Central Presbyterian Church - Joliet The Central Presbyterian Church on the northwest corner of Richards Street and First Avenue was built in 1895, with Joliet limestone under the direction of the Rev. D. C. Milner, and the architectural firm of Knox and Elliot.

The Victorian Gothic style church, shown in the then image, was built on the east side of the city as the population of Joliet moved from the city center.

Organized as a church in 1844, the first Central Presbyterian Church was built in downtown Joliet on the southeast corner of Ottawa and Van Buren streets. The bell that rang for more than 40 years in the tower of the old downtown Presbyterian Church was placed in the belfry of the new eastside church. The bell was bought in the 1850s at a cost of $500 and for many years was the only bell in town and rang for fires as well as church services.

The now photograph shows a view of the old church today which is located at 17 South Richards Street. Considered a local landmark, the old Central Presbyterian Church is part of the Jacob Henry Estate today.

Besides the Central Presbyterian Church, the Jacob Henry Estate also includes the original home that once was the residence of railroad tycoon Jacob Henry. The home and church are located in a district on the east side of Joliet that was once called “Silk Stocking Row” because it was populated by families of wealth and influence. Today, the Renaissance Revival mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Joliet Relay for Life clocks in at three decades

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – “Thirty Years Strong” was the theme at the Joliet 2015 Relay for Life, held Saturday at Memorial Stadium and sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

As a longtime supporter of Relay for Life, Joliet resident and Will County Executive Larry Walsh spent many years at these events walking and donating to help others battling with cancer. One year ago, Walsh fell victim to the disease.

“The doctor told me I had stage three prostate cancer, and then he said, ‘We are going to fight this and cure you,’ ” Walsh said. “I had blood tests, biopsies, and then my prostate was removed.”

Walsh spoke at Saturday’s opening ceremonies, urging people to get regular checkups for early detection. He also referenced how ironic it was that “today, June 6, is the 71-year anniversary of the invasion of Normandy, when troops went in to get rid of the enemy, just like we are doing here today, to get rid of cancer.”

Staci Calvert, senior director of Relay for Life in Illinois, said this year, the Joliet Relay for Life included 15 more teams than last year, with donation projections nearing the $175,000 mark.

“To be honest, it’s the volunteers that make this event successful each year,” Calvert said. “They really make people feel like it’s a place where they should be.”

The “Clerks for the Cure” team was busy with face paint under its tent. Mary Cromer sat at a table painting a purple survivor ribbon on the arm of friend Pat Regis. Regis survived a stint with melanoma skin cancer in 2010, and has been cancer-free since her surgery.

Unfortunately, on July 28, 2010, her husband John Regis lost his two-year battle with lung cancer. “He was a great guy. He had a great smile and would give you the shirt off of his back,” Regis said. “We walk today in remembrance of him.”

Joliet resident Claudia Krause sat with her team, Courtney’s Crusaders, mostly composed of family, talking about their years with Relay for Life.

Krause’s niece, Jenny Maltis, remembered how the group started. “My aunt Claudia saw a sign for the event 12 years ago, registered all of us and handed out the packets at a family get-together,” Maltis said.

“Our team fundraises, trying to win the trophy for the highest earner they give out at the end of the day,” Maltis said.

“That year, most of us stayed home because my mom was in a coma in hospice. We all said our goodbyes and she passed

away, and at the same time, I received a text from the relay that our team won the trophy.”

Maltis and her cousins, Cassie Krause and Kate Ross, said the team raised more than $21,000 this year, earning it the 2015 trophy for highest earner.

They said the relay has become a battle between siblings and cousins, to see who can raise the most money.

“Our family is known for this event,” Cassie Krause said. “I have been receiving

donations from people I went to school with back in eighth grade, friends, parents of the children I teach and so on. It’s something we can do to help in a helpless situation.”

Claudia Krause offered advice for those battling with cancer.

“Go out with friends and family, go to the grocery store, just be a regular human being,” she said. “When you do normal things, you feel normal. Don’t baby yourself.”

Residents picket proposed gas station

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – More than 20 residents of the Hunt Club subdivision spent Sunday afternoon picketing at the southwest corner of Route 52 and River Road, carrying signs that said, “Say NO to Lenny’s Gas & Wash.”

Residents complained about the potential for increased truck traffic on River Road, a planned car wash, and the proximity of the site to Hunt Club homes at a village Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Wednesday, when a site plan for the proposed gas station on the corner was unveiled.

But the commission voted 7-1 to recommend approval of the project to the Village Board.

“We have kids and people out jogging all the time and there is already so much congestion,” resident Ruth Gabor said. “This will also cause issues with Shorewood’s water supply.”

As presented to the Planning and Zoning Commission, the proposal included conditional uses for a gas station, car wash and drive-thru on one lot and two drive-thrus on

future lots of the 20-acre property.

The plan also included three diesel pump stations, two for utility vehicles and trucks, located halfway between the Hunt Club homes and Route 52.

“Our goal in the short term [for the protest] is to communicate that the village contains a large amount of residents that are opposed to this specific project in this specific location,” resident Larry Jakaitis said.

Gabor said the traffic issues on River Road were already bad enough that Hunt Club residents have a hard time getting out of the neighborhood to head north on River Road.

Jakaitis also pointed out a car wash could exacerbate water shortage issues the village could face in the future.

Village officials discussed the potential the shortage earlier this year during a push to pass a referendum granting Shorewood home-rule status and raising the sales tax rate to pay for a potential pipeline extension to Lake Michigan as an alternate water source.

“But this was never going to be a truck stop.”

Chapman said he didn’t agree with some of the other concerns residents had, including with the car wash.

“Nobody has been asked to not use water in the village of Shorewood because we’re not running dry now,” Chapman said.

Chapman said it was important to remember that Route 52 and Route 59 are the village’s two main economic corridors.

“I don’t think the answer is to say goodbye to Lenny’s Gas and Wash altogether,” he said.

Lockport maintains strong bond credit rating

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The city of Lockport has maintained its bond credit rating, making it less expensive to borrow money for city projects.

Last year, Lockport’s credit rating from Standard and Poor’s increased from AA to AA+. The credit agency evaluates an organization’s ability to meet financial obligations.

City officials were informed recently they kept that rating,

which they take as sign of how the area has prospered.

“We’re literally just kind of taking the opportunity where we have a good economy,” City Administrator Ben Benson said. “Our economy is growing at a faster rate than others.”

Before rising to AA, the city’s rating was at AA-.

