Special Olympics torch carried through Will County

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com In the past few years, the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics has been run in pleasant breeze and stifling heat.

On Tuesday there was rain that seemed to follow the torch as it was carried from Bolingbrook to New Lenox.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the single largest year-round fundraising event benefiting Special Olympics Illinois, according to the event’s website. The annual relay and its fundraising projects aim to raise money and to gain awareness for the athletes who participate in Special Olympics Illinois.

Tuesday’s run began at Bolingbrook Village Hall and the Flame of Hope was carried down Route 53. Lockport police officer Debbie Schenk, who coordinated the run locally, said the event gets a lot of attention long before passing motorists or pedestrians see the runners.

“The slow-moving emergency vehicles always draw attention. There were a lot of stares on Route 53, but also a lot of honking in support once they saw [the runners],” Schenk said.

Members of a local running club joined police when the torch was brought through Romeoville. To include other agencies, the run headed a few blocks south of Lockport to pass by state police headquarters and the edge of Crest Hill before turning around to cross over the Ninth Street bridge.

On State Street, Lockport Township and Homer Township firefighters positioned ladder trucks to hang a big American flag over the runners’ path. The flag is secured with bungee cords and hooks, but it requires concentration to synchronize two platforms designed for work, not display.

“You have to bring both ladders up at the same time.

The flag will stretch a little, but it wouldn’t look good if we ripped it,” Lockport Town-

QUICK NEWS Waste Management to pick up trash early JOLIET – Due to scheduled facility maintenance, Waste Management has announced that pickup of garbage, recycling and yard waste will be earlier this Friday. Collection will start at 6 a.m. instead of the usual 7 a.m. start, according to a news release from the City of Joliet.

Waste Management recommends that Joliet residents place their containers outside the night before their scheduled pick up.

The steady rain that had some Lockport officers standing under trees as they waited had eased into a drizzle when the torch arrived. Chief Terry Lemming, Lt. Ron Huff and officers Kevin Brauch, Marty Hamilton, Dennis Ivanich and Shaun Kelly met Schenk in a parking lot just southeast of the bridge to accept the handoff.

The Lockport police were joined by Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Kirsch and his daughter Rikki for their lap around City Hall.

While the torch run is heading to Hancock Stadium in Normal for the state games, Rikki Kirsch will compete next week in the National Special Olympics in New Jersey.

Kirsch will participate in the 25-meter backstroke, 25-meter butterfly, 50-meter freestyle and a relay with three other swimmers.

Coincidentally, Schenk was Kirsch’s first swimming coach.

“Don’t pull anything run-

ning [with the torch]. You have to compete,” Schenk told her just before the hand-off.

Kirsch promised not to strain herself running because she had swim practice in the afternoon.

“I’m practicing more [as it gets closer]. I’m both more tired and more excited,” Kirsch said.

Tuesday’s leg of the torch run ended in New Lenox and will begin again Wednesday in Chicago to travel to Kankakee. Torch runs also will take place in other communities throughout the state this week.

As the torch came down State Street, Pam Hirth and Kaylynn Bown left their nearby office to applaud.

“This looks so cool. We just want to show support,” Hirth said.

Hirth and Bown went back to work. Kirsch went to swim and Schenk drove ahead of the procession to make sure the road was clear for Kirsch’s father, another deputy and a correctional transport officer to carry the torch down to Joliet.

Mokena man, 2013 Lincoln-Way East graduate killed in Afghanistan

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Even at a young age, Aaron Toppen had dreams of a career in the military.

He was so determined to be a soldier that just two months shy of graduating Lincoln-Way East High School in 2013, the 19-yearold from Mokena joined the U.S. Army. By March, he was deployed to Afghanistan.

Officials said Tuesday five AmeriAaron can soldiers died in a rare Toppen friendly fire Mokena airstrike that hit a team of Afghan and U.S. troops conducting a security operation in the Zabul province in southern Afghanistan, possibly by a U.S. air strike. Toppen’s family said he was one of the five killed.

He was just 6 years old when the war in Afghanistan first began. His uncle, Jack Winters, said his nephew died “doing what he loved.”

“Aaron, despite his tender age of only 19 years old, was hugely patriotic, and at an early age, felt the desire and a need to serve,” Winters said. “Since the earliest conversations I had with him about career aspirations, he wanted to be a soldier.”

Aaron Toppen’s mother, Pam Toppen, stood just outside her Mokena home with family and friends Tuesday to speak to the media about her only son, with an American flag hanging from the house in the rain and a “Military Mom” flag in the front yard.

“He loved people. He loved being around people,” she said. “He was an all-around good kid.”

Army officials came to her home in the middle of the night Monday to inform the family that Toppen was among those killed. On Tuesday, the family’s driveway was filled with vehicles of family and friends who knew him.

Ryan Gleason of Frankfort, a friend of Toppen, described him as patriotic. “[Serving in the military was] something he felt he

should do,” Gleason said.

“He had that honor, had that duty. That’s a debt we can’t repay.”

Toppen was someone who “would give his shirt straight off his back for you,” Gleason said, noting the two of them would even look for people to help during bad weather.

“We had pickup trucks,” he said, “and in many instances he would help people stuck in the mud and snow.”

Toppen’s uncle, Stephen White, former chief judge of Will County, called Toppen “an incredible human being.”

Gralewski, who identifies herself as the sister of Aaron Toppen, posted on her Facebook page Tuesday that her brother was among those killed in the attack.

“At midnight last night my mom’s doorbell rang and we received the news that my little brother was one of the five involved in friendly fire in Afghanistan,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “My brother lost his life doing what he always wanted to do since he was a little boy.

He’s my biggest hero and the bravest man I know.”

Gralewski noted in her Facebook post that their fa-

ther died in February – just one month before Aaron Toppen was deployed overseas.

Toppen was a 2013 graduate of Lincoln-Way East High School.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family,” Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 Superintendent Scott Tingley said in a statement. “For someone of Aaron’s age, this is a very tragic event.”

Monday’s incident is considered one of the worst such incidents involving United States or coalition troops since the start of the nearly 14-year war.

The U.S.-led international coalition said the service members were killed in an apparent friendly fire incident. A statement said all five soldiers died Monday but did not give further details.

“Five American troops were killed yesterday during a security operation in southern Afghanistan. Investigators are looking into the likelihood that friendly fire was the cause. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these fallen,” Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said.

If confirmed, it would be one of the most serious cases involving coalition-on-coalition friendly fire during the war.

“The casualties occurred during a security operation when their unit came into contact with enemy forces.

Tragically, there is the possibility that fratricide may have been involved. The incident is under investigation,” the coalition said in an earlier announcement.

Cemetery officials support truck reroute

lleonecross@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery is getting fewer complaints from funeral goers since the village rerouted truck traffic away from a railroad crossing where funerals and semitrailers often have clashed.

“It’s definitely better. I’m hearing a lot less about it,” said Peter Young, the cemetery director. “We typically get complaints from people with some regularity, but not so much since they’ve made the changes.”

The new route steers trucks away from the Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing, where semitrailers crashed the gates 47 times in 2013. The location also is a spot where funeral processions have been disrupted by semitrailers.

Increasing truck traffic near the Joliet and Elwood intermodals on Centerpoint Properties, coupled with the crossing’s close proximity to the national cemetery’s main access point at Hoff Road off Route 53, has caused problems for funeral goers for years, he said.

“Because of the amount of truck traffic and the funeral processions coming down 53, we have trucks cut them off.

Are they aware it’s a funeral procession? I don’t know. Do they know they’re disrupting?

I don’t know. But people do complain about it, no question,” he said.

For years, trucks have often used Route 53 and Walter Strawn Drive as a shortcut to reach Joliet’s Union Pacific Intermodal, but that’s no longer an option with the village’s new prohibition of certain turns.

Village officials say the restrictions were put in place

amid public safety concerns at the crossing. In some cases, trucks waiting for funeral processions were stuck on the tracks and drove through the gates to avoid trains.

The situation is unique given that the veterans cemetery sees anywhere from 15 to 25 processions each day, with Mondays and Fridays being peak periods.

Despite Young’s support,

the reroute has been denounced by several business groups and trucking associations who say truckers now have to travel miles out of the way to reach their destination.

Young sent a letter to the village last week in support of the recent traffic reroute, noting “the chaos and disrespect shown previously by the trucks have decreased substantially in a short time.”

“While I get it from the economic standpoint, it can be tough trying to explain it to the grieving family members,” he said.

A traffic count will be conducted this week by the Chicago-based engineering firm, Baxter & Woodman, said Max Bosso, director of engineering and public works in Elwood.

