One remains missing after boat accident in Grundy County

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Search and rescue teams suspended their search late Sunday night on the Illinois River near Coal City for a missing 20-yearold white female as storms rolled into town and daylight waned.

“Flooding is hampering our efforts and access to the river,” said Lt. Nick Doerfler, public information officer with Coal City Fire Department. “We will resume with recovery efforts on Monday morning.”

Authorities were called at 3:27 p.m. after a Bayliner pleasure craft became lodged in Dresden Dam gate, which is a couple miles east of Morris on the Illinois River, Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said. Rescue boats, as well as a Coast Guard helicopter, were observed going out to look for those who had been on the boat.

Division 15 water rescue personnel tow in a Bayliner pleasure craft into Stratton Park that was involved in an accident at Dresden Dam on Sunday. Three people were rescued; a fourth, who authorities said was a 20-year-old woman, was missing as of Sunday night. other pleasure craft; all were taken to Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers by ambulance, according to authorities.

Those three were treated and released and returned to Stratton State Park while awaiting word of the rescue efforts. Their names have not been released by authorities.

The Department of Natural

Resources is in charge of the investigation.

Water rescue personnel and aid were brought in from Troy, Newark, Morris, Plainfield, Coal City, Braidwood, Minooka, Channahon, Wilmington and Peotone fire departments, along with Grundy Emergency Management Agency to coordinate in the search.

Couple ready to open second Shrimp Barn

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Owners of the Shrimp Barn in Minooka will open a second restaurant in downtown Plainfield.

Shrimp Barn will open on Independence Day weekend in the former home of Lombardo’s, Lazy Lizard and La Fiesta Mexicana on 24136 W. Lockport St. Chef Robert Degen and his wife Susette are opening up the new seafood diner modeled on their restaurant in Minooka that opened in December 2011.

“We like little towns, historical buildings,” Degen said.

“When you walk in, you’re no longer a customer. You’re part of the family.”

Shrimp Barn contains elements of Midwestern and Italian cuisine. Also, the interior

of the restaurant will incorporate sports memorabilia, an old coin-operated jukebox and antiques that will be for sale.

“We try to keep everything as local as possible,” Degen said. “When we were looking for our next location. We looked in Morris and Yorkville.

We weren’t thinking about Plainfield until we drove past the building. That’s when you can tell it was meant to be.”

RE/MAX Agent Mark Batinick said he received a lot of interest in the building, which has been vacant since La Fiesta Mexicana left in January. But he believes the right restaurant is moving in.

“I’m excited about the restaurant because we need a true seafood place,” Batinick said.

Degen said the big draw for the restaurant will be the

low prices for quality seafood meals and the variety available, as well as the customer service.

Uncommon items on the menu for the Minooka location include alligator, walleye, frog legs and Cajun catfish. The trick is Degen has three different fisheries bring in fresh seafood every Tuesday and Thursday.

The Shrimp Barn also will sell sandwiches, pasta, tacos and several craft beers.

“I understand how Plainfield is more high-end,” Degen said, adding that he also may open up another Shrimp Barn location east of Joliet in a couple of years. “But in our place, they get relaxation. Especially on cold days, you come in and see the nice pastel oranges, blue-greens. We want you to feel comfortable.”

LOCAL BRIEF Joliet Denny’s receives ‘green’ recognition

JOLIET – The Denny’s restaurant at 2531 Plainfield Road has become the first restaurant in Will County to earn LEED green building certification, according to a news release.

LEED – Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design – certification recognizes bestin-class building strategies and practices. Of the 20,000 buildings in the world that are LEED-certified, only 38 are restaurants, according to the United States Green Building Council.

Owner Joe Terrell said LEED guidelines were used in every phase of construction, including the use of recycled materials and responsible recycling of all waste materials generated during the project.

Energy efficient appliances as well as many water and energy conservation innovations were included in the building.

Will County Health Department found employees weren’t so healthy

JOLIET – Sree Muppa sits at a desk eight hours a day.

“Most of our jobs are desk jobs,” said Muppa, who works as a communicable disease investigator for the Will County Health Department.

But Muppa’s workday is less sedentary since she joined 34 co-workers in the department’s new organic garden program, an initiative spearheaded by the agency’s Worksite Wellness Committee as a way to promote healthier lifestyles in the workplace.

On June 30, the employees broke ground at the department’s 501 Ella Ave. facility in Joliet, with help from members of the University of Illinois Extension Center in Joliet.

The 18-plot garden is already boosting employee moral, Muppa said.

“The garden is brilliant.

People get to talk and meet.

We compare each other’s plot. There’s a little competition going on,” Muppa said.

“It’s wonderful because you get rewarded when you see the fruit, or the flowers coming out of the ground.”

Employees get to eat the vegetables or fruits they produce, but several share plots, she said.

So far, fruits, herbs, spices and several vegetables, including squash and peppers, have been planted.

Employee Jennifer Gorszczyk serves as chairwoman on the wellness committee, which formed in 2011, after the health department entered into a partnership with Joliet Partners for Healthy Families, a coalition of local organizations aimed at combating obesity in Will County.

wellness committee in late 2011 after Joliet Partners for Healthy Families completed a Community Healthy Living Index assessment on the health department, showing poor results.

“It wasn’t good,” she said.

“There was no focus on the health of the employees whatsoever.”

Since then, the commit-

tee has enacted a number of healthy initiatives, including walking trails, healthier vending machine options, weight loss competitions and poker walks. Walking trails also are located at the health department’s two branches in Bolingbrook and University Park.

The various programs have been successful,

Gorszczyk said. In the past two “Biggest Loser” competitions, 75 employees lost 545 pounds, and a six-week walking competition resulted in 120 people walking 29,069 miles.

The garden is the latest initiative, Gorszczyk said.

“A lot of people don’t have room at their own homes to have a garden. This gives them a place to do it,” she said. “It also gives people time to take breaks, go outside and get physical exercise in.

Vic Reato, spokesman for the health department, said the initiatives benefit both the employer and the employee.

“Healthy employees are happy and productive employees,” he said. “And everyone benefits if we can somehow bring down health insurance premiums that all county employees pay.”

A county-wide employee wellness program also is underway.

Will County this month rolled out a new “Will Be Well” program as part of a collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME union workers in December, said Diane Zigrossi, chairwoman of the County Board’s insurance and personnel committee.

“This will educate employees about their health,” Zigrossi said. “The ultimate goal is a healthier workforce.”

Free on-site screenings will be done to check blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels and BMI levels, Zigrossi said. Health risk questionnaires looking into health history must be filled out by employees and their spouses, she said. All information will remain confidential, she said.

Employees who opt out of the screening or questionnaire will pay an additional $50 a month for their insurance premiums, according to program documents. It will cost an additional $25 a month if their spouses covered by the same insurance plan do not participate.

Joliet U-Haul operator runs into road block City denies permit

bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A West Side motorcycle store’s request for a special use permit to run a U-Haul truck and trailer rental service hit a speed bump last week.

Michael Vlamis, owner of Willy World Cycles, 101 N. Reed St., asked the Joliet City Council on Monday to allow him to continue the U-Haul service that he had unknowingly been operating without city permission for the past five years.

Vlamis told the council that he would allow no more than three trucks or trailers, which would be parked in the lot on the west side of Willy World.

“I’m trying to keep people employed here in Joliet and be a good neighbor and a good citizen,” Vlamis said, noting that the recreational vehicle business has been terrible since the recession.

Willy World is located on Reed Street in Joliet. the U-Haul service about five years ago as a way to supplement revenue. Vlamis said he was unaware that he needed a permit for the business until recently.

Jay McGowan, a homeowner at 106 N. Reed St., presented the council with a petition signed by 20 residents who opposed the permit.

McGowan claimed the U-Haul service promoted vandalism. He cited a March 18 Joliet police report that detailed

four squad cars responding to a suspect attempting to break into trailers at the site.

“We don’t want these kind of people being attracted to our neighborhood because these U-Haul trailers are sitting out there unlocked,” McGowan said. “People break into them.

They get into them and they’re going to party in them and look for anything they can steal out of them.”

Vlamis acknowledged that his business has been broken

into three times and sprayed with graffiti four or five times.

“But I’m stuck there,” Vlamis said. “The city of Joliet moved me there, I bought the building, so that’s on me. I have to live with it.”

