Crest Hill police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said a woman in her early 20s contacted police in March to report Carlos Sandoval, 39, had sex with her when she was 7- and 8-years-old. The incidents occurred in 1998 and

1999 while Sandoval was married to a relative of the victim, Wilkerson said.

Sandoval moved to Whittier, California, after divorcing the victim’s relative, Wilkerson said.

Egg company brings chicken pasture to Mokena parking lot

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com MOKENA – When Jason Amundsen decided to raise chickens and produce eggs in a way counter to current industry practices, he came into it with no farming experience.

The Minnesota resident said he gained an interest in poultry food when he started reading about the sustainable agriculture movement.

When it came to raising chickens, the learning curve was steep for Amundsen, who worked previously as a grant writer.

But what motivated him to keep going was knowing the product is in high demand.

“We’re trying to rejuvenate a skill set of making pasture-based eggs that has been really lost,” he said.

Amundsen is now the owner of Minnesota-based Locally Laid Egg Co. and has been staging an event it terms “bringing the pasture to the parking lot” to several locations in the Chicago area to show people the benefits of pasture-raised eggs.

On Tuesday, the company made a pit stop at the parking lot of Berkot’s Super Foods in Mokena. Along with Tony’s Finer Foods and Windy City Produce, Berkot’s sells Locally Laid eggs.

The company set up a miniature pasture with several chickens in the parking lot of Berkot’s for shoppers to check out and to promote the Locally Laid Egg company message.

The eggs sold at Berkot’s and other local stores come from a farm in Middlebury, Indiana, which is about 130 miles away from Chicago.

The company makes its eggs by allowing chickens to forage and exercise, which results in a happy chicken and consequently a better egg, according to Locally Laid’s website. Amundsen said studies show chickens who are active this way produce eggs with less fat and cholesterol.

“This is a new yet old way of making food and we’re here to bring it back,” he said.

Trying to make eggs in a way that has not been agriculture industry practice since the 1940s and 1950s isn’t easy, Amundsen said.

One challenge is warding off predators, which is done

through electric fencing and red flashing lights that makes foxes and wolves feel like they’re being watched.

Skunks are unfortunately one intruder that are hard to deter because they’re omnivorous and nocturnal, he said.

Locally Laid also wanted to make an appearance in several Chicago area locations to showcase its environmental commitment and its pledge of 5 percent of profits to public school, libraries, the arts and the environment.

The company advocates locally produced food to reduce food miles and increase food freshness.

According to the Locally Laid website, grocery store items are estimated to travel between 1,500 to 2,500 miles before reaching kitchen counters.

Family barbershop – an East Side staple – will close Saturday after 69 years

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After more than five decades of cutting everything from flattops to fauxhawks to fades, the Ragusa boys are hanging up their scissors.

It’s Joe and Dominic’s last week at Joe Ragusa’s Barber Shop. The business, an East Side staple even as the neighborhood and hairstyle preferences changed drastically over the years, will be shutting its doors for the last time Saturday.

“You wouldn’t believe the changes,” Dominic Ragusa, 72, said.

A Ragusa has been cutting hair in this town for the last 69 years, ever since their father, Joe Ragusa Sr., opened his first shop in a shack at Collins and Jackson streets in 1945.

Nine years later, he bought a house at 412 E. Jackson St. from a customer moving to Minnesota, tore off the front porch and built his new barbershop in the front yard.

The family’s been there ever since.

“We’ve lived in this neighborhood our whole life,” Joe Ragusa, 75, said.

In its heyday, the shop ran five chairs, one for each Ragusa plus two other barbers. Mayors Maurice Berlinsky, Norman Keck and John Bourg were occasional clientele. People wore their hair short back then, and customers were plentiful and regular. And loyal.

John Gleason, 80, has been coming to Ragusa’s for more than 60 years.

“They’re just good barbers, good people and good friends of the family,” Gleason said.

Gleason said he’s stuck with the same haircut over the years: “just a trim.”

The business was once one of dozens of union barbershops across the city. Now the barber union is gone and only a handful of the old barbershops remain.

Clientele also has changed, from primarily white to predominantly Hispanic. Joe, at one time, also cut women’s hair until his daughter, Lora Booth, took over that part of the business when she started working with her grandfather, dad and uncle about 30 years ago.

But the biggest change has been in hairstyles. When the Ragusas started, short hair was the norm. All that changed in the mid-1960s.

Both men have been cutting hair for so long that they can handle just about any style, as long as the customer can explain what they want.

“If you don’t come up with the right words to explain what you want, the picture in

the barber’s head is not going to be right,” Joe said. “And bad things are going to happen.”

Many clients now use their cellphones to show what kind of cuts they want, Joe said.

Years ago, the most popular styles were crew cuts and flattops. Nowadays it’s the fade, which is basically shaved sides with a variety of styles on top, Joe said.

The barbershop also once offered straight-razor shaves.

“In 1985, we put the razors away,” Dominic said. A couple of older clients had contracted AIDS from blood transfusions. “We just didn’t want to take a chance with the blood,” he said.

On Saturday, the family

will celebrate after their last day with a pizza party.

Booth plans to continue cutting hair at Sparx Hair Studio in Shorewood.

“I’m going to miss my dad and uncle,” Booth said.

“We’ve been a great team together. It’s hard to split up.”

Dominic, who has a bad back, plans to retire.

“I’m not going to miss the work, but I’m going to miss the people,” Dominic said.

Joe, who had hip replacement surgery in April, will continue barbering at Hair Center Barber Salon, 825 Campus Drive, Joliet. Like his brother, it’s more about the people than the work.

“That’s why I want to stay with it,” Joe said.

New lineup set for Jefferson Street project

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Chipotle Mexican Grill, Potbelly Sandwich Shop and Mooyah burger restaurant, as well as an ALDI food store, will be featured at a new shopping center at Jefferson Street and Caterpillar Drive.

The latest lineup of restaurants no longer includes Panera Bread, which once was to go into the new development.

Construction crews recently began breaking ground at the site.

“Permits have been issued and they’re doing the foundation work on the ALDI’s and what I call the three-restaurant building,” said James Haller, the city’s director of community and economic de-

velopment.

Texas-based Mooyah serves burgers, fries, salads and milkshakes. The restaurant uses fresh ground beef and cuts its own fries daily.

Potbelly, headquartered out of Chicago, offers hot submarine sandwiches, soup, shakes, malts, smoothies and cookies. Restaurants at times feature live music.

Chipotle, out of Denver, specializes in gourmet burritos and tacos.

Previous plans had included a Panera Bread as one of the three restaurants at the site.

The developers, the father-and-son team of Jerry and Matt Cairo out of Chicago, also developed outlots in the Menards-Wal-Mart shopping center for the Applebee’s

son from the Menards-WalMart shopping center. The property is the former site of Joliet Dodge.

The new ALDI grocery will replace an existing store at 1820 N. Jefferson St. The Cairos also are working with ALDI to attract a new user for their existing Jefferson Street store, Matt Cairo told The Herald-News in an earlier interview.

Haller said he expected construction at the site would continue this year, with the center opening some time next year.

In other projects, property at Route 59 and Theodore Street has been purchased by a developer, although no tenants have yet been lined up for the site, Haller said.

Likewise, owners of property at Millenium Square, 2351 Plainfield Road, are continuing to market their site, Haller noted.

Denkers remembered as ‘asset to the community’

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com DWIGHT – The two victims who were slain in their home Saturday are being remembered for their contributions.