The change in traffic flow is expected to reduce the number of vehicles along Walter Strawn by 1,000 to 2,000 a day.

Local high schools prepare for summer construction

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Summer months spell vacation for students but for school officials it means time for additional improvements to school buildings.

High school districts in Lockport and New Lenox have several construction projects they are planning to complete by the time the new school year begins in the fall. For Lockport Township

High School District 205, that means renovations to its athletic stadium. Lincoln Way High School District 210 is doing roof work at Lincoln-Way Central High School.

This summer, Lockport high school officials plan on replacing the track and grass field at its athletic stadium with artificial turf. It’s the biggest construction project for the school district thus far.

Team REIL Inc. will be the lead contractor for the project for roughly $1.6 million. Todd

Wernet, district superintendent, has said renovations to the stadium were needed so it could be used not only for athletes but other students.

Another summer project will be the relocation of the Career & Community Connections program, which provides vocational opportunities for students with special needs. Students in the program “develop communication skills and competencies through guidance and work experience,” according

to Lockport high school district’s website.

That program was held off campus, but now a wood shop classroom will be converted to hold the program, said Kim Brehm, school district spokeswoman.

Also for this summer, window units will be installed at Central campus and more security features – such as glass doors and cameras – will be added to the main entrance in the same building.

“They are going to make

it a little more like the [East campus] entrance. … Like most school nowadays they have two locked doors,” Brehm said.

At Lincoln-Way Central High School, students and staff can expect to see roof work completed this summer.

A section of the roof will be renovated, said Stacy Holland, district community relations director.

“It’s one of the oldest sections in the center of this building,” she said.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet veterans clinic was flagged for further review in a federal audit released recently amid national controversy over patient scheduling at veterans health facilities.

On Monday, the U.S. Veterans Affairs Department released an audit of VA health facilities nationwide that showed more than 57,000 U.S. military veterans have been waiting 90 days or more for their first medical appointments. An additional 64,000 appear to have never received appointments after enrolling.

The audit follows a nationwide controversy over reports two months ago of patients dying while awaiting appointments and of cover-ups at the Phoenix VA center. A preliminary review last month found that long patient

waits and falsified records were “systemic” throughout the VA medical network, the nation’s largest single health care provider serving nearly 9 million veterans.

In Illinois, Joliet Community-Based Outpatient Clinic, 1201 Eagle St., was among several facilities flagged for further review and investigation.

When asked why, Charity Hardison, Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital spokeswoman, referred to the final access audit report where it states “initial assessment of sites requiring further review is based on a review of qualitative response by front-line staff to questions and comments contained in site audit reports.”

She was not able to answer how long the review process would take or what it would consist of because the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, which offers care at the Joliet clinic,

is not involved in the process.

The Hines VA hospital was also flagged for further review. In a statement, hospital officials said they had requested an investigation because of recent allegations.

“We take allegations about patient care or employee misconduct very seriously and, if the allegations are true, the inappropriate behavior is unacceptable and employees will be held accountable,” the statement read.

In response to the controversy Tuesday, the U.S. House unanimously approved legislation to make it easier for patients enduring lengthy delays for initial visits to get VA-paid treatment from local doctors instead. The Senate was poised to vote on a similar bill within 48 hours, Democratic leader Harry Reid said.

JOLIET – The Joliet Township High School Foundation announced Tuesday it has received a $200,000 donation from alumni David and Margaret Grohne.

The donation is worth more than its face value since it made it possible to meet a fundraising challenge set by alumnus Brent Wadsworth, who will match the $200,000 and bring the foundation endowment to $1 million.

The donations will fund grants and scholarships to en-

hance educational opportunities for students and staff. The money will help senior students pursue their education after high school, the foundation said in a news release.

“We are always proud of our loyal alumni for their continued support,” foundation President Mark Turk said.

David Grohne is from the class of 1955. Margaret, David’s wife, was in the class of 1953.

Personnel Chairwoman Vicki Geiger said a Northern broker had only attended one personnel meeting in the Past 18 months.

“To only be at one meeting

in 18 months is, to me, just unacceptable,” Geiger said Tuesday.

Johnson said she pursued a new broker, Williams-Manny, after the firm was recommended by HR Directors from other counties.

Many county employees and board members were concerned about Johnson’s singular pursuit of Williams-Manny, so the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office conducted a thorough investigation to uncover any connections between Johnson and the firm.

The office found nothing.

Tim Knauf, of Williams-Manny, presented at a handful of personnel and fullboard meetings throughout the past two months, claiming his firm could save the county money while providing more services to employees through

a renegotiation with Blue Cross Blue Shield.

At one meeting, he assured employees that Williams-Manny would not exterminate any existing health benefits.

The contract allows the county to terminate Williams-Manny at will if it is unsatisfied with service, as long as it provides Williams-Manny 60-day notice.

With the approval of the contract, the threat of a lawsuit from Northern lingers.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland in a previous meeting claimed that Northern may have grounds for a lawsuit since there is an implied contract in place, and the broker may not have been given enough notice of termination.

Whether Northern will file suit against the county is unknown.

MORRIS – The battle of the brokers ended Tuesday evening – following months of dispute and accusations – with the Grundy County Board voting to hire Williams-Manny Insurance of Rockford.

Morris-based Northern Insurance Group was the county’s insurance broker for the past five years, but was replaced due to alleged communication and professionalism issues.

The county will pay Williams-Manny a fee of $2,917 a month – or $35,000 a year – for its services. The contract is for one year.

This amount is nearly identical to what the county paid Northern Insurance.

All 17 County Board members were present at Tuesday’s

meeting. The board approved the switch from Northern to Williams-Manny, 11-6, with members Doug Boresi, John Galloway, Frank Halpin, Ken Iverson, Dick Joyce and Jim Ryan opposing the change.

“The county should move forward with the broker that’s going to deliver the best service and then hold them accountable for cost reduction,” board member Chris Balkema said Tuesday. “Right now, that’s Williams-Manny.”

Northern’s communication was called into question months ago when the Grundy County Personnel Committee asked Northern to provide cost-saving ideas. The county currently pays nearly $3 million for employee insurance coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield and is trying to prune the county budget.

MORRIS – A Morris family returned home Monday night to find its two-story house on fire.

The family immediately called 911 just before 9 p.m., and for the next three hours, firefighters from 13 local agencies battled the flames.

Located at 9930 Scott School Road, the home and everything inside were deemed a total loss with damages estimated at $275,000, according to a news release from the Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District.

The fire has displaced Gary and Debra Schlappi and their family, who were identified through the property search function on the Grundy County Supervisor of Assessor’s website.

“After a fire, we have means of providing hotel rooms for victims, but they said they have family in the area that they can stay with,” Chief Tracey Steffes

The fire’s size and the lack of a positive water source created a challenge for firefighters, but crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby garage and propane tank, according to the release.

A friend, known on Facebook as Heidi Komnick Coultrip, is collecting donations for the Schlappi family, which has two teenage daughters, according her post on the Lisbon Seward Fire District Facebook page. She states in the post that the family has lost everything.

“We are very happy to be getting a hometown person as director for our library,” library board president Jo Dergo said. “We feel she’ll do an outstanding job.”

After Monday night’s meeting Dergo called Kennard, who accepted the position. She currently works at White Oak Library District, which covers Crest Hill, Romeoville and Lockport. She started there in 2008, and in addition has been acting as interim director in Pontiac Public Library since October.

Dergo said the director position pays $55,000 a year, and due to Kennard’s experience the board offered an extra week of vacation so she can take a previously scheduled vacation at Christmas.

Kennard, who was born and raised in Grundy County, attended Morris Elementary School District 54 until sixth grade, when the family moved to Mazon. She graduated from the former Mazon Verona Kinsman High School.

She received her bachelor’s degree in public relations with a minor in English from Illinois State University. She received a master’s degree in library information science from the University of South Carolina.

“Lorene will be a great fit,” board member Steve Larson said.

“We’ve been trying to find someone who would fit with our town.”

The board said it conducted an extensive, thorough search as it sought the best-qualified person for the position.

The position has been open since August, when former library director Kyla Waltermire resigned. The reason for her resignation has not been shared publicly.

Lynette Heiden has been acting as interim director since November.

Steffes said the homeowner, Gary Schlappi, is a 30-year veteran firefighter for the Lisbon Seward Fire District.

A Morris firefighter on the front line fractured two ribs while battling the blaze. He was transported from the scene to Morris Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The fire was ruled accidental by the MABAS Division 15 Fire Investigators comprised of members from Morris, Troy, Verona Kinsman and the Elwood Fire District and the Plainfield Police Department. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Steffes said it is believed to have started in the kitchen area.

