At Tuesday’s ad hoc buildings and grounds committee meeting, JJC board trustees learned the college’s lobbyist, Curry & Associates LLC, suggested college officials wait on moving forward with the project until the end of May so they can try to secure $10 million in state funding – previously suspended – before they fund it themselves. “[They] felt that it was a possibility that it could get all solved by then,” said JJC President Debra Daniels. “If

not, then we’re going to move forward. That’s the plan.”

“Let’s hope,” said Board trustee Michael O’Connell.

Daniels said state officials are reviewing the City Center campus project.

In April, the board approved using funding earmarked for other capital projects at the college to go toward interior work of the building after learning state officials placed $10 million in state funding under review.

State officials said the funding for the project was under review along with all other state spending.

JJC officials have said the state placing money promised for the project on hold would have consequences for other

capital projects at the college. Those projects include classroom renovations and computer and technology upgrades.

Exterior work to the building was completed last year, but JJC officials need to complete the interior work.

Board trustee Andy Mihelich has said JJC always had the money to complete the downtown building. But he had hoped the college would be reimbursed by the state when the funding became available.

The $10 million placed under review this year was from the $25.5 million in state funding promised for the project.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DIAMOND – Several residents showed up to Tuesday’s Village of Diamond board meeting to support Elijah Martinez and his idea to start a summer day camp for area children.

Mayor Terry Kernc, along with an investigator from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and Lisa Morel Las, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy counties, met with Martinez last week after it was brought to their attention that Martinez was operating a kid’s summer camp at no cost to residents that used the Big Brothers Big Sisters logo on the advertising. Martinez is not affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Kernc said Friday she told Martinez he couldn’t operate the camp on village property without appropriate safeguards in place.

Martinez was invited to the board meeting, where the board discussed licensing and permit regulations and fees in order for a summer camp to exist in the village.

During public comment, a parent spoke in favor of having a day camp. She said not every child has two parents in the home, and she felt such a program would benefit the area kids.

“Several of us are here to find out what we need to do to have a program for the children,” she said. “We’d like to see the kids safe and have something to do.”

Board members unanimously voted to pass an ordinance establishing comprehensive park rules and regulations.

“You identified a need the village has,” Kernc told Martinez. “Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I feel much better knowing we will have this in place.”

The ordinance outlines some general rules regarding hours of operation, restricted areas and use of playground equipment.

In addition, it prohibits alcoholic beverages, weapons, fireworks, smoking, public indecency, disorderly conduct, gambling, controlled substances, battery and posting of printed or written material without prior consent.

To receive a permit to utilize the village property for programs, like a day camp, the person or organization will need to file a written application, sign an indemnification and reimbursement agreement, and show proof of insurance.

Programs must be provided by adults older than 21, who must agree to a background check.

If the permit is denied, the village must provide a notice of denial stating why the permit was denied.

Jeff Johnson, a parent of one of the children who participated, said he agreed the village needs more programming for children, but asked Martinez why he lied about so many things.

“I can appreciate Elijah and all the kids had a good time,” he said during the meeting. “He might have a good heart to help others, but I want to know why he lied about Big Brothers Big Sisters.”

He asked what Martinez’s motives were.

Martinez said he has publicly apologized, but offered no answers.

During the JJC working session, Board Chair Jeff May proposed having a board finance committee to discuss spending. He said college officials have received questions on finance at JJC in the past, and he anticipates more questions in the future.

“I want to make sure that is a time that everybody who has a question can go somewhere to get their questions answered, and for everybody to have a really good handle in terms of how JJC spends their money,” May said.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Founder Mary Smelser said the Joliet Area Suzuki Strings music school just couldn’t sustain itself after enrollment dwindled the past couple of years.

The number of students dropped from 40 to 25 during the past two years. Several loyal families also moved from the area. So the school, called JASS, closed with a final concert April 30.

“As far as the actual program itself, that’s gone,” Smelser said.

Economic conditions and demographics within the Joliet area have changed, leading to fewer students in grade-school music programs also taking private lessons.

Joliet Public Schools District 86 Fine Arts Coordinator Jim Shaw said that is a shame.

“The sad fact is we have well over 1,300 students in the program, but a very small percentage take advantage of private lessons,” he said.

This has caused private teachers to alter the way they teach, and school districts to find ways to fill the gap private lessons traditionally filled.

Value of lessons

Several recent studies reinforce the common belief that music lessons at an early age help develop the brain.

A 2012 study by Northwestern University researchers found brain stem response in adults with musical training was “more robust” than in adults without it, suggesting a limited period of music lessons from ages 3 to 10 fundamentally alters a child’s neural development.

Another study published in the November 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry suggested musical training helps with the parts of the brain governing motor planning and coordination, visuospatial ability and emotion and impulse regulation.

While most Will County school districts have music

programs, individual instruction often isn’t possible within the group setting.

“We try to encourage private lessons as much as possible,” Shaw said. “In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was a requirement to take private lessons. The quality of the groups back then were way up there.”

Marcum has noticed more students took private lessons in those years than now. He said one reason for the change is the difficulty private teachers face in opening a studio and making it a consistent source of income.

There also are fewer music stores in and around the city.

“I took lessons at the Joliet Music Center on Ruby Street,” he said. “It’s not there anymore.”

Marcum said the decline in students taking private lessons is a topic music teachers discuss constantly, adding that Gompers music teachers try to

compensate with before-school sectionals.

“Nothing compares,” he said.

Joliet gives Preservation Award to USF

JOLIET – The city has given its annual Preservation Award to the University of St. Francis.

The Joliet Historic Preservation Commission recognized the university for its work on the Motherhouse on the USF campus and the old Mode Theater downtown.

The annual award was recognized last week in a resolution approved by the Joliet City Council.

The Mode Theater, built in 1908, was put back to use for USF classes last year and has been renamed the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center.

The Motherhouse, built in 1881, originally was home to the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, who founded the university. It also was the original location of St. Francis Academy, which evolved into Joliet Catholic Academy.

USF has worked at renovating the Motherhouse since 2005, and it now contains

The university converted the old Mode Theater to an academic building, and it was renamed after a donation was made to the university. university offices, classroom space, a cafe and even student housing.

“The last piece [of the renovation] is going to be finished

in the first week of June,” Elizabeth Laken, USF administration and finance vice president, told the City Council last week.

That last section is a small area being converted into offices, USF spokeswoman Nancy Pohlman said Tuesday.

“The Motherhouse has

such significance for us. It’s the home of our founding congregation,” Pohlman said.

USF invested $2.7 million in the Mode Theater after being approached by city officials about the university’s interest in expanding its presence downtown, she said. USF previously moved art and design classes into the Rialto Square Theatre office building.

Pohlman noted that the City Center Partnership, which promotes downtown business, last year recognized USF as Institution of the Year for its renovation of the Mode Theater.

“We’re very happy that people are recognizing our efforts to help the city grow,” she said.

Historic Preservation Commission Chairman Kevin Heinemann said both projects are examples of adaptive reuse of historic buildings in town.

“We took a tour of [the Mode building], and it was beautifully done,” Heinemann said. “It’s a historic building, and it’s going to be preserved because of their efforts.”

O’Dekirk pushes for Houbolt bridge project

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Houbolt Road bridge over the Des Plaines River in Joliet, long talked about as a possible solution to truck congestion, is getting a big push from new Mayor Bob O’Dekirk.

O’Dekirk had been mayor for two days when he told a group of residents gathered for a meeting about the effect a future Ikea distribution center will have on their neighborhood that he wanted to see the bridge built.

“I think this project needs some leadership. I’m hoping as the new mayor to provide that,” O’Dekirk said at the May 6 meeting.

Three weeks later, O’Dekirk is voicing confidence the project will become a reality.