Donna Denker worked with the developmentally disabled and volunteered at church. Her daughter, Kelli, was an avid blood donor.

“I’ve known the family all my life,” Village President Jared Anderson said Tuesday. “They were an asset to the community. Donna was a good mom and a good grandma.”

At 4:38 a.m. Saturday a 911 call brought police to the Denkers’ house at 200 W. North St. where a male said he’d been shot. Police have not provided the age of the gunshot victim who was taken to Morris Hospital and later airlifted to a trauma center.

The bodies of Donna, 60,

and Kelli Denker, 30, were also discovered inside the house. Autopsies performed Monday showed the women were shot to death.

The victims have been cremated and will be buried in a private ceremony. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, where Donna Denker was an active participant according to her obituary.

A memorial fund for Kelli Denker’s son, Jack, has been established at the Dwight Bank Branch of Bank of Pontiac. Donna Denker is also survived by two other grandchildren, Cal and Jordan Schultz; her daughter, Julie Schultz; and her son, Mark Denker. Donna’s husband, John, died in 2012.

Suspect in Anne Gay disappearance may get plea deal

Borg faces 4 counts of arson

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man who allegedly blew up his own house after his girlfriend went missing last year will be offered a plea deal.

Defense attorney Ryan Kosztya told Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak on Tuesday that the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office will make an offer to his client, James J. Borg, next week.

Borg, 45, faces three counts of aggravated arson and one count of residential arson for the July 14 blast that leveled his rented home in the 100 block of Southeast Circle Drive in Joliet Township. He remains a suspect in the June 2013 disappearance of Anne Gay, according to Will County sheriff’s police.

Borg, who was hospitalized with severe burns for three months before his arrest, remains in the Will County jail’s medical unit. During Tuesday’s court appearance he wore bandages on his arms and medical gloves, but was not handcuffed. Unlike previous court appearances, Borg did not use a wheelchair.

Kosztya asked for Borg’s $750,000 bond to be reduced, but was unable to provide Bertani-Tomczak with a definitive answer whether Borg can receive physical therapy in jail.

“The doctor has said [Borg]

would benefit from physical therapy, but it’s not required,” Kosztya said. When the judge asked about scheduling Borg’s next court appearance in time for an answer, Kosztya told her about the potential plea.

The state’s attorney’s office would not comment about a potential plea deal.

Police and the state fire marshal have determined the gas line to the clothes dryer was cut and the valve was left open when Borg’s rented home went up in flames. No one besides Borg was at the home, but four people were inside the house next door.

Borg reportedly appeared despondent to witnesses when he was visited hours earlier over the disappearance of Gay, 52.

Gay failed to show up for her shifts at Louis’ Restaurant on June 10, 2013 and co-workers asked police to check on her. Gay’s daughter, Kimberly Dore, said after the police left Borg called her to say he hadn’t seen her mother for a week.

Dore filed a missing persons report. During the year Borg and Gay lived together police were called for 13 domestic disputes, the last one hours before Gay made her last known phone calls to friends.

Borg has a pending sentencing after being found guilty of threatening to kill a neighbor and reckless driving during an incident in September 2012.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Three Joliet teens allegedly staged a robbery to steal sneakers from a shoe collector Monday.

Lt. Mike Rompa said police were called at 8:51 p.m. to the parking lot of CVS Pharmacy, 1725 W. Boughton Road, where a 15-year-old boy and Jaime A. Muniz, 18, had met to trade Air Jordans.

“They connected through a social media website, which

is dedicated to the sale and trading of shoes,” Rompa said.

When Muniz and the victim met, they were confronted by Marshall K. Williams, 18, and Jarry N. Hall, 19, who tackled the 15-year-old boy and took two pairs of shoes, Rompa said. Williams and Hall then went through Muniz’s pockets for cash and ran away.

Rompa said Muniz drove away and flagged down a police officer while claiming to be a robbery victim. Police also found the victim’s $100 pair of white and gold Air Jordans and another $50 pair of white Nikes nearby while a canine found Williams hiding

in a yard a few blocks away, Rompa said.

After Hall was also taken into custody, police discovered the pair had ridden from Joliet with Muniz and been dropped off around the corner from the pharmacy, Rompa said.

“The plot was for Hall and Williams to rob the victim and give the perception of robbing Muniz simultaneously,” Rompa said.

Muniz, of the 1100 block of Edgerton Drive, Hall, of the 800 block of Cardinal Lane, and Williams, of the 1200 block of Fairview Avenue, were arrested on charges of robbery and booked into the Will County jail.

PLAINFIELD – The village board this week voted 6-1 to approve a zoning amendment that, with restrictions, would allow a medical marijuana dispensary or cultivation center to operate in Plainfield.

“Our chances of getting one are very slim,” Trustee Jim Racich said. “But we need to be ready.”

The zoning amendment approved Monday addresses the state’s Compassionate Use of Medicinal Cannabis Pilot Program Act, passed on Aug. 1.

The act allows medicinal use of marijuana and regulates the growing and selling of the drug. Only one cultivation center per Illinois State Police district, and just 60 dispensaries would be allowed in the state.

The amendment allows prospective growers or distributors to apply for permits

to operate in Plainfield.

The Plan Commission voted 6-1 to recommend the amendment last week. Commissioners and staff discussed at that meeting how the village would have little control over the facilities if they did come in.

Also, the federal government still classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, alongside heroin, LSD and ecstasy.

Trustee Garrett Peck said that’s why he voted against it.

“We’re creating zoning for something that’s illegal, according to the DEA and federal government,” Peck said, adding that in the future a conservative president could start enforcing federal law on a future dispensary or cultivation center.

A cultivation center must be at least 2,500 feet away from any existing school, day care center, group home or residential zoned property.

A: The best“front-line”defense against lawsuits is adequate liability insurance coverage. Often, the cost of expanding liability coverage is inexpensive, from a dollar-for-dollar benefit standpoint.

Umbrella coverage, or other insurance coverage, is necessary in order to provide a source for defending against all lawsuits, especially those that may have little or no merit.

Redundancy does not exist in the area of asset protection planning, so we often recommend to clients, especially those who own investment properties, that they consider transferring their real estate to a Limited Liability Company

(LLC). Single-member LLCs are treated as“sole proprietorships”from a tax standpoint, yet provide considerable protection from lawsuit. Multimember LLCs are generally taxed as a partnership, permitting simpler passthrough taxation to the owners, while at the same time providing the owners with the liability protection of a corporation.

LLCs provide, in the event of a lawsuit, a“firewall”between the business assets held in the LLC, and the owner’s individual, non-business assets.

While in the past the use of an LLC for each separate investment property was often cost prohibitive, Illinois recently amended the Limited Liability Company Act to permit the Series LLC. Series LLCs provide the benefit of multiple LLC protection, with reduced filing and fees with the State of Illinois. adno=0264920

Once again I would like to address the issue of those late night T.V. ads and newspaper inserts which urge you to “avoid probate and get a living trust”. Too many of my clients in the past few months have come to me with a “Living Trust” that another lawyer prepared for them.

My clients were under the assumption that these “living trusts” were going to shelter their assets now if one of them had to go to a nursing home. My clients tell me the ads promoting these living trust seminars implied that their assets would be protected if dad had to go to a nursing home. My clients tell me that the attorney at these seminars insisted that the ‘living trust’ would protect their assets if dad had to go to a nursing home.

