Road crews work to clear streets and sidewalks of tree branches and yard debris Monday after strong winds ripped through Joliet.

Plainfield, according to the National Weather Service.

Damage in Joliet occurred late in the afternoon, when the National Weather Service measured wind speeds as high as 48 mph. At 4:50 p.m., a large tree fell onto the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Larkin Avenue.

A tree that fell in the 300 block of Margaret Street caught on an electrical line and tore the service box out of a house, said Fire Chief

Joe Formhals.

That also happened in the afternoon, when the fire department responded to a couple other calls of wires down and transformers on fire.

Formhals said about 3,500 people lost power in Joliet.

A tree also came down near Route 59 and Caton Farm Road at 4:05 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Tornado damages motel, knocks down power lines in Braidwood

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – The storm that tore through Coal City also created some havoc at an Interstate 55 interchange in Braidwood where a motel and gas station were damaged, power lines were blown down onto the interstate, and three trucks rolled over.

One person was injured in the truck rollovers, according to state police. He was taken to Morris Hospital with minor injuries.

By BOB OKON JOLIET – City crews on Tuesday morning continued to clean up tree damage from the storms that passed through.

More than 70 trees in city parkways were damaged from the Monday storms, with most of the damage coming in late afternoon, said Joliet Public Works Director Jim Trizna.

“We’ve had it worse – a lot worse,” he said. “We’re pretty fortunate compared to what happened to our neighbors to the south.”

relocated, according to Braidwood police.

Three houses and a pole barn in the same area around the Reed Road interchange sustained some damage, said Harold Damron, director of the Will County Emergency Management Agency.

Damron said the Reed Road interchange with I-55 is the only area in Will County believed to be the hit by the same tornado that destroyed homes in Coal City. The damage in Braidwood was lighter.

The Sands Motel sustained roof damage, Damron said.

Braidwood Police Records Clerk Lynda Miner said about 10 people and two dogs were

moved out of the Sands Motel after it sustained damage.

“They were relocated here to our City Hall,” Miner said.

“From there, they went to the United Methodist Church in Coal City.”

The church was being used as a shelter for people displaced by the tornado.

Power lines were knocked down onto I-55, closing lanes in both directions about 10 p.m. in the area of the Reed Road interchange, state police said.

Within the next several minutes, three commercial trucks rolled over on the interstate, state police said. Two of the rollovers were listed as property damage only.

COAL CITY – When Gary Rink and his wife, Diann, emerged from their Coal City basement late Monday night, they knew right away their home had lost its roof.

“We come up and looked at the sky and it was raining on our faces,” Diann Rink said.

The couple’s concrete mailbox was busted. Windows were shattered and the garage – with cars inside – was smashed with concrete blocks pouring out.

The patio was gone and the garage area was laid bare with a fridge and sink visible. Behind the garage was a large pile of rubble – signifying all that was left of the home Gary and his wife had lived in since 2007.

For the second time in less than two years, storm-stricken Coal City residents emerged from the wreckage late Monday faced with a familiar tattered scene: a trail of debris left behind by a tornado in the form of destroyed homes, downed power lines and uprooted trees.

As the sun rose Tuesday, Coal City residents and officials found the damage to be similar to that of the November 2013 storm. That time Coal City was slightly hit by storms, unlike the neighboring town of Diamond that suffered the brunt of it, Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday said.

The tornado that touched down just minutes shy of 10 p.m. Monday in Coal City was a “high-end” EF3 tornado – with winds up to 160 miles per hour, the National Weather Service confirmed. It caused more damage than the storms that glazed over a section of the city and neighboring Diamond in 2013; that was categorized as an EF2, according to Ricky Castro, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Romeoville.

SWOLLEN RIVERS FLOOD ROADS, YARDS

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Tony Borik sat on his front porch Tuesday smoking a cigarette, watching as a makeshift moat formed around his Wilmington home – a sure sign the Kankakee River was taking over his family’s yard for the second time in the 22 years they’ve lived there.

The water had yet to seep into Borik’s sturdy, two-story flagstone home, but the floodwaters were not expected to recede soon following Monday night’s storms that ripped through the region, leaving road, backyards and the nearby Wilmington Island park flooded.

“My wife woke me up at four this morning telling me not to go into work,” said Borik, 48, who shares his home with his wife and 9-year-old daughter.

“It’s one of the worst [flooding events] we’ve had here.”

His wife, Kim Borik, said while flooding can be expected along the river, it’s never welcomed.

“You can’t stop Mother Nature,” she said.

The Borik family was among several Wilmington residents living along the Kankakee River who woke up Tuesday to find backyards transformed into wetlands.

Rainfall late Monday night added to already swollen rivers and ground that has been inundated with rain in the past week. Logs, Styrofoam and other items visible from Borik’s backyard could be seen floating down the Kankakee River. To connect his home to his driveway, Borik created a makeshift bridge using a long piece of wood and a ladder.

Kankakee River levels near Wilmington stood at 8.79 feet as of Tuesday afternoon – nearly two feet higher than observed a week prior. Levels are expected to taper off later in the week, according to National Weather Service. Flood stage is 6.5 feet.

According to the National Weather Service, the highest crest – or highest flood – at the Kankakee River near Wilmington in the past 50 years was 13.88 feet in January 1968. More recently, the highest crest was in September 2008, at 8.68 feet.

The Morris pool continues to be closed because of on-andoff flooding, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

“We’re hoping it doesn’t, but the water is still going to keep coming,” he said.

Kopczick said there is water on some local road, but nothing in Morris is closed off. The city also has had some tree damage throughout, but no major damage from Monday’s storms.

Rivers, parks closed

Local conservation officers are warning residents to stay off the region’s waterways as rivers remain at dangerous levels with floating debris and fast-moving currents.

This time of year is “prime time” for recreational boating, said Sgt. Mark Simon with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. But boaters should

stay off the waterways at all times until water levels recede, he said.

“I know it’s summertime.

But it’s not safe right now,” Simon said.

Because of flooding concerns, conservation officers shut off the Mazon River in Grundy County Tuesday from recreational boating and public access. The Illinois River in Grundy County and the Kankakee River from the Indiana state line to the Kankakee County line was shut off from public access beginning Monday.

Law enforcement are typically out on the waterways monitoring conditions, but it’s too dangerous right now, Simon said.

“When rivers reach this high of stage, we’re not going to put our own law enforcement out there,” Simon said. “When even trained people like ourselves can’t safely navigate, then we have to consider closures.”

All of the preserves are located in the county’s southwestern section, which was hardest hit by the storm.

Conditions will be reassessed Wednesday.

The “Reptiles of the Dunes” program scheduled for Thursday at Braidwood Dunes and Savanna Nature Preserve in Braidwood has also been canceled.

Weather service and law enforcement officials have asked that anyone who encounters a flooded road turn around and find an alternate route.

Emergency crews began a secondary search Tuesday morning in the Coal City area. Lt. Nick Doerfler of the Coal City fire district said that search was completed Tuesday with no new people found.

