Jason Gonzalez told Judge Edward Burmila that since prosecutors are trying to show the victim’s awareness of his “obsession” with the children gave him motive to kill his uncle, he would refute that by showing he is not attracted to women and did not act inappropriately with the children.

Burmila said while Jason Gonzalez’s sexual orientation would not matter to the court, he is allowed to chal-

lenge the motive prosecutors want to show. Burmila noted homosexuality and inappropriate contact with children are not mutually exclusive.

Besides the videos from the electronic organizer, jurors watched a video of Jason Gonzalez and his mother talking in the interview room at the Will County Sheriff’s Office, a conversation Kim Gonzalez knew was being recorded, she testified.

On the recording, Kim Gonzalez ran into the room and hugged her son as she cried and said, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know about your borderline personality disorder.”

Founded in 1864, the Kendall County Record was purchased by the Farrens in 1973.

The Farrens founded the Plano Record in 1976. They ac-

quired the Oswego Ledger in 1979 and the Fox Valley Sentinel in 1980. The two papers were consolidated and called the Ledger-Sentinel. The Sandwich Record was launched by the Farrens in 1985.

“The decision to sell was a difficult one,” publisher Jeff Farren said, but he added, “We believe Shaw will be able to continue providing good newspapers for our readers and advertisers with more online content in the future.”

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1851, Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated media company in the U.S. It owns and operates newspapers, magazines, websites and other publications throughout Chicago’s suburbs and northern Illinois, as well as in Iowa.

“You lie a lot, but you’re not as good as you think you are. You’re a very arrogant liar,” Kim Gonzalez responded.

Kim Gonzalez told the jury she cooperated with police because she believed her son killed her brother.

“I still do ... you’re manipulative,” she said. “You lied about the drug dealers. You went in and shot him. Who goes in to rob someone and shoots somebody that many [13] times? It was a crime of hatred. A crime of passion.”

The trial will continue Wednesday.

Plainfield businesses profit from weekly cruise nights

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Six-year-old Palen Zitzka and her 3-yearold sister Gracian gobbled up small cups of gelato during a hot and humid Tuesday evening welcomed by area residents – as well as Corvette owners – in downtown Plainfield.

Their parents got the treat for them from Simply Saucy as the new to Plainfield family walked along Lockport Street in the downtown area during the June 9 summer cruise night event, which features classic and specialty cars lining streets and parking areas.

“It’s a great time,” said Zack Zitzka, the girls’ father, who has attended two Plainfield cruise nights so far. “We get the kids out and they can walk around. I see the cars and [my wife Lauren] checks the new businesses.”

Downtown Plainfield Cruise Nights have been a regular event in the village for more than two decades. This summer, cruise nights are scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday through Sept. 1, except for July 21.

The event has evolved to meet the needs of businesses along Lockport Street, many of which are enjoying a resurgence thanks to historic designation of the downtown area and a growing village population.

Downtown is a place for unique, local and crafty businesses. Plainfield officials want to keep it that way.

But that means downtown businesses forego having recognizable big-box and anchor stores nearby, such as Wal-Mart, Target, Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s and the possible foot traffic they could bring along the stretch of Lockport Street between James Street and Route 59.

Events, such as cruise night, draw people into the area.

“Cruise nights are our biggest nights for downtown business,” said Tasha Kitson, exec-

utive director of the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber took over running cruise nights, and the annual downtown Candlelight

Christmas event, after a nonprofit partnership of Plainfield businesses called MainStreet Plainfield ended two years ago.

Tony Padovano, a barber at Lincoln Way Barber Shop, 24045 Lockport St., said Tuesday cruise nights are hit or miss when it comes to bringing in more customers. But the most important benefit was the visibility and advertising opportunity it provides.

“People driving by often

miss the shop because we’re kind of in the middle, not on a street corner,” Padovano said, adding Lincoln Way benefits from being the oldest surviving business in downtown Plainfield. “We consistently have good, solid business.”

Joliet looks at hike in water, sewer rates

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet officials are considering a hike in water and sewer rates that could go into effect in October.

City Council members are likely to question the need for a rate hike, which could be anywhere from 9 to 36 percent in two scenarios presented to the Finance Committee on Tuesday.

The city’s utility director told the committee his department is facing financial problems in three years without a rate hike.

“By 2018, we’re going to run out of money if we don’t do anything,” Utilities Director James Eggen told the committee. “We’re trying to maintain prudent management of the system.”

The water and sewer department typically runs on revenues collected through rates.

Council members showed some reluctance to consider a rate hike.

Councilman John Gerl noted the water and sewer department currently has a $29 million cash balance and said, “I think we need to look at that before we consider an

Finance Committee Chairman Michael Turk, reporting to the full City Council after the committee meeting, said staff was looking at enacting a rate hike in October but added, “It’s too early right now to say if and what that would be.”

The city’s last increase in

water and sewer rates was from 2009 to 2011, when rates were hiked 35 percent the first year and 5 percent in the next two years.

The proposed rate hikes are in a study being developed for the city by consulting firm Burns & MacDonnell.

The report made to the com-

mittee noted water and sewer projects planned for the next 10 years total $223 million. Of that, $71 million would be spent on projects mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Salvation Army

The City Council approved

a special use permit for a The Salvation Army resale store at 1395 S. Larkin Ave. The Salvation Army store would be the second charitable organization this year to open a resale shop in space previously occupied by a mainstream retailer on one of the city’s main commercial corridors. The store would go into a 22,000-square-foot building still being used by Century Tile.

The Salvation Army would use the entire building. Century Tile may relocate to another spot in the city.

Earlier this year, St. Vincent de Paul opened a resale shop at 1820 W. Jefferson Street, taking a space that had been occupied by an Aldi grocery store. Aldi moved to a new store on Jefferson Street.

St. Vincent de Paul has another Joliet store in the downtown area.

City Manager Jim Hock noted to the City Council at its workshop meeting Monday The Salvation Army previously had a store downtown, but it was displaced in the early 1990s by construction of Harrah’s Casino and its parking deck.

Joliet parent concerned about son’s expulsion

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet mom said she doesn’t think Joliet Township High School District 204 officials were fair when considering the expulsion of her son.

LaQuita Walker expressed concerns at the high school board meeting Tuesday that her son – a Joliet Central High School freshman – has been recommended for expulsion and she feels the “school district has attempted to block me from getting information relative to my case.”

She also said she felt there

is less concern in the school district to support students in need.

Walker brought along her educational advocate, G.N. Whitaker, a Joliet Township High School alumna, who said there is “an element of zero tolerance policy” that has been in effect with Walker’s son.

Whitaker said after having reviewed information from Walker’s case and assisting her, she was “saddened” to learn one teacher wrote him up every day for “petty and frivolous referrals.” She said there was no intervention, calls or meetings with Walker, her son or the teacher to recti-

fy the issue.

“What happened is that progressively, just based upon this one teacher giving a referral every other day, it exacerbated,” Whitaker said. “So now, we’re here for an expulsion recommendation for a situation that probably if attended properly could have been dealt with on the other end.”

She said Walker is trying to do the best to support her child and the public needs to be aware of the amount of expulsions the school districts issue.

After the meeting, Board President Jeff Pierson said he had no comment regard-

ing Walker’s concern. He said board members take expulsions seriously and it’s one of the hardest measures for the board to consider.

