fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Two students from St. Dennis School in Lockport came to school Wednesday morning not in their parents’ car or in a school, bus but in a police car.

Lockport police officers Kevin Brauch and Marty Hamilton pulled up to the home of Molly Longo to pick up her two children and drop them off at school. The Longo family won the squad car ride to school by placing the highest bid in a silent auction run by St. Dennis School.

When Brauch showed up at Longo’s home Wednesday morning with chocolate-sprinkled donuts, he could see the children standing in the driveway with Longo taking pictures. One of the children was nervous with excitement, he

said.

“They were smiling and checking out the car and asking all sorts of questions,” he said.

The Lockport Catholic school, which serves students from pre-school to eighth grade, runs a fundraiser in the fall known as the Jubilation Dinner, Dance and Auction that helps fund the school. Bidders can win for their children a ride to school from the local fire and police departments.

Lisa Smith, the school’s principal, said the fundraiser aims to raise about $55,000 for the school, but this year fell somewhat short, with little more than $50,000 raised, she said.

The children love being able to take a trip to school with Lockport police and fire staff, she said.

“I think we’ve had a great

relationship with the Lockport Police Department,” she said.

“They really go above and beyond to take care of us on a daily basis.”

Brauch said this was the second year the police department offered a ride to winners of the silent auction. The initiative is similar to a previous community event the police department ran May 22 called “Coffee with the Cops,” where police officials engaged with the community in a relaxed setting.

Molly Longo’s children also will get a lunch and tour of the Lockport police station sometime this summer.

When Brauch and Hamilton dropped off the two students at the school, all the students came out to greet them he said.

“They gave them a heroes’ welcome to the school,” he said.

Police take to the rooftops for Special Olympics fundraiser

Naperville man, 71, killed in I-55 crash LEMONT – A Naperville man was killed Wednesday when his SUV struck a light pole on Interstate 55.

The 71-year-old man apparently lost control of the vehicle, veered off the roadway and struck the light pole, state police said.

The accident happened at about 2:28 p.m., police said.

The man was driving a 2013 GMC Acadia southbound near Interstate 355. Police did not release his name.

The HERALD–NEWS For the 12th year, hundreds of law enforcement officers from throughout the state will stake out Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops Friday to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

Starting at 5 a.m., police officers are scheduled to cover 174 Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops to raise awareness and donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois, according to a news release from event organizers.

Dunkin’ Donuts also is donating $15,000 to the Torch Run fund, according to the news release. To meet their goal, police officers will have to top last year’s total of $310,000. The annual Torch Run sees more than 3,000 officers cover 1,500 miles carrying the Flame of Hope through the streets of their hometowns and to the State Summer Games in Normal in June.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – American flags waved in the breeze along highways and streets for miles Wednesday as communities honored the late Lance Cpl. Steven Hancock as he was escorted to Morris.

Hancock and his family were escorted Wednesday afternoon from O’Hare Airport to U.C. Davis – Callahan Funeral Home by police and fire departments, the Illinois Patriot Guard and the Leatherneck Motorcycle Club.

“We don’t want people to forget what these families have sacrificed,” Mike Stuckey with the Illinois Patriot Guard said. “The ultimate sacrifice is what we are here for today.”

Hancock, a 2011 graduate of Coal City High School, died last week after falling from an aircraft during a training flight in North Carolina.

Hancock would have celebrated his 21st birthday last week.

Rhode Bronk, commander of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 86, sat in a chair on Illinois Avenue waiting for the procession in the hot afternoon sun.

Bronk was injured while serving in Vietnam, so he understands the importance of bringing a service member home.

“We’re here because veterans are about a brotherhood.

We’re here so we will never forget,” Bronk said. “We need to support the family.”

Beside him stood Senior Vice Commander Wendell Johnson, who served with Bronk in Vietnam.

Stacy Clement with Project Patriotism handed out more than 300 flags to community members who lined the streets to await the processional.

Melissa Dunning grabbed one of the flags and took her place on the sidewalk on Washington Street where the processional was scheduled to end in front of the funeral home.

“It’s the right thing to do,” she said, wiping tears from her eyes. “It’s very touching.

Nothing is guaranteed in this world. That is the sad thing.”

A few feet away, sisters 8-year-old Haylee and 7-yearold Halayna Keymon stood holding American flags with their mother.

“We’re here for the soldier,

because he served our country,” Haylee said.

Hancock’s Boy Scout Troop was represented as well. Bryan and Cindy Bingheim stood holding Boy Scout flags representing Troop 466 in Coal City where Hancock was once a Boy Scout and achieved Eagle Scout rank.

“On our way here we talked about how it is a patriotic and civic duty to participate,” Cindy Bingheim said.

As the escort progressed from Chicago, updates were sent to the organizers in Morris alerting them to the whereabouts of the escort so they could have everyone in place as they rolled into town.

Flag holders were spaced an arm’s length apart with the flag in their left hands as they

either saluted or placed their right hands over their hearts as the processional came into view.

The crowd grew silent as the processional came to a stop outside the funeral home.

Hancock’s family stood holding one another as the casket was unloaded by Marines in dress uniform to be transported into the funeral home where they were able to spend time alone with their loved one.

Funeral home owner John Callahan said the family did the best they could under the circumstances.

“His mom asked me to tell the media that Steven was all about serving this country and living the life of a good Christian,” Callahan said in a phone call Wednesday.

Visitation information Visitation for Lance Cpl. Steven Hancock will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, 455 W. Southmor Road, Morris.

A celebration of Steven’s life will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, with burial to follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps.

Joliet bus riders respond well to Ventra card

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Pace bus rider Ronald Hawkins isn’t too worried about forgoing his old transfer card for a Ventra card to get to and from work in Bolingbrook three times a week.

The 53-year-old from Joliet was one of 350 bus riders who received free Ventra cards outside of Joliet Union Station on Wednesday as part of Pace’s efforts to ease the transition to a new payment system.

Ventra cards, which were introduced in 2013, will replace the magnetic strip cards that bus riders have used for transfers for years but will be obsolete July 1.

“It doesn’t bother me at all,” Hawkins said. “They said no more transfers after July 1. I didn’t know that, so I’m glad they were out here. Now I know.”

Pace employees distributed Ventra Cards to customers in Joliet on Wednesday and were on hand to provide information and answer questions.

The cards had a $2 balance – enough to board and make a transfer.

Hawkins said he likes that the Ventra payment system allows him to use a single-fare card to board any bus or train on Pace and CTA throughout the Chicago area. Metra is expected to make the switch, at least in part, sometime this summer.

“That’s kind of nice,” he said.

Pace’s shift to the Ventra system is proving to be a lot less bumpy than the CTA’s transition last year, when thousands of customers were initially unable to activate their new cards or waited for weeks for their cards to arrive in the mail.

Kelvin Peete, 37, of Joliet, received his first Ventra card on Wednesday. He was happy to hear if a Ventra card is reported as lost or stolen, the card is inactivated so the balance is protected.

“That’s awesome. I think everything you get should be insured,” he said.

As part of the rollout, Joliet Union Station will be one of the first locations expected to get Ventra vending machines installed, said Patrick Wilmot, a spokesman for the transit agency. The machines are expected to be in operation by June 9, he said.

There are also several retail locations throughout Joliet and surrounding areas where people can reload their cards, he said.

Pace soon will require payment by Ventra card or cash.

Chicago Card/Chicago Card Plus will be phased out by Sunday. Magnetic strip cards will be discontinued July 1.

By BRIAN STANLEY CHICAGO – A Crest Hill woman will spend time in a halfway house and in home confinement for buying guns for her brother – a convicted felon – to sell.

Angela Carrino, 25, was sentenced Friday in federal court to four years of probation. She must serve two months in a halfway house and a year of home confinement, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher McFadden. She faced up to two-and-a-half years in prison.

