Developer eyeing site near interstates for warehouses

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The crossroads of Interstates 55 and 80, once planned for a large lifestyle retail mall, now is being eyed for warehouse development.

The plan, called the “Hillwood Proposal,” is on the Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee’s agenda Wednesday.

Outgoing Mayor Thomas Giarrante said Monday the proposal is in its early stages. But the plan is to develop about 40 acres for retail and more than 200 acres for warehouses.

“We wanted to save it for retail. But the retail business is not turning around as fast as we hoped,” Giarrante said.

At one time, O&S Holdings, a California-based developer, planned to build a 1.5-millionsquare-foot lifestyle mall at the site. The new plan provides less than a quarter of

that amount of space for retail.

The O&S plan also included a man-made waterway, 200,000 square feet of office space and 800 residential units.

Construction was to begin in 2008 on the project, called Bridge Street Town Centre, with stores opening in 2011.

But the development never materialized after the economic recession hit.

Councilman Larry Hug said the opportunity for a large, lifestyle mall probably ended with the last economic boom.

“I’d be surprised if anyone decided to put a project like that anywhere in the next decade,” Hug said. “I don’t know if a lifestyle mall is a serious consideration – or at least as large a lifestyle mall.”

Hug said the new plan calls for nearly 350,000 square feet of retail. Another 3.3 million square feet would be devel-

oped for industrial use.

Other details of the plan, Hug said, include 2,027 parking spaces for employees and customers. Another 747 spaces are planned for trailers, which would be used at the warehouses.

“It sounds promising when you have 2,027 parking spots,” he said.

One stumbling block for the lifestyle mall also poses a problem for the new proposal, Giarrante said. The property needs access. There are no ramps off either interstate onto the site now.

O&S was looking for interstate ramps to bring vehicles to the property.

Giarrante said the new proposal, in the northeast corner of the interchange, seeks access from Jefferson Street and Houbolt Road.

The Economic Development Committee meets at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the City Council Chamber.

Liberian man sentenced to 38 years on sexual abuse charges

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Liberian immigrant was sentenced Monday to 38 years in prison for sexually abusing three young girls.

Rickie Brownson, 18, sobbed throughout the proceedings and repeatedly told Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes he was “not a bad kid” and would not hurt anybody.

But Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Mark Fleszewski said shortly after Brownson arrived stateside in July 2012, he began engaging in sex acts with three then-8-yearold girls at residences in Joliet and Bolingbrook – threatening to hurt them if they told anyone.

Fleszewski said Brownson continued molesting the victims until January 2013, when they told a young woman who

was subsequently “beaten up and ostracized,” Fleszewski said.

The prosecutor told Alessio Policandriotes about a meeting Brownson had with his father, Paul Brownson, and a local pastor, where he “lay on the ground crying ... [and] said it wouldn’t happen again.”

Paul Brownson testified Monday that he believes his Rickie son is innocent of the sexual Brownson abuse, has never been in trouble and enjoys helping people.

Rickie Brownson was tried as an adult in November. The girls all recanted their testimony from earlier court proceedings, victim interviews and medical examinations, but jurors reportedly believed

they’d been forced to lie.

“The mitigation in this case is the age of the defendant and the deficiencies of his father and his attempts to be smarter than anyone else,” Alessio Policandriotes said.

“While there are no criminal charges against [Paul Brownson], to say to [the victims] that this will stop [simply] because he says so is criminal.”

When questioning Paul Brownson, Fleszewski noted the victims are still receiving psychological counseling.

Brownson faced up to 120 years behind bars. Defense attorney Elizabeth Meyer noted he’d grown up in a camp in Liberia, was arrested at 16 and was leading a prayer group at the jail while studying for a GED. Brownson told the judge he’d like to pursue a career as a counselor or motivational speaker.

Crowd packs council chambers for new mayor, council members

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – New Mayor Bob O’Dekirk took office Monday, saying the people of Joliet can achieve great things working together but adding that he would respect disagreement.

O’Dekirk spoke in a council chambers packed with as many as 200 people, many of whom were standing in the hallway as family, friends and well-wishers saw now ex-Mayor Tom Giarrante make his exit and five other council members be sworn into office.

“What I think we demonstrated during the campaign is that different groups working together can achieve great things,” O’Dekirk told the crowd after taking the oath of office. “On the East Side and on the West Side, I will do the same – bring people together to do great things.”

A former policeman and now a lawyer, O’Dekirk talked about his participation Sunday in an anti-violence walk in the Forest Park neighborhood headed by the newly formed group Men of Valor, and said it was an example of people coming together in Joliet to make the community better.

O’Dekirk also said he would not let his appeal for togetherness stifle disagreement on the City Council.

Noting that the council has been criticized for being at odds at times in the last four years, O’Dekirk said, “I’m not going to criticize my peers because I think disagreement is good. ... I would encourage the council to disagree and debate as is needed.”

He did say that he expected the council to come together once decisions were made.

O’Dekirk also said he would be silent on most council votes and plans to only vote in case of a tie. The last two mayors, Giarrante and Arthur Schultz, voted on all issues.

Giarrante’s farewell

Giarrante made an emotional farewell speech, breaking down many times and having to stop to gather himself while thanking family, city staff and others who supported him during one term as mayor and 14 years on the City Council. He also served six years on the Joliet Park Board and was a Joliet firefighter.

“It’s been a great run that I really enjoyed,” Giarrante said. “However, I am looking forward to spending more time with my family.”

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Trustee Paul Fay was given a sendoff at Monday’s Plainfield Village Board re-organizational meeting before three members were sworn in.

Fay was presented a plaque

by Mayor Michael Collins on behalf of the village, honoring the outgoing trustee for his 12 years of service to the village.

“It seems so small to give you a plaque,” Collins said, noting that Fay went through a several board changes during his three terms. Several trustees also congratulated Fay. “It’s been an honor to represent Plainfield residents,” Fay said. “It’s an honor to have been voted into office and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I feel that three terms is enough.”

Fay decided not to run for re-election because he believes in term limits. He said he wants to encourage other people in the community to get involved.

Outgoing Plainfield Trustee Paul Fay greets people Monday night outside the Village Board room, where punch and cake were provided to celebrate his 12 years of service on the board.

Fay said he’s proud of several initiatives, including advancing conservation design in residential developments and promoting downtown businesses during the remodeling of Lockport Street through forming an ad-hoc committee and producing commercials.

Fay said one of his challenges was dealing with issues that residents may have been misinformed about. But he was still amazed at the input he had on residential and commercial developments.

“I was a part of it and that’s pretty amazing,” he said, leaving open the possibility of run-

ning for office for a different government entity in the future.

“It’s important for [incoming trustees] to always remember they are public servants and that they are stewards of the resources of Plainfield taxpayers,” Fay said.

After Fay was honored, trustees Bill Lamb, Edward O’Rourke and Brian Wojowski were sworn in. Lamb won re-election while O’Rourke and Wojowski won their first terms through the April 7 election.

The new Village Board unanimously voted in favor of a new 1.21-acre outlot in front

of Target in the Kensington South commercial development at the intersection Route 59 and 135th Street. Two buildings, sized 5,000 square feet and 4,500 square feet, would replace parking space in the development.

Another Kensington South item allowing installation of three monument signs was approved in a 6-1 vote, with O’Rourke dissenting.

O’Rourke wanted more negotiation, noting that the sign that largely advertises Target didn’t advertise the smaller businesses in the development enough.

Some trustees agreed, but voted it through after Edwards Realty Company representative Ramzi Hassan said it was the best that could be done considering Target’s contractual leverage.

Trustees also unanimously voted to subdivide the Cedar Lake Village senior housing development so 40 acres not yet constructed will be converted into a two-lot assisted living facility.

Councilwoman Bettye Gavin, District Four, who had been appointed in 2014 to fill a vacancy and won her first election, echoed O’Dekirk’s theme of working together.

Gavin said the large attendance at the ceremony “shows that we have great partnerships and relationships in our city, and we all can work together for the greatness of our city.”

Councilman Larry Hug, District One, in his comments repeated a point that he and O’Dekirk made during the campaign that the city needs

to hire an economic development professional to attract business to Joliet.

Councilman John Gerl, District Three, meanwhile, listed several new developments and businesses coming to Joliet as he said, “We have a lot of exciting things happening right now.”

Councilman Terry Morris, District Five, may have reflected the energy in the room when he noted it was his second term but said, “To me, this time seems a little more exciting than before – the opportunity to move the city forward more.”

Area nursing students to compete nationally

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Five nursing students from the Wilco Area Career Center will head to California this summer to compete in a national health care competition.