Other board matters

JTHS board members approved the resignation of Rebecca Kemp, AVAC/PI/VI Transition Coordinator, who will resign July 23. They also approved Mary Balsie, a district curriculum director, becoming a math teacher at Joliet West High School, starting July 1.

The board approved a 3 percent salary increase for all administrators not in a multi-

year contract for the 2015-16 school year. Among those administrators receiving a salary increase would be the superintendent, principals, assistant principals, curriculum directors, said Ilandus Hampton, JTHS assistant superintendent of business services.

The board also approved a 3 percent increase in salaries for all nonbargaining staff for the 2015-16 school year.

Hampton said those positions include district office, child care, information technology, cafeteria, special transportation, ROTC, buildings, grounds, custodial and security staff.

JOLIET – The city’s legal costs on the Evergreen Terrace case since 2005 total $6 million.

The total costs to date were provided by the city’s Finance Department as the Joliet City Council prepares in the coming weeks to decide whether to pursue the acquisition of the low-income apartment complex.

Joliet does run the risk of Evergreen Terrace owners seeking compensation for its legal costs, which are at least $6.4 million, if it drops the condemnation effort after the legal battle that has gone on since 2005.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said he did not believe Evergreen Terrace owners would pursue the city for their legal tab.

“If we decide not to buy it, I think we just walk away,” O’Dekirk said.

Evergreen Terrace owners are being sued for unpaid legal bills by the firm that represented them in the case before pulling out in early 2014. Ungaretti & Harris filed a lawsuit a year ago seeking $6.4 million from Ronald Gidwitz, a onetime Republican candidate for governor, and his family, the primary owners of Evergreen Terrace.

City legal costs began to spike in 2012, when preparations were made for the condemnation trial that went on for two years before a federal judge ruled in Joliet’s favor.

The city spent about $790,000 on legal bills until 2012, according to numbers provided by the finance department. In 2012, the city spent $2.5 million. The trial, handled by the law firm of Figliulo & Silverman, began in October of that year.

City Manager Jim Hock said most of the $2.5 million is attributable to “a mixture of depositions and preparations for the actual trial.”

The city spent another $2 million in 2013 and $402,000 in 2014. The trial ended in May 2014, and the judge’s ruling for Joliet came in September.

On June 1, Evergreen Terrace owners filed notice that they intend to appeal the judge’s ruling in 2014 and the jury’s verdict on the price in March.

The Joliet City Council plans to hold a special meeting in early July to hear a presentation from consultants on the future costs of managing and redeveloping Evergreen Terrace before making a decision on acquiring the property.

CHANNAHON – The village of Channahon had 21 hail damage repair solicitors apply to be registered in town in just one day, according to Village President Missey Schumacher.

“We are looking at the applications as quickly as we can,” she said during Monday’s Village Board meeting.

On June 10, a hail storm that Schumacher said was particularly long-lasting battered homes and cars. The next morning, solicitors were knocking on doors.

An advisory released by the police department last week and on the village’s website stated, “Hail damage solicitors need to have a permit from the village. Ensure anyone at your door is permitted, licensed and bonded ... All solicitors in Channahon need to first be permitted ... and display their permit(s) when soliciting doorto-door. With any work done to your home, please ensure any contractor is licensed, insured and bonded.”

The 21 firms registered with the village Monday, officials said.

Applications are available at Village Hall, 24555 S Navajo Drive, or online. The fee is $100, and the permit is valid for 15 days per calendar year.

Schumacher said after the meeting that she and the police department are keeping an eye on creek, river and canal levels. The community has received several inches of rain over the past two days. Water levels are high, but are not at flood stage.

On Tuesday morning, the village put a photo on its Facebook page warning of standing water on U.S. Route 6 at Navajo Drive, which had reduced traffic to one lane in each direction. The Illinois Department of Transportation estimated the water would remain for a day or two, according to the village.

The decision handed down Tuesday noted the federal government’s approval of the expressway was based on a faulty “no build” analysis, and failed to consider other alternatives.

“The flawed ‘no build’ forecast is the foundation for the agencies’ projection of future traffic in the study area and their conclusion that the existing roadways cannot adequately serve the future transportation needs,” the decision stated.

Because that analysis does not substantiate the purpose and need, the FHWA’s approval of the ROD and final EIS is arbitrary and capricious and in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act, the ruling added.

The court Tuesday granted the plaintiff’s motion for summary judgment.

Learner said the decision is “well-grounded,” and should be viewed by Gov. Bruce Rauner, who singled out the project earlier this year by placing it on hold, as “the last straw.”

“Rauner had already put the Illiana on terminal life support. The state doesn’t have any money to pay for it,” Learner said.

Stacy Myers, with Openlands Chicago, said the ruling is a “tremendous step forward” for those opposed to the project. She said the ruling “called out” flawed and exaggerated population projections, noting the analysis thereby fails to justify the need for the road.

Supporters have said the controversial $1.5 billion tollway project – which would serve as a 47-mile east-west link from I-55 in Wilmington to I-65 near Lowell, Indiana – would relieve congestion on local roads and promote economic growth.

Critics have called it a “boondoggle” that could leave taxpayers footing the bill if revenue projections fall short.

The FHWA put its stamp of approval on the project in December, but the Illiana hit a snag when Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner announced that all state transportation projects – including the Illiana – were on hold pending further review.

Considered by some to be a potential nail in the Illiana Expressway project’s coffin, a U.S. District Court judge Tuesday ruled the federal government’s approval of the $1.3 billion tollway project is invalid.

A critical piece in the Federal Highway Administration’s record of decision – handed down late last year – was “arbitrary and capricious” and violates federal environmental law, according to U.S. District Court Judge Jorge Alonso.

The action doesn’t put a definite end to the bi-state tollway project linking Interstate 55 in Illinois to Interstate 65 in Indiana. But in declaring the federal record of decision and the Tier I environmental impact study invalid, the decision sends Illinois and Indiana transportation officials back to square one without money or backing from the governor’s office.

Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Guy Tridgell said via email Tuesday the state agency is still reviewing the ruling and “exploring our options at this time.”

“This is a victory,” said Howard Learner, executive director of the Environmental Law and Policy Center,

“Rauner had already put the Illiana on terminal life support. The state doesn’t have any money to pay for it.”

Bolingbrook woman killed when car drives into Romeoville pond

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A Bolingbrook woman died after a vehicle she was driving veered into a retention pond in Romeoville overnight.

Cynthia K. Breig, 33, was pronounced dead Tuesday at 1:55 a.m. in the emergency room at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities received a call of a vehicle in the retention pond next to the intersection of Lakeview Drive and Remington Boulevard at 11:29 p.m.

Monday, according to a Romeoville Police Department news release.

“The investigation showed a gold 2002 Honda was traveling north on Lakeview Drive,” Deputy Chief Steven Lucchesi said in the release. “The ve-

Divers from the Romeoville Fire Department found Breig in the submerged vehicle, and both were removed from the pond, according to the release.

According to the coroner’s office, Breig was the driver of the vehicle.

Romeoville police are investigating the crash, and the determination of a cause for Breig’s death is pending the final outcome of autopsy, toxicological and police reports.

Joliet road projects set to begin THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Several local roadway projects are slated to begin this week, Joliet officials announced.

Starting Wednesday, a portion of Brandon Road will close for reconstruction, from Noel Road to Millsdale Road, as well as from Millsdale to Schweitzer Road, according to a city news release.

