Oliver Oat Mill – Joliet In early Chicago, one of the most important food processing activities was the milling of grain. As early as the 1830s, Chicago had contained steam-powered flour mills located near the Chicago River. After the Civil War, other kinds of milling operations settled close to Chicago, including Joliet.

In 1856, Ferdinard Schumacher organized his German Mills American Oatmeal Factory in Akron, Ohio. His plan was to introduce steel-cut oats to the American diet at a time when oats were considered inappropriate for anything but horses.

German and Irish immigrants were the first to bring the food to their tables because they were accustomed to eating oats in Europe.

Oat milling in the 19th century was a relatively low-cost operation, and competitors quickly appeared as oats as a food staple gained acceptance. David Oliver, who was a manufacturer of oatmeal and rolled oats, came to Chicago in April 1864 and established an oatmeal mill business on Rush Street, with the capacity of the mill being 5 (bbls) a day, with the product being sold largely to the drug trade.

Oliver, who was born in Yorkshire, England, on Jan. 1, 1843, and came from a family of millers of long standing, moved the business to Joliet in 1889.

Oliver’s mill complex was located along the west bank of the I&M Canal, just south of the intersection of Jasper and South Center Streets. The complex of buildings was used for a variety of business purposes over the years. Originally, Henry S. Carpenter and Frank E. Marsh developed the site in the late-1870s

for operating a grain elevator.

A decade later, Oliver operated his business from this same location.

By the 1880s, there were established markets throughout the Midwest, especially in Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit. David Oliver soon became one of the largest producers of rolled oats in the region. In 1894, the Oliver Oat Mill employed 15 to 20 men who kept the mill running day and night. Oliver paid his laborers $1.50 and his skilled workers $2.50 to $3 a day. They worked 60 hours a week and produced from 25,000 to 50,000 barrels of oatmeal a year, and 100 to 150 cars of feed a year.

ness in 1901 when he sold his business to the Great Western Cereal Company with sales of $16 million. Twenty years of growth followed, including a wartime peak of $123 million in sales in 1918. In July 1911, Quaker Oats purchased for $1 million the Great Western Cereal Company plants at Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Joliet.

By 1921, the company weathered a grain-surplus crisis and dealers were caught with an oversupply and prices of oats fell, leading that year to the company reporting a loss and beginning to consolidate operations. In early 1922, the newly organized J. L. Ferguson Company leased the former Quaker Oats plant to

manufacture labor-saving package machinery.

David Oliver died on Feb. 1, 1904, in Cape Town, Africa. Oliver and his wife had been on an extended foreign trip when he passed away. Oliver’s body was returned to Chicago on March 15 and was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago. At the time of his death, Oliver was one of the oldest members of the Chicago Board of Trade.

Farmers markets add music, kiddie tractor pulls and beer tastings “Every week, we’ll have something different. We’re having entertainment to add to the atmosphere downtown, so people not only come downtown to shop at the market, but they stay downtown.”

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The first Downtown Joliet Farmers Market of the summer included fruit, vegetables and Colonel Buster’s Three Piece Dinner band.

The live entertainment is a relatively new addition to the farmers market, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Friday.

Market Manager Karen Ward said the Joliet City Center Partnership, which runs the market, added live music last year.

Adding entertainment and other attractions is one way farmers markets differentiate themselves and try to keep people in the local downtowns longer.

“Every week, we’ll have something different,” Ward said. “We’re having entertainment to add to the atmosphere downtown, so people not only come downtown to shop at the market, but they stay downtown.”

The strategy appeared to at least partially work Friday. It was too early to tell how long people were staying. But they did enjoy the atmosphere.

“It’s very welcoming, and it adds a nice flavor,” said Nick Harvey of Joliet, who was strolling through the farmers market with his wife, Amy. “I think it’s calming,” Amy Harvey said. “It makes me want to shop a little more.”

Joe Novak, a guitarist with Colonel Buster’s Three Piece Dinner, said the band had not played at a farmers market before. But he, too, enjoyed the atmosphere.

“It’s nice. We’re very welcomed here,” Novak said. “Everybody seems to be enjoying themselves.”

“One of the first things we did right away to differentiate ourselves was to move our market to Sunday,” Camino said. “A lot of the markets are on Saturdays and during the week.”

Frankfort Country Market has 58 vendors, which is a large number. The number of customers has grown, too.

“When it’s nice weather and such, I’d say we get 500 or more [people],” Camino said. several years, said Mary Camino, a spokeswoman for the Village of Frankfort.

And that’s not all.