“The chances are good. I think the principals are serious about stepping up,” O’Dekirk said. “I think you’re going to see some movement on this.”

The plan is to build the bridge with private and, probably, public money, turn it into a toll bridge, and earn a return on the investment through the tolls. The bridge would be built primarily as a route for trucks to Interstate 80 from the two intermodals in Joliet and Elwood O’Dekirk said he has discussed the project with private business people and

union representatives, as well as state and county officials, in his first weeks as mayor.

“Everyone is really interested in getting something done,” he said.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. agreed momentum is building for the project.

“I see that there are players that are coming together and looking for support for revitalizing the idea of building that bridge,” Walsh said.

County officials want to see the bridge because it would bring relief to Route 53, Walsh said.

“We’re going to have to make the hard decisions,” he said. “Otherwise, we’re behind the eight ball, trying to

push a huge number of trucks down a road, past a school, and onto Route 53 – a road that was never built for that number of trucks.”

The school Walsh referred to is Laraway School, which has seen a growing number of trucks driving past. It is located on Laraway Road near Route 53.

Just how the bridge gets paid for remains an issue.

O’Dekirk would not identify the private businesses willing to take part.

CenterPoint Properties, which built the two industrial parks around the intermodals, is an obvious candidate. In response to questions from The Herald-News, CenterPoint Chief Development

Officer Michael Murphy issued a written statement saying the bridge “would lessen the interaction between trucks and passenger vehicles on local roads.”

But Murphy made no specific commitment to funding the bridge.

O’Dekirk said state officials are interested in the project because they recognize economic development in Will County “is one of the best things going in the state of Illinois.

“I think everyone understands that we can’t get to a situation where the companies are getting choked off because the infrastructure is not there and the businesses stop coming here.”

Will County spelling bee winner prepares for national competition JOLIET – Will County’s representative in the Scripps National Spelling Bee has spent a lot of time preparing for the competition, which starts Wednesday.

“I’ve been looking at some books made for spelling bee contestants,” said Summit Kumar, seventh-grader at Troy Middle School. “I’ve looked at SAT prep books for [vocabulary]. I read 60 pages of those books about six to eight hours every day.”

Kumar won the Will County Regional Office of Education Spelling Bee on March 5 to qualify for the national tournament.

His family is in Washington, D.C., to cheer him on as he tries to qualify for the semifinals.

Summit said he has spent almost a third of each day studying his spelling and vocabulary since winning the Will County tournament on the word “inexplicable.”

“Nervousness is not as much of a problem as the test itself,” Summit said about the qualifying tests he has to take before the final rounds, which will be telecast on ESPN. “The vocabulary part of it is something I never liked,” he said. “If those preliminary tests were all spelling, I would ace it.

But the definitions don’t go as well. I’m trying to fix that.”

Summit has a busy life beyond spelling and school. He is part of the Exxon-Mobil Shoot for A’s program, which works on projects, such as creating so-

He also plays shooting guard for a basketball team associated with Upward Sports, tutors for Kumon Learning Center and is part of the Mathletes and Scholastic Bowl teams at Troy.

“Everybody has been wishing me luck,” Summit said about other students at Troy.

“Some teachers said I was becoming a celebrity. I think that’s cool.”

Summit’s father, Vinod Kumar, said he wasn’t nervous about how well Summit will do.

“He’s been lucky enough to be at this level,” Kumar said.

“He’s studying and working hard, whatever results come.”

Kumar also said this tournament isn’t the last opportunity for Summit, who also may be eligible to compete next year as an eighth-grader.

He has spent the past three months getting ready for a long run at the spelling bee.

“I don’t want to expect anything out of myself, but I want to reach the finals,” Summit said. “My goal right now is to reach the semifinals.”

JOLIET – A new survey suggests Illinois may soon face a shortage of registered nurses as more baby boomers prepare to retire.

Nearly 53,000 registered nurses, or about 31 percent of the state’s RN population, were surveyed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

According to the survey, about one-third of RNs ages 55 to 65 or older intend to retire within the next five years, leaving potential voids in specialties such as psychiatric, school, home health and community care, according to the state agency.

Ensuring there are enough nurses to meet the state’s health care needs is a priority for both Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and local universities, such as the University of St. Francis and Lewis University, said Jackie Medland, RN, regional chief nursing officer with Presence Saint Joseph.

But such a shortage will likely have a greater effect on

areas of the state with smaller populations and fewer educational offerings, she added.

“It’s not a universal truth that all hospitals will struggle,” Medland said.

Janet Long, spokeswoman for Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, said the Morris hospital has historically offered scholarships, not only to students pursuing nursing degrees, but to those entering the health care industry in general.

“We try to encourage more people into this field,” Long said.

Long said the Morris hospital remains aware of specialties at the hospital – critical care and surgery – where there’s a significant percentage of nurses nearing retirement age. The goal is to prevent critical shortages, she said.

In the future, there will be fewer RNs ages 25 to 35 in the doctoral education pipeline to replace retirees as specialties see an increase in retirements, according to the state agency.

Medland said the Joliet hospital is keenly aware of specialty departments at the hospital – surgical and behavioral health, for example – where there’s a

significant percentage of nurses nearing retirement age.

“Whether you have that strong partnership with universities, and whether you have an attractive site makes a boatload of difference,” Medland said.

Jane Trainor, assistant professor and coordinator of one of Lewis University’s accelerated nursing degree programs, said Lewis offers a wide range of options for nursing degrees, with rolling enrollment.

Trainor said the university offers an accelerated Bachelor’s-to-BSN program designed for people with a bachelor’s degree considering a career change. Students can obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing in as little as 18 months, Trainor said.

“It’s intense, time-wise, but those programs [across the U.S.] have helped alleviate shortages,” Trainor said.

Medland noted that despite the looming shortage, there are more registered nurses in today’s workforce than in past years. According to IDFPD data, the number of licensed RNs statewide increased from 142,644 in 2001 to 177,614 in 2015.

Pair looks to bring military museum to Wilmington

By MARY BASKERVILLE Shaw Media correspondent WILMINGTON – A young boy growing up in Ohio saw how his father treasured an old French bayonet. Later, during the Great Depression, he learned the value of taking care of his toys.

Speaking many years later, R. Fred Rolsten said his plans for creating a museum are probably rooted in those memories. His passion for preserving the country’s heritage is simple, he said: It’s a way to help young people understand the sacrifices made for their freedom and liberty.

A search for a permanent location for his collection of artifacts from World War I, World War II and other eras led to a site just above Forked Creek, on historic Route 66, just as it curves into Wilmington. The site includes a 25,000-square-foot building, originally constructed as a church, but never used.

City Administrator Tony Graff pitched the location to Rolsten and Ron J. Niess.

The site offers everything the men have sought: 20 acres for a display of tanks and outdoor equipment, room to house a mobile mu-

seum and plenty of display space inside.

Rolsten, who serves as president and executive director of Heritage Collection Museum Inc., hopes the museum’s collection will spark people’s interest in and understanding of U.S. history through military memorabilia, oral histories and artifacts. One focus is on equipment used to keep warriors alive, Rolsten said.

The two men plan to bring a half-size replica of the Atlantis Space Shuttle that will offer a chance for visitors to participate as one of 14 crew members on simulated takeoffs and landings.

“It will feel like you’re part of it,” Rolsten said. “You can have those experiences.”

The museum also will include other aircraft simulators.

“We need the machines because that’s what kids like,” Rolsten said.

He also envisions clubs for kids.

“I want the veterans to serve not only as docents, but as mentors in the kids’ clubs. ... They have demonstrated that they love this country,” he said.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh viewed the pre-

sentation during an open house last week at the Wilmington American Legion/ VFW Post.

