Channahon High School The first school in Channahon Township was taught by the Rev. Perry using the residence of Russell Tyron as a classroom.

In 1837-1838, six years before the village of Channahon’s first layout by Myrvin Benjamin, the first wooden schoolhouse was built on the property of Dr. Ira Knapp.

Just before the Civil War, Channahon Township school system had expanded to include eight schoolhouses, two of which were located in the village of Channahon.

In 1869, an elegant and substantial two-story whiteframed building was erected on the southeast corner of Tyron Street and W. Eames Street (Route 6). The school offered a primary and secondary school education, and the high school department was managed by Professor Layburn, who was assisted by Miss Brown and Miss Blount.

Within a decade, Channahon Township schools were ranked one of the best conducted schools in the country.

By 1872, the township sustained nine school districts with slightly more than 400 students and 13 teachers who were employed across the five schoolhouses and one grade school with a high school curriculum.

As the use of the eastern portion of the I&M Canal began to wane in the early 20th century, so did the population of the township.

In turn, the school system saw a rapid decline in students. In 1920, Channahon Township only had five school districts with seven

He and his students are looking for contracted teachers who taught 126 students. At the two-story schoolhouse, the secondary education program had been reduced to two grades, with graduates completing their studies at the Joliet Township High School.

It was replaced a year later by a modest brick structure on the same corner, that included a central assembly hall and two pairs of rooms.

All high school classes were discontinued in the building in 1947, when they were consolidated into Minooka Community High School.

During the 1950s, addition-

al classrooms and a decent auditorium and gymnasium were added to the structure to meet the needs of the growing township in the post-war era.

Today, Pioneer Path School, shown in the Now photograph, operates from part of the old building and serves the educational needs of students in third and forth grade.

Resident takes lead after seeing video of Oak Brook walk

By CHRISTINE JOHNSON Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – Jen Williams has been a New Lenox resident for the past nine years and wanted to do something positive for the community she loves.

After hearing about a Blue Ribbon Walk that took place in Oak Brook in January, she decided it would be a perfect way to honor her brother-in-law, a police officer who died in the line of duty 16 years ago, and her three nephews who are all active police officers.

Williams contacted village officials who formed a committee and together they made Saturday’s first New Lenox Blue Ribbon Walk a success.

“I wanted to do something in response to all of the police bashing, something positive involving the community,” Williams said.

Blue ribbons were tied to trees around the Village Commons in New Lenox where a small crowd, most holding blue balloons, gathered in front of the New Lenox Police Department to show support for police officers and the daily sacrifices they make.

Officer Aurena Davis, who helped organize the event, handed out New Lenox Police Department key chains to the delight of the children in attendance. The key chains, shaped like police cars, flash blue and red lights when turned on.

Mayor Tim Baldermann addressed the crowd and thanked Williams, the committee, Deputy Chief April DiSandro, Davis, officer Mike Jurka and all the sponsors who made the event possible.

“This was really good,” Baldermann said. “It is important that the community remembers that the overwhelming majority of police officers are doing a great job,” he added.

Society Bagpipers played, the crowd released bright blue balloons into the gray sky and the mile long walk led by Grand Marshal Paul Kaupas, former Will County Sheriff, accompanied by Mayor Baldermann and New Lenox Police Chief Bob Sterba began.

“Things are different now than when I first started my career 41 years ago. There was respect for law enforcement back then,” Kaupas said.

Kaupas feels the majority of police officers do a great job and acknowledged that officers do make mistakes from time to time.

“I welcome this change in a day and age where police officers are seen as the bad guys,” he added.

As a show of support, res-

idents were asked to tie blue ribbons around their trees as New Lenox officers and their families along with friends, members of the New Lenox Fire Department and village officials walked around the

Village Commons three times to honor all officers and the daily sacrifices they make.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the community for the show of support,” Sterba said.

“This was a very thoughtful

thing to do and everyone did a wonderful job.”

After the walk was completed, attendees were treated to refreshments which included popcorn and snow cones.

The Blue Ribbon Walk was started by Teri King of Berwyn and after a posting a video of the walk in on Facebook she was contacted by people throughout the country to find out how they could hold a similar walk to show their support. Although there are at least 15 states with communities participating, all Blue Ribbon Walks in Illinois will be held on the same day. King has contacted Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office in an effort to have the last Saturday in May proclaimed First Responder Day.

2 sites suggested for library expansion

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Expansion plans for the Plainfield Public Library include two potential sites identified by an architectural firm.

Representatives from Nagle Hartray Architecture recently presented preliminary plans for an expansion in the event a library referendum passes next year. That included options for a library expansion or a new structure at the current library location between Lockport and Illinois streets and Route 59.

Several layouts for a new library at the village-owned Greenfield property also were identified.

Library Director Julie Milavec said that while the board favored the existing site, the only decision the board has made so far is to not pursue a second library. Instead, it is considering an expansion, move or rebuild of the current library.

“Right now we’re just talking about general size footprint,” Milavec said of the plans, which included drawings of future library locations. “Right now, it’s just a rectangle on a piece of paper.

It will need to be refined.”

Current site

Plans for the existing site include the parking lot and two residential properties north of the library. The own-

ers of those properties have already signed letters of intent to sell the land to the library for possible expansion.

One site plan includes an L-shaped expansion of the current library to nearly quadruple its size to 100,000 square feet. Other site plans include building a new 90,000-squarefoot library on the north or east side of the property, with potential for underground parking.

The Greenfield site, which is located between Van Dyke Road, Wood Farm Road and the railroad tracks, was supposed to be a train station for a proposed rail line that was to

Joliet considering repairs to vaulted Rialto sidewalk

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A walk around the Rialto Square Theatre in downtown Joliet may get a little easier if the city moves forward with sidewalk repairs.

Rialto officials last month said they wanted the city to fix the crumbling sidewalk along Scott Street behind the theater.

“The city has indicated that they will be doing repair work on that,” Rialto Executive Director Randy Green said at last week’s meeting of the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, which oversees the Rialto.

“I don’t know what’s down there. I want to make sure there are no utilities and we can just fill it in with stone.”

The crumbling is attributed to the sidewalk being a vaulted sidewalk, meaning there is an open area underneath that was used in past years for utilities and other infrastructure needs.

When the Rialto tore down the Ivanhoe Building in 2004,

go from Joliet to O’Hare International Airport.

But that plan fell through, and the village-owned site remains vacant. Nagle Hartray’s plans include relocating the library to a new building on a part of the 58-acre property at the northeast corner of Wood Farm Road and the water treatment facility access road.

That would be a site with no restrictions on size or space, but library trustees were concerned about the questionable future of the residential zoned property, which is surrounded by industrial uses.

Community input

There also were concerns with the visibility and com-

mercial benefits of the Greenfield site compared to the current library site.

But the Library Board chose to continue consideration of both options to remain as transparent as possible as the library progresses through the referendum planning process.

The architecture firm’s presentation will be available on the library’s website.

The library has scheduled a public information presentation for the Citizens Task Force at 7 p.m. June 11 at the Plainfield Township Community Center, and another public meeting at 10 a.m. June 13 in the library’s small meeting room.

A family honors, celebrates

the vault is believed to have filled up with debris that is causing uneven settling and crumbling.

The answer, Trizna said, is to open up the sidewalk, fill the vault with stone for a solid base, and then lay a new sidewalk. But that may not be possible if there are still working utility lines in the vault.

“I don’t know what’s down there,” he said. “I want to make sure there are no utilities and we can just fill it in with stone.”

