Arts org finds a partner with St. Joseph Academy

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A financially strapped arts organization and a school looking for a home turned into a match made in heaven.

St. Joseph Academy is moving in with the Friends for Community Public Art on 310 N. Ottawa St., Joliet, and will be ready to start classes in the fall at the new location.

“This was perfect,” said Jan Novotny, the head of school for the academy.

The FCPA has been looking for a buyer for its building since April while continuing to display scale-models of public art all around Joliet.

While FCPA was hit hard by the recession and has continued to downsize, St. Joseph Academy was asked to move out of its previous location, 51 W. Jackson St., because the owner is selling the property.

The academy is a 4-yearold school that replaced the old St. Joseph Church school that was shut down by the diocese. It was organized to keep a Catholic influence on the east side of Joliet. The academy will be occupying most of the 8,000-square-foot building in a rent-to-own deal with the FCPA for $299,900, less than the building’s listed price of $325,000.

The FCPA will retain 750 square feet, including a lab and two administrative offices, and start renting that space from the academy once ownership changes next year.

Parachutist survives despite chute failure BOLINGBROOK – A parachutist survived unharmed Sunday when his chute failed to open.

Police Lt. Mike Rompa said the flight was part of the “Cavalcade of Planes” being held at Clow Airport.

The jumper landed around 2:45 p.m. in the 200 block of Buli Lane, Bolingbrook, according to reports.

“His chute did not open properly but he is fine and signed a release [waiving] medical attention,” Rompa said.

“We panicked a bit,” Novotny said when the academy was told it couldn’t continue the month-to-month lease on the old location. “But [academy board member Rich Hlavacik] drove by the FCPA building and saw the ‘For Sale’ sign, and we began talking with them from there.”

It was a great deal for the academy, Novotny said, because the FCPA building had large rooms well-suited for the academy’s Montessori-style teaching methods and the academy wouldn’t have to put resources into modifying the building.

“We’ll also have the benefit of local artists having their work displayed for the children to see,” Novotny said. “It’s a luxury that most schools don’t

have.”

Novotny said she knew FCPA administrator and artist Kathleen Farrell and sculptor Marsha Lega from grade school, so the pairing of the two private organizations seemed like a perfect match.

Farrell said FCPA bought the building in a similar rentto-own process for $200,000 in 2002. Since then, the organization invested an additional $225,000 in renovations and improvements.

The organization couldn’t afford to make the $13,000 monthly payments on the building, Farrell said, especially after the economic collapse and the stoppage of funds for the No Child Left Behind program in March.

“This was a perfect marriage,” Farrell said. “We didn’t want FCPA to disappear into the ether space, so we needed to find someone to buy the building. [The academy] is the perfect fit.”

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Upon immigrating in the early 1900s from Austria to the United States, John Pirc was lucky enough to find work through Joliet Iron and Steel.

In doing so, he became one of the thousands of first-generation immigrants from southern or eastern Europe who earned a living through Joliet’s booming steel industry – a bygone era seen today in the form of rock piles, twisted metal and concrete foundations.

The Joliet steel mill site, which eventually became the second largest in the U.S., served as a focal point of the city’s working class beginning in the 1870s until operations at that particular site ceased during the Great Depression. A second steel mill opened later just east of the railroad tracks.

While the smog and noise once found within the industrial yard back in its heydays are no longer, Joliet’s rich history as the “City of Steel and Stone” is preserved within the foundation of ruined buildings, thanks to efforts made in the 1990s by the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

Situated on Columbia Street just east of Scott Street and Ruby Street Bridge lies the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site, developed in the 1990s by the county’s forest preserve district.

The historic site pays tribute to Joliet’s steel industry and the roughly 2,000 individuals who worked around the clock to produce barbed wire and railroad spikes, among other things, to be shipped throughout the country.

at the original steel mill site, she was allowed to come along, she said.

Her family has a copper coin from U.S. Steel that commemorates 25 years of service for one of the Pirc men. Lois Pirc said her father-in-law, Anthony, gave it to her husband decades ago. She thinks the coin is for John Pirc, her husband’s grandfather, who worked in the industry the longest, she said.

Lois Pirc fondly remembers the Pirc men, who were all about their work, she said.

“That’s all they talked about at the dinner table,” she said.

All of them worked through harsh conditions, said Lois Pirc, 76, of Plainfield, and widow to the late Raymond Pirc.

Her husband and husband’s father both worked in the nail department, she said.

“It was a dirty job. It was such a dirty, hard job,” said Pirc, who toured the steel mill site over the Memorial Day weekend – when reservations tend to fill up quickly.

By JAN LARSEN Shaw Media Correspondent More than 1,000 girls gathered to play lacrosse Sunday very near where French voyageurs once met up with Native Americans wishing to trade animal pelts.

This particular rendezvous was hosted by the Illinois Girls Lacrosse Association at Hassert Park in Crest Hill for the fourth year in a row.

Lacrosse is French for “the stick” and Native Americans like the Iroquois were the first known players of this game, albeit a few 100 years ago when the fields were much, much larger, the games were much, much longer and the losers also lost their lives.

Nothing like that happened on Sunday when 115 teams of girls in grades first through ninth gathered to play at the IGLA spring youth fest. The IGLA was

founded in 2006 by Bridget Olp, which tells you how new it is to the Chicago area.

Almost all the teams were from Chicago, although a few girls from Will County played.

This is the second year of lacrosse for Jami Herman of Lockport, age 9. Her dad, Dave, is recreation director of Lockport Township Park District. One reason she wants to play is that her 14-year-old brother, Jake, plays. He was at a competition elsewhere Sunday with their mom.

“Jake learned about the game from a friend and from ESPN,” said Dave. “They play more up north, but it’s starting to move into this area. We do offer it at our park district.”

Truly her father’s child, Jami also plays golf, tennis, baseball and volleyball. She played soccer one season but didn’t like it, but she loves lacrosse.

Her brother coaches her in their backyard where the family has set up both a net and rebounder. The men’s game is more physical. For young girls, there is a 25-minute game but high-schoolers play two 25-minute halves.

Jami plays the attack position. “I got 11 goals in four games today,” she exulted.

More players score more goals than in soccer, said Michelle Sebastian of Downers Grove, and that’s something that attracted her to the game when she discovered it in college. She ended up earning a scholarship her senior year at Vanderbilt University as a midfield runner.

Joliet park board holds hearing on potential tax increase THE HERALD–NEWS news@theherald-news.com JOLIET – The Joliet Park District Board has scheduled special sessions for Tuesday and Thursday to see how receptive residents are about increasing taxes to pay for park improvements.

Key projects in the pro-

posal include replacing trees throughout the district that have been devastated by the emerald ash borer, improving roads and security at Pilcher Park, and renovating 25 playgrounds.

The district’s full wish list – which includes additional items such as a recreation center at Nowell Park and a

second sheet of ice and training facility at Presence Inwood Athletic Center – would cost about $20.9 million, said Dominic Egizio, the district’s executive director.

The district recently mailed an informational packet on the issue to all active voter households. Included in the packet is mail-in survey with

a return envelope.

Results of the survey will help the district determine how much funding to seek on a bond referendum in a future election, possibly Nov. 4, Egizio said.

Exterior completed on JJC building

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Exterior work on Joliet Junior College’s $58 million city center building has been completed.

The project, initially expected to be finished in January, was pushed back by snow and frigid weather conditions.

“I think a lot of it was recovery from the brutal winter that carried into the spring,” said Neil Wisker, project manager for Mortenson Construction of Chicago. “It pushed us back a couple months.”

Mortenson announced Thursday it had completed the exterior work on the six-story structure. The 96,000-squarefoot building at Chicago and Clinton streets is adjacent to the Renaissance Center, 214 N. Ottawa St. Connecting the two buildings, as well as working in a tight urban landscape, was a challenge, Wisker said.

But first, Frankfort village officials plan to hold a public hearing on granting Frankfort Mixed Martial Arts a special-use permit to occupy the space available at 21800 S. LaGrange Road, Unit A. On Thursday, the village plan commission and zoning board of appeals is set to consider a public hearing request.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the lower level of the Frankfort Police Station on 20602 Lincoln Way Lane.

“I expect it go smoothly,” said Zach Brown, the village’s assistant director of development services, about Thursday’s meeting. “They’re an existing established business that runs a good operation.”

He said a public hearing is needed when any indoor rec-

The new location would also offer customers a larger parking lot. According to its website, Frankfort Mixed Martial Arts offers programs for children between the ages of 3 and 12, adults and a “ladies only” fitness boot camp.

The new building will house the adult education and literacy department, workforce development, the college’s renowned culinary arts program and a large cafeteria on the first floor, with another large dining and public area also planned for the second floor.

The building is composed of 1,100 tons of structural steel, according to Mortenson officials.

It contains 3,000 cubic yards of concrete for the foundation and floors, requiring 350 full concrete trucks. The structure is built to LEED Silver energy-efficiency standards. About two-thirds of the building is covered in an exterior insulation and finish system.

