PLAINFIELD – An assistant principal and two teachers are being promoted to leadership positions at three Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 elementary schools starting the 201415 school year, according to a news release.

Creekside Elementary School Assistant Principal Patti Connell will become the Patti principal, replacing Kevin Connell

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Lifelong resident Leonard Thompson plans to challenge incumbent Terry Morris for the District 5 seat on the Joliet City Council.

“I’ve been living in District 5 all of my life and it’s still all the same [problems],” said Thompson, 50, of 224 Rowell Ave. “It’s all stagnant. It’s time for a change.”

Thompson joins a growing list of candidates announcing they intend to run in the April 2015 city Leonard election. Others include CounThompson cilman Robert O’Dekirk and Andrew Mihelich, who are challenging Mayor Tom Giarrante, and businessman Patrick Mudron, who is campaigning for O’Dekirk’s District 2 seat.

Thompson cited the need for business development, as well as health centers, transportation services and assistance for senior citizens, as the district’s primary needs.

Thompson said he supports Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante “110 percent” for his efforts to bring business into the city.

Morris responded that it wasn’t necessary to be a native of the district to understand its needs. Morris faced four opponents when he won the seat in April 2011.

“We’ll see what happens as we get closer to the election,” he said.

District 5 includes neighborhoods mostly south of Jefferson Street on both sides of the Des Plaines River. About 29,000 residents live in the district.

Thompson has campaigned for other offices in the past. He ran against incumbent Larry Walsh for the Will County Executive seat in the 2012 Democratic primary. He also ran against several candidates in the 2008 Democratic primary

for Will County District 8.

While he failed to win either election, Thompson said he gained valuable experience from both races.

“A lot I learned was about going out into the community and writing down the things that people want,” Thompson said.

Thompson said is supportive of a plan by Concerned Citizens of Joliet to re-district Joliet into eight districts instead of the current five.

“When you look at the city council now, it has two African-Americans and no Hispanics,” Thompson said. “Joliet is a melting pot of nationalities.”

He noted the same frustrations in the district are shared by blacks, whites and Hispanics.

Thompson, who has a degree in criminal justice, is a former social coordinator for the Housing Authority of Joliet and a former correctional counselor for the Illinois Youth Center-Joliet.

Thompson said he was inspired to run for office by his father, Leonard Thompson Sr., who was one of the first African-Americans on the Joliet Fire Department, and by his uncle Billy Boy Thompson, an amateur heavyweight boxer who was a state and Golden Gloves champion during the 1960s and ’70s.

Peterson will fill the position left by Dana Karczewski, who became Liberty’s principal in the spring. Coberley will replace Kim Rutan, who accepted a position at another district.

Community pays tribute to Mokena’s Aaron Toppen

Army Pfc. Aaron Toppen did not.

That’s how the fallen soldier was described Tuesday at his funeral by U.S. Army Maj. General Jeffrey Snow. Toppen, 19, from Mokena, was killed earlier this month in Afghanistan.

“Did Aaron know fear? Of course he did.

We all do. But he did not wear it,” Snow said.

Snow said Pfc. Aaron Toppen – who joined the U.S. Toppen Army just two Mokena months shy of graduating from Lincoln-Way East High School in 2013 – represents “the best of men and women who serve, who answer our nation’s call.”

Hundreds attended the young man’s funeral at Parkview Christian Church in Orland Park. Thousands of others lined the route of the funeral procession as Toppen was taken to St. John’s Cemetery in Mokena.

Toppen was among five American troops who died June 9 in southern Afghanistan from an air strike in one of the deadliest friendly-fire incidents in the war’s history.

Military officials believe the air strike was called in after the Taliban ambushed Toppen’s unit.

The teen knew from an early age he wanted to be in the Army, Senior Pastor Tim Harlow said to Toppen’s family and friends at the funeral service.

“There was a patriotism born deep in his soul from his earliest days,” he said.

Outside the church, Dustin Cammack, spokesman for the Illinois National Guard, said several retired and current military personnel attended the funeral to honor Toppen for his service.

“In the military, we’re a brotherhood, and when one of our own falls, we give them the respect that they deserve,” Cammack said.

bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The First Lady of Drag Racing will help launch this weekend’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals in downtown Joliet on Thursday night.

Shirley Muldowney, winner of three NHRA Top Fuel championships, will be one of the featured celebrities at Nitro Nite, slated for 5 to 10 p.m. on Chicago Street. She also will serve as grand marshal for the races.

Other NHRA celebrities appearing will include Pro Stock drivers Jeg Coughlin Jr., Erica Enders-Stevens and Allen Johnson, Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Steven Johnson and John Force Racing crew chief Jimmy Prock. “[Muldowney] did it way back before anyone thought of drag racing and lady drivers,” said Mike Guglielmucci, event organizer. “She came up the hard way. She definitely earned everything she got and then some. Whatever it took to go fast, she did it.”

Drivers will answer questions and sign autographs.

Nitro Nite kicks off four days of racing at Route 66 Raceway, with NHRA Pro Stock and Nitro funny car, dragster and motorcycle qualifying Friday and Saturday, culminating with championships on Sunday.

The event will be similar to Race Fan Rally, which precedes the NASCAR Chase weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.

While the rally has been a

tradition since NASCAR racing began here in 2001, this is the first year for Nitro Nite.

“This was Mayor Giarrante’s idea a couple of years ago,” Guglielmucci said. “We finally put it together and look forward to it being an annual event.”

Giarrante said he was inspired by the success of Race Fan Rally. He hopes Nitro Nite will bring in a whole new set of fans.

Frankfort buys another downtown building for redevelopment

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – The village may tear down the Fra-Milco Cabinet Co. building after buying it this week as part of downtown redevelopment efforts.

The Village Board on Monday approved buying the property located at 2 Smith Street on Monday for $275,000.

The village plans to take possession in September and may use it for downtown events and activities for a short term, said village administrator

Jerry Ducay.

However, the building may be torn down so the property can be redeveloped for other uses, he said. The planning for the property’s long term use will begin this fall.

Missing boater from Marseilles found The boater who entered the Illinois River in Marseilles to cool off Sunday and went missing has been recovered.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources was called

at 4:20 p.m. Sunday to the Illinois River about a halfmile mile east of the Illini Park boat ramp for a report of a man, now identified as Alberto Rodriguez Jr., 35, of Naperville, who had entered the water from an anchored boat to cool off, according to a news release from the IDNR. Rodriguez was swept downriver by the swift current. Recovery efforts continued Monday and Tuesday for the missing boater, and Rodriguez was found Tuesday in the Illinois River just west of Allen Park in Ottawa, according to the news release.

He was pronounced dead at 12:05 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by the IDNR Conservation Police and the LaSalle County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – One man was injured when a semitrailer and a car collided Tuesday in the construction zone on I-55.

The collision occurred at 12:43 p.m. in the southbound lanes near milepost 248, according to state police.

Master Sgt. Fred Rivera said one man complained of back pain following the crash and was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. The crash snarled traffic for a few minutes, but the southbound lanes were not shut down, Rivera said.

ternoon he expected tickets would be issued once troopers at the scene had filed their reports.

“We’ve actually seen a reduction of crashes in that zone compared to last year. Usually there are three [police] vehicles patrolling in the zone to make sure people slow down,” Rivera said.

