New commissioner appointed

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Downtown Plainfield resident Heather Kazmark has been appointed as the newest commissioner of the Plainfield Township Park District.

Kazmark was one of three candidates who were interviewed during closed session of a special board meeting Wednesday night.

Heather She was apKazmark pointed by the board to take over the term vacated by former Commissioner Janet Silosky, who resigned last month for personal reasons.

The board was unanimous, with commissioners Peter Steinys and Peter Hurtado absent.

“I’m really in shock,” said Kazmark, adding that she

has never been on an elected board. “I’ll be learning as much as I can and be ready to go for the July meeting.”

Kazmark is a 37-year-old single mother of three daughters who frequents the Ottawa Street Pool. She said she has worked as chief of staff for Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Aurora, and she is a precinct committeewoman for the Plainfield Township Democratic Organization.

The turmoil that engulfed the park district in the last two years is one of the reasons why Kazmark decided to apply for a board position.

“I was initially concerned about the way things have been going,” she said. “My interest was to get more involved in my community and move the board in the direction it needed to go.”

Silosky and Steinys won uncontested seats to the board in 2013. They formed a board ma-

jority with Hurtado, making several questionable decisions that led to public outrage.

The situation led to the passing of a state law last year that expanded the park district board from five to seven members. The two new two-year terms were selected by two state legislators.

Kazmark said she applied to be Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant’s pick last year and claimed to be selected as a top two candidate along with Commissioner Rob Ayres, who was eventually selected by Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, in October.

Goals

Kazmark said she wants to encourage more transparency and accountability in board decisions.

She’s also interested in being involved with the longterm planning process and capital improvements.

Dan Vera replaces James Smith as chairman of Rialto board

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – James Smith, the embattled chairman of the Rialto Square Theatre board during the marquee crisis, was replaced in an election of officers on Wednesday.

The new chairman is Dan Vera, who had been vice chairman and has been taking an increasingly bigger role on the board since the marquee issue started.

The marquee issue arose again Wednesday as the board agreed to update the existing sign at a cost of about $40,000.

The board made no decision on what to do with a new marquee that has cost the Rialto $197,000 but is sitting in pieces at the sign company since it was stopped in mid-production because of opposition to the design.

Smith made a statement saying he had decided not to

run for another term. He was in his second term and had served as chairman for three years.

The board recently adopted bylaws that called for another election before Smith completed the second year of his term.

Smith has been on the Rialto board since 1996 and will remain a member of the board.

“Boards need rotation,” Smith said. “It’s only healthy.”

Smith said he had no regrets about his time as chairman.

City Councilman Pat Mudron, the city’s liaison to the Rialto board, noted the marquee when thanking Smith at the meeting for his service as chairman. Smith replied, “I’m a firm believer in the old saying that adversity builds character. I have as much character as I need.”

Vera in a brief statement noted that “we begin with new leadership and a desire to work together and move forward.”

ed to officer positions are Cynthia Tyler, vice chairman, and David Thornton, secretary.

Vera led the effort to create the bylaws. He also cleaned up a backlog in Freedom of Information Act requests after taking over in April as the new FOIA officer. He served on a marquee committee that recommended the Rialto update its existing sign rather than moving forward with a new marquee that faced opposition.

Rialto General Manager Randy Green told the board that Landmark Sign Group has informed him that new electronics could be put into the existing marquee at a price of just under $40,000.

That price does not include repainting the face of the marquee and the vertical Rialto sign, replacing existing lights with LED lighting and laying conduit to connect a new message board with the computer that will control messages.

Other candidates that interviewed for the board position Wednesday night were Plainfield residents Michael Brann and Greg Eischen.

Brann is a former commissioner and board president.

Eischen, 53, works as a general manager and personal trainer at Hometown Fitness.

Board President Mary Kay Ludemann said all three candidates were very good.

“Any of them would have done a good job,” Ludemann said. “The way Heather answered the interview questions made her stand out.”

Coal City tornado most powerful to hit area since 1990 Plainfield twister More online

lleonecross@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A bathtub, bicycle and living room chair were just a few of the items lifted from destroyed homes in the Richards Crossing subdivision of Coal City, and dropped 50 to 100 yards south in an open field across the street.

Homeowners and their helpers tiptoed Wednesday through the bed of debris – equal parts mud and wood, sprinkled with nails and insulation – scattered across 20 acres of land, with a hope of salvaging anything at all.

Abbie Norris, 19, said she was just trying to find things she could keep. Her parents moved the family into their home eight years ago. Now, the two above-ground floors of the Norris home are a pile of rubble.

Packing 160-mile-per-hour winds, the tornado that struck Coal City about 10 p.m. Monday was the most powerful to hit the region since the August 1990 tornado in Plainfield, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday night’s EF3 tornado was on the ground for at least 16½ miles with a peak width of three-quarters of a mile, said Ed Fenelon of the weather service. The tornado swept through portions of Coal City, Carbon Hill and Braidwood before ending its path of destruction on Berta Road. Grundy County has been declared a state disaster area because of the destruction it left.

The 1990 Plainfield tornado ranked an EF5, the highest possible, and killed 29 people and injured more than 350 people.

No fatalities have been reported with the Coal City tornado, although five people were injured.

A sheriff's deputy checked on the family minutes later and help came. After they slipped their feet into random shoes laying nearby, they were lifted through a broken storm window by emergency helpers.

As of noon Wednesday, Norris said she, along with her mom, dad, two sisters, boyfriend and others, had recovered purses, wallets and her mother’s wedding dress. Almost all of the Norrises’ clothes are gone. She was wearing a friend’s clothes Wednesday and bought a pair of gym shoes.

Norris, a 2014 graduate of Coal City High School, said a planned summer vacation is up in the air, but she was cheerful Wednesday.

“It’s just how I deal with things,” Norris said. “We’re glad everyone is OK.” She and her father didn’t cry, but Norris said her two younger sisters did because

they were scared by the destruction. Norris said her mother cried when she saw the devastation as she looked back at the home from the street in the middle of the night.

Brad Overton, the Norrises’ next-door neighbor, had everything but his basement pulverized in a minute’s time.

As he sat in the basement before the tornado touched down with his wife and two sons, Overton heard a whis-

tling come through the vents.

The house began to shake above them. He grabbed everyone and huddled under the basement stairway before the house crashed to pieces.

“Then you just hear rain,” Overton said.

One of the first homes constructed in the subdivision, the Overton home is no longer a mainstay in Richards Crossing.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – On Jan. 2, Kent Bugg started sharing on a blog the story of his daughter Megan’s fight with Stage 4 cancer.

There is no way Bugg, superintendent of Coal City Community Unit School District 1, could have known that on day 172 of her journey, he would be writing about a tornado that would rip through the family’s home.

“It made her cry just looking at it,” he said of Megan’s first look at the damage as she, her mother and her sister came up from the basement after an EF3 tornado hit Coal City Monday night. “It’s hard to not to be able to come home to her sanctuary.”

Readers have come to know the Bugg family through the daily blog posts in a way most wouldn’t. They’ve read about Megan’s fight against alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, her stays in the hospital as she received numerous chemotherapy treatments, and as she battled illness caused by the medicines

given to save her life.