Students Tanya Chaudhuri, Cecelia Hoffman, Sara Martinez, Dylan Janoski and Rebecca Pachuta will take a trip this June for a contest by the Health Occupations Students of America, or HOSA. The student career organization is holding a national leadership conference.

The students come from Plainfield, Lockport and Bolingbrook high schools, but are enrolled in the certified nursing assistant program at the Wilco Area Career Center.

The center offers Will County area high school students career and technical education.

“I’m so very honored to be working with this group of students,” said Karen Aldworth, a certified nursing assistant instructor and registered nurse.

“They have worked very hard and they’re very determined.”

The students will be in Anaheim, California, from June 24 to 27. The competition will test their knowledge and they will perform in front of judges, Aldworth said.

The leadership conference also will offer general sessions, educational and social learning activities, leadership academies, tours of health care facilities and other opportunities.

Before qualifying, students had to compete against 800 others in a state HOSA competition held in Decatur in March.

Chaudhuri, Hoffman and Martinez took first, second and third places, respectively,

at the competition, Plainfield school officials said.

Aldworth said Wilco staff took 25 students to that competition. Five qualified for the national contest. It will be the largest group Wilco has taken to the conference, she said.

Participants will not only compete in nursing competitions, but in veterinary nursing and other health care fields, she said.

Aldworth said Wilco had two students land second and seventh place at the national contest last year.

Wilco Executive Director Karen Plese said it was exciting to have students in the top ranks of health care students across the country.

“They’re obviously doing a good job to produce students who can compete at this caliber,” Plese said. “We take it seriously and we have a good group of staff and students.”

Nationwide food drive held in Will, Grundy counties

JOLIET – Letter carriers will collect food donations left at mailboxes Saturday as part of a national effort to reduce hunger.

The National Association of Letter Carriers will conduct the 23rd annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive in more than 10,000 communities, including areas of Will and Grundy counties.

The NALC is asking people to leave bags of nonperishable

food items – such as canned soup, meats, vegetables and fruit – by their mailboxes Saturday.

Pam Donato, NALC community and membership outreach coordinator, said the concept is simple, but powerful.

“The power of 1,000, or 2,000, or 100,000 [people] in the same community just doing a little has translated to 1.3 billion pounds of food over 22 years we’ve done the drive,” she said.

She said the food drive is happening at a critical time, since some children from low-income backgrounds cannot access food once the school year ends.

“The timing of it for us is really important, as it helps stock the shelves of local community pantries just as kids get out of school,” Donato said.

All food donated will stay in the community and will not be shipped to a regional distribution center hundreds of miles away, according to the NALC. No special bags are needed.

Paper bags tend to be sturdy and hold more food, but plastic holds up better if it’s wet.

Cloth bags or boxes are good, as well.

In the past, many letter carriers collected food for people in need as part of a community service effort until NALC, the U.S. Postal Service and AFLCIO Community Services Department proposed a coordinated effort, according to NALC. A pilot drive held in 10 cities in 1991 proved successful enough to lead to a nationwide effort. In 2010, the food drive gathered more than 1 billion pounds of food.

lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – While casino revenues continue to drop, video gaming brought in more than $122,000 in tax revenue for Joliet in the first three months of 2015 – an increase from the $84,000 in revenue made about the same time last year.

In unincorporated Will County, where officials recently banned future video gaming, revenue stood at about $39,400 for the first three months of 2015, compared to $34,400 in revenue for the first quarter of 2014, according to the latest figures from the Illinois Gaming Board.

There’s a similar trend

statewide, with Illinois raking in $52.9 million between January and March, compared to the $34 million made in the first quarter of 2014.

The revenue increase occurred despite the number of gaming terminals statewide remaining steady in the past few months following a proliferation of them beginning in September 2012 – when the industry went live statewide.

The industry remains viable income for Joliet businesses with video gaming.

They raked in about $873,000 in March compared to February’s $812,646. In March 2014, Joliet establishments brought in about $650,000.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – All five people got out of a car before it was hit by a train over the weekend, police said Monday.

They were instead injured when their car went off the road and got stuck on the tracks.

The accident happened at 2:28 a.m. Saturday in the area where Dresden Road curves west and becomes North Street, police said. Instead of going west, the driver turned east, where there is no road, and ended up on the tracks.

Police said the driver, Alex Servello, 24, of Normal tried to get the car, a 2012 Ford Focus, off the tracks, but was unable to do so before it was hit by the train.

Servello was arrested for driving under the influence.

He also was cited for failure to reduce speed and illegal lane use. One of the passengers, Daniel Kimzey, 23, of New Lenox, was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol by a passenger.

Police said all five people from the car were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Two men killed in unrelated fatal car accidents Sunday have been identified.

In the first crash, Daniel W. Osysko, 26, of Manhattan was driving west on Route 52 when his Honda CRV left the roadway and overturned, State Police Trooper DeAnn Falat said. The crash occurred at 4:17 a.m. Sunday on Route 52 east of Cedar Road, where the road curves in Manhattan.

Falat said the vehicle struck the east side of a shed in the 27600 block of Route 52. Osysko was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not carrying any passengers.

Falat said Monday the cause of the crash remained under investigation. Osysko was not wearing a seat belt, according to police reports.

Five car-crash

Michael B. McCoy, 66, of Joliet died in a five-vehicle crash that occurred about 11:13 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 just west of Chicago Street in Joliet.

Falat said McCoy was driving a Chevrolet Colorado that left the westbound lanes and went across the median to strike the driver’s side of a Ford Taurus. After the Colorado and Taurus collided, they were struck by a Pontiac Grand Prix and a Marathon motor home, respectively.

Will County Environmental Health uses dead bird reports to monitor potential WNV hot spots and identify other possible trends requiring Health Department intervention.

WNV is a mosquito-borne disease capable of producing encephalitis and meningitis, potentially fatal inflammations of the brain and spinal chord.

Residents can minimize personal risk by avoiding outdoor activity at dusk and near dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

Flying debris from the crashes also struck a Chevrolet Silverado, Falat said.

McCoy was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said an autopsy performed Monday showed McCoy died from injuries he sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Taurus and the driver of the Grand Prix were hospitalized, Falat said. The motor home was the only vehicle involved in the crash carrying a passenger.

Lanes were closed for several hours Sunday while a traffic reconstruction unit investigated the accident. Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt.

QUICK NEWS JOLIET – Will County sheriff’s deputies were trained April 23 to administer naloxone, a drug used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

The training is part of the Will County Heroin Education Leads to Preventative Solutions initiative in the office of Will County Executive Larry Walsh, according to a news release from the county. The training of the 162

deputies was conducted by Jeff Jerz, a training instructor in the sheriff’s department.

“I applaud our Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley for making the decision to train all his deputies on the use of this powerful antidote,” Walsh said in the news release.

Will County Coroner Pat O’Neil donated $1,000 to help fund the initial purchase of naloxone and the nasal atomizers for the deputies. He said that donation

equals the cost of one autopsy and “will help equip 20 officers with this lifesaving drug, so I see this as a very worthy investment.”

The Hero Group, founded by John Roberts and Brian Kirk in response to losing their sons to heroin overdoses, made a $2,500 contribution to the sheriff’s department. Kirk said he is happy the sheriff’s department will have the antidote.

Joliet Chamber members are headed to Springfield

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Members of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry are set to head to Springfield on Tuesday to make their case for workers’ compensation reform and investments in business, transportation and infrastructure, among other priorities.

The annual “Springfield Drive Down” get-together with lawmakers comes at a time when the state is grappling with ballooning pension obligations and a $6 billion budget deficit heading into the next fiscal year.

But local Chamber officials have Gov. Bruce Rauner as an ally in Springfield when it comes to workers’ comp and other pro-business policies.

Mike Paone, vice president for member services at the Joliet Region chamber of Commerce, said the chamber plans to push – as Rauner is doing – for more stringent

regulations for the state’s workers’ compensation insurance system.

“Many of our businesses agree that premiums are through the roof. We’re heads above compared to bordering states,” Paone said.

The day’s agenda includes meetings with local lawmakers, including Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, and a briefing from the Illinois Department of Transportation, Paone said.

Paone said he hopes to get a better sense where the proposed Illiana Expressway project stands. Earlier this year, the Rauner administration put all major transportation projects, including the Illiana, on hold pending further review.

“The main thing is … if they’re going to stall, or not progress at all, we have a lot of other transportation issues here. I-80 needs some widening,” Paone said. “There is a lot of traffic, not just trucks, that travel through the I-80,

I-55 corridor here in Joliet.”