Illinois Department of Transportation crews have closed lanes on the Des Plaines River Bridge for repairs during the past two summers, leading to frequent delays between Route 52 and Lorenzo Road. There were 172 crashes reported last year in the construction zone, including two fatal ones.

MORRIS – Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District continued the search Tuesday for the 20-year-old female missing after a boat became lodged Sunday in the Dresden Dam just east of Morris on the Illinois River.

The search went on for about three and a half hours, Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said, but crews did not find her during that time.

“We’re hoping with water receding it will be easier on the rescue team,” Deputy Chief Bob Wills said.

The water from flooding has started to recede along the banks and the current has slowed down, although still stronger than nonflood stage, Steffes said.

Alarm System Division 15 is scheduled to meet again Wednesday morning to check the banks both upstream and downstream.

“We’ll start again tomorrow morning and it will be at least a five-hour day if we don’t find her sooner,” Wills said. “We will start downstream and work our way back upstream.”

The previous searches have all been focused upstream from Stratton Park in Morris.

PLAINFIELD – The village is making progress on two big capital works projects aimed at easing traffic along the Route 59 corridor.

Engineering firms outlined plans for improving Renwick Road and a future Lockport Street bypass at the Village Board’s committee of the whole meeting on Monday.

Renwick Road improvements would connect west Plainfield with downtown.

Work wouldn’t start until 2017. It would cost an estimated $1.6 million, not including land acquisition, utility work and engineering costs.

The board also got an update on the Lockport Street bypass project, which Trustee Margie Bonuchi said is costly but vital for the village. The plan has been nar-

Man dies in quarry accident

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – A McHenry man died Monday after he was apparently run over by a dump truck in a quarry.

Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa said officers and paramedics were called at 9:40 a.m. to Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Quarry in the 300 block of Royce Road after a man suffered a stomach wound and was found in back of a dump truck.

Bryan J. Reid, 63, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Will County Coroner’s office.

“Allegedly the victim failed to secure the truck and was run over,” Rompa said.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Tuesday. The Occupational Safety and Health Admin-

istration and the Mining Safety and Health Adminis-

tration were notified about the incident, Rompa said.

Channahon School Board approves tentative budget

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The Channahon School Board has approved a tentative budget for 2015.

Total revenues are expected to be $20.54 million, which would be a 3.3 percent increase over revenues received last year, according to the tentative budget the board approved Monday. Expenditures are budgeted at $18.20 million, which would be a 4 percent increase. The tentative budget is a balanced one, according to District 17 officials.

Finance Director Mike Schroeder said a large part of the increase in expenditures is a new series of reading/language arts textbooks, approved by the board in January at a cost of $140,000. Other larger expense items will include a new HVAC unit to serve the multipurpose room at Three Rivers School and the potential of bus purchases.

Medical benefits also continue to rise, and Schroeder said a 15 percent increase was budgeted for that line item.

A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 6:55 p.m.

Aug. 25 in the district’s board room.

The board also approved, after a lengthy closed-session discussion, raises for the principals and athletic director of the Channahon schools. The school principals and athletic director were given 3 percent raises. In addition, Athletic Director Brad Homerding’s sal-

ary was adjusted for summer work to increase his base salary by $2,000.

David Bergstrom, the district’s director of technology, also was given a raise due to additional tasks assigned to his job description, according to Superintendent Karin Evans.

His annual salary will increase from $58,568 to $61,496.

In other business, the board: • Approved several upgrades to the fire alarms in three of its schools – N.B. Galloway, Three Rivers and Pioneer Path – totaling $52,992. SimplexGrinnell will install panels, stations, sensors, horns and strobes as identified at the schools.

• Approved adding one item to its wage rate scale. The position of paraprofessional with a teacher’s license was added and given a wage range of $14.50 to $27.50 an hour.

• Approved fundraisers for the district’s PTO (Chip Shoppe catalogue, Market Day, The Kids Stuff Coupon Book, script cards and Savers Thrift Super Store); Music Boosters (Forte 5K run and Pasta Night) and the Athletic Boosters (golf outing at Heritage Bluffs).

• Recognized the district’s track team state qualifiers.

• Discussed the possibility of an open work/study session two hours before its next meeting on Aug. 25.

• Approved sharing the appraisal costs of the proceedings of the Property Tax Appeal Board with the Channahon Township Assessor’s Office.

The school district’s share will be $1,750.

along with police and military vehicles, led the funeral procession from the church.

Mike Stuckey, senior ride captain for the Illinois Patriot Guard Riders, rode his motorcycle alongside Toppen’s casket. Stuckey called Toppen a “true hero.”

“He was a hero. People say that word a lot but it doesn’t carry much weight,” he said. “When I say Aaron was a hero, I mean a hero.

He paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

Thousands lined up along Wolf Road to say their last goodbyes to the fallen soldier. Several could be seen along the nearly threemile route holding a hand over their heart while holding a U.S. flag in the other.

Several nearby businesses changed their marquee signs to pay tribute to Toppen.

At the cemetery, Toppen’s mother, Pam Toppen, was honored with an American flag folded by members of the Armed Forces – a custom in military funerals – after it was lifted from her son’s casket.

“That’s a powerful moment,” Cammack said.

The service at St. John’s Cemetery included the playing of taps and a 21-gun salute. Family and friends released yellow and blue balloons into the sky immediately following the service.

This year has proven to be an exceptionally difficult time for the Toppen family. Toppen’s father, Ronald, died in February. The young soldier was scheduled for deployment that same month, but stayed behind long enough to attend his father’s funeral.

Toppen was buried beside his father Tuesday.

Before Toppen was deployed overseas, Harlow said Toppen got a tattoo inked across his chest – a cross with two dog tags representing both of his grandfathers’ service. The words, “For those I love I sacrifice,” accompany the tattoo, he said.

“We still have some players in the game and some of them are willing to make some changes to adopt to the new rules,” Cook said. “That’s the good news.”

Channahon is even considering the addition of a small corporate center to properly house some of the companies.

Cook said the village still anticipates losing a significant amount of sales tax revenue as many of the village’s purchasing offices would not meet the new standards and will most likely leave Channahon.

“Last time I was here, I told you folks that we were going to ask for everything and probably get about half,” Cook said.

“That looks like where we’re at.”

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said he was not notified about the new rules and could not comment until city officials had a chance to review them.

County officials have estimated the county’s operating budget could shrink by 10 percent if all supplemental sales tax revenues generated in Channahon and Morris offices are lost.

For the past several months, the outlook was grim as the county trimmed each department’s budget by 10 percent in preparation for the loss of revenue.

The finance committee was hopeful the new rules, which replace emergency rules that were implemented in January, could at least mitigate major revenue losses.

“These rules are much more favorable than the emergency rules,” Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said Monday.

MORRIS – Illinois legislators have spoken, and Grundy County is closer to knowing exactly how much supplemental sales tax revenue it could lose from Channahon and Morris.

The two municipalities – and several others throughout the state – are being sued by the Regional Transportation Authority for using tax strategies that enticed companies to open small purchasing offices within Grundy County to take advantage of the county’s low sales-tax rate.

