Joliet school officials break ground for new student center

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It was a daily struggle for Alejandro Guzman to climb stairs to the cafeteria on the fourth floor at Joliet Central High School.

Now Guzman, high school senior and student council president, can look forward to the relocation of the cafeteria to a more accessible location at the new student center. The building will expand cafeteria seating from 350 to more than 500, offer more collaboration spaces and provide what school officials call a “21st century learning environment.”

On Monday, Guzman and several school officials expressed their excitement for the new building at a groundbreaking ceremony for the beginning of construction.

“It is a bittersweet moment knowing that the building will be awesome and also knowing that I will graduate before the building is complete,” he said.

Since last fall, school officials have been developing the student center in three phases.

The $28 million construction project is being funded through bonds and slated to end in spring 2016.

The Infant Childcare Center was relocated out of the Little Theatre building to Collins Street and the Little Theatre itself was demolished in early February. Construction of the student center is expected to begin during the 2014 school year.

At Monday’s ceremony, Roth said while the main focus of the project is to provide a modern learning environment, the historical integrity of the 112-yearold building will also be preserved. The galleria space will have the same limestone facade as the rest of the building.

“As architects, it was also our goal not only to be sensitive to the historic architecture of the buildings – the collegiate Gothic design – but also to celebrate its many design features throughout the addition,” Roth said.

Besides a new cafeteria, students can expect a bookstore, technology help desk counter, security entrance, collaboration spaces and a galleria connection that will be attached to the east side of the school.

The galleria will have natural lighting elements, a student lounge and more collaboration spaces with technology charging stations.

growing adult student population rendering the Shorewood location no longer necessary.

All programs served at the Shorewood location, 247 Brook Forest Ave., will be served at the St. Charles Borromeo Center. The majority of students who use the Shorewood location should experience little to no disruption to their studies. Courses will be offered through fall semester 2014 at the Shorewood location.

Lockport Police Department finds ways to meet with public

bstanley@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – As the Lockport Police Department tries to better engage the community, it recently offered two young visitors a look behind the scenes.

Brothers Dominic Longo and Marco Longo were given a full tour of the station last week by officers Kevin Brauch and Marty Hamilton.

The tour was an add-in after their mother, Molly, won for them a ride to school in a police car last month in a fundraiser for St. Dennis School.

Hamilton started the tour with the memorial at the front door that serves as a reminder of the dangers of police work, but the mood lightened with the nearby red telephone that can summon officers after business hours.

“It is officially called the Bat phone by everyone working here,” Hamilton told the boys, who know their superheroes.

But police officers are human beings, and the boys were soon comparing sports injuries with Officer Stephen Boe, who was working in the front office on light duty. After greeting Chief Terry Lemming with “fist bumps,” the boys were taken into the staff kitchen, workout area, motor pool and armory where they got to play with a riot shield.

Molly Longo watched proudly as her sons wanted to spend more time behind bars in the holding cell.

“I think this gives them a good perspective on what the police do. I’m glad they’re not just seeing [officers] when something happens,” she said.

On the other side of police work, Brauch and Hamilton also are meeting with community groups for “Stranger-Danger” talks with kids and scam awareness for adults.

“There’s a definite increase in rip-offs once the weather gets warmer and more [con artists] will go door-to-door,” Brauch said, adding that police take a report of some in-person, phone or online scam at least once a week.

Brauch said while all ages can fall victim to scammers, the elderly frequently are targeted. One Lockport senior recently lost $60,000 to “claiming prizes” in contests relatives said she hadn’t entered.

offer the free presentation, which lasts about an hour, to any interested group. Presentations can be arranged by calling Brauch at 815-8382132.

An informal setting to approach officers with concerns or questions is “Coffee With The Cops.” Lockport police held the first meeting

last month at the Gladys Fox Museum and are scheduled to host another from 8 to 10 a.m.

“It’s just another chance for us to talk with residents about what we’re doing and hear about any issues they have,” Brauch said.

“It was brought to our attention there have been a lot of [pedestrians] ignoring the gates and crossing the tracks at 13th and State streets,” Brauch said.

“We didn’t know this was an issue, but officers have now been watching to see if this is an issue and we’re showing more of a presence there to make sure everyone is safe,” he said.

Tribute to the Troops visits Plainfield Group dedicated to keeping alive the memories of fallen soldiers

He wanted to be a soldier.

Meari lost his life Nov. 1, 2010, when he stepped in front of an explosives-laden Army Pfc. m o t o r c y c l e Andrew to shield his Meari platoon while returning from patrol in Afghanistan.

Tribute to the Troops, a motorcycle organization that honors the families of fallen soldiers, paid homage Friday to Pfc. Meari at the home of his mother and stepfather, Denise and Jerry Meehan.

Country singer Rockie Lynne, who co-founded the group in 2004, stressed the importance of connecting with the families of the fallen.

“At first there’s a lot of at-

tention, but after a while it becomes pretty desolate sitting down at the dinner table,” Lynne said. “This is to tell them that their loved ones, their sons and families are not forgotten.”

In Plainfield, Lynne recounted the story of Meari’s 21 years on Earth. He told family members and the group’s riders how, as a young boy, Meari visited Arlington National Cemetery with his mother.

“Andrew was obviously very moved by the experience,” Lynne said. “And he said, ‘Mom, I’m going to be a soldier.’”

A few years later, Meari and his mother met then-Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, Lynne said. Meari asked Daley how he became mayor.

Daley replied that first he became a lawyer.

“After that, he told his mother, ‘I want to be a soldier, and then I’m going to be a lawyer,” Lynne said.

And while waiting to be old enough to join the military, he worked three part-time jobs.

After joining the Army, Meari took assessment tests to see where he was best qualified to serve.

“He didn’t just ace the test, he nailed it,” Lynne said.

With his high intelligence and language skills – he already knew Arabic and other

languages – Meari could have had just about any posting he desired.

He chose to be in the infantry, serving in 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

“He said he wanted to be a ‘real soldier’ first,” Lynne said.

In addition to the Meehans, the group planned to visit Gold Star families in Palos Hills, Chicago Ridge, Mount Greenwood, Pullman and Rog-

ers Park over the weekend, said Skip Hermann, assistant chairman of the Tribute to the Troops’ Illinois chapter.

About 20 riders on more than a dozen motorcycles visited the Meehans at their home near Caton Farm and County Line roads.

Tribute to the Troops was founded in 2004 by Lynne, who wrote a song called “Home” about those who lost their lives in the war on terror. Lynne started visiting families of fallen soldiers following the first Iraq War casualty from his home state of Minnesota.

Since its founding, the group has opened new chapters in Illinois, Oregon and North Carolina. Bikers at Friday’s event came from all over the Midwest, Hermann said.

In addition to honor visits, the group provides education grants to families of soldiers who died from post traumatic stress disorder.

Dresden Station finds tritium leak on-site

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The search for a tritium leak at the Dresden Generating Station in Morris entered its third day Monday.

Evidence of a leak turned up Saturday when environmental officials identified tritiated water in one of the Morris facility’s water storage tanks.

As of Monday, the tritium contamination was contained to on-site water only, meaning drinking water and surrounding waterways are tritium-free. Exelon officials notified state and federal

regulatory offices of the leak Sunday.

“We’re working around the clock right now to pinpoint the source of this leak,” Dresden site communications manager Bob Osgood said Monday.

The station’s last tritium leak was in 2009.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, drinking tritiated water could lead to cancer as the radioactive liquid goes directly into soft tissues and organs.

People are exposed to microscopic amounts of tritium daily, however, prolonged exposure can increase the risk of cancer.

The EPA claims tritium is “one of the least dangerous radionuclides” as it emits

very low energy radiation and leaves the body relatively quickly – usually in about one month’s time.