Vlamis moved Willy World from a previous East Side location that was acquired by the city as it bought up property to build Silver Cross Field.

McGowan also claimed the business was an eyesore for the neighborhood.

“They drop these things off anywhere in the parking lot,” McGowan said. “If they drop them off on a Saturday night, the rest of the neighborhood gets to look at them all weekend.”

Vlamis countered that the trucks and trailers would be dropped off on the west side of the building, where they will be out of sight of all residents on Reed Street.

Willy World is zoned as a B-1 neighborhood business, as is the building north of it, a former florist business that is being redeveloped as an adult day care center. A B-3 retail commercial business – Walgreen’s – lies to the to the

south. Single-family homes are to the east and west of the building.

“When they built Silver Cross Field, they basically moved Willy World from second base to this location in 2002,” Vlamis said. Vlamis said he bought the business from the original owner in 2004.

In the end, the council unanimously rejected Vlamis’ request. The council’s decision ran counter to recommendations by the zoning board of appeals and city staff to approve the permit.

Councilman Jim McFarland said the bigger issue revolved around having a retail business zoned as a neighborhood business.

“You’re doing a good business, but it’s making an impact,” McFarland said. “We had to put two stop signs up there to help control the traffic.”

Mayor Tom Giarrante noted that he used to live on John Street, about a block away from the business.

“If I still lived there, I wouldn’t want U-Haul trailers there either,” Giarrante said.

Candidates join the race for Will County Board

Monday is the last day to file to run in the Will County Board election.

While most candidates were in the March primary election, there still are opportunities to file for open spots in the ballot. Below are profiles of three candidates who have joined the County Board race since the primary.

Gretchen Fritz

Gretchen Fritz, 41, was nominated by Plainfield and Wheatland ReGretchen publicans earliFritz er this month to run alongside former Wheatland Township Board member Darren Bennefield, appointed previously to replace resigning Lee Ann Goodson.

Bennefield’s appointment is temporarily until the November election.

A member of the National Rifle Association, Fritz said she is a firm believer in the Second Amendment’s right

to bear arms and still has her very first target that she bore a bullet hole back in 1997. It now hangs above her work desk, she said.

Fritz, who serves as a deacon at Fellowship Chapel of the Christian & Missionary Alliance in Bolingbrook, said she’s a hard worker who will put her constituents’ concerns above all else.

“In a lot of instances, the government just really needs to get out of the way and let people pursue success and opportunities,” she said.

Raddatz was appointed earlier this month to run on the November ballot alongside Democrat incumbent Reed

Two candidates are elected from each of the County Board’s 13 districts, and each party can put up two candidates.

Raddatz said she wants to represent the “families of the county” who have children in the school system and go to work.

“It really drives me nuts when people sit there on the couch and complain and complain,” she said. “This is my chance to actually go out there and make a change.”

Raddatz is involved in community activities, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Parent Teacher Organization in Plainfield.

Lincoln-Way teacher gets statewide recognition

fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Linda Egnatz, a teacher at Lincoln-Way North High School, was among 30 educators who received statewide recognition earlier this month.

Egnatz teaches Spanish and literature at the Frankfort high school. She also teaches at DePaul University in Chicago.

She and the other teachers were recognized for their work by the Illinois State Board of Education and the state’s top teachers unions at a luncheon June 11 at the governor’s mansion in Springfield.

The teachers were there because they were chosen as the best in their field by a number of state and national education groups. Last year, Egnatz was awarded the 2014 National Teacher of the Year by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Joining other education professionals who earned distinction for their work was exciting for Egnatz. She said all the teachers – despite differences in the subjects they taught – shared common goals, such as putting students first and pushing for innovation in the classroom.

Recognition for a teacher’s hard work doesn’t come often, Egnatz said. But she does get letters from past students about the difference she’s made in their lives, along with thank-you notes from parents.

“When it comes along, it’s appreciated,” Egnatz said.

Even so, Egnatz said she feels the political climate today is not a good one for teachers, and work done in and out of the classroom is not always recognized.

“Most teachers spend a lot of time teaching, but they also spend a lot of time outside of the classroom grading and assessing students,” she said.

Teachers also develop their skills and stay current on their specialties by participating in professional organizations and conferences,

Egnatz said.

“I think that sort of professional, ongoing development is really important,” she said.

Scott Tingley, Lincoln-Way district superintendent, said the Lincoln-Way schools are proud of Egnatz’s achievements.

“I think it’s quite an accomplishment for her,” he said, “and I think it also speaks for our district, as well.”

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski has announced a $2 million grant for Argonne National Laboratory to develop hybrid fuel cell technology.

The technology would be used to generate electricity and produce liquid fuel.

“This cutting edge work is another step toward American energy independence and a catalyst for economic growth and job creation,” Lipinski said in a news release announcing

the grant.

Lipinski is a member of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.

The Argonne project is funded through a program titled “Reliable Electricity Based on Electrochemical Systems,” or REBELS, which is focused on improving grid stability and reducing carbon dioxide emissions using electrochemical-distributed power generation systems.

The most common type of hearing loss is sensorineural, in which the inner ear becomes damaged. Sound travels through the ear canal, the ear drum (tympanic membrane), the middle ear, and is transmitted to the inner ear (cochlea). As sound-generated vibrations enter the cochlea, they cause microscopic hair cells to vibrate, which in-turn transmit neuro-electrical impulses to the brain. When these hair cells become damaged, they cannot vibrate in the appropriate way. The resulting impulses to the brain are dampened or garbled, making comprehension difficult or impossible. Yet, Will, at age 5, missing Kurt terribly on a fishing trip, did sway Kurt.

“He never went fishing in Canada again,” Barbara said.

In 1998, Kurt beat stomach cancer. In 2000 and 2001, Kurt underwent stem cell transplants and participated in a research pilot study for multiple myeloma, she said.

In April 2013, Kurt was diagnosed with lung cancer. Still, Kurt only had one thing on his mind: raising his children to adulthood, Barbara said.

Because at his core, Kurt stood for three things, Barbara said: Faith, family and freedom. His Moody Bible training may have enabled Kurt to quote scripture with ease, but he converted to Catholicism (Barbara and the kids are Catholic) so the family could attend church together.

Before his death, Kurt wrote a letter to his children that began with, “You are nothing less than a gift from God.” Barbara felt Kurt being an Eagle Scout contributed to his ideals.

“He believed in all those values of strength, loyalty and living honestly,” Barbara said.

WILMINGTON – Barbara Leinweber of Wilmington was packing up her husband’s books. Topics included horse betting, poker, religion, law and safaris.

But that was Kurt Leinweber, said his friend Keith Aeschliman of Shorewood, an attorney, who met Kurt several times a week for lunch and lively debates.

“He knew a little about everything and a lot about a number of things,” Keith said.

“He could have done anything he wanted to do in life. He was well-versed in almost everything.”

In some ways, Kurt did exactly that. He certainly experienced many sides of life.

For instance, Kurt grew up on a three-flat in Chicago but later bought a small farm in Braidwood and raised Angus steer, lambs, goats, chickens and read up on – and tried to practice – self-sufficiency, Barbara said.

Their children – Will Leinweber of California and Mary Grace Lane of Braidwood – did not always appreciate their father’s commitment to raising all of the family’s food, she added.

“They wanted Kraft Macaroni and Cheese,” Barbara said.

Kurt was a respiratory therapist when Barbara, now a dialysis nurse, met him. While serving in the U.S. Army, he worked as a helicopter mechanic although Kurt was afraid to fly. After flunking out of a junior college, he earned a law degree from Loyola, Barbara said.

Keith said Kurt fought for his clients. Tom Budde of Wilmington, a sergeant with the Will County Sheriff’s department, said Kurt’s defense was vigorous. Public opinion and a person’s stance in the

control and pro-life issues, was a Will County Assistant Public Defender and was involved in Will County Drug Court.

In 2006, Pat Quinn, then the lieutenant governor, presented Kurt with an “Environmental Hero” award for his grassroots campaign again tritium leaks, Barbara said.

Tom, who lived a mile away from Kurt, said their commitment to the criminal justice system bonded them, as did their mutual hobby of fishing.

“I learned a lot from him.

