JOLIET – A man was fatally shot early Sunday on Mississippi Avenue.

Police Chief Brian Benton said shots were reported just after 3 a.m. in the first block of Mississippi Avenue and officers arrived to see four men running from a nearby house.

rected to the alley behind that residence where a man had been shot.”

Dameon D. Anderson, 27, of Joliet was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and pronounced dead in the emergency room at 3:42 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office.

After questioning witnesses, police executed a search warrant Sunday morning.

“There is a person of interest who is being held in custody on an unrelated charge. He is

not one of the people detained at the scene,” Benton said. “The case is being reviewed with the Will County State’s Attorney’s office.”

Benton said investigators believe Anderson was killed as the result of a dispute.

Court records indicate Anderson served two years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated battery in 2010.

That incident occurred while he was on probation for a 2009 conviction of unauthorized possession of a firearm by a felon.

bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – A 4-yearold Romeoville boy was killed in a crash police said was caused by a drunken driver early Sunday.

“Alcohol was a factor in this crash,” State Police Sgt. Scott Angus said. Angus said

charges are pending against the man who was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.

A 2:03 a.m. the man was driving a 2012 Dodge Journey south on Interstate 55 near Interstate 355 when he lost control, Angus said. The vehicle rolled over and Taylor Dyer was ejected. The boy was pronounced

dead at the scene by the Will County Coroner’s office.

Two other children who were in the backseat suffered “critical, but non-life-threatening” injuries, Angus said.

They were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove and later transferred to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

City working to capitalize on Route 66

Proposal could open Joliet Correctional Center for tours

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – While most tourists come to Joliet to get their first “kick” on the Route 66 tour, what many really want is a chance to visit the home of Jake and Elwood Blues.

“They constantly say, ‘We want more on the prisons, we want more on “The Blues Brothers”,’ ” said Mike Brick, development director of the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

And now, if Joliet can come to an agreement with the Illinois Department of Corrections, tourists may finally get that chance.

The city, through the museum, wants to offer tours of Joliet Correctional Center, better known as Joliet Prison.

The prison, on the 1100 block of Collins Street in Joliet, closed in 2002.

The bus and walking tour would begin at the prison’s

west wall sally port, City Manager Jim Hock said. It would be led by former guards of the prison.

Points of interest would include an original single cell dated 1853, the solitary confinement building, guard posts looking upon interior prison cells and an external wall corner guard turret. There would be no access to the interior of any buildings.

Tours would originate at the museum, according to the proposal. Visitors would be bused to the site. Tours would be conducted five afternoons a week between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Hock stressed that the plan is still in the idea stage and the city has not yet approached DOC about it. But those involved are excited about its potential impact.

“Joliet Prison is the No. 1 one thing we get asked about,” said Greg Peerbolte, the museum’s executive director.

The museum would charge about $40 a person for the tour, Peerbolte said. Revenue would be used to pay for mowing, tour guide expenses, bus transportation, insurance, marketing and preservation foundation.

“The Department of the Interior’s most visited site is Alcatraz Prison, with 2 million visitors each year,” Peerbolte said. “Imagine what 10 percent of that number would be like for our prison.”

The city’s initial investment in the project would be relatively minimal: $5,000 for handicap access to the guard area of the cell blocks, $1,000 to repair a roof drainage pipe and some other repairs.

Ultimately, the goal would be to preserve the entire site, including all buildings, according to the proposal. A key concern is repair of the leaking roof over the prison’s main structure, which the city estimates will cost $1.3 mil-

lion.

While tourism revenue will help with the preservation, funding also could come from other sources.

Peerbolte noted that the project likely would qualify for historic preservation grants, especially if it proves popular with tourists.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, last year pushed legislation that would give tax credits to private developers who take over and redevelop state-owned surplus properties such as the old prison.

McGuire said he’s “optimistic yet realistic” about developing the site as a “stabilized ruin” similar to what was done at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia.

Eastern, known as the world’s first penitentiary – a prison designed to inspire penitence or regret – is now a popular historic site open year-round.

JOLIET – The Mother Road is rapidly becoming a mother lode for international tourism in Joliet.

As the roadway’s first major venue outside of Chicago, the Route 66 Welcome Center at the Joliet Area Historical Museum has become a gateway for foreign tourists heading west. So events like the Red Carpet Corridor Festival, held Saturday and Sunday, loom especially large.

“It’s the unofficial launch of the summer season for the Route 66 corridor,” said Mike Brick, development director for the museum.

About 24,000 tourists from 34 foreign countries and 37 states routinely visit the center each year, Brick said. Some come for just the day, but many are beginning extended vacations along the legendary highway, especially the foreign tourists.

Workers in Australia, parts of Europe and other countries get mandated vacations of four or more weeks, so their vacation experience is vastly different from that of most Americans, Brick said.

“They’ll get a month off, rent car and slowly make their way out to the West Coast,” Brick said.

While Route 66 is a uniquely American icon, it seems to attract foreign tourists from many different cultures.

“In one day we had tourists from Great Britain, China, Japan and Australia,” said Greg Peerbolte, the museum’s executive director. “And in peak season, that’s the rule, not the exception.”

Slammers hold open house for all ages Hopefuls try to impress team while kids watch

By JAN LARSEN Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Boys of all ages came to play ball at an open house Sunday at Silver Cross Field.

For Anthony Wright, 6, of Plainfield, it was a chance to throw one in the catcher’s mitt at the Kids Zone.

“I’m a T-ball coach,” said his dad, Brian. “My friend and I saw about the open house on Facebook and decided to bring the kids out,” he said. Anthony, who said he’s a “very good pitcher” and friend Connor Zelinsky of Plainfield were seen playing an imaginary game of ball more than once around the park.

Nick Foushi, 10, of Mokena came with his mom to pick up a Kids Club packet but decided to stay and watch the game.

While mom stayed under the awning, a little rain wasn’t going to deter Nick from trying out the good seats and attempting to catch any foul balls.

With just under two weeks before Opening Day on May 16, Sunday’s game was a contest between the Slammers team and a team of hopefuls

“We told all the [tryout] players, ‘You have to be better than what we have now, not just as good.’ ” Jeff Isom Slammers field manager who traveled to Joliet for open tryouts.

While the team is pretty well set, Slammers Field Manager Jeff Isom said coaches were open to seeing other talent.

“We told all the [tryout] players, ‘You have to be better than what we have now, not just as good,’ ” he said. “We saw a handful of guys who were just as good and we told them they might get a call if a position opens up.”

Right now Isom has 30 players, which he has to whittle down to 24 by Opening Day. Like Nick, Devin DeYoung of St. John, Ind., also has been playing baseball “all my life.”

