Board also approves employee timekeeping software system

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield School District 202 Board members approved buying video cameras for buses, along with several construction projects and a timekeeping software system for employees.

At Monday’s board meeting, board members unanimously approved the buying and installing of video cameras on First Student buses for $30,000 from budgeted funds. After installation, First Student will reimburse the school district $10,000, school officials said.

“It’s a good liability issue if we ever have an incident,” said Jack Markley, interim assistant superintendent for business. “… It will be on videotape and the video of the circumstances around whatever incidents may take place … [the business office] thought this was a very good security and liability prevention activity.”

Lane Abrell, District 202 superintendent, wrote in an email that Bachand was being hired because “there is a shortage of speech and language pathologists.”

The resignation agreement and general release between Plainfield schools and Nancy LeMoine, a tenured teacher, was also approved.

“Being a personnel matter the reason behind her resignation, I am not at liberty to divulge,” Abrell wrote.

Board members unanimously approved using an employee automated timekeeping system by WorkForce software for $125,700 in budgeted funds. Abrell wrote the software system will “help the district eliminate time cards for hourly employees,” which should “save time and money.”

The construction bid for a Plainfield South High School storage building was also approved at the board meeting. The bid went to Larsen Contracting Inc. for $580,877, which school officials said will be paid for by construction funds.

Abrell wrote the equipment storage facility “has been sorely lacking.” Plainfield South is only one of the four high schools without a space to store mowers, plows and other equipment, he wrote.

“In the past, we have had issues with vandalism and damage to equipment left unsecured,” he wrote.

Trustees favor Lockport Street bypass option Alternative presents less effect on parks, wetlands

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Village trustees favored one alignment for the Lockport Street bypass project Monday night.

Trustees received another update on the project, which is aimed to alleviate projected increased traffic in the downtown area, during a Committee of the Whole meeting. The bypass is expected to be a route from the Route 126 and 143rd Street intersection to Lockport Street near the Avery Preserve.

Three alternative alignments were presented by Darcie Gabrisko, a vice president for consulting firm Strand Associates.

“Alternative 1a,” which was favored by trustees, is a route that hugs the eastern edge of the quarry south of the intersection. A four-lane road would cost $15.1 million to $16 million. A two-lane road would cost $12.3 million to

$13.2 million.

“Alternative 2” follows the same route, except it cuts across Lily Cache Creek with a bridge and heads south, bordering the western edge of the Avery Preserve. “Alternative 4” bypasses the preserve and parklands by heading east on 143rd Street and turning south just east of the Deer Creek Recreation Club.

Three other alternatives, 1b, 3 and 5, were previously eliminated.

“Alternative 1a is recommended because it appears to be a low-cost alternative,” Gabrisko said. “It also requires little parkland and has minimal impacts to the parkland. It has minimal wetland impacts and is also less likely to have encroachment into the floodplains.”

Encroachment and impact on parks and wetlands is an important concern, Gabrisko said, because the project will likely be linked with the I-55 interchange projects at Route 126 and Lockport Street.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy said the Lockport bypass would reduce fu-

ture traffic projections in the downtown area while increasing traffic near the proposed interchanges, lending a greater chance at winning federal grants for the project.

“The whole goal is to move truck traffic off of Lockport Street,” Trustee Margie Bonuchi said. “Alternative 1a does appear to be the best solution.”

Gabrisko said there is no definitive start date for the project, which is pending funding.

Big Serve update

Trustees also heard updates on participation in the Big Serve volunteer event on May 2 and 3.

In its second year, the event organized volunteers to work on 23 different projects in Plainfield and surrounding communities. More than 900 people volunteered, Community Christian Church volunteer leader Scott Patton said.

This year, the Big Serve was combined with local churches’ “Change the World” effort to promote volunteerism throughout the village.

Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate in Joliet marks 150th anniversary

OLIET – The influence of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate on Joliet was reflected at a recent Rotary Club meeting.

Almost everyone raised their hands when asked if the nuns had an impact on their lives or the lives of someone they knew.

The Joliet-based order is celebrating its 150th anniversary. During that time it founded, among other institutions, the Sister Dolores University of St. Francis, the Zemont Guardian Angel Home, Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, the Franciscan Learning Center and St. Francis Academy, which later merged to become Joliet Catholic Academy.

At one time, sisters from the order were teaching in nearly every parochial school in Joliet and surrounding communities.

Sisters have started the Groundwork Domestic Violence Program, The Upper Room Crisis Hotline, and the Center for Correctional Concerns, which provides education to Will County Jail inmates.

It’s been a busy century and a half.

The Joliet order also has done work in foreign countries, including Brazil, Guam and the Dominican Republic, Sister Dolores Zemont, president of the order, told the Rotary Club of Joliet.

“But our roots are here in Joliet, and our roots are very deep,” Zemont said.

Noting that the founder – Sister Mary Alfred Moes, who went on to start another order in Rochester, Minnesota, that was instrumental in development of the Mayo Clinic – was doing work in

is based out of an office on Essington Road in Joliet.

There are 161 sisters in the order today, including 17 who work in Brazil. The others are in North America, mostly the United States. Nearly 100 are in Joliet.

At its height in the 1960s and 1970s, the congregation had more than 500 members, Zemont said. But, Zemont noted, those were unusually high numbers, and the congregation thrived in earlier years with smaller numbers than it has today.

“We may be going back to what we were,” Zemont said.

“A lot of it has to do with spirit – being in spirit with the call of the Lord. We are what the Lord calls us to be.”

While the sisters may not be as numerous as they once were, they still are having an

impact in Joliet. .

