Joliet city manager seeks $1.4M budget increase Nonunion staff would get first pay hike since ’08

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Nonunion city personnel would receive a 2 percent salary increase – their first since 2008 – under a budget amendment proposed by City Manager Jim Hock.

Hock intends to request Monday a $1.4 million increase in the 2014 budget to fund the raises, as well as cover the city’s new tree planting program, snow-related expenses and other items from the City Council.

The 2 percent increase for nonunion positions would be effective in July. In total, the raises will cost $140,000.

“They have not had a wage increase since 2008, while the bargaining units have had four years with 4 percent increases during the same time period,” Hock said in a statement to the council.

The amendment also would include a $40,000 compensation study of nonunion posi-

tions to create a competitive merit pay plan.

A new deputy city manager/human resources director would be created under the amendment. The $150,000 position would be responsible for human resources and customer relations, including establishing a 311 customer call center.

Hock also is proposing $150,000 for the city’s forestry planting program to help replace some of the thousands of parkway trees lost to the emerald ash borer.

The largest portion of the budget amendment – $955,000 – is devoted to snow-related expenses, including salt purchases, contracted snow removal and overtime expenses.

“We lived through a winter that brought heavy snowfall … breaking our overtime budget in Roadway Division of Public Works,” Hock said.

Several of the budget items are tied to initiatives created in the city’s new strategic plan.

Council members are scheduled to consider the proposal at Monday’s combined pre-council and regular council session.

QUICK NEWS Thousands of books recycled, re-used JOLIET – About 61,000 books changed hands and another 9,000 were recycled at the Will County Land Use Department’s recycling event held June 6 to 8.

The county reported in a news release that the number of books changing hands was up by 6,000 from last year.

The event is held annually at the Joliet Park District’s Pilcher Park Nature Center.

A document destruction service also was provided, and about 6,000 pounds of documents were shredded.

Shorewood-Troy library board approves operating budget

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The Shorewood-Troy Library District last week approved a $1.26 million operating budget for the next fiscal year, a 4.7 percent increase from the last budget.

Director Jennie Mills said the increase is primarily because of the expected increase in capital expenditures from replacing the large two-story window in the library. The replacement is expected to cost between $75,000 to $85,000.

Mills said the window is not structurally sound anymore, and the library is looking to replace it in the fall.

The next step for the library board is to approve the appropriations budget during July’s meeting, and publicly display the budget before officially passing it in August.

The board Thursday also

passed a yearly ordinance to levy an additional 0.02 percent tax to equip, maintain and repair the library building.

Mills said the levy is not an increase in taxes, and it’s passed every year to help the district with maintenance costs. The levy would bring in an estimated $10,172 for the library.

Annual event in Joliet celebrates life, aids the fight against cancer

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – They came by the hundreds to celebrate life, remember those fallen and raise funds to fight cancer.

The Relay For Life of Joliet drew 500 participants on 50 teams to ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium on Saturday. This year’s goal was to raise $250,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“We’re ahead year over year,” said Kevin McMaster, Relay of Life specialist for Joliet. “There are so many large businesses out there that support the event, and the community really rallies behind it.”

The sunny weather also helped.

“We’ve finally had great weather,” McMaster said.

“Last year we had a storm coming in and had to worry about when it was going to hit. This year we have nothing to worry about.”

Relay for Life started Saturday afternoon and continued overnight into Sunday.

Many of those attending the event were survivors themselves who came to walk the Survivors Lap, or to light a luminaria for those who have lost their battle with cancer.

For Karissa Calvert, 9, of Minooka it was a chance to run outside in the sun.

Nine months ago, after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, Karissa couldn’t even get out of bed.

She spent weeks at University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, strapped to a ventilator and kidney dialysis machine.

Initially the outlook was bleak, said Amanda Calvert, Karissa’s mother.

“We were told the leukemia was so strong that chemotherapy wouldn’t work and that she would need a bone marrow transplant,” Calvert

said.

But Karissa bounced back.

Within a few weeks she was off the ventilator and dialysis, and receiving daily chemotherapy in the hospital. She was allowed to leave the hospital only twice during treatment, on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“We basically lived in the hospital,” Calvert said.

Earlier this year, Karissa finished her treatment. She was able to graduate fourth grade on the honor roll despite missing six months of school, and go back into cheerleading.

To see her running around at the Relay For Life survivors’ dinner, you would never think she had been ill.

Gail Besar of Plainfield

has been a breast cancer survivor for seven years.

“I was really lucky because I didn’t have to go through chemo, just a lumpectomy and radiation,” Besar said.

“And having a supportive family and friends made it a whole lot easier.”

It wasn’t her first experience with the disease.

“My mom died of cancer when she was 45. I was 17,” Besar said. “Both of her parents died from cancer, too.”

Six years ago, Besar organized Team Wal-Mart in Shorewood, one of the groups attending Saturday’s relay.

But Besar also works to raise money throughout the year by hosting various on-site fundraisers at local businesses.

“We’ve always tried to give back to the community,” Besar said. “This was something that was close to my heart.”

Sue Purkart is another breast cancer survivor. It’s been 10½ years for her.

“At first I thought I had only five weeks to live because my uncle died five weeks after his diagnosis,” Purkart said.

“But God helped me through it and I’m still here.”

While the cancer is gone, Purkart still deals with after-effects from the ordeal: lymphedema, a swelling in

the lymph system, and neuropathy, a tingling sensation in the hands and feet.

“You struggle with that every day, but if you get up and you are alive, it’s a good day,” Purkart said.

Purkart has been involved with Relay For Life since 2003.

“The American Cancer Society has been there for me since day one,” Purkart said.

This is the fourth year that relay has been held at Memorial Stadium. Prior to that it was held at the Joliet West High School track.

Obstacle course brings out the warrior

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The faces of those who had just completed the 3.1-mile Warrior Dash held this past weekend Channahon registered joy and triumph, exhaustion and numbness. Some registered pain.

About 20,000 people were expected Saturday and Sunday at Dollinger Farms in Channahon, which hosted Warrior Dash for the fourth year. Warrior Dash is in its fifth year and is held at 50 locations worldwide. The first one was in Joliet.

Run by Red Frog Events out of Chicago, the dash is a running and obstacle course designed to challenge those athletically minded and to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

It is billed as the world’s largest obstacle race series.

Red Frog spokeswoman Stephanie Schell said more than a million warriors have stormed the dash’s battlegrounds in the past four years and have raised $7.5 million for the hospital.

Schell said the company continues to hold the event at Dollinger Farms because of the good working relationship with the family and because the farm provides a perfect location for the course.

Names of shooting victims released

Mokena man dies in motorcycle crash

SHAW MEDIA DWIGHT – As of Sunday night, Dwight police had no new information to release regarding who may have killed two females and wounded a man they found in a Dwight home Saturday.

Donna J. Denker, 60, of Dwight, and Kelli L. Denker, 30, of Dwight, were the two females found dead, according to a news release sent Sunday evening by Livingston County Coroner Mike Burke. Outside of the names and ages, Burke’s release noted no further information was being released.

Autopsies on the two females are schedule for 9 a.m. Monday, according statements Burke

made Saturday.

Dwight police responded to a call at 4:38 a.m. by a male subject who said he had been shot at 200 W. North St. in Dwight. Officers found the man lying on the floor inside the residence, as well as the two bodies of the females.

The male victim was taken to Morris Community Hospital and later airlifted to a trauma center. Dwight Police Chief Tim Henson declined to comment over the weekend on the ages of the two women or whether they also had been shot. Henson added the identification of the victims was being withheld pending family notification.

“It’s for all fitness levels,” she said. “Warriors can bypass an obstacle if they feel they cannot complete it.”

It was the third Warrior Dash for Patty Sendra of Mokena. She brought her mother, Tracy Sendra, with her this year. They both completed the course.