If the work can be done, Trizna said, the sidewalk repairs will be done in an L-shaped area along the sections of Scott and Van Buren streets that runs in front of the Ivanhoe Building.

Retiring with honors Larry Thompson worked to motivate Lockport students

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Larry Thompson has retired from his long career as an educator for Lockport Township High School 205 – but not before being recognized for his accomplishments.

A committee of LTHS administrators, teachers and students nominated Thompson, 55, to become the recipient of the 2015 William and Mildred Jackson Teacher Award.

Thompson regards the recognition as a blessing.

Becky Gilberto, a colleague who nominated Thompson and who also has retired, said the award was well-deserved.

“He’s just so, so giving and you just don’t find a whole lot of people like that,” she said. “And who doesn’t want to Larry be recognized?

Thompson He’s an unsung hero. That’s the bottom line. He’s not very boastful. He’s very humble.”

The award, which comes with a certificate and a $5,000 check, is given annually to a LTHS teacher who demonstrates special skills in the art and science of teaching, school officials said. The recipient must serve as a role model and display compassion for students and peers.

Thompson, a high school dean and head varsity boys basketball coach, said he’s always worked to improve students’ experiences, even those students who were not high achievers.

In the early 1980s, he said he worked with LTHS students who were considered difficult.

Their grades or their attendance were not the best, but he sought ways to motivate them

“My goal was to become a teacher ... a teacher is what I wanted to be ever since I was 9 or 10 years old ...”

“That was my goal in my time,” Thompson said.

Becky Gilberto said Thompson was the kind of teacher who would pay for a students’ basketball shoes if they needed it. He would act as a protective dad for certain students needing help so they could get an education and make the right choices, she said.

Thompson said he was inspired to become a teacher when he met his fifth-grade history teacher, Louis Wright.

He was a great role model who made an impression because he was African-American, Thompson said.

He didn’t see too many African-American teachers at the time.

“My goal was to become a teacher … a teacher is what I wanted to be ever since I was 9 or 10 years old and my mother was influential and saying you could do whatever you wanted to do,” he said.

Thompson said he’s been blessed to work in different positions at LTHS throughout his more than 30-year career.

“Some people don’t know why they’ve been placed in certain places to do certain things,” Thompson said. “You got to embrace it and God’s the one in control … I just realized 10 or 15 years in, this is the place he wanted me to be in – to help as many kids as possible.”

Forest Preserve District’s ‘Woods Walk’ Challenge kicks off Monday

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – If you’re eager for the start of the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s 15th annual Woods Walk Challenge, you’re not alone.

“People have been calling us the last few months asking about [the event],” District Spokeswoman Cindy Cain said. “The people who do this really, really enjoy it.”

The Woods Walks Challenge – which begins Monday and runs through Oct. 31 – gives participants a chance to test out new trails or revisit old favorites. If they successfully hike seven of the 10 designated trails, they will earn a medal suitable for attaching to a backpack, hat or walking stick.

Those who walk all 10 trails will win an additional prize, Cain said.

Each year, the trails change so people aren’t walking the same ones every year.

Maps of the trail segments included in this year’s challenge are available on the district’s website at ReconnectWithNature.org.

“Woods Walk is a great way to get people to appreciate nature and to exercise at their own pace,” Cain said.

“Some Woods Walk participants can hike a longer trail in a blink of an eye, while others may find even the shorter distances a bit of a challenge.”

For example, a Cub Scout troop in New Lenox attempted to hike at least seven of the 10 trails in a single day last year, but got rained out, Cain said.

Participants must download the official travel log from the district’s website, pick one up at one of the district’s four visitor centers, or call 815-727-8700 to request a form be mailed to them.

Hikers also can take part in this year’s photo contest by submitting their best snapshots along the trail.

Joliet, Plainfield children excited to attend unique camp

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Will County children have attended a unique summer camp in Ingleside for burn victims for more than two decades.

Two of them are more excited than ever to return to the camp that gives young burn victims a setting to be “normal kids.”

“I’ve been counting the days until it starts,” said Eric Mavec, a 13-year-old Joliet resident.

Camp “I Am Me” will celebrate its 25th year when it opens June 21. It runs a full week through June 27.

The camp is only for children and teenagers who have burn scars or other burn marks. It gives them a safe environment to build self-esteem and enjoy recreational activities, meet new friends and learn skills to deal with their needs as burn survivors.

“We would actually like to see no one come to this camp,” said Philip Zaleski, executive director of the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, which organizes the camp every year. “But it’s needed.”

Dealing with scars

Eric has gone to the camp for six years, since he was 8 years old.

“It’s like a home away from home,” he said. “There are lots of fun activities and you can kind of relate to everyone.”

Eric was burned when he was 3 years old. His mother, Sue Mavec, was cleaning the house and had a bucket of scalding hot water on the floor.

Eric came into the room to see the garbage truck outside through a window. His mother called out to be careful and “don’t slip.” But he backed up, fell in the bucket and suffered burns on his right arm and around his torso.

“It can be very traumatic,” said Sue Mavec, recounting her son’s vivid memory of the moment. “This really helps him feel like he’s not alone and helps him with the trauma.”

Mavec said the camp has given Eric more confidence and allowed him to be more comfortable with his burns.

Reese Lage, a 9-year-old Central Elementary student, went to the camp for the first time last year. She loved it so much she can’t wait for June 21.

“I made friends and went to swimming lessons in the morning,” said Reese, who also enjoyed horseback riding, archery and volleyball. “I felt more welcome there.”

Reese’s father said arriving at the camp was an indication of the attention the camp puts on the children.

“Just picking her up was an overwhelming experience,” he said. “It’s like they’re in their own little world. They don’t even allow communication with parents during the camp.”

“She is very respected by her parents and her co-workers. She always has a smile on her face and always takes charge to complete any task, function, reading night, orientations, parents meeting, etc., Dernulc said. “[She] is truly loved by her students. Her enthusiasm, love and care is evident every day in her classroom. On the last day of school she, as well as her students, cry because they do not want to leave her.”

Jacobson is leaving District 201 and Jones Elementary to spend more time with her family, Dernulc said.

“She’ll probably be mad at me for doing this [telling everyone], but I felt like I had to do something for her. She’s worked so hard,” Dernulc said. “I am going to miss her.”

A beloved teacher from Minooka Grade School District 201 is turning in her grade book, packing up her pencil bag and leaving her kindergartners, much to the disappointment of many District 201 parents and their children.

Lisa Jacobson has taught kindergarten for District 201 for 12 years. She started at Minooka Elementary School, moved to Aux Sable Elementary when it opened and then Jones Elementary when it opened six years ago.

Fellow kindergarten teacher Karen Dernulc has worked alongside Jacobson the whole time; they moved from school to school together. Dernulc said she just couldn’t let Jacobson go without sharing what a wonderful teacher and co-worker she’s been all these

years.

Jacobson’s student just adored her, Dernulc said.

When there’s a project to be done, Jacobson always puts in 110 percent. She doesn’t just make a bulletin board – it’s a 3D bulletin board.

“She’s up until 12:30 in the morning doing it and she just loves it,” Dernulc said.

Avery Selk, who was in Jacobson’s class this year, shared memories of her teacher.

Jacobson took her students outside to release a hatching of butterflies. When she opened the top, they each flew out, except for one.

“Mrs. Jacobson tickled the butterfly’s little feet, but it had trouble flying up,” Avery said. “So the whole class and Mrs. Jacobson flapped their arms to show the butterfly how to fly and he flew, and flew and flew.”

