Morris began as a location on the proposed Illinois and Michigan Canal, which when completed, created the final link between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico.

During its construction from 1836 to 1848, Morris was one of several towns around Chicago that grew up along its banks. In time, Morris would help supply canal contractors, provide housing for workers, and entice newcomers to Grundy County.

Soon, Morris would be become the county seat, and with canal business and other commercial concerns located in the area, it was not surprising that many excellent hotels began operating here, including the Commercial Hotel, the Carson House, the Kay House and the Washington House (Wagner House).

In 1867, Phil Lehr constructed a wooden hotel with a large gable roof on the north side of Main Street, between Liberty and Wauponsee Streets. Conrad O. Wagner soon purchased the building from Lehr and renamed it the Washington House Hotel.

Conrad, who was born in Prussia in 1828, eventually had two sections added to the west of the building in 1875 and 1877. Home-based business needs to convince Plainfield Village Board

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield resident Nicole Perez bought some pies from a supermarket bakery for Christmas festivities.

Shortly after the holiday, she and her husband were sitting together and drinking wine.

“None of the pies were that great, and the whole process of getting them was just a pain,” Perez said. “We were drinking wine and I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be a great idea?’ ” That idea was fusing their fondness of pies and wine into one. And soon after, a new, small, innovative business – All Pied Up No Place To Go – was born. Perez and her neighbor, Stacy Straub, are selling wine-infused pies baked out of their homes.

But before they continue growing their business, they need to convince the Plainfield Village Board to pass a “Cupcake Law” that would allow them to operate in their home kitchens free from local health regulations.

Wine-infused pies

In addition to selling normal pies, Perez and Straub are testing consumers with five wine-infused pies: apple, blueberry, cherry, four-berry – containing blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and cherry – and peach.

Right now, the pair uses a specific wine for each pie.

“We have the wine paired up to the pie,” Perez said.

“Once people tried it, they loved it. It’s pretty much down to a science at this point.”

Perez doesn’t have much of a baking background, but Straub did. So while Perez worked the business end, Straub started baking.

“We started looking for recipes that looked good, something not too complicated,”

Straub said. “We found good recipes that really went together with what we do, and tweaked it to make it our own.”

Straub said the pair also bakes “pietinis,” or small 3-inch single-serving pies for people who want a taste. They also offer deep dish 8-inch and 11-inch pies.

More pie options will come in the future. Perez said they are experimenting with other alcoholic beverages.

“Our fall offering might be a vodka caramel apple pie,” Perez said.

Cupcake Law

Illinois lawmakers last summer passed the “Cupcake

Law” legislation that allows small businesses that sell baked goods out of their homes to bypass local health require-

ments that can often be costly and impractical for homebased businesses.

The issue came up when

the Madison County Health Department shut down an 11-year-old Troy girl’s cupcake business early last year, citing she didn’t have the proper permits to be in compliance with the Illinois State Food Sanitation Code.

The law allows people to run a home kitchen operation as long as monthly gross sales don’t exceed $1,000, it isn’t potentially hazardous, and a notice is given to the customer or placed on packaging stating the product was made in a home kitchen.

Ticket sales up for Rialto 2015-16 season Festival of Trees to be replaced

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ticket sales are up sharply for 2015-16 season at the Rialto Square Theatre, which is good news for theater managers dealing with a string of problems over the past year.

The Rialto has sold $348,000 in tickets for the new season, doubling what was sold last year at this time, Rialto General Manager Randy Green told members of the theater’s board last week.

“It shows the real strength of the shows,” Green said.

It also stirred up some hope for a better fiscal year than the last one.

“It’s a much better start than last year,” outgoing Chairman James Smith said of the advance ticket sales.

Rialto officials went to the City of Joliet this month for a $300,000 advance on the annual city contribution to the theater, saying the money was needed because of cash flow problems.

“It shows the real strength of the shows.”

Smith said the Rialto financial problems started with unusually weak advance ticket sales a year ago. The problems were aggravated by the ensuing marquee developments in which the Rialto has spent nearly $200,000 on a new sign that is not likely to be used because of opposition to the design.

No more Festival of Trees

In another financial development, Green announced that the annual Festival of Trees, a major fundraiser for the Rialto held at Christmastime, will be replaced by a new fundraiser.

Green said the new fundraiser will be announced around Labor Day.

The Rialto’s financial prospects apparently have improved enough that the board gave Green the go-ahead to

hire a development director, who would be the key person in raising money from donors for the theater.

The position has been vacant since late last year.

Rialto seeks marquee bids; final price unknown

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The final bill for the Rialto Square Theatre marquee is still being tabulated.

But the price tag is headed toward $237,000 – and possibly higher – as the Rialto board looks at updating the existing marquee rather than moving ahead with a new sign that was stopped in mid-production after community opposition to its design.

The Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, the board that oversees the Rialto, last week voted to seek bids on work needed to use the existing marquee.

Green told them the update will cost at least $40,000, according to a quote he received from Landmark Sign Group.

The price covers the cost of installing electronics in the existing marquee, but not the entire cost of updating the sign.

The board did not make a final decision to restore the old sign but took steps in that direction.

Some good news for advocates of keeping the existing marquee is the existing sign can be updated with a new electronics board.

“They [Landmark] said, yes, it could be accommodated and modified for that board,” Green said.

The $40,000 cost of the elec-

tronics update comes on top of the $197,000 bill for the unfinished marquee stopped in mid-production after opposition arose to the design. That marquee is now sitting in pieces at Landmark Sign Group’s plant in Indiana.

