The typical main street in rural America started out as the center of activity on the most important, if not the only road in town. As the town prospered, the street grew with it.

In the beginning, the first main street provided access to almost everything through proximity. Everything that the growing town needed was located along the street: city hall, the post office, a grocery store, bank, harness shop, hardware shop, doctor’s office, a pharmacy, restaurants, taverns, a bakery and confectionery among others.

Some people even lived along the main street, especially if then owned one of the local businesses.

Although the original rural main street may have served a large surrounding area of local farmers, the emphasis of the street was on providing pedestrian and vehicle access to the services and businesses within the town.

Although these streets had been improved for bicycles in the 1890s, the biggest problem with these early dirt roads was that they were often ruined by heavy wagons and early automobile traffic, and often remained impassable for much of the year. Early car – particularly the Ford Model T, which sat up high – were designed to cope with rural roads, but roads had to change to accommodate cars.

In 1904, only one-sixth of rural public roads had any kind of surfacing. Most Midwestern main streets at this time began with a 60’ to 100’ foot wide right-of-way, the

space needed to turn around a horse and wagon or early era automobile. By 1935, more than one-third of rural roads were hard surfaced, as many were paved with concrete and asphalt for motor traffic. While the street was used by everyone for transportation needs, wide sidewalks flanked the roadway on either side and were constructed of raised wooden boards so pedestrians would be safely away from the road traffic and did not have to walk in the dirt or mud.

High schools conduct mock accidents to stress safety More online

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Some Romeoville High School students watched in horror Friday morning as village police and fire officials attended to the scene of a mock two-car accident in a school parking lot.

It was a head-on collision.

Broken glass was everywhere, and four occupants were inside the vehicle, wearing their prom outfits, stained red. Fire officials used several pieces of equipment, including the “jaws of life,” to extricate the victims.

Only one of the four occupants of both cars was conscious. After being rescued, he was given a sobriety test by a Romeoville police officer. The officer ended up arresting him and took him in handcuffs into a police vehicle.

“Oh my gosh,” a student out of a crowd of more than 100 said, pulling out her phone to record the whole incident.

Luckily, it was just an exercise aimed at showing students what could happen if they aren’t thinking about safety during prom, scheduled for later that night at Bolingbrook Golf Club.

“We want teen drivers to be safe going to and coming from prom,” said Tom Dorsey, the school resource officer. “We

Some students watched some of the extrication process, then left. Others stayed and took video of the event.

“You realize [from the event] how important it is not to drink and drive,” said junior Jamy Arenas, who was going

to prom with senior Jorge Gutierrez.

“It teaches me not to do it, and to come home safe,” Gutierrez said.

Prom safety awareness

The mock drunken driving accident was one of several events and initiatives high schools in Will County hold to promote safety during prom

week.

“This is something we’ve done for the past seven to eight years,” Romeoville Principal Derek Kinder said. “It brings about awareness.”

Kinder said the school has done other things to raise awareness, including teaming up with Illinois State Police to have students try free throws during halftime at Romeo-

ville basketball games with drunk-vision goggles.

A student group called “Spartans Against Destructive Decisions,” or SADD, helped set up the mock crash event with Romeoville police and fire departments. Senior student Melissa Taylor, a manager of the group, spent hours decorating the cars to make it look like a crash, even mimicking the broken glass on the ground with hard candy.

“With more gore, I hope it tugs on their heartstrings,” Taylor said. “Many don’t believe or think that it can happen to them.”

Lockport Township High School had its prom April 25 at Union Station in Chicago. But before that, it had a “Road to Reality” event April 16.

For students and school, prom not an inexpensive endeavor

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Romeoville High School senior Armon Thurmond said his father let him spend as much as he needed for prom.

“One thing he said to me was splurge,” Thurmond said, adding that prom was a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Thurmond said he spent about $500 for Friday’s prom.

About $200 was for a tuxedo rental, $100 for tickets and $200 for a limousine.

Wilyam Wright, a senior from Plainfield East High School, said he started making sure his finances were in order at the beginning of the year to pay for prom, which cost him about $370.

“Quite a few students I know started saving up last year,” Wright said.

Prom can be an expen-

sive proposition for students and the schools hosting the event. In 2015, the average prom-going teen in America was expected to spend $919, according to a study released

by Visa. That was down 6 percent from the previous year, when the average was $978 At Plainfield East, the cost to put on Friday’s prom ran between $80,000 and $85,000. The train ride to and

from prom, which was held at Union Station in Chicago, alone cost about $13,000.

“As far as prom goes, the event is extremely expensive,” said April Ott, a Plainfield East teacher who also is the head Student Council adviser. “We have to pay for the venue, caterer, security, staffing and transportation.”

This year, Plainfield East’s prom ticket dropped $10, to $85 a student. That

still is more expensive than other high schools’ prom tickets, since it included transportation costs.

“We were able to drop the overall ticket price because we did a lot of fundraising during homecoming,” Ott said, adding that many students still had the prom experience by renting limousines and arranging for special transportation to the train station.

Joliet United Movement working hard for children

By CHRISTINE JOHNSON Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Laughter and hot dogs were on the menu Sunday as children gathered at the park in the center of the Fairview Housing Development for playground fun, pick-up basketball games and kickball.

The Joliet Unity Movement, in conjunction with the Housing Authority of Joliet, is working to bring many activities to the Fairview Housing Development.

Crystal Abbott, president of the Fairview Homes resident council, and Amy Sanchez, a board member with the Jo-

liet Unity Movement, made Sunday’s event possible.

This is the first of many activities the pair has planned for youth living in the Fairview Housing Development.

“I was born and raised in Joliet and I remember we always had something to do on Sundays,” Abbott said.

“That’s not how it is anymore and I want to bring it back.”

“We are on a tight budget because we do not receive any state or federal funding,” Sanchez said. “We rely on member dues and donations from the Joliet community.

The Joliet Unity Movement, comprised of volunteers, began in August 2014 and has hosted recreational and educational activities for area youth in eighth grade and younger. Its sole purpose is to build up and inspire children through mentoring to positively affect the children they serve.

“It’s all about unity in the community,” said Willie Ervins, vice president and member of the Joliet Unity Movement.

Students from both Joliet Central and Joliet West high schools volunteer with the Joliet Unity Movement to fulfill their community service hours.

Angela Jones, a senior at Joliet West High School, is one of the student volunteers for the Joliet Unity Movement. The 17-year-old loves kids and will pursue her teaching degree this fall. She aspires to be a kindergarten teacher.

