some embarrassing details becoming public had he negotiated a plea agreement.

Some answers could come Tuesday, when the 73-year-old is scheduled to make his first court appearance since a May 28 indictment said he agreed to pay $3.5 million to someone from his days as high school teacher and wrestling coach not to reveal a secret about past misconduct. Obama: U.S. lacks ‘complete strategy’ for training Iraqis

By JULIE PACE and NEDRA PICKLER The Associated Press ELMAU, Germany – Acknowledging military setbacks, President Barack Obama said Monday the United States still lacks a “complete strategy” for training Iraqi forces to fight the Islamic State. He urged Iraq’s government to allow more of the nation’s Sunnis to join the campaign against the violent militants.

Almost one year after American troops started returning to Iraq to assist local forces, Obama said the Islamic State remains “nimble, aggressive and opportunistic.” He touted “significant progress” in areas where the U.S. has trained Iraqis to fight but said forces without U.S. assistance often are ill-equipped and suffer from poor morale.

Obama and Abadi also met one-on-one shortly before the president departed for Washington.

In both public and private, Obama urged Abadi and his

Shiite-led government to allow more Sunnis to fight the Islamic State. The White House long has blamed Iraq’s sectarian divisions for stoking the kind of instability that allowed the militants to thrive.

“We’ve seen Sunni tribes who are not only willing and prepared to fight ISIL, but have been successful at rebuffing ISIL,” Obama said.

“But it has not been happening as fast as it needs to.”

In Washington, the highest-ranking Sunni in Iraq’s government said Sunni tribes still are receiving insufficient training and inferior weapons compared to the national army. Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri put the onus for fixing that on Baghdad, saying it should provide clear assurances that the tribes will receive the necessary weapons.

“Guarantees create confidence, and we need confidence,” al-Jabouri told a small group of reporters, speaking through an interpreter.

There is no special unit to handle sexual assault complaints despite their sensitive nature, and investigators juggle dozens of cases at once dealing with all aspects of gender discrimination.

Today, the department is opening more sexual assault investigations than it is closing, with some still pending after four years.

In his 2016 budget, President Barack Obama proposed a 31 percent increase for the Office of Civil Rights, which would allow it to add 210 full-time staff members to its roster of 544.

“Do we need more people? Absolutely,” Catherine Lhamon, assistant secretary of the Office of Civil Rights, re-

cently told The Associated Press. “My staff are carrying 20-25 cases a person on average at any given time, that’s a very, very burdensome caseload. I’d like to see more people to move these cases, because I think that’s what the scope of civil rights demands.”

Some advocates say expanding the scope of investigations has serious ramifications for those waiting for their complaints to be resolved.

Emily Kollaritsch, now 21, is a recent graduate of Michigan State University, which has been under investigation since 2011.

Kollaritsch said she was assaulted by a fellow student during her freshman year, and school officials ultimately held him responsible. But the administrative review took 285 days, she said, and the student was not even suspended.

Instead, he was placed on probation and made to write an essay about changing his behavior, and had his on-campus movements restricted, according to a copy of a disciplinary letter that Kollaritsch provided to the AP. The AP generally does not identify victims of sexual assault, but Ortiz and Kollaritsch have come forward to help draw attention to the problem.

After the university closed her case, Kollaritsch filed a complaint with the Department of Education in October 2013. In February of last year, the department opened an investigation.

That’s when school administrators began antagonizing her, Kollaritsch said, by questioning whether her case was serious enough to warrant a Title IX complaint. It got so bad, she said, that she took a semester off and returned with a service dog to help manage her stress.

Gay couples in Guam start applying for marriage licenses

Loretta M. Pangelinan, 28, and Kathleen M. Aguero, 29, drew the No. 4 slot as couples were assigned numbers when the Office of Vital Statistics at 8 a.m. Tuesday. But out of respect, they were allowed to be the first gay couple to get their marriage license.

They celebrated by planning to marry right away in a

The couple that drew No. 1 were Deasia Johnson of Killeen, Texas, and her fiance, Nikki Dismuke, 37, of New Orleans. They have been together three years and are in the military.

They also planned to marry immediately, and they asked Pangelinan and Aguero to be witnesses for their ceremony.

“How can you not be emotional?” said Pangelinan, who began to cry when she heard the request.

Gay marriage in Guam became possible after U.S. District Judge Frances Tydingco-Gate-

wood on Friday struck down Guam’s prohibition on samesex marriage. The developments in Guam also come as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to issue a decision on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage this month.

Pangelinan and Aguero sued April 13 after a registrar denied them a marriage license because Guam law defines marriage as between two people of the opposite sex.

The couple based their lawsuit on a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision in favor of same-sex marriage. The U.S. District Court of Guam falls under the 9th Circuit.

Attorney General Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson directed officials to begin processing same-sex marriage applications, but territorial officials, backed by Gov. Eddie Calvo, territory, refused. The governor sued, and he was represented by an outside firm because the attorney general didn’t agree with the governor’s lawsuit.

Although the ban was struck down Friday, Tydingco-Gatewood gave the territory a couple of days to prepare the marriage applications.

Lillian Lee, 57, and her partner, Susan Diaz, 65, also were in line to get their marriage license application.

Lee thanks Pangelinan and Aguero for making “gay marriage possible.”

