By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet City Council on Tuesday agreed to give the Rialto Square Theatre a $300,000 advance but cautioned not to come back for more money this year.

The city contributes $600,000 to the Rialto each year but makes the payments quarterly.

Rialto officials wanted an advance on the third and fourth quarter payments because of cash-flow problems that have led to the theater even having trouble paying its gas bill.

“We’re going to give you the $300,000 today,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said. “The caveat is that we don’t want you coming back and asking for any more money this calendar year.”

Rialto Executive Director Randy Green faced the council and answered questions about shows at the theater, its sources of revenue and even whether the theater would shut down.

“Are we in jeopardy of the Rialto closing?” Councilman Jim McFarland said.

Green said he could give no guarantee, but the Rialto was planning to be able to celebrate its 100th anniversary. That would come in 2026.

The two African-American council members, Bettye Gavin and Terry Morris, said they have heard from people questioning the diversity of performers brought to the Rialto. Gavin said after the meeting, the question was raised because of complaints that the Rialto did not stage acts that would appeal to African-American and Latino audiences.

“In your efforts to broaden your demographics and your programming, are there ways for the residents to weigh in?”

Gavin asked.

Green said people could contact the Rialto through its website or call. He also said the theater does surveys to gauge the market.

Cadence and Ikea

Cadence Premier Logistics and Ikea got the final approvals they needed to build distribution centers and trucking operations in the Laraway Crossings Business Park.

Both projects have been controversial because of the amount of truck traffic already going onto Route 53, which runs alongside the business park.

City Council members also had raised questions, particularly about a truck service facility that is part of the Cadence plan.

But special use permits and plats were approved unanimously and without discussion on Tuesday.

The Cadence project also involves the relocation of its corporate office, distribution facility and assembly plant from Alsip.

Ikea plans to build twin 1.4-million square foot distribution operations. Both will include storage towers that are 115 feet high.

JOLIET – The Joliet Fire Department will be conducting “Live Fire” training evolutions at the corner of Bronk Road and Theodore Street on June 9, 10 and 11.

The training will be taking place from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. those days, according to a news release from the city.

“I want to be certain that citizens are aware of this live training for traffic reasons and to dispel any fears that might arise due to smoke and flames at Bronk and Theodore,” Battalion Chief Brian Plyer said in the news release.

Batinick offers Summer Reading Club for kids

PLAINFIELD – State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, has announced the launch of his Summer Reading Club for students entering kindergarten through fifth grades.

The program aims to encourage reading among local youth and promote the lifelong benefits of literacy, according to a news release from Batinick.

Students are challenged to read eight books during summer break, and books of 150 pages or

more count as two. A parent or guardian must certify the reading was accomplished and return the signed form on the brochure to Batinick’s office by Aug. 17.

Students who successfully complete the reading challenge will be invited with family members to a free recognition party in early autumn, where Batinick will present summer readers with an official certificate from the state, according to the news release.

Cpl. Sara Medina killed during humanitarian efforts in Nepal

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Tears welled in Oswego resident Marlene Frigo’s eyes as the funeral procession for U.S. Marine Cpl. Sara Medina passed under a two-story American flag and entered Overman-Jones Funeral Home.

Medina wasn’t her daughter, but she has a son in the Marines. She couldn’t help but feel a mother’s pain for a lost child.

Frigo was one of hundreds of people Tuesday who lined Route 59 in downtown Plainfield on to honor Medina, Sara Medina who died after a helicopter she was in crashed May 12 during humanitarian efforts in Nepal after April 25’s devastating earthquake and aftershocks.

“It’s nice to see strangers line up to honor a soldier, no matter what branch she is from,” Frigo said. “It’s personal for me. I came here to honor our soldiers.”

Procession

Several police vehicles fronted the procession, led by a hearse holding Medina. Family members followed in several vehicles, and then came the American Patriot Riders, a group of motorcyclists who support members of the military.

Medina’s procession started at O’Hare International Airport about 2 p.m. It headed to Aurora, where her family lives, then traveled down Route 59 to the Plainfield funeral home, arriving about 3 p.m.

Family, Marines, law enforcement officials and others lined the sidewalks of the funeral home drive. The hearse’s back door opened, and several silent moments later, two Marines picked up Medina’s flag-

A private family gathering was then held in the funeral home, closed to the public.

The visitation is from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with the funeral at 7 p.m.

“We’re just here to support the family,” said Bob Richards, who helped organize the public gathering.

Supporting the fallen

To prepare for the procession, Plainfield firefighters used ladder trucks to hoist and hold a 90-foot flag so it hung over Route 59 just north of the funeral home.

As firefighters and police shut down local streets and parts of Route 59 before the procession, hundreds of people gathered American flags

and formed a flag line.

A common practice in organized honorary ceremonies for funeral processions for fallen military members,

the flag line was organized

by Richards, a member of the American Legion Riders, and Paul Bicking from “Grillin’ For Freedom,” another organization that honors active military and veterans.

Small flags were placed along the Route 59 sidewalks, and adults and children lined Route 59 with large flags in hand.

“We’re showing our support for [Medina] and all of our troops,” said Elwood resident Nick George, who came with Plainfield resident Catherine Chimmy and her daughter.

Rauner nixes Illiana Expressway project

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner announced plans Tuesday to nix the controversial Illiana Expressway project and close state facilities as he continued to grapple with Illinois’ fiscal crisis.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will remove the $1.5 billion tollway project from its current multi-year plan, according to a statement from the governor’s office.

Rauner also announced plans to possibly close two juvenile detention facilities, close five state museums and ground state aircraft.

“In light of the state’s current fiscal crisis and a lack of sufficient capital resources,

the Illiana Expressway will not move forward at this time,” the statement read.

“It is the determination of IDOT that the project costs exceed currently available resources. [IDOT] will begin the process of suspending all existing project contracts and procurements,” the statement continued.

The proposed tollway would run through southern Will County and connect Interstate 55 with Interstate 65 in Indiana.

Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said Tuesday he’s disappointed in Rauner’s decision.

He said there is a great need for an east-west route for truckers to ease congestion along Interstate 80, Interstate 55 and local roads.

He added that he previously hoped Rauner, with a business background, would have shown interest in the tollway’s funding through a private-public partnership.

The Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club, a major opponent, released a statement Tuesday afternoon in response to Raun-

er’s decision to suspend the project indefinitely.

“We’re pleased that IDOT has heard the concerns of farmers, local officials and business owners. This project would not only waste taxpayer money, but would disrupt their way of life,” the statement read. “We pledge to work with local citizens and leaders to plan for transportation solutions for Will County and for creating jobs while making the best use of public resources.”

Rauner suspended the project earlier this year with the intent to make a final decision about its inclusion in IDOT’s multi-year plan at a later date.

Rauner also announced Tuesday plans to curtail spending on child care and senior services if there’s no agreement on

a state budget by July 1.

His administration will decide on the possible closure of up to two juvenile detention facilities, along with shuttering a downstate minimum-security prison work camp, closing down five state museums and grounding state aircraft.

Laying blame on Democrats, he described the process as defense against the “Madigan-Cullerton Budget,” a reference to the legislative leaders who have OK’d a spending plan for the coming fiscal year, but acknowledged they want a tax increase to bridge a revenue gap of at least $3 billion.

Rauner says it’s closer to $4 billion.

Hawk Auto Group becomes biggest car dealer in town

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hawk Auto Group has become the biggest car dealership in Joliet.

The Hawk acquisition of four Bill Jacobs new car franchises was completed Friday, giving the auto group five car brands and three locations, all on Jefferson Street.

The acquisition marks the end of an era, with the Bill Jacobs name disappearing from the Joliet landscape after more than a half-century of new car dealerships. And it marks the beginning of a new one.

Hawk Auto Group arrived in Joliet in December with the acquisition of the former D’Arcy Volkswagen dealership on Jefferson Street. It also now has Chevrolet, Cadillac, Mazda and Subaru following the Bill Jacobs deal.