I miss some of our more spirited discussions,” Tom said. “He definitely had an opinion and was not afraid to share it.”

One thing Kurt was not, Keith said, was vocal about his feelings. Keith said that changed when he visited Kurt in the hospital shortly before his death on April 1 at the age of 64.

“He pulled me close and told me he loved me,” Keith said. “I was glad because he gave me a chance to say it back to him.”

As a reporter I’m used to being the one asking questions, so when I was invited to be a guest on the Lynne, Mary and Natalie show on WJOL I have to admit I got a little nervous.

I met the WJOL ladies while covering a story last year, and I know Lynne through the Joliet Autobahn where she is a frequent guest.

I’m a 3rd degree black belt and taekwondo instructor.

I have been studying under Master Kyung Mun at World Family Martial Arts in Shorewood for over nine years.

The whole guest appearance thing came about when mutual friend, Sally Bagley, mentioned the benefits of taekwondo to Lynne. I guess that means I must talk a lot about martial arts to my friends.

Lynne invited me and Master Mun on the Lynne, Mary and Natalie show to talk about martial arts and the benefits.

Also a guest on the show was psychotherapist Pricilla Lynch. She, too, lauded the benefits of martial arts for children to help them learn self-discipline, concentration, focusing, self-respect and respecting others.

Master Mun and I sat in the sound room for the first half hour of the show so we could get a feel of how they did things; we were scheduled to go on sometime after the halfhour break.

During short breaks Natalie

and Lynne (Mary wasn’t on today’s show) tried to make us more comfortable, stressing how the show was like sitting in their living room and chatting. And except for the microphones in our faces and the producer behind the mixing board, it was like good friends having a discussion.

I guess it’s the reporter in me, but once I got behind the microphone my jitters vanished for the most part. I found myself participating in the “conversation” instead of referring to my notes.

In fact, when the producer gave the two-minute and then one-minute cue to end, my mind was wondering how I was going to get in everything I wanted to say.

I can’t say enough about how Natalie and Lynne, even Pricilla, made Master Mun and I feel so much more comfortable than when we started out.

Master Mun got to share a bit about how he first came to America to do an internship while he was in college in South Korea studying martial arts education and sports medicine. And I got to share a few of the great things about World Family Martial Arts and taekwondo in general.

Hats off to Lynne, Mary and Natalie for not only having us as their guests but for creating such a fun and informative format to showcase our great communities every Friday morning on WJOL.

Keane said he offers a “fresh approach” and is willing to “explore new ideas,” on how to bring big businesses and sustainable jobs to Will County.

“We need to encourage

businesses to take Will County into consideration before other areas,” he said. “We have the people. We have people who are educated and willing.

They’re traveling great distances to go to work, but live here. We should be supplying those jobs. We should be booming.”

The Abe Lincoln Motel As the American public took to the road, motor courts, inns and highway motels appeared and catered to the traveling public.

By the late 1940s, most motels were arranged in an open “U”shape or “L”-shape design.

The office no longer was front and center but located to the left or right of the architectural layout. This allowed for increased space for the sign, which was located on its own, away from the motel and near the street.

The Abe Lincoln Motel near Frankfort, built in the late 1950s, is an example of a “L”-shaped design and still operates in it original location today.

Stephanie Kwolek, Kevlar inventor, dies

DOVER, Del. – Police Lt. David Spicer took four .45-caliber slugs to the chest and arms at point-blank range and lived to tell about it. Like thousands of other police officers and soldiers shot in the line of duty, he owes his life to a woman in Delaware by the name of Stephanie Kwolek.

Kwolek, who died Wednesday at 90, was a DuPont Co. chemist who in 1965 invented Kevlar, the lightweight, stronger-than-steel fiber used in bulletproof vests and other body armor around the world.

A pioneer as a woman in a heavily male field, Kwolek made the breakthrough while working on specialty fibers at a DuPont laboratory in Wilmington. At the time, DuPont was looking for strong, lightweight fibers that could replace steel in automobile tires and improve fuel economy.

“I knew that I had made a discovery,” Kwolek said in an interview several years ago that was included in the Chemical Heritage Foundation’s “Women in Chemistry” series. “I didn’t shout ‘Eureka,’ but I was very excited, as was the whole laboratory excited, and management was excited because we were looking for something new, something different, and this was it.”

Spicer was wearing a Kevlar vest when he was shot by a drug suspect in 2001. Two rounds shattered his left arm, ripping open an artery. A third was deflected by his badge. The last one hit his nametag, bending it into a horseshoe shape, before burrowing into his vest, leaving a 10-inch tear.

“If that round would have entered my body, I wouldn’t be talking to you right now,” the Dover police officer said.

While recovering from his wounds, Spicer spoke briefly by telephone with Kwolek and thanked her.

“She was a tremendous woman,” he said.

CEO and Chairwoman Ellen Kullman described Kwolek, who retired in 1986, as “a creative and determined chemist and a true pioneer for women in science.”

Kwolek is the only female employee of DuPont to be awarded the company’s Lavoisier Medal for outstanding technical achievement.

She was recognized as a “persistent experimentalist and role model.”

“She leaves a wonderful legacy of thousands of lives saved and countless injuries prevented by products made possible by her discovery,” Kullman said.

During the “Women in Chemistry” interview, Kwolek recounted the development of Kevlar. She said she found a solvent that was able to dissolve long-chain polymers into a solution that was much thinner and more watery than other polymer solutions. She persuaded a skeptical colleague to put the solution into a spinneret, which turns liquid polymers into fibers.

“We spun it and it spun beautifully,” she recalled.

“It was very strong and very stiff, unlike anything we had made before.”

The exceptionally tough fibers she produced were several times stronger by weight than steel. So strong, according to friend and former colleague Rita Vasta, that DuPont had to get new equipment to test the tensile strength.

“DuPont was big in Nylon, Dacron,” Vasta explained. “This was way stronger than any of those types of fibers.”

Spicer and more than 3,100 other police officers are members of a “Survivors Club” formed by DuPont and the International Association of Chiefs of Police to promote the wearing of body armor.

While Kevlar has become synonymous with protective vests and helmets, it has become a component material in products ranging from airplanes and armored military vehicles to cellphones and sailboats.

She met her husband, Albert Mavec and started a new life becoming a wife, mother and nurse. She worked as a psychiatric nurse for Presence St. Joseph Medical Center for 25 years.

Paula is survived by her husband, Albert, of 51 years; and six children, Monica Morrissette, Joe (Marylynn) Mavec, Jana (Mark) Hlade, Meka (Eric) Celidonio, Mike (Stacy) Mavec and Marty (Emily) Mavec. She leaves behind eleven grandchildren, Jared and Melanie Morrissette, Samantha and Marty Mavec, Megan, Kyle and Sarah Hlade, Ana and Trey Celidonio, and Grace and Michael Mavec. She is also survived by six sisters, three brothers, one sister-in-law, and numerous relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by her parents, Pavel and Marija Bajda; sisters, Stanislava Bajda and Teresa Vlaisavljevich; brother, Stefan Bajda; niece, Andrea Babic; and brothersin-law, Dujo Babic and Felix Mavec.

Among numerous other charitable and service organizations, Paula was a member of St. Joseph Church in Joliet, Slovenian Union of America, Slovenian Catholic League and the Slovenian Catholic/ Cultural Center.

Paula’s favorite hobbies were gardening, reading, and politics.

But the most important aspect in her life was her family.

A Celebration of Paula’s life will begin on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 with a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 12:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 416 N. Quinn approves minimum wage ballot question

CHICAGO – Illinois voters will get a chance to voice their opinion on raising the minimum wage under a ballot measure Gov. Pat Quinn signed Sunday.

The measure is non-binding, but Quinn and other Democrats who want to raise the rate say it will give them the support they need to move the idea through the state Legislature. The question for the Nov. 4 ballot asks whether Illinois should boost its minimum wage for people over age 18 from $8.25 to $10 by 2015.

It’s been a prominent issue in the 2014 campaign for Quinn, who is seeking a second full term, and for Democrats across the U.S. However, legislative attempts to increase Illinois’ rate have failed.

Republicans and some Democrats in swing suburban and downstate districts have resisted the push, which they and some business leaders say could kill jobs and make Illinois less competitive with states where the minimum wage is lower. Illinois’ rate is $1 higher than the national rate.