NEW AND TRADITIONAL ROLES

Sister Leomarie Luecke was a teacher for five years at St. Mary Immaculate Grade School in the 1960s. Since 1971, she has been working with immigrants, teaching English as a second language to Spanish-speaking adults in the Joliet area. Today, she is employed by Joliet Junior College to teach ESL classes at the Spanish Community Center in Joliet.

“I’ve been teaching ESL since 1971,” Luecke said. “I can hardly go to the store without seeing somebody I know.”

Joliet tries to draw attention to sign ordinance

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet might have to try putting up some signs to get people’s attention.

So far, there has been little compliance with a city ordinance that puts limits on banners, feather signs and other types of temporary signs used to get consumers’ attention as they drive past, a Joliet official said Monday.

The city late last week put out a news release to draw

attention to the fact that the temporary sign ordinance was put into effect in April.

Kendall Jackson, director of planning for Joliet, said enforcement could start in July.

But city officials first would like to see if they can get compliance.

“That’s the goal is to get compliance before we start doing that,” Jackson said.

“It’s not to get fines. We’re going to see if anything changes – probably over the next couple of weeks or so. Then, we’re going to start enforce-

ment.”

Fines start at $50 a day. So, if temporary signs are cheap, the fines are not.

The city requires permits at a price of $50 per temporary sign. Businesses are allowed to have up to three signs for a 30-day period. They can get the permits twice a year.

No one has gotten a permit yet, Jackson said Monday morning.

Winds cause tree damage in Joliet area

Road crews worked Monday to clear streets and sidewalks of tree branches and yard debris after strong winds ripped through Joliet. Monday’s weather brought strong winds throughout the region, with thunderstorms predicted for the night, according to the National Weather Service. A tornado watch was issued for Grundy County, among others in Northern Illinois, until 11 p.m. Monday.

Jackson said some businesses that had been the focus of attention when the ordinance was developed took down temporary signs. But there has been little compliance otherwise.

The ordinance also received little attention when it was developed. Businesses did not come to City Council meetings to oppose it.

HAJ gets funding to redevelop city project

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Housing Authority of Joliet has announced it will get the financing it needs to redevelop the Des Plaines Gardens housing project.

If all goes smoothly, HAJ plans to begin tearing down the 122 units along Des Plaines Street by early September and begin building again in the spring.

Des Plaines residents would get Section 8 vouchers to live elsewhere until the new housing is available.

HAJ Chief Executive Officer Michael Simelton cautioned that the agency still must get final approval from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“We probably won’t know anything until August,” Simelton said. But, if HUD does sign off on the plan, he said, demolition “could start as early as late August or early September.”

The Illinois Housing Development Authority last week approved a 10-year, annual allocation of $1.2 million in Low-Income Housing Tax Credits for the project. HAJ had been turned down for the funding previously.

HAJ also will get a $5 million construction loan and provide some of its own money for the $18.6 million project, Simelton said.

With HUD approval, construction could start in spring 2016 with the first homes becoming available about 18 months after the start of construction, or by late 2017, Simelton said.

Des Plaines Gardens would be replaced by “Water’s Edge,” which will consist of 68 single-family and townhome rental units. Another 54 homes would be built in a second phase of the project at the Liberty Meadow Estates development, an HAJ project located at Briggs and Rosalind streets.

Liberty Meadow Estates is a mixed-income subdivision that replaced the Poole Gardens housing project.

The redevelopment “is going to be good for the residents,” said HAJ board Chairwoman Mittchelena Meade. “Most of them are going to have new homes.”

Meade said Des Plaines Gardens residents will get Section 8 housing to live elsewhere during the reconstruction.

Trial to begin in party slaying

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The alleged gang member accused of gunning down an innocent bystander on a downtown street four years ago is set to face trial this week.

Jevon D. Lesley, 22, is charged with murder in the slaying of Anthony Fearn, 18, on July 9, 2011, outside the KO Zone Boxing Club, 218 E. Cass St. Opening arguments are expected to begin Tuesday after 12 jurors and four alternates were selected Monday afternoon.

Judge Sarah Jones agreed with Assistant Will County Public Defenders Steven Whitmore and Jaya Varghese that prospective jurors would be asked if they’re able to be fair and impartial despite hearing evidence of gang membership – since Jones also ruled Monday that Joliet police Sgt. Darrell Gavin will be allowed to testify as an expert witness on street gangs.

“He will testify the defendant was a member of Sqad (sic) Ma-

fia Vice Lords and the shooting was gang-motivated,” Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Tricia McKenna said.

McKenna also said Lesley told Det. Shawn Filipiak the party at the boxing club was shut down because the ‘Sqad (sic) was getting into it with the Sic (sic) Made Gangster Disciples.’”

When the large crowd was forced outside, Lesley allegedly took out a handgun and fired blindly toward a red minivan.

Instead of striking his target, he twice hit Fearn, who was running with other bystanders, according to police.

“He admitted to ‘having a banger and asking who wanted it,’ ” McKenna said.

Fearn’s family said he had gone to the party with some buddies and a girl he’d recently met. Police said Fearn, who worked part time at Kohl’s and was an instructor at SUDA Mixed Martial Arts, had no gang involvement. Filipiak told The Herald-News in 2012 that Fearn’s lack of criminal connections was a likely reason wit-

nesses and informants didn’t immediately identify Lesley as his killer.