He had been signed by the Rockford team, but released before he got a chance to go to spring training. It’s been two years since he’s played college

ball, but he still has aspirations. Meanwhile, he teaches baseball and sells furniture.

“I had an eye infection and went blind in one eye,” he said about a recent roadblock. “I went blind … but my eye is fine now.” He said the assistant manager for the Diamondbacks in Arizona told him he needs to play again and he easily heeded that call.

“I’m trying to stay in shape, that’s why I came out today,” he said. Meanwhile, he waits for a phone call from another team.

Barrett Phillips, 23, of South Carolina has played for several league teams since leaving college baseball after one year. On Saturday, he tried out for a team in Normal. Like DeYoung, he’s not ready to give up on his ambitions.

“I will never give up until my arm goes out,” he said.

The chance to play for the Slammers has an expiration date. The team’s website said it would not accept any hopefuls on Sunday who turn age Jan Larsen for Shaw Media 27 this year.

Rock blasting underway in Lemont SHAW MEDIA LEMONT – The construction company responsible for building a new Wet Weather Treatment Facility at Lemont Water Reclamation Plant, 13 Stephen St., expects to continue using explosives to break through bedrock for the next six to eight weeks.

Adam Johnson, a public information officer with the construction company J.J. Henderson, said the blasting started April 16 and will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday

through Friday.

He said the company had planned to start blasting in December but the weather forced them to delay it. The project is on an accelerated timeline in order to meet a mid-2015 deadline, he said.

When the project was announced in December, Johnson said a preblast siren, which should be heard in downtown Lemont, will sound before each blast.

As the blasts go deeper into the bedrock, the sound should lessen, he said.

According to a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District spokesperson, the Wet Weather Treatment Facility will store excess water during storms until it can be treated.

The spokesperson said water from the combined sewer system can exceed the plant’s treatment capacity of 4.5 million gallons per day during storms.

Grundy County offering electronic document services The HERALD–NEWS MORRIS – Grundy County residents can now submit documents electronically to Grundy County Clerk and Recorder Lana Phillips’ office.

The office is partnering with Simplifile, an e-recording service provider, to allow filers to submit their documents online.

When documents are submitted for e-recording, the recorder’s office can review, record and return the electronic

document to the customer within minutes, according to a news release from the Grundy County Clerk and Recorder’s Office.

E-recording will save on check writing expenses, payment errors and rejected documents, as customers are able to more accurately prepare documents before submission, according to the news release.

The e-service is no additional cost to the county for using Simplifile or current technology vendor.

Guire said. DOC currently provides security patrols and mowing on the site. DOC could retain ownership or the property could be sold or transferred through legislation to another government

While no one was sure how long it would take to reach an agreement with DOC, Peerbolte said he was hopeful that tours could begin by August.

Places such as Joliet – with a rich “history and heritage” of prisons, the Illinois & Michigan Canal and turn-of-thecentury architecture – really resonate with foreign tourists, Peerbolte noted.

“It’s not Disney World, it’s not dressed up or artificial,” Peerbolte said. “It truly is authentic America.”

But while history draws foreign tourists, it’s entertainment that drives American tourists, according to Bob Navarro, president of the Heritage Corridor Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Domestically, we draw from a 75-mile radius,” Navarro said. “Tourists come for the casinos, the speedways, shopping and entertainment.”

creasingly like to visit places featured in films and on television, Navarro said. For instance, the Joliet Correctional Center and Old Joliet Prison Interpretive Park on Collins Street is popular with fans of “The Blues Brothers” and “Prison Break.”

And in June, the Joliet Public Library’s annual “Star Wars Days” has grown to become the second-largest costumed event of its kind in the country, Navarro said.

The Illinois & Michigan Canal is another draw, especially for recreational tourists seeking a place to hike, bike, fish or bird watch, Navarro said.

For businesses like the Joliet Route 66 Diner, 22 Clinton St., the burgeoning tourist trade has become increasingly important.

Valentina and John Georgouses re-branded the former Joliet Restaurant with the new moniker a couple of years ago. Since then, an increasing number of tourists have begun coming to what was once a strictly local eatery.

“For us, it’s working because we are between the museum and the Rialto [Square Theatre],” Valentina Georgouses said. The couple capitalize on the tourist trade by offering souvenirs, a guest book and menu specials, such as kids meals for the “Star Wars” event, she said.

Artspace is potentially another way to breath new life into the city.

“I’m trying to cover all our bases so that we do everything we can to turn the downtown around,” he said.

Artspace runs a network of 35 affordable arts facilities in 13 states, according to its website. The organization represents a $500 million investment in arts infrastructure nationwide, and provides more than 1,100 affordable living and working units for artists and their families.

The organization has several properties in the Chicago area, including Elgin, which Streit and Linehan visited.

Streit said there was a warehouse that was falling apart in Elgin that Artspace staff managed to revamp.

“It has all these artists lofts that are there and it had a lot of fun energy to it,” he said.

The consultation from Artspace was funded by a grant from the Daniel K. Thorne Intervention Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, city officials said.

LOCKPORT – Officials in Lockport want to see if the city can embrace its creative side.

On Tuesday, residents – including those with an artistic temperament – are invited to join them when they meet with consultants from Artspace, a Minnesota-based nonprofit organization that develops arts facilities in communities.

The consultants will lead a roundtable discussion from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Public Landing Restaurant.

The discussion will be on what areas of Lockport can be renovated to make it more friendly to the arts. Jack Linehan, the city’s administrative intern, said the organization is good at finding local artists in the community, as well as what could be the “art capital” of the city.

“It’ll be interesting to see what they find and they’ll produce a report in the end – a kind of art plan for the city,” he said.

Artspace consultants will perform a feasibility assessment of the city’s ability to sustain an arts community in the downtown area. They will visit the city’s Illinois State Art Museum and Flower of Life Art Gallery and explore areas for art-related ventures such as the vacant lot on State Street.

MORRIS – Maria’s waitress Dani Tatum was stunned the night of April 25 when she picked up the check from the young couple sitting in one of her booths.

On their $42 bill, the couple tipped Tatum $100, making it the most generous tip she had ever received in her two years of waiting tables.

“My mouth just dropped,” Tatum said last week. “I imagined there was a hidden camera somewhere in the restaurant.”

At the top of the receipt, the anonymous tippers wrote “Pay it Forward in Memory of Michael Collins” and included the Twitter hashtag #MCStrong at the bottom. The couple who gave the tip left before Tatum could thank them and find out more.

“I’d heard of the whole pay it forward idea, in general, but I had no idea who Michael Collins was,” she said.