The Frankfort market throughout the year will have a kiddie tractor pull, pizza-making for kids, pony rides and other events aimed at attract-

ing families and keeping them in the village’s downtown.

Camino, too, said the live entertainment and other events are ways to keep people downtown and, hopefully, spread their business to some of the local stores and restaurants.

The Joliet City Center Partnership contemplated differentiating its market by moving it to Wednesday evenings. But vendors insisted on keeping the daytime market on Fridays, Ward said.

“We did a survey of our vendors, and it was pretty much

unanimous that they wanted to keep Fridays,” Ward said. “We wanted to try an evening market to see how it goes.”

So Joliet is adding a second market on three Wednesday nights this summer.

The first is from 5 to 10 p.m.

Wednesday. Others will follow on July 19 and Aug. 12.

The market starts at 5 p.m. to attract an after-work crowd.

“That’s why we have the beer,” Ward said.

Downtown Plainfield

The Historic Downtown Plainfield Farmers Market also has a built-in source of customers, although it is held on Saturdays instead of workdays.

“We’re lucky enough that we’re right on the corner of Route 59 and Lockport Street,” said market manager Susan Bostanche. “We get about 500 every Saturday.”

There is no music. But with thousands of motorists driving on Route 59, the market, held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday, does not have a problem getting noticed.

Even so, Bostanche said the market on certain Saturdays will host face painting, farm animals and other attractions aimed at appealing to families with children.

“I want people to come downtown,” she said. “I want people to walk through the whole downtown.”

Morris couple hosts vintage car event at Hollywood Casino in Joliet for diabetes foundation

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – No one had to worry about not touching the cars on display at Saturday’s Greasers and Gamblers Hot Rod and Custom Car Show at the Hollywood Casino. This was not your ordinary cruise night-type event, and the cars and trucks there not your usual dandies.

Vehicles allowed were 1972 and older customs and 1964 and older hot rods and trucks built in the spirit of the traditional era of hot rods and customs.

Some were modified to run faster, some shot flames out of their tailpipes, many had smooth matte finishes and others had sparkle finishes and creative detailing.

“Voodoo Larry” Grobe, of Elk Grove, brought his 1965 Cadillac to show with his wife Collette Marie and their buddies from the Voodoo Kings car club.

“I saved it from the crusher,” Grobe said of the Cadillac. “It sat for 28 years in a downtown Chicago garage.

It had 40,000 miles on it. We were the second owners.”

After rescuing the car, Grobe shaved the door handles, lowered the skirt and finished it with candy-colored, midnight blue and black metal flake with intricate detailing.

Collette pointed out the black interior, which was in mint condition when they acquired the car. A white shag dashboard cover, dummy spotlights and a metal Voodoo Kings sign, and it was ready to go. The Grobes enjoy showing

the car. They’re not afraid to get it out of the garage, either, and drive it around town.

“It’s an everyday cruiser,” Collette said. “We drive it every day.”

Jeremy and Shannon Kisting, of Platteville, Wisconsin, brought their three children to the show, all dressed up for the Lil’ Miss Hollywood and Lil’ Mr. Hollywood contests.

Jeremy said he’s enjoyed working on cars since he was a kid, tooling with his grand-

father.

He brought his ’54 Chevy – a modified stock frame that he bought rusty and customized with a Mustang II front suspension, a step notch and a full air ride. The body is bare metal clear coat, which the kids helped sand. He handmade the visor from a basketball hoop in their yard.

“I didn’t like the look of the visors that were made for it,” Jeremy said with a laugh.

Shannon brought her ’63 Chevy II wagon.

“I always wanted a wagon,” she said. “It’s something we can all fit in.”

This is the first time for the show that Bernie and Marcia Myers, of Morris, organized.

They said they did so at the request of the casino, after some of its staff attended last year’s Jalopy Fest at the Grundy County Speedway, which the Myers also organize.

The profits from the two shows are donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

“It’s going really, really well,” Marcia said a few hours into the show. “I’m blown away by the number of people for a first car show, and

it’s still early. People are still coming in.”

The show also had rockabilly bands, a pin-up girl contest and a late-evening flame-throwing display.

Pin-up girls dressed to the T in 50’s attire were all over the lot. One of them was Angela Baily of Chicago. Baily said dressing as a pin-up girl was fun and almost a feminist thing today.

“It’s taking an idea from the ‘50’s and making it punk as hell,” she said. “Now women are doing it to empower themselves.”

A special celebrity guest was custom car legend Bo Huff, who chatted with aficionados and answered questions about customizing.

“He’s the best-known customizer in the world,” Highland Park collector Joe Bortz said of Huff. “When it comes to custom cars, it’s sculpture, and he’s the best sculptor.”