Lesley was charged with Fearn’s murder 14 months after the shooting while he was already imprisoned on two convictions for unlawful use of a weapon. Lesley and another man were arrested in January 2012 after Joliet police stopped their car and found one .38-caliber handgun that had been reported stolen and another with the serial number filed off. Jones agreed Monday that prosecutors will be allowed to ask about those convictions if Lesley testifies on his own behalf.

Lesley’s 14-year-old brother, Deonte, was killed Jan. 3, 2011, when Vernon McCormick sprayed bullets into the window of his Lockport Township home.

Will County Sheriff’s police said Jevon Lesley was McCormick’s target in the shooting which also injured two others. Vernon McCormick was sentenced to 85 years in prison the day after Jevon Lesley was charged with Fearn’s murder.

Two women arrested in home invasion

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police said baby mama drama led to the arrest of two women Sunday night on home invasion charges.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said officers were called at 9:44 p.m. to an apartment in the 200 block of South Joliet Street. A 28-yearold woman said her door was propped open when Sherita N. Edwards, 28, Tanaye V. Tucker, 34, and a 48-year-old woman pushed their way inside.

“[The victim] and Edwards each have children with the same father and there have been ongoing issues between them,” Gregory said.

Gregory said Edwards began punching the victim in the face while Tucker grabbed a bottle and attempted to strike her in the head, but was unable to make contact. Gregory said the victim’s 10-year-old son called 911 and the intruders fled to a red Dodge Charger. A 9-year-old girl and 6-year-old girl also were in the apartment at the time.

The victim did not require medical treatment for her injuries.

Gregory said responding officers stopped the Dodge at Joliet and McDonough streets and found Edwards and Tucker inside. Edwards, of the 300 block of South Joliet Street, and Tucker, of the 500 block of Illinois Street, were identified as the suspects and arrested on charges of home invasion.

Gregory said the third woman was being sought as of Monday afternoon for questioning.

Refuse collection will not change during holiday week

JOLIET – Since the Fourth of July holiday is a Saturday, there will be no change in regularly scheduled garbage, recycling, and yard waste pick-up the week of June 29 in Joliet.

JOLIET – Joliet Mayor O’Dekirk is asking Joliet residents and city business owners to consider serving on one of the city’s Mayor Bob various existing O’Dekirk and future volunteer advisory boards.

“The City of Joliet has many committees, commissions and advisory panels that are in need of new ideas and fresh perspectives from citizens from all walks of life,” O’Dekirk said in a news release. “I am not just looking for Harvard graduates or experts in their field – we are

looking for people who want to improve our city, are willing to commit time and effort, and have some special interest or particular background or experience which may help our city as it seeks to progress.

He noted the mayor has appointment power to various regional panels for which he will have to fill as positions become vacant.

The city of Morris looks to be next in the nationwide trend of municipalities installing public dog parks, after the City Council approved June 15 an authorization allowing Emily Lamaze to begin work on and to buy $10,000 of materials and equipment required for the project.

“I’m thinking it will be a great project, especially for folks who live in apartments or don’t have the necessary space for their dogs to run around,” Mayor Richard Kopczick said Monday.

Lamaze, a local Girl Scout and junior at Morris Community High School, originally presented the idea to the city in September 2014. Lamaze wants to design and construct the park as part of her gold award achievement project for the organization.

“It’s a tremendous achievement,” Kopczick said. “To have the ambition to go forward and be a general contractor to get the gold award is a tough hurdle.”

“I thought there might be some other people in a similar situation,” Lamaze said.

Although she doesn’t look at the project as intimidating for her age, she said it is a long process. People she’s talked to about it seem excited, she said.

The location is a city-owned grass lot with minimal trees on the west end of Lions Park on Michael Drive. Kopczick said Lions Park is separated by the roadway.

The $10,000 will go toward materials such as fencing and benches, Kopczick said. The ultimate design has plans for a small parking lot, a sidewalk and a spigot for refilling water bowls, to be done by Morris Public Works.

The materials installation would be completed by Lamaze, as her project requires,

along with friends, family and other scouts, she said.

Lamaze said she has to meet with the Parks and Annexation Committee again, but is hoping to start work in mid-July and open the park in August.

The tentative plan as of now, Kopczick said, is that city will look to knock back a section of the curbed area and put potentially six to eight parking stalls along the property as part of the 2016-17 street maintenance program.

The dog park would be separated by fencing into two smaller parks – one for small dogs, and one for large dogs.

The entry gates will be double-gated to help prevent dogs from escaping as they enter and exit with their owners.

The land had no proposed plans, Kopczick said, until Lamaze’s project came along.

CREST HILL – Agents with the Illinois State Police’s Division of Internal Investigation arrested Monday a Stateville corrections officer on charges of theft and official misconduct.

Illinois Department of Corrections Lt. Perry Kirk, from Hazel Crest, was arrested on a warrant for theft and official misconduct, according to a news release issued late Mon-

day afternoon by ISP. Kirk was arrested without incident at the Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, where he was employed as a corrections officer, according to ISP The charges stem from incidents which occurred in Will County involving theft of transportation funds, according to the news release. The allegations against Kirk were brought to the ISP by Illinois Department of Corrections of-

ficials.

Kirk was remanded to the custody of the Will County Sheriff, pending $25,000 bond.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case. A message left late Monday afternoon for that office was not immediately returned.

The investigation is ongoing. ISP noted in its news release that additional information was not available at this time.

Seeley said she became interested in crisis lines when they were first started in the early 1970s. At the time, she was working as a guidance counselor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

“I didn’t have enough to do,” Seeley said. “That’s when I started volunteering for the crisis hotlines.”

Seeley now has plenty to do. She later got a degree in law, specializing in areas that would apply to crisis hotlines.