Most Grundy municipalities have a sales tax rate of 6.25 percent, one of the lowest in the state. Chicago’s is 9.25 percent.

To further entice the companies, Channahon and Morris agreed to rebate as much as 85 percent of the sales tax revenue generated in the purchasing offices back to the businesses.

The RTA claims the sales tax revenue generated at these remote purchasing offices should go to Cook County, contending that is where the actual business took place.

The Illinois Department of Revenue became involved in rewriting the state’s sales tax sourcing laws in November when the state Supreme Court ruled the laws were essentially unconstitutional.

The Joint Committee of Administrative Rules adopted the revenue department’s proposed rewrite of the law on June 17.

The standards are structured as a five-part test. Companies must meet at least three of the five criteria to be considered a legal business headquarters. The criteria look at how many employees work at each office, where corporate offices are located and where inventory is housed, among other factors.

RICHARD J. CHURNOVIC, SR. Richard J. Churnovic Sr., age 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 22, 2014 with his loving wife by his side.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Audrey (nee Welz) Churnovic; children, Richard J. (Nancy) Churnovic Jr., Lynn (Michael) Miller, Janice (James) Coats, John A. (Sylvia) Churnovic, Mary Ann (Alan) Hemmingson, Lori Bond, Mark Churnovic, Carrie (George) Santiago; 22 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Darlene (the late Leroy) Marquardt; brother-in-law, Glenn A. (Mary Lou) Welz of CA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Richard was born and raised in Joliet (Crest Hill), IL and graduated from St. Joseph Grade School (Joliet) and Lockport Township High School class of 1943. He was a proud United States Army WWII Veteran and was a member of the American Legion Post #1080 and the VFW Cantigny Post #367. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet.

Richard was also a member of the Will County Seniors, Joliet Rivals Club, St. Joseph Holy Name Society, and KSKJ Lodge #2. Richard was in the retired Teamsters Local # 179 for over 20 years. He retired from Illinois Wine and Spirits in 1986 and was later employed at First Midwest Bank for 17 years retiring a second time in 2006.

Richard was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to the staff at Presence Villa Franciscan and Sunny Hill Nursing Home for the wonderful care provided to Richard.

Herman was born in Joliet on March 6, 1928 and was a life-long area resident. He was a retired bricklayer and member of Local 14.

He especially loved tending to his Rose Garden, spending time with his family and his dog Dino and was an avid Bears Fan. Longtime member of St. Anne’s Parish, National Geographic and the Smithsonian Institute.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON – Felix Dennis, a flamboyant publisher who co-edited the 1960s underground magazine Oz and went on to build a magazine empire, has died. He was 67 and had cancer.

His office said Monday that Dennis died at home in Dorsington, central England, a day

scene depiction of children’s character Rupert Bear.

The cause became a cause celebre, with the “Oz Three” drawing support from celebrities including John Lennon.

Defended by lawyer and novelist John Mortimer, creator of fictional barrister “Rumpole of the Bailey” they were acquitted of conspiracy but sentenced to jail for lesser

offenses. They were eventually acquitted on appeal.

Dennis went on to run his own magazine firm, launching it with Kung-Fu Monthly, at the height of Bruce Lee’s popularity. Dennis Publishing went on to publish some of Britain’s first computer magazines and produce titles including men’s magazine Maxim and news digest The Week.

Dennis, who once claimed to have spent $100 million on “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll,” became a prolific poet in later life.

His company said in a statement that “Felix was a publishing legend, famed for his maverick and entrepreneurial style and, more lately, a successful and much loved poet.

He will be greatly missed.”

He spent most of his career at the Chicago Stockyards in the cattle commission business and then CUNA Mutual before retiring in 1995.

His passions in life included singing in the church choir, playing the harmonica, new restaurants, reading, and playing gin rummy with friends.

Chuck was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hot Springs Village, the VFW, the American Legion, a Mason, and a friend of Bill W. for more than 35 years.

Chuck is survived by his devoted wife Helen, daughter Julie Kapp (Jason) and son Robert (Tracy) and grandchildren Jenny Spangenberger, James, Jordanne & Jill Kapp, Kaitlyn & Jacob Sarsfield, and the world’s cutest great-granddaughter Evelynn, plus a dozen nieces and nephews who thought the world of “Uncle Chuck”.

Memorial services were held at Christ Lutheran Church in HSV on Wednesday the 25th, and internment of ashes at Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg, Iowa on Saturday June 28th.

Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, Arkansas Hospice in Hot Springs, and the Joliet Alano Club.

MARJORIE E. MEADE Marjorie E. Meade (nee Wilson) Mrs. Meade was born the daughter of Ethelbert F. and Sadie E. (nee Tapp) Wilson on June 7, 1917 in Tazewell County at the family home in Hopedale, Illinois and peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at her late Channahon residence at the age of 97 years.

Marjorie was a graduate of the Hopedale School System, she pursued her interest in teaching at the Illinois State Normal Teachers College and came to Minooka to begin her teaching career in 1939.

As life unfolded, Marjorie met and later married Francis Warren Meade on October 2, 1943 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minooka.

Together, they began their cattle and hog business on a 300 acre rented farm and later purchased their present farm home in 1952.

With the beginning of her own family, she put her teaching career “on hold” and returned to teaching when the youngest of 6 children was enrolled in the Channahon School.

Marjorie eventually retired from the Channahon School District in 1973. Yet she remained an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Channahon where she was an inspiring roll model-mentor to new church members who were converts through supportive ministry. In 1989, she and her good friends, Rose Kreiger and Dorothy Kelly chartered the local area T.O.P.S. Club # 2280.

Marjorie leaves to cherish her memory her son, Thomas Meade and wife Carol of Morris, IL; and

Raymond John Osterman (19292014), passed away at his home in Joliet, at the age of 85.

Mr. Osterman was born, January 13, 1929 in Chicago. He retired 24 years ago from ABC-TV to take care of his wife, Dolores, who died of cancer in 1991.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Virginia; his son, Timothy; and daughters, Laurel Ann (James) Kaiser and Sheryl (Steven) DeVore Bailey. He is also survived

by Virginia’s 5 children, and 15 grandchildren; his sister, Viola (Carl) Strupeck; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Lawmaker signs most subpoenas for Quinn program

CHICAGO – Five former state officials under Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration will be subpoenaed to testify about a troubled 2010 anti-violence program next month, but the rejection of two other subpoenas by a key Democratic lawmaker on Tuesday reignited claims of election year politics.

The subpoenas for officials including Quinn’s former chief of staff and a deputy chief needed the signature of state Rep. Frank Mautino after a Legislative Audit Commission subcommittee voted for them Monday. Mautino, of Spring Valley, said Tuesday that he didn’t agree with two others because their duties were outside the scope of an audit that highlighted problems with Quinn’s Neighborhood Recovery Initiative. The bipartisan commission reviews and approves state audits.

But after Mautino’s decision, his co-chair, state Sen. Jason Barickman, a Bloomington Republican, accused Democrats of thwarting the fact-finding process.

Illinois to auction unclaimed coins, jewelry

SPRINGFIELD – Thousands of coins, jewelry and silverware locked away in an Illinois Capitol vault will be auctioned off next month, including a 24-karat gold-covered John F. Kennedy commemorative dollar and several six-pound silver bars.

