By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Village staff and trustees feel sure a potential medical marijuana dispensary in the works for the Mokena Crossings Business Park will be good for the village.

Trustees last month cleared the way for a medical marijuana dispensary at 9930 W. 190th St., Unit H, after several months of meetings and discussions.

“It meets all the requirements by the state and the village,” Village Administrator John Downs said, adding there have been many public meetings since Greenhouse Group LLC applied for a special-use permit last August.

“We’ve had relatively minor feedback and numerous meetings,” Downs said. “At a Planning Commission meeting, a few people spoke up in

opposition to it. But I was told they were more philosophical comments on the use of cannabis.”

During an April 20 work session meeting, Green house Group presented the Village Board with plans for the dispensary, one of three proposed by the group, along with facilities in Morris and Deerfield.

The dispensary, which would include holistic services such as yoga, acupuncture, massages and chiropractic treatment, would take up 5,100 square feet in the existing industrial use building.

Times for the dispensary would be Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

About 20 employees would go through extensive training and background checks, according to the group.

The dispensary also would

provide a projected $15,000 in sales tax revenue to the village in its first year of operation.

A security plan would be implemented by Bradley-based security contractor Sorenson, Wilder & Associates. Mokena police have also looked into the security of the operations.

“There are no big issues with the security plan,” Police Chief Steven Vaccaro said. “They have one of the most comprehensive safety and community plans I’ve ever seen. And we can address any additional concerns with them.”

State laws require medical marijuana dispensaries to be at least 1,000 feet away from any existing school, day care center or group home. They also are prohibited in residential zoning districts and prohibited as home-based businesses.

Group pursuing new location for marijuana dispensary in Morris

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – On, off and back on – Greenhouse Group LLC is pursuing a new location in Morris for a medical marijuana facility.

The medical marijuana dispensing company is applying for a conditional permitted use permit to open a dispensary at the former Rockwell Inn restaurant, 2400 W. Route 6 in Morris, across from the Morris Country Club.

Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said the contract to purchase the property likely is contingent on Greenhouse Group acquiring permits and approval.

A public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday during the Morris Planning Commission meeting in the Morris Municipal Services Facility’s council chambers, 700 N. Division St. Greenhouse Group was

approved in early February by the state for a dispensing license to be shared between Grundy and Kendall counties.

In March, the company was set to appear at a public hearing before the Planning Commission, but postponed its request. No reason was given by representatives to the city, but the proposed location – 1204 N. Division St., the former “Play It Again” video store – met with controversy because of its proximity to Forte Arts Center and another area day care center.

Greenhouse Group was back on the commission’s agenda April 29. But that hearing request was also withdrawn by Greenhouse Group.

Pam Simpson, owner of Forte Arts Center, her staff and customers submitted letters of objection to the commission and Morris City Council. They were ready to speak at the public hearing.

Michelle Mitchell, owner of Prodigy Kids Christian Home Daycare, 1315 Liberty St., also wrote a letter of objection. A map was provided, showing her day care was within 1,000 feet of the proposed location.

The Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act prohibits a dispensary from being within 1,000 feet of a pre-existing preschool, elementary or secondary school, day care center or home or group day care home.

“I think they checked [the new location] out and decided they’re far enough away from schools,” Cheshareck said.

Greenhouse Group’s office address is 707 Skokie Blvd.

Calls to Frontline Real Estate Principal Matt Darin were not immediately returned last week.

Only 60 dispensaries are allowed, geographically distributed, throughout the state.

Only state-approved medical marijuana cardholders will be allowed to enter the facility as customers. And the list of approved conditions for medical marijuana use in Illinois is one of the most restrictive in the country, totaling 11 medical conditions when the state law took effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

Downs said the village has placed more restrictions on top of state requirements.

Under Mokena’s rules, a business or license can’t transfer owners without Village Board approval. At least one spot on the dispensary’s advisory board is reserved for a Mokena resident. Only medical marijuana will be sold and dispensed at the site.

And a security plan must be approved.

On Monday, about 2,000 people endured intermittent rain to show their respects to the veterans buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Plainfield hosts observance despite rain Statue moved, rededicated

PLAINFIELD – The light rain didn’t dampen the spirits of those gathering Monday at Ira Jones Middle School in Plainfield as they prepared to march the parade route that would take them to Settlers Park for the village of Plainfield’s annual Memorial Day observance.

The rain stopped and the parade kicked off from the school led by the Plainfield American Legion Marne Post No. 13 Color Guard and followed by members of the Knights of Columbus Council 5573, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Participants proceeded east down Ottawa Street and onto the path of Settlers Park near the intersection of Van Dyke Road and Ottawa Street where a crowd gathered.

Frank Pecoraro, commander of American Legion Marne Post, began the ceremony by welcoming the attendees followed by a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. In addition to paying tribute to service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, there was a rededication of the Veterans Memorial statue, which had been moved to Settlers Park last week.

John Argoudelis, former Plainfield Township Supervisor thanked all the business and individuals who helped to get the Veterans Memorial statue moved from its former location on Route 59 and make it a part of the park next to the Civil War monument.

Argoudelis concluded the rededication by quoting a portion of the Gettysburg Address given by President Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldier’s National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, four and half months after the

He read “… that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.”

Also at the observance was the presentation of a miniature replica of the Tribute Memorial to Helen Schwab.

The monument was created to pay tribute to servicemen and women killed during peace-

time. Schwab was part of the tribute committee that was responsible for the monument, which was originally located on Plainfield High School’s Central Campus.

The monument was repaired after it was damaged by the tornado that devastated Plainfield on August 28, 1990 and moved to Settlers Park in 2014.