“I’m happy to be married on Guam,” she added.

Currently, gay couples can marry in 36 states, the District of Columbia and Guam.

About 160,000 people live on Guam, an island about 3,800 miles west of Hawaii. Its residents are U.S. citizens, but they don’t have the right to cast ballots for the country’s president.

The territory elects a delegate to the U.S. House, but the delegate is not allowed to vote on legislation. Guam has no representation in the U.S. Senate.

Olivia Ortiz was elated when the U.S. Department of Education contacted her in June 2013 to tell her it was opening an investigation into her complaint the University of Chicago had mishandled her sexual assault case.

A junior at the time, she had run out of options on campus after a dean decided against an investigation and instead recommended an informal mediation between her and a student she said had assaulted her in the spring of her freshman year.

Finally, Ortiz said, she felt someone was on her side.

Two years later, Ortiz still is waiting.

The reason: a burgeoning backlog at the education department that advocates say is leaving victims to languish longer without resolution, and could discourage others from coming forward at all.

“I definitely appreciate the Department of Education taking their time,” said Ortiz, who has since left campus and moved back in with her parents in Arizona, citing anxiety about continuing her studies in an environment where she felt unsafe.

“But for me, I just wanted some immediate relief. I feel like sometimes there’s no light at the end of the tunnel.”

College students who believe their schools mishandled their allegations of sexual assault have opted increasingly to use the federal gender discrimination statute known as Title IX to press the institutions for stronger action.

Last May, the department made public a list of 55 schools under in-

vestigation for Title IX complaints stemming from sexual violence, a figure that has more than doubled. As of June 3, the agency had 129 open sexual assault cases at 116 schools across the country. Those complaints are not criminal cases, but if a university is found to be in violation of Title IX, it risks losing federal funding, a massive piece of most schools’ budgets.

At the same time, the department has altered its approach to investigating such complaints. Instead of assessing them as isolated cases, the agency now sees each one as an opportunity for a broader assessment of a school’s overall compliance.

Advocates praise the department’s commitment to evaluating the culture of each college under investigation.

But the spike in complaints and the broader scope of the responses have swamped the department’s investigators. Groups that support victims worry the lengthy reviews, which may bring improvements to the universities in question, wind up stranding the people filing the complaints.

The long wait for a resolution also extends the anguish for anyone wrongly accused. And it frustrates schools as they seek vindication of their efforts to make campuses safer.

Even before the department adopted its more comprehensive approach, Title IX investigations could take years.

Part of that lengthy timeline has to do with a lack of funding and, more specifically, staffing.

In 2014, the education department’s Office of Civil Rights received more than 10,000 complaints, including those under Title IX, a broad law that bans gender-based discrimination in federally funded programs. Less than

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Canoe theft saddens grandkids To the Editor:

To the person who stole my family’s canoe: It was really nifty how you planned to steal the canoe after I got all the flood debris cleaned up and the river receded enough for you to make a clean getaway.

My grandkids waited all winter for a nice canoe ride down the mighty DuPage River, but when I told them you stole the canoe, they were very sad indeed.

I tried political correctness by telling my grandkids the people who stole the canoe were really not bad people, they were good people who just did a bad thing. My granddaughter retorted immediately by saying, “No bupa, they really are bad people!” Well, so much for political correctness.

However, you did teach me a lesson on

how you criminal people help the economy.

Because of your kind, I have to buy locks, chains, security cameras and alarms to try to protect my property, which is good for the businesses supplying those items. I’ll eventually have to put bars on my windows, and the village will have to hire more police to keep track of all this criminal activity, which will create more jobs.

BTW, in your haste of making that small heist of my canoe, you forgot the paddles.

And since I really am eager to meet your kind of people face to face, I set up some trip lines to let me know when you return for those paddles. This way, I can meet you in person and really let you have those paddles.

Warring political parties in Springfield don’t get it After five months, you’d think the warring parties at the Illinois Statehouse would have learned something about each other. Instead, last week’s bitter and divisive House overtime session showed they still fundamentally misunderstand one another.

What follows are some questions I’m hearing, and my own responses.

Republicans: Why would the House Democrats propose such a weak workers’ compensation reform plan last week when they knew Gov. Bruce Rauner wants so much more?

The Democrats’ plan didn’t contain much real-world progress, and actually regressed in part. Unless you read between the lines. Workers’ comp insurance is essentially a no-fault system designed to keep disputes out of the courts. Republicans have tried for years to insert “causation” into the system in order to weed out employees whose injuries are mostly not the fault of employers.

But House Speaker Michael Madigan’s bill used the term “causal” in relation to a cer-

tain kind of injury. This was a pretty good indication that after more than 30 years as speaker, Madigan is moving away from his complete opposition to causation standards.

The speaker appears willing to deal on this topic because he attached his language to a House bill that now can be amended by the Senate. If he’d used a Senate bill, it would’ve been “take it or leave it.”

So, build on the causation issue and ignore his other items that set the negotiations back. It’s not rocket science.

Democrats: Why won’t the Republicans accept the fact we’re moving in their direction, but can only go so far? We’re not Republicans.

