Will, Grundy communities dealing with rain, flooding

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILTON CENTER – Torrential rains washed over mostly southern portions of Will County on Monday – dumping more than three inches in just two hours in Wilton Township and leaving roadways flooded across small towns situated near rivers and waterways.

Meteorologist Gino Izzi with the National Weather Service in Romeoville said the biggest concern was Monday evening’s commute, noting additional rain would likely lead to immediate runoff and rapid flooding.

At about 7:33 p.m. Monday evening, a tornado warning was issued for south central Will County, and about 10 minutes later, the weather service said radar confirmed a storm system had produced a tornado that touched down near Manteno before the system continued eastward.

A flash flood warning was in effect for southern Will County for most of the day and late into the night, and more rain is in the forecast later in the week.

While rainfall totals were not record-breaking, Izzi said the rate at which the rain fell was “pretty fast.”

One inch fell over a 14-minute period in Peotone, while a little more than 3.25 inches fell at Wilton Center over a twohour period before noon, according to the weather service.

Peotone Police Chief Bill Mort said police responded Monday to reports of septic tank manhole covers bursting because of the flooding.

“There’s so much water with nowhere to go that it popped the lids,” Mort said.

He said some residential roadways were closed Monday, while major roadways – including Route 50 and Beecher Road – were reduced to one lane. Joliet Road near Conrad Avenue in Peotone, located near Peotone Elementary School, experienced flooding as well.

“You live near water, you get used to water,” Mort said.

“So if you see a car stalled in a middle of a pond and it’s on the road, I will tell you ‘Don’t follow them,’ ” Mort said.

On Monday, flooding occurred along River Street between Main Street and Route 102 in Wilmington, said Teresa Fisher, administrative assistant with the Wilmington Police Department. The intersection of Kankakee and Ryan streets near Wilmington Middle School also experienced a rise in water levels, but was not closed as of noon Monday.

Wilmington’s South Island Park – surrounded by the Kankakee River – was temporarily closed because of rising water levels. The park was closed over the weekend and may stay closed for the remainder of the week if rain continues, Fisher said.

Harold Damron, director for the Will County Emergency Management Agency, said he and his staff were in “monitoring mode” Monday, with more rain in the forecast this week. Municipalities handled flooding concerns without the need for the local EMA’s assistance.

“We’re seeing a lot of small issues here and there,” Damron said.

In Grundy County, the flood waters continued to rise from the weekend.

Heather Stanford of Morris had watched the water rise near her camper at Morris Rod and Gun Club since Saturday,

and decided to just stick it out, since flood waters covered the road to get home.

“Where my campsite is there is no standing water now,” she said Monday. “But earlier today, I watched it rise six inches in about 20 minutes before it went back down.”

Stanford said even if she made it out of the club safely, she was notified by her neighbors that Cambridge Drive, where she lives, also is covered by more than a foot of water.

Members and club staff hooked up as many campers as they could to trucks, and towed them to a dry area of the club to prevent further damage from the rising waters.

Farmers flooded out

While meteorologists were concerned with Monday evening’s commute, Will County farmers remain concerned about ponds that have formed in fields, threatening crops.

The rain has “nowhere to go” with the already-saturated ground, said Mark Schneidewind, manager for the Will County Farm Bureau.

“It’s certainly having an effect on the crop in the fields,” Schneidewind said. “For soybeans, once they go under, they die. They don’t like it wet and they die fast. Corn, that can be underwater for more than 12 hours ... but it’s still really stressing the crop. When it’s stressed, the production is going to be lower.”

Wheat and hay farmers also are concerned with the rain, he said. The moisture will leave those crops infested with mold and fungus, he said.

QUICK NEWS Lemont mayor will remain on Metra Board

LEMONT – Cook County Commissioners representing suburban Cook County and Southwest Suburban Metra District 3 have re-appointed Lemont Mayor Brian K. Reaves to the Metra Board to serve a full four-year term.

Reaves was first appointed to the Metra Board in October of 2013, serving out the remaining two years of an unexpired term, according to a news release.

Reaves was elected Lemont mayor in 2009 after having served as a village trustee and chairman of the Village Board’s Finance Committee since 2003.

Final suspect in Hickory Street killings faces life in prison

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It took jurors an hour and a half to convict the final suspect in the Hickory Street slayings.

Adam M. Landerman, 21, was charged with murdering Terrance Rankins and Eric Glover Jr. Adam M. on Jan. 9, 2013. Landerman He was found guilty Monday afternoon.

As Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak read the decision he had been found guilty of both murders, Landerman’s mouth opened as he sat leaning forward at the defense table.

As the jurors were individually polled to confirm the verdict, he raised his hand to his chin and lifted a finger to his lip.

Landerman faces mandatory life in prison.

Glover and Rankins were lured to Alisa Massaro’s house in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street in Joliet, where they expected to party with Massaro and Bethany McKee. But Joshua Miner and Landerman plotted with the women to rob Glover and Rankins for cigarette money. Miner strangled Rankins while Landerman strangled Glover.

“This defendant didn’t even bother learning their names.

Throughout [Landerman’s police interview] they’re ‘bald guy’ [Rankins] and ‘dreads’ [Glover],” Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Tricia McKenna said during closing arguments Monday.

Rankins’ father, Duval Rankins, said he was relieved the trials are over.

“Our families can rest at night knowing the killers who perpetuated this crime will never see daylight, except for Massaro,” Rankins said.

“There were constitutional issues with [prosecuting Massaro] that would cause her statements to be suppressed,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said. “It was nothing the officers did wrong, but she exercised her rights.

We applied leverage and got a conviction [for 10 years] on

her and could use that against the three who were the most responsible.”

No defense witnesses

Landerman’s attorneys did not call any witnesses after prosecutors rested their case Monday morning, and Landerman told Bertani-Tomczak he would waive his right to testify in his own defense.

“You understand you have

that right?” the judge asked.

“Yes, I do,” replied Landerman, who is the son of a Joliet police officer. “It’s my decision.”

Joliet Police Officer Bruce Trevillian testified Monday he saw someone through the upstairs window when he arrived at Massaro’s house the afternoon following the killings, but no one answered the door.

When police went in, they found Massaro coming to the front from the kitchen and asked her if anyone else was

inside.

“She just looked at us blankly. ... After asking a few more times, she said, ‘Josh was upstairs and Adam was downstairs,’ ” Trevillian said.

Trevillian and another officer then searched the basement with their guns drawn before hearing voices on the second floor, where they found Miner sitting on a couch smoking a cigarette with Glover’s and Rankins’ bodies on the floor.