The city expects the work to be finished by October, according to the release. Eastwest traffic on Millsdale will not be affected.

Detours will be posted for

Brandon, and the city asks that drivers be cautious and seek alternate routes.

Beginning Thursday, weather permitting, resurfacing of several streets also will begin.

Hennepin Drive, from Von Esch to Mall Entrance No. 6, as well as the Interstate 55 East Frontage Road, from Black Road to Terrance Ferry Drive, will undergo resurfacing.

Streets also slated to see resurfacing this construction season include Springfield, from Jefferson to Black; Ingalls, from Hosmer to Raynor;

Black Road from Larkin to Midland; Midland, from Jefferson to Morgan and from Clara to Dellmar; Theodore from Essington to Delrose; and Spencer from Marigold to Cherry Hill.

Construction is expected to continue on roadways for a month after work starts, according to the city. Roads will remain open to traffic during construction, but the city suggests drivers avoid these roads when fresh oil is put down.

sure, the state transportation agency’s attorneys have, on more than one occasion, delayed the presentation of IDOT’s traffic impact study, citing the need for more time and more analysis.

The latest request outlines a range of documents – including traffic studies and data regarding intersections and stretches of Laraway Road, Centerpoint Way and Baseline Road, major access points into the two intermodals.

The request also asks for “any and all traffic studies or traffic data” required by the annexation agreements between Centerpoint, Elwood and Joliet.

Elwood attorney Paul Streicher said Tuesday the IDOT report is “overdue,” noting IDOT’s main purpose for additional hearings was to present the new evidence.

“The case can’t proceed until that report is filed,” Streicher said. “The failure to timely produce the report serves only to delay a resolution.”

In its February application for new hearings to discuss the evidence, IDOT staff explained the crossing’s closure has “added significant additional commercial vehicle traffic to an already-congested transportation system.”

Cicero man sentenced to 24 years for sexual assault of a child THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – A Cicero man was sentenced to 24 years in prison for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl, the Will County State’s Attorney office said Tuesday.

Aaron Rios-Salazar, 61, entered a blind plea of guilty in March to one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of

a child, State’s Attorney James Glasgow’s office said in a news release.

Rios-Salazar was charged with Aaron Riossexual assault Salazar in 2010 after an investigation by the Plainfield Police Department. The state’s attorney said

he fled to Mexico for several years while the case was pending.

He was arrested on a warrant in 2014 after returning to the United States.

Circuit Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes sentenced Rios-Salazar, the state’s attorney said. Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Fillipitch secured the guilty plea and sentence.

On June 9, Miller was making loudspeaker announcements. In one he joked, asking the owner of the Corvette to move or be ticketed. It was Corvette Night.

New Lenox fire district promotes 7, hires 4 THE HERALD–NEWS NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Fire Protection District has sworn in four new firefighters and promoted seven people to lieutenant.

The district has sworn in firefighter/paramedics John Burke, Brent Havener, Weston Lancaster and Joseph Ward, according to a department news release.

The four were next in line on the eligibility list and have worked as contract employees with the district.

“Making it onto the eligibility list does not mean you will become a district employee during those two years,” Fire Chief Steve Engledow

said in the release. “It is a very big deal, and the dream of many firefighters, to become a district employee. We were very excited to be able to bring these firefighters aboard to the district.”

Seven also were promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

They were Brian Applegate, Mathew Buckley, Eric Chellios, Michael Parkhurst, Jeffrey Petschinsky, Lucas Rettke and Dan Reynolds.

“These promotions were all well-deserved,” Engledow said in the release. “These firefighters have all worked extremely hard to get to where they are, and we couldn’t be prouder of them for their efforts.”

Q: Is it a good idea to hire a lawyer who has lots of TV ads or billboard ads?

A: There are two good ways to hire a lawyer, in my opinion. The first is to hire a lawyer in your community who regularly handles similar matters and who has a good reputation. Lawyers in your own community go to the same law schools, get the same continuing legal education, and frequently get better results because they understand the geographical implications as applies to juries in civil cases, and because they regularly are appearing in front of hearing officers in matters such as workers’ compensation cases. The notion that one simply has to travel far to find a good lawyer has been out the window for many years.

The problem with billboards and TV ads is that they can be placed simply by paying the money, regardless of the quality of the attorney. And since most of the better attorneys I know, at least in the personal injury and workers’ compensation fields are busy, what does that tell you about the attorney that has to obtain business through advertising?

There are also rating services, but the only one that is really time tested is Martindale Hubbell which rates lawyers AV, BV, CV or no rating. Any of the ratings means it’s a good lawyer, but the V means honesty and integrity, which is equally as important. Of course, our firm has an AV rating. You would be surprised at the number of lawyers with no rating.

As for other rating services, I know one attorney in Chicago who has such a rating from a different service, and I wouldn’t send my dog there.

It’s like picking a doctor. When you want the surgeon who does the same surgery 50 to 100 times a year, or would you rather have the doctor who is doing the surgery for the first time? Similarly, it’s a fact of life that discretion of the hearing officer is frequently involved in the handling of cases.

Would you rather have the lawyer that appears before the hearing officer regularly, who the hearing officer knows to be honest or the stranger who may not be aware of whatever local rules or customs are practiced? The fact that a lawyer or law firm has their faces plastered all over Television or billboards, unfortunately, does not equate to that lawyer or law firm being the one for you.

We all get updates on ways to limit access to our pages to only family and friends. There is almost always something circulating regarding our “right to privacy” as to these types of accounts. However, the reality of the situation is that anything you post can probably be accessed if the Defendant wants to get the information.

For example, someone can simply view your page, depending on your settings, and learn all kinds of things about you. Alternately, a “New Friend” request can sometimes help them gain access. Additionally, some courts have entered orders requiring the Plaintiff provide access to the Plaintiff’s social media accounts. No matter how access is obtained, once it is, every post you have made is now available for the Defense counsel to review.

Why is this important? Well, for many reasons. First, something you posted when you were 15 and totally irrelevant

to your current case, may put you in an unfavorable light at age 30. Normally, no one would know of your comments because they were made so long ago. Unfortunately, now they are. Second, sometimes the language you may use on social media may not be the type of language you use in everyday life. “Colorful” language in a joke may make readers laugh, but doesn’t look good a year later, in writing. Third, always be careful about posting pictures. Though it may be a “cute” picture of your vacation, is it a “cute” potential exhibit at trial? Finally, once you have an injury and a potential lawsuit, you need to be careful of any information you post on social media. For example, you may post that you went bike riding this past weekend and post some pictures. You look great and are smiling. However, you actually were in a great deal of pain following this bike ride. No matter what you later post or say, those comments and pictures you originally posted give a very different impression. Alternately, if you constantly post about your pain, a Defense attorney can make it look like you are a hypochondriac who is simply seeking attention.

If you use social media and are hurt in an accident, it is best to avoid posting anything that a jury could misconstrue. If in doubt, don’t post it. If you still aren’t sure, consult with your attorney. adno=0310530

ANSWER: You are not going to like this answer: Your friend’s children will most probably get everything including the home at his death.

Under Illinois law, if your friend dies without a Will and the home is in his name only and most of the personal things are also in his name, then his children will inherit everything.

Section 2-1(b) of the Probate Act of 1975 says the following about your situation: Since there is no surviving spouse but there are children of your friend who died, then your friend’s entire estate goes to his children. Period. Illinois does

not recognize “common law” marriages as some states do.