But Quinn said raising the wage will help working people and boost the economy by putting more money in workers’ pockets.

Almasri said some smokers at other colleges may simply walk across a street to get off campus, but he says that’s not possible at the 2,600-acre SIU campus.

His organization surveyed students, held open forums and listened to ideas, and Almasri said they heard feedback that smoking areas would be more appropriate and reasonable than an all-out ban.

University spokesman Doug McIlhagga said SIU-Edwardsville would comply with the new law, which first requires an implementation committee to be formed by next January.

University system president Randy Dunn said he met with Almasri in May and heard the requests for designated smoking areas on the large campus.

Ill. fire departments get more help to buy trucks

MOLINE – Illinois fire departments are getting more help to buy new trucks.

Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Saturday raising the cap on how much money municipalities can borrow from the state at no or low interest for truck purchases.

The law takes effect immediately. It raises the 11-year-old loan program’s borrowing cap from $250,000 to $350,000.

The change reflects the increased cost of fire equipment since the law was last updated.

Departments can use the loans for fire trucks, engines and brush trucks, which are all-terrain vehicles often used to fight wildfires.

The program has loaned out $25 million since it began.

Ill. private schools must now run shooting drills

ROCKFORD – Private schools in Illinois will now have to conduct annual drills to prepare for potential school shootings and review their security preparations.

Legislation signed into law Saturday brings the state’s 1,800 private schools in line with requirements already in place for public schools.

The law is one of the three pieces of legislation that Gov. Pat Quinn signed Saturday during a visit to a middle school in Rockford. The other two also deal with school safety.

One allows a state grant program for security improvements to continue.

The other allows public school districts to share their emergency plans with first responders

through devices such as smart phones. That legislation takes effect Jan. 1.

The others going into effect immediately.

Man gets 18 years in prison for sex attack of girl

BELLEVILLE – An East St. Louis man has been ordered to spend 18 years in prison for kidnapping a 12-year-old girl and sexually attacking her.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that 44-year-old Terry Pittman already had been convicted of St. Clair County charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery of a child.

Pittman’s criminal history includes convictions of drug, battery and weapons counts.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Friends mourn hiker who ‘showed us the way’

SEATTLE – Friends on Sunday mourned a well-known outdoors writer and photographer who had been missing for three days in Mount Rainier National Park before searchers said they recovered a body of a woman.

The National Park Service said it will be up to the Pierce County medical examiner to confirm that the body found Saturday afternoon was that of 70-yearold Karen Sykes of Seattle.

It was discovered in an area where searchers were looking for Sykes, and they ended the three-day rescue effort after finding it.

“For a lot of local hikers, it’s an extreme loss,” said Greg Johnston, who edited a “Trail of the Week” column she wrote for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. “For decades, she showed us the way, and now that’s gone.”

Sykes was prominent in the Northwest hiking community for her trail reviews and photographs, for her book on hiking western Washington and for leading group outings. Friends said she found sanctuary in the wilderness.

Shopping perk for most veterans considered

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The U.S. military is looking into allowing all of the nation’s veterans who served honorably to shop online at exchanges that sell discounted, name-brand goods – a perk that is currently available only to a small minority.

The change is proposed by the Army & Air Force Exchange

Service director as a way to show appreciation for veterans and to offset a loss of revenue as troops return from overseas, where they had few alternatives but to shop at the military retail stores.

For now, the online shopping is generally limited to current service members, veterans who served for 20 years or longer and their family members. Tom Shull, the director of the exchange service, said 20 million veterans would be affected if the Defense Department allows all veterans who served honorably to use the shopping website.

3 Quebec escapees captured in Montreal

MONTREAL – A heavily-armed SWAT team raided an upscale Montreal condominium early Sunday to capture the three men police say made a bold escape by helicopter from a Quebec jail two weeks ago.

The men, who were facing murder and gangsterism charges before the jailbreak, were found in a posh 10th-floor condo with a stunning view of the city in a ritzy new development in Old Montreal, just steps from the historic waterfront.

Yves Denis, 35, Denis Lefebvre, 53, and Serge Pomerleau, 49, were arrested after police busted open the door to enter the residence around 1:30 a.m., Quebec provincial police said. They are due in court in Quebec City on Monday to face fresh charges, but police did not spell out what the new accusations would be.

Militants blitz through Iraq’s western desert

BAGHDAD – Sunni militants have blitzed through the vast desert of western Iraq, capturing four towns and three border crossings and deepening the predicament of the Shiite-led government in Baghdad led by Nouri al-Maliki.

The latest military victories – including two border posts captured Sunday, one along the frontier with Jordan and the other with Syria – considerably expanded territory under the militants’ control just two weeks after the al-Qaida breakaway group began swallowing up chunks of northern Iraq, heightening pressure on al-Maliki to step aside.

The lightening offensive by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant takes the group closer to its dream of carving out an Islamic state straddling both Syria and Iraq. Moreover, controlling the borders

with Syria will help it supply fellow fighters there with weaponry looted from Iraqi warehouses, significantly reinforcing its ability to battle beleaguered Syrian government forces.

If the Sunni insurgents succeed in their quest to secure an enclave, they could further unsettle the already volatile Middle East and serve as a magnet for Jihadists from around the world – much like al-Qaida attracted extremists in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.

President Barack Obama, in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation” aired Sunday, warned that the Islamic State could grow in power and destabilize the region. Washington, he said, must remain “vigilant” but would not “play whack-a-mole and send U.S. troops ... wherever these organizations pop up.”

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, in the Jordanian capital on Sunday, also weighed in.

The Islamic State, he warned, is a “threat not only to Iraq, but to the entire region.”

The U.S. is looking for ways to work with Middle Eastern nations, most of them led by Sunni governments, to curb the Sunni militant group’s growth. Officials in the United States and the Middle East have suggested privately that al-Maliki must leave office before Iraq’s Sunnis will believe that their complaints of marginalization by the Shiite-led government in Baghdad will be addressed.

Al-Maliki, in office since 2006, has shown no sign he is willing to step down. However, he has been uncharacteristically silent since Obama and Iraq’s top Shiite cleric both urged the prime minister last week to form an inclusive government that promotes the interests of all of Iraq’s ethnic and religious groups.

Iraq’s newly elected parliament must meet by June 30, when it will elect a speaker and a new president, who, in turn, will ask the leader who enjoys the support of a simple majority in the 328-seat chamber to form a new government.

VA falls short on female medical issues

SAN FRANCISCO – Already pilloried for long wait times for medical appointments, the beleaguered Department of Veterans Affairs has fallen short of another commitment: to attend to the needs of the rising ranks of female veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, many of them of child-bearing age.

Even the head of the VA’s office of women’s health acknowledges that persistent shortcomings remain in caring for the 390,000 female vets seen last year at its hospitals and clinics – despite an investment of more than $1.3 billion since 2008, including the training of hundreds of medical professionals in the fundamentals of treating the female body.

According to an Associated Press review of VA internal documents, inspector general reports and interviews: • Nationwide, nearly one in four VA hospitals does not

have a fulltime gynecologist on staff. And about 140 of the 920 community-based clinics serving veterans in rural areas do not have a designated women’s health provider, despite the goal that every clinic would have one.

• When community-based clinics refer veterans to a nearby university or other private medical facility to be screened for breast cancer, more than half the time their mammogram results are not provided to patients within two weeks, as required under VA policy.

• Female veterans have been placed on the VA’s Electronic Wait List at a higher rate than male veterans. All new patients who cannot be scheduled for an appointment in 90 days or less are placed on that wait list.

• And according to a VA presentation last year, female veterans of child-bearing age were far more likely to be given medications that can cause birth defects than were women being treated through a private HMO.

“Are there problems?

Yes,” said Dr. Patricia Hayes, the VA’s chief consultant for women’s health in an AP interview. “The good news for our health care system is that as the number of women increases dramatically, we are going to continue to be able to adjust to these circumstances quickly.”

The 5.3 million male veterans who used the VA system in fiscal year 2013 far outnumbered female patients, but the number of women receiving care at VA has more than doubled since 2000. The tens of thousands of predominantly young, female veterans returning home has dramatically changed the VA’s patient load, and the system has yet to fully catch up. Also, as the total veteran population continues to decrease, the female veteran population has been increasing year after year, according to a 2013 VA report.