From November 2012 to February 2013, Angela served as a “straw buyer” for Richard J. Carrino, 29, to purchase five handguns in Missouri and ship them to him in Illinois. Rich-

ard, who has been convicted of illegally owning a firearm three times since 2002, scratched off the serial numbers of three semi-automatic pistols that he sold to an undercover agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

McFadden told Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer that Angela Carrino made a “few hundred dollars” from the deal. “[Her] concern when she was interviewed by agents was not about the public safety – it was about, ‘If she was going to lose her gun rights’ upon conviction,” McFadden said.

Court records show Angela Carrino has an address in O’Fallon, Missouri, and has lived at her grandmother’s house in Crest Hill.

Richard and Angela Carrino both pleaded guilty to conspiring to illegally transferring firearms, selling firearms to a convicted felon and making false statements in licensed firearm records. Richard Carrino was sentenced last month to nine years in federal prison.

Customers can continue to pay with cash but, after July 1, cash-paying Pace customers will no longer be able to buy a transfer card because of the deactivation of the magnetic strip card system. Because of this, customers who need to purchase transfers must transition to Ventra before July 1.

JOLIET – Unattended chicken was responsible for two separate small fires Tuesday.

The first was reported at 6:04 p.m. in a sixth-floor apartment at 311 N. Ottawa St. Firefighters were called after smoke went into the hallway. When they went into the apartment, firefight-

ers found burnt chicken in a pan on the stove, according to reports. The resident had left the apartment and was down in the lobby when firefighters arrived.

At 9:26 p.m. a smoke alarm brought firefighters to the 300 block of Water Street where they again found chicken burning in a pot, according to reports.

No one was injured in either fire.

Local spelling champ heads to Scripps

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Will County Spelling Bee champion Meghana Kamineni has advanced to the semifinals of the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee, according to official results.

The Homer Junior High eighth-grader accomplished her goal of making it farther in the competition than last year, when she didn’t win enough points to make the semifinals cutoff score.

The semifinals will be televised Thursday on ESPN2 starting at 9 a.m.

Kamineni joins Maroa-Forsyth Middle School eighth-grader Yasir Hasnain as the only Illinois contestants to move on to the semifinals.

Kamineni passed the first round, which included a computer-based preliminary exam consisting of 24 words and a vocabulary test.

She then passed the next two rounds by spelling correctly “raita,” an Indian side dish made of yogurt, and “Templar,” a member of a religious military order established in 1118 in Jerusalem.

Minooka hotel moving forward

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Developers of a Holiday Inn and Suites could break ground late this summer now that Minooka trustees unanimously approved final plans Tuesday night.

The village board approved the final plat of subdivision and incentive package.

Marquette Properties Inc. owners Peter and Michael Fleming were the driving force behind the 83-room hotel at Bob Blair and Ridge roads. The hotel will cater to corporate travelers, Michael Fleming said.

“This was the last step in the process of bringing the hotel to the village,” Village Administrator Dan Duffy said. “Now we are moving forward with proper zoning, and will move forward with permits and actual building.”

Local industry representatives have encouraged construction of a hotel in the area for some time. The

closest hotels for business travelers are in Morris and Joliet.

Peter Fleming put together a group of experts that would bring the best possible facility to service the area’s need, said Frank Cortina Jr., counsel for the project “They have shown the property numerous times and put together a group that could make this a reality,” Cortina said. “They will fight to make sure Minooka gets a great product.”

The hotel, owned by parent company Hilton, is expected to serve between 20,000 and 30,000 people a year, bring in 150 temporary tradesmen jobs during construction, and 25 to 30 longrange jobs ranging from management to housekeeping.

“The benefit to the community is going to be the tax dollars that will come from the hotel patrons who will be spending money in the community,” Michael Fleming said.

The facility’s incentive package includes a three-

year, 50 percent real estate tax abatement equaling about $240,000; waiver of village building permit fees between $15,000 and $25,000; and a 90 percent rebate of the hotel tax for 10 years or until the total incentive package, including tax rebates and fee waivers, totals $1.5 million, whichever comes first.

“The village has been fabulous,” Mike Fleming said.

“They are one of the most business-friendly communities in Illinois.”

“It’s a nice addition for our community,” Duffy said. “They are not only an asset but will bring in more restaurants, hotels and businesses associated with the hotel.”

Ordinance sets rules for medical cannabis facilities Village trustees unanimously approved an ordinance that sets the parameters and regulations for medical marijuana cultivation centers and dispensing organizations.

cal Cannabis Pilot Program Act in Illinois effective Jan. 1, many municipalities are creating proper zoning laws to cover where they can be located, Duffy said.

The ordinance specifies the distance these facilities must be from places such as public parks, churches, schools and day care facilities.

The state act allows a maximum of 22 medical cannabis cultivation centers and 60 dispensing organizations in Illinois. There currently are no plans for either type of center for Minooka.

“By law, you have to have zoning for these facilities,” Duffy said.

In other business, trustees approved the refinancing of $3.4 million in general obligation bonds and $3.4 million in waterworks and sewerage system revenue bonds to lower the interest rates.

Also, low bidder Narvick Brothers was awarded the village hall community room renovation project for $1,118,000 and the locker and restroom project for $226,000.

Will County Board Member Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen, sounded off about the Facebook citation incident Wednesday before learning the ticket would be voided. Calling it a privacy issue, he said he planned to bring it up at the next Forest Preserve District meeting in June.

Balich said he made contact later in the day with Marcy DeMauro, the district’s director, to find out the ticket would be voided.

“She said the police officer is going out to the woman’s house to apologize,” Balich said. “I’m glad this is resolved.

Will County Forest Preserve District officials are backtracking from a citation issued to a woman for what she posted on a Facebook page.

Lt. Tracy Phillips, with the Forest Preserve District’s police department, said the ticket was issued last week when a district employee was monitoring unconfirmed reports of kennel cough on a Facebook group dedicated to the Whalon Lake Dog Park.

“In the process of [monitoring the Facebook group], one of our nonpolice employees saw a comment that they interpreted as stating that the person was in the dog park without a permit. They forwarded that on to one of our officers who also interpreted it that way. Based off of that, they issued a ticket,” she said.

The Facebook post in question read, “I was feeling bad

that I haven’t bought a pass and been bringing Ginger there but I’m pretty glad I haven’t.”

The citation read: “It has been brought to our attention that on May 18, 2014, at 8:58 p.m., you posted on a social media site that you knowingly entered the dog park without a valid 2014 dog park permit.”

Phillips said the woman reportedly expressed frustration about the citation over social media, arguing her post was misinterpreted when she was in fact only commenting on being happy she hasn’t brought her dog to the park because of the possible kennel cough outbreak.

“If they would have asked a supervisor about issuing the ticket, it would have been denied or voided at that point,” Phillips said. “It would have been denied instantly.”

The woman has since been notified that the ticket will be voided, Phillips said, adding that monitoring social media

Suresh M. Manjanath, 45, of Tarrytown, New York, met with an undercover investigator posing as the mother of two young children at a local restaurant, Police Chief Jeff Wold said.

Manjanath solicited lewd sex acts from the investigator and also was distributing child pornography online,

Wold said. The investigation was conducted by Channahon police and the Illinois Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, where one Channahon officer is assigned.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BOLINGBROOK – A pair of Chicago men were arrested Saturday after invading a Bolingbrook home, according to the Bolingbrook Police Department.

Jerry O. Griffin, 32, and Keauncie T. Lee, 26, both of Chicago, were charged with home invasion, armed robbery, resisting arrest, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, four counts of aggravated battery, not having a FOID card, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and aggravated unlawful restraint Saturday in the 400 block of Sioux Drive after a report of people threatening residents with a gun, according to a police news release.

Officers arrived at the residence while the offenders

were still inside the home, according to police. One offender jumped out of the second floor window with several officers in pursuit.

After a lengthy foot chase, he actively “fought his arrest,” causing minor injuries to two officers, police said. The other offender was apprehended inside the home, the release said.