Huff, from Utah, said he learned the art of customizing by hanging around those who knew it.

This year’s Jalopy Fest will be held Sept. 11 and 12 at the Grundy County Fairgrounds in Morris.

Students from Minooka Area Youth help tornado victims MINOOKA – Eight junior high age students from the Minooka Area Youth organization, accompanied by Youth Director Mike Scheele, went to the Fairdale area last month to help those who had been devastated by the April tornado.

Three weeks had passed since the tornado, so people were already set up with temporary housing, food and clothing from area disaster agencies.

After brainstorming, the group had the idea of offering to wash clothes for these people

“They [disaster victims] didn’t have a lot of means,” said Scheele. “We thought it would be a nice gift to show God’s love in a tangible way.”

But not every gift is always accepted, Scheele said. No one

took advantage of the event.

The kids didn’t let that squash their enthusiasm and desire to minister. They made a sign and hung it in the window of the laundromat. They offered their services to people who had come to do their own wash.

Some people accepted generously, Scheele said. One woman said it was like a magic moment at Disneyland. The woman got to leave and take care of other things. Her husband opted to stay with their

Morris woman provided full lives for special needs adults

‘A servant to others’

“I remember someone calling her a year ago to thank her for finally getting someone Social Security,” Jeremy said.

“It had taken 10 years. She just kept redoing the paperwork.”

Despite her persistence, Susan was respectful, Jackie said, causing people to respect her requests.

“She approached it in a very kind manner, but firm about what needed to be done,” Jackie said.

With her family, Susan became involved in Special Olympics, but wanted to do more, Jeremy said.

“She was very visionary,” Kandis said. “She felt we should not just be teaching them independent living skills.

She felt we needed to add other components so their lives would be more full.”

So Susan, her family, and a group of community members, began Special Connections of Grundy County. Through it, adults with special needs could participate in sports and class-

es in dance, music and fitness, Jeremy said. Susan’s family will continue her legacy.

For instance, Jackie said her mother taught her to have compassion for people with disabilities, starting when Jackie accompanied Susan to work – when Susan was a teacher’s assistant – on “Take Your Child to Work” day.

“Because of the way she raised me and all the things she taught me, I earned my master’s in special education and am now a special education teacher,” Jackie said. “I know without a doubt that without the example she set for me, I

MORRIS – It’s more common today for dying individuals to plan their funerals, so grieving loved ones don’t have to make those arrangements.

But during her battle with pancreatic cancer, Susan McNabb of Morris showed double compassion. She planned two funerals, one for family and friends, and a second for the special needs community she had served for nearly two deSusan cades, complete McNabb with a message they could understand.

“She taught us all what it meant to be a servant to others,” said Kandis Cassetto, executive director of Illinois Valley Industries. “Her laugh was contagious and her joy just radiated in any room she entered, and this she carried with her until her last days.”

Until her children Jeremy McNabb and Jackie Stoltz – both of Morris – were in school, Susan was a stay-at-home mom that aspired to become a teacher. But when Susan’s motherin-law had cancer, Susan set aside her education to care for her, Jackie said.

When Susan returned to her goals, she worked as a program assistant for special education at Minooka grade school district, a position she held for 10 years. The fact she had an uncle with cognitive impairments contributed to her desire to work with that community, Jackie said.

“Seeing how people treated him made her want to make things better for people with disabilities,” Jeremy said.

For more than 17 years, Susan was the community living director at the Narvick House in Morris, a residence home of Illinois Valley Industries. It was a role Susan relished.

To some, Susan was a mother figure. To others, she was a close friend, Jackie said.

She worked 12-plus hour days, took calls at night and on the weekends, and submitted and

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College was awarded a grant last week that will go toward highlighting the culture and history of Latinos – a fast-growing demographic at the community college.

JJC was one of more than 200 organizations nationwide to receive the grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to participate in “Latino Americans: 500 Years of History,” produced by NEH and the American Library As-

sociation.

Martha Villegas Miranda, JJC Latino student support specialist, said she was excited the college was one of the grant’s recipients.

She said she pursued the grant because of the college’s and community’s growing Latino population. Currently, 23 percent of students at JJC are Latino.

“This is going to help with cultural programming where students can feel like they’re part of the college … and also to educate those not familiar with the rich history of Latinos in

the U.S.,” she said.

Application for the grant was a collaboration between the JJC Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, the Grant Development Office and the library department.

Grantees nationwide include not only colleges, but libraries, museums, historical societies and other nonprofit organizations. They will host exhibits, events and festivities celebrating Latino culture and history.