Paone said the chamber will be armed with a new survey from its members as they discuss proposed minimum wage hikes with lawmakers, Paone said.

There’s “not overwhelming support” from chamber members for a minimum wage increase, Paone said. In a recent survey of members – businesses, employees, colleges and nonprofits included – about 70 percent said they opposed a $11-per-hour minimum wage, while about 55 percent said they opposed a $10-per-hour minimum wage, Paone said.

Paone said the chamber also will be ready to discuss its opposition to recently resurfaced proposals for additional casinos in Illinois, including one in Chicago. A state lawmaker panel heard testimony Monday from gambling experts.

“We strongly oppose [gambling] expansion,” Paone said.

Firefighters extinguish house fire in Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Abbey Poole said she was woken by a neighbor pounding on her door in the early morning hours Monday, alerting her that her home was on fire.

“Our neighbors saved our life,” she said. “I’m very thankful. We are safe, the kids are safe. The car and house can be replaced.”

Poole’s husband, Dan, called 911 as the family exited the home with their daughters, 6 and 8 years old, in tow.

The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District reported to 604 W. Washington St. after receiving a call at 3:24 a.m. about the fire. Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said in a news release that the first engine arrived within minutes from the downtown fire station.

Heavy fire at the rear exterior of the house was visible. The engine extinguished a portion of the fire and the remaining fire units arrived and entered the home, extinguishing the fire on the first floor, according to the news release.

When crews arrival, the homeowners told them that everyone was accounted for and outside. Poole said another neighbor took in her children and the family dog, whose paw was cut on glass.

The fire remained under investigation Monday, but appeared to have started on the rear outside portion of the residence, according to the news release. Poole said she was told by fire department officials that it appears the fire started where the electric lines from power pole meet the power box on the back of her home.

Preliminary damage estimates are about $100,000, according to the news release.

There was damage to a garage and one vehicle at the rear of the home in addition to the house itself. Poole said the insurance adjuster would be at the home Monday afternoon, but she believes the cost will be much greater.

Morris was assisted by the Coal City, Minooka, and Channahon fire departments. The Lisbon Fire Department and a Seneca ambulance stood by for the Morris stations.

RITA FLORENCE ALLEN Rita Florence Allen (LeBlanc), of Madison, a sweet and gentle woman passed from this world on Sunday, April 26, 2015, into the arms of Jesus.

Rita was born in the small farming village of Tingwick, Quebec, Canada on December 7, 1919. She was the third of Hormisdas and Mary Jeanne (Poisson) LeBlanc’s six children. In search of work, her family immigrated to Flint, Michigan in 1929, and it was there she grew up, went to work and met her husband, Guion J. (Al) Allen, a World War II veteran from North Carolina. Married in February of 1948, this union produced five children.

Al’s promotions in commercial bakery management moved the family throughout the north central and northeastern United States. At each location, Rita volunteered at her children’s schools and in her local parishes’ Altar and Rosary societies.

By the time Rita and Al were working in Naperville, Illinois, children were out of the house, and they eased into retirement. They purchased homes in Phoenix, Arizonia and Minooka, Illinois to be near family. Until Al’s death in 2007, they enjoyed winters in Arizona’s sunshine and summers on the Illinois prairie. Center to Rita’s world was her Christian faith. Raised in the Roman Catholic tradition, she generously shared this faith with her family - a faith that sustains and comforts us with our loss.

In addition to many in-laws, nieces and nephews, Rita’s survivors include a sister, Sr. Lucienne LeBlanc, IHM of Monroe, MI; children, Charles (Carol) of Minooka, IL, Gregory of Phoenix, AZ, Jean (Don) Newhall of Plainfield, IL, Joanne (Paul) Stoffel of Madison, WI, and Robert (Laura) of Yorkville, IL; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Maurice and Paul; sisters, Irma (in infancy) and Sr. Jeanne LeBlanc, IHM. Many thanks to all whose lives were touched by her caring nature, for their kind words of support and shared loss - and especially to those

whose caring sustained her life: in particular, the compassionate staff at Oak Park Place Memory Care II and Agrace HospiceCare.

EMANUEL FATTORE Emanuel Fattore, age 92, a resident of Joliet, passed away peacefully at Silverado Naperville with his loving family by his side.

Born October 22, 1922, in Saint Eufemia a Maiella (Pescara) Italy, he was son of Antonio and Anna Concetta (DiNardo) Fattore. Retired from Caterpillar, Inc. where he

worked as a machinist for over 35 years.

Emanuel was dedicated to his family and instilled in his children a work ethic, second to none. A proud man, principled and true to his word. Immigrated to America in 1963 to search of better opportunities. He lived to realize his dream of college educations for his children.

And that dream continued as three of his grand children have earned college degrees to date. Being a grandfather (Nonno) provided him much happiness.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 57 years, Rosa (Zianni) Fattore; and his children, son, Frank (Patti nee Smith); two daughters, Anna Concetta (Timothy) Broderick and Lola (Robert) Mann. He will be remembered for his woodworking, and his family will have many treasured keepsakes which he enjoyed making for them.

Medical marijuana approved for PTSD, osteoarthritis

CHICAGO – Illinois’ new medical marijuana program would cover thousands, perhaps millions, more patients under expansive recommendations that an advisory board agreed to Monday.

Osteoarthritis alone affects about 1.5 million people in Illinois.

It is one of 11 conditions approved by a board made up of doctors, nurses, patients and a pharmacist. At a public meeting in Chicago, the board also recommended migraine, neuropathy and post-traumatic stress disorder be added to the list of qualifying conditions, but not anxiety or diabetes.

The state Department of Public Health will consider the recommendations.

Board member Jim Champion, who is a military veteran, announced the board’s unanimous approval for adding PTSD, saying he was “very, very proud.”

Gambling hearings bring expansion talks back into spotlight

CHICAGO – With a budget deadline to attempt closing a roughly $6 billion shortfall weeks away, top Illinois leaders and lawmakers are putting the spotlight on revenue-generating plans to increase the number of casinos and slot machines in the state.

Two Chicago hearings – one on Monday and the other planned for next week – are drawing on experts to mull proposals, a move that comes as attention to a possible Chicago casino appears to be heightened.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has advocated for a city casino for years. In 2013 he released a video pledging all revenues would go to schools. More recently, he’s been in talks with Senate Pres-

New rules stop solitary confinement for juvenile inmates

SPRINGFIELD – A federal court agreement severely restricting the use of solitary confinement on

juvenile offenders in state lockups will ease the debilitating mental effects of such punishment, an advocacy group at the center of a lawsuit against the state said Monday.

The teenage inmates who are put in locked rooms by themselves at any given time will have to have interaction with staff, a book to read, and receive mental health treatment under terms of the agreement the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice signed with the American Civil Liberties Union, which filed a federal class-action lawsuit to stop the practice.

The lawsuit’s lead lawyer, Adam Schwartz, said the rules effectively banish the use of solitary confinement in the state’s six juvenile detention centers.

Youths will have a minimum of eight hours away from isolation if they are confined for a day or longer, Schwartz said.

“During that eight hours, they

have the opportunity to talk to and be in the company of staff,” he said. They’ll also be able to get mental health treatment, education and exercise during the break.

5 companies sued for student loan repayment scams

CHICAGO – Illinois’ attorney general has filed lawsuits against five companies and is accusing them of scamming people who need to repay student loan debt.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed the lawsuits Monday.

Her office says the scammers charge borrowers costly upfront fees with the false promise that their debt will be forgiven or decreased. Madigan also said the scammers will charge for options that are already available to borrowers for free.

Madigan said the companies – based in California, Illinois, Florida, Georgia and Texas – violate an

Illinois law that bans charging upfront fees for debt settlement services.

The Illinois attorney general’s office also has a helpline for borrowers with student loans. It’s available at 800-455-2456.

Cleanup nears completion at former factory site

ORLAND PARK – State environmental officials say pollution cleanup at a former Orland Park industrial site might be completed.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says it’s reviewing a report by a consultant hired to clean up the 75-acre site where Andrew Corp. made wireless communications equipment for decades.

The Daily Southtown reported the consultant, Environmental Resources Management, believes the cleanup is “essentially done.”

WASHINGTON – Since at least 2007, the FBI has been able to recognize the voice of Elton Simpson – one of the men suspected in the Texas shootings outside a contest featuring cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad.

Agents recorded the young man from Phoenix talking about fighting nonbelievers for Allah. About plans to travel to South Africa and link up with “brothers” in Somalia.

About using school as a cover story for traveling overseas.

Simpson was arrested in 2010, one day before authorities said he planned to leave for South Africa.