After looking online, Marilyn Yuhas, the manager of Maria’s Restaurant in Morris, found that Collins was an Illinois State University student who died in early April in a car accident.

“I knew this was something special,” Yuhas said.

On March 29, the car Collins and three other passengers were riding in was struck by a vehicle that ran a red light. Three days later, Collins was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained during the accident.

The driver who ran the light is facing a drunken driving charge.

Shortly after Collins’ death, longtime friend Hailey Lanier created a Facebook page titled Pay it Forward for Michael Collins, in which she asked anyone who knew Collins to perform one act of kindness in his memory.

“Being an organ donor, Michael was able to help over 200 people by giving them the life-saving organs that they need,” wrote Lanier on the Facebook page. “I want to honor Michael and his giving nature by sharing and conducting random acts of kindness in his name.”

“I was actually debating on whether I should come to work on Friday because we had so much going on,” she said. “Now I’m glad I came.”

Tatum will be paying it forward in memory of Michael by doing a random act of kindness, but said she hasn’t decided what that will be.

“I’ve thought about leaving $40 on a gas pump for the next person who drives up,” she said. “I’m not sure. I want it to be special.”

Wendell ‘Van’ Krnac lived a faithful, simple life

JOLIET – When Randy Krnac of Plainfield had to move his uncle Wendell “Van” Krnac to an assisted care facility, the attorney handling the title search for Van’s home just shook his head, Randy said.

From the time of the house’s purchase in 1922 until its sale, every single bill had been paid in full and on time.

“He couldn’t believe it,” said Randy, Van’s only direct living relative. “Usually he’d find something not paid, a water bill or an electric bill, but there was absolutely nothing.”

Van’s parents, Joseph and Mary, had “come over on the boat.” Joseph worked for Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway.

In 1922, the couple bought a house on Landau Avenue in Joliet, where Van would live most of his life.

Randy has photographs of Van attending the former Parks School in Joliet. Van graduated from Joliet Central High School, worked for a time at Rayloc in Plainfield and then served in the Korean Conflict, where he was honorably discharged as a corporal.

Van returned home, worked as an electrician for the EJ&E, joined Joliet’s Eastside Athletic Club and played baseball, fished with his friends, faithfully attended Sunday Mass at St. Cyril & Methodius Parish in Joliet and cared for both parents and one sister until they died.

When Randy was growing up, Van (“No one called him Wendell until he got into the retirement homes,” Randy said) was the bachelor uncle who never brought a date to family events – just his famous broccoli casserole – and enjoyed slipping a $20 bill into Randy’s pocket.

“He was a very happy, simple man,” Randy said. “I remember him crying when

his mom and dad died, but other than that, he was a happy-go-lucky guy, never crabby. He was another dad to me. He was my Uncle Van.” But Van also was a clever man. When 19-year-old Randy took out a loan to buy a brandnew 1969 Camaro, his lessthan-polished driving record drove his auto insurance to well past $900, Randy said.

Now Randy, like many teens, he said, had become unfaithful in regular visits to his grandparents, despite his uncle’s requests to do otherwise. Still, Van loaned Randy the insurance money – with the stipulation Randy make monthly payments in person.

“That was his way of getting me to see my grandmother and make her happy,” Randy said.

Born August 23, 1942 in Joliet, he was the son of August Joseph and Virginia (nee Clark) Decman. He was a graduate of the University of St. Francis and a veteran of the United States Navy. He worked for Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, where he worked as a Property Specialist, retiring after 30 years of service.

Stephen was an avid chess player and was a member of the Argonne Chess Team. He also loved fishing and enjoyed nature and the outdoors. He will be remembered for his beautiful artwork and photography.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Beverly J. (nee Yurkovich) Decman of Joliet; two sisters, Margaret "Peggy" (late Donald) James of Oregon and Susan (late Russell) Watkins of San Jose, CA; six nieces; one nephew; and several greatnieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, William Decman.

Loretta is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, John E. She was born on February 1, 1920, in West Milford, WV to Olin and Hattie Mamie (Stickel) Farris.

Evelyn grew up in West Milford, WV and graduated from Unidis High School in West Milford in 1937. She was a member of the Glee Club and was Secretary/Treasurer of her graduating class. Evelyn relocated to Washington DC where she worked for the branch of the United States Army at the Pentagon. She received numerous awards and accreditations during her 30 year career. She retired in 1976.

Evelyn married James Warren George in August, 1965. They were happily married for 31 years until his passing in 1996.

Evelyn enjoyed dancing, especially ballroom, where she won several medals and awards.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, her grandparents Edward Marion Farris and Edith May Post; twin sister Clarice May Farris; siblings John Farris, Pat Browder, Velma Nixon; first spouse Andrew Richard Ratcliff.

Frank proudly served in the United States Army from April 7, 1943 to April 11, 1946 in the 65th Signal Battalion and the 3261st Signal Service Company in England, France, and Germany during World War II. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal. Frank served with the 114th Signal Radio Intelligence Company and also as a Motor Sergeant where he supervised, directed, and assisted in the maintenance of all types of army vehicles. Frank was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cantigny Post VFW 367, Senior Citizens Association, and St. Joseph Society KSKJ Lodge #2. He was employed as a superintendent by the Joliet Ruberoid Company (GAF), retiring in 1984.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time on the river. Family was most important to Frank and he thoroughly cherished time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was proud of his Croatian/Slovenian heritage teaching his children many of the words and songs his parents taught him. He also loved polka music.

Frank will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Illinois schools struggle to soften pension losses

By DAVID MERCER The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN – Concerned about retirements and its ability to recruit new professors, the University of Illinois is working on a plan to make up for what employees will lose after the state’s landmark pension overhaul, but most other state universities say they don’t have the ability to follow suit.

Most say they just don’t have the money to do anything about it.

“Where does this money come from?” asked Matt Bierman, budget director at Western Illinois University, where up to 150 employees are expected to retire, almost 8 percent of the university’s 2,000 staff and faculty. “If we’re going to add another benefit to our employees, which is probably deserved, we still have to find the revenue or cut expenses.”

Illinois lawmakers passed the pension overhaul plan last December to address a $100 billion shortfall in funding state retirement benefits.

Signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn, it cut cost-of-living increases for retirees and capped the amount of earnings that can be applied toward pensions.

The changes take effect in June, but the plan is being challenged in court. That includes a motion filed Friday in Sangamon County by a group that represents university employees and retirees asking that the law be entirely set aside until its constitutionality has been determined.

But many employees of public universities already have decided to retire to avoid losing pension benefits under a new way of calculating them due to the overhaul – or are considering it.