“I love helping the kids,” said Jones while manning the jump ropes Sunday for the double Dutch jumpoff.

Inside the Fairview Homes community center Sunday, children were treated to movies, games, popcorn and frozen treats.

Jeffery Woods, 5, attends kindergarten at A.O. Marshall Elementary School and was having a great time playing basketball with his uncle, Joseph Nixon.

“I love basketball,” he said. “My favorite player is LeBron James.”

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND JOLIET – Sarah Ellen Taylor of Joliet was passionate about assisting the people who needed the most help, especially those who were abused, said Sarah’s mother Bobbi Lara of Joliet.

“She was energetic and very outgoing,” Lara said.

It was this enthusiastic drive for others that bonded Sarah and her wife Tammy Taylor, a school psychologist, when they met in 2007 at Guardian Angel Home in Joliet, where they both served as volunteers, Tammy said.

Although Tammy was nine years older than Sarah, who was 25 at the time, and had completed graduate school and firmly established her career, Tammy said she was drawn to the woman who shared her values and was studying criminal justice at Joliet Junior College.

Sarah had learned about human trafficking through her studies, Tammy said, which led Sarah to Guardian Angel.

Donna Plier, program director at Guardian Angel Home in Joliet, said the training required to volunteer at Guardian Angel Home is lengthy. Many people don’t finish it, Plier added.

However, training is just one part of becoming an effective volunteer – especially when serving as a medical advocate, which Sarah did, Plier said. The role is demanding.

“People like Sarah are essential to this work and they are hard to come by,” Plier said. “You have to have a certain amount of sensitivity and maturity.”

“She had a lot of compassion for the people she spoke with,” Plier said.

Kristina Slawinski of Joliet, a former advocate and project coordinator with Guardian Angel Home, said she worked with Sarah during the time she went from volunteer to parttime employee.

Slawinski said Sarah wasn’t timid about standing up to anyone who didn’t treat clients with the sensitivity they deserved and would spend time searching for extra resources and options to help clients.

“She was a spitfire, that’s for sure,” Slawinski said.

“She was super passionate about every client she came in contact with. Whether it was at the courthouse, hospital or just a phone call, she wanted to do the most she could.”

Sarah also helped out at Guardian Angel events. If it was a walk, Sarah asked people to sign sponsor cards.

She helped hang posters advertising events. She organized T-shirts and raffle baskets.

“She always went the extra mile,” Plier said.

Sometimes, Plier said, Sarah would become frustrated with the system for insufficient support – but not in an angry way.

“She really wanted to end sexual violence,” Plier said, “and that’s a good attitude to have.”

Sarah and Tammy were married in 2009. In 2010, Sarah was expecting their daughter, Savannah. It was at that point that Sarah became a fulltime mom, Tammy said, and turned her attention to helping Tammy with her volunteer work with an animal rescue, Tammy said.

But, Tammy added, Sarah continued attending Guardian Angel events to show her support.

“Even when she went away,” Plier said of Sarah, “she never really went away.”

Sarah was 32 when she died unexpectedly Jan. 24.

In the report, Channahon, with a population of 12,604, had no violent crimes and 659 property crimes per 100,000 people. The village’s crime score was 132.

In comparison, the town of Effingham, with a population of 12,633, had 190 violent crimes, 3,269 property crimes and its crime score was 806.

The safest village to live is Hawthorn Woods, with a crime score of 60. The most unsafe place is the city of Harvey, with a crime score of 2,409.

Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold attributes Channahon’s high ranking to resident concern for safety and a high level of cooperation between the community and the police department.

Channahon has reduced its already low crime rate by 10 percent by ramping up patrols of residential areas, business districts, schools and parks, making it a top priority, Wold said.

The relationship between residents and the police department is strong, making it easy and comfortable for people to report suspicious activities, helping to prevent

crimes from happening.

Channahon police also are proactive, within the community and with the programs the department offers residents, such as the Police Cadet program for teens who want to be in law enforcement, the Citizen’s Police Academy, National Night Out Against Crime and the Elderly Services program.

With summer just around the corner, the Channahon Police Department will again start up the peer jury program with a new set of jurors.

Students in eighth-grade through high school seniors who commit minor juvenile offenses – such as trespassing, smoking or other small offenses – and are willing to admit their guilt can be heard in front of a jury of their peers, which will determine their punishment.

The program keeps nonviolent offenders out of the system and makes it easier on the families.

It takes a good, proactive police department and a caring, involved community, working side-by-side, to make a village like Channahon a safe place to live.

And that doesn’t happen in all communities, Wold said.

When my kids were growing up in Channahon, they said they hated it here.

“There’s nothing to do,” they would whine. Even though we have a great park district with a pool and the I & M Canal trail for biking and hiking. They were in Cub Scouts, played hockey and baseball and had a great neighborhood for running and playing.

It’s a kid thing; I used to say the same thing about the town I grew up in, Bay City, Michigan, which I now miss terribly.

Now the boys, who both live in different cities in Illinois, miss Channahon the way I miss Bay City.

And why wouldn’t they miss a great small town, with numerous amenities, good schools and a low crime rate?

As a matter of fact, Channahon was ranked by Value Penguin as the ninth safest city to live in Illinois and the eighth safest with a population of less than 15,000.

In its study of FBI crime report statistics, Value Penguin analyzed 298 cities. The study accounted for both violent crimes and property related ones per 100,000 people.

Not every town participates in the FBI report, according to Value Penguin, and it excludes towns with fewer than 5,000 people because small populations with lower crime rates are

Joliet MMA team finds tournament success in Russia JOLIET – Joliet resident Lexus Randle was a little nervous entering the ring for an April 17 hand-to-hand combat championship match in Moscow representing the United States against a Russian opponent.

But the nerves were natural.

“Every time I compete, I get a little nervous,” she said.

“The overall atmosphere was great. A bunch of [fighters] from different countries are all in one place.”

Randle didn’t win. But she earned a silver medal in the competition, hosted by the Hand-to-Hand Fighting Sport International Federation, or HSIF. She was one of three U.S. participants to medal. Joliet natives Adriana Rosas and Stanley Rousonelos II earned bronze. The team’s overall ranking hadn’t been released as of Friday.

They are part of a six-competitor team connected with SUDA, a Joliet-based mixed martial arts training facility at 117 Republic Ave. Homer Glen resident Eyad Eid, Michel Williams of Bolingbrook and Ryan McRaven of Mazon also participated.