“Search and rescue operations area complete, mutual aid has all returned home,” Doerfler said Tuesday evening.

The tornado that hit Coal City was one of at least four tornadoes confirmed to have touched down in the Northern Illinois region as the storm took its course Monday night, according to the National Weather Service. A tornado touched down in Lee County also was categorized as a preliminary EF2. The NWS also confirmed an EF1 tornado in Mendota, a “high-end” EF2 with winds up to 130 miles per hour in Sublette, and an EF1 in Harmon.

Gov. Bruce Rauner, in town to see the damage firsthand, declared Grundy County a disaster area while at a news conference about noon Tuesday at Coal City High School. The governor offered state resources – mostly personnel – to affected communities.

He said federal aid is unlikely, but state officials won’t know until the damage is assessed during the next several days.

“Here in Coal City, the devastation has been widespread,” Rauner said. “We want to say thank you to the many volunteers, the state police have been terrific as always, thank you to the mayor here in Coal City. … This is what Illinois is all about: the community coming together and helping each other.”

Estimating the damages

Community coming together

For many, the aftermath in Monday night’s storm was a chance to come together as a community.

In a backyard near where Harrington was working, a group of people were picking up debris with their bare hands.

Harrington said his home wasn’t affected as badly as other neighbors.

With the police managing traffic, he said it’s been tough for him and others trying to get in and out of town.

“I realize they’re trying to keep out lookers, but they’re making it hard on people trying to help,” Harrington said.

The storm left thousands of Northern Illinois residents without power. Coal City, Sterling and Sublette were the hardest hit areas when it came to power outages. As of Tuesday afternoon, about 55,000 residential and commercial customers had lost power, according to ComEd. Of those, 31,000 had been restored.

Based on past storms of a similar magnitude, ComEd officials are estimating that most remaining customers will have service restored by late Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, with some exceptions in the hardest hit areas.

Ed Johnson, who lives on West Willow Street, said debris made roads in neighborhoods hazardous for cars, with one truck passing through Willow Street with a flat tire.

Johnson said unlike the storm two years ago, this storm blanketed Coal City. His wife, Diana, said the lightning was like a strobe light.

“There’s nothing you can do with Mother Nature but hold on and hope you survive,” he said.

As the storms hit Monday night, Coal City resident Nicole Patterson hid in her closet with her family. Afterward, she helped friends and family.

“I can’t believe it. I just know people are suffering. I got my door open. I got power,” she said.

Patterson was outside her mother-in-law, Jane Patterson’s, home Tuesday, sweeping up debris with her sons. Across the yard was a trampoline that had flown from one home to the next across the street. Trees in

JOLIET – Some witnesses agreed Jevon Lesley was the man who fired the shots that killed a bystander July 9, 2011, outside the KO Zone Boxing Club in Joliet.

Others said another man had the gun or gave different descriptions. Some switched between identifying Lesley or not, depending on if they were talking to police or the grand jury.

“It’s dark. The only illumination was the street lights, and we have a lot of people outside,” Assistant Public Defender Jaya Varghese told jurors when Lesley’s murder trial began Tuesday.

Lesley is accused of shooting a handgun outside the club at 218 E. Cass St. and fatally striking Anthony Fearn, 18, who was getting into his car parked around the corner on Arch Court. Police have identified Lesley as a street gang member known as “Guru.”

They maintain Fearn had no gang involvement.

“This is a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong

time,” Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Ashley Kwasneski said.

Jeremy Coates, a friend of Fearn’s, was the first witness to testify Tuesday. Coates said he and Fearn and two other friends had been at the party for about an hour before the club closed down. Fearn had just opened the doors to his minivan when Lesley came to the corner and said, “I got a banger [gun]. Whoever wants it can get it,” according to Coates. Coates said Lesley was wearing a white tank top.

When questioned by police the next day, Coates was shown a photo lineup that did not include Lesley and did not identify anyone. Coates said he did inform police after an acquaintance showed him Lesley’s picture from a “Free Guru” Facebook page and he identified him in court Tuesday. Lesley was arrested on gun charges six months after Fearn was slain.

Shorewood residents speak out against gas station project

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – About 100 residents showed up to Tuesday’s village meeting, mostly in opposition to a proposed gas station and car wash on the southwestern corner of River Road and Route 52.

The Village Board was presented with a petition with more than 500 signatures against the plan to develop a Lenny’s Gas N Wash.

“You want it to be family friendly out here, what about over here [at the intersection],” Hunt Club resident Ruth Gabor asked the board.

“It’ll be dangerous with the curbs for the gas station and trucks. ... With trying to keep trucks off of River Road, this doesn’t work, they’ll go there.”

Residents of the Hunt Club subdivision have been vocal about their opposition to the project because they say it will increase traffic, reduce safety and they also were concerned about the business history of the potential gas station owner, Len McEnery.

packets before the board meeting containing articles of other communities protesting McEnery’s gas station and truck stops.

“There is no reason to see Lenny’s business model have any more success than [his other] models,” resident Lana Jakaitis said.

The plan was presented to trustees and residents with the only major differences being the elimination of two diesel fueling stations that residents had previously rallied against, and a berm that will be built with a fence to separate the project from the subdivision.

Mayor Rick Chapman said the project will be up for vote during a July 14 meeting.

Residents have issues with the gas station potentially inviting crime, lowering property values, obstructing walking and biking paths, inviting video gambling and setting a precedent for gas stations to be built in a B-3 general commercial district.

Public opposition

The gas station project caught fire with residents

shortly before a planning and zoning meeting June 3. They also were concerned about increased truck traffic through two diesel fueling stations on the south side of the development.

The commission voted 7-1 to approve the plan, including the two diesel stations.

Then, news of the decision spread through the subdivision. Dozens of residents ended up protesting the project at the intersection June 7.

Mayor Rick Chapman heard the residents’ concerns and worked with McEnery on removing the two diesel stations, although one diesel station still remained for utility vehicles among others.

But he still defended the plan several times during public comment.

Chapman also defended accusations that the village hadn’t been forthright about the project.

“It has been in the newspapers, the media for at least a year,” Chapman said. He also thanked residents for speaking up about the project.

The meeting still was in session as of press time.

Church wants to buy Joliet playground

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A church wants to buy the Benton Street Playground in Joliet – but it won’t be easy.

The playground is part of the Joliet Park District, which has begun discussions with Pastor Refugio Ramirez.

Ramirez said his church, Iglesia Pentecostal Cristo es la Roca, needs to expand to make room for more members. The Benton Street Playground, located next door at Benton Street and Youngs Avenue, would provide the parking the church needs.

Two problems: The church does not have enough money to buy the park without a payment plan, and the park district cannot sell property without showing it is not needed.

Park Board President Glen Marcum said the park district by law cannot sell property on a payment plan.

The park board heard from Ramirez at its board meeting on Monday. Park District Executive Director Dominic Egizio is to meet with Ramirez in July to discuss the matter.

