JOLIET – The cultures of Africa, Italy, Ireland, Slovenia and Mexico all piled into the Joliet Area Historical Museum on Saturday for Multicultural Palooza.

The event featured displays by local ethnic groups, as well as a variety of dance and music performances throughout the day.

Ryan Niegelsen and his family, of East Troy, Wis., were in town for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 Nationals. They stopped by the museum Saturday morning for a little quiet time ahead of the afternoon and evening drag racing qualifiers.

“We wanted to give the kids a little culture,” Niegelsen said.

Upstairs, Edward and Janice Wood were setting up their display on Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, which passed through Plainfield on its way north. Part of their presentation was called “Follow the Drinking Gourd.”

QUICK NEWS Sunny Hill celebrates new courtyard JOLIET – Sunny Hill Nursing Home residents and guests recently celebrated a newly renovated courtyard.

The courtyard includes new outdoor furniture, raised garden beds and a flagpole. The $102,000 project was funded

by The Friends of Sunny Hill Inc., a volunteer organization dedicated to providing a high quality of life for residents at the county-owned nursing home.

“The renovation of this courtyard is the final phase of creating three beautiful, peaceful, safe and accessible outdoor areas for Sunny Hill residents to enjoy and continue their love of nature and gardening,” Sunny Hill Administrator Karen Sorbero said in a county-issued news release about the new courtyard.

Sorbero also is the founder of Friends of Sunny Hill Inc. The courtyard was dedicated

Jan. 6.

Other displays offered a bite to eat. The Spanish Community Center had fresh fruit and the Irish American Society of County Will provided soda bread, while the Slovenian American Heritage table offered bite-sized bits of walnut potica, the traditional nut roll bread.

This was the first year for the event, and organizers picked a busy Saturday with the races, Taste of Joliet and a Joliet Slammers game also going on.

Bill Ferguson, who helped organize the palooza and was representing the Irish, said the idea was to provide an event to celebrate all of the area’s many ethnicities.

Ferguson, who grew up in Joliet’s Italian neighborhood and was a school principal at St. Joseph School, part of the city’s Slovenian neighborhood, noted his children are part Irish, Scottish, Slovenian and German.

“They used to be called Heinz 57s,” he joked.

Sunny Hill, 421 Doris Ave. in Joliet, has had a number of renovations this year, including a buffet and renovated kitchen completed in February, a renovated front lobby, the installation of a new generator and a repaired roof.

The county also has added a new therapy room, classroom, activity room, nursing suites and new offices this year.

Will County Historical Society marks 50 years LOCKPORT – The Will County Historical Society will celebrate its 50th anniversary at a Founder’s Day picnic on Saturday.

The picnic will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Heritage Village, Route 171 and Second Avenue in Lockport. The picnic will include a tour of Heritage Village at 2 p.m.

All current and past members of the Will County Historical Society have been invited, according to a news release about the anniversary.

The Will County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving local history for future generations. The society owns and maintains the former office of the I&M Canal Commissioners, 803 S. State St. in Lockport. The office is now the Will County Historical Society Museum & Research Center.

The society maintains a collection of artifacts, research materials and exhibits to tell the history of the area.

Classes offer fitness and confidence, too

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Autumn Matan tried multiple weight loss techniques, all to no avail.

At about 270 pounds, the 38-year-old Joliet resident joined a local gym, tried dieting and even had adjustable gastric banding surgery to control her food intake. Nothing seemed to work.

But about five years ago, as she looked through the window at her daughters training at a mixed martial arts gym, she thought it looked fun.

Matan started going to training sessions and classes at Surviving Under Direct Attack International Training Center in Joliet. She lost about 140 pounds within a year.

“Joining was the best thing I’ve ever done,” said Matan, who has since kept off the weight and made positive life changes.

As MMA programs like the UFC, PrideFC and Strikeforce have had a rising fan base the past 10 years, MMA gyms and dojos have started to see more people train to get fit or lose weight rather than compete in the cage.

Weight loss tool Brian Bishop, head of the Carlson Gracie Team MMA gym in Channahon and Aurora, said the popularity of MMA skyrocketed after the finale of the first Ultimate Fighter reality show on Spike TV in 2005.

“In the early days, it was more about street self-defense.

We would train the military and law enforcement. Now weight loss is huge with our members,” Bishop said.

“Those people are most of our members,” said Ron Hill, co-owner of SUDA, 117 Republic Ave. “We have families, parents and children come in

to train together. We have people come in grossly obese. We have skinny people. These are normal people. That’s the big thing.”

Bishop said members come in all shapes, sizes and levels of income.

“We have lots of professional athletes and successful business people,” Bishop said.

“Somebody is doing really well in their job and somebody else comes up and robs them. The punk makes him feel worthless. We build the skills and

self-confidence to fight back.

“But the majority of our people are those that want to train like the fighters and lose weight.”

New bar is just the beginning, owners say

By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – A Naperville couple has chosen Bolingbrook as the roll-out location for what they hope is the next big restaurant concept.

Say Beignet Coffee & Wine Bar opened earlier this month in a corner storefront at the Promenade Bolingbrook bringing a unique menu of coffee, wine, pastries and sandwiches to pair with live entertainment.

Edwin and Vivian Rios opened Say Beignet – named for the New Orleans-style French pastry – after wrapping up a 10-year lease operating Rumba, a Latin American dance club and restaurant in the trendy River North neighborhood of Chicago. The couple worked alongside each other at Rumba, all the while planning their next project.

“It was about an hour drive downtown [to Rumba] and it just wore us out, so we figured we would do something closer,” Vivian Rios said.

The 2,500-square-foot

restaurant offers seating for 80 inside and for 55 on an outdoor patio. Edwin Rios called the design “very culinary” with an “open look to it.”

“It’s got a homey-feel with fireplaces and stone walls. We wanted it to be warm and welcoming, but cool and different at the same time,” Edwin Rios said. “It’s very contemporary and feel-good.”

The menu boasts baked items, notably Vivian’s own recipe for beignets – a pastry made from deep-fried choux paste – and salads, sandwiches, flatbreads and appetizers, along with coffee, wine and tea options.

“It’s built for a slightly older set of demographics,” Edwin Rios said. “We have been attracting a lot of women because of the coffee and upscale nature of the room.”

The entertainment will top it all off, he said.

“We’re really working hard to try to find quality entertainment. It’s been thoughtfully put together so in the evenings we will have a beautiful patio with a piano that rolls inside and outside.

We really wanted to push the live entertainment right out into the high exposure area in the Promenade,” Edwin said, adding that they’re aiming for a “vivacious, New Orleans-type jazz” sound for the entertainment.

The couple already has their eyes on more locations for the Say Beignet concept.

“This is our prototype,” Edwin said. “It’s our opportunity to analyze the business

model, adjust it and make revisions for our second, third and fourth locations.”

He hopes to open additional restaurants within the next few years – possibly a second by next summer – and mentioned downtown Naperville, Orland Park, Woodfield and St. Charles as potential landing spots.

But Bolingbrook was their first choice.

“This is a highly motivat-

ed town,” Edwin said. “They wanted a high-quality facility and they are very easy to do business with. It was an aggressive move on both parts.”

The couple believes the concept could be a category killer.

“We’re not Starbucks or Panera – we’re something else.

Obviously, the cafe concept is defined by Starbucks, but Starbucks is one-dimensional.

It’s coffee alone,” he said. “Say Beignet is a fully encompassing cafe experience.”

“There’s nothing around here quite like this,” Vivian added.

Made-to-order burger place coming to Joliet

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The owners of a new burger restaurant slated to open this winter at Jefferson Street and Caterpillar Drive say Joliet is the perfect market for its family-focused, “fast casual” focus.