Also, Illinois does not recognize “palimony”; that is, support for one member of a couple who never married after they have separated.

If your friend’s children get really nasty following his death, then you may have to prove to a Court that those personal items of yours and your furniture that you brought into your friend’s home are really yours.

To avoid this situation, urge your friend to contact his attorney to prepare a Will and possibly an inter-vivos or “living” trust.

Your friend should also have his attorney prepare a durable Power-of-Attorney for Property to state who will handle his business affairs if he becomes disabled. Lastly, he should also make a Health Care Power of Attorney to appoint someone to make decisions regarding lifesupport and do-not-resuscitate orders if he is not able to do so himself.

QUESTION: I have a friend with whom I have been living for more then five years. We are both over 65 and we were both married before. Our spouses are both deceased. Because of certain financial concerns we have not gotten married. He has children from his marriage; I have none. I sold my house.

Most of the furniture and personal items in “our home” are mine. However, the house and everything we’ve purchased since we moved in together are in my friend’s name only. Jeffrey J. Bergbower, age 52, of Wheaton, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015, with his loving family by his side Survived by his wife of 22 years, Christina (Filippo); their children, Amelia, Livi and Lilah; his loving parents, Curtis and Elaine Bergbower of Sun City, AZ; beloved brother of Terri (Gerald) Phillips of Rockdale, IL; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jeff attended Plainfield schools.

Graduate of Lewis University. He was a business owner for many years. He was a member of Sigma Epsilon Fraternity and the Knights of Columbus.

As per Jeff’s request, cremation rights have been accorded. A memorial mass will be held June 20, 2015, at 12:00 p.m., at St. Daniel the Prophet Catholic Church in Wheaton, IL. Born: June 6, 1949; in Joliet, IL Died: June 3, 2015; in Mendota, IL Terry Berglund, age 65, died peacefully, surrounded by his brothers and sisters, Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Heritage Health Center in Mendota, Illinois.

He was born in Joliet and raised near Plainfield, attending school in Plainfield, IL. More recently he had resided in Quartzite, Arizona until 2014 when he returned to Illinois due to health complications. Ptak Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Terry was born on June 6, 1949, and was the oldest son of Clifford W. Berglund and Loma Beth (Berryman) Berglund. He was the oldest of seven children. He had a great love of the outdoors, especially fishing.

He served our country as a Marine for seven years.

Preceded in death by his parents, Loma Beth Berglund Berens and Clifford W. Berglund.

Survived by his son, Christopher Berglund of Hoopeston Illinois, two granddaughters, Sela and Senna Berglund and six brothers and sisters, Greg (Sue) of Lago Vista,

Texas, Keith (Pennie) of Harding, Illinois, Kevin of Plainfield, Illinois, Laurel (Mike) House of Mendota, Illinois, Elaine (John) List of Monee, Illinois and Holly (Jeff) Gawlik of Plainfield, Illinois along with numerous niece and nephews.

RONALD E. BRUGGEMAN

Born: May 7, 1933; in Manhattan, IL Died: June 11, 2015; in Morton, IL Ronald E. Bruggeman, age 82, of Morton, formerly of Joliet, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015, at his home. He was born May 7, 1933, in Manhattan, to George and Laura Bruggeman. He married Charlene Koehler on May 21, 1955, in Joliet.

Surviving are his wife, Charlene Bruggeman of Morton; one daughter, Kim (William) Sing of Joliet; three grandchildren, Brandon (Laura) Sing of Southaven, Miss., Brittany Sing and Bryce Sing, both of Joliet; and two great-grandchildren, Bronson and Beckem Sing.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

He was a Korean War United States Marine Corps veteran.

Ronald was employed at Caterpillar Inc. for 35 years until his retirement. While at Caterpillar, he worked overseas for 4-1/2 years in Belgium.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Morton, where he was active in the church and the school.

Ronald enjoyed following and supporting his grandson, Brandon, when he was playing professional baseball in the minor leagues for the Cubs driving his motor home to watch him play throughout the country.

Cremation will be accorded. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2015, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Morton, with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps following the memorial service at the church. Burial of the cremated remains will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Joliet at a later date.

MIKE CASTRALE Mike Castrale, age 92, of West Frankfort, Illinois, formerly Elwood, passed away Saturday June 13, 2015 at Herrin Hospital.

Born March 18, 1923 in Virden, Illinois, Mike was a son of the late Joe and Margaret Baietto-Castrale. He was a Veteran of the United States Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945, and a 35 year employee at Navistar in Melrose Park.

Survivors include his two sons, Michael (Joyce) Castrale and Larry (Phyllis) Castrale; four grandchildren, Amy, Amanda, Craig and Jesica; four great grandchildren, Thomas, Cody, Aidan and Elenie; and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret Castrale on May 27, 2015, and his brother James Castrale.

She was a past President of the Pershing School PTA; past President and longstanding member of the Police Wives Association, a volunteer for the Crisis Line of Joliet, and assisted with FISH. Ann was an avid reader of mystery novels who also enjoyed doing puzzles, playing cards, and board games. She was a lover of sports and spent time watching all types of professional sports, but she cheered loudest for the Bears and the Cubs. Ann was a regular on her league bowling team for many years.

Ann was known for her fun loving personality, her kindness and warmth. She felt her best times were when she was surrounded by family and friends. Her love was evident by her devotion to her children and grandchildren. She was faithful in her attendance at their sporting events and dance recitals.

Rosann F. Kohler (nee Fagan) Rosann Fagan, 91, passed away on June 10, 2015, at her residence in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. She was the daughter of Elizabeth (Elsie) (Gallagher) and James R. Fagan, long-time residents of Joliet and Chicago. Rosann was born on November 4, 1923, in Joliet, where she resided until moving to Naperville in 2000, and to Highlands Ranch in 2012 to be with her family.

She was a devoted and cherished member of St. Raymond Nonnatus and St. Paul’s in Joliet, and Our Lady of Mercy in Aurora. Rosann graduated from Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart High School in Lake Forest, IL, in 1941, and continued her education at Barat College in Lake Forest, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945. She received her Master of Arts in Library Science degree from Rosary College in River Forest, IL, in 1953.

Rosann possessed a relentless passion for learning through her career and entire life. She taught kindergarten for the Joliet School District, was the librarian for Lockport Township High School, and served as the learning resource director for the Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C from 1971 until she retired in 1985. Rosann was active in the Visitation and Aid Society in Joliet and an active supporter of the Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Blessed with an indomitable positive Irish spirit and an unwavering Catholic faith, Rosann fully committed her life to her family. Whether spending time with her parents, sharing laughs with her sister or enjoying time with her children, Rosann always kept focus on the importance of family.

During her retirement, Rosann thoroughly enjoyed traveling. Annual trips to Siesta Key, FL, were a highlight: walking on the beach, reading a novel and keeping an eye on the clock for happy hour. She traveled to Cypress and the Greek isles for a wedding with her devoted sister and best friend, Mariann, made several trips to Colorado to visit her sons James and Jeffrey, daughter-in-law Kathy, and grandchildren Brendan, Allie, and James. In 1996, Rosann and her sister took their families to Ireland on a trip that included visits to relatives in County Westmeath, and

to Cobh, County Cork, from where Rosann’s family originally departed for the United States.