Landerman was later found hiding in the basement behind some wood paneling, another officer testified earlier in the trial.

Defense attorney Edward Jaquays argued Landerman had not planned a robbery, but stopped Glover from jumping in when Miner and Rankins began fighting each other. After Landerman went into the next room to check on Rankins and discovered he was dead, he returned to find Miner strangling Glover, too.

But McKenna said Landerman told police they planned to rob Rankins before he arrived, and Landerman agreed to help Miner do that by “taking” Glover.

“They died exactly the same way at exactly the same time at the hands of two different people. ... That is evidence of a planned murder,” McKenna said.

Jaquays said Landerman and Miner never had “a meeting of the minds” and his client was scared by Miner’s actions.

“He’s only scared because he got caught. He took a lead role in the depravities these individuals were doing,” Glasgow told jurors in closing rebuttal.

Glasgow said Landerman’s “baby face is a mask for an abandoned and malignant heart.”

Union Station lease gets favorable nod

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet City Council members, including two former opponents, said Monday they likely would support a renewed lease with the banquet operator at Union Station.

The council will vote at a later date on a proposed 10year lease with Bussean Custom Caterers, which has operated out of the former train station since 2001.

The proposal got a favorable review from council members at their workshop meeting.

Councilman Jim McFarland, who said previous-

ly that the lease should be opened up for other proposals, said he now favors working out another agreement with Bussean.

“The only caveat that I would have is looking at a five-year lease rather than a 10-year lease,” McFarland said.

McFarland said he could support the lease after a market analysis done for the city by a private real estate broker. The analysis determined that a monthly lease of $9,651 “is more than fair to both parties,” City Manager Jim Hock said. Bussean has proposed paying $10,000 a month.

McFarland was alone in calling for the lease to be re-

duced to five years, although other council members said they could support a re-opener in the agreement allowing both parties to review the rent after five years.

An attorney for the banquet business said owner Jeffrey Bussean needs a 10-year lease to recoup investments planned for Union Station.

“He intends to invest at least a quarter-million dollars into the property, and those are investments that would stay with the property,” attorney George Schoenbeck told the council.

Hock said the lease, when completed, would be presented to a council committee before being brought back to

the full council for a vote.

On May 28, a combined council committee voted 3-2 to open up the lease to proposals from other banquet operators. At that meeting, Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said the lease should be brought to the full council as soon as possible and suggested a vote there would be different.

Councilman Larry Hug also voted at the committee meeting to seek other bidders, but said then that he could be persuaded otherwise if a market analysis showed $10,000 a month was a good rate for the city. Hug said Monday that he could support a renewal of Bussean’s lease.

Salvation Army store

The council meets again Tuesday for its regular meeting when it will consider a special use permit for a Salvation Army store.

The Salvation Army wants to move into the Century Tile store, which is still in business at 1395 S. Larkin Ave. The 22,000-square-foot building was built in 1984 for Frank’s Nursery & Crafts, which later went out of business.

Hock noted Monday that Salvation Army formerly had a store in downtown Joliet, but the store was displaced in the early 1990s by the construction of Harrah’s Casino and a parking deck.

Crest Hill City Council praises nurses for act of heroism

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Karol Summerfield was in tears as she watched Crest Hill city officials honor her two heroes.

Cindy Whitten and Lynne Rinke, two nurses who saved Summerfield’s life on a flight to Chicago, were given a certificate of recognition by the city of Crest Hill during the City Council meeting Monday night.

A tearful Summerfield hugged Whitten and Rinke as Mayor Ray Soliman praised their quick action. She drove from Montgomery through stormy weather to be at the City Council meeting.

She said the recognition was exactly what she wanted.

“I wanted them acknowledged and I wanted to know who they were. … Thank you so much,” Summerfield said.

The two nurses were recognized by Crest Hill for their quick actions, using their nursing skills to save a life, as well as their dedication to the nursing profession.

When Summerfield took a flight to Chicago from Phoenix, Arizona, on June 2, she drank some water that went into her lungs. After panicking and flailing, Whitten and Rinke jumped into action to help her breathe better and calm her down.

But Summerfield never learned their names after that flight until the past week when the two nurses came across The Herald-News article on her and they reached out to each other. Now the three are friends.

“We didn’t think it was

a big deal until the article came out,” Whitten said at the meeting.

While the nurses said they were from Joliet, they are from Crest Hill. They said it was easier to say they were from Joliet before because it’s a more well-known city.

Soliman said one of the most notable aspect of Summerfield’s story is that Whitten and Rinke almost didn’t get on the flight. The two nurses thought about switching flights until the one Summerfield was planning to ride had arrived.

“This was divine intervention, as far as I’m concerned, because these two ladies who almost got on to a different flight wouldn’t have been available when this incident took place,” Soliman said.

Each City Council member praised the nurses.

Ward 2 Alderwoman Barbara Sklare said the nurses were meant to be on the flight with Summerfield, and it was a big deal. Ward 3 Alderwoman Candi Thuringer said many times people have second thoughts on whether to jump in.

“Your training took over and you were able to give [Summerfield] another day to enjoy with her family and that is a gift from God,” Thuringer said.

8 Plainfield plans for help with ash trees

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The village of Plainfield is seeking help from other sources to help them get rid of Emerald Ash Borer-infested trees and stumps.

The Village Board Monday night approved a $100,000 contract to Arbor Tek Service Inc. to help the public works department remove the trees and stumps, a budgeted expense.

Trustees also approved intergovernmental cooperation agreements with the Plainfield Township and Wheatland Township road districts that will allow them to use township resources for tree removal services.

“The agreements [with the townships] are at no added cost to the taxpayer and it should increase and improve service,” Director of Public Works Allen Persons said.

The agreements allow the village to share resources with the townships for tree trimming and removal, snow removal, street sweeping, street light repair, pavement patching and shoulder stone installation.

However, the village has identified 1,800 of those trees, or more than half the trees remaining, Village Administrator Brian Murphy said.

“Some of them are just way too beyond our capabilities,” Murphy said.

That’s why the village is contracting out removal of the larger trees and stumps.

Persons told residents at a public meeting last week that the village’s goal is to take down 1,000 trees in the next two months. The department is trying to free up employees to work on ash tree removal, renting an additional chipper and splitting up work crews.

Trustees also approved an ordinance that increases the

administrative adjudication limit for certain village code violators from $250 to $500.

So anyone who commits village violations, including but not limited to vehicular standing, parking, automated law enforcement and building code violations, won’t need to head to the Will County Courthouse unless the ticket or fine is more than $500.