ABA: Lawyers can scour jurors’ social media sites

The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO – Lawyers have been given the green light to scan the social media sites of jurors.

The American Bar Association says it’s ethical for lawyers to scour online for publicly available musings of citizens called for jury service – and even jurors in deliberations.

But the ABA does warn lawyers against actively “following” or “friending” jurors or otherwise invading their private Internet areas.

Though judges now universally admonish jurors to refrain from discussing trials on social media, the nationwide lawyers group for the first time is addressing how deeply attorneys, their investigators and their consultants can probe for information that might signal

leanings of potential jurors, or unearth juror misconduct during trials.

Jurors’ online postings have disrupted many legal proceedings over the years, causing mistrials and special hearings over the effects of Facebook musings, tweets and blog writings about their trial experiences. Lawyers and judges have also been wrangling over how far attorneys can go in assembling a jury with help from online research of jurors’ social media habits.

A few judges have denied lawyers permission to research social media sites as overly invasive while others have allowed it. One company has gone so far as to develop a software product that promises to create a juror profile through social media posts and monitor jurors during the trial.

tee began reviewing the issue about two years ago and concluded in April that looking at Facebook posts, Twitter tweets and other information gathered passively is ethical research.

“It’s like any other publicly available information,” said Donald Lundberg, an Indianapolis, Indiana, attorney who helped draft the ABA’s opinion.

Lundberg said one of the thornier issues for the committee was whether lawyers could view social media sites that notify members that they have been searched.

Ultimately, the ABA committee decided a LinkedIn search was ethically sound, which runs counter to an opinion issued by the New York City Bar Association in 2010 that said any notice sent to a potential juror about a search amounts to an unauthorized communication.

The strategic initiatives, which sprang from recommendations issued six years ago to enhance women’s health system-wide, have kick started research about women veterans’ experience of sexual harassment, assault or rape in a military setting; established working groups about how to build prosthetics for female soldiers; and even led to installation of women’s restrooms at the more than 1,000 VA facilities.

Yet enduring problems with the delivery of care for women veterans are surfacing now amid the growing criticism of the VA’s handling of patient care nationwide and allegations of misconduct, lengthy wait times and potential unnecessary deaths.

Used to treating the men who served in Vietnam, Korea or World War II, many of the

VA’s practitioners until a few years ago were unaccustomed to treating menopause or giving advice about birth control.

The study on distribution of prescription medication that could cause birth defects is illustrative of the lagging awareness; one of every two women veterans has received medication from a VA pharmacy that could cause birth defects, compared to one in every six women who received drugs care through a private health care system, said the study’s author, Eleanor Bimla Schwarz, a senior medical expert on reproductive health with VA. Schwarz, who also directs women’s health research at the University of Pittsburgh, pointed out that while she does not believe any of the veterans surveyed were pregnant at the time, it is critical to keep in mind that many new female veterans are of child-bearing age, a higher percentage are on medication than in the general population and the majority of these women are not on contraception.

Runaway S. Korean soldier who killed 5 surrounded

SEOUL, South Korea – A day after trading gunfire, troops Monday tightened a cordon around a runaway South Korean soldier who killed five comrades at an outpost near the border with North Korea.

Officials said the military was using loudspeakers overnight to try to persuade the sergeant, identified only by his surname Yim, to surrender. Yim’s parents were also brought to the forest about 6 miles from the border outpost to talk to him, according to a Defense Ministry official who asked not to be named, citing department rules.

One platoon leader was wounded when Yim fired Sunday on the military personnel closing in on him, the official said. Troops fired back. Villagers in the area were warned not to leave their houses. The head of a

nearby village, Jang Seokkwon, said that he heard gunshots ring out about 10 times Sunday.

Yim threw a grenade and then opened fire Saturday night with his standard issue K2 assault rifle at the outpost near the North Korean border in Gangwon province, east of Seoul, killing five fellow soldiers and wounding seven others, the military said.

Yim, who was scheduled to be discharged from the military in September, fled with his weapon, but it wasn’t clear how much live ammunition he had.

A Defense Ministry official confirmed Yim was considered a “protected and watched soldier,” which means he needed special attention among servicemen.

According to the official, the South Korean military assigns such status based on servicemen’s periodical personality tests.

LOS ANGELES – The West Coast ports that are America’s gateway for hundreds of billions of dollars of trade with Asia and beyond are no stranger to labor unrest and even violence.

Now, the contract that covers nearly 20,000 dockworkers is set to expire, and businesses that trade in everything from apples to iPhones are worried about disruptions just as the crush of cargo for the back-to-school and holiday seasons begins.

With contentious issues including benefits and job security on the table, smooth sailing is no guarantee.

On one side is the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, with its tradition of fierce activism dating to the Great Depression, when two of its members were killed during a strike. On the other is the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents shipping lines and operators of terminals at 29 West Coast ports.

Both acknowledge that they are unlikely to agree on a new contract before the current one expires June 30, but they plan to negotiate past that deadline.

That would fit the pattern from contract talks in 2008 and 2002.

In 2002, negotiators didn’t reach an agreement until around Thanksgiving, after an impasse that led to a 10-day lockout and a big disruption in trade.

The union’s total control over the labor pool means huge bargaining leverage, which negotiators have parlayed into white-collar wages and perks

for blue-collar work. A full-time longshoreman earns about $130,000 a year, while foremen earn about $210,000, according to employer data. Workers pay nearly nothing for health coverage that includes no premiums and $1 prescriptions.

Neither side has publicly discussed progress on negotiations that began May 12 in San Francisco, which is headquarters to the union and the maritime association.

Twelve years ago, the shutdown had a lasting impact on how products moved in and out of the United States. Hulking cranes idled. Ships anchored in San Francisco Bay and outside ports from Los Angeles to Seattle. Economists estimated the impact at $1 billion each day.

Even after trade resumed, retailers – with their just-intime supply chain – worried that West Coast ports risked becoming a bottleneck. Companies looked to Gulf Coast and East Coast ports, which courted them by upgrading facilities.

“They can’t afford to have their goods hung up either out on the sea or on the docks,” said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation.

Between 2002 and last year, the portion of shipping containers that came into the U.S. through West Coast ports dropped from 50 percent to 44 percent, according to a study

by Martin Associates, a firm that analyzes transportation systems. Imports to the Gulf of Mexico and the Northeast increased.

U.S. gas prices rise slightly to $3.71 a gallon CAMARILLO, Calif. – A survey says the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. has risen by two cents over the past two weeks to $3.71.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that crude oil prices rose over jitters about Iraqi oil production as violence there grows.

Much of that increase hasn’t been passed on to consumers yet, and prices could increase over the coming weeks.

The survey taken Friday shows the average price for a gallon of midgrade gas was $3.90 and the average price for a gallon of premium was $4.05. Diesel averaged $3.95 a gallon.

Of cities surveyed in the continental U.S., Tucson, Arizona, had the lowest average price at $3.37 a gallon. Chicago had the highest average at $4.15 a gallon.

Crews fighting Navajo blaze search for hot spots

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Hundreds of firefighters spent Sunday scouring steep and rugged terrain just east of the Arizona-New Mexico border for any hot spots left from a wildfire that has scorched more than 22 square miles of the Navajo Nation.

Some pockets of pinon and juniper still were smoldering and flames were creeping along the interior of the Assayii Lake Fire. But many parts have started to cool down, giving crews a chance to mop up along the edges of the blaze.

“They’re going through and trying to identify any hot spots at all to the point where they’re digging and taking off their glove and feeling it to make sure it has cooled completely down,” fire information officer Patricia Bean said.

Containment reached 60 percent Sunday and confidence was growing among firefighters since their lines held against brisk winds Saturday.

Few consequences for child immigrants

WASHINGTON – Thousands of immigrant children fleeing poverty and violence in Central America to cross alone into the United States can live in American cities, attend public schools and possibly work here for years without consequences.

The chief reasons are an overburdened, deeply flawed system of immigration courts and a 2002 law intended to protect children’s welfare, an Associated Press investigation finds.

Driving the dramatic increases in these immigrants is the recognition throughout Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador that children who make the dangerous trip can effectively remain in the U.S. for years before facing even a moderate risk of deportation.