“I asked her if she wanted to go,” Patty said. “I told her there were lots of hot shirtless men.”

“I liked getting muddy,” her mother said. “I loved the obstacles. I really liked the ropes all tied together. The

GRUNDY COUNTY – The office of Grundy County Coroner John Callahan is investigating a motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a Mokena man late Saturday afternoon.

Callahan stated the incident occurred on East Route 6 just east of Brisbon Road, where a group of motorcycles traveling east. A motorcycle near the back of the pack driven by 35-yearold Matthew Domzal lost control of his motorcycle and went down on the pavement, according to a news release from Callahan’s office.

Domzal was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to Morris Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

The crash is being reconstructed by Grundy County Sheriff Department and further investigation by the Coroner’s Office. An examination is scheduled to take place Sunday morning.

Fire breaks out at Sponge Cushion Inc. MORRIS – Stored chemicals used in processing at Sponge Cushion Inc. in Morris caused a fire that lasted several hours Saturday and required assistance from neighboring communities to extinguish it.

The fire broke out about 1:25 p.m Saturday., according to Robert Wills, deputy chief, Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District, and then spread to a pallet of similar chemicals, causing heavy smoke. The

He and friend Sammie Drake, from Elk Grove Village, still had their red warrior helmets on, although Drake said she lost hers for a minute when it flew off going down the slide. She found it floating in the mud pit. Drake said getting dirty was one of the best parts of the dash.

“It’s a good excuse to get dirty and play in the mud,” she said.

“It was great,” Dirker said.

“It was crowded this year, but the obstacles were worth it.”

Dirker said his favorite obstacle this year was the Goliath because of its multiple challenges.

“You can find yourself in a situation if you don’t watch yourself,” he said.

The fire was cleaned up about 5 p.m. The cause is under investigation, Wills said.

Tax credit eyed for tornado victims

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com DIAMOND – A tax credit could be in the future for Diamond and Coal City property owners affected by the tornado.

Two distinct tax exemptions may apply to several homeowners who made improvements to their property during post-tornado construction.

Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc said she and Grundy County Assessor Dave Henderson are working on making the two exemptions available to homeowners as they may require an application process.

Depending on each homeowner’s situation, the exemptions may not take effect until the 2015 tax year or later.

“I just want everyone to be aware that this is out there,” Kernc said. “The last thing I want is for anyone to miss an opportunity.”

Natural Disaster Homestead Exemption The Natural Disaster Homestead Exemption is a permanent tax credit that reimburses homeowners whose property values may have increased after a disaster.

Often during the reconstruction process, owners make home improvements or increases in living space, altering their home’s property value and potentially driving up property taxes.

The exemption considers assessed property value before the disaster struck and compares that value to whatever the home’s new value is after upgrades are made. The difference between the two figures is issued as a reimbursement.

“If your home was totally demolished, you literally have a brand new home that could be worth much more than your previous home,” Kernc said.

The reimbursement amount is fixed and applies to homeowners every tax cycle until they sell their home.

However, the natural disaster exemption is capped, meaning those who made significant improvements may not receive the full difference between preand post-tornado values.

Homestead Improvement Exemption To qualify for this exemption, no disaster damage is needed. It simply applies to homeowners who make improvements to their property, Henderson said.

The improvement exemption works in tandem with the natural disaster credit. For example, if a homeowner hits the limit on the natural disaster tax credit, then they could likely receive a homestead improvement exemption as well.

The combined exemptions work together to help disaster-affected homeowners to mitigate property tax increases.

A noted difference: This exemption is only available for four tax years and after the four years a homeowner utilizes the exemption, it expires.

Henderson said for years the Grundy County assessor’s office has automatically applied the homestead improvement exemption to eligible households.

Henderson said his office is still deciding the easiest way to make the natural disaster exemptions available, but assured homeowners no hurry is necessary at this point.

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky They soon found themselves on a ship heading to Okinawa, where they spent 12 days zigzagging across the ocean to avoid enemy detection.

The women worked 12-hour days, seven days a week in hospital tents, tending to wounded and ill soldiers. Klimek herself was stricken with dysentery.

She spent one year in Okinawa having access to only the most meager accommodations, such as ice cold showers and outhouses.

Her trip on the Honor Flight two weeks ago began when she was picked up at her home at 3 a.m. and driven by volunteers to Midway airport.

sang and danced, in era clothing, much like the beloved Andrew Sisters of the time.

Once at Dulles airport they were whisked off to see several World War II memorials and monuments. Each veteran had a personal guardian who stayed throughout the entire trip and escorted them in a wheelchair for comfort.

They arrived back in Chicago later that night to a welcome party of about 2,000 well-wishers. There were friends and relatives waiting their return, but also groups like the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, schoolchildren and other veterans who had been on a previous Honor Flight and came back to welcome them home.

The revelers waved flags, cheered and held welcome home signs. The Frankfort Brass Band, who had been keeping the crowd entertained and upbeat as they waited

for the veterans, continued to play. As the veterans came through the “parade” line, they received handshakes, hugs, pats on the back and even a few kisses.

As a sailor wheeled Klimek off the plane she saw all kinds of people she didn’t know waving and smiling at her with patriotic pride. She was completely overwhelmed.

“I knew nothing of this stuff going on. It was all a secret,” she said.

And then she spotted some familiar faces.

“I was looking around and here’s my niece and nephews,” she said with a big grin.

“I loved every minute of the trip.”

Friend and Southwest Airlines Capt. Kenny Seaman had the privilege of flying World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., twice. Seaman, who served 15 months in Iraq, said the experience was an honor

for him, as well.

Seaman had a chance to chat with some of the infantry soldiers. He listened as men from different branches of the armed forces shared their stories with each other, learning how they had supported one another. They each knew their part in the war so it was like putting together pieces of a puzzle.

Most of the veterans served four years in Europe during World War II, he said.

“What a sacrifice of their lives; my 15 months [in Iraq] was hard but in four years life changes. I don’t think a lot of people understand that,” Seaman said. “The sacrifices they made and what they gave up was pretty overwhelming.”

Shorewood resident Jean Klimek got the ride of her life recently when she flew from Chicago Midway International Airport to Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. Klimek, a 91½ year old former 1st Lieutenant Army nurse, was one of about 90 World War II veterans who went on a trip to the U.S. capital, courtesy of Chicago Honor Flights. It’s a way of recognizing and thanking the men and women who have served our country.

Klimek was one of just a few women veterans on the flight, which didn’t faze her in the least.

She and 14 other women who received their nurses training at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago back in the 1940s all agreed to join the Army. They stuck together through their training at Camp Barkley in Texas and on to a military hospital in Seattle.

MORRIS – A 3-year-old child drowned in an aboveground pool Sunday afternoon.

Grundy County Coroner John Callahan’s office is investigating the apparent drowning that occurred in Morris, according to a news release sent Sunday night from Callahan’s office.

BOLINGBROOK – Police say a father and son pulled a teenage girl into their van Saturday night and attempted to run down the men who came to her aid.

Lt. Mike Rompa said several people called 911 at 9:30 p.m. to report a light-colored van “attempted to hit several pedestrians” at Blackhawk Lane and Shawnee Drive. Officers arrived and stopped the van.

Rompa said Paul A. Williams Sr., 43, and Paul A. Williams Jr., 18, attempted to lure the 15-year-old girl inside and “made sexual comments toward her.” When the younger Williams got out of the passenger seat, the victim ran for help, Rompa said.

brought a 48-year-old man and a 34-year-old man to help, but when they arrived “the van accelerated then swerved to hit them,” Rompa said.

The elder Williams, of the 100 block of Enclave Circle, and the younger Williams, of the 1600 block of Boulder Ridge Drive, were arrested and booked into the Will County jail on charges of child abduction and indecent solicitation of a minor. Williams Sr. was also charged with aggravated battery.