In April, state universities identified an additional problem – an unintended glitch with a date in the law that could further reduce pension payouts for several thousand university employees. Lawmakers last week filed legislation to fix that problem, but there is no guarantee it will happen.

The State University Employees Retirement System says more than 400 employees at the University of Illinois campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield have filed paperwork to retire in May and June. And many more are possible.

Details of the U of I plan to cushion employees’ losses have yet to be decided, but many administrators assume it will happen. They hope it will keep as many current faculty members around as possible and keep the university on par in recruiting with schools like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

But some wonder where the money will come from.

“Is it going to come out of my budget?” asked David Cahill, head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He then ventured a guess that the school’s steadiest source of revenue – tuition – might ultimately be at least part of the source.

are from registered voters.

The full Board of Elections will eventually consider the validity of the proposed amendments.

“We’re trying to break this process down into manageable bundles,” Borgsmiller said, adding that he hopes they learn what was done properly and what was not.

A graduate of St. Louis University Dental School with a Doctor of Dental Science (DDS) Class of 1970, Northern Illinois University with a Masters Degree in chemistry, the University of Illinois with a Bachelors of Science Degree, and Joliet Township High School Class of 1962. A Captain in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam, he was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas in the dental service. Following his service to his country, he started his dental practice, retiring this year after 43 years of service to his community.

He loved going to work, he loved the people he worked with and especially loved his patients, who trusted him to take care of their health. Member of the Will County Dental Society Review Board, where he served as Chairman for many years. A long time member of the Joliet Country Club. His favorite passions were classic cars, playing golf and playing cards.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A platform collapsed during an aerial hair-hanging stunt at a circus performance Sunday, sending eight acrobats plummeting to the ground. Nine performers were seriously injured in the fall, including a dancer below, while an unknown number of others suffered less serious injuries.

The accident was reported about 45 minutes into the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus’ 11 a.m. Legends show at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence.

Stephen Payne, a spokesman for Feld Entertainment, the parent company of Ringling Bros., said the accident happened during an act in which eight performers hang “like a human chandelier” using their hair.

He said the metal-frame apparatus from which the performers were hanging came free from the metal truss it was connected to. The eight women fell 25 to 40 feet, landing on a dancer on the ground.

Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare said officials and inspectors haven’t yet determined what caused the accident. He said none of the injuries appears to be life-threatening.

ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan met with security, school and state officials and ordered that “everything must be done” to free the 276 girls held captive

by Islamic extremists, one of his advisers said Sunday amid growing national outrage at the government’s response to the abduction.

Jonathan said in a televised “media chat” Sunday night that he believes Nigeria is winning its war against an Islamic uprising.

Two bomb blasts in three weeks that have killed about 100 people and injured more than 200 in the capital, Abuja, “does not mean the situation is worsening,” Jonathan said.

“I believe we are succeeding,” he said, though the death tolls tell a different story.

More than 1,500 people have died in the insurgency this year, compared to an estimated 3,600 between 2010 and 2013.

Both of the Abuja blasts are blamed on Boko Haram, the Islamic terrorist network.

Jonathan said he has been asking for and getting help from the United States.

U.S. teachers nowhere as diverse as their students WASHINGTON – U.S. teachers are nowhere near as diverse as their students.

Almost half the students attending public schools are minorities, yet fewer than 1 in 5 of their teachers is nonwhite.

New studies from the Center for American Progress and the National Education Association are calling attention to this “diversity gap” at elementary and secondary schools in the United States. The groups want more to be done to help teachers more accurately mirror the students in their classrooms.

Teachers are always pushing their students to excel, said Kevin Gilbert, coordinator of teacher leadership and special projects for the Clinton Public School District in Clinton, Mississippi.

It becomes easier for students to believe “when they can look and see someone who looks just like them, that they can relate to,” said Gilbert, a member of the NEA’s executive committee. “Nothing can help motivate our students more than to see success standing right in front of them.”

More than minority students would benefit from a more diverse teacher corps, said Ulrich Boser, the author of the center’s report.

“Even in a place like North Dakota, where the students aren’t particularly diverse relative to the rest of the country, it’s important for our social fabric, for our sense as a nation, that students are engaging with people who think, talk and act differently than them but can also be just as effective at raising student achievement in the classroom,” he said.

There were about 3.3 million teachers in American public elementary and secondary schools in 2012, according to a study by the National Center for Education Statistics. It said 82 percent were white, 8 percent were Hispanic, 7 percent were black and about 2 percent were Asian.

Students are a different story. In 1993, minority students made up 31 percent of the public school population; it was 41 percent in 2003.

Progress’ most recent statistics show 48 percent of the students in public schools are nonwhite – 23 percent Hispanic, 16 percent black and 5 percent Asian – and that percentage is expected to continue to increase.

“We project that this fall, for the first time in American history, the majority of public school students in America will be nonwhite,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan said last week.

blacks as the largest minority group of teachers, just as there are more Hispanic students than African-Americans in the public school system. This tracks with the increases in the number of Hispanics in the United States, with Latinos the largest minority group in the country and the fastest-growing.

Racist eruptions reveal that prejudice lives still This country has come a long way on race. The law no longer tolerates discrimination and most institutions, public and private, have accepted diversity as the new normal.

But all too often somebody stuns the nation by saying something so appallingly racist that it reveals just how far we still have to go.

Donald Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers professional basketball team, is the latest example. Recordings of racist ravings from a man believed to be him in a conversation with his girlfriend were recently revealed.

He was upset that she posted a benign picture of herself with basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson and another woman on

her Instagram account.

“Don’t put him on Instagram for all the world to see,” Sterling is reported to have said. “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people.” He told her not to bring black people to his games.

Then there’s Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher whose anti-government diatribes over grazing rights on federal land garnered 15 minutes of fame that became infamy when he said of black people, “I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton?”

Before that, it was celebrity chef Paula Deen. A former employee alleged Deen said she wanted a “true Southern plan-

tation-style wedding” for her brother. Using a pejorative for blacks, she said she wanted a bunch of little ones in long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties.

“You know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around,” Deen said, according to a lawsuit dismissed last year after she had admitted having used racial slurs.

Those bigoted comments, and the mindset they expose, are raw proof of just how stubborn prejudice can be. The nation is becoming more multiracial by the day. And with so many people embracing that reality, there’s hope that eruptions of such bigotry soon will fade away.

Joliet West keeps pressure on opposition VIEWS Dick Goss The Joliet West softball team got off to an 0-4 start.

Nothing like an 18-game winning streak to make everyone in Tiger Nation feel a whole lot better.