Treasurer Dan Rutherford’s office announced on Tuesday that it will auction almost 9,000 pieces of property that have gone unclaimed for years.

Quinn cuts some free parking for state employees

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn says the state is going to cut about 35 percent of its paid parking spaces for employees in downtown Chicago.

In a Tuesday news release, his office says eliminating 80 paid spots will save roughly $100,000 yearly. The decision affects state agency workers, mostly chiefs of staff and directors.

Klinzman says the move cuts the number of paid spots from 226 to 146. He says many of those left are for shared cars in downtown garages employees can use.

Quinn’s decision was part of an ongoing “budget review.”

The Chicago Democrat is considering whether to approve a $35.7 billion budget lawmakers sent him.

State spending is a top 2014 election issue. Republican Bruce Rauner is challenging Quinn, who’s seeking a second full term.

1 killed in paraglider crash in northern Illinois

OTTAWA – Authorities have identified a man who died in a crash of a powered paraglider that plunged into the Fox River

in northern Illinois.

The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office and the county coroner’s office say the victim was 50-year-old Jeffrey A. Carpenter of Chicago. He was a passenger in the two-seat paraglider.

The pilot got free of his harness and escaped. He was hospitalized.

Monday night’s accident occurred near the city of Ottawa, about 70 miles southwest of Chicago.

It involved a type of hobbyist aircraft consisting of a cart held aloft by a parachute and propelled by a large motor-driven fan worn as a backpack.

The pilot told sheriff’s deputies the paraglider had engine problems.

It crashed near the Dayton Dam, and water was surging because of recent heavy rains.

Wheat harvest gets rolling in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – As Illinois latest corn and soybean crops grow taller, the state’s harvest of winter wheat is in full swing.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports one-fifth of the state’s winter wheat crop has been brought in from the fields. That is twice the rate of last year’s harvest at this time, but off from the average pace of 31 percent over the previous five years.

The USDA says 53 percent of Illinois’ corn crop is rated as being in good condition, and another 25 percent is in excellent shape.

More than half of the soybean crop is said to be in good shape, while an additional 18 percent is in excellent condition.

In a world suddenly more dangerous, you’d think fund managers and traders would be selling and buying and selling again in a frenzy of second-guessing. Instead, they’re the picture of calm and contentment.

People are trading 38 percent less each day than they did four years ago. Prices of bonds and stocks are barely moving day by day. For 46

days in a row the Standard and Poor’s 500 index has risen or fallen by less than 1 percent, a state of serenity unmatched since 1995. Then, last Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen told investors the U.S. economic recovery was on track, and things got really dull. A gauge of expected swings in stock prices, known as the “fear index” among traders, sunk to lows not seen since 2007, when stocks began a 2 ½ year plunge.

Which helps explain why the calm may not last: The lack of fear is spooking some people.

“It’s quiet out there,” says Robert Buckland, chief global stock strategist at Citigroup.

“Eerily quiet.”

As with weather, the theory goes, so with markets: Calm often precedes storms.

Investors get cocky, take on

too much risk, and prices of stocks and bonds collapse.

Most professional investors, strategists and economists don’t appear worried that the lack of worry is leading to reckless bets, not yet anyway. Yellen, for one, says there’s little evidence of trouble brewing. But a few dissenting voices see trouble aplenty.

Investors are borrowing money more than ever to buy stocks. Sales of “junk” bonds from the riskiest companies are at a record. Some investors are so heedless now that they’re willing to accept rock-bottom interest payments to lend to risky countries.

Spain, struggling to collect taxes from a population facing 26 percent unemployment, is paying just 1.3 percent to borrow money for five years, less than the U.S. pays.

Archivist: IRS disobeyed law with lost emails WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service did not follow the law when it failed to report the loss of records belonging to a senior IRS executive, the nation’s top archivist told Congress on Tuesday, in the latest development in the congressional probe of the agency’s targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.

In June 2011, IRS executive Lois Lerner’s computer crashed, resulting in the loss of records that are sought in investigations into the agency’s actions.

At the time, the agency tried to recover Lerner’s records, but with no success.

BAGHDAD – Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is ready to concede, at least temporarily, the loss of much of Iraq to Sunni insurgents and is instead deploying the military’s besttrained and equipped troops to defend Baghdad, Iraqi officials said Tuesday.

Shiite militias responding to a call to arms by Iraq’s top cleric also are focused on protecting the capital and Shiite shrines, while Kurdish fighters have grabbed a long-coveted oil-rich city outside their self-ruled territory, ostensibly to defend it from the al-Qaida breakaway group.

With Iraq’s bitterly divided sects focused on self-interests, the situation on the ground is increasingly looking like the fractured state the Americans have hoped to avoid.

“We are facing a new reality and a new Iraq,” the top Kurdish leader, Massoud Barzani, told U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday in Irbil, capital of the self-ruled Kurdish region in northern Iraq.

Two weeks after a series of

disastrous battlefield setbacks in the north and west, al-Maliki is struggling to devise an effective strategy to repel the relentless advances by militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a well-trained and mobile force thought to have some 10,000 fighters inside Iraq. The response by government forces has been far short of a counteroffensive, restricted mostly to areas where Shiites are in danger of falling prey to the Sunni extremists or around a Shiite shrine north of Baghdad.

These weaknesses were highlighted when the government tried but failed to retake Tal Afar, a mixed Shiite-Sunni city of some 200,000 that sits strategically near the Syrian border. The government claimed it had retaken parts of the city but the area remains under the control of the militants after a battle in which some 30 volunteers and troops were killed.

Government forces backed by helicopter gunships have also fought for a week to defend Iraq’s largest oil refinery in Beiji, north of Baghdad, where a top military official said Tuesday that Sunni militants were regrouping for another push to capture the sprawling facility.

Extremists abduct 91 more people in Nigeria

By HARUNA UMAR and MICHELLE FAUL The Associated Press MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Extremists have abducted 91 more people, including toddlers as young as 3, in weekend attacks on villages in Nigeria, witnesses said Tuesday, providing fresh evidence of the military’s failure to curb an Islamic uprising and the government’s inability to provide security.

The kidnappings come less than three months after more than 200 schoolgirls were taken in a mass abduction that embarrassed Nigeria’s government and military because of their slow response. Those girls still are being held captive.

The most recent victims

included 60 girls and women, some of whom were married, and 31 boys, witnesses said.

A local official confirmed the abductions, but security forces denied them.

There was no way to safely and independently confirm the report from Kummabza, 95 miles from Maiduguri, capital of Borno state and headquarters of a military state of emergency that has failed to curtail near-daily attacks by Boko Haram fighters.

Vigilante leader Aji Khalil said Tuesday the abductions took place Saturday in an attack that killed four villagers.

Khalil lives in Maiduguri but gets reports daily from other vigilante groups that have had some success in repelling Boko Haram with primitive weapons.

Take advantage of summer festivities It’s officially summer, and after the winter we’ve had, it’s time to get outside and enjoy every minute of it. Thankfully, there is plenty to do this weekend in the area.

While this area may not get the attention it deserves, it is a hub for events and high-drawing audiences, which is not only an advantage to a summer weekend, but to the economy, as well. Between the races, street events and sports games, thousands of people are sinking money into our restaurants and stores.