Continuing Rosann’s legacy are her two children, James (Vickie) Kohler of Arvada, CO, and Jeffrey (Kathy) Kohler of Centennial, CO; her grandchildren, Brendan, Alexandra and James Kohler of Centennial, CO; dear niece, Aimee (Dean) Bennett of Castle Rock, CO; and nephew, John (Becky) Fitzgerald of St. Charles, IL; great-nephew, Padraig Fitzgerald; and step-great niece, Olivia Evers.

Rosann joins her parents, Elsie (1974) and James (1983); and husband, Frank Kohler (1974) in eternal life.

A Memorial Mass celebrating Rosann’s life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Jude, 2212 McDonough Street, in Joliet, with Rev. Richard Ross officiating. PAULINE MARIE VIANO POMYKALA Born: Aug. 3, 1930 Died: June 14, 2015

As the gates of Heaven opened on June 14, 2015, the sweet sounds of a polka were to be heard. And as the Lord welcomed her Home, there was her beloved John waiting, and together they danced again.

John and Pauline were married on January 14, 1956 and they have waited for this dance since January 17, 1997. Peacefully, Pauline has traded her many years of pain and her wheelchair for her dancing shoes once again.

She leaves behind the fondest memories with her only daughter, Jane Ann Klingler and her two cherished granddaughters, Jennifer Lynn and Janelle Marie Klingler.

She was blessed to enjoy her great-granddaughter for many years, and it was Pauline herself, in combining five generations of names, who said “How beautiful Jalina Rose will be!” Her Jalina Rose will dance in the sweet memories of her Nana forever.

Pauline is also survived by a most special family member, Jim Clymer; her two brothers, Richard (Cathy) Viano and Fredrick Viano; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.

Surviving also is Pauline’s uncle, John Lovati; and her most beloved “Bank Club Girls.”

Cremation rites will be accorded.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 17, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home with a memorial service at 6:00 p.m.

Dick was a barber at Shaw’s Ingalls Park Barber Shop for 53 years. He enjoyed all the people he met and friendships he built with his loyal customers throughout the years. Dick was a dedicated father, coaching numerous softball and baseball teams or cheering on his children from the stands. He carried on that dedication to his twelve talented grandchildren as he watched with pride from the stands of their numerous sports and activities. In his spare time, Dick enjoyed spending time at their cottage in Michigan, golfing, fishing and watching his beloved White Sox. He was also an entertaining musician and storyteller, often writing his own songs to play on the organ and guitar.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary (Delrose) Shaw; brother-in-law, Larry Lucas; maternal grandparents, Blaise and Antoinette Delrose; and paternal grandparents, James and Anna Shaw.

Boastful Trump elbows his way into the 2016 GOP race

Real-estate mogul and reality-TV star Donald Trump, who has brazenly flirted with running for office before but never followed through, announced Tuesday he will seek the Republican nomination for president. Trump entered the race in a bombastic spectacle befitting a man whose businesses successes are matched by his penchant for self-promotion.

“All of my life, I have heard, a truly successful person, a really successful person, and even a modestly successful person, cannot run for public office – just can’t happen,” Trump said. “Yet that’s the kind of mindset you need to make this country great again.”

Trump, the 12th high-profile Republican to enter the 2016 race, announced his candidacy in a free-ranging 40-minute speech in which he boasted about his ability to fortify the border with Mexi-

co to prevent “rapists” from entering the U.S. (“Nobody builds walls better than me”) and invited President Barack Obama to play golf at one of his courses.

“Sadly, the American dream is dead,” Trump said.

“But if I get elected president, I will bring it back bigger and better and stronger than ever before, and we will make America great again.”

He mixed boasts about his wealth with promises to spark the economy (“I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created”), effortlessly defeat the Islamic State group and negotiate trade deals with China.

He pulled no punches with his fellow Republicans, finishing a riff on Jeb Bush by saying, “How the hell can you vote for this guy?”

The speech drew immediate scorn online from Republicans who fear Trump will turn an otherwise serious primary contest into a circus. Trump, well known from his years in the public eye, is polling just well enough at the moment to land a spot in one of the early Republican

debates, potentially pushing a more established candidate off the stage.

“I just apologized to my toddler for bringing him up in a country where Donald Trump runs for Prez, gets better than 2% in the polls,” veteran Republican strategist Liz Mair tweeted.

GOP operative Brendan Buck, who helped Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, tweeted: “Who do I blame for Trump running for president?”

The Democratic National Committee’s response dripped with sarcasm, saying Trump “adds some much-needed seriousness that has previously been lacking from the GOP field.”

Trump held up a onepage document Tuesday that showed his net worth to be about $9 billion, money that he intimated proves he’s qualified to be president.

“I’m using my own money.

I’m not using lobbyists. I’m not using donors,” Trump said. “I don’t care. I’m really rich.”

“It sounds crass,” he said.

“It’s not crass.”

Hastert and the statue of limitations SPRINGFIELD – Know any living Illinois politician who deserves a $500,000 statue?

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

But earlier this year, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan was pushing to erect a statue on the Illinois Capitol grounds of former U.S. Speaker of the House Denny Hastert.

Hastert essentially said, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

At the point Hastert declined the honor, he already was under investigation by the feds for the manner in which he allegedly funneled hush money to a former student.

The Associated Press has reported the payouts involved allegations of sexual abuse from the period Hastert coached and taught at Yorkville High School.

In fairness to Madigan, he had no idea of any problems lurking when he recommended the honor.

But it raises the question: “Why should state government even consider spending money on a statue to honor a politician when it’s flat-out broke?”

The answer, of course, is that’s what politicians do.

The political class exists for its own benefit.

And they like to laud one another with honors.

Considering the number of highways, public buildings, bridges and other structures named after politicians, one can’t help but wonder if Prairie State pols suffer from an edifice complex.

Is there nothing they won’t do to honor themselves?

Look no further than the Illinois Statehouse,

All served as governor – and all ended up in prison.

Rod Blagojevich, our only former governor currently incarcerated, does not have a portrait in the statehouse – yet.

But my favorite painting in the building is one of former Illinois Secretary of State and Speaker of the House Paul Powell.

Powell’s motto was, “There’s only one thing worse than a defeated politician, and that’s a broke one.”

When Powell died in 1970, more than $800,000 was found stuffed in shoe boxes in the closet of his Springfield hotel room.

That would be about $4.9 million in today’s money.

And Paul Powell never drew a salary greater than $30,000.

Powell’s portrait used to hang in the visitors gallery of the Illinois House.

Whenever I’d walk by it, I liked to give the picture frame a nudge.

As with so many Illinois politicians, he deserves to be remembered the way he was – crooked.

Stop arguing – state needs budget

The time for “double-dogdare you” is over. Illinois needs a budget.

Gov. Bruce Rauner and his nemesis, House Speaker Michael Madigan, have been playing the age-old kids game called “I double-dog-dareyou” about the 2016 Illinois budget, which Madigan says we have and Rauner says we haven’t.

As we’ve been over many, many times on this page, Madigan, the state’s top Democrat, said the state has a 2016 budget, the one passed at the end of May with only Democratic support. Rauner said it’s a bogus budget because it proposes to spend $3 billion to $4 billion more than the state will collect in taxes. The state constitution requires a balanced budget.

Rauner, who was elected to rein in spending and to make Illinois more business-friendly to attract investment and jobs, said he won’t sign it.

