JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and a couple Joliet City Council members expressed some concern that they no longer had the final say-so in whether another truck stop will be built along Route 53.

There was some dispute over whether the Cadence Premier Logistics project planned for the corner of Emerald Drive should actually be called a truck stop.

But whatever it is to be called, the Zoning Board of Appeals gave the essential approvals for the retail operation at a meeting last month, City Attorney Martin Shanahan told the council at a workshop meeting Monday. The council, however, will still vote Tuesday on key parts of the plan.

“I’m not sure the council would have approved another truck stop,” O’Dekirk said.

Councilman Jim McFarland pointed to the potential of three truck stops at the Laraway Road intersection.

“To me, this is a fourth,” McFarland

said. “I don’t know how we can say this is not going to attract trucks.”

“I don’t like to call it a truck stop,” said Cadence CEO Rocky Caylor, although he said the operation will be so defined by the state of Illinois for the purpose of video gambling machines that will be put into the facility.

“We don’t want to be in the truck stop business. That’s not what we do,” Caylor told the council.

Cadence wants to move its corporate headquarters, distribution operation and assembly plant from Alsip to Joliet. The project also includes a facility that will sell compressed natural gas and diesel fuel to trucks, along with a repair facility for trucks and a convenience store with video gambling.

Caylor said the facility will serve Cadence’s own fleet and other trucking operations in the area. He said he did not expect to pull customers off of Interstate 80.

The zoning board has final say on zoning variations, which were sought for video gaming and above-ground fuel storage

needed for the compressed natural gas sales.

However, the council will vote Tuesday on a special use permit allowing for the truck maintenance operation and the sale of truck parts.

The council Tuesday also will vote on a special use permit sought by the Hawk Auto Group as part of its acquisition of Bill Jacobs dealerships in Joliet.

Hawk on Friday completed the acquisition of Bill Jacobs Chevrolet, Cadillac, Mazda and Subaru dealerships on Jefferson Street. Hawk wants a special use permit to sell Subaru vehicles at 2200 W. Jefferson St., the former site of an auto parts store.

Randich: ‘Have the kids changed? No... I’ve always enjoyed working with them’

It’s always a highlight for Randich, Joliet Central High School’s principal for about nine years. But he presided Friday over his last graduation, deciding to retire after spending more than three decades educating and leading teachers and students.

He’s thankful he worked in the Joliet community for so long. But even after setting his retirement date four years ago, he’s a little worried about what lies ahead.

“I’ve worked full time for 39 years. So I’m looking to go from 100 miles an hour to maybe 50 – and not necessarily 100 miles an hour to zero,” he said.

In Randich’s time with Joliet Township High School District 204, he’s witnessed significant changes in the quality of the education and the student body at Joliet Central. He’s watched some of his own students become teachers at the high school, just as he did.

“He is an individual who leads by example. … He’s consistently the first to arrive at school and the last to go home and this really includes Saturdays, Sundays and holidays,” said Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy, who presented Randich with the Superintendent’s Medallion at Friday’s graduation ceremony.

The urge to teach

After graduating from Joliet Central High School in 1972, Randich attended what was then called the College of

Upon graduating, he worked at the college, planning to become a baseball coach until he realized he wanted to teach and coach.

He landed a position at Joliet West High School in 1978 doing both. Not too long after, the school district closed Joliet East High School due to low enrollment and the district reduced its workforce.

Randich had to find another job.

He went back to the College of St. Francis, but the urge to teach and coach remained. In 1984, he joined Joliet Central as a teacher and coach, embarking a 30-year career that led him to the principal’s office in 2007.

Randich said his work as a teacher and a coach prepared him to become a principal. It’s a role that offered opportunities but also challenges, such as worrying about the safety

of more than 3,000 students and 300 staff members.

When he parked his car and walked to the school building, he would say a prayer to God to keep everyone safe.

“I did that every day,” he said. “As a principal, like a coach, you have to make sure everyone is doing their part so that the play is run perfectly.”

Changes in the community

Being a principal means being part of the community.

Randich said when he goes to stores or churches, he constantly runs into parents and students and talks with them.

It’s one of the things he’ll miss about the job.

The role of principals has changed – they no longer act as a school’s curriculum director – but Randich tries to lead improvements in instructional practice and student achievement.

Since he’s worked at Joliet Central, Randich said he saw vast improvement to facilities. He’s also overseen a

One of Randich’s own teachers, Eural “Mac” McLaughlin, who still works at the school, said “dinosaurs” such as himself and Randich stay because they “want to see change, we want to see the development of our student body.”

Jenine Barnes, Joliet Central pupil personnel service coordinator, said Randich taught her when she went to school in the mid-1980s.

“He was an awesome math teacher,” Barnes said. “He knew his stuff and he was very patient with those of us who were not quick to get it because he’s thorough in his detail and I can see that in his leadership. He wants to make sure there is a certainty.”

The future

Randich said the next principal – Shad Hallihan – will have the opportunity to work on the district’s strategic plan and see new facilities built, but also faces the challenge of increasing the school’s graduation rate.

While Randich has seen much change, some things remain the same.

“Have the kids changed?

No. Teenagers are still teenagers. I’ve always enjoyed working with them,” he said.

deepening, the governor’s office has repeatedly said Rauner wants a number of his Turnaround Agenda items approved before he’ll consider new revenue. Those include reforms on civil liability lawsuits, term limits and workers’ compensation, among other matters.

But linking nonbudget items to state dollars isn’t “compromise,” said Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood.

“From my perspective, and many of my colleagues, what went wrong is he kept throwing nonbudgeting items into the process,” Walsh Jr. said.

“We need to talk about revenue. We have a budget to work out.”

Bertino-Tarrant said she wouldn’t bet on a compromise early in the summer, considering the negotiation “meltdown” witnessed in the last week.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers remain divided on

how to approach negotiations concerning next year’s budget, which begins July 1.

“There are some serious, deep philosophical differences,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “And [Republicans] never offered an alternative. They never pushed their own version of the budget forward.”

But Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, said things fell apart quickly after Democrat-controlled legislative committees – the first step in vetting a bill before it reaches the House or Senate floor – voted down Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda items without batting an eye.

“Every vote for the governor’s items were along party lines,” Rezin said. “They had the votes. The debates were very long, very contentious, but they just stuck to rhetoric and talking points.”

Rezin said she hopes compromise comes soon, noting

that the “pressure point” really begins in the middle of July – when the first paychecks must be issued.

“People will really start to notice when they’re not getting a paycheck,” Rezin said. “Believe me, that’s not a point we want to get to.”

When asked whether he thinks lawmakers could cut a deal before mid-July, state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, said he’s “not a betting kind of person.”

So, what’s it going to take for both sides to agree on a spending plan?

“I don’t know,” Anthony said. “The truth is, if we had that answer, May 31 would have been the last day and we would have a budget in front of us. All sides are going to have to come together, and there it is, that ugly word again: Compromise.”

Gov. Rauner begins ad blitz as budget standoff persists

By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – The state Capitol was quiet Monday, after the departure of lawmakers locked in a budget stalemate with Gov. Bruce Rauner. But the silence belied a cacophony of political ads the rookie administration is about to unleash on powerful legislative Democrats calling them an elite “political class” unwilling to help the middle class.

Republican Rauner previewed the video assault Monday, contending the state can’t find a financial footing without his proposed political- and business-climate changes.

Democrats adopted a $36.3 billion spending plan that they acknowledge is short on revenue by $3 billion and left town.

They insist Rauner’s agenda for term limits, fairer political district drawing, a local property

tax freeze and less costly workers’ compensation insurance are unrelated to funding essential government services – those vital to the low-income and middle class.