Schwab’s son, Plainfield High School graduate and Army Chief Warrant Officer Jeffrey Schwab was killed on January 11, 1984, during peacetime military maneuvers in Honduras. With tears in her eyes and hugs to all those surrounding her, she thanked her family.

“I have an amazing family,” Schwab said.

JOLIET – Efforts among Joliet Junior College students to create a more environmentally friendly campus have earned them second place in a national campus recycling contest.

Members of the Students for a Sustainable Future participated for the second consecutive year in the PepsiCo Campus Recycling Challenge. Between the months of October and March, students recycled 36,130 beverage containers, totaling 1,974 pounds, JJC officials said.

Student Patrick Kacirek remembers working nonstop until the final hour to collect as much recyclable material as he could for the contest.

“We were talking to everyone we could,” he said, and later added, “... It was definitely really aggressive on the last day.”

As part of the contest, students collected beverage containers and fed them into the school’s Dream Machine, an interactive kiosk provided by PepsiCo. When JJC earned first place in the PepsiCo Campus Recycling Challenge last year, students recycled so much the company installed a second Dream Machine in the college – the only college nationwide to have two, JJC officials said.

This was the first year PepsiCo offered a monetary award for the contest, and by winning second place, JJC earned $15,000. Claflin University in South Carolina won the first place prize of $25,000.

“It was a lot of work and it was a lot of fun and I was proud of us even to win second,” said Eric Wilhelmi, president of Students for a Sustainable Future.

Students have done more than win contests to show the importance of recycling. Last year, Wilhelmi said, students with the Garbage to Recycle program rifled through trash cans and picked out recyclable items to show people what they were throwing away.

The items were put on display for students to see. Wilhelmi said it showed people how

much they “choose to throw away and put it in a landfill when they could move their arms a few inches and throw into a recycle bin.”

JJC has a sustainability initiatives committee that focuses on the environment, economy and social equity on campus.

The Students for a Sustainable Future is a part of those efforts.

Sustainability is more than environmental health. It also is human health, said Maria Anna Rafac, a JJC professor and sustainability coordinator.

Every Thursday from May 28 to Sept. 17, JJC will have its weekly farmers market, where visitors can buy fresh produce from noncommercial vendors. The college also will offer courses in photography, software, cooking and dancing, as well as camps for children and teenagers.

The third annual farmers market will be at the Greenhouse Facility on the Main Campus, 1515 Houbolt Road, Joliet.

Rachel Rose, JJC media and communications specialist, said the farmers market will accept Illinois LINK funds. The market will offer produce, baked goods, grassfed meats and gourmet candy.

“All of our producers are local farmers or shop owners.

No commercial enterprises are allowed,” Rose said.

Classes on subjects such as photography and cooking will be available for people looking to do something fun, Rose said.

“It’s for people looking to pursue a passion,” she said.

An eight-week digital photography class will begin June 2. The course will cover camera basics and students will take photos between sessions.

There will be another digital photography class on July 15, which will teach photography techniques through hands-on exercises.

For people curious about cooking, a sausage-making course and another on tropical dishes will begin June 15 and July 23, respectively. Students will learn from chefs in the sausage-making class how to make handcrafted sausages.

Senior citizens and others also can learn more about Medicare with a course be-

welding, architecture, engineering and other topics.

High school students in the culinary camp will learn about how to prepare and present artful meals.

Wohlrab also mentioned that open outdoor fire pits are becoming more popular this time of year. In Joliet, residents are limited to burning logs for fires.

“You can’t burn lumber, grass and other vegetation,” Wohlrab said, adding that people have used yard clippings in the past, which can cause heavy smoke, posing a threat to people with asthma or other respiratory diseases.

Standoff between Rauner, Democrats hangs over Legislature

CHICAGO – A standoff between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who control the Illinois Legislature is threatening to derail action on a long list of issues as lawmakers enter the final days of their spring session.

At the center of the fight are the 2016 state budget and a package of legislation Rauner wants approved but Democrats oppose.

Democrats, who hold supermajorities in both chambers, want a tax increase to help erase a roughly $6 billion deficit in the budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Rauner and other GOP lawmakers said they’re open to raising taxes, but only if the General Assembly first passes his legislative priorities, which include term limits for lawmakers and freezing property taxes.

Meanwhile several other measures – from a plan to expand gambling to a new capital construction program to replace crumbling roads and bridges – could get caught up in the legislative gridlock.

Here are some things to know as the Illinois Legislature heads toward its Sunday deadline: BUDGET Democrats on Monday introduced their proposed 2016 budget, a plan they crafted without Republican input and that they’re expected to pass without any GOP votes. Democrats said the roughly $36 billion plan wouldn’t cut spending as much as Rauner proposed in the $31.5 billion plan he presented in February.

TAXES Lawmakers have floated several options for bringing in new revenue, though they’ve yet to advance any legislation.

One option is to raise Illinois’ income tax rate, which fell from 5 percent to 3.75 percent for individuals on Jan. 1 – a major reason the state now is dealing with a multibillion-dollar deficit.

Lawmakers have suggested the

rate could be increased to around 4 percent or 4.5 percent.

RAUNER AGENDA The Senate is scheduled this week to hold committee hearings on some pieces of Rauner’s legislative agenda. They include reducing the cost to businesses of workers’ compensation insurance, changing Illinois’ legal system to make it more difficult for companies to be sued and freezing property taxes.

Those proposals are highly unlikely to advance, however, because Democrats see them as harmful to working people.