About 15 percent is oko, a glass fiber-reinforced concrete made of recycled fabricated materials from Sweden. The oko horizontal panels contain gaps that serve as rain screens.

As a counterbalance, about 5 percent of the building is made of insulated metal panels that add contrast.

Windows round out the rest of the exterior, including a sweeping two-story curtain wall at the main entrance at the corner of Chicago and Webster streets that provides a panoramic view of downtown Joliet. More than 70 percent of the work on the exterior construction and installation

of heating, cooling and ventilation units was contracted to local businesses, according to Mortenson. The second phase of the project, to complete the interior of the building, won’t begin until next year.

JJC still is waiting for the state to provide its $25.5 million share of the funding, though the Illinois Community College Board, to finish the project. City Center has been on the ICCB’s project funding list for more than a decade, and is the No. 1 project on the list.

However, state legislators still have to appropriate capital funds for the project.

The college plans to wait for funding until the state Legislature finishes its lame duck session next January, Rohder said. If funding isn’t made available by then, the college will use its own internal funding to complete the project, she said.

“One way or another, it will be built,” Rohder said. “It just depends on what pot of money we use.”

The forest preserve district won a bikeway grant in the late 1990s, which provided nearly all of the $2 million needed for the site’s redevelopment, he said. The grand opening was in 1998.

The site is designed for self-guided tours, he said, with interpretative stations along the 1.5-mile paved pathway explaining the importance behind the ruins.

The men behind the steel industry are also emphasized, he said. At its height in 1900, the site had more than 2,000 employees and boasted a payroll of $2.1 million.

Adult crows and blue jays have long been testing priorities, but the Illinois Department of Public Health will accept multiple bird species for laboratory analysis. Other birds suitable for testing include robins, finches, grackles, sparrows, wrens, swallows and cardinals. In Will County, there have been 66 cases of West Nile virus and two fatalities since 2002. Illinois has reported 2,091 cases and 131 fatalities in that same period.

In 2013, more than 2,370 human cases of West Nile Virus were reported in 29 states.

West Nile prevention tips The best way to prevent West Nile disease is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and to take personal precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Precautions include: • Whenever outdoors between dusk and dawn, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a longsleeved shirt. Loose fitting, light colored clothing is best. Consider staying indoors during this time as it is peak mosquito biting time.

• Apply insect repellent to exposed skin when outdoors. The most effective repellents contain DEET. Use caution when applying repellent to children.

• Install tight-fitting window and door screens. Check for, and repair, any tears in residential screens, including porches and patios. Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night.

JOLIET – The city has declared war on Culex pipiens.

The tiny menace with the hobbit-like name is a sub-species of the common mosquito, a particularly nasty variety known to be a carrier of the West Nile Virus. The Joliet City Council on Tuesday awarded a $32,400 mosquito abatement contract to Clarke Environmental Mosquito Management, Inc. The company will treat approximately 6,750 manholes, inlets and catch basins across the city to eradicate mosquito species. The organic certified extended-release treatment is distributed through tablets dropped into areas where standing water creates mosquito-breeding areas, Jim Trizna, the city’s director of public works, told the council. The tablet is effective up to 180 days.

In the past, the city used sprayer trucks to administer the mosquito-killing brew.

“We haven’t done it that way for three years or so,” Trizna said. “We found that mosquitoes carrying West Nile tend to breed in these catch basins and inlets, so that’s what we concentrate on.”

The tablets are less intrusive, Trizna said. Some residents were concerned that the mosquito foggers could cause respiratory problems, he said.

The city’s efforts focus on public areas, so residents are encouraged to remove areas of standing water from their property.

West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Most people infected with the West Nile Virus have no symptoms or experience very mild symptoms three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. Mild symptoms include a fever, headache, and body aches and swollen lymph glands. Occasionally a skin rash will occur on the trunk of the body. Fewer than 1 percent of those infected will develop severe symptoms, which include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, con-

vulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis. Those 50 and older and immunocompromised individuals, such as transplant patients, have the highest risk of severe disease.

The city works in conjunction with the Will County Health Department to evaluate and determine when the West Nile virus is present.

County residents can help minimize the potential for West Nile virus by reporting dead birds to the Will County’s WNV Information Line. The 24-hour service is accessible at 815-740-7631.

Minooka receives multiple donations The village of Minooka was recently the recipient of several gracious donations from local sources.

Minooka Junior High student council presented police officer Matt Juras and his canine partner, Ruger, with a check for $500 from Minooka Grade School District 201. The money will help to pay for Ruger’s care.

Chicago Crime Scene Cleanup, a company that specializes in crime scene clean up, also donated $200 for Ruger’s care.

Ruger recently completed his six weeks of training in Springfield with Juras and was sworn in at the end of April. He is the village and Grundy County’s first drug detection dog.

At the same meeting, Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club member Tina Zugel announced the organization is donating a bench for Summit Park to commemorate the club’s 10th anniversary.

In addition to worldwide programs to eradicate polio and provide fresh drinking water in poor countries, Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club organizes community programs and activities such as scholarships for high school seniors, the backpack program which provides after-school and weekend snacks for children in need from Channahon and Minooka schools and helps by sponsoring special needs day at Three Rivers Festival.

A fourth donation to the community was a $5,000 check from the Grainger Foundation for Minooka’s Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association.

Bike Rodeo winners Minooka’s annual bike rodeo was in May and the winners of the event were recently announced. The rodeo is a combined effort between Minooka Police and Minooka Fire Protection District, which encourages children to be safe while riding their bikes.

Kids go through a series of obstacles with their bicycles as well as learn about bike safety, said Community Policing Officer Denis Tatgenhorst.

“It’s very beneficial and a great thing to see young ones learning about bike safety,” Tatgenhorst said. “It’s very important.”

Before the accident, Michael, standing several inches over 6 feet and weighing more than 200 pounds, was known to his loved ones as a “gentle giant” and “angel baby” to his mother (also named Nancy McGurk), someone who brought home stray cats and nurtured goals of becoming a police officer or firefighter.

Michael always loved sports and played baseball and basketball, Nancy said, but their mother absolutely forbid Michael, the youngest of her nine children, to play football.

“She was afraid he’d get hurt,” Nancy said.

NEW LENOX – It was as if a Mack truck had hit Michael McGurk.

That was the surgeon’s comment, said Nancy McGurk of New Lenox, one of Michael’s sisters, when Michael’s main artery tore, the last straw in a series of injuries while playing football for Lincoln-Way High School in New Lenox.

“There wasn’t the awareness of head injuries there is now,” Nancy said.

Michael spent half a year in a reduced coma, said Trisha McGurk of Joliet, another sister, and emerged as a spastic quadriplegic. He could no longer walk or talk.

He could eat only pureed foods; he was oxygen dependent.

However, those details were not important to Michael, Trisha added, for her brother was a happy man, all the way up to his death from congestive heart failure April 24 at the age of 40.

What mattered to Michael was family. Trisha said when she approached him, Michael would be so happy, his chair would rock.

“For years, he did thumbs up for ‘yes’ and thumbs down for ‘no’ until we could read his lips,” Trisha said. “We knew when Michael was in pain, when he was happy and when he was mad. It wasn’t a case of suffering. That wasn’t it at all. It was just an

One day, during his senior year, Michael became dizzy on the field and collapsed. He spent a year in hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Insurance would not cover home health care, Nancy said, only a nursing home, which was out of the question for Michael’s mother.

So the family rolled up their sleeves and learned to care for Michael. In addition to tending to his many physical needs, they played his favorite music: Cheap Trick and Led Zeppelin. They kept the TV turned to music programs. They drove him to the movies.

In return, Michael taught and inspired them, fulfilling his dream of living a life of service to others.

“He wanted people to know that faith and hope go a long way,” Trisha said, “and that a belief system and strength and being lucky enough to have people care for you could help you do anything ... we had this encouragement from someone not able to speak. He was the best spiritual teacher we ever had. We would not be the people we are today without his influence in our lives.”

“I just can’t go to their home that they bought last year and expect them to be there ...,” Harrington said.

“The ones that stay gone the longest don’t have a lot of stuff where I can track them: They just renewed their driver’s license, or they just applied for a credit card, or they got utilities in their name.

It’s not impossible to come off the grid.”

Most who bolted didn’t break out as much as walked away. They were in transition centers, which prepare inmates for post-prison life “with limited and carefully planned opportunities,” Shaer said. According to Corrections figures, 17,638 inmates were released from ATCs in the past decade, with only a few ditching.

13-year-old computer whiz has big plans

By GEORGE LeCLAIRE The Daily Herald LIBERTYVILLE – Andy Merrill is a huge pi fan.

The 13-year-old from Libertyville wore a pi shirt every day during Pi Month, March 2014, aka 3.14.

He can recite the digits of pi – the mathematical constant that states the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter – so fast it will make your hard drive spin. He teaches adults and friends how to use a Raspberry Pi, a credit-card sized computer he said is the best computer for kids to experiment with.