She has visited countries around the world advising on the startup of crisis lines. She taught a summer class at Odessa Mechnikor State University in Ukraine before the current crisis in that country made it impossible for her to go.

The sisters fulfill traditional roles, too.

Sister Barbara Kwiatkowski is a campus minister at Joliet Catholic Academy, where she works to maintain a Franciscan presence at a school that no longer has religious faculty as it once did.

She works with a Carmelite priest who does the same for the school’s Carmelite tradition from the former Joliet Catholic High School.

“You can go to school and be educated intellectually,” Kwiatkowski said. “But where are you going to get that spiritual education? You get that at Catholic schools. I think the Franciscans and Carmelites perpetuate that.”

Kwiatkowski, who was dean of students at the former St. Francis Academy in the 1980s, said the students appreciate the continued presence of Franciscans and Carmelites at the school. They will stop in with good news or to ask for prayers during hard times.

The campus ministers help organize community work that students do.

“We pretty much are responsible for the spiritual

well-being of the school,” she said.

The Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate face a changing time, Zemont said.

But so are all religious orders.

Sisters enter the order at the rate of one every few years instead of the 20 or 30 a year that joined the congregation in the 1960s. Like Zermont, who worked in business sales and college administration before joining the order, sisters enter the congregation at an older age and with life experience.

But Zemont expressed confidence that the sisters have an important role to play in Joliet and in the world.

“I think many times we still stand alone to show the world there is a different way,” Zemont said. “Our world can be a little confusing. People look to people with strong morals and principles to be a compass. I think we can be that. I think religious life is needed now more than ever.”

Schuller, the leading proponent of the Third Stream movement fusing jazz and classical music, has died at age 89. His son, bassist Ed Schuller, said his father died Sunday at a hospital in Boston. terview. “And he almost had a heart attack because that was a heretical thing to say.”

Schuller’s newfound passion led him to frequent New York jazz clubs, where he became involved in the burgeoning bebop scene in the late 1940s. Although French horn was rarely used in jazz ensembles, Schuller began his jazz career as part of trumpeter Miles Davis’ group that recorded the seminal 1949-50 “Birth of the Cool” sessions, which fused jazz and classical techniques.

He would go on to perform and record with such jazz greats as J.J. Johnson, Eric Dolphy, Dizzy Gillespie, Ornette Coleman and Charles Mingus.

In the mid-1950s, he teamed up with the classically trained jazz pianist John Lewis, musical director of the Modern Jazz Quartet, to form the Modern Jazz Society in an effort to bring jazz and classical music together. Schuller felt musicians from both genres could learn from each other.

During a 1957 lecture at Brandeis University, Schuller coined the term “Third Stream” to describe his vision of what would result if the two main streams of music in the U.S. got married and begat a child. Schuller and Lewis introduced their Third Stream compositions on two Columbia albums, “Music for Brass” and “Modern Jazz Concert” in 195758.

“When I started the whole thing in 1957 with the Third Stream ... it was extremely controversial,” Schuller said in a 2010 interview with jazz writer Mark Myers. “I was vilified on both sides. Classical musicians, composers and critics all thought that classical would be contaminated by this lowly jazz music, this black music.

And jazz musicians and critics said, ‘My god, classical music is going to stultify our great, spontaneous music.’ It was all nonsense and ignorance, of course. Eventually the two came together anyway.”

Schuller and Lewis also founded the Lenox School of Jazz in western Massachusetts, which brought over Coleman from the West Coast for its summer program in 1959 shortly before the free jazz pioneer made his history-making New York debut.

By the 1960s, Schuller had largely given up performing to focus on composing, teaching and writing. He served as president of the New England Conservatory in Boston from 1967-77, where he established the first degree-granting jazz program at a major classical conservatory and instituted the Third Stream department with pianist Ran Blake as its chair. He also founded the New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble, which earned a Grammy Award for best chamber music performance in 1973 for the album “Joplin: The Red Back Book” and helped spur a ragtime revival. Schuller won two more Grammys for writing liner notes.

NEW YORK – Gunther Schuller, a horn player, educator and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer who was the leading proponent of the Third Stream movement fusing jazz and classical music, died Sunday at age 89.

His son, Ed Schuller, said his father died Sunday morning at a hospital in Boston. He said his father had several medical conditions.

“He was a great musician.

I loved him and we will miss him,” Schuller, a bassist, said.

“He had a great life, he lived his dream.”

As a composer, Schuller wrote more than 200 compositions, including solo and orchestral works, chamber music, opera and jazz. His orchestral work, “Of Reminiscences and Reflections,” dedicated to his wife Marjorie Black, won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Schuller, who was born on Nov. 22, 1925, in New York, came from a family of classical musicians. His grandfather was a conductor in Germany and his father was a violinist with the New York Philharmonic.

Schuller developed into a virtuoso on French horn. As a teenager, he began playing with the American Ballet Theater and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in the ’40s, and then joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, where he remained until 1959.

Schuller discovered a whole new musical world when he heard Duke Ellington on the radio one night while doing his high school homework.

“I said to my father, ‘You know, Pop, I heard some music – Duke Ellington – last night and that music is as great as Beethoven’s and Mozart’s,’ ” Schuller said in a 2009 NPR in-

In 1990, Schuller and David Baker founded and conducted the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra in Washington, D.C., dedicated to performing and preserving American jazz masterpieces.

He also helped put together an all-star orchestra and conducted a 1989 performance of the late jazz bassist Charles Mingus’ epic work “Epitaph,” which was also released on record. He regularly appeared as a guest conductor with orchestras.