Ramirez said the church has gone to the city with its plans for expansion and has been told it will have to add parking to accommodate more members.

The church now has about 120 members, Ramirez said.

By JEANNE MILLSAP CHANNAHON – State Sen. Pat McGuire dropped by the District 17 school board meeting Monday to congratulate Superintendent Karin Evans on her upcoming retirement and thank her for her service.

McGuire, D-Joliet, presented Evans with a certificate of Senate Recognition from the 99th General Assembly on behalf of himself and Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield.

McGuire said Evans has done an outstanding job for the Channahon district, even through “stiff challenges with decreases in state aid and a decreasing EAV that eats away at the tax base.” Monday was Evans’ last board meeting as she retires at the end of the month.

Later in the meeting, school board members wished Evans well and new Superintendent Nick Henkle was presented with a pair of Evans’ shoes by board member Joan Ferguson, representing the shoes he will have to fill in his position.

Years before, when Ferguson was principal of N.B. Galloway School, she made a similar presentation, giving new Superintendent Richard Dombrowski a pair of Norval B. Galloway’s shoes to symbolically fill.

In district business, the board approved its fiscal 2016 tentative budget. Revenues are likely to be 0.4 percent down from this year, Finance Director Mike Schroeder said. The two big expenditures will be a technology upgrade of re-wiring all four schools and installing a new HVAC system in Three Rivers School.

Those projects together with

architectural designs for the cafeteria/multi-purpose room at N.B. Galloway will raise the Operations and Maintenance Fund expenditures by 21.2 percent, Schroeder said. Without the projects, the fund’s expenditures would have gone down by 10 percent.

The Education Fund’s expenditures will be up a bit, Schroeder said, because of the technology upgrades. But the IMRF Fund expenditures will be down after the board instituted unfunded liability measures earlier this year.

NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Village Board will reconsider a controversial plan for downtown apartments.

A special meeting has been scheduled for 7 p.m. July 8 to hear a revised proposal from New Lenox Development Company LLC. The company wants to develop a four-building, 312unit, campus-style apartment complex on 16 acres near the Metra Station off Route 30.

No action will be taken that night and the board likely will vote on the measure at its July 27 meeting, Mayor Tim Baldermann said at Monday’s board meeting.

The plan was brought to the board last fall but put on hold because of concerns about traffic, aesthetics and building materials.

Many residents had voiced opposition to the complex at the time. But Baldermann said there were “rumors and bad information out there.”

The mayor and village trustees encouraged residents to come to the July 8 meeting and then voice their opinions based on the actual details of the plan.

“We are a representative democracy … but we are not mind readers,” said Trustee David Smith. “Please come out and tell us what you think.”

Baldermann emphasized later that the board “has not made up its mind” but it is allowing the developer to come back and outline the changes.

Revenue from the gambling machines would be used to make improvements at the golf course, Lewis said later. Improvements for the clubhouse roof, the bunkers, the car pass and the practice area will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, he said.

The park district will get 35 percent of the proceeds, which is estimated at about $68,000 a year, Lewis said. The gaming company will also receive 35 percent, the state will receive 25 percent and the village will receive 5 percent, according to Illinois gaming

The board also discussed ongoing problems with water damaging parts of the junior high’s terrazzo flooring. Some of the flooring in the northwest hallway leading to the gymnasium was replaced last year and more effective vapor barriers were added to prevent water from coming up and damaging the floor.

But more delamination has been noticed this year. About 120 square feet of terrazzo need replacement now, Schroeder said. The board approved a $12,160 contract with Menconi Terrazzo for replacement and sealing.

The school board scheduled a work-study session at 5 p.m.

OBITUARIES ALBERT R. AGNICH SR. Albert R. Agnich Sr., “Ron” “The Boss”, age 70 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 21, 2015, at the University of Chicago Medical Center with his loving wife by his side.

Ron was employed by ComEd for 33 years, then by MJ Electric for 8 years and lastly by Sargent & Lundy for 1 year.

Member of Ceco, Northwest Recreation Club, Channahon Baseball League and he was a Troop Leader for Pack 444. He had an avid interest in racing and restoring old cars. Ron enjoyed “helping” Santa Claus at Christmastime.

Preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Margaret (nee Remko) Agnich; and a sister, Nancy (late, Tony) Vallera.

Survived by his loving wife of 52½ years, Bonnie Lou (nee Hagmayer); four children, Albert R. “Ronnie” (Nina) Agnich Jr., Jan Marie Agnich, Rebecca McAsey and Jodi (Pete Tepler, fiancée) Ballman; four grandchildren, Ashley Michele, Savannah Jane, Maggie Agnich and Noah Agnich; two sisters, Shirley (Don) Alexander and Barbara (Terry) Piazza; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Preceded in death by his parents; and son, Joseph.

He fought a long battle with kidney failure and his family would like to give a special thanks to his many caregivers. He is greatly loved and will truly be missed.

SISTER MARILYN FRANZE, OSF Sister Marilyn (Jean) Franze, OSF (Jacinta), 1932 – 2015, died at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Joliet, Illinois on June 21, 2015.

Sister Marilyn Franze, a native of Joliet, Illinois, was the second child born to Pearl and Charles Franze.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister-in-law, Margaret (Ancel) Franze; and her nephew, Charles Jr. She is survived by her older brother, Charles; and her niece, Marjean Franze.

Sister Marilyn was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 64 years. Sister Marilyn attended Sheridan Grade School and graduated from St. John Parish School in Joliet.

She attended St. Francis Academy before entering the Sisters of St. Francis.

Sister Marilyn was received as a

novice in the Sisters of St. Francis on August 12, 1951. After professing her vows as a religious in 1953, Sister Marilyn served the Sisters on various missions in Alabama, Illinois and Ohio ministering in the area of culinary arts.

In January 1962, when Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home opened its doors, Sister Marilyn was there to greet the Sisters and serve them.

She did this in a variety of ministries besides her position in food service for over 50 years. Her smile, her love and devotion to everyone, resident or visitor, was the hallmark of her gracious service. While Sister “retired” from the staff of Our Lady of Angels, she did not cease in her service to all.

She has completed over 8000 hours of volunteer service.

BOSTON – Don Featherstone was a classically trained painter, a talented sculptor and artist who became famous for creating the pink plastic lawn flamingo – the ultimate piece of American suburban kitsch.

And it didn’t bother him a bit.

Featherstone, who died Monday at 79, embraced the fame the invention brought him.

He died at an elder care facility in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, after a long battle with Lewy body dementia, his wife of 40 years, Nancy, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

“He was the nicest guy in the world,” Nancy Featherstone said. “He didn’t have a selfish bone in his body. He was funny and had a wonderful sense of humor and he made me so happy for 40 years.”

Featherstone, who studied art at the Worcester Art Museum, created the ornamental flamingo in 1957 for plastics company Union Products Inc., of Leominster, modeling it after photos of the birds he saw in National Geographic.