“I think if they are successful, it’s a great spot,” he said.

“It would be another addition to the Historic Route 66. … I think it would be well-received,” Walsh said.

Rolsten and Niess are slated to appear before the Wilmington City Council, and Graff said he will ask for a resolution to support the program.

“We are a community that accepts and remembers our veterans,” he said.

The Route 66 site is great for the museum’s visibility and would also be complementary to the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, just a few miles north on Route 66, Graff said.

The artifacts are in storage in Colorado. The building and grounds are being offered for $1.2 million, and building improvements and necessary exhibits will bring the expected total cost to $5 million, Niess said.

If successful in raising the funds, the museum could begin development immediately, with an opening in about a year, Niess said.

Joliet man charged in Decatur murder

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A 19-year-old man was arrested Monday in Joliet on charges from a Decatur murder case.

Jevon E. Barber allegedly shot and killed a 28-year-old man and wounded four other people at a club early Monday, according to Decatur Deputy Police Chief Cody Moore.

Barber was attending a rap concert at Club Maxey, 1816 N. Water St. in Decatur, when a confrontation began between two groups of patrons, Moore said. Barber allegedly shot Mishari Halbrook, 28, of Decatur multiple times and fled.

Halbrook was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The other four victims’ injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to reports.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said Decatur police contacted Joliet officers to “check Jevon E. on some street Barber names” and tactical officers identified Barber.

Barber was located about 6 p.m. at a residence in the 800 block of Elizabeth Street and placed under surveillance,

Gregory said.

“He came out the back and ran back into the kitchen when officers approached, but was taken into custody without incident,” Gregory said.

Joliet police secured the residence before Decatur investigators arrived with a search warrant Monday night.

Barber was arrested on a charge of murder and is being held in the Macon County Jail on a $1 million bond.

According to jail records, Barber was arrested by Joliet police Aug. 7, 2014, on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and unauthorized possession of ammunition.

Educators: Proposed civics class requirement not needed ed last month to require students to take at least one semester of civics.

Legislators have not voted on the proposal yet. The bill was up for a third reading in the Senate as of Tuesday.

In a memo to state lawmakers last year, an Illinois State Board of Education task force recommended requiring a civics education course in high school. Illinois is one of 10 states without a civics or government course requirement.

House Bill 4025, introduced in February, initially required every public high school to include in its curriculum a separate civics course for students to learn skills that will prepare them to be responsible and competent citizens.

The bill, which would allow for private funding for a civics education, was amend-

classes that already cover the subject.

The amendment requiring one semester of civics pleased Dede Woodard, Joliet Township High School District 204 curriculum director.

As amended, the bill would have no affect on the Joliet high schools.

She said she’s discussed the bill with Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy, and there have been concerns it would limit opportunities for students to take other electives they need.

“It’s good they changed the language because we’re not in favor of adding requirements and mandates as far as additional courses, because

we’re already teaching those skills in our current curriculum,” she said.

Students at JTHS are required to take more than two years of social science classes. Woodward said most of civics is covered in the American government class.

Kim Brehm, Lockport Township High School District 205 spokeswoman, said civics is covered in a required U.S. history class. The school district also teaches citizenship as one of its six pillars of character for students, she said.

The creation of a standalone course at the high school level would affect course offerings that have

The bill would have a minor effect at Lincoln-Way High School District 210, said Tim Reilly, curriculum assistant superintendent. He said school officials would have to make sure the key requirements for civics education is in the classes they have.

“The idea of that course is very good and every high school should have it. We just want to make sure it doesn’t take away from our advanced classes,” Reilly said.

Bolingbrook police allege man used gun to collect rent Sunday

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Police say a man tried to collect rent money at gunpoint Sunday in Bolingbrook.

Police were called at 9:27 p.m. to a residence in the 600 block of East Boughton Road in Bolingbrook

“The disturbance was over rent money, which was owed to Richter by relatives. Officers were able to remove Richter from the residence and secure him without further in-

cident,” Rompa said.

Four people, including an infant, were in the house with Richter.

Police reportedly recovered a loaded 9 mm handgun from the scene. Richter was arrested and booked into the Will County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated unlawful restraint, un-

authorized possession of a firearm and reckless conduct.

Richter was released from jail Monday after posting a $20,000 bond.

Rompa said there were no reported injuries from the incident, but the Department of Children and William L. Richter Family Services was contacted.

Joliet airport holds maintenance clinics

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Classic airplane enthusiasts can sign up for aircraft maintenance and talk with experts this weekend.

The International Cessna 195 Club, JF Aviation and the Joliet Regional Airport will partner to host a service clinic Friday through Sunday at the city airport, 4000 Jefferson St. The clinic is one of many events the International Cessna 195 club holds internationally to educate aircraft owners and mechanics.

The event is open to the public.

The service clinic will focus on the Cessna 195 airplane model, built in Wichita, Kan-

sas, from 1947 to 1953 by Cessna Aircraft Co., Chris Thomsen, service clinic event organizer, wrote in a news release. He said every year the Cessna 195 club holds clinics where the group flies in experts who either restore planes or do routine maintenance.

“The neat thing about [Cessna 195] airplanes is there is not many flying and it’s kind of unique and everywhere we go, the public seems to be interested in them,” he said.

Thomsen said three Cessna 195 experts from across the nation will fly to the Joliet airport on the day of the service clinic. Between 18 to 19 aircraft are expected, as well, he said.

The clinics are designed to give airplane owners a chance to have an expert examine the airframe and engine installation of their airplane to discover any issues, according to the organization’s website.

The owners can follow experts along and ask questions.

Thomsen said the Cessna 195 is a unique model from a past era still used by pilots.

“This is unique in the fact we have many members who fly in modern instrument conditions – like in the clouds – with a 70-year-old aircraft,” he said. “It’s kind of unique to have an old aircraft that is viable in today’s air system.”

Joliet police say morning bridge jumper reconsiders

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police said a man jumped from a Joliet bridge in a suicide attempt Tuesday, but apparently changed his mind when he hit the water.

Gregory said about 9:15 a.m. the man, who was in his 40s, was driving by the Cass Street Bridge when he parked on the east side, got out of his vehicle, climbed onto the structure of the bridge and jumped into the Des Plaines River.

“He dove in, but began to

swim toward the river wall and grabbed onto some rebar sticking out into the river behind Champs Pawn Shop on Joliet Street,” Gregory said.

The man was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center on an involuntary psychiatric hold, Gregory said.

Joliet police: Teenager had sex with underage girl in backyard

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An 18-year-old man was arrested Saturday after he was allegedly seen having sex with a teenage girl in a backyard on the Far West Side of Joliet.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said at 8:04 a.m. a resident of the 7600 block of Oakshire Court called after

“she saw two kids having sex in the backyard of a house.”

When officers arrived, the male partner ran off through a nearby field and was stopped near Ascot and Kempton streets in the next subdivision, Gregory said.

“He provided a false name and date of birth, claiming to be 15 years old, but officers were able to identify him as Danquel L. Brown, 18,” Greg-

ory said.

Officers consulted with the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s office and determined the sexual encounter with the 13-year-old girl was not forced. Brown, of the 1400 block of Baltz Drive, was charged with criminal sexual abuse – a class A misdemeanor.

He also was charged with resisting arrest.

Woman shot during Joliet domestic fight

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police said a bullet grazed a woman’s arm when her boyfriend threatened her with a gun Friday.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said a witness heard the 28-year-old victim “screaming” about 10:40 p.m. in a residence in the 200 block of O’Neill Street and called police.

Michael Officers Franchi arrived to find the woman and Michael Franchi, 34, having “an altercation with a handgun visible on the kitchen table,” Gregory said.