According to the ALA, the cornerstone of the “Latino Americans: 500 Years of His-

tory” project is a six-part 2013 documentary film that chronicles Latinos in the U.S. from the 16th century onward.

Michelle Roman-Garcia, JJC multicultural student affairs director, said her office is “over the moon” it received the grant because it will allow more outreach efforts, such as spending more time talking about Latino history and bringing in more keynote speakers.

“Unfortunately, our Millenials are more aware of pop culture than they are of their own history, so this would allow us to shed some more light,” she

said.

This year, JJC invited civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez to speak at the college about how her family and others fought to end segregation of Mexican youths in California schools.

Roman-Garcia said in the early 1990s, JJC had a Latino club, but an office to help Latino students and students from different ethnic backgrounds wasn’t created until 2003.

Latino cultural programming has since expanded at JJC and she said she wants to do more.

Thousands of walkers were at the 3-mile walk in Chicago for Walk for Kidneys to help people affected by kidney disease, raising money for prevention, education and empowerment programs.

King said she wanted to participate in the walk to show people how kidney disease can affect someone like Nolan.

“He’s still young and cute, so we wanted to put him out there so people can see kidney disease isn’t just [affecting] old people,” she said. “Hopefully, people will open their eyes and start donating to the National

Kidney Foundation.”

Nolan stays active, she said. He loves to play sports, such as soccer, for the Joliet Park District and he loves to watch wrestling.

King hopes Walk for Kidneys makes people more aware of the disease and the research being done – such as artificial kidneys and stem cell research – to help those who struggle with it.

“They need all the help they can get,” she said.

JOLIET – Joliet resident Sandy King and her family honored her son Nolan – who has chronic kidney disease – by walking in the Walk for Kidneys on Sunday to show the disease doesn’t just affect adults.

As part of Team Nolan, King and her family decided to participate for the first time in the walk that raises money for the National Kidney Foundation to help others such as Nolan, 4, receive better treatment. According to the foun-

dation, 26 million American adults have kidney disease.

“There’s millions of people with kidney disease and they don’t even know they have kidney disease – it’s a silent disease,” King said.

Nolan King Nolan’s parents knew he had kidney problems before he was born. King said it’s been “heartbreaking and devastating” for their family knowing he has chronic kidney disease.

He was an active member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, where he served as head usher for many years, and a member of the Joliet Rotary Club for over 30 years.

He enjoyed sharing a childhood story of delivering the Dixon Evening Telegraph newspaper to his favorite customer, Ronald Reagan’s mother, Nelle.

Born on August 25, 1927, in Joliet, Ben enjoyed sports and spent many years coaching area youth teams.

He was an accomplished golfer, who in 1963 set the course record at Woodruff Golf Course with a score of 59. This record still stands today.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed many casino vacations with his wife Marge and their friends.

He retired from Vidmar Buick after more than 40 years of service to the dealership, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Ben lived a full life as a husband, father, and friend.

Edward Shain was born on December 12, 1932, and passed away peacefully at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center on Monday, June 15, 2015.

He leaves behind his wife of 22 years, Gail; his beloved daughter, Deborah (David) Petersen; one sister, Marge Pilon; and devoted grandchildren, Ryan (fiancée, Carla) Shain, Nicholas Shain, Michelle (Jeremy) Brown, Kelly and Kevin Petersen. Ed also had 4 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann; and a son, Kenneth.

He was a very loving husband and father; he was caring and kind to all he met.

Ed was active as a skilled carpenter and builder of fine furniture, both before and after his retirement. He worked often with his lifelong friend, Dennis Hatton.

He was employed for many years with Joliet Bridge and Construction, eventually moving into the position

of superintendent. There was hardly a bridge in all of Will County that Ed hadn’t built or repaired. He had every reason to be proud of his accomplishments.

As per Ed’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded with the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home in Joliet.

Born in Evergreen Park and a Wilmington resident for the past 12 years. A graduate of DeVry University of Chicago. A U.S. Air Force Veteran. Retired from NBC Chicago after many years of service. David enjoyed fishing and traveling the country with his wife in his motor home more than anything in the world.

CTA president has to give up lucrative CTA pension

CHICAGO – Dorval Carter took a new job last month as president of the Chicago Transit Authority and had to temporarily suspend receipt of a pension – from the CTA. Carter left the CTA in 2009 and signed up for an early retirement program that has paid him $755,000 in retirement benefits in just 5½ years, according to documents reviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times and Better Government Association.

But the 57-year-old Carter wasn’t retired. He worked in President Barack Obama’s Transportation Department at a salary of $146,000 annually while taking in $137,000 a year in CTA pension.