A loaded Glock was found near the window from which one of the men jumped. Cash, which was stolen from one of the victims, was recovered, police said.

No injuries were reported to the two adults and two children who in the home, police said.

Both men have lengthy criminal histories and were taken to Will County Adult Detention Facility, according to the release.

The department has treated several surrounding communities in the past couple of years, including Homer Glen, Lockport and Naperville.

Schirmer said the moth populations are tested in different locations every year because the pests often spread to different locations via cars, trains and other modes of transportation.

The emerald ash borer isn’t the only threat to trees in the area.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture in the coming weeks will conduct aerial spraying for gypsy moths, an invasive species that threatens oak trees.

“The [borer] is a hot-button topic right now, but the European gypsy moth has been around for 140 or 150 years,” said Scott Schirmer, a plant and pesticide specialist supervisor for the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

The emerald ash borer, an invasive species from Asia, has been destroying ash trees here and across the United States.

The gypsy moth is dangerous because in its caterpillar stage it devours leaves, which leads to defoliation, Schirmer said. The department wants to

Areas being treated in Romeoville are south of Interstate 55 including the Interstate 355 overpass on New Avenue and Joliet Road at Rock Lake, northeast to Argonne National Laboratory.

Romeoville sent out a news release Tuesday advising residents of the aerial treatment.

Joliet and Crest Hill areas includes a rectangular section between Wilcox Street and Route 53, and Ludwig and Curtis avenues. A larger, secondary area stretches from the intersection of Route 30 and Ruby Street to Canal Street, north to Rockdale Junction and the railroad tracks.

The treatment contains plastic PVC flakes the size of pencil shavings imbued with

female moth pheromones designed to make it harder for the males to find females.

Schirmer said the treatment is safe for humans.

ELWOOD – Village officials announced Wednesday that Elwood will begin enforcing new restrictions on truck traffic this week.

The restrictions approved May 20 by the village board are designed to reduce heavy truck traffic on State Route 53 and Walter Strawn Road.

An announcement from the village noted the restrictions come “in the wake of a deadly accident where a truck collided with a family’s minivan.” The March 17 accident killed 8-year-old Madison Frost of Crest Hill.

Also, the Illinois Commerce Commission has scheduled a hearing for June 18 on safety issues related to a Route 53 railroad crossing where trucks crashed the gates 47 times in 2013.

“We believe making minor adjustments to limit heavy truck traffic will make a big difference in protecting the safety and well-being of our

residents who are put in harm’s way on a daily basis,” Village President William Offerman said in a written statement. “This is the responsible and right thing to do. We cannot afford to wait until the state decides how to deal with this very dangerous crossing.”

The new traffic restrictions prohibit left turns from Baseline Road onto Walter Strawn Road. They also prohibit right turns from Walter Strawn onto Baseline. The news release from the village said Elwood is also trying to prohibit trucks from using CenterPoint Drive as a thoroughfare.

Village officials said they are trying to encourage semitrailers to use the interchange completed at Interstate 55 and Arsenal Road. That interchange was designed for semitrailer traffic coming from the intermodal yards both in Elwood and Joliet that are part of CenterPoint Properties industrial parks.

She called herself a poet, in love with the “sound of language,” “the music in language,” as she explained to the AP in 2013. She was a wonder to Toni Morrison, who marveled at Angelou’s freedom from inhibition, her willingness to celebrate her own achievements. She was a mentor to Oprah Winfrey, whom she befriended when Winfrey was still a local TV reporter.

She mastered several languages and published not just poetry but advice books, cookbooks and children’s stories. She wrote music, plays and screenplays, received an Emmy nomination and never lost her passion for dance, the art she considered closest to poetry.

“The line of the dancer: If you watch [Mikhail] Baryshnikov and you see that line, that’s what the poet tries for.

The poet tries for the line, the balance,” she told The Associated Press in 2008, shortly before her 80th birthday.

Her very name was a reinvention. Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis and raised in Stamps, Arkansas, and San Francisco, moving back and forth between her parents and her grandmother. She was smart and fresh to the point of danger, packed off by her family to California after sassing a

white store clerk in Arkansas.

Other times, she didn’t speak at all: At age 7, she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend and didn’t talk for years. She learned by reading and listening.

“I loved the poetry that was sung in the black church: ‘Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land,’ ” she told the AP. “It just seemed to me the most wonderful way of talking. And ‘Deep River.’ Ooh! Even now it can catch me. And then I started reading, really reading, at about 7½, because a woman in my town took me to the library, a black school library. ... And I read every book, even if I didn’t understand it.”

At age 9, she was writing poetry. By 17, she was a single mother. In her early 20s, she danced at a strip joint, ran a brothel, got married and then divorced. But by her mid-20s, she was performing at the Purple Onion in San Francisco, where she shared billing with another future star, Phyllis Diller. She also spent a few days with Billie Holiday, who was kind enough to sing a lullaby to Angelou’s son, surly enough to heckle her off the stage and astute enough to tell her: “You’re going to be famous. But it won’t be for singing.”

After renaming herself Maya Angelou for the stage (“Maya” was a childhood nickname, “Angelou” a variation of her husband’s name),

she toured in “Porgy and Bess” and Jean Genet’s “The Blacks” and danced with Alvin Ailey. She worked as a coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and lived for years in Egypt and Ghana, where she met Nelson Mandela, a longtime friend; and Malcolm X, to whom she remained close until his assassination in 1965.

Three years later, she was helping King organize the Poor People’s March in Memphis, Tennessee, where the civil rights leader was slain on Angelou’s 40th birthday.

“Every year, on that day, Coretta and I would send each other flowers,” Angelou said of King’s widow, Coretta Scott King, who died in 2006.

Angelou was little known outside the theatrical community until “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” which might not have happened if writer James Baldwin hadn’t persuaded Angelou, still grieving over King’s death, to attend a party at the home of Jules Feiffer, a cartoonist and writer. Feiffer was so taken by Angelou that he mentioned her to Random House editor Bob Loomis, who persuaded her to write a book by daring her into it, saying that it was “nearly impossible to write autobiography as literature.”

“Well, maybe I will try it,” Angelou responded. “I don’t know how it will turn out. But I can try.”

NEW YORK – Maya Angelou’s story awed millions. A childhood victim of rape, she broke through silence and shame to tell her tale in one of the most widely read memoirs of the 20th century. A black woman born into poverty and segregation, she recited the most popular presidential inaugural poem in history.

“I’m not modest,” she told The Associated Press in 2013.

“I have no modesty. Modesty is a learned behavior. But I do pray for humility, because humility comes from the inside out.”

Angelou, a renaissance woman and cultural pioneer, died Wednesday at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was 86.

“She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace,” said her son, Guy B. Johnson.

Tall and regal, with a deep, majestic voice, she was unforgettable whether encountered in person, through sound or the printed word. She was an actress, singer and dancer in the 1950s and 1960s and made a brave and sensational debut as an author in 1969 with “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” which became standard (and occasionally censored) reading and made Angelou one of the first black women to enjoy mainstream literary success.

“Caged Bird” was the start of a multipart autobiography that continued through the decades and captured a life of hopeless obscurity and triumphant, kaleidoscopic fame.

The world was watching in 1993 when she read her cautiously hopeful “On the Pulse of Morning” at President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration.

Her confident performance openly delighted Clinton and made publishing history by making a poem a best-seller. For President George W. Bush, she read another poem, “Amazing Peace,” at the 2005 Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the White House.

Democrats cooperate with probe of Quinn’s program

SPRINGFIELD – In a potential election-year embarrassment for Gov. Pat Quinn, Illinois Democrats said Wednesday that they’ll continue cooperating with a legislative review of his $55 million anti-violence program, which a key Republican called a “shameless, useless waste of taxpayer dollars.”

The bipartisan Legislative Audit Commission will try to get people involved in planning and implementing the 2010 “Neighborhood Recovery Initiative” to answer questions after a three-hour appraisal Wednesday of Auditor General William Holland’s caustic review of the program.

