BOLINGBROOK – With Illinois just one day away from shutting down services, residents filled a room at the Fountaindale Public Library on Monday night to air concerns to Democrat lawmakers.

Some expressed concern over what could happen to key state services if a budget deal is not struck by the end of Tuesday, while others criticized lawmakers for not compromising with Gov. Bruce Rauner on his reform proposals.

The town hall meeting, hosted by area Democratic state legislators, gave the lawmakers the opportunity to spotlight Rauner’s recent decision to veto a Democrat-backed spending plan. Although about $4 billion short on revenue, lawmakers argued it’s one option that could potentially circumvent a government shutdown and accelerate talks about needed revenue.

But Joe Nichols of Shorewood was quick to point out the blame should not fall solely on Rauner, who is six months into his first term and blasted the Democratic Party for years of operating Illinois in the red.

“I think, you, the Democratic Party should hang its head in shame. [Rauner] has a mess on his hands, and who created this mess?” Nichols said. “We’re constantly talking about ‘Oh, Rauner’s cutting this, Rauner’s cutting that. He’s the bad guy.’ … Yet we don’t seem to have the money. Well, I’m going to throw it right back in your lap and ask what are you going to do about it?”

Rauner has repeatedly said he won’t consider new revenue for Illinois until Democrats are on board with a number of systemic reforms in politics and state government. At the same time, Democrats want to spend more than the amount of projected revenue, arguing it’s to protect essential state services.

Nichols was among the 50 or so residents who attended the town hall meeting, where questions were fielded by state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Romeoville, Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant and Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet.

Bertino-Tarrant said Rauner is, in part, to blame because “he chose” to take on this role as governor.

“People are not going to

agree with him and he needs to understand that. We’ve said that [state government] is not a business. When you are CEO of a business, you get to dictate what happens, but this is government where things are voted on,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

The Illinois House and Senate are scheduled to meet in Springfield on Tuesday and Wednesday, but as recently as Monday night, party caucus leaders and Rauner failed to reach a compromise during budget talks. It’s unclear whether there’s support to override Rauner’s budget veto – but even then, the issue of revenue remains.

PLAINFIELD – Two men were found dead Monday morning inside a Plainfield house in the 13300 block of Millbank Drive, Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek said.

Konopek said the two men, one from Aurora and one from

Naperville, were found dead on the first floor of the home. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification to next of kin.

A call came from inside the house about 8 a.m., Konopek said, adding the two men were not permanent residents of the house. There didn’t appear to be signs of trauma on the bod-

ies, Konopek said.

Will County Chief Deputy Coroner Robert Brenczewski said the deaths do not “appear to be foul play” and autopsies had been scheduled for Tuesday. Plainfield police are investigating the deaths.

Plainfield couple works to preserve house

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – John and Keebie Bright’s new home in Plainfield, at 24010 Commercial St., is filled with antiques.

An old-style fireplace in the living room is topped by an old mantel. Above it hang a few items Keebie has collected over the years as a history buff.

The family room floor still has original flooring, and the elderly couple’s beds are styled and raised like in the 19th century.

But the most notable part about the couple’s new home is that it’s the oldest home in the village, thought to have been built in the 1830s by the founder of Plainfield, Chester Ingersoll.

The Brights bought the house and began the renovation process in 2013, after it survived the threat of being torn down.

“Back then [in 2013], we thought it would be a fun retirement thing to do,” Keebie said.

“It took two years, and we’re not in very good health, so we probably wouldn’t have considered it now.”

Saving the house

Keebie was wearing a 19th century outfit June 17 while Plainfield Historic Preservation Commission Chair Michael Bortel presented her and John with a plaque for their investment into the historic house.

The presentation drew a crowd of about 20 people who toured the home, which at one point was about to be demolished by former owner Dr. Peter Muraglia, a dentist who owns Plainfield Dental next door.

“He was going to demolish it so he could expand his business,” said historic preservation commission member Debra Olsen. Olsen negotiated with Muraglia to buy the house and moved it about 30

The Brights bought the house from Olsen, investing $300,000 to renovate it to its original 1830s appearance. Olsen helped coordinate the restoration with Plainfield-based Hometown Builders and Arris Architects.

“We had a lot of interior of the building that wasn’t the original,” Olsen said. “We had to do a lot of demolition to get it down to the historic bones of the house, and that took about six months.”

Historic designation

The research and process

of designating a historic structure often is started or led by local history enthusiasts.

Former Morris Alderman Ken Sereno, who resigned in

May after 34 years on the city council, has spent hours with old Morris Herald-News microfilm searching for events that have added to historic homes’

histories.

“I used to go down to the courthouse to look up the history of who has lived in the houses, and that’s what I used as a basis,” he said.

Sereno has authored books on the historic homes of Morris, helping to identify the 41 homes in Morris that are used by the Morris Downtown Development Partnership’s “Heritage Homes” project.

The goal of the Heritage Homes project is to create an interest in older homes and the community’s history.

Coal City storm cleanup continues

COAL CITY – Maintenance and nonprofit organization crews were at work Monday to clean up debris in Coal City from the tornado that hit the area last week.

Maintenance and public works crews from other villages and cities are helping out, as well as Team Rubicon, AmeriCorps and the Illinois Department of Transportation. More than 70 trucks from IDOT, mutual aid communities, private companies and volunteers are expected to roll into the city.

More than 800 structures were damaged in Coal City when an EF3 tornado with winds up to 160 mph hit the village just before 10 p.m. June 22, leaving debris throughout the community of about 5,500 people.

Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday said the situation is improving in the village, and in the next three days organizations plan to get as much storm debris out of town as possible.

Thousands of volunteers have been helping since Friday with the cleanup effort, which has focused on ridding the village of storm debris to ensure streets are open for traffic, and storm water sys-

tems can run unimpeded.

The rain over the weekend and Monday has been a source of frustration with the cleanup, Halliday said.

He said the goals for this week will not only be debris removal, but reduction of security perimeters – or check-

points – to the point where the village’s own police department can manage them.

By the end of Monday or on Tuesday, crews might isolate the number of security perimeters to one subdivision, Halliday said. Coal City police Sgt. Thomas Logan said Monday morning there were eight checkpoints and four roving patrols.

Crews have focused on cleaning Spring Road and Broadway Street, as that area is where vehicles can get in and out of the village quickly, he said.

Volunteer work was limited Monday because of the amount of equipment needed to clear out storm debris, Halliday said. He said there are 100 pieces of equipment – such as dump trucks and grapplers – that teams of crews are using in 13 areas zoned for work.

Residential trash collection will resume Tuesday and village officials coordinated with Waste Management to have additional trucks in operation.

“We’re trying to communicate with residents that storm debris is not personal items. … That needs to be handled by them personally, through

their own insurance,” Halliday said.

Coal City partnered with Team Rubicon, an international nonprofit disaster response organization, to visit each property affected by the tornado and offer assistance.