Rauner countered that his agenda is “intimately connected” with budget Gov. Bruce n e g o t i a t i o n s Rauner – his changes would stymie a “thriving political class of politicians and lobbyists monetarily dependent on the formidable House speaker, Chicago Democrat Michael Madigan.

“We’ve had financial instability in Illinois for years, for decades,” Rauner told WBEZ radio. “And it’s because our government is so full of conflicts of interest and so full of mismanagement.”

A: Rauner won’t confirm they’re in the can, but aides have suggested the main target is Madigan. Expect them to go beyond perceived recent inflexibility and to examine the Illinois Democratic Party chairman’s three decades as speaker. There was no immediate evidence Monday that TV stations had reserved time for Rauner ads.

Q: How will the Democrats respond?

A: Madigan will continue to work “in a professional and cooperative manner,” spokesman Steve Brown said. No advertising slouch, Madigan has begun sending his message in mailers to Republican turf.

Perhaps more important is how local legislators offset the

broadcast rancor. When lawmakers aren’t in Springfield, they’re often knocking on voters’ doors.

“They’d be delivering a report on the session and the accomplishments that were made, things we were able to pass,” Brown said. “I’m not sure how well-received whatever this attack will be, how credible it will be, in that context.”

lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – International Transload Logistics Inc. – a company specializing in domestic and international logistics and overweight truck handling – is relocating from its facility in Elwood to Joliet.

While the company was on the lookout for more space, the closure of the controversial Walter Strawn Drive crossing in Elwood and the uncertainty behind Will County’s temporary allowance of overweight permits for Arsenal Road were major factors in the move, said John Roetter, president for ITL. “It put us in a tough position,” Roetter said.

The new location is about four miles north of the company’s previous location.

The logistics company had to shift its operations from its Wilmington facility to Elwood when the railroad crossing was closed because Walter Strawn Drive was, at the time, the only access point for overweight trucks.

It’s the second company to announce plans to move from Elwood to Joliet in recent months, in part because of the crossing’s closure. Saddle Creek Logistics also is considering a change in venue.

Roetter said his company began looking “almost immediately for a plan B,” when the railroad crossing in Elwood closed earlier this year, leav-

Roetter said ITL will begin leasing the 303,061-square-foot space from CenterPoint Properties, the developer of the two intermodals, in early August.

The state-of-the-art building is within the Joliet intermodal and offers immediate access to Interstate 55 and Interstate 80.

The facility includes 42 dock doors and nearly 100 truck parking positions, according to a CenterPoint news release.

Roetter said he’s not certain what will become of his 90,000-square-foot Wilmington facility, which the company owns. The company’s 160,000-square-foot Elwood facility will be vacated and another company could potentially make use of the space.

Roetter said he looks forward to the move, noting the larger space in Joliet.

“This building has a bigger capacity, giving us opportunity to secure more business and expand,” Roetter said.

Roetter said he anticipates having an open house in August.

The Illinois Commerce Commission ruled earlier this year that the Walter Strawen Drive railroad crossing is “too dangerous” to remain open while a permanent solution to safety hazards can be found. In the meantime, state officials continue to talk with representatives from Elwood, CenterPoint Properties and Union Pacific about potential solutions.

The next ICC hearing is set for July 7.

JOLIET – The financial crunch at the Rialto Square Theatre has gotten so tight the theater is not paying its gas bill.

Finance Manager Dale Evans reported last week the Rialto got a “red notice” from Nicor Gas for a $10,000 unpaid gas bill from March.

During his monthly financial report to the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, which oversees the Rialto, Evans also said he was “sitting on payroll taxes” normally paid out on the day paychecks are issued.

Instead, Evans said, the payroll taxes went out the next day – still within the allowable time period, but the first time he did not pay them the same day as payroll.

“It’s a juggling act,” Evans told the WCMEAA board.

Rialto officials have asked the city of Joliet to advance the theater the last two quarterly payments of the city’s annual $600,000 contribution, a total of $300,000. They plan to go to Tuesday’s City Council meeting to make their case.

“We have few options available to us,” Rialto Executive Director Randy Green told the WCMEAA board last week.

Rialto officials said their cash flow problems are in part because of the marquee dilemma and also to weak pre-sales for the 2014-15 season of performances.

The Rialto returned a $350,000 marquee donation from

retired businessman Ed Czerkies, who pulled back the contribution amid a swirling controversy over whether a memorial to his parents should go on the new sign.

Construction of the sign was stopped in mid-production at Landmark Sign Group in Indiana. But the Rialto already has paid $171,000 and owes at least another $26,000 as the board decides what to do about the marquee.

Green told the board some funds that otherwise would have been available to cover the cash flow problem have been used to settle marquee obligations.

“We had to use the existing money that we would normally use from the [Rialto] foundation to pay Mr. Czerkies and to pay what we need to pay Landmark signs,” he said.

WCMEAA Chairman James Smith said the Rialto financial crunch actually started a year ago when pre-sales on tickets for the 2014-15 season were about $100,000 lower than anticipated.

“If you combine that with the marquee and the payment to Mr. Czerkies, it all snowballed,” Smith said.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said the City Council likely will discuss the advance on Rialto payments at the Tuesday meeting.

The Rialto probably will get the advance on the payments, but there may be conditions, he said.

“We want to make it clear what our position is,” O’Dekirk said.

JOLIET – A judge will decide if a teenage murder suspect’s rights were violated before he was indicted by a grand jury.

Defense attorney Cosmo Tedone said the indictment against Christopher Stamps, 17, should be dismissed because the involvement of Will County Sheriff’s detectives prejudiced proceedings against Stamps.

Tedone and Assistant Will County State’s Attorney John Connor argued Monday before Judge Dave Carlson. Lawyers frequently cited case law during the one-and-a-half-hour hearing, but did not call any witnesses.

On Oct. 23, 2014, Latray Wright, 16, was walking with a friend near Princeton and Fairmont avenues in Lockport Township when he was gunned down by the occupants of a blue car.

Will County Sheriff’s police said Stamps and Wright belonged to different factions of the same street gang and engaged in a dispute over insults posted on social media websites.

At an earlier hearing, Stamps’ relatives told Carlson they were “intimidated” by the presence of detectives in the

room as they testified to the grand jury in November.

“Obtaining grand jury testimony from these witnesses [was to] preclude them from providing an alibi,” Connor said Monday. “They may not have been aware of that at the time.”

State law does not prohibit investigators from attending grand jury proceedings and Connor said prosecutors regularly confer with them between questions for witnesses.

Connor acknowledged a detective asked one witness, “When you got to your mother’s on [Oct.] 23 what time did you go to sleep,” a question that should have been asked by a prosecutor.

“That was a technical error ... [one time over] three separate days of testimony,” Connor said. “We’re asking the court to look at the totality [of proceedings].”

Carlson said he will decide on the motion next week.

After Stamps’ court appearance in January, three men allegedly beat another man just outside the courthouse. Christian M. Blackwell, Makhi T. Jones, and Martell K. Jones, were arrested at the scene on charges of aggravated battery and mob action.

Olivia Skummer from Plainfield South High School and Mallory Johnson from Lincoln-Way Central High School were chosen among 200 members of the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois Class of 2015.

The program provides tuition assistance to recipients as they pursue an undergraduate education.

Jeanell Dohrman, a Joliet Central High School senior, also was selected as a Golden

Apple Scholars this year.

Golden Apple, a nonprofit organization, offers its program to students to help them become teachers. The program begins the summer after high school graduation and continues throughout students’ undergraduate years.

Internships, mentoring and course work are some of the program’s benefits.