Osgood assured local residents their water was safe since the leak has been contained on-site. He added that Dresden employees were not at risk and could safely continue their work.

“This poses no negative impact to the public or to our employees,” Osgood said.

Tritium was discovered Saturday at Dresden’s waste water treatment facility where water from the plant is cleaned, disinfected and discharged into the Kankakee

River.

Dresden has 83 environmental monitoring wells and an environmental team constantly observing water quality, according to a news release from the station.

Several crews are working to excavate the area around the tank, find the location of the leak and make repairs before the leak does further damage.

“We are keeping our commitment to and are firm believers in sharing new tritium findings with the public,” Dresden site vice president Shane Marik said in the release.

Board considers downtown redevelopment

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Mayor Tim Baldermann said a new developer for several spots in downtown New Lenox could attract businesses of a huge interest to the community.

Baldermann introduced to the village board Monday a plan to buy several properties along Route 30 for about $1 million less than what a past developer offered. The properties would give village officials the opportunity to redevelop the downtown area and build a new train station.

“We do have the most dilapidated train station on the line,” he said. “Part of the reason for that – all kidding aside – is that it was designated a historical landmark and so we’re limited in what can be done with it.”

For about $2.8 million total, the village would acquire four properties on East Maple Road, assign them to a new developer and use the sales tax – plus other revenue sources – to build the station.

Not much discussion about the proposal took place at Monday’s meeting but board members plan to continue discussions at a June 23 board meeting.

A BP gas station, a dry cleaner business, the closed House of Hughes restaurant and the Pit Stop bar are located on the properties the village wants to buy. Baldermann said he hopes to have the areas cleared and new businesses running by fall 2015.

“Maybe other businesses down the corridor will see what can be done and will join in on doing some improvements to their property, as well.”

The previous developer was going to buy the properties for about $3.8 million and possibly seek sales tax abatement from the village as an incentive, he said. But now village officials can buy them at a lesser price and sign the properties to a new developer without needing to provide an incentive, he said.

Board trustee Annette Bowden was enthusiastic about redeveloping the area.

On Monday, Blackmon pleaded guilty to organizing a scheme that ripped off thouOtis sands of dolBlackmon lars from local banks. From

August 2010 to September 2013, Blackmon recruited people on Facebook to open accounts at Chase and West Suburban banks.

“When Blackmon linked those accounts together, he was able to exploit a deficiency in Chase’s security system,” Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Dant Foulk said.

Blackmon and his accomplices would withdraw money from one account before the banks reported there weren’t sufficient funds to make the transfer. Banks sent overdraft notices, but did not seek

charges against the account holders until they realized more than $100,000 had been taken, according to police.

Blackmon, 22, will serve six years in prison after pleading guilty to organizing a continuing financial crimes enterprise, defrauding a financial institution, money laundering, wire fraud, computer fraud and conspiring to defraud a financial institution. He also was ordered to reimburse Chase bank for $42,942, which nearly scuttled the plea deal Monday.

Foulk told Jones that Blackmon was first linked to the scheme from a search led by Joliet police officer Jeffrey German while investigating an unrelated gang crime. When German moved from the tactical unit to investigations, he had a laptop computer forensically examined and learned Blackmon had been electronically linking the accounts using bogus deposits, Foulk said.

Two arrested in park after gunshots heard JOLIET – Police said two teens were shooting a gun in a park Saturday.

Cmdr. Al Roechner said an off-duty officer heard several shots fired about 11:52 p.m. from the wooded area at Paul Briese Park at Ingalls Avenue and Cedarwood Drive. Roechner said police surrounded the area and saw two men walk out of the park onto Live Oak Lane. Donovan C. Ivery, 19, and Isaiah R. Smith, 18, were standing near a garbage can when they encountered an officer, Roechner said.

“Ivery had his hands out of sight behind the can. When he was told to raise them up, he only showed one hand. When the officer told him to show the second there was a loud clunk from something hitting the garbage can,” Roechner said.

Police said they found a .357-Magnum on the ground.

Roechner said a bullet fell out of Ivery’s pocket when he was patted down and other live rounds were found in the glove he was wearing on one hand.

“Ivery and Smith made statements admitting they’d both been firing the gun in the park,” Roechner said.

Women robbed in hotel BOLINGBROOK – Two women told police they were robbed by two men in their hotel room Sunday night.

Lt. Mike Rompa said the victims called police at 9:17 p.m. to the Ramada Inn on South Bolingbrook Drive where they had rented a room. Rompa said the women invited an acquaintance, Cambren K. Powell, 21, to visit, but Powell arrived with another man who took out a pistol and demanded money.

Rompa said the handgun may have been a BB gun. The men left after allegedly taking a cellphone and the victims called police.

The victims, a 30-year-old Bolingbrook woman and a 17-year-old Bolingbrook woman, were not injured.

Powell was later found in the 300 block of Woodcreek Drive and identified by the victims, Rompa said. The other suspect remained at-large Monday. Powell, of the 10S600 block of Lilac Lane, was arrested and booked into the county jail on charge of robbery.

JOLIET – A Lockport man reportedly threatened his ex-girlfriend last week with a loaded gun outside her workplace.

At 4:43 p.m. Friday, the 17-yearold woman arrived at the West Jefferson Street restaurant where she works to encounter Kendall D. Williamson, 21, according to Cmdr. Al Roechner.

“He pointed a gun at her and said ‘I have something for your new boyfriend,’ ” Roechner said.

Williamson then allegedly drove away in a blue Chevrolet Impala and the victim called police, who stopped the car a few blocks away.

“Officers saw open alcohol inside the vehicle, and while searching it they found a loaded 9-millimeter handgun under the driver’s seat,” Roechner said.

Roechner said the victim had an outstanding order of protection against Williamson that included her workplace.

Williamson, of the 300 block of West Caton Farm Road, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of ammunition and violating an order of protection.

He is being held in the Will County jail on $150,000 bond.

According to jail records, Williamson was arrested by sheriff’s police earlier this year on a vandalism charge. He was ordered

New business picking up

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Several businesses are moving into prime locations throughout Plainfield, and Village Planner Michael Garrigan said it’s a product of the housing market picking up.

“As the economy gets a little stronger, there will be much more interest in commercial areas,” Garrigan said.

Ross Dress for Less clothing store recently applied to take over the old Barnes & Noble storefront, Garrigan said. The CiCi’s Pizza on Route 59 and 119th Street will reopen under new management, and the old Bin 48 restaurant location in Downtown Plainfield may soon be home to a craft beer eatery.

“It’s going to be hard to attract commercial if you’re not building homes,” Garrigan said. “But we are. People see us

as a growth market.”

In addition to the three new businesses, village staff has been working with a potential new end user in the vacant lot north of the Route 59 Menards that used to house Staples.

Garrigan said it was premature to release information about the business, but it would not be a restaurant or store.

“It’s not a retail use, but it will be attractive to the community,” Garrigan said.

Across the street from CiCi’s, the Heritage Meadows development is booming with new users.

In March, the commercial space on the southwest corner of Route 59 and 119th Street saw Ewa’s Market and Deli come into the strip.

Now, real estate group Caton Commercial has filled up almost half of the 33,331 square feet of available space.

“It’s much better than what

it was with the old owners, when the space was sitting vacant for a long time,” said Christina Caton Kitchel, the director of leasing.

Buffed Nail Salon opened before Memorial Day in Heritage Meadows while Baird & Warner will use a 2,200-squarefoot space on the south end cap of the property.

Caton Kitchel also said a new user has signed a letter of intent to move in to the north end cap of the space.

The former Lombardo’s and Lazy Lizard building at 24136 Lockport St. will likely see a new tenant soon, RE/MAX agent Mark Batinick said.

“There has been a lot of activity here,” Batinick said.

“We’re really close to doing something here. We could have a lease signed within this week.”

Batinick said the new business will be a restaurant.