Rauner believes Republican legislators were far too content in the past to accept any crumbs the Democrats would offer. Those days are over. We now have a Republican governor who is demanding significant change. And with the session currently in overtime, he’s not going to want to look as if he’s caving to Madigan, as so many of his predecessors did. The Dem-

VIEWS Rich Miller ocrats must keep moving toward the governor’s position, or this thing ain’t ever gonna end.

Republicans: Madigan hasn’t moved an inch all spring. We’ve retreated on dozens of issues, so why won’t he give up a single priority?

He has. If you look at his floor actions as a negotiating process, Madigan has eliminated several of Rauner’s proposals from consideration by defeating them during floor votes. He did the very same thing to his millionaires’ tax proposal. The Republicans interpreted the floor vote as an insult to the wealthy governor. Well, yeah, but its defeat also effectively took the issue off the table. Ignore the show business and look for progress.

Democrats: Why did the Republicans go nuclear on Democrats in committee last week by claiming we were conducting a “sexist smear campaign” against one of

their appointees who is drawing her $250,000 salary from a mostly unrelated state agency? We’ve held plenty of similar hearings about Democratic governors. It’s part of our budgetary oversight process.

Y’all were preparing to zing the governor with an over-the-top claim he was stealing money from poor people in the Department of Human Services budget and giving it to his education czar. Other governors may have humbly prostrated themselves before you, but Rauner is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Yeah, the administration’s response was hugely over the top. But that’s the way they roll. Have you forgotten the 2014 campaign already? These folks are stone cold killers. And they ain’t changing. Plus, it’s just show business. Don’t take it personally.

Republicans: Madigan negotiated privately and in good faith on the Fiscal 2015 budget problem without all these silly floor votes and side shows. Why won’t he just sit down with us now and hash out the new budget and the governor’s Turnaround Agenda?

There was some initial anger over the “Good Friday Massacre,” when the governor unilaterally cut programs that Madigan had inserted, including autism assistance funding.

But Madigan got over that because he unilaterally had put that money into the appropriations bill, so he figured he should’ve cleared it with Rauner. The tide changed in April. Why? Well, one reason is that’s when local governments around the state began voting on the governor’s draft resolution in support of Rauner’s anti-union agenda. That freaked out labor to no end.

Eventually, I think, Madigan decided Rauner was more interested in campaigning than governing and sided with his fired-up base.

Plus, Madigan is, um – odd.

He ain’t changing, either. You gotta figure him out if you really want a deal. If you don’t want a deal, fine. Otherwise, start learning.

Providence gets wild win over O’Fallon

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent NORMAL – After claiming one of the most improbable ways to win a game, Providence’s baseball team will get to defend its 2014 state title this weekend, after capturing a 4-3 victory over O’Fallon in Monday’s Class 4A University of Illinois Supersectional at Corn Crib Stadium.

The Celtics (29-11), who play Oak Park and River Forest at 5 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, continue to find ways to win in some of the most bizarre ways, and their latest victory was no exception.

In the top of the seventh with the score tied at 3, Providence’s Jackson Dvorak and Tom Kelley were hit by pitches by Panther reliever Kyle VanBeveren. O’Fallon then brought starter Chris Holba back in.

Holba was taken out in the sixth after throwing 75 pitches.

On his first pitch back, he hit Matt Diehl to load the bases.

With Mike Madej at the plate, Holba’s first pitch hit Madej in the foot, and the Celtics took a 4-3 lead.

Justin Hunniford retired the Panthers in order to secure the state bid.

“I have never in my life seen anything like that, four hit by pitches in a row,” Celtic coach Mark Smith said.

“The home plate umpire also said the same thing after the game.”

In the sixth, Celtic Jackson Stulas led off with a walk and scored on a double down the right field line by Matt Waznis.

“I was just going to the plate in the sixth to get on anyway I could,” Stulas said. “When we get the leadoff man on, things have been going well. No one is nervous on this team, I can’t tell you why or give you an explanation on these last two season. We just believe in each other.”

After Jimmy Jeffries advanced Waznis to third on a groundout, Zach Pych hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give Providence a 3-2 lead.

Providence opened the scoring in the top of the third with two outs as Diehl singled and scored on Madej’s opposite field triple.

The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on three consecutive hits and a sacrifice fly to go up, 2-1.

Carlsen got out of two jams early. He gave up three runs and only four hits in his 51⁄3 innings of work. He added four strikeouts and only walked Providence Catholic shortstop Jackson Stulas tags out O’Fallon’s Cam- one.

The Griffins took a 2-1 lead into the second inning when the game was halted for an hour and 20 minutes because of storms. After the field was pelted with rain, the ISU grounds crew worked hard to get the field ready again.

nep said. “We were all so excited and ready to go. We knew that we had to hit because of last year’s game, we knew that it would be a good game. We were just all pumped for it. When we had the delay, we just went back on the bus and did some dancing and singing, which is how our team stays relaxed and calm.”

The approach seemed to work, and East pounded out

15 hits and scored 12 runs over the next three innings.

“We like to stay loose with our radio, and we play a lot of music, and we like to dance,” Prieto said. “We came ready to play, since we knew that they were out for blood after getting so close last year. We knew that they only had two seniors who graduated, so we worked hard all season for it.