Standard & Poor’s cited strong management and good financial policies in maintaining the credit rating, Benson said. The rating is the highest a municipality such as Lockport

can achieve, as it is non-home rule. The only higher rating would be AAA+, he said.

Benson said municipalities with a population of less than 25,000 cannot be home rule unless they pass a referendum.

Home rule communities have the authority to adopt new revenues sources, he said. This allows them achieve a potentially higher credit rating.

Lisa Heglund, Lockport finance director, said city officials have made good financial decisions by not spending

excessively and showing developers the city is willing to work with them. The city has worked on business park development and those projects help raise overall assessed property values, she said.

“We’re slowly moving out of the recession without moving too fast,” Heglund said.

Heglund said the credit rating will help with the bond Lockport seeks for the city’s Capital Improvement Plan, which would cover less than 10 percent of the total expenses

included in the plan.

City officials have planned to seek small bonds to help pay for the plan to revamp infrastructure citywide.

“It’s just a small portion of expenses we’re incurring,” she said about the bond.

Heglund said the rating is a reflection of the City Council working together and the city moving forward.

“It’s a lot of decisions they made lately that reflects in the bond rating achieved,” she said.

Rialto announces lineup for 2015-16 season

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Randy Green, general manager of the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, encourages classic rock fans to attend Classic Albums’ Live performance in October.

These Ontario-based musicians recreate Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Chronicle, Vol. 1 note by exact note.

“It’s a way for people to experience in a live concert the music of their youth as original classic artists performed it, even though some of the musicians no longer tour,” Green said.

He hopes to make the appearance of Classic Albums Live an annual event.

“This group of musicians are very exceptional,” Green said. “They do such a wide variety.”

The lineup for the coming 2015-16 season at the Rialto is so broad, Green said, that people of any age and interest will find shows that appeal to them.

Downtown Joliet transforms into New Orleans North Friday

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Masquerade masks, bead necklaces and Cajun and creole food will line downtown Joliet’s streets Friday as the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry kicks off summer with the fourth annual New Orleans North.

The 21-and-over festival will feature live bands, street entertainment, beer tents and a food court.

“We create a New Orleans feel downtown,” Chamber President Mary Jaworski said.

“There’s magnificent, New Orleans-style of food, except for

the pizza.”

Jaworski said this year organizers expect 6,000 people at the festival.

“The first year we were praying for 1,000 people, but 2,500 people showed up,” she said.

Festivities include performances by Four Star Brass Band, Blind Whiskey and performers such as music producer John Condron, hula hoop acrobats and dancers, a stilt walker, psychic and more.

Big Fish Grille and BigBash Caterers, Parmesans Wood Stone Pizza, the Joliet Police Department and Joliet Junior College are some of the cooks for the evening. Cover charge

for the event is $5 pre-sale and $10 at the door. A percentage of the proceeds will go to the United Way of Will County.

Supporters say civics education bill needed Lack leads to disengagement in democracy

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – State legislators have taken their last step to making a civics education a high school graduation requirement It’s a move one supporter said is needed because the subject has taken a backseat to other school subjects, despite being vital for democratic engagement.

House Bill 4025, which proposes requiring at least one semester of civics for graduation, was passed May 30 by both houses of the state Legislature and will need approval by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Several educators from area high school districts have said the bill would be unnecessary for them, as they already offer civics in their courses. But Shawn Healy, a Robert R. McCormick Foundation civic learning and engagement scholar, said the legislation is needed for those school districts that don’t require it.

Healy chaired the task force that examined the state of civics education in Illinois. In a random sample survey of 5 percent of Illinois high schools, the task force found roughly 60 percent of high schools require students to pass a civics or government course, compared with more than 90 percent of students nationally.

“Really, if you look back on this historically, on why we founded public schools in this country, it was to prepare young people for their roles as citizens in our democracy,” he said.

Lack of civics emphasis

Healy said the lack of focus on civics education has been a national trend over the past decade, particularly with No Child Left Behind, a 2001 federal law that emphasized standardized reading and math testing.

“We’ve seen, really, a marginalization of subjects outside of that, and civics in particular,” Healy said. “It’s been very dramatic in the elementary grades, but we’ve seen it across the spectrum.”

Tim Reilly, Lincoln-Way High School District 210 curriculum assistant superintendent, said he knows what drives education in general is assessments. When students were taking the Prairie State Achievement Exam, discontinued last year, they were tested on reading, writing, math and science.

“If that’s our scoreboard, things like civics can be pushed aside, but that’s not healthy and we try to fight that trend,” Reilly said.

Lincoln-Way in particular has been careful to not downplay civics education for students, he said.

A big win

Healy said he hopes that through the legislation, students receive instruction on government institutions, focus on current and controversial civic issues, engage in community service learning and participate in simulations of the democratic process.

With some variations across the state and nation, students from wealthier families and school districts tend to receive a better civics education. He said there is a huge gap in the quality of that education across race, ethnicity and social class.

That gap also is reflected in people’s engagement in democracy, he said. He was happy to see bipartisan support for the bill.

“I think it’s a big win,” he said.

D-86 hires assistant superintendent

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ankhe Bradley has joined Joliet Public Schools District 86 as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

The Board of School Inspectors approved her hiring at its June 3 meeting. Bradley previously worked for Rockford Public Schools District 205, where she worked as assistant superintendent since 2013, school officials said. She also served as an assistant superintendent and principal for Harvey Public School District 152.

At the meeting, Bradley thanked the board for entrusting her with the position.

“I look forward to meeting with all of you and serving the community and the district,” she said.

Bradley is working on a doctorate of educational administration from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. According to her NIU Student Scholar profile, Bradley received her bachelor’s degree in English

and master’s degree in teaching from Hampton University in Virginia.

Before becoming a school administrator, she worked as a kindergarten teacher.

Board approves other administrative changes

The board also approved several promotions and personnel changes, school officials said.

Tony Villagomez will become principal of Isaac Singleton Elementary after serving as interim principal since September. Christopher Latting was promoted from assistant principal at M.J. Cunningham Elementary to principal at Thomas Jefferson Elementary.

Latting will replace Araceli Ordaz, who will become principal of Pershing Elementary. Brenda Reiter-Gorman, the current principal of that school, will be a principal at Farragut Elementary.

Eleise Medina was hired as student services coordinator.

All appointments will be effective July 1.

Bill supporters, opponents

Among state lawmakers in both houses, 127 supported House Bill 4025, while 36 did not. State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, who supported the bill, said it would give a new emphasis to civics education, which would influence young people to be more active in government.