The property owner is under no obligation to participate in the Team Rubicon program, village officials said.

Relief workers at Coal City Methodist Church still are feeding people three meals a day as well as helping them secure cleaning supplies and other items. The church will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but will be closed Saturday.

The church will re-open Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.

Church members plan to update the Facebook page every day with items needed.

Lori Cora, relief coordinator at the church, said if volunteers are interested in helping with kitchen work, unloading items or other work, they should call 815-634-8670 first.

Cora said families are starting to come in to the church more after the initial shock of the storm.

“Now they’re looking to take care of things,” she said.

The free laundry service offered Monday is just one of many ways local residents,

businesses and organizations have pitched in to help since the tornado, which packed winds up to 160 mph.

Godley Park District Cub Scout Troop 459 Leader Ryan Deboard said the troop washed nearly 50 loads of laundry by mid-afternoon Monday. The laundromat donated $300 in quarters and several boxes of detergent to help those who were displaced by the tornado.

“They were really proud they could help the community in their own way,” Daisy Troop 71043 Leader Brandi Schlieper said. The Daisy Troop is based out of St. Rose School in Wilmington/Braidwood.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way officials have scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday to gather more public input on the financial direction of the school district as they try to find ways to reduce budget deficits.

At 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Lincoln-Way Central High School, officials will give an overview of the challenges facing the school district, as well as potential solutions. Lincoln-Way has the lowest rating on the state’s financial watch list, and school leaders need to come up with a deficit reduction plan by September.

“This is an opportunity for the public to share their thoughts and concerns with the board,” Lincoln-Way Superintendent Scott Tingley said about this week’s meeting. “We put a questionnaire out on our website for the

Lincoln-Way school officials have been working with PMA Financial Network and the Illinois State Board of Education to study their finances and come up with a deficit reduction plan. Tingley has said a combination of poor economy, low state funding and declining revenues have left the school district in dire financial shape.

Tingley said not much has changed since the last meeting, where board members weighed several scenarios to reduce the school district’s budget deficit,

which PMA Financial Network has pegged to be about $7.9 million. The school district still is “in a holding pattern,” Tingley said, but funding will increase a little with Gov. Bruce Rauner signing legislation that increases state education funding.

At the June 11 school board meeting, school officials presented the following scenarios: • School closure, which would give Lincoln-Way savings of about $5.2 million.

• A two-year, 5 percent CPI referendum, giving Lincoln-Way $5.3 million in additional revenue by the 2017-18 school year.

• Eliminating one class period and extracurricular activities for all students, amounting to $5.3 million in savings.

Other options presented included a pension cost shift, property tax freeze or a combination of a referendum with a pension cost shift and school closure with a pension cost shift.

Chicago woman identified as person killed in Sunday crash on Interstate 80 near Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawnews.com MORRIS – A Chicago woman was killed Sunday after being involved in a five-vehicle collision on Interstate 80 in Morris.

Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan said his office is investigating the death of 66-year-old Linda Baines, who was involved in a crash at 1:22 p.m. Sunday on I-80, just east of the Route 47 interchange.

Baines was traveling east on I-80 when the crash occurred, according to a news release from Callahan’s office.

She was taken to the emergency room at Morris Hospital,

where she was pronounced dead at 1:53 p.m.

A 7-year-old boy who was a passenger in Baines’ car had no injuries, according to the Illinois State Police.

The preliminary investigation into the crash found that a Chevy Cruze driven by a 34-year-old Morris man was traveling east on I-80 in the right lane just east of Route 47.

The Chevy Cruze cut off the Jeep Liberty driven by Baines, according to a news release issued Monday from ISP. “The Jeep Liberty swerved to the left and drove off the roadway, through the center median ditch and went airborne into the westbound lanes of I-80,” the news re-

lease said. “The Jeep Liberty crashed into the following vehicles, causing a chain reaction crash with the Dodge Ram, GMC Acadia, Nissan Versa and Buick Enclave.”

The driver of the Chevy Cruze was issued a citation for improper lane usages.

Besides the fatality, three people traveling in the other vehicles were taken to area hospitals. The collision remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police and the coroner’s office.

The crash caused I-80 westbound near Route 47 to be shut down until after 5 p.m., according to Illinois State Police, and traffic eastbound was shut down intermittently.

Hockey hero comes home Scott Darling brings Stanley Cup to Lemont for celebration More inside

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Residents of Lemont welcomed back native son – and Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup champion – Scott Darling for a celebration Monday.

Monday was Darling’s day with the Stanley Cup, and he chose to spend part of the day posing for pictures and signing autographs at the Lemont Park District CORE Fitness and Aquatic Center.

“It’s the place I’ve called home my whole life,” said Darling, who plays goalie for the Hawks. “It’s incredible. It means so much to me.

“I’m just proud I was able to bring this back to you guys.”

The event started about 12:45 p.m. with Darling and the Cup parading to the CORE atop a fire truck, followed by a rally with an audience of local VIPs before the event opened for the public at 2 p.m.

Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves proclaimed the day “Scott Darling Day” and presented several gifts to the Hawks goalie.

“I can tell you this has got to be one of the most amazing things as far as being mayor in the village of Lemont,” Reaves said.

The most lasting mark from the day will be the new Scott Darling Drive, a sign that will be erected on Fourth Street,

Among those in attendance was Darling’s father, also named Scott, who still lives in Lemont.

The elder Darling said he remembers when the family first moved to Lemont and how his son played for teams in Orland Park and Darien.

He said it is surreal to see

his son bring the Cup back to Lemont.

“It’s something you can never dream of,” he said. “The best part is to see all the Blackhawks fans.”

Darling also brought his girlfriend, Martha Buckley, and her parents. As residents of Boston, cheering for Darling did require a change of alle-

giance.

“Any jersey that Scott wears, I’m the biggest fan of,” she said. “It was a pretty easy decision this time. Getting off the plane in Boston with a Blackhawks hat on, I’d do it again.”

Buckley also said she likes to tease Darling that she has more skills on the ice, because

she was once a competitive figure skater.

Thousands of people lined up Monday, waiting in the rain for a chance to see Darling and the Cup, but the first were the Cece and Kunickis families of Lemont.

Al Kunickis said they arrived at 6 a.m., and the next people in line arrived a halfhour later.

“I thought there were going to be a ton of people,” he said.

Nikki Cece said they wanted to get in line early because “it’s a special moment for our kids.”

The kids could not decide whether they were more excited to see the Cup or Darling.

Although it has been years since Darling lived in town, there still were many people who remember Darling and his family.

“I grew up with his sister, so it’s really awesome to be able to support Scott,” said Lemont resident Patti Handley.

Gregg Eichwedel said he lived down the street from the Darlings.

“It was worth it [waiting for hours] to see him and get that close to the Cup,” he said.

“Scott was very personable to all my kids and family.”

LOCAL BRIEFS UNINCORPORATED MOKENA – Police say an Israeli flag was defaced with Nazi graffiti earlier this month.