Plainfield Police legal counsel Joan Meyers said right now anyone with a citation under $250 have the option to either pay the citation or fight it at the municipal level.

“Currently, most of those proceedings go directly into the circuit court,” Meyers said. “Which, unfortunately or fortunately depending on your perspective, will leave a record for that individual.”

Also approved at the village meeting was an annexation agreement for a single-family home at 13318 S. River Crest Drive, an amended site plan review for Meijer Outlot Two with a Pet Supplies Plus store, and a letter of objection to the Will County Land Use Department in opposition to re-zoning at 23132 W. Main St. in unincorporated Plainfield Township.

Harrah’s Casino brought in a little more than $925,300 in tax revenue for the city of Joliet last month, while Hollywood Casino brought in about $700,700.

The number of gaming terminals statewide have steadily increased in the past few months after a proliferation of them beginning in September 2012 – when the industry went live statewide.

JOLIET – While the video gaming revenue continues to rise, Harrah’s Casino in Joliet saw the largest year-to-year revenue decline statewide in May. Harrah’s Casino in Joliet brought in $15.87 million last month, down 8.8 percent from the $17.4 million gained in May 2014, according to figures released earlier this month by the Illinois Gaming Board.

It was the most significant revenue decline experienced at Illinois’ 10 casinos.

At the same time, Hollywood Casino brought in almost $12 million last month, up from $11.4 million in May 2014, which represents a 4.7 percent increase.

In terms of revenue statewide, Harrah’s Casino in Joliet came in second, but remained far behind Des Plaines Rivers Casino’s $38.47 million. Hollywood ranked third. The Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin came in fourth, while Hollywood’s

past month, both statewide and in the region.

During May, the 20,349 gaming machines located throughout the state brought in $19.5 million for Illinois, and about $3.9 million for municipalities. In May 2014, the state’s 16,884 gaming terminals brought in $13.6 million for the state and $2.7 million for municipalities.

The industry remains viable income for Joliet businesses with video gaming. Joliet businesses brought in about $919,800 in May, while the city’s revenue share this past month was $45,990.

Report: Harrah’s May revenue decline largest in state

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When Kim Gonzalez was told her brother was shot to death, she realized her son might have been responsible.

“My [other] brother told me Lance was dead. When he said that, I was standing right in front of [Jason’s] dresser. I looked in the case and saw his gun was gone. I opened the dresser and all his clothes were gone,” Kim Gonzalez testified Monday. “I screamed ‘Adam, I think Jason killed Lance and we need to call the police.’ ” Jason Gonzalez, 29, is representing himself on murder charges from the Sept. 17, 2009, slaying of his uncle, Lance Goebel.

Kim Gonzalez called 911 and

was told to leave her apartment on Jackson Street in Morris for her safety. She noticed her car keys were missing from the cabinet where they were kept.

Paperwork from her glove box was there instead. Gonzalez told jurors she went across the street to the Morris Police Department.

“I told them, ‘I think my son stole my car and murdered my brother.’ They asked if I’d been drinking because it sounded so bizarre,” she testified Monday.

Will County Sheriff’s deputies met Kim Gonzalez in Morris later that night. They returned to her apartment, where she gave them a piece of paper she called “Jason’s hit list,” a handwritten note that included a police badge, hatchet, duct tape, a ski mask and a knife, she testified.

The plan’s first year was focused on “retention-driven” initiatives to improve student orientation, academic intervention, academic advising and awarding degrees. Next year’s focus will be on enrollment, Isaacs said.

JJC plans to strengthen its marketing and developmental education in the second year.

The college also will continue the projects began in the first year to improve retention rates.

Board Trustee Andy Mihelich said at the meeting the strategic enrollment plan is an initiative he’s always wanted to see the board pursue.

“I’m very pleased with the outcome so far, but I want to ensure that it even gets better,” he said.

Board Chair Jeff May said the plan is in response to JJC President Debra Daniels’ plan for larger numbers of college graduates. With the exception of enrollment, he said, the college has “made progress in many areas.”

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College is making progress on a three-year plan to improve the rates of student enrollment and retention, as well as degree and certificate earners.

While the college has not improved enrollment in the first year of its strategic enrollment management plan, it has improved the overall fallto-spring retention rate – otherwise known as a persistence – and its number of graduates.

The JJC Board of Trustees adopted the plan in May 2014.

According to an executive summary of the plan, higher education institutions nationwide are using strategic enrollment plans for improvement.

Yolanda Isaacs, interim academic affairs vice president, presented an update to the plan to JJC trustees during a May 26 workshop.

Under the plan, the threeyear data targets include boost-

ing student enrollment by 2.2 percent, increasing persistence by 1 percent, increasing the fall-to-fall retention rate by 1 percent and increasing the number of students who complete a certificate or a degree by 11.9 percent.

Isaacs showed trustees the results of the first year of the plan, with a 9.5 percent decrease in enrollment, a 2.6 percent increase in persistence and increases in the number of students with a certificate or degree by 3.3 percent and 7.3 percent, respectively.

Numbers for the fall-to-fall retention rate won’t be available until the fall semester.

Isaacs said the college continues to “struggle a little with enrollment,” but it is faring well compared to other colleges.

“What’s more important to remember for our first-year initiatives, we talked about retention, we talked about persistence, our initiatives were focused on those aspects,” she said.

Plainfield parks close to appointing new commissioner

The park board has scheduled a special meeting June 24 to interview three candidates in closed session for the position vacated by Janet Silosky, who resigned May 13.

Director Carlo Capalbo said the chosen candidate will be sworn in during open session after interviews are complete and the board discusses the candidates.

“The goal is to install a new commissioner at the end of our meeting,” Capalbo said.

Republican Committee puts forth name for Morris seat another alderman.

If the mayor’s next appointment also is voted down, he can appoint either of the two appointees he put before the council, and that person will serve as alderman until the next election for the seat.

Kopczick said Monday the next appointment will likely come on July 6.

Valdivia said although he thought the city could use his input, he wanted to move forward and focus on matters he’s involved in.

“I’ve been on many job interviews, so I know when I’m not getting the job,” Valdivia said.

Valdivia said he will continue concentrating on his role as Morris Community High School boys’ soccer head coach and working with the Morris YMCA. He’ll continue to be active in Morris and attend council meetings.

Republican Committee Chairman Michael Mattingly said Monday Valdivia’s decision was not the outcome he hoped for, but he understands his frustration.

“Mr. Valdivia is a fantastic person, and he would’ve made a wonderful alderman,” Mattingly said Monday.