Updating the existing sign will involve other costs.

Green said Landmark’s price does not cover the cost of repairing the facade of the existing marquee, painting the vertical sign that rises above the marquee, replacing incandescent lights with LED lighting, and adding wiring and conduit to connect a new message board to a computer that will control messages on the sign.

The board voted unanimously to seek bids for that work, showing its inclination to move ahead with the update recommended by a committee to examine the issue.

New board Chairman Dan Vera also told Green he should consult with the Rialto’s attorney on whether bids are needed for the electronics that would go into the marquee, rather than going straight to Landmark to do the work.

“Now you’re dealing with a different sign. It’s not the one that was created,” Vera said.

Green said after the meeting he had no idea of the potential costs of the work being put out to bid.

But the Rialto at one point

estimated the price of a new marquee with a message board and repainted vertical sign at $350,000. The money was to come from a donation made by retired businessman Ed Czerkies. But Czerkies took his money back when the Rialto put the marquee on hold amid a controversy that include opposition to a planned memorial to his parents placed on the marquee.

Rialto officials have considered salvaging the words “Rialto Square Theatre” from the unfinished marquee and putting them on the back of the theater along Scott Street.

Other than that, no one on the board last week suggested using the new sign.

MORRIS – One person has been killed as a result of the multi-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon that shut down westbound Interstate 80 near Morris for more than three hours.

One of the people injured in the collision died, Grundy County Coroner John Callahan confirmed Sunday afternoon at Morris Hospital’s emergency room. The identity of the deceased was not immediately released.

The crash, which involved five vehicles, occurred at 1:22 p.m. Sunday just east of Route 47.

The preliminary investigation found that unit one was entering I-80 eastbound from Route 47 and it cut off unit two, a vehicle traveling east on I-80, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

“Unit two swerved to the left and drove off the roadway, through the center median ditch and went airborne into the westbound lanes of I-80,” according to a news release.

“Unit two struck three vehicles in the westbound lanes.”

Besides the fatality, three people were taken to area hospitals.

The types of vehicles and names of the drivers were not released as of press time.

I-80 westbound near Route 47 in Morris was shut down because of the crash and did not reopen until after 5 p.m., according to Illinois State Police, and traffic eastbound was shut down intermittently. Traffic westbound was detoured to Brisbin Road.

At least one helicopter was brought in to assist people with serious injuries, a state police spokesman said.

The application, draft permit, and other documents are available for inspection and may be copied at the Agency between 9:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Ex-county employee to challenge Larry Walsh Sr.

McPhillips, a 48-yearold mother and wife from Plainfield, is now a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker in Naperville. With two Laurie decades expe- McPhillips rience as a Will County employee, McPhillips said she’s running as an administrator, “not a politician.”

McPhillips, a Republican,

said she held her first job with the county at the age of 18, later working her way to county administration and then director of operations under former County Executive Joe Mikan, where she prepared the budget and oversaw major capital projects.

She said her budget experience will be key as the county embarks on a number of major capital projects – including the planned Laraway Road sheriff’s facility and a new Will County Courthouse.

McPhillips held the county’s Recorder of Deeds position from 2004 to 2008 before losing in both 2008 and 2012 to Recorder Karen Stukel.

McPhillips also served two years on the Will County

Board after being appointed to fill a vacancy.

Walsh, who has been county executive since 2004, was unavailable for comment Friday, but his chief of staff, Nick Palmer, said Walsh Sr. has “definite plans” to seek re-election.

Palmer said Walsh Sr. intends to run a positive campaign, but “not be afraid to point out differences.”

McPhillips said she has been active with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Joliet Junior College Alumni Association, United Way’s Food and Shelter Board and the Zonta Club of Joliet, a women’s service organization.

She said she served 16 years on the Habitat for Humanity’s board, including two years as president.

The day after the tornado hit Coal City, Kristin Rhoads was on her Minooka wellness studio’s Facebook page (Nurture the Journey) calling for donations to help out the affected families.

Thanks to social media, Rhoads was able to connect with enough people to get some of the things needed by Friday, the first day volunteers were allowed in to help with the massive clean-up efforts.

People are getting to know what to bring when disaster strikes, Rhoads said. Bottled water for one; bleach and paper towels are high on the list, too.

This is the second time in two years, with Diamond’s 2013 tornado being the first, that Rhoads has reached out to the community and surrounding towns asking for assistance for tornado victims.

Her clients jumped right in, of course, but Rhoads could hear the yoga/massage studio doors open and shut while she was in classes or giving a massage as people dropped off supplies.

Rhoads checked the Grundy County Community Organizations Active in Disasters Facebook page for a list of needed supplies, and then she posted those to her own Facebook page.

From past experience, she also knew that water and snacks are needed for clean-up days to feed the volunteers.

Rhoads was just 12 years old and living in Plainfield when the 1990 tornado devastated that area. She had just gotten off the school bus when it started hailing. Her bus driver told all the kids to run for cover immediately.

She found safety at a neighbor’s home, but she’ll never forget the way the sky looked and the sound of the approaching tornado.

People want to do something to pitch in, “so this is a way for them to do a little piece,” she said.

Along with donations from the community, Rhoads teamed up with neighboring business Mastercraft Exteriors, out of Rockton. Mastercraft rented a suite in downtown Minooka after the hail storm a few weeks ago.