Featherstone worked at Union for 43 years, inventing hundreds of products in that time and rising to the position of president before his retirement in 1999.

“People say they’re tacky, but all great art began as tacky,” Featherstone said in a 1997 interview.

He was forever humble about the flamingo, and in fact, his wife often brought it up in conversations with people they would meet, bringing a sheepish smile from her husband, she said.

“Humble” is how Marc Abrahams, editor the Annals of Improbable Research magazine, remembers Featherstone.

The magazine hands out an annual spoof on the Nobel Prizes known as the Ig Nobels. Abrahams became good friends with Featherstone after he won the Ig Nobel for art in 1996.

Featherstone kept his real artistic talent under wraps to everyone except those closest to him, Abrahams said.

“He decided it would destroy the illusion and pleasure for people who knew him for the flamingo, so he only let those very close to him see his work,” he said.

TAOS, N.M. – A former White House chef for Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush drowned in a New Mexico mountain stream, and his death was ruled an accident, authorities said Tuesday.

The determination followed several days of mystery about the death of Walter Scheib, who vanished during a solo hike in the mountains of northern New Mexico and was found dead Sunday night after a weeklong search.

There was no sign of foul play, State Police Sgt. Elizabeth Armijo said. Scheib recently moved from Florida to Taos.

He was 61.

Scheib’s girlfriend reported him missing after he failed to return from a June 13 hike in the mountains near the Taos Ski Valley. Three days later, Taos police found Scheib’s vehicle at the Yerba Canyon trailhead. The 4-mile trail follows a canyon bottom before climbing to 3,700 feet in elevation.

As the search progressed, state police exhausted all resources, from the National Guard to the U.S. Air Force.

Scheib was known for refocusing the White House kitchen on distinctly American cuisine with seasonal ingredients and contemporary flavors. He was responsible for preparing everything from First Family meals to formal State Dinners. Both presidential families said Monday they were saddened by his tragic death.

A graduate of New York’s Culinary Institute of America in 1979, Scheib went on to work at grand hotels in Florida and West Virginia before becoming White House executive chef in 1994.

Scheib left the White House in 2005. He became a food consultant and speaker.

House defeats delay in Chicago schools’ pension payment

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois House has turned back a plea from the Chicago Public Schools for more time before making a pension payment of more than $600 million due by Tuesday.

The cash-strapped school district – the third-largest in the nation – wanted 40 days to figure out a way to meet the giant contribution without making deep educational cuts.

It failed, 53-46, falling seven votes short of the number necessary.

Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie – a Chicago Democrat – said the legislation would delay the payment until after summer revenues arrive and give school officials a chance to come up with an alternative financial plan.

Interim schools CEO Jesse Ruiz told lawmakers drastic schoolroom cuts could be necessary without a delay.

Former state health official gets eight years for kickbacks

SPRINGFIELD – A former Illinois Department of Public Health aide has been sentenced to eight years in prison for her part in a kickback scheme that defrauded the state of millions of dollars.

Quinshaunta Golden pleaded guilty in April 2014 to bribery, theft and obstruction of justice in the kickback scheme. She was accused of issuing more than $11 million in falsified grants in exchange for kickbacks.

In addition to prison time, U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough ordered Golden to pay $1 million in restitution and serve three years of supervised release after her release from prison.

Caterpillar to lay off 50 more workers at East Peoria plant

PEORIA – Caterpillar Inc. said it will lay off 50 more workers at its East Peoria plant in addition to the 120 layoffs announced last week.

Company spokeswoman Lisa Miller said all 170 layoffs will be effective Monday and are the result of “weak market conditions.” She said Caterpillar plans to offer support services to the impacted employees.

The announcement, made

Monday, marks the third round of layoffs this year at the plant in East Peoria. An additional 120 workers were laid off in January.

The Peoria Journal Star reported Caterpillar announced in May it would lay off 150 workers at its Decatur plant due to weak demand for the mining equipment manufactured there.

Appellate court keeps alive Planned Parenthood case

CHICAGO – An Illinois appellate court has ruled a lower court made a mistake when it dismissed a lawsuit challenging the opening of an Aurora Planned Parenthood facility, keeping alive an 8-year-old dispute.

The 2nd District Appellate Court’s ruling Friday sends the case back to DuPage County

Circuit Court for reconsideration of whether the Planned Parenthood clinic violates zoning law in Aurora.

But the appeals court said questions of whether Planned Parenthood misled city officials are irrelevant, despite the plaintiffs’ claims.

“The issue is whether Planned Parenthood’s ongoing use of the property violates the [zoning ordinance] because it does not fall within the approved use as a medical office building or clinic.”

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of local residents by the Thomas More Society, a not-for-profit law firm focused on anti-abortion and religious causes. The organization called the ruling a victory and said the city’s zoning code requires the site to be used only by for-profit businesses.

Planned Parenthood operates as a not-for-profit organization.

National Guard unit headed to Texas for border work

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois National Guard said a group of its aviators and aircraft mechanics soon will head to the U.S. border with Mexico.

The National Guard said more than 20 soldiers from Company B of the 376th Aviation Regiment’s 1st Battalion in Decatur are expected to spend six months along the border in Texas.

They will work with federal agents as part of what is called Operation Phalanx II, which is aimed at drug smuggling and human trafficking along a 200mile stretch of the border.

The federal government, which holds secrets and sensitive information ranging from nuclear blueprints to the tax returns of hundreds of millions of Americans, has for years failed to take basic steps to protect its data from hackers and thieves, records show.

In the latest example, the Office of Personnel Management is under fire for letting its databases be plundered by suspected Chinese cyberspies in what is being called one of the worst breaches in U.S. history. OPM repeatedly neglected to implement basic cybersecurity protections, its internal watchdog told Congress.

New DNA buoys searchers for escaped inmates

BELLMONT, N.Y. – Hundreds of searchers spurred on by fresh evidence methodically combed through heavy woods in far northern New York on Tuesday hoping to finally close in on two elusive murderers who escaped from a maximum-security prison more than two weeks ago.

Authorities began committing heavy resources to the remote woods days ago after leads from a hunting camp that was apparently broken into led to “good evidence, DNA data” regarding inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Roadblocks were in place Tuesday around the remote hamlets of Owls Head and Mountain View in an area of rugged terrain about 20 miles west of Clinton County Correctional Facility.

S.C. lawmakers overwhelmingly vote to debate Confederate flag

By SEANNA ADCOX, JEFFREY COLLINS and JONATHAN DREW The Associated Press COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina lawmakers voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to consider removing the Confederate battle flag from their Statehouse grounds as politicians took aim at Civil Warera symbols in other states, saying change is imperative after police said nine black churchgoers were slain in a hate crime.

Prodded by Gov. Nikki Haley’s call the day before to move the flag to a museum, lawmakers approved a measure enabling a flag debate by a vote of 103-10 in the House and a voice vote in the Senate.