MORRIS – A 22-year-old Morris woman was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence early Monday morning after she allegedly drove her vehicle into the front porch of a house.

Ashley N. Robinson also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane use, disobeying a stop sign and having no insurance, police said.

Robinson was found walking around the outside of the vehicle, Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said Monday, and asked for medical attention.

MORRIS – David Valdivia has withdrawn his name from consideration for the vacant Morris Second Ward Alderman seat.

In response, the Grundy County Republican Central Committee nominated Thomas Hougas for consider- Thomas ation by Mayor Hougas Richard Kopczick and the City Council to fill the vacant seat.

“I’ll take everything under consideration,” Kopczick said Monday.

Hougas said Monday he’s ready to serve the people of the Second Ward, listen to their concerns and address what may come before the City Council. Hougas said he looks forward to speaking with Kopczick in the near future.

Hougas is chairman of the Grundy County Real Estate Tax Board of Review, and previously served as a member of the Seneca Plan Commission.

The Republican Committee’s news release said Hougas has experience in business development, consulting and com-

puter applications, and he is a road construction consultant.

The seat opened May 4 when former Alderman Ken David Sereno resigned Valdivia after 34 years.

Valdivia received the Republican Central Committee’s nomination for consideration last Julian month after a Houston caucus.

On June 1, Kopczick tried to appoint former Alderman Julian Houston, who also is a Republican, to the open seat, but the appointment was voted down 3-4 by the City Council.

Houston lost the Republican primary election to Alderman Doug Hayse. Sereno reportedly requested the mayor appoint Houston to the seat upon his resignation.

According to Illinois Municipal Code 65 ILCS 5/3.1-1050, the mayor has 60 days to appoint someone to the seat, at which time the council has 30 days to vote on the appointment. If the appointment is voted down, the mayor has 30 days from the vote to appoint

As the gates of Heaven opened on June 14, 2015, the sweet sounds of a polka were to be heard. And as the Lord welcomed her Home, there was her beloved John waiting, and together they danced again. John and Pauline were married on January 14, 1956 and they have waited for this dance since January 17, 1997. Peacefully, Pauline has traded her many years of pain and her wheelchair for her dancing shoes once again.

She leaves behind the fondest memories with her only daughter, Jane Ann Klingler and her two cherished granddaughters, Jennifer Lynn and Janelle Marie Klingler.

She was blessed to enjoy her great-granddaughter for many years, and it was Pauline herself, in combining five generations of names, who said “How beautiful Jalina Rose will be!” Her Jalina Rose will dance in the sweet memories of her Nana forever.

Hospital group says Illinois could lease Healthcare.gov

CHICAGO – A hospital group in cash-strapped Illinois said the state might be able to set up a health insurance exchange at a lower cost by “leasing” the federal government’s technology, an option that could appeal to as many as 34 states where subsides could be jeopardized by an unfavorable U.S. Supreme Court decision.

In a memo written for Gov. Bruce Rauner and state lawmakers and released to The Associated Press, the Illinois Hospital Association said it anticipates the federal government “will be developing a leasing fee” for states to use HealthCare.gov as the backbone for their own insurance exchanges. It also lists an alternate possibility of renting an exchange system from another state that has its own, such as Connecticut or Kentucky.

President Barack Obama has said there is no backup plan if the Supreme Court strips federal subsidies from the law in Illinois and the 33 other states that haven’t created their own exchanges. The administration didn’t respond Monday to the AP’s requests for comment on the possibility of leasing HealthCare.gov.

state to promote what he refers to as his “turnaround agenda.” He criticized Madigan and Cullerton for driving the “Chicago machine,” and questioned whether the state’s Democratic legislators are less apt to serve their own voters over Chicago and the party leaders’ political interests, the Chicago Tribune reported.

During the appearances last week, Rauner and the Illinois Republican Party also singled out more than a dozen Democratic state senators and representatives, claiming they side with Democratic leaders over local voters.

Rep. Brandon Phelps of Harrisburg, another Democratic lawmaker who Rauner claimed was siding with party leaders, expressed frustration over the governor’s initial budget-cutting plans, which include shutting down the Hardin County Work Camp, a major employer in southeastern Illinois.

As next year’s election approaches, Phelps already is working to combat Rauner’s efforts to encourage voters not to support Democrats, he said.

“He’s got a lot of money. A lot of people know what he’s going to do,” Phelps said of the governor. “I’ve got the soldiers and boots on the ground that can go door to door. I can’t compete with tens of millions of dollars against me, and everybody knows that. But no one is going to outwork me.”

Wind, rain cause flooding, Chicago flight cancellations

CHICAGO – Storms sweeping across northern Illinois prompted a tornado warning, forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights at Chicago’s airports and caused flooding.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for north central and northeast Illinois as thunderstorms were forecast to cross the area through Monday evening. Forecasters said the storms could dump up to two inches of rain per hour at times.

A brief tornado warning for the metro-Chicago area activated warning sirens and prompted downtown office buildings to send tenants into hallways away

from windows.

Standing water forced the closing of the Eisenhower Expressway and the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line “L’’ on the city’s West Side.

The Chicago Department of Aviation was reporting delays of up 30 minutes at O’Hare International Airport, where more than 430 flights were canceled. Delays of 35 minutes and the cancellation of 25 flights were reported at Midway International Airport.

Missouri seeks death for man convicted in 6 Illinois deaths

ST. LOUIS – Missouri prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for a 35-year-old man accused in the killing of a couple from Arkansas who is already serving life sentences in six slayings in Illinois.

Prosecutors in Jefferson County south of St. Louis filed notice on June 8 of their intent to press for Nicholas Sheley’s execution if he’s convicted in the Festus, Missouri, killings of Jill and Tom Estes of Sherwood, Arkansas. Police said the couple was attacked outside

a hotel after leaving a graduation party in 2008. Sheley is accused of loading their bodies into a pickup truck belonging to another of his victims and dumping the bodies near a gas station a short distance away.

Sheley is serving six life sentences at Pontiac Correctional Center for a string of killings that began in his Illinois hometown of Sterling. Four victims whose bodies had been bludgeoned with a hammer were found in a Rock Falls apartment. They ranged in age from 2 years to 29. The other victims were a 65-year-old man whose body was found behind a Galesburg grocery store in northwestern Illinois and a 93-year-old man killed in Sterling.

In February, Sheley was extradited to Missouri where, unlike in Illinois, offenders can be sentenced to death.

Public defender David Kenyon, one of two St. Louis-based attorneys appointed to represent Sheley, declined comment Monday. An arraignment is scheduled for July 6.