JoAnn’s mother had died from eclampsia when JoAnn was just five; the baby JoAnn’s mother was carrying also died, Tammy said. JoAnn raised two children, Tammy, and also the late Randy Deck of Chicago.

But JoAnn’s legacy is her art: collages, quilts, ceramics, fused glass, digital manipulations of photos. Even the home décor reflected JoAnn’s unique style, Tammy said.

In a 2008 story for The Herald-News, JoAnn said she worked intuitively; that color excited her, that she handdyed her fabrics; that she preferred 100 percent cotton fabrics, but occasionally melted polyesters; that her pieces weren’t vintage-looking; and that all pieces were for sale, except one: a tribute collage to her stepmother.

“It helped me get through the grieving,” Deck had said.

“It’s not a fabric collage, but a dimensional collage from things that were hers: a piece of her watch, the mirror from inside her lipstick container and her Washburn School graduation paper.”

“She was an active participant and encourager, not just for me but others she would encounter through her groups and guilds and church,” Tammy said. “She was a helper.

She was a woman of faith.”

JoAnn believed in her art and worked tirelessly to show it: craft shows, art galleries and – once, in 1998 – at the Naperville Art League’s Riverwalk Fine Art Fair, a dream come true for JoAnn, Tammy said.

A blogger, JoAnn’s plan for 2014 was to step up her online presence and increase her visibility. Tammy is now continuing her mother’s dream by selling her mother’s work through the JoAnn Deck Trust and donating a percentage of proceeds to art organizations her mother supported, including PAL. JoAnn was still active in PAL, said Mike Bessler, PAL president, when she died suddenly on Dec. 29 at the age of 72. Both he and JoAnn had shared so many similar perspectives on art, he said.

“As an artist she was extraordinary,” Bessler said. “As

PLAINFIELD – Back when mixed media artist JoAnn Deck of Plainfield was still toying with the idea of painting, she took classes at community colleges and set up an art studio in her basement.

“I still remember the painting on the easel,” said Tammy Deck of Westmont, JoAnn’s daughter. “It was a loaf of bread cooling on a windowsill.”

JoAnn struggled with the definition of artist. She could not draw and drawing did not interest her, Tammy said. Yet, Tammy added, the need to create was inherent in JoAnn and that will be obvious at JoAnn’s memorial art show, running through June 30 at the Indian Prairie Public Library in Darien.

“It’s the way she processed her life. It’s an expression of who she was,” Tammy said.

“Each piece is an extraordinary visual expression, representation or reaction to contemporary life. Our lives, after all, are a collage of diverse elements and experiences. Some are sought out, some are presented by others, some [are] acquired by happenstance. Each work is a moment captured from a colorful life lived.”

JoAnn’s overall goal was to present herself as a professional artist. To that end, Tammy said, JoAnn also took classes and workshops in marketing, documenting her pieces and the thought process behind them and chronicling information on past exhibits and awards.

Unlike many artists, JoAnn did not work in isolation.

She was active in the Plainfield Art League, having served as its volunteer gallery staff person every Friday in 2010 and 2011, Tammy said.

JoAnn also belonged to the Midwest Collage Society (membership chairperson) the Professional Art Quilt Alliance, the Naperville Art League, the Creativity Continuum at TLD Design Center & Gallery in Westmont (which Tammy owns) and – in the past – to the DuPage Art League.

The Marley Creek Bridge he town of Marley is located on a short rise adjacent to Marley Creek, which originally was named North Folk Creek, and flows to Hickory Creek in nearby New Lenox Township.

Prior to settlement in the early 19th century, much of the site was covered with forest.

According to land records, nearly 82 acres of this land was initially purchased by Peter Bolles in 1835, and a portion of these acres then were purchased

by Myron Nathan Marshall in 1850.

In 1870, Marshall sold large tracts of land in New Lenox, Homer and Frankfort Townships to Archibald Allerton for the purpose of raising livestock.

The southern boundary of this land was Maple Street and the main entrance to his property was where the town of Marley is located today.

Within a few years, Allerton’s land was subdivided into smaller acre farms and some land was purchased by the Chicago Strawn Railway Company for a railway right-of-way, and 160 acres went to George Haley.

In the 1880s, early settlers began to arrive and soon the town of Marley began to grow. The steel bridge over Marley Creek, shown in the “then” photograph, dates from the late-19th century.

The bridge is located just west of the Wabash Railroad tracks on Maple Street.

In 1955, the steel bridge partially collapsed and soon was repaired and eventually replaced in 1958.

The “now” photograph shows a similar view of the bridge over Marley Creek today.

an island of calm in pop music The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – In pop culture, Casey Kasem was as sweet and dependable as a glass of warm milk and a plate of chocolate chip cookies, which only made the ugliness of his last few years of life seem more bizarre and tragic.

The radio host of “American Top 40” and voice of animated TV characters such as Scooby-Doo’s sidekick Shaggy died Sunday morning at a hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington.

He was 82. He suffered from Casey Kasem a form of dementia, and his three adult children from his first wife fought a bitter legal battle with Kasem’s second wife, Jean, over control of his health care in his final months.

That made Kasem a fixture on news outlets that feed on the sleazier side of celebrity life at a time when it wasn’t clear he was aware of it or even able to understand.

This wouldn’t seem all that remarkable for a bad-behaving pop star or actor who shed spouses with the frequency of changing characters. But this was Casey Kasem, whose work epitomized the gentler, romantic side of pop culture, of a time when stars were admired for their celebrity and worshipped for their talent.

“American Top 40,” with Kasem’s soft, homey voice counting down the hits, was a refuge from shock jocks or the screaming big-city radio voices.

It was dependable, broadcast on some 1,000 stations at its peak, so if you were driving in Connecticut or Kansas, California or Kentucky, you could always take a measure of the pop charts with Casey.

Gov. Quinn signs law banning police ticket quotas

CHICAGO – Police ticket quotas are now banned in Illinois under legislation signed into law Sunday by Gov. Pat Quinn, a move supporters say will help restore public trust in law enforcement.

The law took effect immediately and applies to all local, county and state police departments.

It says municipalities and police departments cannot require officers to issue a certain number of citations in a certain period of time, and that the number of tickets that officers write cannot be used as part of their performance evaluations.

“Law enforcement officers should have discretion on when and where to issue traffic citations and not be forced to ticket motorists to satisfy a quota system,” Quinn said in a written statement, adding that the law will improve safety and working conditions for police officers.

The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Andy Manar of Bunker Hill and state Rep. Jay Hoffman of Swansea, both Democrats.

“Arbitrary quotas on the number of tickets that have to be issued by police officers undermines the public trust in the police departments’ priorities,” Hoffman said. “By eliminating these quotas, we can restore that trust and ensure that police officers are free to do their job protecting the public.”

It was all part of Hidden Cash, a scavenger hunt craze started in San Francisco by real estate investor Jason Buzi, who said he’s one of several people behind the effort that he calls a “social experiment for good.”

The altruistic group encourages people who find cash to pay it forward by doing something nice for someone else.

Buzi has said many have responded by spending the cash on coffee, groceries or gas for others or by helping the homeless and charitable causes.

Hunters followed Twitter clues to find the envelopes, some of which were placed in statues in Millennium and Oz parks. Hidden Cash also tweeted that there will be “a small surprise” on Monday, hidden in a different Chicago location.

The scavenger hunts started in San Francisco and have been spreading to other cities,

including New York, Houston and Mexico City on Saturday and Chicago on Sunday.

Illinois investors jump into marijuana business

SPRINGFIELD – Investors around Illinois are jockeying for positions in the marijuana business as they wait for the state’s new medical marijuana law to kick in. And some of them are politically connected.