Plainfield North and Mount Carmel waited, and waited, to begin their game Monday night in the Class 4A Crestwood Supersectional at Standard Bank Stadium. They continue to wait. The game finally was postponed until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Morgan Park versus Illiana Christian supersectional in Class 3A, scheduled for a 5 p.m. start, began at 6:19

because of rain. Then at 7:54, with Illiana batting in the top of the sixth inning and trailing, 5-2, the home plate umpire spotted lightning in the distance. That meant an automatic 30-minute delay.

Play was about ready to resume at 8:24 p.m., but a few minutes before that, heavy rain and a significant storm rolled through Crestwood.

The Class 3A game did not resume until well after 9, and the postponement of the Plainfield North versus Mount Carmel game – which had been scheduled to begin at 7:30 – was announced at that point.

Plainfield North’s team bus arrived at Standard Bank Stadium with the Class 3A

game in the top of the second inning. The Tigers (30-7) know they were facing a tall order against Mount Carmel (34-4), which won the rugged Chicago Catholic Blue with a 15-1 record.

However, as North coach John Darlington noted, “Everybody’s good at this time.”

Darlington’s team won the Southwest Prairie Conference title with a 17-4 record, and all four losses came in Game 3 of the league’s weekly threegame series.

“We struggled with the third starter, but our first two were good,” he said, citing left-hander Kyle Strepek (9-0), who will start against Mount Carmel, and right-hander

Matt Vanek.

The two seniors have been outstanding in the playoffs.

That includes Strepek pitching into the eighth inning of last Thursday’s 3-2 sectional semifinal win over Naperville Central and Vanek beating a strong Downers Grove South team, 3-1, in the sectional final Saturday.

“Our senior pitchers have really thrown well,” Darlington said. “They’ve thrown strikes and battled. Kyle could have folded against Naperville Central, and we gave one run but not two or three, which we could have, against Downers South. They are really a good team.

“And, any time you are fac-

ing teams of that caliber, you need to get two-out hits, and we have gotten some of those.”

Darlington said he “always felt we were going to be good, but for a lot of the year, we were up and down.

But even though we lost four third games in our conference series, we won five of the last six [SPC] games when we had to do that to win the title outright.”

Regardless of the outcome Tuesday, Darlington was joking with his assistants that he came away with one victory Monday, anyway. He won the coin flip for home team, and he won it by calling heads.

“None of this ‘tails never fails’ stuff,” he laughed.

NORMAL – After edging Edwardsville in an extra-inning thriller in last year’s Class 4A Illinois State University Supersectional, Lincoln-Way East’s softball team figured to be in for another nailbiter when the two teams met Monday in a rematch in the same contest.

But the only drama this time around was whether the Griffins would wrap things up early. They used an eight-run third to break open a rain-delayed game and won, 14-1, in five innings.

With the victory, coach Elizabeth Pawlicki’s team improved to 29-4 as it advanced to Friday’s 3 p.m. state semifinal against Barrington at EastSide Centre in East Peoria. The Griffins, who took fourth place last year, are assured of winning trophies in consecutive years for the first time.

“We like to dance, since that helps keep our adrenaline up,” Herlihy said. “Last year’s game was so close, so I never thought that we’d beat them, 14-1, but our team came out to play. This year, I think that we’ll do a lot better at state.”

East assured itself of a shortened game in the fourth when it collected four runs and four hits, with Van Geertry’s three-run blast ending the scoring.

“It was very exciting and a lot of fun,” Ill said. “We were on fire and were doing good with our bats. We stayed pumped up throughout the whole rain delay and never got down. We’re very confident going into this weekend.”

Lightning beat Hawks to take Cup series lead

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Victor Hedman had two assists for Tampa Bay while playing stout defense on the Blackhawks’ top forwards Monday night, and the Lightning beat the Hawks, 3-2, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Ryan Callahan, Ondrej Palat and Cedric Paquette scored as Tampa Bay used its second straight win to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Ben Bishop made 36 saves in a gutsy performance after he was questionable coming into the game. Game 4 is Wednesday night.

Brad Richards and Brandon Saad scored for the Hawks, and Corey Crawford finished with 29 stops.

The third consecutive onegoal game in the final was tied at 1 after two periods, and then tied again after the teams exchanged goals in a 13-second burst in the third. But Hedman helped the Lightning take the lead for good when he skated into the corner and made a perfect pass to Paquette in the middle for his third goal of the playoffs with 3:11 remaining, silencing the crowd.

Bishop and company held up down the stretch as the Lightning improved to 8-3 on the road in the playoffs.

Tampa Bay wasted a chance to go in front in the second after Saad was whistled for goaltender’s interference, creating a 5-on-3 opportunity.

Bishop, who was a game-time decision with some sort of issue left over from Game 2, was shaken up on the collision, but stayed in the net. Crawford then made a couple of big saves to help the Hawks kill off the power-play time, leading to roars of approval from the crowd of 22,336.

Marian Hossa made a slick pass to set up Saad’s seventh goal at 4:14 of the third, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead. But the Lightning came right down and scored when Palat stuffed in a rebound for his eighth of the playoffs.

After nearly two days’ worth of speculation, Bishop led the Lightning out of the tunnel for warmups and got

The 6-foot-7 Bishop left two different times during the third period of Tampa Bay’s 4-3 victory in Game 2 on Sat-

urday night. The team has not provided a reason for his twin departures, but he appeared to be dealing with some sort of groin or leg injury as he struggled to get up and down for much of the night.