Hoffman Estates girl, 5, dies after being hit by car

HOFFMAN ESTATES – Authorities say a 5-year-old girl has died after being struck by a vehicle when she walked onto a roadway.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office on Sunday said Aleeza Haq of Glendale Heights died in the Hoffman Estates accident Saturday. The medical examiner said she died of multiple injuries and ruled her death an accident.

Aleeza’s mother, Sarah Hussaini, said the last thing her daughter said was “Mama.” She said her daughter was smiling.

Hoffman Estates police said the girl was struck by a 52-year-old Hoffman Estates motorist. She died at a hospital in Park Ridge.

Teddy bears and flowers were left at the crash scene.

Police said they’re investigating the death but don’t expect to issue any citations.

By STEVE PEOPLES and BRENDAN FARRINGTON The Associated Press MIAMI – Vowing to win the Republican presidential nomination on his own merits, Jeb Bush launched a White House bid months in the making Monday with a promise to stay true to his beliefs – easier said than done in a bristling Jeb Bush primary contest where his conservative credentials will be sharply challenged.

“Not a one of us deserves the job by right of resume, party, seniority, family, or family narrative. It’s nobody’s turn,” Bush said, confronting critics who suggest he simply seeks to inherit the office already held by his father and brother. “It’s everybody’s test, and it’s wide open – exactly as a contest for president should be.”

Bush sought to turn the prime argument against his candidacy on its head, casting himself as the true Washington outsider while lashing out at competitors in both parties as being part of the problem.

He opened his campaign at a rally near his south Florida home at Miami Dade College, an institution with a large and diverse student body that symbolizes the nation he seeks to lead.

“The presidency should not be passed on from one liberal to the next,” he declared in a jab at Democratic favorite Hillary Rodham Clinton.

And he said: “We are not going to clean up the mess in Washington by electing the people who either helped create it or have proven incapable of fixing it.”

That was an indirect but unmistakable swipe at Republican presidential rivals in the Senate. Among them is his political protege, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who welcomed Bush into the 2016 contest ear-

To the Editor: I was going through the Internet news section on my computer this morning, and what do I find? A story about Chris Christy and softball and another one about Dennis Hastert.

But nothing about any of the Democrats running for president or nothing on the Clintons’ Foundation, IRS, hacking by China, release of Gitmo prisoners (pro and cons), Iran’s support of Islamic terrorist, Russia ready to invade the Ukraine or the war on policemen in Baltimore.

Now, we are really seeing multimedia bias at its best. And they tell me I’m biased and cynical. I know the Constitution supports freedom of the press, but it really should read “fair and balanced freedom of the press.”

Rauner taking budget fights out of Springfield Gov. Bruce Rauner gave rip-roaring speeches in several Democratic legislative districts last week denouncing the state’s Democratic leadership. All of his visits were accompanied by Illinois Republican Party news releases bashing area Democratic legislators for being in the back pockets of House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton.

Some are warning that this tour is only making it more difficult to cut a budget deal before the government shuts down. By belittling legislators in front of their constituents, those lawmakers are going to get their backs up and switch to a campaign war footing just as Rauner appears to be doing.

When that happens, they won’t want to cooperate.

But if you look at the numbers, Rauner did quite well in all of those districts.

He won 15 of the current 39 Democratic Senate districts last year, some by quite a lot. Despite what you may read, many of the Democratic-drawn districts are not prohibitively partisan.

Then add in all the Republican Senate districts he won,

and Rauner took 35 Senate districts to then-Gov. Pat Quinn’s 23, and came very close to tying Quinn in one other (Sen. Linda Holmes). I used Scott Kennedy’s indispensable IllinoisElectionData.com website to compile these numbers.

The governor was in Democratic Sen. Gary Forby’s district last week. Rauner stomped Quinn in Forby’s deep southern Illinois turf, 62-31.

That same day, Rauner appeared in the Metro East, an area represented by Democratic Sens. Bill Haine and James Clayborne. Rauner won both of those districts as well, 56-38 and 48-47.5, respectively.

Rauner also stopped in Democratic Rep. Mike Smiddy’s Quad Cities area district, which he won last year, 55-41.

The Rauner folks most likely are looking at these results and thinking their guy can help take out some of those Democrats next year.

Yet, all of those Democrats have withstood Republican victories at the top of the ticket in past years. Forby, who was first elected to the House 14 years ago, is a prime example. The House and Sen-

Partisanship is only one consideration when drawing district maps. Most are drawn because the incumbents or certain types of candidates can win them. Forby is a wildly pro-coal social conservative and NRA poster boy and, simply put, his people love him. There’s a good reason why Rauner used a recording of Forby (without Forby’s permission, of course) attacking Quinn in a campaign robocall.

Presidential years also are quite different from “off” years, when governors run.

Next year will be tougher to defeat these legislators because Democrats tend to vote in much higher numbers during presidential elections.

Even so, the Democrats do know next year will be unlike

any other because Rauner’s pledge to spend $20 million during the campaign targeting 20 Democrats for defeat means they will not have a financial advantage for the first time in decades.

Rauner’s $20 million pledge first was reported by Champaign News-Gazette reporter Tom Kacich. A prospective Republican candidate told Kacich that Rauner let him in on the secret while asking him to run.

If the governor follows through, however, he might want to rethink using his recently created independent expenditure PAC “Turnaround Illinois.”

Why? State law prohibits coordination between independent expenditure committees and candidates.

Promising to spend a million bucks each on 20 people to lure candidates into the race might very well be deemed coordination.

There are ways around all of this, of course. Money always finds a way.

Candidates could bust the state’s contribution caps on their own by contributing at least $100,000 to their cam-

paign funds (perhaps even by taking out loans from certain wealthy individuals), which then would allow Rauner and his pals to give as much money to the candidates as they desired. Rauner also could funnel money through the state party, which then could spend on behalf of the candidates. Or he could funnel his cash through a “dark money” committee.

Whatever the case, the House Democrats recently distributed a guide to some of their members about how to deal with Republican “trackers” – people who are paid to follow politicians around with video cameras and catch them in awkward positions.

Democrats are being advised to stick strictly to their “middle class” talking points and avoid any sort of conflict, among other things.

The Democrats say they feel fairly confident about their odds, but obviously they’re worried about what’s about to hit them.

Blackhawks take Stanley Cup title STANLEY CUP CHAMPS

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Showing off their grit and determination, the Blackhawks finally put away the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup Final.

The city of broad shoulders, strong enough to carry the silver trophy once again. A Windy City party 77 years in the making.