Skummer said she put a lot of effort into becoming a Golden Apple Scholar, practicing for interviews and writing essays. She said she aspires to work with students with special needs.

“It’s always been a kind of life passion since the sixth grade to become a special education teacher,” she said.

Skummer said students with special needs may face many issues, but they are genuine and happy. She said more people are needed who can care about and influence them.

New season for ‘Concerts on the Hill’ begins Thursday

By THE HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – The 41st “Concerts on the Hill” season begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park in Joliet.

The series runs at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday throughout June, July and August, according to a news release. The shows at the park at 201 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet are free, as is the parking in the park and in lots south of Jefferson Street.

The first concert features the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, directed by Lawrence Sisk, and the award-winning Joliet American Legion Band, directed by Tom Drake.

Joliet Junior College chef wins Food Network reality show

By THE HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – Andy Chlebana, pastry chef and culinary instructor at Joliet Junior College, took the top prize of $50,000 in the “Spring Baking Championship” that aired on the Food Network.

According to information from the Food Network, competitors on each of the six hour-long “Spring Baking

Championship” episodes – hosted by Bobby Deen – tested their abilities and attempted to win over judges with various spring baking chalAndy lenges.

Baking Champion, which Chlebana now holds.

“I am so excited to win this. I don’t know what to do,” Chlebana said when he found out he won, according to a video clip available on the Food Network website.

Chlebana cooked a triple vanilla cake that earned the praise of judges Lorraine Pascale and Nancy Fuller, although judge Duff Goldman

said, “it is kind of a one-note sort of thing,” as seen in a video clip.

When asked by Deen what the money would mean for him, Chlebana answered it would be “life-changing, we’d get to do things we’d never done before, put some money away for college.”

Chef Michael McGreal, chair of JJC’s culinary arts department, said before the

show airing that he was proud that, out of the numerous chefs and celebrities the Food Network could have selected for the new show, the producers chose Chlebana as a competitor.

“We tell our students that to get ahead in this industry they will need to work hard,” McGreal said in April, “but hard work will lead to success.”

New Grundy County official ready to use financial skill set

Morris Council hears plans for proposed medical marijuana facility

By MIKE MALLORY MORRIS – The location of a medical marijuana dispensary in Morris remains undetermined.

As of press time, Morris City Council had heard a presentation by Greenhouse Group LLC requesting a Conditional Permitted Use to operate a medical marijuana dispensary at 2400 W. Route 6 in Morris, the former Rockwell Inn. The council meeting still was ongoing as of press time.

Sen. Sue Rezin R-Morris spoke before Greenhouse Group began its presentation, Rezin asked that the city consider other locations after receiving calls from people against the location.

“I ask that you find a location that works for all involved, and I don’t believe this is the one,” Rezin said.

The location is near two subdivisions that were represented at the meeting, but the portion dedicated to public input had not yet began.

Greenhouse Group LLC CEO Matt Darin elaborated on the comprehensive plan for the location, which will be marketed as a wellness clinic, a destination that is not looking to attract traffic with neon signs.

“The dispensary is not open to the public,” Darin said.

Darin said the location would feature 24-7 surveillance with more than 30 security cameras that are linked to the Illinois State Police and remain on line for 90 days.

Darin acknowledged that there is a fear of the unknown when it comes to safety measures, but he said studies in California and Colorado show no correlation between boosted crime and medical marijuana dispensaries.

On Wednesday, the Morris Planning Commission voted 4-1 to recommend the council approve the CPU. More than 30 people attended that public hearing, the majority of whom represented opposition to the dispensary.

But the vote expected Monday night by the council is only in regards to land use, not whether a dispensary would be allowed in Morris. The state already made that possible.

In February, Gov. Bruce Rauner awarded 52 licenses to grow and sell medical marijuana in Illinois. The decisions were not controlled by local municipalities.

Greenhouse Group applied for a CPU permit once before, and withdrew its application in late April after a day care owner, along with employees and customers of a dance studio, submitted formal objection letters to the city. It was discovered the prospective facility was within 1,000 feet of the day care.

The Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act prohibits a dispensary from being within 1,000 feet of a pre-existing preschool, elementary or secondary school, day care centers or homes, or group day care homes.

He said the learning curve is the biggest challenge he foresees as he learns how the public sector functions. He believes board members have put forth a good effort to move the county forward, including the recent hiring of Human Resources Director Deborah Jankiewicz and IT Director Tim Doss.

“There is some good staff in the building and in new positions. The board has taken the steps to move forward,” Pryor said. “I’m excited to be part of that vision.”

Welter said the board set out to fill the positions with professionals rather than just filling the position with anyone. Welter said Pryor is the final piece to an already great team.

The county has had four administrators since 2011.

MORRIS – Doug Pryor brought his financial experience to Grundy County on Monday, starting in his new position as county administrator.

“It’s budget season, so I’ll be diving into the budget right away,” Pryor said as he sat at his new desk with piles of financial paperwork.

“They gave me a list to start with,” he said. “There is Doug Pryor a lot of learning involved with the county.”

Pryor’s hiring was approved 14-1 last month by the Grundy County Board. He was most recently vice president with the Grundy Economic Development Council,

Born: March 5, 1925; in Bradford, IN Died: May 27, 2015; in West Frankfort, IL Margaret Castrale, age 90, of West Frankfort, Illinois, formerly of Elwood, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Westside Care Center in West Frankfort.

Born March 5, 1925 in Bradford, Indiana, Margaret was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Senetto) Masse. She was a longtime employee of Reavis High School in Burbank and Uarco Printing Firm in Chicago.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Mike Castrale; two sons, Michael (Joyce) Castrale and Larry (Phyllis) Castrale; four grandchildren, Amy, Amanda, Craig, and Jesica; four great grandchildren, Thomas, Cody, Aidan, and Eleni; and several nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Masse; and sister, Edith Vogrich.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Saint Rose Catholic Church, 604 S. Kankakee St. in Wilmington, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of funeral service 11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Robert Noesen officiating. By JOHN ROGERS – The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Betsy Palmer, the veteran character actress who achieved lasting, while not necessarily sought-after, fame as the murderous camp cook in the cheesy horror film “Friday the 13th,” has died at age 88.

Palmer died Friday of natural causes at a hospice care center in Connecticut, her longtime manager, Brad Lemack, told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Palmer had appeared in films, on Broadway and in TV shows for decades before she took the role of Mrs. Voorhees in the campy 1980 movie in which young camp counselors suddenly begin meeting their bloody demise. The back story was that she was the mother of Jason Voorhees, who had died at the camp years before. He would come to life in several sequels that Palmer passed on.

She would say in later years that she only took the role in that first film because she wanted the money to buy a new car.

Palmer had appeared in numerous TV shows dating to the early 1950s Golden Age of Television. Among them were such classic dramas as “Kraft Theatre,” ‘’Playhouse 90” and “Studio One.” Her film credits included “Mr. Roberts” with Henry Fonda, “The Long Gray Line” with Tyrone Power and Maureen O’Hara, “Queen Bee”

with Joan Crawford, and “The Tin Star” with Fonda and Anthony Perkins.

Other TV credits included “Knot’s Landing,” ‘’The Love Boat,” ‘’Newhart,” ‘’Just Shoot Me” and “Murder, She Wrote.”

She also appeared in several Broadway plays, including “Same Time, Next Year” and “Cactus Flower.”

Palmer is survived by her daughter, Melissa Merendino.

Arthur J. Melcher, age 92, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with his family by his side.

Born September 22, 1922, in Braidwood, he lived in Joliet most of his life. Art was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II. After the war, Art and his brother, Don, had a Clover Farm Grocery Store in Frankfort.