But despite more than 1,500 hours of recorded conversations, the government prosecuted him on only one minor charge – lying to a federal agent. Years spent investigating Simpson for terrorism ties resulted in three years of probation and $600 in fines and court fees.

Then, on Sunday, two men whom authorities identified as Simpson and Nadir Soofi opened fire in a Dallas suburb on a security officer stationed outside the contest. The officials spoke only on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation by name.

Pentagon accused of withholding information WASHINGTON – In a scathing critique of the Defense Department’s efforts to curb sexual assaults, a U.S. senator warned Monday that the true scope

of sex-related violence in the military communities is “vastly underreported” and that victims continue to struggle for justice.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said in a report that the Pentagon refused to provide her with all the information she requested about sexual assaults at several major bases. The material she did receive revealed that the spouses of service members and civilian women who live or work near military facilities are especially vulnerable to being sexually assaulted. Yet they “remain in the shadows” because neither is counted in Defense Department surveys to determine the prevalence of sexual assaults, the report said.

“I don’t think the military is being honest about the problem,” Gillibrand said in an interview.

Ex-Christie allies plead not guilty in bridge case

NEWARK, N.J. – Two former political allies of Gov. Chris Christie pleaded not guilty Monday to charges they were involved in politically motivated lane closures of the George Washington Bridge, and the attorney for one vowed to subpoena her former colleagues to prove her innocence.

Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, Bridget Kelly, and his former top appointee at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Bill Baroni, entered the pleas through their attorneys in the nine-count indictment unsealed Friday after a yearlong investigation.

Obama on protests: ‘There are consequences to indifference’

By NEDRA PICKLER and JIM KUHNHENN The Associated Press NEW YORK – In a deeply personal response to outbreaks of racially motivated protests, President Barack Obama on Monday blamed a lack of opportunity in minority communities and harsher treatment of black and Hispanic men by police for fueling a sense of “unfairness and powerlessness.”

The country’s first black president called for a nationwide mobilization to reverse inequalities and said the cause will remain a mission for the rest of his presidency and his life. “There are consequences to indifference,” Obama said.

Helping launch a foundation to assist young minorities, Obama said the catalysts of protests in Ferguson, Missouri, and in Baltimore were the deaths of young black men and “a feeling that law is not always applied evenly in this country.”

“They experience being treated differently by law enforcement – in stops and in

arrests, and in charges and incarcerations,” Obama said.

“The statistics are clear, up and down the criminal justice system. There’s no dispute.”

The new organization, My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, is an outgrowth of Obama’s year-old My Brother’s Keeper initiative, which has focused on federal government policies and grants designed to increase access to education and jobs.

While the effort predates the tensions in Baltimore that erupted after the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody, the significance of the new private-sector alliance has been magnified by the spotlight the riots in the city placed on low-income minority neighborhoods. “By almost every measure, the life chances of the average young man of color is worse than his peers,” Obama said.

“Folks living in those communities, and especially young people living in those communities, could use some help to change those odds,” Obama said.

Despite his criticism of inequities in criminal justice,

Obama praised police officers for putting their lives on the line and singled out Brian Moore, a 25-year-old New York City police officer shot in the head over the weekend while attempting to stop a man suspected of carrying a handgun. He said police “deserve our gratitude and our prayers, not just today but every day. They’ve got a tough job.”

“We ask police to go into communities where there is no hope,” he said. “Eventually, something happens because of the tension between society and these communities, and the police are just on the front lines of that.”

Obama described the plight of young minority men in deeply personal terms, alluding to his own youth raised by a single mother.

“I grew up without a dad.

I grew up lost sometimes and adrift, not having a sense of a clear path,” he said, adding that he was lucky because he was in an environment where people cared for him.

“Really, that’s what this comes down to – do we love these kids?” he said.

Boston Marathon bomber cries at death penalty trial

By DENISE LAVOIE The Associated Press BOSTON – For the first time in court, Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev dropped his blank, impassive demeanor and cried as his sobbing aunt briefly took the stand Monday in his federal death penalty trial.

Tsarnaev, 21, wiped tears from his eyes quickly and fidgeted in his chair as his mother’s sister sobbed uncontrollably.

He had maintained a disinterested expression since his trial began in January.

The aunt, Patimat Suleimanova, cried as she sat down about 10 feet from Tsarnaev.

The tears began falling before she began to testify, and she was only able to answer questions about her name, her year of birth and where she was born.

After a few minutes, Judge George O’Toole Jr. suggested that the defense call a different

witness so she could compose herself. As she left the witness stand, Tsarnaev used a tissue to wipe his eyes and nose.

Five relatives – three cousins and two aunts – took the witness stand, though the aunt who broke down did not complete her testimony. As Tsarnaev was led out of the courtroom before the lunch recess, he blew a kiss at the other aunt, who also cried during her testimony. The relatives acknowledged they had not seen Tsarnaev since he was 8, when he moved to the U.S. with his family.

Tsarnaev, who had lived in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan and the Dagestan region of Russia, was convicted last month of 30 federal charges in the bombings, including 17 that carry the possibility of the death penalty. He moved to the U.S. in 2002 and committed the bombings, which killed three people and wounded 260 others, when he was 19.

NYPD retraining puts focus on talking arrestees into handcuffs

By TOM HAYS and COLLEEN LONG The Associated Press NEW YORK – Two New York City cops approach a gray sedan with a suspected drunken driver slumped over the wheel. They ask him to get out, and that’s when the trouble begins.

The suspect, dressed in a rumpled suit, curses and hollers at the officers because he doesn’t want to go to jail. He refuses to be handcuffed and backs away, yelling, “Can’t we work this out?”

But even as the man’s temper rises, the officers stay impassive and firm, explaining why they need to take him downtown. Eventually, the man calms down and gives up.

“I’ve realized,” Detective Leonardo Pino said, “that if I try to meet his tone with my tone, it doesn’t get better.”

The scenario was fake – the suspected drunken driver was a fellow officer and the street scene was a set built in a Hollywood-style sound stage. It’s

all part of a massive, acrossthe-board retraining ordered for the nation’s largest police force in the wake of last year’s fatal arrest of Eric Garner.

The Associated Press got an exclusive look at the New York Police Department’s three-day course that’s aimed at discouraging verbal abuse and needless physical force.

The message to every one of the department’s 35,000 officers is, quite simply, keep cool.

Cynicism, condescension and complacency are a formula for escalating emotions that can put civilians – and officers’ careers – in harm’s way. As one instructor put it in a recent classroom session, “Once you put your hands on someone, you can’t go back.”

The instructors that day didn’t mention Garner, the unarmed black man from Staten Island whose videotaped death in a chokehold – a tactic banned by the NYPD more than 20 years ago – fueled loud protests against police. But

the case hangs heavy over the retraining, as do the ongoing protests in Baltimore, where a black suspect died of a spinal cord injury after his April 12 arrest.

“We want to talk people into their cuffs,” said Lt. Suzanne St. Jacques, NYPD commanding officer for physical training and tactics. “We want to talk them down into compliance, de-escalate the situation. ... The emphasis right now is the talk down before the takedown.”

Even when enforcing the law gets messy, officers “have to have a thick skin,” said First Deputy Police Commissioner Benjamin B. Tucker, who oversees the police academy.

“People will goad you.

People will say things to you.

Face it – not everybody loves a cop,” Tucker said. “But even when they don’t like you, you have a responsibility to respect them and leave them with their dignity even as you do your job.”

Shakhruzat Suleimanova, a sister of Dzhokhar’s mother, Zubeidat, testified that Dzhokhar, Tamerlan and their two sisters were well-behaved as children.

“They were so good. They wouldn’t hurt a fly,” she said.

Suleimanova said the family was crushed when Zubeidat moved to the U.S. with her husband and children. Five or six years later, when Zubeidat returned to Russia for a visit, she was shocked to see her sister, always a fashionable dresser, cloaked in black and wearing a Muslim headscarf.

Google starts small, thinks big with its new ‘Project Fi’

– Google wants the wireless services that connect mobile devices to digital content to be cheaper and more reliable.

The reason has as much to do with the pursuit of profit as with trying to make smartphones more useful.

More time spent using Google’s dominant search engine or watching videos on its popular YouTube site translates into more opportunities for the company to show its moneymaking ads.

Enter “Project Fi,” the Internet company’s recently launched attempt to usher in new ways to keep smartphones online while lowering the cost for streaming video, listening to music, getting directions and searching for information.

“Wireless connectivity has become so essential that it’s kind of like our lifeblood,” said Nick Fox, the Google Inc. executive over-

seeing Project Fi. “This gives us a playground where we can try things out.”