SUDA owners and brothers Ron and James Hill were the team’s coaches as the competitors completed a training camp to adapt their mixed martial arts training to the art of Rukopashny Boi. Rukopashny Boi is Russian hand-to-hand combat that takes its roots from Russian paratrooper military close-quarters combat training.

“It’s a different rule set,” Ron said, noting it was similar to mainstream mixed martial arts rules. Exceptions include no “ground and pound” and a different point system, based on rewarding clean strikes.

Several countries participated in the tournament, which wasn’t SUDA’s first in Moscow.

In 2011, SUDA was the United States’ representative in the HSIF international tournament. The team ranked third at the competition, something Ron said was a wake-up call to other

“We surprisingly did exceptionally well,” Ron said, adding U.S. competitors had to compete with athletes from eastern European countries that train all day.

Paying for the trip is the most difficult part of going to a tournament halfway around the world, James said. But SUDA, and the U.S. hand-to-hand combat authority, is helped by some of the competitors having a fan bases willing to sponsor them.

“We do have to reach out to gym members and families to sponsor some of the competitors,” James said.

While the tournament took place April 17 and 18, the team went sightseeing for another couple days before returning April 20.

Two killed in two separate crashes Sunday cchapman@shawmedia.com Illinois State Police are investigating two separate crashes that killed two people in Will County on Sunday.

One man was killed in a one-vehicle crash about 4:17 a.m. on U.S. 52 and Cedar Road in Manhattan. The 26-year-old male of Manhattan was pro-

nounced dead at 5:32 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The final cause of death is pending autopsy results and the Illinois State Police investigation.

Just before 11:30 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 80 eastbound near the Chicago Street exit in Joliet, a five-vehicle crash occurred killing a 65-year-old Joliet resident, Illinois State

Police Sgt. Chris Wilkes said.

Two others were taken to Silver Cross Hospital and have since been released, he said.

The crash included four vehicles and one motor home.

The preliminary investigation indicates the 65-yearold driving a pickup truck crossed into oncoming traffic, Wilkes said.

SPRINGFIELD – In honor of “National Donate Life” month, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is sponsoring a resolution that would designate the month of April as Organ Donor Registration Month in the state.

“Registering as an organ donor is one of the most important actions we can all take to save lives,” Manley said in a news release. “Every day, people die while waiting for a transplant, and those deaths can be prevented if we all register. Multiple lives can be saved by each donor, and through education and awareness we can truly make a difference.”

Manley’s House Resolution 394, along with encouraging everyone to become an organ donor, recognizes and celebrates the life of Robert Rogina, a Joliet native who was involved with the economic development of Joliet.

Rogina died in February 2014 at the age of 72 while waiting for an organ donation.

ALBERT J. DELROSE SR.

Scott Bavone, age 47, of Wilmington, formerly Bolingbrook and Plainfield, passed away Friday, May 1, 2015, at his home.

Born August 13, 1967, in Oak Park, Scott was a son of the late Dominick and Sandra Robinson-Bavone.

He was raised and educated in Bolingbrook, and was a car salesman with Tyson Motors, prior to gaining employment with Ron Tirapelli Ford in Shorewood. On May 7, 2001, Scott married Leigh Ann Thompson. He was a man of many interests including fishing and the outdoors, movies, especially comedies, laughing and for being an avid Chicago sports fan. Scott also enjoyed collecting antiques and tinkering on clocks, reading and sharing his wealth of knowledge, and will be remembered for his love of dogs.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years and best friend for 25, Leigh; two children, Rachel Marie and David Scott Bavone, both of Chicago; two grandchildren, Giselle and Vincent; paternal grandmother, Blanche Bavone of Berwyn; five siblings, Todd (Denise) Bavone of Coal City, Thomas (Tonya) Bavone of Plainfield, Dominick (Kelly) Bavone, Jr. of Indiana, Tricia Fontana of Joliet and Christine (Paul) Sherry of Plainfield; father and mother-in-law, William and Nancy Thompson of Aurora; and seventeen nieces and nephews.

She was involved in 4-H, was an active member of Green Garden United Methodist Church for many years, and was an active member of the Will County Threshermen Association.

David Goldberg, tech exec married to ‘Lean In’ author, dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN FRANCISCO – David Goldberg, a popular Silicon Valley executive and husband of Facebook second-in-command and “Lean In” author Sheryl Sandberg, has died suddenly at age 47, his company and family members said Saturday.

Goldberg was CEO of online survey questionnaire provider SurveyMonkey.

He died Friday night, the company said in a statement on its website.

Family members also reported the death, via postings on Facebook. Neither the company nor family released a cause or other details about his death.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg told The New York Times that Goldberg died while he was on vacation abroad with his wife.

“Dave Goldberg was an amazing person, and I am glad I got to know him,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page. “My thoughts and prayers are with Sheryl and her family.”

In an interview last month, Goldberg told the news site Business Insider of maxing out his credit cards in the early 1990s to fund one of his first Inter-

net ventures, a music site, before going on to work at other tech companies, including Yahoo.

In 2004, Goldberg married Sandberg, another longtime tech executive who now serves as Facebook’s chief operating officer.

Sandberg launched an international conversation about the dearth of women in positions of power with her 2011 book “Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead.”

In it, Sandberg wrote of the adjustments she and her husband had to make to manage two high-profile careers while raising two children.

Goldberg was a “true partner,” she wrote, and he helped make her career possible.

“I truly believe that the single most important career decision that a woman makes is whether she will have a life partner and who that partner is,” Sandberg wrote.

Goldberg’s brother asked on Facebook for friends and families to post their memories on David Goldberg’s Facebook page.

Rauner privatization idea raises oversight concerns

CHAMPAIGN – Gov. Bruce Rauner says his plan to privatize the state’s economic development agency will improve job creation in Illinois. But similar plans in other states and even in Chicago have sometimes raised concerns about transparency and oversight, with taxpayers not always knowing how their money was being spent.

Rauner’s plan, currently being considered by the Illinois General Assembly, would turn much of the development work of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity over to a new, not-for-profit corporation.

Rauner and other supporters say a private agency negotiating tax breaks and other government-funded incentives with companies can move faster and with less red tape than a state agency. They say it could use private money to pay higher salaries and recruit better talent.

But experts on corporate tax breaks say there’s little direct evidence that private development agencies are better than their public counterparts.