The audit scorned the initiative, which sought to target violent crime in 23 Chicago neighborhoods, as hastily implemented and suffering from “pervasive” deficiencies.

Quinn’s critics have derided it as a political slush fund to drum up city votes before a tight 2010 election.

There were few answers Wednesday. The Quinn administration sent to the hearing the director of a successor agency that inherited the program and is credited with bringing more professional standards to its operations.

The audit found the plan, hatched in August 2010 during a summer of intense violence, grew from $20 million to $55 million with no documentation to explain why. According to the report, it was doled out to organizations preferred by Chicago alderman instead of competitively, featured questionable spending and didn’t even target the city’s most

Ill. House panel approves nuclear power resolution

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers have advanced a plan urging environmental agencies to adopt nuclear power-friendly rules following financial struggles at a major state energy provider.

A House committee voted unanimously Wednesday to approve House Speaker Michael Madigan’s nonbinding, bipartisan resolution. The request comes as government agencies are scheduled to require new standards for nuclear power plants this year.

The Chicago Democrat said nuclear power plants should be treated the same as other low-carbon energy suppliers.

He said possible plant closures would hurt job growth and

State police overtime costs increase as result of budget cut

SPRINGFIELD – Budget cuts and staff reductions have led to a jump in overtime costs for the Illinois State Police.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reports the agency paid $1.7 million more in overtime during the last fiscal year than it did in 2010.

Total overtime increased by 20,000 hours in 2013, compared with three years earlier. During that period, the budget shrank by $34 million to $383 million.

Union representative Mike Powel said there’s “a severe morale issue.”

State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said she’s not aware of a morale problem.

She said budgets are being cut across the country and the

agency must “hold the line and utilize the resources we have.”

She said the harsh winter also likely had a role in the overtime increase.

‘This American Life’ changes radio distributor

CHICAGO – The popular public radio show “This American Life” is getting a new distributor.

Chicago Public Media and host Ira Glass said Wednesday they will start independently distributing the show to more than 500 public radio stations.

Public Radio International has distributed the show since 1997. The show debuted in 1995.

“This American Life” shows will be delivered via PRX, The Public Radio Exchange. The show also will take over other operations that Public Radio In-

ternational handled, including selling, underwriting and marketing the show to stations.

State kicks off Illinois produce campaign

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Agriculture is kicking off a media and retail campaign this week to highlight produce grown in the state.

The department said Tuesday the “Where Fresh Is” campaign will use TV ads, billboards and social media to highlight Illinois-grown fruits and vegetables.

More than 300 grocery stores, farmers markets and other locations that sell homegrown food will also display banners with the slogan to let customers know.

This is the second year of the program.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS No end yet to salmonella outbreak tied to chicken WASHINGTON – An outbreak of antibiotic-resistant salmonella linked to a California chicken company hasn’t run its course after more than a year, with 50 new illnesses in the past two months and 574 people sickened since March 2013.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there are about eight new salmonella illnesses linked to the outbreak a week, most of them in California.

So far, there has been no recall of Foster Farms chicken.

The Agriculture Department said it is monitoring Foster Farms facilities and that measured rates of salmonella in the company’s products have been going down since the outbreak began. The department threatened to shut down Foster Farms’ facilities last year, but let them stay open after it said the company had made immediate changes to reduce salmonella rates.

The CDC said 37 percent of victims were hospitalized, and that the outbreak is resistant to many antibiotics.

Voters in California contemplate new state SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Residents of California’s largely rural, agrarian and politically conservative far northern counties long ago got used to feeling ignored in the state Capitol and out of sync with major urban areas.

The idea of forming their own

state has been a topic among local secession dreamers for more than a century. Residents in two counties will have a chance to voice that sentiment next week.

Voters in Del Norte and Tehama, with a combined population of about 91,000, will decide Tuesday on an advisory measure that asks each county’s board of supervisors to join a wider effort to form a 51st state named Jefferson.

Officials in Glenn, Modoc, Siskiyou and Yuba counties already voted to join the movement.

Supervisors in Butte County will vote June 10, while local bodies in other northern counties are awaiting the Tuesday ballot results before deciding what to do.

Kerry tells Snowden to ‘man up’ and come home WASHINGTON – Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday called National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden a fugitive and challenged him to “man up and come back to the United States.”

Kerry was asked about Snowden in a nationally broadcast interview in the wake of an interview in which Snowden said he never intended to be holed up in Russia but was forced to go there because Washington decided to “revoke my passport.”

Asked about this, Kerry replied on NBC’s “Today” show: “Well, for a supposedly smart guy, that’s a pretty dumb answer, after all.”

Google to build prototype of truly driverless vehicle

By JUSTIN PRITCHARD The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Google plans to build and launch onto city streets a small fleet of subcompact cars that could operate without a person at the wheel.

Actually, the cars wouldn’t even have a wheel.

Or gas and brake pedals. The company said the vehicles will use sensors and computing power, with no human needed.

Google Inc. hopes that by this time next year, 100 of the two-seaters will be on public roads, following extensive testing. The cars would not be for sale and instead would be provided to select operators for further tweaking and have limitations such as a 25 mph top speed.

The announcement presents a challenge to automakers that have been more cautious about introducing fully automated driving and to government regulators

who are scrambling to accommodate self-driving cars on public roads. Other companies are working on the technology but none as large as Google has said it intends to put such cars in the hands of the public so soon.

To date, Google has driven hundreds of thousands of miles on public roads and freeways in Lexus SUVs and Toyota Priuses outfitted with special sensors and cameras.

But with a “safety driver” in the front seat, those vehicles were not truly self-driving.

Instead of the standard controls, the prototypes would have buttons to begin and end the drive. Passengers would set a destination.

The car would then make turns and react to other vehicles and pedestrians based on computer programs that predict what others might do, and data from sensors including radar and cameras that read in real time what other objects are actually doing.

The route might be set by typing a destination into a map or using spoken commands, Chris Urmson, the leader of Google’s self-driving car team, told reporters Wednesday.

The car will be powered by electricity and could go about 100 miles before charging. Its shape suggests a rounded-out Volkswagen Beetle – something that might move people around a corporate campus or congested downtown – with headlights and sensors arrayed to resemble a friendly face.

Major automakers have steadily introduced technology that helps cars stay in their lanes and avoid accidents. However, all those vehicles come with a steering wheel and pedals – and the expectation that a driver will jump in should trouble arise.

Several companies have said they expect by 2020 to market vehicles that can drive themselves under certain conditions.

Immigration delay ups the ante on Obama, GOP

By JOSH LEDERMAN and ERICA WERNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – When President Barack Obama announced he was looking for ways to ease deportations without going through Congress, Republicans called it a case study in overreach, arguing that it’s Obama – not Republicans – who is undermining prospects for an immigration overhaul by proving he can’t be trusted to enforce the law.

Now as a narrow summertime window opens in which Congress could act on immigration, Obama is working to turn the tables on Republicans.

He’s holding off any executive actions on deportation in hopes that Republicans will bear all the blame if that window closes with the nation’s immigration system no closer to being fixed.

It’s an election-year gambit with the potential to backfire: By asking for patience yet again from frustrated immigration activists, Obama is driving up expectations about actions he’ll take if the fight in Congress ultimately fails.

“It’s an audacious strategy,” Democratic pollster Celinda Lake said. “But it has some downsides to it too.”

Two months after Obama commissioned a review of how deportations in America can be more humane, the White House announced Tuesday that Obama had asked his homeland security secretary, Jeh Johnson, to hold off on releasing the results of that review until August. That’s when lawmakers leave Washington to focus on campaigning ahead of the November elections.

White House officials said the delay is intended to give the GOP as much breathing room as possible to maneuver now that most GOP primaries are over, freeing incumbent Republicans from concerns about challenges from conservatives who oppose an immigration overhaul.