When they closed the grocery store, Art began his career with State Farm Insurance in New Lenox, where he was an insurance agent for 34 years retiring in 1995.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 58 years, Dorothy (Hayes) Melcher, and that union was blessed with Art’s eight surviving children, Jim (Judy), Ray (Sue), Sharon (Craig Woodworth), Bob (Bonnie), Bill, Marianne Melcher, Terrie (John) Murphy, and Kathy Miller; 22 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Art was blessed to find love and companionship again, and is survived by his current wife, Marilyn Sackman Melcher, and that seven year union added to his family, David (Mary Ellen) Harris, Linda (Terry) Stapleton, and Darren (Marie) Sackman; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nephews.

Art was preceded by his parents, Arthur and Anastasia Melcher; three brothers; and one sister.

The family wishes to thank his doctors, Presence St. Joseph Medical Center Cardiac ICU, and Joliet Area Community Hospice Home for their excellent care and comfort given to Art and his family during his recent illness.

Hastert to appear before judge who donated to campaign

CHICAGO – Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert is set to make his first court appearance in his hush-money case Thursday, when he is expected to enter a plea before a federal judge who previously donated $1,500 to the then-Illinois congressman’s re-election campaign.

The arraignment for Hastert, a Republican who was once second in line to the U.S. presidency, comes a week after a grand jury indictment alleged he agreed to pay $3.5 million to ensure someone from the Illinois town where he taught and coached stayed quiet about “prior misconduct” by Hastert.

The office of U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin confirmed the arraignment date, then told The Associated Press later Monday that Durkin could not comment on any aspect of the case, including whether he might recuse himself.

The indictment charges Hastert, 73, with one count of evading bank regulations by withdrawing $952,000 in increments of less than $10,000 to skirt reporting rules. He also is charged with lying to the FBI about the reason for the unusual withdraws. If convicted, Hastert faces a maximum fiveyear prison sentence on each count.

Panel recommends censure for U of Illinois over Salaita

URBANA – The American Association of University Professors later this month will decide whether to censure the University of Illinois over the decision not to hire a professor following his anti-Israel tweets.

A committee within the association that deals with academic freedom and tenure recommended censure on Saturday for the school’s choice not to hire Steven Salaita for a tenured job to teach Native American studies classes. The committee’s recommendation now will be forwarded to the full association for consideration at its annual meeting June 13 in the nation’s capital.

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court strengthened civil rights protections Monday for employees and job applicants who need special treatment in the workplace because of their religious beliefs.

The justices sided with a Muslim woman who did not get hired after she showed up to a job interview with clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch wearing a black headscarf.

The headscarf, or hijab, violated the company’s strict dress code, since changed, for employees who work in its retail stores.

Employers generally must accommodate job applicants and employees with religious needs if the employer at least has an idea that such accommodation is necessary, Justice Antonin Scalia said in his opinion for the court.

Boston Marathon bomber friends face sentencing

BOSTON – It was three days after the stunning bombing of the Boston Marathon, and the FBI was asking for the public’s help in identifying two suspects by releasing photos of them mingling with the crowd.

Hours later, three friends of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were in his dorm room. One later was convicted of obstructing the bombing investigation by removing items from Tsarnaev’s room while a second pleaded guilty to identical charges; a third was convicted of lying to the FBI.

All three – friends who attended the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth with Tsarnaev – face sentencing this week.

Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, both natives of Kazakhstan, impeded the investigation by taking Tsarnaev’s backpack and computer from his dorm room. Robel Phillipos lied about being with them in Tsarnaev’s room when they removed the items.

Sepp Blatter, FIFA facing more criticism this week

LONDON – In the House of Commons, they’re calling for Sepp Blatter’s head. And even inside the FIFA president’s own executive committee, there is the threat of resignation.

A new week has brought new turmoil for soccer’s embattled president and his scandal-tainted governing body, which is in the midst of the worst corruption case in its 111-year history.

“For the good of the game, it is time for Sepp Blatter to go,” British sports and culture secretary John Whittingdale told the House of Commons on Monday.

The newly re-elected Blatter seems to be going nowhere despite the arrests and indictments of several soccer officials last week in Zurich, but others are calling it quits or threatening to do so. FIFA medical chief Michel D’Hooghe, the longest-serving executive committee member, said he would leave unless there were rapid reforms.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – However Congress resolves its impasse over government surveillance, this much is clear: The National Security Agency ultimately will be out of the business of collecting and storing Americans’ calling records.

Aiming for passage Tuesday afternoon, the Senate on Monday prepared to make modest changes to a House bill that would end the collection while preserving other surveillance authorities.

But while Congress debated, the law authorizing the collection expired at midnight Sunday.

The NSA had stopped gathering the records from phone companies hours before the deadline. And other post-9/11 surveillance provisions considered more effective than the phone-call collection program also lapsed, leading intelligence officials to warn of critical gaps.

The legislation now before the Senate, known as the USA Freedom Act, would reauthorize the surveillance but would phase out NSA phone records collection over time.

It passed the House overwhelmingly and is backed

by President Barack Obama.

Sen. Rand Paul, who doesn’t believe it goes far enough in restricting the government, objected anew on Monday, but he can’t stop a vote to end debate scheduled for Tuesday morning.

If the bill becomes law over the next few days, the NSA will resume gathering the phone records but only for a transition period of six months, in the House version, or a year in the Senate version.

If the bill fails amid congressional politics, the collection cannot resume, period.

Senators on the intelligence committee had been issuing veiled and vague warnings about the program for years, saying if Americans only knew how the Patriot Act was being interpreted they would be outraged.

But it was Snowden who revealed the details.

Because of Snowden, “people have some more insight into exactly how they are being spied upon and how the law has been twisted to authorize mass surveillance of people who have no connection to a crime or terrorism,” said Harley Geiger, senior counsel with the Center for Democracy and Technology, an advocacy group that supports the USA Freedom Act. Still, the current legislation would hardly count as a defeat for the NSA, Snowden’s former employer.

Agency officials, including former Director Keith Alexander, have long said they had no problem with ending their collection of phone records, as long as they could continue to search the data held by the phone companies, which the legislation allows them to do.

The USA Freedom Act doesn’t address the vast majority of Snowden revelations, which concern NSA mass surveillance of global Internet traffic that often sweeps in American communication.

If the legislation fails and the surveillance provisions expire, that would be a blow to U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies. Besides the phone-records provision, expiration of the Patriot Act has meant a halt in the FBI’s authority to gather business records in terrorism and espionage investigations, and to more easily eavesdrop on suspects who are discarding cellphones to avoid surveillance.

“There are specific tools that our national security professionals have previously used ... that they can as of today no longer use because of the partisan dysfunction in the United States Senate,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Monday.

The amendments proposed by Sen. Richard Burr, the North Carolina Republican who chairs the intelligence committee, were designed, he said, to win quick House approval.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR JT History Fair is judged a success

To the Editor: Recently, I had the pleasure of participating as a volunteer judge for the Joliet Township High School History Fair and World A-Fair presented by the junior and freshman students.

Over two days at JT Central, I listened to and judged close to 100 presentations.

Like any projects, some students were better prepared than others, but I was impressed they all had presentations ready.

Their verbal skills were very good; and while the freshmen relied more on their notes, all were able to present their topics in well-organized manners. When dealing with younger generations, I have noticed a decline in verbal skills and the simple ability to maintain eye contact during conversations. These students were a breath of

fresh air, as they restored my faith in their communication skills.

Besides doing their prepared presentations, they all were conversant and demonstrated backup knowledge of their topic when I asked follow-up questions.