According to the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises, Sam Borek has reserved at least three-dozen marijuana-related business names. Borek was a college roommate of the legislator who sponsored the law, Democratic state Rep. Lou Lang of Skokie.

Those companies have names like Illinois Medical Marijuana Sales Inc., Illinois Cannabis Realty Inc. and Cannabis Medical Centers of Illinois Inc. And then there’s David Rosen

of Chicago. He was Gov. Pat Quinn’s chief fundraiser in 2010 and also raised money for Hillary Rodham Clinton and Al Gore.

Rosen has filed paperwork to open a medical marijuana business in Nevada called Waveseer.

But he’s registered that business name in Illinois, too. Rosen’s investors, according to state records from Nevada, include a number of Quinn donors.

But Borek said he already has run into a potential hurdle.

“We’ve got some checks to invest from investors and we can’t deposit them,” he said.

That’s because banks have so far turned him down when he tried to open checking accounts. He said the banks are worried about possible penalties under federal law if they do business with marijuana growers and sellers.

He believes he might be able to remedy the problem by removing the word “marijuana”

Aspiring Chicago singer crowned Miss Illinois

MARION – Marisa Buchheit of Chicago is the new Miss Illinois.

According to WSIL-TV, Buchheit was crowned Saturday night at the pageant in Marion in southern Illinois. She is also Miss Chicago for 2014.

Buchheit was selected from a field of 31 contestants from around the state. According to her website, she is an aspiring opera singer.

Buchheit next will compete at the Miss America pageant in September in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Sunbather hurt after being run over by truck

SPRINGFIELD – A central Illinois woman was hurt after being run over by a pickup truck while she was sunbathing.

The State Journal-Register in Springfield reported that 23-year-old Amanda Clark of Loami was sunbathing near a Lake Springfield boat launch on Saturday when the accident happened.

The truck’s driver was 48-year-old James Mordacq of Springfield. He told police he was looking at the lake while negotiating the curve off a sailboat launch when he accidentally ran over the lower part of Clark’s body. No citations were issued.

The newspaper reported that Clark was in serious condition at Memorial Medical Center on Saturday.

A hospital spokeswoman said Sunday that she could not release any information because of patient privacy laws.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Boy on Father’s Day visit, 5 others, die in fire NEWARK, N.J. – A teenager on a Father’s Day visit to Newark to honor his deceased dad died, along with his mother and four others, when a fast-moving fire ripped through a three-story home early Sunday, authorities and the boy’s grandmother said.

The blaze broke out at the single-family residence about 4 a.m. and soon spread to another home, the Essex County Prosecutor’s office said. Both structures were destroyed.

Authorities have not determined the cause of the fire but say it doesn’t appear to be suspicious, Thomas Fennelly, chief assistant prosecutor, said.

Everyone in the second home managed to escape safely, he said.

Crews race weather in Central California wildfire BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Federal fire officials accelerated their attack Sunday on a smoky wildfire that threatened 500 homes in Central California as they raced to control the fast-moving blaze before hotter, drier weather sets in, a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman said.

The fire burning in and around the Sequoia National Forest doubled in size overnight and came within a mile of a community about 30 miles northeast of Bakersfield where sheriff’s deputies walked the streets with bullhorns and knocked on doors as they urged residents to evacuate, authorities said.

“They were out there walking the streets through the night,” Forest Service spokeswoman Cindy Thill said. “I just got off the phone with someone who said the sheriffs got to them at 2 this morning.”

The Forest Service reported that the Shirley Fire had consumed more than 2.8 square miles of trees, grass and chaparral located on federal, state, local and private lands as of Sunday morning. The blaze, first reported Friday night, was 10 percent contained.

The cause is under investigation.

The 500 homes where people were being strongly urged to leave are located in Wofford Heights, an area sandwiched between the fire and Lake Isabella, a popular recreation spot.

Pope says he’ll visit Albania in September VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis will make a one-day trip to Albania in September to encourage a country that “long suffered” under a communist dictatorship which tried to isolate its citizens from the world.

Tens of thousands of impoverished Albanians fled to Italy in the 1990s, crossing the Adriatic Sea in crammed ferries and fishing boats as the regime in Tirana crumbled. Many of the migrants have since integrated into Italian life.

Rise of Shiite militias poses a threat to Iraq

By HAMZA HENDAWI and QASSIM ABDUL–ZAHRA The Associated Press BAGHDAD – Emboldened by a call to arms by the top Shiite cleric, Iranian-backed militias have moved quickly to the center of Iraq’s political landscape, spearheading what its Shiite majority sees as a fight for survival against Sunni militants who control of large swaths of territory north of Baghdad.

The emergence of the militias as a legitimate force enjoying the support of the Shiite-led government and the blessing of the religious establishment poses a threat to Iraq’s unity, planting the seed for new sectarian strife and taking the regional Shiite-Sunni divide to a potentially explosive level.

Iraq’s Shiite militias attacked U.S. forces during the eight-year American presence in the country. They

also were in the lead in the Sunni-Shiite killings of 200607, pushing Iraq to the brink of civil war. Their death squads targeted radical Sunnis and they orchestrated the cleansing of Sunnis from several Baghdad neighborhoods.

More recently, Shiite militias have been battling alongside the forces of President Bashar Assad and Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah against mostly Sunni rebels and militants in neighboring Syria. Some of them have returned home to Iraq – first to fight Sunni militants in Anbar province, and now on Baghdad’s northern fringes and in Salahuddin and Ninevah provinces.

Those are the areas where the Sunni militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, captured cities and towns in a lightning offensive last week. Among their gains were Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city,

and Tikrit, the hometown of Saddam Hussein.

Security officials said Shiite militiamen have been fighting for months on the government’s side against ISIL fighters in areas west of Baghdad in mainly Sunni Anbar province as well as parts of Diyala province northeast of the capital.

They also have been fighting Sunni militants south of Baghdad. Their involvement, however, has never been publicly acknowledged by the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Their enhanced role in the fight against the Sunni militants will deepen Iran’s influence in Iraq, giving the non-Arab and mostly Shiite country a role similar to the one it plays in Syria. Tehran has thrown its weight behind Assad’s government in his struggle against mostly Sunni rebels and militants from al-Qaida-inspired or linked groups.

By COREY WILLIAMS The Associated Press DETROIT – Anthony Brown keeps his home of 36 years in good shape, but it is an island of tranquility in a sea of blight in Detroit’s Marygrove neighborhood.

There is a vacant house next door, another across the street and still others farther down Wisconsin Street.

“It was beautiful around here,” Brown, a 59-year-old Ford Motor Co. worker, said about how things once looked.

“Everybody was in the houses. Everybody kept their lawns up. Everybody was planting flowers.”

Now he and others in bankrupt Detroit see signs of hope in an aggressive home preservation plan that Mayor Mike Duggan is using to lure people back into city neighborhoods. It’s no small task: A recent study recommended razing more than 38,000 houses. Another 35,000 are unoccupied, abandoned or government-owned and at-risk of becoming blighted. About 5,500 of those are owned by the city or the Detroit Land Bank Authority.

Instead of razing them all, the city is highlighting the

ones that can be saved and selling them at auction to individuals and families who want to fix them and move in.

That strategy, if successful, is expected to help eradicate blight and strengthen neighborhoods that are stable or onthe-edge.

The Land Bank began auctioning off one home per day in early May. That has since been expanded to two a day and soon will grow to three.

About 50 have been sold, so far, and 6,500 bidders have registered on the online auction site.

“We’ve sold $700,000 worth of houses,” Duggan told The Associated Press last week.

“We’re going strong to weak.

We’re starting in the strongest neighborhoods in this city and going after every single abandoned house.

“If you’ve got four abandoned houses on a block and you demo one house, you haven’t changed the quality of life for people on that block. If you try to sell one house where there are three abandoned, nobody’s going to buy. When you take the entire neighborhood at once and attack every single abandoned house, that’s when people are willing to invest.”