“To me, we need to teach kids why our democracy is valuable,” McGuire said.

“We want to motivate young people to register and vote.

We want them to be active in political campaigns and maybe one day run for office.”

State Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, voted against the bill because she heard from school districts in the 37th House District – including Lincoln-Way – that it would be another unfunded mandate. She said she doesn’t think civics education has been de-emphasized over the years.

“I personally have not observed it,” she said. “My school districts didn’t think it was a need for them.”

Denler didn’t return calls Thursday and Friday.

Residents have gained traction with their case. They convinced the Wheatland Township, Plainfield and Oswego governing boards to forward

letters of objection to the rezoning request to the Will County Board.

The case is set to go Tuesday morning to the Will County Land Use Committee.

Kavanagh said the letters of objection and any recommendations against the property rezoning by the Land Use Committee still are just recommendations. And the Will County Board can choose to go with or against those recommendations during a scheduled hearing June 18.

WHEATLAND TOWNSHIP – The attorney for a prospective property owner in unincorporated Wheatland Township said plans continue for an asphalt and concrete paving business despite resident opposition.

Attorney Richard Kavanagh said he wasn’t at previous village and township meetings concerning the rezoning of 10 acres of property at 25657 W. Route 30 from an agricultural to an I-1 Industrial Zoning District.

But client David Denler continues to pursue the project.

“It allows what Denler wants to do on this parcel,”

Kavanagh said. “The fact of the matter is this is probably as good a use or a better use than you’re going to find for this particular piece of land.”

Denler, a Mokena businessman, has applied for the zoning change so he can expand operations of an asphalt and concrete paving company on the bank-owned property. The sale of the property to Denler is contingent on changing the property’s zoning from agricultural to industrial.

But residents and some local officials oppose the property’s rezoning, which is surrounded to the north, west and south by residential properties. They argue that the rezoning could open up the property to uses that would increase traffic along an already busy

Minooka High thespian wins state award VIEWS Kris Stadalsky Minooka High School’s Ben Dow learned to fly this year for his role as Bert in the spring musical “Mary Poppins.”

That play, which had just been released for high school musicals, was a big challenge for the school as well as a big success.

Dow’s role, as well as the other Minooka High School actors and the set design team, all faced big challenges. The production required learning to fly with harnesses, sets that needed to rotate 360 degrees, magic acts and numerous difficult dance numbers.

Meeting the challenges associated with his part was one of the reasons Dow believes he earned one of 24 spots as a finalist in the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards.

Twelve Illinois high school

boys and 12 girls were selected to attend a day-long workshop June 1 at Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place in Chicago. Actors from all over Illinois participated in workshops with theatre professionals, including Brad Musgrove, associate choreographer of the musical “Pippin.”

After a long, hard day of learning their parts in a group number from “Pippin,” participants performed for judges to earn one of two spots – one actor and one actress – to represent Illinois at the Jimmy Awards, the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, in New York City.

While Dow didn’t make the top spot, he’s honored to have been chosen as a finalist and given the chance to work alongside theatre professionals and other top notch actors in the state.

Having a coach like Musgrove was a great experience, Dow said.

Dow, who will be a junior this fall, is the first Minooka

High School student to be selected for the award, now in its fourth year. Students selected are usually juniors or seniors, and Dow was chosen as a sophomore.

The awards serve as an annual national celebration of outstanding achievement in musical theatre performance by high school students, according to Broadway in Chicago.

Dow first heard about the awards last year when he was in “West Side Story” as a freshman at Ben Dow Minooka High.

So he made it his goal to improve his acting techniques and make it to the state level.

“Getting in was the first step,” he said.

Armed with the knowledge he took away from the workshop, he intends to up his game and become a national winner next year.

“Now I know what the judges want and hopefully know what to do to win,” he said. “It shows I can get to the level I’m striving for, but I also need to get better.”

Getting selected for the state award is a nice feather in the cap for the Minooka High School musical theatre department and for the community, said Dow’s mother, Amy Dow. Other area state winners were Tyler Rodgers of Coal City High School and Alexis

“They adored her,” Jackie said. “I hope they follow in her footsteps and be half the woman she was.”

Although her teaching career spanned more than 30 years, Char said Pearl remembered every child and parent.

In the early days, Pearl taught junior high, but preferred first grade, where Char spent most of her three decades.

“At that age, they say what’s from their heart – good, bad or otherwise,” Char said of why Pearl doted on that grade. “They’re not trying to be cool or impress anybody.”

When Jackie Carey of Joliet, Pearl’s only grandchild, was a child, she would spend an occasional day in the classroom with Pearl. Jackie said she colored what the other children colored and then ate lunch in the school cafeteria with Pearl.

“I felt special being there with her,” Jackie said.

Their bond continued to grow as Jackie grew, especially after Pearl returned to

JOLIET – Mary Lou Mantia of Morris, who retired from Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C five years ago, recalled a heavy snowfall soon after she started teaching for the district in 1974.

Outside shoveling was fellow teacher Pearl Heeg, who lived in Seneca at the time. The janitor, Mary Lou said, was recovering from a heart attack, so Pearl grabbed a shovel and went to work.

But that was typical Pearl, who Mary Lou said was the most generous and caring person she ever met.

“She helped Pete shovel the entire walk for the school, so the kids and teachers could get in without any problem,” Mary Lou said. “She didn’t do it for the glory or the thanks.

She did it to help Pete.”

Pearl treated everyone in similar fashion. She spoke kindly, never raising her voice, and was always poised to help, whether a person needed money or advice or if students needed a winter coat or life skills, Mary Lou said.

When Mary Lou moved into her home, Pearl was there, hanging drapery and blinds, staining woodwork and bringing over house-

warming meals. When Mary Lou went on vacation, Pearl doggie-sat for her.

Pearl gave without asking for anything in return and had the most infectious laugh, Mary Lou said. No one ever saw Pearl without a smile.

Mary Lou said she never will forget Pearl’s example when Mary Lou was a new teacher.

“She took me under her wing and treated me like family. That’s something rare for a person to do,” Mary Lou said.

“She was an excellent friend.

She will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Char Kocik of Lockport, Pearl’s only child, said Pearl, the second youngest of 11 children who had lost her mother when she was about 14, adopted everyone she met.

When Char’s mother-in-law died, Pearl became Nana to the younger members of that family, Char said.

“My mom was a magnet to people,” Char said.

Pearl also treated each person she met with equal respect – housekeepers, maître d’s and hotel vice presidents.