The Lightning got the first goal for the fourth straight time when Hedman made a terrific stretch pass to an open Callahan for a big drive over Crawford’s left shoulder at 5:09 of the first. Hedman has four assists in the series while hounding the Hawks’ talented group of scorers, establishing himself as an elite defenseman on the NHL’s biggest stage.

The Hawks dominated the rest of the period. Hossa wasted a prime opportunity when his shot on an open net was wide left as he tumbled to the ice. Teuvo Teravainen also shot it wide on a good look while Bishop struggled to move around the goal.

Tampa Bay defenseman Braydon Coburn was sent off for hooking with 7:18 left, and the Blackhawks capitalized on

their first power-play opportunity. With Andrew Shaw lurking in front of the goal, Richards’ big slap shot went off the top of Bishop’s glove and into the net for his third goal of the playoffs.

NOTES: Hawks D Johnny Oduya missed the last part of the second, but returned for the start of the third. ... Hawks F Bryan Bickell and rookie D Trevor van Riemsdyk each made their first appearance of the series. Bickell had been sidelined by vertigo, while van Riemdsyk was coming back from surgeries on his left knee and right wrist. It was the first NHL game for van Riemsdyk since Nov. 16. F Kris Versteeg and D David Rundblad were inactive. ... Nikita Nesterov returned to Tampa Bay’s lineup, giving the Lightning seven active defensemen. Rookie winger Jonathan Drouin was scratched. ... By BRIAN MAHONEY The Associated Press OAKLAND, Calif. – LeBron James is headed back home to Ohio. And if that seemed like a big deal last July, he can’t wait to hear how it sounds in June.

Shortly after helping Cleveland pull out a 95-93 overtime victory Sunday night over Golden State in Game 2 of the NBA Finals with 39 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists, James challenged the fans in Cleveland to be as noisy as the ones at Oracle Arena.

“I’ve heard our fans pretty loud before,” he said. “A couple instances my first postseason appearance was really loud, and me coming home against the Knicks at the start of the season was pretty good. But I know we can be much, much louder than any fan base in this league. I know they’re getting ready, and I can’t wait to see them.”

That comes Tuesday in Game 3, with the series tied at one game apiece. The only thing certain so far is that 48 minutes may not be enough. The first two games both went to overtime, the first time that’s happened in the NBA Finals.

Some things to watch as the series shifts to Quicken Loans Arena: LEBRON’S LEGS: James played 50 minutes in Game 2 on the heels of 46 minutes in Game 1. He said he was feeling the effects after Game 2 but that he and his trainer would work on treatments throughout the off day.

“We already have started on my rehab. Already started on my

session,” he said. “I will get rehab on the plane. We’ve got a five-hour flight back home, and we’ve got allaround-the-clock treatment tomorrow and get ready for Game 3. I’ll be ready.”

CURRY’S CONFIDENCE: Stephen Curry shot only 5 for 23 in Game 2, going 2 of 15 from 3-point range.

The NBA’s MVP said the Warriors haven’t been in a good rhythm but still believed they would win the series.

That might depend on his performance.

“I don’t expect to shoot like this,” he said. “I’ve got to play better, find better shots and be more in a rhythm throughout the course of the game for us to really assert ourselves as a team.”

SLOW AND STEADY: Neither team shot 40 percent in Game 2, and the only reason both reached 100 points in Game 1 was because they went to overtime. Not surprising, since both have been among the top defensive teams in the playoffs.

“This is what we expected,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said.

“Great defensive teams. Both teams I thought defended like crazy out there. It was a grind-out, kind of old-school game. That’s the style that it’s going to be when you get this deep in the playoffs. It’s rarely a track meet.”

DELLY’S D: Curry struggled against the tough defense of Matthew Dellavedova, who moved into the starting lineup after Kyrie Irving fractured his left kneecap.

Curry missed all eight shots when defended in the halfcourt by Dellavedova, according to ESPN.

Schuler posts second straight late-model stock car victory SUBMITTED REPORT

MORRIS – Larry Schuler won his second straight late-model feature to highlight the weekly stock car racing program Friday night at Grundy County Speedway.

David Einhaus finished second, John Nutley third, Eddie Hoffman fourth, Scott Koerner fifth and Brandon Clubb sixth. Koerner lost the lead to Schuler about midway through the 30-lap race.

Hoffman set the fast time at 15.318 seconds. Tony Brutti won the first heat ahead of James Gregait and Billy Knippenberg. Koerner took the second heat, with Nutley and Schuler in the next two spots.

Kevin Gentile, the fast qualifier at 16.423, won the 25-lap Mid-American feature, followed by John Ventrello, Chuck Yuris, Joe Vinachi, Jeff Olson and Matt Clemens. Marty McKinney

won the first heat, with Cody Clubb second and Jim Kachel third. Olson, Luke Baldwin and Vinachi finished 1-2-3 in the second heat.

Seth Blommaert captured the 25-lap street-stock feature. Christy Pendrod ran second, followed by Jake Bradley, Rita Fields, Tim Stewart and Cheryl Hryn. Bradley set the fast time at 17.531.

Butch Kolbe beat Zach Sontag and Paul Polarek to the finish line in the first heat. Blommaert also won the second heat, with Fields second and Bradley third.