The long run ended Thursday when West fell to SouthWest Suburban Blue foe Sandburg, 8-7. I had the opportunity to see the Tigers the previous afternoon, when they beat Joliet Central, 11-2 for No. 18.

“If and when the day comes that the streak ends, our mindset will be, ‘Let’s start another streak,’ ” senior catcher Julia Liceaga said after the Central game. “We’ll just want to do better the next game.”

Junior second baseman Jennifer Ames, who led off the bottom of the first against Central with a home run, the second time this season she accomplished that feat, said, “The streak is great now, but the time we want to be undefeated is the end of the year. If we can have a winning streak of about seven or eight games [in the postseason], that would be perfect.”

Liceaga, pitcher/first baseman Joy Treasure and center fielder Karina Vargas are the only seniors on the West roster. Freshmen Madi Mulder, Kristen Ames and Kiley Robb are regulars, and their classmate, DeShonte Smith, is a top reserve.

The junior class features Jennifer Ames, shortstop and strong hitter Alysia Rodriguez, plus outfielders Lorelei Tokarczyk and Lily Ongkiko.

Sophomore utility player Ariana Liceaga rounds out the roster.

Despite their relative youth, the Tigers have scored runs against virtually everyone.

“Our offense has been on every game,” Treasure said.

“When we get up to the plate, we adjust to slow and fast movement of the pitches. We see what the opposing pitcher is doing and we communicate it to each other.”

“Our offense has been hitting well and we’re running the bases well,” she said. “The girls are to the point now where they are taking extra bases on their own. We coaches don’t need to say anything.

They’re doing a good job.”

The pressure always is on the opposition to curtail West’s aggressiveness on the bases. If they fail, the Tigers make them pay.

On the flip side, a defensive-minded catcher such as Liceaga, who will play collegiately at Murray State, discourages the opposition’s running game and is a godsend for the Tigers’ pitchers, Treasure and Robb.

“Julia behind the plate is a huge help,” Suca said. “She helps the pitchers especially.

She has the full package. Her arm gets stronger every game.

She knows which pitcher can do what, which pitch to throw

in a given situation, when to try to pick a runner off base, everything a catcher needs to do.

“She is a huge leader. All three of our seniors have been good in that regard.”

“Our two pitchers are fun to catch,” Liceaga said. “They complement each other well, and our defense helps out a lot, too.”

Longtime West assistant coach Jim “Bones” Brumund passed away shortly before the season. A plaque in his memory recently was attached to the side of the press box at the West softball field.

“Not having Jim here, his passing has brought us together more than we ever were,” Liceaga said. “He deserves a lot of credit for the success we’re having.”

With the way the Tigers are hitting the ball and attacking the base paths, and with the job Treasure and Robb are doing in the circle, rest assured Bones is smiling as he looks down on this team.

Pro baseball notes • Cincinnati Reds left-handed pitcher Tony Cingrani (Lincoln-Way Central) went on the disabled list with mild shoulder tendinitis after lasting four innings in last Wednesday’s start against the Cubs. He allowed three runs on six hits and his velocity decreased noticeably toward the end of that outing.

In six starts, Cingrani is 2-2 with a 3.34 ERA. His record streak of not allowing more than five hits in any start ended in a start before the outing

against the Cubs.

• The Yankees recently sent utility infielder Dean Anna (Lincoln-Way East) to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In his first taste of the major leagues early this season, he started a few games, drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the winning run in an extra-inning game, hit his first home run and pitched an inning in a blowout.

“I was a little surprised by her early decision, but I knew that she was heavily into the process of looking at and visiting schools to see what her options were,” Litwiller said. “I personally have not had an underclassman receive this sort of attention from these types

of programs. I can’t say for the coaches before me. It says a lot about her as a student, player and person.”

Although Korte had no idea she would arrive at such a decision when she visited Illinois, finding a fit quickly was a priority from the beginning of her search.

“I definitely knew that

it was one of my goals to be committed early,” Korte said.

“That’s a big accomplishment and a big weight off my chest.

Other sophomores don’t have an opportunity like I do. So it definitely was in my mind when I visited the U of I.” Korte’s older sister, Kendall, is a freshman and a volleyball player at Division II Land-

Kaylin Korte was just finishing up her age 13 season with the UNO Volleyball Club when she first heard from a collegiate volleyball program.

Within a year or two, Korte said she was getting 10 to 12 letters a week from colleges wanting her to join their volleyball programs. She heard from Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Florida State, Georgia and Oregon, among many others. Coaches were in attendance at virtually every club tournament in which she played. “[Being recruited heavily is] a big accomplishment, especially since I was so young as it was happening, and so I would try to take it all in” Korte said. “It definitely felt good. Who wouldn’t want it at that age? But then it was also very stressful.”

Still only a sophomore at Morris, Korte already has put an end to the recruiting process. She verbally committed to the University of Illinois and its volleyball team March 3.

A February visit to the Champaign-Urbana campus sealed the deal.

Before then, Korte always had seen herself going far away to college.

She also said Illinois did not have a particularly special place in her heart until her visit.

“It wasn’t like it was my life’s goal to go there,” Korte said. “They scouted me at a tournament and talked to me in person. Everything about it all fit what I was looking for.

I had visited Loyola before, and there was no comparing it to Loyola. I mean, Loyola is a beautiful school, but I saw myself somewhere bigger.”

A number of prominent Division I schools, including Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State and Northwestern, showed at least some interest in Korte before she committed, she said.

Morris coach Jackie Litwiller said Korte definitely will be the first player in her five-year tenure, and the first Morris player she knows of, to

Although Kendall’s college selection process was much different from Kaylin’s – Kendall was late to commit – the older sister did give some advice to the younger. “[Kendall] definitely told me, or I learned from her, to ask questions. It sounds really cliché to say that, but you have to ask so many questions to make sure that it’s for you,” Kaylin said. “She would tell me, ‘Once you find that one college, you will automatically know that it’s for you.’ ” Litwiller has high hopes for the 2014 Redskins, and Korte figures to be front and center in what they do. She led them in kills during a 19-win season in 2013.

“Kaylin is the type of player that plays all out all of the time, she loves the competition. A true competitor which I am hopeful will continue to grow and develop as she continues on,” Litwiller said.”

“I would like to see her at the top of the [Northern Illinois Big 12 East] conference when it comes to her hitting percentage as well as defensively. I want to see her continuing to work on her vertical and her strength. Her court awareness is already very good, but if she can continue to work on seeing and anticipating what the other team is doing, she will be unstoppable.

She also has been working on different serving options that will add another element to her game, which is an overall asset to any program.”

Korte said committing early will not change her approach to the game, nor will it lessen the pressure she feels to perform well.

In fact, she has specific improvements she hopes to make before she joins the Illini.