Hats off to Alberto Filipponi and the staff and students for their hard work; I hope the fairs become part of their yearly programs.

If you have the opportunity to volunteer as a judge or participate in other activities at JT, do it and enjoy time with today’s students. We could have used more judges, as while the goal was to have each student give their presentation at least once, they deserved to be able to present their projects more times to improve their skills and confidence.

Rauner’s overlording lobbyist ban is ineffective Forget about the budget, forget about Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda,” forget about the almost unprecedented animosity during the spring legislative session between Democrats and Republicans.

The most talked-about issue under the Illinois Statehouse dome last week was a directive from one of the governor’s top staffers to all state agency directors.

The agency directors received an order from the Rauner administration Wednesday demanding they and their staffs not meet or talk with any lobbyists unless the governor’s Policy Office first had approved the communications.

The directors also were told to inform agency “stakeholders” they didn’t really need to hire lobbyists anyway.

The governor’s press office refused several entreaties to comment on the ban.

“We have continued concern about outside interests’ attempts to influence the use of state resources and state policy,” Rauner’s deputy gov-

Most lobbyists were shocked at the governor’s order, but some almost immediately came up with a plan to get around it.

Instead of contacting the agencies directly, they’ll ask their favorite legislators to make the calls. But that obviously won’t work for those who don’t lobby the General Assembly.

The Democrats fully exploited “the spoils of war” when they were running everything. The Republican governor is doing the same now, but in a particularly Raunerish way. Legislative Republicans already are bending over backward whenever he commands. He’s now extending his power over much of the rest of the Statehouse crowd.

By MIKE FITZGERALD Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Minooka righthander Cristian Sanchez quieted the Plainfield South bats Monday, pitching a five-hit, 2-0 shutout to give the Indians baseball team the Class 4A Joliet West Regional title.

Minooka (22-13) will play Normal West at 6 p.m.

Wednesday in the Bloomington Sectional at Illinois Wesleyan University.

The Cougars (24-11) came into the game having scored 26 runs in their two previous regional games. South threatened in the top of the first when Austin Male singled to right and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Nick Mayerhofer. Marco Escobar then singled to right, and Male raced for the plate, only to be cut down by a throw from Minooka right fielder Tyler Paulsen.

“That play was huge. He’s got a great arm. He’s got a lot of tools out there, and he’s an awfully talented kid,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said of Paulsen. “You know it’s going to be a close game, so you know they’re certainly going to send that runner. It was a great throw – right on the money.”

Petrovic watched that play and the game from outside the playing area, as he had to sit out the regional final because he was ejected from the semifinal game against Joliet West.

Cougars coach Phil Bodine had no regrets about sending Male home on the play.

“We had our chances early.

The kid made a great throw to the plate,” Bodine said. “I know he’s got a strong arm, but a lot of things have to happen for you to throw somebody out.”

Sanchez helped his own cause in the bottom of the first inning when his RBI groundout to second scored Hayden Laczynski from third base. Laczynski led off the inning with a double to left and moved to third on Jake Null’s bunt single.

The senior right-hander, who will pitch for Iowa next year, then held the Indians scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Ritter retired the next two hitters before Paulsen doubled down the left-field line to score Null with an insurance

Ritter gave up six hits in six innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

“I knew before the game it was going to be a close game,” Ritter said. “I thought with our offense the last couple of games – I think we scored 26 runs the past two playoff games – I told them give me three runs and we’ll win this game, but we came up short.”

Sanchez, a senior righthander, pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits along the way. He struck out six and walked one.

The Cougars only advanced one runner to second base after the first inning.

“I knew coming in that we were facing a really good pitcher,” Sanchez said. “He’s going D-I to Iowa, and I knew that if we were going to beat him, that we would have to keep their runs low, and we would try to have to find a

way to score off Ritter.

“It wasn’t how we drew it up. We didn’t get the big hits, but one run was good enough.

As long as I have defense and I can trust my guys to get the outs, I’m going to go do my part on the mound, and we came out with the win.”

Sanchez pitched Minooka to an earlier, 5-1 Southwest Prairie Conference win over South, going 3 for 4 in the process. On Monday, he did a good job of locating his fastball, allowing it to set up his breaking ball.

“I had my fastball. I was able to locate it,” Sanchez said. “I’m not a guy who is going to overpower people with my fastball. What I can do is throw at the corners, and once you can get the corners and get them guessing, you can come back with that breaking ball. When you move in and out on the corners, you can open up the strike zone.”

YORKVILLE – After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in bottom of the first inning and winning, 3-1, it might appear that the Lincoln-Way Central softball team won the Class 4A Yorkville Regional title in the first inning Monday.

But it took great pitching from Melanie Bakotic and great defense behind her for seven innings to lift the Knights over Joliet West.

“It was all about Melanie Bakotic pitching. She was lights out,” Central coach Jeff Taraia said. “Yeah, we did hop on them early with the three runs, but we didn’t score the rest of the game. Melanie just pitched like she can pitch.

She’s one incredible talent and one incredible young lady.”

Bakotic (6-2) struck out nine, walked two – one intentional – and scattered six hits.

“Colleen McLaughlin, the catcher, and I have a really good bond,” Bakotic said.

“That helps, and the infield always has my back, so I know that if I don’t strike out every single person – which no one really does – I know that they have it behind me.”

The only run that West (2210) scored came in the third inning when Alysia Rodriguez drove in Jen Ames, who had doubled. By that time, the Knights (27-10) did all the damage they needed offensively.

Jackie Farbak started it off with a single to center field.

Brianna Schultz stepped up and perfectly placed a bunt single. McLaughlin doubled to drive in Farbak to give Central a 1-0 lead.

Naidelyn Medina and Bakotic each had sacrifices that scored Schultz and McLaughlin to make it 3-0. With two outs, Abigail Baez singled and stole second. Alyssa Klahn walked. Madi Mulder caught Courtney Kinney’s drive to strand two. That was it for the scoring.

The Tigers pushed throughout but couldn’t get past Bakotic and the defense.

“We didn’t get the clutch hit that we needed, and they did,” West coach Heather Suca said. “They’re a good team.

They’re a good program. They put the ball in play and made things happen.”

Second baseman Ames, pitcher Kiley Robb and shortstop Rodriguez played strong games for West.

Ames had three hits, one a double, and was intentionally walked in the seventh inning.

Robb – who went the distance after taking a hard hit in the first inning – pitched well, while Ames and Rodriguez were strong defensively.

“It wasn’t from lack of effort,” Suca said. “They were hyped. They played together.

They really came together as a team halfway through the season. It just wasn’t our day. It was Lincoln-Way’s day.”

Not only did Bakotic and the defense dominate, the offense also was consistent. The Knights had two four-hit innings and had at least one hit each inning.

Farbak led the offense with three hits and reached each of her four at-bats. Schultz had two bunt singles, McLaughlin had two hits and Medina, Bakotic, Baez, Klahn and Campbell each added one.

“Everyone did great,” Farbak said. “Every single person – I think there’s 21 of us now – and each person plays a part of how the team does, whether you’re in the game, on the bench, you played one inning or are holding the bat for somebody. Everyone in the dugout has a part in this game, and we couldn’t do it without one of them.”

Lincoln-Way Central will face Lincoln-Way East at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Joliet Central Sectional semifinal.

“They’re extremely tough,” Taraia said. “They’re well coached. Liz Pawlicki does an unbelievable job with them.

Gralla, Acton help Lemont oust JCA

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Mike Gralla had the two-out hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to ignite the two-run rally that gave Lemont a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart-Griffin in the 2014 Class 3A state championship game at Silver Cross Field.