Will County Sheriff’s Police were called June 13 to a residence in the 12000 block of West Lauffer Road where a 55-year-old man reported the vandalism.

According to reports, the man came outside to find two 12-inch swastikas spray-painted on the 2-by-4-foot Israel flag that was on

a pole in the front yard.

Police reports do not list any suspect information.

“I asked [the victim] if he had any idea who would have damaged his flag and he stated ‘I have no idea. I’m not even Jewish,’ ” a deputy reported.

Police: Teen tripped and shot friend

JOLIET – A teen survived an encounter Saturday with his friend’s itchy trigger finger and clumsy feet, police said.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said police were informed at 2:54 a.m. a 17-yearold boy was being taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox with a gunshot wound to his back.

“At the same time, shots were reported in the 400 block of East Washington Street,” Roechner noted.

The boy’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.

At the hospital the teen told police he’d been walking with a 16-year-old friend in the alley from the 400 block of Mississippi Avenue. He claimed the friend had wanted to shoot the pistol he was carrying and someone began shooting back, according to Roechner.

“Investigators spoke with the 16-year-old boy who admitted the gun went off when he slipped and fell and he shot his friend in the back,” Roechner said.

The juvenile was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Department of Children and Family Services spokeswoman Veronica Resa said Monday the child’s death has prompted an investigation of

LOCKPORT – The crossing on West Ninth Street between Davies Avenue and Ames Road in Lockport will be closed Tuesday through Friday.

City officials announced in a news release Monday the crossing is being closed to replace railroad ties identified by BNSF Railway as critical. The crossing will not be accessible to the public during the construction period, which is from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

The crossing will reopen each night for one lane of

accessibility. BNSF Railway will provide a flag staff member to monitor the crossing north of the construction site in the Chevron Business Park crossing on an alternate route.

Chevron Business Park partnered with city officials to allow residents and emergency vehicles access at the intersection of Canal and Second streets by using the private crossing at the Chevron site.

City officials said the closure does not affect traffic on the bridge over the Des Plaines River but the BNSF Railway crossing underneath it.

JOLIET – Authorities said it was a young boy playing with fire who started the June 19 blaze in a Joliet home that killed his 7-year-old sister.

“The 5-year-old boy had a curiosity for fire that seems to have been going on for a while,” Joliet Fire Chief Joe Formhals said Monday.

Investigators believe the boy was lighting pieces of paper from the stove and dropping them to stomp them out in his family’s apartment at 603 Dover St. “He brought it into a bedroom and it looks like it caught the bedding and nearby clothing on fire,” Formhals said. “[Mia Sykes] went to tell her mother the brother was playing with fire again.”

The woman tried to extinguish the flames with a pitcher of water before calling 911.

She was able to escape the building with the 5-year-old boy and a toddler, but was unable to locate her daughter, Formhals said.

Firefighters arrived about 10 a.m. and were informed the child was trapped inside.

Mia was found unresponsive on the first floor and taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 12:07 p.m.

It took firefighters about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control, according to reports.

HELEN HOLLENBECK Helen Hollenbeck (nee Pezze), a lifelong resident of Joliet passed away suddenly at home at the age of 74.

Born January 23, 1941, to the late Anthony and Jennie (nee Corso) Pezze.

Survived by four children, Paul (Juana), Lynn (Rob) Bednar, Ray (Ginger) and Gina (Scott) Filippelli. Adoring Grandmother to five grandchildren, Michael, Zachary, Sara, Jessica and Emma.

Preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Hollenbeck (2009); and a brother, John Pezze.

Helen was a proud alumni of St. Francis Academy and Northern Illinois University. Helen taught in the Joliet Public Schools for 25 years and retired in 2002. During her 25 years, she taught at Eisenhower, FE Marsh and Cunningham grade schools. In recent years she enjoyed volunteering at St. Joseph Hospital Gift Shop, the Rialto Square Theatre and the Encore Shop at Silver Cross Hospital.

Helen was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with her grandkids on family vacations and took great pride in watching them at their concerts, plays, and athletic events. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed being part of the Joliet Area Garden Club.

Born October 17, 1957, in Peoria, IL to Ronald E. and Betty L. (nee Gill) Hulva.

Randal worked for Caterpillar Inc. retiring in December 2014 following 37 years of dedicated service. Randal enjoyed music, building guitars, fishing, raising and showing Boxers, and building his remote control airplanes.

MARJORIE LOU JENSEN Born: July 27, 1927 Died: June 25, 2015

Marjorie Lou Jensen (nee Bell), age 87, passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 25, at home in Joliet.

Daughter to William Bell & Lurene (Hanson) Bell, she was born in Chicago July 27, 1927, but Joliet was her lifetime home.

Marge was a graduate of Joliet Central, class of 1945 & continued her education with an associate’s degree from Kendall College & Roosevelt University. Marge met the love of her life, LaVerne, at the Rialto Square Theatre where she sold war bonds in the lobby and he was an usher. They married on November 26, 1950, at Ingalls Park Methodist Church.

Throughout her life, Marge worked outside the home most notably J C Penney for over 20 years. After retirement, she & Vern were active in the SCCA where Marge was a track official for timing & scoring. Marge loved to read, embroider, plant flowers & garden plus she was committed to her church as a Sunday School teacher & in numerous women’s groups.

In addition, she was Past President of Harwood Post #5 Auxillary, Cantigny VFW Post #367 Auxillary, plus 18th District VFW past President. Currently serving as Chaplain of Harwood Post #5 Auxillary. Proud member of the Destroyer Escort Group which she co-founded with Vern.

Survived by her husband, LaVerne H of Joliet; her children, Sandra Lu (Frank) Gunter of Normal, IL, William H (Kimberly) Jensen of Joliet, & Anton E (Sue) Jensen of Island Lake. Six grandchildren, Eric (Sofie) Gunter, Kevin (Alexandra) Gunter, Jennifer (Scott) Bartnik, Brent (Kelsey Lexow) Jensen, Shannell Jensen & Jordan Jensen; 5 great-grandchildren; plus

Alice J. Stiglic (Rozich) “Tootsie”, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born April 5, 1928, to the late John and Mary Rozich (Ilenich).

Alice was a Joliet resident her entire life attending St. Joseph Joliet Grade School and Joliet Township High School. Worked many years as a bookkeeper for her cousin, Joe Rozich’s accounting practice. Longtime office manager/bookkeeper for Yack Sheet Metal, Inc. retiring in 1988.

She married her best friend and the love of her life, Charles E. Stiglic Jr. on October 7, 1950, at St. Joseph Church, Joliet, presided by her cousin Fr. George Kuzma. She enjoyed family vacations, traveling with friends, hosting family parties and monthly card parties with her girlfriends.