Just look at the Route 66 Raceway – with racing season revving into full gear with NHRA Weekend. Between this weekend’s scheduled races, flame-blazing Nitro Nite and free-admission kids’ day, the raceway expects crowds from throughout the United States to pack the midway from Thursday through Sunday. Plus, every ticket is a pit pass – who doesn’t want to get right next to a car capable of 300 mph speeds while collecting autographs from the drivers?

If racing isn’t your thing, the Taste of Joliet kicks off at noon Friday. In addition to 25 food vendors, the Taste has lined up acts including Sammy Hagar and a slew of country bands including Thompson Square. Here’s the advantage of having our own Taste event: no downtown Chicago traffic, crowds or parking, and food that is just as tasty.

With last year drawing in a record-breaking attendance, you may want to get there early.

Remember, no chairs are allowed inside, but that just frees up an extra hand for eating.

Silver Cross Field also is full of events this weekend for the Slammers’ homestand – including a Harry Potter night on Friday.

Yes, baseball with wizards and muggles alike, but with advantages for costume enthusiasts. The Slammers are handing out free game tickets to everyone in their Harry Potter-best. Then there’s the fireworks, followed by live concerts on Saturday night and a Cartoon Network-hosted event on Sunday.

And this is just one weekend of the summer. THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Illinois not following own literacy standards A bit of hay is being made, over a grammar error that will appear on the ballot this November.

It seems, no one caught the improper use of the word “their” in the text of the proposed ballot question.

The measure asks, “Should the Illinois Constitution be amended to require that each school district receive additional revenue, based on their number of students, from an additional 3 percent tax on income greater than one million dollars?”

Of course to be grammatically correct the word “its” should be used instead of “their” because “each school district” is singular.

I can see 100 copy editors I’ve known clucking their tongues in unison and shaking their heads.

My old high school English teacher Miss Finch will probably enter the voting booth red pen in hand ready to correct the ballot and hand it back to the election judge marked “F.”

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder Illinois is a place where legislators talk about raising literacy standards – but don’t practice them.

Of course the problem with this ballot question goes far beyond grammar.

First of all, the question doesn’t specify what sort of income should be taxed.

Are we talking about gross income? Or are we talking net income?

Are they talking about corporate income or personal income?

The measure doesn’t specify.

And, of course, those things are important.

Lots of businesses may take in more than $1 million in annual income, but still be losing money.

For example, a farmer may sell more than $1 million in corn, but after he pays his landlord his rent, spends money on seed, fertilizer, herbicides, machinery and interest on loans he may well end up in the red.

Lots of other small business people find themselves in the same predicament.

But would this proposal add another cost to doing business for already struggling firms? We don’t know, because it doesn’t specify whether it a tax on gross income or net income.

But one thing we do know is that the more we tax folks who create jobs, the fewer jobs there will be.

An example of this positive growth is the very recent addition of the Physicians Immediate Care facility built over the last few months on the corner of Black Road and Larkin Ave. The anticipation of the downtown Joliet City Center completion, renovation of the historic Union Station and the recently announced new/renovated facade of our magnificent Rialto Theatre are all clear signs that positive growth continues and prospers in the City of Joliet.

PRAISE TO RESIDENT FOR BETTERING JOLIET To the Editor: In late 1970s, a group of individuals, many of whom represented various art interests, met at the home of Dorothy Mavrich. She is well-known as the woman responsible for saving the Rialto Square Theatre from the wrecking ball.

This grassroots cadre explored the possibility of a unified effort to benefit the

growth of the arts in the Joliet area.

From this initial meeting, a mission statement was developed, along with the organization’s name as the Cultural Arts Council of the Joliet Area (CAC).

Tigers will return four starters from 2013-14 season

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – The 2013-14 basketball season ended too soon for Plainfield North, but the experienced Tigers have been busy preparing for a 2014-15 season that could be one to remember.

Led by 6-foot-5 point guard Trevor Stumpe, who already has a handful of Division I offers, Plainfield North competed last week at the Joliet West Summer Shootout before similar events at Morris and Bloom. The Morris Shootout begins Wednesday.

North returns four starters from the 21-8 team that lost to West Aurora in the Blackhawks’ Class 4A regional final.

“We had the talent to go pretty far and win a lot of games, but we made a lot of mental mistakes late in games, giving up leads,’’ Stumpe said.

“We’ve all matured somewhat, we’re still working on it. I think we’ll get it together by the season.’’

Stumpe called last season “a bit of a learning experience’’ for the team, which also is a good description for the summer shootout events.

“You’re here for several hours, all day,’’ North coach Bob Krahulik said between games at the Joliet West event.

“You get to know each other, but more importantly, they get to know each other on the floor, playing with guys who weren’t with us last year.

“You’re not as much worried about winning or losing.

We’re more focused on what we need to get better at. We don’t screen very well as a team. That’s our primary focus.’’

Krahulik also sees the shootouts as an opportunity to get everyone playing time, and not worry as much about mistakes as he would during the season.

“Our team gets together well,’’ said Krieger, a 6-4 guard who started last season as a sophomore. “The bond helps on the court. You know what each other is going to do. This helps a lot.’’

“We’re seeing these guys every day and creating friendships,’’ Stumpe said. “A lot of us, it’s our senior year. We want to have a good time and win basketball games.’’

“The guys we have coming back have gotten so much better,’’ Krahulik said. “Kevin is going to be phenomenal. Trevor is a great player.

“We’re pretty deep and pretty talented.’’

It all starts with Stumpe, who at 6-5 can run the offense with a viewpoint most point guards don’t have in high school.

“He understands the game.

He just knows how to score,’’ Krahulik said. “Sometimes he looks awkward out there, but he knows how to get by his man, knows how to beat him.

He knows how to read screens to get a shot.’’

Stumpe already has offers from Illinois-Chicago, Wofford, Northern Illinois and North Dakota and is talking to Drake, Rutgers, Virginia and ‘’many others,’’ he said.

“I have no timetable, but I’ll know a lot more after the July recruiting period for AAU ball,’’ Stumpe said. “I’ll have a better idea then.’’

Stumpe, who plays AAU with the Illinois Wolves, described himself as “a big guard who can take someone off the dribble and also knock down a shot.’’

With two high school seasons to go, Krieger expects to knock down plenty of shots for the Tigers.

“I think we’re going to be better than last year,’’ Krieger said. “We’re working on our game a lot.’’

JOLIET – Joliet Central boys basketball coach Jeff Corcoran agreed to split his squad for last weekend’s Joliet West Shootout.

A couple of teams did not show, and West coach Nick DiForti needed to fill out the 32-team bracket. Corcoran agreed to help, with his seniors forming the main Central entry and his underclassmen serving as the other team.

“I hate to split our squads, but all the kids are getting major minutes, so in that sense it’s helpful,” Corcoran said.

A prime motivations for summer basketball is to get all your potential roster members adequate playing time.

That affords coaches the opportunity to learn more about who can play and be trusted in certain situations.

After losing eight seniors to graduation from last year’s 18-10 team, Corcoran and assistant Brian Koehne are in that mode.

“It’s an identity thing,” Corcoran said. “We’re trying to find a unit of guys that can put it together.