As writer, Schuller authored both educational works and jazz histories, including “Early Jazz: Its Roots and Musical Development” (1968) and “The Swing Era: The Development of Jazz, 1930-1945.” In 2011, he published the first volume of his autobiography, “Gunther Schuller: A Life in Pursuit of Music and Beauty.”

Schuller’s major orchestral works include “Symphony” (1965), “Seven Studies of Paul Klee” (1959) and “An Arc Ascending” (1996). He composed two operas: “The Visitation” (1966), based on a Franz Kafka story; and the children’s opera “The Fisherman and his Wife” with text by John Updike, derived from the Grimm fairy tale.

His noted Third Stream-style compositions include “Transformation for Jazz Ensemble” (1957, “Concerto for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra (1959) and “Variants on a Theme of Thelonious Monk (1960).

In 2008, Schuller was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts, the nation’s highest jazz honor.

Earlier this year, the MacDowell Colony, a prestigious artists’ residence program, awarded him its lifetime achievement award “for setting an example of discovery and experimentation” as a composer and teacher.

Records: Illinois film tax credits total $204 million so far

CHICAGO – The state of Illinois has granted $204 million in tax breaks to more than 930 movies, TV shows and commercials filmed in the state from July 2008 to December 2014 – productions like the TV show “Chicago Fire” and the movie “Transformers 4,” according to state records.

According to the Illinois comptroller’s office, about $117 million of those tax breaks have been claimed so far. The state allows five years to claim the credits on tax returns, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. And the Illinois Film Office has yet to approve hundreds of applications for tax credits because producers have two years to submit paperwork showing how much money they spent in Illinois.

For example, so far “Chicago Fire” has received only a $1.6 million tax credit for its pilot episode, and the show filmed in Chicago is in its third season.

The tax breaks come at a time when Illinois faces an approximately $6 billion deficit in the upcoming budget year.

South Carolina governor: Removing Confederate flag will defy race hatred

By SEANNA ADCOX, JEFFREY COLLINS and MEG KINNARD The Associated Press CHARLESTON, S.C. – South Carolina’s governor declared Monday the Confederate flag should be removed from the Statehouse grounds as she acknowledged its use as a symbol of hatred by the man accused of killing nine black church members has made it too divisive to display in such a public space.

“My hope is that by removing a symbol that divides us, we can move our state forward in harmony, and we can honor the nine blessed souls who are now in Heaven,” Haley said.

The massacre inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church suddenly has made removing the flag – long thought politically impossible in South Carolina – the go-to position, even for conservative Republican politicians.

Haley was flanked by Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, now running for president, as well as South Carolina’s junior Republican senator, Tim Scott, and Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn, both of whom are black. Within moments, her call was echoed by the Republican Party chairman and the top GOP lawmaker, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Haley urged the state’s GOP-led House and Senate to debate the issue no later than this summer. If not, she said she will call a special session and force them to resolve it.

“I will use that authority for the purpose of the legislature removing the flag from the

Statehouse grounds,” she said.

South Carolina House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford said he’s confident after talking to members of both parties that the Confederate flag will be taken down within the next two months.

“A lot of people understand this is a moment we have to respond to,” said Rep. Rick Quinn, a Republican and former House majority leader who said he will vote to take it down.

Lawmakers have proposed moving it to the state-run Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum.

Making any changes to the banner requires a two-thirds supermajority in both houses under the terms of a 15-yearold deal that moved it from atop the Statehouse to a position next to a monument to Confederate soldiers out front.

The last governor who called for the flag’s removal, Republican David Beasley, was hounded out of office in 1998 by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The group’s influence also doomed his front-running Senate campaign for the seat won by Republican Jim DeMint.

Rauner’s ad not as negative as expected Gov. Bruce Rauner’s much-anticipated TV ad isn’t as over-the-top negative as we might have thought it would be.

“Exactly,” was the response from a Rauner official I spoke with after watching the ad and making that above observation about its somewhat muted tone.

“There’s plenty of time for that if it’s necessary,” the official added.

In case you haven’t seen it, the governor’s ad begins with shots of downtown Chicago then moves to a photo of Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.

“Illinois is at a crossroads,” says the female announcer.

“Mike Madigan and the politicians he controls refuse to change.

“They’re saying ‘No’ to spending discipline, ‘No’ to job-creating economic reforms, ‘No’ to term limits.

“All they want is higher taxes. Again.”

At the 19-second mark, Gov. Rauner appears in the ad.

“Change in Springfield isn’t easy,” Rauner says in voice-

over as he’s seen on the screen talking with a couple of male workers. “But you didn’t send me here to do what’s easy,” he says as he’s seen talking to a woman standing at a counter near some flowers.

“With your help,” Rauner says to the camera as the phrase “Join Bruce Rauner” appears next to his head, “I’m gonna keep fightin’ to grow our economy and fix our broken state government.”

The ad has played in most media markets in the state on both broadcast and cable stations, including the expensive St. Louis area, where Rauner is spending at least $100,000, according to a firm which tracks these things. Chicago, Rockford, Champaign/Springfield/ Decatur, Peoria and the Quad Cities have all been targeted.

An aide to the House Speaker who saw the ad before I did said he didn’t think it would make much of a difference.

After a buildup in expectations, he said, the ad failed to bite much at all, and he even laughed it off.

But a top Senate Democratic operative expressed sincere

VIEWS Rich Miller relief that the spot wasn’t so harsh that it would’ve destroyed any possibility of reaching an agreement on the budget and the governor’s “Turnaround Agenda” issues, like workers’ compensation reform, a property tax freeze and tort reform.