Remains of Marine killed in WWII to return to Illinois

WATSEKA – The remains of an eastern Illinois man will be laid to rest this month in his hometown cemetery – more than 70 years after he was killed on a tiny spit of land in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. he died in a 1943 battle.

For 86-year-old Merrill Redman, the return of his older brother’s remains ends decades of pressing authorities for information and hoping that the DNA he provided would someday match that of discovered remains. It is the last chapter in a story that began when he was a 13-year-old boy accepting the Western Union telegram that told the family that his brother had been killed in 1943 on an atoll near Australia.

After the telegram arrived, his mother received a telephone call, asking her about what she wanted done with her dead son’s remains.

“She was too distraught to think straight, and she said to just leave him buried there,” he said. “Two weeks later, she called back and said she changed her mind. She wanted his body shipped home.”

That began a 70-year search for a body that included a photograph of his grave near the end of a plane runway the Marines

had fought to control, and a story that the body had been moved to another makeshift cemetery.

Though the search did not lead to the remains for decades, the family did learn of the circumstances surrounding his death.

Ultimately, though, after chance comments by a Tarawa native, the remains of Jack Redman were discovered last fall. He will be buried with full military honors.

Hikers warned to stay on Starved Rock trails to avoid falls

OGLESBY – Illinois conservation officials are cautioning hikers to stay on marked trails after three people fell in or near Starved Rock State Park and had to be rescued in recent weeks.

All three had left marked paths, including an 18-year-old man who broke both legs after falling from a canyon ledge at Starved Rock in March, a 19-year-old who fell at Starved Rock last Sunday and a 21-year-old woman who fell from

a ledge at nearby Buffalo Rock State Park on Tuesday, officials said.

The entire area in that part of LaSalle County is comprised of St. Peter sandstone, which looks solid but actually is fragile and can crumble under a person’s feet, conservation officials say.

Illinois working with zoos, businesses to prevent bird flu

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Agriculture is working with businesses, zoos and bird owners to reduce the risk of bird flu.

In a news release, Agriculture Director Philip Nelson said the department is calling on everyone involved with birds to work together to help the poultry industry.

The deadly bird flu virus has spread rapidly in many states in the Midwest, where losses are expected to exceed 20 million turkeys and chickens.

Officials say no cases have been detected in Illinois to date.

Illinois woman accused of stealing boss’s identity

URBANA – A central Illinois woman is accused of stealing her boss’s identity to obtain credit.

Laura Huber of Mattoon, 43, was arraigned Friday on four counts of financial identity theft.

She pleaded not guilty.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported Huber worked as an assistant to a real estate agent and had regular access to her bank details because she was in charge of paying bills.

Among the accusations, prosecutors say she made 150 unauthorized charges on her boss’s business account totaling nearly $39,000. They say she also transferred some $27,000 into her own checking account.

If found guilty, she faces up to 15 years in prison.

“Student Council moderators came up with a plan and

proposal with the train station, and it worked with us,” Manville said.

Student body class representative Wilyam Wright said the transportation means students won’t have to worry about others on the road.

“Some people want to drive themselves,” he said. “But we’re going to be in Chicago.

We don’t have to worry about city driving.”

The four Plainfield School District 202 high schools have held several other prom events in the past, including “Operation Prom,” which is similar to the Romeoville High School crash scenario. Also, Road to Reality was held at Plainfield North on April 9.

“The important thing is prom is supposed to be a culmination of four years of high school,” Manville said. “We want to put that in perspective.

And we don’t want one bad choice or position to change a life.”

Baltimore mayor lifts city curfew six days after riots

By BEN NUCKOLS and DAVID DISHNEAU The Associated Press BALTIMORE – Six days after riots sparked by Freddie Gray’s death, Baltimore’s mayor lifted a citywide curfew Sunday, and faith leaders called for continued activism until justice is achieved.

A jubilant crowd of several hundred prayed and sang civil rights anthems at a City Hall rally. Sunday’s peaceful gathering came two days after the city’s top prosecutor announced criminal charges against six officers involved in Gray’s arrest.

Speaker after speaker exhorted the crowd not to rest just because the officers have been charged. The Rev. Jamal Bryant, a fiery leader of the protests that followed Gray’s April 12 arrest and the death of the 25-year-old black man a week later, drew deafening cheers when he said the officers deserve jail time.

“We’ve got to see this all the way through, until all

six officers trade in their blue uniform for an orange uniform,” Bryant said. “Let them know: Orange is the new black.”

The Rev. Lisa Weah, pastor of the New Bethlehem Baptist Church in Gray’s neighborhood, said the message of equal justice for all must not be lost.

“Our prayer is that Baltimore will be the model for the rest of the nation,” she said.

Police said Sunday that 486 people had been arrested since April 23, and 113 officers had been injured at riots and protests. The extent of the officers’ injuries was unclear. Earlier in the week, police had said out of nearly 100 injured officers, 13 were hurt to the extent that they couldn’t work, and 15 were on desk duty.

The order for residents to stay home between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. had been in place since Tuesday; officials originally planned to maintain it through Monday morning.

Protests since last Monday’s

riots have been peaceful, and Friday’s announcement of charges eased tensions.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced the curfew’s end in a statement.

“My No. 1 priority in instituting a curfew was to ensure the public peace, safety, health and welfare of Baltimore citizens,” the Democratic mayor said. “It was not an easy decision, but one I felt was necessary to help our city restore calm.”

Rioting and looting erupted hours after Gray’s funeral last Monday. A 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew was ordered Tuesday after a night of violence, looting and arson.

About 3,000 National Guard soldiers were deployed to the city along with 1,000 extra police officers, including some from out of state. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan said the Guard and the officers would be leaving over the next few days.

“We think it’s time to get the community back to normal again,” Hogan said.

Nepal shuts damaged airport to big jets; quake toll rises to 7,276

By BINAJ GURUBACHARYA The Associated Press KATHMANDU, Nepal – Runway damage forced Nepalese authorities to close the main airport Sunday to large aircraft delivering aid to millions of people after the massive earthquake, but U.N. officials said the overall logistics situation was improving.

The death toll climbed to 7,276, including six foreigners and 45 Nepalese found over the weekend on a popular trekking route, government administrator Gautam Rimal said. Nepal’s Tourist Police reported a total of 57 foreigners died in the April 25 quake and 109 still are missing, including 12 Russians and nine Americans.

was closed temporarily to big planes because of damage. It was built to handle only medium-size jetliners, but not the large military and cargo planes that have been flying in aid supplies, food, medicines, and rescue and humanitarian workers, said Birendra Shrestha, the manager of Tribhuwan International Airport.