When the woman ran outside, Franchi followed behind her and was taken into custody, Gregory said. The victim told police Franchi had pushed her and hit her in

the face during an argument.

When she said she was leaving, he returned to an upstairs bedroom with a handgun and fired it once, according to Gregory.

The bullet cut the victim’s right elbow and went through the closet into the bedroom next door. Gregory said a 2-year-old child and 6-month-old child were in the residence, but it was not known what room they were in at the time.

Franchi was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and aggravated domestic battery and is being held in the Will County Jail on $500,000 bond.

The victim was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for treatment. The Department of Children and Family Services was notified, Gregory said.

According to jail records, Franchi was arrested on domestic battery charges in July 2013 by Joliet police.

“Over the years, I’ve tried to be a little better about figuring out what songs they like to play. A lot of my students like music like from [the movie] ‘Frozen.’ ” Kelvin Lin, a local violinist based in Bolingbrook, has worked with the University of St. Francis music department.

He conducts online lessons through multiple cameras with students from various states, as far away as Alaska, he said.

Documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark dies at 75

By VERENA DOBNIK The Associated Press NEW YORK – Documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark, called “a snake charmer of the soul” for her gift of capturing searing images of human vulnerability, has died at age 75.

She died Monday at a New York hospital after a long battle with a blood illness caused by bone marrow failure, her close friend Kelly Cutrone said.

Mark’s subjects ranged from runaway children and heroin addicts to celebrities and world leaders. She also pointed her lens at members of the Ku Klux Klan, a women’s security ward in a mental institution and various celebrities.

Over the decades, “what resulted was, in fact, a lamentation: one of the most delicately shaded studies of vulnerability ever set on film,” wrote the late Time magazine art critic Robert Hughes.

A collection of Mark photographs in a book titled “Streetwise” documents the life of Tiny Blackwell, a Seattle prostitute and drug addict Mark met in the 1980s when Tiny was 13. A new book on Blackwell photographed over decades is yet to be published, titled “Tiny: Streetwise Revisited.”

The photographer chose Seattle “because it is known as ‘America’s most livable city,’ ” she wrote in the preface to her book on the subject.

“By choosing America’s ide-

al city we were making the point: ‘If street kids exist in a city like Seattle then they can be found everywhere in America, and we are therefore facing a major social problem of runaways in this country.’ ” Mark’s work appeared in prominent publications including Life, the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. She also published 18 books.

Her latest project, for CNN, was New Orleans on the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Mark was born and raised in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia. In 1962, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor of fine arts in art history and painting, followed by a master’s in photojournalism.

Her work drew attention in the 1960s, when she photographed heroin addicts in London, steeping herself in the humanity of overlooked subjects.

“She was a snake charmer of the soul,” said Cutrone, an author and publicist who considered Mark “like my divine mother and mentor.” “She had the ability and intuition to see inside people, to evoke their soul.”

Mark, in her SoHo neighborhood, knew people in the street and in shops, Cutrone said.

“She talked to everybody,” she said. “She was really connected.”

John “Jack” (Papa) Kerwin, age 89, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, May 23, 2015, in Joliet, IL. Jack was born in Joliet to Raymond and Dorothy (nee Iverson) Kerwin on December 21, 1925, and was raised by his father and grandmother Nettie after the untimely departure of his mother. He went to high school at Joliet Township and graduated in 1944. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and was a survivor of Iwo Jima and a Purple Heart recipient.

He worked as a machinist at Commonwealth Edison for over 35 years.

Jack was a lifetime member of the Moran A.C., a member of the Senior Citizen’s Association, and enjoyed golfing with the Medicare League, ushering at St. Mary Nativity Church and taking a stroll with his fourlegged furry companion, Abby.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was also a devoted fan to his loving grandchildren’s everyday endeavors. His Grandchildren were his life and fed his soul. His smile and humor will truly be missed.

Jack is preceded in death by the love of his life, Margaret (Petrilla) Kerwin; grandmother, Nettie Kerwin; parents, Raymond and Dorothy Kerwin; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and friends.

Robert G. “Bob” Howell, age 85, of Lockport, passed away peacefully May 12, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Hindsboro, IL, raised in Berwyn, IL, finally living in Lockport since 1957. He was a United States Army Veteran, stationed at the Naval School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA, playing string bass. He was ordered to report to the 7th Army Band in Europe, but was severely injured in a car accident which prevented his deployment.

Bob was a teacher from 1955 to 1992; teaching at Saybrook High School from 1955 to 1957, Lockport Township High School from 1957 to 1959, and Joliet Township High School District 204 from 1959 until his retirement in 1992. While at Joliet Central High School he served as department chair for many years.

He was a charter member and choir director for many years at Peace Lutheran Church in New Lenox; former choir director at Richards Street Methodist Church and Central Presbyterian Church in Joliet; member and past secretary for the Lockport Lions Club; former member of the Kelvin Grove School Board, serving for 18 years; Bicentennial Park Pops Band; JJC Community Band; Joliet American Legion Band, and the LOSS Group through the Catholic Charities in Chicago.

He was a very strong supporter of the Kelvin Grove and Lockport Township High School band parents organizations. Bob kept himself busy playing string bass in various dance bands in his early career and singing at many weddings and funerals; his first public performance was at his grandmother’s funeral at the age of 13. He was also very proud and privileged to co-produce many musicals at Joliet Township Central High School with a former student, Mike Zigrossi.

He graduated from Morton High School, Cicero, IL in 1947, attended Morton Junior College, the Sherwood School of Music in Chicago, and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1952, where he later earned his Masters of Music Education and Advanced Certificate of Music Education. Dems show priorities as they advance 2016 budget plan

SPRINGFIELD – A plan Illinois Democrats are proposing as an alternative to the steep cuts sought by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner would keep budget levels flat for local governments and Medicaid and only modestly reduce higher education assistance, committee leaders said Tuesday.

One day after Democratic leaders announced the $36.3 billion proposal for the fiscal year that begins in July, some details became clearer. In several areas, the budget plan contrasts vividly with what Rauner unveiled in February, setting up a major test for the newly divided government as the state prepares to grapple with its significant financial problems.

“We want a budget that invests in local public safety, in access to affordable education, in people’s children and seniors and their health,” said state Sen. Dan Kotowski, D-Park Ridge.

Republicans, meanwhile, met with the governor about returning home to their districts next week to emphasize the need for pro-business reforms before the state can spend more money.

Filing: Prep sports body exaggerating suit’s impact

CHICAGO – A new plaintiff’s filing in a class-action head injury lawsuit against the governing body of Illinois prep sports has asked a judge to let the litigation move forward.

Rauner names new National Guard adjutant general

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner has named Brig. Gen. Richard J. Hayes Jr. as adjutant general of the Illinois National Guard.

The 51-year-old from Chatham has served as the Illinois Guard’s deputy and assistant adjutant general since June 2013.

The appointment was announced Monday. Hayes re-

places Maj. Gen. Daniel Krumrei, who is retiring this summer.

In a statement, Rauner said Hayes served in Serbia as part of a NATO task force and led relief task forces in New Orleans after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

He also spent 27 years in the private engineering and construction industries, including as CEO of an Addison-based civil construction firm.

Hayes graduated from the U.S. Army War College.

WARRENVILLE – Horse shows have been called off in Illinois to stop the spread of infection after agriculture officials said two horses from a stable tested positive earlier this month for the equine herpes virus.

stable had symptoms of the contagious virus. Illinois State Veterinarian Mark Ernst said two horses were euthanized and a third horse has shown neurological problems from the infection, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The virus, commonly known as EHV-1, can cause respiratory problems, abortion, neurological disease and death in newborns.

Humans are not at risk. The state agriculture department is aware of one stable where horses were infected. It’s not clear how the animals were exposed.