Very few lawmakers rose to say the flag should stay, although some said they were saving speeches for what promises to be an emotional debate later this summer.

Haley’s unexpected reversal – quickly seconded by leading Republicans – gave others the political opening to announce their moves.

Many cited the church slayings as they abandoned the long-held position that even debating the status of the flag would be too racially divisive today.

Dylann Storm Roof, who faces murder and gun charges in the church attack, had posed in photos displaying Confederate flags and burning or desecrating U.S. flags, and told a friend that he was planning to do something “for the white race.”

Once South Carolina took action, other states moved quickly.

Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn called for removing the Confederate emblem from the state flag. Both Democrats and Republicans in Tennessee said a bust of Confederate general and Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest must go from the Senate. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe wants vanity license plates depicting the Confederate flag replaced.

McConnell joined Kentucky’s Republican nominee for governor, Matt Bevin, in calling for the removal of a statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis from their state Capitol’s rotunda.

Big businesses also took action: Wal-Mart, eBay and Sears Holding Corp. announced they would no longer sell merchandise featuring the Confederate flag, which eBay called a “contemporary symbol of divisiveness and racism.”

The first South Carolina senator to take the floor and call for moving the flag to a museum was Paul Thurmond, the son of the state’s most powerful politician of the last century, U.S. senator and segregationist standard-bearer Strom Thurmond, whose statue stands on the side of the Statehouse opposite the Confederate flag, striding confidently southward.

Winds cannot sweep away generosity of community Mother Nature can be cruel in her unbiased ferocity when she chooses to unleash it.

We’ve been here before: The physical structures of a community torn apart because of powerful winds brought by a tornado. It was only November 2013 when Diamond was hit by an EF-2 tornado that left more than 220 homes and businesses damaged and several people injured.

Monday night, another tornado stormed into the area and hit Coal City, right next to the area hit just a year and a half ago. It was classified preliminarily Tuesday as an EF-2 tornado, which means it packed winds of up to 135 mph. It also caused damage in Braidwood and Carbon Hill.

There’s also the possibility of tornadic damage near Mazon, and in Kankakee County near Bourbonnais.

The images were painfully

familiar. Roofs torn off. Power lines down. Recovery efforts – including looking for people possibly trapped in structures – done in the dark. Roads closed because of debris or water. Five people were taken to local hospitals with injuries – thankfully, no fatalities were reported. Grundy County again was declared a state disaster area after Gov. Bruce Rauner visited.

Also familiar was the reaction of our communities. As soon as the winds died down, even with rain pouring down, people came to help.

Emergency crews from 36 agencies responded to a call for mutual aid. Neighbors came out of wherever they sought shelter and offered to dig through debris to help those hit hardest. Those not directly affected by the storm immediately started asking how they could help.

Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc, who had to deal with a

tornado recovery of her own in 2013, said Coal City helped Diamond out in its time of need, and Diamond will do the same.

“We’re a tight-knit, strong community, all of the municipalities in this area,” Kernc said. “[Coal City was] here every day. And we’ll be here, too.”

We know cleanup will take months. We realize homes can be rebuilt, but the loss of so much is devastating for residents who no longer may have a roof over their heads.

But it is the attitude so perfectly expressed by Kernc that is being exhibited again by thousands in our area that defines our communities.

Headed for a legislative showdown in Springfield SPRINGFIELD – At the supper table the other night, my 9-year-old daughter, Grace, gave me a sad look and said, “Why are they closing the museum?”

She and her two sisters love to visit the Illinois State Museum in Springfield and look at the collections of butterflies, reptiles and the other flora and fauna of the Prairie State.

It’s a fun, free thing to do during their summer break.

But the museum will close July 1 unless a state budget deal is reached before then.

I’m not holding my breath.

My best guess is Illinois is in for a long, hard slog with Gov. Bruce Rauner and legislative Democrats at loggerheads.

Rauner says he won’t support a tax hike until Illinois adopts fundamental political and economic reforms.

And legislative Democrats are finding Rauner’s “tough medicine” hard to swallow.

Some of the reforms Rauner has called for include: • Changing workers’ compensation rules to reduce the cost for employers to provide the mandatory coverage for employees.

• Place a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would eliminate political gerrymandering.

• Allow voters to decide another constitutional amendment that would create term limits for state lawmakers.

• Freezing property taxes statewide and only allowing in-

Not surprisingly, these ideas are about as popular as tooth decay among the majority Democrats in both chambers.

Cullerton said last week, “Workers’ comp is not an economic development tool.”

Huh? I routinely talk to employers, and it’s rare indeed for one not to say the state has a major workers’ comp problem. All of our neighboring states are much less costly for employers.

Manufacturers in the Chicago area are migrating to Indiana and Wisconsin from the

Land of Lincoln, and they’re citing workers’ compensation as a major factor.

But labor unions and trial lawyers like the system the way it is, and legislative Democrats are reluctant to cross these major campaign contributors.

And high property taxes are driving not only businesses but also ordinary residents from the Prairie State.

When it comes to the constitutional amendments, Madigan and Cullerton view them as a threat to their power.

Legislative districts are drawn to protect incumbents; in most districts, voters have little to no choice on the ballot.

Instead of voters choosing their legislators, lawmakers are choosing their voters.

And Madigan, who has been in the Legislature since

1971, for some reason doesn’t like term limits.

That leaves us in a spot.

Neither Madigan, Cullerton or Rauner appear ready to budge. And they have passed budgets that are $3 billion to $4 billion out whack.

Cuts appear inevitable.

Rauner has unveiled more than $800 million in temporary cuts that will begin if a budget deal isn’t reached by July 1.

One of the casualties would be the Illinois State Museum.

But it will be one of a multitude sacrifices Illinoisans will face this summer.

Let’s hope the sacrifices lead to a stronger, healthier state.

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Lockport football coach Dan Starkey sees a big difference in every phase of the Porters’ program.

Coming off a 3-6 record in his initial season at the helm, Starkey is excited about the upcoming season.

“The kids are more confident, they know the language and expectations,” Starkey said at the University of St. Francis’ recent 7-on-7 at Memorial Stadium.

“You can see it in all phases. It’s tough the first year of a new coach because everyone is learning. New players for the coaches and a new system and language for the players. They have done a good job of raising the level.”

With the graduation of last season’s quarterback, Jeremy Quade, the Porters need to find a replacement. Two are vying for the starting position, with a possible third in the mix.

Senior Deiondre Taylor, who saw playing time at the position last year, and junior Ben Davis are the two who took all the throws at the 7-on7.

“I’m ready to play the position,” Taylor said. “Whatever this team needs, I’ll be ready to contribute. This summer is a learning experience, learn our system on the next level and get better. We are looking very good in practice, and we are way ahead of last year.”

Taylor can play multiple positions. Besides quarterback, he can be a slot receiver, a running back and play defensive back.

Davis, who played as a freshman but not as a sophomore, is back after playing basketball and baseball.

“I love to play football, and I’m out here to try and win the position,” he said.