Yet Obama’s allies also hope that by holding off on controversial steps to ease deportations, Democrats can keep the focus squarely on the failure of Republicans and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to bring immigration to a vote.

“Giving the Republicans space takes away their final excuse,” said Jim Wallis, president of Christian social justice group Sojourners. “It’s all now focused on John Boehner.”

up the pressure on (Obama) to not only to take executive action, but to make it big and bold,” said Frank Sharry of the pro-immigrant group America’s Voice. “Otherwise, the president will undercut the historic opportunity presented by Republican inaction to once and for all cement the allegiances of immigrant voters in favor of Democrats.”

Laying the blame squarely at Republicans’ feet could motivate dispirited Latino voters, who tend to favor Democrats, in a midterm election in which Obama has warned repeatedly that the biggest hazard for his party is that Democrats won’t show up to vote. At the same time, some immigration groups and Democrats – including Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill. – have lost patience and already are balking at Obama’s delay.

Abortion restrictions take root in South California rampage shows gaps in mental health law

JACKSON, Miss. – From Texas to Alabama, laws are being enacted that would greatly restrict access to abortion, forcing many women to travel hundreds of miles to find a clinic. The laws, requiring abortion doctors to have privileges to admit patients to local hospitals, could have a profound impact on women in poor and rural sections of the Bible Belt.

In many places in the South, clinic doctors come from out of state to perform abortions and don’t have ties to a local hospital. Critics say the laws mean hospitals, leery of attracting anti-abortion protesters, could get veto power over whether the already-scarce clinics remain in business. They say the real aim is to outlaw abortions while supporters say they are protecting women’s health.

The laws are the latest among dozens of restrictions on abortions that states have enacted in the past two decades, including 24-hour waiting periods, parental consent and ultrasound requirements.

The requirements are already in effect in Texas and Tennessee. Laws in Mississippi and Alabama are on hold during court challenges. The Center for Reproductive Rights says besides the South, other states with the laws are in the Midwest or the West – Kansas, North Dakota, Utah and in Wisconsin, where it is being challenged in court this week.

LOS ANGELES – Elliot Rodger’s murderous rampage near Santa Barbara has tragically exposed the limitations of involuntary-commitment laws that allow authorities to temporarily confine people who are deemed a danger to themselves or others.

Three weeks before he stabbed and shot six people to death and then apparently took his own life, the 22-year-old sometime college student was questioned by sheriff’s deputies outside his apartment and was able to convince them he was calm, courteous and no threat to anyone. The officers had been sent by local health officials after Rodger’s family expressed concern about him.

“He just didn’t meet the criteria for any further intervention,” Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “He was able to make a very convinc-

ing story that there was no problem, that he wasn’t going to hurt himself or anyone else.”

Like many other states, California has a law intended to identify and confine dangerously unstable people before they can do harm. It allows authorities to hold people in a mental hospital for up to 72 hours for observation.

To trigger it, there must be evidence a person is suicidal, intent on hurting others or so “gravely disabled” as to be unable to care for himself.

Police and medical personnel make tens of thousands of such welfare checks in California annually. In the year that ended June 2012, nearly 126,000 people were placed on temporary mental health holds in California.

In Rodger’s case, it’s not clear whether the law was too porous, if deputies were inadequately trained or if they simply weren’t provided enough information to ferret out how deeply troubled Rodger had become.

It’s a place where police officers won’t even accept freebies from burger joints. It’s been ranked the world’s least corrupt nation for eight years straight by the watchdog group Transparency International.

Recent scandals in business, politics and sports, however, may put that reputation under threat. Some observers say the South Pacific nation’s sterling record for fairness may have made it complacent and less watchful for shady behavior.

Perhaps the biggest blow to the national psyche comes from bribery allegations against several top cricket players.

DONETSK, Ukraine – As separatists conceded that militants from Russia’s province of Chechnya had joined the rebellion, a Ukrainian government official cautioned Wednesday that its borders had become a “front line” in the crisis.

Chechnya’s Moscow-backed strongman brushed away allegations he had dispatched paramilitary forces under his command to Ukraine, saying he was powerless to stop fellow Chechens from joining the fight.

While there is no immediate indication that the Kremlin is enabling or supporting combatants from Russia crossing into Ukraine, Mos-

cow may have to dispel suspicions it is waging a proxy war if it is to avoid more Western sanctions.

In a wide-ranging foreign policy speech at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, President Barack Obama addressed the crisis in Ukraine by saying, “Russia’s recent actions recall the days when Soviet tanks rolled into Eastern Europe.”

The Kremlin welcomed the election Sunday of billionaire Petro Poroshenko as the president of Ukraine. An advocate of strong ties with Europe, Poroshenko also favors mending relations with Russia.

He replaced the pro-Moscow leader who was driven from office in February. That ouster led to Russia’s annex-

ing the way for the likely training and possibly equipping of moderate rebels fighting to oust Assad.

Nevertheless, Assad has insisted on holding elections amid the carnage, running against two little-known candidates seen as symbolic contenders. He has maintained significant support among large sections of the population, particularly among Christians, Alawites and other religious minorities. That support has been reinforced as Islamic militants gained more strength among the rebels fighting to topple him.

Assad is a member of the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, while the overwhelming majority of rebels are Sunni Muslims.

Bassem Zammam, a 45-year-old Syrian sculptor who arrived in Sweden as a refugee 45 days ago, said he voted for Assad “not because I like Assad, but because I like Syria.”

“I like stability, I like [the safety] that we missed because of those savages,” Zammam said, adding that he initially supported the rebels but changed his view because he felt they weren’t really seeking freedom.

In Sweden, which has received some 30,000 Syrian asylum seekers since 2011, Syrians from opposing sides of the conflict gathered outside the embassy in Stockholm to express their views and cast their ballots.

Manufacturers to recruit young Manufacturers across the United States are working with schools and colleges to let young people know that manufacturing jobs can be the key to lifetime careers and a high quality of life.

Earlier generations of Americans sought out manufacturing jobs. They came for the pay, the benefits and the relative security of industry.

All those things still are important features, but somewhere along the way young people came to see manufacturing sites as dirty, uncomfortable, dangerous and boring. Those perceptions were based in large part on television and movie scenes from a bygone era.

Meanwhile, manufacturing had moved in many cases to climate controlled buildings with computerized systems, 3-D printers, and the need for creative and skilled employees.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez has called on businesses and educators to join with government in getting that message out.

There’s a certain urgency in getting this message out. Manufacturers are losing many of their most skilled employees as the baby boomer generation retires. A 2011 industry report estimated that as many as 600,000 manufacturing jobs were vacant that year because employers couldn’t find the skilled workers to fill them, including machinists, distributors, technicians and industrial engineers. Nationwide, employers reported last year that skilled trades positions were the most difficult to fill, the fourth consecutive year this category has topped the list, according to the 2013 Manpower Group talent survey.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average manufacturing worker in the United States earned $77,505 in 2012.

If wages are not enough to lure younger workers, school officials hope that the lure of challenging and creative high-tech jobs will.

Millions of young computing enthusiasts could find that manufacturing jobs will let them pursue what they love, with a well-paying career thrown in as a bonus.

Marriage debates, a slippery slope at Notre Dame The National Catholic Register broke the most shocking cultural news of the week: “A group of students at the University of Notre Dame has generated a campus wide controversy by advocating that marriage between one woman and one man is better suited for children than same-sex ‘marriage.’ ” Welcome to campus controversy, 2014, where the subversives are traditionalists and, as we will see, the subversives control the establishment.

The Register continued: “The group – known as Students for Child Oriented Policy (SCOP) – elicited negative letters to the campus newspaper and prompted hundreds of students to sign a petition calling upon the university not to recognize it as an official campus club.”