John Crane, president and part owner of Hawk, said the company’s move into Joliet was “by design. This is a great market. Joliet is a big small town in some ways. In another way, it’s a big city

and the center of Will County.”

The sale of Bill Jacobs dealerships included the Kia brand going to Scott Falcone, owner of New World Hyundai in Matteson. The Joliet dealership now is New World Kia. Hawk has moved Subaru away from the Jefferson Street location it formerly shared with Kia under Bill Jacobs ownership. Subaru now is located at 2200 W. Jefferson St., where a former auto parts store was remodeled for the showroom.

Crane said the company plans to build new facilities for Subaru and Mazda.

Mazda will eventually move to 2200 W. Jefferson St., which Hawk plans to expand with the acquisition of neighboring property to the west.

Hawk not only is making a big investment in Joliet, but in Jefferson Street, the traditional car row that Bill Jacobs pioneered when he moved the Chevrolet dealership to the current location from downtown.

Crane said Subaru en-

couraged him to move that dealership to Route 59. But he preferred staying on Jefferson Street because of its proximity to Interstate 80 and accessibility to customers farther east.

“The traffic count is very stable on Jefferson Street,” he said.

Jefferson Street in Joliet is not the car row it once was, with the splintering of dealerships to other locations. But even when Tirapelli Ford and Tyson Motors moved west to Shorewood, they stayed on Jefferson Street.

“Jefferson Street keeps rebuilding itself,” said James Haller, community and economic development director for the city of Joliet. “It keeps adapting to market conditions.”

Haller said the car dealerships provide stability to Jefferson Street.

While Terry D’Arcy sold the Volkswagen dealership, he still has a Hyundai dealership on Jefferson Street.

D’Arcy’s Buick-GMC dealership is on Essington Road.

Mayor renews search for an alderman

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick will renew a search for an alderman to fill the vacant City Council seat left by the May 4 resignation of former Second Ward Alderman Ken Sereno.

The City Council voted Monday against the mayor’s first appointment, former Republican Alderman Julian Houston, who lost his re-election bid to Doug Hayse. Aldermen Bill Martin, Jeff Wachowski and Duane Wolfe voted “Yes,” while Hayse, Don Hansen, Randy Larson and Don Matteson voted “No.” “I will consider all the possibilities to fill the seat for the

Second Ward a l d e r m a n seat, and I will come back to the board next month for a vote,” Kopczick Julian said Tuesday.

The Grundy Houston County Republican Central Committee submitted David Valdivia as the party’s nominee to fill the remaining term of Sereno, a Republican.

Kopczick said at the council meeting he wanted to honor Sereno’s request, which was for Houston to take his spot.

Michael Mattingly, chairman of the Republican Central Committee, said Tuesday he hopes the mayor will now

choose Valdivia.

“I’m pleased that the Republican Party on the council supported the ReDavid publican Party Valdivia endorsement,” Mattingly said.

Mattingly said he was disappointed the mayor varied from his past practice of seeking input from other aldermen, something Hayse brought up during the meeting.

“I don’t know about everybody else,” Hayse said about not being contacted about the appointment, “but I get off work about 2 p.m. I’m very available.”

According to Illinois Mu-

nicipal Code 65 ILCS 5/3.1-1050, the mayor has 60 days to appoint someone to the vacant seat, at which time the council has 30 days to vote on the appointment. If the appointment is voted down, the mayor has 30 days from the vote to appoint another alderman for vote by the council.

If the mayor’s next appointment also is voted down, he can make an appointment of either of the two appointees he put before the council, and that person will serve as alderman until the next election for the seat.

Kopczick said if the council votes down his appointment in July, the meeting will move forward without the seat filled, just as it did Monday, and he

would then make his appointment at a future meeting.

Valdivia said Tuesday he is disappointed he wasn’t appointed, but he understands the mayor was respecting Sereno’s wishes.

“I thought it was honorable for the mayor to take the suggestion of Ken Sereno. Ken was an alderman for as long as I’ve been alive,” Valdivia said. “I believe both Julian Houston and I would be good candidates.”

Mattingly said Houston was interviewed by the Republican caucus, but Valdivia received the party’s nomination. Messages left Tuesday for Houston were not immediately returned and he did not comment at Monday’s meeting.

Proposal for medical marijuana hears much opposition

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Monday’s Morris City Council meeting lasted nearly four hours – so long that Mayor Richard Kopczick paused it to run for a third recording tape.

The council chambers were full, and 18 people signed up to speak. The majority of the people were against the prospective location of a medical marijuana dispensary at 2400 W. Route 6, the former Rockwell Inn. Greenhouse Group LLC applied for a conditional use permit to open a dispensary in the former restaurant. The council voted 4-3 to postpone a decision until the council had its eighth alderman in place. An attempt at the start of the meeting to fill that position failed.

Aldermen Bill Martin, Duane Wolfe, Jeff Wachowski and Doug Hayse voted to table, while Don Hansen, Randy Larson and Don Matteson voted against.

Speakers opposed to the location represented Rockwell Estates, Heatherfield and Nettle Creek subdivisions, and Ambassadors for Christ Church.

Public comment was made

after the council heard a presentation from Greenhouse Group partners Matt Darin and Mitch Khan, who said the facility would feel like a wellness center or spa, and medical marijuana would be in a safe.

The building could feature yoga, acupuncture, meditation classes, a cancer support group and other things, Darin said, adding that it’s a destination for people with medical conditions – not a business with neon signs to attract customers.

Darin said the location will have more than 30 security cameras linked to the Illinois State Police, with 24-7 surveillance on file for 90 days.

Only about 2,500 people so far have been approved in the state to receive medical marijuana, state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, told the council.

Public comments get heated

Ted Ergo of Nettle Creek said he’s concerned customers would leave the location, park in one of the subdivisions and roll a joint.

Bob Spiers, who lives on Taller Road, said he’d like to see more research done, and he hopes employees would have four-year degrees – not just learning from a training class.

Two of the 18 people spoke in support of medical marijuana’s benefits.

JoAnne Gretencord, who battled cancer three times, said she wished she could have used medical marijuana. She said her doctor recommended using marijuana, but she feared she’d go to jail. Gretencord said she used it once, and felt immediate relief.

The Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act prohibits a dispensary from being within 1,000 feet of a pre-existing preschool, elementary or secondary school, or day care. A church or residential area being nearby does not violate code.

Rosignal turned to the crowd and warned they shouldn’t want it near their neighborhoods. Kopczick told Rosignal he was getting out of line, and he ended his speech.

Channahon swears in new trustee

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon Planning and Zoning Commissioner Chantal Host was sworn in Monday evening as the village’s newest trustee.

Host’s appointment fills the vacant two-year term that was held by Village President Missey Schumacher for half a term before Schumacher won the president’s seat in April.

Schumacher chose Host for the position, and the board unanimously approved her appointment.

“I wanted someone who is fiscally conservative,” Schumacher said, “because we are

good stewards of our tax dollars. ... Chantal has been on the Planning and Zoning Commission for several years, so she obviously has an interest in Channahon as a whole, and her family is also very much a part of this community.”

“I enjoy doing my work on the Planning and Zoning Chantal Host Commission,” Host said just before Monday’s board meeting. “This will give me the opportunity to have more of an impact on my community.”

From her years as a commis-

sioner, Host said she is knowledgeable about important issues facing the village, such as the Interstate 55/Route 6 interchange construction project set to begin this summer.

In her statement to the Village Board, Host wrote: “I have witnessed firsthand the challenges that our community has faced with recognizing our community identity and maintaining fiscal responsibility during economic hardships.

I offer my experience not only as a commissioner, but also as a small business owner and attorney.”

Schumacher said she approached Host regarding the vacant seat.

“I know her, and I know where she stands,” Schumacher said.

Schumacher said she will consider filling Host’s former commission seat within the next month.

IDOT open house planned

The Village Board on Monday also reminded residents of the Illinois Department of Transportation open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Channahon Village Hall.

Phase I of the construction of the Interstate 55/Route 6 interchange will begin in the village this summer, and IDOT representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the

project.