Plainfield park district plan comes out Wednesday

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Interim Executive Director Richard Grodsky is set to present Wednesday his plan for a reorganized Plainfield Township Park District during a board meeting.

Grodsky was hired as the interim director Richard to give the park Grodsky district a new, positive direction following several events that led to a state police investigation, state legislation aimed to fix the district’s problems and the resignation of previous executive director Garrett Peck.

“I’ll take the board through a reorganization plan that will have a new organizational chart and comment on functionality of the park district,” Grodsky said. “It’s what we be-

lieve is a better way to address movement, areas of the staff and figure out who is reporting to who.”

Grodsky said the reorganization will involve defining the duties of each department.

Reorganization also will occur on the board level as commissioners will vote on reappointing or appointing a new treasurer, secretary and law firm.

Director of communications Doug Booth currently is the treasurer, executive assistant Wendi Calabrese is the board secretary and Kavanagh, Grumley & Gorbold LLC is the district’s law firm.

During the May 14 meeting, the board voted to appoint Mary Kay Ludemann as president and reappoint Janet Silosky as vice president. Ludemann replaced Peter Hurtado, who didn’t attend the meeting.

Grodsky said that it’s customary for the positions to be appointed after the board votes on the president and vice presi-

dent positions.

District staff has recommended reappointing Kavanagh, Grumley & Gorbold as the law firm, according to board documents.

Grodsky declined to comment on who might be the new treasurer or secretary. But one board document up for approval Wednesday lists Maureen Nugent, the district’s finance director, as treasurer.

Commissioners also will hear a presentation on the 201415 budget.

The budget still is in draft form and key funds and expenses have not yet been budgeted.

But a staff memo lists three key areas that should be addressed in the future by the district: the development of a fund balance policy, changing the district’s fiscal year to Jan. 1 and the elimination of the working cash fund.

Mayall’s management firm Brunskill Management said the comedian died at his London home on Monday.

In the 1980s Mayall was part of the Comic Strip, a hugely influential group of alternative young comics that included Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders and Mayall’s writing and performing partner, Adrian Edmondson.

He was best known for co-writing and performing in “The Young Ones,” a sitcom about slovenly students that was much loved by those it satirized.

On television he memorably played Conservative politician Alan B’stard in the sitcom “The New Statesman” and lecherous Lord Flashheart in comedy classic “Blackadder.”

He and Edmondson also created and starred in “Bottom,” a surreally violent slapstick series about two unemployed slobs.

Film appearances in-

cluded the title role in 1991 fantasy “Drop Dead Fred” – which gained him a U.S. cult following – and 1999 British comedy “Guest House Paradiso.”

“There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing,” Edmondson said.

“They were some of the most carefree, stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him.

And now he’s died for real.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

London’s Metropolitan Police force said officers had been called to the house by the ambulance service on Monday, but that the death was not believed to be suspicious.

In 1998 Mayall was on life support and in a coma for several days after an all-terrain vehicle accident.

“The main difference between now and before my accident is I’m just very glad to be alive,” Mayall said last year.

“Other people get moody in their 40s and 50s – men get the male menopause.

I missed the whole thing. I was just really happy.”

About 900 Illinois veterans requested, didn’t get care

CHICAGO – A new audit shows nearly 900 veterans have requested appointments at Illinois’ Veterans Administration hospitals in the past decade but not received them.

The Veterans Affairs Department released findings Monday of a national audit on quality of care and wait times. It follows allegations that 40 patients died awaiting care at a Phoenix hospital where employees kept a secret waiting list to cover up delays.

The audit shows 494 new patients requested an appointment at the VA hospital in Marion, but no appointment was scheduled.

It also shows the average wait time for a primary care appointment was 33 days for patients at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital outside Chicago and 54 days in Danville.

Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk said the VA hasn’t been forthcoming enough about problems.

Gov. Quinn signs partial Chicago pension overhaul

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Monday to help Chicago reduce a multibillion-dollar pension shortfall but urged Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the City Council not to raise property taxes for additional revenues.

Early versions of the measure contained a property tax hike, which Emanuel said was necessary to avoid severe cuts to services. But it was later removed and several Chicago aldermen have opposed the idea.

“I urge them to rule out a property tax increase on Chicago homeowners and businesses,” Quinn said in a statement noting

Waukegan man charged with killing wife, daughter

WAUKEGAN – Prosecutors in suburban Chicago have charged a man with first-degree murder in the strangulation deaths of his wife and teenage daughter.

Lake County prosecutors say police responded Sunday night after 53-year-old Anthony Marcus called to report he’d killed his wife and daughter in their Waukegan home and that he was going to kill himself.

Police found the bodies of his 50-year-old wife, Sun, his 17-year-old daughter and a dog in the home. They say the woman and the teenager, who used a wheelchair, were strangled.

Marcus was treated for appar-

ent self-inflicted wounds. In court Monday, a judge ordered him held in lieu of $5 million bond. He was represented by the county’s public defender’s office, which did not return a call for comment.

2 small tornadoes confirmed in southern Illinois

RED BUD – The National Weather Service says it has confirmed that small tornadoes were responsible for minor damage in portions of southwestern Illinois’ Monroe County.

Meteorologist Mark Britt says both of the Saturday afternoon twisters southeast of St. Louis have been classified as EF-Os and caused no injuries.

Britt says neither tornado had maximum estimated wind speeds exceeding 80 miles an hour.

CHICAGO – Illinois’ top Democrats are pushing for a vote on an overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws that has stalled in the U.S. House.

The Illinois Business Immigration Coalition hosted a Monday event in Chicago where speakers included Gov. Pat Quinn, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and several congressmen.

They’ve called for a vote on federal legislation that would tighten border security and outline a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the U.S illegally.

NATION BRIEFS Obama to extend student loan payment relief WASHINGTON – Aiming to alleviate the burden of student loan debt, President Barack Obama expanded a program Monday that lets borrowers pay no more than 10 percent of their income every month and threw his support behind more sweeping Senate legislation targeting the issue.

Flanked by student loan borrowers at the White House, Obama said the rising costs of college have left America’s middle class feeling trapped. He put his pen to a presidential memorandum that he said could help an additional 5 million borrowers lower their monthly payments.

An existing repayment plan Obama announced in 2010 lets borrowers pay no more than 10 percent of their monthly income in payments, but is only available for those who started borrowing after October 2007. Obama’s memo expands that program by making opening it to those who borrowed anytime in the past.

Trucker in Tracy Morgan crash hadn’t slept NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The truck driver from Georgia accused of triggering the highway crash that injured Tracy Morgan and killed another comedian hadn’t slept for more than 24 hours before the accident, authorities said Monday as the actor recovered in a New Jersey hospital.

Wal-Mart truck driver Kevin Roper was originally expected to make an initial appearance in

state court Monday, but a court official said the Jonesboro, Georgia, resident is scheduled in court on Wednesday. It wasn’t clear Monday if Roper had retained an attorney. He remained free after posting $50,000 bond.

Authorities said the 35-yearold Roper apparently failed to slow for traffic ahead early Saturday in Cranbury Township and swerved at the last minute to avoid a crash. Instead, his big rig smashed into the back of Morgan’s chauffeured Mercedes limo bus, killing comedian James “Jimmy Mack” McNair, authorities said.

The 45-year-old Morgan, a former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” cast member, remained in critical condition Monday.

By BRADLEY BROOKS The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – It’s a tale of the two World Cups – one on a field and one playing out on this country’s streets.

As Brazilians raise the curtain this week on what’s arguably the world’s most popular sporting event, the country’s fervent love of soccer is butting up against public anger over charges of wasteful spending, corruption, traffic jams, strikes and a litany of other complaints.