GAMBLING A bipartisan group of lawmakers has been meeting to hammer out a deal to expand gambling, including a new casino in Chicago that Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to help address the city’s multibillion-dollar public-pension shortfall.

CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION The Illinois Department of Transportation this month said the state needs to spend billions more on roads and bridges than is currently planned. But the $31 billion from a capital construction plan former Gov. Pat Quinn approved has run out, and there’s no plan for what to do next.

Safety system needed before Illinois line operational

CHICAGO – A safety feature that slows trains traveling dangerously fast is one of the last components that must be installed before a Chicago-St. Louis high-speed line becomes operational, officials said.

Springfield’s State Journal-Register cited a state Department of Transportation spokesman as saying the system is required under an agreement with the U.S. government.

The GPS-reliant system, known as positive train control, was in the news in the wake of the recent Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia. Experts have said it could have prevented the crash that killed eight.

The system is already installed on the Dwight-to-Pontiac section of the Illinois line, said Mike Stead, a manager of the rail safety program at the Illinois Commerce Commission.

Licensing beaches, pools as swimming season starts

CHAMPAIGN – Swimming season is starting in Illinois and the state has been licensing public pools and beaches.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is in charge of the regulations under the Illinois Swimming Facility Act. There are 952 city-owned swimming pools in Illinois and that number goes up every year, the Champaign News-Gazette reported.

The agency keeps an online database of the facilities it licenses. The database is updated daily to reflect license or inspection changes.

Public pools and beaches are inspected at least once a year.

Chicago police seek help finding driver in fatal hit-and-run

CHICAGO – Police are asking the public for information to help them find the driver of a car that struck and killed a 5-year-old girl on Chicago’s southwest side.

Authorities said the car that hit Maria Gonzalez was a 2-door Honda Civic with a sunroof and spoiler and a dark finish that was dull or had a primer coat. The car also may have a front-end bra, sport muffler and a broken lamp.

Maria’s family said she was struck Saturday afternoon on a residential street after buying a treat from an ice cream vendor.

The driver fled the scene.

Her father said the girl died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Canoeist drowns trying to save cat in Illinois lake

ANTIOCH – Police said a man drowned in a northern Illinois lake while trying to save a cat.

Lake County officials said the death happened Sunday night on Loon Lake in Antioch. The Lake County Sheriff’s office said the man was in a canoe with another man, a woman and the cat. Officials said the cat jumped into the water and the man went after the animal. Sheriff’s officials said the canoeist’s body was recovered early Monday.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS ‘Ugly’ potential fallout from health care case

WASHINGTON – A Supreme Court ruling due in a few weeks could wipe out health insurance for millions of people covered by President Barack Obama’s health care law. But it’s Republicans – not White House officials – who have been talking about damage control.

A likely reason: Twenty-six of the 34 states that would be most affected by the ruling have Republican governors, and 22 of the 24 GOP Senate seats up in 2016 are in those states.

Obama’s law offers subsidized private insurance to people without access to it on the job. In the court case, opponents of the law argue its literal wording allows the federal government to subsidize coverage only in states that set up their own health insurance markets.

Most states have not done so, because of the intense partisanship over “Obamacare” and in some cases because of technical problems. Instead, they rely on the federal HealthCare.gov website.

If the court invalidates the subsidies in those states, an estimated 8 million people could lose coverage. The results would be “ugly,” said Sandy Praeger, a former Kansas insurance commissioner.

Ireland’s first gay marriage possible by July DUBLIN – Some of Ireland’s

gay couples planning a civil partnership may receive a surprisingly fast upgrade to marriage.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald announced Monday that the bill to legalize gay marriage, following its landslide approval in Friday’s referendum, should be passed before lawmakers’ planned July 16 summer recess.

She said as part of the law, those gay couples already scheduled to be wed in civil partnership ceremonies following the bill’s passage will have their pre-booked events legally upgraded to full-fledged marriages.

Fitzgerald said: “I am very conscious that many couples will want to get married as soon as possible. I am working to make that happen.”

Gay couples in Ireland have been entitled to marriage-style civil partnerships since 2011.

Like marriages, these must be scheduled at least three months in advance.

Charter nears deal for Time Warner Cable

Charter Communications Inc. is close to buying Time Warner Cable for about $55 billion, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because of the private nature of the deal talks.

One of the people said the deal will be announced early Tuesday morning.

Obama pays tribute to fallen service members at Arlington

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE The Associated Press ARLINGTON, Va. – President Barack Obama on Monday saluted Americans who died in battle, saying the country must “never stop trying to fully repay them” for their sacrifices. He noted it was the first Memorial Day in 14 years without U.S. forces engaged in a major ground war.

Speaking under sunny skies to some 5,000 people in an amphitheater on the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, Obama said the graveyard is “more than a final resting place of heroes.”

“It is a reflection of America itself,” he said, citing racial and religious diversity in the backgrounds of the men and woman who paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve “the ideals that bind us as one nation.”

His appearance is an annual rite for presidents at the cemetery nestled among verdant hills overlooking

the Potomac River. It came months after the end of the U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan, where the number of stationed troops has been reduced to about 10,000 from a peak of more than 100,000.

His tribute also took place against a backdrop of the increasingly complex U.S.led effort to help Iraq defeat the Islamic State extremist group, which has been gaining momentum in recent weeks by capturing Ramadi there and taking Palmyra in neighboring Syria.

Obama made no mention of America’s participation with other nations in the effort to stop the Islamic State.

His effort there has come under intensifying criticism since the fall of Ramadi with lawmakers calling for a bigger show of American force there, including ground troops.