Dan Schmeissing won the 15-lap 4-cylinder feature. Cirk Lindemuth, Jim Gross, Alex Gay, Ricky Wilson and Will Shepherd rounded out the top six. Shepherd set the fast time of 20.035. Jeff Law won the first heat with Gay second and Dylan Marshall third. Gross took the second heat ahead of Wilson and Shepherd.

After Game 2 win, LeBron looking forward to home

JOLIET – Chicagoland Speedway announced Tuesday that 2003 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Matt Kenseth, already a virtual lock for the Chase with a win earlier this year, will be the featured guest in the Legends Club on Father’s Day weekend for the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Featuring some of the most storied figures, families and personalities in Matt the sport, the Legends Kenseth Club offers an intimate setting with an all-inclusive package of beer and wine, plus two meals a day.

The Legends Club made its debut in 2014 as Elmhurst native and NASCAR Hall of Fame member Fred Lorenzen was inducted. Dale Jarrett, Richard Childress and Brett Bodine received the honor in September.

Kenseth will be on hand to watch his son, Ross, make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut for Joe Gibbs Racing under the lights June 20 at Chicagoland Speedway. The 21-year-old will drive the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota, with the same number and sponsor as his father in the

Sprint Cup Series.

The elder Kenseth will make his appearance at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets for the June Legends Club (Saturday only) are $250. Tickets for the Xfinity Series Race at Chicagoland Speedway start at $30 for adults and $5 for kids, while Fan Zone Pit Passes are $25. A race ticket also includes entry to the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, running on the same day.

Vanderbilt tops Illini, takes super regional

By DAVID MERCER The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN – Dansby Swanson was sure you couldn’t script a better afternoon than the one he had Monday.

He’s right.

Swanson scored the goahead run in a 4-2 struggle against Illinois, eliminating the Illini and helping the defending national champion Commodores return to the College World Series.

The shortstop and his teammates celebrated with Detroit Tiger and former Commodore David Price, who used an off day to catch the game.

And, oh yeah, minutes after the win, the Arizona Diamondbacks picked Swanson first in the Major League Base-

ball draft. He was the first of three Commodores, along with pitchers Carson Fulmer, who was the White Sox’s first-round pick Monday; and Walker Buehler, picked by the Dodgers in the first round.

“Yeah, I can’t complain, that’s for sure,” Swanson said.

“Surreal moment.”

While the Commodores celebrated, Illinois (50-10-1) tried to figure out what went wrong.

“It was just tough going down like that,” said right fielder Casey Fletcher, who appeared to have been crying. “We thought we had an Obama-bound team.”

The Commodores (47-19) ground their way past Illinois’ most-talented pitcher, left-handed reliever Tyler Jay of Lemont, who was making

just his second start since high school. Jay himself was drafted a little later, at No. 6 by the Minnesota Twins.

And Vanderbilt got a gritty six-inning start from another player with a tough-to-script story, lefty Philip Pfeifer. Pfeifer missed all of the Commodores’ championship season after failing a drug test in 2013.

He struggled early Monday, giving Illinois multiple base runners in each of the first three innings. But the Illini scratched out just the two runs. And then Pfeifer found his control.

After losing 13-0 in the opener Saturday, Illinois had to wait an extra day to try to fight its way back into the series. Sunday’s scheduled game was postponed until Monday

due to bad weather.

When the Illini finally got their chance Monday, they scored early on Pfeifer, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning and then going up 2-1 in the third when Pat McInerney singled to drive home Casey Fletcher.

But Pfeifer coaxed a ground ball out from Illinois’ top hitter, David Kerian, and get out of the inning.

The matchup between Swanson and Jay was much-anticipated. Jay only came out of the bullpen because the Illini were facing elimination. Hartleb started him over No. 2 starter Drasen Johnson.

“I kind of knew what I was getting into with them,” Jay said, saying he played some of the Commodores in summer league baseball.

Short and sweet: 3 shortstops lead off draft for 1st time

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr. The Associated Press SECAUCUS, N.J. – Shortstops were a big hit leading off the Major League Baseball draft.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Vanderbilt slugger Dansby Swanson with the No. 1 pick Monday night, setting off a history-making run at the position.

With the second pick, Houston took LSU’s Alex Bregman – marking the first time the first two players chosen were shortstops since Shawon Dunston (Cubs) and Augie Schmidt (Blue Jays) got drafted in 1982. Colorado

made it 3 for 3 by taking Florida high schooler Brendan Rodgers at No. 3 overall.

A fourth shortstop went 10th, with Philadelphia selecting Georgia high schooler Cornelius Randolph.

At No. 6, Minnesota drafted Illinois closer Tyler Jay of Lemont, a lefty who could be used as a starter at the next level because of his excellent command of four pitches.

Arkansas slugging outfielder Andrew Benintendi went seventh to Boston; Vanderbilt righty Carson Fulmer was the No. 8 pick by the White Sox; and the Cubs selected Cincinnati outfielder Ian Happ ninth overall.

Swanson, who helped lead the Commodores to the College World Series earlier in the day, was the first college shortstop to be the top pick since Brown University’s Bill Almon in 1974.

“I think it sounds pretty good,” a smiling Swanson said in an interview on MLB Network.