“I need to work on reading where I need to hit. That’s huge when you get to against top competition, where there are so many taller players and opponents,” Korte said. “I need to work on placing my hips better, and also my defense, the same thing – you need to read where the place you need to be is in the back row.”

VIEWS Tom Musick CHICAGO – Here’s what I found in the Minnesota Wild locker room after the Blackhawks’ resounding 4-1 win Sunday at the United Center.

Two large trash bins filled mostly with empty paper cups featuring Gatorade logos. Two oscillating fans, not in use. What seemed to be miles of discarded hockey tape. A half-empty jar of Pedialyte. A white dry-erase board that someone had wiped clean.

“Twenty-five after,” a team official barked as a few players lingered at their lockers. “Twenty-five after, on the bus.”

It wasn’t exactly an uplifting scene.

Don’t feel too badly, Minnesota. This is how the Hawks treat most of their guests.

The Hawks’ bus continues to gather speed after six consecutive playoff wins, including four against the St. Louis Blues and two against the Wild. They’ll take a 2-0 series lead to Minnesota on Tuesday for Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals, and it’s not crazy to think that they could complete the sweep Friday.

Nobody knows for sure whether brooms will be needed, of course. Hockey is the most random major sport we have – that’s not an insult, merely an observation – and one measly bounce can turn around a game and a series.

In the third period Sunday, the Wild flirted with that game-changing bounce.

Then, Hawks goaltender Corey Crawford squished their hopes with his fly swatter.

Fine, so it wasn’t a fly swatter. It was a goaltenders stick, and Crawford used it like a baseball bat to swat a puck out of mid air as it tumbled toward the net. His acrobatic save prevented what would have been a game-tying goal by the Wild to make it 2-2.

Instead, the Hawks scored twice in the final three minutes to seal a 4-1 win.

Wild forward Charlie Coyle had a front-row seat for the highlight-reel save. After

Crawford swatted the puck, it landed on the top of the net and prompted a whistle.

How close had the Wild come to tying the game and silencing a sellout crowd?

“Inches,” Coyle said, shaking his head. “You know?”

Yes, I know. (Don’t tell Coyle, but that’s why I brought it up.)

“He gets a tip on that,” said Coyle, replaying the sequence in his mind. “If he doesn’t, it could be in the net, and it’s a different game right there. But that’s how it goes. Sometimes, you get bounces. Sometimes, you don’t.”

Again, a reminder: This is how the Hawks treat most of their guests.

The Hawks are so talented on offense, defense and between the pipes that they often leave opponents shaking their heads after games and wondering what just happened. Coach Joel Quenneville’s crew is 5-0 on

home ice during the playoffs, and they share the NHL lead with 29 goals scored during the postseason.

Meanwhile, Crawford continues to be a stalwart in the net.

Off of the ice, Crawford is soft-spoken and humble, or basically the total opposite of what we all witnessed in Grant Park last summer. He described his save in simple terms of action and reaction, even though few people on Earth could do what he did. “[It] kind of popped up and I wasn’t sure if it was falling back toward the net, so I just tried to whack it behind the net,” Crawford said. “I just caught enough of it. CHICAGO – The University of St. Francis’ 2014 softball campaign came to an end Saturday at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. After defeating Calumet College of St. Joseph, 12-4, in the day’s first game, the Saints fell to No. 8-ranked host Saint Xavier University, 9-1, for their second loss of the double-elimination event.

Saturday’s first game was a rematch of Friday’s tournament opener in which the Crimson Wave prevailed, 4-1.

This time, USF jumped out to an early lead as it plated four runs in the opening inning.

USF added three runs in the fourth on a run-scoring single from Natalie Ward and a tworun base hit off the bat of Tori Johnson (Joliet Catholic Academy). RBIs from Lexi Southall, Johnson and Kaley Jendraszak (Lincoln-Way East) gave the Saints three more runs in the sixth.

Kiley Southall went 5 for 5 with four runs scored, while Johnson went 3 for 5 with four RBIs to lead USF’s 12-run, 17hit onslaught. Caitlyn Balandis went the distance, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) to go along with two

walks and four strikeouts.

After going down in order in the bottom of the first, No. 8 Saint Xavier (44-6-1) scored in each of the next four innings en route to the five-inning 9-1 victory. Most of the damage came in the bottom of the third, when the Cougars scored four runs on five hits, and in the fourth, when they plated three runs on four hits.

USF scored its lone run in the top of the fourth when Kuester singled to bring home Johnson, who led off with a double to the right-center field gap. Johnson was 2 for 2.

USF finished its season at 22-20 and came within a game of earning a bid to the NAIA opening round for the second straight year.

Hamlin races to first Talladega win

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press TALLADEGA, Ala. – Denny Hamlin, winner of three races at Daytona that didn’t count, finally has a points-paying victory at a restrictor-plate track.

Hamlin, who opened the season with a pair of wins in Daytona exhibition races only to finish second in the Daytona 500, was again sitting second in the closing laps Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.

But he won a drag race with leader Kevin Harvick on a restart with two laps remaining, and was out front when NASCAR froze the field because of debris from an accident.

Hamlin let out a deep sigh when the yellow flag waved.

“Superspeedway win,” he said on his radio. “With points! With points!”

Hamlin became the eighth winner in 10 races this season as drivers jockey to grab the 16 spots available in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. A victory conceivably gives a driver an automatic berth, and Joe Gibbs Racing now has both Hamlin and Kyle Busch eligible for the Chase.

“We really just want to win races, regardless of the implications of what this means for the Chase,” Hamlin said. “I’m still a short-track guy. Those are my roots. But we’ve come a long way. We couldn’t finish 22nd in a restrictor-plate track, now we know we have the cars and the skills to win.”

The win came at the track where Hamlin made a brief return last year – he ran just 23 laps before turning his car over to Brian Vickers – after missing four races with a broken back. Hamlin’s return to the car briefly built some momentum for the No. 11 team, but as his back continued to ache, the season fell apart in late summer and it took until the season finale for Hamlin to score his first win of the year.

He also missed the Chase for the first time in his career.

It didn’t appear that Hamlin had enough to beat Harvick, already a two-time winner this season, until the final restart.

Harvick didn’t get the help he needed from behind, was hung out without any drafting partners, and Hamlin pulled out to a comfortable lead.

“We were in a good spot there at the end, and what you would want to put yourself in a position to win,” Harvick said. “Our line just never formed up.”

Kyle Larson, who was lined up behind Hamlin on the restart and pushed him past Harvick, wasn’t able to help Harvick when Harvick was stranded in a middle lane.