Channahon trustees also approved adding accessory buildings, such as unattached garages, to the town’s list of variations that can be requested by property owners.

According to Community Development Director Mike Petrick, village ordinances allow owners to request variances on six items on a piece of property. Those variances deal mainly with building setbacks, parking issues and sign area.

Now that list includes accessory structures.

Trustees may not allow a requested variation, Petrick said, but owners can petition to ask for a variation to be granted.

Owens leaving Joliet City Center Partnership

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The head of Joliet’s downtown development organization is moving to Lockport.

Pam Owens, executive director of the Joliet City Center Partnership, is leaving to become director Pam Owens of the Gaylord Building in Lockport.

Owens came to the City Center Partnership in May 2013 after leading the Main Street program in Moline.

At the Gaylord Building, she will work for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which owns the site.

The building, built in 1838, includes the Public Landing Restaurant and exhibition areas, including a gallery depicting the history of the Illinois & Michigan Canal.

Owens described historic preservation as “one of my passions” but added, “It’s been difficult for me to leave.”

Her last day at the Joliet City Center Partnership is June 19.

The partnership announced her departure Tuesday in a news release that commended Owens for her work on the downtown economic development plan still in progress and on a strategic reorganization of the partnership.

“A lot of the things that I hoped to accomplish when I got here I feel that I have accomplished,” Owens said.

“The economic development plan is going to be a great road map for the [City Center Partnership] board and the new executive director.”

The development plan is an initiative of both the partnership, which is affiliated with the Will County Center for Economic Development, and the city of Joliet.

Richard Fredrickson, a marketing and events consultant with the City Center Partnership, will serve as the organization’s acting manager until a new director is hired.

Partnership Chairman Rod Tonelli said the board will review criteria in its last search for a director before it advertises for the opening. He said the board has not decided on the search’s extent.

“Certainly we’ll be looking locally, but we’re going to extend that.”

While Pruitte was serving time in the Illinois River Correctional Center, the .380-caliber handgun he was carrying was matched as the gun used to kill Egner. Pruitte was charged with Egner’s murder on the first anniversary of his slaying.

Pruitte’s twin brother, Deamontae, was in prison on weapons charges at the time of Egner’s death. Like his brother, Deamontae Pruitte is being held in the Will County jail after allegedly being caught with a gun in Nowell Park in March.

JOLIET – A man accused of gunning down a stranger in a Joliet fast food parking lot three years ago will let a judge decide his fate.

Assistant Public Defender Jason Strzelecki said Tuesday that Daeviontae D. Pruitte, 21, will choose a bench trial next month before Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes. Jury selection was scheduled for Monday, but prosecutors requested a delay because three witnesses – a Joliet police officer and two crime lab technicians – were not available.

“I expect we’ll have no more than 20 witnesses [total],” Assistant Will County

State’s Attorney Mike Fitzgerald told Alessio Policandriotes.

On Aug. 1, 2012, Timothy L. Egner arrived at Wendy’s, 104 N. Center St. in Joliet, to pick up an employee. Egner, 54, parked near the doors of the building and waited in his green Acura with the lights on and the engine Daeviontae running for D. Pruitte about a halfhour.

At 2:40 a.m., two men approached the car and shot the Crest Hill resident five times, police said. Nothing was taken from the victim.

A couple of Whitcomb’s family members were in Kathmandu, Nepal, a day before the earthquake. Medina’s sacrifice means a lot, even though Whitcomb didn’t know her personally.

“I know she had a lot of spunk,” Whitcomb said, noting she has many nieces serving in the Navy.

ROMEOVILLE – Duke Realty has signed new leases with three businesses that will occupy more than 496,000 square feet of space along the Interstate 55 corridor in Bolingbrook and Romeoville.

RTC Inc., a designer of retail marketing displays, has expanded into a 97,920-squarefoot space in the Crossroads Business Park, while extending its original 190,080-squarefoot lease – meaning RTC now occupies all of a 288,000-square-foot building, according to a press release from Duke Realty.

Meanwhile, APL Logistics, a third-party logistics services provider, signed a

new lease for two buildings at 515 Crossroads Parkway in the Crossroads Business Park in Bolingbrook.

JOLIET – Possible program funding is available to agencies and organizations that work with senior citizens through the Joliet Township Senior Tax Levy.

Will County offers spay/ neuter discount for pets

NEW LENOX – Will County residents who have their pets spayed or neutered at participating veterinary offices in June can receive a $40 county-sponsored discount.

The discount applies for up to two animals a household.

More than 10,000 pets have been treated since the program originated in 2007, according to a news release from Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. To be eligible for the $40 discount: • Pet owners must show proof of residency in Will County; • Pets must be registered with Will County Animal Control and reside with the owner; • Proof of current rabies vaccination and Will County registration tag must be provided on the day of surgery; • Rabies vaccination can be administered on the day of surgery, as well as registration tag purchase; • Surgery must take place between June 1 to 30.

Pet owners should call their veterinary office and confirm that the facility is participating.

NEW LENOX – At the May 20 New Lenox Community Park District Board meeting, three recently re-elected commissioners were sworn in for four-year terms.

Re-elected were Brian Fischer, Dale Larson and Garry Krae-

mer. These three commissioners bring a combined 37 years of experience serving on the Park Board, according to a news release from the district.

The three were congratulated and all of the commissioners were thanked for their volunteer service to the park district and the community.

JOLIET – Local residents are invited to join Jerry Morales and John Gomez of baseball fame, along with the Joliet Park District, for the dedication of Joseph L. Belman Field at Desmond Park (Henderson and Columbia) in Joliet.

The ceremony is scheduled for noon Saturday, which also is Opening Day of the Spanish Community Center Youth Baseball/Softball Program, according to a news release from the Park District. Passed suddenly Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Born in Chicago to the late Henry and Genevieve (nee Shourek) Gillis, residing in the Joliet area since 1990.

Member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Joliet Elks Lodge #296.

Survived are her loving husband of 29 years, Frank J. Gonciarz of Joliet; three children, Jenny (Mike) Darcy of Tinley Park, Steven (Yolanda) Walsh of Pasadena, TX and Bryan (Sheri) Walsh of LaGrange, TX; two stepsons, Mark Gonciarz and Michael Gonciarz, both of Chicago; 15 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Pat (Chuck) Hendrix of Greenfield, TN and Donna Lee of MO; her brother, Harry Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard was employed as a purchasing agent by Uniroyal Chemical at the Joliet Arsenal and Cardox for many years. Richard was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. He will be missed by his family and friends, especially dear friends, Pete and Paul.

Arthur J. Melcher, age 92, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with his family by his side.

Born September 22, 1922, in Braidwood, he lived in Joliet most of his life. Art was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II. After the war, Art and his brother, Don, had a Clover Farm Grocery Store in Frankfort.

Art began his career with State Farm Insurance in New Lenox, where he was an insurance agent for 34 years retiring in 1995.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 58 years, Dorothy (Hayes) Melcher, and that union was blessed with Art’s eight surviving children, Jim (Judy), Ray (Sue), Sharon (Craig Woodworth), Bob (Bonnie), Bill, Marianne Melcher, Terrie (John) Murphy, and Kathy Miller; 22 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Art was blessed to find love and companionship again, and is survived by his current wife, Marilyn Sackman Melcher, and that seven year union added to his family, David (Mary Ellen) Harris, Linda (Terry) Stapleton, and Darren (Marie) Sackman; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nephews.

Art was preceded by his parents, Arthur and Anastasia Melcher; three brothers; and one sister.

The family wishes to thank his doctors, Presence St. Joseph Medical Center Cardiac ICU, and Joliet Area Community Hospice Home for their excellent care and comfort given to Art and his family during his recent illness.