The infected horses were performing at a Midwest Reining Horse Association event May 2 and 3 in Gifford in east-central Illinois when they began showing symptoms, Ernst said. The facility that hosted the event has closed for three weeks to disinfect and has canceled shows.

WASHINGTON – Amtrak said Tuesday it will install video cameras inside locomotive cabs to record the actions of train engineers, a move that follows a deadly derailment earlier this month that left investigators searching for clues to the engineer’s actions before the crash.

The Amtrak engineer, Brandon Bostian, suffered a head injury in the accident in Philadelphia and has told investigators he can’t remember what happened.

Northeast Regional train 188 accelerated to a speed of 106 mph in the last minute before entering a curve where it derailed. The train was equipped with a “black box” data recorder and an outward-facing camera focused on the track ahead, but neither devices reveals what was happening inside the cab.

NEW YORK – As TV watchers increasingly look online for their fix, cable companies are bulking up. In the latest round, Charter Communications is buying Time Warner Cable for $55.33 billion.

And executives said they’re confident regulators will allow the creation of another U.S. TV and Internet giant.

The deal comes a month after Comcast, the country’s largest cable provider, walked away from a $45.2 billion bid for Time Warner Cable, the No. 2 cable firm, after regulator pressure.

The government feared Comcast would be able to undermine increasingly popular online video competitors, such as Netflix, because Comcast would have more than half the country’s high-speed Internet customers.

Houston floodwaters deepen after city gets hit by more rain

WEBER The Associated Press HOUSTON – Floodwaters deepened Tuesday across much of Texas as storms dumped almost another foot of rain on the Houston area, stranding hundreds of motorists and inundating the famously congested highways that serve the nation’s fourth-largest city.

Meanwhile, the search went on for at least 13 people who were still missing, including a group that disappeared after a vacation home was swept down the river and slammed into a bridge.

Several more fatalities were reported – four in Houston and one more in Central Texas. That brought to 14 the number of people killed by the holiday weekend storms in Texas and Oklahoma.

Waters rose sharply overnight as about 11 more inches of rain fell, much in a six-hour period. By Tuesday evening, most rivers had receded back within their banks.

Height of hypocrisy for Mike Madigan REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – “We need taller interns,” a statehouse wag told me my first year covering the Illinois Capitol.

I was a bit perplexed.

After all, at 6-foot-4, I’ve never considered myself too short.

But back in 1988, folks wanted someone tall enough to peer into a high window of the governor’s office and tell the assembled reporters what was going on during a meeting between Speaker Michael Madigan and then-Gov. Jim Thompson.

I was too short to get the job done.

It’s a rite of May in Springfield that the legislative leaders hold private meetings and hammer out a budget and assorted other legislation.

And Madigan always has been a power broker in those.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has instituted “working groups” where a variety of legislators – not just the leaders – are included in private discussions.

That apparently doesn’t sit too well with Madigan or his counterpart, Senate President John Cullerton.

“If the governor is serious about the changes he is proposing, the right thing to do now is for us to bring these issues into the open and have a constructive and open discussion, vote, and see what steps need to be taken from there,” Madigan said.

Underlings for both Madigan and Cullerton have been more critical of the meetings.

And I’m not particularly keen on the current working groups keeping out the press and the public.

Public policy should be formulated in public.

Voters should know what sort of political horse trading is taking place – and be able to weigh in – before a deal takes place.

That said, it is the height of hypocrisy for Madigan to condemn the meetings for being private.

After all, he has been conducting secret negotiations with governors since before some members of the General Assembly were born.

And he has promoted a legislative process about as transparent as a slab of concrete.

Sure, there are legislative committees and debates. But Madigan pulls the strings and decides if and when bills will be called for a vote.

It’s hardly a transparent process.

But Madigan says he wants more transparency.

What next? Hugh Hefner condemns promiscuity? Michael Vick joins PETA? Rod Blagojevich calls for reform and renewal?

And Madigan condemns secrecy?

Give me a break.

To the Editor: I don’t even know what this guy Muhammad looks like. But I guess you can get a bunch of crazies to travel 1,000 miles with automatic weapons to attack you if you say you’re having a private showing of cartoon pictures of him.

This country was founded on many principles, but the first was freedom of speech.

We’ve protected it through flag burnings, urine-soaked Jesus, parades for every cause, protests in Ferguson and Baltimore, and on and on. I am sick of being a pacifist Christian.

The Old Testament had God being a hard leader. Don’t cross me, or else. “Or else” meant flood, famine, fire and brimstone.

There are many passages that show how God dealt with anyone who didn’t toe the line.

Then, there was a new approach that started with the birth of a baby in Bethlehem. I don’t know why the heavenly

change happened; I don’t know why love and forgiveness replaced punishment. And most of us were brought up believing in a new attitude toward our fellow man: Give everyone a chance to express their beliefs in their own way.

In the 1095, Pope Urban heard many reports of Muslim rape and beheadings and destruction of Christian sites in the Holy Land.

He called for all knights and noblemen in the European Christian world to return to the Holy Land in a crusade to rescue the persecuted Christians and reclaim the sacred sites of Christendom. Thousands traded their lives and fortunes to do that out of an allegiance they felt greater than anything earthly.

We are there again. Christians and Jews need a new leader to address radical Islam. I know the leader will find many modern-day brave knights and noblemen who have had enough of politeness and see the obvious course to take.

Plainfield Central ends JCA’s special season AREA SCHEDULE

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Blake Reardon had 18 kills in two sets, but not even that could lift the Joliet Catholic boys volleyball team over Plainfield Central in the Minooka Regional semifinal on Tuesday.

The Wildcats won, 25-20, 31-29, behind well-rounded play and Gage Wuestenfeld’s 12 kills.

Central will face Joliet West in the regional title match at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“I’m really happy with the way that the team played because, the whole season, I was expecting this level of play,” setter Noah Randall said. “It’s finally showing up when we need it the most at regionals, and I love it.”

The biggest difference between the Plainfield Central before and after the regional semifinal was its success in the back row. The passers limited JCA to two aces and passed consistently so Randall could set a balanced offensive attack.

Outside hitter Wuestenfeld normally has to swing for a lot of hits, but since the passing was consistent, middle hitters Wes Rogman (five kills) and Taylor Kegel (three kills) were able to deliver key swings at crucial points. Randall tallied 30 assists.

“Our offense has always run itself,” Wuestenfeld said.

“What really stepped up today was our defense and our serve receive. If we get the passes, our offense can run, and that’s what we had today.”

The defense, led by libero Gavin Broekema, and serving pressure helped contain the normally well-balanced Hilltopper offense.

A key to passing well and playing solid defense is to stay relaxed, and the Wildcats came into the match only planning to have fun and give it their all.

“We played more carefree than we have the entire season, and I have said all along that we had the talent and players to compete with teams like that, but a lot of times our anxiousness gets in the way,” Wildcats coach Alex Hurlburt said.

“Because we were so far seeded below them – numerous times, JCA has been mentioned in the top 10 in the state, things like that – we came out not worried. It’s not that we didn’t think that we could win – the odds were just against us. When we play carefree, we play well.”

“We didn’t expect to win,” Wuestenfeld added. “We just came in and said let’s have fun and see what we can do.

We took the first game, and it was like, ‘Wow, we can actually win this, guys.’ I believe we played more relaxed, and that helped a lot.”

Another thing that went well for Central was blocking.

At the net, the Wildcats had only five blocks go down for kills, but right-side Chad Badertscher was able to take away the line shot from JCA and limit their options, and Alec Machacek was able to do the same at the other outside hitter. The block was successful because it funneled the ball to where the defense was.