“I’m getting great experience with practice and these 7-on7s. The team is working hard and progressing very well.”

The third player in the mix is junior Patrick Cooper. He was the starting quarterback on the sophomore team but has moved to receiver on the varsity.

“Everything has been going really well,” Cooper said.

“I’m just shaking off a little rust and getting used to the receiver position again. I played receiver as a freshman but moved to quarterback last year. The biggest difference from the sophomore team to the varsity is the speed and

the physical nature of the game. It’s definitely a higher level.”

“Deiondre will have a package at quarterback for every game. He is so versatile, we have to have him on the field,” Starkey said.

“Ben is young and is making great progress. Both De-

iondre and Ben will play. This may not be a one-quarterback team. Patrick [Cooper] will get some reps at quarterback over the summer. He had a very good year as a sophomore, is a very good athlete and can help us in various positions.”

With a new quarterback throwing the ball, the Porters’ receivers will also play a big role.

Lockport’s receiver coach, Adam DeCaire – a receiver on the back-to-back state title teams – likes what he sees in the players who will be catching the ball.

“As an overall group, this is one of the most talented group of receivers I have seen since 2010,” DeCaire said.

“They have good hands, have some size and really catch the ball well with their hands.”

Besides Cooper on the outside, senior Brandon Credit will play a key role as a receiver.

“I’m really enjoying my role this year,” Credit said.

“We have a good group of players who go get the ball.

I really see a big difference in the commitment this year from the players. There is a lot of potential on this team.

We have one goal – playoffs.”

Another junior receiver who will be counted on, Josh Baker, has been sidelined with a broken hand. Baker broke his hand playing baseball for the Porters.

The Porters are excited about scoring points on the offensive side and need the defense to step up and play well in key situations.

“I really like what I saw out of our team [at the 7-on-7] on both sides of the ball,” Starkey said. “Very good character – that is what we want. The juniors handled themselves very well. That is a big step coming up to the varsity level from the sophomores.

“The attitude is very good, everyone is gaining confidence, working hard and getting better.”

COAL CITY TORNADO AFTERMATH

COAL CITY – Coal City High School underwent a major expansion in 2010. Along with adding a new gymnasium, cafeteria and auditorium to the existing school, the athletic complex was renovated as well. New soccer and softball fields were put in, as well as upgrades to the existing tennis courts, football field and baseball diamond.

In the span of a few moments Monday night, the masterpiece that was the Dzuris Athletic Complex was reduced to a blank canvas.

The tornado that hit Coal City seemed to have a particular distaste for press boxes.

Those at the soccer field, baseball field and softball field all were destroyed, their remains strewn among the other debris on-site.

Fences didn’t fare much better, as a bulk of the fences that once surrounded the baseball and softball fields are a memory now.

The bleachers at the baseball field look as if they would be right at home in a Salvador Dali painting; plus, one section of bleachers from the softball field was blown about100 feet into the parking lot, and another ended up in the retention pond of the neighboring subdivision. The dugout on the first base line at the baseball field, although a solid cinder block structure, had only one wall remaining.

The football field had just had a new scoreboard installed, but that is a twisted shell. Just before last season started, a sign commemorating all of the Coalers’ past playoff appearances was put up next to the scoreboard. It’s gone.

All of this, however, is secondary. The focus of concern lies with Coal City’s residents.

“I rode through town last night, but it was dark, so I didn’t really see much,” Coal City athletic director Dan Hutchings said. “I really have no valid information, but I know that a lot of stuff on the west side of the campus is destroyed. Right now,

That is particularly the case for the Coal City boys basketball team, which was scheduled to take part in the Morris Shootout starting

Wednesday morning.

“We are not coming to the Morris Shootout,” Coal City basketball coach Brad Boresi said. “I actually was contacted

by Joe Blumberg, the Morris basketball coach, right away this morning, and he told me he understood if we didn’t

come. We had three or four players whose homes were damaged. I think this is the right decision. The guys can do more here than they can playing five basketball games in two days in Morris.

“You can also look at it like maybe we should take them out of here for a couple of days and let them go do something they like to do.

But I took a bike ride around town and saw two of my players, whose houses weren’t damaged, helping out people whose houses were damaged.

Especially with more rain in the forecast, our guys helping out others will probably do more for team bonding than five summer basketball games will do.”

Although most of the damage was limited to the surrounding structures, the high school itself sustained some as well.

“The south gym has some holes in the roof,” Coal City

Principal Mitch Hamann said.

“We are getting some water leaking onto the floor in there.

About 90 percent of the fences at the baseball and softball fields are destroyed. We had just put in a new four-seasons room out by the football field.

Most of the windows in that were blown out, but the structure is fine.”

Carrie Onsen, the wife of Coal City football coach Lenny Onsen, might have said it best.

“The new scoreboard at the football field is gone, the new playoff board is demolished,” she said as her husband was out helping others clean up.

“The football trailer that gets taken to away games was blown away. The dugouts and press boxes from the baseball and softball fields are gone.

Some of the bleachers from the softball field are in the retention pond at the neighborhood to the south.

“It’s a mess.”

Plainfield South finds summer strength in numbers

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Wins and losses aren’t the only numbers that indicate Plainfield South’s girls basketball program is on the upswing.

Amid personal schedules and other conflicts that can be an issue for summertime participation, Plainfield South brought 14 players to the first day of the Morris Ladies Shootout last week.

South didn’t win the event, nor was it expected to contend for the title, but that’s not the point for the improving Cougars.

“What was really great was we brought so many of our players,” assistant coach Jackie Burke said. “We had some who are going to be incoming freshmen. We had some who are going to be seniors, so we

had a range. We had every level out there.

“That’s something I was really proud of them, the way we put so many teams into one. They were able to work well together. That’s a really big benefit. Our program has been improving year to year, and that’s because we have the relationships with all the levels. This is a big help in our goals.”

South went from winning three games three years ago to seven victories in the 2013-14 season. That prompted a challenge from coach Leah Carter for last season.

“We had a bet with our coach to see if we could win up to 12 games,” senior post player Antwanetta Boswell said.

“We won 12, and she dyed her hair blue.”

“Carter is really good at setting goals with them,” Burke

“Kind of helping [new players] along, and making sure they learn the ropes, makes for a better season coming up.”

Jaianna Brooks Plainfield South junior said. “She’s like, ‘We’re not going to go into the season and not have things that we want to accomplish.’

“I think that’s one of the biggest things, that they did accomplish so many of their goals last year, that it’s only going to lead us to more improvement this year. They took great strides last year.”

Summer shootout events, such as the one at Morris, are an early step toward making

progress in the future. The Cougars are working on skills that include getting downcourt on defense along with reading and reacting more quickly to rebounds.

With starters Tyler Everett and Kaylin Doran graduating, Boswell, senior Alyssa Fink and junior Jaianna Brooks – all returning starters – will be counted on even more next season to blend with the newcomers.

“Working well with the new members of the team, getting to know them, they get to know me,” Boswell said of her offseason goals.