Pearl enjoyed conversing with people – hearing, but also remembering, the details of their lives.

“She truly cared about what she asked you,” Char said, “and she truly cared about the answer.”

Randy loved fishing, camping, and watching football, ... especially The Ohio State Buckeyes and one of his favorite places to visit was Wisconsin. He will be dearly missed by family and friends but never forgotten.

Darcy was living in Chicago, loving life in her Marina Tower apartment.

She was free spirited and lived each day to the fullest with no regrets. Darcy was known for her love and zest of music, theatre and drama. She held various leading roles in local theatrical plays. She enjoyed yoga and was interested in becoming a yoga instructor. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was always the center of attention. Darcy was the life of every party. Her passion for music introduced her to Bonnaroo, which she was scheduled to attend this week. Darcy had a flare for fashion and her closet was a testament to that; especially her shoes, which would be the envy of Carrie Bradshaw. With the love of her family and friends, Darcy leaves behind many treasured memories and stories that will live forever in our hearts.

life. Jack was the president of the Will County Farm Bureau and was on the Will DuPage FS Board. He was also a board member of the Illinois Valley Workshop in Morris, IL. Jack considered farming a hobby and a part of his life, it was not a job to him and he loved spending time in the fields teaching his son how to carry on his legacy.

Jack also enjoyed going golfing and playing euchre with his family and close friends. He enjoyed his life to the fullest and will be truly missed.

After his retirement, golf became his “full time” job. He was extremely proud of his 3 holes-in-one. He was also a skilled carpenter and built many family homes in his spare time.

Richard loved the Lord with all his heart~~always asking “What would Jesus do?” in all matters of his life.

His love of family was first and foremost to him.

Czech writer, anti-communist dissident Ludvik Vaculik dies 15 The Associated Press PRAGUE – Ludvik Vaculik, an author, journalist and anti-communist dissident whose “Two Thousand Words” manifesto became a key document of the 1968 Prague Spring reform movement that contributed to the Kremlin’s decision to invade Czechoslovakia, has died.

He was 88.

Czech public radio and TV, and daily newspaper Lidove Noviny, to which he contributed a weekly column “The Last Word,” all announced Vaculik’s death Saturday. No further details were immediately given.

Born July 23, 1926, in the eastern town of Brumov, Vaculik supported the Communist regime early in his life and became a Communist Party member. But soon realizing the totalitarian nature of the system, he became disappointed with it. After a fierce critical speech he delivered at a congress of

Czechoslovak writers in 1967, he was expelled from the party.

Banned by the hard-line regime established after the 1968 invasion, Vaculik contributed to drafting the Charter 77 human rights manifesto together with other leading dissidents, including Vaclav Havel, who later would become Czech president after the fall of communism in 1989. Vaculik was in charge of an underground publishing house that released hundreds of books by banned authors.

His major books include “The Guinea Pigs;” a diary-novel, “The Czech Dreambook;” and a chronicle, “A Cup Of Coffee with My Interrogator.”

Abortion numbers fall in Illinois, mirroring national trend

CHICAGO – The annual number of abortions in Illinois is continuing to fall, reflecting a national trend and reaching the lowest point in a decades-long decline.

The latest figures show that there were 40,750 surgical abortions performed in Illinois in 2013, which is 2.6 percent fewer than the 41,859 performed in 2010, Illinois Department of Public Health data show. The numbers do not include abortions induced by prescription-only pills containing the drug mifepristone, which is also known as RU-486.

Illinois plans to include pill-induced abortions in its next report. The Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights, recently estimated that medical abortions in 2011 accounted for 23 percent of all abortions nationwide.

Women traveling from other states for abortions in Illinois raised the totals by about 3,000 abortions each year. Illinois has less restrictive abortion laws than neighboring states and shares borders with Missouri and Indiana, two states among the most aggressive in passing abortion restrictions.

Catholic Charities to close shelters over funding questions

CHICAGO – Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago plans to close four facilities next month because of “uncertainty” over state and city funding.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that two are family shelters and two are child development centers.

Report: Ex-speaker Hastert quietly tried to boost income

WASHINGTON – Former House speaker Dennis Hastert looked for ways to increase his income around the time he is accused of paying someone to stay quiet

about decades-old misconduct, according to a former business associate.

J. David John told The New York Times that he asked a financial adviser in 2010 how investments could be arranged to yield more cash and that he inquired on Hastert’s behalf, without identifying him. John said he doesn’t know whether the attempt to set up an annuity relates to the payoffs Hastert is accused of making.

Hastert is charged with evading bank regulations by withdrawing hundreds of thousands of dollars in smaller amounts and lying about why. The indictment says Hastert agreed in 2010 to pay $3.5 million to a person to compensate for and conceal past misconduct. He is scheduled to appear at his arraignment on the two charges in federal court in

Chicago on Tuesday. If convicted, he could face a maximum fiveyear sentence and a $250,000 fine on each charge.

Chicago cops report officer-involved shooting by trails

CHICAGO – Chicago police have arrested a man in connection with a police-involved shooting near a newly-opened elevated trail system on the city’s northwest side.

The Chicago Tribune reported that a man was standing not far from the Bloomingdale Trail early Sunday when he allegedly pulled out a weapon and pointed it at officers. Police said an officer

fired in response, but no one was injured.

A suspect was taken into custody, but there were no immediate charges. Police found a gun in the area and were guarding a cordoned-off house early Sunday.

Section of trail through Chicago’s south suburbs opens

PALOS HEIGHTS – A 13-mile section of a trail built along the Cal-Sag Channel and Calumet River in Chicago’s south suburbs is now open.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin’s office said he helped open the western section of the Cal-Sag Trail with a ribbon-cutting on Saturday.

Durbin said much of the expense of the trail was paid for with $22.7 million in federal funding.

POMONA, California – The robots drove, walked through rubble, climbed stairs, turned valves and sometimes fell, amid cheers and groans from a crowd of thousands at the Fairplex in Pomona, California.

After three years of research, development and an obstacle course of competition, a South Korean team on Saturday won the three-year and $3.5-million U.S. contest to create a robot capable of responding to disaster conditions that are unsafe for humans.

Team Kaist of Daejeon took home $2-million in first-place prize money for its DRC-Hubo robot, which successfully completed eight tasks related to disaster response in less than 45 minutes at the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals.

The contest by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency started after the 2011 Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan. Workers couldn’t vent hydrogen from the overloaded reactors without enduring excess radiation. The idea was to create a robot that could do such important emergency tasks in the future and get to the problem site.