“Our concept is really geared for families,” said Ardag Tachian, site developer for Mooyahs, a Texas-based chain that offers made-to-order burgers, hand-cut fries and milkshakes.

“Whatever we do in our brand, menu, marketing, decor, it’s all done with the family in mind,” Tachian said.

“Joliet is a well-entrenched community with multi-generations of families, and frankly I think we are going to do really well here.”

Mooyahs is one of three restaurants that will be developed at the site, along with a Chipotle Mexican Grill and Potbelly Sandwich Shop.

Tachian said he was excited to be at a site with other fast-casual restaurants.

“The fast-casual segment is the fastest-growing part of the restaurant industry,” Tachian said, noting that the quality of food and guest service experience is superior to that of quick-service restaurants.

“Quick-service restaurants

have the food at the ready.

Fast-casual prepares the food after the order is complete,” Tachian said. “We don’t have heat lamps and that kind of thing, where they just put stuff into a bag. We don’t drop the fries or the burgers until the order is complete.”

Mooyahs puts an emphasis on freshness, he said. Buns are baked daily on-site. The restaurant also offers a variety of fresh, grilled and fried sides, toppings and condiments.

Mooyahs opened restaurants in Glenview and Lombard this year, and Tachian said the company expects to launch another seven this year in the Chicago area, in-

cluding Joliet.

Kal Mohammed, the franchisee for the Joliet Mooyahs, said he expects the restaurant will open sometime this winter. The restaurant will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Mohammed anticipated it would employ 20 to 30 people.

He said the area, which lies just north of the Menards/ Wal-Mart complex, is a perfect place for a restaurant.

“It’s a good market that has not reached its full potential,” Mohammed said. “We believe that with the mix of other tenants and the high traffic that it will work our real well for us.”

Potbelly, out of Chicago, offers hot submarine sand-

wiches, soup, shakes, malts, smoothies and cookies.

Chipotle, out of Denver, specializes in gourmet burritos and tacos.

In addition to the restaurants, the center also will feature an Aldi’s grocery store.

Foundation work on the shopping center – the site of the former Joliet Dodge dealership – began a couple of weeks ago.

The developers, the fatherand-son team of Jerry and Matt Cairo out of Chicago, also developed outlots in the Menards-Wal-Mart shopping center for the Applebee’s restaurant and the Starbucks shop.

Highway commissioner denied his dream home County says house just doesn’t fit in industrial zoning

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Township Highway Commissioner Sam Reichert has a problem.

His two-acre parcel of land on 143rd Street in Plainfield – which he one day wants to call home – is zoned industrial.

Reichert said he and his wife bought the property 10 years ago and underwent a lot of expense to clean it up.

Reichert said county officials told him years ago if he wanted to build a home there, he could – as long as he obtained the proper special-use permit.

That was the case for several years until in late 2012 when the county adopted new zoning laws prohibiting residences in industrially zoned areas. It wasn’t until last year when Reichert sought a building permit from the county that he found out the rules changed.

“I was shocked when they told me they didn’t allow it anymore,” Reichert said. “I thought ‘What? Are you kidding me? You guys are joking right?’ ” Reichert built a warehouse on the property years ago to store his Route 66 merchandise and collectibles. He’s currently building a second facility with an attached residence, but plans have been put on hold.

Reichert said what pains him the most is the $75,000 – a ballpark figure – he spent digging up tens of thousand of tires found buried there.

“We hand-loaded them

in trucks,” he said. “I have pictures of what the property looked like back when he bought it. We’ve spent our life savings doing this, trying to make something nice.”

He said he never would have gone through all that trouble if he knew he wouldn’t be able to live there one day.

In April, Reichert’s request for a special-use permit was denied by the county’s zoning administrator based on the fact it no longer exists within the county’s ordinances, said Curt Paddock, director of the land use department.

Reichert appealed the ruling. The full County Board this month looked into the matter, referring it back to the county’s land use and development committee for further review.

A handful of members called the rule change a “mistake.”

Paddock disagreed. He said the rule change was part of an 18-month process during which board members mulled over all of the county’s zoning ordinances.

“Why do you even have the notion of having an industrial use versus a residential use?

It’s because, generally speaking, they are found to be rather incompatible,” Paddock said. “You’ve got large stockpiles of industrial materials, heavy trucks moving in and out. It’s not a place you want to have people living.”

Will County Board Member Reed Bible, D-Plainfield, said the change is an example of “unintended consequences.”

“I can’t believe we’re going to allow an oversight in crafting of these zoning ordinances,” he said. “We shouldn’t let

the black letter of the law get in the way of the intent of the law.”

Tom Weigel, R-New Lenox, was the lone “no” vote on June 19. He argued that he wanted the rule change upheld but

make an exception in this one particular case. Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Tatroe advised Weigel and the board on June 19 that would be an inappropriate procedure.

opment Committee has a few options. The committee could change the zoning map from industrial to residential. It could change the zoning law again to allow residences in areas zoned industrial. Or, the committee could allow the ordinance to stand as is, preventing Reichert from building his home on the land.

hope of their own members, and the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, to help each other navigate the world of addiction.

These programs have helped millions of people throughout the world.

Crystal saw a need for a program that also included professional information, so she combined the two with Serenity Steps.

Each meeting begins with a speaker in the area of substance abuse who talks about things such as how it affects the family, recognizing when you are being emotionally manipulated, why addicts can’t just stop and why it’s so important to be in recovery.

“We want to jump in and rescue [our addicts], and take care of the situation,” Crystal said. “It’s about learning to readjust the family dynamics, doing things differently than you have been and what addiction means as a disease.”

Then participants talk about how things are going in their lives. They can ask questions of the facilitator. If one person is really feeling in trouble, others give feedback on how they handled a similar issue.

The next Serenity Steps meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 18. The evening’s

speaker will be Brian Hazard, BA, CADC, from Stepping Stones, and he’ll be talking about enabling.

All meetings are held at Healing Waters Yoga studio, 25949 W. Shepley Road in Minooka. The group can be reached at info@serenitysteps.org or Facebook@ SerenitySteps.

There’s a little break in July, but meetings resume and run the Fridays of Aug. 1, 15 and 29 at 7 p.m. September meetings can be found on the group’s Facebook page.

That’s what this is all about,” Crystal said. “This is a safe, confidential place to talk about what’s going on.”

Back in April I met up with local mom, Crystal, whose son is a recovering addict. Kyle began using drugs when he was just 14, starting with marijuana and moving on to illegal prescription painkillers and drinking.

Crystal attended the Heroin Forum at Minooka Community High School because she had something to share with other families going through similar ordeals.

While Kyle was in Rosecrance Rehabilitation Center, the family was introduced to new ways of dealing with their son and their own lives.

They learned about things like not enabling their child – no matter how hard it was – and what it means to be

co-dependent.

But when life returned to the new “normal,” Crystal found she had no one to turn to in our area who could continue educating her about drugs and alcohol, or to share her own frustrations with.

After driving back and forth to Naperville to attend meetings for a time, Crystal, who is studying to become a licensed clinical addictions counselor, started plans to begin a group in this area for families and individuals suffering the effects of substance use disorders.

The group, Serenity Steps, started June 6 and is now meeting on a regular basis.

The program Crystal set up differs from many 12-step groups, which do not include professionals in their discussions. Programs like Al-Anon, Al-Ateen and Families Anonymous rely on the experience, strength and

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One week before Brian Hastings, 26, of Joliet was diagnosed with testicular cancer on New Year’s Eve 2012, he dreamed a bear had chased him up a ladder.

At first, Brian cowered in a corner. Finally, he reached out and grabbed the bear by the head. Brian later interpreted that to mean he was tackling cancer head on, said Brian’s mother, Linda Hastings of Joliet.