After enduring a year of anti-government protests that tied up roads and strikes that paralyzed public transport, schools and other services, many exhausted Brazilians finally are preparing to cheer on their beloved team, though in what may be the flattest pre-Cup climate they’ve yet seen.

On a dark, rain-soaked street in Rio’s Copacabana neighborhood, Francisco Nascimento climbed a rickety wooden ladder to hang plastic streamers in the colors of Brazil’s national flag. With

only a few days to go before the Cup’s opening match, Nascimento was running out of time to repeat the ritual he’s completed for every World Cup since 1982.

“Brazil’s struggles, our frustration with politicians, have dampened excitement, and that anger won’t go away. But I don’t know anybody who isn’t praying for our team to show its grit, to show our swagger, and win this Cup,” Nascimento said.

Anticipation is building over the tournaments’ expected drama: Will boy wonder Neymar help Brazil avenge its haunting 1950 Cup loss in Maracana? Will Lionel Messi finally lead Argentina to glory on its archrival’s home turf? Or will an underdog team emerge to captivate the world’s imagination?

WASHINGTON – More than 57,000 U.S. military veterans have been waiting 90 days or more for their first VA medical appointments, and an additional 64,000 appear to have fallen through the cracks, never getting appointments after enrolling and requesting them, the Veterans Affairs Department said Monday.

It’s not just a backlog problem, the review indicated.

Thirteen percent of schedulers in the facility-by-facility report on 731 hospitals and outpatient clinics reported being told by supervisors to falsify appointment schedules to make patient waits appear shorter.

The audit is the first nationwide look at the VA network in the uproar that began with reports two months ago of patients dying while awaiting appointments and of cover-ups at the Phoenix VA center. A preliminary review last month found that long patient waits

and falsified records were “systemic” throughout the VA medical network, the nation’s largest single health care provider serving nearly 9 million veterans.

“This behavior runs counter to our core values,” the report said. “The overarching environment and culture which allowed this state of practice to take root must be confronted head-on.”

Acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson said Monday that VA officials have contacted 50,000 veterans across the country to get them off waiting lists and into clinics and are in the process of contacting 40,000 more.

The controversy forced VA Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign May 30. Shinseki took the blame for what he decried as a “lack of integrity” through the network. Legislation is being written in both the House and Senate to allow more veterans, including those enrolled in Medicare or the military’s TRICARE program, to get treatment from outside providers

Pakistani Taliban vows more violence after attack

By REBECCA SANTANA and ADIL JAWAD The Associated Press KARACHI, Pakistan – The Pakistani Taliban threatened more violence Monday after a five-hour assault on the nation’s busiest airport killed 29 people – including all 10 attackers – raising a new challenge for a U.S. ally trying to end years of fighting that has claimed thousands of lives.

With recently started peace efforts stalled, the cautious government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif may be dragged closer to a decision on whether to take on the militants in earnest across a country with a long history of ambiguity when it comes to dealing with militancy.

A further weakening of stability in the nuclear power whose tribal regions are already a hotbed of foment could ripple to neighboring Afghanistan as international combat forces prepare to withdraw from that country.

“Everywhere is a threat,” warned Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

“Every area is a target, every building is a potential target.”

Such an attack in Karachi, Pakistan’s business center, will likely discourage foreign investment at a time when its economy is struggling.

The Taliban said the assault on the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, was revenge for the November killing of the militant group’s leader in a U.S. drone strike.

In a telephone call to The Associated Press, the group’s spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, warned that “such attacks will continue until there is a permanent cease-fire.”

The attack began late Sunday when 10 gunmen, some disguised as policemen, stormed into a section of the sprawling airport where a terminal for VIP flights and cargo is located. They opened fire with machine guns and rocket launchers, sparking a battle with security forces that lasted until around dawn.

Heavy gunfire and multiple explosions were heard coming from the terminal amid the fighting. A major fire rose from the airport, illuminating the night in an orange glow as the silhouettes of jets could be seen.

At least some of the gunmen wore the uniform of the Airport Security Force, said an official near the terminal.

All the attackers wore vests of explosives, some of which were detonated when they were shot at by the police, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The attack started about the same time that airport security personnel and the staff from the Pakistani International Airlines engineering wing were changing shifts, said two of the PIA employees.

The employees asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

A cargo building was left completely gutted by the fire and the explosions, said Rizwan Akhtar, the chief of Pakistan’s elite paramilitary Rangers.

Just before dawn, security forces regained control of the airport, and all 10 attackers were dead, Akhtar said. Some of the attackers appeared to be

Uzbeks, he added, but officials were still investigating.

The attackers intended to destroy aircraft or possibly take people at the airport hostage, Khan said, adding that 19 people were killed. Most of the dead were airport security personnel who took the brunt of the assault.

During the battle, airport operations were suspended and all incoming flights were diverted. It reopened Monday afternoon.

Shahid, the spokesman for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan – as the Pakistani Taliban are known – said the attack was to avenge the death of Hakimullah Mehsud, the Taliban chief who was killed in an American drone strike in November 2013.

Mehsud’s death was the last major killing of a militant commander under the controversial drone program.

The AP reported in May that the program has largely wound down over Pakistan, and there hasn’t been a drone strike in the country since December.

The claim further diminished prospects for a resumption of peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban that officials had hoped could bring an end to the group’s years-long campaign seeking to overthrow the government.

Sharif’s government has advocated a policy of trying to negotiate with militants to end the insurgency, but the talks have floundered recently. The Taliban called off a cease-fire they had declared during the negotiations. Since then, Pakistani troops have hit hideouts with airstrikes in the troubled northwestern region, killing dozens of suspected militants.

But Samina Ahmed, senior adviser for South Asia from the International Crisis Group, said part of the problem is that Pakistan doesn’t have a clear policy on dealing with the militancy.

“There is already a military operation,” she said, referring to the airstrikes. “But that operation is reactive and tactical. It’s not strategic, and it’s not sustained.”

Several News of the World employees have pleaded guilty to hacking in conjunction with private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who was briefly jailed in 2007 for eavesdropping on the voicemails of royal aides. Defense lawyers say there is no evidence to prove Brooks, Coulson and Kuttner – busy editors of a large paper in a fiercely competitive market – were aware of illegal actions by staff.

Prosecutors say they must have known; the News of the World paid almost 100,000 pounds a year ($168,000) to Mulcaire.

And they say Brooks and Coulson must have shared information with each other because they were having an affair. An intimate letter written by Brooks after the couple broke up provided the trial with one of its many riveting moments.

Lead prosecutor Andrew Edis told the jury that Brooks, Coulson and Kuttner all knew about phone hacking, and “none of them lifted a finger to stop it.”

BRIBERY: Brooks, Coulson and ex-News of the World editor Clive Goodman are accused of paying public officials for information.

Prosecutors allege Coulson and Goodman bought royal phone directories and that the phone numbers were targeted for hacking.

Goodman was jailed along with Mulcaire in 2007 for hacking the phones of royal staff. But he did not disclose until this trial – after being promised that he would not face further phone hacking charges – that he also eavesdropped on Prince William and Kate Middleton, the latter more than 150 times.

Brooks is charged with conspiring to pay officials for information while she was editor of The Sun. Another charge, that Brooks paid an of-

ficial for photos of Prince William in a bikini, was dropped due to lack of evidence.

COVER-UP: Brooks, her husband Charles, her personal assistant Cheryl Carter and News International security chief Mark Hanna are accused of conspiring to pervert the course of justice by hiding evidence from investigators.

Prosecutors say that as the police net closed around the News of the World in 2011, Carter took boxes of notebooks from the company archive at Brooks’ request.

They also allege that Rebekah Brooks, Charles Brooks and Hanna took electronic devices and other material from the Brooks’ home and hid the belongings in a parking garage, where they were later found by a cleaner. The stash included a laptop computer, documents and several lesbian porn DVDs. Charles Brooks said he hid the material because he was embarrassed, not disposing of evidence.