She is survived by two daughters, Marilynn (Terry) Juricic and Charlene (Doug) Fumagalli; one son, John (MaryJo) Stiglich; seven grandchildren, Terry (Christina) Juricic, Katie (Dan) Markun, Lauren (Jim) McFarland, John (Beth) Stiglich II,

Helen Catherine Loucks (nee Feneli), age 90 of Joliet, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2015, at Heritage Health, Hoopeston, Illinois.

Born in Joliet on May 2, 1925, living in Joliet most of her life.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Olive Eva Feneli. Helen married James Ray Loucks on July 2, 1944, in Joliet and he preceded her in death on November 10, 2000.

Helen will be missed by her two sons and daughter, Richard (Sue) Loucks of Casper, WY, Jerry (Connie) Loucks of Joliet, IL and Catherine (Matthew) Rademacher of Potomac, IL. Six grandchildren, Robin (Dale) Benson of Casper,WY, Tracy Pearson (Harold) of Willison, ND, Christopher Loucks of Casper, WY, Nicole (Nick) Davis of Plainfield, IL, Joseph (Lauren) Geiselman of Minooka, IL, Timothy Geiselman and his girlfriend, Holly Klockenga of Charleston, IL; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley Allen, Shelby Pearson, Ryan Shoemaker, Alex and Olivia Davis, Evelyn and Lilly Geiselman; two great-great grandchildren, Blake Davis and Ruxin Mehl; one beloved sister, Glenor Campbello of Joliet, IL; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Eugene Feneli, Ray Feneli and an infant brother Richard.

Helen was a founding member of St. Mary Magdalene Church in Joliet. Her faith was always strong until the very end of her life. Helen “Grama or GG” as she was also known, loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to clean and spend time out-doors and in the wintertime, she worked on jigsaw puzzles with her sister, Glenor.

A special thank you to all the wonderful people at Hoopeston Heritage Health and Iroquois Memorial Hospice who cared for Helen for the last few months of her life.

A celebration of Helen’s life will be held from the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home 2320 Black Road on Thursday, July 2, 2015, beginning at 9:15 a.m. with a procession to St. Mary Magdaline Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Senior Group, KSKJ American Slovenian Catholic Union, St. Joseph’s Rosarian Club and the Slovenian Women’s Union.

GOP governor moves to avoid shutdown of state government

SPRINGFIELD – The Republican governor and the state’s largest employee union moved Monday to avoid a partial government shutdown, with the union saying members will continue to show up for work even if the state begins operating without a budget and the governor pledging to do what he can to ensure they don’t miss a paycheck.

But a new fight appeared to be taking shape between Gov. Bruce Rauner – typically seen as an enemy of organized labor – and the Democratic attorney general, who said workers can’t be paid until the governor and Democrats who run the Legislature pass a new budget.

The back-and-forth is the latest in a months-long fight between Rauner and majority Democrats over how to resolve Illinois’ massive financial problems and – more recently – who will take the blame if state government begins grinding to a halt and critical services are cut off.

Mayor rejects plan

by Rauner for $450M to Chicago schools

CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel is rejecting Gov. Bruce Rauner’s offer to advance $450 million in state funds to help Chicago Public Schools make a $634 million pension payment.

Emanuel spokeswoman Kelley Quinn said Monday using 2016 grants to pay this year’s pension costs “follows the same path that got the schools into the current financial mess.”

Quinn said CPS needs “a real solution,” such as a Rauner proposal announced last week.

“The rapid social changes signaled by the court ruling call us to mature and serene reflections as we move forward together. In that process, the Catholic Church will stand ready to offer a wisdom rooted in faith and a wide range of human experience,” Cupich said in a news release.

The Catholic Church “has an abiding concern for the dignity of gay” people and its teachings call on members to avoid “unjust discrimination in their regard,” Cupich said.

Amtrak plans major makeover for Union Station in Chicago

CHICAGO – The public hasn’t seen them for decades, but Chicago’s Union Station has

large rooms with 33-foot-high ceilings that once were filled with restaurants, a dance hall and tailor shops during its heyday in the 1940s and ’50s.

Amtrak now wants to open those thousands of square feet and is soliciting proposals from investors and businesses to bid on them for retail rental, with the hope of attracting restaurants, cafés, retailers, a hotel and a grocery store, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The goal is to transform the 90-year-old building into a traveler and visitor’s venue that exceeds the retail and food offerings at Union Station in Washington, D.C., said to Paul Sanders, Amtrak senior manager of facilities management at Chicago’s Union Station.

Durbin meets with officials in Haiti to talk U.S. assistance

CHICAGO – The office of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois said he has met with officials in Haiti to discuss the status of U.S. assistance programs more than five years after an earthquake killed thousands.

A news release from Durbin’s office stated he and U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida were in Haiti over the weekend. The release said they met with Haiti President Michel Martelly, U.S. Ambassador Pamela White and other officials. Durbin said in the release he is “encouraged” by recovery efforts he has seen.

Durbin’s office said it was his third trip to Haiti in 10 years.

Supreme Court OKs use of controversial execution drug

By MARK SHERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Trading sharp words, a deeply divided Supreme Court upheld the use of a controversial drug in lethal-injection executions Monday, even as two dissenting justices said for the first time they think it’s “highly likely” the death penalty itself is unconstitutional.

On their last day together until the fall, the justices voted, 5-4, in a case from Oklahoma that the sedative midazolam can be used in executions without violating the Eighth Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.

The court also divided, 5-4, in cases upholding congressional districts drawn by independent commissions and calling into question first-ever limits on mercury emissions from power plants.

In addition, the justices also agreed to hear an important affirmative action case in the fall and acted to keep Texas abortion clinics open amid a legal fight that threatens to close most of them.

In the dispute over the lethal-injection drug, midazolam was used in Arizona, Ohio and Oklahoma executions in 2014. The executions took longer than usual and raised concerns that the drug did not perform its intended task of putting inmates into a coma-like sleep.

Justice Samuel Alito said for a conservative majority that arguments the drug could not be used effectively as a sedative in executions were speculative, and he dismissed problems in executions in Arizona and Oklahoma as “having little probative value for present purposes.”

More than 100 death row-inmates have been exonerated, showing the death penalty is unreliable, Breyer said. He said it also is imposed arbitrarily, takes far too long to carry out and has been abandoned by most of the country. Last year, only seven states carried out executions, he said.

the use of the death penalty, although Breyer and Ginsburg stopped short of declaring their outright opposition to capital punishment.

In 1972, the Supreme Court struck down every state’s death penalty laws. Some justices believed at the time the decision effectively would end capital punishment.

Instead, many states wrote new laws, and four years later the court reinstated the death penalty, a decision in which Stevens joined.

In an extremely unusual turn Monday, four justices read their opinions from the bench in the lethal execution case. Justice Antonin Scalia, part of the court’s majority, read a brief reply to Breyer. “Welcome to Groundhog Day,” Scalia said, noting that the court has repeatedly upheld the use of capital punishment.