Duncan Keith scored in the second period and directed a dominant defense that shut down Tampa Bay’s high-scoring attack, and the Hawks beat the Lightning, 2-0, in Game 6 on Monday night for their third NHL title in the past six seasons.

Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist, helping the Hawks clinch the Cup on home ice for the first time since 1938. Corey Crawford, who was pulled from Chicago’s first-round series against Nashville, had 25 saves in his fifth career playoff shutout.

Keith was a unanimous selection for the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP after he finished with 21 points while playing over 700 minutes in a grueling postseason.

It was an appropriate conclusion to a series full of near misses and close calls that had fans in Chicago and Tampa Bay on the edge of their seats for almost two weeks. It was only the second final to begin with five one-goal games, and no team enjoyed a two-goal advantage until an open Kane buried a perfect pass from Brad Richards at 14:46 of the third.

It was Kane’s first goal of the final, and it touched off a wild celebration by the frenzied crowd of 22,424, who broke out more chants of “We want the Cup! We want the Cup!” “I’d say you have a dynasty,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told the cheering crowd as he presented the trophy to the grinning Hawks.

Ben Bishop kept the Lightning in the game with 30 saves, fighting through some sort of lower-body injury that kept him out of Game 4. Led

by Bishop and big defenseman Victor Hedman, the Lightning allowed just 13 goals in the series, but it wasn’t enough against the unflappable Hawks.

Tampa Bay star Steven Stamkos finished the playoffs with an eightgame scoring drought that likely will chase him into the offseason. He rung the inside of the crossbar on a near miss at 7:50 of the first and was stoned

by Crawford on a breakaway 58 seconds into the middle period.

Keith got a nice pass from Kane in the middle and shot it around Tampa Bay center Cedric Paquette. Bishop stopped his first try, but Keith kept skating past Paquette and flipped in the rebound at 17:13.

Keith then skated with his arms out and yelled before he was mobbed by his teammates near the boards.

Crawford threw his gloves into the air as the final seconds ticked off, and a sea of red and black that braved a dangerous line of thunderstorms to pack the United Center erupted in pure joy. Kane pumped his right arm as Crawford approached for a big hug, and the goaltender then wrapped his arms around Keith after they helped limit the league’s highest-scoring

team in the regular season to 10 goals in the final.

It was the first Stanley Cup for Kimmo Timonen, who has said he plans to retire. The 40-year-old defenseman was acquired in a trade with Philadelphia in February after he missed the start of the season while recovering from blood clots in his leg and lungs.

After captain Jonathan Toews got the trophy from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, he handed it right to Timonen, who proudly hoisted it into the air.

The Lightning had Nikita Kucherov back in the lineup after the forward crashed into the Chicago goal during the Hawks’ 2-1 victory Saturday night and missed the last part of Game 5. But Tampa Bay’s high-scoring triplets line never got untracked in the final.

Duchene thrilled to begin pro career with A’s JCA’s Dalesandro sticking with Purdue

VIEWS Dick Goss Kevin Duchene had one bad game this season as the No. 1 starter for the University of Illinois.

Unfortunately, it came in an NCAA super regional game against defending national champion Vanderbilt. The junior left-hander pitched four innings and allowed seven runs, four earned, in a game the Illini lost, 13-0.

A couple days later, the Oakland Athletics selected the Joliet Catholic graduate in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

“From coming up short against Vanderbilt, then to be drafted in the fifth round by Oakland, it went from really low to really high,” Duchene said.

“I was ecstatic to get drafted in the fifth round. I got a call a little while earlier saying they [the A’s] were going to take me then. I was in my living room with four or five teammates and friends.

I can’t really put into words how it felt. My friends kind of dog-piled me on the couch. It was awesome, one moment I will never forget.”

Duchene, who signed a five-year contract Friday and flew to Arizona on Monday to begin throwing at what he termed “a sort of mini-camp,” went 11-2 this season with a 1.75 ERA. He allowed 89 hits, struck out 88 and walked 18 in 1022⁄3 innings. If only it had ended better.

“The Vanderbilt game was hard,” he said. “That was the first time I actually felt like I got beat. I was 24-4 in college, and the other three losses were 1-0, 2-0 and 3-0 games.

“But they got me good. I hate to go out from my college career with that game. But at the same time, as a pitcher you have to have a short memory. I don’t have many regrets about anything.”

Duchene’s teammate, junior left-hander Tyler Jay from Lemont, was the sixth overall pick in the draft, the Minnesota Twins’ first-round selection. Jay pitched almost

A couple days later, the Oakland A’s made Duchene their fifth-round draft pick. exclusively in relief, and in Duchene’s estimation, he proved he was the best college lefty in the nation.

“I told Tyler there is no other lefty in the country as good as him when I dropped him off at the airport last summer,” Duchene said. “I could go on and on about him.”

Jay’s fastball has been clocked in the 95-97 mph range. Duchene cannot match that velocity, but he can pitch.

TRUE PITCHER

“A writer wrote a story about me last summer when I was in the Cape Cop League that said I had 75 to 93 [mph] covered,” Duchene said.

“With my change, curve, two-seamer, slider and cut fastball that I have now, I can cover everything.

“I didn’t throw all that hard when I was younger. I credit what I learned in high school. I understood the game before my tools came, which has benefited me. I take a lot of pride in knowing I’m a pitcher, not just a thrower.”

Duchene traveled to Arizona not knowing where the A’s would send him this summer and whether he would start or relieve. He’ll throw a couple bullpen sessions there, after which the decisions will be made. But they did indicate that with 103 innings at Illinois under his belt, he would not be pushed.

“A scout mentioned that I might throw only 20 to 35 innings this summer,” he said.

“I’m the first college pitcher drafted by the A’s this year.

They want to make sure I’m in good health for upcoming seasons. No World Series is ever won in a short season of A ball.”

The A’s were not Duchene’s favorite team growing up – no one could compete against the Cubs – but he did admire the A’s.

“I loved watching the A’s with Barry Zito, Mark Mulder and those guys,” he said. “They always have been underdogs. I’m honored to be able to chase my dream with that organization.

“Being drafted is one of the things I’ve been working toward since I was at Joliet Catholic. It’s a surreal feeling.

But now it’s time to get down to some hard work.”

FAMILIARITY HELPS

Between the amateur baseball Duchene has played all over the country, to his experiences at Illinois, he will feel a sense of familiarity as he begins his trek through Oakland’s system.

“There are so many connections you make in amateur ball,” he said. “That helps out a lot. This is a big step in everyone’s life. To play with and against guys you are familiar with makes it more

JOLIET – The versatility of Joliet Catholic’s Nick Dalesandro is a rarity.