The bear paw became Brian’s personal symbol of victory. Family friends even printed T-shirts depicting that paw for Brian’s fundraiser last year, Linda said. But Brian did more than just address and come to terms with his cancer.

He blossomed under it.

As runner, vegetarian, avid juicer and embracer of holistic living, Brian picked and chose which surgeries to undergo and which to decline. Despite multiple rounds of chemother-

apy, Brian never became sick from any of the agents.

“He even put on 10 pounds instead of losing weight,” Linda said.

But that’s not the end of Brian’s inspiration.

A graphic artist, Brian, while battling cancer, returned to school. He supported others in their cancer walks. He spoke to groups of 150 people about the benefits of making healthy choices and living each day to the fullest, said Tom Hastings of Joliet, Brian’s father.

“People listened to him like he was a celebrity,” Tom said.

“He never looked down on anybody.”

Brian put spontaneity into his life. He took cross country trips on a whim. He told people, “I’m doing this my way,” when they questioned his approach to the cancer, Linda said. People couldn’t believe how much vitality Brian exuded, Tom said.

“He liked to explore things,” Tom said. “It was like

Evidence being tested in shootings case The ASSOCIATED PRESS DWIGHT – Authorities say evidence is being tested as they continue the investigation into a Dwight shooting that left a mother and daughter dead.

Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond told the Decatur Herald and Review that state police, Dwight police and investiga-

tors are “making significant progress.”

Sixty-year-old Donna Denker and 30-year-old Kelli Denker were killed June 14 in the central Illinois town. A 23-year-old man also was shot and is recovering. A $10,000 reward is available for information in the case.

Village President Jared Anderson said he’s confident investigators will be able to

Donna Denker was a retired mental health technician, and Kelli Denker was a manager at the Dwight Dairy Queen.

Joliet health advocate battled cancer on his terms until the end during his sophomore year.

“He was not the guy that would start a conversation,” Tom said.

Playing sports helped bond Brian and his younger brother Nicholas Hastings of Joliet.

Nicholas preferred basketball; Brian enjoyed art. The two had little in common when they were very young. As they grew older, that changed, Nicholas said.

“We could talk about things in life and have the exact same perspective,” Nicholas said.

Although losing a son at age 26 – Brian died March 31 – seems like a tragedy, Linda is thankful the family had Brian in their lives this long. A battle with pneumonia when Brian was 5 led doctors to test him for cystic fibrosis.

Brian did not have cystic fibrosis, but if he had, Linda said his estimated life expectancy was about age 16.

“We could have lost him sooner,” Linda said.

Mostly, she’s believes Brian is still moving around the world and helping people. The skeptical need only ask the Hastings about the doves. Because a bear paw was not one of the available symbols, Tom said they chose to add a dove to Brian’s tombstone.

Soon afterward, doves began appearing and approaching the family wherever they went, cooing and pausing, as if in conversation.

“I truly believe God put Brian on this earth for a reason and he did what he was supposed to do,” Linda said.

“He has now moved to bigger and better things.”

family while learning a valuable skill.

Carlson Gracie and SUDA have been training people for years and have seen fighters make it to high levels of competition. But the goal is to give anyone a shot at learning self-defense, gaining self-confidence and getting fit.

That means MMA gym members will train like fighters from coaches that train top fighters. But members don’t have to fight.

“Fighting is a small portion of what we do,” Hill said.

“People say, ‘I get to train like a fighter, but I don’t have to fight.’ ” Before Matan joined SUDA, she struggled with her own confidence.

“I went through a lot,” she said. “When I was younger I was molested, and it messed with my mind. I was emotionally not confident, secure. I let people say what they wanted to about me. Now, I definitely have a voice.”

Matan recently moved to a new place, but she considers SUDA her first home. She exited her previous marriage and is a working single mother.

Her 16-year-old daughter, Ashley Matan, had to overcome hurdles of her own.

“I used to be bullied and I didn’t know what to do,” said Ashley, 16, who started training in fifth grade. “Now, I have more confidence to stand up and do something about it.”

St. John’s Church Settlers from Germany, Switzerland, England and Sweden came to the Mokena area in the early 1830s.

In the beginning, itinerant preachers held services in homes or the schoolhouse. The Rev. William Meyer became the first resident minister in January 1862.

In March of the same year, 30 families formed the German United Evangelical St. John’s Church. During the next six months, the first church was constructed on the Public Square (northwest corner of Second and Union Streets), and was dedicated on Sept. 20, 1862.

As the congregation grew, the old, small church became too small, and a new, larger English Gothic style church, shown in the “then” photograph, was constructed and dedicated on April 16, 1923.

The “now” image shows a similar view of St. John’s Church today. In 1925, the original 1862 church structure was moved by the Milton and Roy Kropp to the southwest corner of Division and First Streets and converted into housing units.

Quinn, Rauner tout their values to voters

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn attended Chicago’s gay pride parade Sunday, trying to capitalize on his opponent’s comments about same-sex marriage, while Republican challenger Bruce Rauner spoke at a Mexican restaurant, trying to convince a group that traditionally votes for Democrats that he’s the candidate who shares their values.

With months to go before the November election, both candidates talked about helping families.

Quinn spoke of how families “in Illinois deserve the opportunity to come together,” while Rauner told a Hispanic audience that he wants to help make it easier to provide for their families.

On Chicago’s North Side, surrounded by participants in one of the largest gay pride parades in the United States, Quinn said

CHICAGO – About a million people packed Chicago streets Sunday for the first Gay Pride Parade since Illinois legalized gay marriage last month.

Many who came early to grab a good spot along the route said the new law makes this year’s parade more festive – not a political statement. Last year’s parade attendees used the event to continue their fight for gay marriage rights.

Charlie Gurion, who with David Wilk became the first couple in Cook County to get a same-sex marriage license in February, said he said there was a different feel to this parade.

“I think there is definitely like an even more sense of pride now knowing that in Illinois you can legally get married now,” Gurion said, as he posed for photograph after photograph with Wilk at the parade. “I think it is a huge thing and everybody’s over the moon that they can do it now.”

The event has grown by a third in recent years – 1 million people attended the 2013 parade according to Chicago police, up from 750,000 people in 2011.

Gov. Quinn signs legislation helping military families

MASCOUTAH – Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation making it easier for military families moving to Illinois to enroll their children in schools in the state.

The law was signed Saturday by the Chicago Democrat in west central Mascoutah.

Sponsored by Democratic state Rep. Eddie Lee Jackson and state Sen. Melinda Bush, the legislation streamlines the health and academic record transfer process for out-ofstate elementary and high school students with one or more parents serving in the military.

Advocates say the change eliminates unnecessary delays preventing children from being in school.

Quinn said the state has a responsibility to make sure military families’ moves to Illinois are worry-free.

Quincy company closing after 134 years

QUINCY – A Quincy company that has sold lawn and garden products for 134 years is closing.

Geo. Keller and Sons Co. officials say the business will close within the next month.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports that company officials cited a steady decline in business over the past several years.

Kris Keller said in a statement that it “wasn’t how we wanted it to end, but it could not be helped with the continuing challenges of today’s economy.” Keller called it “the end of an era.”

The store employs about 20 people.

George Keller, a wagon maker and black smith, founded the company in 1880 with J.P. Wenzel, who built farm wagons.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Police: 9 shot on Bourbon Street in New Orleans NEW ORLEANS – Two men exchanged gunfire early Sunday on the city’s always-crowded Bourbon Street in the celebrated French Quarter and nine people were shot in the crossfire, including two who were critically wounded, police said.

Images captured from a surveillance camera above a bar showed people running down the famous street in the chaos of the shooting at 2:45 a.m., NOLA.com The Times-Picayune reported. Police and emergency workers responded immediately and attended to victims as other revelers looked on.