LONDON – The last lawyer has argued. The final witness has been heard.

After seven months of courtroom drama and celebrity cameos, Britain’s phone hacking trial will soon be in the hands of jurors. They are expected to retire this week to decide whether the dramatic fall of powerful editors political insiders Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks will end in criminal conviction, and possibly prison.

The prosecution and the defense agree that employees of the scoop-hungry News of the World hacked the phones of scores of people, including Milly Dowler, a 13-year-old who was kidnapped in 2002 and later found murdered.

Revelation of that action, in 2011, triggered a wave of public outrage that brought down the 168-year-old tabloid and spurred criminal investigations in which dozens of jour-

nalists and officials have been arrested.

Judge John Saunders told jurors that the News of the World had invaded victims’ privacy – their job is to decide who knew about it.

Brooks, Coulson and five other defendants deny the charges, which include:

Illinois State Court ruling a victory for public access No one should have been surprised by a recent ruling of the Illinois Supreme Court that found the offices of state’s attorneys to be part of the executive branch of state government.

We cannot imagine it shocked even the judges of the appellate court that had decided, through some creative legal gymnastics, that state’s attorneys were a part of the judicial branch and, thus, not subject to transparency under the Freedom of Information Act. Every school child who studies American government learns that the U.S. attorney general heads the Justice Department and, in his role in the executive branch of government, is a trusted member of the cabinet of the president, the nation’s chief executive. Likewise, federal prosecutors in the Justice Department are also appointed by the president.

So it was unlikely a lower court in the Illinois judiciary was going to reorganize American democracy.

The appellate court had acted on a 2010 case involving the Kendall County state’s attorney, who had disingenuously argued he was not subject to Illinois’ FOIA even though he had, some time earlier, appointed a staff member to handle requests for public records.

One Illinois state’s attorney – Whiteside County’s Trish Joyce – decried the Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling because it “substantially impairs our ability to effectively prosecute cases.” She called on the Legislature to rewrite the public records law to exempt state’s attorneys.

We believe her fears are unfounded and that the law provides adequate protection to avoid jeopardizing pending criminal investigations.

Frankly, we have been disappointed at the eagerness with which some state’s attorneys latched onto the appellate decision to shut down access to their records – even for criminal cases that had been closed. The threat their stonewalling posed to open government was compounded by the dual role that state’s attorneys serve in Illinois – as both chief prosecutor and primary legal counsel to county government.

If legislators want to tackle a real problem, we suggest they look into the conflicts inherent in state’s attorneys being responsible for counseling county officials on public access laws while also having the responsibility to prosecute violators of those laws. That unfortunate conflict has seen state’s attorneys – more than once – give their public clients bad advice on the Open Meetings Act. Sad, but true.

We hope they are equally enthusiastic about more transparency now that the Supreme Court has found that “there is no sense ... in which state’s attorneys can be regarded as part of the judiciary or the judicial branch.”

May the public be pleasantly surprised.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Rauner already shaking up Springfield There were lots of losers during the state legislative session which ended last month. But there were a few winners, so let’s take a look at them.

First up, Republican gubernatorial nominee Bruce Rauner.

Never before has a political party nominated a gubernatorial candidate who’s had more impact on a legislative session than Rauner did this year. The gazillionaire’s unlimited supply of money and his constant threats to “Shake up Springfield” clearly put legislators of both parties on edge all spring – going back to even before he won the primary.

The Democrats surely know in their guts that much of what Rauner said about Springfield isn’t false. The long-entrenched powers-that-be stifle innova-

VIEWS Rich Miller tion and prevent actual compromise. Why wasn’t a scaled back income tax hike ever once debated? Because the top dogs didn’t want to talk about it.

End of story.

House Speaker Michael Madigan introduced numerous pieces of legislation designed with Rauner in mind, including a tax surcharge on millionaires, which ended up as a nonbinding question on the November ballot.

Rauner railed repeatedly against extending the income tax hike, and Democrats had to back off. Instead, they opted to punt the ball until after the election. If Rauner had

lost the primary to a weaker Republican, odds are that the tax hike extension would’ve had a better chance of passage.

Of course, if Rauner goes on to defeat Gov. Pat Quinn, the massive fiscal hole the General Assembly has created will be his problem – which ultimately makes him a loser as well.

Rauner became almost a shadow governor this spring. His hand was seen everywhere. Cook County pension reform failed, many say, because Rauner pushed against it. The $1.1 billion end of session road construction/ repair bill was reportedly only agreed to by Republicans after Rauner OK’d it, hoping to please the GOP-leaning road builders.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Senate President John Cullerton was another winner.

The Senate President’s electoral prowess meant once again that he could do pretty much anything he wanted. His 40 Democratic votes out of 59 total Senate seats gave him enough cushion to sit back and watch while Speaker Madigan struggled all year to deal with his own, smaller super-majority.

Cullerton stood his ground on the budget when the income tax hike extension fell apart and made sure his members’ top interests were taken care of, particularly with a small Medicaid expansion. He pushed back when Madigan tried to muscle through a major change in the way the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum was administrated.

He stood firm when pushed by Madigan to insert a requirement into the reauthorization of the court-stricken state eavesdropping law to require police to wear body cameras. He muscled through an innovative bill with his former chief of staff Sen. Andy Manar to fundamentally alter the way education is funded in Illinois.

And out of all the Democrats under the dome, he appeared to be the least rattled by Rauner’s primary win. Cullerton may

not have always made the best decisions (particularly when it came to ultimately killing the eavesdropping bill), but he appears to be coming into his own as a far more confident leader.

Legislative Republicans did pretty well, too. The weekend after the session ended, Kendall County Young Republican Chairman Brian Russell was busily scurrying to get himself onto the November ballot. He needed to collect 1,000 valid petition signatures in just three days to be appointed as the challenger to Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora. Russell said he hadn’t heard it, but word was that Team Rauner had pledged six figures to back Russell’s candidacy.

But if Rauner wins this November, Republican legislators will have to do something completely different – vote for some pretty distasteful things to support their GOP governor or risk his considerable ire. For over a decade, the Republicans often sat back and hit their red buttons when it came time to pass important bills. But they’ll finally have to help govern if Rauner is in the mansion. That spectacle right there would almost be worth seeing Rauner win.

CHAMPAIGN – If you didn’t believe it before, you better now.

As long as senior Dylan Rosa has an at-bat remaining, you can’t count out Providence.

Rosa, who has delivered a barrage of huge hits in the postseason, cracked a threerun double into the left-center field gap with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday to give the Celtics a wild, 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Edwardsville in the Class 4A Champaign Supersectional at the University of Illinois.

The game that began so badly for Providence could not have finished better, or more emotionally. The Celtics (26-14) will meet Prairie Ridge (24-16) at 3 p.m. Friday in the state semifinals at Silver Cross Field.

“By far, that’s the biggest hit of my career,” said Rosa, who previously in the postseason cracked a go-ahead tworun double in a 4-2 win over Lockport, a solo homer in the ninth inning to beat Brother Rice, 5-4, and a two-run single that put the Celtics ahead 5-3 en route to a 9-3 win over Lincoln-Way North.

“Rosa is our guy,” said winning pitcher Jake Godfrey, who went a full seven innings in relief after throwing a complete game last Thursday in a 5-3 win over Sandburg. “He’s clutch whether it’s pitching or hitting.”

In fact, Rosa will get the ball Friday, with Godfrey set to go in Saturday’s championship game, should the Celtics get there.

The first three batters for Edwardsville (32-8) hit the ball hard off Providence starter Brent Villasenor, and then the Celtics’ defense sprung a leak, committing two errors. Before the nightmarish start was over, Providence was down, 3-0. It would have been worse had Godfrey not started a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

The Celtics got a run back when Godfrey singled home Mike Madej, who also had singled, in the second. But when left fielder Cam Galgano’s misplay in left field allowed a run to score and make it 4-1 in the fifth, the hole was getting deeper. That was one of five Celtics errors.