While the company only does roofing and repairs, they sent crews out to Coal City the day after the tornado to help people find their personal belongings, employee Mike Hart said.

Their huge pick-up trucks were perfect for hauling the supplies out to Coal City on Friday.

MINOOKA – The village of Minooka gained one more resident, named NASTSQUAD, last week. Although loud at times, this resident makes the streets more colorful and is about community service – bridging the gap between law enforcement and the public.

NASTSQUAD is a 2006 Dodge Charger pulled out of a junkyard as a retired police vehicle, and now resembles a NASCAR vehicle with a bold paint job with orange, black, blue and purple colors and sponsor stickers. This car will be used for Drug Abuse Resistance Education school programs, car shows, the Special Olympics and other public events.

“We will use this car to bring the kids to us. It’s a more personable approach.

The kids ask, ‘What is this?’ and we can use that to open up a line of communication,” Community Policing Officer Denis Tatgenhorst said. “It gets us interaction and conversation.”

Tatgenhorst said in those conversations police and Minooka Young Explorers can give a perspective on what police do for the community and why, make the police more approachable and teach children about positive choices. The Explorers program is for youth interested in law enforcement.

The car is covered in reminders of how to make good choices. The hood is covered

with D.A.R.E. responses to children being pressured into drinking alcohol or taking drugs.

Officer Robert Latz will become the new fifth-grade D.A.R.E. instructor this fall, and will utilize the vehicle for his meetings with the students. The vehicle’s name, NASTSQUAD, is a play on NASCAR, Tatgenhorst and Latz’s names.

“I want to provide kids with the tools they can use when at school to make good choices, and get to know them and so they feel comfortable coming up to me to discuss a problem,” Latz said. “When the kids talk to the police officers, we don’t want them to see the police as big scary people.”

On the back of the vehicle is a meaningful tribute.

“In NASCAR, the rookies usually have a stripe of yellow on the back, but instead of the yellow, we had a thin blue line painted to remember our fallen officers,” Tatgenhorst said.

Tatgenhorst said the police department sought sponsorships and in-kind donations for the car’s restoration, so there was no cost to the village. There also was inkind donations of transmission and engine work, the roll bars, etc. The car still needs product support for tires, wheels and stereo equipment.

The Rev. Alvin “Doc” R. Abbott delayed or shortened because someone in the church had died and Alvin wanted to be present for the family.

“If he got calls in the middle of the night or at dinner, he took the time,” Chrystal said. “He never gave up on people or things close to his heart.”

Stronghold Camp was dear to Alvin because he felt kids needed to spend time cooking over an open fire, seeing animals in their natural environ-

ment, gazing up at stars and basking in God’s creation.

“What better place for kids to see the awe and wonder of God,” Chrystal said, “and how good he was that he could care about a little cricket.”

The Rev. Matthew T. Robinson, current pastor at Westminster, said Alvin was a “jovial, upbeat guy,” one who sincerely lived his faith and found joy in it. Matthew said Alvin supported him in his own pastorate, served the presbytery on a local and regional level, and had connected people who should be connected.

“I came here a stranger,” Matthew said, “but thanks to

active in band boosters at Joliet West High School, when Al Jr. and his brother Brad, now the executive director of a Lutheran camp in Colorado, both participated in band.

Al Jr. said the music teacher held Alvin responsible for ensuring God never rained on their parades. Ironically, not once in the six years that Alvin had sons in band did it ever rain during a performance.

“Dad never took credit for it,” Al said, “but he laughed about it and thought it was funny.”

Part of Alvin’s joy was his quirky sense of humor, but his legacy is a faith in God that was embraced and enjoyed. Alvin was 85 when he died March 28 “I told people at the funeral that God welcomed him home the way he welcomed others, with open arms,” Al said.

“Dad’s God was a God of love and fun and fellowship, and it showed.”

Lipinski announces grant for Lewis University THE HERALD–NEWS ROMEOVILLE – U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, announced last week that the National Science Foundation has awarded Lewis University in Romeoville a $201,123 grant for a project entitled “Implementing and Investigating Mathematical Modeling as a Means to Demonstrate the Interdisciplinary Nature of Science and Increase STEM Retention.”

With funding from the foundation’s Improving Undergraduate STEM Education Program, the project – under the direction of Cynthia Howard – will address the established and growing national need to increase the quantity and diversity of science, technology, engineering and

mathematics undergraduate majors as well as improve their preparation to enter the workforce, according to a news release from Lipinski.

The funding award starts Wednesday and is the second foundation award Lewis University has received this year for a STEM-related project.

“Congratulations to Lewis University on this well-deserved award,” Lipinski said in the news release. “As a former teacher and one of only a dozen engineers in Congress, I have always been a strong advocate for improving STEM education at all levels.”

The project team at Lewis University will redesign Calculus for Life Sciences by adopting and adapting evidence-based best practices in the mathematical modeling of biological systems; develop-

ing students’ computational skills with respect to real-life problems; and fostering interdisciplinary and coopera-

tive student interactions and learning. Faculty from biology, computer science and mathematics will collaborate

to design this course, primarily for biology and computer science majors, according to the news release.

So said Chrystal Abbott-Ronchetti of New Lenox, daughter of the Rev. Alvin “Doc” R. Abbott, pastor emeritus of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Joliet.

In addition to pastor, Chrystal said Alvin was a fantastic father, friend, role model and community leader, someone who never really retired.

“He believed that people of different faiths should come together and serve the Lord together,” said Chrystal, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Manteno. “No matter what faith you were, he really tried to be a positive influence in the community and in people’s lives.”