“I’ve got to get better on my shots a little so I can start taking more shots in the games, hustling a little harder.”

Brooks, the returning point guard, also pointed out the need for developing teamwork before a new season is here.

“We’re going to work on working with each other, make sure we all know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, because that’s what makes our game,” Brooks said.

“Winning is confidence.

Once you win one game, you want to play harder than you did before.”

South expects key contributions next season from returning varsity player Emily Petraski, as well as from Ayana Green, Vivica Phillips and Madison Harris.

“We get a lot of new players during the summer,” Brooks said. “Kind of helping them along, and making sure they learn the ropes, makes for a better season coming up.

“We build a bond, a chemistry. That way, we all learn each other’s strengths, and we know how to play with each other.”

Altmann signs with Rangers:

Josh Altmann (Lockport), an infielder at Olivet Nazarene, signed a contract to play for the Texas Rangers organization after being drafted in the

22nd round of this year’s MLB draft. Altmann has reported to the Arizona Rangers, the Rangers’ rookie affiliate in Surprise, Arizona.

In Altmann’s junior season as a Tiger, he batted .432, finishing eighth in batting average and 38th in slugging percentage in the NAIA. He started all 50 games, played every infield position and was named to the All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference team for a second time.

After three years as a Tiger, Altmann ranks fifth all-time in batting average (.386) with 174 hits, has a .499 slugging percentage and a .479 on-base percentage and 62 stolen bases.

By MARK LONG The Associated Press Confederate flags are as easy to find at NASCAR races as cutoff jeans, cowboy hats and beer.

They fly over motorhomes.

They adorn clothing. They are regular fixtures, just like Ford and Chevrolet, and that is unlikely to change any time soon.

NASCAR probably would like to see them go away.

The sanctioning body for the motorsports series backed South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s call to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds in the wake of the Charleston church massacre.

NASCAR issued its statement Tuesday, the same day South Carolina lawmakers agreed to discuss removing the flag and one day after Haley said “the time has come” to take it down.

And that is as far as NASCAR appears willing to go for now.

“As our industry works collectively to ensure that all fans are welcome at our races, NASCAR will continue our long-standing policy to disallow the use of the Confederate flag symbol in any official NASCAR capacity,” NASCAR said. “While NASCAR recognizes that freedom of expression is an inherent right of all citizens, we will continue to strive for an inclusive environment at our events.”

“We join NASCAR in support of South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley’s position on the Confederate flag,” ISC President John Saunders said in a statement. “ISC strives to ensure all fans are welcome to enjoy our events and maintains an inclusive environment at our facilities nationwide. ISC will continue our long-standing practice to prohibit the sale of Confederate flag material on our property.”

Saunders declined a request by The Associated Press for further comment. Other tracks did not respond to requests for comment.

Nine people were slain last week at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church,

and Dylann Storm Roof, 21, is charged with murder. The white man appeared in photos holding Confederate flags and burning or desecrating U.S. flags, and purportedly wrote of fomenting racial violence.

Big retailers such as WalMart, Amazon, Sears, eBay and Etsy all said they would remove Confederate merchandise from their stores or websites, and politicians across the South called for various steps to move away from the symbol that many associate with racism.

NASCAR has faced criticism over the years for various issues, often involving sponsors. A decade ago, there were questions when hard liquor companies emerged as potential sponsors for a sport built around fast cars and a series whose founding in 1948 gave ex-moonshiners a place to race. More recently, the National Rifle Association drew attention when it struck a sponsorship deal with Texas Motor Speedway not long after the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

Confederate flags have been flown by fans at NASCAR races through all of that. For NASCAR’s Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, a 2½-hour drive north of Charleston, a Confederate flag theme was part of poster merchandise from the 1950s into the late ’70s.

NEW YORK – After a 10hour hearing, Tom Brady must wait to find out if his appeal of a four-game suspension carried any weight with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Brady was suspended by the league for his role in the use of deflated footballs in the AFC championship game win over Indianapolis. He arrived at the NFL’s Park Avenue offices Tuesday morning, as did attorney Jeffrey Kessler, who is leading Brady’s defense.

It was growing dark when Goodell left the league headquarters after he heard Brady and representatives from the players’ union during the lengthy meeting. Officials said Brady also had left.

No details of the hearing were immediately available.

“I think we put in a very compelling case,” Kessler said, adding that no timetable on a decision by Goodell had been given.

Kessler said he would have no further comments Tuesday night, and neither the union nor the league immediately commented.

This was the latest step in the protracted “Deflategate” scandal, and no decisions were expected Tuesday.

Indeed, it is uncertain how soon Goodell will an-

nounce anything; he could decide to keep the suspension as it is, reduce it or completely wipe it clean.

With training camps set to open in five weeks, the commissioner has some time to consider the evidence presented at the hearing. But the Patriots also can’t finalize training camp practice plans for the quarterback position until they know Brady’s availability for the 2015 season.

Should Goodell keep the four-game ban – or even if he reduces it but doesn’t dismiss it totally – Brady could go to court. That could delay any solution for months.

As Goodell was hearing a myriad of testimonies Tuesday, Brady supporters were outside, some wearing “Free Brady” T-shirts. At least until the rains came, that is.

Some reporters joked that the meeting lasted so long because a summer storm was hitting the city and no one wanted to leave the building in such weather.

But just past 7:30 p.m., the principals left.

The NFL Players Association had asked Goodell to recuse himself from hearing the appeal because he could not be impartial and might be called as a witness. But Goodell said it was his responsibility to oversee the hearing to protect the integrity of the league.

Samardzija, Sox top Twins; Cubs get 4th straight victory The ASSOCIATED PRESS MINNEAPOLIS – Jeff Samardzija struck out seven batters in seven innings for just his second win in nine starts on the road this season, and the White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins, 6-2, Tuesday to snap a seven-game losing streak away from U.S. Cellular Field.

Geovany Soto had two RBI singles and Melky Cabrera drove in the go-ahead run on a two-out single seventh to give Samardzija (5-4) the victory, sending Twins starter Mike Pelfrey (5-4) to his first loss in seven starts at home this year.

Jose Abreu had a career-high four hits for the Sox, who stopped another dubious slide by topping three runs for the first time in 10 games. That was their longest such run since 1976.

The time to succeed against Samardzija is in the first inning, when the right-hander has allowed 19 runs, the most in the majors, in 15 starts. Eddie Rosario added to the total with a homer, but Torii Hunter grounded into a double play with two runners on to ruin that rally.

Hunter was hit by a twoout pitch in the fourth inning, advanced on Eduardo Nunez’s infield single and scored on Kurt Suzuki’s double to give the Twins a 2-1 lead, but Nunez was out easily trying to score from first on sharp throws

from Cabrera in left field and Alexei Ramirez at shortstop.

Suzuki had another chance, with two on and two out in the sixth, but he grounded out.

