Superintendent hiring OK’d

Fundraising walk set for Saturday in Shorewood

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Todd Koehl will take over as superintendent of the Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C after the school board approved his hiring with a 6-1 vote Wednesday.

Koehl, who is the superintendent of the O’Fallon Community Consolidated School District 90 in O’Fallon, Illinois, will start his new post at Troy on July 14.

Troy board President Mark Griglione said Koehl was hired on a three-year contract and will make $172,000 his first year.

Koehl was hired through a search process after former Superintendent Don White resigned on May 23.

White told the board in late April he would resign, a couple of weeks before the school year ended. He left the district to become superintendent for the Hinsdale Community Consolidated School District 181.

Griglione said Koehl will be a great asset to the district.

“We were impressed with his curriculum policy and he’s a seasoned superintendent,” Griglione said.

Koehl has been the superintendent at O’Fallon for the past four years.

O’Fallon, also a K-8 district, Todd Koehl has five elementary schools and two middle schools and enrolls about 3,600 students.

“Troy is a very, very successful district,” Koehl said.

“It has excellent staff and leadership.”

Koehl knows White from the Illinois Association of School Administrators Vision 2020 subcommittee, and said he would also work on the state level to secure reliable funding for the district.

“I’m glad to hear that the state made all its payments to Troy,” Koehl said.

On Wednesday, Director of

Finance Elaine Colombo announced that the state owed nothing to Troy after making all its required payments, paving a good start to Koehl’s administration.

But before he delves into the district’s finances, he wants to get to know the strengths and passions of the current staff at Troy.

“What issues they see, they see on a day-to-day basis,” Koehl said. “I’ll be taking notes.”

Koehl said he also wants to create a better relationship with the public by promoting transparency and keeping open lines of communication within the district.

However, not everyone was pleased with Koehl’s hire.

“He wasn’t my number one choice,” said board member J. Terry McFadden, the lone vote against Koehl’s hire. “I still think he would do well, but I am concerned about the compensation package. We had a lot of very good candidates so it was tough.”

Lockport details $50M plans

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – City officials in Lockport have a plan to accomplish close to $50 million worth in construction projects over the next six years using existing revenue sources and grants.

At Wednesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, city officials presented to the Lockport City Council a multiyear capital improvement plan to complete infrastructure improvements and replacements for roughly $50 million. Between 80 and 90 projects – from fixing bridges to sidewalks to roads – would be scheduled for completion under the plan.

Funding for the annual capital improvement projects would come from funds in the city’s budget such as the water and sewer fund, motor fuel tax fund and capital fund. Money for the projects would also come from grants and other revenue sources.

The ambitious plan would

come with no new fees or taxes on residents, said City Administrator Ben Benson.

“We felt that it would be irresponsible to try to go after new revenues when we’re sitting on good reserves that we can spend now,” he said after the meeting.

According to the plan document, the city’s ability to achieve its goals will be based on the drawdown of the city’s fund balance, low interest on an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency loan, issuance of bonds, the use of annual existing revenues and state grants.

The capital improvement plan is a fluid document, said Amy Wagner, city engineering director and one of the authors of the plan. Expenses and schedules for projects would be adjusted each year based on revenue levels, funding and any unexpected events that may occur. She said much of the engineering costs for the projects will occur in the first couple of years of the plan so

they can be ready for bidding in advance.

“If we have a plan and we have committed to the plan, we can get going on the engineering of these projects immediately,” she said. “We can have them engineered, we can have plans ready to go and sitting on the shelf.”

The total number of projects and costs – including future engineering costs – under the plan each year: • 2014: 14 projects, $8.8 million • 2015: 20 projects, $13.4 million • 2016: 14 projects, $10.9 million • 2017: 13 projects, $5.5 million • 2018: 9 projects, $3.7 million • 2019: 9 projects, $3.7 million • 2020: 5 projects, $3.4 million Council members are not set to vote on the plan just yet, and Lockport city officials are asking residents for input.

New Plainfield superintendent will oversee 30 schools, 25,000 students

LAINFIELD – Associate Superintendent Lane Abrell’s first order of business when he came back to Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 last July was to visit the district’s 30 school principals and introduce himself.

“I had to know about the culture and climate,” Abrell said. “I wanted to connect with the principals and know about the good and bad things in each school.”

People who have worked with Abrell say his ability to build relationships and trust is his major strength. He’ll use it to lead the district after July 1, when the “associate” will officially drop from his title.

Abrell is taking over from Superintendent John Harper, who has led the district for the past 12 years and oversaw its expansion into the fourth largest school district in the state based on enrollment.

The district enrolls more than 25,000 students in five high schools, seven middle schools, 17 elementary schools and one pre-kindergarten school.

The 64-square-mile district includes all of Plainfield and stretches into parts of Joliet, Crest Hill, Romeoville, Lockport, Bolingbrook, Naperville and unincorporated Will and Kendall counties.

Harper, who is retiring on June 30, will take a position as principal of Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox.

But Abrell has been operating in full capacity as superintendent since March.

The transition from Harper to Abrell is a unique one, because the change was planned a good year and a half in advance, school board President Roger Bonuchi said.

district so the transition is important,” Bonuchi said.

“There’s a lot of complexity and we didn’t want to change over for a few days.”

Cohesive schools The district isn’t completely new to Abrell. He was previously the assistant principal and principal at Plainfield Central High School from 1997 to 2006.

After 2006, he left to become the superintendent of the Leland Community Unit School District 1.

“He was an amazing leader,” Leland 1 bookkeeper Rose Kidd said, commending Abrell on passing a referendum before he left that will net the district between $250,000 to $325,000 every year.

“Rural schools have a hard time with this economy. For him to pass that, it helped us out tremendously,” Kidd said.

“He also has a good rapport with teachers and the union,” Crissip said. “We never went on strike during his years here. Most contracts got settled within a few weeks of coming to the table.”

Superintendent transition When Harper announced his retirement, the board was figuring out how to find the next superintendent. One consultant told members that many new superintendents have one week before they start to lead the district.

Bonuchi said the board didn’t like that idea. So they decided on a one-year transition where they would pay the incoming superintendent a salary for a mentorship role under Harper starting July 1, 2013.

That salary, $160,000, was

small for a superintendent in a district the size of Plainfield but large for an administrator. And the district was also paying Harper more than $300,000 in salary and benefits for the 2013-14 school year.

But Bonuchi said the district essentially only paid $10,000 on Abrell’s salary this past year after accounting for the money saved on replacing three assistant superintendents that left the district.

Abrell’s salary as superintendent will increase to $205,000.

The next step was to devise a plan that would slowly transfer responsibilities from Harper to Abrell.

The plan was divided into four quarters during the 201314 school year: July through September, October through December, January through March and April through June.

“I’ve taken over all the

responsibilities, and the transition really helped,” Abrell said, noting the difficulties of a short transition when he took the position at Leland.

Abrell said the biggest challenges moving forward are keeping the district’s financials straight as state funding continues to be a shaky source of revenue and implementing the state’s Common Core standards.

“It’s hard for schools to plan things out when there are broken promises from the state,” Abrell said.

Bonuchi said he’s glad the district will have Abrell leading the district, especially with contract negotiations coming up.

“The thing that stands out is he’s a relationship builder,” Bonuchi said. “He’s very down to earth and reflects the kind of hometown atmosphere we’ve had in Plainfield for years.”

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – No clear-cut solutions on how to best address safety issues at the Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing emerged during an Illinois Commerce Commission hearing on Wednesday.

In the meantime, concrete barriers that were placed near the crossing last month to divert semitrailer traffic elsewhere as a safety measure have been taken down, and will remain that way until the case is settled, said Michael Scotti, attorney for CenterPoint Properties.

A federal judge ruled late last week in favor of CenterPoint Properties and other plaintiffs, ordering Elwood to lift the turning restrictions.

That means the village cannot prohibit trucks from using Walter Strawn Drive to reach Union Pacific’s Joliet Intermodal and others in the area until the ICC case is settled, Scotti said.