Andy’s appreciation for pi pairs with his love for computer programming and coding. He has mastered several coding languages – Python, HTML, JavaScript, Ruby, Alice and Scratch – but said he’s just scratching the surface.

“Compared to everything that’s out there I technically know nothing,” he said.

A self-taught computer and technology whiz, Andy is a member of Curiosity Hacked Guild of Glenview. Unlike the shady characters breaking into the systems of banks, corporations and government agencies that most people imagine when they think of hackers, the guild is a national nonprofit organization that focuses on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) education, skill building and community engagement.

When Andy opens his laptop during the group’s weekly meetings, both kids and adults gather around him as he explains the coding he is doing.

He recently took his laptop completely apart the reassembled it.

“It’s major problem solving, but I got it back together, be-

sides the speakers, in just two nights,” he said.

Andy also attends the “Teen Tinkers and Minecraft” program meetings at Cook Park Library in Libertyville.

“Tinkers is a place I can hang out with friends that know the same things I do,” he said.

During the club’s first meeting, Andy taught librarians Ellen Jennings and Rob Eckmann how a Raspberry Pi works.

“He made it work and was able to communicate it to us clearly,” Eckmann said. “Andy is a young engineer – he has a future.”

His mother, Jenny, who home-schools Andy, said her son “sees in 3-D,” which is fitting, given his long-term plans.

Andy, who vows to never drive a gas-powered car, plans to start his own company to design inventions, including a giant 3-D printer to create a house for his family.

Six, including Elbay and Hebron, are “considered armed and dangerous,” a label slapped on anyone with a physical altercation in his past, even a dismissed battery charge, Shaer said. But most who took flight were imprisoned for non-violent, if serious, crimes: pushing drugs, burglary, selling a stolen vehicle. Walter McCottrell, 66, was finishing a 10-year stint for rape, armed robbery and

burglary when he took off in October 1976. A year later, he began a life sentence at San Quentin State Prison, California prison spokesman Luis Patino confirmed, for multiple counts of kidnapping, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and more.

Harrington, whose caseload also includes those who absconded from parole – there are approximately 900, according to the data AP analyzed – tries to gain the trust of family and friends, convincing them that the fugitive is unable to move on with his life as long he remains on the street. Suspected patterns develop, including where they go and who they’re with.

It’s still possible to flee the country with a new identity, said Dennis Sew, vice president of the Professional Bail Agents of the United States, an organization of bounty hunters.

“But that’s usually not the human behavior ...,” Sew said. “Unless you don’t care about anything in the whole world except for yourself, eventually you’re going to contact somebody, and that’s when you get caught.”

STATE BRIEFS Rare black bear sighting Dr. Seuss art gallery occurs in northern Illinois to open in Chicago ROCKFORD – There has been a rare black bear sighting in Illinois.

Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home near Rockford Saturday morning where a resident spotted a bear eating berries outside. The Beloit Daily News reports the startled bear then ran east into a wooded area. The Rockford Register Star reported a phone alert was issued for area residents. A male black bear can weigh up to 350 pounds.

Early Sunday morning, Roscoe police spotted a bear, too.

And the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said they’ve had sightings in Freeport and Stockton in recent days.

The University of Illinois Extension said black bears were once widely hunted but eliminated in the state by 1870.

CHICAGO – A gallery dedicated to the artwork of children’s author Dr. Seuss is opening in downtown Chicago.

Dr. Seuss – his real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel – wrote and illustrated such classics as “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham.” Bill Dreyer is curator of “The Art of Dr. Seuss.” He told WBBM-Radio the exhibit also will include “midnight paintings” that “really stretch well beyond preconceived notions” of the author’s art. Seuss did the paintings and sculptures at night and rarely, if ever, displayed them.

The opening will be next weekend at Water Tower Place.

A permanent space will be set up along Michigan Avenue.

SPRINGFIELD – Zakar Elbay apparently found religion. The 44-year-old state prison inmate was living at a transition center finishing a six-year sentence for possession of a stolen vehicle when he got a Christmas Day 2013 pass to work at a religious facility. He never returned.

Now he’s among nearly two dozen Illinois inmates The Associated Press discovered as “escaped” after compiling and analyzing state data.

There’s also Anthony Hebron, who was serving four years for drug possession when he skipped out of a transition center just a week before Elbay’s disappearance, after getting a pass for dinner and a movie.

Donald Scroggins, who’d be 86, slipped away from a low-level Menard prison intake facility in southern Illinois on July 31, 1974, where he had been placed after he violated parole on 1960 burglary and weapons charges. And the granddaddy of Illinois fugitives is Harlan Graham, who hasn’t been heard from

since April 18, 1955 and would be 111 years old.

The AP review was spurred by the escape last summer of Jared Carter from a prison work crew outside the walls of Robinson Correctional Center, which raised questions about how many inmates escape and how quickly those who do are caught. Carter was found four days later and was sentenced in March to 11 more years behind bars.

Officials with the Illinois Department of Corrections, shown the AP’s list, said they never stop looking for the renegades – even though some have been on the lam for decades.

“It could be today, tomorrow, or when you’re 70 years old,” said Mike Harrington, a Corrections apprehension specialist. “It’s not going to go away.”

It’s difficult to gauge Illinois’ success. National statistics on fugitives are not readily available. But in the Prairie State, 11 who were loose have been snared in the past two years, including two who had been gone since the mid-1990s, the data show, and Corrections spokesman Tom

Illinois bans microbeads in cosmetics and soaps

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Sunday that he said gives Illinois the distinction as the first state in the nation to ban the sale and manufacture of soaps and cosmetics containing microbeads.

Synthetic plastic microbeads – billed as a way to exfoliate or scrub surfaces – are found in facial cleansers, body washes and even some toothpastes.

But environmental experts have raised concerns of plastic pollution in waterways, saying microbeads can build up and accumulate toxic chemicals that could threaten the food chain.

The new Illinois law seeks to prohibit the manufacture of such products by the end of 2018 and the sale of the products by the end of 2019.

CHICAGO – A swanky brunch paying tribute Sunday to those who helped pass Illinois’ new same-sex marriage law wasn’t free from election-year politics as organizers deemed Gov. Pat Quinn “the most pro-gay governor in the history of Illinois” and knocked his Republican re-election challenger.

Quinn faces a difficult bid against businessman Bruce Rauner, who hasn’t specified his views on gay marriage but said he’d be open to changing the law if efforts are voter-driven.

Art Johnston, founder of Equality Illinois, which pushed for the law, echoed that idea during Sunday’s champagne brunch at a downtown hotel attended by both Democrats and Republicans.

He praised Quinn’s decision to sign the law as a moral one and blasted Rauner without mentioning him by name.

Other attendees included Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Republican Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka and state Rep. Tom Cross, one of three House Republicans who voted for the measure last year.

More time sought for robber who wanted prison term

CHICAGO – A 74-year-old man who gained notoriety for robbing a suburban Chicago bank so he

could return to a life behind bars should receive more prison time because his 2013 holdup violated conditions of his parole for a 1998 heist, U.S. prosecutors argue in recent court filings.

Walter Unbehaun robbed the BMO Harris Bank in Niles last year wielding a cane but no disguise.

He shocked arresting officers later by telling them his plan was to get caught so he could go back “home” to prison.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman in Chicago sentenced Unbehaun in April to 3½ years for that heist. But prosecutors now want another federal judge to tack on 1½ more years because the holdup violated his parole.

But in a filing Sunday, defense attorney Richard McLeese said it would be unfair to extend his client’s sentence after Judge Coleman already concluded 3½ years in prison was sufficient.

“What additional justification

exists for an additional 18 months of confinement?” he asked.

Defense filings have said loneliness and mild dementia may have led Unbehaun to conclude that a life in prison was preferable to life outside.

The next hearing is set for June 18.

Verdict expected in Chicago barge explosion case

CHICAGO – A federal judge in Chicago is expected to issue a verdict this week in the case of a tugboat captain charged with negligence in a deadly 2005 explosion.

Closing arguments were heard Friday in the trial of 36-year-old Dennis Egan.

Prosecutors say he illegally allowed deckhand Alex Oliva to use a propane torch to unfreeze a cargo pump. That, they say, set off an explosion that killed Oliva, sank the barge and dumped

600,000 gallons of oil into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

Egan’s attorney says he’s being unfairly blamed for a “tragic accident.”

Judge James Zagel says he’ll issue a verdict Monday.

Babies found dead in car to be buried

ROCKFORD – A northern Illinois coroner said her office is burying the remains of two baby girls found beneath garbage in the trunk of their mother’s car to “give them some dignity.”

Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia told the Rockford Register Star they’d been “thrown away like trash.”

They’ll be buried Wednesday at the Calvary Cemetery west of Rockford.

Detectives found their skeletal remains in 2009 while examining Katie Stockton’s car.

NATION BRIEFS Morgan recovering after surgery following crash TRENTON, N.J. – Tracy Morgan was recovering Sunday, but was expected to remain hospitalized for several weeks after having surgery on a broken leg suffered in a deadly chain-reaction crash on the New Jersey Turnpike that left two others critically injured and another man dead.