Cave to provide clues to Black Hills history

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota – The National Park Service is beginning to excavate the mouth of an unexplored cave in the Black Hills of South Dakota,

and researchers believe it could help broaden our understanding of how the region’s climate has changed over thousands of years.

A park service worker found Persistence Cave in 2004 on the grounds of Wind Cave National Park, in western South Dakota, but the agency kept it quiet, partly to prevent amateur spelunkers from trying to explore well-preserved site.

On Monday, a team of scientists led by East Tennessee State University professor Jim Mead will begin unearthing the entrance of the cave, hauling out bags of sediment and animal bones to be carefully analyzed.

Cross-county bike trip aims to inspire

BOSTON – Seven students from Boston-area colleges are cycling across America, stopping in many rural towns to get kids interested in science through hands-on workshops.

The project called Spokes brings together students from Harvard University and MIT on a trip that’s an endurance challenge, road trip and teaching experience.

The 4,000-mile route includes a dozen stops to host workshops that let youths in the area launch model rockets, build robots and program computers.

Since it started in 2013, the project has targeted communities where schools might not have resources for flashy science experiments. The group says it wants to inspire students to think about careers in science.

Governor: 2 inmates must have taken days to pull off escape The ASSOCIATED PRESS DANNEMORA, NEW YORK – Two murderers who used power tools to escape from prison must have taken days to cut through steel walls and pipes and break through the bricks, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday as a $100,000 reward was posted for information leading to their capture.

Authorities were investigating how the inmates obtained the power tools they used in the “Shawshank Redemption”-style breakout over the weekend.

“It was a sophisticated plan,” Cuomo said. “It took a period of time, no doubt, to execute.”

David Sweat, 34, was serving a sentence of life without parole for the 2002 killing of a sheriff’s deputy. Richard Matt, 48, had been sentenced to 25 years to life for kidnapping, killing and dismembering his former boss in 1997.

“These are killers. They are murderers,” the gover-

nor said. “There’s never been a question about the crimes they committed. They are now on the loose, and our first order of business is apprehending them.”

Officials gave no details on how the men managed to avoid detection while cutting their way out. “They had to be heard,” Cuomo told ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

After the search is over, “we’ll go through the exact details of what they did and how they did it to ensure this never happens again,” Cuomo said later.

Authorities set up roadblocks and brought in bloodhounds and helicopters. Hundreds of law enforcement officers fanned out around the prison, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border, following up on dozens of tips.

“They’re going through garages, sheds, homes, stores,” said Dannemora local historian Peter Light, who worked at the prison as a correction officer for 31 years and now runs the prison museum inside the

facility.

But authorities acknowledged they did not have a good idea where the convicts could be.

Dubbed “Little Siberia” by locals, the prison houses nearly 3,000 inmates, guarded by about 1,400 correction officers. Surrounded by farmland and forests, the prison is only about a 45-minute drive by car to Montreal.

Cuomo said the escapees may have crossed into Canada or headed to another state.

“This is a crisis situation for the state,” he said. “These are dangerous men capable of committing grave crimes again.”

Prison officials found the inmates’ beds inside the 150-year-old Clinton Correctional Facility stuffed with clothes on Saturday morning in an apparent attempt to fool guards making their rounds.

On a cut steam pipe, the prisoners left a taunting note containing a crude Asian caricature and the words “Have a nice day.”

G-7 leaders signal united front on Russia sanctions

By DAVID McHUGH and DAVID RISING The Associated Press ELMAU, Germany – German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday she expects a meeting of the Group of Seven industrialized democracies to produce a “united signal” that sanctions against Russia can be softened only if a February peace accord for Ukraine is fully implemented.

Even before the issue was brought to the table, most of the leaders already had expressed their support for the idea.

This year’s meeting of the leading industrialized democracies was the second in a row without Russia, which was ejected from what was the G-8 last year over its actions in Ukraine. Even with President Vladimir Putin absent, Russia was prominent in the leaders’ minds as they gathered in the Bavarian Alps.

Merkel and U.S. President Barack Obama agreed during a pre-summit bilateral meeting that the duration of sanctions imposed upon Moscow should be “clearly linked to Russia’s full im-

plementation” of the Minsk peace accord agreed in February, the White House said in a statement. Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, another summit participant, were central to drawing up that accord.

Later, Merkel stressed anew in an interview with Germany’s public ZDF TV that sanctions are not an end in themselves and they “can be dispensed with when the conditions under which they were introduced are no longer there and the problems are resolved.”

She said that “we have a chance if everyone makes an effort – that is to some extent in Russia’s hands and, of course, in Ukraine’s.”

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Kiev before heading to the summit in Germany and pledged to make sure that “solidarity with Ukraine” also was on the agenda for the next G-7, which is being held in Japan, said his spokesman Yasuhisa Kawamura.

This year, he said, Japan’s main goal is that all sides abide by the Minsk agreement.

“That is our goal and for that ... all G-7 leaders should

show a common approach,” Kawamura said.

Heading into the talks, British Prime Minister David Cameron said he would push for Europe to stand firm with sanctions against Russia even though some countries – especially cashstrapped Greece – were suffering economically because of declining investment and tourists from Russia.

“It has an impact on all countries in terms of putting sanctions on another country,” Cameron said. “Britain hasn’t let our pre-eminence in financial services get in the way of taking a robust response to Russian-backed aggression and I don’t think other countries should either.”

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who also visited Kiev before heading to Bavaria, has been “strongly advocating” for the G-7 leaders and other allies to maintain the pressure and sanctions on Russia, said his spokesman, Stephen Lecce.

He added that Harper “stands ready to impose further measures against the Putin regime if Moscow refuses to halt its aggressive behavior.”

CONCORD, N.H. – Police officers and outlaw biker gangs often stand on common ground. Both attract the young and adventurous who value order, discipline and brotherhood. And on weekends tens of thousands of cops routinely trade their cruisers and badges for choppers and club colors.

The bond doesn’t mean a free pass for criminal motorcycle gangs, but even some within law enforcement worry that too many officers believe bikers are just misunderstood Robin Hoods. And empathy from officers who emulate or even aspire to the outlaw life can put police or the public at risk, gang experts warn.

“They’re supposed to be putting them in jail, not schmoozing with them, not socializing with them,” said Charlie Fuller, a retired special agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. “That’s a no-brainer to me. You have a huge security issue for the whole department. Here’s a cop that’s hanging with them socially. What’s he telling them? What are they asking him?”