“He signed up for a program that dozens of his colleagues signed up for as well,” CTA spokesman Brian Steele said, adding that Carter was not given any special treatment. Toward that pension, Carter paid $245,000 records show.

Carter, who now makes $235,000 as CTA chief, worked for the transit agency from 1984 to 1991. After a stint for the Federal Transit Administration, he returned to CTA in 2000 and accepted the early retirement deal in 2009.

Carter has an unlisted phone number. A CTA spokesman declined further comment Sunday.

The Sun-Times reported that Carter had been contributing to the CTA pension plan which provides for retirement at 65 and participated in a “supplemental” program for executives that the CTA decide to close in 2008. As part of ending the plan, the CTA allowed 150 executives to roll regular contributions into the supplemental plan if they retired

LINCOLN – The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for several rivers in Illinois and transportation officials have closed some roadways.

The weather service said the rising Embarras River at Lawrenceville in southeastern Illinois has inundated Lumber Mill Road.

The river is expected to fall below flood stage Thursday.

The Little Wabash River near Clay City in southern Illinois also is under a flood warning. The weather service said North Clay Road is flooded there.

The Sangamon River at Monticello in central Illinois is under a flood warning until Sunday afternoon.

Churches show their support for Charleston

CHICAGO – Prayers for nine victims of a shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, filled sanctuaries in Illinois where pastors spoke of love triumphing over hate.

In the southwestern Illinois city of O’Fallon, the congregation of New Life in Christ Church joined hands to sing “We Shall Overcome.” The Belleville News-Democrat reported the church’s Bishop Geoffrey Dudley said: “No matter who’s doing the hating, God’s doing the loving.”

In Chicago, an interfaith, interracial prayer service was planned for Sunday afternoon at New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church on the city’s west side. The Rev. Marshall Hatch told The Associated Press: “We can’t let hate win.”

Hatch said sanctuaries “should remain sacred spaces” and he pledges to keep the doors to his church open.

In fact, said Scheele, you don’t have to believe in God or Jesus to participate in the youth group. Kids will certainly hear about them, but they can have their own beliefs.

The group is a way for area kids to get together in a place and an opportunity to gain confidence, feel welcome and have fun, said Scheele.

On another local mission outing, the teens spent about two hours doing yard work for someone who needed help.

Afterward, they were able to enjoy the recipients’ recreation room, which included a big screen TV, pool table, air hockey and a popcorn machine.

Helping people in need is just one of the many things the youth group out of Minooka United Methodist Church does on Sunday afternoons.

The older kids (sixththrough 12th-grades) meet weekly for fun activities, such as “Game Show Month,” where

every week has a different game show theme. One afternoon, the kids made a giant Jenga game with two by fours.

There are surprise competitions, such as photo scavenger hunts at the mall and field trips. One upcoming trip is next month, to Mt. Olympus in the Wisconsin Dells. The kids riased the money to go during an all night rock-a-thon (in rocking chairs).

The younger set, grades three through five, called Kids, Inc., meet bi-weekly and do fun things like learning science from a biblical perspective and creating slime. Other activities include having a silly time with dancing and occasional movie nights when everyone dresses up in the theme of the movie.

Jones makes auto racing history Driver is youngest to wins two national races in the same weekend

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – It was a good week to be Erik Jones.

On Tuesday, he won a short-track race in Berlin, Michigan.

On Friday, he won a NASCAR truck series race in Newton, Iowa, and move to third in the standings.

On Sunday, he made history, winning the Owens Corning AttiCat 300, the oneday weather delayed Xfinity Series race at Chicagoland Speedway, to become, at 19 years and 23 days, the youngest driver to win two NASCAR national series races in the same weekend.

No wonder Steve deSouza, the manager of Joe Gibbs Racing’s Xfinity series team, is optimistic about the lad’s future.

“He’s doing everything we thought he could do,” deSouza said. “I’m sure we’ll see him in the Cup at some time in the future.”

That would be the Sprint Cup, the top level in stock car racing, where he has run part of one race, relieving Denny Hamlin in Kansas earlier this year.

His first start is to come. When it does, look for someone with the patience of a veteran and the hotfoot of a winner. For now, Jones is the man to look for in the mirrors in the Xfinity and truck series.

When Ryan Blaney saw him coming on Sunday’s lap 189 restart, he could do nothing about it. Blaney went low to run a shorter track but tighter line in his Penske Racing Ford, and Jones, running high, motored by, at first incrementally, and then with a rush in his Gibbs-prepared Toyota.