New Orleans Police Chief Ronal Serpas said six victims were hospitalized in stable condition.

The other victim’s condition was not available. Some of them were tourists. Their names have not been released.

Serpas said at a news conference in the French Quarter that the victims were shot “by two cowardly young men trying to hurt each other.”

Crews fighting Arizona fire get break from winds VERNON, Ariz. – Hundreds of firefighters dealt with hot, dry conditions Sunday as they tried to build containment lines along portions of a wildfire that has charred nearly 8 square miles in eastern Arizona’s White Mountains and led to evacuations.

But crews got a break from the winds that had whipped the flames in recent days.

With the blaze holding steady, firefighters were able to make headway with more burnout operations along the fire’s western flank, said Margaret Hangan, a spokeswoman with the Southwest Area Incident Management Team.

“Right now, it’s not hurting us. But it’s not helping either,” Hangan said of the weather.

Arizona and neighboring New Mexico, where fire danger also remains high, have been waiting for monsoon season to develop and bring with it much-needed moisture. Large portions of both states have been dealing with severe to extreme drought.

5 detained, 26 dead in India building collapses NEW DELHI – Police in southern India detained five construction company officials Sunday as rescuers using gas cutters and shovels searched for dozens of workers believed buried in the rubble of a building that collapsed during monsoon rains. It was one of two weekend building collapses that killed at least 26 people.

Nearly 90 contract workers were believed to have been in the basement of the 11-story structure to collect their wages when it collapsed Saturday on the outskirts of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.

Police said eight died on the spot and another seven succumbed to injuries in a hospital.

Another 20 people have been pulled out alive.

Al-Qaida splinter declares new Islamic caliphate

By RYAN LUCAS The Associated Press BAGHDAD – The al-Qaida breakaway group that has seized much of northeastern Syria and huge tracts of neighboring Iraq formally declared the establishment of a new Islamic state on Sunday and demanded allegiance from Muslims worldwide.

With brutal efficiency, the Sunni extremist group has carved out a large chunk of territory that has effectively erased the border between Iraq and Syria and laid the foundations of its proto-state.

But the declaration, made on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, could trigger a wave of infighting among the Sunni militant factions that formed a loose alliance in the blitz across Iraq and impact the broader international jihadist movement, especially the

future of a-Qaida.

The spokesman for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant declared the group’s chief, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the leader of the new caliphate, or Islamic state, and called on Muslims everywhere, not just those in areas under the organization’s control, to swear loyalty to al-Baghdadi and support him.

“The legality of all emirates, groups, states and organizations becomes null by the expansion of the caliph’s authority and the arrival of its troops to their areas,” said the spokesman, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, in an audio statement posted online.

“Listen to your caliph and obey him. Support your state, which grows every day.”

Al-Adnani loosely defined the Islamic state’s territory as running from northern Syria to the Iraqi province of Diyala – a vast stretch of

land straddling the border that is already largely under the Islamic State’s control. He also said that with the establishment of the caliphate, the group was changing its name to just the Islamic State, dropping the mention of Iraq and the Levant.

Muslim extremists have long dreamed of recreating the Islamic state, or caliphate, that ruled over the Middle East, much of North Africa and beyond in various forms over the course of Islam’s 1,400-year history.

It was unclear what immediate impact the declaration would have on the ground in Syria and Iraq, though experts predicted it could herald infighting among the Sunni militants who have joined forces with the Islamic State in its fight against Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his Shiite-led government.

Despite the grousing, voters rarely fire lawmakers

By CONNIE CASS The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Congress is wildly unpopular.

In fact, two-thirds of Americans want their own House member booted. And the tea party is dogging longtime Republican lawmakers.

So incumbents are sweating out this year’s election, right?

Nope. Mostly they’re not.

People talk about throwing the bums out, but voters keep sending the same bunch back in.

More than halfway through the party primaries, 293 House and Senate members have completed their quests for renomination.

The score: Incumbents 291, challengers 2.

Granted, one of those two losses was a shocker. A virtual unknown, Dave Brat, toppled House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia in a Republican primary.

Two longtime lawmakers – Republican Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi and

Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel of New York – barely clung to nominations to their seats Tuesday.

But those rare exciting races that draw national attention are misleading. Most of the House candidates, about 60 percent so far, didn’t have a soul running against them.

Only a few faced a challenger who posed a real threat. No senator has been defeated yet.

What about November, when Republicans and Democrats face off in the general election?

It looks to be a dramatic midterm, all right, with Republicans pushing to seize control of the Senate. More incumbents will be vulnerable in the general election than the primaries. Still, the vast majority of sitting lawmakers are snug in their seats.

Over the past five decades, voters have routinely returned 9 of 10 incumbent candidates to the House. Senate races are a bit less predictable, but usually more than 80 percent of incumbents win.

Consider 2010, which was

a “bad year” for incumbents.

A wave of angry voters swept Republicans into the House majority. Fifty-eight House members were ousted that year, nearly all of them Democrats. President Barack Obama called it a “shellacking.”

Yet even in that remarkable midterm, voters rehired 85 percent of Congress members who were on the ballot.

This year, Congress logged a confidence rating of 7 percent, the lowest Gallup has measured for any institution, ever. People don’t put much attachment to their own representative anymore, either.

An Associated Press-GfK poll last month found that 65 percent of Americans say their own House member should lose.

So why do these people keep winning?

It’s harder for challengers to sell themselves to voters.

Incumbents wield tremendous advantages. They raise big bucks from special interests, use their congressional offices to send voters mass

mailings, build ties to businesses and advocacy groups in their districts, and benefit from name recognition. They have staff members back home working to keep constituents happy.

“If you know them, if you helped their father or sister or relative or friend, if you go to their events and show interest, if you do good staff work, you’re going to go back,” said former Rep. Connie Morella, who served 16 years in Congress.

A Republican in a heavily Democratic Maryland district, she was re-elected seven times, until her district boundaries were redrawn by Democrats to push her out in 2002.

Political calculations in the redistricting process every 10 years have contributed to most districts becoming solidly Republican or solidly Democratic.

“The gerrymandering is terrible,” said Morella, now a professor at American University. “Few districts are truly competitive anymore.”

Benghazi case unfolds against political backdrop

By ERIC TUCKER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The first prosecution arising from the Benghazi attacks is playing out in the federal courthouse blocks from both the White House and Capitol Hill, an appropriate setting for a case that has drawn stark lines between President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress.

The criminal proceedings could provide new insights into the 2012 attacks that killed four Americans and will serve as the latest test of the U.S. legal system’s ability to handle terrorism suspects captured overseas.

Unfolding during an election year, the case against alleged mastermind Ahmed Abu Khattala could help shape the legacies of Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, and spill over into the potential 2016 presidential candidacy of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Untangling the law from the politics may prove especially challenging for the public, given how prominent the attacks on the diplomatic compound in the eastern Libyan city have become in U.S. political discourse.

“What’s going to matter to the public more than anything else is the result, and I think it’s going to only diffuse some of the ongoing Benghazi conspiracy theories if the Obama administration is going to be able to successfully obtain a conviction in this case,” said American University law professor Stephen Vladeck, a national security law expert.

Still, he said the case raises the same legal issues as past terrorism prosecutions and should not by itself be viewed as a referendum on the Obama administration.

“The story of this case is not the story of the Obama administration’s reaction to Benghazi,” he added. “The story of this case is those who

were responsible for Benghazi and those who need to be held accountable for the four deaths that resulted.”

A 10-minute court appearance amid tight security Saturday was the American public’s first concrete sense of Abu Khatalla, the Libyan militant accused by the U.S. government of being a ringleader of attacks on Sept. 11, 2012.