Joliet man works hard to make son’s dream of a Victorian museum come true

That resort stayed in the family until Pat’s father died in the early 2000s, Serena said.

Pat, a licensed pilot, once flew her and Seth to the resort before Pat had his accident.

Although Pat sold the airplane after he hurt his knees, Serena said he never lost his strong work ethic, especially when it came to the museum.

The building is named after Hiram Scutt, a Civil War veteran who later became Joliet’s first barbed wire manufacturer. The red brick, Second Empire-style mansion was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. It was built in 1882 by James Weese, one of Joliet’s first architects.

“He moved huge cabinets by himself,” Serena said. “He’d take carpet, put heavy furniture on it and drag it up whole flights of stairs.”

Andrea Magosky of Joliet, Pat’s wife, said she was 16 when she began dating Pat. She liked his sense of humor and his ability to have fun, whether they were ice skating, dancing, watching a movie or inviting her younger brothers

to join them for ice cream.

“He was always doing things for other people,” Andrea said.

A lover of history, especially local history, Andrea fully supported Pat’s efforts to convert the old Scutt mansion into the P. Seth Magosky Museum of Victorian Life and Joliet History.

To raise money for expenses, Pat drew on Andrea’s love and knowledge of local history and wrote two books: “The First 35 Years of Joliet” and “Historic Impressions of Shorewood.”

A third was left unfinished.

In 2012, Pat fell 20 feet from the museum’s cupola and broke his back in two places. After the accident, Pat’s health declined. Pat was 72 when he died May 6.

In the years before his death, Pat and Andrea had switched roles. Andrea became Pat’s caregiver, Serena said, a role Pat assumed for Andrea when her health was not good.

“My dad was always the strong one,” Serena said.

Corneal arcus typically starts at the 6 and 12 o’clock positions on the cornea, but can eventually form a full ring. These partial arcs or full rings are composed primarily of lipids and cholesterol, but are not necessarily related to high blood cholesterol levels or heart disease.

This graying of the outer portion of the cornea is quite common among older adults and neither affects vision nor requires treatment.

JOLIET – Since the sudden death of his son Seth Magosky in 2007, Pat Magosky of Joliet had one ambition: convert the former Hiram B. Scutt Mansion on Broadway Street in Joliet into a Victorian museum.

That project was Seth’s dream, said Serena Magosky, Pat’s daughter. But after Seth died from complications of Marfan syndrome, Seth’s dream became the purpose of Pat’s life.

Unfortunately, the museum didn’t have a budget for the mansion’s mortgage and repairs. So Pat – a master craftsman, Serena said – assumed the financial burden and did the repairs himself.

“He was very good with his hands and very good at figuring out what something would cost,” Serena said. “He’d say, ‘OK, I can do this right now’ and then wait a month to do another project.”

Because Pat crushed his knees at work when Serena was 8, Pat never had a pension, Serena said. His income came from Social Security and from the apartments he owned and rented, she added.

As a landlord, Pat often refined his skills by taking home improvement courses, Serena said. She recalled her father taking her to jobs to assist.

“I did drywall, roofing, plumbing and maintenance work with my father,” Serena said. “I’m very proud that he taught me to be a little tougher.

He didn’t want people to take advantage of me.”

Serena believes her father’s survival spirit began at his parents’ Canadian wilderness resort, where Pat spent much of his youth. In high school, Pat worked as a hunting and fishing guide. During his off hours, Pat did other work.

Merullo, the oldest former member of the Cubs and the last living person to play for them in the World Series, has died. He was 98.

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts said in a statement Saturday that Merullo died earlier in the day.

Merullo was a major league shortstop from 1941-47, all with the Cubs. He hit .240 with six home runs and 152 RBIs. Merullo played three games in the 1945 World Series and went 0 for 2. The Cubs lost in seven games to Detroit, and haven’t made it back to the Series since then.

Last June, Merullo traveled from his home in Massachusetts and returned to Wrigley Field as part of the ballpark’s 100th celebration.

Wearing a Cubs jersey, he used a walker to go from his wheelchair toward the mound and threw out the first ball before the Cubs played the Marlins, getting a big

cheer from the fans.

During the seventh-inning stretch, he took part in Wrigley Field tradition and sang “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” over the stadium’s sound system and drew another big ovation.

Merullo recalled that after the 1945 Series, the Cubs imagined they’d make it back soon enough.

“Yeah, sure,” he said. “We never gave up hope.”

Merullo later scouted for the Cubs. His grandson, Matt Merullo, played six years in the majors, mostly with the White Sox. “While I have experienced many joys as owner of this great franchise, one of the most memorable was meeting Lennie last season,” Ricketts said.

“When the Cubs last appeared in a World Series in 1945, Lennie was a 28-year-old shortstop. Nearly 70 years later, he brought the same youthful spirit and excitement,” he said. “To his family, friends and loved ones, our organization will never forget him.”

Oldest living Cubs player Lennie Merullo dies at 98

Margaret Castrale, age 90, of West Frankfort, Illinois, formerly of Elwood, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Westside Care Center in West Frankfort.

Born March 5, 1925 in Bradford, Indiana, Margaret was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Senetto) Masse. She was a longtime employee of Reavis High School in Burbank and Uarco Printing Firm in Chicago.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Mike Castrale; two sons, Michael (Joyce) Castrale and Larry (Phyllis) Castrale; four grandchildren, Amy, Amanda, Craig, and Jesica; four great grandchildren, Thomas, Cody, Aidan, and Eleni; and several nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Masse; and sister, Edith Vogrich.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Saint Rose Catholic Church, 604 S. Rift between Rauner, Dems to spill into summer with ad war

SPRINGFIELD – The increasingly nasty feud between Gov. Bruce Rauner and majority Democrats is about to spill from the Illinois statehouse to voters’ mailboxes and televisions, as the rookie Republican unleashes a multimillion-dollar ad campaign against lawmakers he claims are intransigent over the state budget and his political agenda.

The entrenched, more experienced Democratic leaders – who say they were warned by Rauner of the coming campaign – began pushing back Sunday. Senate President John Cullerton said GOP lawmakers are being “lured away by the siren song of Gov. Rauner’s campaign cash,” hindering compromise.

“We find ourselves trying to work with a governor who continues to run campaigns rather than the state that elected him,” the Chicago Democrat said. “Rather than roll up your sleeves and work on solutions, he’s dictating demands and threatening those who defy him.”

Majority Democrats in the General Assembly approved a $36.3 billion spending plan they say preserves Rauner-proposed cuts to essential programs. They acknowledge it’s $3 billion short on revenue and want Rauner to agree to a tax increase.

The Republican calls it “phony” and won’t talk taxes until Democrats consider big changes he wants, such as a property tax freeze and less-costly workers’ compensation insurance for employers, which he says are needed to make Illinois more competitive.

Chicago mayor: Beau Biden dedicated life to public service

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has issued a statement on the death of Beau Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden.

Beau Biden died Saturday of brain cancer, less than two years after he was diagnosed. The two-time attorney general for the state of Delaware was 46.

The Chicago mayor said he and his wife, Amy Rule, are “deeply saddened” by Beau Biden’s death.

The mayor described the Bidens as “longtime personal friends.”

Emanuel said Beau Biden was “an adoring son who followed in his father’s footsteps when it came to public service.” He said Biden “dedicated his life to a

College removes Hastert’s name after indictment

CHICAGO – A Christian college in suburban Chicago has removed the name of former U.S. House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert from an academic research center.

Wheaton College announced Sunday that what had been known as the J. Dennis Hastert Center for Economics, Government and Public Policy is now just named after the school.