They’re both probably right.

Rauner’s ad does not ask Illinoisans to do anything specific except support him.

There are no phone numbers to call, no other actions to take.

He could’ve flooded Madigan’s Statehouse switchboard if he’d chosen to do so, but he didn’t.

So, on the one hand, you gotta wonder what exactly the governor hopes to accomplish with this ad, except to “punish” Madigan a bit and demonstrate his willingness to spend a million bucks a week on whatever the heck he wants.

On the other hand, those who still think a deal can get

done ought to be relieved that the governor showed a little restraint in his march to war and didn’t go at Madigan with both barrels blazing.

And, by being somewhat reasonable and coming in under expectations, the ad will likely avoid any immediate public backlash. By speechifying across the state for months instead of holing up in Springfield, the governor has opened himself up to potential criticism that he ought to dump the rhetoric and get to work on solving actual problems. He’ll still have to deal with an angry and dismissive Madigan, however. That’s not going to be any easier now.

Former Republican Gov. Jim Edgar has been pleading for calm lately and asking that both sides avoid personal insults.

“The conversations they’re having aren’t the problem,” Edgar told WICS TV. “Sometimes it’s what they’re saying when they aren’t together that’s the problem. It seems to be Madigan compares [Rauner] to Blagojevich and [Rauner] makes reference to their

character. All that will happen in the heat of battle, but I think everyone needs to know we’re at the point if we’re going to get things done we need to back off of that,” the former governor said.

Regarding the new ad, Edgar said he was worried that Rauner’s TV buy would do more harm than good. “I fear that they could cause the Democrats not to come to the table, but maybe to dig in more,” Edgar told Statehouse reporters.

Rauner has all but claimed that Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton are corrupt, Madigan has compared Rauner to the imprisoned Rod Blagojevich, Rauner’s staff has pointedly insulted the House Democrats for engaging in a “sexist smear” of a Rauner appointee, etc., etc., etc.

So, it’s little wonder that Edgar is worried that this thing could easily go off the rails – if it hasn’t already.

Special memories of hall of fame class VIEWS Curt Herron As I glanced at the list of members of the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame following last year’s ceremony, I knew who most of the inductees were, but I never really had much of an opportunity to see them play or coach locally.

I got to watch Bob Basarich and Gordie Gillespie coach, see Terry Gannon play, often dealt with R.J. Drazkowski and Don Ladas and got to report on many of Matt Senffner’s teams.

So that’s what makes this year’s class so special for a reporter who is nearing 30 years in the business. I got the chance to see Oliver Gibson and Nick Bromberek compete and covered teams that were coached by Pat Sullivan, Barb Burk and Mark Ruettiger.

I saw Gibson play in both football and basketball for Romeoville. I’ll always remember the day Sports Channel America came to Romeoville for a national game of the week broadcast between the Spartans and Lockport, with Gibson being the main attraction.

While appreciative of his coaches’ support at Romeoville, Gibson admitted he always had a soft spot for Joliet.

“I’d been coming to Joliet every week from age 11 through my senior year in college because my barbershop, Williams Brothers, was here,” Gibson said. “When I started going to high school, there were people from Joliet who’d give me more love than I got from Romeoville and Bolingbrook, where I was from, but that’s the kind of town that it is.

“When I was at Notre Dame, I would always claim to be from Joliet because no one knew where Romeoville was. Joliet was the closest thing to a big city that we had out in the burbs, so Joliet had such a presence in our growing up.”

And I might never witness a greater individual performance than the one turned in by Bromberek at the 2000 boys track and field finals

Like all the other inductees in this class, Bromberek acknowledged a lot of people had a hand in his eventual success.

“Is there something to be said about what we did?

Absolutely, but every one of us was in a different sphere of influence and in different time frames,” Bromberek said. “I grew up lifting with Rudy (Francis Ruettiger) and working with Tim Graf and those guys influenced me and helped enable me to do the great things that I did since the foundation was set.

“I was fortunate to have a real good coaching staff that was there for me. John Coneset is one guy who’ll I’ll never forget, since he took over where Francis left off with the lifting. He took me to another level and really got into my mind with the mental side of track and field.”

I got to cover a few St. Francis games late in Sullivan’s career, but even though

I didn’t know him well, he seemed to know who I was and treated me as if I’d known him for years. But I also felt I knew him since he was always around at any big game in the area.

It’s hard to imagine that you’ll find a bigger proponent for the quality of athletes from Joliet than Sullivan, who’s proud to let others know this area is special.

“I’ve always been amazed that an area like this has produced the professional athletes and coaches who’ve been so successful,” Sullivan said.

“When I was in Europe doing coaching clinics, guys would ask me where I was from and I’d say, ‘Joliet,’ and they knew about it.

“I tell people there’s a city about 30 miles northeast of us called Chicago, but we’re Joliet. In my 34 years at St. Francis, we had a lot of Joliet kids who played for us. You can take the Joliet athlete, and they can play anywhere.

Our kids never took a back seat to anybody.”

In the late 1980s, I started covering Burk’s softball

teams, just as Lockport’s success was starting to take off.

But she was more than just a good coach.

I always enjoyed dealing with her since I realized she was one of those who led the way and devoted themselves to try to bring equality to girls athletics.

“I was a beginner and didn’t know what I was doing, other than practicing different situations and coming up with drills, so I was just having a great time,” Burk said. “As the girls started achieving more success, I had the girls set goals and if they reached their goal, they had to set a higher one so everyone had to make each other better and it was a team effort to improve the whole team.