And they learned that throughout the difficult times and treatments, Megan found comfort in going home.

Bugg and his wife, Deb, spent Monday taking Megan, 13, from one appointment to the next as she received the first of 20 proton radiation treatments to the left side of her head and radiation treatment 11 of 28 on her left forearm.

They were thankful to be home and awaited the return of their oldest daughter, Kenzie, who had a volleyball match in Kankakee.

Bugg said Kenzie, 16, had returned from her match and soon the weather alerts started.

They took shelter in the bathroom in the basement to ride out the storm. Two minutes later, after pressure made their ears pop and furniture could be heard shifting above, it was suddenly silent again.

Bugg was optimistic as he went upstairs to check on the damage – until he reached the second story.

“Kenzie’s room was pretty bad. We lost the wall in both our bedroom and hers,” he

said. “The important thing is all of us are together, all four of us, no matter what.”

While the Bugg family echoed the sentiments of many of their neighbors, that things can be replaced, it didn’t help Kenzie when she saw the car she got just a week ago sitting damaged in front of their home.

Megan missed her treatment Tuesday, but her mother said she’d return to the doctor Wednesday and keep moving forward. The family is staying with friends while they wait for the builder to come survey the home.

On Tuesday, after friends spent the day helping them clean, Kenzie loaded the few clothes she saved from her room into her friend Nick Hayden’s car so she could wash the items.

Bugg said Hayden was one of the first to arrive Monday night to help, and was back at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to continue the work.

“They’ve all been here for me,” Hayden said of the Bugg family.

“I will always be there for them.”

“When stuff like this happens, [being from Coal City] sure comes in handy,” Overton said.

About 40 percent of the lots in the three- or fourblock Richards Crossing neighborhood are empty, having never reached capacity after the recession.

Damage assessments continue

Grundy County Emergency Management Agency officials continued Wednesday with damage assessment efforts. Late Wednesday night, officials issued a news release that said the current estimate of properties affected is 1,372. Earlier in the day, Coal City Police Sgt. Tom Logan has said early estimates were between 50 to 100 damaged.

Wednesday restored power to more than 95 percent of customers affected by the storm. Officials expected all remaining customers to have power restored by 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The initial stages of the debris management plan were in action, Logan said, and officials ask that residents place debris at the end of their lots, but not in the roadway. Public Works and other agencies will do pickups street by street.

Community Emergency Response Team volunteers were in the area, Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc said Wednesday. Mass numbers of volunteers are expected Friday, when, depending on the weather during the next couple days, the full volun-

teer effort is scheduled to begin.

Kernc said the Grundy County Community Organizations Active in Disaster will be based out of the Diamond Banquet Hall.

Calls and texts to Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday and Village Administrator Matt Fritz were not immediately returned Wednesday.

Kernc said both were working around the clock in the community.

Nine tornadoes

Monday night’s storms spawned at least nine tornadoes in the region, the National Weather Service said Wednesday, up from the weather service’s initial tally of four on Tuesday afternoon.

At least two tornadoes – including Coal City’s – touched down near the Will-Grundy line, while a third tornado – an EF2 – hit Lee County. A fourth touched down in Mendota, while a “high-end” EF2 with winds up to 130 miles per hour touched down in Sublette.

Other EF1 tornadoes touched down north of Ottawa, and in Mazon and Bourbonnais. An EF0 tornado hit Herscher. Two EF1 tornadoes touched down in Harmon.

It’s possible that more tornadic activity could be confirmed, according to NWS. Weather service officials urged people to take caution into Thursday, as another round of strong storms was forecast for late Wednesday, packed with quarter-sized hail and strong winds.

Flash flooding remains the biggest concern into Thursday morning, as the forecast predicted rain could fall in some areas at a rate of one to two inches per hour.

“Folks need to find a way to pay attention to the weather,” Fenelon said. “It’s shaping up to be a volatile situation.”

Joliet high school historian honored Dorothy Crombie gave Central High School national historic prominence

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Dorothy Crombie pursued the history of Joliet Central with the zeal of a proud alumna – even though she never graduated from the high school.

It was through her children, who did attend and graduate, that she became interested in learning more about the history behind the school for several decades. That passion led to her and others placing Joliet Central on the National Register of Historic Places.

“She probably took the term ‘parent involvement’ and redefined it,” said Anthony Contos, a former longtime educator with Joliet Township High School District 204.

Contos was with several other JTHS officials, friends and family of Dorothy Crombie on Wednesday to commemorate her works at Joliet Central High School, next to the Steelman statue. Crombie’s daughter, Janet, unveiled a plaque – which read “Dorothy Buck Crombie, 1921-2011, Activist Supreme” – for her mother, who died in 2011.

“Thank you all for coming today and the kind words about my mom and the recognition,” she said.

Crombie was an archive committee leader of the high school for more than 25 years, gathering materials and researching Central’s history. After briefly meeting in the early 1970s, Contos said he didn’t get to know her more until the threat of Joliet Central closing loomed and both sat on a citizens’ committee to advocate for the school.

“She discovered there was a lot of history that nobody ever knew anything about,” he said.

Crombie was “kind of a detective” who kept uncovering one piece of history after another, he said. When she got a lead, she would continue to pursue

She was proud of the high school, and was given an honorary graduate degree in 1986.

Contos said his favorite memory of Crombie was when she delivered a presentation on the high school that placed it on the National Register of Historic Places. Other people gave high-quality presentations that were voted down – but not hers.

“I couldn’t believe I heard [the school was accepted] and

we were all walking on air,” he said.

Tana Gray, the current archives committee president and former school board member, said she remembers Crombie would come to board meetings with a handout for each board member that would with hand-copied content in plastic sleeves. She said it was almost like a “mini scrapbook.”

“She’d keep us updated on what she was doing at the archives. She was a wonder. … I love her memorabilia, the way she assembled it. It was her

own unique style,” Gray said.

Contos said that people’s lives are made up of choices and actions that are like “rocks thrown into a pond,” and leave ripples.

Crombie’s ripples in the JTHS pond continue to travel, he said.

“Her legacy is woven right into this building,” he said.

MORRIS – Coal City is receiving help from volunteers from another town devastated by a tornado earlier this year.

Bill Nicklas and Phil Montgomery, DeKalb County Long Term Recovery Corporation president and vice president, drove more than 90 miles Wednesday from Fairdale to Morris carrying boxes of supplies for Coal City residents affected by the EF3 tornado that tore through town late Monday night.

The DeKalb County organization was established to meet the short- and long-term needs of families impacted by the tornado that struck Fairdale and rural DeKalb County on April 9.

“We felt at this point, we’re about 2½ months since our tornado came through, we’re continuing to meet the temporary needs as well as building for long-term needs. … We’re in a better position now to judge what we can spare,” Nicklas said.

Nicklas said he and Montgomery know what Coal City residents are going through and it was fortunate there was no loss of life, unlike in Fairdale. He said DeKalb County Long Term Recovery Corporation would be available for Coal City residents.

“We’re happy to meet with them and talk about how we organize,” he said.

6 men, 2 women join Joliet police force

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet police force gained eight new hires following a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday morning at the Joliet Police Department.

The new officers included two women as part of the department’s long-term efforts to diversify the force’s composition by recruiting highly qualified women and minorities in law enforcement, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said.