Vice President Joe Biden spoke Monday with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and pledged full U.S. support for Iraqi efforts to reclaim territory from the

Islamic State, including by speeding up the provision of U.S. training and equipment, the White House said.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter had said in a nationally broadcast interview aired Sunday that Iraqi forces “showed no will to fight” and fled as the Islamic State advanced on Ramadi. The White House said in a statement that Biden’s call “recognized the enormous sacrifice and bravery of Iraqi forces during the past 18 months in Ramadi and elsewhere.”

In his remarks at Arlington National Cemetery, Obama said most of the remaining troops should be removed from Afghanistan by the end of 2016.

He recognized the more than 2,200 “patriots” who sacrificed themselves in Afghanistan, including the final two to be killed before the U.S. combat mission ended late last year. He also recognized the first American killed during the “new mission” to train Afghan forces, an Army medic who died in April.

Cleveland reaches deal with Justice on policing

By ERIC TUCKER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The city of Cleveland has reached a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department over a pattern of excessive force and civil rights violations by the police department, and the agreement could be announced as soon as Tuesday, a senior federal law enforcement official said.

The official was not authorized to speak publicly of the settlement ahead of the official announcement and spoke Monday on condition of anonymity.

News of the settlement comes days after a white police officer was acquitted of manslaughter for firing the

final 15 rounds of a 137-shot police barrage through the windshield of a car carrying two black, unarmed suspects in 2012. The suspects’ backfiring vehicle had been mistaken for a gunshot, leading to a high-speed chase involving 62 police cruisers.

Once the suspects were cornered, 13 officers fired at the car.

The case prompted an 18-month Justice Department investigation into the practices of the Cleveland police. In a scathing report released in December, the department required the city to devise a plan to reform the police force.

The specifics of the settlement, first reported by The New York Times, were not available Monday.

Messages left with Justice Department spokeswoman Dena Iverson and the police department seeking comment weren’t returned.

The Justice Department’s report spared no one in the police chain of command. The worst examples of excessive force involved patrol officers who endangered lives by shooting at suspects and cars, hit people over the head with guns and used stun guns on handcuffed suspects.

Supervisors and police higher-ups received some of the report’s most searing criticism. The Justice Department said officers were poorly trained and some didn’t know how to implement use-of-force policies. The report also said officers are ill-equipped.

In Rhode Island, residents gush about paid family leave

By JENNIFER McDERMOTT The Associated Press PROVIDENCE, R.I. – As President Barack Obama pushes for a federal law to get paid leave to care for a new baby or an ailing relative, residents of one of the three states that already provide it sing its praises, hinting at the reception it could receive if rolled out nationally.

Rhode Island last year began allowing workers to take up to four weeks of paid leave.

Many workers said they love the program, and employers said it hasn’t hurt business as some had feared.

Anne Quirk of Providence had planned to take three months of unpaid leave from her job as a speech language pathologist after she gave birth.

But she needed five months off after her doctor ordered her on bedrest on Mother’s Day last year; then, her son was born prematurely in June.

“It was just such a stress reliever, knowing there was going to be money to help us pay the bills,” said Quirk, who gushed about the program to Obama when he visited Rhode Island in October. “I don’t

About 5,000 people have taken paid family leave in Rhode Island so far. New Jersey and California are the other states that provide it, and several states are considering it.

Washington state passed legislation but has put off implementing it.

The United States is the only industrialized nation that doesn’t mandate paid leave for mothers of newborns. Obama wants Congress to allocate more than $2 billion to help states create paid family and medical leave programs, and he wants to provide federal workers with added paid leave.

Rhode Island has a long-standing program that pays a portion of an employee’s salary when he or she is

unable to work because of illness or injury. The temporary caregiver insurance program was folded into that existing program to compensate workers who leave their jobs temporarily to care for a relative or bond with a new baby.

Workers pay for both through a payroll deduction.

The benefit for family leave amounts to about 60 percent of an worker’s regular paycheck, capped at $770 a week. Employees received a total of $6.3 million in payments in 2014.

Not every worker can get the benefit. Some haven’t paid enough into the system, and public-sector employees don’t pay for the insurance.

Obama said during the October visit that Rhode Island “has got the right idea” and that the nation needs to broaden its laws for family leave.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, seeking to succeed Obama as president, has advocated for it.

Democrats haven’t been able to garner enough support for a bill in Congress to allow workers to earn up to seven days of paid sick leave to care for themselves or a sick relative, obtain preventive care or treat domestic violence.

Mobile computers that are supposed to be in patrol cars often don’t work and, even when they do, officers don’t have access to essential department databases, according to the report.

Police Chief Calvin Williams said in December that while it’s not easy to have to share the federal government findings with his 1,500-member department, he is committed to change.

“The people of this city need to know we will work to make the police department better,” Williams said.

The agency said supervisors encouraged some of the bad behavior and often did little to investigate it. Some told the Justice Department that they often wrote their reports

to make an officer look as good as possible, the federal agency said. The department found that only six officers had been suspended for improper use of force over a three-year period.

The investigation was the second time in recent years the Justice Department has taken the Cleveland police to task over the use of force. But unlike in 2004, when the agency left it up to local police to clean up their act, federal authorities this time have been negotiating a consent decree designed to serve as a blueprint for lasting change within the police department. Several other police departments in the country now operate under federal consent decrees that involve independent oversight.

Police: Pressure cooker in D.C. vehicle destroyed The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – A bomb squad safely destroyed a pressure cooker found in an unattended vehicle parked on the National Mall near the U.S. Capitol and the vehicle’s owner was found and arrested, a U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman said.