He was born in Joliet, IL to Caesar (Sky) and Dorothy Piunti. He went to Joliet West High School and graduated in 1968, he also attended NIU. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Survived by his wife, Sheila Piunti; three daughters, Roxanne (Craig) Knutson,

Sasha (Bryan) Diercks and Suzetta (Dimas) Baltazar; 4 grandchildren, Nathan Schwandt, Dylan and Alton Knutson and Elleanor Diercks; also survived by his mother, Dorothy Piunti; sister, Anita (Richard) Campbell; niece, Danielle (James) Marks; and nephew, Michael Bosse.

Rick played in the Marycrest Little League, he also was active in the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts Troop 239, Explorers, he also attended The World Jamboree. He received awards for Order of the Arrow and earned Eagle Scout. He enjoyed bowling and watching the Indy 500 and Chicago Bears with his family.

Born August 23, 1923, in Joliet to Joseph and Josephine (nee Setina) Erjavec. Graduate of St. Joseph Parochial School in 1936, St. Francis Academy in 1940 and College of St. Francis in 1944. An elementary teacher at St. Joseph Parochial School from 1964-1975 and school crossing guard for the City of Joliet from 1985-2004 Mason, Plainfield Road Wilcox. A democratic election judge precinst #26 and volunteer usher at the Rialto Square Theatre.

Jean Marie Neiner, age 76, of Spokane, Washington, formerly of Gravois Mills, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015, with her family by her side.

She was born September 2, 1938, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Norma Pauling Hauert. She was united in marriage on July 2, 1960, at the United Church of Christ in Peotone, Illinois, to Dale E. Neiner, who passed away June 14, 2010.

Jean was a registered nurse and worked for the State of Illinois.

Jean and her husband were also farmers for 40 years in the Peotone/ Manteno, Illinois area, raising hogs and grains. She was a past member of the United Church of Christ in Peotone, Illinois.

Jean retired to Gravois Mills, Missouri, in 1996, where she was a former member of the Osage Community Elks Lodge #2705 in Laurie, the Lake Bloomers Garden Club, and the Red Hats Society. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, and boating.

Jean is survived by one son, Alan Neiner (Wendy) of Burnsville, MN; two daughters, Dalean Neiner and Debra Baldwin (Larry) of Spokane, WA; five grandchildren, Nicholas Baldwin, Bethany Hansen (Shelton), Christopher Neiner, Elizabeth Neiner, and Kevin Neiner; one brother in law, Francis Neiner of Bourbonnais, IL; and honorary sister by love, Joyce McKay of Joliet, Illinois and many other relatives and friends.

Judge delays Hastert arraignment in hush-money case

CHICAGO – A federal judge Tuesday delayed former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s first court appearance until next week after his indictment in Chicago in a hush-money case.

The Illinois Republican was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, but the hearing has now been pushed back to Tuesday.

The change was made without explanation in a one-sentence court filing by U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin’s clerk.

The 73-year-old former congressman was charged last week in an indictment that alleges he

agreed to pay $3.5 million to ensure someone from the town where he taught and coached high school wrestling stayed quiet about his “prior misconduct.”

No attorney has spoken on Hastert’s behalf and no lawyer is named on his court docket.

The indictment charges Hastert with evading bank regulations by withdrawing $952,000 in increments of less than $10,000 to skirt reporting rules. He also is charged with lying to the FBI. Each count carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.

FBI behind mystery surveillance aircraft over U.S. cities

WASHINGTON – Scores of low-flying planes circling American cities including Chicago are part of a civilian air force operated by the FBI and obscured behind fictitious companies, The Associated Press has learned.

The AP traced at least 50 aircraft back to the FBI, and identified more than 100 flights in 11 states over a 30-day period since late April, orbiting both major cities and rural areas. At least 115 planes, including 90 Cessna aircraft, were mentioned in a federal budget document from 2009.

For decades, the planes have provided support to FBI surveillance operations on the ground.

But now the aircraft are equipped with high-tech cameras, and in rare circumstances, technology capable of tracking thousands of cellphones, raising questions about how these surveillance flights affect Americans’ privacy.

“It’s important that federal law enforcement personnel have the tools they need to find and catch criminals,” said Charles Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. “But whenever an operation may also monitor the activities of Americans who are

not the intended target, we must make darn sure that safeguards are in place to protect the civil liberties of innocent Americans.”

March of Dimes announces research center in Chicago

CHICAGO – Studying how discrimination and poverty might alter gene regulation and lead to premature births will be a major focus for a new research center launched Tuesday in Chicago.

Bringing together scientists at three medical institutions, the new March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center will try to identify the gene functions responsible for ensuring a pregnancy continues to full term and how prolonged stress may affect those functions.

The project will combine work from researchers at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University Feinberg School of

Medicine and Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina.

Agriculture officials ask county fairs to beware of bird flu

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Agriculture is warning county fair operators to take extra precautions this summer to stop the spread of poultry and livestock diseases.

The agency sent letters to more than 100 county fairs urging biosecurity measures. The letter asks local fair officials to adopt a formal plan on disease response or to update existing plans.

The measures are precautionary in response to an outbreak of avian influenza that killed millions of chickens and turkeys nationwide, according to State Veterinarian Mark Ernst.

Congress sends NSA phone records measure to Obama

By ERICA WERNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Congress approved sweeping changes Tuesday to surveillance laws enacted after the Sept. 11 attacks, eliminating the National Security Agency’s disputed bulk phone-records collection program and replacing it with a more restrictive measure to keep the records in phone companies’ hands.

Two days after Congress let the phone-records and several other anti-terror programs expire, the Senate’s 67-32 vote sent the legislation to President Barack Obama, who said he would sign it promptly.

“It protects civil liberties and our national security,” Obama said on Twitter.

The president signed the bill late Tuesday, but officials said it could take at least several days to restart the collection.

The legislation will revive most of the programs the Senate had allowed to lapse in a dizzying collision of presidential politics and national security policy. But the authorization will undergo major changes, the legacy of agency contractor Edward Snowden’s explosive reve-

lations two years ago about domestic spying by the government.

In an unusual shifting of alliances, the legislation passed with the support of Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, but over the strong opposition of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. McConnell failed to persuade the Senate to extend the current law unchanged, and he came up short in a last-ditch effort Tuesday to amend the House version as nearly a dozen of his own Republicans abandoned him in a series of votes.

“This is a step in the wrong direction,” a frustrated McConnell said on the Senate floor ahead of the Senate’s final vote to approve the House version, dubbed the USA Freedom Act. He said the legislation “does not enhance the privacy protections of American citizens. And it surely undermines American security by taking one more tool from our warfighters at exactly the wrong time.”

The legislation remakes the most controversial aspect of the USA Patriot Act – the once-secret bulk collection program allowing the National Security Agency to sweep up Americans’ phone

records and comb through them for ties to international terrorists. Over six months, the NSA would lose the power to collect and store those records, but the government still could gain court orders to obtain data connected to specific numbers from the phone companies, which typically store them for 18 months.

It also would continue other post-9/11 surveillance provisions that lapsed Sunday night, and which are considered more effective than the phone-data collection program. These include the FBI’s authority to gather business records in terrorism and espionage investigations and to more easily eavesdrop on suspects who are discarding cellphones to avoid surveillance.

In order to restart collection of phone records, the Justice Department will need to obtain a new order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

“This legislation is critical to keeping Americans safe from terrorism and protecting their civil liberties,” Boehner said. “I applaud the Senate for renewing our nation’s foreign intelligence capabilities, and I’m pleased this measure will now head to the president’s desk for his signature.”

Days over for ‘make believe’ state budgets?

SPRINGFIELD – There are three ways to “balance” a state budget: raise taxes, cut spending or play “make believe.”

At least, that’s the explanation a budget director for a former governor gave me years ago.

The Illinois Constitution requires that the Legislature not budget to spend more money than it expects to take in the coming year.

In other words, it requires a balanced budget.

For years, lawmakers have gotten around this requirement by playing “make believe” with the numbers.

They’ll pretend the state’s anticipated revenues will be greater than any realistic projections show. The lawmakers then call the plan “balanced” and pass it into the law.

This legal fig leaf is responsible for the state racking up billions of dollars in deficits year after year.

But now, the fig leaf is gone and House Speaker Mike Madigan is baring it all.