Six men were hired, some of whom have family members on the local police force and are carrying on the family tradition.

One of the women, Kristoff Petro, 25, of Plainfield said she feels honored to have been selected among a pool of more than 800 applicants. Heading into a career dominated mostly by men, Petro said she feels accomplished.

“It feels like an honor because I’m setting the stage for women who come after me,”

“Thanks for including these new officers in this year’s budget,” Benton told officials in the audience as the department, after years of being short staffed because of budget cutbacks, inches closer to the pre-recession number of 272 sworn officers.

Witness testifies in Joliet murder trial

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP – One dog perished Tuesday evening in a residential fire at the 2400 block of Emlong Street in Plainfield Township.

A man in his 20s and another dog made it out with no injuries, Plainfield Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Jon Stratton said.

Stratton said two Will County deputies in the area noticed the fire about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

They called in the fire and were able to get the sole occupant of the single-story home out of the back door, Stratton said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined as of Wednesday afternoon, and fire officials are waiting for insurance companies to look into it. But Stratton said investigators are looking at a couple of appliances in the rear bedroom as the possible cause.

The home was a total loss, except for a detached garage which was an explosion risk if firefighters hadn’t fought back the flames, Stratton said.

Stratton also noted that the occupant’s father was out running errands. But he returned when he saw smoke coming from the area near the home.

“He came back and it was their house that was on fire,” Stratton said.

JOLIET – The shot that went off as a gang member cleared his “jammed” pistol likely is the one that killed an innocent bystander four years ago outside the KO Zone Boxing Club, a witness testified Wednesday.

Christopher “Crisp Bills” Beale said he was standing next to Jevon Lesley after a party at the club broke up in the early hours of July 9, 2011, when Lesley pulled out a gray and black .380 Highpoint to shoot across Cass Street at rival gang members.

“Jevon Lesley pulled out a gun and cocked it back. He looked back at me and [two other companions] and asked, like, ‘Should I shoot?,’ ” Beale testified. “I heard somebody yell ‘Yeah’ and [Lesley] told [one of the companions] to get out of the way.

“Jevon tried to shoot and the gun didn’t work. He cocked it back, [it] went off then he started to shoot and aimed toward a [parked] van,” Beale said.

Prosecutors believe the first round went through the lung of Anthony Fearn, 18, who was walking to his own

vehicle parked around the corner on Arch Court. Lesley, 22, is charged with murdering Fearn, who had no gang involvement.

Beale said he’d been at and left the club earlier that night, but returned with Lesley and others when another member of the Vice Lord gang called to say he was expecting trouble with some Gangster Disciples.

Beale testified he didn’t see Lesley after the shooting because there were about 200 people running in the street but they did meet up later. Lesley allegedly told Beale he was thinking of fleeing the state and “didn’t know what to do with the gun.”

Under cross-examination from Will County Assistant Public Defender Steve Whitmore, Beale repeated that a live round fell to the ground when Lesley’s gun jammed. A police evidence technician testified Tuesday only spent shell casings were found where the shooter stood.

Former Joliet City Councilman Anthony Uremovic dies

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Former Joliet City Councilman Anthony Uremovic, who served 25 years before opting not to run for re-election in 2011, died Tuesday.

Uremovic, 65, also was head of the business department at Joliet Junior College, where he taught economics. He was first appointed to the council in 1986.

Uremovic suffered a heart attack in April and had been in a coma for three weeks before making a recovery.

“He was doing really well,” said his son, John. “It was a miracle. He came so far.”

John described his father as “the best guy you could ask for.

He would help anybody who needed it.”

Uremovic died at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in

Joliet.

Jim Ardaugh, a longtime friend of Uremovic, also described his apparent recovery from the heart attack as “a miracle.”

Ardaugh said he had visited Uremovic on Sunday.

“He was looking forward to a golf game before the end of the summer,” Ardaugh said.

“He felt that well on Sunday.”

Councilman Michael Turk, who served with Uremovic for 23 years, described him as having “a key insight into finances.”

“One of the nice things about Tony is you could be on the opposite side of a vote from him, and he never questioned your vote,” Turk said. “When it was over, it was over.”

JOLIET – The Canadian National Railway Company will be reconstructing the Ohio Street railroad crossing located between Scott and State streets in Joliet starting June 29 through July 3.

The road will be completely closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for the duration of

SHOREWOOD – Mayor Rick Chapman told dozens of residents at Tuesday’s village board meeting to continue protesting a gas station project for which official action has been tabled until July 14.

“Continue [wearing] your game paint,” he said to residents, lauding them for demonstrating their citizens’ rights.

Chapman was speaking to residents from the Hunt Club and other subdivisions who attended with signs that said “Say NO to Lenny’s Gas & Wash.”

The residents spoke out against the proposed Lenny’s Gas N Wash in the undeveloped Rose Shorewood Center at the southwest corner of River Road and Route 52.

They are concerned with safety and traffic issues, as well as the reputation of the developer.

“This is a good example of democracy in action,” Chapman said.

The project was on the village board meeting agen-

da Tuesday. But before any discussion started, Chapman said any vote would be delayed until the July 14 meeting.

Residents will be gathering more signatures from those who live in other areas of Shorewood to add to the more than 560 they solicited in the past month, Hunt Club resident Larry Jakaitis said.

“Nobody is objecting to putting something on that corner,” Jakaitis said. “People just do not want a 24/7 gas station on that corner, especially when it would also have a liquor license.”

While most residents who spoke Tuesday were against the project, some were for it.

Jim Haase, who lives in the Shorewood Glen neighborhood, said he is tired of seeing the corner vacant since he moved to the village nine years ago.

“I feel we should go ahead with this project,” Haase said.

“We need to start boosting our revenues.”

Contracts with the city unions are expiring next year, and O’Dekirk said he wants to negotiate a residency requirement back into the contracts.

“Unfortunately, a lot of our employees have left the city of Joliet,” O’Dekirk said.

He said the city would not likely be able to force those who have left to move back.

But he said the city should negotiate a residency requirement for future hires.

“If Joliet is good enough to work in and receive a paycheck from, the city is good enough to live in,” he said.

JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk in a speech Wednesday laid out plans for Joliet, including new economic development efforts, relief for truck congestion, a revitalized downtown and a return to the residency requirement for city employees.

O’Dekirk’s speech at a luncheon for the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry had some surprises, included plans for Joliet to eventually take over Arsenal Road, a major truck route now controlled by the county, and bringing back the residency requirement for city employees hired in the future.

O’Dekirk was elected in April and took office May 4.

The speech at Harrah’s Casino Joliet was one of his first in which he laid out plans for the city.

Noting that population trends could make Joliet, which is now the fourth largest city in Illinois, the third largest, the mayor said, “I think we need to start acting like the third biggest city.”

Pointing to room for economic growth in the far west and south ends of Joliet, O’Dekirk said the city needs to plan for future economic growth.

“I think the city of Joliet needs for the first time to develop an economic development plan,” he said. “There’s a lot of potential for that land.”

Minooka mayor disconcerted over local gas prices

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan voiced displeasure Tuesday over the high price of gas in the village.