The center was established in 2007 when Hastert stepped down from Congress after eight years as speaker.

Hastert resigned from the research center’s board Friday, one day after the release of a federal indictment accusing him of violating banking laws by agreeing

to pay $3.5 million in hush money to keep a person silent about unspecified “prior misconduct.”

2 central Illinois colleges readying for smoking ban

NORMAL – Two central Illinois schools are getting ready for a new state law that prohibits smoking on public college campuses starting July 1.

The Bloomington Pantagraph reported Heartland Community College in Normal has opted to ban tobacco starting Monday.

School officials said the date makes sense because it’s when summer classes start. “Tobacco-free campus” signs went up at the community college last week.

Meanwhile Illinois State University is waiting until the July 1 deadline but instituted stricter smoking rules in January 2013.

Both schools said they’ll rely heavily on voluntary compliance.

Young filmmaker’s DVD features Iroquois County Courthouse

WATSEKA – A young Illinois filmmaker is detailing the history of the nearly 150-year-old Old Iroquois County Courthouse in Watseka.

The courthouse is now a museum and office manager Judy Ficke told The Kankakee Daily-Journal she hopes the hourlong DVD will encourage others to help preserve local history.

The film is being made by 33-year-old Phil Gioja who owns Center Street Productions. He interviewed 20 people for the film from a 10-year-old volunteer to a 100-year-old founding member of the local historical society.

HYDERABAD, India – Despite hopes that weekend thundershowers would help end a raging heat wave in southern India, the rain brought only limited relief as the death toll since mid-April approached 2,200.

Officials said Sunday that the intense heat likely was to continue for another day in worst-hit Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states.

Daytime temperatures hovered between 113 and 116 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of the two states over the weekend, 5 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, said K.Y. Reddy, a director of the Meteorological Center in the Telangana state capital of Hyderabad. Thundershowers brought relief to people in other areas.

Andhra Pradesh has been hit the hardest, with 1,636 people dying in the state from the heat over the past month and a half, a government statement said.

Kerry delays return to U.S. after injury in bicycle crash

GENEVA – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has delayed his trip back to the United States to stay in a Swiss hospital overnight after breaking his leg in a bicycle crash Sunday.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said that after further consultation, it was decided it was sensible for Kerry to remain in the hospital for observation overnight. Kerry had to scrap the rest of a four-nation trip that included an international confer-

ence on combating the Islamic State group.

“The secretary had planned on flying back to the U.S. this evening, but after further consultation it was sensible for him to remain in the hospital for observation overnight for purely precautionary measures and fly home tomorrow,” Kirby said Sunday.

Kerry broke his leg after a bicycle crash when he struck a curb. Kerry was in stable condition as he prepared to return to Boston for further treatment with the doctor who previously operated on his hip, Kirby said.

He said X-rays at a Swiss hospital confirmed that Kerry fractured his right femur.

Sun returns to Texas

DALLAS – Most of Texas was set to get its first period of extended sunshine in weeks, allowing surging rivers to recede as emergency-management officials turn their attention to cleanup efforts in such places as Houston, where damage estimates top $45 million.

Parts of the state finally were beginning to recover Sunday from weeks of rain and flooding that have made Texas a place of extremes: severe drought conditions earlier in the year that have given way to unprecedented rainfall in some areas. At least 31 people have been killed in storms that began in Texas and Oklahoma over Memorial Day weekend.

Twenty-seven of the deaths have been in Texas.

Federal surveillance powers lapse with no deal in Senate

By ERICA WERNER and KEN DILANIAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The National Security Agency lost its authority at midnight to collect Americans’ phone records in bulk, after an extraordinary Sunday Senate session failed to produce an 11th-hour deal to extend the fiercely contested program.

Intelligence officials warned that the outcome amounts to a win for terrorists. But civil liberties groups applauded the demise, at least temporarily, of the once-secret post-Sept. 11 program made public by NSA contractor Edward Snowden, which critics say is an unconstitutional intrusion into Americans’ privacy.

The program is all but certain to be revived in a matter of days, although it also looks certain to be completely overhauled under House-passed legislation that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reluctantly blessed in an about-face Sunday evening.

With most senators opposed to extending current law unchanged, even for a short time, McConnell said the House bill was the only option left other than letting the program die off entirely. The Senate voted, 77-17, to move ahead on the House-passed bill.

But no final action was expected before Sunday’s midnight deadline after McConnell’s fellow Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul served notice he would assert his prerogatives under Senate rules to delay a final vote for several days.

“This is what we fought the revolution over, are we going to so blithely give up our freedom? ... I’m not going to take it anymore,” Paul declared on the Senate floor, as supporters wearing red “Stand With Rand” T-shirts packed the spectator gallery.

Paul’s moves infuriated fellow Republicans, and they exited the chamber en masse when he stood up to speak after the Senate’s vote on the House bill.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. complained to reporters that Paul places “a higher priority on his fundraising and his ambitions than on the security of the nation.”

In addition to the bulk phone collections provision, two lesser-known Patriot Act provisions also lapse at midnight: one, so far unused, helps track “lone wolf” terrorism suspects unconnected to a foreign power; the second allows the government to eavesdrop on suspects who continually discard their cellphones. The House bill, backed by the White House, extends those two provisions unchanged, while remaking the bulk collection program

over six months by giving phone companies the job of hanging onto records the government could search with a warrant.

CIA Director John Brennan was among those warning that letting the authorities lapse, even for a time, will make America less safe.

Terrorists “are looking for the seams to operate within,” Brennan said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” ‘’This is something that we can’t afford to do right now.” He bemoaned “too much political grandstanding and crusading for ideological causes that have skewed the debate on this issue” and said the terrorism-fighting tools are important to American lives.

For Paul, the issue represents a potent political opportunity, and his presidential campaign has been sending out numerous fundraising appeals focused on it. A super PAC supporting him even produced an overthe-top video casting the dispute as a professional wrestling-style “Brawl for Liberty” between Paul and Obama – even though Paul’s main opponent on the issue is McConnell.

Conservative Nebraska has populist streak

By GRANT SCHULTE The Associated Press LINCOLN, Nebraska – What’s up with Nebraska?

The state is among the nation’s most conservative, with Republicans controlling all of state government. But by the time the legislative session had ended last week, lawmakers had repealed the death penalty, legalized licenses for certain immigrants brought to the country illegally as children, raised the state fuel tax and come close to approving a medical marijuana bill.

The liberal-leaning list of accomplishments has left some shaking their heads, but others say it’s not unprecedented in a state with a strong populist streak and an unusual legislative system that gives power to individual lawmakers at the expense of political parties.

The Legislature – which has only one house – is comprised of 35 Republicans, 13 Democrats and one independent – but, unlike in other

states, the party in the majority doesn’t control the session.

The speaker sets the agenda and designates certain bills as priorities but doesn’t decide whether a bill makes it to the floor, and parties can’t exert discipline over how senators vote. The setup forces lawmakers to build coalitions based on shared beliefs, regional interests or agreements to support one another’s bills.

Further, senators said the Legislature’s size separates it from conservative powerhouses such as Texas. With 49 members, Nebraska’s Legislature is the nation’s smallest.

Senators form friendships that transcend party lines, in an atmosphere that one lawmaker likens to a coffee shop.

“There are a lot of places like that out in rural Nebraska,” said Sen. Laura Ebke, a Republican elected last year.

“The same crowd comes in every day, they complain about the same things, they argue about the same things and then they’re friends.”

Galen Hadley pointed to the death penalty vote: After a divisive and emotional debate on the floor, senators on both sides of the issue went out for a beer.