U.S. special forces captured him in Libya during a nighttime raid two weeks ago, and he was transported to the U.S. aboard a Navy ship, where he was interrogated by federal agents. He was flown by military helicopter to Washington.

Prosecutors have yet to reveal details about their case, although the broad outlines are in a two-page indictment unsealed Saturday.

He pleaded not guilty to a single conspiracy charge punishable by up to life in prison, but the Justice Department expects to bring additional charges soon that

could be more substantial and carry more dire consequences.

For instance, a threecount criminal complaint filed last year and unsealed after his capture charged Abu Khattala with killing a person during an attack on a federal facility — a crime that carries the death penalty.

His capture revived a debate on how to treat suspected terrorists from foreign countries, as criminal defendants with the protections of the U.S. legal system or as enemy combatants who should be interrogated for intelligence purposes and put through the military tribunal process at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“If we’re doing to do this for everybody engaged in terrorism around the world, we’d better start building prisons by the dozens,” Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Only about four dozen of the 435 House seats are considered in play this year, meaning either party might conceivably win them in November. Many of those are open seats, vacated by lawmakers who are retiring or seeking another office.

In dozens of other cases in the House, only one of the two major parties will even have a name on the November ballot.

In the Senate, about a dozen of the 36 seats up for election might be truly competitive.

Turnout is low in midterm elections, usually about 40 percent in the fall and often abysmal for primaries. Voters may feel they lack true choice, although Cantor’s loss shows that establishment candidates can be ousted.

“There just aren’t that many real races,” said Larry Sabato, a veteran election forecaster at the University of Virginia. “So even if people don’t like their representative, they don’t necessarily vote for the challenger from the other party, or vote at all.”

NATION BRIEF ‘Designing Women’ star Meshach Taylor dies Meshach Taylor, who played a lovable ex-convict surrounded by boisterous Southern belles on the sitcom “Designing Women” and appeared in numerous other TV and film roles, died of cancer at age 67, his agent said Sunday.

Taylor died Saturday at his home near Los Angeles, according to agent Dede Binder.

Taylor got an Emmy nod for his portrayal of Anthony Bouvier on “Designing Women” from 1986 to 1993. Then he costarred for four seasons on another successful comedy, “Dave’s World,” as the best friend of a newspaper humor columnist.

Other series included the cult favorite “Buffalo Bill” and the Nickelodeon comedy “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide.”

Taylor’s movie roles included a window dresser in the 1987 comedy-romance “Mannequin” as well as “Damien: Omen II.”

Seoul: North Korea fires more short-range missiles

By JUNG–YOON CHOI The Associated Press SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea fired two shortrange Scud missiles into its eastern waters Sunday, a South Korean official said, in an apparent test just days after the country tested what it called new precision-guided missiles.

A South Korean military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing department rules, said the missiles were fired from Wonsan and are presumed to be shortrange Scud ballistic missiles.

The official added that the military is determining what

kind of Scud missiles the projectiles were. South Korean media quoted officials as saying the missiles are presumed to be Scud-C missiles, the same as ones fired in March.

North Korea fired the missiles without designating no-sail zones, which the South Korean military views as provocative.

North Korea regularly testfires missiles and artillery, both to refine its weapons and to express its anger over various developments in Seoul and Washington. North Korea has in recent days criticized alleged South Korean artillery firing drills near a disputed maritime boundary in the

Yellow Sea that has been the scene of several bloody skirmishes between the rival nations in recent years. The missile displays also come days before the leader of North Korea’s only major ally, Chinese President Xi Jinping, is set to meet with South Korean President Park Geun-hye. Seoul and Beijing have long pressed North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions.

JOHANNESBURG – The murder trial of Oscar Pistorius resumes Monday after one month during which mental health experts evaluated the athlete to determine if he has an anxiety disorder that could have influenced his actions on the night he killed girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Thokozile Masipa is expected to receive the conclusions of a panel of one psychologist and three psychiatrists who were instructed to assess whether the double-amputee runner was capable of understanding the wrongfulness of his act when he shot Steenkamp through a closed toilet door in his home on Valentine’s Day last year. The assessments of a panel at a state psychiatric hospital could determine whether he should be held criminally responsible and affect the judge’s deliberations on a verdict or, in the event of a conviction, the severity of the sentence, according to legal analysts.

The evaluation came after a psychiatrist, Dr. Merryll Vorster, testified for the defense that Pistorius, who has said he feels vulnerable because of his disability and long-held worry about crime, had an anxiety disorder that could have contributed to the killing in the early hours of Feb. 14, 2013. He testified that he opened fire after mistakenly thinking there was a dangerous intruder in the toilet.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel has alleged that Pistorius, 27, killed the 29-year-old model after an argument, and has portrayed the Olympic athlete as a hothead with a love of guns and an inflated sense of entitlement. But he requested an independent inquiry into Pistorius’ state of mind, based on concern the defense would argue Pistorius was not guilty because of mental illness.

Pistorius’ defense team could get a boost if the hospital evaluation roughly aligns with the conclusions of Vorster, the defense witness, said a legal expert observing the trial. Kelly Phelps, a senior lecturer in the public law department at the University of Cape Town, said a diagnosis that Pistorius has an anxiety disorder could add weight to his account and compel the judge to consider the question: “Is it more likely that he is telling the truth about what occurred on that night?”

Even if the judge rules that Pistorius is guilty despite any disorder that he is suffering, Phelps said, the diagnosis could be a mitigating factor when he is sentenced.

“That is the area of law that is often referred t o a s d i m i nOscar ished responsiPistorius bility,” she said.

Other possible conclusions in the psychiatric evaluation are that Pistorius is not suffering from any anxiety disorder, which could undermine his defense. Alternatively, it might be found that he was incapable of distinguishing between right and wrong or acting in accordance with that understanding, which could lead to a verdict of not guilty because of mental illness and referral to state psychiatric care.

Pistorius faces 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder, and could also face years in prison if convicted of murder without premeditation or negligent killing. He is free on bail.

Once Judge Masipa receives the conclusions from the mental health experts, the defense will be in a position to call its few remaining witnesses, prior to closing arguments and Masipa’s deliberation on a verdict.

Ukraine president talks to Putin, Merkel, Hollande

By DAVID McHUGH The Associated Press KIEV, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko tried to keep his peace plan to settle the conflict with pro-Russian separatists on track in a four-way phone call Sunday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leaders of France and Germany.

The two-hour conversation came ahead of a Monday deadline that European Union leaders set for Russia and the separatists to take steps to ease the violence, warning that otherwise they were ready “at any time” to impose further punitive measures.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande encouraged the Ukrainian and Russian presidents to work on meeting the EU conditions, Hollande’s office said in a statement. The EU’s demands included the return of three border checkpoints to Ukrainian control, verification of the cease-fire by monitors from the Organization

The call was the latest in a series of discussions the four leaders have held in recent weeks in an effort to stop the

fighting that has killed more than 400 people since April. A cease-fire in place since June 20 has been shaky, with each

side accusing the other of numerous violations.

A statement issued by Poroshenko’s office said he underlined Ukraine’s willingness to maintain the cease-fire at least until Monday evening, but expressed concern about the situation, noting what he said were multiple violations of the truce by separatist fighters. He called on Putin to strengthen border controls from the Russian side to stop what Ukraine says is the flow of weapons, fighters and mercenaries.

The sides agreed that more talks among representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the separatists would convene “very soon,” Poroshenko’s office said.

A Kremlin statement said the four leaders discussed having OSCE monitors stationed at the border crossing points.