Brennan said during the village board meeting he had been receiving emails from residents who are upset that Minooka gas prices are much higher than neighboring towns, sometimes by as much as 30 cents.

One resident Brennan spoke to said she purchases gas out of town and would rather support local businesses.

“I agree with these people,” Brennan said.

Brennan said Tuesday gas was 10 cents cheaper in Joliet

than in Minooka. Trustee Dick Parrish said it was 14 cents cheaper in Morris that day.

Brennan reached out to a local gas station for answers Wednesday, but was not able to reach anyone. He will try again Thursday, he said.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the first of what may be more employee reductions was approved. Trustees unanimously approved a voluntary separation agreement and release for one village employee in the Public Works Department as a result of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed reduction in local government’s share of state income tax.

Minooka already cut back on some programs, such as planting trees and repairing

sidewalks, Village Administrator Dan Duffy said. But since the state has not settled on a budget, local government could be looking at more revenue losses.

Whether or not more reductions in force are coming is yet to be seen, Duffy said.

“We are dependent on what the governor and Legislature approve,” he said. “The [village] board is taking a conservative approach to be ready for the unknown.”

IMET is in the process of going after the fraudulent fund, working with bankruptcy courts to liquidate the assets and recoup money, Duffy said.

In the meantime Minooka and other villages are pooling efforts to legally go after the company. The move also will save legal fees.

MARY E. HISCHIER Mary E. Hischier (nee Mahoney), age 61, of Shorewood, passed away Monday, June 22, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

Born June 4, 1954, in Joliet to Claire and Louise (nee Chasteen) Mahoney.

Mary was the Business Manager for 40 years for American Legion. An avid Chicago Cubs fan, she enjoyed life and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed lending a helping hand to all and will be truly missed by all.

Beloved wife of 23 years to Joseph J. Hischier; dear mother of Michael (Kristy) O’Connor, Patrick (Amanda) O’Connor and Richard (Vanina) O’Connor; loving grandmother of Khali, Claire, Jake, Annabelle, Vanessa and Michael O’Connor, Hailey Schaefer, Nathan Williams, Regan Williams and Sadie Johnson; fond sister of Daniel (Veronica) Mahoney, Kimberly (Bob) Lee and Patrick (Josephine) Mahoney; and dear aunt to many nieces and nephews.

LOS ANGELES – From the swelling-sea songs of “Titanic” to the space symphonies of “Apollo 13” to the bagpipes of “Braveheart,” James Horner’s singular sound graced some of the biggest moments in the history of movies.

It showed in the two Oscars he won and the 10 he was nominated for, and in the status of the Hollywood luminaries who were mourning his death in a California plane crash.

Agents Michael Gorfaine and Sam Schwartz issued a statement Tuesday saying Horner was the pilot killed in the single-engine plane that crashed in a remote area about 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles, although official confirmation could take several days while the Ventura County coroner works to identify the remains.

People who fueled the plane at an airport in Camarillo confirmed that it was Horner who had taken off in the aircraft Monday morning, said Horner’s attorney, Jay Cooper.

James Cameron, who directed “Titanic,” the 1997 best picture that earned Horner his two Oscars, used terms from another of his Horner collaborations, “Avatar,” to describe the composer’s work.

“James’ music was the air under the banshees’ wings, the ancient song of the forest,” Cameron said in a joint statement with producing partner Jon Landau. “James’ music affected the heart because his heart was so big, it infused every cue with deep emotional resonance, whether soaring in majesty through the floating mountains, or crying for the loss of nature’s innocence under bulldozer treads.”

Horner had a singular sound, but it found a home in a vast variety of movies

and other media, from 1980s synth-laden action flicks to dramatic Hollywood weepies to foreign-language indies.

He even composed the theme song for the “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.”

His Oscar wins for “Titanic” came for its score and theme song, “My Heart Will Go On,” sung by Celine Dion, which hit No. 1 around the world and become the best-selling single of 1998.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America included it among their “Songs of the Century” rankings.

“We will always remember his kindness and great talent that changed my career,” Dion said in a statement on her website.

Horner was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in all, honoring his work on “Aliens,” ‘’Apollo 13,” ‘’Field of Dreams,” “Braveheart,” “A Beautiful Mind,” “House of Sand and Fog” and “Avatar,” and for his original song, “Somewhere Out There,” from “An American Tail.”

Ron Howard, director of “Apollo 13” and “A Beautiful Mind,” said on Twitter that Horner was a “friend and collaborator” and “brilliant composer.”

“My heart aches for his loved ones,” Howard wrote.

A pianist since age 5, Horner studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the University of Southern California, eventually earning graduate degrees at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He got his start composing for movies by scoring shorts for the American Film Institute. His first commercial credits came from Roger Corman, who hired Horner to score several films in the 1980s, including “Humanoids from the Deep” and “Battle Beyond the Stars.”

Horner’s other collaborators included George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Oliver Stone.

Report: Illinois insurers lack clear info for women

CHICAGO – Most insurance plans offered in Illinois on the health overhaul law’s new marketplace meet the law’s requirements for women’s health, according to a report released Wednesday.

But user-friendly information was lacking, consumer materials were outdated and barriers such as log-in requirements made it impossible to compare birth-control options while shopping among competing health plans.

Information about abortion coverage “was exceptionally difficult” to find, the report noted, with some call center representatives seemingly guessing at what was covered or “whispering or giggling nervously” while providing information.

The report calls for insurance companies to do a better job explaining to women what they cover. Some insurers promised more training for call center workers in response to the findings.

“We found contraceptive coverage is pretty strong in Illinois,” report co-author Kathy Waligora said. “But when we looked at how easy it is to find out what’s actually covered, that was not as positive.”

Starved Rock visitors urged to take care after recent rains

UTICA – Officials are urging visitors at Starved Rock State Park to take care while hiking because recent storms have left trails wet and muddy.

The park in north-central Illinois and its hiking trails remain open, but flooding has limited parking.

State police said at some point Nelson pulled out a gun and fired it at the trooper. The trooper returned fire and the suspect fled on foot, running south or southeast from the scene. The trooper wasn’t injured.

Nelson was charged Wednesday with attempted first-degree murder and two weapons violations.

Kirk asks Navy to name warship after city of Quincy

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk wants the Navy to name a ship after Quincy, Illinois.

Kirk’s office said in a news release Tuesday that he sent a letter to Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus requesting the des-

ignation for its next frigate. Kirk said in the letter the Navy doesn’t have a USS Quincy in its inventory, and three previous ships with that name were meant to honor Quincy, Massachusetts.

According to Kirk’s office, this year marks the 175th anniversary of the Illinois city’s incorporation.

Kirk said naming a warship after the city would honor the service and support the community gives to the Navy.

Kirk’s office said the city had a Navy Reserve Training Center from the late 1940s until was destroyed in flooding in 1973.

Legislation restricting severance packages rejected by House

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House has rejected legislation that would cap the size of severance packages community

The Chicago Tribune reported the proposed law would have prohibited college boards from giving departing presidents more than one year’s salary and benefits. It also would have limited standard contracts to four years and required public notice and approval of any new, amended or renewed employment deals.

The legislation was prompted by a $763,000 severance package offered by the College of DuPage to end president Robert Breuder’s contract three years early.