Well, now dad has to go to a nursing home.

My clients paid over $3,700.00 for their living trust and the cruel reality is that their “living trust” protects NOTHING!!

Not only will their “living trust” not protect their assets but the trust was never funded.

Their attorney never took the time to help them “fund” or put their assets into their trust.

In this situation my partner, Jennifer Lynch, and I were able to take some steps to help this couple preserve their assets. The first step taken was to dissolve the “living trust”.

I get very angry when people are enticed into getting a “living trust” when they do not need one. Just because your sister and her husband have a “living trust” does not mean that you need one, too.

There are, however, situations

where a “living trust” or intervivos trust (a trust between living persons) is needed. They are as follows: 1. If your assets are at, or near $3 million, you may need a living trust.

2. If you are entering into a second (or more) marriage, you may need a “living trust”.

3. If you own real estate in another state, you may need a living trust.

As mentioned in previous articles, a “living trust” will not necessarily limit legal fees upon your death. If the kids are going to fight over dad’s estate, it does not matter whether you have a trust or a will. They are going to run up legal expenses. Also, an uncontested probate matter is usually less expensive than creating and funding a living trust. In Illinois lawyers can only bill their hours of work; they cannot bill a percentage of the estate. As for us keeping things confidential, the only people I have ever seen (other than lawyers) take the time to fully read a probate case are dedicated genealogists.

Please, dear Reader, do not be stampeded, bombarded or enticed into having a “living trust” prepared when you do not need one.

Go to your regular lawyer the one you have known, or know of, for a long time to get legal advice. Out of town or county attorneys who ask you to come to their seminars are only trying to do one thing: Their “product”, a “living trust”.

Please follow this legal advice regarding “living trusts”.

Q. My workers’ compensation injuries won’t allow me to return to my old job. What happens to someone like me?

There is a big difference between what will happen to you as an Illinois worker, and other states like Indiana, where if your injured, you’re are simply thrown to the wolves and left to fend for yourself. In Illinois our laws require the employer to provide something called vocational rehabilitation, which essentially means what it says. Many people in the work force have only worked a couple of jobs, or have only worked the same kind of job for multiple employers. If they can’t go back to this work, without help they can be in deep trouble.

While vocational rehabilitation sounds and should be great, frequently people without good reading and writing skills are forced to spend 40 hours a week looking for work, which is an unfamiliar activity. If the counselor claims lack of cooperation, maintenance is cut off. So the employee must be diligent in making the number of potential employer contacts requested, and, something hard for many, to document on paper everything he/she does.

Once a job is landed, the employee is entitled to a wage differential award, being 2/3rds of the difference between what he would make at his old job and his earnings in the new job, assuming it is suitable employment. One other issue is who gets to pick the certified rehabilitation counselor, the employer or the employee, which is something the employee should discuss with his attorney. adno=0264923

Q: I fell at the store. Can I sue?

A: It’s not a matter of can you sue, but should you sue.

Anyone has the ability to sue for perceived injuries. However, this does not guarantee a recovery, nor does it mean it is the economically wise thing to do. Often a store will offer to pay for an emergency room bill and ambulance bill if the injury occurred on its property. And, if there are no injuries, this may be sufficient. But what if the store doesn’t pay to check you out after a fall?

First, what caused you to fall? If it was water carried into the building because of rain, it may be considered natural accumulation and not the fault of the store owner; if it was a piece of fruit that just fell, the store may not have had proper notice; if you tripped over an item on the floor, did the store know the item was there (or should it have known)? These types of questions help determine if the store owner has any responsibility or duty to you as to the cause of the fall. Frequently the issue is that of notice. Did the store have notice, or should have known, of the condition that caused your fall? If they did not, they may not be responsible. If they knew or should have known, but did nothing, they may be responsible. Additionally, if the store did something to cause the condition they may have a duty to you as well.

Second, were you injured? If you had a small bruise that healed in a week, the damages will be too small to justify the cost of litigation. If you were significantly injured or the injury will be permanent, the damages may justify pursuing the matter.

Finally, keep in mind that there is a tendency in juries to place some of the blame on the person who fell. After all, the reasoning goes, that person was in the best position to avoid whatever caused the fall in the first place, right?

Therefore, when trying to decide if the fall is worth pursuing, look at what caused you to fall. If it was something not created by a natural condition or it was there for a period of time, the store may be on constructive notice and have responsibility. If you are experiencing pain and/or have significant treatment then the costs of litigation may be justified. Finally, keep in mind that the average jury will look at your conduct and role in the fall in deciding if you contributed to it. If you are unsure, consult with a lawyer. He/ she will help you through the analysis and help you decide if you have a case worth pursuing. After all, if you were hurt due to the negligence of another, they should compensate you. adno=0264921

There are people called certified vocational rehabilitation counselors (CRC’s) who will meet with the injured worker, and optimally will attempt to do what is best for the injured worker. This could involve retraining and placement, or simply placement. While the employee is in vocational rehabilitation, he/she will receive maintenance, which is the same dollar amount as temporary total disability, being 2/3rds of the average wage for the year before the accident. It is tax free, but still there is a significant financial loss to the employee to be on either workers’ compensation or maintenance.

Channahon hires new village administrator

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The village board this week hired a new village administrator and other top officials.

Thomas Durkin, now village administrator in Crete, will replace Joe Pena, who retired from the same position in Channahon in May. Durkin’s salary will be $112,000 plus $300 a month in vehicle allowance. He will begin the position July 28, and his contract will expire on the expiration of the term of the current village president in 2015.

Durkin will not be required to live in the village at this time. According to his employment agreement, he may be required to move to Channahon after working in the position for four years.

“He comes from a very

well-rounded background,” Channahon trustee Sam Greco said Tuesday. “He has economic development experience, he’s done contract negotiations, and he was by far the best candidate ... I’m excited. I think we’re assembling a great team. We’ve got the start of something great.”

Current Director of Community Development, Mike McMahon, is leaving July 3, and the village board approved replacing him with Mike Petrick, who now works for the village as its information technology geographic information system coordinator.

According to Village President Joe Cook, Petrick began as an intern with the village when he was only 17 years old and has been a dependable and highly competent staff member.

The title of the position has changed with Petrick’s ap-

pointment. He will be director of community development and information systems.

Petrick will be responsible for planning, organizing and directing the village’s zoning, building and code enforcement programs, in addition to developing and maintaining its information systems and technology.

“We had the right person to do the job right here,” Cook said Tuesday, “and he’s ready to take on the new position.

He’s from Channahon, he lives in Channahon and he’s done some wonderful work for us.”

Petrick’s starting salary is $79,000.

The third position appointed was a new finance director to replace Bob Guess, who is retiring. Erik Bush, formerly business manager at McClain County Unit 5 School District and more recently village administrator of Hampshire,

will assume the position next week.

“Erik has been a village administrator, a county finance officer for Peoria County and the finance director at a large school district,” Cook said.

“He’s also a veteran of the U.S. Navy.”

Cook said the finances of Channahon are solid and stable and that Bush should add to its strength.

“I know he will enhance what we have now,” Cook said, “in technology, investments and money management.”

Cook acknowledged it was unusual to have so many senior staff officials to replace at one time. Pena retired, Guess took early retirement and McMahon resigned to look for employment in a different location.

“These are high quality individuals taking on these roles,” Cook said. “It’s a very

dynamic team that’s going to enhance our existing team. I think our executive staff is going to be the envy of many.”