It marked the first time the Diamondbacks had the No. 1 selection since they took Justin Upton in 2005.

Swanson seamlessly switched from second base to shortstop this season as a junior. He was the Most Outstanding Player at the College World Series last year, help-

ing the Commodores to the national championship. Swanson is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Howser Trophy, given to college baseball’s top player.

“An exceptional baseball player that has all of the intangibles and makeup of a championship-type player for which this organization is building a foundation on,” Diamondbacks scouting director Deric Ladnier said in a statement.

Swanson also is the first shortstop – college or high school – to go No. 1 since Houston took Carlos Correa out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy in 2012.

Double lung transplant gives Mokena teen a bright future Know more

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Rachel Sweet is heading full speed toward her dream of becoming an accountant, and – for once – she isn’t expecting any detours to the hospital.

Sweet, 18, of Mokena graduated June 2 with her class at Lincoln-Way West High School in New Lenox thanks to a double lung transplant she received March 15, 2014, at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

“I was always determined to graduate with my friends,” Sweet said. “Even when I was home-schooled, I got the best grades I could. Every time I got through, it made me feel proud. It gave me the extra push to keep going.”

Sweet has every right to feel proud. By the time of the transplant, Sweet’s lung function had declined dangerously. Sweet had spent half of her first three years in high school either home sick or in the hospital, mostly because of complications from cystic fibrosis.

It was a different story after the transplant. During her senior year, Sweet earned A’s and B’s and a Lincoln-Way Foundation Scholarship, according to a news release. She is full of hope for the future, which includes attending Joliet Junior College this fall and Arizona State University after that.

“I don’t know if I want to work for someone or have my own business,” Sweet said, “but I don’t want to be low on the totem pole of accounting.

I want to be up there, to be important.”

Diagnosis, early years

Sue Sweet, Rachel’s mother, said no one considered cystic fibrosis when her daughter was a baby because she didn’t have respiratory problems until later.

According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at www.cff.org, an estimated 70,000 people worldwide – and 30,000 children and adults in the United States – have this life-threatening, genetic disease.

Each year, an estimated 1,000 cases are diagnosed in the United States, with 75 percent diagnosed by age 2. Cystic fibrosis obstructs the pancreas and causes the body to produce thick, sticky, lung-clogging mucus. Rachel Sweet graduated from Lincoln-Way West High School this year after spending most of the first three six- to 12-hour surgery can exyear of high school at home because of her cystic fibrosis. In March 2014, she had a double lung transplant tend patients’ lives by 10 years.

It also eliminates the disease and was able to spend most of her senior year at school with her classmates.

Until Sweet’s diagnosis at age 4, Sweet constantly was hungry, to the point of malnutrition, her mother said.

Her feces were greasy, and she wasn’t gaining weight.

“Her pediatrician couldn’t pinpoint it, so he said, ‘Well, let’s do genetic testing,’ and cystic fibrosis turned up,” Sweet’s mother said.

Until Sweet was in fifth grade, treatment consisted of enzyme replacement therapy to aid digestion and the wearing of a mechanical vest to loosen secretions in her lungs.

That changed about the time Sweet turned 10.

A common cold could debilitate Sweet for weeks, and each one caused more scarring in her lungs, Sue Sweet said.

Even when Rachel wasn’t sick, she still had a chronic, barking cough. Hospital stays became more frequent. Rachel had 20 during her high school career,

“It made me sad that I couldn’t go out and do normal kid stuff.”

Rachel said she was too sick to play in the yard with her friends. She couldn’t walk a nature trail without stopping to catch her breath every few paces. Trick or treating was impossible. Sometimes, Rachel added, she didn’t have enough energy to even pass out candy.

“It made me sad that I couldn’t go out and do normal kid stuff,” she said.

Finally, the only solution was a double lung transplant.

So far, Rachel’s transplant is working well.

“Her lung function is nearly normal,” Lowery said.

Rachel said she was nervous about the surgery, but information from the transplant team allayed her fears.

Her mother knew the transplant was a success the minute Sweet entered the recovery room.

“It was quiet, not a sound, no coughing to be heard,” she said. “I knew this was the right choice for her.”

Today, Rachel plays friendly sports with her friends and works out at home on her trampoline. She’s confident she can finish any project she starts. But for now, she is happy to revel in simple summertime pleasures.

“I can run under the sprinkler and get wet,” she said.

HEALTH BRIEFS Hickory Creek walks to support Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

FRANKFORT – Sixththrough eighth-grade students at Hickory Creek Middle School walked May 22 to support Great Strides: Taking Steps to Cure Cystic Fibrosis.

At the school’s morning assembly, Principal Kevin Suchinski congratulated the students on their efforts and welcomed Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland, Police Chief John Burica, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation development manager Amy Kozyra, and the Walsh and Burns families.

Hickory Creek teacher David Wonder coordinated the walk.

Over the past eight years, Hickory Creek has raised more than $10,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and walked in honor of 12-year-old Colin Walsh and his team. At the assembly, the Walsh family presented Suchinski and the school with a plaque to thank them for their fundraising efforts over the years. Walsh then passed the torch to the Dean Burns family and their team.