There have been reports of cracks on the runway and other problems at the only airport capable of handling jetliners.

“You’ve got one runway, and you’ve got limited handling facilities, and you’ve got the ongoing commercial flights,” said Jamie McGoldrick, the U.N. coordinator for Nepal. “You put on top of that massive relief items coming in, the search and rescue teams

that have clogged up this airport. And I think once they put better systems in place, I think that will get better.”

He said the bottlenecks in aid delivery slowly were disappearing, and the Nepalese government eased customs and other bureaucratic hurdles on humanitarian aid U.N. after complaints. “The government has taken note of some of the concerns that we’ve expressed to them,” he said.

Kai Tabacek, a spokesman for the British charity Oxfam, said the main problem was Kathmandu airport was too small “to deal with huge volume of traffic. Of course, there have been some delays, but these have more to do with the challenge of moving large volumes of goods than customs.”

WASHINGTON – Income inequality is more than a political sound bite to workers in the Capitol. It’s their life.

Many of the Capitol’s food servers, who make the meals, bus the tables and run the cash registers in the restaurants and carryouts that serve lawmakers, earn less than $11 an hour. Some make nothing at all when Congress is in recess.

Members of the House and Senate collect their $174,000 annual salaries whether Congress is making laws, taking a break or causing a partial government shutdown.

“This is the most important building in the world,” said Sontia Bailey, who works the cash register and stocks the shelves at the “Refectory” takeout on the Capitol’s Senate side. “You’d think our wages would be better.”

Bailey, 34, makes $10.33 an hour, a hair above the $10.10 hourly minimum for federal contractors. She had to move

from her apartment to a rented room when the 2013 temporary government shutdown interrupted her income, she said.

KFC pays her better. Bailey works weekends and two evenings a week there, making $12 an hour.

In the Capitol food service world, she said, “everybody has second jobs.”

Down an ornate hallway is 21-year-old Abraham Tesfahun. He serves lunch in the Senate members’ dining room and handles the afternoon cash register in the busy Senate takeout, one floor below.

Tesfahun said his hourly pay is $10.30. But he receives an additional $3 an hour in cash, which otherwise would go toward health insurance. He is covered by his mother’s insurance policy under President Barack Obama’s health care law.

That doesn’t mean Tesfahun, who emigrated from Ethiopia as a teenager, is tight with his mom.

“She kind of kicked me out of the house,” he said sheepishly, when he quit commu-

‘Seventh man’ helping Flyers to soar

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Since the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll was released April 20, Lewis has been recognized as the top men’s volleyball team in the nation, and Saturday, the Flyers were given the No 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Becoming the most well-rounded team in the nation isn’t easy. There are many ingredients in the recipe.

Start with three dominant outside hitters, mix in two competitive middles, then add a crafty setter and quick libero. Those components are vital – but still aren’t enough make up the best team.

Lewis’ backbone is its bench.

Many adjectives can be used to describe the Flyers’ “seventh man.” Creative, engaged, energetic, entertaining, daring. The list could go on and on.

“They’re crazy,” senior outside hitter Greg Petty said. “I think that we get a lot of our success through them because they’re just nuts. You see them.

They’re jumping around, yelling all the time. Whatever it is that they do, they’re a great energy booster for all of us.”

What makes the “crazy” group special is how they compare to other benches. Other teams’ benches might cheer after big points, but those benches don’t have a choreographed celebration dance for service aces. They also don’t lift a defensive specialist as if he’s Jennifer Grey in “Dirty Dancing.”

Lewis’ seventh man – led by seniors Andy Orf, Thomas Logan and captain Eric Butch – brings that energy to each game. It’s not because they’re crazy. It’s because they know it makes a difference.

“We believe in having a lot of fun on the bench; and when everyone is smiling and having a good time, we play our best volleyball,” Butch said.

“We believe that staying energetic and engaged in the game can make a real impact for our guys,” Logan said.

The bench stays in the game by cheering for every point but also does other things to help out teammates. The guys are focused not only on the plays being made but on their particular positions.

The second libero, Orf, focuses on what libero Lucas Yanez does defensively and on serve receive throughout the match. For each game, the Flyers are given an extensive scouting report and told what they need to do to win. If Orf sees the game plan being executed differently, he will talk to his teammate on the next timeout.

“If Lucas makes a certain read that strays away from the game plan and it doesn’t work for him, I’ll ask him what he saw and why he made that move,” Orf said. “We will talk it through and come to a conclusion that makes the most sense for executing defensively. Lucas is a very close friend of mine, so it is easy for us to debate in those situations.

trusts us as seniors with a very high level of volleyball experience.”

All the Flyers act the same.

Like Orf and Yanez, the setters, hitters and middles talk to their counterparts if they see something that is open on the court, or if the game plan is not being executed correctly.

Since the team is a tightknit group, there are no hard feelings.

Other benches might have a problem being in the supportive role because, on some teams, there might be players who are angry about not being on the court. Not one Flyers player feels that way.

“My role on the team is much more of a supportive

role,” Butch said. “I want to do whatever is best for the team, whether I need to talk to them with what they can improve on during the game, or I can just bring a lot of energy from the bench for the guys playing on the court to help them improve their game play.

“We have guys on the team that understand their role and understand the bigger picture of being part of the team. Even though the guys on the court get all the glory, the guys on the bench are the ones who push those starters in practice, so we get satisfaction from helping them in that way.”

The seventh man focuses on executing the game plan during the match, but they help the starters prepare for it during practice.

In the upcoming NCAA tournament, Lewis will face the winner of the Hawaii-Penn

State match. If Hawaii wins, right side Logan will try to hit the ball like that team’s outside hitter, Brook Sedore. If Penn State wins, Butch will try to mimic the style of play of its outside hitter, Aaron Russell. Altering their styles to match the competitions are among little things that prepare the Flyers and go unnoticed.

“Our coaches do an amazing job creating scouting reports for each team we play,” Logan said. “They highlight players’ tendencies and identify these for us on film. This allows us to better imitate the next opponent’s style of play.

“In turn, we feel this allows the starters to get better reads on our opponents in game, and is a big advantage for us.

We have a lot of fun getting crazy on the sidelines during the game, but it is in practice, playing with our teammates, I feel we make the greatest impact.”

Although their contributions might not show up on the stats sheet, everyone at Lewis knows the bench makes a huge impact.

“I don’t know if I can say enough words for our bench.