Alvin was a founding member of Stronghold Camp & Conference Center in Oregon and an active member of the Joliet Ecumenical Clergy Association, Project Pride and the Joliet Arsenal Regional Advisory Board.

Matthew said he, Alvin and the Rev. Ted Glidden – a retired minister who worships at Westminster – combined their efforts to team-lead Bible classes. Alvin also participated in a Bible study for clergy where his penchant for detailed record-keeping really shone.

Alvin had material saved from 30-some years of Bible study and could share information on both the material and the presenter for any given day. Alvin also saved minutes from meetings of every kind.

“He could pull out any sermon he ever preached,” Matthew said.

Alvin served just three churches during his ministry, said Alvin’s son, Al Abbott Jr. of Normal. From 1954 to 1962, Alvin served First Presbyterian Church in Green Valley.

From 1963 to 1969, Alvin was pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Clinton. Alvin then was pastor at Westminster until his retirement in 1994.

During those years, Alvin raised his family with his wife, Donna, a retired nurse.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy said the Cupcake Law is scheduled to be considered for vote during the village’s next regular board meeting, which is July 6.

“The Cupcake Law is a win-win for us and the village,” Perez said. “You’re going to have to trust people who bake in their house to a certain extent. We’re able to create a product in a sanitary manner and are even more cautious because of this.”

Ann loved to sing in the St. Anne church choir. She loved Sunday picnics at St. Joe’s Park and was an active member of the community.

Court ruling makes Chicago Pride parade ‘a true celebration’

CHICAGO – People filling streets and sidewalks for Chicago’s annual gay pride parade said Sunday’s event was particularly meaningful – and an even bigger celebration than usual – after the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling allowing same-sex marriages in all 50 states.

“It’s like the perfect timing. I swear [the Supreme Court] did it on purpose,” laughed Andrea Lin, 28, of Chicago, who was attending her first Pride parade in Chicago. “We’re finally maybe getting accepted.”

It was also a first time for Nikita Lowery of Chicago, who said she felt like she needed to attend this year given the historic significance of the court’s decision.

“I feel like it’s a true celebration now,” the 28-year-old said.

More than 1 million people attended Chicago’s parade last year – the first parade after samesex marriage became legal in Illinois – and even more people were expected Sunday.

Among those making an appearance were Democratic Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and the Stanley Cup, which rode on a WGN Radio float along with representatives of the Blackhawks.

Kirk participated for the first time as he campaigns to hold on to his seat next year in what’s expected to be one of the most competitive Senate races.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who’s challenging Kirk, also attended.

Bernard Cherkasov, CEO of the gay-rights advocacy group Equality Illinois, said there’s still work to be done to ensure gay people are treated equally. But he said Sunday also was about celebrating “all of the victories.”

Rauner’s request for 5 business reforms hold up budget

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner has an answer to the state Capitol budget impasse: adopt five “structural reforms” that make it cheaper to do business in Illinois.

House Speaker Michael Madigan of Chicago calls the proposals “extreme” and anathema to legislative Democrats. Even though the budget plan they sent to the Republican governor was short on revenue by up to $4 billion, they said it protected vital services and implored him to deal with spending before pressing his “turnaround agenda.”

Rauner vetoed the bulk of it last week. Wednesday’s debut of the 2016 fiscal year – and the threat of disrupting some state services – looms large.

The new governor has whittled his dozens of bold, far-reaching and conservative initiatives to a handful: a property tax freeze, restrictions on liability lawsuits,

compensation for injured workers, term limits for lawmakers and a fair method for drawing officeholders’ districts.

“Take everything else off the table,” Rauner said earlier this month, “and it’s in exchange for those five real reforms that we’ll negotiate in good faith about a truly balanced, constitutional budget.”

Illinois budget stalemate hitting U of Illinois campus

​URBANA – The state budget standoff already has some programs and projects on hold at the University of Illinois, and faculty and others say they’re nervous about what might be ahead.

Gov. Bruce Rauner wants deep state spending cuts and has frozen a number of programs until a budget for the new fiscal year is complete. On Thursday he vetoed most of a $36.3 billion budget approved by legislators. It was more than $3 billion short on needed revenue.

According to The News-Gazette, projects to improve the country’s power grid and install solar panels on the new Electrical and Computer Engineering Building on the Urbana-Champaign campus are on hold. And the Illinois Smart Energy Design Assistance Center in Champaign will close Tuesday, at least temporarily putting several dozen employees out of work.

Rauner earlier this year proposed a 31.5 percent cut in higher-education spending. The state provides only about 11 percent of the university’s $5.6 billion operating budget, but the governor’s first proposed cut in that state appropriation would still mean a loss of more than $200 million.

Release of man who killed Chicago officer upsets police

CHICAGO – A man who shot and killed a Chicago police officer as a teenager in the 1970s has been freed from prison, and

some officers and the victim’s daughter are upset.

According to the Chicago Tribune, a parole board voted Thursday to release 58-year-old Joseph Bigsby from the Danville Correctional Center. He left the eastern Illinois prison that night.

Bigsby was 16 in 1973 when he killed officer Edward Barron.

Barron and fellow Officer Daniel Abate were chasing him after the robbery of an elderly man.

The now-retired Abate had been attending Bigsby’s parole hearings for more than three decades. Abate said in recent years the number of board members voting to release Bigsby had grown.