“We act at times more like judges than a Legislature,” said Hadley, a Republican.

“Every new bill is like a new case, and just as every judge can hear the evidence and make their own decision, every senator can hear a bill and decide whether they’re going to support it or not.”

Many lawmakers put a high priority on protecting the rare one-house structure, which was approved during the Great Depression when

voters sought a system that would be more efficient.

Ebke said the nonpartisan rules feed the notion that senators need to research issues themselves and vote their conscience.

The session frustrated many reliably conservative lawmakers, who failed to pass large tax cut packages, gun-friendly laws and new restrictions on abortions – the kind of measures that pass easily in other Republican-dominated legislatures.

“This Legislature is so unpredictable, you never know where some senators will be,” said Sen. Bill Kintner, an out-

spoken conservative Republican. “There’s not a cohesive philosophy of governing that I can see. There are people in here that I have no idea where they’re going to be [on an issue]. You’re always guessing.”

Especially vexed was the state’s new governor, Pete Ricketts, who came into office with a promise to work closely with lawmakers but then complained loudly as his fellow Republicans overrode his veto of the death penalty, fuel tax increase and immigrant license bills.

He said last week that lawmakers had fallen out of touch with most Nebraskans.

The flip side of years of no hurricanes: Good luck runs out

By SETH BORENSTEIN The Associated Press OCEAN CITY, Maryland – For millions of Americans living in the hurricane zones on the Gulf and East coasts, recent decades have been quiet – maybe too quiet.

Cities such as Tampa, Houston, Jacksonville and Daytona Beach historically get hit with major hurricanes every 20 to 40 years, according to meteorologists. But those same places have now gone at least 70 years – sometimes more than a century – without getting smacked by those monster storms, according to data analyses by an MIT hurricane professor and The Associated Press.

These are places where people may think they know what to expect from a major hurricane – with more than 110 mph winds, such as Katrina or Andrew – but they really don’t. They are cities where construction has boomed but haven’t been tested by nature at its strongest. In the Tampa region, an Andrew-sized storm could cause more than $200 billion in damage, according to a local government study in 2010.

Few of Tampa’s current residents witnessed the last major hurricane that hit there in October 1921. Movies were silent, booze was illegal and Warren Harding was president.

For northeast Florida and

southern Georgia, the last major hurricane was sometime in the 19th century.

“We’ve been kind of lucky,” said MIT meteorology professor Kerry Emanuel, who along with the AP crunched numbers on how often hurricanes have hit metro regions and compared them to when the last time they were hit. “It’s ripe for disaster. ... Everyone’s forgotten what it’s like.”

“It’s just the laws of statistics,” said Emanuel. “Luck will run out. It’s just a question of when.”

This hurricane season, beginning Monday, doesn’t look to be as busy as past ones. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fore-

casts a 70 percent chance of fewer than normal hurricanes, mostly because of an El Nino weather oscillation. But even a quiet season can have one devastating storm hit. That’s what happened when Andrew smashed parts of Miami in 1992; it was the second costliest hurricane on record, in a below average year for overall hurricane activity.

Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is preparing for the worst and worrying that other people aren’t.

Inexperienced people “generally underestimate how bad it will be and made decisions about staying when they should be evacuating,” Fugate

said. “You have to accept the fact that every time a major storm threatens it’s a new experience for 99 percent of the people involved.”

And then there are the people who went through smaller storms and think that wasn’t too bad and misjudge the bigger storm. In that type of situation, that thinking can “get you killed,” Fugate said. “People don’t always understand the threat.”

Hurricane evacuation researcher Jay Baker, a retired Florida State University professor, said his studies and surveys show that people will still evacuate properly even if they don’t have recent storm experience.

Watchdog: Ex-Nazis got $20.2M in Social Security benefits

By RICHARD LARDNER, DAVID RISING and RANDY HERSCHAFT The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Elfriede Rinkel’s past as a Nazi concentration camp guard didn’t keep her from collecting nearly $120,000 in American Social Security benefits.

Rinkel admitted to being stationed at the Ravensbrueck camp during World War II, where she worked with an attack dog trained by the SS, according to U.S. Justice Department records. She immigrated to California and married a German-born Jew whose parents had been killed in the Holocaust.

She agreed to leave the U.S. in 2006 and remains the only woman the Justice Department’s Nazi-hunting unit ever initiated deportation proceedings against. Yet after Rinkel departed, the U.S. Social Security Administration kept paying her widow benefits, which began after her husband died, because there was no legal basis for stopping them until late last year.

Rinkel is among 133 suspected Nazi war criminals, SS guards, and others that may have participated in the Third Reich’s atrocities who received $20.2 million in Social

Security benefits, according to a report to be released later this week by the inspector general of the Social Security Administration. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the report.

The payments are far greater than previously estimated and occurred between February 1962 and January 2015, when a new law called the No Social Security for Nazis Act kicked in and ended retirement payments for four beneficiaries. The report does not include the names of any Nazi suspects who received benefits. But the descriptions of several of the beneficiaries match legal records detailing Rinkel’s case and others.

The large amount of the benefits and their duration illustrate how unaware the American public was of the influx of Nazi persecutors into the U.S., with estimates ranging as high as 10,000. Many lied about their Nazi pasts to get into the U.S. and even became American citizens. They got jobs and said little about what they did during the war.

Americans were shocked in the 1970s to learn their former enemies were living next door. Yet the U.S. was slow to react. It wasn’t until 1979 that a special Nazi-hunting unit, the Office of Special Investiga-

tions, was created within the Justice Department.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., requested that the Social Security Administration’s inspector general look into the scope of the payments following an AP investigation, which was published in October 2014.

AP found that the Justice Department used a legal loophole to persuade Nazi suspects to leave the U.S. in exchange for Social Security benefits.

If they agreed to go voluntarily, or simply fled the country before being deported, they could keep their benefits. The Justice Department denied using Social Security payments as a way to expel former Nazis.

By March 1999, 28 suspected Nazi criminals had collected $1.5 million in Social Security payments after their removal from the U.S., Social Security Administration records uncovered by AP showed.

Since then, AP estimated the amount paid out had grown substantially. That estimate was based on the number of suspects who qualified and the three decades that have passed since the first former Nazis, Arthur Rudolph and John Avdzej, signed agreements that required them to leave the country but ensured their benefits would continue.

Bergdahl The restrictions had been due to expire Monday under a May 2014 exchange for Bergdahl. U.S. officials said Friday the Obama administration was closing in on an agreement with Qatar to extend the restrictions for six months that could be announced this weekend. It was not immediately clear why that agreement had not been finalized.

The official said the U.S. remains in “close contact” with Qatari authorities “to make sure these individuals do not pose a threat to the United States.” As a result of the talks to date, Qatar “has agreed to maintain the current restrictive conditions on these individuals as we continue these discussions,” the official said.

The official said the former detainees are all currently in Qatar and remain subject to the travel ban and extensive monitoring. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly speak to the matter.

Under the terms of the exchange, the five detainees were sent to Qatar, where government officials agreed to monitor their activities and prevent them from traveling out of the country for one year. In return, Bergdahl, who had been held captive by the Taliban for nearly five years after walking away from his Army post in Afghanistan, was released to the U.S. military. He recently was charged with deser-

At least one of the five allegedly contacted militants during the past year while in Qatar. No details have been disclosed about that contact, but the White House confirmed that one was put under enhanced surveillance.