“He got a little bit far out in front of me, and then [Landon Cassill] pulled out of line down the backstretch and I got stuck in the middle and killed our run for the middle lane and the top lane,” Larson said. “I hated that I couldn’t help Kevin get a Chevy into Victory Lane.”

As Hamlin pulled away, an accident deep in the pack scattered debris, and NASCAR was forced to throw the caution when a bumper was seen laying on the surface.

The yellow prevented Greg Biffle, who led five times for a race-high 58 laps, from pulling out of line in an attempt to grab the victory away from Hamlin.

“I looked in the mirror and I saw the smoke behind me, and I wasn’t really sure whether the caution was going to come out and I didn’t know what to do,” Biffle said.

“I thought about making my move on [Hamlin] right then because I had a huge run and I could have.

“But I just didn’t want to pass too early. I was going to be the lone soldier on the out-

side lane, and I was going to be 15th by the time we got back around to the start finish line.

So I was just waiting. I was setting up to go by him but just never had the chance. I wish I would have known we weren’t going to race all the way back.”

Clint Bowyer finished third and was followed by Michael Waltrip Racing teammate Brian Vickers as Toyota took the victory and three of the top four spots.

AJ Allmendinger finished fifth in a Chevrolet, followed

by Paul Menard and then Harvick, who faded to seventh.

Kasey Kahne, Kyle Larson and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. rounded out the top 10.

Danica Patrick led two times for six laps, and the crowd roared its approval when she drove to the front early in the race. She finished 22nd.

“It was nice to lead laps,” she said. “It made me think real hard about how we’re going to stay up front, because we’ve just got to be there. It was a fast, fast car so we’ll be happy to take this one to Daytona.”

It was a rough day for Brad Keselowski, a two-time Talladega winner, who darted to the lead on Lap 14 but appeared to not have cleared Patrick before squeezing in front of her car.

She tapped the back of Keselowski’s car, sending him for a spin through the grass that caused enough damage to drop him six laps off the pace.

CLEVELAND – One swing

by Dayan Viciedo provided a dramatic turnaround for the White Sox. Viciedo hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning off John Axford, lifting the White Sox over the Cleveland Indians, 4-3, and stopping a fourgame losing streak.

After the ball cleared the right-field fence, Viciedo pointed to the Sox’s dugout, which erupted in celebration.

“That was for the team.

That was very exciting,” he said.

Other than Jose Abreu’s major league-leading 12th homer, a solo drive in the first inning, the AL’s highest-scoring team couldn’t manufacture any runs.

Corey Kluber struck out a career-high 13 in eight innings, including a team-record seven straight. He allowed three hits and two walks, leaving with a 3-1 lead after 110 pitches.

“It’s good for the guys to just stay with it,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “Even though it looks bleak, you can still make a little bit of a comeback.”

Axford (0-2) walked Gordon Beckham leading off the ninth, but struck out Abreu. Adam Dunn walked, and Viciedo homered on a 2-2 pitch.

“I was looking for a pitch I could make good contact with,” Viciedo said. “He made a mistake, and I made him pay for it.”

Axford gave up the homer on a 96 mph four-seamer.

“I fell behind in the count to too many guys, and it didn’t work out,” he said. “I put two guys on base without me even challenging. I just couldn’t find it. The home run was on a fastball. Not a very good pitch, obviously.”

Indians manager Terry Francona, citing pitch count and the narrow lead, didn’t second guess himself for pulling Kluber.

“If anyone got on base, he was going to come out of the game, and I didn’t think that was fair to him,” Francona said.

Kluber had no problem with Francona’s strategy.

“That’s not my decision.

I trust Tito’s judgment,” he said.

Axford has blown two saves in 11 chances, both against the White Sox. He gave up a walkoff homer to Alexei Ramirez in the ninth inning on April 13 at Chicago.

Daniel Webb (2-0) pitched the eighth, and Matt Lindstrom threw a one-hit ninth for his fourth save in seven chances.

Andre Rienzo allowed three runs and seven hits in 42⁄3 innings.

Kluber’s streak began when he struck out Gordon Beckham and Abreu for the final two outs of the third. He fanned Dunn, Viciedo and Ramirez in the fourth, and Jordan Danks and Tyler Flowers struck out beginning the fifth.

Leury Garcia broke the streak by walking on a 3-2 pitch, and Kluber struck out Alejandro De Aza. Kluber fell two strikeouts short of the AL record set by Doug Fister for Detroit against Kansas City on Sept. 27, 2012.

Jane Kohlmann of Plainfield, who began The BoneYard Animal Rescue in February, has done the opposite.

She and her husband, Rich Kohlmann, already have purchased a building at 1609 Rock Creek Boulevard in Joliet and are accepting bids to transform this warehouse building in an industrial park to a multiroom, fully functioning shelter with the capacity to hold 25 dogs.

And Kohlmann, an independent contractor control analyst for ExxonMobil, is paying for it.

“It’s our passion,” she said.

“We just feel it in our hearts.

This is what we want to do.”

Kohlmann and her husband grew up with dogs and their respective household’s contained dogs (theirs and strays), cats and birds. In addition to Buddy, a 2-year-old pug mix the couple is currently fostering, the Kohlmanns own two dogs, both rescues, Kohlmann said.

Maggie, a shepherd golden mix, was 9 months old when she came to the Kohlmanns four years ago from A Caring Place in Westmont. Molly, a border collie mix, was 6 when the Kohlmanns adopted her two years ago from the Will County Humane Society in Shorewood.

“When this came up, we said, ‘Absolutely, we’ll take him,’ ” Kohlmann said.

Last year, Kohlmann started volunteering for local rescues as a dog walker and then moved into fundraising.

About the same time, Kohlmann and her husband decided to invest in some property and started seeking the right

building.

Once Kohlmann realized the desperate need for more animal rescues, the decision to merge both projects was an easy one. The BoneYard Animal Rescue may one day open its doors to cats but, for now, Kohlmann is taking this venture one paw at a time.

“We’re very new to this,” Kohlmann said. “We’re still trying to learn the ropes.”

Kohlmann’s vision for the shelter is separate rooms for

quarantine, bathing, laundry, training and food preparation, with two rooms for a play and a separate room for small dogs. Part of the remodeling will include the installation of trench drains and exhaust fans.

“A lot of work has to be done,” Kohlmann said. “It’s going to be a lot of money, but I think it will be worth it.

You just won’t walk into a big room with kennels. We want this to be a nice place, an asset to the community. We want people to come in and feel that the animals are being taken care of.”

Kohlmann is uncertain of the project’s total cost she is still reviewing bids, she said.