Police Lt. Kimberly A. Schneider told The Associated Press that Capitol Police officers on routine patrol spotted the parked, unoccupied vehicle on a street on the mall west of the Capitol around 5 p.m. Sunday.

“Further investigation revealed a pressure cooker, and an odor of gasoline was detected,” Schneider said, adding a Capitol Police bomb squad was called in because the vehicle was deemed “suspicious in nature.”

Authorities have noted that pressure cookers have been used in the past to create explosive devices. Three people were killed and more than 260 others wounded in April 2013 when two pressure-cooker bombs were set off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Schneider said the bomb

squad destroyed “items of concern in the vehicle including the pressure cooker” Sunday around 7:45 p.m. after temporarily closing off the area on the long Memorial Day holiday weekend. She did not immediately identify the other items but said only that “this safe disruption produced a loud bang.”

Schneider also said a follow-up search of the vehicle found nothing hazardous.

Her email said the suspicious vehicle was investigated during a concert in Washington though it was unclear how many people were nearby at the time.

The vehicle’s owner was found and identified as Israel Shimeles of the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, Schneider said.

Shimeles was arrested and charged with “operating after revocation,” Schneider said. Schneider didn’t elaborate on the charge. It wasn’t immediately known if he had an attorney.

Schneider also said the city’s Metropolitan Police, U.S. Park Police, the U.S. Secret Service, the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force were assisting Capitol Police.

Afghan official: 19 police, 7 soldiers dead

By MIRWAIS KHAN The Associated Press KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Taliban gunmen have surrounded a police compound in the volatile southern province of Helmand after killing 19 policemen and seven soldiers in an ongoing siege, a senior police officer said on Monday from inside the compound.

Napas Khan, the police chief in the Naw Zad district, told The Associated Press by telephone that the insurgents had advanced to within 65 feet of the compound after seizing police vehicles and weapons and blocking all roads out of Naw Zad. “We need an immediate response from the govern-

ment,” Khan said.

He said the attack started at before dawn on Monday when the insurgents overran multiple police checkpoints across the district.

“They destroyed or captured most of our checkpoints and now they have reached our police headquarters,” Khan said. “They are mostly firing at us from the hills overlooking our compound.”

As Khan spoke, gunfire and shouting could be heard in the background.

Helmand has long been a heartland for the Taliban, who profit heavily from opium produced in its fertile river valley.

Government forces launched an operation

against the insurgents in March, in the hope of reducing the impact of the Taliban’s annual warm weather offensive. Since that offensive was launched, however, in late April, attacks across the country have intensified, spreading government forces thin.

As well as the time-worn guerrilla-style tactics of fight-and-run, the insurgents have also stepped up suicide attacks and, in some areas, targeted assassinations and kidnappings.

Also on Monday, a suicide truck bomb attack and a separate roadside bombing in southern Afghanistan killed 11 people and wounded dozens more, as the Taliban clashed with supporters of

the Islamic State group in the west, officials said.

Gov. Asif Nang said the Taliban have been clashing with rival insurgents claiming allegiance to the IS group for three days in the western Farah province, leaving at least 10 Taliban fighters and 15 IS supporters dead. He provided no further details.

The clashes provide the latest indication of a small but growing Islamic State presence in the country. Afghan and foreign officials differ over the extent to which the extremist group, which rules large parts of Syria and Iraq, is able to operate in Afghanistan – where the Taliban have been waging war against the Western-backed government for more than a decade.

Biden’s call followed harsh criticism from Iraqi and Iranian quarters after Carter questioned Iraqi forces’ “will to fight” the surging Islamic State group.

A White House statement on Monday describing Biden’s call said the vice president welcomed an Iraqi decision to mobilize additional troops and “prepare for counterattack operations.” Biden also pledged full U.S. support to “these and other Iraqi efforts to liberate territory from ISIL,” the statement said, using an acronym for Islamic State.

In reaction to Carter’s remarks, which were aired Sunday in a TV interview, a spokesman for Iraq’s prime minister suggested the defense secretary had “incorrect information,” while Gen. Qassim Soleimani, the head of the elite Quds forces in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, offered his own critical assessment of U.S. forces.

The heated exchanges came after the loss of Ramadi and amid other gains by the IS in recent days. The statements laid bare fissures among countries that have become allies of convenience against the militants. The criticism from both Iraq and Iran began when Carter told CNN’s “State of the Union” that Iraqi forces “vastly outnumbered” the Islamic State group, but still “showed no will to fight” and fled the IS advance on the capital of Anbar province.

CIUDAD ACUNA, Mexico – A tornado raged through a city on the U.S.-Mexico border Monday, destroying homes, flinging cars like matchsticks and ripping an infant from its mother’s arms. At least 13 people were killed, authorities said.

In Texas, 12 people were reported missing after the vacation home they were staying in was swept away by rushing floodwaters in a small town popular with tourists.

The baby was also missing after the twister that hit Ciudad Acuna, a city of 125,000 across from Del Rio, Texas, sent its infant carrier flying. Rescue workers began digging through the rubble of damaged homes in a race to find victims.

The twister hit a seven-block area, which Victor Zamora, interior secretary of the northern state of Coahuila, described as “devastated.”

Mayor Evaristo Perez Rivera said 300 people were being treated at local hospitals, and up to 200 homes had been completely destroyed. Three people were unaccounted

dumped record rainfall on parts of the Plains and Midwest, spawning tornadoes and causing major flooding that forced at least 2,000 Texans from their homes.

Witnesses reported seeing the swollen Blanco River push the vacation house off its foundation and smash it into a bridge. Only pieces of the home have been found, according to Hays County Judge Bert Cobb.