On Thursday in Springfield, at Bigsby’s 28th hearing, the vote was 8-6 to set him free.

But one member of the board who voted for freeing Bigsby, former Champaign police officer Donald Shelton, said that while the decision was difficult, Bigsby deserved to be released.

By MICHAEL BALSAMO The Associated Press MALONE, N.Y. – The second of two convicted murderers who staged a brazen escape three weeks ago from a maximum-security prison in northern New York was shot and captured near the Canadian border on Sunday, two days after his fellow inmate was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement, authorities said.

“The nightmare is finally over,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared at a news conference.

A state police sergeant shot David Sweat in the town of Constable, about 1½ miles south of the Canadian border and 30 miles northwest of the prison, after spotting him walking along a road and recognizing him, Cuomo said.

Sgt. Jay Cook was alone and on routine patrol when he stumbled upon Sweat. He gave chase when Sweat fled and decided to fire as the fugitive approached a tree line where Cook feared he would lose him, state police said.

“I can only assume he was going for the border,” Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said.

Sweat, who was unarmed, was struck twice in the torso and was taken to a hospital in stable condition, authorities said. He had not been formally interviewed by investigators as of late Sunday, but any information he provides could be critical to the investigation, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said.

Sweat will be charged with escape, burglary and other charges, Wylie said.

The inmates are suspected of breaking into some of the region’s many cabins during their time on the lam. Wylie said prosecutors would wait for Sweat to recover before charging him.

D’Amico said the men may have used black pepper to mask their trail; he said Sweat’s DNA was recovered from pepper shakers found at one camp where the fugitives may have spent time.

“We did have difficulty tracking so, you know, it was fairly effective in that respect,” D’Amico said.

Cuomo said many questions remained unanswered.

“We have already started a full investigation,” he said.

“But today ends with good news. These were dangerous, dangerous men.”

Matt and Sweat used power tools to saw through a steel cell wall and several steel steam pipes, bashed a hole through a 2-foot-thick brick wall, squirmed through pipes and emerged from a manhole outside the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.

Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole in the killing of a sheriff’s deputy in Broome County

in 2002. Matt was serving 25 years to life for the killing and dismembering of his former boss. They were added to the U.S. Marshals Service’s 15 Most Wanted fugitives list two weeks after getting away.

The search for the escaped killers was initially concentrated around the prison and a rural community where search dogs had caught the scent of both men. The search had since been expanded to neighboring counties, and, while authorities said there was no evidence the men had gotten out of the general area, they conceded they could have been almost anywhere.

“It’s a little unnerving, him being so close,” Constable resident Trevor Buchanan said Sunday. “I’m just glad it’s over.”

In nearby Malone, Cathy Leffler cheered outside Alice Hyde Medical Center, where Sweat was taken by ambulance. Jeffrey Gordon, a spokesman for Albany Medical Center, said Sweat was being transferred there for further treatment.

“I feel like I can sleep tonight,” Leffler said. “Life can go back to normal. It’s over now.”

Greece banks to stay shut amid crisis

By ELENA BECATOROS and DEMETRIS NELLAS The Associated Press ATHENS, Greece – Greece’s five-year financial crisis took its most dramatic turn to date Sunday, with the prime minister announcing Greek banks would remain shut for six business days and restrictions would be imposed on cash withdrawals.

The decision came on the recommendation of the Bank of Greece, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said during a TV address to the nation.

He didn’t immediately say what types of capital controls would be imposed.

The developments have thrown into question Greece’s financial future and continued membership in the 19-nation shared euro currency – and even the European Union.

For the past two days, Greeks have been rushing to ATMs to withdraw money across the country following Tsipras’ sudden weekend decision to call a referendum on creditor proposals for Greek reforms in return for vital bailout funds.

The government is urging Greeks to vote against the proposals, arguing that they are humiliating and would

Spooked by rumors concerning impending fuel shortages, drivers flooded gas stations across Greece, prompting the country’s largest refiner, Hellenic Petroleum, to issue a statement reassuring there are sufficient reserves of gasoline to last several months. The rush to gas stations may have been prompted less by worries about shortages than rumors – later confirmed – that only withdrawals of up to $66 a day from ATMs would be allowed; but another rumor, that use of credit or debit cards would not be permitted, proved untrue.

The referendum decision,

ratified by parliament after a marathon 13-hour session that ended in the early hours of Sunday, shocked and angered Greece’s European partners. The country’s negotiations with its European creditors have been suspended, with both sides accusing each other of being responsible.

Earlier Sunday, the European Central Bank decided not to increase the amount of emergency liquidity the lenders can access from the central bank – meaning they have no way to replenish fast-diminishing deposits.

“It is now more than clear that this decision has no other aim than to blackmail the

will of the Greek people and prevent the smooth democratic process of the referendum,” Tsipras said.

“They will not succeed.

These moves will have the exact opposite effect. They will make the Greek people more determined in their choice to reject the unacceptable ... proposals and ultimatums of the creditors,” he said.

The referendum is set for Sunday. But Greece’s current bailout expires Tuesday, and the $8 billion remaining in it no longer will be available to Greece after that date.

Without those funds, Greece is unlikely to be able to pay a $1.79 billion International Monetary Fund debt repayment due the same day.

Tsipras said he had renewed a request for the bailout to be extended a few days to allow for the referendum – a request that was rebuffed during the weekend by Greece’s European creditors.

Some European officials called for renewed efforts by both sides. “We don’t know – none of us – the consequences of an exit from the eurozone, either on the political or economic front. We must do everything so that Greece stays in the eurozone,” French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said.