In a break from the status quo, Project Fi will cost just $20 for basic service and then only charge for the amount of data consumed over cellular networks Google is leasing from T-Mobile and Sprint.

Most plans charge a flat rate under metered plans that limit customers to a specific amount of data.

Google’s service also is promising to automatically switch customers to publicly available Wi-Fi networks to avoid incurring charges for using data on the cellular networks.

Although Fox wouldn’t disclose how many customers Project Fi will accept, it’s clearly going to be a relatively small pool of U.S. consumers at the outset. Getting on the wireless service requires a Nexus 6 smartphone, a model made by Motorola for Google as a showcase for how it would like its services to work with its Android operating system.

Prince William and his wife, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, on Monday announced the name they picked for Britain’s newborn princess, a choice seen as a tribute to both Prince William’s parents and grandmother, the queen, as well as a link to Kate’s family.

The princess, the second child of William and Kate, will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, royal officials said.

The birth of Princess Charlotte marks a new chapter for William and Kate, widely seen as the monarchy’s most mod-

ern, popular couple. But the names they chose are firmly rooted in royal family history.

Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles, appears to be a nod to the newborn’s grandfather, Prince Charles. The baby’s middle names honor Queen Elizabeth II, the infant’s 89-year-old great-grandmother, and the late Princess Diana, William’s mother and the baby’s grandmother.

Charlotte also features in Kate’s family, as the middle name of her sister, Pippa Middleton.

The newborn princess is fourth in line to the throne after Charles, William and her older brother, 21-month-old Prince George.

William and Kate introduced the baby princess to the world Saturday evening, only 12 hours after Kate checked

into St. Mary’s Hospital in London to give birth. The baby weighed in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces.

Her name was warmly welcomed Monday by royal fans. Some were particularly pleased about the tribute to Diana, still remembered fondly by many. Diana, who died in 1997 at age 36, gave birth to William and Harry at the same London hospital where Charlotte was born.

“I so much wanted the name Diana to be in there somewhere,” said Munever Halil, 52. “I wanted it to be Elizabeth Diana, so I think it’s lovely.”

Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother, also approved of the choice. “Perfect names. My 2-year-old Charlotte Diana will be thrilled at cousinly name-sharing,” he tweeted.

Earlier Monday, Westminster Abbey’s bells pealed and gun salutes were fired across London in honor of the newborn princess. In a display of traditional pageantry, dozens of deafening volleys were fired from Hyde Park and the Tower of London to mark the occasion.

The royal couple had kept the world guessing about the baby’s name until after both sets of grandparents got a chance to visit Kensington Palace on Sunday to meet their granddaughter.

No jihadi banners were raised. Al-Qaida even issued a statement denying rumors it had banned music at parties or men wearing shorts.

The approach was a stark contrast to al-Qaida’s rival, the Islamic State group, notorious for its savagery. And that precisely was the point.

In a competition with the Islamic State group for recruits and prestige across the Middle East, al-Qaida has sought to distinguish itself from its rival’s bloodthirstiness, taking an approach that in jihadi circles would be considered pragmatic. It is building alliances with local players, even old enemies, to seize new territory.

Its leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, has told his followers to avoid IS-style brutalities against civilians in order to build support among local populations.

The strategy has paid off, winning new gains for al-Qaida. In Yemen, it even stands to emerge as the real winner as Saudi Arabia leads an Arab air campaign targeting the terror network’s rival, the Iranian-backed Shiite rebels known as Houthis who have taken over much of the country.

Al-Qaida “is the future Trojan horse,” warned a senior Yemeni military intelligence officer, Ali Sharif. When the war is over and leaves a security vacuum, he said, “the role of al-Qaida will come. ... They will fill it and take control.”

While the West might hope that the competition between al-Qaida and the Islamic State group would weaken two major militant threats, each is instead maneuvering to benefit from the region’s turmoil.

KATHMANDU, Nepal – Nepal’s government will need immense international support as the Himalayan nation begins turning its attention toward reconstruction in the coming weeks, in the wake of the devastating April earthquake, a top official said Monday.

Nepal is one of the world’s poorest nations, and its economy – largely based on tourism – has been crippled by the earthquake, which left more than 7,300 people dead. While there are no clear estimates yet of how much it will cost to rebuild, it certainly will be enormously expensive.

“In two to three weeks, a serious reconstruction package needs to be developed, where we’ll need enormous help from the international community,” said Information Minister Minendra Rijal.

“There’s a huge, huge funding gap.”

He also said foreign rescue workers were welcome in Nepal, saying they could remain as long as they are needed. He earlier had said the need for their services was diminishing but later denied he wanted them to leave the country.

Kathmandu’s main airport remained closed since Sunday to large aircraft delivering aid due to runaway damage, but U.N. officials said the overall logistics situation was improving.

The airport was built to handle only medium-size jetliners, but not the large military and cargo planes that have been flying in aid supplies, food, medicines, and rescue and humanitarian workers, said Birendra Shrestha, the manager of Tribhuwan International Airport.

There have been reports of cracks on the runway and other problems at the only airport in Nepal capable of handling jetliners.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Mayor should do what’s best for Rialto To the Editor:

One good thing came from the entire Rialto episode – the Rialto and its needs have become important again.

I, like many, joined “The Rialto Belongs To The People” Facebook page to preserve the Rialto’s marquee. It was a noble cause. Unfortunately, the goal shifted. It became clear the leadership no longer was concerned with the marquee. Instead, it was focused on becoming headhunting conspiracy theorists with personal agendas.

The mean-spirited and continual bashing of people on the Facebook page was too much for many to handle. Attacks were witnessed on a daily basis on those who wanted to stay focused on the preserving the marquee. People either were removed from the group or forced to leave for the sake of their own sanity.

The toxic damage that Facebook page has caused is frightening. Good people have and are attacked personally and professionally. Employees

have been taken from their daily roles to spend countless hours researching, reviewing and copying documents for FOIA requests – only to have them not picked up, once fees were accessed.

I also submitted my résumé in regard to the WCMEAA open position. After hearing the credentials Mr. [Nicholas] Macris possess, he was and is an excellent, unbiased choice. After all, the WCMEAA is a business and is not about history or antiques.

If the performance of the Rialto Belongs To the People’s Go Fund Me fundraiser is any indication of how this group and its leaders feel a business runs, you might want to just board up the theater now.

Mayor elect, remember whomever you appoint will be your legacy for years to come. Mary Beth Gannon is simply not the best for the job. Ask yourself: Where would everyone be if the last four months were surrounded by positive thinking and active fundraising?

Legislative working group shows tough times ahead The new legislative “working groups” designed to hammer out compromises on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda” finally began meeting in secret last week. At least one of them got a bit heated.

A working group tasked with writing ethics legislation hit a brick wall right off the bat when it came time to discuss Rauner term limits constitutional amendment.

Two Democrats on the committee reportedly said there was plenty of time to deal with the amendment next year, since it couldn’t be placed onto the ballot until November 2016.

Nope, the administration representative said, according to sources. The governor wants that amendment passed by the end of the spring legislative session. When he was met with stiff resistance, the administration official reportedly became agitated and more than implied if the constitutional amendment isn’t passed by May 31, then Rauner would not support any revenue increases to patch next fiscal year’s massive $6

The Democrats were shocked. Would the governor really threaten to crash the entire government over a term limits bill?

Yep. And that message apparently was sent to pretty much all of the working groups last week. Pass this stuff or deal with the horrific consequences of allowing the temporary income tax hike to partially expire.

The governor repeatedly has said he fully intends to take advantage of the budget crisis in order to push his agenda through the General Assembly.

And he has made no bones about what he wants. Term limits have been on his agenda since Day 1 of his campaign.

So, the threat shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise. Still, some Democrats were thunderstruck last week.

Every poll has shown the public is wildly enthusiastic about term limits. But legislators? Not so much. There are sound policy arguments

VIEWS Rich Miller against the simplistic solution, including the danger it would empower experienced lobbyists and staff even more than they already are. Still, the idea’s popularity means if it’s put on the floor for a final vote, legislators will be put in a highly uncomfortable position, and many will have to vote for it – so they absolutely don’t want to be backed into that corner.

Not everything went horribly. The ethics working group, for instance, eventually decided to skip over term limits for now in order to prevent a meltdown. It plans to take up a proposal to codify one of the governor’s executive orders on state employee ethics, which is viewed as pretty much a no-brainer.

The working group also will tackle the governor’s “conflict of interest” legislation, which would, in part, ban direct cam-

paign contributions to members of the executive branch from public employee unions that negotiate employment contracts. The proposal also would ban contributions from hospitals and nursing homes that receive Medicaid funds.