Put him on the mound, behind the plate or in just about any other position, and he is a quality baseball player.

The Detroit Tigers selected Dalesandro as a catcher in the 33rd round of last week’s Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

However, he said he will not sign with the Tigers. Instead, he will attend Purdue University, with whom he signed a national letter of intent.

“I’m definitely going to school,” Dalesandro said.

“In three years, I might be drafted again, and we’ll see where that leads.”

Dalesandro said he may fill multiple roles with the Boilermakers.

“I’ll likely catch, but they said I may be a starter on the mound,” he said.

“There’s a chance I might even be a [full-time] pitcher fun, maybe not as hard. I hope I can see those guys the next 10 to 15 years.”

For example, Mike Foltynewicz, now starting with the Atlanta Braves, is slightly older but was at Minooka when Duchene was at JCA. “Folty looks like he is in it for the long haul,” Duchene said.

Duchene faced Carlos Correa, recently promoted to the parent Houston Astros, in amateur competition several years ago and struck him out four times.

“Carlos Correa making his major-league debut at 20 – remarkable,” Duchene said.

“A kid who signed out of high school getting there that quick is borderline ridiculous.”

Among the college pitchers who were drafted and Duchene knows are Louis-

some day. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win.”

Dalesandro hit .388 (45 for 116) for JCA this spring with seven doubles, three triples, two home runs, 31 RBIs and 32 runs scored. He pitched 39 innings and was 3-0 with one save and a 0.89 ERA, allowing 24 hits and nine walks while striking out 55.

Some observers felt Dalesandro might go higher than he did in the draft.

“I thought I maybe would go a little bit higher,” he said. “But school, obviously, is the best option for me.”

The proximity of West Lafayette, Indiana, played into his decision to sign a letter of intent with Purdue.

“It’s two hours from home, so my parents will get to see me play,” he said.

“That’s one of the reasons I chose Purdue in the first place.”

When his playing days are over, Dalesandro said he might like to be a head coach. “But first, I want to go play baseball,” he said. ville’s Kyle Funkhouser, an Oak Forest graduate who was drafted by the Dodgers; and Vanderbilt’s Carson Fulmer, the White Sox’s No. 1 pick who was the winning pitcher in the 13-0 win over the Illini.

Sox fans will be interested in Duchene’s comments.

“College pitchers who throw hard are so coveted,” he said. “Carson Fulmer will be the national pitcher of the year. That kid is the real deal.

He has a great feel for all his pitches.”

As for Duchene, he won’t wow anyone on the radar gun.

But neither did lefties such as Mark Buehrle and Tom Glavine. When you understand pitching, as Duchene does, you have a shot.

Burk’s teams posted a 685-201 record in her 30-year career as Lockport’s softball coach as the Porters grew into one of the state’s most respected programs under her guidance. Lockport won a state title in 1997 under her, finished second in 1987 and 1990, and was third in 1999.

Gibson starred in football and basketball at Romeoville and went on to Notre Dame, where he was a four-year football standout and continued playing basketball there for a

while. He was the USA Today Defensive Player of the Year in 1989 at Romeoville and played nine years in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals. He finished his NFL career with 108 tackles, 17.5 sacks and one interception.

Ruettiger, who attended Providence Catholic and is a veteran area wrestling coach, was the first four-time state wrestling champion in Illinois history. He won the Class A title at 98 pounds in 1978, 112 pounds in 1979, 119 in 1980 and 126 in 1981.

Sullivan was the longtime men’s basketball coach, ath-

letic director and athletics chairman at University of St. Francis. He was a basketball and baseball player at Joliet Catholic and Lewis, and coached basketball at Providence before landing at USF in 1976.

Sullivan not only won more than 500 games as a coach, but his players graduated. He always stressed the value of education, and he is highly respected as a speaker.

JJC’s Condon named NJCAA D-III Player of Year

Joliet Junior College’s T.J Condon, a Minooka graduate, was named the NJCAA Division III Player of the Year after leading the Wolves to a national runner-up finish.

roesterle@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Last year, as a freshman, Minooka graduate T.J. Condon earned first-team National Junior College Athletic Association first-team All-America honors for Joliet Junior College as well as winning a Gold Glove award as a catcher.

This year was, surprisingly, even better. All he did was repeat as a first-team All-American, becoming the Wolves’ first two-time firstteam All-American since fellow Minooka graduate Joe Stover in 2007 and 2008, in helping lead JJC to a national runner-up finish. To top it off, he was named as the NJCAA Division III Player of the Year.

Ranking in the top 10 in a number of offensive categories, Condon demonstrated his ability to hit the ball and hit it far. The sophomore led the nation with 24 doubles, nine triples and was fifth in home runs with 10, which translated into a .738 slugging percentage – the seventh highest in the country. Condon led the D-III ranks with 75 RBIs, which complemented the fifth-most hits (83). He finished with a .395 batting average and a .455

From behind home plate, Condon proved to be one of the top defensive catchers in the land. He ranked third in runners caught stealing, throwing out 24 of 62 for a .387 caught stealing percentage. Condon accumulated 202 putouts and 44 assists while committing three errors for a .988 fielding percentage.

“I am totally shocked to get this award,” Condon said. “It’s

amazing, really. I am glad I got it.

“I couldn’t have done what I have done without coach [Wayne] King and [assistant] coach [Gregg] Braun. They have helped me become a better person, both on and off the field. My confidence level is pretty high, and it wouldn’t be where it is without those coaches.”

It’s a two-way street when it comes to the admiration.

“T.J. is as big a part of the team’s success this year as it comes,” said Braun, who works with the pitchers and catchers. “Defensively, he shut down other teams’ running games; and offensively, he had 75 RBIs, which is second in JJC history. He did everything. He was truly a leader, from the dugout to in the field to at the plate.

“He and I work together, we talk between innings. If I need

him to go to the mound and calm a pitcher down, he can do that. It’s like having a third coach on the field. We’ve been blessed to have him for the last two years. Plus, he is just a workhorse. When we were in North Carolina for the World Series, I got up in the morning, and he was outside, running laps around the hotel to get his running work in.”

Despite all the accolades he earned in his freshman year, he felt the season was incomplete, as the Wolves did not reach the NJCAA World Series.

This year, JJC finished as the runner-up, and the individual acclaim put the icing on an already sizable cake for Condon.

“I was really glad about how the team did this year,” he said. “The overall goal is to win it all, and we got just about as close as you can. It was great to get to go to the national tournament and have a chance to play for the title. That’s about all you can ask.”