“Our argument is when the state allowed him to plead guilty [to abuse] in exchange for the [assault] being dismissed, double jeopardy attached,” Jeff Tomczak, an attorney handling Ventsias’ appeal, said.

Ventsias is currently on home confinement while his appeal is being heard, Tomczak said.

Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Colleen Griffin argued Ventsias never entered a plea to the sexual assault charge “thus jeopardy never attached.”

“Jeopardy would only attach to a count on which there was a valid plea, not to one which was dismissed pursuant to that plea,” Griffin wrote in her appellate brief.

The Illinois Appellate Court will decide if a Braidwood man’s Constitutional right against “double jeopardy” was violated when he faced trial for the same sex crime twice.

Peter A. Ventsias, 57, will appear in state appellate court in Ottawa on Wednesday for arguments on whether he should be released from home confinement or sent to prison.

Ventsias, was charged eight years ago with fondling an 8-year-old girl in August 2005. In December 2007, Ventsias was found guilty of predatory criminal sexual assault, but not guilty of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in a jury trial. He was

sentenced to 11 years in prison.

The appellate court overturned that verdict in 2009 and ordered a new trial for Ventsias. But before that happened in January 2012, he agreed to let prosecutors re-charge him with aggravated criminal sexual abuse and entered a blind guilty plea.

Before Ventsias was sentenced, the plea was vacated

by Will County Judge Richard Schoenstedt when prosecutors filed a motion to “update the charge,” according to Ventsias’ appellate brief.

“As a result of the vacation of the defendant’s plea, the [dismissal] of the predatory criminal sexual assault charge was vacated and the matter proceeded to trial on that charge,” the brief stated. Ventsias was found

Carol W. Freitag (nee Petersen), age 74, of Tinley Park, and formerly a long time resident of Matteson-Homewood, passed away Sunday June 15, 2014.

Carol was a longtime dental hygienist where she worked side by side with her husband, Dr. Henry at their dental office. She was a graduate of Northwestern University Class of 1959. After graduating, Carol stayed very dedicated to Northwestern and was Past President of the Northwestern Dental Alumni Association. She was a member of the John Evans Society, the G.V. Black District Dental Society, the Illinois Hygienists Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Homewood Historical Society.

Carol was a dear friend to many and will be deeply missed by all know knew her.

Survived by her husband of 49 years, Raymond A. Prodehl; three daughters, Lynda (Bob “Bumper”) Everton, Beckie (Bob) Tomlinson, Sandie (Jim) Ebersohl; and a son, Bill Price; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also survived by close friends, several nieces and nephews.

Helen is survived by her son, Daniel (Susan); one sister, Margaret Videtich of Crest Hill; one sisterin-law, Josephine Luman of Elburn, IL; numerous nieces and nephews including one special niece, Joyce Cabay of Joliet.

Preceded in death by her parents; her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Raymond A. Sameck in 2011; and two sisters, Dorothy Frank and Frances Walczak.

During her years in the work force before she married, Helen was employed in the secretarial field.

Helen was a member of the St. Genevieve Society #108 of the KSKJ and a lifetime parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet. She was a devout Catholic.

STONE PARK – A convent of nuns in suburban Chicago has filed a lawsuit against a neighbor, a strip club they say plays throbbing music while the nuns try to pray.

The Sisters of St. Charles named Club Allure Chicago and the village of Stone Park in their lawsuit filed Friday in Cook County Circuit Court. They claim the club violates Illinois zoning laws,

which require a 1,000-foot buffer between adult entertainment facilities and places of worship.

The sisters’ property in Melrose Park includes three chapels. The strip club opened in the neighboring village of Stone Park in September.

Danville man gets life term for triple homicide

DANVILLE – A Danville man was sentenced to life in prison for an eastern Illinois triple killing, and the judge lambasted his eye rolls, yawns and occasional laughter while being addressed by the victims’ relatives.

Vermilion County Circuit Judge Nancy Fahey told Jerome Harris, 29, during his court hearing Monday that his conduct toward the victims’ families reflected his lack of remorse for the 2007 shooting deaths of three people, the Champaign News-Gazette reported.

“There is absolutely no excuse,” Fahey told Harris, referring to the Danville man’s killings of 30-yearold Rodney Pepper of Chicago,

and 21-year-old Ta’Breyon McCullough and 19-year-old Madisen Leverenz, both of Danville. “It is absolutely despicable, and the sentences are so appropriate.”

When given the opportunity to speak before hearing his sentence, Harris was unapologetic.

Jurors deliberated three hours in April before convicting Harris, who faced a mandatory life sentence. He already was serving 25 years in state prison for drug-related crimes.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Tornadoes flatten rural Nebraska town; 2 dead PILGER, Neb. – As two giant tornadoes bore down on this tiny farming town in northeast Nebraska, Trey Wisniewski heard the storm sirens, glanced out at the blackening sky and rushed with his wife into their basement.

“My wife was holding our animals, and I was holding on to my wife. We could feel the suction try to pull us out of there,” he said Tuesday.

Suddenly, their house was gone, leaving them to dodge debris that rained down upon them.

And then, the storm that hit so suddenly Monday afternoon was gone, allowing them to emerge and see what was left of the 350-person farming town of Pilger.

They found that much of the community was gone and two people had died. U.S. seizes Benghazi suspect in deadly 2012 Libya attack

BALDOR and NANCY BENAC The Associated Press WASHINGTON – U.S. special forces seized a “key leader” of the deadly Benghazi, Libya, attack and he is on his way to face trial in the U.S. for the fiery assault that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, the Obama administration announced Tuesday. It was the first breakthrough in the sudden overseas violence in 2012 that has become a festering political sore at home.

President Barack Obama said the capture Sunday of Ahmed Abu Khattala sends a clear message to the world that “when Americans are attacked, no matter how long it takes, we will find those responsible and we will bring them to justice.”

“We will find you,” Obama declared.

As recently as last August, though, Abu Khattala told The Associated Press that he was not in hiding nor had he been questioned by Libyan authorities about the attack at the diplomatic compound.

He denied involvement and said that he had abandoned the militia. Administration officials said Tuesday that despite his media interviews, he “evaded capture” until the weekend when military special forces, including members of the Army’s elite Delta Force, nabbed him.

Whatever the path to his capture, he was headed for the United States to face what Obama called “the full weight of the American justice system.” Obama called the Libyan an “alleged key leader” of the attack.

U.S. officials said Abu Khattala was being held on the Navy amphibious transport dock ship USS New York, which was in the Mediterranean Sea. The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity because they

The Libyan was the commander of a militant group called the Abu Obaida bin Jarrah Brigade and is accused of being a senior leader of the Benghazi branch of Ansar al-Shariah in Libya, which the U.S. has designated a terror group.

On Capitol Hill, Republicans urged the administration to get as much intelligence out of Abu Khattala as possible before anyone reads him his rights to remain silent, supplies him with a lawyer and prepares him for trial in a U.S. courtroom. In fact, Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, top Republican on the Intelligence Committee, said interrogation of the Libyan already was underway and “we hope to find out some positive things.”

Abu Khattala is charged with terror-related crimes in U.S. District Court in Washington and will be tried like a civilian, the administration said. The Obama administration policy is to treat terror suspects as criminals when possible and not send them to the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, like

hundreds of terror suspects captured during the administration of President George W. Bush.

Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said the U.S. should skip the legal niceties and focus on interrogation.

“The most valuable thing we can get from this terrorist is information about who else was involved in this,” McConnell told reporters.

“We’ll be watching closely to see how much information they glean from him and how they’re handling it.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., added: “We should have some quality time with this guy – weeks and months.

Don’t torture him; have some quality time with him.”

Justice Department spokesman Marc Raimondi declined to comment on whether Abu Khatalla had been read his “Miranda rights” or when that might happen.

“As a general rule, the government will always seek to elicit all actionable intelligence and information we can from terrorist suspects in our custody,” Raimondi said in an email.

Explosion rocks World Cup viewing venue in Nigeria

By ADAMU ADAMU The Associated Press DAMATURU, Nigeria – A suicide bomber detonated a tricycle taxi packed with explosives at an outdoor World Cup viewing center in a northeast Nigerian city Tuesday night, and witnesses said several people were killed.

Hospital workers said the death likely will rise with 15 people critically wounded and casualties still coming in to the main hospital at Damaturu, capital of Yobe state.

Police Assistant Superintendent Nathan Cheghan confirmed the explosion but said rescue workers were being careful for fear of secondary explosions. Islamic extremists of the Boko Haram group frequently time secondary explosions to kill people who rush to the scene of a bomb blast.

Cheghan said he had no casualty figures.

There was no immediate claim for the blast witnesses were blaming on Boko Haram fighters who have targeted football viewing centers and sports bars in the past. Two explosions in recent weeks killed at least 40 people in two northern cities.

Witnesses said the tricycle taxi was driven into the outdoor area soon after the Brazil-Mexico match started Tuesday night. All spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

One hospital worker said he saw at least seven bodies.

Another said 15 casualties were in intensive care. Both asked that their names not be published because they are not authorized to speak to reporters.

Nigeria’s military has promised increased security but appears incapable of halting a stream of attacks by extremists holding more than 250 schoolgirls hostage.

The kidnapping of the girls two months ago and failure of Nigeria’s military and government to rescue them has roused international concern.

The United States is searching for the girls with drones and has sent experts along with Britain and France to help in counter-terrorism tactics and hostage negotiation.

Boko Haram’s leader Abubakar Shekau has threatened to sell the girls into slavery unless the government agrees to exchange them for detained extremists, but President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will not exchange prisoners. Nigeria’s military has said it knows where the girls are but that any military campaign could get them killed.

Boko Haram wants to enforce an Islamic state in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer with a population almost equally divided between Christians and Muslims.

BAGHDAD – Nearly four dozen Sunni detainees were gunned down at a jail north of Baghdad, a car bomb struck a Shiite neighborhood of the capital and four young Sunnis were found slain – ominous signs that open warfare between the two main Muslim sects has returned to Iraq.

The killings late Monday and Tuesday following the capture by Sunni insurgents of a large swath of the country stretching to Syria were the first hints of the beginnings of a return to sectarian bloodletting that nearly tore the country apart in 2006 and 2007.

During the United States’ eight-year presence in Iraq, American forces acted as a buffer between the two Islamic sects, though with limited success. The U.S. military withdrew at the end of 2011, but it is now being pulled back in – so far committing just under 300

troops, with a limited mission of securing U.S. assets as President Barack Obama nears a decision on an array of options for combating the Islamic militants.

In the latest sect-on-sect violence, at least 44 Sunni detainees were slaughtered by gun shots to the head and chest by pro-government Shiite militiamen after Sunni insurgents tried to storm the jail near Baqouba, northeast of Baghdad, police said.

The Iraqi military gave a different account and put the death toll at 52, insisting the Sunni inmates were killed by mortar shells in the attack late Monday on the facility.

In Baghdad, meanwhile, the bullet-riddled bodies of four men in their late 20s or early 30s, presumably Sunnis, were found Tuesday at different locations in the Shiite neighborhood of Benouk, according to police and morgue officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were

Keep motorcycle safety in mind Last weekend’s tragic motorcycle crash that resulted in the death of a Mokena man offers a sad reminder of the need to be extra cautious on area roadways.

Matthew Domzal, 35, of Mokena lost control of his motorcycle while riding with a group on Route 6 just east of Brisbin Road in Morris.

Domzal was riding toward the back of the group when, for an unknown reason, his motorcycle went down on the pavement. Domzal was not wearing a helmet.

During the summer months, motorcyclists abound on area roadways.

Motorcyclists and those who share the road with motorcyclists must take extreme caution on the roads.

In addition to motorcyclists knowing and practicing the rules of the road, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation lists on its website five key messages for riders: • Get trained and licensed; • Wear protective gear – all the gear, all the time – including a helmet manufactured to the standards set by the department of transportation; • Ride unimpaired by alcohol or other drugs; • Ride within your own skill limits; • Be a lifelong learner by taking refresher rider courses.

Of course, all the helmets and safety classes in the world will not protect a motorcyclist from reckless automobile drivers. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has these tips for automobile drivers regarding motorcycles: • Take an extra moment to look for motorcycles, whether you’re changing lanes or turning at intersections; • Allow more following distance for motorcycles; • Understand that motorcyclists adjust lane position for a purpose, not to be reckless or show off or to allow you to share the lane with them; • Don’t expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way.

With a common-sense approach to motorcycle safety for riders and automobile drivers, we, hopefully, can prevent any further tragic accidents.

Illinois’ culture of corruption resumes SPRINGFIELD – Well, another state legislator is heading to prison.

You won’t hear much outrage in Springfield.

Or dismay for that matter.

In the grand scheme of things, the conviction of state Rep. Derrick Smith, D-Chicago, on bribery charges is picayune.

You’ll hear it whispered around the statehouse: “He ‘only’ took $7,000.”

That’s right. He took seven grand in exchange for writing a letter in support of a business receiving a state grant.

Another legislator, LaShawn Ford, D-Chicago, is facing bank fraud charges. And last year, former state Rep. Connie Howard pleaded out on a felony charge that she was siphoning money that was supposed to go for college scholarships. Instead, she spent it on herself.

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder Let’s face it, prison has become the repository for many Illinois pols once their time in “public service” is up.

Some embraced the penitentiary with panache.

Former Gov. Otto Kerner showed up at the prison gate in a limousine and wearing a tuxedo.

Gov. Dan Walker reported to prison wearing his Annapolis ring.

That didn’t sit too well with the warden, a West Pointer.

Gov. George Ryan was chauffeured to the Big House by another governor – James R. Thompson.

And Rod Blagojevich was mugging for the cameras at a burger joint moments before entering the

slammer.

Illinoisans have become jaded to criminality among those we elect.

A few years back, some Springfield wag printed up bumper stickers that said, “My Governor is a Bigger Crook than Your Governor.”

This kind of cynicism has metastases through the electorate, leaving political tumors of apathy, inevitability and suspicion.

There is no greater exploiter of this political cynicism than House Speaker Mike Madigan.

Despite Smith’s indictment, Madigan threw his support behind his re-election this year.

Madigan’s spokesman told the Chicago Tribune that the speaker supports Democratic incumbents and believes in “innocent until proven guilty.”

UGLY STUMP To the Editor: I would like to know when the city of Joliet is going to take care of its error of the Ash trees? The city did part of our subdivision a year ago by cutting them down. Now we have ugly stumps that the city is responsible for removing.