Surprisingly enough, legislative Democrats are open to those ideas. One reason is a bit on the crass side. The less money unions such as AFSCME can give to gubernatorial and other statewide candidates, the more money the unions will be able to contribute to legislative candidates. Plus, as we’ve seen time and time again, money pretty much always finds a way around statutory barricades. AFSCME, for instance, simply could give money to the Democratic Governors Association or the Democratic Party of Illinois or start its own “dark money” independent expenditure PAC. And apparently there’s even room for compromise on the term limits amendment, insiders say. One reported Rauner fallback position is to apply

the limits only to newly elected legislators, perhaps sometime down the road.

But even if they can reach an accord on all of the governor’s proposal, they still will have to deal with the horrendous budget deficit. One of the smartest people I know at the Statehouse took me aside the other day and confided he was alarmed about the coming problem.

The budget hole is estimated to be at least $6 billion. But, this person said, let’s just say Rauner agrees to $3 billion in tax hikes along with $3 billion in cuts. How the heck does he get that turkey passed? The General Assembly spent weeks fighting over a mere $26 million in cuts to this fiscal year’s budget. Who will vote to cut $3 billion? And what Democrat will vote to raise taxes by $3 billion when that means another $3 billion will have to be cut?

Tough times ahead.

Plainfield North defeats Plainfield Central

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Jane Crowe was pleased with how her Plainfield North girls soccer team performed during the first few weeks of the season.

An 11-0-2 start was capped a week ago by a trip to the PepsiCo Showdown championship match against defending state champion New Trier.

The Tigers fell, 2-0, in that contest, but Crowe liked how her squad played. However, things haven’t gone so well in the next four outings, which North has split.

Although losses against highly ranked Naperville North and Wheaton North squads are nothing to be ashamed of, the Tigers coach didn’t like how her team played.

And although North improved to 5-0 in Southwest Prairie Conference play Monday with a 4-2 victory at Plainfield Central, the squad again didn’t perform well in its coach’s estimation.

“We haven’t played well since we played New Trier,” Crowe said. “To lose to Naperville North, 1-0, wasn’t a bad loss, but we didn’t play well.

And then we didn’t play well on Saturday morning (against Wheaton North). We did not play well in our win against Plainfield South, and we played terribly today. Yes, we came out of here with a win, but my concern is that we have to turn it around quickly.

“We got that fourth goal today and just kind of said, ‘Oh, we’re done’. And then Central came back and got that restart goal and the corner kick goal. I think part of it is that the girls are a little worn out because they’ve been through such a tough stretch. So it’s nice that we have just one more this week and probably one next, and then we’ll have a whole week to rest, and that’s what we need right now.”

The Tigers (13-3-2, 5-0) looked as if they might have few difficulties against the Wildcats (8-9, 3-2) after scoring a goal in the 40th minute and another in the 43rd minute to grab a 4-0 advantage.

“I have no problem with the effort that we gave today,” Wildcats coach Ken Schoen

said. “But against a team like North that’s very talented and skilled, you have to make them earn their goals, and I think that we gave them a couple of goals. But to the girls’ credit, we didn’t get down after giving up that fourth goal, and they had a good second half. I think that we played hard the whole way through.

“We have two more conference games, and if we come out like this, we have a good chance to go 5-2 and take second place, which is nothing to be ashamed about. I like our team’s togetherness. They’re a positive group that gets along well, and they don’t get down, and I think that showed today.

As a coach, what else can you ask for?”

Shortly after hitting the crossbar on a liner, Sam Elster found Megan Breier, who got free near the goal and put in a short attempt in the 13th min-

ute to put North up for good.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the 32nd minute when Kendyl Keay sent a pass to Breier, who again was able to connect from close range.

Not long after North’s Brooke Polonus bounced a long free kick off the crossbar, Central had two good chances, but Erin Graefen’s free kick from just beyond the top of the box sailed over the net, and keeper Emma Veselsky halted a long try by Paige Fuller.

With less than half a minute left in the first half, Breier got off a short try that was deflected by keeper Sophia Tuliglowski, but the ball bounced to Jessica Christmas, who put in the rebound.

After the Wildcats keeper made a diving stop of an Elster effort early in the second half, North took a 4-0 lead when Elster found Christmas, who put in a short shot.

Central finally scored in the 54th minute when North committed a foul just outside the box and Maddie Conroy placed a free kick into the opposite upper corner.

North nearly got a goal back a bit later when Polonus was thwarted on a free kick from the top of the box and, on the subsequent corner kick from Elster, Polonus got off a dangerous header, but the ball was cleared.

The Wildcats closed the scoring in the 66th minute after a Fuller corner was deflected and Erin Mihelich’s short try was cleared for another corner. This effort from Fuller also went in front of the net, but this time McKenna Young connected from close-range.

After clears on threats by Fuller and Sarah Graham, Tuliglowski came up with big saves on a header by Polonus and a short effort from Elster.

A year ago, former JackHammers manager Jeff Isom returned to Joliet to manage the Slammers.

He was hoping the team he put together would be a contender in the Frontier League.

But the Slammers got off to a bad start and never recovered, although they were playing better at the end of the season.

They finished 40-56 and 21 games out of first place.

“I’m more confident now than I was at this time last year,” Isom said Monday. “I know we can contend.”

The Slammers, who have been practicing for about a week, will begin their exhibition games Tuesday afternoon at Schaumburg. Home games are scheduled for 10:05 a.m. Wednesday against Normal at Silver Cross Field and 7:05 p.m. Friday against Windy City. In addition, they will meet Rockford at 7 p.m.

Monday at Benedictine in Lisle.

The regular season begins May 14 at Florence. The home season will begin May 19.

“I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen,” Isom said. “And a big thing in our favor is the schedule. We have a ton of home games early. We have to do some damage early. We didn’t do that last year.”

The Slammers have 35 players in camp, and Isom must cut to 24 by the season opener.

“If I had to make the cuts now, I don’t think I could do it,” he said. “There are lots of tough decisions to be made.

I’m looking forward to our exhibition schedule. Those games will help make the decisions.”

There are familiar names in camp, led by first baseman/ designated hitter Russell Moldenhauer, who will be wearing another hat. Moldenhauer hit .298 with nine home runs and 62 RBIs a year ago, and now he also will impart his knowledge to teammates in an official capacity.

The biggest boosts to the offense could come from outfielder Nate Roberts and first baseman Chris Serritella.

“When he was a freshman at Northwestern, their coach, Paul Stevens, said Nate was the best freshman hitter he had ever seen,” Isom said. “He then went to Parkland and to High Point University. The Twins drafted him in the fifth round.

“He’s been battling injuries in his career. But he led the Arizona Fall League in hitting one year and had the second-highest average ever in that league when he left it.”

Providence rips 14 hits in victory over JCA

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – The Joliet Catholic bus pulled into the Providence parking lot Monday 20 minutes before the schools’ 4:30 p.m. softball game.

“Got stuck in traffic,” a JCA player shouted to a fan as the Angels got off the bus, grabbed their equipment and hurried to the field.

Five innings later, JCA was headed back home. Providence scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second, three in the third and two more in the fifth for an 11-1 East Suburban Catholic Conference win.

Providence pitcher Kendal Judge had eight strikeouts in the first three innings and finished with 10.

“I was just working on hitting my spots, making the ball

move, doing the best I can to get outs,” Judge said. “I felt pretty confident with all my pitches.”

Meanwhile, the Celtics (138, 12-3) strung together a 14-hit attack for their junior pitcher.

“It makes me feel a lot better going out there, knowing that my team has my back, hitting the ball and getting the runs in,” Judge said.

Third baseman Morgan Greenwood, Providence’s cleanup hitter, was 3 for 3 with a run and two RBIs. Second baseman Jessica Miklos was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, including a solo home run in the fifth.

The winning run came home on an RBI single by Zoe Bruni. Jessica Cothern (2 for 3, two runs, three RBIs) drew a walk after Miklos’ homer.

Greenwood then singled before Bruni delivered the gameender.

“We’ve kind of been a little inconsistent at the plate this year. Saturday, we had a good day at the plate, now again today. We’re hoping with the warm weather maybe the bats will stay hot.”

Miklos and Greenwood both hit RBI doubles to the fence in the first inning. Cothern had a two-run single in the second, followed by run-scoring base hits by Bruni and Maeve Garvey.

The Angels had a short bench with three players at a junior varsity game and one sidelined because of an injury.

“Once we settled down a little bit, we started making some plays,” JCA coach Dave Douglas said. “Our infield made a couple diving plays. We’re just trying to keep working on getting better defensively every game.”