“Looking back on the olden days, it wasn’t always easy.

We didn’t have any assistants and we had to do A and B teams and do all of the scheduling as the sport coordinator. And I taught five classes every day for 35 years, plus all of that. But those were good times because the kids wanted to try as hard as they could to

do something because there wasn’t anything before and they were appreciative.”

The closest person I’ve been to from this year’s class is Ruettiger, who I first met more than 20 years ago. I literally watched his kids grow up each winter and I was there for a lot of the great times he’s enjoyed while coaching at Lincoln-Way Central and West.

I’ve had the privilege of getting to know many of the Ruettigers, one of the great families of Illinois wrestling and a group that certainly epitomizes the work ethic of the Joliet area.

“Joliet is the City of Champions,” Mark Ruettiger said.

“After growing up and being around athletics like I have, when you see a kid from Joliet, you know that he’s going to have certain qualities and the biggest one is toughness.

“It’s always been that way, and I think that it’s just part of the city.”

Spartans focus on winning all season long

By JEFF De GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Coming off a 2112 season in the 2014-15 school year, the Romeoville girls basketball team is looking to put together a complete season.

“Last year was interesting,” Spartans coach Julio Carrasco said. “The second half of the season we really came around.

“We were really young and playing like it early. It took us awhile to gel and learn each other. This year we want to start like we finished, build off that and continue to improve. We are all a year older, we have to learn to mesh with each other. That is what this summer is all about.”

The mix of experience and

youth could prove invaluable for the Spartans. Seniors Skye Osborne and Nia Harris, junior Lexi Martin and sophomore Jahari Smith are the core of the team.

Osborne, the captain, wants to improve especially on the leadership role.

“I have to really communicate with everyone, especially on the positive,” Osborne said.

“This summer is about improvement as a team playing together and all of our individual skills.”

“Smarter passing, getting the ball to where it’s suppose to be and finding the open person. I also want to enjoy my last season as a high school player this year. We have the talent to be a good team.”

Harris will be joined by

Smith to provide depth to the inside game.

“This summer I’m really working on my post game,” Harris said. “Be strong to the basket and rebound. Conditioning is also a big key. I feel really good about our team.”

Carrasco added the summer is slowly, but surely coming around.

“I want these girls to know where everyone will be on the floor in any situation,” he said. “They have to get used to each other and see each other on the floor. The summer is not about winning or losing games, it’s about getting our team ready for when the season starts.”

Martin, the junior, saw plenty of action as a sophomore and gained valuable ex-

perience.

“The big difference was the speed of the game on the varsity level,” she said. “It’s now time for me to be much more of a leader on the floor. I’m really working on my defense so that we can have that better beginning to the season.”

Smith gained playing time as a freshman and was a key to the Spartans’ second-half-ofthe-season surge.

Carrasco said this can only help her in the long run.

“She is already getting some looks from colleges but needs to get stronger physically with the inside presence,” he said.

“This year I know what to expect,” Smith said. “Last year was so physical inside. I’m really working on my shot, both

facing the basket and with my back turned. I’m playing a lot of basketball this summer, and I really want to get better.”

The Spartans’ schedule for the upcoming season season added a new wrinkle with the Montini Christmas Tournament.

“I’m really happy that we added the Montini tourney to our schedule,” Carrasco said.

“It will be tough, but this summer we are also working on getting our girls to have and understand that killer mentality.

“If we get up, we keep going and if we get down, we never give up. We have the talent and the experience, now we just have to mold it all together. That is what makes the summer fun.”

Hoffman wins late-model feature at Grundy Speedway SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Eddie Hoffman passed Scott Koerner late in the race and went on to win the 30-lap late-model feature in Friday’s stock-car racing program at Grundy County Speedway.

The victory was Hoffman’s fourth of the season. Koerner finished second, followed by Brandon Clubb, Larry Schuler, Dave Gentile Jr., Brett Sontag,

Dylan Harmon, Dave Einhaus, John Nutley and Dean Patterson.

Sontag set the fast time at 15.183. Tony Scalpelli took the first heat, with Jeremy Spoonmore second and Koerner third.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Kris Bryant connected twice for his first career multihomer game, and the Cubs beat Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-2, on Monday night.

Bryant hit a two-run drive in the third inning and a solo shot in the eighth. Matt Szczur had a solo homer against Kershaw after being promoted from Triple-A Iowa before the game for his fourth stint of the season with the Cubs.

The two homers off Kershaw (5-5) ran his total for the year to 11, two more than he allowed all

Two with ties to Braidwood battle aggressive brain tumors

RAIDWOOD – A Braidwood youngster and a former area resident are both locked in battles with an aggressive form of brain cancer that is difficult to treat.

Brayden Grayling, who will be a first-grader at Reed-Custer Primary School in Braidwood this fall, and Clarence Humphrey, formerly of Braidwood and Wilmington, both have glioblastoma multiforme or GBM. The difficulty in treating these tumors, according to the American Brain Tumor Association at www.abta.org, arises from the many different types of cells these tumors contain.

Having run out of treatment options in the United States, the Graylings – in July – plan to take Brayden to a clinic in Tijuana, Mexico, which claims the highest cancer cure rate in the world, said Beth Grayling, Brayden’s mother.

Beth said the clinic offers hoxsey, a concoction of natural herbs. If it works, Brayden will need to return every six months.

Humphrey, who moved from the area to Tennessee in 1987, could soon undergo his third brain surgery in a one-year period, knowing the procedure could kill him, said his wife, Lori Humphrey.