The problem started when the city was supposed to put in 20 percent Ash trees and 80 percent other trees, but they put in the opposite – 80 percent ash and 20 percent other trees.

We paid for part of the trees when we had our house built 11 years ago in the Highland Subdivision off Gougar Road.

Will Illinoisans continue to tolerate the intolerable?

Now they expect us to pay part again for their mistake.

I think this is wrong.

Please have someone look into this and take care of the problem.

A stroke, or brain attack, is the interruption of blood flow to any part of the brain. Without blood circulation and the oxygen it provides, brain cells begin to die and damage becomes worse with each passing second.

Education of the public is imperative. The acronym FAST makes the signals of a stroke simple to recall and remember in a crisis: F: Face weakness, drooping or crookedness, A: Arm weakness or tingling, S: Speech that is slurred or drunk sounding T: Time, quickly getting medical treatment.

“We want the general public and emergency personnel to understand these general symptoms and help that person get quick medical treatment,” says Dr. Aamir Badruddin of Presence St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Joliet.

“Time is of the essence when treating a stroke,” he explained.

“The clot-busting drug tPa must be administered to a stroke patient with 4.5 hours after the onset of symptoms. Patients sometimes don’t take the symptoms seriously or do not recognize them as the onset of a

stroke. The sooner the medication is administered the better the chances for a full recovery.”

Stroke is the number one cause of disability in this country, Badruddin says. If not treated properly and promptly, it can result in permanent weakness in the extremities, loss of mobility and loss of independence.

Treatment of stroke has changed dramatically in the last few years.

“We now have a better understanding of the different types of strokes. The diagnostic tools have improved significantly,” he explains. “We also now have the technology to mechanically remove the blood clot from the vein. Up until six years ago, we did not have the ability to do these procedures.”

5 new members inducted to Joliet Hall of Fame

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame hadn’t inducted any new members since 2010, but the span between the sixth and seventh classes of honorees was barely noticed Tuesday at Silver Cross Field.

That’s because the newest entrants to the exclusive group is as impressive as any of the previous groups that have entered the hall since its founding in 2003.

The five inductees, which pushes membership in the hall to 50 members, featured a wide spectrum of the best the Joliet area has to offer.

From the late Ken Parker of Joliet Township and Joliet Junior College to Providence Catholic’s Matt Senffner to Joliet Catholic’s Terry Gannon to Morris’ Ed Brady to Joliet Township alum Brent Wadsworth; this year’s class indeed has accomplished a great deal during their careers.

With the introduction of the latest class, it also was announced their accomplishments will receive better recognition with the move of the hall of fame from Silver Cross Field to the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

One of the most surprised new members was Wadsworth, who has been widely honored as one of the premiere golf course designers in the country.

Although his Wadsworth Golf Construction Company has designed over 800 courses and his Golf Charities Foundation has been a wonderful benefactor, Wadsworth still didn’t believe he should be honored when originally told of the award.

“This is something that I never expected and when I was asked to be inducted I thought this wasn’t for me,” Wadsworth said. “But on the other hand, I have two valuable things in my life that I cherish. One of them is the city of Joliet and the other one is golf, and they’re both things of quality. I feel like this is the culmination of many years in the game.

“They call this the City of Champions for good reason and one of those is for the

Brady, the standout football player at Morris and the University of Illinois before beginning a 12-year career in the NFL, was excited that an athlete like himself from his hometown was able to be included with such a prestigious group.

“It’s an honor for me to be a part of this,” Brady said.

“I thought that I was forgotten about since I was just a little guy from Morris. But it’s something to be included with all of the people that I’ve seen on the walls here and the guys who were going in this year. It’s kind of a humbling experience, and I’m having a lot of fun, but [Tuesday night] is going by so fast.

“Even though I’ve moved around, my roots are still in Morris, Illinois and this area.

When I come back here, I become the same hometown type of guy. With the news building and the way they’re setting it up, it’s going to be

something for everyone to come there and see all the types of athletes and read the plaques about all of these people in the hall of fame.”

Gannon, the outstanding national broadcaster, who followed up a great basketball career at Joliet Catholic by playing on a national championship team at North Carolina State, said being a part of something special in his hometown is an honor he really appreciates.

“This is a city that has produced so many great athletes and successful people in sports,” Gannon said. “All that I ever wanted to be was almost as good as some of the guys who played for my dad, and who I idolized. To think that I’m coming back years to be honored in the hall of fame for this place is not only a thrill, but it makes me shake my head.

“Because I grew up learning from the guys who came before me, it helped pave the

way for every opportunity that I got and some that I didn’t expect to get. I travel the country in sports and I have not found an area that’s more equipped to produce athletes who can compete like Joliet because of the coaches here and just the makeup of the place.”

Senffner, who retired as the state’s winningest football coach after starting the Celtics program 40 years earlier and oversaw the Providence athletic program for much of his career, said entry into this hall of fame may be the most special of all for the oft-honored coach, “This is probably the most meaningful honor that I’ve had since it is my hometown,” Senffner said. “I was born and raised in the Joliet area and when you talk about the schools from this area, sports here are really big.

Because of the delay in induction classes, the honor was bestowed upon Parker after his death last September. Despite that, his family was thrilled to participate in an event in which the longtime fixture in athletics at JT and JJC was recognized along with other greats from the area.

“We feel honored that my dad was inducted,” said his son, Kent Parker. “It’s appropriate when you look at all of the great personalities that are on the walls here. When we had his wake, one of the things that surprised us was that there were 500 people there. We knew that many people felt a real impact from him, but there were many we didn’t know about.

“And it was nice to have him included with a coach who won 300 games, a guy that you hear broadcasting on TV, a football player and a golf course designer. And as much as anything, our whole family was able to come back here to be a part of this ceremony.”

But that early excitement proved to be one of the few highlights of the evening for the Slammers after the CornBelters scored runs in each of the next three frames.

A four-run outburst by Normal in the seventh broke things open by putting the visitors up, 13-5, and eventual won the game, 14-6.

The squads meet again Wednesday morning at 10:05 a.m.

In the second inning, Joliet (12-16) got back-to-back home runs from Grant DeBruin and Adam Giacalone to pull to within 3-2. Tyler Roberts would even things up with a two-out double to bring in Jose Garcia, and Max Casper then smacked a two-run home run.

But Normal (13-14) got a run back in the third and

With Cutler as the primary signal-caller, the Bears averaged 26.8 points, which would have ranked them eighth.

Marc Trestman expects Cutler to take another step forward.

“Jay is incredibly smart footballwise,” Trestman said.

“His ability to draw from all

the different experiences he’s had both in the physical aspects of running these plays and then the mental aspects of having to read them out and find the right guy goes into his growth in the second year, plus he’s working with the same people, which is a big advantage.”

Another question to be answered is whether or not Cutler is correct when he says “talentwise, it’s hard to top our offensive line.”

Actually, only Matt Slauson graded out extremely well individually over the course of the 2013 season.

The sum of Slauson, Jermon Bushrod, Roberto Garza, Kyle Long, Jordan Mills and Eben Britton was far more impressive than any of their individual performances.

And the fact that they play Britton so much as a sixth offensive linemen and usually block four with six and five with seven or even eight now is on tape over the course of an entire season and it will be interesting to see how opponents react.

The first day of the Bears’ minicamp had a decidedly offensive feel to it as offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer was made available to the media after practice and quarterback Jay Cutler spoke for the first time since signing his megabucks freeagent contract in January.