“He got tight or loose, and I got a run and barreled into Turn 3,” Jones explained. “It was a matter of him making a little mistake. I don’t know if we’d have won if he hadn’t done that.”

Given the ease with while Jones had carved his way through the field on previous occasions, there was little reason to doubt a pass would come somewhere in the last 15 miles. Jones had started 11th and climbed into the lead by the 39th lap, and led on six occasions in all.

He even came back from a bizarre snafu in which he and 18 other drivers were sent to the back of the field for pitting when the pits were closed. Race control said the pits were open, but the men working the lights and the red flag didn’t get the word. Most of the leaders came in, and NASCAR slapped their wrists.

“It was just kind of a mess,” Jones explained. “I knew it wasn’t the end of our day. I was pretty confident in our car through traffic.”

Thus, no big deal. He took the next green flag in 10th place, was fifth by the end of the lap, and was back on his

way.

Blaney ended up second, 1.958 seconds in arrears, and was kicking himself not for being passed at the end, but for clouting the wall in his primary car on Saturday.

“I felt I threw it away (Saturday) by

wrecking our primary,” Blaney said.

“For our team to get the backup car out and having it leading in the last little bit, that really speaks volumes about how well they prepare.”

“It’s just unfortunate that we couldn’t get a few runs to let him settle in. That allowed them to be very aggressive on the bases and make things happen and we didn’t make plays when we needed to. Their pitcher didn’t make a whole lot of mistakes and kept us off-balanced. We didn’t get into hitting counts but had a couple of opportunities and didn’t take advantage. That’s the way it’s been going. We have to come up with some big hits.

“We’ve got the pitching staff throwing some pretty good, quality innings, so now it’s up to the hitters. We have to start hitting the ball and doing some things and some times less is more. We just have to try to string together some base hits.”

River City (19-13) got its first

hit with two outs in the fourth and then took advantage of two hits and an error in the fifth to grab the early lead.

Hector Crespo singled past first and then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. He scored on a blooper to center by Josh Silver (2 for 3).

The Rascals were at it again an inning later when Curran Redal was hit by a pitch, stole second and then Brian Hansen grounded out to advance the runner.

Josh Ludy bounced one to a drawn-in Alfredo Rodriguez at short. Rodriguez made a nice diving stop but his throw home was a bit late.

Joliet (12-21) got a run back in the seventh when Casey Fletcher led off with a solo shot to right, which marked Koons’ exit from the contest.

But the Rascals made it 3-1

in the top of the eighth when Redal led off with a walk, stole second base, took third on a throwing error and came home on a sacrifice fly by Danny Canela (2 for 3).

River City added another run in the ninth when Zach Kometani walked and took second on a wild pitch by reliever Sam Moore.

Silver followed with a single to bring in reliever Kevin McNorton, who got a popup for the second out, but Redal singled to left to score pinch runner Jackson Slaid.

Rascals relievers Chandler Jagodzinski and Zeb Sneed allowed only one hit during the last three innings to preserve the victory for Koons.

The Slammers begin a three-game set at Schaumburg on Tuesday before returning home for a weekend series against Normal.

Continued from page 18 Jones normally drives car No. 20 for Gibbs in Xfinity races, but Sunday was the fifth time he’s driven No. 54, normally associated with Kyle Busch, instead. Now, he’s won in both cars.

“Guess what?” crew chief Chris Gayle said. “The 54 car can win without Kyle.”

Jones drives for Busch’s team in the truck series, so he wasn’t about to say that. Instead, now boasting a resume that includes two wins and

eight top-10 finishes in the last 10 Xfinity races, and third in the truck season standings with six top 10s including Friday’s win, he said he liked his lot in life, which includes chasing the truck title.

NASCAR drivers can score points in only one series, and Jones selected the truck series before the season.

“I’m definitely content racing for truck series points,” Jones said. “That team wants to run for a driver’s championship, and I felt we owed it to them to be back this year.”

The race began with pole winner Austin Dillon surren-

dering the lead to Ross Kenseth, who started second, on the first lap. Dillon quickly regained it and finished third, 2.325 seconds behind Jones. Brendan Gaughan was fourth, Xfinity series leader Chris Buescher fifth, with Kenseth and Daniel Suarez, Gibbs’ other two drivers in the race, sixth and seventh.

Jones collected $97,576 for his team from the purse of $1,367,242.

NASCAR confirmed Jones is the youngest driver to win two national races the same weekend, but could not immediately report whose record Jones surpassed.

JOLIET – After halting a seven-game losing streak Saturday, the Joliet Slammers hoped to build upon that victory in Sunday’s Frontier League contest against River City.