Their cancer battles have taken a toll on the individuals – Brayden gets severe headaches and frequent vomiting, and has lost strength in his legs to the point that his parents often have to carry him, while the left side of Humphrey’s face is drawn and he has a difficult time communicating – and their families.

“You feel helpless. The depression is so thick,” Beth said.

“It is hard not to imagine the worst of the worst.”

Nevertheless, she wants to be strong for him.

“When I have my breakdowns, I go outside and feed the ducks,” Lori said.

The 6-year-old boy had headaches for 12 straight days in February 2014. On the second day, an immediate care doctor said it was a sinus infection. On the eighth day, Beth, a registered nurse, noticed Brayden’s eyes were dilated.

“My heart dropped. I knew it was a tumor,” Beth said.

On March 21, 2014, Brayden was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma. Doctors told her only 3 percent of patients survive three years.

“That is the worst of the worst,” Beth said. “It is terminal.”

Ironically, in 2010, Beth was diagnosed with an unrelated brain tumor. Three months out

of brain surgery, she found out she was pregnant. However, she miscarried, then had gall bladder surgery and was in a major car accident.

But it’s Brayden’s struggle that affects her.

“I would go through it all again if it would cure my son,”

Beth said.

The longtime area resident, who worked at Matheson TRIGAS in Joliet, was diagnosed with GBM in 2004 and had surgery to remove the mass. A check-up scan this year showed a mass the size of lemon on his brain.

Doctors said he is no longer a candidate for radiation because radiation induced the tumor.

The Humphreys are waiting to see if Clarence qualifies for a treatment as part of a study that has not yet been federally approved. If he is not approved for the study, a third surgery in 12 months is possible.

Doctors are puzzled, Lori said, because it’s rare for the tumor to come back like this, in someone who had surgery 10 years ago. The ups and downs are extremely hard, as well as the not knowing, Lori added.

“This time it has affected

his balance. This time it has affected his face; it is drawn on one side like he had a stroke,” Lori said. “His vision has been messed up since the first tumor behind his right eye.”

Support for both

Beth said people have sent the family gas cards and meal cards and brought meals to their home. A local church provided $4,000 to the family. She called the support “phenomenal and overwhelming.”

“There are a lot of people pulling for him,” Beth said.

Lori said she has received support from family, close friends and through a Facebook page for wives whose husbands have GBM. She wishes people were more familiar with GBM. “Every single day someone is losing a loved one to this.

People need to be more aware,” Lori said. “You never see gray ribbons unless it is the wife of a Warrior.”

The event has grown to a month of educational activities, which have raised more than $14,000. The Haines staff and students also participate in the New Lenox Relay for Life, held this year on July 10 at Lincoln-Way West High School.

Resident attends camp for burn-injured children

PLAINFIELD – Reese Lage of Plainfield suffered a burn injury at age 6 when she was burned by a crockpot of hot soup at a party. She received burns on her neck, chest, left arm and right hand.

During her recovery at the burn unit at Loyola University Medical Center, she learned about a camp in Illinois for burn-injured children, Camp “I Am Me.” The camp provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment for young burn survivors with opportunities to build their self-esteem.

Reese first attended camp last year and recently attended for a second time. Now, she is a featured participant in the camp’s 25th anniversary campaign, “25+ Faces for 25 Years.”

That is bad advice for bridge players. We must aim at success – the number of tricks we need to make or break a contract. That is our target.

In this deal, West is defending against four spades. He leads the diamond king. South takes that trick and cashes two of dummy’s heart winners to shed his diamond loser.

Then declarer runs the spade eight.

How should West defend?

After South opened with a weak two-bid, promising some 6-10 highcard points and a decent six-card suit, North used the two-no-trump artificial inquiry. Since South had a maximum, he rebid three diamonds to show his “feature” (typically the ace or king) in that suit. West doubled to assure a diamond lead should North become the declarer.

West can see only two certain defensive tricks: his aces. If South had started with three diamonds, he would have taken another pitch on one of dummy’s hearts.

So, declarer is marked with 6-1-2-4 distribution. And the bidding has made it clear that East, not South, holds the club king.

West should win the first trump trick and shift to his club three, low showing interest in the suit. East wins with his king and returns his club six.

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump efficiently enough to meet the body’s need for blood.

As a result, tissues and organs don’t get enough nutrition, and fluid builds up in the lungs and tissues.

The first symptom of heart failure often is fatigue. As the condition progresses, a person may also experience rapid heartbeat, worsening shortness of breath (caused by fluid buildup in the lungs) and fluid buildup in the legs and abdomen.

Dear Abby: My mom turned 60 last month, and I hosted a party at her house for friends and family. As things were winding down, I took a break from cleaning up to look over the birthday cards from well-wishers that were displayed on a living room table. Among them was a big, gorgeous card from “Cassie,” a woman around my mother’s age, who I always thought was nothing more than an acquaintance.

As I read the message she had written inside, my jaw dropped. While not pornographic, her message made clear that she and Mom have an intimate physical relationship that has been going on for a while.

I have not discussed the card with Mom, but I suspect she knows I saw it. Lately, I have canceled our weekly lunches together. I don’t have anything against gays; I believe they are entitled to a love life just like the rest of us.

But in this case, I can’t help but feel betrayed. Mom was married for 32 years, bore three children and seemed happy. Was this all a lie?

My biggest concern is, if this relationship becomes permanent, how do I explain it to my children – or worse, my brothers, whose views are conservative and some might say bigoted. I can’t help but wonder if Mom left the card out so she could open a can of worms in my lap. How should I approach this? Please help.