The 45-year-old actor and comedian, a former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” cast member, remained in critical condition but was “more responsive” Sunday after having surgery for a broken leg, said Morgan’s spokesman, Lewis Kay. Bowe Bergdahl says he was tortured by Taliban captors

By LOLITA C. BALDOR The Associated Press PARIS – U.S. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has told people treating him at an American military medical facility in Germany that he was tortured, beaten and held in a cage by his Taliban captors in Afghanistan after he tried to escape, a senior U.S. official said Sunday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss what Bergdahl has revealed about the conditions of his captivity. The New York Times first reported on the matter.

The official said it was difficult to verify the accounts Bergdahl has given since his release a week ago.

Bergdahl, now 28, was captured in June 2009 after he disappeared from his infantry unit. He was held for nearly five years by Taliban militants.

Taliban spokesmen could not be immediately reached for comment Sunday. On Friday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told The Associated Press by telephone that Bergdahl was held under “good conditions.” The claim could not be independently verified.

Military doctors at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center say that while Bergdahl is physically able to travel he’s not yet emotionally prepared to be reunited with his family. He has not yet spoken to his family.

It’s unclear when he may get to go home.

The Pentagon said in a statement Sunday that it would not comment on Bergdahl’s discussions with those caring for him.

Typically, a returned captive would spend from five days to three weeks in the phase of reintegration in which Bergdahl now finds himself, according to a Pentagon psychologist who is an ex-

CNN’s “State of the Union.”

He said the U.S. has confidence in the restrictions imposed on the former detainees, as a condition of their release.

“I am not telling you that they don’t have some ability at some point to go back and get involved” in the terrorism fight against the United States, Kerry said.

“But they also have an ability to get killed doing that, and I don’t think anybody should doubt the capacity of the United States of America to protect Americans. ... So these guys pick a fight with us in the future or now or at any time at enormous risk,” Kerry said.

The deal, which the Obama White House pulled off without adhering to a law requiring 30 days’ notice before the release of Guantanamo detainees, ignited a political firestorm that shows no signs of abating.

Lawmakers, both Republicans and Democrats, who initially praised Bergdahl’s release backed off amid questions about whether he was a deserter who walked away from his post and an outcry over the exchange.

Political parties fight to manipulate voting times

By DAVID A. LIEB The Associated Press JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Election Day is approaching, and you’ve made up your mind. There’s no need to wait.

In many states, you now can vote early.

Yet what’s convenient to you is increasingly an opportunity for political gamesmanship to the candidates on the ballot.

In key swing states, Democrats and Republicans are battling this year to gain even the slightest electoral advantages by tinkering with the times, dates and places where people can vote early. Their sights are set not only on this year’s gubernatorial and congressional campaigns, but on an even bigger prize: control of the White House after the 2016 elections.

Republican-controlled legislatures in Ohio, Missouri, North Carolina and Wisconsin all have taken recent steps to curtail early voting by limiting the days on which it’s available.

Meanwhile, Democratic-led

legislatures have passed measures expanding early voting or instant registration in Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts and Minnesota. And Democratic activists in Missouri are backing an initiative petition that could create one of the nation’s most expansive early voting systems.

The efforts all are born from a shared political assumption.

“For whatever reason, both sides seem to believe that increased early voting will help Democrats and hurt Republicans,” said David Kimball, a political science professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis who studies voting.

New research suggests that those partisan assumptions about early voting may not be true. Yet the perception is deeply grounded because of President Barack Obama’s pioneering use of early voting to drive a greater number of Democrats to the polls in his victories in 2008 and 2012.

At least 33 states now have laws that let people vote in-person before elections without needing an excuse to obtain an absentee ballot. Early vot-

But Democrats were especially aggressive in seeing the potential for their get-out-thevote efforts. In 2008, for example, some Democratic-aligned

groups drove worshippers from predominantly black churches straight to early voting sites in what became known as a “souls to the polls” campaign.

Following his re-election in 2012, Obama’s campaign reported being especially successful at getting their “sporadic supporters” to vote

early. In many states, Republican Mitt Romney won a majority of Election Day votes but couldn’t overcome Obama’s lead in early balloting, the report said.

The Republican National Committee concurred in its own post-election analysis that early voting “had a significant impact on the outcome of the election.”

Republicans now are trying to use their control of pivotal state capitols to pare back those early voting laws. North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed a law last year reducing the early voting days from 17 to 10 and eliminating sameday registration. The changes are being challenged by both the American Civil Liberties Union and the U.S. Justice Department, which contends the changes disadvantage blacks, who tend to vote early more often.

Also being challenged are Republican-backed policies in Ohio that prohibited early voting on Sundays or during evening hours. A new Wisconsin law allows early voting only on weekdays.

Israel no longer a cause that unifies U.S. Jews

By RACHEL ZOLL The Associated Press NEW YORK – Once a unifying cause for generations of American Jews, Israel is now bitterly dividing Jewish communities.

Jewish organizations are withdrawing invitations to Jewish speakers or performers considered too critical of Israel, in what opponents have denounced as an ideological litmus test meant to squelch debate. Some Jewish activists have formed watchdog groups, such as Citizens Opposed to Propaganda Masquerading as Art, or COPMA, and JCC Watch, to monitor programming for perceived anti-Israel bias. They argue Jewish groups that take donations for strengthening the community shouldn’t be giving a platform to Israel’s critics.

American campuses have become ideological battle

zones over Israeli policy in the Palestinian territories, with national Jewish groups sometimes caught up on opposing sides of the internal debate among Jewish students.

The “Open Hillel” movement of Jewish students is challenging speaker guidelines developed by Hillel, the major Jewish campus group, which bars speakers who “delegitimize” or “demonize” Israel.

Open Hillel is planning its first national conference in October.

And in a vote testing the parameters of Jewish debate over Israel, the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, a national coalition that for decades has represented the American Jewish community, denied membership in April to J Street, the 6-year-old lobby group that describes itself as pro-Israel and pro-peace and has sometimes criticized the Israeli government. Oppo-

nents of J Street have been showing a documentary called “The J Street Challenge,” in synagogues and at Jewish gatherings around the country, characterizing the group as a threat from within.

“I believe this has reached a level of absurdity now,” said Rabbi Sharon Brous, founder of the IKAR-LA Jewish community in California, which is considered a national model for reinvigorating religious life. “Even where people are acting from a place of love and deep commitment that Israel remains a vital and vibrant state, they are considered outside the realm. It’s seen as incredibly threatening and not aligned with the script the American Jewish community expects.”

In 2012, when Israel carried out an offensive in Gaza after an upsurge in rocket fire, Brous wrote an email to IKAR members that was published in The Jewish Journal

of Greater Los Angeles. She supported Israel’s right to defend itself, while also urging recognition of Palestinian suffering.

The result? She was overwhelmed with hate mail, and inspired competing op-eds and letters in the Journal from Jewish clergy and others until a prominent rabbi called for an end to the recriminations and name-calling.

American Jews have always vigorously debated Israeli policy, but mostly within the community and with an understanding that differences would be set aside if the Jewish state faced an existential threat. But the discussion within the U.S. has become more reflective of the very broad debate within Israel.

“It’s a very old issue that many countries face and now Israel faces: to what extent should domestic debate carry over when you’re abroad?” said Jonathan Sarna, a

Brandeis University scholar of American Jewish history.

“The critics of J Street and the like say, ‘Of course, it’s fine in Israel because the minute they call up the reserves, all politics disappear. Moreover, they have to live with the results of their decision.’ Their argument is that there should be a great difference between what you can do and say in Israel and what you can do or say in America. There are all sorts of enemies who make use of the words in America differently than they do in Israel.”

Pope dives into Mideast peace with prayer summit The Associated Press VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis plunged head-first into Mideast peace-making Sunday, welcoming the Israeli and Palestinian presidents to the Vatican for a remarkable evening of peace prayers just weeks after the last round of U.S.-sponsored negotiations collapsed.

Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas joked and embraced in the foyer of the Vatican hotel where Francis lives and later in the Vatican gardens, where they joined Francis in presiding over a sunset invocation of Jewish, Christian and Muslim prayers.

Francis told the two men, who signed the Oslo peace accords in 1993, that he hoped the summit would mark “a new journey” toward peace.

He said too many children had been killed by war and violence, and that their memory should instill the strength and patience to work for dialogue

and coexistence.

“Peacemaking calls for courage, much more so than warfare,” he said. “It calls for the courage to say yes to encounter and no to conflict.”

The event had the air of an outdoor summer wedding, complete with receiving line and guests mingling on the lawn as a string ensemble played. Only the two key protagonists are technically on opposite sides of the intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Vatican officials have insisted that Francis had no political agenda in inviting the two leaders to pray at his home other than to rekindle a desire for peace. But the meeting could have greater symbolic significance, given that Francis was able to bring them together at all so soon after peace talks failed and at a time that the Israeli government is trying to isolate Abbas.