Samardzija gave up eight of his majors-most 118 hits allowed and walked one. He won for the first time in six starts since May 22, which was also against the Twins. Samardzija was 0-2 with a 6.84 ERA in his first four starts in June.

The Sox also ended a sixgame losing streak at Target Field during which they were outscored, 55-14.

Pelfrey’s ERA at home this season is still a sparkling 1.80.

He allowed 10 hits, three runs and three walks in 62⁄3 innings, but Cabrera’s sharp single on a 1-0 sinker made his night look less impressive.

Soto is 6 for 11 in his career against Pelfrey.

Abreu is batting .337 in his last 25 games.

The Sox had more than two hits with runners in scoring position for the first time in 19 games. They went 5 for 16 in those situations in this one.

Cubs overcome Dodgers in 10 innings; Motte gets win

CHICAGO – Chris Denorfia hit a game-ending sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 1-0, on Tuesday night for their fourth consecutive victory.

The Cubs loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th on two

singles and a walk. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly then replaced Joel Peralta (1-1) with Kenley Jansen and brought the infield in.

Los Angeles got one out when Addison Russell bounced into a fielder’s choice, with first baseman Adrian Gonzalez juggling the ball before making a strong throw to the plate. But Denorfia followed with a line drive to center that Joc Pederson brought in on the run, giving him no chance of making a play.

Jason Motte (5-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win, finishing a three-hitter for Jason Hammel and three relievers.

Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke allowed three hits and walked two in six innings while extending his scoreless streak to 13 frames. The righthander is 0-2 in his last nine starts despite a 1.79 ERA over that stretch.

The Cubs nearly got to Greinke in the first, putting runners on second and third with two outs. But Starlin Castro flied out to right to end the inning.

Hammel allowed two hits in 72⁄3 innings, and one of them was a gift triple for Yasiel Puig in the sixth that was lost in the night sky by outfielders Matt Szczur and Mike Baxter. Hammel then got Pederson to pop out to shortstop, ending the threat.

Raspberry-Rhubarb Cream Pie With Oatmeal Crust

A

basic strawberry rhubarb pie is a delightful and iconic part of summer, but why let it rest at that?

This summer, we decided to crank it up and take this pie to a whole new level. We started by ditching the usual cooked strawberries in favor of fresh raspberries. The raspberries get arranged over a simple but deliciously tart-sweet rhubarb compote. And we didn’t stop there.

We layered all of that over a vanilla pudding, giving us the best of two worlds – fruit pie and cream pie.

How to improve on strawberry-rhubarb pie Raspberry-Rhubarb Cream Pie With Oatmeal Crust Start to finish: 3 hours (1 hour active) Servings: 10

For the crust: ¾ cup all-purpose flour 1½ cups rolled oats ¼ cup packed brown sugar ¼ teaspoon kosher salt ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted For the vanilla cream filling: ¼ cup cornstarch ½ cup granulated sugar 4 eggs 2 cups milk 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste 2 tablespoons butter For the fruit topping: 2 cups chopped fresh rhubarb ½ cup granulated sugar

Zest and juice of 1 orange Pinch of salt 2 cups fresh raspberries Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. To make the crust, in a food processor pulse together the flour, oats, brown sugar and salt.

Drizzle in the melted butter and pulse to make moistened crumbs.

Transfer the mixture to a 9-inch pie pan and press the crumbs across the bottom and up the sides. Bake for 20 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Meanwhile, make the cream filling. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cornstarch and sugar. Add the eggs and whisk until frothy and no trace of egg or lumps remains. Add the milk and whisk once more to combine.

Cook over medium heat, stirring and scraping the bottom and sides of the pan constantly, until the mixture comes up to a boil and thickens, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in the vanilla bean paste and butter.

Once the crust and filling are both cooked, pour the cream filling into the crust. Press a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the cream and refrigerate for 2 hours, or until cold.

Next, make the rhubarb filling. In a small saucepan over medium, combine the rhubarb, sugar, orange zest and juice and salt. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring frequently, for 20 minutes, or until the rhubarb is broken down and slightly thickened. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.

When all the parts of the pie have cooled, spread the rhubarb filling over the surface of the cream filling. Arrange fresh raspberries across the surface of the pie. Serve immediately or chill for up to 8 hours.

(These hormones are different from adrenaline.)

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system regulates blood pressure.

In a person with heart failure, the heart’s weak pumping activates the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. This raises the amount of fluid and sodium in the blood and blood pressure, creating extra work for the already weakened heart. ACE inhibitors and ARBs calm down the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, relaxing blood vessels and relieving high blood pressure.

On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a table listing the names, actions and possible side effects of drugs in each of these categories.

Two other types of medicines are sometimes used to treat heart failure: aldosterone blockers and digoxin. Aldosterone blockers are another class of drugs that act on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Digoxin boosts the strength of the heart’s contractions. It used to be the main drug used to treat heart failure, but it was not as potent as the newer drugs and had more serious possible side effects.

In addition, research is developing exciting possible new treatments, particularly a drug called an angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor.

Dear Readers: Yesterday, I answered a question about treatments for heart failure. It’s a big topic, and so today I’m talking about the medicines that are typically used to treat heart failure.

As we discussed, heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump efficiently enough to meet the body’s need for blood. As a result, tissues and organs throughout the body don’t get enough oxygen. Also, fluid builds up in the lungs and other body tissues.

Taking heart failure medicines as prescribed is perhaps the single most important thing you can do to feel better and live longer. The medicines available today are dramatically more potent than the medicines that were available when I was in medical school.

Most people with heart failure need a three-drug regimen. This includes a diuretic, a beta blocker, and an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or an angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB).

Diuretics are also called water pills. They help the kidneys eliminate the excess sodium and water that builds up because of heart failure. This reduces blood volume, blood pressure, swelling and congestion.

Beta blockers reduce the heart’s workload. At times of stress and during exercise, nerve cells release hormones that stimulate the heart. One such hormone is adrenaline. At first, these hormones cause the heart to pump both faster and more forcefully, giving a brief boost to the performance of a failing heart. But when persistently high levels of adrenaline keep “whipping” the heart muscle to work harder, the muscle becomes exhausted. Beta blockers reduce the stimulation of the heart, slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure and decrease the heart’s workload. When the heart is not being constantly whipped to pump faster and harder,

Dear Abby: Six months ago, my best friend’s fiance raped me. He is a man I’ve known for many years, and I didn’t see it coming. I became pregnant but had a miscarriage two months later. I recently had to have a hysterectomy from damage incurred from the rape and the miscarriage.

I never went to the police or pressed charges, and very few people are aware of the whole horrific experience. I have been beyond traumatized by what happened.

My best friend knows nothing about it, and I have been unable to face her since that awful night. We text now and then, and she keeps asking why I have suddenly dropped out of her life. I don’t know if I can tell her the truth. We were as close as sisters, and I honestly miss her like crazy, but I can’t be part of her life if this monster is in it.

Do I tell the truth? Or do I just shut her out of my life?