The next ICC hearing on the case is June 30.

Union Pacific suggested during the hearing that law enforcement be placed at the intersection during peak traffic times as a short-term solution, Scotti said. A news release issued by the village of Elwood after the hearing states CenterPoint made the suggestion, which village offi-

cials called a “slap in the face” to the people of Elwood amid serious safety concerns.

Scotti said the railway company, not CenterPoint, sent a letter this week to Illinois Secretary of Transportation Ann Schneider requesting some form of enforcement be placed at the crossing during peak funeral procession hours to mitigate traffic congestion. The crossing’s close proximity to the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery’s main access point off Route 53 has caused problems for funeralgoers for years.

An ICC official at one point last year also suggested posting police at the intersection during peak traffic periods.

Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes, who testified during the Wednesday hearing, told The Herald-News later that placing law enforcement at the intersection every day during peak hours is “not the solution.”

“We’ve reached out to Illinois State Police for larger fu-

neral processions in the past, and while that did help, the state doesn’t have the resources to assign someone out there every single day,” he said.

Police presence will not solve everything, he said, noting police were at the intersection back in 2012 when a semitrailer stuck on the crossing was nearly hit by an oncoming Amtrak passenger train.

Other suggestions presented either at Wednesday’s hearing or at previous hearings are: • Lengthening the delay between the red light and the crossing bars coming down to give trucks more time to clear the crossing; • Closing the crossing; • Making Walter Strawn Drive a one-way road; • Realigning Walter Strawn Road west of the Union Pacific railroad; • Prohibiting certain turns on red and adding lanes in some areas to ease the flow of traffic.

Health center proposed for Joliet Central

By SARWAT S. AHMAD Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Students at Joliet Central High School would be treated for colds, asthma attacks and other maladies in their own health center next year under a plan presented to the school board this week.

The Joliet Township High Schools board agreed Tuesday night to start a needs assessment after a presentation from the Will County Community Health Center on the benefits of a school-based health center.

Mary Maragos, chief executive officer of the health center, and Dr. Howard Ehrman, chief medical officer, made the presentation. They

will work with Joliet Central Principal John Randich to speak with parents, students and school staff to assess community health needs and the potential benefits of a school health center.

Potential benefits include improvements in attendance, academic performance and classroom behavior, along with a decrease in the dropout rate, said Ehrman. He said absences in Massachusetts and Texas were cut in half after students could receive health services at school.

Services would include school and sports physicals, immunizations, mental health services, dental care, eye exams and reproductive health services.

New band director hired for Joliet West The Joliet Township High School board this week approved the hiring of Eric Wellman as the new band director of Joliet West High School.

Wellman comes from Lincoln-Way Central High School where he was the band director since 2000.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to continue the musical excellence at Joliet West High School,” said Wellman.

Joliet West High School will introduce Wellman to parents and the community at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the school cafeteria.

The project would be designed to operate at no cost to Joliet Township District 204.

Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy said there is space for the center.

If the plan is approved, Maragos and Ehrman would apply for a federal grant of up to $500,000 to fund startup costs. Once it is operational,

health center services should be funded by students’ insurance, said Ehrman. The health center will also get uninsured students onto Medicaid.

Students without insurance would not be turned away or billed for treatment, said Maragos.

The school district plans to have the needs assessment

completed when a grant becomes available later this summer. The school board will decide later whether to move forward with the project.

Board President Jeff Pierson said that “while the board agrees with the concept there is still a lot of work to be done.”

If approved, the health center would open in fall 2015 and would be the first one in Will County. Currently, there are 64 such school health centers in Illinois and about 1,000 in the United States, according to Ehrman. Ehrman has worked with six health centers located in Chicago and Cicero while Maragos has worked in one at the University of St. Francis.

No arrests yet in killings 1 person exposed Police: Public help appreciated in case THE HERALD–NEWS DWIGHT – Dwight police said the public has been helpful in the investigation into last weekend’s double homicide, although no new developments were reported Wednesday.

Police said in a written statement released late Tuesday afternoon that they believe the shooting is “an isolated incident” and encouraged the public to continue to provide information.

No one had been arrested as of late Wednesday after-

noon in the shootings that left two women dead. Police Chief Tim Henson did not return a phone call seeking comment on the case.

Donna Denker, 60, and Kelli Denker, 30, were killed at their home at 200 W. North St. Police said they received a call at 4:38 a.m. Saturday from a man at the house saying he had been shot.

Dwight police said in the statement issued Tuesday that the man who was shot is in stable condition. They also gave his age as 23.

Police said in the statement that investigators are making progress on the case and encouraged the public to continue to provide information to authorities.

Dwight has been joined by Illinois State Police in trying to solve the crime.

“Preliminary investigative details indicate that the shooting is an isolated incident,” the statement said.

Henson said in the statement, “We have no reason to believe that the public or community is in any danger, but as a precaution, we always encourage residents and community members to report any suspicious activity to police. We are working around the clock with our law enforcement partner to locate the offender who committed this heinous crime.”

POLICE NEWS Firefighters put out Joliet basement blaze JOLIET – No one was injured Wednesday morning when a fire started in a Joliet basement.

Battalion Chief Mike Stromberg said smoke alarms went off around 6 a.m. to awaken residents of a house in the 1400 block of Herkimer Street.

“They went downstairs to find fire in the basement, got out and called 911,” Stromberg said.

WILMINGTON – One person has been exposed to rabies in Wilmington this week after coming into contact with a live bat in a backyard.

The bat is the third laboratory-confirmed case of wildlife rabies in Will County this year, according to a Will County Health Department press release. They all involved bats.

The person came into contact with the animal while attempting to give it drinking water, according to the release.

Will County Animal Control was notified and turned the bat over to the Illinois Department of Public Health, where it tested positive for rabies.

Post-exposure treatment is being recommended to the person. Anti-rabies shots have been strongly advised for all five of the animals – three dogs and two cats – living on the property.

Rabies is a potentially fatal viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected warm-blooded animal. In Illinois, bats constitute the main rabies threat, according to the release.

Will County’s first confirmed 2014 wildlife rabies case was a bat found in Joliet in May. Another bat found outside a Braidwood residence tested positive for rabies June 6.

No human exposures were identified in association with the first two cases.

Mokena prepares for return of Pvt. Toppen White said the Mokena Police Department is helping coordinate an escort from Midway Airport to Mokena.

The wake and funeral service is expected to be held at Parkview Christian Church in Orland Park, but details have yet to be finalized, White said.

In the meantime, White said the family is awaiting the return of Toppen’s body and is overwhelmed by the support.

“Tie a yellow ribbon. If nothing else, that’s something to let everybody know you care,” White said.

MOKENA – Family, friends and even those who didn’t know Army Pvt. Aaron Toppen could be found tying yellow ribbons around light poles and trees this week all throughout Mokena, awaiting the slain 19-year-old U.S. soldier’s arrival back in his hometown.

“The support we’ve received is incredible,” said Toppen’s uncle, Stephen White, former chief judge of Will County. Thousands of feet of ribbon have been

donated, and it’s estimated about 6,000 ribbons have been tied in Toppen’s honor, he said.

T o p p e n was one of five American soldiers killed June 9 in friendly-fire airstrike in Aaron southern Af Toppen ghanistan.

The Lincoln-Way East High School graduate’s body arrived back on U.S. soil last week, but it’s still unclear when he will be returned to Mokena, White said.

Minooka Summerfest, with music, 5K, parade, runs through Saturday MINOOKA – The village’s big party, Minooka Summerfest, starts Thursday and runs through Saturday, with bands, a parade, a bean bag competition, a 5K, kids’ events, good food and a lot more.

Member Scott Lemke said the festival, run by the Minooka Lions Club, is the organization’s biggest fundraiser.

“We put a lot of effort into it,” he said, “and it’s nice to see the community so involved in it every year.”