Shorewood board Residents offer ideas OKs park project for park improvements

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Several residents were positive toward Joliet park officials’ plans for widespread park improvements, but they also brought up other ways the park district could improve as well.

On Tuesday, park officials in Joliet invited public input on a roughly $20.9 million plan to make a series of improvements to various facilities, parks and ground spaces. The plan also includes the construction of an all-purpose field house, a second ice skating rink and indoor recreation space at Nowell Park.

Park officials are holding special sessions on their plans this week. Their next meeting is 7 p.m. Thursday at Joliet City Hall council chambers, 150 W. Jefferson St. The project would be financed through bonds. The tax impact of the bonds would be about $1.80 a month for a $100,000 home. Park officials said the park district’s tax rate would still remain nearly 34 percent below what it was 20 years ago.

At about $6 million, park renovations and improvements would command most of the funds allocated toward the project.

Dominic Egizio, the park district’s chief executive officer, said many of the parks are more than 20 years old. Maintaining the aging neighborhood and community parks is costly to the park district, he said. Some parks, such as Heggie Field, Mayor Art Schultz Park and Osgood Park, date back to 1991.

“I think the age of the parks demonstrates that we have maintained them … but they have far exceeded their length expectancy,” Egizio said.

Park officials also detailed how the funds for the rest of project would be allocated: • $2 million for Pilcher Park infrastructure improvements.

• $500,000 for tree restorations.

• $250,000 for safety and security improvements.

• $280,000 for Joliet Memorial Stadium lighting improvements.

• $3.5 million for indoor training facility.

• $4 million for Nowell Park

Community Center.

• $4.2 million for additional ice rink at Inwood Ice Area.

After the presentation, Joliet resident Roger Thompson suggested to park board members more bike path connections, video surveillance at parks to keep them safe and more trash containers at the parks.

“Somebody complained about the lack of trash containers at some of the parks … it’s upsetting to find diapers scattered about because there’s no place to put the trash,” he said.

He also recommended cheaper athletic youth activities, an idea similar to what Danielle Meintanis of Joliet suggested the park district should pursue. She lamented the high cost of activities for families with multiple children.

“If you’re going to be building new facilities with all sorts of new programs, I’d like to see more family-friendly budget-wise ideas,” she said.

She also added the indoor field house should have an indoor track open to the public for all types of uses.

LOCAL BRIEF CenterPoint files suit to stop Elwood reroute ELWOOD – CenterPoint Properties, Union Pacific and APL Logistics filed suit Monday in U.S. District Court in an effort to dismantle the village’s recent decision to reroute semitrailer traffic near Walter Strawn Drive just west of Route 53.

As of Tuesday, however, a federal judge had yet to make a final decision on whether to grant CenterPoint injunctive relief, according to a news release from Elwood.

The lawsuit alleges Elwood’s actions “severely restrict truck access to and from intermodal facilities in the CenterPoint park,” violating federal law on interstate commerce and

The village board was presented Tuesday with a new look for the park and voted to approve a resolution authorizing the project.

“It’s going to be nice to have a [new park] to the far south of the village,” Mayor Rick Chapman said.

The park space is nestled between a detention basin and Wynstone Drive north of 215th Street. It also will have fitness stations along the trail, space for a U-12 soccer field, baggo games and a large open lawn.

The project would be funded through an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The deadline to apply for the grant is July 1, and village approval was needed to apply for it.

Eric Hornig, principal of the project for Hitchcock Design Group, said while there is no fence separating the southern end of the trail from the water basin, the park allows for a long visual distance so parents can see their children from across the park.

“It’s definitely an adjustment if we want to put that,” Hornig said, adding that Hitchcock is looking for feedback from the board and residents to incorporate into the plan.

The board also approved

a conditional use permit for Internet Auto Sales and Detailing Services, which wants to move in to the Serena Construction Co. building at 304 Amendodge Drive.

“The applicant is focused on Internet car sales, and add detail servicing for clients,” Community Development Director Karen James said.

Ben Barton, the owner of the business, plans to acquire cars, spruce them up and sell them through an Internet-based system. The cars will sell for value price, which Barton defined as in the $3,000 to $6,000 range.

James said as the business grows, it can lease more space within the building without coming to the board for authorization. Cars used in sales would be stored in the building, and parking and traffic impact would also be minimal.

The board also approved a $4.3 million bid to CB&I Constructors to construct an elevated 1.5 million gallon water tank on Mound Road.

The village put the project out to bid last year, but only one offer surfaced. The village put out another bid, expanding the requirements for the water tank, which yielded an offer by CB&I about $1 million lower than the first bid.

Currently, the two existing tanks used for water storage in the village hold about 1.5 million gallons combined, village engineer Bryan Welch said.

“There’s a necessity for this system,” Trustee Dan Anderson said, noting the water tank project is a part of the village’s comprehensive plan.

A truck driver heading south on Route 53 took a left turn too quickly onto Arsenal Road on Tuesday, causing his dump truck carrying dirt to overturn. No one was injured.

Dump truck overturns near Arsenal Road lleonecross@shawmedia.com A truck driver working for Primetime Logistics Services in Joliet was cited Tuesday after his dump truck overturned while attempting to turn left from Route 53 onto Arsenal Road, police said.

The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Hugo Mendez, 23, said he was driving south on Route 53 when he made a left turn too fast onto Arsenal Road, causing his truck to overturn. He refused medical treatment at the scene.

“I’m only bruised up a bit,” said Mendez, who was the only person involved in the accident.

Wilmington Police Sgt.

Rick Juster said Mendez received four citations related to the accident, but did not have additional information as of Tuesday afternoon.

Police also responded to a second crash later in the same afternoon just a halfmile north of Arsenal Road on Route 53. A semitrailer overturned, but no one was injured, he said.

Raymond R. Butler of Joliet passed away at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, with family and friends by his side, after a very courageous battle with cancer.

Born November 11, 1936 in Joliet to the late Herman and Margaret (McGahey) Butler.

Raymond was a member of Laborers Local 75 since 1970, and a retired member since 2000. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 241. Raymond enjoyed singing karaoke with his

Born February 3, 1925 in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Margaret Elaine was the daughter of the late John A. and Isa E. Young-Assmann.

There she was raised and educated before marrying Royce “Shep” Shepherd on July 8, 1944 in Santa Ana, CA. Together, Peggy and Shep

Ana, C og r, eggy p resided in various states including South Dakota, Colorado, Georgia, Nebraska, and New Jersey, before settling in Wilmington in 1959.

There, Peggy belonged to the Brookside Mothers' Club, sold Avon, and was a Den Mother for Scout Pack #458. Prior to going into the private sector providing care for several long term friends, Peggy worked at a bank, at the Provo, South Dakota Army Depot, and at St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet as a LPN. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, and P.E.O. Chapter GK. Peggy also volunteered her time with the Joliet Area Community Hospice. She enjoyed playing cards, walking, crocheting, and keeping in touch with dear friends from years past.

Peggy will be remembered for her love of spending time with family and friends. She will also be remembered for her dedication of corresponding through cards, notes, letters, phone calls and personal visits.

Chicago kicks off summer reading program for kids

CHICAGO – Chicago has started its annual summer reading program.

The program is called Rahm’s Readers Summer Learning Challenge after the mayor and designed to encourage children of all ages to pick up books.

This year, there’s an added challenge. Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon agreed to tape an episode of the show in Chicago if children in the city read 2.4 million books. Last summer Chicago children read 2.1 million books equally roughly 56 million minutes of summer reading.

It’s a free program funded through the Chicago Public Library Foundation.

Judge strikes down California teacher tenure LOS ANGELES – A judge struck down tenure and other job protections for California’s public school teachers as unconstitutional Tuesday, saying such laws harm students – especially poor and minority ones – by saddling them with bad teachers who are almost impossible to fire.

In a landmark decision that could influence the gathering debate over tenure across the country, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rolf Treu cited the historic case of Brown v. Board of Education in ruling that students have a fundamental right to equal education.

Siding with the nine students who brought the lawsuit, he ruled that California’s laws on hiring and firing in schools have resulted in “a significant number of grossly ineffective teachers currently active in California classrooms.”

Police: Teen gunman kills student at Oregon school The ASSOCIATED PRESS TROUTDALE, Ore. – A teen gunman armed with a rifle shot and killed a 14-yearold student Tuesday and injured a teacher before he likely killed himself at a high school in a quiet Columbia River town in Oregon, authorities said.