On Monday at the Lemont Sports Complex, the Indians’ senior right fielder was up to his old tricks.

Gralla singled off the glove of Joliet Catholic’s first baseman in the top of the ninth inning, and a sliding Austin Tittle barely beat the diving tag of Hilltoppers catcher Nick Dalesandro to give Lemont and junior right-hander Garrett Acton a 2-1 victory in the championship game of the Class 3A Lemont Regional.

“If there’s one kid with ice water in his veins, it’s Gralla,” Lemont coach Brian Storako said.

Acton and JCA junior righthander Drake Fellows waged quite a duel. Both went the distance, allowing second-inning runs and then nothing until Gralla’s hit in the ninth.

“With Drake on the other side, I knew I had to battle and keep the score low,” said Acton, who allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked one. “The adrenaline definitely was going. When I needed a big pitch, I was able to find that little extra.”

Acton had some struggles early on this season, then had to battle through a groin injury. He had two relief appearances late in the regular season, and Monday’s start was his first in about three weeks.

But he managed to complete a 124-pitch effort.

“There was no way I was coming out,” Acton said. “I just had to stay effective and get the outs.”

“The Acton boy did an unbelievable job,” JCA coach Jared Voss said. “That was an impressive performance.”

“Garrett has all the tools,” Storako said. “This was perfect timing for him to pitch this game.”

13, walked one and allowed seven hits. Tittle received the walk on a 3-2 pitch with one out in the ninth and moved to second on Acton’s second hit with two outs before scoring on Gralla’s hit.

“I don’t know if I was safe or not,” Tittle said with a smile.

“I knew it was close. But there

wasn’t any way I was going to stop at third.”

“You have to keep it simple against a pitcher like Fellows,” Storako said. “You have to put some pressure on them and take your shot. We did that, and Gralla got the seeing-eye single.”

Fellows, who entered 9-0

with a 0.54 ERA, threw 117 pitches, which is economical considering his 13 strikeouts.

“Drake did a great job,” Voss said.

Lemont (20-13 and the No. 3 seed in the regional) went ahead, 1-0, in the second inning. Singles by Nick Wisz, Acton and Gralla filled the bases with nobody out. Fellows struck out the next hitter and appeared on the way to escaping the threat with a 1-2-3 double play. But after the force at the plate, Dalesandro threw high to first, and courtesy runner Nate Broskovetz scored.

Dalesandro made amends with a daring baserunning play that helped tie it in the bottom of the second. He led off with a single and motored to third when right fielder Gralla couldn’t handle Howard’s fly ball in the sun and wind, putting runners on the corners.

Mike Quiram bunted with one out. Acton held Dalesandro, then threw out Quiram.

But Dalesandro broke for the

plate and got in ahead of the tag on the return throw to make it 1-1.

Connor Brandon doubled with one out in the fourth for top-seeded JCA (28-7-1) but died at second. The Hilltoppers also had runners on second with two outs in fifth, seventh and eighth but to no avail as Acton made the big pitches.

“We got guys to second and couldn’t get the big hit,” Voss said. “You’ve got to put the ball in play, and sometimes good things happen.”

Lemont, meanwhile, stranded only one runner from the third through eighth innings – a measure of how effective Fellows was.

Wisz, Acton and Gralla had two hits each for the Indians.

Dalesandro had two for JCA. “We played well,” Storako said. “This is the type of team I thought we could be at the beginning of the season. But I told the guys: It’s not how you play the first 35 games – it’s how you play the last seven.”

Providence pitcher Kendal Judge, perfect in her last outing against T.F. South, struck out 11, but the Wildcats made the most of their six hits in combination with the quartet of errors.

“That’s what it takes to beat that team – make good contact off the pitcher,” Campbell said. “That first inning, I think, took them out of their game.”

Providence coach Jay Biesterfeld couldn’t do much more than shake his head after the game.

“That was up there with our poorest effort defensively,” Biesterfeld said. “We’ve been making only one error a game on average. But we didn’t make plays, and it really came back to hurt us.

took advantage of. They hit the ball hard, forced us to make plays, and we weren’t able to do it.”

Providence’s lone run came in the top of the third. Designated as the away team because of their seeding despite playing at home, the Celtics had cut the gap to 3-1 when Demma crossed the plate on Jessica Cothern’s fielder’s choice to shortstop.

The Celtics had scored a dozen runs against the Wildcats a fortnight ago, but that was on a day when neither team’s ace was pitching. On this occasion, Central’s Brooklyn Daly (26-4) scattered three hits – one, by Garvey, after the third inning – and received spotless defensive work from her teammates in limiting Providence to that single run.

One defensive play stood out. Right fielder Gretchen Egly caught a fly ball by Tyler Young for the second out of the fifth, then rifled a short throw to first which, in the eyes of the field umpire, beat Mia Massaro back to the bag.

Double play, inning over, and with it the last real threat of the Celtics.

“Gretchen made a great play throwing it in,” Daly said.

Schlattman, having reached on Garvey’s first misplay, scored when Young, at shortstop, couldn’t handle Maria Connell’s high-hopper. The Wildcats added two runs in the second, Daly and Hannah Franceschini scoring when Garvey lost Schlattman’s second belt to center to the sun and a gust of wind.

The past three years, the Wildcats have advanced to the supersectional once and the sectional final twice. They’ve not gotten to the state finals.

“The plan is always to go to state,” Schlattman said with a giggle.

Perhaps the fourth time will be the charm.

Morris scores walk-off win for regional crown

OTTAWA – In her first atbat in Monday’s Class 3A Ottawa Regional championship game, Morris softball player Melissa Benson hit the ball hard off of LaSalle-Peru pitcher Taylor Naumann, but the end result was a flyout to center to end the inning.

In her final at-bat, in the bottom of the seventh, Benson didn’t hit it quite as hard, and the ball went to right field instead of center. The end result this time, however, ended the game, as Leah Lines tagged up from third and scored, giving Morris a 2-1 win and its second straight regional championship.

“When I came up, coach [Jen] Bamonte told me to just hit her exactly like I did my first time up,” Benson said.

“With runners on first and third and only one out, I was just hoping to not strike out.

I knew if I put the ball in play, that something would happen.”

Lines, one of two seniors in the starting lineup, began the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. She was bunted to second by winning pitcher Abby Burns, the first successful sacrifice attempt by either team, and senior Taya Torkelson singled to right to put runners on first and third, bringing up Benson.

“I was super excited to be coming up to bat in the last inning,” Lines said. “I was just thinking about my four years of softball here at Morris, and I didn’t want it to be over.

“It’s nice that we won the regional at home last year, and now we get to play the sectional at home this year.

We’re just taking it one game at a time and hope we can get a win [Tuesday] against Joliet Catholic.”

The Redskins play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a semifinal of the Morris Regional against JCA, which beat Lincoln-Way West 2-1 on Monday.

The game had begun Saturday, and LaSalle-Peru grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Morris had runners on second and third with one out and a 2-0 count on cleanup hitter Ashley Phelps when the game was called, and that’s where it resumed. Phelps popped out to first for the second out of the inning, but a wild pitch scored Jasmine Cook to tie the game at 1.

“It was good that we tied it back up when we started back today,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “That made it even and we could go from there.”

Burns made sure L-P didn’t make it uneven again, as she did not allow a hit Monday.

She gave up just one on Saturday, and so finished with a one-hitter. She struck out six and walked seven, two of those on Saturday.

“It felt good to have a new game when I went back out there,” Burns said. “I knew if I could hold them, that our offense would come through.

It was a lot like last year’s regional title game. I knew I had to get the bunt down in the last inning. We had to move the runners up, especially in a tie game.