It didn’t hurt when Kegel added a big solo block to make the score 11-8 in Game 2 after winning a jousting battle in Game 1 to make the score 22-18 in favor of the Wildcats. Rogman added three shutdown

Setter Aaron Goeken tallied 25 assists, while Chandler Kowaliczko had six kills, Ben Gabor four, Mitch Gustafson three and Jason Turley two for the Hilltoppers (31-5).

“Plainfield Central did an excellent job on their side and did what they needed to do,” JCA coach Rhyen Staley said.

“We did not do what we needed to do until the end of Game 2, in which case it was far too late to fight back-and-forth. We should’ve been fighting that

After beating the take away all of the things that the team established this year: fourth-seeded team Monday, the conference title, breaking then beating No. 1 JCA in the 30 wins, so on and so forth. It’s semifinals, No. 5 Central hopes one of those things in sports to keep upsetting teams as it where all it takes is one off- plays No. 3 Joliet West in the match by your guys and one regional final Wednesday.

“We just have to carry on-match by them.”

There was a time in Allie Quigley’s life when the current professional basketball player tried her hand at baseball.

Yes, hardball. She and her sister, Sam, the women’s basketball coach at University of St. Francis, played some baseball in their youth at St. Joe’s Park in Joliet.

So when Allie was honored with an invitation to throw out the first pitch at the Cubs game against the Mets the night of May 12 at Wrigley Field, it wasn’t as if she was stepping into the great unknown. She knew what she was doing.

And just in case she had forgotten any of the basics, her brother, Ryan – who pitched professionally and gives pitching lessons – took her out about a week earlier and gave her a refresher course. From the mound at Wrigley, she came close to throwing a strike.

“It was fun,” Quigley said.

“The whole family got to go up that night. It was something I won’t ever forget.

“Ryan practiced with me probably a week before. It had been awhile since I threw a ball overhand.”

Even Quigley’s stepdad, Don Strle, a non-baseball fan if ever there was one, might have been seen having a good time.

“When I looked at him in the stands, I think I saw him enjoying himself,” Quigley said.

Quigley was all-everything in basketball, volleyball and softball at Joliet Catholic, graduating in 2004. She without a doubt is among the most accomplished female athletes to come out of Joliet.

She has played basketball professionally, both overseas and in the WNBA, since completing a stellar career at DePaul in 2008. But it wasn’t until the WNBA season of 2014, with the Chicago Sky, when Quigley’s pro career really took off.

Quigley’s versatility extends to mound at Wrigley

Center in Phoenix, Ariz. season, and Quigley stepped in and filled a huge portion of the void. Always a dangerous shooting guard, she spent significant time at the point because the team needed her and prospered there as well.

She played 24.8 minutes a game and averaged 11.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.7 steals while shooting .451 from the field, .400 from 3-point range and .870 from the free-throw line.

All of that earned Quigley the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year Award. She was a major reason the Sky reached the WNBA Finals, where they lost, 3-0, to the Phoenix Mercury. In the playoffs, she averaged 14.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists and shot .458 from the floor, .342 from 3-point land and .897 from the free-throw line.

“We’re all excited to be

picking up this season where we left off,” Quigley said. “It was tough to go out getting beat, 3-0, in the finals, but that just makes us more hungry.

“I’ll probably be in the same role as last year. Obviously, last year was one of my best, and I want to keep improving from there.”

Quigley recently returned from her typically strong season in Europe. She played her second season with league champion Wisla Can-Pack Krakow in Poland and averaged 14.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 31 games. She also played 12 games in the Euroleague, where several WNBA players toil and the competition is stronger, and averaged 11.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals.

“Our team did really well in Poland, just OK in the Euroleague,” she said. “I was

pretty much consistent this season with what I had been doing over there.”

It’s always interesting to hear how Quigley is described

by European scribes. A couple phrases borrowed here from the Eurobasket Data Center: “A shooting guard with lots of points in her hands,” and, “When she has the hot hand, it’s almost impossible to extinguish.”

The Sky opened the exhibition season Friday with a 8355 victory over the New York Liberty. Quigley’s contributions included hitting all three shots for six points to go with four assists and two steals.

After two more exhibition games, the Sky will begin the regular season with a home game June 5 against Indiana and a game June 6 at Tulsa.

That’s the last Sky fans will see of Quigley for a while. As

a European basketball player, she achieved Hungarian citizenship along the way. She is obligated contractually to play in international competition with the Hungarian national team.

“When you have these passports, you have to go play there when they want you to,” Quigley said. “I’ll be leaving June 7, right after our first two games. I’ll go to Hungary and will be back June 15 at the earliest, June 28 at the latest.

It depends how far our team goes.”

After all she accomplished with the Sky last season, the local WNBA entry will be eager for her return. Coach Pokey Chatman and the rest of the organization know her value firsthand.

Montgomery looking JJC recovers to to make more history earn finals berth in World Series

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A year ago, Kahmari Montgomery made history by becoming one of the few athletes ever to win titles in the 400-meter and 200-meter dash at the IHSA boys track and field finals.

This weekend, the Plainfield Central senior sprinter has his sights set on doing something no one ever has accomplished in the large-school division at state – capturing titles in the 100, 200 and 400, and repeat in the 200 and 400.

Based on his sectional performances at his own track last week, Montgomery looks as if he has a shot at winning titles in all three events, which last was accomplished by Leo’s Ryan Shields in Class A in 2002.

Montgomery’s time in the 400 of 46.87 seconds is nearly ninth-tenths of a second better than that of East St. Louis’ Roosevelt Davis. In the 200, the Wildcat senior also had the best sectional time (21.2), although Carbondale’s Cary Lockhart isn’t far behind (21.24).

The only one of the three events where Montgomery didn’t post the top sectional time was in the 100, where his 10.62 ranks second to Lockhart’s (10.46).

“Kahmari is truly a special athlete beyond the times that he has put forward this season,” Central coach Jon Pereiro said. “The growth he has shown through the past three years, both as an athlete and as a person, is a big part of his success story. Kahmari began on our track team as a sophomore searching for an identity. He has grown into a strong leader and a phenomenal young man. His success on the track has directly followed this curve.

“Throughout the work and all the meets he has put in this season, we have been focusing on one goal: to demand a successful performance of himself every time he steps on the track. We gauge success at Plainfield Central by the

Since the IHSA joined and University of Illinois first co-sponsored the Illinois Interscholastic meet in 1926 – which was the forerunner of the current finals – only 11 individuals have won the 200 and 400 at the same competition, and just five were in the large-school division.

In 1956, Phillips’ John Lattimore won the 220-yard and 440-yard dashes to become the first man to pull off that feat. In 1985, Mount Carmel’s Harold Leonard duplicated that feat by winning the renamed 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.

One of the closest calls at an attempt to win all three events came in 2000 by Lemont’s Nick Bromberek. While Shields was completing his first of three 100, 200 and 400 sweeps in Class A, the Lemont standout scored 38 points to give his squad a second-place finish.

In addition to winning the long jump, Bromberek took first in both the 200 and 400.

His fantastic day was spoiled only slightly when Bloom Township’s Kenny Mannie edged him by one one-hundredths in the 100.

Before last year, the last time an individual won both the 200 and 400 at the largeschool meet was in 2003, when Thornwood’s Jeremy Johnson did so. That was the same year the Wildcats captured their first championship as Charles Howell easily won the 100 title.

There only have been four repeat champions in the 400 (or 440-yard at that time) in the large-school division, with the last coming in 1978-79 by Elgin’s Tony Adams.

And only nine have been repeat large-school champs in the 200 (or 220-yard), beginning with a three-year run from 1928-30 by a future Olympian, Tilden’s Ralph Metcalfe, who also won three-straight 100 titles.