The relationship between police and criminal biker gangs – dubbed Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs or 1 percenters because they are said to represent the fraction of motorcycle enthusiasts who operate outside the law – came into focus following the May 17 shootout involving rival gang members, including a retired San Antonio police officer, that left nine people dead in Waco, Texas.

Police on hand at the meeting fired at least some of the shots once violence erupted, but a photo showing some of the dozens the arrested bikers sitting calmly on curbs using cellphones under seemingly nonchalant police guard earned the ire of critics. Some wondered if police went easy on the bikers.

A 2014 ATF report said biker gangs count working police

officers, firefighters and 911 workers as members. The report details a California Highway Patrol dispatcher listening to the scanner and tipping off her husband, a Hells Angel prospect, that the police were headed to a fight he was involved in. The husband took off before the cops arrived.

In another instance, the dispatcher ran a license plate for undercover agents working on a weapons sting against her husband.

In New York City, Detective Wojciech Braszczok is on trial, charged with joining a mass of angry motorcyclists – but not a gang – who assaulted an SUV driver during a wild highway chase in 2013. Braszczok said he didn’t intervene because he thought it could compromise his unrelated undercover work.

The gulf between outlaw biker gang and motorcycle club is vast, and the great majority of the law enforcement or veterans clubs perform community services year round, such as delivering toys at Christmas or the Patriot Guard Riders, who provide a rumbling motorcade – and a buffer against protesters – at the funerals of fallen soldiers.

Still, Laconia police Chief Chris Adams, whose New Hampshire town will attract hundreds of thousands of bikers to its annual Motorcycle Week starting on June 13, said he has seen some officers instantly transform when they’re wearing club colors instead of their uniform.

“Some of them won’t look at you or talk to you,” Adams said. He called the fuzzy lines between police and bikers a “valid concern.”

Adams said his department maintains a “working relationship” with the region’s dominant motorcycle gang, the Hells Angels, to address problems big and small.

“I think it can be helpful,” Adams said. “It can be as trivial as a parking problem. Rather than towing 50 bikes, ‘Hey, can you get these bikes out of here?’”

The Joliet area will have an impressive four representatives in baseball and softball supersectionals Monday.

Nothing will be easy for any of them, but our area has a tendency to get teams through to the state semifinals.

Providence baseball will take on O’Fallon in the 6 p.m.

Class 4A supersectional that has been moved from the University of Illinois in Champaign to the Corn Crib in Normal, home of the Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League. That’s because Illinois is hosting Vanderbilt in an NCAA Division I super regional, and Game 2 is scheduled for Monday.

The Celtics’ opponent, O’Fallon, eliminated Minooka, 6-0, in Saturday’s championship game of the Class 4A Alton Sectional. The Indians fell victim to what is supposed to be O’Fallon’s No. 2 pitcher, Brad Harrison, who threw a two-hitter.

Imagine what No. 1 is like.

Providence will find out.

Chris Holba beat Edwardsville, 3-1, in the sectional semifinals. Edwardsville entered the game 35-1 and ranked No 1 in the state.

Actually, that was the second time this season Holba pitched very well against Edwardsville. He also worked seven strong innings in a regular-season game O’Fallon lost to the Tigers, 2-1, in 11 innings. He allowed seven hits and one earned run in 14 total innings against Edwardsville.

The last couple seasons, however, Providence seems to be a different animal at playoff time. The Celtics continue to get strong pitching themselves and come through in the clutch when a loss means you are going home. This one should be a dandy.

So should the 7:30 p.m.

MORRIS – Sunday morning, the rain was coming down.

That didn’t deter many basketball players from gathering in downtown Morris for the annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 Tournament. The play pressed on between downpours; and while it may not have been ideal conditions, the players still enjoyed themselves.

“It was a lot more fun today than yesterday,” said 8-yearold Griffin Zweeres of Morris, a member of the Runnin’ Renegades. “It was fun playing in the rain, and it wasn’t as hot.

The ball was slippery. That made it harder to play.”

The rules were tweaked, as the games went to 10 points instead of 15, and the next games started immediately after the previous ones rather than allowing any warmup time. If neither team got to 10, whichever team was leading at the end of 15 minutes was declared the winner.

As usual for Gus Macker events, normal field goals counted for one point, and anything beyond what usually is the 3-point line counted for two points. On a shooting foul, the player could choose to attempt a two-point shot, and his or her team would get the ball.

Fans of area basketball this past winter were in for a treat as reigning Morris Herald-News Players of the Year Austin Patterson and Julie Jurasits were playing, as well as plenty of other area standouts.

From last year’s Morris boys varsity team, Griffin Sobol, Jacob Brady, Evan Bjelland, Jordan Miracle, Jackson Shannon and Jake Jurasits were on hand, while Leona Burton, Mya Shannon, Jessica Ponce and Jessica Jurak were among the Morris girls players on the courts.

Dwight tied it at 8 before Patterson made it 9-8. Dwight missed a shot, and Team Hansen got the rebound, needing just a basket to win.

With Dwight sending two of its defenders to Patterson, he found Hansen under the basket, who passed to a wideopen Sobol, who put in the winning shot.

Slammers get swept by Evansville

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After giving up a combined 17 runs and 29 hits to the Frontier League’s East Division leader Evansville in the first two games of their weekend series, the Joliet Slammers had to minimize those numbers in Sunday’s finale.

And although the Slammers equaled their run total from the previous two nights – and held the Otters below their marks for runs and hits from the first two games – it still wasn’t good enough to avoid a sweep.

Evansville rallied from an early 2-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the third and two in the fourth to help it claim a 7-4 victory before 990 fans at Silver Cross Field.

“It just seems to be one or two big innings in each game, and if we can stay out of those, we’ll be alright,” Joliet manager Jeff Isom said.

“We have to find ways to limit extra runs from getting in.

We had a 2-0 lead going into the third inning, then threw a ball away and had a couple of

walks, and things came apart.

But we kept fighting, and I liked our effort.

“It’s just too bad that we got put into that hole right away and went down by those runs, so we had to chip away. But Evansville has a very solid lineup, and the middle of their order is very good, and their pitching staff complements the rest of their team. We’ve seen some good teams in this league – like Rockford, Southern Illinois and Evansville – and they’re all very good, but I’d give the edge to Evansville since they do a lot of things very well.”

The game started out well for the Slammers (8-13), as they capitalized on the initial scoring opportunity. In the bottom of the first, Phil Bates (2 for 4) got a two-out double to right, and Russell Moldenhauer (3 for 4) followed with an RBI single to left.