Scalia used Breyer’s own words to complain that the liberal justices were willing to discard long-settled principles in a term in which the left side of the court won most of the closely contested cases, although not the lethal injection dispute. “It is not often in the law that so few have so quickly changed so much,” Scalia said.

“They had to go down to the county clerk’s office and find out when the historic home was built and what changes were made,” said Debbie Steffes, from the Grundy County Historical Society.

Historic homes have restrictions on repainting and remodeling, but the designation also comes with tax incentives, Steffes said.

A stretch of Lockport Street in Plainfield was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Under the designations, historic building owners can receive a 20 percent federal income tax credit for the property,

or a property tax assessment freeze, Bortel said.

The national register lists 35 properties or districts in Will County and seven in Grundy County.

A larger local historic district was designated in the same area by the village of Plainfield. But the tax incentive motivates owners to restore the property to an older look, Bortel said.

One example of this is the recently renovated “Opera House,” at the intersection of Lockport and Des Plaines streets, which owner Bill Habiger restored to its original 1889 Queen Anne style.

Habiger spent more than $1 million on the restoration, meaning he will likely receive a tax credit upward of $200,000 on his more than $1 million restoration.

For Keebie, a former member of the historic preservation commission, the Ingersoll house was more about seeing history preserved.

“This was the very first home and to tear it down? I’m glad it turned out this way,” she said.

Wanted: Auditor with keen pencil Illinois Auditor General William Holland is retiring Dec. 31, and we – the residents of Illinois – all likely owe him a card and maybe flowers.

His job, simply stated, is to keep those in state government honest by employing integrity, a hard nose and a team of accountants.

He is the guy who took aim at the state’s workers’ compensation system after the News-Democrat’s investigation of 230 Menard Correctional Center employees, mostly guards, who got $10 million by claiming ailments including wrist ouchies from turning cell door locks.

He is the guy who audited former Gov. Pat Quinn’s use of the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative and showed the money was going to questionable sources and sprinkling dollars where votes were needed. The revelations of that audit were a big part of why we now have a new governor.

This is the guy who uncovered more than $546,650 in tax dollar abuses by convicted Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who used the state’s purchasing system to wine, dine and pay for parking at Bulls games.

The Blagojevich audit in 2005 led to the biggest confrontation and pushback of Holland’s 23 years leading the auditor’s office.

Blags called the findings illogical, but they all proved to be true. If you judge a man by the enemies he makes, Blagojevich alone renders Holland worthy.

So the low-key defender of your tax dollar recently called his second news conference since he took office in 1992 – the first was to defend the Blagojevich findings. At age 63, he wants to spend more time with family.

We wish him well. We offer our sincere thanks to a true servant of the public good.

We hope the new person is as upright.

Madigan sends a budget message to Chicago House Speaker Michael Madigan likes to send “messages.” He doesn’t often explain what those messages are, but last week’s surprising defeat of a bill to give the Chicago Public Schools a 40-day extension on its $634 million pension payment due June 30 was most surely a message to somebody.

Despite his spokesman saying the day before that Madigan was “prepared to be supportive,” it’s clear Madigan did not work to pass the bill, which was being pushed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. His staff did not urge members to vote for it before or during the roll call.

Madigan himself said he did not ask the Republicans for a specific number of votes for a structured roll call, which is another indication he wasn’t ready to move the ball forward.

Madigan’s deputy, Majority Leader Lou Lang, presided over the proceeding. A newspaper reported Lang voted

“No” in order to file a motion to reconsider the vote that would keep it alive. OK, but if you watch the roll call, Lang pushed his red button right after the voting was opened, which probably sent a strong signal to the rank and file.

House Democrats don’t have to be told what to do at moments like these. As we’ve seen time and again, when Madigan doesn’t actively push a bill, his members automatically assume things aren’t soup yet and they can vote however they want.

So, when Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office sent out a statement saying: “The only reason the speaker’s Chicago caucus would vote against the mayor’s bill is because Madigan wanted to kill it,” Madigan could deny to reporters – with a straight face – he said that to anybody.

But whether the governor’s office is right or if Madigan simply stepped aside and allowed the bill to go down on its own, the end result is still the

“This complicates things,” a high-level Rauner administration official cryptically said. Yep. That’s what he said. He refused to elaborate further.

Despite the dark humor, the Rauner folks were in no mood for the usual Springfield parlor game of guessing what Madigan actually was trying to say without actually saying it.

They thought they had a deal, they trusted Madigan to hold up his end, and instead the bill went down in flames. Their anger was palpable.

They also didn’t appear to have the patience to wait until the House returned to Springfield for another crack at the legislation (and, because of the looming deadline, when the bill’s passage seems much more likely).

OK, back to the “messages” parlor game. What the heck was Madigan up to?

Most likely, he was sending a message to Emanuel that if he wanted to cut deals with Rauner and Senate President John Cullerton, he’d have to work his caucus to find the votes – or come to him and ask that he do it. And he also likely wants Rauner to “own” this steaming pile of kick the can.

Insiders long have said Madigan has believed from the beginning that those three men would attempt to triangulate him. Emanuel lives in Cullerton’s district, and he has a long-standing professional, political and personal friendship with Rauner. It’s always been the obvious play: Line up the mayor, the governor, the Senate Democrats and the two House GOP caucuses against the House speaker.

But it’s also a dangerous game because trapping that old bull in a corner will have serious long-term consequences, which is why Cullerton

has gone far out of his way to not make it appear this was happening.

The Rauner administration, however, sent a clear signal before the House vote that, as far as it was concerned. The triangulation play had begun.

A letter to Rep. John Bradley from the governor’s chief legislative liaison about a Bradley committee request for some internal payroll information: “While we understand your desire to hold sham hearings to distract the taxpayers from your vote for an unbalanced budget and your desire to raise taxes without reform, we will continue to negotiate in good faith with Senate Democrats, Mayor Emanuel and Republican leaders toward a comprehensive bipartisan agreement to turn around Illinois.”

You can’t get much clearer than that.

Holmes took unusual path to NBA Draft

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com Richaun Holmes realizes all too well he chose a rather unconventional route to being selected in last week’s NBA Draft.

Unlike most of the standouts who were chosen Thursday, the 2011 Lockport graduate wasn’t a marquee player from an early age, but rather a diamond in the rough.

He saw limited time at each level during his first three years with the Porters before finally breaking through during his senior season.

He continued to build upon that in a successful campaign at Moraine Valley Community College before enjoying a memorable three-year career at Bowling Green State University.

The payoff for all of his hard work came when he was selected 37th by the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Draft, making him one of the few players from this area ever to earn that honor.

“It’s been great, a dream come true,” Holmes said. “God has definitely been good to me to allow me to have the opportunity to play at the highest level.

“It’s great to have the chance to play in the NBA.” When he entered Lockport as a freshman, Holmes was only 5-foot-9, and the coaching staff didn’t really even know if he fit into their long-term plans.