In fact, Rauner said he won’t sign any budget that doesn’t contain some of the pro-business and cost-cutting reforms in his “turnaround

agenda.” They include reforming workers’ compensation law, eliminating prevailing wage requirements that Rauner said drive up the cost of infrastructure projects, and capping property taxes so any local tax increase would require referendum approval. He wants lawsuit reforms, term limits, a reduction of mandates to local governments and a slew of other things.

But Madigan said no, he won’t consider any reforms that weaken unions or make it tougher for injured workers to get a decent settlement for their injuries. He said Rauner’s reforms can be considered later (on the 12th of Never, maybe?).

We find ourselves, again, between a rock and a hard place, with Madigan and his sidekick, Senate President John Cullerton, over here and Rauner over there, continuing to play double-dogdare while the clock moves ever closer to June 30.

That’s the last day of fiscal 2015. On July 1, we no longer have a budget. State Comptroller Leslie Munger was

in Rockford on Thursday to warn that, without a budget, she won’t be able to pay state vendors. State employees will stop being paid after July 15, and schools would not receive state aid by Aug. 10.

Checks to Medicaid providers and expedited payments to nonprofit agencies and small businesses also would stop.

Pension and debt payments would continue.

Conventional wisdom told us our leaders would end their dog-and-pony shows when push came to shove, get together in the governor’s conference room at the Capitol and hammer out a compromise budget in which neither side gets all it wants but both sides can live with it.

But these are unconventional times. Rauner has been hurling insults at Madigan, who is doing a slow burn. What’s developing before our eyes is a nonviolent version of World War I trench warfare: Both sides dig in and prepare for a long, withering conflict.

Rockford rallies late to edge Slammers

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After getting swept in a weekend series at Traverse City, the Joliet Slammers had a difficult assignment as they hoped to get back on the winning track.

The Slammers met Frontier League West Division leader Rockford and starting pitcher Tony Rizzotti, who entered with a 3-0 record and a 0.00 ERA in 31 innings pitched.

But Joliet got off to a good start by collecting five straight singles after two men had been retired in the first opening to grab a quick 3-0 advantage over a team that led by 6½ games in the standings.

And with pitcher Kevin

Walter turning in his second straight quality start, that early burst looked as if it might be to be enough as the Slammers took a 4-1 lead into the eighth.

But the Aviators scored two runs in the eighth and two more with two outs in the ninth to rally for a 5-4 victory before 1,673 fans at Silver Cross Field.

Walter allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out eight in six innings. On June 11 against Washington, he gave up two hits, no earned runs and struck out nine in six innings.

In Joliet’s first, Mike Garza (3 for 4) got things started with a hit, and Russell Moldenhauer (2 for 4) followed with a single to move Garza to third.

Then Phillip Bates singled to make it a 1-0 contest.

That brought in Casey Fletcher, who was a member of this spring’s University of Illinois team that advanced to the super regional for the first time. In his debut with the Slammers, Fletcher singled to drive in the second run.

Joliet (11-17) closed out the inning with another single, this time from Jack Cleary, to grab a 3-0 lead.

Rockford (18-9) got its first run in the fourth when Devin Rodriguez doubled, took third on a wild pitch and came home on a grounder by Greg Velazquez.

But the Slammers got that run back in the fifth when Garza smashed a solo shot

to right field. That proved to be Joliet’s only hit until the ninth inning.

The Aviators threatened in the seventh after loading the bases on a single, walk and hit batter, but reliever Kevin McNorton coaxed a force to get out of the jam. That was the only inning of work for McNorton, who has allowed just one earned run in his last 14 innings.

Rockford made things interesting by scoring twice in the eighth to pull to within 4-3. Dusty Robinson scored on a wild pitch, and Velazquez came home on a single by Anthony Renteria before reliever Navery Moore ended the threat by recording the last two outs.

In the Aviators’ ninth.

Moore hit the leadoff man before getting a force and a popup. But Robinson smacked a two-out double to right to score Brian Bistagne, and Devon Rodriguez (2 for 5) singled to right, and Robinson beat the throw home for the winner.

Things didn’t end well for the Slammers in the ninth after Adam Giacalone led off with a single. Max Casper looked as if he reached on a hit batter but was called out.

Then JD Williams appeared he might single to center, but Michael Hur made a diving catch.

Alfredo Rodriguez sent a deep shot to the left-field warning track that was caught for the last out.

Sharp said Earl might be developing into one of the best passers in the area, and the coach’s brother gets some of that credit.

“Jimmy Sharp is our passing coordinator,” Sharp said.

“I’m really pleased with how he is coaching kids up. We are light years ahead of where we were at this time last year.”

Of course, any offense is rendered less effective if the line does not do the job. The Hilltoppers might be in good shape there with four returning starters and plenty of size.

“We have guys back who are outstanding,” Dan Sharp said. “Tyler Witt, who is 6-4 and about 300 [pounds], is a two-year starter already.

Ze’Veyon Furcron is close to 300 now and moves real well.

We have a sophomore at right guard, Shane Raber, who is about 270. He’s going to be a good one. Ethan Emerson is playing at right tackle. He’s about 6-5, 240. He had a great first week of camp.”

Not only is that group being

counted on to provide a solid offensive line, it will rotate into the defensive line for defensive coordinator Jake Jaworski.

“Our defensive line should be huge,” Jaworski said. “Like last year, the guys from the offensive line will give us depth.

“Kenny Aguirre will be at defensive tackle, but he has the versatility to slide outside, too. He’s got D-I offers from [Mid-America Conference] schools, and Kentucky is on him. With him, Z [Furcron] Witt, Raber and Fleming in there, Zach Lukasik at defen-

sive end and Luke Mander coming back at an end after a year hiatus, we have some options. Mander has potential to help us.”

Lukasik will take over the place-kicking chores with big shoes to fill, as Brian Bravo graduated. Mander and Davis are starters on the JCA basketball team that finished above .500 last season for the first time in more than 30 years.

If depth matters, the linebacking corps and secondary should be productive.

“We have Brad Krisch back in the middle at linebacker,” Jaworski said of the third-year starter. “Jordan Bates played linebacker three or four games last year. Keaton Coleman and Andrew Hartsell are in the mix. We have some depth.

“I think I have 13 linebackers and 12 [defensive backs] on the roster. We had nothing like that the last two years.”

Jaworski said Bill Rotnicki will start at safety. Luke Phelan and Riley O’Donnell are corners who are back.

“We have probably eight kids who will be juniors who are competing for the last DB spot,” Jaworski said.

“I’m pretty excited. Some guys on the defensive side are showing great leadership. But we have a long way to go.”

JOLIET – Five of the past six Joliet Catholic football seasons ended in a loss to Montini.

For last season’s matchup against the Broncos in Round 2 of the Class 5A playoffs, Hilltoppers quarterback Cade Earl played at less than 100 percent.

He was just returning from a torn PCL suffered in a Week 7 loss to Nazareth.

Earl and his returning teammates have not forgotten the 27-13 defeat.

“Yeah, I’d like to play Montini again,” Earl said during last week’s University of St. Francis 7-on-7 Passing Tournament at Memorial Stadium.

If that matchup does happen in the playoffs, Montini’s defense will see a hopefully healthy and definitely improved Earl.

“I threw twice a week in the offseason with Don Beebe,” Earl said of the ex-Aurora Christian coach and former standout receiver in the NFL. “He’s a friend of my dad.