After the shooting stopped, police spotted the suspect slumped on a toilet in a bathroom at Reynolds High School. Officers used a robot with a camera to investigate and discovered the suspect was dead and that he had likely killed himself, Troutdale police spokesman Sgt. Carey Kaer said.

His victim was identified as freshman Emilio Hoffman, who was “loved by all,” police Chief Scott Anderson said at a Tuesday news conference.

He said Hoffman was found in the boys’ locker room.

A girl who used to be Hoffman’s girlfriend said he was “a good kid” and a “down-toearth guy.”

“He was very caring, he loved to joke around,” said Savannah Venegas, 16.

Hoffman lived with his mother and had an older brother and two younger

sisters, both in elementary school, Venegas said.

Anderson said he spoke with Hoffman’s family, saying they had a difficult road ahead and sought privacy.

Hoffman didn’t have enemies and “didn’t stir up trouble,” Venegas said.

“They wouldn’t have just picked him,” she said. “It had to be, just, random.”

Authorities have tentatively identified the gunman but his name is being withheld until his family is notified, Anderson said.

The teacher, Todd Rispler, had injuries that weren’t life-threatening, and he was treated at the scene. Rispler, a 50-year-old physical education instructor and former track coach, went to the office and initiated the school lockdown, Anderson said. The attack panicked students and they were told to go quietly to their classrooms.

Freshman Daniel DeLong, 15, said after the shooting that he saw a physical education teacher at the school with a bloodied shirt. He said he was texting friends to make sure they were all OK. Anderson said two on-campus police officers were the first to respond to

reports of a shooting. The officers and a tactical team sent to the school “brought this to a conclusion,” the chief said, without elaborating.

“Oregon hurts as we try to make sense of a senseless act of violence,” Gov. John Kitzhaber said in a statement.

The first reports of shots fired came around 8 a.m. on the next-to-last-day of classes.

Police initially seemed uncertain about whether there was a live shooter in the school.

Students were eventually led from the school with hands up or on their heads.

Parents and students were reunited in a supermarket parking lot.

The Reynolds School District issued a statement mourning the loss of one of its students.

Reynolds is the second-largest high school in Oregon, with about 2,800 students. The school is about 15 miles from Portland and its students come from several communities.

During the evacuation of the school, authorities found another student with a gun and he was taken into custody. That weapon and arrest were not related to the shooting, Anderson said.

How do you treat arthritis in your feet?

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis.

It affects about half of all arthritis sufferers.

When it strikes the feet, it can be particularly distressing. Although there is little soft tissue swelling, joints often become enlarged, stiff and painful. Congress moving to ensure speedier care for vets

By MATTHEW DALY and ALAN FRAM The Associated Press WASHINGTON – United in response to a national uproar, Congress is suddenly moving quickly to address military veterans’ long waits for care at VA hospitals.

The House unanimously approved legislation Tuesday to make it easier for patients enduring lengthy delays for initial visits to get VA-paid treatment from local doctors instead. The Senate was poised to vote on a similar bill within 48 hours, said Democratic leader Harry Reid.

The legislation comes close on the heels of a Veterans Affairs Department audit showing that more than 57,000 new applicants for care have had to wait at least three months for initial appointments and an additional 64,000 newly enrolled vets who requested appointments never got them.

“I cannot state it strongly enough – this is a national dis-

grace,” said Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chief author of the House legislation.

Miller made his comments minutes before the House completed the first of two votes on its measure. Lawmakers approved the bill 421-0, then re-voted a little over an hour later, making sure no one was left out on the politically important vote, with five more in favor and no one against.

Miller sheepishly admitted the reason for the second vote: He was in his office and missed the first tally.

Rep. Mike Michaud of Maine, top Democrat on the Veteran Affairs Committee, said the care that veterans receive at VA facilities is “second to none – that is, if you can get in. As we have recently learned, tens of thousands of veterans are not getting in.”

The House bill and a similar version in the Senate would spend hundreds of millions of dollars to hire more doctors and nurses, but that

“This is not a problem that is just isolated to the VA,” said Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev. “It’s out there in the community.”

are expected to become increasingly in demand as millions of people newly insured under the federal health care law start looking for regular doctors. The Association of American Medical Colleges has projected that by 2020,

there will be 45,000 too few primary care physicians, as well as a shortage of 46,000 surgeons and specialists.

Shortages tend to be worse in both rural and inner-city areas.

Nevada already has a chronic shortage of doctors, both in primary care and among specialists, Titus said.

The state ranks 46th among states and the District of Columbia for availability of general and family practitioners, she said, and 51st for surgeons.

While she voted for the bill, Titus said Congress and the Obama administration need to do more to ensure that veterans receive care in the private sector.

The American Medical Association added its voice, in Chicago, as the House was voting. At its annual policy meeting, the AMA approved a resolution urging President Barack Obama to take immediate action to enable veterans to get timely access to care from outside the VA system.

WASHINGTON – Amid complaints about lengthy waits for Social Security disability benefits, congressional investigators say nearly 200 administrative judges have been rubber-stamping claims, approving billions of dollars in lifetime payments from the cash-strapped program.

Four of the judges defended their work at a combative congressional hearing Tuesday.

They said they follow the law.

“I’ve seen their ailments,

I’ve seen their pain, right in front of me,” Judge Gerald I. Krafsur of Kingsport, Tennessee, told the House Oversight Committee.

Krafsur approved 99 percent of the cases he decided from 2005 to 2013, according to a new report by the Republican staff of the Oversight Committee.

Lifetime benefits average about $300,000, according to the report, so Krafsur’s cases will lead to nearly $1.8 billion in benefits.

Tuesday’s hearing comes as Social Security’s disability program edges toward the

brink of insolvency. The trust fund that supports the disability program is projected to run out of money in 2016. At that point, the system will collect only enough money in payroll taxes to pay 80 percent of benefits, triggering an automatic 20 percent cut in benefits.

Congress could redirect money from Social Security’s much bigger retirement program to shore up the disability program, as it did in 1994. But that would worsen the finances of the retirement program, which is facing its own longterm financial problems.

WASHINGTON – The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday it has granted the first permission for commercial drone flights over land, the latest effort by the agency to show it is loosening restrictions on commercial uses of the unmanned aircraft.

Drone maker AeroVironment of Monrovia, California, and BP energy corporation have been given permission to use a Puma drone to survey pipelines, roads and equipment at Prudhoe Bay in Alaska, the agency said. The first

flight was Sunday.

Made by AeroVironment, the Puma is a small, handlaunched craft about 4½ feet long and with a 9-foot wingspan. It was initially designed for military use.

Drones are often less expensive to operate than manned aircraft and easier to maneuver. Equipped with 3D cameras, the Puma will provide images of hard-to-reach places not currently available, BP and AeroVironment say.

Vegas gunman made no secret of extreme views

By JUSTIN PRITCHARD and KEN RITTER The Associated Press LAS VEGAS – Jerad Miller was ready to share his anti-government views with just about anyone who would listen, views that telegraphed his desire to kill police officers and his willingness to die for what he hoped would be a revolution against the government.

He told neighbors, television reporters and the Internet. Once, he threatened to attack a Nevada court while on the phone with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

If local or federal authorities were monitoring his online rants and increasingly sharp threats, they aren’t saying – not with police still investigating what triggered Miller and his wife to gun down two officers and a third man Sunday before taking their own lives.

Even if Miller had attracted the attention of law enforcement, authorities would

have initially been confined to knocking on his door and starting a conversation to try to gauge whether he was a true threat. His opinions were free speech, protected by the First Amendment. And given limited resources and rules against creating government watch lists, it would be impossible to keep tabs on everyone who actively promotes beliefs that may – or may not – turn to violence.

“We can’t go around watch-listing folks because they voice anti-government opinions, because they say law enforcement should be killed,” said detective Rob Finch, who advocates using social media to monitor extremists in his work with the Greensboro, North Carolina, police department. “There are thousands of people out there that voice these things on the Internet every day. YouTube is filled with them.”

Indeed, Miller took to Youtube and Facebook to broadcast his rhetoric.

“In this particular situation, I think we would all be kidding ourselves if we said the signs weren’t there,” Finch said.

Miller and his wife, Amanda, shot and killed two officers who were on their Sunday lunch break at a pizza parlor, then told patrons that they were starting a revolution, according to police. They went next to a nearby Wal-Mart, where Amanda Miller killed a shopper who confronted her husband before police arrived.

After a gun battle inside the store, Amanda Miller fatally shot her husband and then herself, police said.

Neither the FBI nor Las Vegas police would comment on whether they were aware of Jerad Miller’s threats, and if so whether they took any action.