And although Kevin Walter entered the contest with a 0-1 mark and a 4.00 ERA, he figured to be a good candidate to give the Slammers a chance to capture the rubber game of the weekend series with the Rascals.

In his last two starts, the righthander had only allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out 17 hitters in 12 innings of work. But despite those numbers, he settled for a pair of no-decisions.

Walter turned in another good outing, giving up five hits and one earned run while

striking out seven in eight innings.

But River City starter Tim Koons was just as good, limiting the Slammers to only four hits and one run while striking out four in six innings.

The Rascals were able to capitalize on a pair of unearned runs and held Joliet to only five hits as they captured a 4-1 victory in a Father’s Day afternoon game before 1,486 fans at Silver Cross Field.

“Kevin threw an outstanding game for us,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said. “In a situation where we’re not scoring runs, every pitch matters and he did a heck of a job executing and giving us an opportunity to win. He’s thrown the ball extremely well for us.

Kevin’s worked himself into the ace of our pitching staff and is one of the top pitchers in the league. Every time that he

Spieth wins a stunner at Chambers Bay for title

By DOUG FERGUSON The Associated Press UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Another major for Jordan Spieth. Another stunning loss for Dustin Johnson.

Chambers Bay delivered heart-stopping drama Sunday in the U.S. Open when Spieth birdied his final hole to become only the sixth player to win the Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year. The real shock was not that he won, but how he won.

Moments earlier, Spieth could only watch as Johnson had a 12-foot eagle putt for the victory. Johnson ran the putt just over 3 feet past the cup, and his short birdie attempt to force a Monday playoff rolled past the lip.

“I’m in shock,” Spieth said, who now goes to St. Andrews next month in his pursuit of golf’s holy grail – the calendar Grand Slam.

For all the criticism of Chambers Bay, this was theater at its finest.

Spieth looked like he had this wrapped up when he rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, turning toward Puget Sound before he pumped his fist. With Branden Grace hitting a tee shot onto the railroad tracks to make double bogey, Spieth had a three-shot lead.

And then it was gone.

He took double bogey on the 17th hole. Louis Oosthuizen made one last birdie – six of his last seven holes for a 67 – to post at 4-under 276. Johnson, who had a two-shot lead at the turn until missing so many putts on the back nine, was forgotten.

Spieth, a wire-to-wire winner at Augusta National, showed he can be clutch. He drilled a 3-wood off the back slope to 15 feet and two-putted for his birdie and a 69 to finish at 5-under 275. Johnson, in the final group behind him, made a 4-foot birdie on the 17th and needed a birdie to force a playoff.

He blasted his drive so far that he only had 5-iron to the par-5 18th, and that rolled up to 15 feet left of the hole. Make it and win. Two putts for a playoff.

It was the fourth heartache for Johnson in the majors, and this was the worst.

Spieth was waiting to use the bathroom when Johnson came out. It was an awkward pat on the back. There wasn’t

much to say.

Jason Day, who collapsed on Friday with vertigo only to rally for a share of the 54-hole lead, fell back with missed putt and was never in the hunt on the back nine. He closed with a 74 to finish five shots behind.

Arrieta pitches shutout as Cubs beat Twins

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) – Never mind the infamous punch and the trash talk: The U.S. women’s team says the only motivation it needs for defeating Colombia is the opportunity to move on at the Women’s World Cup. When the teams met nearly three years ago in the London Olympics, Colombia striker Lady Andrade sucker-punched U.S. star Abby Wambach in the eye, drawing a two-match suspension.

Then in advance of Monday’s game against the United States in the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup, Andrade made provocative statements about the Americans to a reporter.

U.S. striker Alex Morgan wasn’t taking the bait.

“Yes, we’ve seen what Lady said,” Morgan said. “We’ve always respected them. We want to let our actions speak on the field.”

MINNEAPOLIS – After botching an easy comebacker to the mound in the third inning, Jake Arrieta made certain he never lost control of the game.

Arrieta pitched a four-hitter and Dexter Fowler hit a grand slam, leading the Cubs over the Minnesota Twins, 8-0, on Sunday.

Arrieta (6-6) walked a career-high six in his last start, but didn’t walk anyone and struck out seven for his second career shutout and first since last Sept.

16 against Cincinnati.

“Stuff was crisp, actually got better as the game wore on,” Arrieta said. “Got comfortable and found a really good tempo.”

Arrieta was anything but comfortable after flubbing an easy chopper by Byron Buxton for an error in the third inning. Buxton eventually made it all the way to third base, but Arrieta escaped the inning without any damage.