But the vacuum left by American forces has been filled by waves of resurgent violence and burgeoning Sunni extremism. Still, Obama resisted calls for the U.S. to get involved, saying it was now Iraq’s sovereign government’s responsibility to ensure the country’s security.

The current situation in Iraq appears to have made that stance untenable.

Obama, who once called Iraq a “dumb war,” now says it is clear the government in Baghdad needs more help from the U.S. in order to contain a violent al-Qaida inspired group that, he said, could pose a threat to American security interests.

While the White House is still evaluating a range of options, administration officials say the president is considering strikes with manned aircrafts, but only if Iraqi leaders were to outline a political plan for easing sectarian tensions.

Detroit fights the blight

WASHINGTON – From the Rose Garden, President Barack Obama outlined a timetable for the gradual withdrawal of the last U.S. troops in Afghanistan and said confidently, “This is how wars end in the 21st century.”

But less than three weeks after his May 27 announcement, there is a sudden burst of uncertainty surrounding the way Obama has moved to bring the two conflicts he inherited to a close.

In Iraq, a fast-moving Islamic insurgency is pressing toward Baghdad, raising the possibility of fresh American military action more than two years after the last U.S. troops withdrew. The chaos in Iraq also raises questions about whether Obama’s plans to keep a small military presence in Afghanistan until the end of 2016 can prevent a similar backslide there or whether extremists are simply lying in wait until the U.S. withdrawal

deadline passes.

“Could all of this have been avoided? The answer is absolutely yes,” Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said of the deteriorating situation in Iraq. McCain, one of the White House’s chief foreign policy critics and Obama’s 2008 presidential rival, added that Obama is “about to make the same mistake in Afghanistan he made in Iraq.”

That criticism strikes at the heart of Obama’s clearest foreign policy pledge: a commitment to ending the conflicts started by his predecessor, George W. Bush, and keeping the U.S. out of further military entanglements.

The turmoil in Iraq presents a particularly troubling dilemma for the White House.

Obama’s early opposition to the Iraq war was a defining factor in his 2008 presidential campaign and he cast the withdrawal of all American troops in late 2011 as a promise fulfilled. The president and his top advisers have since cited the end of the war as one

Changing pot laws prompt Pakistan army child-endangerment review launches offensive against militants

By KRISTEN WYATT The Associated Press DENVER – A Colorado man loses custody of his children after getting a medical marijuana card. The daughter of a Michigan couple growing legal medicinal pot is taken by child-protection authorities after an ex-husband says their plants endangered kids.

And police officers in New Jersey visit a home after a 9-year-old mentions his mother’s hemp advocacy at school.

While the cases were eventually decided in favor of the parents, the incidents underscore a growing dilemma: While a pot plant in the basement may not bring criminal charges in many states, the same plant can become a piece of evidence in child custody or abuse cases.

“The legal standard is always the best interest of the children, and you can imagine how subjective that can get,” said Jess Cochrane, who helped found Boston-based Family Law & Cannabis Alliance after finding child-abuse laws have been slow to catch up with pot policy.

No data exist to show how often pot use comes up in custody disputes, or how often child-welfare workers intervene in homes where marijuana is used.

But in dozens of interviews with lawyers and officials who work in this area, along

A failed proposal in the Colorado Legislature this year showed the dilemma.

Colorado considers adult marijuana use legal, but pot is still treated like heroin and other Schedule I substances as they are under federal law.

As a result, when it comes to defining a drug-endangered child, pot can’t legally be in a home where children reside.

Two Democratic lawmakers tried to update the law by saying that marijuana must

also be shown to be a harm or risk to children to constitute abuse.

But the effort led to angry opposition from both sides – pot-using parents who feared the law could still be used to take their children, and marijuana-legalization opponents who argued that pot remains illegal under federal law and that its very presence in a home threatens kids.

After hours of emotional testimony, lawmakers abandoned the effort as too complicated. Among the teary-eyed moms at the hearing was Moriah Barnhart, who moved to the Denver area from Tampa, Florida, in search of a cannabis-based treatment for a daughter with brain cancer.

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistani army Sunday launched a long-awaited operation against foreign and local militants in a tribal region near the Afghan border, hours after jets pounded insurgent hideouts in the country’s northwest, the army said.

The move effectively ends the government’s policy of trying to negotiate with Pakistani Taliban militants instead of using force to end the years of fighting that has killed tens of thousands of civilians and security forces. It comes a week after the militants laid siege to the country’s largest airport in an attack that shocked the country.

The North Waziristan tribal area, where the operation is targeted, is one of the last areas in the tribal regions where the military has not launched a large operation. Militant groups including the Pakistani Taliban, al-Qaida and the Haqqani network have long used the region as a base from which to attack both Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan.

“Using North Waziristan as a base, these terrorists had waged a war against the state of Pakistan,” military

spokesman Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa said in a press release announcing the operation.

The U.S. has pushed Pakistan to clear out militants in North Waziristan because they often use it as a sanctuary from which to attack NATO and Afghan troops.

But Pakistan has said its troops were already too spread out across the northwest, and the military has also wanted political support from the civilian government to carry out an operation which will likely spark a bloody backlash across the country.

On Sunday night, the defense minister aggressively supported the operation, but there were no comments from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

“Now we have to fight this do or die war,” Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif told Pakistan’s Dunya Television. “We will fight it till the end.”

There was no immediate information on how many troops were involved. The military said troops had been deployed along the borders to prevent militants from escaping, and within North Waziristan troops had cordoned off areas including the largest cities of Mir Ali and Miranshah.

Student loan politics continue The war on “millionaires and billionaires” is back! And at a most politically convenient time for President Barack Obama, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and their party.

Yes, the president this week has pivoted away from irksome foreign policy issues and onto friendly domestic territory, with an issue Democrats see as a winner in the midterm elections – the high cost of student loan debt.

The president recently announced plans to expand the number of student borrowers who are allowed to cap their

loan repayments at 10 percent of their income (a unilateral move for which the administration could provide no cost estimate) along with other underwhelming steps to ease the burden of student debt.

More significant, the president has endorsed passage of a bill – filed by Warren – that would allow student borrowers to refinance both their government and private student loans at lower rates.

And because there is no issue that this White House can’t reduce to a stark choice between good and evil – the evil

so often being those who dare to earn a hefty paycheck – well, Obama said members of Congress now face a choice.

“Lower tax bills for millionaires,” he said, “or lower student loan bills for the middle class.”

Warren’s refinancing bill is estimated to cost $58 billion over 10 years, a cost that would be covered by closing those “loopholes” that allow the wealthy to pay rates that may be the same or lower than individuals who earn much less.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

And while it’s true that student loan debt is burdening the U.S. economy, this plan does nothing to help student borrowers find the jobs they would need to repay the money they borrowed (with knowledge of what it would cost to repay).

And even more to the point, making borrowing

that much cheaper will do nothing whatsoever to bring down the high cost of a college education, which is the true driver of student loan debt.

This is nothing more than politics as official policy – the president’s shout-out to U.S. Rep. John Tierney, a vulnerable Democrat, at yesterday’s White House ceremony was just one of the clues – and it’s a misguided policy at that.

Playing loose propelled Providence to a state title Mark Smith has been coaching baseball for 22 years, and he never had seen a group of kids quite like he had this spring at Providence.

“I’ve never had a goofier group,” he said Saturday night, moments after the Celtics wrapped up the Class 4A state championship with a 4-1 win over Chicago Catholic Blue rival St. Rita at Silver Cross Field.

The Celtics (28-14) had times during the season when they struggled, sometimes badly. After a while, Smith decided it was time they should have some fun.

“We had a bunch of kids, young kids, who played tight almost the entire year,” he said. “It got to the point where they would make a mistake, they would be afraid to make another mistake and they would do it again.