They also discussed issues resulting from Ukraine’s signing of a broad trade deal with the EU on Friday despite Russia’s objections. Russian officials have said Ukraine’s tariff-free trade arrangement with Russia may be withdrawn, but no trade sanctions have yet been announced.

The need to extinguish a problem A devastating fire in Hoopeston gave rise to legislation aimed at preventing a similar problem elsewhere.

It often takes a disaster to focus public attention on a problem that needs to be addressed. The June 19, 2013, fire at a 400,000-square-foot Hoopeston tire-recycling facility is one recent example.

The fire, which sent thick black smoke billowing into the air and forced the evacuation of nearby residents, took more than 100 firefighters from more than 20 area fire departments a month to extinguish.

That it could have been worse does not minimize in any way the disastrous nature of what occurred.

Gov. Pat Quinn has signed

what he hopes will be corrective legislation to prevent similar events. The new law, which was co-sponsored by state Sen. Michael Frerichs, D-Champaign, puts safety standards in place that should discourage what happened at the Hoopeston facility, where many thousands of old tires were stored waiting to be recycled.

The legislation requires facilities with either more than 10,000 passenger tires or that process 500 tons of used tires per year to acquire a solid-waste permit to operate.

Tire recyclers will be required to maintain records, allow inspections and meet financial-assurance requirements.

Of course, this fire was as

much a disaster for Rodney Rogers, the operator of the recycling business, as it was for the public. Rather than stockpile used tires, as he did in the past, Rogers told The News-Gazette that he now brings in about 10,000 tires a day, processes them and ships them out. That change in business practice alone will prevent the kind of buildup that created the safety problem that led to the fire.

Authorities said the fire started when sparks from machinery ignited tire dust.

Much has changed since the fire. Rogers has moved his recycling business to Tilton, where he’s using part of the

Hagan steps up for his crew, defends title

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Often, it’s the crew and the crew chief that has to encourage a driver who isn’t winning.

With Matt Hagan’s Funny Car team, it’s been the other way around.

Since triumphing at Ponoma, California, in the final race of the 2013 season, Hagan has had to pat the backs of Dickie Venables and the 10-man crew that works on his year-old Don Schumacher Racing Dodge Charger.

“My pom poms have been out all year long,” Hagan said late on Sunday afternoon.

It was a few minutes after the crowd of about 17,500 at Route 66 Raceway cheered him after he captured the Funny Car title in the 17th NHRA Route 66 Nationals, defending the title he won last year.

Hagan knocked off fellow Schumacher driver Tommy Johnson Jr. in the final, getting off the starting line more briskly than top qualifier Johnson, and staying ahead of him by barreling down the 1,000-foot track in 4.098 seconds.

His first victory of 2014 came in the 12th race of the season, and on one of the longest days of the year.

“You don’t want this day to end,” Hagan said. “We’ve got 10 guys working together for one common goal. It’s been a very humbling year for us. We kinda fell off after Ponoma, but the guys have been keeping after it.”

Technical problems had plagued the team, at least in comparison to last year.

Those gremlins seem to have been eliminated.

Johnson advanced to the final despite his engine losing a cylinder about 100 feet into his semifinal run against Courtney Force. She smoked the tires and Johnson passed her halfway down the track.

Hagan’s victory over Ron Capps in his semifinal was textbook, and narrow (0.0156 seconds), but it stuck. It was another hint that his 4.095-second qualifying time, which

Hagan moved from 10th to eighth in the standings with the victory, while Johnson climbed from fifth to second place, 248 points behind leader Robert Hight, who was knocked off by Capps in the

second round.

With Hagan and Johnson both in the final, Schumacher, the north suburban owner of the Brownsburg, Indiana-based team, couldn’t lose.

“If you’re not running for a championship, Don’s not happy,” Hagan said.

And on Sunday, the semifinal and final were less than an hour apart to satisfy the

demands of ESPN, which was televising live rather than the usual recorded presentation.

The 65-minute turnaround was shortened to about 55 minutes.

“I can’t say enough about the crew guys with the short turnaround on live TV,” Venables said. “We’d just been trying to work out some new parts and pieces. It takes time.”

Like every other team, Hagan struggled with the heat and humidity that made it a struggle for several teams to dial their engines and clutches properly to create traction and avoid wheel spin with 10,000-rpm engines.

“For the crew chief, it’s tough, but we seemed to have a car that would go down this race track,” Hagan said.

The $50,000 first prize and the trophy he was holding reiterated that.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Earlier in the season, Antron Brown beat Brittany Force in the finals at Phoenix to capture one of his three previous wins in the NHRA’s Top Fuel class this season.

On Sunday, the two squared off again with a title at stake in the finals of the 17th O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Force was trying to join her father, John, and sister, Courtney, as NHRA winners but Brown, who had won 28 titles in Top Fuel and 40 total during his NHRA career, had other ideas.

Although mechanical problems prevented Force from warming up heading into the finals, Brown and his crew also had to scramble to get his Matco Tools car ready during the quick turnaround following the semifinals that came about because of ESPN’s live coverage.

Brown, the 2012 Top Fuel world champion, won the title with a pass of 3.814 seconds at 317.34. He entered the weekend in second place in points and had the third-best qualifying time.

“This was amazing,” said Brown, who has won twice in Top Fuel and twice in Pro Stock Motorcycle at Route 66 Raceway. “We always love coming here because of the way that the weather can swing. We had some great runs in all of the qualifying rounds. We knew what we were capable of and coming out here on race day, we ran a good first round, but then the track got tricky on us.

“When you get to the final and you know that you’re racing against someone like Brittany Force, you know that you have to go in with your A-plus game. Every time that I race against somebody it just brings out the best in them. It felt really good to stay poised this weekend and we had some things go our way and it felt great too run that great in the final round.

Since getting into an accident in Atlanta in mid-May, Brown has had to go with a new car and feels he and his team are starting to get things going again.

“After we left Atlanta we were kind of bummed a little bit,” Brown said. “We had a great car and it was going. It was working well and that was the car that we wanted to run for the championship.

But the Good Lord had a different idea and said that He wanted to give us a better one.

“So, the boys in the shop went to work and gave us the new car that we’re running now. We got a win with it in our third race out and that’s just testament to how spot on our boys in the shop and our race team are to put it togeth-

er and make it run like it has been running.”

Force, who was ninth in points and had the fourthbest qualifier, advanced to her second finals after a win by inches over J.R. Todd in the last semifinal (3.9063.889). Brown won his 500th round of his career with a triumph over Clay Millican in the semifinals.

Points leader and top-qualifier Doug Kalitta lost to Todd in the quarterfinals. As a result, the top qualifier has failed to win a Top Fuel event this season.

Defending champion and number-two qualifier Tony Schumacher fell in the first round to Millican. A week ago at New England, Schumacher defeated Kalitta to claim the title.

Just one week after the initial wife-husband showdown in a finals came on the bikes, Hector Arana and Hector Arana Jr. met in the first father-son finals in that same class.

Although the elder Arana grabbed the early advantage in pursuit of his first title since 2009, his son responded to capture his initial win since grabbing top honors at Sonoma, California last year.

Thanks to a pass of 6.925 at 193.93, the younger Arana edged his father and crew chief to earn his first win at Route 66 Raceway in a matchup of Lucas Oil Buell motorcycles.

While the older Arana wanted to win and was deter-

mined to make his son earn the victory, he wasn’t too disappointed about how things turned out for his family.

“This means that I’ll have to go home and work harder,” Arana joked. “It was something that I was looking forward to for a long time and to my surprise, I wasn’t nervous. I was relaxed and calm because I already felt like a winner. “ Arana earned his 19th career finals showing after a semifinal win over Angie Smith, while his son advanced to his 14th finals after beating Shawn Gann in the semifinals.