New this year are some of the stage acts, such as dancers from the Irish Music School of Chicago, line dancers for Friday’s Country Night and the School of Rock.

Lemke organized the 5K run for Saturday morning, which is predicted to have cool weather for the participants.

“We had 177 run last year,” he said, “and we’re hoping to hit 200 or 210 this year.”

The Rev. Nate Ferguson and the Village Christian Church are organizing the Kiddie Parade, a much-anticipated staple of the festival.

Ferguson said Summerfest is something he and his family always look forward to.

“We love it because it’s outside, and they have lots of stuff for the whole family,” he said.

“There are so many things for the kids, and the adults get to hang out and see their neighbors and their friends. With school just out, it’s a great way for the kids to get to see each other, too.”

Esther Louise Jacobson, age 83, a resident of Naperville, Illinois since 2006, passed away with loved ones by her side on June 10, 2014 in Barrington, Illinois.

She was born to Milo John Stefan and Myrtle Louise Stefan (Erickson) on March 30, 1931 at the family farm in Platte Lake Township, MN. She spent her formative years there and later moved to the Crosby/Ironton area.

She started her career as a teacher, upon earning her degree from Bemidji State Teachers College. Shortly after marriage to Jake, an Amoco Chemical Corporation Executive, she made loving homes for her family in Minnesota, Indiana, Alabama, Joliet, Illinois, and a summer home in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Once her children were of school age, she began an independently employed text book sales representative career for almost twenty years, retiring in 1991.

In 2006, she moved into the Monarch Landing Retirement Community in Naperville, and all of the above grew, and a wonderful community surrounded and supported her. She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Naperville. Her two primary passions were family and friends and thankfully many assisted in supporting her in her final months.

Esther is survived by her sisters, Joyce Ells, Patty (John) Trask; and brothers, Milo (Jeanne) Stefan, Lawrence (Judy) Stefan, Donald (Lori) Stefan, Vernon (Sharon) Stefan and Dennis (Nancy) Stefan.

From 1952, until his death in 2003, Esther was happily married to Walter P. Jacobson (Jake) at which time they resided in Sun City Active Adult Community in Huntley, Illinois. Beyond her siblings, she is survived by her sons, Paul (Mary) Jacobson of Fountain Hills, AZ, Dr. Mark (Tracy) Jacobson of Lexington, KY, Jay (Lisa) Jacobson of Naperville, IL. KEITH D. SLAGER

Born: Oct. 7, 1931; Joliet, IL Died: June 16, 2014; Joliet, IL Roy A. Todd “Babe” was born the son of the late LeRoy and Cecil E. (nee Hancock) Todd on October 7, 1931, in Joliet, and passed away, peacefully surrounded by his family on June 16, 2014, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home at the age of 82 years.

He was united in marriage to Patricia Breen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Minooka on the 5th day of April, 1952.

Beloved husband of 62 years to Patricia; cherished father of Kathleen Ewing, Sandra Canupp, Mary Stava and her husband, Joe and Susanne Todd; proud grandfather of Roy Ewing and his wife Tami, Jessica Canupp, Lindsay Canupp-Kleist and her husband, Chris, Spencer Sullivan and great grandfather of Amelia Ewing. Fond brother of Barbara (the late Dale) Thompson, Maxine (Dave) Gilkerson, Penny (Mike) Hrechko and Cindy (Terry) Davis, numerous nieces and nephews also cherish his memory, with special recognition and appreciation to Butch (the late Diane) Sanders for his unending kindness.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Terrence and Tracy Todd; two brothers, Wesley and Leslie “Buster” Todd and two sisters, Shirley (the late Mickey) Sanders and Merry Faye Todd.

A distinguished Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict. Following his Honorable Discharge from his military duties, Babe made his life and home in Channahon, IL. He was the owner of R.A. Todd & Sons, Inc., he served one term as Channahon Road Commissioner, was a member of the Channahon Civic Club and a 30 year board member of Channahon School District 17.

He was an avid Cubs fan, lover of country music, an enthusiast of travel and will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humor.

But above all, he was a devoted family man with unwavering integrity and honor.

CHICAGO – A Cook County judge said Wednesday that she will decide next week whether two measures, one calling for limits on the terms of lawmakers and a second that would strip politicians of the power to draw Illinois election district boundaries, can appear on the November ballot.

Attorneys on both sides of a lawsuit questioning the constitutionality of the measures debated in a crowded courtroom during proceedings that could dramatically shape what voters will see on their election ballot.

November could bring up to seven voter initiatives – four changing the state Constitution and three opinion-style questions – along with one of the most competitive and expensive governor’s races nationwide.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Mary Mikva said she would issue her written decision about the two signature-driven ballot questions by noon on June 27. She could reject both, keep both or make a split decision.

One group, the “Committee for Legislative Reform and Term Limits,” led by Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner calls for limiting legislators to 8 years in office, changing the sizes of the House and Senate and making it harder for lawmakers to override a governor’s veto.

The other group, “Yes for Independent Maps,” wants an independent commission to take over how the state draws its political boundaries, instead of leaving it to lawmakers.

That effort has hit a snag after the Illinois State Board of Elections found more than half of the signatures in a sample were invalid. Election officials granted the

group more leeway to verify signatures Tuesday, the same day they ruled the term limits question had enough valid signatures for the ballot.

With the lawsuit, the judge must decide if the proposed questions make “structural” and “procedural” changes to the Legislature.

The lawsuit contends the measures don’t meet these constitutional requirements, would changes rules for seeking office, and would affect the governor’s powers.

The Illinois Supreme Court has previously held a narrow definition for changing the constitution through a voter initiative.

“It’s too aggressive,” attorney Michael Kasper, who argued in opposition to the measures, said in court of the redistricting measure.

“It goes too far.”

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of community leaders representing business interests, among other things.

Attorneys defending the map ballot question disagreed, saying the question clearly met constitutional muster.

The measure “is designed to take politics out of the redistricting process,” attorney Michele Odorizzi told the judge.

State legislators have approved five other ballot measures, including two focused on the rights of voters, and crime victims that would change the constitution. The other three are nonbinding questions to gauge interest on raising the minimum wage, insurance coverage of birth control and a millionaires’ tax.

Republicans have argued that the sheer number of voter questions is designed to boost Democrats’ numbers at the polls in a vulnerable election year.

Quinn and other top Democrats deny that.

Born in Chicago, a longtime Burbank and Joliet resident before moving to Channahon 12 years ago. A graduate of the University of Illinois with a bachelors degree in Kinesiology and also Reavis High School in Burbank, IL Class of 1976. His favorite things to do were spend time with his family and friends, hunting, target shooting, fishing, baseball and riding his Harley Davidson.

Preceded by his father, Melvin “Mickey” Slager; and one brother, Daniel.

Survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Amy L. (nee Kopko) Slager of Channahon; two daughters, Catherine and Melle Slager, both of Channahon; his mother, Geraldine (nee Brandt) Slager; one nephew, Kevin Slager, both of Joliet.

A Memorial Service for Keith D. Slager will be held Friday, June 20, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. Rev. Jim McGuire officiating. As it was Keith’s request, Cremation Rites have been accorded.

In odd twist, industry agrees to ban ‘microbeads’

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Environmentalists in Illinois expected a battle royal over their call for a statewide ban on “microbeads” – tiny bits of plastic used in personal care products such as facial scrubs and toothpaste that are flowing by the billions into the Great Lakes and other waterways.

Discovered only recently, they’re showing up inside fish that are caught for human consumption, scientists say.

But instead of resisting, leading companies quickly collaborated on a ban that was enacted by the state legislature this spring. And with similar measures now pending in at least three other large states and in Congress, the extinction of microbeads is taking shape as one of the unlikeliest events in politics: a low-stress compromise.

“To have that happen in one year is rare,” said Jen Walling of the Illinois Environmental Council, recalling the pessimistic response when she initially sought legislative sponsors. “I was not predicting we’d get it done at all.”