“In the Middle East, symbolic gestures and incremental steps are important,” noted the Rev. Thomas Reese, a veteran Vatican analyst for the National Catholic Reporter.

“And who knows what conversations can occur behind closed doors in the Vatican.”

The meeting has also cemented Francis’ reputation as a leader unhindered by diplomatic and theological protocol who is willing to go out on a limb for the sake of peace.

Francis capitalized on both his own enormous popularity and the peace-loving heritage of his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, to bring the two sides together.

The unusual prayer summit was a feat of diplomatic and religious protocol, organized in the two weeks since Francis issued the surprise invitation to Peres and Abbas from Manger Square in Bethlehem.

It took place in the lush Vatican gardens in the shadow of St. Peter’s Basilica, the most religiously neutral place in the tiny city-state. It incorporated Jewish, Christian and Muslim prayers, delivered in Hebrew, English, Arabic and Italian and with musical interludes from the three faith traditions.

Ex-military chief sworn in as Egypt’s president

By THOMAS ADAMSON, and THEODORA TONGAS The Associated Press LA FIERE, France – Nearly 1,000 paratroopers dropped out of the sky in Normandy on Sunday – but this time they did so in peace, instead of to wrest western France from the Nazis as they did during World War II. Drawing huge crowds who braved hot weather and lined the historic landing area at La Fiere, the aerial spectacle re-enacted the drama of the Normandy landings and served to cap commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Among the planes ferrying paratroopers for the event was a restored C-47 U.S. military transport plane that dropped Allied troops on the village of Sainte-Mere-Eglise – a stone’s throw from La Fiere – on June 6, 1944.

And the pilots who originally flew it took the controls again last week, 70 years later, remembering their experiences.

Sunday saw dozens of veterans escorted down a sandy path to a special section to watch the show alongside thousands of spectators – most of whom lined two sides

of the field. Others took shelter in the shade as the lack of wind caused the sun to beat down hard.

Planes including the C-47 aircraft flew by loudly overhead several times, with two dozen military paratroopers – from countries including the U.S., Britain, France and Germany – jumping with each passage.

They were scenes reminiscent of the pivotal event, when around 15,000 Allied paratroopers were dropped in and around the village of Sainte-Mere-Eglise on D-Day. It became the first to be liberated by the Allies and remains one of the enduring symbols of the Normandy invasion.

Veteran Julian “Bud” Rice, a C-47 pilot who participated in the airdrops of Normandy on D-Day, watched the show.

“It’s good to see 800 paratroopers jump here today, but the night that we came in, we had 800 airplanes with 10,000 paratroopers that we dropped that night, so it was a little more,” he said.

Rice flew in a C-47 aircraft earlier in the week, similar to the one he flew on D-Day. With him was veteran pilot Bill Prindible, with whom he

watched the show.

“Very impressive,” Prindible said. “You just have to imagine there’d be a squadron of 72 aircraft, 36 aircraft going by every time one of those guys went by.”

At the invitation of the French government, this restored Douglas C-47 – known as Whiskey 7 – flew for the festivities and released paratroopers as it did when it dropped troops behind enemy lines under German fire.

The plane has almost as a rich a story to tell as the pilots who flew it.

Although the twin-prop Whiskey 7, so named because of its W-7 squadron marking, looks much the same today as it did on June 6, 1944. It looked very different when it arrived at the National Warplane Museum in western New York as a donation eight years ago. It had been converted to a corporate passenger plane.

The museum’s president said that for its restoration they had to take out the interior because it then had a dry bar, lounge seats and a table with a map of the Bahamas.

And it has moved with the times – now sporting two GPS systems to keep the aircraft on course.

CAIRO – Egypt’s former military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, winner by a landslide in last month’s presidential election, was sworn into office Sunday nearly a year after he ousted the nation’s first freely elected leader.

The retired field marshal called for unity and hard work, while vowing that there would be no reconciliation with those who took up arms against the government and Egyptians. That was a thinly veiled reference to supporters of Mohammed Morsi, the Islamist president el-Sissi removed last July, and Islamic militants waging attacks against the government.

“There will be reconciliation between the sons of our nation except those who had committed crimes against them or adopted violence,” el-Sissi said. “There will be no acquiescence or laxity shown to those who resorted to violence.”

He did not mention by name Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, which was declared a terrorist group by the government last December. But el-Sissi’s rise coincides with detention of thousands and the killing of hundreds of Morsi supporters. El-Sissi also vowed to fight corruption and appeared to make an overture to pro-democracy and secular youth activists, many of whom boycotted last month’s presidential election. They accuse the new president of reviving toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak’s police state, pointing to a law passed last year that restricts protests as well as the jailing of a number of well-known

activists. He peppered his 55-minute address with references to “freedom, social justice and bread,” the main slogan by youth groups behind the January 2011 uprising that ended Mubarak’s 29year rule.

El-Sissi’s July 3 ouster of Morsi triggered a cycle of deadly violence and further polarized Egypt. Now, el-Sissi faces the daunting tasks of reviving Egypt’s anemic economy, fighting Islamic militants and cementing his rule after three years of deadly turmoil in the Arab world’s most populous country.

Under his rule, el-Sissi said Egypt will work for regional security and stability.

He also called on Egyptians to work hard so that their rights and freedoms could grow.

“Let us differ for the sake of our nation and not over it; let us do that as part of a unifying national march in which every party listens to the other objectively and without ulterior motives,” he said. “Let our differences be the source of enrichment, diversity and giving that add the spirit of cooperation and love to our work.”

El-Sissi’s inauguration came less than a year after he ousted Morsi following days of mass protests demanding he step down. He has been praised by many in a wave of nationalist fervor fueled by a jingoistic media, despite the harsh crackdown by security forces. Supporters drew comfort from his ascension, convinced he is the right man for Egypt. Tens of thousands gathered into the night Sunday at Cairo’s famed Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising, to celebrate his inauguration.

Wait for facts to judge soldier, rescue Is U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl a hero or a traitor?

The question is dominating U.S. media, even though every answer has more “ifs” and “buts” than Minnesota has mosquitoes.

While that’s not surprising given America’s free speech, 24/7 news cycle and 24.7-second attention span, it is disappointing because this debate too quickly shifted attention away from the only facts really known about Bergdahl.

He’s a U.S. Army officer who spent the past five years in captivity of the Taliban.

No matter the ifs and buts about how he got to that point, information known to this point shows he basically was a prisoner of war.

And if Americans have learned anything from many wars, it’s that we should never leave behind our fellow Americans who served on the front lines defending this nation’s interests and fulfilling missions most of us cannot imagine.

Seriously, it’s quite sad that some Americans seem to be saying we should not rescue members of the U.S. military unless we’re certain they didn’t cause their own plight or aren’t proven heroes.

Certainly, military leaders know they need to investigate Bergdahl’s disappearance in June 2009 plus his status the past five years.

Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said it best earlier this week when he told NBC

News, “There have been several looks into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, but we’ve never publicly said anything, primarily because we haven’t had a chance to speak with Sgt. Bergdahl himself.”

News reports Wednesday state such efforts are underway.

Sadly but symbolic of America’s quick-to-judge political system, too many people, especially politicians, aren’t waiting for those answers. From the halls of Congress to the White House website, politicians and voters are demanding immediate accountability for not just Bergdahl but even President Barack Obama potentially breaking a law.

Slammers sweep Rascals on DeBruin hit in 14th

By MIKE FITZGERALD Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Get out the brooms.

Grant DeBruin’s RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 14th inning lifted the Joliet Slammers to a 2-1 victory Sunday over the River City Rascals and a sweep of their three-game Frontier League weekend series at Silver Cross Field.

“It’s always nice to get a big hit like that. We love the game too much to get it over in nine innings,” DeBruin said, referring Sunday’s game and a 17-inning game last Thursday at Southern Illinois. “It’s always nice to sweep a team, especially at home in front of our fans.

They’ve been doing well, so it was big to get three wins from them.”

Joliet (9-12) and River City (13-8) played 10 innings of scoreless baseball before the Rascals scored in the top of the 11th.

Two errors by Slammers second baseman Jose Garcia put runners on second and third with one out for Josh Ludy. He singled to right field off Chase Doremus to make it 1-0. Ryan Connolly relieved and struck out Evan Crawford before retiring Curran Redal on a fly out to left field to end the threat.

The Slammers’ Russell Moldenhauer came up with two outs in the bottom of the inning. He broke his bat fouling off a changeup and then with a 3-2 count he launched a high fly ball to right field.

Crawford went back to the wall and camped under it, but the ball had enough to get over the wall for a game-tying home run, Moldenhauer’s third of the season.

Moldenhauer then set the stage for DeBruin’s heroics in the 14th inning, scorching a double down the right field line. Manager Jeff Isom then lifted Moldenhauer for pinch-runner Tyler Grogg.

One out later, DeBruin won the game.