Arana Jr. had the second-best qualifying time and was third in points while his father came in ninth in points and posted the fifth-best qualifying mark.

Eddie Krawiec, who had posted the best times in each qualifying round, got red-lighted against Angie Smith in the quarterfinals.

JOLIET – Vincent Nobile had been there before, eight times. In the winner’s circle, trophy in hand, accepting plaudits and backslaps.

But he hadn’t won since the NHRA roared through Seattle last year, and as far as he was concerned, that was too long.

“This was a long time coming,” Nobile said after knocking off Ken Black Racing teammate Jason Line in Sunday’s Pro Stock final of the 17th NHRA Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

“You kind of forget what it feels like.”

It feels good. Exhaustingly good on a balmy day, but good.

What Nobile hadn’t forgotten was how he’d botched an attempt at victory in last week’s New England Nationals. He short-shifted in the final, then told everyone about it. Nobody would have known

“In the pits, I told him, ‘I’m still gonna go out and cut your eyes out,’” Nobile said.

His near-perfect reaction time of four-thousandths of a second earned him the victory on a hole shot, for while Line was faster from start to finish, Nobile got there first because he was faster to react to the starting light.

Connolly had taken out top qualifier Allen Johnson in the quarterfinals. Tucker beat points leader Erica Enders-Stevens on a hole shot in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinal round for the first time.

But Nobile, who made it to the semis when Jeg Coughlin Jr. jumped the start and was disqualified, beat Tucker in the penultimate round to end the Cinderella march by the No. 10 qualifier.

Coughlin, second in the standings, was sanguine about his DQ. “The racing out here is

Slammers swept by Gateway

By MIKE FITZGERALD Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Jeff Isom was looking for something to change the Slammers’ fortunes as Joliet entered Sunday having lost six of its past seven games.

The Slammers’ manager started Santo Manzanillo, a hard-throwing reliever, instead of planned starter Kody McFarland. The problem was Manzanillo gave up five runs in two and a third innings, and the Gateway Grizzlies completed the weekend sweep of Joliet with a 6-1 win in a Frontier League game at Silver Cross Field.

“We’re at the beginning stages of changing some things up right now,” Matt Kennedy, Joliet’s hitting coach said.

Isom had been tossed from the game in the top of the seventh inning arguing a call at second base.

“We wanted to change things up and mix it up a little bit,” he said. “It’s something Jeff has done in the past. We were still able to give Kody [McFarland] enough prep time to get ready. He treated it like a start. Unfortunately, [Manzianillo] got behind in a couple of counts, and they took advan-

tage of that.”

Manzanillo threw 63 pitches before reliever Harry Marino entered the game. He pitched the rest of the third inning before giving way to reliever Sam Moore. McFarland entered the game in the top of the fifth inning. He pitched five scoreless innings, working his way out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the eighth inning.

“Coming into the game in the fifth inning changed my mindset,” McFarland said. “I was able to come in and throw hard and in the zone. Those guys were aggressive hitters, so it worked out for me. They wanted to try something different because we’ve been struggling a little bit. They started one of our closers who throws in the upper 90s. They wanted to give us a chance to jump on them in the first inning.”

Gateway (28-13), which banged out 46 hits in the series, took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off of Manzanillo. Xaiver Macklin walked and stole second base.

One batter later, Tommy Richards doubled to right to score Macklin.

Gateway’s Nikko Vasquez continued his weekend rampage against his former team by hitting a solo homer, his

fourth of the series and sixth of the season, to left field to lead off the third inning. Richard Seigel, who was 6 for 6 with four RBIs Saturday, followed with a home run, his third of the series, to right. After Manzanillo retired Michael Wing on a flyout, he hit Macklin with a pitch.

The Grizzlies’ Ben Waldrip doubled to right off Marino to score Macklin. Marino’s wild pitch advanced Waldrip to third. He scored on Richards’ sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.

Gateway added another run in the top of the fourth inning.

The Slammers (15-23) picked one run up in the bottom of the third. Granger doubled to right, moved to third on Adam Lewis’s groundout to second and scored on Max Casper’s groundout to shortstop.

“It’s mentally tough to come out here and have 15 runs put up on you a game. It’s hard to play defense behind that. It’s hard at the plate. You start losing focus a little bit, but we’ve got a great group. We have a good team. We all like each other. It’s not anything in the clubhouse. We have a tough group of guys. We’ll get it together,” Joliet third baseman Grant DeBruin said.

White Sox get 1st shutout of season

By IAN HARRISON The Associated Press TORONTO – Jose Quintana and two relievers gave the White Sox something they hadn’t had all year: a shutout.

Quintana won back-toback starts for the first time this season, Moises Sierra homered and the White Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-0, on Sunday for their third straight win.

Jose Abreu extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI single as the Sox posted their first shutout of the season in their 83rd game and won three straight for the first time since May 26-28

against Cleveland.

“It starts off with Q,” manager Robin Ventura said.

“He threw great. He was attacking the zone. If he can get ahead and stay there, and mix speeds like he did today, he’s tough.”

Quintana (5-7) allowed three hits in seven innings, improving to 4-1 with a 1.80 ERA in six starts against the Blue Jays. He walked two and struck out seven.

“Today the big pitch was the ability to throw effective off speed pitches early to get ahead,” catcher Tyler Flowers said. “His slider-slurve thing, he had a really good feel for that.”

Eric Surkamp worked the eighth and Jake Petricka finished.

“A nice win all the way around,” Ventura said as his team ended a season-long 11game road trip on a high after losing seven of the first eight.

Facing his former team for the second time, Blue Jays left-hander Mark Buehrle (105) lost for the fourth time in five starts, allowing two runs and six hits in eight innings.

He walked two and struck out five.

“You know what he has, it just seems like it’s tough to line him up like you want to,” friend and former teammate Paul Konerko said of Buehrle.

he said. “Those type of little things that you don’t get to work on every day.”

Greene said he has an ideal goal weight to reach for the season, though he wouldn’t disclose it. He’s not going to be in the Bourbonnais conversation at linebacker that will involve McClellin, Bostic and D.J. Williams, but a quicker, more lean Greene helps the defense.

“You’ve got a young Khaseem that is running quicker, faster than he ever has before at practice,” linebackers coach Reggie Herring said. “He’s lost some weight and he’s starting to look like the guy that they drafted two years ago as far as movement skills. He’s having success.”

Greene agreed with his position coach that he is getting back to the physique he showed off at Rutgers, where he was a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

As a rookie, however, times were tough for Greene, whose Pro Football Focus grade was -9.6. He sounds like a player with a chip on his shoulder heading into training camp “This offseason has been really good for me because I’m comfortable now with

the scheme, what’s going on with the defense and also with myself, knowing that I belong here,” he said. “It’s pretty much now or never. It’s time to show everyone else I belong here and silence any doubt, or anything that goes on that I don’t know about or that I’m pretty sure I can imagine is going on, because it’s always going to happen.

“Just being able to run around my teammates and show those guys I can be accountable to them as well, it’s been pretty fun.”

Assuming Greene makes the 53-man roster, Week One against the Bills will have special meaning for him. Greene changed his number to 52 to honor his former Rutgers teammate, Eric LeGrand, who was paralyzed on the field in October 2010 and has been an inspiration to many in his recovery.

“I can’t really put it into words. The fact that I’m blessed enough to be in this position and I get to honor one of my closest friends in such a way is an honor itself,” Greene said. “I can’t even tell you how it’s going to be that first game, but it’s going to be special.”

Shea McClellin wins the award for “body transformation” of the 2014 Bears offseason, but there’s another linebacker with a new number who looked a bit different at OTAs and minicamp: Khaseem Greene.

The second-year ‘Will’ linebacker “came into camp a bit heavy” last summer, Phil Emery said during the season.