Don’t get used to it, said Mark Biel of the Chemical Industry Council of Illinois, which represented the product manufacturers during three months of negotiations. The quick deal resulted from unique circumstances, he said, including the availability of substitute ingredients.

Curran was transferred temporarily this week from Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery near Joliet to help the Danville cemetery. The staff at the cemetery has been cut in half and that’s leading to delays in burying some veterans, a cemetery official said. One of the four staff members at the cemetery just west of the Indiana state line recently retired and another resigned. Neither is being replaced, Peter Young told The News-Gazette in Champaign on Tuesday. That means burials and cremations are limited now to one each day. Young oversees the cemetery for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

A dozen nuns said a prayer and then set off from their convent, leading a group of about 30 residents and their children in a march to Club Allure Chicago in the suburb of Stone Park.

“Our sisters are trying to pray, and you just hear the thump, thump, thump” of loud music coming from the strip club, said Sister Noemia Silva of the Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles Borromeo Scalabrinians.

It took the marchers just five minutes to reach the site. That proximity, the nuns say, means serious disruption to their way of life.

Quinn, industry urged to speed lock-and-dam fixes

CHICAGO – Members of Illinois’ congressional delegation are urging Gov. Pat Quinn and industry to pursue public-private partnerships to fix the state’s aging locks and dams.

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk, and Reps. Cheri Bustos and Rodney Davis sent Quinn a letter Tuesday urging him to coordinate with industry to take advantage of a new federal program that could speed needed repairs.

They say states could bypass the sometimes-slow U.S. Army Corps of Engineers planning, design and construction process.

Communities instead could develop “innovative financing structures” that include private funding and construction.

Banners unveiled for Lincoln funeral anniversary

SPRINGFIELD – Banners marking the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral have been unveiled.

The banners commemorating the event include a replica of the horse-drawn hearse and are being hung on light posts at the entrance of Oak Ridge Cemetery. They will also line a Springfield road leading to the cemetery where Lincoln is entombed. Sixty banners costing about $50 apiece will be hung before next spring’s event.

The 16th president’s body was carried by train in 1865 from Washington, D.C., to Springfield.

‘Sovereign citizen’ found guilty of filing bogus liens

CHICAGO – A self-proclaimed adherent of the “sovereign citizen” movement has been found guilty in Chicago of filing bogus liens against federal judges and law enforcement officials.

Cherron Phillips, 44, was accused of filing the $100 billion liens in revenge for her brother’s drug conviction. She and others calling themselves “sovereign citizens” reject federal authority.

Phillips rejected the court’s authority to try her and refused to present a defense.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that a federal jury convicted her Wednesday on 10 of 12 counts of harassing federal officials.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Lawmakers press GM on report’s findings WASHINGTON – Lawmakers expressed disbelief Wednesday at General Motors’ explanation for why it took 11 years to recall millions of small cars with defective ignition switches, and also confronted its chief executive with evidence that the company dragged its feet on a similar safety issue in different vehicles.

CEO Mary Barra and attorney Anton Valukas, who recently released a 315-page investigative report into the recall, endured skepticism and some lecturing at a House subcommittee hearing. One member referred to the actions of some employees described in the report as “insane.”

The GM recall has triggered a deeper look at ignition switches across the auto industry. On Wednesday, the government opened an investigation into reports of defective switches in 1.2 million Chrysler vehicles.

VA chief: More vets wait 30 days for appointment WASHINGTON – About 10 percent of veterans seeking care at VA hospitals and clinics have to wait at least 30 days for an appointment – more than twice the percentage of veterans the government said last week were forced to endure long waits, the acting veterans affairs secretary said Wednesday.

30 days or more is revealed in a report due out Thursday. He called the increase unfortunate, but said it was probably an indication that more reliable data was being reported by VA schedulers, rather than an actual increase in veteran wait times.

“I don’t like that we’ve got more veterans waiting, but at least we’re getting better data” as the VA seeks to address widespread problems of long patient waiting times and falsified records to mask frequent long delays, Gibson said.

U.S. man, 89, is held on Nazi death camp charges PHILADELPHIA – An 89-yearold Philadelphia man was ordered held without bail Wednesday on a German arrest warrant charging him with aiding and abetting the killing of 216,000 Jewish men, women and children while he was a guard at the Auschwitz death camp.

The man, retired toolmaker Johann “Hans” Breyer, was arrested by U.S. authorities Tuesday night. He spent the night in custody and appeared frail during a detention hearing in federal court, wearing a prison jumpsuit and carrying a cane.

Legal filings unsealed Wednesday in the U.S. indicate the district court in Weiden, Germany, issued a warrant for Breyer’s arrest the day before, charging him with 158 counts of complicity in the commission of murder.

GOP leader: Obama may act in Iraq without signoff The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama and congressional leaders believe he does not need authorization from Congress for some steps he might take to quell the al-Qaida-inspired insurgency sweeping through Iraq, the Senate’s top Republican and Capitol Hill aides said after the president briefed senior lawmakers Wednesday.

Still, the prospect of the president sidestepping Congress raises the potential for clashes between the White House and rank-and-file lawmakers, particularly if Obama should launch strikes with manned aircrafts or take other direct U.S. military action in Iraq. Administration officials have said airstrikes have become less a focus of recent deliberations but have also said the president could order such a step if intelligence agencies can identify clear targets on the ground.

Speaking to reporters as he returned to the Capitol, McConnell said the president “indicated he didn’t feel he had any need for authority from us for steps that he might take.”

Pelosi concurred with the president, saying in a statement after the meeting that Obama does not need “any further legislative authority to pursue the particular options for increased security assistance discussed today.”

She did not specify what options were discussed.

An administration official said it was the leaders who suggested Obama already had existing authorities to take additional action in Iraq

without further congressional authorization. The official downplayed the notion that Obama agreed with that assessment, saying only that the president said he would continue to consult with lawmakers.

The White House has publicly dodged questions about whether Obama might seek congressional approval if he decides to take military action. Last summer, Obama did seek approval for possible strikes against Syria, but he scrapped the effort when it became clear that lawmakers would not grant him the authority.

However, administration officials have suggested that the president may be able to act on his own in this case because Iraq’s government has requested U.S. military assistance.

“I think it certainly is a distinction and difference worth noting,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday of the comparisons to the Syrian situation.

Bleak conditions in kids’ shelters The ASSOCIATED PRESS BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Children’s faces pressed against glass. Hundreds of young boys and girls covered with aluminum foil-like blankets next to chain link fences topped with barbed wire. The pungent odor that comes with keeping people in close quarters.

These were the scenes Wednesday from tours of crowded Border Patrol stations in South Texas and Arizona, where thousands of immigrants are being held before they are transferred to other shelters around the country.

It was the first time the media was given access to the facilities since President Barack Obama called the more than 47,000 unaccompanied children who have entered the country illegally this budget year an “urgent humanitarian situation.”

The surge in minors, mostly from Central America, has overwhelmed the U.S. government.

The children pose a particular challenge because the law requires that they be transferred from Border Patrol stations like the ones in Texas and Arizona to the Department of Health and Human Services within 72 hours.

From there, they are sent to shelters for several weeks

A group of about a dozen girls of perhaps 5 or 6 sat under another tent outside the shower trailer, dark hair wet and shiny. Women wearing blue gloves combed each girl’s hair. Tables held stacks of clean bluejeans, T-shirts and toiletries.

Deeper into the yard, teen girls kicked a soccer ball and tossed a football with workers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Iraqi militants walk fine line in seized areas The ASSOCIATED PRESS BAGHDAD – In the week since it captured Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul, a Muslim extremist group has tried to win over residents and has stopped short of widely enforcing its strict brand of Islamic law, residents say. Churches remain unharmed and street cleaners are back at work. Getting around is easier now that much-despised blast walls and security checkpoints are gone.

But the militants’ restraint may only be temporary: In Fallujah, a city west of Baghdad that the group and its tribal allies solidified control over at the start of the year, residents say the militants have

begun meting out Shariah, or Islamic law, punishments in private, flogging lawbreakers and cutting off thieves’ hands.