“Coming into the last several years, we knew we would use our motion offense. I’m not sure that will work with this group. Summer is for finding out who we are.”

What is known for the Steelmen is they have some quickness and little size.

“We’re small, a lot smaller than last year, but we’re hoping we’ll be energetic and fun to watch,” Corcoran said.

“We’re scrappy.”

A potential guard tandem of senior Jerry Gillespie and junior Taquan Sims can ignite the offense.

“Jerry and TQ both got a taste of it last year,” Corcoran said. “I’m confident we have a good guard combination.”

As for other assets, Corcoran continued, “Darius Stokes gives us the type of shooter we have not had since Jalen Heath a couple of years ago.

We can throw the ball into the post now. He occupies that space.”

Kenyon Woodfork and Kewon Ware, like Gillespie, are seniors with varsity experience. “They all can play,” Corcoran said. “We have to find the right mixture.”

“We have guys who can score,” Ware said. “We just have to run our plays and that will work out. Jerry Gillespie will get it going at point guard. He will make sure we are doing things right.

“We’re real small, but we just have to box out. We need energy off the bench, too.”

Ware is barely 6 feet and said he may spend some time in the post. Central will need to find ways to offset its lack of height.

“One thing is we have to do is get in shape and keep in shape,” Ware said. “That will help us win games.”

Assuming they don’t land

in the starting lineup, the Steelmen have three sophomores who can contribute off

the bench in Jose Grubbs, Jason Bingham and Marcellus Hornsby.

“Grubbs is a guard now but may become a swing man,” Corcoran said. “Bingham is a point guard and very coachable. Hornsby is athletic, lanky.”

Senior Ternell Jordan is a vocal leader who will provide more depth, “We lost eight seniors; all of our firepower is gone,” Corcoran said. “We need someone to step up. But the points are easy if we stick to the system and stay within ourselves.

“We have gotten off to fast starts in previous years and then hit a rough stretch. What we have to do is peak and then maintain it. Right now, though, we’re trying to find out who we are.”

If the Steelmen can accomplish what Ware suggests, they will be fine.

“We have to stay focused and play our game,” he said.

“We have the mentality that we will never lose a home game. We think that will give us a strong season.”

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Who was that green giant snapping the ball during last week’s University of St. Francis 7-on-7 Passing Jamboree at Memorial Stadium?

Why, it was none other than Coal City’s man mountain, senior Matt Long.

From a size standpoint, Long certainly is recognizable. In other ways, however, he is not the same guy even to the Coalers’ coaching staff.

“It’s night and day with him,” coach Lenny Onsen said, comparing Long’s current offseason with that of a year ago. “He has really picked it up this offseason. It’s part of the whole maturing thing.”

“Last offseason, all I worked on was strength,” Long said. “This year I worked on strength and agility and it’s been a lot better.”

Long is 6-foot-5 and said he weighs between 300 and 305 pounds. “Last year I was between 315 and 320 at the end of the year,” he added. “I felt that by weighing less, I could be a better player.”

“Matt’s kind of an unknown [nationally] because he didn’t have the greatest junior year,” Onsen said. “He’s had a phenomenal offseason and received the Tom Lemming Underclassmen Award.

He has been all over the country at camps, getting his name out there. Cal-Berkeley has been hot on him.”

Long said he attended a three-day camp at Nebraska earlier this month, made the eight-hour drive home and the next day was at a camp at Northern Illinois. This week, he trekked to Western Illinois.

Whether he eventually lands in a Division I program is not his main concern at this time, however.

“Cal-Berkeley showing interest got me excited,” he said.

“But any school that gives me a chance I’ll be happy with. I

Long played offensive tackle last season, when the Coalers finished 5-5, bowing out in the opening round of the playoffs. Wherever he lines up this fall, he will be the main man in an offensive line

that Onsen said “could be our anchor.”

“The last time I played center was back in the [Coal City] Miner days, but I don’t care where I play,” Long said.

“Wherever the team needs me is where I’ll be.”

Junior quarterbacks Brad Littleton and Nick Micetich have been taking snaps from Long in the summer. “Both

are getting some reps,” Onsen. “We’ll see how it all happens.”

The big news for the offense is the return of senior tailback Jack Dibble from his second anterior cruciate ligament injury.

“We’re hoping he can have a great bounce-back year,” Onsen said. “He could be a real go-to guy. Keegan McKinney, a senior receiver, could be a nice player, too.”

“I get chills when you mention Jack Dibble being back,” Long said. “He is just a playmaker. If he gains 20 yards, I’m disappointed in the kid that he didn’t go farther, maybe take it all the way.”

Onsen said there are a few key faces back on the defensive side of the ball. Long, for example, saw some time on the defensive line and likely will again.

“Peter Czaja will be our middle linebacker and will mix in a little on offense, too,” Onsen said. “Corey Jurzak and D.J. Budde are two defensive backs who are back.

“We hope we can play a lot of kids on one side of the ball only, but we’ll see. We’re a work in progress, we really are.”

The attitude, though, is good.

“Last year, we were supposed to be pretty good and finished 5-5,” said Long, who like some of their teammates donated his time and muscle to the recovery effort when a tornado struck Diamond and Coal City last November.

“I don’t think everyone was fully committed last year.

This year it’s different. This is the most committed team I’ve seen.”

The Associated Press BALTIMORE – Jose Quintana allowed one run in seven innings, Gordon Beckham homered and the White Sox beat the Orioles, 4-2, on Tuesday night to end a five-game losing streak.

Alexei Ramirez had two hits and scored twice for the last-place Sox, who had lost nine of 11 overall and eight straight on the road.

One night after blowing a ninth-inning lead in the series opener, Sox closer Ronald Belisario entered in the ninth with no outs and a runner on first.

It was his second start since returning from a 17-day stint on the disabled list with a strained right oblique, and like the last one, he failed to get into the sixth inning.

Two batters into the game, Gonzalez and the Orioles fell behind for good when Beckham drove a fastball into the seats in left field for his seventh home run.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby won his second Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player Tuesday night at the league’s postseason awards ceremony in Las Vegas.

Crosby also collected the Art Ross Trophy as the league scoring champion and the Ted Lindsay Award as the players’ choice for the NHL’s most outstanding player.

A marketing major with a 3.76 cumulative GPA, Blaszczyk registered All-America accolades in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field in 2013-14.

After helping lead St. Francis to a fourth-place team finish at the NAIA Cross Country Championships with his

17th-place individual showing, he placed eighth in the 5,000-meter run at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships and sixth in the 10,000 at the NAIA Outdoor Championships.

A two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete and three-time Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic choice, Blaszczyk was tabbed as the NAIA National Runner of the Week in both cross country and outdoor track and field during the 2013-14 campaign.

St. Francis seniors Chelsea Rimington and Hilary Halford have been named to the Capital One Academic All-America College Division Women’s Cross Country/ Track & Field Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A first-team pick, Rimington earned All-America honors in the shot put at both the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Champion-

ships this past season. After finishing fifth in the event at the national indoor meet, she capped her career with a third-place showing at the NAIA outdoor championships.

An elementary education major carrying a 3.84 GPA, Rimington was also an NAIA Scholar-Athlete and twotime Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic selection during her career.