One or more of the detainees met with some members of the al-Qaida-affiliated Haqqani militant group in Qatar earlier in the year, according to Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. That was an indication that the group was reaching out to communicate with the so-called Taliban Five, said Graham, who predicted all five will rejoin the fight.

Four of the five former detainees remain on the United Nations’ blacklist, which freezes their assets and has them under a separate travel ban. But the U.N. itself has acknowledged that its travel ban has been violated. In a report late last year, the U.N. sanctions committee stated, “Regrettably, the monitoring team continues to receive a steady – albeit officially unconfirmed – flow of media reports indicating that some listed individuals have become increasingly adept at circumventing the sanctions measures, the travel ban in particular.”

The State Department insists that U.S. officials work to mitigate the risk of former Guantanamo detainees returning to the fight, threatening Americans or jeopardizing U.S. national security.

U.S. officials have noted in the past that the five Taliban leaders are middle-aged or older, were former officials in the Taliban government and probably wouldn’t be seen again on any battlefield, although they could continue to be active members of the Taliban.

Members of Congress have repeatedly expressed concern about what will happen after the travel ban expires and criticized the administration for releasing the five in the first place.

They have asked the Obama administration to try to persuade Qatar to extend the monitoring.

Kelly edges Wallace for Joliet Amateur title

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – It figured that the sun came out only after the last putt dropped Sunday afternoon on the 50th Joliet Amateur at Wedgewood Golf Course.

For Tim “Tee-K” Kelly, the tournament really had been won Saturday afternoon, when he scored a 3-under-par 69 while playing through a Caddyshack-level monsoon. That didn’t give him the lead – he was two strokes in arrears of teenager Drew Shepherd, who had played in the morning – but it was six strokes better than anyone else in the afternoon wave.

Given the conditions, it served notice that Kelly would have to be dealt with in the final round.

Even with a double-bogey on his card, nobody could match him Sunday. Kelly added an even-par 72 in the northeast wind to total 3-under 141 and score a one-stroke victory over Trent Wallace, who had graduated from Joliet West on Friday night, and Ben Bradbury, whose 4-under 68 was the best round of the day.

Shepherd scored a 4-over 76 on Sunday and finished fourth at 1-under 143. Nobody else broke par or matched it.

That left Kelly high and dry, the opposite of Saturday.

“Probably the worst weather I’ve played 18 holes of golf in,” said Kelly, a Wheaton native who captured the 2013 Illinois Amateur and just finished his sophomore year at Ohio State. “And one of the better tournament rounds I’ve ever played. It was still tricky today, though. The wind was swirly, and some hole locations were tricky. You’ve just got to keep your ball in front of you.”

Kelly was 6-under through 12 but doubled the par-3 13th when his tee ball went left with the wind and out-of-bounds.

But from there, with Wallace momentarily tied and in the group behind, Kelly played the last six holes only in 1-over, with a lip-out bogey on the par4 16th.

“After yesterday, I know I can play in anything,” Kelly said. “I just kept giving myself

None of Kelly’s myriad 15-footers for birdie dropped, but only one of Wallace’s did.

At 5-under and one behind Kelly through 11, Wallace bogeyed 12 and 13, birdied 14 by dropping his approach a foot from the cup – again tying Kelly at 4-under – then bogeyed the 15th and 17th.

“On 15, I had 50 yards in (with the approach) and made bogey, and I three-putted 17,” Wallace said. “My putter and my wedges failed me. I’ll forget about it. Maybe not tomorrow, but I’ll forget about it.”

For Illinois State-bound Wallace, the outcome was less than he hoped for. Winner of the Providence Invitational at The Sanctuary last fall and a prep standout, Wallace graduated from Joliet West two days earlier. The showing at Wedgewood essentially was his graduation from junior golf.

Bradbury, who played at University of St. Francis after a high school career at Lincoln-Way East, traded working in the golf business for a place in the real world a few years back. This was his first appearance in the Joliet Amateur since then. A first-day 74 put him in the back half of the field, starting on No. 10.

He went around Wedgewood’s back nine in even par, then birdied five of the first six holes to barge into contention.

He, Kelly and Wallace briefly were tied at 3-under, but a bogey on the 16th pushed him back.

“I didn’t do anything different,” Bradbury said. “Putts just started falling for me. I didn’t think that was close for the lead at all.”

Trent Wallace Joliet Amateur second-place finisher naments so far this season, but he posted a nifty 5-under-par 67 in Saturday’s blustery opening round. For the Hinsdale Central standout, this was a learning experience.

“I struggled most of the way and figured out how to make scrappy pars,” Shepherd said.

CHARLESTON – One of the disappointing aspects of Saturday’s state boys track and field finals was the bad weather that sped up the meet, which deprived most athletes of being recognized for their accomplishments.

But for the individuals fortunate to earn all-state honors by winning medals for topnine finishes, whether they heard their names announced or not at O’Brien Stadium didn’t spoil their special day.

Plainfield North senior Alex Ruscitti got the chance to be on two medal-winning relays along with teammates Thomas Harris, DeVaughn Hrobowski and Zach Shelton.

The Tigers took fifth in the Class 3A 4x100-meter relay, then settled for a rare third place tie with rival Plainfield East in the 4x200 relay. The latter performance becomes the program’s best finish in an event at state.

“We have a really cool rivalry with East, and we knew it would be a battle, and it was a fun race to be in,” Ruscitti said.

“But all of the guys from Plainfield work hard, and we call ourselves ‘Tracktown,’ and we showed pretty well here with all of us placing. It was rough for us during the season, but today we performed. It was a great day – I couldn’t have asked for much more.”

Lockport junior Derrius Rodgers also picked up a pair of Class 3A medals after taking sixth in the 100 and ninth in the 200.

“It was a great feeling getting down here for the first time,” Rodgers said. “Just to get the experience was the main thing. I didn’t run the 200 like I wanted, but I got in the 100 on Friday. The No. 1 thing that I learned was to keep my focus the whole time and to have good mechanics.

Next year should be very exciting.”

Lincoln-Way West senior Jake Vanderwell was pleased to capture sixth in the Class 2A 800. He became the Warriors’ second medalist in an individual event.

“I put in a lot of good work,

“I’m a little disappointed, but I’m glad that I was able to made it to the finals,” McConico said. “I just tried to stay focused and run my race, and it was alright. Compared to last year, I made a lot of improvement. This was my first year here, so now I know what to expect next year. I plan on coming back next year, and I’ll be ready.”

Minooka junior Justin Wolz got hurt Friday and then wound up claiming eighth in the Class 3A 300 hurdles.

“I hurt my hip yesterday in the 100 hurdles, but I felt pretty good until landing after Hurdle 6; I didn’t feel powerful and wasn’t able to finish strongly,” Wolz said. “But that’s something that I’m going to work on this summer for next year.

I want to see if I can make the same type of progress as I did my sophomore to junior season. I want to get this experience again.”

Morris senior Jake Wantland took ninth in the Class 2A 800 to become his school’s first medalist since 2001 and its third medal winner on the track.

“It was very exciting,” Wantland said. “I want to say a big thank-you to coach (Derek) Babson, since I couldn’t have done any of this without him.

He’s helped me train since last year, and we’ve run almost every single day together. I’m very thankful to have gotten this opportunity to run in the finals. I would have liked to place a little higher, but I can’t be upset with a medal.”

Bolingbrook senior Peyton Chapman hoped to medal in the Class 3A 800 but fell just short and settled for 10th.

“I’m happy that I made it to Day 2. But, ultimately, the goal was to get top nine; and I was 10th, so I didn’t get that,” Chapman said. “But I PR’ed by three-quarters of a second and broke 1:55, so I’m a little satisfied with that. That was a crazy fast race.”