“When we got into the postseason, we sat them down and talked to them about playing relaxed. We let them be loose and that sparked them. They had some fun.”

And how.

Before the championship game, Smith said, “These kids know nothing is expected of them. There is no pressure on them. They are out here to have fun playing this game.

Who knows what might happen.”

What happened is the announced crowd of 4,127, many of whom were clad in Providence green, were treated to one whale of a championship game.

The Celtics scored a run in the first inning on singles by Dylan Rosa, Mike Madej and Cam Galgano, only to have St. Rita answer with a run in the bottom of the third without the benefit of a hit.

The Mustangs, in fact, did not have a hit until the

bottom of the sixth. That was after Rosa had put Providence ahead to stay with a solo home run in the top of the inning.

Ah, yes, Rosa. The same kid who had so many huge hits in the postseason.

“I called that home run in the dugout,” said winning pitcher Jake Godfrey, who threw a complete-game two-hitter. “He’s our MVP for a reason.”

“If Dylan isn’t the MVP [of the postseason], I don’t know who is,” Smith said.

Back on May 19, Providence played its final game of the regular season at Joliet West. It figured to be competitive. Instead, the Celtics took advantage of the wind blowing out, blasting hits all over and out of the yard, and won, 15-1.

“The whole season, we did not put teams away,” Rosa said. “That Joliet West game turned our season around. It let us know we could put good teams away. It built up our confidence and momentum.”

What happened was the Celtics got the game from the Louisiana State-bound Godfrey that he knew he had in him. They got another

came from behind to beat a good Edwardsville team in dramatic fashion in the supersectional at the University of Illinois. Galgano’s two-run double in the bottom of the sixth made it 5-3, and Rosa ended it with a walkoff three-run double in the seventh.

“Cam’s two-run double and then the walkoff, after that, everything started going our way,” Rosa said.

Providence’s last baseball state title came in 1982, when the Celtics prevailed in Class A. In 2011, Smith brought the team to the 4A state championship game that was favored to win it all. But the Celtics had to settle for second best as Lyons played a near-perfect title game and won, 8-3.

“We were devastated after that loss,” Smith said moments before this year’s title game. “This time, we are

Providence attempted to appeal but was denied.

Winning for Kunsa became a rallying point.

“Phil will play a lot more baseball,” Smith said. “But it is heartbreaking for him.

Kids dream about playing in games like this.”

The Celtics played loose, had fun and realized the dream of winning the state championship.

As for taking off the reins and letting those goofy kids play loose in the postseason, Smith smiled, “It’s never going to happen again.”

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com EAST PEORIA – After averaging over 23 wins a year and winning nearly three-quarters of its games during its first 12 seasons, Lincoln-Way East’s softball program certainly had much to be proud of, considering the type of schedule it regularly faces.

But while the Griffins had won four sectional titles during that time, they only had one trophy to show for their efforts, and that was captured in their first year as a program.

Ever since Aimee Lonigro’s darkhorse squad made history by becoming the first team in state history in any team sport to win a championship in its initial season, East had been unsuccessful in its quest to secure another trophy for a top-four showing.

Lonigro’s teams won three more sectional titles, capped by a 2007 squad, which lost in the state quarterfinals. Katie Meader and Elizabeth Pawlicki have continued the success, but the Griffins hadn’t been able to return to the finals at Eastside Centre.

An 8-5 start to the 2014 season didn’t suggest that the drought would end, nor did three late defeats which resulted in the Griffins going 22-10 in the regular season.

But just as that memorable 2002 team did, this year’s squad put it all together during the playoffs, especially in an impressive stretch in the regional final and sectional.

Between an opening, 4-3, win over Lincoln-Way Central and a victory by the same score over Edwardsville in the super-sectional, East beat defending Class 4A champ Minooka, 13-2, in the regional final to avenge an early-season defeat.

After winning the rubber-game of its series with Lockport by an 11-5 margin in the sectional semifinals, the Griffins bounced back from two defeats to Joliet West to

others, the Griffins may not have to wait as long for their next trophy.

“It was definitely exciting to be down here,” Esparza said. “It was great to see everyone come together and work as a team in the postseason and we also scored a lot of runs, which was fun. We have such a young team that hopefully they can finish off next year what we started.

Because of this, we have a lot of momentum going into next year. Just to get down here was an awesome experience and I’ll definitely never forget it.”

“We were really motivated to get here and it was nice that we did since we worked really hard during the season,” senior captain Devon Morgan said. “Every team that we played was really tough so we had to be prepared and we made a lot good memories along the way.

Whenever someone got a hit we kept feeding off of each other and that kept us going.

I have faith that these girls will do better than we did and hopefully take state.”

Although it struggled offensively in its past two games, collecting four hits in a 5-1 semifinal defeat to Carl Sandburg and three hits in

a 6-0 loss in the third-place contest to Glenbard North, East was certainly pleased to capture its first trophy in 12 years.

“It was a great run and we were confident all the way,” senior captain Ashley Hesse said. “Once the postseason started, we were all into it and it was just awesome. I love these girls and think that the ones who’ll be back can accomplish a bunch of great things.”

The fourth-place effort capped a great spring where East won titles in girls track and field and boys volleyball and the girls water polo team also advanced to the state finals.

Minooka grad drafted in 29th round by Tigers

In the old days, when a baseball player thought he might get drafted, he spent the day of the draft by the phone.

These days, he spends his day on the phone, but not waiting for it to ring.

Jake Butler, a 2010 Minooka graduate who recently finished a stellar baseball career at University of St. Francis, was keeping track of the draft on his phone. Suddenly, in the 29th round, he saw his name pop up as a selection by the Detroit Tigers.

“I had an idea I might get drafted,” Butler said from the Tigers’ rookie camp in Lakeland, Florida. “I had talked to some scouts and some teams showed some interest, and I had some workouts with them.

Nobody called me to tell me I was going to be drafted, but I had a feeling.

“I was watching the draft on my phone and saw my name pop up. It was probably the coolest feeling I have ever had.

Then, people started calling me, and eventually, the scout I had talked to before did.”

Butler hopped a plane to Florida, and the finance major, who has one more semester to finish his degree at USF, signed a professional contract with the Tigers last Wednesday.

“I knew no matter what, whether I was drafted or not, that I wanted to continue playing baseball,” Butler said. “A couple scouts told me that if I ended up not getting drafted that I could always try independent baseball and try to get a look that way. But I also had a team offer to take me in the top 10 rounds if I would sign for less money.

“I figured if there was interest in taking me that high, that someone else would take me eventually.”

There’s good reason to take Butler. At a school with such a rich baseball tradition, Butler

by Don Peters from 1987-90. Peters was a first-round pick of the Oakland Athletics in 1990.

En route to being named

Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2014, the right-handed Butler posted a 10-2 record with a 2.02 ERA. In 98 innings, he collected 107 strikeouts and held opposing batters to a .186 average.

Butler completed nine of his 14 starts with a pair of

shutouts to help lift the Saints (38-22) to the CCAC regular-season championship and a berth in the NAIA Opening Round. Among his nine complete games were a one-hitter against Roosevelt and three two-hitters, including a 13-inning stint against Robert Morris. Another of his two-hitters – against Calumet College of St. Joseph – earned him NAIA National Pitcher of the Week honors.

In his final outing as a Saint, he went the distance as St. Francis upset then No. 6-ranked Georgia Gwinnett University, 3-2, in the NAIA Opening Round. For his career, Butler posted a 33-9 record in 53 appearances, all starts. He notched a 2.52 ERA in 3332⁄3 innings.

Butler is confident that the lessons he learned from his coaches along the way, along with his durability during his four-year stint at St. Francis,

will be an advantage in the pro ranks.