What comes next may not be surprising, but it remains gasp-worthy: Notre Dame refused to recognize the group favoring what we now know as “traditional marriage” as an official

VIEWS Diana West campus club. Why? The administration offered a thin excuse, saying the new club would duplicate the mission of two other campus groups that promote Catholic doctrine – one of which, it turns out, hasn’t updated its website since 2005. Meanwhile, according to SCOP’s prospective president Tiernan Kane, his group doesn’t identify itself with a specifically Catholic mission, coming together instead as a nonsectarian effort to “focus on public policy as it relates to issues that specifically affect children.”

The Register reported that planned club activities would have included “presentations on Common Core and Indiana education policy, marijuana’s effect on young people’s brains, the United Kingdom’s anti-pornography policy and the

problems associated with no-fault divorce.” The club’s position that traditional marriage is good policy is what drew campus fire.

There’s a lot here, so let’s take it from the top. First, we have just learned that on the campus of one of the leading Catholic universities in the country, the concept of samesex marriage isn’t just popular, it’s entrenched to the point where it is controversial to prefer the traditional model – even to argue that heterosexual marriage is better social policy for children. In fact, the belief that a child is better off with a mother and a father rather than two mothers or two fathers is so unpopular that 630 students signed their names on a petition to prevent it from being promoted as an official campus club.

So much for the ancient consensus on heterosexual monogamy from which Western civilization evolved.

That’s out the window at Notre Dame. Indeed, the Register further

Once upon a time, of course, heterosexual marriage didn’t require a university president or anyone else to make a “clear stand.” Today, a leading Catholic academic doesn’t want to come out as its supporter, let alone advocate.

This topsy-turvy episode at Notre Dame marks another defeat in what used to be thought of as the culture wars. Once again, elites have deserted the religious and societal bastions even as foot soldiers still maneuver. What is even more dispiriting to watch than the increasing “inclusion” of homosexual and lesbian unions in the definition of marriage – and I expect one day that polygamous and perhaps even incestuous unions will similarly be normalized – is the demonization of traditional belief.

The Register story went on to describe a conference SCOP staged last month on the definition and importance of marriage, featur-

ing conservative legal and religious experts. “Prior to the event,” the newspaper reports, “a SCOP member wrote a letter to a campus newspaper, The Observer, asking that students approach the April 3 conference and SCOP with an open mind, in the same manner as they approached” the attempts to found Notre Dame’s gay-straight alliance club, PrismND, in 2012.” PrismND is Notre Dame’s GLBTQ group. (The acronym stands for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer.)

Notre Dame has an open mind, all right – at least when it comes to the GLBTQ group.

That club received official club status. Not so SCOP. “It’s the new political correctness,” explained Patrick Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society, a traditional Catholic group. “Very often the same students who scream censorship in nearly every other instance are the ones who would silence those who promote Catholic teachings. Those who advocate difficult teachings are shunned or ridiculed.”

The best and brightest call that progress.

JOLIET – Wednesday’s Joliet West Regional final featured a team experiencing its most successful season ever against a squad whose best days figure to be in the future.

Plainfield Central’s special campaign looked to be in jeopardy after youthful Joliet Catholic won the opener, but the Wildcats were determined to not let things end just yet.

Central responded by taking the middle set and then grabbing a big lead and holding off a Hilltopper rally in the final set to win, 18-25, 2519, 25-20, and capture its first regional title.

The Wildcats (26-10) advance to Friday’s Bolingbrook Sectional, where they’ll see Plainfield North for the fourth time this season, in a 7 p.m. semifinal match.

“Coach [Joe] Kelly and I knew that we had to be able to make the adjustments after the first game,” Wildcats coach Alex Hurlburt said.

“Credit goes to our players since they took exactly what we told them that they needed to do and they got it done.

This experience is surreal for our whole team. This is my first opportunity to coach in the IHSA and the guys have made it really easy for me since they’re all adaptable and they learn very quickly.

We knew that this was one of the more-stacked regionals, so getting through it is a big step.”

In the third set, the Wildcats jumped out to a decisive 15-5 advantage following six straight points, which came courtesy of two combined blocks by Noah Randall (34 assists) and Kyle Oehler (seven kills, two blocks), single kills from Gage Wuestenfeld (nine kills, two blocks), Oehler and Randall and an ace from Tyler Spangler.

Although the Hilltoppers (22-15) faced a huge hole to dig out of, they managed to stage a comeback, closing

“We’ve been really good in Game 1 but we just never could nail down how to take out Game 2,” JCA coach Rhyen Staley said. “Obviously, they did some stuff to get better and we strayed away from the game plan a little bit, which is part of the learning process with a lot of young kids on the floor. We had a first-year player in the middle [Jason Turley], Ben [Gabor] is only a sophomore and this is the first year of running the show for our setter [Aron Goeken]. We started to fight in game three but just didn’t have enough time left.”

Goeken handed out 26 assists with the majority of those going to Blake Reardon, who finished with a matchhigh 18 kills. The Wildcats got a similarly-strong performance from Tom Poznanski (15 kills, two blocks, four

“We knew coming in that this was the farthest that our school had ever been and we were making history, so we played our hearts out [Wednesday] and left everything on the court,” Randall

said. “After the first game, our coaches told us to fix our blocking on [Reardon] and play with more intensity and heart, and we did that. I love these coaches so much and we just work really hard every day in practice and also give it everything that we’ve got.”

The Wildcats couldn’t

slow down Reardon in the opener, but did a much better job of that in the second set before the Hilltopper sophomore helped to spark his team’s late comeback.

But instead of watching their memorable season conclude, Central bounced back in the middle set, with Poznanski leading the way, and rode that momentum the rest of the match.

“We thought that they were going to come out strong and unfortunately our serve-receive and blocking was a little off,” Poznanski said. “We knew we had to make the adjustments and I wanted to see the team play with energy, and I thought that we did, and it translated well into the last two games.

We didn’t win a conference championship, but we had never won a regional title, and that changed today. We just want to keep on making history.”

He hated it.

Walters pitched a superb game and had Joliet on the cusp of a split of Wednesday night’s doubleheader against the Washington Wild Things at Silver Cross Field.

The Slammers (5-6) were leading 2-0, but the Wild Things loaded the bases against Walters in the sev-

enth and final inning on two walks and an infield single.

Manager Jeff Isom opted for closer Jordan Wellander, and the move did not work this time.

Wellander walked William Beckwith, who batted for Joliet Catholic graduate Nick Ratajczak, to force in a run and make it 2-1. Daniel Poma followed with a tworun double into the left-field corner for a 3-2 lead.

The Slammers got Max Casper to second base with one out in the bottom of the seventh but could not push him across, and 3-2 is the way it ended, one of the toughest losses to stomach so far

this season. That came after Washington (7-4) completed a 6-2 victory in the game that was suspended in the fourth inning Tuesday.

Before the fateful seventh, it was all Walters. The Slammers’ ace allowed one hit, Maxx Garrett’s one-out single in the fourth, over the first six innings. The closest the Wild Things came to a threat was in the fourth, when Ratajczak’s sacrifice moved a runner into scoring position with one out, and a two-out error prolonged the inning.

The Slammers scored a run in the first inning, and it appeared that’s all Walters would need. With the bases loaded and one out, Grant DeBruin shot a rocket at

left fielder CJ Beatty, whose leaping, backhanded catch prevented DeBruin from clearing the bases. Instead, he settled for a sacrifice fly, and Washington left-hander Tim Flight worked out of further trouble.

The Slammers added insurance in the eighth, scoring a run on a throwing error, the Wild Things’ second miscue of the inning, the first being second baseman Ratajczak’s boot of a ground ball.

Marquis Riley finished with two of the Slammers’ four hits and DeBruin singled in addition to his first-inning sacrifice fly that nearly was so much more.

pended game.

The game that began before the deluge rolled in Tuesday night continued from the fourth inning with Washington leading, 6-1.

Neither side was able to produce much offense in the final six innings. The Wild Things had two hits, the Slammers three in that span. If Joliet had thoughts of putting together a comeback, three Wild Things double plays helped put them to rest.

The only run in the latter half of that game came when the Slammers’ Russell Modelnhauer doubled home a run in the bottom of the eighth. Isom used a quartet of relievers to finish that game and they all were solid.