“There wasn’t much to it [the home run]. I thought the outfielder was camped. I guess the wind shifted a little bit for it, and it just went out.”

Joliet starter Blair Walters did not figure in the decision but he pitched sensationally. He threw eight scoreless innings and struck out nine Rascals before giving way to Doremus, Connolly and Brett Zawacki. The one run scored by the Rascals was unearned.

Zawacki earned his first win of the season.

The Rascals’ Tommy Mendoza, a member of the Slammers’ staff in 2011, threw seven shutout innings before giving way to his bullpen.

Andy Urban, the sixth pitcher used by River City, took the loss.

“Everything was kind of working,” Walters said. “I was able to locate. My defense made some plays behind me. I was able to work around a couple of walks and we got the win and a good series sweep.”

Walters and Mendoza followed the pattern established earlier in the season, where pitching dominated. The Slammers outscored the Rascals 8-3 in the three games combined. River City had arrived at Silver Cross Field riding a seven-game winning streak.

“This was a well-pitched game on both sides,” Isom said. “Walters was outstanding, and our bullpen came in and got some big outs when they had to.

“All around, a very good, well-played game and thank

goodness we have Russell [Moldenhauer] on our side.

He’s a quality hitter. He understands the strike zone, and it was just a matter of time before he got a pitch

that was out over the plate.

He gave us a chance to play extras.”

Joliet hosts Traverse City at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday to open a three-game series.

“From the first day of practice we put down our goals and one was to win the state championship,” Phalen said.

“We felt a bit cheated last year since we felt that we could have won it. We haven’t gone three a lot and been tested that much. But we got tested today and showed that we can win in three games. We’re a really tight-knit group with great team chemistry so we weren’t going to lose. We didn’t come here to come up short.”

One of the team’s greatest strengths was that anyone could step up their games and perform at a high level when they needed to. A good example of that was Carson Slager, who recorded 10 kills and four block assists in the semifinal victory over Lake Park.

“It just feels so great to come this far after falling short of state last year,” Slager said.

“We had to fight hard in order to go three games in both the semifinals and finals. It’s been awhile since we went three games but we stuck together and fought hard and said to just worry about getting the next point and we could do it and we proved that we could.

This was our final goal and we worked hard for it. It’s a great last memory of high school.”

After the Griffins eked out the win in the middle set, things started clicking for them and they built a decisive lead over the Blue Devils, who performed exceptionally well over the weekend for a squad

who had only won two-thirds of their matches this season.

“This means the world to us,” said Aaron Redweik, who had seven kills against Warren. “From day one we were focused on state and that’s all our mindset was. Mr. Fiore basically told us that we had to play together to win it and we had to do that in both games today. We hadn’t gone three very often, but we knew that if we kept playing like we could that we’d have it. Warren was a great opponent, but we just had to play our game and we did.”

This was the third time in 13 years that East has won a title in an elimination series, including its first since the 2005 football championship. Robby Hoffman’s sister, Meghan, played on the other title winner, the 2002 softball squad. Also, the girls track and field team repeated as state champs two weeks ago and cheerleading won a title earlier this year.

“This was our goal from the beginning and we wanted it and we really had to fight to get it,” Hoffman said. “Some of these guys have been [with] varsity and they finally got what they wanted. Warren put up a really good fight but we don’t really get rattled and we keep composure and just work hard and don’t try to make mistakes. This one also really means a lot since it’s our school’s third championship in one year.”

HOFFMAN ESTATES – After coming ever so close to not capturing a state championship, Lincoln-Way East’s boys volleyball team was able to savor its first title that much more.

The Griffins were definitely on the ropes in Saturday’s finals after upset-minded Warren Township won the opener and then tied things at 24-24 in the second set. But East demonstrated why it was top-ranked in the state for much of the season by winning the middle set and then grabbing a big early lead in the finale before finally sealing the deal to record its 24th straight victory to cap a special 41-1 season.

Coach Kris Fiore’s squad became just the second team in state history to lose opening sets in both the semifinals and finals and still emerge as champions. Not bad when you consider that they had only lost three other first sets prior to Saturday’s play. After falling a win short of state trips the past two years, East had set its sights on winning it all.

With a talented group featuring 10 seniors to lead the way, the Griffins had their hands full on the last day of the season but managed to capture three-set thrillers over both Lake Park and Warren to earn the trophy.

“Today was definitely tougher than we expected since throughout the playoffs we had won everything in two,” said Ryan Vorderer, who had 30 kills in Saturday’s two matches. “After losing the first game to Lake Park, I said that every championship team has to face adversity at some point or another, so we needed to respond, and that’s what we did, It’s great to finally say that we’re state champions and not just No. 1 in the state.”

A year ago, East’s chances for a state run were affected when Josh Phalen suffered an injury. The libero, who contributed 13 digs in the victory over Warren, was happy to not only be able to help his team in the postseason but to see them win it all this season.

LWE softball can complete three-peat VIEWS Dick Goss The Lincoln-Way East softball team is in position to complete a rare three-peat.

Not that it will be easy.

The Griffins’ girls track and boys volleyball teams have won state championships this spring. Kudos on both fronts.

However, both of those teams entered their respective state tournaments among the favorites. Meanwhile, coach Elizabeth Pawlicki’s softball team, after winning the Class 4A Andrew Sectional on Saturday, will enter Monday’s supersectional against Edwardsville at Illinois State University still in an underdog role.

The Griffins, sectional champs for the first time since 2007, are 26-10, certainly a respectable record against a rugged schedule. SouthWest Suburban Blue rivals Lockport and Joliet West, their two sectional victims, had beaten them three of four during the regular season. East split with the Porters and was 0-2 against the Tigers.

Last year, Minooka rallied from a 13-4 deficit and beat Lockport, 15-14, in the sectional semifinals at East. The Indians went on from there to win the Class 4A state championship.

Lesson learned. A team sometimes needs that one come-from-behind victory, then gets on a roll and is unstoppable. The Griffins rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Lincoln-Way Central, 4-3, in the regional semifinals. Since then, they have torn the cover off the ball.

It’s all about getting hot at the right time.

“When we won the first one in the postseason, we got all pumped up and it has carried through,” Nikole Van Gennep said after her arm and bat helped end Joliet West’s dream, 12-2, Saturday. “Ever since the Lincoln-Way Central game, we’ve scored in double digits every game.

“You can tell when we go up there to the plate that we’re so excited. We’re all smiling.”

“Our team supports each other,” said Jenny Van Geertry, who also enjoyed a huge sectional tournament with the bat. “We’re always up in the dugout.

“We lost a little bit earlier in the year, but that only motivated us. We came out here wanting it.”

Pawlicki, however, said her team basically has been on even keel throughout the spring.

“The girls have been there all season,” she said. “The postseason brings a little more now, but they’ve been the same all year. I’m just proud of them.”

Griffins everywhere can revel in their accomplishments.

The competitive cheerleading team got things rolling a few months ago with a state championship. Then this

spring, girls track and boys volleyball have laid claim to No. 1.

Softball? With three victories yet to be had, it is early to begin thinking in those terms.

On the other hand, Joliet West had been 30-3 since an 0-4 start before running into East for the third time. You wonder how many teams that remain would be capable of dropping a 12-2 spanking on the Tigers.

“They are a very good team,” West coach Heather Suca said of East. “They are on fire, hitting it hard.”

Suppose that continues for another three games. Why not?

IN BASEBALL The Joliet area has Providence alive in Class 4A baseball and Lemont rolling along in 3A. The Celtics, who meet Edwardsville in Monday’s

supersectional at the University of Illinois, had their ups and downs during the season.

But they play a strong schedule and have things going in a positive direction at the right time.

With Jake Godfrey, Dylan Rosa and Brent Villasenor heading the pitching staff and Rosa and Phil Kunsa working their magic at the plate, it is not a stretch to imagine Providence as a state championship-caliber team.

Ditto for Lemont, which faces De La Salle in Monday’s supersectional at Crestwood.

The Indians won the Joliet Catholic Regional to open their posteaseon run, and as noted earlier, it would be a shame if the winner of a regional that included Lemont, Lincoln-Way West and JCA did not get to state.

“It’s the best decision for me and my family,” he said. “My family is all behind me.”

Travis said he talked with representatives of various major league teams before the draft.

“I knew Boston was real interested,” he said. “It’s great.

Ex-JCA All-American Isaac eager for chance to face his buddies

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ever since former Joliet Catholic All-America running back Ty Isaac announced last week that he is transferring to Michigan, Ty Isaac has been busy texting.

“I’ve texted a few buddies from this area who I’ll be playing against,” he said. “Just at Northwestern alone, there’s Malin [Jones], JB [Butler], Blake King and Parrker Westphal. Parrker is my mom’s godson.”

Westphal was an all-state defensive back at Bolingbrook.

King played at Minooka and Jones and Butler were Isaac’s JCA teammates before he graduated and left the Midwest for Southern California, where he pursued his dream to play major Division I football. However, Northwestern granted Jones a release from his scholarship Friday, and he plans to transfer.