But, fortunately, the staff didn’t miscalculate. As new Porters coach Brett Hespell admits, they saw promising signs and decided to keep him around because of his potential.

After barely playing as a sophomore and not seeing much time as a junior, Holmes broke through during his senior season, when – as a 6-6 post player – he averaged 11.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.1 blocks.

“He’s come a long way, and I’m so excited for him,” Hespell said. “He used to be a guy who complained about doing extra stuff, but then he started to mature. And that’s a credit to

With not many good college options on the table, Holmes opted to attend the junior college in Palos Heights, and the move worked out well. He averaged 19.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.2 blocks for the Cyclones to earn Skyway Conference Player of the Year and NJCAA Division II All-American honors.

From the time Holmes appeared on the Bowling Green, Ohio campus, he became a shot-blocking specialist. Despite starting only twice in 31 games in 2012-13, he set a school record with 73 blocks, breaking the old mark set nearly 40 years earlier by 14.

The next year, he earned Mid-American Conference third-team all-conference honors. Holmes broke his blocks record with 88 and established himself as the school’s alltime leader. He started 31 of 32 games and averaged 13.3 points and 7.7 rebounds, leading in scoring and tying for the lead in rebounding.

He saved his best for last, leading the team this past season in scoring (14.7), rebounding (8.0) and blocked shots (2.7). His 83 blocks gave him the top three totals in that category.

Holmes also became the first Bowling Green player to score 1,000 points, grab 600 rebounds and block 200 shots, and he’s the school’s all-time leader with 244 blocks. He finished his three-year career ranked seventh in field goal percentage and 11th in rebounding.

All that helped him to be named the MAC’s Defensive Player of the Year and earn a spot on the All-MAC First Team. He also was selected as the Falcons’ Male Athlete of the Year.

After good performances at the Portsmouth Invitational and NBA Draft Combine and workouts with 16 different franchises, Holmes emerged as a likely draft candidate.

Then, on Thursday, the now-6-10 forward became the first MAC player selected in the NBA Draft since 2003 and Bowling Green’s first pick since Antonio Daniels in 1997.

“It all came together for me at Bowling Green,” Holmes said. “I worked hard every day and put myself in better positions, and it all worked out.

“To know how hard I’ve worked and how hard it is to get here, that makes it that much sweeter for me and my family. It feels great to get the chance to live my dream.”

LEMONT – The past year has been a whirlwind for Scott Darling after the Lemont native signed with the Blackhawks on July 1, 2014.

Having made a variety of stops on the minor-league circuit, the 26-yearold got his first call-up to the NHL on Oct. 26 and was the winning goalie in a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators.

Darling went on to play in 14 regular-season games before seeing action in five postseason contests in the opening round against Nashville, where he notched three wins. His performance helped the Hawks advance to the second round and ultimately capture their third Stanley Cup in the past six seasons.

In the process, the 6-foot-6 goalie became the first Chicago-area born player to have his name etched on the Cup as a member of the Hawks.

On Monday, Darling brought the cup to his former hometown and put it on display at the Lemont Park District. Shaw Media writer Scott Schmid was part of a news conference at which Darling spoke about the experience in Lemont and what it has been like to be a part of a Stanley Cup champion.

Q: What has the last couple weeks been like, and has it sunk in that you are a Stanley Cup champion?

Darling: It’s been crazy since we’ve won. We’ve done a lot of great stuff, like going to Wrigley Field and going to see Mumford & Sons. And now, this is my day to share the Cup with my hometown and with my family and friends.

Once it all winds down a little bit, I can relax and just reflect, maybe turn my phone off for a few days and enjoy it for a little bit.

Q: What has the last year been like?

Darling: The whole year, from start

to finish, like I’ve said before, it was such an honor to sign with the team, and I was thrilled to be on the [Rockford] Ice Hogs. Then to get the opportunity with Chicago and to have a role in the playoffs and winning the Cup, it’s been unbelievable.

North, South Pony All-Stars split pair SUBMITTED REPORT CREST HILL – The 14-year-old AllStars of the North and South split their DuPage River Pony Conference doubleheader Sunday at the Richland School diamond.

The North won the opener, 5-2, and the South rebounded to score a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.

In Game 1, Crest Hill Sports Huddle pitcher Zach Wehrman earned the victory, going seven innings. He allowed four hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out six and walking nobody.

The North scored all five runs in the top of the first inning. Jalen Green (Belmont) led off with a single, Crest Hill’s Brendan LaPorta walked and Alek Trafton (Crest Hill) doubled to score Green.

St. Joe’s Nathan Nemanich then hit a three-run homer. St. Joe’s Ben Gould doubled and scored on a double steal after a walk to Wehrman.

The South scored one run in the second inning on a double from Channahon’s Tim Barys and an outfield error. In the sixth, the South scored on a single by Whiteford’s Cody Maly and a double by Whiteford’s Trevor Hicks.

Maly pitched the first two innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Hicks pitched the third and fourth innings, allowing no runs, one hit and striking out 3. Channahon’s Scott Allen pitched the fifth and sixth and allowed no runs, one hit and struck out two. Channahon’s Austin Markee worked a hitless, scoreless seventh.

In Game 2, after two scoreless innings, the South scored twice in the top of the third on a double by Channahon’s Scott Allen and singles from Hicks and Whiteford’s Patrick Lee and an outfield error.

The South added another run in the top of the fourth to make it 3-0. Whiteford’s Kevin Marconi singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield error. The South added two more runs in the sixth on a double by Channahon’s Jared Bisbee, a single from Fernando Rizo and a single from Whiteford’s Ethan Darley.

In the bottom of the sixth, the North scored its two runs to get within 5-2 on a walk to Crest Hill’s Jalen Sortor followed by doubles from Troy’s Colin Kaufman and St. Joe’s Nathan Nemanich.

The South added its final run in the top of the seventh on a single from Channahon’s Matt Holmes and a double from Maly.

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – With an 8-19 basketball season in the rearview mirror, Plainfield Central took an offseason step toward moving forward at the 30th annual Morris Boys Shootout.

The cover of the program heralded big numbers: “Ninety-Two Games, Thirty-Two Teams.’’

Twenty teams had winning records last season; 14 of those squads won at least 20 games.

Impressive company, to be sure, at the two-day event that ended Thursday. It’s a group Plainfield Central, with a lot of work and commitment, expects to join soon.

Chris Bowitz is on the right track. The Wildcats’ senior point guard wore a “Victory’’ T-shirt on the first day of the event.

“We’ve got to get that chemistry,’’ Bowitz said. “That’s all it is. We’ve got to get more teamwork. We can’t do things on our own. We’ve got to really

step it up on defense.’’

Shooting guard Scott Gustafson shared similar feelings with his backcourt partner.

“In the beginning of last season, I felt like we weren’t really playing as a team,’’ Gustafson said. “Toward the end, I felt like we started getting more comfortable with each other. I think we did get better toward the end of the season.’’