Last week, he announced he would push through a budget that spends $3 billion more than what he believes the state will collect in taxes. (The actual number may be closer to $4 billion; but, hey, what’s an extra $1 billion?)

Regardless, the speaker of the House stood in front of a room full of reporters and announced he was going to work to send an unbalanced budget to Gov. Bruce Rauner.

And that is what he did.

And not a single reporter thought to ask, “Gee, Mr. Speaker, isn’t that like, you know, unconstitutional?”

Madigan is trying to force Rauner and Republican lawmakers to support a tax increase by passing a spending plan first.

It would be like if your spouse headed to the mall with your credit card and announced, “Honey, the reason I spent so much today is because I want you to go out and get a second job, and I thought this

It’s a scenario that only makes sense in the twisted world of Springfield politics.

Madigan started out his news conference saying he believes Rauner was “reckless” for introducing a budget in February he believes had a $2 billion hole in it.

Madigan’s solution?

Introduce his own budget with a $4 billion hole in it.

What does that make him? Super-duper reckless?

But more importantly, doesn’t his conduct violate the constitution he swore to uphold?

Sadly, those questions aren’t getting asked.

But they set the stage for what likely will be the biggest political battle in Illinois history.

Rauner has vowed to veto any unbalanced budget, and he said he won’t support a tax hike until there is substantial reform of the state’s business and political climate.

Madigan has balked at some of the political reforms because they threaten his entrenched power.

So both sides are now preparing for political war.

And Rauner is determined to get his message out.

On Sunday he said, “Speaker Madigan has been the one constant in Illinois politics for more than 30 years. We’ve been driven into the ditch. You know what? The truth hurts. And you know what?

The truth needs to be known. And if anybody wants to hide from the truth, so be it. The truth needs to be known by the people of Illinois.”

That portends for a brutal summer.

But, at least, no one is playing “make believe” anymore.

On Saturday, more than 400 of the 2015 LTHS graduates were shown just how much their “village” cares about them when they attended Senior Late Night 2015. This is a 100 percent donation and volunteer-run event. LTHS supplies the space, and the community supplies the food, prizes and cash that enable the volunteers to throw a safe, substance-free celebration that always will be remembered.

The volunteers are parents, teachers, alums and family members. They start meeting in November and reach out to the community for donations through graduation day.

The donations come from businesses, clubs, chamber of commerce and parents throughout Lockport, Homer Glen, Crest Hill, Joliet and many other locations. The graduates are welcomed to their alma mater for an all-nighter filled with fun, entertainment and food provided by their “village” year after year.

I am a parent who has been honored to volunteer for this tremendous event for three years. This outpouring of support needs to be acknowledged and is to be greatly admired. I want to thank everyone

involved in making this happen. Indeed, this entire “village” should be proud.

Rauner bashing blames wrong person for Illinois’ mess

To the Editor: It seems that Illinois has had a recent influx of immigrants from Mars or somewhere else equally distant.

That must be the explanation for not knowing about 30-plus years of what it has been like living in Madiganistan and blaming Gov. Bruce Rauner for all the bad things that have been going on here.

I’m surprised that Rauner is not being blamed for the Civil War, the Johnstown Flood and the Chicago Fire.

That would be like bringing in a relief pitcher in the seventh inning while losing 25-0 and blaming him for losing the game.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, this may come as a complete surprise to the new arrivals, but Illinois is in deep doo-doo, and we all are going to be paying for it.

We elected Rauner to fix what House Speaker Mike Madigan and company have done. It’s going to hurt, but like cancer surgery, maybe it will cure us.

Lincoln-Way East edges Lincoln-Way Central

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Rachel Twohig started a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, and her pinch runner, Julianna Simon, scored the winning run as Lincoln-Way East escaped Lincoln-Way Central, 2-1, Tuesday in a softball semifinal of the Class 4A Joliet Central Sectional.

The Griffins’ Nikole Van Gennep and the Knights’ Melanie Bakotic waged a honey of a pitchers’ duel. Central third baseman and cleanup hitter Naidelyn Medina broke up a scoreless deadlock in the fourth inning when she drove her sixth home run of the season onto the railroad tracks beyond the center-field wall with two outs and nobody on base.

“I just wanted to get a good hit and start a rally,” Medina said.

Medina had singled leading off the second. She represented the only two baserunners against Van Gennep until Jackie Farbak doubled in the sixth.

Van Gennep, who finished with a four-hitter, walked nobody and struck out 10. Bakotic allowed two runs on six hits, walked nobody and struck out six.

Unfortunately for Bakotic, the run off her in the seventh was unearned. After Twohig’s single, Olivia Prieto sacrificed. Leadoff hitter Ami Ill also bunted. Bakotic probably would have had the out at first but tried to cut down the lead runner.

With Medina charging and shortstop Alyssa Klahn not yet at third, Bakotic waited briefly, then threw toward third. It tipped off Klahn’s glove, and Simon started toward home, stopped, then raced home with the walk-off run.

“Melanie [Bakotic] came off the mound aggressively,” Central coach Jeff Tarala said.

“Sure, you could say she could have gone to first, but I’d never fault Melanie for anything.

She has meant so much to our program.”

“We’ve been battling all this time, working so hard,” Medina said, fighting back tears.

“All those hours that we’ve gotten together.”

for the Knights (27-11), who fell, 4-3, to the Griffins (27-4) in last year’s regional semifinals and 3-2 in this regular season on a run in the seventh inning.

“Those were good games, too, but somehow this one felt different,” Tarala said. “This was the first time we were up on them. When we went up, 1-0,

you couldn’t convince me we were going to lose this game. I wouldn’t have believed it.”

“The important thing for me was I couldn’t let it [Medina’s homer] bother me,” Van Gennep said. “I had to let it go. This game was scary, but a lot of fun.

We really wanted it.”

After Medina’s homer, East

got even in the bottom of the fifth on Jenny Van Geertry’s triple off the base of the wall in right and Alana Selvaggio’s sacrifice fly.

Central had a chance in the top of the sixth when Farbak hit a one-out double. But with two outs, second baseman Prieto backhanded Colleen McLaughlin’s bid for hit up the middle and threw her out to end the inning.

East had runners on second and third after Nicole O’Donnell’s one-out double in the second, but Bakotic struck out the next two hitters. Prieto led off the third with a double, but Bakotic again met the challenge.

Twohig’s hit leading off the seventh was her second straight. She and Medina were the only players on either side with two hits.

“We needed a big rally, and once we get started, we usual-

ly keep it going,” Twohig said.

“That pitch I hit was outside.

She [Bakotic] was throwing me a lot outside, and I like it outside.”

Twohig said she wanted to stay in the game and run for herself, “but I knew she [Simon] was the best one.”

“It was crazy when we scored the winning run,” Van Gennep said. “I didn’t know what happened. I saw her [Simon] stop, and then she started up again.”

The Griffins will meet the winner of Wednesday’s Plainfield Central vs. Homewood-Flossmoor game in Saturday’s sectional final.

“Our girls had a great season,” Tarala said. “Lincoln-Way East is a great team.

I thought maybe when we got up, 1-0, we could rattle them, but they are well-coached and a tough team to rattle.”

MORRIS – On Tuesday, a day after winning the Class 3A Ottawa Regional softball championship, 2-1, over LaSalle-Peru, Morris opened play in the Morris Sectional against Joliet Catholic. The Angels had won the Kankakee Regional the previous day with a 2-1 win over Lincoln-Way West.

Much like the day before, the game was close throughout. The Angels came away with a 3-2 victory and advanced to Saturday’s 11 a.m. sectional championship against the winner of Wednesday’s Oak Forest-Peotone game.

Errors cost the Redskins in the top of the third inning. JCA leadoff hitter Reilly Jo Swanson hit a popup foul to third, but it was dropped. Swanson then singled to right before Brenna Garland hit an infield single to short. Winning pitcher Alyssa Callans then doubled to left-center, scoring Swanson with the game’s first run. Josie Henderson then grounded to third, but the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, loading the bases. A grounder to short by Meghan Harrison was booted for an error, bringing home Garland. Alivia Phelps hit into a fielder’s choice to short, with Callans forced out at the plate for the first out.