Slammers drop doubleheader to Miners SUBMITTED REPORTS M A R I O N – A f t e r S a turday’s rainout, the Joliet Slammers dropped a doubleheader Sunday to the Southern Illinois Miners, 4-2 and 7-4.

In Game 1, the Slammers (6-9) scored early, then struggled against Southern Illinois Miners ace Matt Bywater, the 2014 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year.

With two outs in the top of the second, Alfredo Rodriguez reached on an error, and Phil Bates singled. Bates attempted to steal second. Miners catcher Toby Demello’s throw airmailed second and landed in center field, allowing Rodriguez to score for a

1-0 lead.

Southern Illinois (11-4) came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but the Slammers drew even in the third. With two outs, Nate Roberts walked and Mike Garza singled. Russell Moldenhauer then hit a slow roller to first, and Moldenhauer beat Bywater to the bag. Roberts raced around third to score on the play, tying it at 2.

Ross hits winning single Odd shutout still a hit with Sox’s Danks in 11th as Cubs top Royals

By JORDAN GODWIN The Associated Press HOUSTON – John Danks pitched an unusual shutout against the Houston Astros on Sunday.

Danks allowed 10 hits, including five extra-base hits, in the White Sox’s 6-0 victory over the Astros.

According to STATS, Danks is the only pitcher to give up at least 10 hits and at least five extra-base hits in a shutout going back to 1914.

The most recent pitcher to give up at least 10 hits in a shutout was Carlos Silva on August 3, 2004, against the Angels.

“I caught some breaks,” Danks said. “I was really just trying to keep the ball in the ballpark and let these guys do work. It worked out.”

Sox manager Robin Ventura made a mound visit in the bottom of the ninth to check on Danks, but left him in to finish the shutout.

“This is a tough lineup that can come back on you with the homer real quick,” Ventura said. “He’s just a bulldog guy that keeps battling.”

With 15 to 20 friends and family in the crowd, Danks (3-4) entered Sunday with an 0-2 record and a 9.28 ERA in

two starts at Houston.

He was 0-3 with a 9.15 ERA in four career starts against the Astros, but put it all behind him Sunday.

“I hadn’t had a whole lot of luck when I had family in town,” said Danks a native Texan. “Maybe I broke that curse, too.”

It was Danks’ third career shutout and first since August 2011 against Seattle. Danks threw 118 pitches, 82 for strikes, walking one and striking out six.

Houston’s Jonathan Villar was thrown out at the plate in the fifth inning as he was trying to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park home run.

His shot to center sailed over Eaton’s head and rolled to the wall atop Tal’s Hill before he was thrown out.

In his next plate appearance, Villar doubled in the seventh inning. He was thrown out in a rundown between third base and home on Jason Castro’s single. Villar also committed one fielding error on a wild throw to first base.

“We didn’t do ourselves a ton of favors,” Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. “We just found ways enough to not score than to score.”

The Associated Press CHICAGO – David Ross did just fine when he swung away.

After failing to execute a safety-squeeze in the ninth inning, Ross hit an RBI single with one out in the 11th inning Sunday that lifted the Cubs over the Kansas City Royals, 2-1.

“I’m playing the game out in my head. I knew what was coming the first time, and I didn’t get the bunt down, but luckily I drove that ball into the gap right there at the end,” Ross said with a smile.

The Cubs and Royals split the abbreviated two-game series. Saturday’s game was rained out and will be made up at Wrigley Field during the last week of the regular season.

Ross delivered the fifth game-ending hit of his career, a bases-loaded single just beyond the reach of shortstop Alcides Escobar, who tried to make a sliding, over-the-shoulder catch.

With runners on second and third, the Royals intentionally walked Starlin Castro to load the bases.

“I knew when they got to second and third, I knew they were going to walk Starlin. I’m batting a buck-60 or something, I would do the same thing.”

Despite the lack of power put on the ball, it was perfectly placed.

“Based on the configuration of the defense, you couldn’t have thrown the ball any better to end the ballgame,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said.

The ball was just out of the range of left fielder Alex Gordon.

“The ball was just dying. He (Escobar) looked at me, I know I didn’t call it, so he went after it and that was that,” Gordon said.

Earlier in the inning, Dexter Fowler was thrown out at the plate by Gordon when he tried to score on a single.

It was 47 degrees at gametime with the wind blowing in. The crowd included many Royals fans who made up the announced attendance of 37,766.

“It was a great game. The conditions were tough. You knew offense was going to come at a premium,” Royals manager Ned Yost said.

Zac Rosscup (2-1) struck out Salvador Perez with runners on first and third with two outs in the 11th.

Ryan Madson (0-1) walked Fowler and Kris Bryant to begin the 11th.

Jason Frasor relieved and Anthony Rizzo blooped a single, with a video replay confirming Fowler was out at the plate.

Between the Blackhawks’ veteran poise and the Tampa Bay Lightning’s young stars, the Stanley Cup Final will have no shortage of dynamic offensive talent playing on hockey’s biggest stage.

The Hawks begin the final series in their quest for a third NHL championship in six seasons when they visit Amalie Arena on Wednesday to face the Lightning, who are going for the second Stanley Cup title in franchise history after streaking through the Eastern Conference bracket with a series of gutsy victories.

Both teams got to the last round in dramatic fashion, winning Game 7 on the road in the conference finals. Both are surging with confidence after putting away the Anaheim Ducks and the New York Rangers, who finished with their conferences’ best regular-season records.

And both the Hawks and the Lightning know how to entertain. Hawks stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are in the midst of another spectacular postseason, while Tampa Bay boasts two-time NHL goal-scoring leader Steven Stamkos and the dynamic “Triplets” line featuring youngsters Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat and Nikita Kucherov.

“Certainly, watching their series against the Rangers, they have a lot of options with their skill, how dangerous they can be with putting pucks in the net,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said of the Lightning.

Here are some more reasons to watch these franchises’ first postseason meeting: ORIGINAL SIX: The Lightning is the first team in NHL history to play four Original Six teams in the postseason, staring down the history and tradition that comes with facing off against the oldest teams in hockey. RICHARDS’ RETURN: Brad Richards was a third-round pick by the Lightning in 1998, and the durable forward was a fixture in their lineup from 2000 until 2008. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2004 while leading Tampa Bay to the Stanley Cup title, scoring 26 points in 23 playoff games. He was traded to Dallas and went to the New York Rangers until he washed up last summer in Chicago, where he promptly resurrected his flagging career as a two-way forward. He is an important part of the Hawks’ lineup heading back to Florida, and Richards also carries an 8-0 career record in Game 7, if it comes to that. “(Richards) got a little quicker as the season progressed, a little more jump in his stride,” Quenneville said. “Noticeable as we got further in the playoffs, as well.”

GOALIE CHALLENGE: Corey Crawford backstopped the Hawks to the 2013 Stanley Cup, but he also got pulled from the lineup during the first round of this postseason. Tampa Bay’s Ben Bishop already has played 20 games in the postseason, and his last five against the Rangers either were shutouts (two at Madison Square Garden) or five-goal disappointments (3).

It soon will be known whether Crawford’s experience trumps the 6-foot-7 Bishop’s unusual matchup qualities.

For the Hawks, they are coming off a tough series that ended with surprising ease.

After six games of tense hockey in an extraordinary series, Game 7 was an incongruous rout. Toews was responsible for it, burnishing his reputation for big-game brilliance with a rebound goal just 2:23 in and another power-play score before 12 minutes elapsed.