Greenwood sees good things ahead for Providence, which has a rematch Wednesday at Joliet Catholic.

“I think we’re looking great,” she said. “We lost some seniors, and we have some new girls, but I have a really good feeling about this team.”

JCA bats awake from slumber against Marist

“I made it hurt, and the guys behind me made it hurt,” the Joliet Catholic leadoff hitter said.

Boe laced the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first inning for a triple to deep right-center field. Just like that, the Hilltoppers escaped the offensive woes that had plagued them the last couple weeks as they went on to beat East Suburban Catholic Conference foe Marist, 10-3, Monday afternoon at Gillespie Field.

“Before the game, I was saying how we haven’t been scoring any runs, and then we have this game,” JCA coach Jared Voss said with a smile.

Triggered by Boe’s blast, the Hilltoppers (16-6-1, 6-3) got 14 hits, six for extra bases. KC Simonich and Nick Dalesandro both doubled, tripled and

drove in three runs, and Connor Bandon doubled. Simonich and Brandon had three hits, and Boe and Dalesandro two as the 1-4 hitters in Voss’ lineup combined for 10 hits and 19 total bases.

“It’s great to see the bats come alive again,” said Boe, who also walked, was hit by a pitch and scored four runs.

“This is a good time to do it.”

“We’ve been working hard to break out of it,” Simonich said. “It’s a matter of hitting line drives up the middle and the opposite way.”

Teased about falling a home run shy of the cycle, Simonich said, “That’s OK, I still got a chicken basket from coach Jaworski [JCA pitching coach Jake Jaworski] for the three hits.”

All the offense made life more comfortable for junior right-hander Drake Fellows, who went the distance. He allowed nine hits, five in the fourth inning when Marist (157, 5-4) scored its three runs to slice its deficit to 5-3.

“It’s good to see this, especially since we’ve been scuffling for two weeks.

We swung the bats up and down the lineup a lot better.”

Fellows struck out the side in the sixth inning and the first two batters in the seventh to finish with nine strikeouts to go with one walk. He threw 102 pitches.

“You could see Drake getting stronger late in the game,” Voss said. “He didn’t let the wheels fall off when he had that rough inning.”

“I didn’t have my best stuff, and they had that one inning,” Fellows said. “I was behind on the count some and was leaving the ball over the plate, but as long as we get the job done, that’s all that matters.”

Dalesandro, JCA’s catcher, said Fellows had a good day.

“It looks like a bad outing only because it’s Drake,” Dalesandro said. “Everybody expects him to dominate. If it’s anybody else, this was a good outing. He pitched well as he always does. He was just leaving some balls up in the zone.”

Marist, which is coached by former major leaguer Kevin Sefcik, started left-handed curveball pitcher Ryan Kairis, and the Hilltoppers were on him from the get-go.

After Boe’s first-inning triple, Simonich doubled him home and scored on an error for a 2-0 JCA lead. The Hilltoppers added three runs in the second on Max Brzostowski’s bunt single, a walk to Boe, Dalesandro’s two-run double

to the fence in left and Simonich’s run-scoring single.

After the RedHawks got back into it with their threerun fourth, Dalesandro tripled to deep right-center to drive in Boe in the bottom of the inning. Brandon’s double, Alex Ragusa’s bunt single, Mike Quiram’s RBI single and Keegan Tyrell’s sacrifice fly made it 8-3 in the fifth.

The Hilltoppers closed the scoring in the sixth when Simonich tripled in Boe and Brandon followed with a single.

“A couple of us, including me, have been working on taking the ball the other way,” Dalesandro said. “We needed to get our swings back.”

“It’s good to see this, especially since we’ve been scuffling for two weeks,” Voss said. “We swung the bats up and down the lineup a lot better. We got a lot of hits, and even some of our outs were on hard-hit balls.”

The two-game series concludes Wednesday at Marist.

Marchildon and Stennis both ran a leg of the winning and NCAA provisional 4x400 relay with Zoe Mead and Amy Polhemus. Mead also captured won the 800 with an NCAA provisional and personal-best 2:12.23.

Give Pace, Bears a B+ for effort BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush It often is reported that Vince Lombardi instructed all of his players upon arriving in the end zone they should “act like they’d been there before.”

That exactly is what Bears rookie general manager Ryan Pace did this weekend overseeing his first NFL college draft.

Asked what it was like in his own war room for the first time, Pace said, “It has been really smooth.” He went on to say, “It’s been really calm. It’s good to sit next to John (Fox) and bounce ideas off of him and talk things through.”

The results suggest Pace ran this draft like a crusty old vet. There were no rookie gaffes, blockbuster moves, missed deadlines or stunning picks.

What became clear about Pace’s drafting philosophy is the value he places on character.

“It was something that was stressed.

Me and John (Fox) always talk about smart, intelligent, tough players, and that was stressed. That wasn’t just happenstance, that was done purposefully.”

Here’s something else we learned about Pace’s draft principles: “One thing we talk about, a lot of times, players that have fought through adversity in their life, I think that means something,” Pace said. “We just hired Jen Gipson as our sports science coordinator and she came over from the Olympics in Colorado Springs. It is interesting to note that among the Bears’ six draft choices, first-rounder Kevin White is the only one who reported significant contact with the team before the draft.

The others all seemed pleased to be Bears – Hroniss Grasu called it “his dream come true” – but indicated they didn’t really see it coming.

Should one or more fail going forward, that is likely to be a hot topic of conversation.

I have no reason to doubt Pace’s and his troops’ exhaustive preparation and scouting, but it does seem difficult to judge a young man’s character without significant one-on-one contact.

Assuming a normal allotment of picks and undrafted rookie free agents, the goal of every draft should be to find three or four players who are eventual starters and two or three more who can be significant contributors to your ballclub.

Ideally, if one or two of those starters has Pro Bowl potential, you’ve done

well. It will be at least a couple, maybe three, years from now before we know how well Pace actually did in his first major league at-bat, but the early returns are promising.

The overwhelming consensus among NFL insiders and analysts is both White and second-round choice Eddie Goldman have star qualities. We know Pace thinks so.

There’s not enough evidence to project third-round choice Grasu as a future star, but he certainly could be that 10-year starter you’re looking for.

“When you talk about work ethic, team captain, leadership, all those traits that we stress around here, he brings those to the table,” Pace said.

Fourth-rounder Jeremy Langford is the most interesting of the six picks because he doesn’t project as a starter today, but he has almost as much upside as the first three.

The Bears last two picks, Adrian Amos and Tayo Fabuluje, and their group of free agents are much harder to project, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find two or three more players in the group who can be solid backups and special teams contributors.

As for the success of the grand “Draft Town Chicago” experiment, I’ll leave that evaluation to the 200,000 or so of you who visited Grant Park.

My focus is on just how many Pro Bowls we can expect from White and Goldman, and my eyes and my gut tell me there could be a few.

Koerner, Hoffman win late-model features STAFF REPORT MORRIS – Scott Koerner of Joliet won the makeup of the rained-out feature from April 24 and Eddie Hoffman captured the regularly scheduled feature to highlight Friday night’s stock car racing program at Grundy County Speedway.

Koerner went past DJ Weltmeyer late in the race and beat Larry Schuler to the finish line. John Nutley was third, Weltmeyer fourth and Billy Knippenberg fifth. The rest of the top 10 consisted of Jeremy Spoonmore, Hoffman, Brandon Clubb, James

Gregait and Dave Gentile.

Hoffman took his feature win ahead of Schuler, Gentile, Knippenberg and Nutley. Rounding out the top 10 were Chris Cooling, David Einhaus, Spoonmore, Koerner and Gregait. Weltmeyer set the fast time.

By TOM WITHERS The Associated Press CLEVELAND – The Bulls came in oozing with confidence, unafraid of LeBron James and convinced they could keep their playoff momentum rolling.

Derrick Rose made sure they did.

Looking like the league MVP he was before being slowed by knee injuries, Rose scored 25 points, Pau Gasol added 21, and the Bulls led from the start in a 99-92 victory Monday night over the short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Rose, who suffered a shoulder stinger in the closing minute, helped the Bulls swipe home-court advantage from the Cavs. Cleveland was missing starters Kevin Love and J.R. Smith, but its bigger issue was not stopping Rose or his pick-and-roll plays with Gasol.

After all he’s been through – surgeries, hours of rehab, uncertainty about his future – Rose, who has missed more than 180 games the past four seasons, is savoring every moment back in the postseason.