Paige Callans then singled to center to score Henderson for a 3-0 JCA lead. Kayla Bennett grounded to short, with Harrison forced out at home, before Caitlyn Spreitzer popped to the catcher to end the inning.

“One bad inning,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “We haven’t had one of those in a while. They were a problem for us at the beginning of the year, and, unfortunately, it came back to bite us in a big game.

“But, being in the situation we were in, it could have been a lot worse. The girls buckled down and relaxed and kept the game within our grasp. Janelle [Brehm] made a couple of nice plays at short to cut down a couple of runs.”

Morris countered in the bottom of the fourth. Ashley Phelps led off with a single,

After a flyout, a grounder back to the mound moved Doss to second. Taya Torkelson singled to right, scoring Doss to make it 3-1. After Torkelson stole second, Melissa Benson doubled to right, scoring Torkelson to cut the lead to 3-2.

A passed ball moved Benson to third, but Callans got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Morris had a runner on second in both the sixth and seventh innings, but each inning ended with a line drive back

and third in the fifth and left one on third in the seventh.

“We have hit the ball pretty well the last couple weeks,” JCA coach Dave Douglas said.

“We hit the ball hard, and their shortstop made a couple of good plays, or we could have had some more runs. Alyssa did a nice job pitching, and our defense made the plays they should have.”

One play that stood out was a running catch deep in left-center by Garland on a ball hit by Abby Burns in the sixth.

O’Fallon ends Joliet West’s exciting run

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com ALTON – After pulling off a series of dramatic postseason wins, it looked as if Joliet West’s boys volleyball team was about to rally for its biggest victory yet, the one that would qualify it for its first trip to state.

But O’Fallon, another darkhorse squad seeking its initial appearance at state, spoiled the party for the Tigers by capturing an 18-25, 25-22, 2523 victory in Tuesday’s Alton Sectional championship.

The Panthers (24-9-6) grabbed a 4-0 lead in the finale and still were up, 15-9, before the Tigers (26-12) staged one last rally. West took leads of 20-19 and 21-20 before O’Fallon closed things out with consecutive kills from Luke Meidel.

“I knew that they were going to come back and push after Game 1,” Tigers coach Jason Herrmann said. “So

Game 2 was a wash; and then in Game 3, they came out a little tougher than we did at the beginning. We were running out of time and points and weren’t as fresh. But give credit to O’Fallon, since they came back and played hard.

“I’m proud of my boys and with the run that we’ve made since we worked hard.

It’s great for the young guys to learn about playing as a family and being able to come back from any kind of deficit by believing and trusting in one another. Really, all that matters is the bond that we all built and the memories that we had from the last week and a half.”

In the finale, O’Fallon seemed to be in control after taking a six-point lead. But Juwann Jackson (19 kills) recorded consecutive kills, Matt Wyman added a block, and Kyler Van Rossum-O’Connell (33 assists, 11 digs) served up an ace to create a tie at 17.

It was back and forth after that, with West holding one-point leads on kills from Jackson and Luke Van Eck (seven kills). Then Van Rossum-O’Connell and Jackson tied the score on kills before the Panthers wrapped things up.

“It’s a frustrating end to our season,” Jackson said.

“I’ve been playing for them since this is my family. We’re definitely not the same team as we were at the beginning of the season. In every win that we’ve had in the playoffs and in this loss, we played so hard.

Our team definitely made a big leap forward from last year, when we lost seven seniors.

Even though we lost a lot of great guys, people stepped up, fit into their spots and got the job done.”

The middle set was even early before O’Fallon eventually built up a 21-16 lead. West answered with two kills by Jackson and a hitting error to

close to within 22-21 but could get no closer.

“I’m proud of our team, since we set the record for the best finish by a Joliet team,” Wyman said. “We all had each others’ back, and no one got down on each other, since we were one big, happy family.

This was my favorite year of playing volleyball, and this was my favorite team, since everyone was just so close. I’m proud of how we did.”

In the opener, the Tigers led early and built a 22-15 advantage after going on a 6-2 run that featured a shared block by Max Ahern and Wyman, a kill from Scott Lyman, an ace from Josh Lakota and a kill from Jackson. West also received nine digs from Chris Beltran.

“We worked really hard the last couple of days of practice and even stopped halfway through the bus trip to stay loose,” Lyman said. “There were a lot of upsets through-

out the playoffs, and nobody expected us to be playing; but they’re a good team, and we matched up pretty well. We stepped up our serve-receive in the back row, which made our front row even better, especially during the playoffs.

We were a family and got along really great.”

The Tigers graduate Jackson, Ahern and Wyman among Tuesday’s starters. Much of the squad returns and hopes to builds on this season.

“We were both underdogs in regional championships and sectional semifinals, and we were evenly matched,” Van Eck said. “I don’t really think a lot of people thought that we’d come this far. We made a lot of improvements along the way, and this is the best that West has ever done, so this is great.

Coming together at the end of the year was big for us. If we can make a couple of small improvements next year, I think that we can get back here.”

CLASS 4A DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH SECTIONAL SOFTBALL SEMIFINAL: DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH 7, PLAINFIELD EAST 3

Plainfield East puts up fight vs. strong opponent

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Plainfield East softball team’s strong season ended Tuesday when it lost to the top-seeded team in the Downers Grove South Sectional. The 7-3 loss to Downers Grove South was no indication how the Bengals played, however.

East was in the game until the bottom of the sixth inning; and even after they trailed, 7-3, in the final inning, the Bengals still pushed for a comeback.

“I really thought that we were going to pull through after my home run,” Grace Cowan said. “And we were able to score that third run. Even in that last at-bat, I thought that Peyton [Loesch] was going to tie us. I think that we were all there until the end, and it just didn’t turn out the way that we hoped it would. But what can you say? They’re 36-1.”

lon team, East played well in the first four innings.

In the top of the inning with two outs, Hannah Kalnicky doubled, Michaela Sinnott singled and Kalnicky was being waved home. Downers Grove South catcher Rebekah Ondracek tagged Kalnicky hard to the head, and it took a while to move Kalnicky off the field because she was experiencing concussion-like symptoms.

South had two doubles and a single in the first inning to make it 2-0, but Plainfield East (22-11) responded in the next inning after it lost one of its top hitters in Kalnicky.

Bianca Vozenilek singled in the second, and Cowan delivered a two-run homer, evening the score at 2.

In the third, Jessica Rio singled. Samantha Pratscher, who had replaced Kalnicky, advanced Rio to second. When Rio went to steal third base, the Mustangs committed an error, and Rio scored to give

the Bengals a 3-2 lead.

Vozenilek and Cowan started the fourth with singles, and Jasmin Torres moved the two into scoring position with only one out. The Bengals couldn’t capitalize, however, and South took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning.

“I’m really proud of their effort,” East coach Chris Morris said. “That’s one of the best teams – if not the best team – in the state, and I thought that we stood with them toe-for-toe.

They had six strikeouts, we only had two strikeouts. The unfortunate part is when we hit the ball hard a lot of times – which we did – we hit it right at people.

“They had a couple breaks.

We didn’t help ourselves with a couple of defensive plays.

That’s sometimes the way it rolls, but I felt like we were there every step of the way.”

The Bengals might be there every step of the way in the fu-

ture seasons as well. East will graduate only three starters from the sectional semifinal.

One of the strong returning players will be Vozenilek for the next two years. The sophomore pitcher had a 6-2 strikeout advantage over Downers Grove South’s Buresch.

“I thought that Bianca on the mound did a great job,” Morris said. “I thought that for the most part – except for a couple of pitches – that she outpitched the other pitcher. Most people in the softball world say that the other pitcher would have been the better pitcher.

I thought that Bianca was every bit as good, if not better, today.”