“I didn’t even know I hadn’t given up a hit today until my dad told me after the game. I just tried to throw strikes and let my awesome defense do its job.”

In the top of the third, Burns walked two batters, but got

out of the inning when Ryan Friend snared a line drive at third. She then retired the next nine hitters before walking the leadoff batter in the top of the seventh. An attempted bunt was popped to the catcher, and Burns struck out the next hitter. The next batter walked before Janelle Brehm caught a liner at short to end the inning and bring Morris up in the bottom of the seventh.

On the other side, Morris managed just five hits off Naumann, Cook singled Saturday, while Phelps, Emily Moore, Lines and Torkelson had singles Monday.

“This was just a good game,” Lowery said. “L-P has a good program, and we knew it would be a nail-biter. It was good to see the two seniors come through in the last inning. We did a good job of executing in the last inning.”

NEW LENOX – In the long and storied athletic history of Plainfield High School (and then Plainfield Central), no team – boys or girls – had won four consecutive regional championships.

That was true, that is, until 5:27 p.m. Monday, when Providence Catholic’s Allyssa Demma popped out to Wildcats first baseman Jenny Newtoff to cement Plainfield Central’s 6-1 victory and its fourth straight Class 4A regional softball title, and the celebrating began.

“This just gives us more confidence going farther into sectionals,” said Michaela Schlattman, whose three-run homer against the wind to center field in the bottom of the fourth expanded the Wildcats’ two-run lead to five and all but clinched the victory. “Hopefully, we can show the same bats and defense.”

The outcome, aided by an uncharacteristically porous defensive effort by the Celtics on their home turf – four

errors killed them early and late – advanced the Wildcats (28-5) into a sectional semifinal against Homewood-Flossmoor at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Joliet Central. Providence closes at 22-12.

“It just gives you momentum,” Central coach Anne Campbell said of Providence’s errors. “We took advantage of it and just kept rolling.”

Campbell’s 2006-08 squads won three straight regionals but came up short in 2009. No other team in Plainfield history had won more than two consecutive regionals.

Schlattman’s belt on an inside 2-0 pitch was the third in succession she had lifted to straight center field. Providence senior Maeve Garvey misplayed the first two into two-base errors that helped account for Central’s first three runs, one in the first inning and two in the second. Garvey chased after Schlattman’s big clout in the fourth, but it cleared the fence.

“I didn’t know if it was gonna go over, and it did,” Schlattman said.

Providence strikes early as it rolls over Sandburg

That’s all the time it took for the defending Class 4A state baseball champion Providence to dispatch Sandburg, 11-0, on Monday and win the Class 4A Providence Regional.

Second baseman Mike Madej led off the Celtics’ half of the first with a solo blast over the right-field fence. Later in the inning, Jimmy Jeffries deposited a baseball in almost the same spot with two teammates on base for a 5-0 Celtic lead.

Staked to the five-run cushion, Celtic starting and winning pitcher Brent Villasenor went on to fire a four-hit shutout at Sandburg (18-14). The home runs were the third of the season for both Madej and Jeffries.

The Celtics next will travel to the Mount Greenwood section of Chicago on Thursday to meet host Marist in a sectional semifinal, with the first

pitch set for 4:30 p.m. Marist (24-13) is at 115th Street and Pulaski Road.

“Got down 0-2 and then hammered a high pitch out of here for the big three-run homer, “ Jeffries said. “Brent [Villasenor] pitched a great game, and all he had to do was just throw strikes, which he did. If we continue to hit the ball and play defense the way we have been, we will be tough to beat.”

A large Providence crowd at Tom Dedin Field watched another five-run inning in the bottom of the third as the Celtics (26-11) opened a 10-0 lead. Madej’s two-out, tworun single climaxed the uprising.

“We came out ready today,” Madej said. “I was hitting the ball pretty good. On the homer, I wasn’t sure if I got it out with the wind blowing in, but I knew I barreled-up on the ball. Brent [Villasenor] pitched a great game.

“Marist is a good team who we defeated, 1-0, earlier in the season. If we come out and

play the way we did today, we will be fine.”

Villasenor (7-3), allowed four singles while striking out two and let his defense put on a show behind him.

“We hit them with a five-run first and really killed their confidence,” Villasenor said. “My fastball was working well, and I just pitched to contact, and my defense did the rest. I pitched very well.”

Matt Waznis continued his torrid hitting for the Celtics, going 3 for 3 with an RBI. “We really came out and played a great game today,” Providence coach Mark Smith said. “Mike (Madej) really got us started with his home run, and then Jimmy hit his threerun shot that highlighted our five-run first, which was the key to the game.

“Brent pitched an outstanding game for us, and we played exceptional defense.

On Thursday, we play a very good Marist team, at their place, which should be a great game.”

OSWEGO – The second time through the order proved to be a spark for Plainfield North baseball Monday in the Class 4A Oswego Regional championship game.

North scored three runs in the third inning against Metea Valley ace and Western Michigan-bound Jack Szott en route to a 4-1 victory and a spot in the Romeoville Sectional semifinal.

No. 3 North (28-7) will face Naperville Central at 4 p.m.

Hammel strikes out 11, Cubs top Marlins

By STEVEN WINE The Associated Press MIAMI – Jason Hammel had a career-high 11 strikeouts in 62⁄3 innings Monday night, and the Cubs beat the Miami Marlins, 5-1.

With his start pushed back because of a cracked fingernail and a rainout, Hammel (4-2) pitched for the first time in eight days, and he seemed to benefit from the extra rest. He allowed one run, four hits and no walks, lowering his ERA to 2.82.

Hammel threw 117 pitches, his highest total since 2009. Two relievers completed a six-hitter, and the Marlins struck out 13 times.

The Cubs had scored only 13 runs in their previous seven games, and they showed a little offensive life with eight hits. Starlin Castro hit his

fourth homer, and Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant each had an RBI double.

Jose Urena (0-2), making his second major league start, improved on his rocky debut but allowed three runs in six innings. The Marlins fell to 4-10 under manager Dan Jennings.

The Cubs scored twice in the first, when their first three batters reached. Rizzo doubled home a run, and another scored on Jorge Soler’s groundout. Addison Russell’s two-out RBI single in the fourth made it 3-0.

Sloppiness by the Cubs helped the Marlins score their only run in the fourth.

Giancarlo Stanton singled, took second on a wild pitch, stole third and continued home when catcher Miguel Montero’s errant throw sailed into left field.

The Bulls plan to introduce Fred Hoiberg as their new coach Tuesday, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

Hoiberg long had been rumored as the replacement for Tom Thibodeau, who was fired last week after five seasons in Chicago.

The Bulls said in a release they would make a major announcement Tuesday.

Hoiberg went 115-56 with the Cyclones, including four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles. He had open-heart surgery in April.

It was a disappointment, but his mother Deanna Steinhauser isn’t complaining.

Dominic, who has CHARGE syndrome and just turned 7, is excelling in school, especially in math, reading and gym, Deanna said. And he has a plethora of friends.

“When he was born, the doctors told us our son would be blind, deaf and mute,” Deanna said. “It was a hard thing to hear when we were being inundated with so many medical issues.”

According to the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation at www.chargesyndrome.org, CHARGE was coined into 1981 to describe certain newly recognized features: Coloboma (gap) of the eye, heart defects, atresia of the choanae (narrowing in the rear nasal opening), retardation of growth and/or development, genital and/or urinary abnormalities, and ear abnormalities and deafness.

For Dominic, it means impaired hearing and vision, narrow airways and tube feeding. Even swallowing water is dangerous, Deanna said, as liquid goes straight to Dominic’s lungs.