And across the Syrian border in their urban stronghold of Raqqa, the insurgents are much more open about their ideology, killing people execution-style in the main square, banning music and imposing an Islamic tax on Christians for protection, according to activists and residents of that city.

The militant group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, has claimed to have slaughtered hundreds of captured Iraqi soldiers over the past week or so during which it seized a part of northern and

western Iraq. While the true number is unknown, video images suggest atrocities.

Its relatively light touch in governing newly conquered Iraq areas, however, seems calibrated to avoid alienating relative moderates, hinting at how an essentially small number of militants were able to seize so much territory in Iraq’s Sunni heartland so quickly.

A key question now is whether the Islamic State’s tribal allies – who currently appear to view the Shiite-led government in Baghdad as a greater threat – will turn against the al-Qaida-inspired extremist group, particularly if it implements Taliban-style

strictures.

Aziz Jaber, a political science professor at Baghdad’s Mustansiriyah University, said public opinion could easily turn against the group in the cities it now oversees.

“The only thing ISIL people are good at is beheading people,” he said.

Shortly after capturing Mosul, Islamic State fighters held a parade trumpeting their victory and roamed the city handing out leaflets warning against smoking and drinking alcohol, and promising that lawbreakers would be dealt with under Islamic law.

But the militants have done little so far to enforce those edicts, residents say.

BRIEFS Senators propose gas tax increase WASHINGTON – Two senators unveiled a bipartisan plan Wednesday to raise federal gasoline and diesel taxes for the first time in more than two decades, pitching the proposal as a solution to Congress’ struggle to pay for highway and transit programs.

The plan offered by Sens.

Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., would raise the 18.4 cents-a-gallon federal gas tax and 24.4 cents-a-gallon diesel tax each by 12 cents over the next two years, and then index the taxes to keep pace with inflation.

The increase would be applied in two increments of 6 cents each.

The plan also calls for offsetting the tax increases with other tax cuts. Senators said that could be done by permanently extending six of 50 federal tax breaks that expired this year, but they indicated they would be open to other suggestions for offsets.

Ukraine’s president offers cease-fire in east KIEV, Ukraine – The new president of Ukraine promised on Wednesday that government troops would soon stop firing on pro-Russian armed separatists, offering a chance to end the fighting that has killed hundreds and wracked the industrial east.

In another concession to Moscow, Petro Poroshenko replaced his foreign minister, who had outraged Russians by using an obscenity to describe President Vladimir Putin.

An end to the two months of fighting and a promised safe exit for rebels would allow Putin to say that Russia has fulfilled its goal of protecting Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine, while Poroshenko can claim victory over the rebellion.

Mothers, like Hillary Clinton, can lead the way I was dismayed to see the latest video from the pro-life activist group Live Action, which specializes in investigating what’s going on inside America’s “women’s health clinics.” It highlights a Planned Parenthood educational video and PP employees advising teens about BDSM – a catchall for sexual violence.

It encapsulates the darkness of “50 Shades of Grey” and a culture that is bored with sex after having so much of it. It’s a dead end.

I actually thought with some hope about our future, though, when skimming through Hillary Clinton’s new book – universally considered to be a pre-presidential campaign prop – “Hard Choices.” I confess that I have long been intrigued by the prospect of Hillary Clinton as president of the United States.

Maybe it’s the thought that my colleague Ramesh

Ponnuru put in my head when he wrote his book “The Party of Death.” He explains a dream he had about the former first lady, secretary of state and senator. “She is at the podium, well into a campaign speech.” It’s definitely a friendly crowd for her.

In Ponnuru’s dream, Clinton talks about prosecuting domestic violence and rape with tremendous sensitivity.

And she eventually reaches the point where she speaks with great love for pregnant women and then proclaims: “We should all be able to agree that 1.3 million abortions a year is way too many, and we should work together to bring that number down.

The most important thing we can do is to give women more options.” She talks about the need to support families, and the ways the government and Supreme Court can help society do that.

She says in Ponnuru’s dream, “America deserves

Ramesh’s point is that we’re not a country that’s comfortable with abortion; we’re a people who want women to have the help they need when facing an unplanned pregnancy. If Hillary Clinton actually gave a speech like this, it could just make her president.

It’s not as crazy as it sounds at first glance. Consider Melinda Gates, a leading philanthropist and the wife of Microsoft tycoon Bill Gates, who recently announced in a blog post: “When I get asked about my views on abortion, I say that, like everyone, I struggle with the issue, but I’ve decided not to engage on

it publicly – and the Gates Foundation has decided not to fund abortion.

“I understand that the abortion debate will continue,” Mrs. Gates went on, “but conflating it with the consensus on so many of the things we need to do to keep women healthy is a mistake.”

Mrs. Clinton writes about the importance of seeing women throughout the world “not as victims to be saved but as partners to be embraced.” One fundamental way to achieve this goal is to look at women’s fertility not as a condition to be managed and pregnancy not as a disease to be prevented, but something that is at the core of her identity.

In “Hard Choices,” there’s a photo of Clinton at her daughter’s wedding. She’s radiant in her flowery gown as she and her husband beam with pride and joy. What a credential! She didn’t need to be first lady, senator or

secretary of state to be a leader. Embracing who we are as women and men, made uniquely and in a wondrously complementary way, is not a political position so much as an opportunity for a cultural reset. This family thing is quite renewing – literally regenerative. Even with flaws and imperfections, it can bear quite tremendous fruits.

Promoting sadomasochistic primers for teens and “liberated women” isn’t a healthy culture. Women leading the way to an embrace of life, now that’s something that would be a bit like Hillary’s fictional speech: uniting, welcome and much more than a baby step to positive change.

It might just save our political and cultural lives, never mind our souls.

Tackling the issue of homeless veterans Fixing the problem of homeless veterans – actually, of all homelessness – is much harder than it sounds. Even with sufficient resources, homelessness is a problem that keeps coming back if we lose focus. And we have.

Still, in recent weeks we’ve made plans for a new day with a new group of disillusioned, disaffected people – especially the veterans among them.

Why veterans? Because while we hate seeing anyone homeless, down on their luck and high on self-abuse, we especially hate seeing it in someone who has served his or her country. And, frankly, the veterans are easiest to

raise empathy and bipartisan support for.

There are thousands of homeless veterans nationwide.

Fortunately, the nation is trying again to wage war on homelessness – at least for veterans. President Barack Obama announced a “mayor’s challenge” to make a new offensive in a program Obama began in 2008.

The initiative provides additional resources for veterans that may not be available for the non-veteran homeless.

The federal Veterans Assistance Supportive Housing voucher program pays for housing through HUD. That

program alone has reduced veteran homelessness nationally by nearly 70 percent since 2008, according to department figures.

The key locally is connecting organizations to do a better job of identifying homeless veterans and getting them access to programs.

If we can succeed with veterans, we can help the rest of the homeless population, as well. And that will save money for all of us.

But money aside, this is simply the right thing to do.

It is our moral responsibility, and we have put off acting for far too long.

To the Editor: Both the Illinois House and Senate adjourned after another session without effectively resolving any of the serious financial and/or social problems that affect our state.

In the private sector, if an employee fails to do their job, especially after being continually told what was their responsibility, they would be fired.

Our legislators are elected employees, elected to do the people’s work. Instead, they continue to kick the can down the road, allowing our state debt to be downgraded, jobs and businesses to leave the state, and drive us toward possible bankruptcy. When the governor calls them back into session, they do little but go to court to get extra pay.

Here’s a solution: replace them at the ballot box. Ask your local newspaper to

publish a simple-to-read chart on how each legislator voted on bills: yes, no, or no vote.

The ones that vote against real pension reform, term limits, reducing the taxes as promised, balanced budgets and spending, tort reform, effective gun control, and instead vote for pork, increased borrowing and salaries need to be voted out. Those that don’t vote also need to go.