Nick Ratajczak returned home with an .053 batting average (1 for 19).

The Washington Wild Things second baseman admittedly was pressing in his first taste of professional ball in the independent Frontier League. Then again, true to form, he had struck out only once.

Those of us who watched Ratajczak from the time he was a youngster playing at St. Joe’s Park through his senior season at Joliet Catholic, when he led the Hilltoppers to the 2009 Class 3A state championship and earned Herald-News Player of the Year accolades, figured the slow start would not last.

Ratajczak got his second hit of the season and went 1 for 3 with a walk in Tuesday’s suspended game that was completed Wednesday. He began the regularly scheduled game with a perfect sacrifice bunt before taking a called third strike in his second at-bat.

He is the epitome of a grinder. He works hard at the game. It’s always been that way and always will be.

“I was pressing a little in my first few professional games,” Ratajczak said. “I barreled up a few and had a couple good, quality at-bats, but wasn’t doing it consistently. You need confidence and consistency in this game.”

“He’s a gamer. He comes to play every day,” Ratajczak’s manager, former Slammers manager Bart Zeller, said. “He is everything we thought he would be when we signed him. He just needs a few to fall in and he’ll be OK. Sometimes the transition to pro ball does not happen immediately.”

Even with the slow start offensively, though, Ratajczak still flashes the leather.

“He turns double plays as well as anyone I have seen for a long time,” Zeller said.

Ratajczak enjoyed two big seasons at Florida Gulf Coast

Community College, then went on to become an All-Big East second baseman in a two-season stint at Louisville, which played in the College World Series last spring. He received a call from the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization and had hopes of being drafted, but it didn’t happen.

“It was kind of disappointing not getting drafted,” Ratajczak said. “But I got hurt. It was the worst timing.”

He injured a shoulder in a collision with a teammate at practice shortly before the CWS. His only appearance at Omaha was as a pinch-hitter, but he was there.

“The trip to Omaha was what we wanted from Day 1,” he said. “The experience of being there still was unbelievable even though I was hurt.

“As soon as we got back from the World Series, I started rehabbing in Louisville.

I spent all of last summer there.”

His Cardinals’ teammate, Stewart Ijames, is on the Wild Things’ roster. He came to town hitting .436 and launched his second home run in Tuesday’s suspended game.

“I didn’t ever picture playing here at Silver Cross Field against [the Slammers],” Ratajczak said. “I wouldn’t have minded playing here with them.

“Washington needed a second baseman, though, and Stewart mentioned my name.

They showed interest and I signed with them.”

Washington is near Pittsburgh, much like Joliet is in the Chicago area. Ratajczak said it’s a nice place to play and learn the pro game.

“I’d definitely say I had a successful college career,” he said. “Here, it’s on a different level. I have to slow the game down.

“I compare playing here to playing at a high-level juco, in a way. You get a lot of good exposure. People are saying this compares to High-A, so there’s good talent here.”

Ratajczak said the pitching he has faced in the Frontier League is similar to what he saw when he played at Florida Gulf Coast and Louisville.

The Class 4A Lockport Regional semifinal Wednesday at Lockport had all the makings of a game where one big hit, one big play, would decide it.

The game did not disappoint. Dylan Rosa’s two-run double down the left-field line highlighted a four-run bottom of the fifth inning and gave Providence the lead for good in a 4-2 victory.

The Celtics (22-14), the No. 6 seed in the sectional, advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. regional final against Brother Rice.

Lockport (19-17), the No. 9 seed, had just grabbed a 2-0 lead on Anthony Cocco’s twoout, two-run double in the top of the fifth. But Providence responded, getting five hits in six at-bats while scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Mike Madey’s single drove in the insurance run to make it 4-2, and Celtics coach Mark Smith said small ball also was huge.

“Zach Pych’s bunt single was big, and the wild pitch that scored our first run seemed to loosen us up,” he said. “Dylan (Rosa) is our best hitter, and he came up with the huge hit.

“I’m extremely proud of how we answered after they scored. Those were two very good teams going at it.”

Rosa said his intention was

to get the bat on the ball. “[Masa] is a great pitcher,” he said. “I wanted to be a leader, and he threw me a pitch on 2-and-2 that I could handle.

Thankfully it went down the line.”

Godfrey went the distance, allowing six hits. He struck out eight, walked one and hit one. Masa left after Rosa’s tworun double. He allowed one hit before the fateful fifth inning and escaped a bases-loaded situation in the second.

“He’s a good pitcher, no, a great pitcher,” Godfrey said of Masa. “That was a huge hit Dylan (Rosa) got off him. That was exactly the situation we wanted, bases loaded with him coming up.”

The Indians had turned a one-out double play after an infield error and were about to bat in their half of the ninth when Vogrin made his gesture.

“Those guys got my back 100 percent,’’ he said. “I was just waiting for the right time, the right moment. I knew sooner or later they’d score.’’

In a duel between Division I-bound pitchers, Christian Sanchez stroked a game-ending, bases-loaded hit to left-center Wednesday night to give Minooka a 2-1 semifinal win over Plainfield South in the Cougars’ Class 4A regional.

Minooka (25-6) advances to Saturday’s title game to play the winner of Thursday’s semifinal between Joliet West and Bradley.

“With the bases loaded,

I knew the pressure was on them,’’ said Sanchez, who was 3-for-4. “I was looking for a pitch to hit, for a fastball. With 3-2, the odds of me getting a fastball were high. Got it elevated and tried to drive it.’’

It drove home Kenny Walsh, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Jake Null then reached on a well-placed bunt and Neal Tyrell was intentionally walked.

Vogrin, an Illinois State recruit, said he threw between 115 to 120 pitches. He allowed four singles, struck out six and walked five, all free passes coming in the first four innings.

“This is the most I’ve thrown all year,’’ Vogrin said.

“Actually, I think that’s the longest in my life. This whole season I’ve been building up to it. I threw 90 pitches about a month ago.’’

“Mitch threw a great game,’’ Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said. “He got himself in a lot of trouble, but he got himself out of quite a few jams.

The kid is nothing but heart and guts. He really dug deep.

“I looked at him in the sev-

enth and the eighth and the ninth. I keep looking for him to say ‘I think I’m done.’ He just kept saying ‘Give me the ball.’

Plainfield South coach Phil Bodine feels the same about his ace, Trevor Henderson.

The Ball State-bound lefthander pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts before yielding to Ryan McQueen.

“Trevor pitched a great game, along with their young man,’’ Bodine said.

Plainfield South’s Zach Hamaker opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first that scored Nick Mayerhofer, who walked on four pitches to start the game.

Vogrin walked the bases loaded to start the third, but recorded three straight outs – strikeout, a forceout at home and a groundout.

“You have to think that the bases are empty,’’ Vogrin said. “You just got to think nothing’s on the bases, throw strikes, maybe get a groundout. That’s basically my mentality.’’

“We got the big hit and they came back,” he said. “Those

are marks of two great teams facing each other. We were facing a top-round draft pick [Godfrey] who is going to LSU and we hung right in there with him.

“Two teams were really fighting it out. If there was anything disappointing, it’s that we couldn’t get them out in the bottom of the fifth. We can’t let them come back like that.”

Cocco and Lorenzo Blazekovich had two hits each for Lockport. Providence had five of its six hits in the fifth inning and no Celtic finished with two.

Cubs avoid being no-hit, still lose

By ANTONIO GONZALEZ The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO – The Cubs proved again Wednesday that they have at least been good at one thing besides mostly losing the last 50 years: breaking up no-hitters.

John Baker’s single with one out in the seventh against reliever Jeremy Affeldt accounted for one of two hits in the Cubs’ 5-0 loss to the Giants.

Anthony Rizzo had the other in the eighth.

Baker’s ball cleared the right side of the infield to help the Cubs extend the longest streak in the majors without being no-hit. The last time it happened to them was 1965, when Sandy Koufax pitched a perfect game for the Dodgers.