The Obama administration estimates it will catch 90,000 children trying to illegally cross the Mexican border without their parents by the end of the current budget year in September. Last year, the government

The situation is widely perceived as becoming a humanitarian crisis at the border. The system is now so overwhelmed that children are being housed in Border Patrol facilities illequipped to handle them.

The government has asked the military to open temporary

shelters in Texas, Oklahoma and California.

U.S. officials, including the Homeland Security secretary, the White House domestic policy council director and the Customs and Border Protection commissioner have described immigrant families’ concerns about education, jobs and personal safety as driving the rise in border crossings.

Only recently have officials acknowledged that perceptions that these children may be allowed to stay or that Congress soon may relax U.S. immigration laws – which is highly unlikely – may also be responsible.

The AP’s investigation, based on interviews, court records and federal data, found that such perceptions are understandable because of America’s broken system.

“That misinformation is causing some people who are in a rather desperate situation to risk their lives to come to the United States border expecting that they’ll be able to stay in this country. That is simply not true,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Friday.

Putin calls for compromise in Ukraine

The Associated Press MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly expressed support Sunday for Ukraine’s declaration of a cease-fire in its battle against pro-Russian separatists and called on both sides to negotiate a compromise.

Putin said such a compromise must guarantee the rights of the Russian-speaking residents of eastern Ukraine, who must feel like they are “an integral part” of their own country.

Putin’s statement appeared to signal that he sees their future in Ukraine.

Separatists in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions have declared independence and asked to join Russia. Moscow has rebuffed their appeals, but is seen by Ukraine and the West as actively supporting the insurgency. Putin’s conciliatory words came as Russia began large-scale military exercises and after NATO accused Rus-

sia of moving troops back toward the Ukrainian border.

Putin appears determined to keep up the pressure to force the Kiev government to give the eastern industrial regions more powers and to prevent Ukraine from moving too close to the European Union or NATO. But he also wants to avoid more punishing sanctions from the U.S. and particularly from the E.U., whose leaders will meet Friday in Brussels, and therefore needs to be seen as cooperating with efforts to de-escalate the conflict.

The Kremlin initially dismissed the peace plan that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko laid out Friday. But in a statement issued late Saturday, Putin said he welcomed the cease-fire and Poroshenko’s “intention to take other concrete steps to reach a peaceful settlement.”

As part of his plan, Poroshenko suggested a decentralization of power to give the re-

gions more political authority.

He also proposed new local and parliamentary elections, and measures to protect the language rights of Russian speakers in the east.

Putin was more specific Sunday, when he spoke publicly following ceremonies commemorating the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941.

“That President Poroshenko announced a truce is without a doubt an important part of a final settlement, without which no agreement can be reached, and there is no doubt that Russia will support this intention, but in the end the most important thing is a political process,” Putin said.

Putin discussed the ceasefire Sunday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, Merkel’s office and the Kremlin said.

“After the Russian government too referred to the ceasefire in positive terms, the inter-

locutors emphasized the need for all sides to abide by it now and for a political dialogue to be put in motion,” Merkel’s office said in a statement. “Another topic of the conversation was the issue of securing the Ukrainian-Russian border.”

In Kiev, Poroshenko also addressed his nation on the day which Ukrainians and Russians mourn the millions who died during World War II. He called for peace, but urged his compatriots to stand strong and united.

“It was so during the violent struggle against the Nazis and it should be the same now,” Poroshenko said. “Facing a real threat, we must unite even more and secure our historical choice, defend our right to live freely on our land.”

Also Sunday, a few hundred pro-Ukrainian activists marched outside Kiev Pechersk Lavra, a revered Orthodox monastery, which was guarded by riot police, some on horseback.

VA issues demand solutions

The unearthing of major issues with our nation’s veterans’ health care system must spur major changes. It’s not going to blow over. No longer can it be swept under the rug.

Congress worked last week to pass legislation that would provide more money for VA hospitals. That’s the right move.

A Senate bill, which passed, 93-3, would authorize about $35 billion over three years to pay for outside care for veterans. It also would allow for the hiring of hundreds of doctors and nurses and lease 26 new health facilities in 17 states and Puerto Rico. The House approved a similar measure earlier in the week with a unanimous vote.

The White House said President

Barack Obama supports the Senate bill.

They’re all right. The VA system needs more money, more people and more locations. It’s the only way to fix this badly broken system.

The Veterans Affairs Department released an audit this week showing that more than 57,000 veterans have had to wait at least three months for initial appointments. An additional 64,000 veterans who asked for appointments over the past decade never got them.

Three Republican senators were the only “no” votes in either house for this week’s legislation, arguing the bill writes a blank check. They voiced concerns about oversight of the funds and the ability to rein in

the spending.

Those are realistic concerns, and it’s Congress’ job to ensure the money allotted for the VA is used properly and monitored closely.

Our veterans are entitled to nearly unlimited care. That’s the blank check we owe them.

It doesn’t mean veterans should be able to use the VA for any and all medical issues at a moment’s notice.

It means they should have every resource available to them in a reasonable time frame. When veterans need medical attention, they should get the very best as soon as possible.

St. Joe’s Thunder finishes perfect season

cherron@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Winning every game you play in a conference schedule and then in the subsequent league tournament is an extremely difficult feat for any baseball team.

That’s especially the case when you have to play 30 games, which is how often St. Joe’s Thunder competed in the DuPage River Pony Conference regular season and playoffs.

But Sunday, coach Jamie Bebar’s squad completed that impressive accomplishment when they jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Whiteford Dale Athletic Club and went on to capture an 11-4 victory in a contest that was postponed Saturday because of bad weather.

St. Joe’s becomes just the third DuPage River team since 1982 to go undefeated in the regular season and playoffs.

After going 27-0 in the regular season, the Thunder went 3-0 in the tournament to join Channahon (1984) and Crest Hill (1990) in the exclusive company.

“I told the guys after the game that at any level of competition, to be able to go unbeaten is something to be proud of and hopefully these guys remind themselves of that as the years go by,” Bebar said. “I’ve been with a lot of these kids since they were eight years old and my intention has never to win a game, it’s about teaching these guys how to play the game the right way and I’m more proud of that than the wins.

“I’m proud of these guys, they swung the bats all year and they’ve really developed and that makes my job a lot easier. We’ve had a lot of games where they’ve just gone out and played so well that there wasn’t much for to do. All year long, up and down the lineup kids stepped up and contributed and that’s a big reason why we’ve gone undefeated.”

St. Joe’s took control in the bottom of the second when it scored five times. Nick Pauly (2 for 4) singled home the first run and Daniel Gonzalez added a two-run single a bit later.

After a run on an error, Zach Bebar brought in the fifth score on an infield grounder.

After Whiteford got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third, St. Joe’s scored twice in the fourth when Nico Gutierrez (2 for 4) singled home one run and Pauly doubled in another.

“We had tons of confidence going into the season and our team chemistry helped us,” said Gutierrez, who was

named the tournament’s MVP. “We’re a good offensive and defensive team that just went out and tried our hardest. I liked how the guys were funny and with how well we got along.

This means a lot since it builds our confidence going into high school.”

The left-handed swinging Hollenbeck hit .265, .298 and .296 his first three seasons with the Redbirds. This spring, he hit .338 with 18 doubles, two home runs, 41 RBIs, a .410 on-base percentage, .458 slugging percentage and .868 OPS. He also had more walks (28) than strikeouts (22).

“Senior year I started being more selective at the plate,” Hollenbeck said.

“Junior year I wasn’t patient enough. This past year it helped me to take a couple of pitches.”

The two home runs don’t seem like much from a middle-of-the-lineup type, but Hollenbeck is not concerned.

“I’m more of a gap-to-gap hitter and I plan to stick with that,” he said. “Like someone said, home runs are accidents. You can’t go up there looking for them. If a home run happens, it happens.

Hollenbeck had a knee injury early in his Illinois State career that limited him

to designated hitter duties for a while.

But he was able to catch full-time the past couple of seasons.

“I think I accomplished a lot at ISU,” he said. “My junior year we accomplished the team goal winning the [Missouri Valley] conference.

As a senior, my goals were go out as best I could and it was the best year I had.”