Wheaton North’s Adam Harris was the last largeschool champion to repeat in the 200, doing so in 2004-05.

Harris also won the 110 hurdles in 2005 – and Montgomery would like to join him as one of the few to win three individual titles on the track.

Montgomery also figures to make a run at the oldest-existing record time at the finals when he competes in the 400.

The current standard of 46.51 was set by Leonard in 1985.

KINSTON, N.C. – Joliet Junior College ran into a buzz saw late Monday night and suffered its first loss in the NJCAA Division III World Series.

However, the Wolves bounced right back Tuesday night and earned a berth in the championship game.

Tyler (Texas) used the two-hit pitching of Jonathan Groff and an explosive offensive attack to beat the Wolves, 10-0, in a semifinal game shortened to five innings because of the slaughter rule. Tyler scored in every inning, highlighted by a five-run fourth.

That’s the same Tyler team that JJC now must beat twice, Wednesday night and Thursday night, in order to win a fourth national championship under Hall of Fame coach Wayne King. If Tyler wins either night, the Wolves will finish second.

JJC (39-24) earned its berth in the finals with an 11-0, five-inning victory over Herkimer on Tuesday night.

In the loss to Tyler, Nick Andrade (Lincoln-Way West) and Jake Drade had the JJC hits against Groff, who struck out 10. Nick Lindemann (Lockport) started for the Wolves and allowed eight hits and seven runs, five earned, in three innings. Lindemann and relievers Paul Budde and Shawn Daniel combined to walk nine batters.

SOFTBALL

Plainfield Central 9, Joliet Central 0: Plainfield Central

scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back in the Class 4A Providence Regional semifinal victory Tuesday.

Michaela Schlattman went 3 for 4 with a home run, Hannah Granceschini was 2 for 3, and Brooklyn Daly allowed one hit while fanning 11 to pick up the victory.

(four RBIs), Emily Ray (RBI), Kayla Seymour (four RBIs) and Danielle Callahan (three runs, three RBIs) each had two hits for West in the Class 3A Kankakee Regional semifinal victory. Amanda Ruskowsky allowed one hit while striking out 12.

Other scores: Host Lincoln-Way East topped Bloom, 17-0, in its Class 4A Regional semifinal; Lockport fell to host Homewood-Flossmoor, 5-0, in the Class 4A Regional semifinal; and Wilmington dominated Beecher, 18-9, in a Class 2A Seneca Sectional semifinal.

Behind five Sinrat kills and Pfeiffer’s setting, Lockport actually led the third set, 12-9, after which West finished on a 16-3 run.

“That third game was one of the better ones of my life,” Jackson said. “Kyler [Van Rossum-O’Connell] is one of the best setters I ever played with. I’m glad I have him with me.

“I told my teammates to follow me, and they did. They matched my intensity. That’s what did it for us.”

“It’s nice to be able to feed someone like that when he’s

on,” Van Rossum-O’Connell said of Jackson.

What Jackson did not put away in the third set, Max Ahern, Scott Lyman and Van Eck did.

“We knew we had it in us to have a game like Game 3,” West coach Jason Herrmann said. “We have had several matches where we play well in Game 2 after losing the lead in Game 1 and losing it.

“We were kind of passive there at the end,” Mraz said.

“We had 21 blocking errors, and that came from them hitting so aggressively. They were the more aggressive team.

“But even though we were playing sloppy, we had that 12-9 lead in the third game.

But we couldn’t stop them.

They were swinging so well.”

As disappointed as the Porters were with where it ended, however, they had quite a season.

“That’s what I told our seniors,” Mraz said. “Thirty wins is usually the benchmark, and they came up one short. They had the most wins our school has ever seen. They’ve got to hold their heads up. They are building a tradition.”

Lincoln-Way West, Central in regional final

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – It doesn’t take much to motivate the boys volleyball teams from Lincoln-Way West and Lincoln-Way Central when they have a match against one another.

So it’s a safe bet their respective coaches won’t have to give any inspirational talks prior to the squads’ meeting in Wednesday’s Lincoln-Way North Regional finals.

The top-seeded Warriors advanced with a 25-19, 25-15 victory over Andrew, while third-seeded Central beat second-seeded North, 25-20, 25-23, in the second semifinal.

West (31-4) will meet with

Central (25-12) in Wednesday’s title match, which is at 6 p.m.

“We had a good game plan and got out to a good start,” Central coach Neil Lucchetti said. “We knew that they were going to serve aggressively, and that’s how they caught us off-guard twice. We went into cruise control and then knew we had to start pushing again.”

The Knights jumped out to a 13-4 lead in their opening set, but the Phoenix pulled to within 20-18. However, Central closed things out with two kills from Kyle Nilsen (10 kills) and single kills from Connor Hipelius (five kills) and Mark Sargis.

In the second set, the Knights grabbed a 14-11 lead before North surged to a 20-

17 advantage behind four kills and an ace from Ethan Klosak.

But the Knights answered that threat by scoring eight of the final 11 points as Nilsen added two more kills, Andrew Bergstrand (four kills) added a block and a kill, and Neal Brown (five kills) and Hipelius also added kills to wrap up the victory.

“It feels really good,” Nilsen said. “We knew that this is one of the toughest regionals in the state, so we knew that we couldn’t take it for granted. We want to get farther than we did last year.”

In the first match of the semifinal, West met an Andrew squad that featured a strong player in Sanil Thomas and was coming off an upset

win over Lincoln-Way East from the day before.

“They had a lot of momentum coming in, and we knew that we had to match their intensity right off the bat,” Warriors coach Brian Thorp said.

“We had to keep a positive mindset and know that if we stuck together, that we’d get through any ups and downs that we’d face.”

There was less drama in the second set after West grabbed a 12-5 lead and never let the T-Bolts get any closer than five points back. The Warriors scored eight of their final nine points on kills as Scott Christensen (five kills), Jake Gasparich (five kills) and Dylan Kogut all joined Wexter in collecting kills to wrap up the victory.

“They were definitely coming off of a high point and were putting everything together at the end, so it was a very dangerous game going in,” Wexter said. “I thought that we did a great job of kind of stifling what they were doing with our blocking in the first game.”

CHANNAHON – It is a regional where any of the top six seeds could have been in the championship match.

“Plainfield Central against Joliet West – there you go,” Lockport coach Nick Mraz said after his second-seeded Porters dropped a 24-26, 25-20, 25-15 decision to No. 3 Joliet West on Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Minooka Regional.

Plainfield Central, the fifth seed, was an upset winner for the second straight day as it beat No. 1 Joliet Catholic in two sets in Tuesday’s first semifinal.

West (24-11) had leads of 2322 and 24-23 in the first set but could not put away Lockport (29-6), which had beaten the Tigers, 28-26, 25-19, about a week earlier. Albert Sinram, Anthony Pfeiffer and Matt Sadler scored consecutive kills for the final three points as the Porters escaped.

Lockport was within 11-10 midway through the second set when West began to assert itself. The Tigers were up, 23-

20, when Luke Van Eck – who had six digs, three fewer than team leader Chris Beltran – finished it with a kill off an assist from Kyler Van Rossum-O’Connell and a block kill.

“It was tough to lose the first set when we had a couple chances to win it,” Van Rossum-O’Connell said. “We picked up our intensity the last two games. Our passing was better, and our attitude was better.”

West outside hitter Juwann Jackson was a beast in the third set, when he collected 10 of his 19 kills – most off assists from Van Rossum-O’Connell, who had 12 of his 29 assists in that set.

To close it out, Van Rossum-O’Connell served the final seven points as West finished on an 8-0 run after leading, 17-15.

Matt Wyman’s block kill produced point No. 25 and set off the celebration.