Additionally, many of our problems are business problems, so we need to elect former business owners and managers, former military officers, accountants, doctors and lawyers, not politicians who don’t have the experience or desire to handle these problems.

I’m voting in the future for qualified business people, not do-nothing politicians. How about you?

have a nice action together, and I couldn’t ask more from those two girls. We are really improving our half-court offense, and they are a big part of that. When we combine that with the points we get off our defense and the points we get because of the speed of [guards] Latricia Dean and Brooklyn Bachmann in transition, we are going to be hard to defend.

“Sydney is definitely the more vocal of the two, and it’s nice to not have just a coach’s

voice telling the team what needs to be done.”

No one needed to tell the Indians what to do in the second half, as it was more of the game. Minooka dominated after halftime, with Knaub hitting a pair of back-to-back 3s to make it 32-17 with 11:10 to play.

MORRIS – After defeating Morris in Tuesday’s pool play in the Morris Girls Shootout, Minooka girls basketball coach Ray Liberatore said his team was well-balanced between outside and inside threats.

In Wednesday’s 47-24 win over Kaneland in the championship bracket’s third-place game, that balance showed over and over. With Kaneland concentrating on post players, Kelly Carnagio and Breana Huber, the Indians were able to free up Sydney Arlis and Emily Knaub for open 3-point attempts.

That plan worked to near perfection, as Arlis hit three 3-pointers in the first half to help Minooka pull away.

Knaub hit a pair of 3s after halftime to keep the lead intact.

“I was very pleased with the girls,” Liberatore said. “We hit five 3-pointers. Any time you can do that, it’s just great.

Those are difference-makers.

That’s 15 points right there.

“Emily Knaub tore her ACL last year, so it was nice to see her come out here and be comfortable on it. You can’t ever determine how someone is going to come back from an injury like that until you see her on the court. There was no indecisiveness or apprehension on her part when she had to move. That’s great to see.”

Arlis drained her 3-pointers in succession, helping Minooka – which finished the tournament with a 5-1 record – increase its lead from 12-8 with 5:20 to play in the first half to 22-10 at halftime. She nearly had half of the Indians’ points in the first half, while Carnagio racked up the assists.

“This is [Carnagio’s] fourth year on the varsity, and she might end up with more assists this year than the previous three years combined,” Liberatore said. “She and Sydney

After the teams traded baskets, West’s by Jenna Matthews and Morris’ by Mya Shannon, West’s Courtney O’Donnell converted a threepoint play to give the Warriors a 37-33 lead. A basket by Ponce with 2:02 left made it, 37-35, but West’s Emily Atsinger hit a 3-pointer to make it, 40-35, with 1:50 to play. Morris got to within 40-37 on a bucket by Leona Burton with 1:32 to go, but West’s Stephanie McDonald iced it with a pair of free throws with 36 seconds left.

Slammers use 6-run seventh to rally past Normal

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Things didn’t start out well for the Slammers when they welcomed a big group of day campers to Wednesday’s early game against Normal at Silver Cross Field in Joliet.

But while the youngsters waited things out during an 84-minute rain delay with their team trailing, 4-1, in the fourth inning, their patience turned out to be worthwhile.

The Slammers used the halt to their advantage, turning things around by scoring once in the sixth and moving in front with a 6-run seventh in an 8-4 Frontier League win.

Grant DeBruin (two runs) and Marquis Riley (three RBIs) both went 3 for 4 and came up with big hits in the seventh to help Joliet rally against the CornBelters (1315).

DeBruin followed up on a dropped popup by hitting a blooper to left to drive in Jose Garcia to put the Slammers (13-16) up for good.

After the next batter flew out, Riley smacked a threerun shot to right to provide the hosts with some insurance.

“I tried to put the first part of the game behind me,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said. “The part that I liked remembering in this game was the seventh inning, when we scored all of those runs.

“Before the rain came we didn’t do anything offensively, for the most part, and our pitching struggled to command the fastball and worked a lot of deep counts. It wasn’t good. I think the rain kind of helped us out a bit and cleared our heads and we got back to work.”

Joliet started its rally in the sixth when DeBruin singled, moved to second on a balk and came home on a

single by Adam Giacalone to make it a 4-2 contest.

In the seventh, Adam Lewis (2 for 4, two runs) got things started with a one-out single and then Max Casper (2 for 4) followed with another single.

After Garcia reached on an error that allowed Lewis to score, Russell Moldenhauer followed with a single to tie things up.

The Slammers caught a break when DeBruin got new life following a dropped popup. He made the CornBelters pay by getting a single to make it a 5-4 game.

“It’s definitely easy to lose focus when you have a delay like we did,” DeBruin said.

“We just stayed relaxed in the clubhouse and knew that our pitching would keep us in it, and we had great guys in the lineup that can hit the ball at any time.

“At first, I thought that the pop up was in the stands, and then I thought that he caught it. So, I was very thankful to have a second chance. It was nice to come through, especially with runners in scoring position.”

One out later, Riley effectively ended the drama when he hit a hanging slider on a first pitch for his second home run of the season to close the scoring.

“Guys got on and we put them in scoring position and then we got big hits when we needed them,” Riley said.

“Grant came up with a big hit to put us ahead and after that, everything starts rolling and it’s kind of easy then.

“Any time that you have a rain delay and go into the locker room and kind of relax, you get out of game mode. But we did a good job of staying with the game, and I think that showed later on that we were still in the game and ready to play.”

Sendzik finished with a .427 average and had a .747 slugging percentage with 18 doubles and 10 homers in her 64 hits. She also added 54 RBIs for the Tigers.

One of the greatest honors a player can receive is being named as an All-American.

But that accomplishment takes on even greater significance when the athlete not only is selected among the nation’s best players, but honored as the very best.

That’s what happened for softball player Hannah Gardner, a Providence Catholic graduate and Frankfort native.

The senior at Oliver Nazarene University in Bourbonnais was chosen as the Player of the Year in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The second baseman received All-American honors from the NAIA All-America committee, the second straight year she has received that distinction.

Gardner finished her season ranked first in the NAIA in RBIs a game (1.33), second in total RBIs (73), third in runs scored (74), sixth in total hits (90) and sixth in batting average (.533). On the season, Gardner started in 55 games and tallied 20 doubles, a team-high 12 home runs and struck out six times in 169 at-bats.

The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year hit safely in 47 contests and had a season-long 13-game hitting streak. She was part of a team to win the CCAC regular season and tournament titles, advance to the NAIA Softball World Series and hold a No. 4 ranking in the final coaches’ poll.

Gardner and senior Justine Phillips repeated as NAIA All-Americans and were joined by seniors Caitlin Santefort and Cheryl Sendzik when the NAIA announced the teams.

The foursome helped lead the Tigers to a 49-5-1 record, including winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament, the Davenport Bracket of the NAIA opening round and a trip the NAIA World Series.

Gardner, Phillips and Santefort all earned firstteam All-American honors while Sendzik was named as an honorable mention All-American.

Both Santefort and Sendzik are graduates of Lincoln-Way East and are from Mokena.

One team that has done that on a consistent basis is Team Illinois’ Cadet Freestyle Duals squad, which is for 15- to 16-year-olds.

Under the direction of Lockport’s Josh Oster, Providence graduate Donny Reynolds and Kerry Boumans, Illinois has had an impressive run of success.

Their squad added to three firsts and three seconds won during the past six years by easily capturing top honors in this year’s event at Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Illinois Cadet Freestyle squad won back-to-back championships for the first time during the seven-year span.

A 60-16 victory over Michigan Blue advanced Illinois to the title dual, where it captured a 49-27 victory over Pennsylvania Red. That capped an impressive 93-26 record in individual matches throughout the course of the event for Team Illinois.

Beside coach Oster, other members of Lockport’s program who represented Team Illinois were the coach’s brother, Shayne Oster, and Trevell Timmons.