“I didn’t really expect to be drafted after junior year because I didn’t have that good of a year. Senior year, I wasn’t expecting anything in terms of when I would get drafted or by whom. When the White Sox drafted me, I was really excited. I didn’t care about the round. Once you get started out here [in Arizona], everyone has his opportunity.”

Hollenbeck, who always has had a cannon for a throwing arm, admitted he could have done better defensively in college.

“It definitely was harder after I had a knee injury, although I threw guys out fine,” he said. “I’ll be working hard on defense down here. Sometimes in college, you wouldn’t want to do all the drills. Here you have no choice.”

At 22, Hollenbeck said he is one of the older players with the Sox’s team in Arizona.

“But there are a couple of 23- to 24-year-olds still here who were drafted last year,” he said. “There are some 19-year-olds here and a couple of Dominicans who are only 17.”

Once you’re in a professional organization, the idea is to climb the ladder, regardless of age.

“Whether I move up from here, and when, will pretty much be based on my performance,” Hollenbeck said.

“I’m pretty excited to get things going out here.”

Baseball players with enough potential coming out of high school to interest professional scouts face a difficult decision.

Do they sign at that young age, or do they get an education and play at the college of their choice, feeling they will be better prepared to enter pro baseball when they’re a few years older.

Mike Hollenbeck, an allstate catcher in the Joliet Township combined program, was signed to attend Illinois State University and honored that commitment even after the Boston Red Sox made him their 14thround draft pick in 2010.

Now, after his senior season at ISU, the White Sox, his lifelong favorite team, drafted him in the 23rd round.

He signed and has begun his professional career in the Arizona Rookie League, where the initial games were played over the weekend.

“This is definitely the opportunity I’ve been working for,” Hollenbeck said from Arizona. “The four years at ISU, I don’t regret it at all. It was the right decision for me coming out of high school. I wasn’t ready to sign then. I can tell already that this is a daily grind that I would not have been ready for.”

Hollenbeck also was eligible to be drafted after his junior season at ISU. But even though a couple of organizations indicated they might select him, his name was not called.

“I didn’t really expect to be drafted after junior year because I didn’t have that good of a year,” he said. “Senior year I wasn’t expecting anything in terms of when

Slammers drop final two games at Rockford SUBMITTED REPORTS ROCKFORD – After scoring in the ninth to win, 4-3, Friday at Rockford, the Joliet Slammers were hoping for more of the same during the weekend series.

They got to witness two more dramatic wins, but unfortunately, it was the host Aviators who captured onerun Frontier League victories on each occasion.

The most heartbreaking result of the series happened in Sunday’s finale when Rock-

ford rallied from an 8-4 deficit after seven innings by scoring three times in the eighth and twice in the ninth to claim a 9-8 victory.

On Saturday night, the Aviators tied the score at 2 with a run in the seventh and then added a run in the ninth to capture the 3-2 victory.

In Sunday’s contest, the Slammers (14-18) scored three runs in the fourth and sixth and two more times in the seventh to overcome a four-run fourth by Rockford (15-16).

for 4 and scored three times while Grant DeBruin (two RBIs, two runs) and Max Casper each went 2 for 4 for the Slammers. Seth Granger drove in three runs while Danny Hernandez also had two RBI for Joliet.

Rockford was paced by Danny Gonzalez (4 for 5, two RBIs), Tyger Pederson (3 for 5, three RBI, two runs), Edgar Corcino (3 for 4, two runs) and Brian Bistange (2 for 3, three runs).

The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS – John Danks blamed himself for the very end of a disappointing stay in Minnesota.

Gordon Beckham and Jose Abreu had two RBIs apiece, but Danks struggled Sunday through five-plus innings as the White Sox lost, 6-5, to the Twins.

Joe Mauer and Josh Willingham each drove in two runs for Minnesota, which completed its first four-game sweep of the Sox in 20 years. Kurt Suzuki had three hits.

The Sox grabbed the lead with five runs in the third inning, and Danks retired the Twins in order in the bottom half. But the Twins went ahead to stay with three runs in the fourth.

“I went out there and get us right back in the dugout, unfortunately I give it right back,” Danks said.

Brian Dozier and Mauer each singled home a run before Willingham’s sacrifice fly gave the Twins a 6-5 lead. Danks (66) then got Kendrys Morales to ground out to end the inning, but the damage was done.

Danks allowed 10 hits and walked four.

“Can’t blame anyone else but me on this one, these guys did plenty to win a ballgame,” he said. “I guess I got in the way of that.”

They came into the series just 4½ games out of first and were hoping to make a move in the tight AL Central.

Instead, the Sox (35-41) leave town in last place, two back of Minnesota in fourth. The Sox trail Central-leading Detroit by seven.

Next up is a trip Monday to Baltimore for a three-game series.

“You have to keep it simple, you have to forget the bad stuff and think about the good stuff and go from there,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

“Anytime you sit there and pity yourself, you’re going to get buried. Nobody’s going to do that around here.”

Phil Hughes (8-3) lasted just five innings but got the win.

He allowed eight hits and tied a season high by giving up five earned runs. Hughes also had his first walk in 107 batters in the third.

Danks dropped to 0-6 with a 6.18 ERA in his last eight starts against Minnesota dating to Aug. 17, 2010.

The Slammers only managed four hits and scored one earned run against three Aviators pitchers, who finished with eighth strikeouts.

Russell Mollenhauer singled in Adam Lewis in the fifth while Casper scored on an error in the seventh for the other run for Joliet, which stranded 11 men on base.

The Slammers return to action Tuesday when they open a three-game series at River City. Joliet returns home Friday when it plays host to Gateway.

CHICAGO – The Cubs had a couple of chances after Brandon Cumpton left the game. It wasn’t enough to rally past the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Nate Schierholtz had a run-scoring grounder in the ninth inning, but Mark Melancon got Junior Lake to fly out with a runner on first for the final out in Pittsburgh’s 2-1 victory Sunday.

Cumpton pitched seven scoreless innings and Travis Snider hit a solo homer for the Pirates, who took the last two games of their weekend series in Chicago. The 25-year-old Cumpton (3-2) allowed two hits and walked two while improving to 3-0 with a 3.09 ERA in four starts this month.

The Cubs got the first two men on in the eighth and ninth innings, and only came away with one run.

“The eighth and ninth were the innings in which we created the most stress for them,” manager Rick Renteria said. “They kept grinding.

We gave ourselves a chance there at the end and we still ended up having the potential winning run come to the plate.”

Cumpton (3-2) retired 13 of his first 14 batters. He walked Schierholtz in the fifth inning, but rebounded by get-

ting John Baker to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Ryan Sweeney and starting pitcher Jason Hammel had the Cubs’ only hits off Cumpton, who threw just 87 pitches.

Renteria said the game plan was to be aggressive against Cumpton and when that didn’t work, the offense had to adjust with little to show for it.

“Once they started taking one [pitch], [Cumpton would] go strike one, strike two, so now you’re behind the eight ball and you have to put yourself in a position where you’re fighting,” Renteria said. “Our guys aren’t afraid to hit with two strikes, but Cumpton ended up attacking the zone a little more effectively. All in all, tip your hat to him.”

Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro started the Cubs ninth with consecutive singles, putting runners on the corners.

Melancon then struck out Luis Valbuena and got Schierholtz to hit into a fielder’s choice that drove in Rizzo.

Junior Lake flied out to right to end the game.

Pirates phenom Gregory Polanco went 0 for 3 with a walk, ending his career-opening hitting streak at 11 games.

Hammel (6-5) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Edwards races to first career road course win

The Associated Press SONOMA, Calif. – Carl Edwards has never been known for his road racing skills – to the point team owner Jack Roush had to send him testing in a two-seater so Boris Said could teach him the basics.

A decade later, Edwards finally has a win to show for his hard work.

And, he beat road racing ace Jeff Gordon to get to Victory Lane on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway, where Gordon leads all drivers with five wins.

“My road racing progression, it’s been a pretty long climb,” Edwards said. “The real special part to me was to stand in Victory Lane at Sonoma and have Jeff Gordon come and give me a handshake as the second-place finisher. I grew up watching Jeff Gordon, and specifically watching how he drove this race track and all the successes he had here, so I mean, that’s really super. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Edwards’ win made Roush Fenway Racing the unlikely organization to end Hendrick Motorsports’ five-race winning streak. And, the win came a week after Roush was shut out at Michigan, where the organization failed to put a car in the

MANAUS, Brazil – With Cristiano Ronaldo on the field, a onegoal lead is never safe.