“What’s the cliche? It’s a game of inches,” Baker said.

“I think the Chicago Cubs are proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that baseball’s a game of inches.”

CHICAGO – Moises Sierra drove in the winning run with a single in the ninth inning, and the White Sox beat the Indians, 3-2, Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep.

The Sox’s Hector Noesi and Cleveland’s T.J. House each came through with dominant

starts. The Sox came away with their seventh win in 10 games.

The Indians had just scored a run in the top of the ninth off Ronald Belisario (3-3) when the Sox answered in the bottom half against Bryan Shaw.

Church to hold barbecue to support restoration project

dunland@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – At a meeting to discuss ways to raise money to restore the sanctuary of Grace Episcopal Church, Ken Hermanson of Mokena proposed an unusual fundraiser: “Let’s have a barbecue.”

And then Ken called his son, Jason Hermanson, to let him know he’d been volunteered to help.

Certainly Ken knew one barbecue would not raise enough money to complete the project – estimated at $100,000 – but it could start the process. For many years, Ken and Jason had smoked meat for gatherings of about 60 family and friends, and those guests always enjoyed the food, he said. Why not take their efforts one step further and help the church?

“For a donation, people could eat with us,” Ken said Restoring the sanctuary – its colored glass and altar area – to its original appearance is important, Vicar Ellen Ekevag said, because Grace Episcopal Church is the oldest church building in continuous use in New Lenox. The church even has a vintage photo of a horse and buggy next to the building that proves it, she said.

“We’re trying to be good stewards of this historic space,” Ekevag said. “I think the history of this church is part of what makes it authentic, not just to the church but to New Lenox. We’re just honoring who we are and valuing that tradition.”

Founded as a congregation in 1868, church members purchased the land the following year for $45 and constructed the building in a rare style known as Prairie Gothic, Ekevag said. This means Grace Episcopal Church has traditional-looking building (Gothic) with a small sanctuary (Prairie).

“We don’t have stained glass windows. We have painted windows,” Ekevag said. “We recently realized that, underneath the carpet

Restoration projects would include updating the electrical, using light choices to reflect the style of 1869; refinishing the pews; repairing any damages to the wood and to the floors; and assessing care of the windows, Ekevag said

“Which, of course, is expensive,” Ekevag said. “Not many people are experts in painted glass.”

Ekevag agreed with Ken. One fundraiser will not provide all the required money, but Ekevag is confident that, with careful planning and additional benefits in the future, the Grace Episcopal Church will meet its goals.

“I have a very good group

of people on the committee,” Ekevag said.

Ken, of course, is one of them. Unlike many people who smoke meat, Ken’s entrance into the hobby had less to do with enjoying food preparation and more with his career.

Ken works for Mako Metals, a steel distribution company, he said. One of the company’s clients is Brinkmann, a manufacturer of smokers and grills, he added.

Curiosity led Ken to purchase one of Brinkmann’s smokers in 1990. Jason started using it, too, so Ken bought him one. Finally, they splurged on a smoker large enough to hold pork roasts, beef roasts, turkeys, bacon and vegetables – all at the same time, Ken said.

For the church barbecue, Ken plans to place peppers and onions into the cooker alongside the 100 pounds of pork shoulders.

“They won’t stay on as long,” Ken said, “but people

can chop the up for salsa.”

Through experimentation over the years, Ken found that fruit wood chunks (he especially likes apple and pecan, with a bit of cherry) produced the best results. They lasted longer than briquettes and chips, and didn’t overpower the flavor of the meat as its stronger-scented hickory wood cousin did, Ken said.

Ken is anticipating the meat will need 12 hours of smoking, so he and Jason will prepare the meat the day before the event and keep it moist with a light vinegar-based sauce. Several brands of traditional barbecue sauce will be available at serving time, but Ken is betting many patrons won’t use them.

“The meat has a flavor all its own,” Ken said. “Sometimes the sauce will overwhelm the taste.”

Jason was happy to help with the fundraiser for two reasons. He’s in favor of restoring the church, which he called “a really cool place,” especially since he lives “right around the corner.”

But Jason also said he enjoys the hours-long process of smoking. He and his wife, Cathy, created and fine-tuned a spice blend that includes peppers, paprika and cumin, which Jason and Ken will use on the pork shoulders for the church barbecue.

“I enjoy putting everything in at the right time and building flavor,” Jason said. “In the end, if it’s done correctly, you’re like, ‘Wow! This turned out really well.’ ”

No stopping Team Green at St. Mary Nativity JOLIET – Team Green, St. Mary Nativity’s Science Club, recently completed another successful year. Last year, the team had 26 members, but this year the team grew to 53 dedicated members.

After collecting, weighing and recycling plastic bags from October 2013 through April 2014, the group was announced as the winner of the trex plastic bag recycling contest at the Will County Environmental Day at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet on May 7.

The school will receive another park bench. The school also received a plaque and an award, which are displayed in the school office. It also received another ribbon to add to its Earth Day flag, which is displayed in the junior high hallway.

Team Green held several school and parish recycling events throughout the year.

The students helped collect and crush aluminum cans. More than $150 has been raised through the aluminum can recycling.

The newspaper collection bins have also raised more than $400 for the parish. These bins are in the north parking lot of the church.

The clothing drive sponsored

by USAgain during the month of April was a huge success. They ranked 8th in Illinois and 19th overall. They also receive money for these donations.

The bins are next to the newspaper bins in the north parking lot of the church. The Sunny D collection at the beginning of the year allowed the school to order 60 new books for the school library.

Homer Glen resident wins Father Aquinas Award ROMEOVILLE – Elizabeth Lorang of Homer Glen received the Father Aquinas Colgan Award

during the Lewis University undergraduate commencement ceremony in May. This special recognition is awarded to a graduating senior at each of the university’s undergraduate commencement ceremonies in May and December.

Lorang graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. She earned a 3.96/4.0 cumulative GPA and credited her professors with her success.

Lorang is an active member of the Lewis community, serving as an EPIC retreat leader and LUMINATE service trip participant with University Ministry, a WLRA DJ and member of Psi Chi International Honor Society and the Lewis University Psychology Club. She also volunteered with Feed My Starving Children, MorningStar Mission and World Apostolate of Fatima.

Students are nominated for the Father Aquinas Colgan Award by University faculty and staff.

To be eligible, a student must be an undergraduate who has qualified for graduation, who is a four-year student of Lewis University with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who has demonstrated exemplary personal, intellectual and social development in the spirit of Lewis University’s mission.

A Lewis University tradition, the Father Aquinas Colgan Award has been presented to

an outstanding undergraduate student at the University’s commencement exercises since 1955.

The award recognizes students who have demonstrated personal and intellectual growth, a strong commitment to their faith, and a firm dedication to the Lasallian values of justice and association.

The award honors the memory of Father Aquinas Colgan, O. Carm., who was chaplain early in the university’s history. A U.S. Army chaplain during World War II, Colgan died May 6, 1945, while attempting to rescue a wounded corpsman.

He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for valor, becoming one of only seven chaplains to receive this honor in World War II. He had previously received the Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster for acts of heroism and for two earlier wounds. Colgan is remembered for his character, bravery and persistence in pursuing goals, and also for his deep personal faith.

SHOREWOOD – Once again the fourth-grade students at Holy Family School in Shorewood coordinated Holy Family’s recycling efforts for the school year.

The wall outside the fourth grade classroom is decorated with the Earth Flag and all the ribbons that they won this year.

The school collection, which ended April 15, consisted of plastic bags to be recycled.

Holy Family School came in third place in the Bag Recycling Challenge that is sponsored by Trex, a company that manufactures recycled lumber and other materials. Holy Family students brought in 1.6 pounds of plastic bags a student.

Additionally, the fourth grade received a bird house constructed out of lumber made from recycled plastic bags, which hangs in a tree outside the classroom.