While it would have been hard to pick Miller out of the sea of other extremists, he did make efforts to identify himself publicly during a spring standoff between supporters of southern Nevada rancher Cliv-

In an interview with a television reporter that aired in April, Miller said that he didn’t want an armed confrontation, but “if they are going to come

In January, Miller threatened to “shoot up” a Nevada court after he was pulled over in that state and found to have a suspended license from Indiana. The threat came at the end of a phone call to a help line of the Indiana BMV. The agency’s fraud-and-security unit contacted the Nevada Highway Patrol about the threat and provided a copy of the recording. A spokeswoman for the highway patrol had no immediate comment.

In a statement Tuesday, Bundy’s family said that the Millers were at their ranch for a few days before other protesters began to express concern about Jerad’s “aggressive nature and volatility.” Leaders of militias that had also come to the ranch asked the Millers to leave and one gave them “a few hundred dollars ... because the Millers said they had sold everything and had nothing to live on.”

Honor the flag On Saturday, we commemorate National Flag Day, the day the Second Continental Congress adopted the American flag. It was officially established by proclamation in 1916

by President Woodrow Wilson and again in 1949 by an Act of Congress.

If you’ve never demonstrated pride in your country and support for the military by displaying the flag, Saturday is a good day to begin. But whether you’re a first-time flag exhibitor or you fly one 24/7, it’s important to know that because the flag represents a living country, it comes with official guidelines for proper display and respect.

This is true whether your flag is a free downloadable and printable coloring page for the kids or a silk antique.

Guidelines from the flag code include: • Generally, where buildings and stationary flagstaffs are concerned, one only flies a flag from sunrise to sunset.

• Illuminate your flag at night if you plan to fly it round the clock.

• In bad weather, fly only flags made of all-weather material.

• Don’t drape your flag over the hood, top, sides, or back of your vehicle.

• Other flags and pennants should not fly above, at the same level or to the right of the American flag.

• The flag must never touch the ground.

Illinois digging in its heel when it comes to leg SPRINGFIELD – First those Texans took our jobs.

Then they took our money.

Now they want our leg.

Well, to be precise, General Santa Anna’s leg. But a group of Illinois soldiers stole it fair and square – back in 1845.

During the U.S. war with Mexico, Santa Anna skedaddled from the battle on a donkey and left his prosthetic leg behind in a carriage along with a bag of gold and a freshly cooked chicken.

A group of Illinois soldiers ate the chicken, gave the Army the gold and kept the leg.

One of the soldiers traveled about Illinois charging 10 cents for a peek at the appendage.

Ah, those were the days, when entrepreneurship reigned supreme in the Prairie State.

But today, we are hobbled by high taxes, crippled by debt and

Texas, on the other hand, has pulled itself up by the bootstrap.

The Lone Star State has no income tax. Its unemployment rate is among the lowest in the country. And the state is running a surplus.

And they have accomplished much of this at the expense of Illinois.

Between 1995 and 2010, $2 billion in personal income shifted from the Land of Lincoln to Lone Star State, according to “How Money Walks” by Travis Brown.

In fact, National Review noted earlier this year that a greater

percentage of people were moving out of Illinois than any other state but Rhode Island.

By contrast, Texas’ population grew 5.2 percent between 2010 and 2013 – a higher percentage than anywhere but tiny North Dakota and Washington, D.C. But, cheer up, folks. We’ve still got the leg.

And Texas wants it.

The leg is on display at the Illinois State Military Museum.

Back in April, folks at the San Jacinto Historical Museum in Texas started a White House petition drive to have the leg returned to Texas.

But Illinois is digging in its heel and not letting go.

After all, this isn’t the first time some foreign power has sought our leg.

Schools need tools to combat growing menace Too many children get a lesson in school that doesn’t belong: how being different can make them a target.

These are the estimated half of students in Illinois who say they are verbally abused or the one in four who report being physically harassed and even assaulted.

They are the often-silent victims of bullying.

It’s an epidemic that is not unique to most generations.

There always have been the kids who dress differently, who express viewpoints outside of the “accepted” norm or whose physical stature puts them for some reason in the crosshairs of those who feel a need to claim superiority.

In years past, it was called

“picking” on someone and was often dismissed with trite phrases such as “tell them to stop” or “stand up for yourself.” To others, it was a rite of passage that “made you stronger.”

Nonsense. It is demoralizing, counter-productive to learning and should not be tolerated in any environment.

The importance of parental involvement cannot be understated. Children learn from the lessons imparted at home. Teachers and administrators should not be expected to try to assume those responsibilities. However, they are a crucial first defense against bullying in schools.

A lot of schools in Illinois are hampered by bureaucracy and a lack of policies and

guidelines, though.

That’s why it’s imperative the governor signs House Bill 5707, which sits among the stack of legislation awaiting review. The bill would put more power in the hands of school officials to be able to intervene when there is a problem.

The bill would detail the appropriate interaction between school officials and parents and also direct school districts to keep statistics on the extent of bullying.

Knowing the extent of the problem is an important first step.

Giving the mechanisms and the tools to stop bullying is just as critical a component in preventing it.

Santa Anna isn’t particularly liked on either side of the border. Texans view him as the villain who led the slaughter at the Alamo.

Mexicans view him as the leader who lost much of their country’s territory to the United States.

Despite this antipathy,

he hasn’t been relegated to a historical footnote.

Throughout his time in Mexican politics, Santa Anna managed to overthrow the Mexican government, be exiled from his country and lead Mexico into a fiscal crisis 11 times.

And you thought Rod Blagojevich was bad.

But Santa Anna was worse – and I’m not pulling your leg.

Providence again proves Yogi was right Class 4A supersectional win against Edwardsville wasn’t over until it was over VIEWS Dick Goss Three years ago, Providence scored nine runs against Edwardsville in the first inning and breezed to victory in the Class 4A supersectional at the University of Illinois.

When Edwardsville’s first six batters reached base in Monday’s supersectional between the same schools on the same diamond, déjà vu in reverse was in the offing.

“The way the game started, I told the coaches maybe they’re going to put a 9-spot up on us,” Providence coach Mark Smith said.

But after five batters, Smith summoned senior right-hander Jake Godfrey to relieve starter Brent Villasenor. A couple of hours later, Smith said, “I think I owe Jake a steak dinner or something.”

The swing of emotions in a high school baseball game can be dizzying. Things that absolutely cannot happen do happen, anyway.

This Edwardsville team was for real. Right-hander Daniel Lloyd entered the game with an ERA of 0.43.

He is a master at changing speeds and keeping hitters off-balance.

The Celtics, on the other hand, not only experienced a nightmarish start, but some of it was of their own making.

They made two errors in the first inning, five in all, and were fortunate not to fall behind by more than 3-0 in the top of the first.

Cam Galgano delivered a two-run double in the sixth inning and Dylan Rosa capped Providence’s 6-5 victory with a three-run walkoff double in the seventh.

The Celtics did not play well, they trailed a solid opponent all day and yet they lived to play in the 4A state tournament this weekend at Silver Cross Field, proving again that Yogi Berra was right – It

“To be honest, when we came we were too tense,” Galgano said. “For the most part, before this game, we had been making plays and playing looser than we were early in the year.”

“I talked to the boys around the fourth or fifth inning,” Smith said. “I kicked them in the butt. I told them to relax.

“Cam’s double got us back in the game. I’m proud of the way we battled back.”

by Atlanta Braves on Saturday in the 21st round of the major league free-agent draft, wound up pitching a complete game – in relief. Yes, he went seven full innings, allowing two hits and two unearned runs. He did it without trying to blow hitters away. “[Villasenor] did his best.

He tried,” Godfrey said “I went as far as I could. I took off some [velocity]. I definitely was coming out if we went extra innings.”

Godfrey had tossed a completed game Thursday to beat Sandburg and threw a significant number of pitches in the process. So, the plan was to use Villasenor for three or four innings and then go to Godfrey. But the way it played out, Smith could not afford to let Edwardsville get too far ahead.

Godfrey has not had the type of season expected from

one of the top-rated preseason prospects in the Midwest.

He said his decision about where he will be next season is made.

“I’m going to LSU,” he said. “Whether I signed [a professional contract] depended on where I got drafted. I’m happy with going to LSU.” And, he’s happy to be in line to pitch the 4A state championship game. Rosa,

who has been huge for the Celtics (26-14) at the plate and on the mound throughout the playoffs, will start at 3 p.m.

Friday against Prairie Ridge (24-16). It’s not often two 4A semifinal foes have 30 combined losses.