The bill initially passed the House unanimously. However, it failed to get the necessary threefifths votes needed to approve a watered-down Senate version that passed last month.

Fans in Chicago turned out by the thousands to watch the games on large screens. And when it was over, the players were treated to a massive parade downtown, a trip to the White House to meet President Barack Obama and another trip to San Francisco to watch the World Series.

Then in February came the announcement that Little League International was stripping the team of its title, suspending its manager and suspending the team from Little League tournament play

until the local league replaced its president and treasurer after determining the boundaries of the league had been falsified so that ineligible players could be added to the roster.

Henderson, who was hired

by Jackie Robinson West to conduct an investigation, said his efforts have been stonewalled by Little League International.

“I can’t tell you if Little League International looked at all the paperwork and all the paperwork of other teams ... because they haven’t talked

to me,” he said. “We contacted Little League and said if there’s information on these children, on these parents, you’ve received, please share it with us. The answer was no.”

Henderson said he did speak briefly with a Little League attorney but never was given any information of substance.

Disabled Illinois athletes can compete in swimming, track The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Disabled prep student athletes will be given full opportunities to compete in certain sports under a settlement with the Illinois High School Association that Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced Wednesday.

The settlement allows disabled student athletes to compete and earn points toward a team state championship in swimming, diving and track and field. It resolves a lawsuit brought in 2012 by Mary Kate Callahan, a former disabled swimmer at Fenwick High School in Oak Park.

The IHSA oversees high school sports in Illinois. IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman issued a statement saying “this agreement with the attorney general formalizes the direction the association has been moving in for several years.”

Madigan’s lawsuit charged the IHSA with violating federal laws affecting disabled people.

Under the settlement, the IHSA must maintain records for disabled student athletes as it does for all other student athletes. It also must adopt a revised accommodations policy for student athletes with disabilities and provide a trained Americans with Disabilities

CHICAGO – A former Chicago Little League team announced a lawsuit Wednesday against the sport’s governing body, accusing it of improperly stripping the young athletes of the national title that made them hometown heroes and nationally known and refusing to provide the information used to make the stunning decision.

The attorney for Jackie Robinson West said during a news conference he believed some of what Little League International has claimed – some of the players did not live within local league boundaries.

But he added he thought the team was unfairly singled out for scrutiny, in part, because all of its players are black.

“Do I think race is at play?

Yes, I do think that it’s at play at some level,” said Victor Henderson, as members of the team and their parents and coaches sat and stood behind him. “Do I think that’s the only reason? No, I do not.”

The lawsuit is the latest chapter of what started as an uplifting and inspirational story about the South Side Chicago team and how it defeated opponent after opponent, including Las Vegas to capture the national crown at the Little League World Series. Little League officials said in an email Wednesday that the eligibility verification process takes place before the start of each level of play in the Little League International Tournament, not each game.

The team announced in April that it would switch leagues and play for the Babe Ruth League’s Cal Ripken division.

“I am sorry for the lives that I’ve taken, for the suffering that I’ve caused you, for the damage that I’ve done – irreparable damage,” the 21-year-old former college student, speaking haltingly in his Russian accent, said after rising to his feet in the hushed federal courtroom.

After Tsarnaev said his piece, U.S. District Judge George O’Toole Jr. quoted Shakespeare’s line “The evil that men do lives after them.

The outcome of the proceedings never was in doubt.

The judge was required under law to impose the jury’s death sentence for the April 15, 2013, attack that authorities said was retaliation for U.S. wars in Muslim lands.

The only real suspense was whether Tsarnaev would say anything when offered the chance to speak. And if so, would he show remorse?

Or would he make a political statement and seek to justify the attack?

During his trial, he showed a trace of emotion only once, when he cried while his aunt was on the stand. And the only evidence of any remorse came from Sister Helen Prejean, the “Dead Man Walking” death penalty opponent, who quoted him as saying of

the victims: “No one deserves to suffer like they did.”

His apology was a five-minute address peppered with religious references and praise of Allah. He asked that Allah have mercy upon him and his dead brother and partner in crime, Tamerlan, but he made no mention of the motive for the bombing.

He paused several times as if struggling to maintain his composure. He faced the judge while speaking but addressed himself to the victims.

Tsarnaev admitted he carried out the bombing – “If there’s any lingering doubt about that, let there be no more” – and added: “I did do it along with my brother.”

Outside court, some bombing survivors said they doubted Tsarnaev’s sincerity.

“It really does not change anything for me,” Scott Weisberg said.

But another survivor, Henry Borgard, said: “I was actually really happy that he made the statement. I have forgiven him. I have come to a place of peace and I genuinely hope that he does as well.”

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said Tsarnaev left important things unsaid: “He didn’t renounce terrorism.

He didn’t renounce violent extremism.”

Tsarnaev probably will be sent to the death row unit at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, where Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was executed.

It could take years or even decades for his appeals to work their way through the courts.

In May, the jury condemned the former college student to die for joining his older brother in setting off the two pressure-cooker bombs near the finish line and in killing an MIT police officer as they fled. Tamerlan, 26, was killed during the getaway.

NATO approves military upgrades to aid members

By JOHN-THOR DAHLBURG The Associated Press BRUSSELS – Rejecting charges of engaging in a Cold War-style arms race with Russia, the U.S. and its NATO allies approved military upgrades Wednesday that should help them come to the aid of a threatened alliance member faster, with better equipment and more firepower.

“We stand united in the way we are addressing the challenges we face,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said.

Meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter and counterparts from Canada and NATO’s European member nations ordered an increase in the strength of the alliance’s Response Force, which was

They also added air, sea and special forces units to the force, which includes a highly mobile, multinational “spearhead” brigade of 5,000 ground troops the ministers ordered to be formed in February so NATO can reinforce any alliance member under threat within 48 hours.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – State senator and pastor Clementa Pinckney was carried Wednesday into the Statehouse where he served the people for nearly 20 years, becoming the first African-American since Reconstruction to rest in honor in the South Carolina Rotunda.

Hours later, his congregation returned to the scene of a massacre, keeping up his work of saving souls.

To show their faith and restore their sanctuary, about 150 people packed into the basement of Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Church where Pinckney and eight parishioners were shot exactly one week before.

“We decided to come together rather than pull apart,” interim pastor Norvel Goff told the multiracial gathering of people who sat in neat rows of folding chairs Wednesday evening.

“It’s our choice. It’s our choice not to raise hell and tear up the city or tear up the

streets because something tragic happened,” Goff said.

Among those attending the session were several family members of shooting victim Myra Thompson.

“It is a powerful testimony that they are able to come,” Goff said of Thompson’s relatives, who were applauded by others in the audience.

The killings appear to be creating waves of soul-searching that are reverberating far beyond the historical black church and the state Capitol where Pinckney’s widow and two young daughters met his horse-drawn carriage, evoking memories of black and white images of other slain civil rights figures five decades earlier.

Uremovic had a doctorate in public policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In addition to his son John, Uremovic is survived by his wife, Mary, and another son, John.

Patrick Sawyer, 24, also was wearing shackles when he testified, but was substantially less cooperative. Sawyer was taken into custody in Wisconsin earlier this week after

Sawyer told Will County Assistant State’s Attorney John Connor he is a former Gangster Disciple who got into an altercation with Beale inside the boxing club.