After the assembly, District 157-C students, staff and parents walked together on the track in honor of Dean, age 5, who has cystic fibrosis. His sister, Cali, is a sixth-grader at the school.

The students collected donations for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation through their advisory classes and online at fightcf.cff.

org/goto/HCMS. The total amount raised by the students was more than $9,500 this year. Renee’ Grady’s Advisory Class won the pizza party donated

by Aurelio’s for raising the highest amount.

Chapman is Morris Hospital’s Fire Starter of Month for April

MORRIS – Judy Chapman, health information management specialist at Morris Hospital, is the hospital’s Fire Starter of the Month for April.

Chapman started her 25-year career at Morris Hospital in the business office and worked registration in the emergency department on midnights.

Judy Within two Chapman to three years, she transferred to health information management – called medical records at the time – where she focused on inpatient analysis.

As the department grew, Chapman took a lead position on afternoons and eventually switched to the lead position that she holds today on days. In this role, Chapman and a team of six others are responsible for scanning and processing patient records to make sure all charts are complete. If they detect any deficiencies, the chart goes back to the doctor for completion.

Unfortunately, at the bridge table, less experienced players have certain impulses that can be fatal – as perhaps in this deal. South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond ace.

What should happen?

North was right to overcall one spade. To double first, planning to bid spades on the next round, requires at least a very good 17 points. Then East made a pre-emptive jump to three diamonds. (With a good hand, he would have cue-bid two spades.) After two passes, North made a takeout double to show extra values and short diamonds. South, who had a much better hand than he might have held, correctly jumped to four hearts.

The first key play comes at trick one. East must signal with his diamond queen under West’s ace, to show the queen and the jack.

Then West must resist the impulse to cash his diamond king.

He can see three defensive tricks in the heart king and two diamonds.

But from where is a fourth winner coming?

At trick two, West should shift to his singleton king. Declarer will win with dummy’s ace, lead a heart to his ace (he knows West has the king from his opening bid), and play another heart. But West wins with his king and leads a low diamond. East takes the trick with his jack and returns a spade, which West ruffs to defeat the contract.

Trust your instincts, but also stop to analyze the deal.

In the next year, LDL fell 61 percent more in the PCSK9 inhibitor group than in the standard treatment group.

About 2 percent of the standard-treatment-only group died or had a heart attack, stroke or related event during the study. The rate was 1 percent in the group taking the new drug.

The other study included 2,341 people. They were randomly assigned to receive PCSK9 inhibitor injections or placebo (fake) injections. These were given every two weeks for 78 weeks. The results were similar to those seen in the larger study.

As promising as these drugs appear, PCSK9 inhibitors are still experimental and not available to the general public. In particular, we don’t yet have much information on whether there would be adverse effects from long-term use of these medicines. They may be a new “wonder drug,” as statins have been for most people, but it’s too early to say.

However, there are proven alternatives to the statin drugs that you should discuss with your doctor.

They are not quite as potent as statins in lowering LDL cholesterol, but they can be sufficient for many people. These include bile acid binders, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, fibrates and niacin. (I’ve put a table listing specific drugs within these categories, along with their benefits and side effects, on my website, AskDoctorK. com.) I’m optimistic that you’ll be able to get your LDL cholesterol down to a safe level with one of these alternatives.

Dear Doctor K: I have high cholesterol, but I can’t tolerate statins. Are there any new treatments for lowering cholesterol?

Dear Reader: I assume you’re taking statins because your low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (so-called “bad” cholesterol) is high. If so, that does increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Lowering LDL cholesterol reduces that risk. Some people can bring down their cholesterol levels with diet and exercise alone. But many people need medication to get to their target levels.

Statins are the drugs most often prescribed to lower cholesterol. They have proven to decrease the risk of heart attack, stroke and death in people at high risk. But some people can’t take a statin because of side effects such as muscle pain or liver damage.

There is a powerful new category of cholesterol-lowering drugs that may be a promising alternative. The new drugs, which are still in clinical trials, are called PCSK9 inhibitors. These inhibitors target and shut down a specific protein in the liver, a protein that makes LDL cholesterol.

Knocking out this protein dramatically reduces the amount of LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Lowering the level in the blood, in turn, reduces the amount of cholesterol that gets deposited in the walls of your arteries.

The New England Journal of Medicine recently published results of studies on two different PCSK9 inhibitors. The larger study included 4,465 people. They were randomly divided into two groups.

One group got injections of the PCSK9 inhibitor every two or four weeks.

(For now, PCSK9 inhibitors must be given by injection.)

People in this group also got standard treatment -- usually a statin -- to lower LDL. The other group got standard treatment only.

Dear Abby: May I comment on the letter from “Open-Minded in Pennsylvania” (3/6), the adoptive mother of a biracial child who asked for a witty comeback for strangers’ comments/questions? This is a rare teaching moment!

If a parent reacts with the slightest hint of displeasure, the child will think the parent is displeased with her/him.

We adopted a daughter of a different race 29 years ago. When I received comments/questions from acquaintances and strangers, my face would light up, and I’d respond, “Oh, we adopted her! She is Filipino! We are so blessed to have her in our lives!” Usually, the person would smile and say something positive. The rare times someone didn’t, we would hurry on with a wave and a smile, and I would hug her close.

Our daughter has grown up proud of her ethnic background and knowing she’s special.