Greene, who measured in at 241 pounds at the Combine, started four games last season in Lance Briggs’ absence. He had 28 tackles, and an interception against Minnesota, but, like fellow rookie Jon Bostic and the rest of the defense, struggled.

Looking to make that “second year leap,” Greene slimmed down in the offseason, working out in Cincinnati with trainer Clif Marshall and NFL players Luke Kuechly, Rey Maualuga and Mohamed Sanu. He also was in Florida with Brandon Marshall and other Bears teammates.

“I think the biggest thing for me was just my nutrition, watching what I put into my body and getting to a weight where I really want to be at and feel real comfortable at, which allowed me to fly around and move a little differently than I did last year,” Greene said as minicamp wrapped up at Halas Hall last week.

Greene has worked as the second-team weak-side linebacker behind Lance Briggs.

“I like to play behind Lance,” he said, “He’s taught me a lot, showed me some things.”

Greene will also work to solidify his roster spot by participating on special teams.

In addition to getting his nutrition in check, Greene had an on-field trait he focused on during the offseason to improve at linebacker and on the coverage teams.

New Lenox Eagle Scout builds outdoor pavilion for Will County Humane Society

That’s all that Max Benedict, 17, of New Lenox could say when he took a break from work on the 20by-20 foot pavilion he and 40 other volunteers were constructing for the Will County Humane Society as part of his Eagle Scout project.

“I’ve been working a year and half on this and it just feels so good,” Max said. “The dogs will be able to come out here, have fun and interact with people. Hopefully, there will be more adoptions.”

Benedict, other Boy Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 49 and friends and family met at 8 a.m. on a sunny and mild Saturday in June to assemble the structure, which they ordered as a kit from a company that supplies pavilions for dog parks.

“It came on a semitruck and weighed 4,000 pounds,” said Max’s mother, Liz Benedict. “We needed a forklift to unload it.”

A dog lover, Max Benedict had two criteria for his Eagle Scout project: it had to involve animals and it had to be something permanent, something that would bless people over time. So, Benedict called Dave Horkey, vice president at the Will County Humane Society, who suggested the pavilion.

“We had a donor that wanted us to put the money toward something other than paying bills,” Horkey said. “[The pavilion] had been a dream of ours for some time.”

The pavilion will provide a solid surface for puppies – especially those that have not yet completed their series of vaccinations – to safely go outside, Horkey said.

It will also mean potentially netting more money from fundraisers since the shelter will no longer have to rent a tent, Horkey said. Without having the expense of the tent, the shelter can plan even more fundraisers, he added.

“We’re already planning to expand our fundraising team,” Horkey said.

Horkey was impressed with the amount of work Max undertook to make this project happen. Construction permits needed to be obtained.

The Will County Health Department had to clear the site, Horkey said.

Max said received donations for cement (16 yards from Ozinga Concrete in Mokena), stone (seven yards from Delaney Contracting

in Crest Hill) and paints and brushes (New Lenox Ace Hardware).

He then raised $3,700 through collecting money at the VFW Post 9545 in New Lenox – where Troop 49 meets – Tucker’s Doggie Delights in New Lenox and from a mass mailing to 400 New Lenox area businesses.

Of the donation money, $3,350 went to pay Delaney Contracting for the framing and the finishing of the concrete. The rest was used to purchase tools, Liz said.

Benedict’s sister Emily, 15, painted the shelter’s benches in bright colors and stenciled them with dog paws. Pat Hartnell, a career financial representative at Country Financial in New Lenox, assisted Max with the mass mailing and paid for the postage.

Hartnell had met Benedict at the VFW when Benedict was soliciting for donations.

As a dog owner, Benedict’s intentions impressed Hartnell.

He talked to bar patrons and asked them for donations on Benedict’s behalf.

The following week, Benedict and his family met Hartnell at the Country Financial Office. Hartnell said two of his assistants, Sandy DeLair and Sylvia Anzelmo, helped with the envelope stuffing.

They are planning an extended lunch to see the completed pavilion, he said.

Hartnell said if the world had more Benedict’s, it would be in good shape.

“He had the ability to reach out to people, despite rejection. Not a lot of kids could do that,” Hartnell said.

“You couldn’t meet Max and

not be impressed. He was sincere in his heart.”

Larry Ringbauer, shelter manager, called the pavilion a godsend. Ringbauer said that each improvement and addition to the shelter makes it possible to get more dogs adopted and then take in even more dogs.

However, Ringbauer is not surprised that it took a group of Boy Scouts to make it happen. Boy Scouts have historically done great things for the Will County Humane Society, he said, from donating food to building the outdoor dog pens and dog runs. He can’t wait to use the pavilion.

“It’s great that they did this for us,” Ringbauer said.

North’s three-diamond rebid promises some points, usually five or more.

Declarer has 11 top tricks: six spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. The first thought is probably to hope that West has the diamond queen.

Why? What is the advantage?

Dear Reader: The answer to your question lies in the type of damage osteoarthritis inflicts. Osteoarthritis results from the deterioration of cartilage, the tough, flexible tissue that covers the ends of your bones at every joint in your body. The cartilage is a cushion that keeps one bone from grinding against another bone.

As cartilage degenerates, patches of bone become exposed. Those patches of bone start to rub against each other and become irritated.

They try to repair themselves, but the repairs are uneven, bumpy, jagged. This further irritates the surrounding soft tissues and causes inflammation.

A key part of arthritis treatment is drug therapy to alleviate pain and inflammation. The first step is usually over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol). Doctors often recommend it first because it relieves mild pain and is easy on the stomach.

But nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often more effective. That’s because they not only relieve pain, but also reduce inflammation. NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin

NSAIDs work by inhibiting the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes. COX-1 protects the stomach lining from stomach acids and harsh digestive enzymes. COX-2 causes pain and inflammation. NSAIDs relieve pain and inflammation by inhibiting COX-2. But by inhibiting COX-1, they often cause stomach problems, including bleeding and ulcers.

COX-2 inhibitors are a newer type of NSAID. These drugs inhibit only the COX-2 enzyme involved in pain and inflammation; they spare the protective COX-1 enzyme. As a result, they relieve pain as well as the strongest NSAIDs, with less stomach irritation.

However, COX-2 inhibitors increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Only one COX-2 inhibitor, celecoxib (Celebrex), remains on the market.

If you choose a traditional NSAID, ask your doctor about taking it with a stomach-protecting drug. Examples include histamine blockers and proton-pump inhibitors. (Some medicines

already combine an NSAID with a stomach-protecting medication.)

Also, don’t use an NSAID every day except under the supervision of your doctor. It appears most of the NSAID drugs, such as the one COX-2 inhibitor that remains on the market, very slightly increase the risk of heart attack and stroke when taken regularly.

Finally, don’t rely solely on medication. Try other pain-relief strategies such as physical therapy or massage. Strong muscles around a joint can reduce the force with which bone meets bone. Physical therapy increases muscle strength.

Why massage, since the joint is deep inside the body, well away from the fingers of the person performing massage? Because arthritis in a joint often causes spasm of the muscles around that joint. This is particularly true of arthritis of the hip and knee. Massage can relieve the muscular pain.

I learned this when my right hip developed severe arthritis. While the hip hurt, the pain in many of the muscles of my right leg was worse than the hip pain. Massage helped greatly.

anything that is purchased with it. The statements are addressed to you, and you have a right to see them. That your fiancée is refusing to show them to you is a sure sign she has something to hide.

That’s why you must take the card away from her to ensure she isn’t putting you into a financial hole you won’t be able to dig yourself out of. And because the lady can’t seem to control her spending, I’m urging you to think long and hard before marrying her, because after you do, you will be responsible for her debts.