However, Galgano atoned and then some. After the first two hitters were retired in the bottom of the sixth, Phil Kunsa singled and Madej walked.

Galgano blasted a fastball on a 3-2 pitch to deep right field for a two-run double to make it 4-3.

“I think that was the first fastball I got all game,” Galgano said. “I knew I had to make up for that bad error.”

Edwardsville added an insurance run in the seventh, with the help of an error. Ben Salvador made a diving catch in center field on a sacrifice fly or it could have been worse.

The bottom of the seventh opened with two pinch-hitters coming through for the Celtics as Justin Hunniford walked and Niko Kutsulis singled.

Up came Salvador, the leadoff man. In one of the key strategic moves of the day, Smith had Salvador bunt even after there were two strikes in the count. He came through, dropping down a sacrifice to move the runners into scoring position.

“He’s our bunter,” Smith said of Salvador. “I trusted him to do it.”

Zach Pych then walked to load the bases, and the only question was how many times Rosa could deliver in one postseason.

“I was warming up in the bullpen to start that inning,” said Rosa, who worked sixplus innings Saturday against Lincoln-Way North but would be needed in the event the Celtics tied it in the seventh.

“When the first two guys got on for us, I said, ‘I’m going to get a chance to bat now.’ The whole time I had it in my head that I was going to get a hit.

“I said a prayer to myself and said to get up there and don’t try to do too much. I was

trying to hit it through the middle.”

“In my mind, I just kept saying, ‘Give Dylan a chance,’ ” Smith said of the surreal seventh inning. “When I saw the ball skip off the turf and our guys running around the bases ...”

Smith can be excused for not being able to finish his thought.

“I don’t know what to say,” he grinned.

One inning after tying the score at 2, the Edwardsville Tigers got runners to second and third with nobody out with the heart of its order coming up to the plate.

But East’s Nikole Van Gennep not only worked herself out of a jam by striking out the last two hitters, she got out of a similar jam in the eighth while allowing only one run.

That proved to be just enough for the Griffins, who pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, which helped them claim a 4-3 victory over the Tigers.

As a result, East (27-10) earned its first state appearance since 2007 and is assured of its initial state trophy since capturing the state championship in its inaugural season of 2002.

Edwardsville (36-4), which had won 18 straight, seemed to be on the verge of moving on to Friday’s 3 p.m. semifinal with Sandburg at EastSide Centre in East Peoria, but Van Gennep and her teammates had other ideas.

“The whole game we just had to stay up and when the bases were loaded we had to focus that much more and we did it,” Van Gennep said. “I know that I have a great team behind me and that they would do whatever they could to help me out. This is really exciting.

The last team to win state was in 2002, and I just hope now that we can go all the way and get it for our school.”

It’s been a memorable 2014 for the Griffins, beginning with a cheerleading title in the winter and girls track and field and boys volleyball championships during recent weeks.

But East’s quest for a softball title seemed to be in jeopardy after the Tigers evened things up in the sixth, and then got their first two runners into scoring position in the seventh.

Olivia Nicholls led off with a double, and then Anna Walshleger reached on a bunt single and eventually stole second with no runners out.

Van Gennep kept things going when she coaxed Ari Arnold to hit into a fielder’s choice with Nicholls being thrown out at the plate by first baseman Ashley Hesse.

After Rachel Anderson drew a walk to load the bases, the right-hander struck out Kallen Loveless and Torrie Kruse.

The Griffins looked like they had taken control in the top of the eighth when Eleni Kioussis (2 for 3) singled and Jenny Van Geertry was hit by a pitch. After Van Gennep reached on a fielder’s choice, Blake Ruiz (2 for 4) smacked an RBI single to left.

After Ruiz collected her third RBI of the game, Nicole O’Donnell (3 for 4) hit a blooper to left to make it a 4-2 contest. Loveless retired the last two batters in a nine-hit effort.

But the intrigue was far from over as Hayli Green led off the Tigers eighth with a double to center and then Jordan Corby drove her in with a double to right. But Van Gennep retired the last three hitters to finish with a 10-hitter, which featured seven strikeouts.

“This is very exciting,” Ruiz said. “It was an anxious bus ride down here because we hadn’t seen this team so we

didn’t know what we were getting in to. And then during the game we just pulled through and stayed positive and ended up with a victory. It was scary when the bases were loaded but then Nikole struck them out and that was awesome. I’m so happy because it’s been so long since East has made it this far.”

East scored twice in the top of the first when Ruiz doubled in Olivia Prieto and Kioussis, and then the Tigers got a run back in the bottom of that frame when Anderson doubled home Walshleger. Edwardsville only managed one hit during the next four innings.

But the Griffins only collected three hits over the next six innings. The Tigers tied things up in the sixth when Kruse singled in Anderson to set the stage for the drama that took place over the next two innings.

CRESTWOOD – When Lemont scored three runs in the first inning for ace lefty Jake Latz, the Indians were well on their way toward achieving another first in the 2014 season.

Lemont put up four more runs in the fourth after scoring once in the third and went on to an 11-1, six-inning victory Monday night over De La Salle in the Class 3A Crestwood Supersectional at Standard Bank Stadium.

The first supersectional title for Lemont (33-5) puts the Indians in the state semifinals Friday at Silver Cross Field against Metamora, a 10-0 winner over Sycamore.

“Having Jake on the mound, you just have to get a couple, let him do his thing,’’ Mike Wisz said. “We were happy we could support him and let him relax on the mound and do what he did.’’

“His velocity was up there,’’ catcher Mike Papierski said of his batterymate. “At times he didn’t have the best curveballs, but his changeup was on and his fastball. So we had two pitches working.’’

Offensively, Papierski and Wisz were two of the main contributors. Papierski (2 for 3) tripled into the right-field corner to drive in the first run and doubled home a run in the four-run fourth.

Wisz, the Indians’ 6-foot-3, 215-pound designated hitter, doubled home two runs in the fifth and scored three runs.

Leadoff hitter Danny Dowiarz was 2 for 3 and scored twice. Nick Wisz had two RBIs singles, including one in the first inning.

“That was our goal, to come out quick and come out strong, put up a couple runs early,’’ Lemont coach Brian Storako said. “It takes the pressure off Jake, takes the pressure off our players.’’

Latz had nine strikeouts in 51/3 innings and allowed three hits and one unearned run.

the fastball early and get that going,’’ Latz said. “Once I started mixing the pitches, it was good. It kept them off balance.’’

Lemont chased De La Salle starting pitcher Alex Padilla after three innings.

“We’re just glad we could get to him and hit some balls hard and get some runs,’’ Mike Wisz said. “It was a good thing we got it early. That always takes the pressure off.’’

Papierski keeps the focus on Latz when he’s on the mound.

“I just try to get the best out of him, every inning, every pitch,’’ Papierski said. “We need everything out of him every pitch. When he doesn’t finish his pitches, I make sure I tell him.’’

Latz knows where he wants the Indians to finish the season.

“I’m going to keep working hard from here and hopefully we can win state this year,’’ he said. “That’s what’s on my mind right now.’’

“It’s an awesome ride,’’ Mike Wisz said. “We’re loving every second of it. Don’t want to stop now, just want to keep going.’’

Storako isn’t worried about his team enjoying the ride too much too soon.

“We’ve been working on staying grounded and keeping that mental process going,’’ Storako said. “This is going to be that tough week because it’s not a day off and then play.

“You’ve got a week of thinking about it and reading about it and everything like that. We embrace it. This is something they may never experience again. Enjoy it, but understand you’re there for one reason only.’’