Appropriate, I guess, as media and Bears fans everywhere continue to advance the theory that the Bears suddenly are an offensive juggernaut with nothing to worry about on that side of the ball.

Cutler seems ready to at least sip the Kool-Aid. “We did OK last year, for the first year. We have the same guys we had last year, which is always good,” Cutler said. “Talentwise, it’s hard to top our O-line and some of the guys we have on the outside and Matt Forte, who is hugely underrated.

Talentwise and being in the system two years and the way the guys work, all that adds up.”

Kromer is cautious about pumping up his offense too much, but certainly pleased with what he’s seeing so far.

“As an overall offense, I feel like the knowledge of what we’re trying to get done is getting greater and greater. That’s what’s big in the offseason. We’re in shorts. We don’t have full pads on, the full blocking, the full tackling, all the things that make football, football can’t happen in these periods.”

Marlins rally to defeat Cubs

By STEVEN WINE The Associated Press MIAMI – Garrett Jones hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning Tuesday night, and the Miami Marlins rallied to beat the Cubs, 6-5.

Adeiny Hechavarria started the Marlins’ seventh with a bunt single for his fourth hit. Rafael Furcal had a twoout, two-run single in the fourth for his first RBIs since 2012.

Hard-luck Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija allowed three runs, two earned, in six innings but again was denied a victory. The Cubs are 4-11 when he starts even though his ERA is 2.78.

Luis Valbuena’s RBI double in the seventh gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead and left Samardzija in line for only his third win. But Miami rallied against Brian Schlitter (2-2).

Jones’ one-out drive hit the top of the wall and bounced into the bullpen for his ninth home run, and first since May 23.

Three things to remember about Tony Gwynn

By BERNIE WILSON The Associated Press SAN DIEGO – There were two certainties about Tony Gwynn: He could hit a baseball like few other major leaguers, and he was going to laugh.

Gwynn was a craftsman at the plate, whose sweet left-handed swing made him one of baseball’s greatest hitters.

The Hall of Famer died Monday of oral cancer, a disease he attributed to years of chewing tobacco. He was 54.

Any knowledgeable fan can recite Gwynn’s key stats.

He had 3,141 hits – 18th on the all-time list – a career .338 average and won eight batting titles to tie Honus Wagner’s NL record.

There was far more to the

man.

In a rarity in pro sports, Gwynn played his whole career with the Padres, choosing to stay in the city where he was a two-sport college star rather than leaving for bigger paychecks elsewhere.

He was loyal, generous and approachable. He smiled a lot.

It didn’t take much to get him to laugh his hearty laugh.

Gwynn loved San Diego.

San Diego loved “Mr. Padre” right back.

His death left even casual fans grieving.

“Our city is a little darker today without him, but immeasurably better because of him,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said in a statement.

Five things to remember about Gwynn: HIS CRAFT: After spending parts of just two seasons in

the minors, he made his big league debut on July 19, 1982.

Gwynn had two hits that night. After Gwynn doubled, career hits leader Pete Rose, who been trailing the play, said to him: “Hey, kid, what are you trying to do, catch me in one night?”

On Monday, Rose recalled Gwynn’s work ethic and his pioneering use of video to study his at-bats after every game.

“Every day you went to the ballpark in San Diego and we used to go 2:30 or 3 o’clock, Tony would be out there hitting, religiously, every day,” Rose said.

“Fifty-four years old is way too young.”

THE LAUGH: Former Padres teammate Tim Flannery recalls Gwynn as “always laughing, always talking, al-

ways happy.”

It didn’t take much for Gwynn to cackle or break into a horse laugh.

“He had a work ethic unlike anybody else, and had a childlike demeanor of playing the game just because he loved it so much,” said Flannery, third base coach for the San Francisco Giants.

THE 5.5 HOLE: Gwynn loved to hit the other way, through the hole between third base and shortstop.

“All I keep thinking of when I think of Tony Gwynn is that line drive base hit to left field, or the one-hopper in the hole at shortstop to left field,” Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully said.

“He hit the ball wherever it was pitched, and he was just a genius with the bat, without a doubt.”

FOOD FOLLOWING IN DAD’S FOOTSTEPS Son of retired Joliet Junior College culinary professor cooks for celebrities

OLIET – One of Ryan Vonhoff’s friends called him one day and said, “Hey, I found this great job on Craigslist. I don’t feel qualified for it. Do you want it?”

Despite feeling leery of answering a Craigslist ad, Ryan called the number. To his surprise, the interview would be local, and the prospective employer knew a former business colleague.

And that’s how Ryan, son of Chef Keith Vonhoff, who just retired from Joliet Junior College after three decades of teaching, started working for HSG Catering and cooking for celebrities.

Ryan’s first gig was serving as executive chef for the Taylor Swift “Speak Now” tour, he said. Including Swift, assorted VIP, touring personnel and local crews, Ryan cooked up to 1,000 portions of food each day.

Since then, Ryan has also cooked in Chicago for U2, Sir Paul McCartney, The Dave Matthews Band and at Lollapalooza. He will cook this summer for the B96 Pepsi Summer Bash and Peter Frampton when he appears at the Rosemont Theatre.

He also has been the executive chef for Mumford and Sons, Rascal Flatts (“Changed” tour), Eric Church (“Blood, Sweat and Beers” tour) and the American Idol Live Tour.

Tremendous responsibility? Yes, but Ryan feels he excels best under pressure.

“I get to do something that makes me think and makes me care about what I do,” Ryan said. “Every day is different.”

Ryan said his father, Keith, shaped his eating patterns and love for culinary by exposing him to good food early in his childhood, and helping him cater large accounts. Keith’s vast amount of culinary knowledge and skill continues

“He can build a 7-foot wedding cake, break down half a cow and do ice sculpture. Not a lot

Not a lot of people do both,” Ryan said. “But my father thought it was foolish for me not to get the degree from JJC.” That associate’s degree was on top of the comprehensive experience Ryan gained at Rich Harvest Farms, he said. Ryan said he helped Morrell prepare meals – plated and buffets – for large family gatherings, golf outings, corporate events, major TV networks and professional athletes.

“I probably served Michael Jordan 30 times, easi-

ly,” Ryan said.

Morrell, who said he only had a small staff at Rich Harvest Farms, praised Ryan’s talent. Ryan could do nearly everything Morrell asked of him, from prep work to making breads and sauces to grilling, Morrell said.

He added that Ryan helped him out for a short while about a year ago and feels Ryan’s future is solid.

“He can go anywhere he wants to go,” Morrell said.

“The sky’s the limit for him.”

After leaving Rich Harvest Farms, Ryan worked for a variety of places: as a personal chef for a private estate; the executive chef for Edgebrook Golf Course in Sandwich and then banquet chef for Fishermann’s Inn in Elburn.

Ryan also has worked for Beyond Events Catering in Berwyn, where he prepped and served meals to 500 to 2,500 people a shift, according to Ryan’s resume. Through it all, Ryan has continued to grow.

He has learned to cook vegan, diabetic and gluten-free meals, as well explain to clients why 100 percent organic produce and grass-fed beef costs more and is trickier to obtain. He’s also learned the hard way about the reality of food allergies when one client on a private ski trip adversely reacted to the ginger in a ginger syrup.

“I felt so bad,” Ryan said.

“She had no clue she was super sensitive to it.”

Keith said he is pleased his son has taken an interest in his passion, and feels the only limits Ryan in the culinary field are the ones Ryan sets for himself.