I think our bench is fantastic,” Lewis coach Dan Friend said. “They find ways to motivate everyone in the gym sometimes. They keep people involved.

“They play a huge part. I wish there was an award for that. You get on the road, and they’re bringing more energy than our opponents’ fans are.

They’re a great group of guys that have accepted that role, adapted to that role and ran with it further than you could ever expect.”

Even though there is no award for what they do, that won’t stop the guys from cheering, dancing, supporting and helping their teammates.

“We are always there for our teammates, for moral support, if nothing else,” Orf said, “Especially as seniors, we are trying to make every possible memory within these next few weeks last as long as possible.

What better way than to spend it with our best friends, on and off the court?”

Kris Fiore thought someone was joking around when he first saw the playoff route for the boys volleyball teams from the four Lincoln-Way schools.

After successfully leading his Lincoln-Way East team through what was regarded as the state’s top sectional field a year ago to state, which it also wound up winning, Fiore figured this year’s path had to be a bit easier.

But he was surprised to learn all the Lincoln-Ways were put in the same regional this year – with the champion facing the winner of the rugged Minooka Regional, which features other top Joliet-area programs, in the sectional semifinals.

“If you had told me last year that our sectional and regional could have gotten any worse, I would have said, ‘Right, you’re kidding me,’ ” Fiore said. “But when I first saw our regional come up online, I actually thought it was an April’s Fools joke because it was comedic.

“But that’s how they decided to do it, so all that we can do is play the games. It’s going to be about who’s getting hot and playing well consistently, because teams may have to beat a good program on three consecutive nights.”

The four Lincoln-Way teams are 82-29, winning nearly three-quarters of their matches while competing regularly against some of the state’s top teams. The squads again showed how good they were by claiming half the top-eight finishes at Saturday’s Lincoln-Way East Invite, regarded as one of the state’s best.

West (22-1) had its 21-match win streak halted in the semifinals by champion Sandburg and wound up taking third place. North (21-8) settled for sixth place. Central (20-9) defeated East (19-11) in the seventh-place match.

With other top squads such as Sandburg (22-4), Joliet Catholic (23-2), New Trier (27-2) and Naperville North taking up four of the top five spots, East’s invitational resembled a ministate finals, except JCA and the Lincoln-Ways are all in the

First-year Central coach Neil Lucchetti also has liked much of what he’s seen from his team. He’s especially pleased by how it performs when everyone’s on the same page, such as when they halted Lockport’s 17-match winning streak last week.

“One of the things that we’ve been talking about a lot is making sure that we stick together as a team,” Lucchetti.

“And when they do, they’re a tough team to beat, since we’re moving the ball around, and we have some hitters who can put the ball away. And lately, our defense has been stepping up, and that’s why we’ve been able to win big games.”

West’s Brian Thorp, another first-year coach, was disappointed to see his squad suffer its initial defeat but believes the Warriors can benefit from the setback.

“In some ways, it’s a good thing,” Thorp said. “We got to see a lot of our weaknesses, and we have some mental, skill and rotational things that we have to straighten out – and until this point, we hadn’t seen those. All of the Lincoln-Ways are very good, so it will be a very interesting regional. A lot of times, it’s just who’s hot at the end and playing good volleyball.”

JCA’s 19-match winning streak was snapped by red-hot Sandburg in the finals. The Hilltoppers hadn’t lost since early in the season, when they fell to Lincoln-Way West.

Coach Rhyen Staley’s Hilltoppers, who should get the top seed in the Minooka Regional, hope to not only move a step closer to an East Suburban Catholic Conference title this week but also continue to progress so they can make a good run in the playoffs.

“That was our 14th match in two weeks, and we went 13-1, with our only loss to one of the best teams in the state,” Staley said. “We won a tournament and beat some ranked teams.

I like our team’s brotherhood and how well they all get along.

Also, when the game is on the line, they’ve been stepping up and they have confidence, so that they don’t give up.”

Providence may be in it for long run VIEWS Dick Goss Way back when I was a pup, late Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Brickhouse often referred to baseball as the most unpredictable game in the world.

That applied not only to the major leagues but also to the game on every other level.

St. Rita visited defending Class 4A state champion Providence on Saturday as the No. 1-ranked team in Illinois and in the nation, for good reason.

The Mustangs were 25-0, including 9-0 in the Chicago Catholic League.

However, as Providence coach Mark Smith and I were discussing before the game, the No. 7 Celtics (19-4, 9-1) could have beaten St. Rita in Wednesday’s game in Chicago. The Mustangs prevailed, 6-5. It came as no surprise Providence got the job done Saturday, finding a way to knock off St. Rita, 6-4. The Mustangs still may be the best team anywhere, but on this day, Providence was better.

And, regardless of Saturday’s result, both teams have several difficult assignments upcoming in the Catholic League Blue. Mount Carmel, Brother Rice, Loyola, St. Laurence (which Providence already has swept) – pick your poison.

Besides St. Rita and Providence, most if not all of those CCL Blue teams are ranked highly by my friends at Prep Baseball Report, and anyone else who chooses to rank teams in the Chicago area or statewide. The league is that strong, that loaded with teams that can beat you on any given day.

“We would be fired up for St. Rita, anyway,” Providence junior shortstop and leadoff man Jackson Stulas said after Saturday’s game. “But because they were the No. 1 team in the country, that gave us extra motivation.”

“It’s baseball,” Smith said.

“Anybody can beat anybody.

The Celtics were doing nothing offensively – except striking out a lot – for four innings against St. Rita righthander Max Franklin. But with the game still scoreless entering the bottom of the fifth, a dropped popup that Matt Waznis turned into a two-base error with his hustle fueled a huge momentum change.

From there, Franklin lost his composure, and the Celtics did some of the things they do best. The coaxed four walks, stole three bases, got a sacrifice fly from Mike Madej and finally the big hit, Justin Hunniford’s two-out, threerun bloop double that climaxed a six-run inning. That was enough for senior righthander Brent Villasenor, who went the distance and benefited from his teammates’ excellent glove work.

“We were not being aggressive early at the plate,” Smith said. “I thought the second

gave us, and we score six runs on one hit.

“That’s baseball.”

That inning demonstrates that no matter how highly a team is ranked, no matter how good it is, it is not immune to the nightmarish inning.

St. Rita might never suffer through another quite like the fifth inning Saturday, but as Hunniford said, “the baseball gods wanted Providence to win. On Wednesday, they wanted St. Rita to win.”