“When the party was shut down [and everyone went outside], did you see ‘Guru’ holding a gun?” Connor asked the witness.

“I’m not sure about that anymore,” Sawyer answered.

“It all happened very fast.”

But jurors were then shown a video of Sawyer’s interview with Joliet Det. Shawn Filipiak in August 2011 where he claims he saw Lesley shooting as he ran.

“I never wanted to testify,” Sawyer said Wednesday.

The trial is scheduled to continue Thursday.

Pope gets involved in discussions on ecology What business does the pope have getting involved in politics and science? That’s a question that has come up in recent days surrounding the release of Pope Francis’ much-anticipated encyclical, or letter, on ecology. “Laudato Si” presents a comprehensive vision of creation and our responsibilities toward it.

“The Church has the duty of scrutinizing the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel,” is what a document from the Second Vatican Council said about just this kind of thing.

“In ‘Laudato Si,’ Pope Francis is applying the teachings of the church to one of the most important and also meaningful controversies of our time,” said Matthew Bunson, senior correspondent for Our Sunday Visitor and editor of The Catholic Almanac.

That might just get us to the bigger picture – about life, death, the family and the common good in “Laudato Si” – that many headlines and analyses have missed.

Tigers add former Lockport coach Thompson to coaching staff

By JEFF De GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Having youth and experience is a part of any athletic team, but having youth with experience is an exception.

The Joliet West boys basketball team will have that young look with experience next season.

At times during the 2014-15 season, the Tigers had all underclassmen on the floor, and they finished with an 1116 record. With the addition of some talented members of the sophomore and freshman teams, the Tigers look to build upon what they started last year.

“We have a great group of returning, experienced, young players on this team,” coach Nick DiForti said Wednesday at the 30th annual Morris Shootout.

“Now we get to add in more underclassmen, which will help, not only this coming season, but in the future.

This summer has been good for those kids. It gets the varsity jitters out of the way early. We have been playing well as a group. They are all learning to play with each other, and they are like sponges in the ability to take in and process all the information.”

Along with the youthful experience, DiForti said the West basketball program made the biggest free-agent signing in Will County. Former Lockport coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. has joined the Tiger coaching staff.

“Anytime you can get a coach with the knowledge and experience that Larry has is a big plus for your program,” DiForti said. “He will help on all levels of this program, and we are extremely happy to have him.

The Tigers opened the Morris event in pool play Wednesday with a 57-39 victory over Galesburg, lost to Stevenson, 59-53, and came back to beat Morris, 64-35.

One of the team’s veterans is junior Trevian Bell, an All-Southwest Suburban Blue selection as a sophomore.

“This summer has been really good.

We have progressed well as a team,” said Bell, who averaged 10 points and seven rebounds last season.

“We are really young, but we have that experience that you need. It will be fun to keep this group together for a few more years. I’m really working on my ball handling and shooting, because I will play more on the wing this year. I will do whatever it takes to help our team win.”

“This is a great group of guys on this team,” he said. “The chemistry is really coming together. I’m working on distributing the ball to my teammates, creating shots when the opportunity arises and playing really good defense, because that can only help the offense.

We made a lot of progress last year and want to be even better this year.”

Eddie Creal, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, is learning what it takes to play at the varsity level after competing for the Tigers’ freshman team last season.

“It’s so much of a faster-paced game,” he said. “That is a huge difference that I am learning in the summer.

You play as a team on the varsity. You share the ball. It’s not a bunch of oneon-one stuff. This has been a great learning experience for me.”

This will be the last season for West in the SouthWest Suburban Blue, as the Tigers and Joliet Central will join the Southwest Prairie Conference in the 2016-17 school year.

“I really think our conference will be much more balanced this year from top to bottom,” DiForti said. “This summer has shown our players that playing together and having that cohesiveness is so important. They have done a good job in preparation for the upcoming school year.”

By DICK GOSS JOLIET – List Alando Tucker’s noteworthy accomplishments in the basketball arena, and you understand why the 2002 Lockport graduate ranks among the best players in this area’s history.

Big Ten Player of the Year his final season (2006-07) at Wisconsin? Check.

Two-time All-Big Ten first team, including a unanimous selection as a senior? Check.

Broke Michael Finley’s career scoring record and Devin Harris’ season scoring record for the Badgers? Check.

Drafted by Phoenix Suns 29th overall in the 2007 NBA draft? Check.

Several stints with the Suns and bigtime numbers with the Suns’ affiliate, the Albuquerque Thunderbirds, in the NBA Development League? Check.

Played in Puerto Rico, Russia, Spain, Slovakia and Bulgaria before joining the French club SOMB Boulogne-sur-Mer and leading his league in scoring in the recently concluded season? Check.

But what Tucker has been doing recently, and is so important to him, does not involve his personal game. He is the founder and CEO of Arcitec Basketball, a company of basketball professionals based in this area whose stated mission is to design and oversee the construction of the complete basketball player.

Jeremy Krieger, a former player at Joliet Central and University of St. Francis and an assistant for Samantha Quigley with the USF women’s team, is on board as the associate skills and development instructor. He adds the elements Tucker needed in the organization “Jeremy and I have been friends a long time,” Tucker said. “I knew his business sense, his background and his character. He was able to take on a role where he was able to carry this while I’m playing. We’ll bring in others, too, guys with a high IQ for basketball who played somewhere on the college level, at least.”

LOCAL CAMPS

Arcitec’s objective is to provide athletes of all ages with the highest quality sports and life skills training through engineered and detailed professional instruction.

“We emphasize individual skill, fundamental development, education, character building and team play, all within a positive coaching environment,” the Arcitec website states. “Our services include but are not limited to summer camps and clinics, workshops and private individual lessons with no age restrictions. We train clients that

live in the United States but also host camps, clinics and workshops internationally.”

Local kids will have an opportunity to experience Arcitec during next week’s camp at Lockport East. It runs from Monday through Thursday and is for boys grades five through 12.

That will be followed by a co-ed camp for all ages July 10 to 12 at the University of St. Francis. To register for either camp or for information, visit arcitecbasketball.com.

“We are trying to be what the high school coach can’t be in the summer,” Krieger said. “We want to provide actual instruction when the season is not going on.”

“When I was growing up, nobody provided me with the knowledge of the game that I am able to bring,” Tucker said. “Kids learn the fundamentals of basketball with us.”

Tucker said the company’s first international event was May 23 in London.

“Jeremy flew out for it,” he said. “He was able to visit Paris and northern France, too. We want to have that camp every year.

“Basketball in London is growing.

We want to be a company that goes in there and grows with the population.

We plan to be global – Canada, Paris, Croatia, Africa, everywhere.”

Yet home remains all-important.

“We have the camps coming up at Lockport and here at the university,” Tucker said. “Lockport is a fourday event with elite training for three hours a day. We give pro training to high school players and young kids.

“We wanted to start at home, K through the professional level. We have been training [Lockport graduate] Karrington Ward, who is getting ready for the NBA Draft.”

GETTING RECOGNIZED

Krieger said the biggest hurdle in getting Arcitec off the ground is “the marketing it takes. It needs to be understood that we are someone that wants to provide a service.