“He seems to do very well on his own,” Keith said. “I wish him much success.”

Ryan, who now lives in Hinckley, said he might even consider teaching one day, as his father had, just not yet.

“I’m just not sure I’m done learning myself,” Ryan said.

Typical migraine sufferer doesn’t require brain scan Dear Doctor K: I regularly get terrible migraine headaches. My doctor has prescribed medication, but I still think I should have a brain scan to make sure there’s nothing more serious going on.

Dear Reader: Severe headaches cause both misery and fear. Obviously, the fear is that something serious, like a brain tumor, may be causing the headache.

Still, the pain of even a severe headache rarely comes from something catastrophic like a tumor. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Egilius Spierings, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, about migraines and brain scans.

He said that fear of a sinister, unidentified cause often drives people to get brain scans. According to a report published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, about one in 10 people who seek care for severe headaches end up having a brain scan. The great majority of the scans find nothing wrong.

Brain scans themselves are not risk-free. Repeated computed tomography (CT) scans, for example, expose you to radiation that can raise the risk of cancer down the road. Scans can also lead to more scanning if the test turns

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff up something strange – even though many of these findings do not turn out to be dangerous.

Only a very small percentage of brain scans reveal something abnormal. And most of these “abnormalities” just look a little odd – they won’t affect your health.

You and your doctor should focus on finding an effective treatment for your migraine headaches. If he or she has not already prescribed them, ask your doctor about triptans. These drugs can stop a migraine within two hours if you take the drug when the headache is still mild. If your migraine doesn’t stop within two hours, your doctor should direct you to take more medication. Also ask your doctor about other medications that can help prevent future migraine attacks.

So, when might a brain scan be in order? Red flags that should cause you to talk to your doctor include: • Not having had headaches before. Migraine headaches often begin early in life. They can be really severe, sending a person

to bed. But if today’s headache is just like, and just as bad, as your typical migraines, it is very unlikely to be due to something else.

Be concerned if you’re over age 50 and start having headaches for the first time.

• Headaches that worsen over a few weeks. Migraine attacks typically end completely in hours or days. Be concerned if you have a headache that is with you all the time, day after day.

• A headache that comes on in seconds. A brain hemorrhage – a potentially very serious cause of headache – typically begins like a bolt out of the blue. Five minutes ago you were perfectly fine, and now you’re in agonizing pain.

• Headache associated with fever.

• Headache associated with weakness of a part of the body, new difficulty with balance or feeling confused.

Most headaches, even really bad ones, won’t benefit from a scan. But watch for the danger signs I’ve mentioned; they could require a scan.

Dear Teens: Do you lay off junk foods, get proper rest, exercise, and ration your TV-watching time?

If your answer is yes, congratulations! But you are the exception, not the rule.

According to a study in The Journal of The American Medical Association, U.S. children 18 and younger are adding unwanted pounds at an alarming rate. In the past decade, the percentage of significantly overweight children has almost doubled.

In prior studies, it took 30 years for the overweight percentage to double. This is an alarming statistic.

Among the reasons given for this increase: spending too much time watching television, using computers and playing video games, and parents who feed their families with fast food more often than home cooking.

Just a reminder: Obese teens usually spend their entire lives being overweight!

Dr. Wallace: My mom and my dad and my grandmother, who lives with us, are all addicted to tobacco. One good thing is that they respect my request and they don’t smoke in our house. All three say they wish they had never started, but they still puff away.

I’ve begged them to stop smoking, and they all said that they want to stop smoking, and they have tried, but trying isn’t good enough. I’m afraid if I don’t convince them to stop smoking forever, that I could lose one of them, or even all of them, just when I would need them the most. They each smoke at least a pack of cigarettes daily.

Next, contact your local American Lung Association and American Cancer Society (check the phone book for addresses and phone numbers) for free booklets on the health hazards of smoking and how to quit this highly addictive and expensive habit. Share the booklets with your family. Twice a week, select an appropriate pamphlet and spend half an hour or so with them reading and discussing the material, especially when tips for quitting are the topic.

As you’ve probably discovered, pleading, begging and nagging a smoker to quit just doesn’t work. It takes a smoker’s total commitment to overcome nicotine – but it can be done!

Oh, yes, I forgot to put the stop-smoking challenge into dollars and cents. Since the cost of cigarettes keeps increasing due to the added state and city taxes, even smoking one pack a day really puts a dent in a wallet or a purse. And with three smokers in the house, that’s a lot of money going up in smoke!

‘The Grand Seduction’: A cozy tale of a fish out of water

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Cozy, picturesque and soothingly reassuring, “The Grand Seduction” plays like a cross between “Doc Martin” and “Local Hero,” a fish-out-of-water fable set within a fabulously scenic backdrop, against which wholesome humor and a thoroughgoing humanist streak play out and intertwine with gentle, unforced ease.

Of course, the aforementioned “Local Hero” – Bill Forsythe’s brilliant comedy of dislocation that came out in 1983 – is still unmatched for sheer atmosphere, acuity and heart. But “The Grand Seduction” makes for a pretty fair successor.

The story of a tiny fishing village in Newfoundland that tries to hoodwink an American plastic surgeon into becoming the town doctor comes by way of gifted Canadian filmmakers, including co-screenwriter Ken Scott (“Starbuck”) and director Don McKellar (“Last Night”).

The great Brendan Gleeson – who resembles a ruddier Steve Earle as Murray, the bearded fisherman who masterminds the doc plot – and Taylor Kitsch, playing Paul, his unsuspecting mark, develop a

warm, amusing chemistry in the course of a story that lilts its way toward a far too pat happy ending.

Kitsch, who can currently be seen in HBO’s outstanding movie version of “The Normal Heart,” is particularly impressive as a handsome, somewhat shallow pretty boy who comes to love the run-down but gorgeous settlement where he treats everything from creeping athlete’s foot to nasty cuts and scrapes.

As appealing as the two leads are, however, the true stars of “The Grand Seduction” are the local oddballs and characters who conspire to keep Dr. Paul in their clutches, staging an elaborate game of cricket (his favorite sport) and even listening in to his calls home to ascertain his likes and dislikes. The trope of small-town-quirk may be so hackneyed that it begs to be retired permanently, but Scott – working with fellow screenwriter Mike Dowse – keeps the self-conscious cutesy-ness to a gratifying minimum.

McKellar, for his part, errs on the side of underplaying the inherent adorability of “The Grand Seduction,” which results in occasionally slack pacing but also lets the jokes unfold at their own unhurried

and ultimately very funny pace. The laughs don’t come rat-a-tat-tat, but cumulatively, as the good people of Tickle Cove go about tarting up their town, planting money for Paul to find, earnestly offering him the cocaine they think he’s craving (“We’re down with it!” Murray helpfully informs him) and pretending to like jazz.

The subtext to it all is that a group of dispossessed men – fishermen now forced to rely on welfare checks, an ambitious young doctor whose values have gotten out of whack – rediscover their sense of identity and purpose, in this case by way of a plot development that not every viewer will find particularly salutary. Still, even with the odd misgiving or two, “The Grand Seduction” will effortlessly charm anyone susceptible to an endearing story told with modesty, wit and unprepossessing sweetness.

Seductions don’t always have to be grand in order to work.

• “The Grand Seduction” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated PG-13 and contains some suggestive material and drug references.

It runs 112 minutes.