“I am sure my durability helped my chances,” he said.

“I just did what my coaches told me, took care of my shoulder and that was about it. I feel like one of my biggest strengths is that I have a pretty good fastball and I have pretty good control over it. I also have a curve, and I know I have to work on a third pitch, like a changeup, and get command of that.

“I am not sure whether they will want me to start or relieve. There were only like six guys here when I got here, and eight more came [Thursday]. Our first game is June 20 and we finish up at the end of August. After that, I don’t know if I will get assigned somewhere else or what. I will just wait and see how it plays out.”

SUBMITTED REPORTS AVON, Ohio – Grant DeBruin continue his hot hitting, belting a solo home run and an RBI single in the Joliet Slammers’ 6-2 victory Sunday over the Washington Wild Things, who had won the first two games of the weekend series.

The Slammers went ahead, 2-1, in the third inning on Marquis Riley’s run-scoring triple and Russell Moldenhauer’s groundout. DeBruin’s homer made in 3-1 in the sixth,

and Joliet added three in the eighth on DeBruin’s single, Adam Giacalone’s double and Jose Garcia’s sacrifice fly.

Riley finished with three hits and shortstop Max Casper made two outstanding defensive plays. Jake Hermsen started and gained the victory. Jordan Wellander retired the first nine men he faced in relief.

The first two games of the series were bitter pills to swallow as the Slammers lost, 5-4, on a walkoff two-run homer Saturday night after falling,

6-5, in the 11 innings Friday night.

DeBruin’s two-run homer gave the Slammers a 2-0 lead in the first inning Saturday.

Joliet was up, 3-1, in the fourth inning when Washington scored twice off Blair Walters to tie. It stayed tied at 3 until the eighth, when Casper’s squeeze bunt drove home the go-ahead run.

However, the Wild Things’ Connor Lewis spoiled things with the two-run, walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Santo Manzanillo.

In Friday’s game, Slammers center fielder Chad Stang injured his leg sliding into second base. He was placed on the seven-day injured list and the Slammers hope to have him back by the end of the season.

In Friday’s game, Joliet scored three times in the eighth inning to draw it at 5.

Marquis Riley drove in one of the runs with a groundout and the others scored on a wild pitch and an error. Ryan Connolly allowed the decisive run in the bottom of the 11th and absorbed the loss.

In other news, former Slammers pitcher Jake Sanchez was traded by the White Sox to the Oakland A’s for Triple-A outfielder Michael Taylor. Sanchez was pitching for the Sox’s Class A team in Kannapolis, Md. and was 5-4 with a 2.80 ERA. The Slammers return home Tuesday to begin a three-game set against the Normal CornBelters at Silver Cross Field. It will be a 2-dollar Tuesday and also will be the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame induction night for the Class of 2014.

“About 200 yards before the finish line, I knew if the car exploded, I’d still slide across the finish line,” Johnson said.

Johnson and his No. 48 Chevrolet made it through the last few laps with a comfortable lead, and the six-time series champion won Sunday for the first time in 25 NASCAR Sprint Cup starts at MIS. Johnson outlasted pole winner Kevin Harvick by 1.214 seconds for his third victory in four races. He also won at Charlotte and Dover.

It was the fifth victory in a row for Chevy and Hendrick Motorsports. Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. also have won during the streak that doesn’t count Jamie McMurray’s win for Chevy and Chip Ganassi in the Sprint All-Star race last month.

at Dover and Pocono. Paul Menard was fourth, followed

by Kasey Kahne, Gordon and Earnhardt in the 400-mile, 200-lap race.

Johnson had finished in the top five four times previously at Michigan, including a second-place showing in August 2011. He lost in August 2012 when his engine faltered with six laps remaining.

“It was a long time coming,” crew chief Chad Knaus said. “We’ve raced very well up here, and we haven’t been able to close the deal on quite a few occasions.”

There are now only four tracks on the current schedule where Johnson has never won – Kentucky, Watkins Glen, Chicagoland and Homestead-Miami. Johnson had led in 15 previous Cup races at MIS. “It’s good to see Jimmie, after leading so many laps here, close the deal,” owner Rick Hendrick said. “We’ve run out of gas, broke motors, blown tires.”

Johnson led after 164 laps Sunday before stopping to pit and giving up the lead. He was back in front with about 10 laps to go following a cycle of pit stops by other drivers.

A forgotten star for two years while building a complete game, Kaymer turned the toughest test of golf into a runaway at Pinehurst No. 2 on Sunday to become only the seventh wire-to-wire winner in 114 years of the U.S. Open.

Kaymer closed with a 1-under-par 69 – the only player from the last eight groups to break par – for an eight-shot victory over Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton, the twotime heart transplant recipient and the only player who even remotely challenged the 29-year-old German.

So dominant was Kaymer that no one got closer than four shots over the final 48 holes.

Only a late bogey kept Kaymer from joining Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only players to finish a U.S. Open in double digits under par. He made a 15-foot par putt on the 18th hole, dropping his putter as the ball fell into the center of the cup, just like so many other putts this week.

Kaymer set the U.S. Open record with back-to-back rounds of 65 to set the pace at 10-under 130. The ball landed on the front of the green and rolled to the back, setting up a twoputt birdie.

“He kind of killed the event in the first two days,” Henrik Stenson said. “He went out and shot two 65s and

left everyone in the dust.”

Fowler, in the final group of a major for the first time, fell back quickly on the fourth hole. He sent his third shot from a sandy path over the green and into some pine trees and had to make a 25foot putt just to escape with double bogey. Fowler played even par the rest of the way for a 72.

Compton birdied the eighth hole and got within four shots until he took bogey on the par-3 ninth, and Kaymer followed with an 8-iron to 4 feet for birdie.

Kaymer finished at 9-under 271, the second-lowest score in U.S. Open history next to McIlroy’s 268 at Congressional in 2011.

PHILADELPHIA – It took a while, but the Cubs at last won a series away from Wrigley Field. Now, they hope to keep it going.

Travis Wood pitched hitless ball into the sixth inning and the Cubs beat the Phillies, 3-0, Sunday, taking two of three at Citizens Bank Park.

Anthony Rizzo hit his 14th home run and Starlin Castro added three hits for the Cubs.

The last-place Cubs had been 0-9-3 in road series this year, and hadn’t won a set away from Chicago since Sept.

9 to 11.

The Cubs begin a threegame trip at Miami on Monday.

“It’s good to win a series on the road,” Rizzo said. “We can take that into Miami with us.”

The Phillies finished with just three hits against Wood (7-5).

By JAN LARSEN Shaw Media Correspondent CREST HILL – Those needing proof that man is dog’s best friend need look no further than the fourth annual Woofapalooza, held June 8 at Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm in Lockport.

“This is the best weather and best turnout we’ve had,” owner Susie Siegel said.

Every dog attending had its day – from Red, the search and rescue bloodhound for New Lenox Fire Protection District, to Kimora, a 6-yearold malti-huahua who won the smallest dog contest. At 2½ pounds, she was quite a difference from the largest dog there, a Great Dane named Phantom, at 145 pounds.

And let’s not forget Kitty, a black lab mix in a pink tutu who won the pie eating contest.

“Soon as I saw it was pumpkin, I knew,” said Kitty’s owner, Brian Gutke of Joliet. “She has a sensitive stomach and we often give her pumpkin.”

Gutke didn’t fare as well when it came time for humans to chow down. Marc Burchell of Joliet won that competition.

Gander, a service dog, attended with his human, Len Hodge of Chicago. Hodge served in Vietnam. Hodge said Gander “saved his life.”

Hodge has intermittent paralysis, but he also is a big help with post-traumatic stress disorder.

On this day, Gander was pouting just a little because he wanted to play ball and Hodge waned to explain the concept of a service dog.