“We have been networking. A lot of people I talk to don’t know that Alando comes back here when he isn’t playing overseas. He offers international training, and I offer it locally.”

“It was hard to get started because I am overseas for six months,” Tucker said. “We had to go through the process

of building a website. Jeremy has been our guy on the ground. I’m trying to be active in the community whenever I can be.”

Krieger said Joliet West coach Nick DiForti and Joliet Central coach Jeff Corcoran are helping spread the word on what Arcitec offers. It helps, but getting the business established in the community will take time.

“No. 1 is you have to have a passion for doing this,” Krieger said. “No. 2, yes, you want to make some money.

We understand the first few years we might lose money. But if you look at the southwest suburban area, there is a lot of baseball, softball and golf instruction, but not a lot of 1-on-1 basketball training. We want to provide that service.”

The end result should interest upand-coming basketball players.

“Kids I talk to want to go to college, but they don’t understand the investment,” Krieger said. “I tell them, ‘You are investing time with me because you will use basketball to pay for college.’

That’s how I see it.”

“You learn a discipline with us to invest in your own self,” Tucker said.

Tucker’s and Krieger’s careers demonstrate they understood the investment. Their hope is their home area will allow them to share that knowledge.

rian Grant could be a possibility if he’s still on the board. He would bring athleticism and a polished game, he shares a college alma mater with team executive John Paxson and has a family tie to the organization.

Uncle Horace and Paxson were part of the first Bulls’ championship three-peat in the 1990s, and dad Harvey played in the NBA. Duke’s Tyus Jones, Utah’s Delon Wright and Louisville’s Terry Rozier also might be possibilities at point guard. If the Bulls go for a shooting guard, UNLV’s Rashad Vaughn could be their choice. His lone season got cut short by a torn meniscus in his left knee. But he is a strong shooter, and the Bulls could use some help on the perimeter with Mike Dunleavy Jr. set to hit free agency.

Going big might make sense for the Bulls, too. After all, Pau Gasol turns 35 next month, and he can’t be expected to play 78 games again. Taj Gibson just had ankle surgery. Joakim Noah needs to show his left knee is healthy after he was limited last season.

As for Rose, the former MVP is owed $41.3 million over the final two years of his contract, and questions still linger about just how good he can be.

At his best, he was one of the top players in the NBA – an explosive, fearless, 6-foot-3 blur who rocketed from Rookie of the Year to All-Star to MVP in his first three seasons after being taken with the No. 1 pick by his hometown team in 2008.

All that came crashing to a halt in Year 4, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the 2012 playoff opener. He missed a season and had his first comeback limited to 10 games by a torn meniscus in his right knee.

This past season was a mixed bag.

Rose flashed that old explosiveness at times, hung on the perimeter at others and ultimately left the big questions unanswered.

Rose played in just 51 games and was third on the team in scoring at 17.7 points. His fieldgoal percentage (.405) was the worst of his career, not counting the 35.4 percent he shot over the 10 games he played in during the 2013-14 season.

Sale gets 10 strikeouts, but loses to Twins for third time

By DAVE CAMPBELL The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS – Phil Hughes and the Minnesota Twins were undeterred by Chris Sale’s strikeout streak for the White Sox. Why would they be, with all due respect to the lanky lefthander? Sale has become one of baseball’s best pitchers, but not against the Twins this year.

Hughes pitched eight strong innings on his 29th birthday Wednesday, and Minnesota beat Sale for the third time this season, overcoming 10 more strikeouts by the threetime All-Star in a 6-1 victory.

“He’s definitely pitched very well against us a lot of times, so it’s hard to say you have his number – but this year obviously we’ve had some success,” said Kurt Su-

zuki, who had two hits and an RBI for the Twins.

Sale (6-4) reached double digits in strikeouts for the seventh straight game, the longest stretch since Randy Johnson in 2001. Sale was trying to become the first pitcher in modern major league history with at least 12 strikeouts in six consecutive starts.

His streak of innings with at least one strikeout was stopped at 38 when the Twins hit three doubles in a threerun fourth to give Hughes (6-6) the lead for good.

“I appreciate it, and it’s cool, but it’d be a lot better if we were winning more games, for sure,” Sale said after the Sox fell to an AL-worst 13-25 on the road.

a way,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said. “He’s one of those guys that, he’s going to make you look bad from time to time, but you’ve got to look at each at-bat and each inning as a new opportunity.”

Adam LaRoche, who had three hits, homered to start the second, but Hughes settled in smoothly to win with eight innings and one run allowed for

the second straight time. He gave up six hits and struck out five without a walk, lowering his ERA to 4.20.

Brian Dozier and Shane Robinson had two hits for the Twins, who are 9-4 against the Sox this year while outscoring them, 78-35.

“If you feel like you give up more than two you’re going to get beat, it’s tough to pitch like that,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “We’ve got a lot of room for improvement on offense.”

Sale’s strikeout/innings streak was the longest since Johan Santana struck out at least one batter over 39 straight innings in 2002 for the Twins. Only Pedro Martinez (1999) and Johnson (1998) had whiffed at least 12 over five straight starts since 1914, according to STATS research.

Providence graduate Sam Travis continued his hot hitting Tuesday night in the Single A-Advanced All-Star Game that pitted the Carolina League against the California League.

Travis, who plays for the Boston Red Sox’s affiliate at Salem, played first base the entire game for the Carolina League; and although his team lost, 9-2, he went 2 for 4. The two singles included a first-inning shot off the leg of California League starting pitcher Zack Godley, who left immediately for precautionary reasons.

Meanwhile, Travis is hitting .313 with 15 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 40 RBIs. He entered the all-star break on a 13-for-34 streak (.382).

Organizations treat their prize recruits differently as far as how quickly they move them along, and whether they prefer to keep them on the same level an entire season rather than moving them up in midseason. But Travis certainly is a candidate to advance to Double-A in the not-too-distant future.

Slammers top Schaumburg SUBMITTED REPORT SCHAUMBURG – The top of the order led the way for the Joliet Slammers as they beat the Schaumburg Boomers, 5-3, Wednesday night.

The Boomers (15-20) scored first in the first inning against Slammers starter pitcher Andrew Strenge but Joliet (14-21) evened the game in the second. Russell Moldenhauer walked and Casey Fletcher was hit by a pitch.

With one out catcher Jack Cleary cracked an RBI single to drive in Moldenhauer, tying the game at 1-1.

The Boomers went back ahead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second, but the Slammers

scored twice in the third to lead, 3-2. JD Williams walked and Charlie White singled.

They worked a double steal and Mike Garza singled both home.

The Boomers tied the game in the fourth before Joliet regained the lead, 4-3, in the fifth.

With runners at the corners, Garza grounded into a double play as White scored.

The Slammers added another run in the sixth on Max Casper’s squeeze bunt.

That was all the Slammers would need as Strenge combined with Sam Moore and Navery to shut down the Boomers over the final five innings.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Justin Turner and Adrian Gonzalez homered, and the Los Angeles Dodgers snapped the Cubs’ four-game win streak with a 5-2 victory Wednesday night.

Gonzalez connected for a leadoff drive in the second and Turner belted a three-run shot in the third, helping Los Angeles bounce back after it scored just two runs in the first two games of the fourgame series. Joc Pederson added an RBI single in the eighth for the NL West leaders, who had lost four of five overall.