Danta’s season debut a big hit, wins late-model feature Friday night SUBMITTED REPORTS MORRIS – Anthony Danta won the late-model feature in his season debut to highlight the stock car racing program Friday night at Grundy County Speedway.

Also the fast qualifier, Danta passed leader Brandon Clubb late in the 30-lap race.

Larry Schuler wound up second, with Clubb settling for third. Ricky Baker was fourth and Mark Sontag Jr. fifth.

Eddie Hoffman, Scott Koerner, James Gregait, David Einhaus and Tony Scapelli Jr. rounded out the top 10.

Billy Knippenberg won the

first heat ahead of Baker. Koerner claimed the second heat with Jim Weber second.

Tom Knippenberg was in control in the Mid-American division as he set the fast time, won the first heat and then tacked on the feature win.

John Ventrello was second, followed by Matt Clemens, Joe Vinachi and Luke

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Long after Jay Cutler and Jordan Palmer had departed with the rest of their teammates, David Fales lingered behind on the practice field, continuing to put his playbook into practice.

For now, the Bears rookie quarterback is nothing more than a depth chart also-ran, a developmental work in progress at a position that runs five deep. David Fales To some, the fact the former San Jose State standout is even here is a bit of a surprise after Bears general manager Phil Emery suggested he wasn’t interested in the Bears putting work into drafting a reserve signal-caller.

Before the Bears signed Jimmy Clausen last week, Fales found himself competing against Jerrod Johnson to be the No. 3 quarterback and for a spot on the Bears’ 53-man roster.

Now with Clausen – another quarterback with NFL experience – in the mix to make a team with seemingly no solidified back-up in place, Fales will be forced to work even harder.

That takes us back to the practice field last week, where Fales and Johnson took turns throwing timing patterns to backup receivers to better prepare the quarterbacking pair for the open competition that lies ahead.

“I’m just trying to grasp the offense and keep getting better,” Fales said last week,

On Saturday, coach Marc Trestman told reporters at the Bears annual charity gala event that Clausen’s signing was just a matter of adding another experienced option.

Trestman said he told Palmer he was planning on bringing in another quarterback, adding that Clausen’s signing was “not connected” to whether he believes Palmer, who is entering his second year with the Bears, is the right man to back up Cutler.

“We’re going to keep the competition open on a daily basis,” Trestman said Saturday.

How that affects Fales – who was drafted in the sixth round – remains unknown.

For now, Fales is busy digesting the playbook, focusing on learning the full installation of the offense after getting a small taste of what that process looks like during rookie mini-camp.

With training camp still six weeks off, Fales is less concerned with those around him vying for the same roster spot. Instead, he is focused on himself to make sure he’s in a position to remain a viable player in the competition.

Much of that is happening now as Fales continues to adjust to the speed at the NFL level.

“It’s a lot, but if you know the base reads and just stick to it, you’ll be OK,” Fales said.

“It’s just that repetition of hearing someone say the play quick, spitting it out, seeing the whole picture and then getting it out.

“A lot of the concepts are the exact same stuff (from college) – the reads are the same, but with coach Trestman, (quarterbacks coach Matt) Cavanaugh and (offensive coordinator Aaron) Kromer, there’s no gray area. With everything, you know exactly why you’re going where you’re going.”

When that’s not exactly clear, Fales has leaned on Cutler and Palmer to keep him pointed in the right direction.

Fales met Palmer at an Elite 11 camp last summer in California and then worked with him again before the Senior Bowl. But it has been Cutler who has been more instrumental in helping Fales grasp the Bears’ offense, giving him plenty to mull over.

A lot of times, Fales – who along with Fresno State’s Derek Carr were the only two college quarterbacks to throw for more than 4,000 yards in both 2012 and 2013 – gets answers from Cutler to questions he hasn’t yet considered.

The two talk over scenarios and quarterback reads, helping to ensure Fales is seeing what he needs to when things start to happen at full speed.

Cutler has proved to be a valuable ally in Fales’ development.

“Sometimes I don’t even know the questions to ask because I’ve got such limited experience,” Fales said. “So he throws a lot at me and it definitely helps.”

Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center offers new procedure for blocked arteries

Thanks to a relatively new procedure for coronary total occlusion, Brockman, 65 and of Wilmington, will be able to do just that. Pain free.

CTO is a complete blockage of the coronary arteries, said Dr. Chris Kolyvas of Heartland Cardiovascular Center in Joliet. When partial blockage occurs, an angioplasty – where an interventional cardiologist inserts a balloon catheter to widen the opening and place a stent – is often recommended, he said. This keeps blood flowing to the heart muscle.

However, if the blockage is complete and present for some time, it can become quite hard, making it impossible to insert a catheter and place a stent, Kolyvas said. Tools are available for blockages in the legs, kidneys and the carotid artery, but because the heart and its arteries are more delicate, this type of tool had not been available for coronary angioplasty.

Until recently.

That’s because, according to a news release from Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, two new tools from Boston Scientific – the CrossBoss and Stingray – tunnel through plaque and then direct the balloon and stent.

Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet is only one of six Illinois hospitals to offer this new procedure using these tools, the release noted.

Heart disease is responsible for one in every four deaths in the United States.

Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease, according to a Boston Scientific statistic sheet.

Brockman was one of them. She wasn’t surprised to hear she had a heart condition, she said. An EKG several years ago was normal, but she knew things weren’t right when she felt short of breath while shopping, doing housework or playing with her oldest grandson.

“I felt pain when I walked; a tightness in the right side of my neck and some minor pain in my chest and my shoulder,” Brockman said. “I knew it was time to visit the doctor.”

Her family physician recommended a stress test, and after seeing Kolyvas, she was immediately sent to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center. An

angioplasty was scheduled for the following day.

“That was good, though,” Brockman said. “I didn’t have time to think about it.”

After being diagnosed with cancer in 2000, Brockman had her right kidney removed.

A year later, doctors found a spot on the remaining kidney and a portion of it was removed. Brockman is thankful she has been cancer-free, but with less-than-normal kidney function, her doctors didn’t want to stress her remaining kidney with open heart surgery.

So, using this new technique specifically for highrisk patients, which the FDA approved for use in the United States in 2011, according to Boston Scientific, Kolyvas performed the angioplasty. Kolyvas estimated that approximately 30 of these pro-

cedures have been performed at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center since September 2013.

Kolyvas stressed that this surgery “is not for everyone” and is only one of several available options. However, Brockman, because of her high risk factor, was a good candidate.

A graduate of Loyola Medical and an interventional cardiologist with Heartland for approximately 20 years, Kolyvas is one of three surgeons at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center who has been trained in the new technology, Kolyvas said.

The other two surgeons are Dr. Govind Ramadurai with Heartland Cardiovascular Center and Dr. George Aziz with Heart Care Centers of Illinois (Joliet office), said Jan Ciccarelli, director of market-

ing and community relations at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Brockman said her surgery took about an hour.

According to Kolyvas, it can take up to three.

Brockman said the hardest part was lying still for 12 hours after the surgery. The next day, Brockman was back home with her husband Richard. With the exception of some temporary bans on lifting, she immediately resumed normal activities.

Furthermore, Brockman has no more discomfort when walking, is able to go shopping and most importantly, pick up her grandsons. She feels good about the procedure. Would she recommend it to other potential candidates?

“Oh, yes,” Brockman said, “in a heartbeat.”

Success in three no-trump is getting up nine tricks and falling four times. How should South plan to do that in this deal after West leads the spade king?

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and one club. The extra winner might come from hearts or clubs. In isolation, in hearts, one would cash dummy’s king, then take a finesse; or, in clubs, take two finesses. The snag is that all of those finesses are into the West hand, the defender who presumably has long and strong spades (to be leading declarer’s known four-card suit).

Is there anything better?

Of course! South should duck the first two rounds of spades to find out if the suit is 4-3 or worse.