“He’s a labradoodle from Freedom Service Dogs, out of a prison in Denver,” Hodge said. “Gander has 250,000 followers on Facebook.”

Red, the aforementioned bloodhound, showed people how good he is at search and rescue with multiple finds.

Red’s handler, Ryan Mallary, a firefighter-paramedic, said Red was a rescue who was found by the New Lenox firefighters.

“He lives full-time at the firehouse and howls every time a new shift comes in,” Mallary said.

Another plus: Red loves children.

“He can be petted all day long,” Mallary said.

Part of the day’s proceeds – about $500 – will be donated to Rescue Warriors, a rescue/shelter in Vernon Hills, where Kaity Siegel, manager, adopted a rottweiler puppy just three weeks ago, Kaity said.

“They rescue tons of puppies from puppy mills. Mine actually came from Oklahoma,” Kaity said. “They loved that it was going to live on a farm.”

HERRICK, Ill. – As rain pours down on a small farm outside of Edgewood on Friday, wildlife rescuer Anne Eddings looks for a fawn. It was supposed to be on site after the man who had kept the 1-year-old deer on his property without a license had been cited by the conservation police.

The fawn was nowhere to be found. Eddings said if the deer was found, she could bring it to be rehabilitated.

Unfortunately she expects the worst. The fawn, which was to be named Jane Doe, was intended to join a herd of deer in Herrick, some of which the Eddings have already rehabilitated.

“I wasn’t there to steal a deer,” she said as she left the property. “I was there to rehab a deer and that was going to be a long process.”

Anne and her husband, Ron, run Herrick Wildlife Rescue, a nonprofit organization which rehabilitates animals taken from abusive or domesticated situations and reintegrates them back

into the wild. While most of the time, individuals contact the Eddings when they have an animal that needs to be taken care of, other times, the couple works with conservation services to locate animals that need to be rehabilitated, which they have been doing locally for four years.

It’s certainly not the first time and it won’t be the last someone attempts to domesticate a wild animal. Eddings said she has taken care of an uncountable number of raccoons that have been in people’s homes illegally without a license. She has spent eight to nine months rehabilitating them before sending them back into the wild.

Eddings isn’t certain why people take the animals out of their natural environments to care for them as pets but suspects many don’t realize the permanent damage they’re doing.

“They take them, and they think they’re going to love these animals,” she said. “They’re still wild. People don’t know, but if they really loved them, they’d leave them to go free.”

At the bridge table, we make deductions and sometimes use intuition. A few deals involve making one deduction and using that to draw a second deduction.

Today’s is an example.

South jumps into six spades.

West leads the heart king. How should declarer plan the play?

After North made a game-invitational limit raise, South knew that a grand slam would be good if his partner held the spade king, heart king and diamond queen.

But since he had no way to find out if North had that perfecto, South sensibly took a shot at six spades.

The contract looks too easy.

Draw trumps, run the diamonds and claim an overtrick. But rather than plunge recklessly forward, South should wonder what might go wrong.

The only danger is a bad split in each pointed suit. If diamonds are 4-0, there will be a loser only if East has all four. If spades are 3-0, declarer can avoid a loser by guessing which opponent is long in the suit and finessing through him.

South should assume he has a diamond loser. But if East has four diamonds, who is likely to be long in spades? Right -- West.

So, after taking the first trick with his heart ace, declarer should cash his spade ace. Here, when East discards, South plays a spade to dummy’s jack, cashes the spade king, throws his heart five on the club ace and concedes a diamond trick when they do break 4-0.

Ethan has been sleeping on the couch for a week waiting for me to take the first step and reconcile.

He isn’t working and I am, and that is probably what has him so mad. I pay all the bills, and he thinks I feel superior because I’m bringing in money and he’s not.

He or she feels pressure to carry out excessive, repetitive behaviors (compulsions).

A person with OCD tries to relieve his or her obsessions by performing a compulsion. The goal of the compulsion is to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessive thoughts. For example, a woman who has the obsession that her hands are dirty might develop the compulsion to wash them 50 times a day.

OCD can affect anyone from any walk of life. A person can be extremely accomplished at what he does, but just spend a few hours a day (usually alone) performing his compulsive act. I know of a famous and brilliant scientist who was at the top of his field. However, he spent several hours each night on his knees, scrubbing the grout between the tiles on his laboratory floor. He felt he had to

The type of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can help control OCD symptoms. If one SSRI isn’t effective, another might work better. But even with the most effective SSRI, symptoms usually don’t disappear completely. You might need to combine an SSRI with another drug, such as a tricyclic antidepressant. These drugs can be effective, but they are more likely to have unpleasant side effects.

Patients often get the best results when they combine SSRIs with some type of psychotherapy. The two together often are more effective than either used alone.

A number of psychotherapy techniques might help. One technique is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

CBT helps a person with OCD recognize his fearful, obsessive thinking is unreasonable. The therapist might teach specialized techniques that can help extinguish the compulsions. For example:

• Exposure and response prevention.

A person is exposed to situations that provoke obsessive thoughts.

He or she is then prevented from performing the usual compulsive ritual, for gradually increasing amounts of time – and sees that nothing bad happens as a result.

• Habit reversal. A person is asked to substitute a different response, such as deep breathing, for the usual compulsive ritual.

• Thought stopping. The person uses some form of distraction whenever an obsessive thought occurs, such as thinking about a favorite vacation spot, or the ninth inning of the last game of their favorite World Series.

• Saturation. The person concentrates intensely on the obsessive thought until the thought loses its impact and becomes meaningless.

You might need to try more than one approach, or combination of approaches, before you find the one that is right for you.

But most of my patients with OCD have been successfully treated, so keep trying and don’t give up.

The proposed TIF District Redevelopment Project Area is generally located along the east and west sides of Interstate 55 and is further bisected with properties on the north and south sides of Route 6. The proposed RPA is an irregularly shaped area that consists of (16) parcels that are located on both the north and south side of Route 6 as well as the east and west side of Interstate 55 with the most northeast parcel along the parcel boundary with the former name of W. Zauratsky Road. Adjacent rights of way are also included.

There will be considered at the public hearing the Redevelopment Plan and Project for the Redevelopment Project Area. The Redevelopment Plan as proposed is on file and available for public inspection at the office of the Village Clerk, 24555 Navajo, Channahon, Illinois. The proposed Redevelopment Plan and Project includes the acquisition and conveyance of land in the Redevelopment Project Area, demolition, clearance and related site preparation activities, the construction, acquisition and installation of certain public works and improvements, if any, including, but not limited to, streets, storm sewers, water mains, sanitary sewers, traffic signalization, curbs, gutters, landscaping and parking facilities and related costs and expenses, all as provided in the Tax Increment Allocation Redevelopment Act, as supplemented and amended.

Prior to the date of the public hearing, each taxing district having property in the Redevelopment Project Area and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (f/k/a Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs) may submit written comments to the Village, to the attention of the Village Clerk, 24555 Navajo, Channahon, Illinois, 60410.

There is hereby convened a joint review board to consider the proposed approval of the Redevelopment Plan and Project designation of the Redevelopment Project Area and adoption of tax increment allocation financing therefor. The joint review board shall consist of a representative selected by each community college district; local elementary school district and high school district or each local community unit school district; park district; library district; township; fire protection district; and county that has authority to directly levy taxes on the property within the Redevelopment Project Area; a representative selected by the Village; and a public member selected in accordance with the Act. The first meeting of said joint review board shall be held at the Channahon Village Hall on the 27th day of May, 2014, at the Channahon Village Hall, 24555 Navajo, Channahon, Illinois.

At the public hearing, all interested persons or affected taxing districts may file written objections with the Village Clerk and may be heard orally with respect to any issues regarding the approval of the Redevelopment Plan and Project, the designation of the Redevelopment Project Area, and the adoption of tax increment allocation financing therefor.