“It will be neat to be playing against some guys I know from around here,” Isaac said. “I’m looking forward to that.”

In May, he announced that he was transferring from USC to a school in the Midwest, wanting to be closer to home.

He cited a health concern with a family member.

Isaac said he does not know when the NCAA will rule on his request for a hardship waiver. If it goes in his favor, he will be eligible to play this fall. If not, he will red-shirt and return to the gridiron in the fall of 2015.

“I would be very disappointed if I didn’t get it,” he said. “I think I have a really good case.

But whether that happens was not a factor in me deciding on Michigan.”

Isaac always had Notre Dame high on his list out of high school and many felt

South Bend, Indiana, could be his destination now. However, “USC could block schools that I wanted to talk to so that knocked Notre Dame out,” Isaac said.

In addition to Michigan, he visited Illinois, where former JCA backfield mate Josh Ferguson is the No. 1 running back.

“Even outside of football, I see Josh around,” Isaac said.

“He and I talked when I was visiting Illinois. I liked Illinois and I always liked Michigan.”

He will play in coach Brady Hoke’s program for the Wolverines’ new offensive coordi-

nator, Doug Nussmeier.

“Coach ‘Nuss’ runs a system I am familiar with,” Isaac said.

“It’s similar to what we ran last fall at USC. And he wants to run the ball a lot.”

Isaac rushed for 236 yards in 40 carries, a 5.9 average, last season. He was getting more playing time and beginning to be noticed more late in the season.

“Obviously, you couldn’t talk to any college football player who wouldn’t say they want to play more,” Isaac said.

“That’s not why I transferred.

I take a lot of positives away from my year at USC.”

ORLAND PARK – Fans wondering whether the Cubs made the right choice when they selected Indiana power-hitting catcher Kyle Schwarber with the No. 4 selection in the MLB Draft can rest easily.

“The Cubs definitely are getting an unbelievable player,” said Indiana junior first baseman and Providence graduate Sam Travis, himself a second-round pick of the Boston Red Sox. “More than that, he’s even a better guy. He’s a great young man. Watch, he will be a success down the road.”

Travis, the 67th overall selection, was named the Big Ten Player of the Year. He and Schwarber, along with third baseman Dustin DeMuth, a fifth-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers, helped turn Indiana into a top-10 caliber team.

The Hoosiers (44-15), who were aiming at a return trip to the College World Series, were knocked out of the postseason

Travis had the opportunity to play on the Fenway Park Field when he was in the Cape Cod summer league.

“We had a workout there, took some ground balls and had BP [batting practice],” Travis said. “Yeah, it was fun to hit a couple over the monster. It was awesome.”

If there are any shortcomings in Travis’ game, they are dwarfed by one glowing positive – he can flat-out hit.

He finished this season with a .347 batting average. His 85 hits included 16 doubles, two triples and 12 home runs. He drove in 58 runs. In addition, he made only two errors at first base.

“I know I’m going to hit,” Travis said. “I took my defense more seriously this year. I took pride in it.”

Travis called his whole baseball experience to date “surreal.” Between all the success and accolades at Indiana and now being a second-round draft pick, “I don’t have any regrets,” he said. “Keep working hard and good things happen.”

Earnhardt turned Brad Keselowski’s trash into Victory Lane treasure, pulling away down the stretch Sunday at Pocono Raceway for his second win of the season and a secured spot in the Chase field.

He paired his first career win at Pocono with his Daytona 500 championship for his first multi-win season since 2004.

“I feel like I’m such a lucky guy to have this second opportunity again to be competitive,” Earnhardt said.

But for as strong as he ran in the No. 88 Chevrolet, Keselowski gift-wrapped this win when he yielded the lead with five laps left in a desperate attempt to clear debris from his

grille and cool his overheated engine.

Keselowski’s gamble backfired – he couldn’t get the draft needed from the lapped traffic to clear his car and make one final pass for the win on Earnhardt. Keselowski’s No. 2 Ford still had the oomph in the engine needed to finish the race, and he had his second-straight runner-up finish.

“It was definitely a mistake because the engine made it,” Keselowski said, rubbing his face. “It probably shouldn’t have.”

Junior shook off the rising red gauges in the No. 88 that could have had his car meet a similar fate as Keselowski.

“They were still within good reason to stand on it and give it hell,” he said.

Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin and rookie Kyle Larson completed the top five.

Earnhardt gave Hendrick Motorsports four straight wins, following Jeff Gordon at Kansas and Jimmie Johnson’s victory at Charlotte and Dover. Johnson overcame a pit road accident to finish sixth.

Earnhardt stuck to his end of the deal, spraying all types of beverages in a jubilant Victory Lane. Johnson was the first driver over to congratulate him.

I don’t have much to do tomorrow,” Earnhardt said, grinning. “Tonight’s going to be a long one.”

Earnhardt, long NASCAR’s most popular driver, gave the Pocono crowd plenty of reason to go wild. He was mobbed by almost 100 fans outside the Pocono media center, screaming his name and clamoring for a picture with the winner.

He waved and ducked into a waiting car, whisked away for another party.

Maybe the fans should try tweeting at him to earn his attention.

He loved the “go get ‘ems” that dot his feed, though it’s the “haters” that he really feeds off.

“The real short ones, like, ‘You suck,’ those are the best ones,” he said, smiling. “I just favorite them and block them.

It’s so much fun.”

Earnhardt’s second win

means he is guaranteed to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field. He won for the 29th time in 519 career Sprint Cup starts.

“When we won at Daytona, man, it made the rest of the year a lot more relaxing, a lot easier,” he said. “It makes it fun because you can just go to the track and just race, not worry about points.”

Cubs bullpen struggles in 4-3 loss to Marlins The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The Cubs were feeling hopeful even after their five-game winning streak ended Sunday. “[We] just forget about this one and bounce back tomorrow because we cannot be perfect,” reliever Pedro Strop said. “We gave our best and it didn’t work, but [we] just bounce back tomorrow.”

Strop and Brian Schlitter would rather forget this loss, for sure. They allowed two runs each in the Cubs’ 4-3 defeat to the Miami Marlins.

Houston doesn’t mind being sidekick to Allen

By ADAM L. JAHNS ajahns@suntimes.com Defensive end Lamarr Houston was the Bears’ big free-agent signing until he wasn’t. The arrival of Jared Allen – a four-time All-Pro end and former defensive player of the year with a big personality – tends to overshadow others.

But Houston doesn’t mind the Robin role to Allen’s Batman. They can still be a dynamic duo.

“It’s amazing – just amazing,” Houston said of playing with Allen after organized team activities last week. “It’s a good move made by [general manager Phil Emery], the head coach [Marc Trestman] and organization that wants to win.

“They went out and grabbed everybody they needed. It’s a good thing. It’s even better for me to get to learn from somebody like that.”

Allen’s track record says that Houston could be looking at his best season yet when it comes to sacking quarterbacks. The evidence: Brian Robison’s and Ray Edwards’ success.

Robison recorded 9 sacks in 2013, 8½ in 2012 and 8 in

2012 as the starter opposite Allen. Before Robison, Edwards, a fourth-round pick in 2006 who is now out of the league, had the best seasons of his career: 8 sacks in 2010, 8½ in 2009 and 5 in 2008.

The basis for some of their success is simple. Allen garners more attention from opposing offenses, leaving the opposite end with more oneon-one opportunities.

“When you play against Jared, you have to make sure you have the proper protection plan.” Trestman said earlier this offseason. “You’re focused during the week on making sure that you’re doing the best you can in preventing him from getting to the passer. That’s what difference-makers do.”

Julius Peppers made a similar impact for Israel Idonije (career-best eight sacks in 2010). But Allen also has 56½ sacks to Peppers’ 37½ over the past four seasons, while the Vikings totaled 166 sacks to the Bears’ 139.

Idonije and Corey Wootton combined for 14½ sacks in 2012, but in the same season Robison and backup Everson Griffen totaled 16½ together.

Last year, Wootton and Shea McClellin combined for 7

sacks as the primary ends opposite Peppers.

Houston, who was signed two weeks before Allen, is known for his run-stopping prowess, but he did lead the Raiders the past two seasons with 6 and 4 sacks.

Houston, who also will play tackle, believes more sacks will come with playing on the same line as Allen.

The Bears are hoping so, too, after finishing last in sacks in 2013.

“I would imagine and hope that he does,” Houston said.

“He’s Jared Allen. I suspect that everybody is going to be ready to key [on] him.”

Allen has stressed the importance of learning how to play with Houston and other linemen. If last week’s dustup against the first-team offense is any indication, Houston and Allen already know how to rattle opponents together.

“We’ll develop a great chemistry,” Houston said.

“He has the most knowledge of football right now. The guy has had 45 sacks in three years. You can’t ask for more than that. Just to be able to sit with him every day, talk about football and understand different things about the game, it’s a blessing really.”

Something that belongs to just Madelynn Therapy dog gives Morris girl a sense of ownership

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Enzi, a 7-month-old German shepherd, performs well in her hourlong training sessions, she knows it.