Tunisia hunting for attack accomplices

By ELAINE GANLEY The Associated Press SOUSSE, Tunisia – The student who massacred holidaymakers on a Tunisian beach and at a swank resort hotel acted alone during the attack but had accomplices who supported him beforehand, an Interior Ministry official said Sunday.

Police were searching nationwide for more suspects after Friday’s slaughter of at least 38 people in Sousse, in Tunisia’s deadliest ever such attack. The attacker’s father and three roommates were detained and being questioned in the capital, Tunis, Interior Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui told The Associated Press.

The attacker has been identified as Seifeddine

Rezgui, a 24-year-old graduate of Tunisia’s Kairouan University, where he had been living with the other students. The attack was claimed by the radical Islamic State group.

“We are sure that others helped, but did not participate,” Aroui said. “They participated indirectly.”

Investigators believe the suspected accomplices provided the Kalashnikov assault rifle to Rezgui and helped him get to the scene, Aroui said.

Authorities have yet to suggest a motive for the carnage. A security official close to the investigation said the student frequented an “unofficial” mosque in the Tunisian holy city of Kairouan for the past two years.

Pope applauds ecology advocates

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis on Sunday encouraged people of different religions to work together in caring for the Earth, which he called our “common house.”

Speaking from his window in a Vatican palazzo to tens of thousands of pilgrims and tourists, Francis singled out a few hundred people who had marched to St. Peter’s Square under the banner “One Earth, one family.”

The marchers included Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus and others who had walked from near the French embassy to remind people of a key U.N. climate change conference in Paris in December.

“I encourage the collaboration between persons and associations of different religions on behalf of an integral ecology,” Francis said, offering good wishes to young people discussing what he described as “the care of the common house.”

In a recent encyclical, or church teaching document, about the environment, Francis wrote passionately about the world’s moral duty to save the Earth and move away from business systems that pollute.

For Francis, efforts to preserve the environment are an excellent way to bring together secular and non-secular forces, and especially members of various religions. Love for the environment also expands his papal agenda of highlighting social justice issues like poverty.

In his encyclical, Francis noted how the poor often suffer the most from pollution and from other environmental damage in developing countries.

The Vatican is putting on a panel Wednesday to draw attention to a conference in Rome later in the week being organized by the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace and by Catholic groups that work on development issues.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With a chance to equal a season-best win streak on the line Sunday, the Joliet Slammers also were trying to do something that they hadn’t accomplished yet this year.

The Slammers hoped to defeat Normal to not only capture their sixth straight victory but also sweep a second consecutive series.

Joliet saw a 6-2 lead slip away in the late going but scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to capture a 9-6 Frontier League win before 1,222 fans at Silver Cross Field.

After getting off to an 0-4 start, the Slammers won their next six to post their best record of the season. Before the current win streak, Joliet’s record was 12-21.

In the eighth, Hunter Ridge and Phil Bates led off with singles, and Jack Cleary sent a hard shot past third one out later to put the Slammers (1821) in front for good.

Alfredo Rodriguez followed with a run-scoring double to left, and Max Casper got an RBI blooper to center to complete the scoring. Reliever Kevin McNorton allowed three hits and struck out two in 21⁄3 innings to pick up his third victory.

“We’ve been down or it’s been close in pretty much all of our games, so I think that gives us some confidence since we’ve done it before in close games,” Rodriguez said. “Our hitting has been contagious. Early in the season, we had some tough games, but now we’re coming through with guys in scoring position and getting some

“There are some days where the balls don’t fall; but, luckily, I was able to string some at-bats together and help the team. We know that these guys are in our division, so we can catch up on them. But we’re just taking it one game at a time, and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Joliet grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third after Rodriguez led off with a walk, Sam Klein sacrificed him, and Charlie White got a single. Nate Roberts doubled down the right-field line to

drive in both runners but was thrown out going for a triple.

Normal (21-17) evened the score in the fifth when Ozney Guillen (3 for 4), son of former White Sox manager and player Ozzie, slapped a solo homer to right, and another run scored following an infield error.

That closed the books on Slammers pitcher Adam Giacalone, who was making his first start of the season. He allowed only three hits and one earned run while striking out three in five innings.

Joliet moved back in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Rodriguez again got things started with a walk, and Klein moved him over. After White walked and Roberts grounded out, Mike Garza got a two-out single to center to give the Slammers a 4-2 lead.

The Slammers grabbed a 6-2 lead in the sixth after Bates walked, Russell Moldenhauer doubled to the left-field fence to drive in one run, and Rodriguez got an RBI on a sac-

“Now we’re coming up with some big hits,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said. “And when you’re scoring runs, it takes a lot of pressure off of the pitching staff, and you can make some mistakes, like we did by giving up three home runs today. Even though the game was tied in the eighth inning, the guys were comfortable about coming up with big hits.

“We didn’t know what to expect with Adam out there.

I thought maybe he could put up zeroes one time through the lineup and that would be great, but obviously he exceeded those expectations. For him to go five innings and throw 75 pitches was good on his part.”

Normal fought back with three runs in the seventh inning as Richard Lucas doubled and Guillen followed with a blast to right field for his second home run of the contest.

The CornBelters added another run following a two-out error.

The visitors managed to pull even in the eighth when Aaron Dudley smacked a solo home run to right, but the Slammers responded to that scare by scoring three times in the bottom of the inning.