An inning later, Adam Giacalone took second after his slow roller was fielded and then thrown into the bullpen. After Chris Matthews grounded out to advance the runner, Max Casper made it

a 2-0 game with a two-out infield hit.

But Evansville (15-6) bounced back with a four-run third inning to take the lead.

Jaime Del Valle reached on a dribbler in front of the plate, and Cory Urquhart followed with a single to center, and Kurt Wertz doubled to left to bring home one run.

Shayne Houck (2 for 4, 4 RBI) sent a bouncer to first, but the throw home was wild, allowing two more to come home. Houck later scored on Chris Sweeney’s hit to center.

The Otters scored two more runs in the fourth on Houck’s two-out double to left.

Evansville appeared likely to score again in the fifth inning after loading the bases with no outs. But after starter Aaron Vaughn got a strikeout, he was relieved by Kevin McNorton, who coaxed a bouncer back to the mound and started a 1-2-3 double play.

Joliet got a pair of runs back in the sixth inning.

Moldenhauer doubled into the left-field corner, then Alfredo Rodriguez got an RBI double down the left-field line.

After a wild pitch advanced the runner, Giacalone drove him in on an infield out.

Evansville starter Efrain Nieves exited with two outs in the seventh, and relievers Connor Little and Edgar Lopez, who got the save, didn’t yield a hit during the last 21⁄3 innings.

McNorton kept the Otters at bay through the eighth inning, but they picked up an insurance run in the ninth when Houck hit a home run to left. In his 42⁄3 innings of relief, he allowed only two hits while striking out five.

“I liked the way that McNorton came in and pitched tonight,” Isom said. “We got a big strikeout from Vaughn, and we know that Kevin is a ground ball pitcher, and if we could get the double play, that we get the momentum to go back to our side.

“He got us deep into the game and put up zeros, minus the home run late. He’s been one of our mainstays in the bullpen, a guy that we continue to rely on. You know when he goes out there, you have a good chance of having success.”

Indians lacked one phase of game vs. O’Fallon

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com BLOOMINGTON – Two of the three phases for Minooka on Saturday were capable of a win. The pitching of Joe Butler, Miguel Ruiz and Brad Van Asdlen was solid. The defense as a whole for the Indians kept them in the game as they turned a pair of double plays.

To win a baseball game, especially in postseason, all parts of the game – pitching, offense and defense – must be working together. In some games, a potent offense can overcome deficiencies in pitching and defense; in others, a strong pitching performance can offset a weaker offensive. But when two evenly matched teams are pitted

against each other, the team that can best combine the three usually will come out ahead.

Ironically, it was the offense – which was the impetus behind Wednesday’s sectional semifinal win over Normal West – that fell short against O’Fallon.

After losing, 6-5, to the Indians Wednesday, Normal West coach Chris Hawkins called Minooka “probably the best hitting team we have faced all year.” And in that game, he probably was right.

The Indians got at least one hit in every inning and finished with 10. Included were a pair of home runs by Jon Vesper, a triple by Cristian Sanchez and a double by Tyler Paulsen. Not only were the Indians getting hits, they were

getting extra bases. Plus, they only struck out once.

Those numbers turned around Saturday in a 6-0 loss to O’Fallon. Most of that was because of the performance of O’Fallon pitcher Brad Harrison. The big left-hander mixed an above-average fastball with a devastating slider that nearly was impossible to pick up. On top of that, he had pinpoint control in never walking a batter.

Minooka, which finished 23-14 and won 20 of its last 24 games, had several scoring chances early before Harrison found his groove. Hayden Laczynski led off the first inning reaching on an error, and Jake Null took Harrison to a full count before flying out to right. Harrison struck out the next two hitters to

get out of the inning. In the second, Cole Thompson singled with two outs, but Harrison ended the inning with a strikeout.

The best chance for Minooka came in the third when Jonny Butler led off with an opposite-field double to left-center. After a strikeout, Null bounced a ball in front of the plate, and the O’Fallon catcher could not pick it up, putting runners on first and third with one out. A Harrison pitch went in the dirt, allowing Null to reach second, but Harrison got a strikeout and a comebacker to get out of the inning.

Unfortunately for Minooka, that was their last baserunner, as Harrison struck out the next six Indians in the fourth and fifth innings.

CHICAGO BASEBALL ROUNDUP Cubs hand Nationals 8th loss in 10 games

WASHINGTON – Kris Bryant tripled, doubled, singled and scored twice Sunday as the Cubs sent the Washington Nationals to their eighth loss in 10 games, 6-3.

Jason Motte pitched a perfect ninth for his first save since 2012, when he led the NL with 42 for St. Louis before getting hurt. Closer Hector Rondon threw a perfect eighth – a day earlier, manager Joe Maddon said he might put the righthander in some lower-pressure situations to get settled.

Chris Coghlan and Starlin Castro both had two hits and two RBIs, helping the Cubs take three of four in the series. The Nationals fell out of the NL East lead, passed by the New York Mets.

Kyle Hendricks (2-2) went five innings, giving up three runs and six hits.

Samardzija struggles early, Sox lose to Tigers

CHICAGO – Jeff Samardzija got in trouble once again in the first inning, and managed to get out while allowing only one run. Later, the Tigers really tagged him.

Yoenis Cespedes and J.D. Martinez homered during a threerun sixth Sunday to power the Tigers past the White Sox, 6-4.

Samardzija (4-4) gave up six runs and 10 hits in 71⁄3 innings.

He has struggled badly in the first, permitting a majors-high 17 runs in the opening inning.

That inning, however, wasn’t why the Sox wound up dropping the three-game series.

“They put a couple over the fence. That was the difference,” Samardzija said. “We keep those in the park, get a couple outs there, it’s a different game.

That’s the story – two homers.”

After Tyler Collins’ RBI single put the Tigers ahead in the top of the first, Avisail Garcia hit a three-run homer in the bottom half. All of those Sox runs were unearned after first baseman Miguel Cabrera committed a two-out error.

The 6-foot-7 Bishop had a franchise-record 40 wins this season. He is 12-9 with a 2.20 goals-against average in the playoffs.

Vasilevskiy, who turns 21 in July, has made 19 appearances this year, counting the playoffs, but Cooper and the Lightning insist they are comfortable with him in goal.

Tampa Bay’s revolving door in goal and the free-wheeling pace of Game 2 made Kane’s blank scoresheet all the more surprising. It was only the second time that he failed to record a shot on goal in 112 career playoff games, according to STATS.