With her selection to the second team, Halford became the first USF women’s cross country/track and field athlete to repeat as an Academic All-American. She was a third-team pick a year ago.

Halford earned her second straight All-America award in cross country as she finished 20th overall to help lead St. Francis to a 12th-place team finish at the 2013 NAIA Championships.

Two weeks earlier, she topped a 107-runner field at the CCAC Championships.

During the track and field campaign, she qualified to participate in the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the distance medley relay and 5,000-mile run, respectively.

A two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete and three-time CCAC All-Academic Team honoree, Halford carries a 3.54 cumulative e as a nursing major.

St. Francis posts best showing in NAIA standings: The University of St. Francis posted its highest finish to date in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup NAIA standings as it placed 30th among nearly 300 institutions in 2013-14.

USF’s 30th-place showing edged last year’s 32nd-place performance as the school’s highest since the NAIA Directors’ Cup was established in 1995-96.

It also marked the fifth time in as many years that the Saints demonstrated improvement over the previous campaign.

After finishing between 104th and 191st from 2008-11, St. Francis jumped to 35th in 2011-12.

Five USF teams notched top-30 finishes in NAIA Championship competition in 2013-14.

Men’s cross country led the way with a fourth-place showing, followed by women’s cross country (12th), men’s outdoor track and field (22nd), women’s outdoor track and field (26th) and women’s indoor track and field (27th). Additionally, the St. Francis baseball team reached the NAIA Opening Round.

USF accumulated 375.5 points in the final Directors’ Cup standings. Of the 14 members of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, only Olivet Nazarene University (fifth place, 741.75 points) outperformed the Saints.

Four other schools represented the CCAC among the top-100.

OLIET – Pub Grub at American Legion Post 1080: serving up homestyle food and veteran support in every tasty bite.

Tuesdays through Fridays, this restaurant offers regular daily specials – from cabbage rolls and pierogies to all-youcan-eat chicken dinners. Fridays feature a fish fry. Pub Grub’s secondary menu items continually change, said owner Ed Wysocki of Joliet.

Wysocki draws on a long tradition of great recipes. His father, Edward Wysocki Sr., owned a restaurant in Chicago until 1978, where Ed and his siblings all worked. Wysocki’s wife, Diana Wysocki, grew up on a farm.

“We have a whole binder full of recipes,” Wysocki said.

Included in that binder is his mother Irene’s pepper steak, as well as her pierogi recipe. Wysocki adjusted the yields of Diana’s popular dessert recipes – such as Jell-O cake, fudge cake and apple crisp – to serve hundreds instead of eight to 10. For Pub Grub’s homemade meatloaf, he took elements from Ed Sr.’s meatloaf recipe and the one Diana prepares.

“We’re actually going to be revising our menu again to include ribs and chicken chunks,” Wysocki said. “We’d also like to add some openfaced sandwiches, things that like that.”

Wysocki and his siblings – three older sisters and three younger brothers – all learned to cook at The People’s Restaurant, where Ed Sr. served quite a few Polish specialties. Then for 31 years, Wysocki said he worked in the private sector, for a company that eventually shipped its production overseas, he said.

While contemplating his next venture, Wysocki told Diana, “If I could do anything, I’d open up a restaurant.” He said Diana replied, “Well, you’re not getting any younger.”

When the American Legion Post 1080 began accepting bids to lease out its kitchen, Wysocki knew he had found his culinary home.

Two weeks later, Wysocki said the post called and asked if he could be ready to go in a month. Wysocki promised to do his best, and they moved in during a weekend, and were open that Monday.

“We never missed a beat,”

he said.

Wysocki said Pub Grub offers delicious food at very reasonable prices. For instance, a patty melt is $5.25; an Italian beef sandwich is $6.25; a triple-decker grilled cheese is $3.50; a quarter-pounder hamburger is $4.50; and a halfpound burger is just an extra dollar. And all those sandwiches include fries.

“We have regulars for the ‘all you can eat buffet,’ ” he said. “We’ve met some really wonderful people here. It’s amazing how much support

the community has given us.”

In addition to running Pub Grub, Wysocki caters the post’s hall rentals, golf outings, women’s auxiliary parties and veteran-related events. He recently prepared the food for the Sons of the American Legion Breakfast Buffet.

“It’s long hours,” he said, “but it’s exciting.”

Pub Grub doesn’t serve Mondays, but Wysocki generally puts in half a day with ordering food for the rest of the week. He generally doesn’t mind.

“My mom always said, ‘It must be in your blood, just like your father,’ ” he said.

Also like his father, Wysocki’s family supports the restaurant. His daughter, Jackie, is a waitress; his son, Eddie of Boston, helps out whenever he’s in town. Two of his brothers – Dave Wysocki of Tinley Park and Bob Wysocki of Crestwood – work the fish fries.

Most of the time Diana is with him, waitressing, assembling appetizers or working side by side with him in the kitchen.

“Sometimes we’re cooking for 100 people, it’s just her and

me,” Wysocki said. “I definitely could not do this without her.”

Wysocki recalled how, when he was still employed, he often stopped at the American Legion Post 1080 after work. It was the ideal place to unwind and he loved hearing veterans share their stories.

Pub Grub satisfies Ed’s proprietor yearnings, offers the community good food and supports the veterans, all at the same time.

“It had just gotten to the point in my life where I wondered, ‘What can I do to give back?’ ” he said. “I can even walk to work.”

Mom’s Homemade Pierogies Dough: 2 cups flour 6 to 8 ounces small curd cottage cheese 2 eggs Filling (choose one or mix and match): Mashed potatoes flavored with American cheese Strawberry pie filling Sauerkraut (saute first in a little bacon fat, add caraway seeds, brown sugar, bacon and onions and then stew for 15 minutes) Mix dough ingredients by hand or with a KitchenAid. Place in a glass bowl and chill in the refrigerator for one hour. Roll out dough. Using a 4-inch diameter cutter, cut circles out of the dough. Fill and then pinch shut with a fork. Boil in water until they float, dunk in ice water to cool and lay on cookie sheet to dry.

Yield: 17 to 19 pierogies, depending on humidity.

In yesterday’s deal, East used the bidding and early play to place the missing high cards and to work out the best defense against four hearts.

Here is a second deal along the same lines. South is in four hearts.

West leads the spade queen. South wins with his ace and plays a trump to dummy’s queen. What should East do?

South rebid three no-trump because North might have raised hearts with only three-card support if he had a minimum opening bid with, for example, 1-3-5-4 distribution. Here, though, North corrected to the heart game because he had two unstopped suits and four strong hearts.

East should wonder which four tricks his side might win. Since West’s opening lead marks South with the spade ace and king, there are no spade winners available.

East has one heart trick. There are no diamond winners, because even if South is missing the king, the finesse is working. So the defenders need three club tricks, or two clubs and a club ruff.

This should make East’s path clear. He must win with his heart ace and shift to the club five.

Now the spotlight falls on South. If he rises with his club king, he will make the contract (with an overtrick if he draws trumps, cashes his spade and diamond winners, and endplays West with his club queen). But if South finesses his jack, West wins with his queen, returns the club two and receives a club ruff for down one.

Prevention is the key to avoid developing dementia Dear Doctor K: What is vascular dementia? Can it be prevented?