In the championship, the U.S. (4-1) met Brazil (4-0), which beat it in pool play June 24. Both teams have qualified for the 2015 FIVB U21 World Championship in Tijuana, Mexico, on Sept. 11 through 20.

graduate and Lewis athlete Mitch Perinar is a team member.

In the win over Canada, Brigham Young’s Brenden Sander had 20 of his team’s 47 kills. Penn State’s Chris Nugent had seven kills and two blocks while Perinar and Loyola’s Jeff Jendryk had five

kills and three blocks apiece.

That foursome started in all four sets for the U.S. squad.

A day earlier, the U.S. earned its spot in the semifinals after capturing a 25-19, 2518, 25-12 over Mexico. The U.S. collected 35 kills and owned a decisive 13-1 advantage in blocks.

Nugent had 10 kills in 10 attempts and Jendryk added eight kills and five blocks.

Sander added three blocks while Perinar (four kills) and Ball State’s Matt Walsh (five kills) supplied two blocks apiece. Nugent, Jendryk and Perinar started in each of the three sets.

SONOMA, Calif. – Kyle Busch’s comeback from serious injuries suffered a day before the season-opener now includes a victory.

Busch won Sunday on the road course at Sonoma Raceway, only his fifth race since he returned to the track after breaking his right leg and left foot in a Feb. 21 crash.

Busch was injured when he crashed into a concrete wall during the Xfinity Series race at Daytona. He missed 11 races but recovered far faster than anyone expected and returned to racing late last month.

His win at Sonoma was aided by a terrific restart with seven laps remaining.

On fresh tires, he picked his way past five cars and set his sights on leader Jimmie Johnson.

Johnson, who did not pit during the final caution, was a sitting duck for drivers on new tires. Busch ran down Johnson and grabbed his first Sprint Cup win since California in March 2014 – a streak of 35 races.

“This is awesome. Just unbelievable,” said Busch, who praised Joe Gibbs Racing and his medical team.

DETROIT – Jeff Samardzija struck out Miguel Cabrera with the bases loaded in the eighth inning – but as big as that moment seemed, another power threat was waiting on deck.

Victor Martinez cleared the bases with a tying double off Samardzija, and the White Sox went on to lose, 5-4, to Detroit on Sunday. James McCann hit a solo home run in the ninth to win it.

The Sox were ahead, 4-0, in the eighth, but Samardzija couldn’t hold the lead.

“After he got Miggy, and especially the way he did it, he

obviously still had something left in the tank to go after Victor,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “We were going hitter by hitter that inning, and we felt like Jeff was the best matchup.”

Samardzija allowed only two hits over the first seven innings, but McCann started the bottom of the eighth with a single. After a walk by Jose Iglesias and a single by Anthony Gose, the Sox right-hander hit Ian Kinsler to force home the first Detroit run.

Cabrera struck out, but Martinez found the gap in right-center to clear the bases on Samardzija’s 110th and final pitch.

Maly’s walk-off homer gives Whiteford title

By DRAKE SKLEBA Shaw Media Correspondent CREST HILL – In 1982, Crest Hill Baseball president Joe Marshall started the DuPage River Pony Conference for youths ages 13 to 14.

In the 34 years since the league’s inception, there may not been a more exciting conference tournament championship game than Saturday night’s at the Richland School diamond.

Whiteford’s Sam Buss (3 for 3, two RBIs) singled home Kevin Marcano, tying the classic at 5 in the bottom of the seventh.

For Buss, experiencing the joy of having tied the game at 5 with his third hit quickly was followed by the agony of being picked off at first base by Channahon starting pitcher Austin Markee for the second out of the inning.

Whiteford’s Cody Maly then stepped into the batter’s box, and Buss’ agony turned to sheer joy when Maly sent his teammates and the huge contingent from Whiteford into a frenzy with a walk-off homer over the left-field fence, giving Whiteford the 6-5 victory.

“It was an amazing feeling for me,” Maly said. “It felt like I was walking on air as I rounded the bases after hitting the walk-off homer to give us the championship.”

“I felt so bad after getting picked off after my game-tying hit,” Buss said. “I am so thankful to Cody for picking me up. I went crazy when the ball went over the fence.”

The DuPage River’s top two teams from the regular season advanced to the championship game with semifinal victories Saturday afternoon. Whiteford (26-1-2) dispatched Troy Titans Black (15-14), and Channahon Ace Builders (22-5-2) beat Cinderella Belmont (10-17) to reach the final. Whiteford and Channahon met three times in the regular season, with Whiteford winning once and the other two ending in ties.

After firing seven scoreless innings in the semifinals to defeat Troy, 4-0, Whiteford ace Trevor Hicks toed the rubber in the finale. Opposing Hicks was Channahon’s Markee.

“This was a total team effort,” Whiteford manager John Conn said. “To accomplish what we did this season, everyone on this team contributed to our success. We started this back in January, and here we are six months later where we wanted to be, as champions. Two great teams battled tonight, and it is a shame someone had to lose this great game.”

“I am so proud of my kids,” Channahon head coach Trevor Markee said. “They battled every step of the way tonight. We never quit.

“I am proud of Austin (Markee) for the way he battled on the mound all night for us.

FONTANA Calif. – Graham Rahal avoided a penalty despite driving out of pit road with part of his fueling mechanism attached and held on through a wild finish for his second career IndyCar victory.

On other day, that would have been the big news.

After a frenetic day of racing that culminated with Ryan Briscoe hurtling through the air at the finish, all the drivers wanted to talk about was surviving.