J.P. Howell (3-1) replaced Mike Bolsinger with two out in the fifth and pitched 1 1⁄ 3 scoreless innings for the win.

Kenley Jansen got three outs for his 10th save in 11 chances.

Joliet pastor in his 80s continues preaching and reaching out

By KEVIN BEESE Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Sixty-eight years after preaching his first sermon, David Downey still is sharing the Gospel with anyone who will listen.

Downey said he has preached in Joliet churches and on the shores of Lake Michigan – and everywhere in between. He went door to door to reach out to people in Joliet neighborhoods in need of religion. He has played a role in establishing area churches, including Paxton Avenue Christian and Forest Park.

Although officially retired, Downey continues to preach and at age 84 is beginning services at the senior living facility Timbers of Shorewood, at the request of his 88-year-old brother who lives there.

Downey even had his first sermon ready.

“I will be preaching on, ‘Life begins at 80,’ ” Downey said, noting Moses was that age when he encountered God in the burning bush.

Ministry style

Downey, who is white, was honored recently at First Christian Church in Joliet for his 58-year ministry with New Testament Negro Evangelism.

People who know Downey said he will continue helping predominantly black churches.

“He’s not retired from nothing,” said David L. Harris, senior minister of Joliet’s Paxton Avenue Christian Church. “There was a rally at Wildwood [Church of Christ in Gary, Indiana], and he was there.”

Harris, who views Downey as a mentor and close friend, said the Joliet native is not one to see color. What Downey sees, Harris added, is people who need Jesus.

Downey, who describes himself as a “country boy,” was born and raised in Joliet.

He remembers delivering The Herald-News as a boy, riding his bike six miles a day to complete his rural route. He gave his first sermon at age 16 at the MorningStar Mission in Joliet.

Downey was in college at 17 and married to the love of his life, Ruth, at 18. He got the blessing of Ruth’s family by promising not to have kids until the spring of his senior year of college.

MOKENA – One Love Global Wellness Foundation provided meals June 11 to about 125 local families in need through its Mission Meals program.

This deal has a split personality. If there is one particular split, declarer adopts line A; but if there is a different split, he follows line B. What are those splits and lines?

Take several split seconds.

South is in four hearts. West cashes his three top diamonds, then shifts to the club 10, which is won by declarer’s ace.

In the auction, North might have rebid three no-trump despite knowing about the 5-3 heart fit.

Here, though, hearts are 3-2. Declarer now plays a spade to his king, returns a spade to dummy’s ace, ruffs a spade high in his hand, leads a heart to dummy’s king, cashes the spade queen and spade six, discarding his low clubs, and claims.

mer’s disease takes hold, levels of one neurotransmitter, called acetylcholine, drop sharply. Without enough acetylcholine, different areas of the brain cannot communicate normally with one another.

We also knew that there were two unusual microscopic structures in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s, called plaques and tangles. We knew that plaques contained a chemical called amyloid beta, and that tangles contained a chemical called tau. (I’ve put an illustration showing the plaques and tangles of Alzheimer’s disease on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Finally, we knew that areas of the brain with lots of plaques and tangles were most likely to have dead neurons. In advanced Alzheimer’s, the loss of neurons is so dramatic that the brain actually shrinks.

So there was circumstantial evidence, but no proof, that amyloid beta and tau might be important causes of the death of neurons.

In the past 25 years, scientists have obtained strong evidence that amyloid beta and tau really are important causes of the death of brain cells. And scientists have discovered several other brain molecules that are also important. I predict you’ll be hearing more about apolipoprotein e4 (ApoE4) and a gene regulator called REST (you don’t want to know the full scientific name).

If these molecules are all important in causing Alzheimer’s disease, then targeting them with new drugs may someday prevent and even reverse the disease.

Dear Dr. K: My grandmother has Alzheimer’s disease. Over the past few years I have watched the disease take a toll on her judgment, memory, even her personality. How does Alzheimer’s wreak so much havoc in the brain?

Dear Reader: In the past 25 years, medical science has learned a great deal about what causes Alzheimer’s disease. Before that, we basically knew just that the brains of people with this disease, viewed with a microscope, had some unusual features. We knew that the disease caused brain cells to die prematurely, but we didn’t know why. Today, I think we are closing in on understanding some major causes (if not all of the causes) of brain cell death.

Early on, Alzheimer’s disease affects the brain’s limbic system and cerebral neocortex. The limbic system is central to memory and learning. It also links emotions and behavior. It is the line between what we want to do and what we actually do. The cerebral neocortex controls conscious thought. Damage to this area leads to problems with language, math and reasoning.

Ongoing communication between the limbic system and neocortex links thinking and emotions. The back-and-forth between memory and emotion, thought and action, is the foundation of personality. That’s why damage to these two areas is so devastating.

Other parts of the brain are not affected until later in the disease. Examples include the brainstem and cerebellum, which control basic functions needed for survival. When these brain areas are affected, swallowing, walking and coordination become impaired.

Twenty-five years ago, we knew that the brain cells that do the thinking -- neurons -- communicate with one another using chemicals called neurotransmitters. As Alzhei-

Dear Abby: One of my friends who I work with is getting married this summer.

She recently asked me for my address and, since we also went to school together, asked me to give her a few other friends’ addresses as well. So imagine my surprise when my friends all received invitations to her wedding in the mail and I did not.

I think it’s possible that my invitation legitimately was lost in the mail or it may have been an honest oversight. However, I realize it’s also possible that she wants to keep her wedding small and decided against inviting me.

How do I politely ask if I’m invited to her wedding? I’ve tried bringing up the subject in conversation at work, but I’m afraid it would be rude to directly ask if I’m still invited.

I consider her a good friend and get along great with her fiance, so I’m thinking it was an honest mistake. – Tired of

Because you consider her a good friend, ask whether your wedding invitation could have been lost in the mail because it’s possible it may have been. Dear Abby: I’m almost 20. I have a well-paying job and live with my mother in a small town. My issue is I don’t know how to break away from her.

My older siblings still live here, too. They don’t help pay rent, utilities, groceries or anything. Mom and I pay for everything in a house of six people. My boyfriend and I have discussed living together, but I don’t know how I will ever be able to leave. No one else helps Mom, and I don’t want her to lose the house.

I know the solution is “everyone will have to pay their way.” But they don’t, and Mom won’t enforce it.

I want to help her because she’s my mother, but I have my own life and I can’t stay here forever.

How should I approach this with her? I don’t want there to be bad feelings. I don’t know if I’m selfish wanting to move in with my boyfriend, but I want a life of my own. – Stuck in the West Dear Stuck: If your mother can’t keep her house on her own, there are serious problems ahead for her. If she doesn’t have the income to afford it, she may have to find a job or sell it.

It should not be your responsibility to support the family. Your siblings aren’t contributing to the household because your mother has been enabling them to avoid it.

Have a private conversation with her. Tell her you plan to move out, so you are giving her plenty of notice and a departure date.

I caution you, however, against moving in with your boyfriend if it’s because of a desire to escape this unfair situation. It would be better for you to be economically independent and have experienced living on your own before moving in with