Arrieta then set down 16 of the next 17 hitters he faced, and was extra careful not to make another mistake on three other comebackers later in the game.

“He was upset with himself, very upset with himself,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “It was definitely on his mind.”

Fowler’s second career slam capped a six-run eighth inning.

The shot brought the several thousand Cubs fans at sold-out Target Field to their feet for a prolonged standing ovation and “Let’s go Cubs!” chant.

Beckham’s HR gives White Sox win over Texas in 11

CHICAGO – Gordon Beckham led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a homer and Melky Cabrera went 5 for 5 and the White Sox beat the Texas Rangers, 3-2, Sunday.

Ryan Rua and Leonys Martin homered for the Rangers, who dropped two of three to the Sox. The Sox have won two straight after losing a season-high eight straight games.

Beckham homered on the first pitch in the 11th inning from Rangers reliever Alex Claudio (1-1).

A good bridge player is a like a sorceress who dispenses happiness to her side and unhappiness to her opponents.

How would an enchantress play today’s deal in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest diamond, and South takes the first trick with her nine?

There’s that boring auction again! It is the most common not only in newspaper columns but also at the tables.

Declarer starts with only seven top tricks: three spades, one heart, one diamond (trick one) and two clubs. But she can gain at least two more winners from the clubs, even if she loses a trick to the queen. What, though, is the danger?

Trick one made it clear that West has the diamond ace-queen hovering over South’s king-jack. So, if East gains the lead, he will push a diamond through declarer and West will run some -- perhaps too many -- winners.

East is the danger hand who must be kept off play.

To achieve this, declarer plays a spade to dummy’s king, then magically runs specifically the club jack. When it wins, she plays a club to her 10, cashes the club ace, and claims an overtrick.

There is one last important point.

At trick one, East should play his diamond deuce, not cover dummy’s six with his eight.

When one cannot play a nine or higher, give count. Here, East’s lowest shows an odd number of cards in that suit.

What’s controversial is this question: If your blood level of vitamin D is possibly low or on the low side of normal, does taking vitamin D supplements reduce your risk of developing these major diseases? My own view is that we just don’t know. Fortunately, research is underway to answer that question.

Until the answer is in, what should we do?

A committee of experts convened by the Institute of Medicine recommends: (1) people below the age of 70 should take 600 international units (IU) per day of vitamin D, and (2) people age 70 and older should take 800 IU per day. If you can’t get enough from foods and modest sun exposure, it makes sense to consider a daily supplement.

Vitamin D comes in two forms: D3 and D2. D3 is the form made naturally by the body. It is also the form most often used to fortify milk and other foods.

D2 is made from plant material. The Institute of Medicine has said that D2 is just as effective as D3. Other experts recommend D3 because it is the form most easily absorbed and used by the body. I agree with them.

advised me to take a vitamin D supplement. Why do I need vitamin D? Also, my pharmacy sells vitamin D in two forms: D2 and D3. What is the difference, and which one should I take?

Dear Reader: This is an area full of controversy because not enough research has been done.

I typically recommend getting vitamins from food, but vitamin D is found naturally in only a few foods. Fatty fish is the main dietary source, and milk, many juices and breakfast cereals are fortified with it.

We get most of our vitamin D from the sun: When sunlight strikes the skin, skin cells make vitamin D. But these days, people get a lot less sunlight than they used to.

Other factors also affect how much vitamin D your body makes. For example, how far you live from the equator, the season and the time of day all affect how much sunlight reaches your skin. Your age, skin color, how much skin you expose and your sunscreen use also influence your production of vitamin D. The amount of vitamin D in your body is reflected by the levels of the vitamin in your blood. These levels can be divided into the following categories: clearly low, possibly low, on the low side of normal and on the high side of normal. Here’s what we know: People with clearly low levels of vitamin D are at greatly increased risk for osteoporosis, a bone-thinning disease, and should take vitamin D supplements. That’s not controversial.

Dear Abby: I have a dilemma. Last year my son became a professional in his sport, and he has recently become famous. Since then, everyone is asking for tickets to games because they want in on the action. I treated one relative who lives near me to a game with her son, and now her sister (with whom I’ve had very little contact) is saying she follows the games and would love to attend.

My son gets tickets, but they are not free and they do cost him something. It’s becoming very stressful for him. Friends and family from all over now ask him for tickets. I don’t want to impose upon him for other than immediate family.

How do I tactfully tell these people that I won’t ask? I don’t want it to sound like HE doesn’t want to do it. I want it to come from a concerned mom who simply doesn’t get tickets for everyone, so they need to go online and buy them like normal people do. – Professional