Plainfield Central finished 3-11 in the Southwest Prairie Conference. The Wildcats’ final game of the season was a loss to Oswego East in the semifinals of the Class 4A Joliet West Regional.

Part of the groundwork for advancing further in the postseason is put down during summer basketball. Central participated in events similar to the Morris Shootout at Oswego East and Plainfield East, as well as in the conference tournament.

“It definitely gets everyone on the same page before the season starts,’’ Gustafson

said. “We haven’t been winning very many, but wins and losses, they don’t really matter in the summer very much. It’s just time for us to grow together.’’

Justin Windt, a 6-foot-5 senior, and Bowitz are returning starters. Gustafson also was in the starting lineup for several games.

Juniors Sedrick Brooks and Matt Dvorak are among the varsity newcomers learning the ropes during the summer.

“Trying to work these guys in, get rid of some of those sophomore habits and play at the varsity level,’’ assistant coach Mark Hudson said.

“That’s why this summertime is good for them, this type of competition.’’

The 32 schools in the Morris Shootout included the top three teams from the Class 4A state tournament – defending champion Stevenson, runner-up Normal Community and third-place Bolingbrook.

Central’s opponents included Ottawa, Loyola and Brad-

ley-Bourbonnais, teams that won at least 17 games last season. That kind of competition could help the Wildcats turn last season’s near misses into wins.

“We don’t have the size we had last year, but we have toughness,’’ Hudson said.

“The guys are tough. The guys play hard. It’s just a matter of them working together, playing together as a unit, because anytime you bring guys up, there’s that adjustment period. That’s what the summer is for.

“By the time the season rolls around, what we’re expecting to see is these guys play together, to know what they’re doing when they’re playing off each other.’’

Gustafson expects that familiarity to contribute to more success.

“I feel like a lot of the guys we have now, we click,’’ Gustafson said. “We all know each other. I think we’re definitely going to have a better season this year, for sure.’’

STARS fans in for a double feature at Grundy County Fair SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS —The D’Arcy GMC Short Track Auto Racing Series will be return Saturday at Grundy County Speedway during the 111th annual Grundy County Fair.

Extra racing is planned because of the rain-shortened events of June 20. Pit gates will open at noon and the front gates at 3 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 4 p.m., and the first race at 4:30 p.m.

The STARS events June 20 were halted by rain after only the Illini Racing Series feature was run. In that feature, defending Illini Racing Series champion and current points leader Patrick Bruns took first. So, Saturday will be a double-feature night for the National Midgets, the Classic Modifieds (Dwarf), the Central States Region Minicups and the Legacy Midwest Racing Series.

In addition to the makeup feature for those four divisions, STARS will have a full night of events for all five divisions.

Every division will have qualifying, heat races and features.

The National Midget division feature will be the STARS fifth annual Freedom 50-lap event. The night will include the Hamilton brothers, Kyle and Nick, from Indianapolis making their return to STARS. They will be challenging current point leader Billy Hulbert of Channahon, who currently leads Brad Greenup, also of Channahon, by nine points. The top five in points is rounded out by Mario Clouser, Ryan Probst and Tyler Baran.

In the Classic Modifieds (Dwarf) division, Darren Ihrke leads by 44 points over Ed Ensor. Ihrke increased his points lead by setting fast time and winning his heat race June 20.

Bulls introduce first-round pick Bobby Portis

By JEFF ARNOLD The Associated Press CHICAGO – Growing up, Bobby Portis got accustomed to being the last player picked.

So he prided himself on being the one who out-worked everyone else.

Now, the Bulls’ first-round draft pick and the reigning Southeast Conference Player of the Year is ready to do it again.

With his new team already well stocked in the frontcourt, Portis understands working his way into coach Fred Hoiberg’s rotation won’t come easily. But armed with a work ethic he credits to his mother, Tina Edwards – who raised Portis and his three younger brothers in Little Rock, Arkansas – the 6-foot-11, 248-pound power forward is prepared to prove himself all over again.

“I’m a guy that grades himself on hard work,” Portis said at his introductory news conference Monday. “I’ve never been the guy that goes outside

my boundaries and does the things I can’t do.”

Portis grew up around gangs in a place he said where “no one really makes it.” Edwards made it clear to Portis that even though he wasn’t the most talented player, he could stand out through hard work.

“She always told me to be a sponge out on the court, to be that garbage man,” Portis said. “Even if I don’t get the ball, go get it off the offensive glass and put it back in.”

Portis took the message to heart, playing an emotionally charged style that drew the attention of Arkansas coach Mike Anderson. In Portis, Anderson saw a player he characterized Monday as a “self-made” McDonald’s All-American who transitioned into the SEC’s top player as a sophomore at Arkansas.

set that made Portis attractive to the Bulls.

Portis’ work ethic, Anderson said, is what makes the rookie special.

“He’s got that mindset that he don’t want to be a good player, he wants to be a great player,” Anderson said.

Some projected Portis as a possible lottery pick, but he fell to the 22nd overall pick at last week’s draft.

Bulls general manager Gar Forman admitted they never expected Portis to be available.

He and Hoiberg knew they could use Portis despite already having a frontcourt that includes Pau Gasol, Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson and Nikola Mirotic.

Hoiberg said the NBA’s summer league provides Portis a chance not to only learn the Bulls system, but to gain some confidence and showcase what kind of player he can be.

Hoiberg will go into training camp with an open mind about playing time, giving Portis the chance to play his way into the

Bulls’ rotation.

“Guys will earn their minutes,” Hoiberg said Monday. “I know (Portis] is going to work extremely hard.”

Portis doesn’t know any other way.

Portis also wants to make a name for himself as a Little Rock native after growing up with few basketball role models who grew up in his hometown outside of fellow natives Joe Johnson, who now plays for the Brooklyn Nets, and former NBA guard Derek Fisher.

Portis established a close relationship with former Arkansas star Corliss Richardson, who now serves as an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings.

“As a kid, I wanted to be that guy that my brothers can look up to and other kids can look up to,” Portis said. “Now I’ve got to that position, and I have to run with it and make myself a better basketball player so kids back home can look up to someone.”

Joliet treatment/recovery center has success with holistic approach

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Jerry Davis-El is a respected professional, a sought-after public speaker, a lauded counselor and a man working on his master’s degree en route to his doctorate.

He has a loving wife and a stable group of friends and family. He works hard and is optimistic about a bright future.

This Richton Park man is done with the darkness of his past.

A decade ago, Davis-El was caught in a web of addiction and crime, pinging in and out of jail – until he entered a treatment program at Stepping Stones in Joliet. But Davis-El prefers not to dwell on those days.

“I don’t want the past to define me, who I am,” Davis-El said. “Who I am is the man I am today.”

Davis-El recently spoke about transformation and social justice at Columbia University in New York. His goal is to open his own counseling center.

“I’m doing counseling right now, and I love it,” Davis-El said. “I’m honored, and I feel blessed to be able to help people turn their lives around.”