Lincoln-Way Central’s Bryan Ditchman won all seven of his matches. He recorded three quick pins, as well as two wins by technical falls.

Plainfield North’s Markus Pavlick and Lockport resident and St. Rita athlete Austin O’Connor also were on the squad.

Three of the local competitors also had a hand in Team Illinois’ championship in the Greco-Roman Cadet Duals, which were also in Daytona Beach.

O’Connor, Pavlick and Ditchmam combined for a 14-2 record to help Illinois to seven dual meet victories in that competition.

After rolling to three 40plus point wins in pool action, Illinois captured decisive wins over California and Oklahoma Blue.

After a 48-19 semifinal win over Pennsylvania Red, Team Illinois defeated Ohio Red, 43-31, to claim the Greco championship.

CHICAGO – White Sox rookie Jose Abreu just keeps slugging, regardless of the pedigree of the pitcher he’s facing.

Abreu hit his 20th homer and Adam Dunn added a three-run shot as the Sox beat San Francisco, 7-6, on Wednesday, handing the Giants their fifth straight loss.

Abreu reached 20 homers in his 58th game, the third fewest in major league history behind Wally Berger (51 games) and Mark McGwire (56 games).

from three-time All-Star Tim Hudson deep into the leftfield bullpen for a two-run homer in the first inning .

He’s also homered off Cy Young winners David Price, Clayton Kershaw and Justin Verlander so far this year.

“We’re happy with what he’s doing,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “He’s getting some hits and important RBIs against some great pitchers, so that’s a good sign.”

Abreu didn’t know his 20th homer moved him into elite company.

“I wasn’t aware of this happening, but it’s a great thing and I welcome it,” the 27-year-old said through a

translator. “I’m just going to continue to help the team win, and that’s what it’s all about right now.”

Sox ace Chris Sale (6-1) labored, giving up three runs and eight hits through sixplus innings. The left-hander allowed 11 baserunners and at least one in all but one inning, but he walked only one and struck out seven.

“I was good, but my fastball command was a little shaky,” Sale said. “I really had to battle through it.”

“Obviously, you know you’ve got your hands full with Hudson on the other side over there. He’s been nothing short of dominant all year,” he said.

Arrieta pitches Cubs past Marlins

The Cubs right-hander had a career-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings to beat the Marlins, 6-1, on Wednesday.

Arrieta (3-1) lowered his ERA to 1.98, and he has 55 strikeouts in 50 innings.

“I’m not doing anything different,” he said. “I’m just commanding everything down in the strike zone and trying to force early contact. Strikeouts are just a byproduct of throwing several plus pitches for strikes.”

Arrieta has become one of the few bright spots for the last-place Cubs, although they have been playing better lately. By taking the rubber game

of the three-game set, they won consecutive road series for the first time since June 2013.

The Cubs went 5-5 on a three-city swing.

“We had a nice trip,” manager Rick Renteria said.

“That’s big. We’re playing some consistent baseball.”

Nate Schierholtz hit a threerun homer for the Cubs. Starlin Castro had two RBI doubles and single batting cleanup.

SAYING ‘THANK YOU’ IN A BIG WAY Former Joliet resident builds retreat lodge to honor the Joliet Franciscans that raised him

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Sister Albert Marie Papesh recalls the first time she stood on the grounds of what is now St. Francis Lodge in Minnesota.

The chapel wasn’t finished yet, Papesh said, so Mass was held on top of the hill. Attendees stood under umbrellas and withstood teeming rain and fierce winds.

“And we stayed in a camper,” Papesh said.

Papesh and two other women from the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate – Sister Therese Tusek and Sister Anne Wayrowski – recently attended the 15th anniversary celebration of the lodge’s opening and made what Papesh called her ninth retreat.

Its founders are former Joliet resident Sal Di Leo and his wife, Beth. Di Leo grew up at Guardian Angel Home in Joliet. The retreat house is Di Leo’s way of saying, “thank you” so the sisters that took care of him and several of his siblings.

The private bedroom is named for Sister David Ann, the house mother for Di Leo’s younger sister, Papesh said.

For Wayrowski, St. Francis Lodge is a prayer come true.

She had asked God if he could provide a place like this in her life – and he did, she said.

Tusek called it a “feast for the spirit and the soul.”

“About eight of us have been able to get up there,” Papesh said. “It’s peaceful and quiet. You can hear God in the whispers of the trees and leaves.”

Di Leo clearly recalls the first time he felt hope. At age 9, Di Leo retreated to the playground at Guardian Angel Home to deal with the loss of his older brother, who had just moved to Boys Town in Nebraska.

“She said, ‘Let me give you something to think about,’ ” Di Leo said. “Everyone in life is dealt a bad hand in some form or fashion. Those that do well, do the best with what they’re given, and I know you will.”

Di Leo said he then asked,

“You mean I won’t always be sad?” Spatney, he said, responded, “You can choose to be happy or sad. You can choose to be better than your father.” Knowing he had choices made all the difference for Di Leo. And what Di Leo and his wife, Beth, chose to do was build a retreat in honor of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary

Immaculate in Joliet, dedicated it to St. Francis of Assisi and open it up – free – to men and women in religious life and people experiencing terminal illness.

Spatney, 94, of Joliet, recalled Di Leo as a charmer, a leader, protector of his little sister and a go-getter. If Spatney could care for a child again, she’d want him to be like Di Leo, she said. The fact that he built St. Francis Lodge never surprised her.

“Once he made up his mind,” Spatney said. “That was it.”

Di Leo grew up number 11 in a family of 12 children. He said his father lived one step ahead of the law and eviction; their home life had no structure; it was chaotic and despairing, full of fear and anxiety and no regular meals, no clean clothes and no bathing.

“The basic things that children needed were not there,” Di Leo said.

He recalled begging for

food and how the other children at the former St. Bernard School in Joliet refused to sit by him because his stench was so bad. One sister at the school, Di Leo said, took pity on him and provided clean clothes and made sure he was bathed.

In March 1963, Di Leo and several siblings became wards of the state, he said.

“It seemed like the worse day of my life,” Di Leo said.

“We were hanging onto our mother and begging not to be pulled away from her. My father had run away forever.”

But for the first time in Di Leo’s life he had clean clothes, regular baths and a life of predictability. He attended school at St. Raymond, saw how other children lived and decided he wanted to become like them. After eighth grade – the longest children could stay at Guardian Angel – Di Leo joined his brother at Boys Town.

After high school, Di Leo worked his way through the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. For a time, he taught school and coached sports.

Remembering he could make choices, Di Leo chose to make a lot of money, which he did, through a business that, although legal, did not operate very ethically, he said.

“I fell apart,” Di Leo said.

“I had a beautiful wife, beautiful children, a nice beautiful home, but I was drinking and doing drugs; I turned my back and God. I lost my business because I wasn’t paying attention to it. I was 31 and broke. My wonderful wife should have dumped me, but she didn’t.”

Beth’s father, a Mayo Clinic doctor, Di Leo said, gave them money to move to Minnesota and begin life anew. Di Leo rededicated his life to God and learned from his mentor that gratitude had limited value unless one passed it onto someone else.

Cottage booked for next year • LODGE Continued from page 25 So, in 1999, Di Leo wrote and self-published his memoirs, “Did I Ever Thank You, Sister?” The couple then financed land and built the cottage on Lake George in the Paul Bunyan Forests in North Western Minnesota, just east of Itasca State Park. Over several years, they added electricity, built a grotto, installed a well and septic, and built a chapel.

“That was a feat,” Di Leo said. “Everything had to be carried down the hill to the site because we could not get a vehicle in there.

We did it with volunteers; I learned to pound nails.”

In the seventh year – with a camper on the grounds – Di Leo invited the Sisters of St. Francis to witness the work accomplished thus far. Two years later, Di Leo financed the construction of

the lodge and two years after that, its extension.

Currently, St. Francis Lodge holds 12 people, but Di Leo said guests experience greater peace and solitude when only four use it at one time. Future goals include buying and developing the north and south property, so even more people can enjoy the lodge. It’s solidly booked for the next 12 months, Di Leo said.