“There was no easy games,” Toews said. “There was nothing given to us. There was no moments in this series were there any lulls, where we felt Anaheim maybe didn’t play their best hockey and we got away with it. We felt like we had to earn everything against that team. That was an incredible test for both teams.”

Johnson makes history with 10th win at Dover

By DAN GELSTON The Associated Press DOVER, Del. – Jimmie Johnson pulled away on the final restart Sunday to win at Dover International Speedway and become the fifth NASCAR driver with 10 or more Sprint Cup victories at a single track.

Johnson led the final 23 laps, staying out on cold tires when other contenders made late race pit stops. The six-time series champion has 10 wins in 27 career starts on the concrete mile track. He needed five extra laps beyond the scheduled 400 because a late accident brought out the caution.

He has four wins this season, 74 in his career and has won at least four times in a season 11 times.

Johnson took his familiar spot in victory lane and took a quick, congratulatory phone call from team owner Rick Hendrick.

Bourdais gets 1st IndyCar win of season

By NOAH TRISTER The Associated Press DETROIT – Sebastien Bourdais raced to his first IndyCar victory of the season Sunday, outlasting Takuma Sato in a caution-filled ending at Belle Isle.

Bourdais held on in his No. 11 Chevrolet in a race that was shortened from 70 laps to 68 because of a two-hour time limit. The first caution didn’t come until lap 37, but there were eight caution periods in all – as well as a red flag with 5:33 remaining on the clock.

Bourdais led coming out of the final caution and had little trouble staying in front. The French driver’s final lap of 1 minute, 17.9133 seconds was the fastest for anyone on the day.

Graham Rahal finished third. Indy 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya was awarded the pole based on entry points when qualifying Sunday morning was halted by bad weather. Montoya finished 10th.

Carlos Munoz, who won Saturday’s rain-shortened race, finished last Sunday.

Bourdais had enough fuel to finish strong after the string of cautions during the second half of the race. The red flag came after Penske teammates Will Power and Helio Castroneves crashed. The field came back under a yellow flag, which turned green with about 3:20 left.

Bourdais led Sato by 0.6 seconds after lap 66. By the end, his margin had almost tripled.

It was the 33rd IndyCar win of his career.

Bourdais’ victory for KVSH Racing was a bright spot for Chevrolet on what was otherwise a fine weekend for Honda. Munoz won Saturday in a Honda, and the next eight spots after Bourdais on Sunday were taken up by Hondas.

On a chilly, rainy day in the Detroit area, Montoya led for 35 laps, dominating the first half of the race.

In the auction, South’s four-spade jump-rebid is called a superaccept. It shows a maximum, four- or five-card support and a doubleton somewhere.

Faced with an unavoidable club loser because of the mirror distribution, an inexperienced player would wonder about the diamond queen. But a sharpshooter will know that there is no sense in thinking about it. Instead, declarer should arrange an elimination and endplay – our theme for the week.

There are three key points for declarer: Draw trumps, but have at least one left in each hand to benefit from a ruff-and-sluff.

Eliminate all of the cards in two of the side suits. Have an opponent on lead, so that when he leads the third side suit, it helps declarer to gain a trick or save a guess.

In this deal, South wins with dummy’s club ace, draws trumps, and cashes his three heart winners.

Then he casts adrift with his last club.

Whichever defender takes the trick is endplayed, forced either to lead a diamond, finding the queen for declarer, or to play a heart or club, conceding a ruff-and-sluff. ******

The study focused on 1,449 women who were asked every year about having hot flashes and night sweats.

Half of the women reported symptoms for more than seven years.

The younger they were when symptoms started, the longer they tended to last.

More than half of women who began having hot flashes when they still were having periods had symptoms for nearly 12 years or longer.

If symptoms started only after menopause had begun, they lasted about three years.

To be included in this study, women had to have had frequent symptoms. So it’s possible women with less frequent symptoms would have reported having them for fewer years. In other words, it may not be that half of all women entering menopause continue to have hot flashes seven years later.

But the study shows that plenty do.

For some women, hot flashes are a minor annoyance. For others, they severely disrupt quality of life. Just as that first patient I saw said she really didn’t understand what hot flashes were until she had experienced them, I’m sure we male physicians (and premenopausal female physicians) don’t really understand them either.

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll talk about some of the medical treatments and “home remedies” that can relieve the severity of hot flashes.

Dear Dr. K: I just experienced my first, fullblown menopausal hot flash. It was awful. How long can I expect hot flashes to continue?

Dear Reader: Your question reminds me of a patient I saw when I had recently finished my training. (Believe it or not, I was even younger then than I am now.) She said she had come to see me because of hot flashes. Then she said: “I had heard about hot flashes since I was a girl, and I thought I knew what to expect. But you can’t really imagine it until you’ve experienced it.”

I told her I had treatments that could help reduce her symptoms until they went away on their own. She asked me how long that would take, and I repeated what I had been taught – and what was in the textbooks: “A few years.”

Twenty years later, she was still having hot flashes. When she informed me of this, she added: “In my dictionary, doctor, 20 is more than ‘a few’ years.”

By that time, I knew this patient was not unique; I had seen plenty others like her. So I asked myself: Who are you going to believe, your textbook or your patients? It seemed to me the patients must be right. But I also knew doctors wouldn’t believe it until there was a scientific study of the question. The problem was none of my colleagues seemed interested in doing the study, because “everyone knows that hot flashes just last a few years.”

That’s how important discoveries don’t get made, and people suffer as a result.

Thankfully, someone finally did the study, and the textbooks are in for a change. The data were collected from a longterm (13 years thus far) women’s health study.

Virginia Dear Nancy: As you noted,

people are keeping their teeth longer. We now know a healthy mouth is important for good overall health, no matter what your age.

In addition to dentists, there are dental hygienists in many states who can provide care for people in nursing homes and homebound patients. Some specialize in treating the developmentally disabled and “difficult” populations.

Specially licensed dental hygienists can provide services outside of the dental office in the states that allow it, and can refer the patient to a dentist for further service. In the United States, individual states determine the scope of practice for providers, which includes what types of services dental hygienists may provide in that state.

Several states are working to expand their oral care workforce and improve access to care – in part to meet the growing aging population who are retaining their teeth.

In West Virginia, dental hygienists are permitted to deliver care in nursing homes and a variety of other settings.

Dear Abby: My mother has Alzheimer’s. She has been in a nursing home for 10 years. I feel sorry for her because she can’t verbalize her teeth are killing her, but I can see the pain in her face and hear her grind her teeth. When I asked her if her teeth hurt, she rubbed my arm up and down, which I took to mean yes. I asked for her to be seen by a doctor, but we have to wait at least six weeks to see one.

Something I would like people to know is there is little dental care available in nursing homes. Because of improved dental care by the general public, many more people arrive in nursing homes with their teeth intact than they used to.

This sounds good, but the problem is patients often refuse to allow anyone to assist them with oral hygiene.

Eventually they may become too frail to withstand the stress of surgery or other treatment that comes with failing teeth.

As I understand it, not many dentists are willing to shoulder the extra challenge of caring for this “difficult” population, or the red tape of getting paid for the care of patients in nursing homes.

It is important to take care of our teeth as we age.

Once we or our loved one enters a nursing home, we need to continue their dental hygiene to the best of our abilities. We can help overworked staff by encouraging our loved ones to brush and floss. Take them for a checkup every six months.

I can’t stand a toothache for a day. I wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone, especially someone with Alzheimer’s who cannot ask for help. I wish I had been more aware. Please let the