One person who was rescued from the home told workers that the other 12 inside were all connected to two families, Cobb said.

The house was in Wimberley Valley, an area known for its bed-and-breakfast inns and weekend rental cottages.

Dana Campbell, a retired engineer who lives on a bluff above the river, said the floodwaters left behind damage that resembled the path of a tornado “as far as the eye can see.”

The storms were blamed for three deaths Saturday and Sunday, including two in Oklahoma and one in Texas, where a man’s body was recovered from a flooded area along the Blanco River, which rose 26 feet in an hour and created huge piles of debris.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank you for cleaning up St. Pat’s Neighborhood area To the Editor: On behalf of the St. Pat’s Neighborhood Association, we would like to thank the Joliet Job Corps Center students for the cleanup work they did in the St. Pat’s area on the afternoon of May 2, on a day declared by the Joliet City Council as “Joliet City Wide Clean Up Day.” These students, along with Stewart Warren, Joliet Job Corps business community liaison, did a great job and primarily worked on the areas bordered by Willow, Morgan, Hunter and Marion. Park and the alley behind it along with Seeser Street.

Lawmakers still worlds apart in Springfield I spent the better part of Wednesday asking folks around the Statehouse if they had anything positive to tell me. I went looking for anything that might indicate a silver lining to this increasingly nasty spring legislative session.

Mostly, people just laughed at me.

Other than some individual personal developments, there just wasn’t much positivity around. The governor’s chief of staff, Mike Zolnierowicz, and his incomparable wife, Barret, were about to have a new baby. They’re great people, and that’s wonderful news, but it also means “Z” was not going to be able to work on solving the problems for a few days.

A gaming expansion bill appeared to be progressing.

But I’m told the governor is in no mood to sign it as long as his “Turnaround Agenda” is being ignored by the majority Democrats.

The Senate Democrats, meanwhile, were expected to move legislation to help

Chicago out of its horrific fiscal mess, but there’s still the problem with the governor’s refusal to do anything for the Democrats until he gets what he wants.

So, I came up with nothing.

The governor’s list of demands had been whittled down, but he still wasn’t backing off his insistence that the General Assembly give him at least some anti-union “right to work” local zones. He wanted a “causation” standard for workers’ compensation and a property tax freeze – which, even in watered-down forms, continued to be a nonstarter.

The list of demands went on and on. But in exchange, the governor was willing to support $3.5 billion in new revenues, which doesn’t sound too bad until you realize he also wanted the Democrats to agree to $3 billion in spending cuts.

The governor’s folks thought they were being generous by offering more revenues than cuts, but the Democrats pointed out getting their people to vote for both

VIEWS Rich Miller tax hikes and huge spending cuts was pretty much impossible.

Instead, the Dems talked last week about sending the governor an unbalanced budget, telling him to cut as much as he could and then they’d come back and help provide the revenue to make the monster balance. They wanted to put the cuts on Rauner’s head, and his head only.

But it was more likely Rauner simply would veto the budget bill in its entirety and harangue the Democrats via a massive TV ad campaign for once again producing an “irresponsibly unbalanced budget.” And I’m hearing that when the clock strikes June 1, the governor’s list of 80 demands and concessions goes out the window and he will put his entire agenda back on the table and withdraw all the concessions, including (and

especially) much-needed new revenues.

So, in an admittedly desperate attempt to find something positive to write about, I maneuvered two people – one from each side – to a table Wednesday night to see if they could hash out one little thing.

Take it from me, these guys are all talking past each other. They just don’t understand each other, and really don’t even comprehend one another, although it did appear the governor’s people were slightly more willing to cut a deal and they appeared to “get” the Democrats at least a bit more than the Dems appeared to “get” the governor.

The Rauner folks know, at least somewhere deep down, that attacking unions is an existential issue for the Democratic Party. The Dems ain’t gonna move a millimeter on that one. But the Rauner folks have been pointing out that raising taxes is also a potentially existential issue for Rauner and the GOP. He can’t just break his promise

to reform government and the economy and then hand the majority party a gigantic tax hike. He’ll get slaughtered for that. Maybe the Dems know that and want to force him to cut his own political throat, or, being Democrats, they just don’t comprehend how tax-averse he is. But as long as he’s willing to go part way on revenues, they’re going to try and push him to go the full boat.

And then I got home Wednesday night and read Rauner’s op-ed in the State Journal-Register. “If legislators are willing to reform how we do business, they will find me an eager partner,” the governor wrote. “If they are not, then they should expect a very long extra session because I will keep fighting for major reforms.”

As I said, I got pretty much nothing in the way of good news. Sorry.

Lockport ready for upcoming challenges

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – On a day when two other boys volleyball matches in the Minooka Regional quarterfinals went down to the wire, Lockport did its best to avoid such drama.

Although Joliet Central put up a good fight in the opener, the Porters easily took care of business in the second set and captured a 25-18, 25-6 victory.

Lockport (29-5) advances to Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal with Joliet West (23-11), which rallied past Plainfield South, 25-21, 27-29, 25-23, in the last quarterfinal match.

The two squads met just last week, with the Porters claiming a 26-24, 25-18 win over West.

Lockport coach Nick Mraz and his squad realize all too well that everything they hope to accomplish from now on will have to be hard-earned.

But as is evidenced by their season thus far, the Porters have been so successful because they don’t feature any one star performer but rather a number of dangerous threats.

“In this regional, it’s a matter of who’s the hot team – who’s connecting and clicking since, on any given night, any of these teams can win,” Mraz said. “You work all season to get to this point and, hopefully, we’re there and we’re ready. The success that we had winning the tight battles and beating good teams is all preparation for this. Now, it’s just win or go home.