“My knee is all good now.

My footwork is better. I get back faster so I can read the defenses. I see a lot more of what is going on than I did previously. I can see what drops the [defensive backs] are making.”

Based on Day 1 of the 7-on-7, Earl is ready for a big senior season.

“Cade is healthy now,” JCA coach Dan Sharp said. “He spent a lot of time in the offseason on strength, conditioning and throwing. He is hitting guys in the hands, and his arm strength is outstanding.”

Of course, having wingbacks such as Michael Johnson and Harold Davis – both of whom are dual threats as runners and receivers – doesn’t hurt. Johnson filled in at quarterback in the “Hillcat” formation when Earl was injured last season.

“We have guys who can run and catch,” Sharp said.

“Michael Johnson and Harold Davis are doing a tremendous job. We have two big tight ends, too, in Colin O’Brien and Jake Kinsella.”

Saad’s new deal a key part of the team’s offseason moves

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Moments after the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup for the third time in six seasons, Stan Bowman went back to work.

The general manager of the Hawks found forward Brandon Saad on the ice at the United Center and made plans for more big parties in June. Saad is eligible for restricted free agency this summer, and his contract situation is a key part of the shortened offseason for the champions.

“I just talked to him right after we won,” Bowman said after the Hawks’ clinching victory Monday night over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6. “We gave a hug and said, ‘This is the first of many.

We’re going to win a lot together.’ He gave me a big hug and said, ‘Let’s go.’ He’s going to be here. I don’t think he’d want to leave after this scene here.”

The sixth NHL title in franchise history was the first time since 1938 the team wrapped up the champion-

ship at home, and it touched off a wild celebration in Chicago that featured honking horns, fireworks and streets clogged with fans all over the city. The players celebrated in their locker room at the United Center into early Tuesday morning.

“It is surreal every time.

And you don’t know when you’re going to get another chance,” captain Jonathan Toews said. “Some people kind of expect you to, and some other people don’t give you a shot. At the end of the day, all that matters is what we say and what we think in that room. We’ve got a group that believes.”

The Hawks are the first team to win three NHL titles in a six-year span since Detroit in 1997, 1998 and 2002. No one has been able to repeat since the Red Wings of ’97-98.

The Hawks brought the Stanley Cup to Wrigley Field on Tuesday night for a victory lap before the Cubs’ game against the Cleveland Indians, and there are plans for a parade Thursday followed by a rally at Soldier Field.

But some tough decisions

Jonathan Toews Blackhawks captain are coming up on the calendar. All those years of success come with a price, and the bills start to pile up again this summer.

The twin $84 million, eight-year contract extensions for Toews and Patrick Kane kick in for the 2015-16 season. Forward Marcus Kruger is eligible for restricted free agency, and defenseman Brent Seabrook’s contract expires after next season.

Even coach Joel Quenneville could be headed for a raise after Mike Babcock got a lucrative deal to take over in Toronto.

The NHL draft begins June 26 in Florida, and free agency starts July 1. The salary cap, expected to be about $71.5 million for next season,

likely will force the Hawks to shed some contracts through trades, but Bowman and company think they can keep the club in title contention for years to come.

“It’s a challenge,” Bowman said. “It’s a system we all play under, so we’ve got to find a way to make it work. It certainly is a credit to our leadership group on the team. And also my staff has done a fantastic job drafting and developing players. The only way you can make it work in this system is if you have young players you not only draft, but you develop.”

Two players who could be on the move for cap relief are forwards Patrick Sharp, who was acquired in a 2005 trade with the Flyers that helped spark the Hawks’ run of success, and Bryan Bickell.

Sharp, who turns 34 in December, slipped to 16 goals and 27 assists in 68 games after leading Hawks with 34 goals and 78 points in the previous season. Bickell, once a reliable scorer in the postseason, has only two goals and five assists in his past 29 playoff games.

JOLIET – The Joliet Park District wanted to attract softball tournaments to replace the major tournaments that no longer are coming to the Inwood Complex.

An early step in that direction will happen this weekend, as the Black Softball Circuit makes its Inwood debut with the ChiTown Classic BSC Midwest Championships.

“That circuit is predominantly out of the South, but they have tournaments in Michigan and other places as well,” said Josh Barry, athletic superintendent for the park district. “For sure, there will be five local teams playing in addition to teams coming from far away.”

The tournament will have men’s 50, men’s 40, recreational, co-ed and women’s divisions. Barry said there will be between 50 and 70 teams in all.

“There’s a Michigan vs.

Ohio state challenge in the co-ed division Friday night, and a home run derby at 8 p.m. will kick off the tournament,” Barry said.

There is no admission charge Friday. There will be a charge at the gate Saturday and Sunday.

“Teams will be playing for World Series rings, T-shirts, bids to upcoming tournaments, sponsor awards and MVP awards,” Barry said. “These tournaments tend to have tons of people come out and watch.”

The Black Softball Circuit is affiliated with the United States Specialty Sports Association. Barry said each team is allowed a maximum of four non-African-Americans on its roster.

The park district has added a co-ed overnight tournament to its schedule in July. The city tournament will be played in late July, as usual.

Santana powers Indians past Cubs

CHICAGO – Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer and an RBI double, Trevor Bauer pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Cubs, 6-0, on Tuesday night.

Santana also walked twice, and touted prospect Francisco Lindor contributed two hits in his first career start. Santana was just 3 for 28 with a home run and an RBI in his previous seven games.

The Cubs welcomed the Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup to Wrigley Field one night after the Hawks beat Tampa Bay, 2-0, for its third NHL title in the past six seasons. Cubs manager Joe Maddon hoisted the silver trophy over his head in front of the home dugout, Hawks captain Jonathan Toews threw a ceremonial first pitch, and the teams posed for a picture with the Cup on the pitcher’s mound.

Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta (6-5) walked six in five innings, and two of them scored on Santana’s drive that just cleared the wall in right in the third.

Marty’s back!

Certainly the biggest story on Day 1 of the Bears’ three-day mandatory minicamp at Halas Hall in Lake Forest was the appearance of Pro Bowl tight end Martellus Bennett.

Hey, Marty, what specifically do you think you’ve improved on in the offseason?

“Me? I look better, don’t I?” Are you bigger?

“I’m not bigger, I’m smaller. I mean, I don’t know how I look. I see myself all the time. You have your dog, and you see it all the time, and he don’t look that big to me, but when I see him next to another human being, he looks huge.”

Yes, believe it or not, I’ve missed the witty repartee.

Some find Bennett entertaining, and some find him exhausting as he flits from topic to topic without taking a breath or missing a beat.

Clearly, he views himself as an extremely bright entertainer and much smarter than the average tight end. At times, that’s easy to believe.

At other times, he gives you this: “I fit in everywhere I go. I’m like a dark-skinned chameleon.”

Does he not see the oxymoron there, or is he just riffing so fast even he can’t keep up?

Going into this season, Bennett is the third most important player on the Bears offense after Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, so his absence throughout the offseason until today was troubling.

Alshon Jeffery has stacked back-to-back excellent seasons as the No. 2 receiver, but can he be the No. 1 while Kevin White learns the ropes?

Much like what happened last season with Brandon Marshall struggling and eventually lost to injury, leading to Bennett’s first Pro Bowl, he is the one weapon Cutler can count on other than Forte.