The world player of the year rarely sparkled on a hot and humid night in the jungle, but his inch-perfect stoppage-time cross set up Varela for the equalizing goal Sunday in Portugal’s 2-2 draw against the United States at the World Cup. The Real Madrid winger, who has been playing despite a left knee injury, showed flashes of his best, but his impact was minimal until the final seconds of the match. He curled the ball in to a diving Varela, who headed past Tim Howard to give the Portuguese team a slim hope of advancing to the second round and deny the Americans instant advancement.

“He made a great cross,” said Howard, Ronaldo’s former teammate from their days at Manchester United. “Football’s cruel sometimes.”

The United States now has four points in Group G, the same as Germany. Both Portugal and Ghana have one point. The Americans will face Germany on Thursday in Recife, while Portugal takes on Ghana at the same time in Brasilia.

Llamas, alpacas and camels – oh my!

Lockport farm is home to unusual animals and products

LOCKPORT – Kim Peters of Lockport loves animals so much, she once traded a diamond bracelet for an alpaca.

“My husband [John] said, ‘Whatever makes you happy,’ ” Kim said with a laugh.

Calypso Farm was never intended to be a full-fledged farm with an eclectic mix of animals and a schedule full of tours from youth, senior citizen and homeschool groups, Kim said.

When she and John bought the first 10 acres nearly 30 years ago, it was simply home for them and their Arabian horses. When the Peters decided to sell the horses, Kim, who’s had horses since she was 16, felt lost.

So they bought back one horse, and then an Arabian mare. Over the years, the Peters have added miniature chicken that lay “teeny tiny eggs,” a pot belly pig named Portia, llamas, alpacas, Nigerian dwarf goats, miniature horses and a camel, as well as dozen more acres to house them all.

As Calypso Farm grew, so did the passersby, until Kim found she was spending more time showing off the place than getting her work done.

So she began taking appointments and hosting an annual open house, which attracts about 300 people each year, she said.

“It’s nice when it’s not so busy,” Kim said. “I’m able to talk to more people.”

The hit of this year’s open house – held June 7 and 8 – was an 11-day-old miniature horse named Awesome Calypso Chrome. He showed off by posing for photos, racing around his pen and jumping over his mother whenever she lay down, Kim said. But another animal received quite a bit of notice, too.

with our camel,” Kim said.

“She loves attention.”

After watching a TV show about camels, Kim decided she wanted one. She researched the care of camels, contacted an Indiana camel farm and brought home Calypso when she was just 11 days

old and weighing 90 pounds.

“She sat on my mom’s lap in the van on the way home just like a spoiled little girl,” Kim said. “She’s 12 now and a very big girl.”

Owning a camel is similar to owning a giant, lovable labrador, Kim said. They’re

unintentionally destructive (“There’s not a mean bone in her body,” Kim said), but very sweet, especially when begging for kisses. Calypso is very social and loves entertaining visitors.

“When they walk away, she’ll cry and call out to them to come back,” Kim said.

One day, Kim came home to find that Calypso had ripped off the 10-foot by 8-foot barn door and was out in the yard lying on it.

“That’s what camels do when they like something,”

Kim said. “They lie on it.”

Portia, who lives in her own miniature log cabin, was actually a rescue pig, Kim said. Some kids had bought her without their parents’ permission and hid her in the basement, Kim added. Of course, the parents eventually found her.

“What was bad about it was that pigs are generally shy by nature,” Kim said. “They need to be socialized by having a lot of exposure to people doing different things.”

When Portia was little, she lived in the house with the Peters. When John would watch TV, Portia would jump up on the couch next to him, Kim said. However, the floor was too slippery for her feet to be safe, so Portia eventually went to her own barn. Calypso Farm is full of little barns, Kim said.

“She loves to lie out in the sun,” Kim said.

Each spring, according to the Calypso Farm website at www.calypsollamas.com, the Peters shear their alpacas and llamas. They also sell raw fiber (all colors available), hand-spun yarn (natural, hand-dyed or hand-painted) and combine yarn with other fibers.

The Peters also sell alpacas and llamas, as well as the free range eggs from their miniature chickens, the website said.

Egg colors include pink, green, cream, tan, dark brown and turquoise.

If making the feeding and “cleanup up poop” rounds aren’t enough work for Kim, there’s always a ground squirrel or two that needs rescuing from the pond.

“Seems like every year, there’s a few of the Kamikaze guys,” Kim said. “They try to get a drink and fall in. That’s just life on a farm, I guess.”

Fierce feline who terrorized family stumps TV host

PORTLAND, Ore. – In what truly epitomized the title of his TV show, “My Cat From Hell,” feline behaviorist Jackson Galaxy is calling his attempt to tame the Portland cat notorious for attacking a baby and boxing his panicked owners into a bedroom “the hardest case I have ever worked.”

It got more difficult after the happy ending for the cat named Lux soon unraveled.

In the reality show that aired last weekend, Galaxy persuades another Portland couple to take Lux while the cat is treated with antidepressants and anti-seizure medication. A veterinarian diagnosed Lux with feline hyperesthesia syndrome, which can trigger violent behavior.

But after the episode’s taping, Lux attacked his new guardians and they gave him up for their own safety.

“It was the worst letdown,” Galaxy told The Associated Press on Tuesday. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a bigger shock. This is the hardest case I have ever worked.”

But take heart, Lux supporters. The 4-year-old cat has become Galaxy’s buddy, and the reality star says he hasn’t given up. He’s placed Lux in

Lux became one of the most notorious cats in pet history after his owner called 911 on March 9 as the cat terrorized his family. Lee Palmer told dispatchers Lux had scratched his son’s head and was out of control. The family barricaded themselves in a bedroom, and Lux could be heard screeching menacingly in the background.

Galaxy set up a series of meetings with Lux and his owners, who did not return messages seeking comment.

The episode shown Saturday demonstrated the difficulty in solving the puzzle that is Lux. In their first encounter, Galaxy walks into a bedroom where the cat’s fearful owners have sequestered him. Galaxy sees Lux peeking out from behind a box. The cat’s eyes are dilated, a sign of distress. He growls.

After making eye contact at the cat’s level and offering treats, Galaxy is able to pick up Lux and put him on his lap.

The cat returns Galaxy’s affection as the tattooed TV host pets him.

“I do not see a vicious cat,” Galaxy says. “I do not see a killer.”

One of the toughest card-play concepts for less experienced players is the “danger hand.” This occurs when declarer must do his utmost to keep one particular opponent off the lead.

Today’s deal, it will not surprise you to learn, is a textbook example.

South is in three no-trump.

West leads the diamond six: five, two (lowest from three worthless cards), jack. How should South continue?

Note North’s two-heart rebid.

With two low diamonds, it is preferable to raise hearts with only three than to rebid one no-trump.

Then South carefully jumps to three no-trump, not four hearts, asking his partner to choose between those two game contracts.

South starts with seven top tricks: three spades, one heart, one diamond (from the first trick) and two clubs. The extra winners can obviously come from the club suit. But through which opponent should declarer finesse?

The first trick makes it clear that West has the diamond queen and ace. If East had either of those cards, he would have played it at trick one -- third hand high. So, if East gains the lead, he will return a diamond straight through South’s king 10, and West will cash several tricks in the suit. But if West is on lead, South still has a diamond stopper. East is the danger hand.

However, declarer still has to be careful. He should cross to dummy with a spade, then run the club 10. When that finesse wins, South plays a club to his jack, cashes the club king, returns to dummy with a spade, takes the club ace and club eight, and ends with an overtrick.

So she told her husband, also a couch potato, how important this was to her and asked him to join her.

By making a pact to do it together, they both were successful, and they remain in very good health.

Dear Barbara: I’m not sure all women would accept being called a “girl.” In fact, some would find it condescending and offensive. If you call a man a “boy,” he could regard it as an assault on his masculinity.

And yet, I have heard those terms used in the third person, as in, “What’s my husband doing on Saturday? He’ll be out playing golf with the boys, while I’ll be going to lunch with the girls.” And I have never heard that it was offensive to either sex.