However, if you believe you know how any given baseball game will play out, you haven’t been paying attention. Still, many followers of Illinois high school baseball feel a Providence vs. St. Rita all-Catholic League title game Saturday night might happen.

Imagine Godfrey’s emotions when he takes the mound, should that game occur.

After Galgano’s two-run double had gotten the Celtics within 4-3 of Edwardsville, Smith talked with his righthander.

“Jake said, ‘Don’t take the ball away from me. You’re not taking me out,’ ” Smith said.

“TJ shuts down other teams’ running games,” Braun said. “He is close to 1.8 seconds to second base, which is pretty darn good.”

Jimenez is planning to attend Illinois Wesleyan next school year. Condon is taking classes this summer and playing occasionally with an adult wood-bat team. If he has his classroom work in order, he could be moving on to a fouryear school after next season.

“He’s getting some looks already and will get more,” Braun said. “TJ has put all of his heart into baseball. Even now in the summer, he is working out a lot. What he did this season was spectacular.”

Condon said he was surprised at the awards, especially the Gold Glove.

“I knew I was solid behind the plate, but really, I just go out and play,” he said. “I’m happy to be the first JJC catcher to win the Gold Glove. I’m happy because I did it all for my team and coaches.”

When it comes to baseball, Condon refuses to be outworked.

“I have been working hard,” Condon said. “To receive honors like these, that pushes me that extra little bit.

“But those are individual awards. Next year I want to help bring the team further.”

The Wolves had high hopes for a trip to the D-III World Series at Tyler, Texas, but fell just short. Condon’s goal is to help rectify that.

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College associate head coach Gregg Braun, who works with the pitchers and catchers, called catcher TJ Condon to his office.

The news was too exciting to relay over the phone.

“It was pretty awesome,” Condon said. “That’s how I found out. Coach [Braun] called and told me he wanted to tell me in person, so he had me come to his office.”

The message was that Condon, a Minooka graduate, not only was named a first-team NJCAA Division III All-American, but he also won the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award for catchers. His former Minooka teammate, JJC pitcher Josh Jimenez, was picked on the third team All-American.

The Wolves, through the years, have had their share of All-Americans, including several first-team selections.

In fact, Brandon Howard (Coal City) was chosen as Division III Player of the Year in 2008 and Luke Andrade (Lincoln-Way West) received that supreme honor in 2012.

Past Gold Glove winners were first basemen Alex McCluskey (Joliet Township) in 2009 and Brett Van Asdlen (Minooka) in 2010. However, Condon has the distinction of being the first JJC catcher to receive the Gold Glove.

Other All-America catchers for the Wolves were Mark Gotts (Lockport) in 1994, Mark Raciti (Morris) in 1996 and Brendan Loughrey in 1999.

Raciti was a first-team pick while Gotts and Loughrey were named to the second team. Gotts became a firstteam All-American as an outfielder in 1995.

Condon has a season remaining at JJC. He finished this spring with a .418 batting average. His 64 hits included 14 doubles, seven triples, three home runs and 43 RBIs. He posted a .660 slugging percentage and .471 on-base percent-

Lemont’s Latz, Papierski together even in draft

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – From the age of eight, Jake Latz and Mike Papierski have been linked together on the baseball field.

Over the years, their trek has taken the duo from travel teams to Lemont High School to future college commitments to Louisiana State University.

So what were the odds that both would be selected by the same team on the same day in the MLB draft?

As it turns out, pretty good.

While competing for the Indians in Saturday’s Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Sectional final, Latz and Papierski were selected by the Toronto Blue Jays, Latz in the 11th round with the 324th overall pick and Papierski in the 16th round with the 474th pick.

In the process, they became the first Lemont players to be drafted directly out of high school, according to school officials.

“That was really amazing,” Latz said. “First the same high school, then the same college and now drafted by the same team.”

For both, the thought of having their name called in the draft and competing at the highest level has been on their minds for a while.

“That’s been my dream, to play Major League Baseball,” said Papierski, who was told by teammate Jake Terrazas that he was picked.

Latz concurred.

Both have excelled on the field this spring for Lemont, which is headed to the state semifinals this weekend for the first time in program history.

Going into Monday’s supersectional, Latz was 8-0 with a

0.28 ERA, striking out 94 batters while allowing only 25 hits in 50 innings. He upped that mark to 9-0 after yielding an unearned run in 51⁄3 innings against De La Salle.

For his high school career, Latz is 16-2 with three saves and 248 strikeouts in 145 innings.

Papierski, who went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and two RBIs Monday, entered the contest hitting .396 with 10 doubles, seven home runs, 24 RBIs and 27 walks.

“It’s one thing to get a college scholarship,” Lemont coach Brian Storako said, “and it’s a whole other thing to get

drafted by a major league team.

They’ve worked hard for it and they deserve it and they are moving forward to bigger and better things.”

As for the decision whether to head to LSU or sign with the Blue Jays, that is expected to come some time after high school.

Police against Fire annual golf matches set to tee off

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A little more than a decade ago, Rick Raasch of the Joliet Police Department sat down with his friend Terry Mangun of the Joliet Fire Department.

They discussed forming a golf competition where the police and firemen could raise money for charities of their choice. They weren’t sure how well it would work, but

they decided to give it a shot.

Look at what it has become.

On Wednesday and Thursday at Inwood, the 11th annual Joliet Police vs. Joliet Fire Ryder Cup matches will be played. The Wednesday format calls for a three-man scramble in the morning and alternate shot in the afternoon. On Thursday, one-onone matches are on the docket.

The event has raised more than $91,000 for charity

through the years, so bringing the total more than the $100,000 mark is a realistic target this year. The Fire is playing for the Illinois Youth Burn Camps and the Police are playing for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The festivities conclude Thursday with the annual hamburger night at Moran A.C. beginning at 5 p.m.

“We welcome people out to watch the competition and to attend the hamburger night,”

Raasch said. “This isn’t like other golf outings, it’s a true competition. At the same time, the camaraderie is there between the policemen and firemen.”

Handicaps were added last year to help balance the competition. This year, each team will have 22 golfers. Previously, each side had 16.

“With the handicap in place, and more guys wanting to get involved, we were able to expand it,” Raasch

said. “Without the handicap system, some guys couldn’t really compete. But we still are trying to match guys up as close as we can.

“What’s really nice is with the expansion, we have retirees who will play. You get to see some of the guys you haven’t seen in a while.”

Team captains are Raasch and Rick Chizmark for the Police and Mangun, John Stachelski and Ed Kolenc for the Fire.

The lineup is set with the outfield revamp having been completed. Isom said a lineup with Jose Garcia, Marquis Riley, Russell Moldenhauer, Adam Giacalome and Grant DeBruin in the 1 through 5 spots and recent additions Chad Stang and Corey Keller in the bottom half, along with the catcher and Max Casper, will produce.

“I feel very comfortable with what we have now,” Isom said. “We may have to play a little more small ball until we start hitting, but we’ll get there.

“It’s a good thing we had Moldenhauer last weekend.

He’s very important to our lineup. And before we added Stang and Keller, we thought we were 1-2 runs away from our opponents on a regular basis. Those two being in the lineup has made a difference of 1-2 runs a game, and they’re not even hitting yet.”

After Wednesday night’s doubleheader, the Slammers and Beach Bums conclude their series Thursday night.

The Slammers travel to Washington to face the Wild Things during the weekend – while the Class 4A and 3A high school state tournaments are played at Silver Cross Field – and return Tuesday to begin a series against the Normal CornBelters.

In his first full year as a professional, Marquess Wilson gained weight, experience and knowledge.

The 6-3 receiver reported to the Bears’ organized team activities, which resumes today at Halas Hall, at 207 pounds, having added bulk and explosiveness after participating in Brandon Marshall’s offseason workouts in South Florida.

As a rookie, he learned not to complain – and how to block.

The result is a new comfort level, both with Marc Trestman’s scheme and with himself.

“It’s better from last year, because last year I was thinking a lot on the field,” he said.

“This year I can just play.

“I feel freer on the field. It just feels good.”

The Bears are counting on it.

Despite catching only two passes last season, he’s penciled in as the team’s No. 3 receiver behind Pro Bowlers Alshon Jeffery and Marshall.

“If I know my role and if I know the plays, I shouldn’t feel pressure on myself,” the seventh-round pick from Washington State said. “I can’t play with pressure. I’ve got to play with confidence.”

If he doesn’t, the Bears have a backup plan.

The team signed veterans Josh Morgan and Domenik Hixon to push Wilson and, in Devin Hester’s absence, compete to return kicks.