Rahal ended a 125-race winless streak by taking the checkers at Auto Club Speedway on Saturday, but there was more criticism of IndyCar than praise for the

third-generation driver after a white-knuckle day of pack racing on the 2-mile oval.

“We shouldn’t be racing like this,” reigning Indianapolis 500 champion and points leader Juan Pablo Montoya said. “This is full pack racing and sooner or later somebody is going to get hurt.”

IndyCar mandated changes on aero kits for the 500-mile Fontana race exerting more downforce on the cars in hopes of combating high temperatures that were expected to turn Auto Club Speedway slick.

Montoya was among the most vocal foes of extra downforce, saying it would lead to the type of pack racing that is entertaining for fans but dangerous to drivers.

In today’s deal, the declarer needs the discipline to look for the potential danger to his contract and the talent for spotting how to survive it.

South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond three. Given that the trumps are 3-2, how should declarer plan the play?

South has three top losers: two spades and one club. A possible bad trump split would probably occur to everyone, but after taking the first trick and drawing trumps in three rounds, it would be easy to let one’s guard down. What other hurdle might declarer have to dodge?

If clubs are 3-2, the contract will roll home; but what if they are 4-1?

If East has ace-fourth, the contract is hopeless. If East has a singleton ace, starting the suit from the dummy will work, but then probably West would have led the club 10 at trick one. Instead, South should worry about West’s having ace-fourth.

Declarer should cash his other two diamond tricks ending in his hand, then lead a low club toward the dummy. When the jack wins, South exits with a spade. West takes two tricks in the suit, but he is then endplayed.

When West leads a low club, declarer plays low from the dummy, wins in his hand, and leads another club toward the dummy.

scribed antibiotics when they were pretty sure the patient had a strep throat.

The problem was doctors weren’t terribly good at making that judgment.

As a result, antibiotics often were prescribed in people with sore throat caused by viruses.

Overuse of antibiotics, in turn, led to bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics – which has become an important problem.

The way a doctor today diagnoses and treats a patient with acute pharyngitis is not very different from the way it was decades ago. From my perspective (with which not all my colleagues agree), it should be different today.

One thing that has changed is that 70 years ago, an unrecognized and untreated throat infection with Group A strep could cause one of two serious diseases: acute rheumatic fever or acute glomerulonephritis. The first is a condition that can damage the heart valves, and the second can damage the kidneys.

Early diagnosis and treatment greatly reduced the chance that these diseases would develop. Today, however, the Group A strep circulating in the United States are much less likely to cause these diseases.

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll talk about what else has changed in how a doctor should diagnose and treat a patient with acute pharyngitis. It turns out the “simple” sore throat is not simple at all.

doctor last week, who said I had acute pharyngitis, but didn’t say what that was. It sounds serious. What is it?

Dear Reader: Good news: It’s rarely serious.

I know the word “acute” in front of any medical term makes it sound serious. And I know Latin-based words like “pharyngitis” sound alien. But acute pharyngitis simply means your throat has become inflamed by something, usually an infection.

Acute pharyngitis causes a sore throat, one of the most common medical problems for which people seek medical care.

The most common causes of acute pharyngitis are infections with bacteria or viruses.

When I was in medical school, we were taught that a patient with a sore throat had either an infection with a type of bacteria called Group A streptococcus (“strep”) or with any of multiple viruses. Group A strep was diagnosed with a throat culture and was treated with antibiotics, particularly penicillin.

Since antibiotics do not work against viral infections, antibiotics were not to be prescribed except when the throat culture showed Group A strep. So, I was taught that what a doctor did for a patient with acute pharyngitis was simple: You got a throat culture, and if it showed Group A strep, you prescribed antibiotics.

It did seem simple.

The problem was it wasn’t that simple in practice.

One reason why was that the results of a culture took one to two days to come back. You had to track down the patient when the culture came back showing Group A strep, and then start treatment. To avoid the time those steps took, many doctors just pre-

Dear Abby: My son is being deployed for 10 months. His wife and baby are coming to live with me, and I am thrilled.

for five weeks. The 13-yearold has been acting out. He has been rude to his school bus driver, disrespectful to his mother, was the “class clown,” and shows all the signs of an uncomfortable pubescent boy without a safety net.

We are two states apart, so it would be difficult to lend a hand. My grandsons are very close to me, and there are lots of tears when they leave.

I taught inner-city school for 20 years and often have told my daughter how important consistency is. This precious boy is pleading for attention the wrong way. The other two boys, ages 9 and 12, are not problematic kids.

My fear is the 13-yearold is not ready or mature enough to handle five weeks in Europe, and not disciplined enough to keep his cool. He is capable of a caper that may lead to his disappearance.

your daughter-in-law arrives, schedule a family meeting during which everyone’s household responsibilities will be discussed. If necessary, create a chart to keep track of them. If there are things she is able to do, assign them to her. If she’s clueless, then teach her. Do not overload her, and make sure she understands that you and your husband also have chores you will be doing.

Because she’s a picky eater, ask her to list what items she wants in the house so they are available. If she’s interested, offer to show her how to prepare some of the dishes your son has always enjoyed because it would be a nice surprise for him once he returns. And arrange regular monthly meetings, so that if adjustments need to be made, they can be done without hurt feelings or misunderstandings.

You are all adults. If you want this to work and are all willing to communicate and listen, you should be able to accomplish your goal without your daughter-in-law feeling like the maid.