“I just appreciate everything,” he said, “getting back on the floor and just every aspect of basketball. It’s allowed me to change my life and my family’s life. I owe so much to this sport. I’m just trying to roll with it.”

Jimmy Butler added 20 points and banked in a contested jumper with 30 seconds left as the Bulls closed it out, silencing a roaring Cleveland crowd already worried about Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Kyrie Irving scored 30 points and James added 19 and 15 rebounds for Cleveland, playing its first game since Love – one of the Cavs’ Big 3 – was lost for the remainder of the postseason with a shoulder injury.

“No excuses,” Cavs coach David Blatt said.

James didn’t offer any.

“We all just have to play better,” said James, who had nine assists but six turnovers.

“I wasn’t that good tonight.”

Rose ran the show the way he used to; and Gasol, the steady 34-year-old Spaniard, made the Cavs pay for leaving him open by knocking down one mid-range jumper after another.

“They made their runs, but we kept our poise,” Gasol said.

“We came in with the right mind set and attitude. We went after it.”

Rose banged shoulders with Cleveland’s Tristan Thompson and felt his arm go numb. He said the feeling came back a few minutes later, and he’s not concerned about it lingering.

The Cavs struggled from the start to find any offensive rhythm. Without Love to space the floor, the Bulls had an easier time defending James and without Smith, who was suspended two games for striking Boston’s Jae Crowder in the face, the Cavs were lacking one of their best perimeter shooters.

Iman Shumpert made four 3-pointers and scored 22 points, but Blatt spent the night unsuccessfully searching for the right combinations.

The Bulls have a healthy Rose, and that might be enough.

“Derrick was making the right plays every time,” Butler said.

After the Cavs battled back from a 16-point deficit to tie it 51-all, the Bulls went on a 15-0 run highlighted by Rose’s jumper that was a snapshot of him before his knee injuries.

With James guarding him on the perimeter, Rose created some space with a dribble and then hit a step-back, off-balance 3 to give the Bulls a 61-53 lead. The Bulls weren’t done as Butler scored on a dunk, Gasol converted a three-point play and then knocked down another short jumper.

It was a nice start for the Bulls, but as Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau was quick to point out, only that.

“You can’t get wrapped up in it,” he said. “We’re going to have to play a lot better in the next game.”

LEBRON’S BUSY NIGHT

James was forced to do a lot on defense as Blatt switched him on Rose, Gasol, Joakim Noah and others.

“I think I guarded every guy they brought into the game,” he said.

NOAH, NO POINTS

Noah didn’t score in 29 minutes, but he had nine rebounds and drew boos from Cleveland’s crowd every time he touched the ball.

By SEAN LEARY Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Dozens of people who have experienced a brush with death from a mysterious ailment have turned to the Internet seeking answers.

The social web they’ve woven online could lead to a cure for the disease that nearly struck them down. Cheryl Crisman of Morris, director of recreation for the Plainfield Park District, is one of those persons.

Five years ago, Crisman experienced spontaneous coronary artery dissection – SCAD. Since then, she’s helped lead a brigade of survivors – and family of those who weren’t so fortunate – in raising money through various events.

“When I first was recovering from this, I was kind of lost, kind of disoriented by it,” Crisman said. “I spent two years as an anomaly, feeling I was lucky but asking myself, ‘Why was I so lucky, why am I still here? Why is it that so many other people have died from this but I didn’t?’”

Crisman’s introduction to SCAD began Super Bowl Sunday 2008.

“It was the first thing in the morning, and I woke up feeling terrible, like I had the flu,” Crisman said. “I hadn’t felt good the previous two days either. I had chills and just didn’t feel right.”

Forget the Super Bowl party, Crisman decided. Instead, she went to the hospital, leaving her husband and 6-yearold and 4-month-old children at home. When Crisman described her symptoms, she immediately was hooked up to an EKG and given a nitroglycerine tablet to hold under her tongue.

Crisman was shocked the nurse thought she might be having a heart attack.

Crisman called her husband. He found someone to watch the kids and came to the hospital, Crisman said.

“I don’t remember much else after that,” Crisman said.

Subsequent testing determined Crisman’s arteries had corroded. A flap in her heart had fallen, cutting off blood flow. The doctors had to put a pump into her to keep the blood flowing.

“I was really lucky,” Crisman said. “One of the doctors there just happened to have had experience with SCAD, and he knew the symptoms and knew what to do. If he hadn’t been there, I don’t know what would have happened. I’m just fortunate he was.”

Crisman went online to research SCAD and find survivors. It was a long search.

“After two years, I finally found two other women who had been survivors,” Crisman said. “Then I happened across a few other people who had survived, and then a few more, and eventually we started up a website to begin posting our stories.”

That led them to contact the Mayo Clinic, to offer their stories and their experiences for research. Mayo’s response, Crisman said, was if enough people could be found, a pilot study on SCAD could be done.

So they set up a Facebook page. Initially, it attracted 50 followers; now it’s 850, Crisman said.

“There are over 500 people involved in the Mayo research because of it,” Crisman said.

A May 2 5K run/walk in Naperville raised awareness and money for research, Crisman said. Donors come from

around the world – survivors, as well as individuals that have lost loved ones to SCAD. “Last year, SCAD research presented a check to Mayo for over $100,000 due to events like this and donations,” Crisman said.

One such person is Bob Alico, the head of SCAD Research, whose wife Judy died from SCAD in 2011 at age 51. A graphic artist, Judy was working at the computer early one morning when she suddenly didn’t feel well and had pain in her right arm.

Alico called the paramedics. At the emergency department, all tests appeared fine.

Suddenly, Alico said, the cardiologist shouted, “Get her up to the operating room quick!”

“That was the last time I saw her,” Alico said.

According to Alico, recent research has shown SCAD occurs far more often in women – especially women who recently have given birth – and

Although just four years old, Alico’s nonprofit has donated $135,000 to SCAD research. Results such as this have given meaning to Crisman’s experience, she believes.

“There has been so much more research and awareness over the past few years, and I’m honored to have been a part of that,” Crisman said.

“It’s a pretty big step.”

NAPERVILLE – The second annual Brandon Marshall Mental Health Awareness Ride will be held May 16. Project 375 (formerly the Brandon Marshall Foundation), Starved Rock Harley-Davidson and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health are sponsoring the event.

All makes and models of motorcycles are welcome. Proceeds will go to Project 375, which is devoted to raising awareness of mental health issues and connecting those who need treatment to resources and care.

Marshall, an NFL wide receiver formerly with the Bears and now with the New York Jets, was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in 2010.

non-joggers. Light joggers were those who jogged at a slow or moderate pace just two or three times a week, for 60 to 145 minutes. Not surprisingly, the light joggers had much lower death rates than the non-joggers. But surprisingly, the light joggers also had somewhat lower death rates than the regular joggers.

I’m not sure I believe that last result, given what so many other studies have said about the benefits of regular jogging. But I do absolutely believe that regular light exercise brings more health benefits than being sedentary. And the exercise doesn’t need to be jogging.

In other words, exercise is on a spectrum. On one end is no activity; on the other end is 150 minutes or more of exercise per week. In between there is a continuum. You benefit from any level of activity on that continuum.

Here are some suggestions to get more activity into your day: • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

• Park farther away from your office, or get off the bus a stop or two earlier.

• Ask a friend to join you for a walk instead of meeting at the coffee shop.

• Walk around the house while chatting on the phone.

• Walk an extra lap around the mall.

• Walk the dog.

• Hop on your exercise bike or treadmill while watching TV. • Dance with your kids.

Dear Doctor K: You often recommend exercising for 30 minutes a day, most days of the week. That target intimidates me. Is it worth it for me to exercise less, say 15 minutes, three days a week? Or is there no benefit unless I commit to the full 150 minutes per week?

Dear Reader: I’m glad you asked that question, because there are a lot of people who are daunted by the thought of exercising that much – and therefore don’t do it at all.

It is true that I do advise 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week. But two recent studies, while not changing my view that 150 minutes is best, show that less than this still brings benefits.

First, let’s establish what we know: Regular exercise protects you against many major diseases.

That includes heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression and even some cancers. In fact, there are no medicines yet invented that can protect you against these diseases as well as regular exercise.

But how much exercise? Two papers published recently have made me think carefully about whether my emphasis on the 150-minute-a-week goal is right for everyone.

One research team analyzed studies of physical activity in over 800,000 people.

The more time that people were sitting down each day, the greater their risk of heart disease and cancer.

The people who spent the most time sitting down, compared to those who spent the least time, had a 24 percent higher risk of dying prematurely.

And they had a 90 percent greater risk of getting diabetes.

Another research team in Denmark compared death rates in regular joggers, light joggers and