Offensively, seniors Cowan and Rio led the Bengals. Cowan was perfect from the plate with a two-run homer and two singles and Rio had two hits, a steal and run. Rio will continue her softball career at Northern Illinois, while Cowan decided to not play collegiately.

“This was my last softball game ever,” Cowan said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better team to back me up. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to go out. I’m really proud of this team. This is the best team in East history, for sure.”

“We had a great season,” Rio said. “I’ve been on varsity for four years, and this is by far the best season that I’ve ever been a part of. We all stepped up because this team is the same team from last year except for one girl who was a senior last year. You can tell the difference from last year and this year in our communication and in our skill level. Last year, we lost the first game of regionals and now we made it to sectionals.

“It’s sad. It’s hard to not play with these girls next year. It’s definitely hard to lose, but I don’t regret anything that we did this game. I think that we did everything that we could.”

Slammers return home, fall Lemont headed to to Greys despite early lead state after 1-0 win

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Slammers and the Blackhawks. Quite the combination for a Wednesday night in ideal weather conditions.

During Tuesday’s 8-3 loss to the Frontier Greys at Silver Cross Field, the Slammers announced they would show Wednesday night’s Blackhawks versus Tampa Bay Lightning game on their new video board during Game 2 of the series against the Greys.

Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final and baseball at Silver Cross Field. Two for the price of one, as it were.

Meanwhile, the Slammers (6-10) returned from a rugged road trip to face the Greys in the hopes that home cooking would have a positive effect.

For a while, it appeared that would be the case as righthander Aaron Vaughn shut out the Greys (6-8) through five innings.

To that point, Slammers catcher Jack Cleary was the offensive hero. He doubled in the

second inning and scored on JD Williams’ sacrifice fly, then singled home Hunter Ridge, who had doubled, in the fifth to make it 2-0.

In the sixth, however, the Greys knocked out Vaughn with a three-run uprising. Sam Moore relieved during the inning and allowed Brandon Tierney’s go-ahead, RBI single.

Moore and reliever Kevin McNorton ran into more difficulty in the seventh when the Greys – who do not have a home ballpark – added four runs on three hits, a walk and two errors to make it 7-2. The Slammers committed four errors in all.

Joliet got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on Alfredo Rodriguez’s single, an error on Cleary’s hot shot to third and Max Casper’s RBI groundout.

The Greys’ starting pitcher, right-hander Jordan Krause, lasted seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

He was relieved by left-hander Brent Choban to open the eighth, and two left-handed hitters reached off him to open

the inning. Nate Roberts was nicked by a pitch, and Russell Moldenhauer doubled to right-center to put runners on second and third.

However, Choban struck out Mike Garza and retired Chris Serritella on a fly to short left before walking Rodriguez to fill the bases. Slammers manager Jeff Isom sent up right-handed hitting Phil Bates to hit for Ridge, and he flied to right on the first pitch. Just like that, a huge opportunity to get back in the game had gone by the boards.

Scott Carcaise blasted a long home run off John Maloney, the fourth Slammers pitcher, just inside the rightfield foul pole in the ninth to up the Greys’ lead to 8-3.

The Greys closed out the victory with right-hander Nick Anderson pitching the ninth inning. He struck out Cleary, Casper and Williams in order to end it.

The Slammers have not announced their starting pitcher for Wednesday night. Andrew Strenge is set to work the series finale Thursday night.

MIAMI – Brad Hand pitched six innings to earn his fifth victory in 33 career starts, and the Miami Marlins beat the Cubs, 5-2, Tuesday.

Hand (1-1) improved his career record as a starter to 5-18. Even with the victory, his winning percentage as a starter (.217) is the lowest in the majors among active pitchers with at least 20 decisions, according to STATS. Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo homer, his 16th. He has seven of Miami’s 14 homers at Marlins Park this year.

Rookie Addison Russell’s baserunning blunder helped A.J. Ramos earn his fifth save in seven chances. The Cubs had runners at first and second with one out

when Chris Coghlan singled to right, but Stanton fielded the ball and threw out Russell taking too big a turn at second.

Miguel Montero then struck out to end the game.

Hand allowed six hits and two runs. The left-hander, who came into the game with a career batting average of .058, also singled and scored.

Hendricks gave up four runs in six innings. Junior Lake had a pair of doubles and drove in a run for Chicago.

Gallo HR, record 4 RBIs in MLB debut, Texas top Sox ARLINGTON, Texas – Joey Gallo hit an upper-deck homer, doubled off the top of the wall and set a Rangers franchise record for a major league debut

with four RBIs as Texas beat the White Sox 15-2 in a series opener Tuesday night.

Gallo, the top prospect in the Rangers organization, made the jump from Double-A Frisco for what is supposed to be a short stint while four-time All-Star third baseman Adrian Beltre is on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left thumb.

With the bases loaded in the first, Gallo hit a hard shot that got past Gold Glove first baseman Adam LaRoche. It was scored a “bad-hop single” that drove home the first two runs off Jeff Samardzija (4-3).

When Gallo came up two innings later, he hit the first pitch into the upper deck in right field – an estimated 418 feet – for a 6-2 lead.

Panayotovich, All-American: St. Francis senior pitch-

er Adam Panayotovich has been named to the NAIA Baseball All-America first team.

Panayotovich, the Chicago Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year,

ranked second in the NAIA in victories (12) and innings pitched (114), eighth in strikeouts (114) and 13th in fewest walks a game (1.03).

The right-hander concluded his career as USF’s alltime leader in wins (39) and strikeouts (342).

Panayotovich, who earned Capital One Academic All-District accolades last month, was 12-3 with a 1.97 ERA and notched three shutouts and combined for a fourth.

Fred Hoiberg introduced as new coach

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Fred Hoiberg looked at the Bulls and saw a deep and talented roster with a chance to contend for a championship – an opportunity that was too good to pass up.

The long-rumored pairing of Hoiberg and the Bulls became official on Tuesday when the former NBA guard and executive left Iowa State to become the 19th coach in franchise history, replacing the fired Tom Thibodeau.

The Bulls are hoping a new voice is just what they need to contend for a title after a season that began with soaring expectations ended in disappointment. The Bulls struggled to win 50 games during a difficult regular season and bowed out to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference

“I love this roster,” Hoiberg said. “I love the versatility of the players, the different lineups that we’re going to be able to play. You can play small, you can play big. You’ve got lineups that I think can really get out and play with pace. You’ve got a

great group of veteran players that know how to play. I think Tom Thibodeau is an excellent, excellent basketball coach, and I think he instilled a lot of unbelievable qualities in this team that hopefully I can build on.”

Hoiberg went 115-56 at Iowa State and led the Cyclones to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles.

He had open-heart surgery in April, his second such procedure in the past 13 years or so. But he insisted he would not do the job if it endangered his health.

He takes over a team that fought through injuries and never seemed to click the way they expected. The effort that carried the Bulls in previous seasons was not there.

Tensions between their coach and management mounted and Thibodeau was fired last

week. Gone was the team’s most successful coach since Phil Jackson, a man who had led the Bulls to a 255-139 record and playoff appearances all five seasons even though Derrick Rose suffered season-ending injuries to each knee.

The Bulls said at the time that they would begin a search. But it was no secret who they were eyeing.

General manager Gar Forman said he and chairman Jerry Reinsdorf met casually with Hoiberg last week. Talks began and they finalized the deal Monday night.

“We didn’t know it would move this quickly,” Forman said.

Hoiberg, who played for the Bulls, called the job “an unbelievable opportunity” and thanked their management, along with his Iowa State players and athletic director Jamie Pollard.

By GREG BEACHAM The Associated Press TAMPA, Fla. – The Blackhawks headed south this week to secure a dynasty, and the Tampa Bay Lightning are the only obstacle left.

Jonathan Toews and his teammates have raised the Stanley Cup twice in the past five seasons, compiling a wealth of big-game accolades in seven years as an elite team. They are just four wins away from a third NHL title that would establish them as

the most accomplished club of their era.

The Hawks shrug off the weight of history, preferring to focus on the opener of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday.