“There are a lot of teams in this regional who have a standout player; but with us, we’re very balanced and consistent. The guys just work well together, they know each others’ tendencies, and they’re friends on and off the court. At any given time, we have three threats in the front row – it’s hard for teams to hone in on something. We have six players with over 130 kills this season, and that doesn’t happen very often.”

Meanwhile, the Porters countered with five kills from Matt Sadler, two apiece from Albert Sinram, Mike Karl and Phil Holle, and three others with one kill each.

In the finale, Central only trailed, 6-4, but suffered a big loss when Brayden Thompson had to exit with an injury.

Lockport responded with a 12-0 run that featured eight aces from Anthony Pfeiffer (14 assists). Sadler finished with six kills, Karl had five kills, and Danny Woulfe added nine digs.

rotation, the Porters are a veteran squad. But they also feature one of the few freshman starters in the area – Pfeiffer – who not only sets but also is part of the attack.

“We’re excited about how we’re doing right now, and we feel pretty confident,” Pfeiffer said. “This is one of the toughest regionals, and I think whoever wins it could go to state.

We win as a team or we lose as a team – it’s not just individuals – and when we’re playing good, I feel like we can beat anybody.

“The team has brought me in, and it’s been fun from the start. We’re pretty close, since a lot of the guys play for the same team. Actually, me and our libero are the ones who are playing on a different team. I could feel the closeness of our team the first time I came in.”

CHANNAHON – Less than a week ago, the Minooka boys volleyball team clinched the Southwest Prairie Conference title with a 25-18, 22-25, 25-23 win over Plainfield Central.

On Monday, the two teams met again in the quarterfinal of the Minooka Regional, with berth against top-seeded Joliet Catholic Academy at stake.

On their home floor, the Indians (22-13) got off to a strong start, racing to a 15-5 lead in the opening set en route to a 25-12 win. Plainfield Central rebounded, however, and won the second set, 25-22, before claiming victory in the final set, 27-25, to advance to the next round.

“We lost to them last Wednesday by two points in the third set,” Plainfield Central coach Alex Hurlburt said. “All week in practice, we were analyzing everything we could, trying to figure out how we could make up those two points.

“After we lost the first set, I told the guys that any team can lose a first set. The key is how you adjust to it in the next set. We might not be the biggest or fastest team, but we are one of the smartest. I credit our guys with being able to make the adjustments that we needed to.”

Minooka got a bulk of its offensive firepower from Brandon Baranski (21 kills) and Danny Beaudin (eight kills), while Gage Wuestenfeld (14 kills) and Wes Rogman (six kills) were the go-to hitters for Plainfield Central.

Minooka’s Shane Chetney went on a service point run for the ages in the first set after a Baranski kill got the Indians the serve with the set tied at 5.

By the time Chetney was done, he had two aces, and Minooka led, 16-5. In the run were kills

by Grant Ooms, a block by Luke Hermann and a kill and a block by Baranski. Armed with the big lead, the Indians cruised the rest of the way to the victory.

Plainfield Central held the lead for most of the second set, except for an early stretch that saw three straight Baranski kills give the Indians a 6-4 advantage. The Wildcats rallied to go ahead, 10-7, then 12-9. Minooka tightened up the game, tying the set at 14 before taking a 17-14 lead. Plainfield Central got consecutive blocks

from Chad Badertscher and Wuestenfeld to tie it at 17 before going ahead for good at 21-20 on a kill by Wuestenfeld.

A kill by Minooka’s Hermann brought the Indians to within 24-22, but a Wuestenfeld kill ended it and forced the decisive third set.

Plainfield Central held the advantage early on, leading until Minooka tied it at 13.

There were then ties at 14, 15, 16 and 17 before Minooka went ahead, 19-17, on a tip kill

by Chetney. Plainfield Central countered with two straight points to tie it at 19 and then it was tied at 20 before Central went up, 22-20, on a Minooka hitting error and a Wuestenfeld kill.

Minooka then tied it at 23 on a kill by Baranski. Wuestenfeld got a kill to put Central ahead, 24-23, but a hitting error gave Minooka the serve with the set tied at 24. Baranski got a service point on a Central hitting error, but Rogman tied it with a block and took over the serve

tied at 25. Minooka committed a four-hits violation to make it 26-25, and Central won it when setter Noah Randall delivered a tip kill.

“We made a lot of changes after the first set,” Hurlburt said. “In the first set, their middle was able to get a lot of attacks to his right. We shut that off, and we did a much better job on serve receive of moving our feet.

“We haven’t seen JCA yet this year, and it can be fun to see a team that’s fresh instead of seeing one you’ve faced two or three times already. We’ll come out with a clean slate Tuesday and see what happens.”

“We only had four seniors this year, and only one senior starter,” Grzetich said. “This year of experience should help the juniors that will be seniors next year. They are competitive kids, and I am a competitive coach. They are a fun group to coach, and they should start next year with pretty high expectations.”

Plainfield South overwhelms Joliet Central

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Late in the baseball season, Plainfield South’s pitching staff went on a record-setting pace for stinginess.

If and when the offense stepped up, the Cougars would have to be considered a threat in the postseason.

South (23-10), the No. 4 seed in the five-team Class 4A Joliet West Regional, scored in every inning Monday afternoon and coasted past No. 5 Joliet Central, 14-1, to earn a berth in Wednesday’s semifinal at Joliet West against No. 1 seed Bradley.

Monday’s game, originally scheduled for an 11 a.m. start, began at 4 p.m. at South as Cougars’ coaches and ground

crew members had a full day of work getting the wet field ready.