Shining the spotlight even more brightly on the “dark-skinned chameleon” is the near total lack of depth behind him. Zach Miller is intriguing but has been an injury waiting to happen, and behind him is a bunch of guys. Bennett is smart enough to know that if he’s ever going to have contract leverage, the time is now.

“I think that everybody, even you guys, should be lobbying for new contracts,” he said. “If your performance is at a high level and you’re playing to a high level, then

“I mean, it’s just like being in an apartment and getting out of your lease because you want to find a better apartment or something better.

“It’s no different for me than it is for everybody else. I think every American, every person in the whole world, should be trying to get a new contract – and if they’re not, it’s silly.”

OK, it’s Marty-speak, but you can’t argue with some of the logic.

Coach John Fox refuses to get into the debate about who Bennett is or what he wants, but he did seem pleased to have him back on the field.

“I think he’s been looking at his iPad; that was evident,” Fox said.

“He’d even tell you that there’s nothing like practicing football to get in shape. He’s obviously been in an offseason-conditioning program.

But he handled himself pretty well today.”

The unknown with Bennett is he can be a bit much at times, and you have to wonder how it plays with all his teammates when he gets the spotlight focused on himself, something he will go out of his way to find.

According to Cutler, Bennett is a wanted man.

“I think he wanted to be here,” Cutler said. “All of us reached out to him at certain points throughout the offseason. He wanted to be here.

There is a business side to this, and he feels passionate about his position. So it is what it is. We’re happy he’s here right now and will continue working with him when he’s here.”

Is Bennett back to stay? He said he will be in Bourbonnais on time, but it’s hard to envision a scenario in which the Bears give him the new deal he wants.

Stay tuned, folks, because in Marty World, things have a way of changing with every breath he takes, and I for one hate to miss the show.

PITTSBURGH – Charlie Morton pitched seven innings to remain unbeaten since returning from hip surgery, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the White Sox, 3-0, on Tuesday night for their sixth straight win.

Morton (5-0) lowered his ERA to 1.62 after striking out three and walking one and not allowing a batter to reach third base. Mark Melancon worked a perfect ninth for his 21st save.

The Pirates have three straight shutouts and five overall during their six-game run, a stretch in which their starters have allowed all of one earned run.

Jose Quintana (3-7) gave up three runs in six innings and again received little support in his 100th career start. The Sox have dropped five straight.

The Sox managed all of two hits while getting blanked by Francisco Liriano on Monday night.

Father’s Day Dagwood Sandwich Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 1

¼ cup cider vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar Hefty pinch kosher salt ¼-inch thick slice red onion, separated into rings 2 slices soft deli-style rye bread 1 slice soft dark pumpernickel bread Light mayonnaise Deli mustard Thousand Island or Russian dressing 2 slices deli-sliced turkey

2 slices deli-sliced ham 2 slices provolone cheese 2 tablespoons sliced roasted red pepper, patted dry 2 large leaves romaine lettuce 2 slices pastrami 2 slices Swiss cheese 3 slices crisp-cooked bacon 2 slices tomato 2 tablespoons sliced banana peppers 2 large green olives In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine the vinegar, sugar and salt. Microwave on high until simmering, 30 to 45 seconds, then stir to dissolve the sugar. Add the

onion rings, stir, cover and set aside for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, arrange the 2 slices of rye and 1 slice of pumpernickel on the counter.

No, seriously. Guys generally are not complex creatures. And they don’t tend to ask for much. The occasional electronic gizmo (which they’d rather pick out for themselves anyway, thank you very much). Maybe tickets to a sports game. Perhaps somebody else to mow the lawn for once. Heck, even just a night off to play poker with his buddies.

See what I mean? Guys are easy. Which is why, no matter what sort of dad you have, chances are very good he would love somebody to make him a killer sandwich.

Which is to say, you can’t just make him a ham and cheese on white bread. Even basic guys like a great sandwich – emphasis on the great.

So we created a sandwich inspired by one of the most famous sandwich-loving dads: Dagwood Bumstead.

His version was more difficult to eat – and often twice the size of his head – but we tamed it only slightly. Serve with a pickle spear and a pile of crisp potato chips or french fries. second leaf of romaine, again folding to fit. Top with the tomato slices and banana peppers.

Drain the onions and pat dry with paper towels. Layer the onions over the sandwich and top with the second slice of rye. Cut the whole sandwich in half, placing a large toothpick topped with an olive into each side to hold it together.

South’s sequence indicates a balanced hand with a good 22 to 24 points. North raises to three no-trump, expecting his partner to waltz home.

However, it is preferable to have 15 points opposite 14, instead of 23 opposite 6. With the points more evenly divided, moving between the two hands is much easier.

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs. From where will two more winners come?

It will have to be diamonds – but how?

If declarer leads low to his jack, he wins when East holds the king and queen. But if South plays low to his nine, then low to his jack, he succeeds when East has the king-10 or queen-10, two holdings instead of one. That is clearly the right approach. Also, because declarer must lead diamonds twice from the dummy, he has to win the first trick with the heart queen. Then, after his diamond nine loses to West’s queen, South takes the next heart with dummy’s ace, plays a diamond to East’s 10 and his own jack, and claims. ******

• Check your mirrors.

Switch your rearview mirror to the “night” setting. This dims the reflection of headlights in the mirror.

• Clean your glass.

Scrub your front and rear windshields inside and outside to remove any streaks that may intensify glare. Make sure your mirrors and headlights are grime-free as well. Clean your eyeglasses, too. You can get sealed wipes to keep in the glove compartment or side pocket of the car, to make cleaning the inside of the windshield easy.

• Keep your eyes moving. Don’t lock your gaze on the center of the road.

Constantly scan the horizon for flashes that can signal oncoming traffic.

• Stay off the road at sunrise and sunset. Glare is usually the biggest issue for older drivers.

But glare from the sun is worse than headlight glare. It can be blinding.

After you reach the age of 50, an annual eye checkup is important.

That’s true even if you’re not bothered by nighttime glare.

My patients sometimes think a checkup will just discover changes in the eye that nothing can be done about – so why bother? In fact, some common problems that develop with age – such as glaucoma or cataracts – can be fixed completely.

That makes everything that requires vision – not just night driving – better.

Dear Dr. K: I am in my 60s. Over the last few years, my night vision has gotten worse, and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to drive at night.

What can I do to continue driving safely after dark?

Dear Reader: Night vision does start to decline as we get older, usually after age 50. Perhaps you’ve noticed more difficulty seeing in dim light, or maybe you’re more bothered by the glare from headlights.

Problems with night vision are the result of several changes to the eye that occur with aging. The first change involves the iris and pupil. As we age, the iris muscle weakens and becomes less responsive.

The iris muscle surrounds an empty, circular space: the pupil. The iris muscle can make the pupil wide or narrow. As the muscle weakens, the pupil shrinks and doesn’t open as wide to let light in.

After light passes through the pupil, it passes through the lens and then falls on the back of your eye, the retina.

As we age, the lens takes on a yellowish-brown tinge. This change allows less light to pass through to the retina.

Finally, with aging, the retina loses some rod cells.

These are the structures responsible for black-and-white night vision. All of these changes make it more difficult to see in dim light and darkness.

I spoke to my colleague, Dr. Eli Peli, a professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He suggested taking the following measures to keep night driving safe: • Make sure you can see well enough to drive.