“It’s not a stat you like to see, for sure,” said Kane, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2013 for playoff MVP. “At the same time going into the next game, I’m not going to go in saying, ‘I need to get a shot here or there.’ I just go out and try to make the right play and worry about the results from there.”

Kane and Toews began the series on the same line after they helped the Hawks rally past the Ducks in the Western Conference finals. But coach Joel Quenneville broke up the duo near the end of Game 2 and likely will separate them again on Monday night, keeping at least one of the veteran scorers away from Tampa Bay’s top defensive pairing of Victor Hedman and Anton Stralman.

“I think that maybe changing those two guys on different lines will get us a little bit more depth and a little bit more balance, see how they can defend it,” Quenneville said.

That is the combined total for Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Steven Stamkos through two games of the Stanley Cup Final.

The biggest stars for the Blackhawks and Lightning are looking to break out with the deadlocked series shifting to the United Center on Monday night for Game 3.

Toews’ third-period assist in the Hawks’ 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday night was the 100th career playoff point for the captain – and his first of the final.

Kane, who played alongside Toews for much of the first two games, failed to register a shot on goal in Game 2. Stamkos, the captain of the Lightning, is scoreless in his last four games.

The winner of the series very well could be the team that gets one of those scorers going.

“I mean, as an offensive guy, you want to be helping produce, especially at this time of year,” Kane said. “But, you know, we said all along with our team, we don’t really care where the goals come from, as long as they’re coming from our team.”

While Toews, Kane and Stamkos have been shut down so far, the big question hanging over the Stanley Cup on Sunday was which goalie would be in net for Tampa Bay in Game 3. Even coach Jon Cooper said he wasn’t sure.

Ben Bishop left midway through the third period of Game 2. He returned for a brief stretch and then left for good. Andrei Vasilevskiy made five saves to help close out the series-tying win.

There has been no word from the Lightning on why Bishop departed. Cooper said he could be available for Game 3.

Oscar Levant, a pianist, composer, thespian and comedian who died in 1972, commented, “I once said cynically of a politician, ‘He’ll double cross that bridge when he comes to it.’”

It is great in bridge to have double the chance to make the opponents cross by getting home in your contract. This is especially true when they can see that you would have failed with a different line of play or defense.

In this deal, South is in four hearts.

West cashes his three spade winners, then shifts to a diamond. How should declarer continue?

South would have done well to rebid three no-trump. North would have had nine top tricks. But jumping to four hearts was hard to criticize (and he might have bid it on the first round).

Some pairs lead the queen from a suit headed by the top three honors, asking partner to signal count. That is not a bad idea.

South must avoid losing a minor-suit trick. At first glance, he seems to need the club finesse to work. But declarer has two chances to get home. He should win with dummy’s diamond ace, ruff a diamond in his hand, cash the heart ace, play a heart to dummy’s 10, and ruff another diamond.

Here, the king appears, so South draws trumps, crosses to dummy’s club ace, and discards his second club on the diamond queen. But if the diamond king does not drop, declarer runs his trumps, planning to fall back on the club finesse.

Yes, a club shift at trick four by West would have been fatal, but that was not obvious.

A person is considered to be in shock when he or she has low blood pressure and certain symptoms.

These symptoms indicate there is not enough blood flowing through the body to supply the brain and other organs.

Symptoms of shock can include: • Mental confusion • Anxiety or agitation/restlessness • Bluish lips and fingernails • Chest pain • Dizziness, lightheadedness or faintness • Pale, cool, clammy skin • Low or no urine output • Profuse sweating, moist skin • Rapid but weak pulse • Shallow breathing • Unconsciousness Shock requires emergency medical treatment.

The first priority is to get blood pressure back up to normal. This may be done by giving blood and fluids through a vein.

Blood-pressure-raising medicines may be administered.

They work by narrowing the small arteries or by strengthening the pumping action of the heart.

Anti-shock trousers can help.

They squeeze blood from the legs into the heart. Doctors also will give extra oxygen through a mask.

Once blood pressure is back to normal, doctors will shift their focus to treating whatever led to shock in the first place.

Dear Dr. K: What does it mean when someone “goes into shock”?

Dear Reader: Shock occurs when there is not enough blood flowing through the body to supply the oxygen and nutrients your cells need to survive.

People who go into shock can develop organ damage – or even die – if the condition is not treated promptly.

Shock results from extremely low blood pressure, which can result from many different causes.

Low blood pressure may be brought on by a heart problem. A serious heart rhythm abnormality, for example, keeps the heart from forcefully pumping enough oxygen-rich blood throughout the body.

So can a heart attack, which weakens the heart muscle.

Low blood pressure also can be caused by severe dehydration, which may result from prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, or by not drinking enough fluids. This lessens the amount of fluid in the blood, which affects blood pressure.

Another cause of low blood pressure is heavy bleeding. Blood loss significant enough to cause shock can follow a severe injury, or it may be the result of bleeding from the stomach or intestines.

However it happens, just as with severe dehydration, the amount of fluid in the blood vessels drops – and with it, blood pressure.

Shock quickly can develop from chemicals produced by severe infections or a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.

The chemicals cause blood vessel walls to become leaky; fluid leaves the blood to go elsewhere in the body. With less fluid, blood pressure drops.

Dear Abby: In recent conversations with my daughter, who is away in college, she opened up to me that she is hooking up. She introduced herself to this guy two weeks ago, and she’s already having sex with him.

I tried to caution her about the dangers of such relationships and how harmful they can be physically and emotionally. She sounded annoyed and said it is her body and she has a right to do whatever she pleases.

I am shocked and disappointed. She’s the first person in our family to go to college. If I tell her father, he would disown her. I am beside myself. My younger daughter soon will be applying to college, and now I’m wondering whether I should allow her to go away, given her sister’s behavior.

When you are less emotional, talk with your daughter and advise her to visit the student health center to be checked for STDs and get on a program of birth control.

Your daughter is no longer a child. She is a young woman, and sexual activity among college students is not unheard of. While I agree with you hopping into bed with someone you have known for only two weeks is premature, if she’s able to maintain her grade point average, there is no reason to alarm her father. If she isn’t, then bring her home.

I assume you have discussed sex and family standards with your younger daughter. If that’s the case, it would be unfair to punish or restrict her because you are disappointed in her older sister.

It’s important he knows how she feels before the wedding, because if he learns about it afterward, there will be problems.

However, if she’s unwilling to communicate her feelings to your son, then let him know she has “concerns” about his job and suggest he discuss them with her before they say any “I do’s.”