When Hixon tore his ACL the first day of OTAs, the Bears added two receivers/ returners with a combined 14 years’ experience: Armanti Edwards and Micheal Spurlock.

Wilson, however, is one of only two backup receivers to ever play a snap for the Bears.

The other, special teamer Eric Weems, has only three catches in two years with the team.

Wideout Chris Williams, the kick return favorite, was added to the roster from the Saints practice squad in Week 17. He said the Bears’

JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers have not exactly been tearing the cover off the ball so far this season.

Of course, they have company throughout the Frontier League.

“That’s been a topic of conversation among the managers and general managers in the league,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said as he prepared for a night off Tuesday, because of a rainout at Silver Cross Field. “As soon as you say our team isn’t hitting, someone else will say they have the same issue.

“We came to the conclusion that the pitching is well ahead of the offense so far.

In the offseason, we were all talking about getting bats. But the major league clubs still were not releasing hitters at the end of their spring training, at the end of March.”

The Slammers (9-12) will entertain the Traverse City Beach Bums in two seven-inning games beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Joliet swept a three-game weekend series against River City, outscoring the Rascals, 8-3, in the three games combined.

Pitching rules.

“Our pitching was outstanding all last week, even when we got no-hit and then lost that 17-inning game at Southern Illinois,” Isom said.

“I like what we’ve been seeing even though no starter had a victory until our first game [last weekend] against River City.

“River City is the No. 1 offensive team in the league and we allowed two earned runs in three games against them. We’re just not getting a lot of offense right now, but our pitching is keeping us in games.”

Isom said the players have kept things on an even keel, after they lost 12 of 15 and then after sweeping the Rascals.

“This is a little more of everything thrown at you at once,” he said. “But yeah, it’s very similar.”

Morgan, meanwhile, has spent OTAs trying to learn every receiver spot – and trying to expunge the 49ers’ and Redskins’ plays from his memory.

“I’m new here, trying to erase all the playbooks that I had in my head, out of my head,” said Morgan, who turns 29 later this month.

“Learn all this. Even though some of the stuff may be the same, you still gotta erase that terminology and learn this terminology.”

One season removed from leading the Redskins with 48 receptions, Morgan will likely have to play special teams to stick with the Bears. He returned eight punts and 12 kickoffs last season.

“It’s like being a rookie

all over again,” Morgan said.

“Coming out here, you just have to prove yourself all over again. Just have to prove you can play this game.

“Just gotta go out here with that rookie mentality, like, ‘I gotta make the team.’”

Morgan said the Bears’ coaches are “on top of it more than any place I’ve ever been,” and that Trestman’s personality was disarming.

“I’ve never had a head coach as personal as him,” Morgan said. “He’ll come sit at the table with you. He’ll talk with you, ask you about your day, ask you about your family and everything.

“It’s very refreshing to have a guy that actually practices what he preaches.”

Just as Morgan will lean on Trestman, he’ll seek out Bears veterans for advice.

That includes Wilson.

“Everybody that’s been here before,” he said. “I’m basically a sponge right now, trying to suck up all the knowledge I can and apply it on the field.”

Rizzo’s big game leads to Cubs victory over Pirates PITTSBURGH – Anthony Rizzo homered, doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead the Cubs over the Pirates 7-3 Tuesday night, spoiling Gregory Polanco’s much-anticipated debut.

Rizzo hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Francisco Liriano, who left in the fourth with discomfort on his right side. Rizzo also doubled and scored in the fourth and hit an RBI double in the seventh, a drive to deep right-center that struck Polanco’s left wrist as the touted rookie tried to make the catch.

Polanco went 1 for 5 after getting called up from Tri-

ple-A Indianapolis, where the right fielder was leading the International League with a .347 batting average and 49 RBIs in 62 games.

Pinch-hitter Luis Valbuena’s two-run double off Casey Sadler (0-1) broke a 3-all tie and put the Cubs ahead for good.

Travis Wood (6-5) allowed three runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings.

Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, his ninth of the season and fifth in nine June games.

Valbuena and Junior Lake each had two hits for the Cubs, as did Pittsburgh’s Russell Martin and Starling Marte.

Joliet man is self-made expert on Joliet’s brewing history

OLIET – Like many people in the 1970s, John Bittermann of Joliet collected beer cans.

But when a friend offered Bittermann a mug that the Fred Sehring Brewing Company in Joliet released in 1906, a stunned Bittermann asked, “There were breweries in Joliet?”

Bittermann then embarked on a decades-long fascination with Joliet’s brewery history, one that has produced an extensive collection of beer-related paraphernalia and a comprehensive look at an industry that helped shape Joliet, as well as the entire country, he said.

“Everyone can relate to beer. Unlike wine, it’s the common man’s drink, the working man’s drink,” Bittermann said. “Adams was a brewer; Washington was a brewer; Jefferson was a brewer. It goes back to the Mayflower; you can look it up – ‘our victuals being much spent, especially our beere.’ The Pilgrims headed toward the coast because they were out of food and beer.”

On July 17, Bittermann will give a presentation at the Joliet Area Historical Museum on “The Architecture & History of the Joliet Brewery Buildings.” Bittermann will discuss the layouts and plans of the brewery buildings; the growth of the brewery buildings throughout the years; when the breweries were built, by who, and at what cost; what happened to the brewery buildings after they closed; and what exists at the locations today.

What made beer so attractive to Joliet residents of the 19th and early 20th centuries?

The processing of beer made it especially desirable as a beverage, a way to prevent

dysentery and cholera, consequences of contaminated water, Bittermann said.

“It was served at dinner to children,” Bittermann said.

“People had heavy stouts at breakfast to nourish them.

Nursing mothers were encouraged to drink it. Breweries were among the first industries to be set up, not just in Joliet, but in the nation. Just about any place you had water and could grow grain, you could make beer.”

And in Joliet, people did.

Porter’s ale, stouts and porters were popular with the Irish, Bittermann said, while Joliet’s German and Slavic population were fans of Fred Sehring beer. Prohibition was actually beneficial to Joliet breweries.

“We were just far enough of out Chicago to be ignored,” Bittermann said, “but not so far that we could send things and not be noticed.”

Most of Bittermann’s information about Joliet’s brewing history came from old local newspapers archived at the Joliet Public Library, he said.

“I would go there every Monday night for three to four hours, just scrolling through microfilm,” Bittermann said.

“I have read through 70 percent of them.”

An 1862 advertisement for Porter Ale promotes the idea that his stock ale – delivered in two, three and five gallon demijohns – is expressly for family use and guaranteed to be kept “fresh and nice.”

In a second advertisement – from Aug. 30, 1862 – Porter promised to pay the highest price for prime barley delivered to his Bluff Street Brewery. One mystery brewer, known as G. Simpson Phoenix, has no address except a Joliet P.O. Box, Bittermann said.

Yet, Bittermann deduced, that company advertised home delivery in a Joliet

“All we know is the name, the P.O. Box and the fact he made deliveries in Joliet,”

Bittermann said. “The rest is lost to time.”

Like many of today’s businesses, Joliet brewers promoted their business through free merchandise. Bittermann’s Joliet brewery collection is replete with these items: mugs, glasses with etched logos, calendars, signs, tappers, cigar cutters, change purses, matchboxes with grooves for striking matches, and wood cases that held both pencils and combs. Bittermann also collects beer barrels, wood boxes for shipping beer.

“They’re cool, old pieces that represent a time and an industry that is long since

gone,” Bittermann said.

When drinking beer, Bittermann prefers heavy, dark beer. With the help of friends, Bittermann has made beer as a home brewer. He attends beer-related shows and events, as well as beer-tasting festivals.

Bittermann said the vendors he meets at those events are the friendliest people in the world, willing to talk to anybody, anytime. Of course, Bittermann often is one of those vendors.

“I bring stuff to sell,” Bittermann said with a smile, “so I have money to buy more stuff.”

Some bridge experts are like that, playing almost by instinct.

Others grind it out, calculating the correct actions. The less capable tend to react almost subconsciously, making the “natural” play without time for analysis. It would be a great idea for almost everyone to slow down.

In this deal, for example, look at the North and East hands.

Against four spades, West leads the club queen. How should East plan the defense?

West was aggressive in raising to two clubs, but he had a singleton and liked the favorable vulnerability. North’s three-club advance was a modern cue-bid raise. It guaranteed at least three-card spade support and a minimum of game-invitational values. South had sufficient high-card power to jump to game.

The defenders need four tricks.

East can anticipate two clubs and one spade, but where is the other winner?