Not long ago – June 2010 – Davis-El was in their shoes.

He said many people didn’t think he’d make it. But Davis-El vowed to himself that he was done with addiction and jail.

“I did everything I needed to do,” Davis-El said. “I got myself in compliance, I got a job, I won a scholarship and went back to school. I turned my life around. I found out I wasn’t a bad person, that I had worth, that I could do something with my life.”

Davis-El said the people at Stepping Stones invested in him and believed in him.

“I just had to believe in myself,” he said.

Addressing the challenge

Overcoming the cycle of addiction and criminal behavior is extremely difficult, particularly since it breeds destructive low self-esteem, said Paul Lauridsen, a clinical director at Stepping Stones.

But there’s nothing better than seeing a person turn his life around, Lauridsen said.

“Often, the instances that are the most gratifying are people like Jerry who have come from very difficult circumstances,” he said. “If you look at that person’s description of their upbringing and their life, you might think this person never had a chance, or doesn’t have a chance.

“But then you look at their life now, and it really makes you think. Because people can change and do change.”

However, achieving that change is not an easy process, Lauridsen said, especially

Clients also might have high blood pressure or diabetes that needs addressing before moving forward with treatment.

“We also have to do a mental assessment,” Lauridsen said, “because sometimes people have mental health problems, and we have to identify whether that’s something we can deal with here or whether it’s best for them to seek elsewhere for treatment.”

Lauridsen said other factors also are considered. What are the client’s circumstances?

How was he or she raised?

What may have happened to him or her along the way?

Who is currently in his or her life, what are those people doing and where are they living?

“We have to look at all aspects of that person’s life

because all aspects can have an impact on their treatment,” Lauridsen said. “And in order for us to succeed, we have to have as much information as possible to overcome any potential difficulties and anything that could interfere with their recovery.”

Davis-El gives back

The results certainly are worth the effort, Lauridsen said. Davis-El would agree, and he is not the first client to do so. He is on call with Stepping Stones. It’s important to him to stay humble, grateful and genuine, while also reaching out and giving others hope.

His message? Hang on to your hopes and dreams, and surround yourself with good people.

“Everybody deserves a chance,” Davis-El said. “I got one, and they deserve one, too.”

Streamlined hip surgery available at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center

JOLIET – UPS driver John Marenholcas recently had a double hip replacement operation done at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

The procedure, a “total hip arthroplasty” by anterior approach, was performed by Dr. Anuj Puppala, one of the few physicians in the region who practice the THA approach.

One of the advantages of THA, anterior approach, is the shortened recovery time. Some patients go home the same day as surgery.

The average recovery time for a standard hip replacement is around three months.

Unlike the posterior approach, the anterior approach has no restrictions for motion; and, depending on the patient, some were declining therapy as soon as two weeks after their operation or even altogether.

Grand Prairie has annual Field Days

FRANKFORT – Grand Prairie Elementary School students spent the last week of school completing the “Final Tigers Countdown.” This included participating in Field Days, Exercise Day, Game Day and Read Around Grand Prairie.

Field Day was designed with a Wild, Wild West theme. Parent volunteers joined in the fun, and the event included inflatables from Windy City Popcorn Rentals and Randy from Awesome DJ’s, sponsored by the school’s athletics booster organization.

The Field Day event also included an indoor assembly with the Sky Squad, an extreme basketball slam dunk team from the Chicago Sky Women’s Basketball Team.

Morris Hospital honors volunteers for their years of dedicated service

More than 140 physicians from Illinois’ leading pediatric health organization, the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, announced their endorsement today of the Healthy Eating and Active Living Act. The HEAL Act invests in community prevention and Medicaid, through a small tax on sugary drinks. As Illinois faces a budget crisis, the HEAL Act can raise an estimated $600 million to prevent cuts in Medicaid and invest in healthier kids.

take one to two days. It’s sometimes hard to reach the patient when the results return. For that reason, doctors had long yearned for a test that would reveal whether the patient had a strep throat while he or she was still in the doctor’s office.

About 30 years ago, rapid strep tests were developed. The latest versions of the test are fast: Results come back within 15 minutes. And the tests appear to be highly accurate in detecting Group A strep. So this seemed like a major advance.

But, again, it’s not that simple. First, the rapid tests are quite accurate, but not perfect.

Second, we’ve learned that other kinds of strep besides Group A strep, and other kinds of bacteria entirely, can cause acute pharyngitis. The rapid strep tests don’t detect any of these bacteria. Admittedly, we don’t yet have solid evidence of the value of treating these bacteria.

Third, sometimes Group A strep live in our throat without causing any disease: There is no value in killing those strep. Finally, even when we test for all known bacteria, viruses and other microbes, we still can’t find a cause of sore throat in about 30 percent of patients.

So there’s still a lot to learn about a medical problem that causes more days lost from work than all labor disputes combined. Yet we’ve cut federal funding for medical research by 20 percent over the past decade.

Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I responded to a reader’s question about acute pharyngitis -- inflammation of the throat caused by infection with bacteria or viruses.

I was taught that diagnosing and treating a patient with a sore throat was not complicated: The sore throat was caused either by Group A streptococcus (“strep,” a kind of bacteria) or by a virus. If a throat culture showed strep, you treated it with penicillin. Simple.

But in my view (some colleagues disagree), it’s not that simple.

The risk from an untreated infection with Group A strep is much lower today in the United States than it was 70 years ago. That means that the value of treatment is reduced. But the chance of side effects from the treatment -- antibiotics -- is not reduced. Penicillin can cause side effects ranging from a bad rash to a life-threatening drop in blood pressure. A doctor never wants to prescribe a treatment when its risk is worse than the risk from the disease.

If a doctor knows for sure that a patient has a strep throat, the value of antibiotic treatment today is still greater than the risk. The problem is that antibiotics are of no proven value if a patient does not have a strep throat. In addition, it is hard for a doctor to know for sure that a patient has a strep throat without a positive throat culture. An eminent pediatrician, Dr. Burtis Breese, once gave his colleagues some wise advice: “If you are entirely comfortable selecting which patients with pharyngitis to treat with penicillin, perhaps you don’t fully understand the situation.”

It was her 101st. When I asked her about her family, she spent some time sobbing over the recent news that her eldest son has cancer.

My first thought – and that of several others – was, why was she told?! Edna is frail and in poor health.

She has seen her share of tragedies and losses in her long life, and I think she should have been spared this devastating news.

Hearing her sob on her birthday broke my heart.

However, a couple of my friends disagreed with me.

Dear Abby: I recently received a Facebook message from a 47-year-old mother of four who believes she is my daughter. While I do not remember her mother and have communicated this to the woman, the pictures she sent of her children somewhat resemble my family.

I’m happily married with two sons, and my wife is aware of this and will support any decision I make. I’m conflicted about the choices before me and the impact they may have on her family and mine.