The Celtics, of course, are not immune to bad things happening, either. The fact is, however, they have played good baseball for the most part this season.

“If we pitch like this and don’t make errors, we will be in every game,” Smith said.

Stulas played shortstop last year, while Madej played second. For a while early this season, Smith switched their positions. Now they are back where they were in 2014, and Stulas has become a key to the Celtics’ fortunes. He started two double plays Saturday, singled, walked with the bases

full and had two of Providence’s seven stolen bases.

“Jackson has improved so much as a kid and a player,” Smith said. “He is becoming a leader. Both he and Mike are comfortable now with where they are playing.”

“We have good speed, and what we try to do is put the ball in play and execute offensively, and make the plays on defense,” Stulas said. “Coach Smith puts a couple of us on our own on the bases, and we try to make things happen.

“We want to keep playing like we are, finish the conference season strong and go from there.”

It’s not to say Providence is destined to win the rest of its games. After all, this is baseball. But there is reason to believe the Celtics will be in the CCL Blue race for the long haul and will be difficult to knock out as they pursue a second straight state title.

In other words, they are very good and getting better.

Earnhardt gets 1st Talladega win since ’04

Earnhardt Jr. won four consecutive races at Talladega from 2001, after his father’s death in the season-opening Daytona 500, through 2003. He then finished second in backto-back Talladega races before grabbing his fifth victory in 2004.

But his dominance ended that season, then came several years of slumping results on the track. He finally turned it around last year with a victory in the season-opening Daytona 500, but poor strategy in this race last year cost him any shot at the victory.

His fans were livid over his decision to lay back in the field last May, and he vowed to not do it again. On Saturday, he

admitted he feels a sense of responsibility to his fans to perform well at Talladega.

Earnhardt delivered Sunday, leading a race-high 67 laps and easily winning when no one from a single-file line of cars behind him could challenge him.

The win almost certainly put him in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, and was Earnhardt’s first with new crew chief Greg Ives.

“Everything is just so good for me right now, my personal life, my racing, the team I’m with, I don’t know why,” Earnhardt said. “I don’t feel like I deserve it. I just feel overcome, you know, with a lot of emotion.”

Njegovan leads USF: Sophomore Ryan Njegovan was voted Male Field Athlete of the Meet as the University of St. Francis men’s track and field team finished runner-up at the CCAC Outdoor Championships on Friday and Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Njegovan took top honors in the shot put (55 feet, 0.25 inches) and discus (181-3) and placed third in the hammer throw (139-7). USF’s 3,200-meter relay freshman quartet of Aaron Sanchez, Misael Tobias (Plainfield South), Nathan Costello (Reed-Custer) and

John Principato (Plainfield Central) won in 7:47.53. In the 1,600 relay, Eddie Solorio, Michael Giovannelli, Principato and Tevin Hopkins (Minooka) won in 3:19.02. The Saints’ 4x400 relay of Malik Norman, Giovannelli, Solorio and Jordan Duncan was third in 42.32.

Freshman Brian Blaylock won the 5,000 in 15:25.91.

Safforld, Moody lead USF: Senior LaChrissa Safforld was the Female Field Athlete of the Meet, and freshman Jenna Moody (Plainfield Central) was Female Track Athlete of the Meet to lead St. Francis to second place at the CCAC Outdoor Championships on Friday and Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Safforld was a top-three finisher in five events. She won the high jump (1.65 me-

ters), was runner-up in the discus (45.73) and hammer throw (47.83), and placed third in the shot put (12.53) and javelin (31.75). Moody won the 100 (12.47), 200 (25.14) and 400 (55.90), and was on the runner-up 400 relay (49.05) with Alexis Lambert, Daryll Rodriguez and sophomore Isi Edeko.

Rodriguez won the 100 (15.73) and 400 (1:02.88) hurdles. She also teamed with Lambert, Jessica Risley and Catherine Crosson (Plainfield North) to win the 1,600 relay (3:59.93). Edeko joined Rodriguez and Moody as multiple-event champions with wins in the long jump (5.52) and triple jump (11.67).

Kaitlin Hoy (Minooka) and Donna Aslakson ran second (18:07.89) and third (18:42.55) in the 5,000, as did Lisa Ringstmeyer and Mallory Johnson (Lincoln-Way Central) in the 10,000 with times of 40:08.50 and 40:34.01. Crosson and Nikki Pease (Plainfield Central) were third in the 1,500 (4:51.06) and triple jump (10.51), respectively. TALLADEGA, Ala. – At a track that always has been good to his family, in front of an adoring crowd that so clearly favors him over everyone else in the field, Dale Earnhardt Jr. cruised to an emotional first win of the season.

NASCAR’s most popular driver won Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway, where he received a thunderous ovation as he pumped his fist outside the car window during a slow victory lap.

He stopped at the flag stand to grab the checkered flag and flew it out his car window as he savored his trip around the

track and into victory lane.

It is Earnhardt’s sixth victory at Talladega – but first since 2004 – and he choked back tears after he climbed from his No. 88 Chevrolet.

“It’s just real emotional. I haven’t won here in a long time.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. It was my daddy’s birthday a couple of days ago, and I’m just real emotional, man,” he said.

The late Dale Earnhardt, a first ballot Hall of Fame inductee, won 10 times at the Alabama track. He would have celebrated his 64th birthday Wednesday.

By TOM WITHERS The Associated Press INDEPENDENCE, Ohio – LeBron James embraces challenges, big or small, personal or professional. They drive him, push him, make him dig deeper.

He’s about to face another daunting one. Actually, a dozen of them.

The Bulls are charging at him.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, missing two starters, will open their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals Monday against a confident and finally healthy Bulls team looking to exact some revenge on James, who has eliminated them from the NBA playoffs three times since 2010.

The Cavs, who entered the postseason as the East’s favorite to make the NBA Finals, will be without power forward Kevin Love and his 10 rebounds and floor-spacing ability for the rest of the postseason after he underwent shoulder surgery. They’ll also be missing starting guard J.R. Smith, who has been suspended for Games 1 and 2.

Down two key players, Cleveland appears vulnerable – except James is still around.

“Nah, we’re not vulnerable at all,” James said. “It’s just basketball. You go out and play, you try to win and give it your best shot.”

Speaking of shots, the Cavs know they’ll get some hard ones from the Bulls.