The season didn’t start out as one that had the earmarks of a national contender for the Wolves, as they struggled out of the gate, winning just one of their first 10 games and going 3-12 through 15 games.

The class will be inducted Friday evening during a private ceremony in the Hall of Fame room at Silver Cross Field. Immediately following, at about 6:30 p.m., the five honorees will be presented on the field to the crowd gathering for the Slammers’ game against

the River City Rascals.

Bromberek accomplished one of the most amazing and memorable feats in IHSA track and field history. In the 2000 Class AA state meet, he won the long jump, the 200and 400-meter dashes, and came within .01 of a second of winning the 100. By himself, he carried Lemont to a second-place finish behind Elmhurst York as he scored all 38 of the Indians’ points.

LeBron confident Cavs can hold off Golden State, force Game 7

By TOM WITHERS The Associated Press CLEVELAND – Wearing a leather Cavaliers cap and a steely look, LeBron James used his postgame platform to proclaim that he’s “the best player in the world.”

It’s not as if his greatness was in dispute after five dominant games of these NBA Finals. James has shown no one challenges his on-court supremacy. However, while his game and confidence soar, James knows he must do even more, if possible, to stop Cleveland’s inspiring postseason from crashing.

“I’ve got to be better,” James said.

Even that might not be enough.

Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors are one win from a golden trophy.

Up, 3-2, in a scintillating se-

ries loaded with subplots and strategy, the Warriors can win their first title since 1975 with a win Tuesday night in Game 6.

James didn’t blink after Game 5 when he declared he was not only the top player on seven continents, but prepared to raise his game.

“We’ve got enough to win it,” he said. “I feel confident.”

But so are the Warriors, and James’ bravado – and his preposterous postseason statistics aside – won’t matter if Curry, who found his stroke a few games back in Quicken Loans Arena, shoots the way he did in Sunday night’s 10491 win.

Curry scored 17 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter, when he answered every one of James’ big baskets with stunning buckets of his own as the game’s two biggest stars played a finals version of “H-O-R-S-E” to the delight of millions of TV

viewers and a sonic crowd inside Oracle Arena.

Curry showed why he was the league’s MVP this season, setting the Warriors up to take home the shimmering Larry O’Brien Trophy. Curry was treated for dehydration after Game 5, but he’s expected to be fully recovered as the Warriors try to finish the Cavs.

“We fought hard all year and put ourselves in good position now to go to Cleveland and hopefully close it out,” Curry said. “We’re confident.”

James stands in Golden State’s way, and clearly intends to do everything in his power to force Game 7. It’s unfathomable to think James can give any more than he already has, but he has no choice.

“I don’t put a ceiling on what I’m capable of doing,” he said. “I know I’m shouldering a lot of the burden, but it is what it is.”

PITTSBURGH – Francisco Liriano allowed two singles in eight dominant innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates ran their winning streak to five with an 11-0 romp Monday night over the White Sox. Liriano (4-5) struck out 12 and walked one as Pittsburgh put together its second straight shutout and fourth in its last five games.

Josh Harrison and Starling Marte each had four of Pittsburgh’s season-high 18 hits.

Marte, Jung Ho Kang and Francisco Cervelli all drove in two runs apiece as the Pirates posted their most lopsided win of the year.

Route 59, for a “Fill the Boot” fundraiser May 9 for the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance’s burn camp called “Camp I Am Me.” They collected $2,795, and the Plainfield Fire Department added $1,205 to donate a total of $4,000 to the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance for “Camp I Am Me.” “Camp I Am Me” is for children and teens who have experienced a burn injury. Through the generosity of donations, supporters and volunteers, the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance is able to provide this summer camp experience at no cost.

cardiovascular system is accessed through an artery in the groin. The blockage in Bonsignore’s arteries made them too small to accommodate a catheter.

But Dr. Mark Goodwin, medical director of Edward Heart Hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab and interventional cardiologist with Midwest Heart-Advocate Medical Group, determined she was a candidate for transcaval TAVR. In the transcaval approach, the doctor threads a guide wire through a vein, rather than an artery, in the leg. The wire and a small catheter travel toward the abdominal area, where the catheter creates a passageway between the body’s now-dilated main vein and main artery. This makes it possible for a sheath containing the new valve to pass to the heart.

• Do thigh-strengthening exercises.

If her knee pain is constant, she may need to stop playing sports for a while, or wear a cast or brace for several weeks.

Surgery is rarely needed.

Talk to your daughter’s gymnastics coach.

Check to see your daughter is using sports equipment appropriately and has proper technique. Her coach also may be able to modify the intensity of her training. Ask your daughter’s pediatrician if it would be valuable for a physical therapist to teach your daughter some exercises to strengthen the leg muscle.

Dear Dr. K: My 12-yearold daughter has been doing gymnastics for years. Lately she’s complained about pain in her knee. Her doctor says it’s Osgood-Schlatter disease. How serious is this?

Dear Reader: This is a case where the name makes the condition sound worse than it is.

Osgood-Schlatter disease is a common, temporary condition. It causes knee pain in older children and teenagers, especially those who play sports.

About 20 percent of children who play sports develop this condition.

It starts when a child’s growth spurt starts, and major symptoms typically go away at the end of a teenager’s growth spurt.

The condition is basically an “overuse injury.” Children and teens who participate in activities that require a lot of jumping and bending -- hockey, basketball, soccer, skating, gymnastics or ballet -- are more likely to develop Osgood-Schlatter disease.

In these activities, the quadriceps muscle in the front of the thigh pulls tightly against the kneecap and the kneecap’s anchor, the patellar tendon. Repeated pulling results in pain, swelling, redness and a bony bump in the raised area at the top of the tibia (shinbone). That’s where the patellar tendon attaches to the bone. This part of the knee is particularly vulnerable to stress and injury during the teenage growth spurt.

Dear Abby: My 17-year-old stepdaughter, “Audra,” got her driver’s license a few months ago and has started pressuring us to put her on our car insurance. When we told her we can’t afford it, and if she wants to be on the insurance she has to get a job and pay for it, she had a temper tantrum.

About a month ago, my husband wanted her to go to the store for him. We live in a rural area and everything is some distance away. After she left, he asked me if I was mad that he let her take the car. I told him I thought he was asking for trouble sending her out with no car insurance. He said, “But she wants to drive so badly.” My husband now wants me to let her take me shopping and bring along our two small kids.

If Audra gets into an accident, we could be sued for everything we have. No one is a great driver when they first start driving, but she is a beginner without insurance. I have considered calling the police and telling them she’s driving without insurance. What do I do? –