If it is worse, he had better run his diamonds to try to bring pressure to bear on West, then probably hope that the heart finesse works.

Here, though, spades are 4-3.

Now it cannot hurt declarer to take the third spade and return his fourth spade, pitching a heart and a club from the board.

If West shifts to a heart or club, it concedes the contract. So let’s assume he safely leads a diamond. South takes the trick on the board and runs the club 10.

That loses and West produces another diamond. Now declarer should play off his two top hearts. Here, the queen drops and the contract is home. But if she does not appear, after cashing his last two diamond tricks, South should plan on taking a second club finesse.

But when you drive a car, you control more than a ton of steel moving at high speed. Of course the world around you has to be concerned if you can’t control it.

One study found that the driving skills of people with even mild Alzheimer’s were significantly poorer than those of other elderly people, including those with some other forms of dementia.

Some people believe that driving privileges should not be taken away until a person clearly becomes an unsafe driver. But it makes no sense to me to say that a person has to prove he or she is an unsafe driver by getting into an accident that was clearly caused by failing faculties – especially when that accident damages more than property.

Your father’s general behavior in non-driving situations can give you some clues as to whether safety is likely to be an issue. For example, if your father exhibits poor judgment, inattentiveness to what’s going on around him, clumsiness, and slow or inappropriate

reactions, then those are clear signs that he should not drive.

If you feel that it is time for your father to stop driving, some experts would suggest that you try simply taking away his keys. If his dementia is substantial, after a period of confusion about where the keys are, he may simply forget about them.

Try to preserve his self-esteem. Some people agree to stop driving for reasons other than concern about their competency.

For example, you might tell your father that his car needs repair, or that the license or registration has expired.

Getting objective feedback from an impartial person can help. Some people with AD will accept a written prescription from a doctor that says, “Do not drive.”

If that doesn’t convince him, then his doctor may be able to have his driver’s license suspended with a written statement. If nothing else works, you may have to sell the car.

Two beers a day is a big deal Dr. Wallace: I’m 18 and dating a real sweet guy who is also 18. We have been dating each other for over six months, and I really like him. I’ve dated a lot of guys before, some nice ones and a few jerks, but this guy is different. He is kind and honest and always in a good mood. I really think I could consider him a “keeper.”

I am a graduating senior in high school, have good grades and have been accepted at the University of Connecticut.

But I’m not sure if I want to go to college now that I’m really getting serious about Tony.

Tony was not serious about college because he has worked in his father’s auto repair business after school all through high school.

He has decided not to further his education because he will end up with a good job in his dad’s business and he really likes working there and makes good money.

It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Every guy at one time or another has been told, “Thanks, but no thanks” – but they have also heard, “Thanks for asking; I’d love to go out with you.”

The key is, you’ve got to ask. I’m positive there are some girls in Pekin who would be thrilled to have your company for an evening. Some of them are sitting at home this very evening waiting for someone like you to ask them out.

Beach reads for the curious mind

By DOMINIC BASULTO Special To The Washington Post For this summer’s reading list, we bring you seven books published this year, each exploring the future of innovation from a different perspective. Some of the authors are YouTube stars with devoted online followings; others are academics or researchers who are just now crossing over into the mainstream. What they all have in common, though, is the ability to explain advances from sometimes arcane scientific fields – neuroscience, genetics or synthetic biology – in a way that generates a broader public discussion about the future we want as a society.

1. “The People’s Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age” by Astra Taylor (288 pages; $27): This book seems to be part of a broader zeitgeist (pioneered by the likes of Evgeny Morozov and Jaron Lanier) in which people question the type of future that we’ve been building with digital technology. There’s a sense, increasingly expressed online, that something is just not quite right – we give too much power to huge Internet giants such as Google and Facebook and all the former utopian potential of the Web remains unrealized.

We were promised a “revolution” and ended up with something more like a “rearrangement” of power and influence.

Astra Taylor argues that the Internet is actually contributing to the types of inequality that we observe throughout society and changing how we think about art and culture. If you’re wondering why the Internet is full of stories about cats instead of deep investigative journalism, this may be the book for you.

2. “The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance and Empower the Mind”

by Michio Kaku (400 pages; $28.95): While reading about neuroscience may not sound like the ideal way to lounge at the pool during the dog days of summer, Kaku is one of those rare science writers who appears to be just as comfortable on the set of “The Daily Show” as he is in a traditional academic setting. His earlier books – “Physics of the Future” and “Physics of the Impossible” – made him into a YouTube favorite (who doesn’t want to know how to make a light saber?), and now he’s back with an overview of what might be possible in the future for the human brain: uploading memories, telekinesis, and playing our thoughts and dreams the same way we might a motion picture.

What Kaku argues, essentially, is that our sense of the future of the mind is fast evolving, thanks to advances made possible by such scientific endeavors as Pres-

ident Barack Obama’s brain initiative.

It may still be some time off, but one day, Kaku says, we will be able to reverse-engineer the human brain.

Once that happens, we might be able to create human super-intelligence, treat mental illness or understand the meaning of consciousness.

3. “Super Cells: Building with Biology” by Nina Tandon and Mitchell Joachim (103 pages; $1.99 – Kindle): If you’re a fan of TED talks, it’s time to check out one of the latest entries in the TED Books series. Nina Tandon and Mitchell Joachim take us on a whirlwind tour of the latest developments in bioengineering and synthetic biology. Yes, the book appears to be a bit high on the techno-utopianism quotient, but at under 100 pages, it is a quick way to get updated on the latest advances in an emerging field the authors refer to as “bio-design.”

The book maps out the amazing future of the cell, as it is used for everything from creating personalized human tissue replacements to growing new types of food.

4. “The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History”

by Elizabeth Kolbert (336 pages; $28): At first glance, Kolbert’s book – with a woolly mammoth on the cover – would appear to be a book more about the past than the future. The book’s title refers to the five great extinctions in the world’s history.

The sixth extinction is humanity’s own, brought about by radical changes to the planet’s ecosystem. Kolbert asks a poignant question: How is it possible that a technologically advanced society is slowly but methodically destroying itself?

This book will probably not go down well with the climate-change deniers, but it’s easy to see how this book is part of the new zeitgeist, especially now that the Obama administration has accepted the dire climate warnings from the United Nations as a reality. Kolbert brilliantly explains why such factors as biodiversity matter and why humanity needs to change its future by first realizing what it is doing to the planet. She draws on the latest thinking in fields ranging from geology to marine biology to explain how and why extinction happens.

5. “Inheritance: How Our Genes Change Our Lives – and Our Lives Change Our Genes” by Sharon Moalem (272 pages; $28): Moalem, a neurogeneticist by training, has figured out how to cross the dividing line between popular science and entertainment. His books – with provocative titles like “How Sex Works” – are obviously intended to cross over as we can change our children’s “genetic inheritance.”

The human genome is fluid, and that would appear to open the future to a world of low-cost genetic screening and even genetic enhancements for our offspring.

6. “The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies” by Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee (320 pages; $26.95): This book has made headlines in economic and technology circles, leading to a debate about the way robots and machines are taking over from humans. It outlines the ways that the growth of exponential, recombinant and digital technologies is leading to a brighter future for humanity.

What Brynjolfsson and McAfee argue is that the next age of machines has important implications for how we think about everything, from the future of work to the future of artificial intelligence.

7. “Creativity, Inc.” by Ed Catmull (368 pages; $28): The co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios explains the secrets of creativity. This is not so much a book about the future as about how to unlock the creativity and innovation within all of us.

Not surprisingly, the book – with a Pixar cartoon character on the cover – has been a hit with the casual reader as well as business managers eager to create a culture of creativity at work. What’s not to love? In a summer of blockbuster movies, find out from one of the Pixar geniuses how to go about making your own creative blockbusters.