Cleveland is coming off a four-game series sweep over Boston that was anything but easy. The Celtics were physical with the Cavs, who lost Love when Boston’s Kelly Olynyk yanked his shoulder from the socket in Game 4. The Bulls are one of the league’s toughest, most defensive-minded teams, and the Cavs are preparing for a dogfight.

“Without a doubt,” Cavs guard Iman Shumpert said after practice Sunday. “If not more (physical). I just think that’s just every round you go through, it just gets a little more physical because, guys don’t want to go home.”

James has some history with the Bulls. He’s never lost to them in the playoffs, beating the Bulls in 2010 in his first stint with Cleveland and twice with Miami (2011, 2013). He’s averaging 27.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists while going 12-3 against the Bulls in postseason.

Despite his dominance of the Bulls, James dismissed

any thought the past gives him any confidence.

“Every year is different,” he said. “Yes, I’ve had success but that doesn’t mean anything today. My approach is always the same but every playoff run is different and for me I have to make sure myself and my guys are ready for a very, very competitive and wellcoached ball club.”

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau first crossed postseason paths with James as an assistant in Boston. He didn’t have much luck scheming ways to stop James then, either.

“The only thing you can do with him is try to make him work for his points,” Thibodeau said. “You can’t really give him a steady diet of anything. You have to mix it up on him. The thing that makes him who he is he can beat you a lot of different ways. It’s not only his scoring. It’s his passing. He’s seen every type of defense there is.”

And unlike past Cleveland teams, the Cavaliers have two All-Stars: James and guard Kyrie Irving, who averaged 23.3 points against the Celtics in his first playoff series.

“Any team that has LeBron and Kyrie, you’re not short-handed,” Thibodeau said.

LAS VEGAS – The check was for $100 million, a payday so mind boggling that Floyd Mayweather Jr. couldn’t help but show it to a few reporters when the night was done.

“No pictures, though,” Mayweather said, sliding the check out of an envelope. “Don’t want any pictures of it.”

The check soon will be cashed, adding to the millions Mayweather already has stashed in his bank accounts.

It was actually just a down payment for his night’s work, which could total more than $200 million by the time payper-view sales are tallied.

The richest fight ever wasn’t the best fight ever, but that wasn’t entirely Mayweather’s fault. He did what he usually does Saturday night against Manny Pacquiao in a win that cemented his legacy as the best of his generation, even if he didn’t win any new fans doing it.

Still, the fight will be a tough act to follow if only because of the staggering money it brought in. Hard to imagine Mayweather fighting for a paltry $30 million or $40 million after a night he made history with the richest single payday any athlete of any sport has made.

He said he’ll fight once more in September, then hang up the gloves. Mayweather says it’s time to enjoy the fruits of his labor from a sport that has consumed his life since he was a kid throwing punches in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

“I don’t really think I’ll miss the sport,” Mayweather said. “I don’t even watch boxing. At one particular time, I loved the sport of boxing. I wanted to go to every fight and wanted to be at every boxing event. But I just lost the love for the sport.”

Before a well-heeled crowd of 16,507 that cheered every time Pacquiao threw a punch, Mayweather dominated late once again to pull out a decision win that seemed closer in the ring than it did on the scorecards. Pacquiao even thought he won, although punch stats showed Mayweather landing far more punches and even throwing more than the usually frenetic Filipino.

Pacquiao would blame a shoulder injury suffered in training last month for not being able to throw more right hands. His handlers would blame Nevada boxing officials for not allowing him a shot to numb the shoulder just before the fight, although the excuse rang hollow.

CHICAGO – The Milwaukee Brewers had not won consecutive games this season. Then they came to Wrigley Field.

Aramis Ramirez homered and broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-run single, helping the Brewers beat the Cubs, 5-3, on Sunday.

Milwaukee, a big leagueworst 7-18 following a 2-13 start, took two of three against the Cubs for its first series win of the year.

South used Blackwood before settling into six spades. (Yes, Roman Key Card Blackwood would have been better because South would have learned that North held the spade queen.)

From South’s use of Blackwood, he is supposed to have second-round controls in both rounded suits. So the defense’s only chance is to score a trump trick. To stop partner from going wrong, West should continue with the diamond five. East ruffs with the vital spade nine, which effects an uppercut and promotes a trump trick for West.

When you want partner to ruff, lead a loser, not a winner.

lative dose. The people who took the highest doses for the longest time had a 54 percent higher dementia risk than people who took the lowest doses for the shortest time.

Several prior studies have come to the same conclusion as this study.

These prior studies had included only prescription drugs. This study is the first to include OTC drugs.

In that way, it is more complete.

This study and several before it that come to similar conclusions are disturbing. Drugs with anticholinergic properties are widely used; I regularly take a medicine (fortunately in low dose) that has anticholinergic effects. I think this study was particularly well done.

The body produces less acetylcholine as we get older, and blocking its effects can deliver a double whammy to older people.

So what does one do when presented with evidence like this? I think we have to balance the benefits we know we are getting from the drug against the possible risks. We also have to ask ourselves if we have any options – other drugs to treat the same symptoms, but which do not have prominent anticholinergic effects.

If you regularly take an anticholinergic drug, talk to your doctor about alternatives. For example, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a good alternative to tricyclic drugs if you have depression. Newer antihistamines such as loratadine (Claritin) can replace first-generation antihistamines.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve been taking over-the-counter antihistamines for years to control my allergies. Now I hear I may have to worry about dementia. How real is the concern?

Dear Reader: Antihistamine drugs have “anticholinergic” (an-tee-cole-inER-jik) effects. That means they have some tendency to block the action of a natural substance called acetylcholine. This substance transmits messages in the nervous system. In the brain, it is involved in learning and memory; in the rest of the body, it stimulates muscles to contract.

Drugs with anticholinergic effects include tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, some muscle relaxants, some intestinal relaxants, treatments for dizziness and drugs to treat overactive bladder.

Between about 10 and 40 percent of older adults take drugs with anticholinergic effects. We’ve known for a long time these drugs can cause temporary symptoms such as sleepiness, confusion, and problems with short-term memory and reasoning.

Earlier this year, researchers published a study in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine which indicated these drugs also may increase the risk of a long-term problem: dementia. The research team studied nearly 3,500 men and women ages 65 and older. They noted all the drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC), each person took the 10 years before starting the study. Then the team tracked the participants’ health for an average of seven years.

During that time, 800 of the volunteers developed dementia. The researchers found that people who used drugs with prominent anticholinergic effects were more likely to have developed dementia than those who didn’t use them, and the risk of dementia increased with the cumu-