“You never want to rest on your laurels,” the Hawks captain said Tuesday after practice at Amalie Arena.

“You want to keep creating new moments and new memories.”

The hungry Lightning look at the Hawks’ achievements and see everything they want.

After surviving a perilous 20game run through the Eastern Conference playoffs to earn the franchise’s second trip to the final, uncharted territory doesn’t scare this young Tampa Bay core.

“There’s no doubt that’s a team that you measure yourself against,” Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos said.

“They’ve been on top for so long, it seems like they were always there.”

While the Hawks’ roster is dominated by two-time champions, Valtteri Filppula is the

Lightning’s only player with a Stanley Cup ring. Most of the Hawks’ stars are still largely in their primes, but Tampa Bay has the youngest roster in the postseason. Hawks coach Joel Quenneville has two rings, while Tampa Bay’s Jon Cooper has coached just two full NHL seasons.

“We know they’re more experienced, but we’re still excited to be here,” Tampa Bay forward Ondrej Palat said.

“We’re going to do everything it takes to win the Stanley Cup.”

Master fine art of deceptively simple tossed salad

By SARA MOULTON The Associated Press Summer time is salad time.

When it’s hot out and the garden is bountiful, everyone’s in the mood for a light and refreshing entrée salad.

And what could be easier?

You just toss together a bunch of lettuce with some cooked protein, add an excellent dressing, and boom, you’re done. Or not. Turns out if you pay a little more attention to the components of the salad, you won’t need to rely quite so much on the dressing to provide all the flavor. In fact, it’s easy to make something wonderful.

Here’s the basic formula per serving of salad: 2 cups of lettuce, a heaping 1⁄3 cup of halved cherry tomatoes, 1⁄3 cup of sliced cucumbers, a quarter of an avocado (cubed), and 1 tablespoon of dressing. The key, though, is to season each and every part one at a time, and to do so at just the right moment.

It’s also important to deal with the water. Vegetables contain a high percentage of water.

If you remove some of that water, you concentrate and amplify the vegetable’s flavor.

Let’s start with the cherry tomatoes. You’ll be amazed at how much more tomato-y they’ll taste after they’ve been salted and drained, preferably for 30

The cutting technique for an avocado. minutes. Cucumbers, likewise, become more cucumber-y with salting, although the salt also tenderizes them. If you care more about a cuke’s crunch than its flavor, skip the salting of them.

While the tomatoes and the cucumbers are draining, you should cut up the avocado, put it in the bottom of the salad bowl, season it and toss it with the dressing. This last step prevents it from oxidizing and turning color. Pile on the additional ingredients as they become ready.

After rinsing the lettuce, spin it dry or gently pat it dry with paper towels. Dressing will slide

The avocado then is soaked in dressing. right off of wet greens. Keep in mind a variety of lettuces is more enticing than just one kind, and mixing in whole herb leaves with the greens makes a salad extra special.

Finally, after all of the components have been prepped and added to the bowl, sprinkle the greens with a little salt and pepper and toss the salad with your hands. Lettuce bruises easily. Your hands are exactly the right tool for this delicate job. Now that your basic salad is dressed and ready to go, top it off with grilled chicken, shrimp, beef, pork or tofu to turn it into a substantial summertime entree.

SIDE Tossed Salad 101

Start to finish: 50 minutes (15 active) Servings: 4

1½ cups cherry or grape tomatoes Kosher salt 6 ounces English cucumber 1 firm ripe avocado 8 cups lightly packed torn lettuce Ground black pepper ¼ cup dressing Set a wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet.

Halve the cherry tomatoes and arrange cut side up on the wire rack. Sprinkle the cut sides liberally with salt, then turn the tomatoes so the cut sides are down. Let stand for 30 minutes. Peel the cucumber if it has a thick skin. Halve it lengthwise, then slice it thinly crosswise.

Toss the sliced cucumber with some salt and let drain in a colander set in the sink for 30 minutes.

Quarter the avocado, remove the pit and lay the avocado, skin side down on the counter. Using a paring knife, make a crisscross pattern in the flesh in ½-inch cubes, cutting down to the skin. Use a spoon to lift out the cubes and transfer them to a salad bowl. Sprinkle the avocado lightly with salt and toss gently with a fork. Add the dressing and toss again.

When the tomatoes and cucumber have sat for 30 minutes, pat them dry with paper towels and add them to the bowl with the avocado. Add the lettuce, sprinkle with salt and pepper and use your hands to toss the salad very gently just until the leaves are coated. Serve right away.

by themselves and most of the time don’t need treatment. There are two types of treatment.

There are pills and ointments or solutions to put on the sore when it first appears, in order to make it go away faster. There also are pills to keep cold sores from coming back as often, for people who get them frequently.

The treatments (pills or ointments) to make cold sores go away faster have to be started at the very first sign -- the tingling or unpleasant feeling I noted earlier -- before the skin starts to change. Even when treatment is begun early, studies find that it shaves off less than a day from what would have been the natural resolution of the sore.

The pills I generally recommend are one of two antiviral drugs, taken just for one day: famciclovir and valacyclovir.

The liquids that you put directly on the sore include acyclovir, penciclovir, benzalkonium chloride and docosanol. The latter two are available over-thecounter. Over-the-counter anesthetics like benzocaine can numb the skin and help relieve pain and discomfort.

Applying ice at the first sign of a cold sore may also help shorten the duration or avert a full-blown sore.

Finally, when you do have a cold sore, keep your hands away from your eyes. HSV infection of the eye is rare, but it can be serious if it occurs.

Dear Doctor K: I get painful cold sores in my mouth every couple of weeks. Why do I get them? And what can I do to make them go away faster?

Dear Reader: Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) Types 1 and 2.

HSV Type 1 is the most common cause of cold sores. Type 2 more often causes genital herpes, but it can also produce cold sores.

HSV spreads easily from person to person; at least half of all adults are infected with the virus. Once you are infected with HSV, you have the infection permanently. The virus lies “sleeping” inside the nerves, causing no symptoms most of the time. In some people, the virus periodically “wakes up” and causes cold sores.

Cold sores most often occur on the edge of the mouth, usually in the same place every time.

That’s because the virus lives in the nerves that lead to that spot on the skin.

A cold sore usually begins with a slight tenderness or tingling.

It develops into a painful, swollen red lump.

During this time, the virus in the sore is highly contagious.

After a day or two, the area blisters, bursts and crusts over. Then the yellow crust peels away and secretes a clear liquid.

It can take up to two weeks for the sore to heal.

The following conditions or circumstances seem to cause cold sores to reappear: anxiety, stress, sunburn, hormonal changes and physical exhaustion.

Cold sores also often develop when you have a fever, which is why people sometimes call cold sores “fever blisters.”

It has always been about Mom’s needs, not ours. I, for one, plan to put her unopened letter in her coffin to be buried with her when the time comes. Her letter is just a final hurtful arrow to stab us with, and I already have had a lifetime of that. I don’t need her to damage me further.

Dear Abby: I’m having a hard time getting over a secret my boyfriend, “Wayne,” kept from me. We have been off and on for 14 years, but back on for the past four.

The problem is, he had a child with a woman in a different country. The child is now 9.

Wayne didn’t mention it until four years ago, during our last breakup. It bothers me that he kept it from me.

I have since met the woman and the child, but my trust in my boyfriend is strained. In the back of my mind I keep wondering what else he hasn’t told me.

Abby, he was always against having kids with me.

He said he didn’t want any.

Now I wonder if it was because he already had one.

Wayne is surprised I’m so challenged by this. He says he and the woman dated for only a few months, then broke up because he didn’t feel they were compatible.

Now it appears he may also have a problem leveling with you.

If you have to make a choice about whom to believe, I think you should believe the mother of his child because by telling you what she did, it’s clear she wasn’t trying to make herself look any better.

Dear Abby: My 85-year-old mother told me that upon her death she is leaving each of her children a letter expressing to them how they have hurt her throughout the years.

Never once has she acknowledged how deeply she has hurt US. It affected our childhood and adulthood.