“At dinner, he sits with his fake food and utensils and pretends to eat with us,” Deanna said. “The other morning, he said he wanted ice cream for breakfast, so he had his fake ice cream cone. He laughed at us because he got to have ice cream and we didn’t.”

For instance, in April, Dominic had his floppy right ear reconstructed so he could wear a hearing aid, Deanna said.

All went well until Dominic’s ear, nose and throat doctor checked Dominic’s airways.

The procedure caused dangerous swelling.

“They had to take emergency steps to keep him breathing,” Deanna said. “It’s the first time since Dominic was born that I had to call my husband at 1 a.m. and tell him to come back to the hospital.”

Current discussion focuses on whether Dominic requires a tracheotomy. It’s another opening into his body that could lead to infection, but open airways might reduce the number of viruses he contracts, Deanna said. It also would ease periodic suctioning.

Conversely, supplemental oxygen at night has eliminated apnea episodes, as did removing Dominic’s tonsils and

adenoids. And despite Dominic’s noisy breathing, the only time he struggles to breathe is when he’s fighting an illness, Deanna said.

“The ENT is concerned that if we ever had to call 911, the paramedics might not be able to intubate him,” she said. “It’s a scary feeling that they’re that narrow. He’s having a sleep study next month, and that will give us a better idea if a trach is something he needs.”

Rocky start, support in works Soon after Dominic was born, doctors said, “We don’t think his lungs are developed.

We’re transferring to a different hospital.” Within 45 minutes of the transfer, Dominic was on a ventilator and had a diagnosis.

The next day, Dominic had major surgery to connect his esophagus to his stomach.

It was the first of Dominic’s 235 procedures, Deanna said.

Having a nurse in the house by day enables Deanna and Bill to work. Their family owns

Ace Hardware stores in Tinley Park and Orland Hills.

A nurse accompanies Deanna when she takes Dominic to appointments in case he requires suctioning along the way. Deanna also relies on her mother, Kathie Rossi of Homewood, whom she jokingly calls Dominic’s second mother.

Such help means Kylie can participate in softball and mixed martial arts, and Deanna and Bill can enjoy time together, such as their annual weekend away. They also raise money for the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation.

David Wolfe of Buffalo Grove, foundation president and fundraising chair, said his son, Ethan, was 12 when he died from CHARGE complications in October. Although CHARGE is rare, a pilot grant program the foundation began four years ago has made some research possible.

A gene mutation, CHD7, has been identified, but 25 percent of people with CHARGE only have clinical signs, Wolfe said.

Still, people with CHARGE are living past early childhood, with individuals well into their 30s planning to attend this year’s conference in July, Wolfe said. Research is being conducted on mice, zebra fish and flies with CHARGE to develop better targeted therapy.

Studies are being conducted on certain stem cells of individuals with CHARGE. “It’s not a curable disorder,” Wolfe said, “but we’d like to see better therapies developed for people who have CHARGE.” To Deanna, Dominic is an average boy. He loves Uno, Rock’em Sock’em Robots, toy cars, “PAW Patrol” and watching the Blackhawks on TV. And Kylie is just amazing.

“She’s a strong little girl,” Deanna said, “and much wiser than other kids her age because she’s been through so much.”

Graduation for Will County Drug Court and Veterans Court JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow has announced that the Will County Drug Court and Veterans Court will graduate 16 people who have

successfully completed the programs and are living drug-free lives.

The Drug and Veterans Court will hold a graduation ceremony at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Victorian Ballroom of the Jacob Henry Mansion, 15 S. Richards St. in Joliet.

There will be 14 Drug Court participants and two Veterans Court participants who graduate during the ceremony. Graduates are from Lemont, Frankfort, Plainfield, Chicago, Minooka, Lockport, University Park, Naperville, Joliet, Elwood, New Lenox, Quincy and Steger.

In drug court, prosecutors and defense attorneys work with the judge and treatment providers to help abusers who have committed nonviolent offenses battle their addictions.

Those allowed into the program are carefully screened and must remain drug-free, submit to random drug tests, find employment, follow through with treatment and attend weekly drug court sessions. More than 350 participants have graduated from drug court since its inception in 1999.

Then declarer would have had to find the heart queen. But now he does not need to guess its location.

He wins with his diamond ace (top of touching honors from the closed hand), draws trumps, cashes his diamond king, and exits with a club.

The defenders take three tricks in that suit, but what can the one on lead do next?

If he chooses a heart, declarer plays second hand low and cannot lose a trick in the suit. If that defender returns a diamond or club, South ruffs in one hand and discards his heart loser from the other hand. Cool! ******

• Begin deep-breathing exercises at the beginning of a hot flash to help nip it in the bud.

• Wear loose, comfortable cotton clothing whenever possible.

• Dress in layers. Remove some clothing if you suddenly feel hot.

• Don’t smoke. Smoking can make hot flashes worse.

• Keep your house and office cool.

• At night, use lightweight blankets. Remove them as needed.

• Regularly engage in vigorous exercise.

The herbal remedy black cohosh had been previously promoted as a treatment for hot flashes, but more recent research reports that it works no better than a placebo.

Dear Doctor K: What can I do to relieve uncomfortable hot flashes?

Dear Reader: Yesterday I discussed new research showing that menopausal hot flashes can last for much longer than the “several years” the textbooks say they are supposed to last.

We are beginning to understand why women in menopause (and sometimes for years after) get hot flashes. There is a center in the brain that is constantly measuring the inner temperature of our bodies. For example, body temperature rises on a hot day, or when we exercise.

When the brain center thinks the body needs to cool off, it causes little blood vessels near the skin to open wide. You get red and feel hot, and then your body heat is released into the air near the skin. The brain center also activates glands that make sweat: Wet skin also releases heat from the body.

Before menopause, the brain center sends signals cooling the body when it sees your temperature rising just half a degree.

During menopause, the brain center sends out these cooling signals when the body’s temperature rises even less than half a degree. So you get hot flashes because the brain thinks you need to cool off.

There are things you can do to make hot flashes less severe or less frequent. Here are some lifestyle changes to start with: • Drink a glass of cool water at the beginning of a hot flash to lessen discomfort.

• Drink six to eight glasses of water per day.

• Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

• Cut down on red wine, chocolate and aged cheeses. They contain a chemical that can trigger hot flashes.

• Plunge your hands in cold water and pat it on

Dear Abby: My daughter is being married for the second time. Some of the guests were invited to her first wedding and will be invited to her second one as well.

As her mother, I don’t feel right about expecting certain guests who have already given her one wedding gift to give her another at the second wedding. How would you suggest we convey to this “select group” that a gift is not expected from them?

Would it be proper to state something such as “Your presence is our present”? – Mother of the Bride, Again Dear Mother of the Bride: NO mention of gifts should be made in your daughter’s wedding invitation. I agree that guests who gave your daughter gifts for her first wedding should not feel compelled to buy her anything more than a token gift for this one.

This goes for ANY guest who attended the first wedding, not just “select” guests, whatever that means.

Any discussion regarding gifts should be done verbally by you if you are hosting the wedding.

We’re an old married couple, and we’re not sure how to treat our daughters’ boyfriends. However, “Gerald” is the father of our new grandchild, and we think of him as family.

“Joel” is a great guy who is in love with our younger daughter and vice versa, so we think of him as family, too.

We stumbled through the holidays not knowing if we should get gifts for them. Joel is having a birthday soon. Should we get him a gift? We want to bring the boyfriends into our family and treat them like our children, but we don’t know if we’re overstepping our bounds. Can we start treating them like sons and wait for them to correct us? – Stumbling in New England Dear Stumbling: Stop stumbling.