Mostly, Di Leo, now at age 60, wants people to understand that, no matter how grim circumstances may appear, they always have choices and that they can spend their lives achieving marvelous things, as long as they include God in those plans.

“It doesn’t have to be in a big way,” Di Leo said. “Just be a good husband or wife or be good at something that has meaning.”

How does this segue into a bridge deal? With difficulty! South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond ace. What ought to happen after that?

North responded with the Jacoby Forcing Raise, showing four or more hearts, game-forcing values and, usually, no singleton or void (because with a short suit, North would have made a splinter bid).

South rebid four hearts to indicate a minimum opening bid with no singleton or void.

At 999 tables out of 1,000, East would signal with his diamond nine under partner’s ace, starting a high-low with a doubleton. West would then cash the diamond king and give his partner a diamond ruff. Whatever East does next, though, South wins, draws trumps and claims 10 tricks: one spade, five hearts and four clubs.

However, East should realize that he does not need a ruff to gain a trump trick. So he should not advertise his doubleton. Instead, he should play his diamond four at trick one.

Then the spotlight falls on West.

If East has just played a singleton, it would probably be right to continue diamonds. But if South has four diamonds, he would have exactly 2-5-4-2 distribution, which is unlikely. Instead, West should think about shifting. And given the dummy, a spade looks better than a club.

Note that this is the only way to defeat the contract, the defenders then taking one spade, one heart and two diamonds.

ADVICE Early cancer detection could have saved friend Dear Abby: A childhood friend of mine died from cervical cancer.

“Katy” died because she didn’t go to her OB/GYN for annual Pap smears.

She was a wife and mother who was responsible in every other way. Katy simply couldn’t face a pelvic exam because throughout her childhood she had been molested by her father. I know it’s true, because her father molested me, too.

Katy’s doctor told her that had it been caught in the early stages, her cancer would have been curable. She hadn’t been to see her OB/GYN since her last child was born nine years before. Because of what her father did to her, she was unable to allow anyone other than her husband to touch her.

Abby, my friend fought to stay alive for her husband and children, whom she loved with all her heart. But in the end, cancer took her.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips PLEASE remind every woman and sexually active teenage girl about the importance of a yearly exam. Those who feel they can’t deal with the exams should force themselves to talk to their OB/ GYN and explain their fear. Braces for adults can achieve excellent results Dear Doctor K: I’m in my 40s and can finally afford to straighten my teeth. Am I too old for braces? What are my options?

Dear Reader: Adults have 32 teeth whose job is to break down the variety of foods in the human diet. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put an illustration of the different types of human teeth, and what we use them for.)

If someone is born with crooked teeth, childhood is the best time to get teeth straightened.

But adults can and often do opt for orthodontic treatment – with excellent results.

Braces can move the teeth in a variety of directions and treat many teeth at the same time.

Braces consist of brackets, usually made of stainless steel, which are cemented or bonded to tooth surfaces. Wires are threaded through the brackets to direct the force being applied to the teeth.

Elastic bands or springs may be attached to boost pressure. If it suits your style, you can opt for colored wires and elastics.

You can also choose tooth-colored ceramic or clear plastic brackets, which are less noticeable. These tend to cost more than metal braces. Ceramic brackets can break, and they may not be

Some orthodontists offer a lingual appliance. This device attaches to the back of the teeth so the brackets and wires don’t show when you smile. They can irritate the tongue and tend to be more expensive and require more care than traditional braces.

Another alternative to traditional braces is a series of removable custom-made, form-fitted trays made of clear plastic.

These devices, known as aligners, exert slight pressure on the teeth, gradually moving them. Every two weeks you switch to a new set of trays until the teeth reach their final position. This system may be a good choice if you need only minor corrections.

I once had a patient who had suffered one hard knock after

another as a child: no father, a mother getting in trouble with drugs, five younger siblings to help raise and no money. But she was determined to advance in the world. She completed high school and junior college, and was starting work as an administrative assistant.

The first time she came into my office, I noticed two things: how awkward and lacking in confidence she was, and her very crooked teeth.

A few years later, now in her early 30s, she told me she had taken out a loan so she could get braces. I wondered (to myself) if that was a wise decision, given the many other things she could have done with the money. I didn’t see her for two years.

Then one day she reappeared.

Gone was the awkward, shy young woman. “So good to see you again, doctor,” she said, with a smile full of straight teeth. It was then I noticed something I’d missed before: She was transformed.

Buzz over to sweeter flower Dr. Wallace: I’ve been dating Stephanie for almost a year. Most of the time we had good times, but the bad times came when she ignored me and flirted with other guys. Dr. Wallace: I’m a 13-year-old girl and live with my mother and a new stepfather.

My mother and father were divorced a year ago. I liked my real dad, but he wasn’t a good husband or a good father. The reason is that he is an alcoholic and he is out of control most of the time.

My mother is a teacher, but my dad didn’t have a job. My dad has moved to Mexico and lives with his mother, and he has not been in contact with me since he called me nine months ago to tell me goodbye.

My stepfather is

It takes patience and everyone’s constant effort to have open and honest communication for a stepfamily to blend. A common adjustment period for stepparent and child is two years, according to Phoenix clinical psychologist Dr. Linda Brewster.

The bonding process is gradual, so don’t try to hurry things along. Never feel things are your fault if misunderstandings arise.

Keep smiling and remember that your stepfather is also in a new role and could be having the same emotions that you are having.

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post One trillion dollars. That unfathomable number – the amount of student loan debt we’ve managed to rack up – hovers ominously over the economy.

And, unlike the housing crisis, there’s no option for foreclosure. Bankruptcy won’t make the bills stop coming.

How did we get here?

Andrew Rossi’s documentary “Ivory Tower” gets to the bottom of that while examining another hot topic: Is higher education, with its skyrocketing price tag, worth it? After all, as the movie shows, some parents are basically bankrolling little more than four years (or more) of keg stands and frat parties.

One of the most interesting discoveries is that it’s not just students who are in debt. In the spirit of competitiveness, colleges have had to up the ante. If one school has a rock-climbing wall, then the others need one, too. The same goes for bigger stadiums, better pools and cushier housing.

But in Rossi’s travels, from Columbia University to Bunker Hill Community College, Stanford to Spelman, he uncovers different approaches to higher education, where experimentation is working and kids are learning – without going bankrupt.

One of those places is Deep Springs, a two-year, all-male college on a California cattle ranch. Tuition is free, but students are expected to do manual labor between lectures about Nietzsche and Hegel. The documentary also spends quite a bit of time at Cooper Union in New York City, where, until recently, tuition was nil. But when the school tried to keep up with the Joneses (or at least the Harvards), and underwent a massive, costly remodeling, the board had to rethink the gratis approach. The decision was met with a months-long student sit-in in the president’s office.

“Ivory Tower” covers a lot of ground, and sometimes the focus feels diffuse.

There are so many tricky issues – from massive, open online courses and high administrative salaries (according to the movie, the University of Chicago’s president makes an astounding $3.3 million) to the Silicon Valley approach to education, which generally involves dropping out – that it might not have made sense to try to cover them all. And although some subjects are compelling – including a formerly homeless Cleveland kid attending Harvard on a full academic scholarship – they don’t always speak precisely to the point of the documentary.

Meanwhile, we don’t get much information about rankings, which is a major part of the equation. If all of these schools are pouring money into bells and whistles for the prestige of a top spot in U.S. News and World Report, it would be helpful to know just how those rankings are done.

In a democracy, education is paramount, and the student loan crisis is a problem on various fronts. Having so

many millennials in deep debt is bad for the economy, of course, but worse still is what they may not have gotten for their not-yet-earned cash: the knowledge and critical thinking skills to advance our society.

• “Ivory Tower” received three stars out of four. The film is rated PG-13 and contains obscenity and partying. It runs 90 minutes.