Ducks’ defensemen causing Hawks problems

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Anaheim stars Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler are drawing a lot of attention in the Western Conference finals. When the Ducks’ defensemen join the attack, it presents a big problem for the Blackhawks.

The Ducks got four points from their defensemen in Monday night’s 5-4 overtime win that moved them within one victory of the Stanley Cup finals. It was their best total since their defensemen accounted for six points in a 6-1 victory over Calgary in Game 1 of their second-round series on April 30, according to STATS. “The main thing that we’ve had throughout the playoffs is we’ve had scoring from all four lines, and we’ve also had people on the back end who can pitch in every once in a while,” defenseman Cam

Fowler said Tuesday before the Ducks departed Southern California for Game 6 at the United Center.

“I think it puts more pressure on other teams defensively when they know there’s not just going to be three forwards they have to worry about; they have to worry about the second wave coming in, which might be a fourth defenseman. That changes things a little bit.”

Fowler and Sami Vatanen scored during Anaheim’s fast start in Game 5. Vatanen also had an assist on Patrick Maroon’s goal in the third. Anaheim leads the NHL with 42 points from defensemen in 14 playoff games, compared to 31 for the Hawks in 15 games, according to STATS. “It’s been really essential.

But it’s happened all year,” coach Bruce Boudreau said.

“No one knew about it all year because nobody knew who Sami Vatanen or Hampus Lindholm were. They had

an inkling of who Cam Fowler was. None of these guys were really on the radar as far offensive defensemen.

“But they’re good puck-moving guys and they create offense. If you look at their numbers, they’re all up there. Five out of the six, anyway, are always up there in the scoring for defensemen.”

The performance in Game 5 ran their total for the series to 13 points. If Anaheim’s defensemen fill up the scoresheet again Wednesday night, that could spell the end for the Hawks. But the seasoned Hawks are promising a fight to the finish.

“There’s a lot of history here that we’ve collected over seven years. A lot of positive things,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “I think we all came out of last night’s game with an anger and a real sour taste in our mouth. Sometimes that can be better than a history lesson.”

always all that great at making them. That’s because there is more to making burgers than serving time at the grill. But if you master a few easy tips and techniques, you can produce burgers that will blow you away. And the good news is almost everything can be done in advance.

Once you have mastered the burger basics, you can up the ante by creating all kinds of competition-worthy burgers simply by switching up the toppings.

I’ve listed my four favorite topping combinations below. You may notice that they all have a crunchy element. This is the one topping that I never eliminate, as it is the secret that takes a burger from good to great!

Now let’s talk about mixing and forming the meat. It’s important you not overwork the meat.

The more you work the mix, the tougher and drier the burgers will be. I like to use a fork to mix the meats. The heat from your hands can heat up the beef, and you want it to stay chilled until it hits the grill.

To form the patties, it’s best to loosely scoop up a 1 ⁄3-pound mound of the meat mixture, then gently pat it into a patty. When you are happy with the shape, make a depression in the center with your finger. This depression is the key to a perfect patty. It will prevent your burger from swelling up like a ball on the grill. As the burger cooks, the meat will expand to fill the hole.

Now, the cooking.

Burgers should be cooked directly over medium to medium-high heat. They should take 8 to 10 minutes total, 4 to 5 minutes a side. And please resist the urge to mash the burgers down with the spatula. This just causes all the yummy juices to leak out. Also, only turn the burger once halfway through the cooking time, after about 4 minutes.

This reduces the chances it will stick to the grate and fall apart.

If flare-ups are a problem during grilling, close the lid of the grill.

This should extinguish the flames. If not, you may need to both close the grill and turn off the burners.

American Classic Burger: American cheese, Heat the grill to medium.

In a large bowl, combine the chuck, sirloin, Worcestershire, mustard powder, ½ teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper. Use a fork to carefully and gently mix just until well combined. Do not overmix.

Gently divide the meat into 6 mounds, then shape each into a patty. Use your thumb to create an indentation in the center of each patty. Lightly brush each patty all over with olive oil.

Make sure your grill’s cooking grate is clean of all debris. Add the burgers and grill until the meat is

no longer pink, 8 to 10 minutes, turning once halfway through grilling time. If making cheeseburgers, top each burger with cheese after you turn it. Let the burgers rest about 5 minutes then serve on buns with condiments and toppings as desired.

Let’s start with the meat. If you want a rich, juicy burger, you have to use ground meat that has some natural fat.

Ground chuck is the most common choice. The chuck is ground from the beef shoulder and has enough natural fat to give your burger a rich, moist flavor. You can use 100 percent chuck, or you can do what I do and use a combination of ground sirloin and ground chuck. Sirloin provides a lean texture and chuck adds big beefy flavor.

When I am hankering for something extra meaty, I substitute ground brisket for the chuck. Whatever your blend, plan on 1⁄3 of a pound of meat per burger, so figure a total of 1 pound of meat per three burgers.

At the bridge table, if one side is laughing, the other is usually crying. Today’s deal occurred during a pairs event, where overtricks were important because each score was compared with the other pairs holding the same cards.

How should South try for the maximum in this deal? He is in four spades, and West leads the heart queen.

North used a transfer bid to show five-plus spades and at least zero points. South, with a maximum, fourcard spade support and a doubleton, jumped to three spades – this is known as a superaccept. North, who had been undecided between inviting and insisting on game, now had no qualms in bidding four spades.

South saw four losers: one spade and three clubs. If he had immediately led a trump, the defenders surely would have taken those tricks.

Instead, declarer had to try to jettison those club losers. He won the first trick, cashed dummy’s diamond queen (the honor from the shorter hand first), played a diamond to his ace, discarded a club on the diamond king, and, because it could not cost, pitched another club on the diamond jack.

If it had been ruffed with a low spade, South would have broken even. Here, though, East had to ruff with his spade ace, so the contract made with an overtrick for a tied top.

Dear Doctor K: I’ve been experiencing premature ejaculation. What is the most effective way to treat this?

Dear Reader: Premature ejaculation (PE) occurs when a man reaches orgasm and ejaculates too quickly and without control. In other words, ejaculation occurs before a man wants it to happen.

Several factors may contribute to this problem. Diabetes, problems with the thyroid gland or inflammation of the prostate are common culprits.

Stress, depression and other emotional factors can also play a role. But most men with PE are healthy.

Sometimes, PE goes away on its own. Finding ways to relieve stress or other psychological issues may help. If PE continues, treatment may involve behavioral techniques, medication or both.

My colleague Dr. Harvey Simon recommends starting with behavioral therapy. It is safe and simple, and helps about 60 to 90 percent of men. Here are three methods you can try, alone or in combination. Many people find that consulting an experienced sex therapist is helpful in learning the behavioral therapy techniques: (1) The “pause and squeeze” technique is the most effective method.

When you feel an orgasm developing too early, stop sexual activity. Then either you or your partner gently squeezes the shaft of the penis between the thumb and two fingers for about 20 seconds. You relax the squeeze and start sexual activity again. This technique somehow leads the body to learn how to delay ejaculation without the squeeze. Several of my patients say that this technique has also worked for them when the sexual activity is not actual sex with a partner, but self-stimulation.

Dear Abby: I’m in my 40s, happily married to my wife, and we have teenage daughters. My parents divorced when I was young and both have been remarried for years.

Over the past 10 years, Dad and his wife have developed a very close “friendship” with a woman I’ll call “Bonnie.” They bought homes next door to each other, travel together, and expect Bonnie to be included in all holiday events. Bonnie has never been married and has no kids, so my parents reason that she would be alone if she’s not with them.

I am not fond of this woman and I don’t like having to include her. My parents never ask if it’s OK if she comes; they just started bringing her years ago and assume she’s welcome.

When I have brought up the subject, they got angry.