ADVICE Woman’s texts to her ex threaten marriage Dear Abby: I’m a twice-divorced woman who found my present husband late in life. I’m in my early 60s, and my husband is in his 70s. We married quickly because I didn’t want to be alone in life and I thought I loved him.

My husband works while I stay at home because of a medical condition. Because I get bored, I spend some of my time communicating with and texting male friends from the past and one of my ex-husbands.

We have fun texting and sometimes it goes a little beyond that.

I realize I am married and my ex is engaged, but how harmful can this be? I don’t think I’m hurting anyone, and it helps the day go by.

Whether your husband and your ex’s fiancee would consider it cheating is the question. If they got wind of your “pastime,” I suspect both would be hurt, angry and feel violated. Not only that, you could lose Husband No. 3.

Dear Abby: My 2-year-old daughter has recently become boob-obsessed. The first thing she does in the morning is point at my chest and say, “Boobs!” If she hugs me, she tries to grab them. Sometimes I catch her staring at my chest in fascination.

I never taught her the word

“boob” and feel annoyed that she probably learned it from our sitter. When I spoke to the sitter about it, she laughed and said it’s perfectly normal and that a lot of kids are boob-obsessed.

Dear Creeped Out: Children have been known to act out to get attention. If a parent acts shocked at something the child does or says, the child will repeat the action for its shock value. Mediterranean diet is the healthy way to go Dear Doctor K: I want to go on a diet and am trying to decide between low-fat, low-carb and Mediterranean. What do you think?

Dear Reader: Your first two options – low-fat and low-carb – are too simple. There are “good” fats and “bad” fats, and “good” carbs and “bad” carbs. You don’t want a diet that is low in good fats or good carbs. You want a diet that is low in bad fats and bad carbs.

A good diet should provide plenty of choices and few restrictions. It should be as good for your heart, bones, brain and colon as for your waistline. And it should be something you can sustain for years.

• Low-fat. Fat contains nine calories per gram while carbohydrates contain four. Therefore, a low-fat diet might make it easier to keep your daily calorie count down. Calories, and the unhealthy weight gain they can trigger, are definitely something you want to control. But just controlling your calories doesn’t guarantee your diet is healthy. They have to be the right calories.

There are three problems with low-fat diets. The first is that you don’t take in enough good fats.

The second is that low-fat diets tend to be less filling and flavorful than other diets, and this lessens

Third, low-fat diets turn out to be high-carb diets. You substitute carbs for the fats you’ve chosen not to eat. Unfortunately, many people who put themselves on a low-fat diet consume not just more carbs but more bad carbs.

These highly processed carbs, such as white bread and white rice, are rapidly digested, causing more hunger – and higher blood sugar levels. Instead, choose good carbs – whole-grain, fiber-rich carbs.

• Low-carb. People on low-carb (high-protein and fat) diets do often consume fewer calories, resulting in weight loss. But most people cannot sustain a low-carb diet. If you choose a low-carb diet, select one that allows you to eat nutritious (but carb-rich) fruits and vegetables.

Which brings me to what I regard as the winner: the Mediterranean diet. I’ll bet that doesn’t surprise a regular reader of this

column.

• Mediterranean style. These diets contain moderate amounts of healthy fats, most of them from olive and canola oils, fish and nuts. The carbs in this diet come from unrefined, fiber-rich wholewheat and beans. Mediterranean diets are also rich in fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and fish, with only modest amounts of meat and cheese. The Mediterranean-style diet has been shown to reduce the risk of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and of premature death.

If you find diets too restrictive, follow these five principles of healthy eating. They can help you improve your health and lose weight along the way: 1. Cut down on refined carbs.

2. Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

3. Increase plant oils and fish in your diet.

4. Eat only moderate amounts of low-fat dairy products and nuts.

5. Limit portion size and total calories.

Teen worries college will be extension of high school Dr. Wallace: I’m just finishing my junior year in high school. I get good grades and will be attending Indiana University after graduation.

My problem is that I don’t enjoy being a high school student. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t dislike my high school; it’s just that being in school doesn’t give me a thrill.

I know I’ll be going to IU because my high school grades are good and my parents expect me to be a college graduate. Both of my parents graduated from IU. My concern now is that I’m not quite sure what to expect when I start at the university. Are colleges and universities simply an extension of high school or is there a difference?

Good friends and the chance to participate in athletics were what made Emerson special for me.

College was very different and definitely not an extension of high school. I lived on campus and participated in athletics, but I spent more time studying because I knew that good grades were important if I wanted to reach my goal of becoming a high school teacher and a varsity basketball coach. I reached that goal after receiving a master’s degree in education at Northern Illinois University.

‘Bicycling With Moliere’: A buddy comedy on its surface

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post From Laurel and Hardy to Felix Unger and Jack Klugman to the ladies of “The Heat,” the odd couple formula has generated untold hours of entertainment. You can add Gauthier and Serge to the list; they’re the main characters in Philippe Le Guay’s delightful “Bicycling With Moliere,” which is both about Moliere’s play “The Misanthrope” and a loose adaptation of the satire.

Expertly coiffed and Frenchly scarfed, Gauthier Valance (Lambert Wilson) looks like the type of man who usually gets what he wants. As the star of the fictitious hit television show about a MacGyver-like surgeon, “Dr. Morange,” he’s the Gallic equivalent of Mark Harmon from “NCIS.” Everyone’s mother loves him. Unfortunately for Gauthier, Serge (Fabrice Luchini) is no one’s mother.

The retired actor has exiled himself to the windy and soggy Isle of Re. Gauthier travels there, hoping to convince Serge to play Philinte in a stage adaptation of “The Misanthrope.”

At first Serge flat-out refuses, and then he waffles, clearly coveting the starring role of Alceste, which Gauthier has reserved for himself. So, the two strike a deal. Serge tells Gauthier to stay on the island for a few days so they can rehearse together, alternating roles. If it seems like they might create Moliere magic, Serge will take a break from retirement. If not, Gauthier can return to the big city and Serge will get back to painting female nudes while living in his dilapidated manse with a malfunctioning septic system.

Luchini and Wilson are fantastic in their roles, creating a rapport that’s pleasingly argumentative but (almost) never mean. They randomly launch into dialogue from the play the way a polyglot might slip in and out of various languages, sometimes while riding bikes around the island (hence the title).

At first it seems as if Serge is a no-brainer for the title character, given his mercurial personality and singular moral code. Gauthier, seemingly harmless, also appears

But as the movie progresses, it becomes clear that both men exhibit elements of both characters. Serge may push people away, but he’s always sad to see them go.

And beneath Gauthier’s accommodating exterior lies a bit of volcanic activity.

Meanwhile, a parade of pleasant characters drift in and out of the two men’s lives, from an opinionated recent divorcee to an aspiring porn star looking for acting tips. And while there are some farcical moments, there’s also a naturalism to the proceedings.

At one point, Gauthier punches someone and immediately grabs his hand in agony, which is both realistic and funny.

It’s after this demoralizing incident that Gauthier returns to a particularly poignant moment in the play and delivers the scene in a completely new way. Since the characters rehearse the same lines over and over, the audience gets to see how the meaning changes based on what the men have recently experienced.

This may be a buddy comedy on its surface, but “Bicycling With Moliere” also gives some insight into the way art imitates life, and also the way life informs art.

• “Bicycling with Moiere” received three out of four stars. The film is unrated and contains strong language, including sexually frank discussions.

It is in French with subtitles and runs 104 minutes.

The two appointed candidates were required to collect 51 signatures for nominating petitions, Will County Democratic Party Chairman Scott Pyles said. The party was able to fill most of the County Board vacancies, he said, but not District 11, which goes into parts of south Naperville in Will County, as well as DuPage and Wheatland townships. They were only able to fill one of two vacancies for districts 2 and 5.

“We try to be competitive with all the County Board districts,” Pyles said.

A Plainfield teacher and a Frankfort small business owner have been appointed

by Will County Democrats to run for County Board in the November election.

Donald Keane of Frankfort will appear on the ballot for the Will County Board’s District 2 against Republicans Cory Singer, a former board member, and Jim Moustis of Frankfort, the board’s Republican caucus chair. Singer is running for County Board after losing his bid for county executive in 2012.

Board member David Izzo, R-Tinley Park, is not seeking re-election for District 2,

which covers parts of Frankfort, New Lenox and Homer townships.

In District 5, Sheila Raddatz, a teacher and 10-year resident of Plainfield, will run alongside Democrat Reed Bible of Plainfield, against one Republican candidate, Darren Bennefield. Bennefield, a former Wheatland Township Board trustee, was recently appointed by the County Board’s Republican caucus following the resignation of Lee Ann Goodson earlier this year.