Dear Reader: The term “dementia” describes a serious impairment of mental function. It may include memory loss, confusion, personality changes and the dwindling ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. The second most common is vascular dementia.

Vascular dementia results when blood vessels don’t deliver enough oxygen to the brain.

There may be atherosclerosis in the arteries that block blood flow.

High blood pressure may cause the arteries to narrow and increase the amount of atherosclerosis.

Sometimes this leads to a major stroke. Such strokes can cause a person to suddenly lose the ability to move a part of their body, to talk, to understand speech, to feel or to see. After such a major stroke, dementia can occur.

Multiple smaller strokes can occur, as well. They can be so small, and produce such mild symptoms, that a person is not even aware they happened. Slowly, they can degrade mental function and cause dementia. Multiple small strokes sometimes are discovered by brain scans (such as CT and MRI scans) performed to diagnose the cause of

Symptoms of vascular dementia can look just like Alzheimer’s disease. The person may get confused. Speech may slur.

Thinking may become less sharp.

But symptoms do vary. Depending on what area of the brain is affected, memory may not even be impaired. Instead, other problems may appear, such as difficulties calculating numbers.

Once vascular dementia develops, treatment options are limited.

Doctors sometimes prescribe drugs used for Alzheimer’s disease, but they are less effective in people with vascular dementia.

That’s why prevention is key.

What’s bad for the heart is also bad for the brain. The same steps you take to prevent heart attacks also reduce your risk of strokes and vascular dementia. They even reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease. (And several forms of cancer, but that’s for another column.)

So, you won’t be surprised to learn that the following can be profoundly beneficial in protect-

ing your brain from both vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease: • Control blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

• If you smoke, quit.

• Adopt a heart-healthy diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, oily fish and unsaturated fats.

• Exercise regularly.

• Drink alcohol in moderation.

And there are other things you can do that are specific to preventing dementia and memory loss: • Spend time with family and friends.

• Keep your mind active with education, volunteering and hobbies.

• Identify and treat depression.

Like all of us, I never want to develop a serious illness. But if I had to rank all the serious illnesses that I might get, dementia is the one I want most to avoid. Life sometimes has other plans for you, but don’t think that developing dementia is just an act of fate, something you cannot influence.

You really can protect yourself against developing dementia.

Wife talks to husband about quitting tobacco Dr. Wallace: My husband and I are both 20. We have been married for over a year and are the parents of a 2-year-old daughter.

Both my husband and I have been smoking for over four years and are totally addicted.

But we are aware of the dangers of secondhand smoke so we keep our house smoke-free.

We have talked several times about quitting tobacco, but we have not yet put out that last cigarette. If by chance we don’t quit smoking, is it possible that this will encourage our children to “light up,” or even if we do smoke, but encourage our children to never start smoking, will it be the same as if we were not smoking? – Mother, York, Pa. In ‘ ’Til the Well Runs Dry,’ a tale turns on West Indian woman’s secrets

By KRISSAH THOMPSON The Washington Post The moment still brings Lauren Francis-Sharma to tears, ruining her mascara in front of company, darn it.

Sitting in the kitchen of her bright and airy home in Kensington, Md., she is seeing in her mind’s eye the hospital bed and her grandmother lying there after having had a stroke. As she looked at the ailing Trinidadian woman she called “Ma,” Francis-Sharma felt immediate regret.

“I did not know her story,” the 42-year-old says between sips of green tea.

That moment led Francis-Sharma, an unhappy corporate mergers and acquisition attorney turned stay-athome mom, to her first novel. The thin threads of the little she knew of her grandmother’s life were woven into “ ‘Til the Well Runs Dry,” a recently released tale that turns on a West Indian woman’s secrets.

Francis-Sharma’s grandmother, Jane DeGannes, immigrated to the United States alone from rural Trinidad, fleeing an unhappy marriage and leaving her children temporarily behind, and built a life from scratch.

As a child, Francis-Sharma thought of “Ma” as mysterious and terse. Children were to be quiet, lest the racket bother the neighbors below Ma’s Flatbush apartment. Children were to be squeaky clean and bathed nightly and were forbidden from sitting on DeGannes’s bed with “outside” clothes on.

Francis-Sharma longed for the outwardly loving Southern black grandmothers she had grown up around in Baltimore, the kind of women who enveloped children in big hugs and sweetly said, “Hey, baby.”

DeGannes did not offer hugs, and Francis-Sharma and her grandmother sometimes hardly understood each other — one with proper American-accented English, the other mixing her English with Creole patois and Trinidadian sayings, such as “You wouldn’t learn until you burn” and “Grass have ears,” meaning watch what you say.

But DeGannes’s stroke in 2008 began a journey of intense curiosity for Francis-Sharma.

‘Til the Well Runs Dry’ is written by Lauren Francis-Sharma. had it felt like to leave her children behind in Trinidad?

Francis-Sharma, a wife and mother of two daughters, was angry with herself, feeling that she had lost an opportunity to ask the questions. Had she asked DeGannes, she would likely have been shooed away, she says. “It’s unfair. People have to tell their stories before they go. It’s important to know your history — your specific history.”

Writing the novel, over two years, was a way of filling in the details.

Like DeGannes, the book’s main character Marcia (mah-SEE-ah) is from Blanchisseuse, a rural seaside village in the north of Trinidad, where in the 1940s people “were still dragging their bare heels along hot dirt roads, growing their own produce and sweating to keep their one or two underfed fowls from straying into a greedy neighbor’s yard,” Francis-Sharma writes. When she visited the town as a teenager, there were outhouses.

Francis-Sharma imagines her grandmother’s challenging marriage and the confusion, cruelty and kind-

ness she likely encountered in the United States.

And she paints the limited opportunities for women in Trinidad during her grandmother’s era, when poor women were relegated to sewing, cooking or pressing shirts in a factory.

She includes the Calypso music that echoed through her grandmother’s apartment and the traditional Caribbean food and drink, such as sorrel and roast bake, a flatbread dripping with butter, that her grandmother often made.

Marcia’s tough-love relationship with her children also stems from Francis-Sharma’s observations of “Ma,” who would speak French patois with her friends but never taught the dialect to her children and grandchildren because she believed there were conversations to which only adults should be privy.

Likewise, Marcia does not tell her children she is leaving for America until days before her departure, but it is clear why she is emigrating.

“I didn’t see her as who she was until writing the book,” Francis-Sharma says of her grandmother, her eyes again filling with tears. “It’s easy for those of us who have settled and who have been settled for a generation or two to forget what it feels like to want to open an opportunity for your children.”

Women’s magazines from Elle to Oprah Winfrey’s O have praised Francis-Sharma’s novel, and it was recently the centerpiece of a small book festival in Washington during Caribbean Heritage Month, a celebration in its ninth year that occurs each June and is usually dominated by boisterous parades and festivals.

The D.C. Carnival is June 28, and the preceding week is National Caribbean Restaurant Week.

But beneath all of that Carnival flair and celebration are stories and sometimes secrets, Francis-Sharma says.

The notes she receives from other West Indians who have read her book include messages such as “My mother didn’t tell us either.”

In Francis-Sharma’s novel, the children hear the truth of Marcia’s story. It is a scene, you can tell, that Francis-Sharma wishes was real.