Because it’s Madelynn Panti, the 10-year-old that Enzi will one day serve as service dog for, bestowing the treats, said Madelynn’s mother, Suzanne Pridemore, of Morris.

“Madelynn is learning how to interact with Enzi. It’s making her more outgoing,” Pridemore said. “She’s the one always saying, ‘Mom, we have to bring Enzi. I need her.’

For her to say that is pretty exciting.”

Madelynn has cerebral palsy, cortical vision impairment (making her legally blind), developmental delays and will undergo a derotational hip osteotomy this summer to reposition her left leg, as it is pulling her hip out of its socket, Pridemore said. She also sees vision specialists in Wheaton, whom Pridemore hopes can improve Madelynn’s sight.

Caring for Madelynn is pure joy for Pridemore, who also is a bank teller supervisor, single mother of two children, part-time restaurant worker and student. Pridemore recently received her associate degree in supervision and management from Joliet Junior College, and is working toward her bachelor degree in accounting, she said.

“My goal is to have just one job,” Pridemore said, “and to be home every night to put my kids to bed.”

Pridemore hopes that Enzi will encourage Madelynn, who has never walked, to walk. Pridemore is certain Madelynn wants to walk, too.

“She takes a step if you hold her hands. She’ll walk all day with you,” Pridemore said.

“Madelynn is very excited.

When we ask her, ‘Who is going to help you walk,’ she says, ‘Enzi.’ ” A cousin in Virginia got Pridemore thinking along the lines of service dogs. The cousin has a degenerative knee disorder and trained her own service dog. While researching breeders and prices online, Pridemore saw photos of 12-week-old Enzi, read the description and knew she had found Madelynn’s dog.

“It was everything we needed her to be,” Pridemore said.

“She was smart, gentle, family-oriented and well-behaved.

So I emailed the breeder and she emailed me back the price.

It was double of my price range. I said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’ ” But the breeder emailed back, asking why Pridemore needed a service dog. Once the breeder learned about Madelynn, the breeder significantly dropped the price. On Feb. 13, Pridemore was on her way to get Madelynn her dog.

“It was so exciting, the longest hour and a half drive in my life,” Pridemore said.

Enzi joined a family that also included Madelynn’s brother, 4-year-old Koen Panti, and Skielerr (now deceased), a 17-year-old Dalmatian that had lived with Pridemore since Skielerr was just 6 weeks old.

Enzi’s playful energy did not thrill Skielerr but was perfect for Madelynn.

“Enzi has really changed our house,” Pridemore said.

“Madelynn never wanted anything to do with Skielerr – she never petted her – but Enzi started interacting with her right away. She loves Enzi very much. When we ask her whose puppy Enzi is, she says, ‘My puppy.’”

The entire experience is giving Madelynn a sense that something belongs to her, Pridemore said. At home, it’s easy for Koen to overtake any toy Madelynn drops (especially if Pridemore can’t get in a room fast enough to return it). Besides, Pridemore added, Madelynn has little interest in toys and that also troubles Pridemore.

“I feel horrible when Madelynn just sits there in front

of the TV and she’s not doing anything,” Pridemore said.

So far, Enzi is working on “sit,” stay” and “lie down.”

She will also learn “retrieval,” “balance” and “mobility.” So in addition to helping Madelynn walk, Enzi will be able to pick up any toys Madelynn drops.

“We got some balls on a rope and put them on the door,” Pridemore said. “And she actually opened the door while holding onto the balls and pulling back.”

Enzi is taking her new role quite seriously, Pridemore said. When Enzi is out in the world, she tones down her enthusiasm because Enzi understands she is working, a role she appears to love.

“At home she’s just a crazed dog,” Pridemore said, “but put her jacket on and she calms down and is ready to go.”

MANAUS, Brazil – Between the parents, the four kids, the dog, the two sloths, the python and the baby caiman, it’s a tight fit in the Silva family’s two-room floating home in the Amazon rainforest.

The exotic houseguests help 35-year-old fisherman Evandro Correia da Silva and his family eke out a living on their native Solimoes River, on the opposite bank from Manaus, a World Cup host city where the U.S., English and Italian teams will be among those battling it out.

Tourist boats dock on what effectively is the Silva family’s front doorstep, and the family snaps into action, peeling the reluctant sloths from the legs of the plastic patio table, rousing the retiring snake from its hiding spot in the corner and offering up the snapping, 2-footlong caiman to the cameras.

Everyone hugs the adorable three-toed sloths, whose sleepy eyes belie an unexpectedly potent grip, while only the boldest guests – and Silva’s 3-year-old daughter – dare wear the snake draped around their shoulders or

hold the alligator-like caiman. In return, the visitors purchase soft drinks out of the family fridge and perhaps also leave a cash donation.

With Manaus’ environmental police out to shut down operations like his, Silva insists the animals aren’t pets but just temporary guests: He said he returns the sloths to the forest after about two weeks, swapping them out for fresh ones; the snake, known as a “jiboia,” in Portuguese, stays 10 days, while the caiman spends just 24 hours in its water-filled basin inside the house. To keep sentimental attachments in check, the family doesn’t name the animals.

While it might bring in decent money, this sort of business is not for the faint of heart, Silva warned as he showed off multiple snakebite scars on his hands and forearms.

Much has been made by the British tabloid press about the dangers posed by the local fauna in and around Manaus – the most exotic of Brazil’s 12 World Cup host cities, where some 52,000 foreigners are expected to attend four matches after the monthlong tournament kicks off on June 12.

After a bridge deal in which your partner made a mistake, you hope that he sees the reason for his error; you do not want him confused.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump after West has overcalled in spades. West leads his fourth-highest spade. How should South plan the play after taking this trick with dummy’s queen, the honor from the shorter side first?

North’s double was negative, promising four hearts (and maybe five or six if too weak to respond two hearts). His three-spade cue-bid asked South to bid three no-trump with a spade stopper.

South has eight top tricks: one spade, one diamond and six clubs.

He can get his ninth winner from hearts or diamonds, but there is a risk that the defenders will run the spade suit first. Since trick one indicates that West has the spade ace, South must work to keep East off the lead.

At first glance, this might suggest taking two diamond finesses. However, that is confused thinking. If East has the heart ace, the defenders can always triumph.

After a diamond finesse loses, West can shift to a heart, and East can push through a spade, resulting in down two.

If West has the heart ace, though, the contract is safe regardless of the diamond position. The simplest approach is to cross to hand with a club, then to lead the heart four toward dummy.

ADVICE Siblings are growling over reimbursement for cat-sitting Dear Abby: I accepted a request from my brother to watch his cats while he was across the country for a few months.

During that time, one of them matured and started marking his territory all over my house. The dilemma was quickly taken care of with a trip to the vet, after permission from my brother.

My brother now insists because I accepted responsibility for the cats “in every way” in his absence, I shouldn’t expect reimbursement for the professional carpet cleaner I rented or the vet bill I paid for neutering the cat.

Regular exercise is important for a healthy brain and body DearDr.K: I’m in my late 60s.

I’ve read that regular exercise helps prevent memory loss. How does it do that? And how much exercise do I need to reap this benefit?

DearReader: It’s easy to understand why regular exercise would be good for your bones, muscles, lungs and heart. Regularly challenging those organs would make them stronger.

But the brain? Regular exercise often feels mindless. Indeed, that’s one of its pleasures. You feel as if you’re turning off your turbulent brain and experiencing the rest of your body.

Nevertheless, many studies show regular exercise – in humans and in animals – improves brainpower. We don’t know how this works, but there are some reasonable theories.

For one, a stronger heart and lungs improves the supply of oxygen throughout the body, including the brain. For another, exercise helps reduce the risk for diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and stroke; all are diseases that can damage the brain.

There’s also some evidence

ASK DR. K Dr. Anthony Komaroff exercise increases the production of a brain chemical that multiplies the connections between brain cells. The communication between our brain cells is what makes us smart.

Finally, we’ve learned recently that regular exercise causes muscles to release substances in the blood that have positive effects on health. For example, my Harvard colleague Bruce Spiegelman recently discovered a hormone made in muscle, called irisin.

Regular exercise causes muscle to release irisin into the blood; it travels around the body and does lots of good things. It fights obesity by burning calories. Recent studies also indicate it might slow the aging of cells.

We don’t know precisely how much exercise is needed for good brain health. But studies suggest that although the exercise needn’t be extreme, it should be moderately vigorous and regular.

Below are exercise guidelines

for you and others who are 65 years or older and are generally fit. They will deliver benefits for your body as well as your brain. If you have a health condition that limits your activity, do as much as you are able to do comfortably and safely. Always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Aim to do the following: • Two and a half hours (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (for example, brisk walking) every week; or • One and a quarter hours (75 minutes) of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (for example, jogging or running) every week; and • Muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms).

You also can build physical activity into your daily routine.

When possible, walk instead of driving; use the stairs instead of the elevator; plant a garden.