Furthermore, Kohlmann plans to use donated help – such as electricians and volunteers who can paint and lay tile – as much as possible and she is seeking volunteers for those roles.

“Once the building is up, we’ll need volunteers to work different shifts,” Kohlmann.

At that point, The BoneYard Animal Rescue will

lease the facility from the Kohlmanns. At this point, any donations to The BoneYard Animal Rescue will go toward vetting the animals: spaying/ neutering and vaccinations, Kohlmann said.

Even after the shelter is operating, any sick dog or dog having undergone surgery will recover in foster care.

Kohlmann said. Furthermore, no dog will be adopted out unless it is healthy and fully vetted.

A five-member board and two fundraising volunteers are working hard to advertise the rescue through its website, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest, Kohlmann said. In addition to saving dogs, The BoneYard Animal Shelter plans to give back to the community in several ways.

One is through educational programs featuring guest speakers discussing a variety of pet-related topics, such as spaying/neutering, therapy dogs, post-traumatic stress disorder and animal companions, and nutrition.

The other is by letting the community know The BoneYard Animal Shelter cares.

Recently, the rescue hosted a fundraiser that benefited the rescue and the Madison Frost family.

Madison died in a car crash several weeks ago. The rescue’s board secretary had been Madison’s cheerleading coach, Kohlmann said.

For any rescue group, Kohlmann said fundraising is key.

“It’s what pays for the vet bills, the cleaning products and everything you need to run a shelter,” Kohlmann said. “If we don’t get donations, we have to buy those things.”

Petco offers disaster preparedness advice In light of the recent deadly tornadoes in the Midwest, Petco offers tips and advice for keeping pets safe during a natural or man-made disaster.

For pet parents, forgetting to include pets in a family’s disaster preparedness plans can have heartbreaking results.

The following tips can help ensure both people and pets are prepared if and when disaster strikes.

• Keep pets inside. A pet

left outside in the elements can be injured or die, or can get lost.

• Keep current photographs of pets with important documents. If a pet is lost during a disaster, a sharp, recent photo can be used to make fliers.

• Keep an up-to-date identification tag securely fastened on pets. If a pet gets out or flees from a scary scene, this will greatly increase the chance they will be returned.

Take this measure even for indoor cats. Use breakaway collars, and make sure cats can slip their head out if the collar gets caught on something.

Having a cellular telephone number on a pets ID tag instead of a home number is recommended because if there is an evacuation, no one will be home to answer phone calls. Also consider getting microchip IDs for animals.

JOLIET– “Hey, did you see Lost Dogs Illinois last night?” is the common phrase every morning at Joliet Township Animal Control. On April 22 that was the best thing that could have happened to Trish Christensen. She had posted that her 14-year-old cocker spaniel, Shyann, had gotten out on Easter and a few employees noticed her post on Lost Dogs Illinois.

They recalled that a senior black cocker spaniel without identification had been dropped off April 21 and hoped she would be reunited with her owner. They called Christensen right away and she was there in 20 minutes, still shaken up with excitement that Shyann was safe and sound.

On April 23, the U.S. celebrated its first annual National Lost Dog Awareness Day.

This week, let’s look at various uses of a trump suit. First, though, in today’s deal, what should North respond after South opens two spades, showing a respectable six-card suit and 6-10 high-card points?

With an apparent misfit, there might be an impulse to bid three no-trump. But that is unlikely to make. It is safer to bid four spades.

North should hope for five trump tricks and his five winners, or, if South has a side-suit winner, four spade and six side-suit tricks.

Then, how should South plan the play in four spades after West leads the diamond queen?

The full deal suggests that South is doomed to lose two spades, one diamond and one club. But maybe he can take 10 tricks.

Declarer wins with dummy’s diamond king and plays a spade to his king. When it wins, he continues with the spade queen, discarding a club from the dummy. East’s best defense is to duck smoothly, because if South plays a third trump, he goes down. However, let’s suppose that East takes the second trump and returns his remaining diamond.

Now declarer should cash dummy’s heart ace, ruff a heart in his hand, and cash the spade jack.

When West pitches, South twice crosses to dummy with a club and ruffs two more hearts to take two high spades, one heart, two diamonds, two clubs and those three heart ruffs.

This way of taking trump tricks is called an elopement.

Stay well-hydrated to reduce severity of morning sickness Dear Dr. K: I’m in my first trimester of pregnancy and battling terrible morning sickness. What can I do to feel better?

Dear Reader: Morning sickness can put a damper on an otherwise joyous time.

It is very common, affecting 50 to 90 percent of pregnant women. In most cases, the nausea and vomiting associated with morning sickness start around the fifth or sixth week of pregnancy.

They are worst around the ninth week and start to go away around the 16th week.

The severity of morning sickness varies widely. Some women experience only mild nausea, while others have severe nausea and vomiting that lasts all day.

When you have morning sickness, the most important thing is to stay hydrated.

This can be difficult if you are not eating and drinking enough, or are vomiting several times a day. Aim to drink 8 to 10 cups of fluid per day.

Here are some tips to prevent dehydration: • Drink ginger, peppermint or decaf tea.

• Drink water with lemon juice.

ASK DR. K Dr. Anthony Komaroff • Try drinking beverages with electrolytes, such as Gatorade, Pedialyte, coconut water or broths.

• Eat foods with high water content, such as watermelon, grapes, oranges, cucumbers, fruit ices or popsicles.

• Avoid caffeine.

Dietary changes can help keep nausea at bay: • Eat four to six small meals throughout the day.

• Eat foods high in protein, such as low-mercury fish, chicken, nuts, peanut butter, eggs, yogurt and cheese.

• Avoid spicy or fatty foods, or foods that have a strong aroma.

• Keep dry crackers or toast next to your bed.

• Try eating plain, bland foods such as crackers, cereal, toast, pretzels, mashed potatoes and applesauce.

• Suck on hard ginger candies or drink ginger tea.

• Try sniffing a lemon or adding lemon juice to your food or water.

• Take your prenatal vitamin before bed with a snack.

Finally, steer clear of environmental triggers such as noise, touch, odors or motion, which also might trigger nausea. (I’ve listed environmental triggers and tips to avoid them on my website, www. askdoctork.com.)

If your morning sickness continues to be severe and unrelenting, talk to your doctor about medications that might help. Several medications can ease the symptoms and do not cause adverse effects for the developing baby. These include pyridoxine, doxylamine, diphenhydramine, meclizine, dimenhydrinate, ondansetron, prochlorperazine and metoclopramide.

Although I have not treated many women for morning sickness myself, my colleagues in obstetrics tell me today’s treatments are superior to those available when they began training.

That’s good news for the many women who experience this temporary but often debilitating illness.