The Steelmen (10-22) did themselves proud early, scoring an earned run against South senior right-hander Easton Frisby in the first inning. The Cougars just came off a streak where they tied a state record with 46 consecutive scoreless innings and went 55 innings without allowing an earned run.

“Yeah, that’s not like us,” Frisby smiled, referring to yielding a first-inning run. “I was probably a little anxious with the crowd here and was getting my pitches high early. Then I got them down, we made plays, and we got great hitting. It was great to see this hitting showcase.”

dez opened the game with a double into the left-field corner. Red-hot Luke DeBenedetti cracked the first of his two singles to put runners on the corners, and Christian Smith lifted a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, however, the Steelmen committed three errors that led to four South runs. The Cougars also scored four times in the second and third innings and two in the fourth as the game ended in 4½ innings.

“We picked the wrong time to play one of our worst games,” Central coach Kevin Fitzgerald said. “We gave them five or six outs in the first inning, and what was upsetting was that it was communication.

“It’s tough, because we

fought so hard all year to get ready for this. But props to South. They followed their game plan, and Frisby is a very good pitcher. We had chances against him early but didn’t get the big hit.”

The Steelmen stranded seven runners in the first three innings. Meanwhile, once South built the 4-1 first-inning cushion, the Cougars kept the merry-go-round alive, finishing with 13 hits in their four innings at the plate.

Marco Melgoza had two doubles, a single and five RBIs – three on a bases-loaded double in the third inning. Nick Mayerhofer singled and doubled, and Konnor Ash had two hits, and both drove in runs.

fly, and Gabe Wair got a single and two RBIs. “We came out hitting, and we needed it big-time to help out our pitching staff,” Melgoza said. “The game comes easy when everybody is hitting like that.”

“We haven’t hit like that all year,” South coach Phil Bodine said. “It was nice to let our pitcher relax and throw mostly fastballs.

“Marco [Melgoza] had a great day and has been hitting tremendously all year. Konnor Ash hit the ball hard today, too.”

Next up for South is that shot against Bradley, with Iowa-bound right-hander Shane Ritter scheduled to pitch. If the Cougars advance, Frisby said he will be ready to pitch in Saturday’s regional final.

Joliet West rallies to edge Plainfield South

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Joliet West boys volleyball coach Jason Herrmann knew all too well his squad was just about down for the count when it fell behind, 13-4, in the third set of Monday’s Minooka Regional quarterfinal match with Plainfield South.

But while the Cougars edged closer to pulling off the upset, the Tigers decided they wanted their season to continue a little longer.

West outscored South, 2110, down the stretch to prevail in a wild 25-21, 27-29, 2523 match that capped a day in which two of the three contests were nailbiters. As a result, the Tigers (23-11) advance to Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal against Lockport (29-5).

“At every timeout, we talked about just trusting each other and that the only way that we’d get back into it is if every guy worked together since one guy couldn’t get 10 points,” Herrmann said. “And South didn’t make many mistakes, and they were blocking.

At our last timeout, I told our guys that all they could do was play hard, and it’s either win or go home.

“They’ve improved, and their outside hit really well, and he was hitting hard off of our block, and we didn’t have an answer, and their middle also played well. But the bottom line is that we get the ‘W’ and get to move on.”

Leading the Tigers in the comeback win were Luke Van Eck (17 kills), Juwann Jackson (12 kills), Kyler Van Rossum-O’Connell (42 assists, 10 digs) and Chris Beltran (10 digs).

South (15-16) used a 7-0 run to go up, 11-3, and still owned a 19-13 advantage after Brandon Langys got a kill and Rhome Apton added a block.

But Max Ahern, Van Eck and Jackson got kills to make it 19-17, then Jackson got a kill, Van Rossum-O’Connell and Matt Wyman shared a block, and Van Eck served an ace to give the Tigers a 22-21 lead.

Jackson and Scott Lyman added two late kills.

The Cougars showed just as much composure in the second set when they overcame three match points to score four of the final points. The Tigers led, 24-23, after a hitting error, but a long serve tied the score.

South grabbed a 27-26 advantage on an ace by Cody Viertel, but a net serve tied the score again. However, Langys and Logan Nash finally ended the middle set with kills.

“I’ve been coaching some of these guys for three years, and I’m proud of what they did today since they went out swinging,” Cougars coach Taryn Surbaugh said. “The guys busted their butts today, and that’s all that I can ask from them.

“I’m sad to lose my setter, Adam Burt. But sophomore outside Logan Nash stepped up; and my other outside, Brandon Langys, is also a sophomore; and my middle,

Rhome Apton, is a junior.

We’ll get there, and I hope that one of these days it will fall in our direction.”

In the opener, South took an 18-14 lead, but the Tigers answered with a 5-0 run, with Van Eck supplying two kills.

Langys responded with a kill to tie it at 19, then Viertel did the same to make it 20-all, but West scored five of the next six points, with Lyman and Ahern getting kills to spark a final 3-0 burst.

Despite seeing his squad fall in a tough fashion in his final match, South setter Burt said he is proud of how far the program has come not only this season, but in the past few years.

“I’m definitely proud since this was probably our best game all season,” Burt said.

“We saw them in the Minooka tournament and lost pretty badly. West has had a fantastic season, so I’m glad that we went out swinging against them. We’ve made so much improvement since coach Surbaugh entered the program.

There’s a different intensity than in previous years.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN FRANCISCO – The Chicago Bears released defensive end Ray McDonald following a domestic violence arrest in that police say stemmed from an assault on a woman holding a baby.

McDonald was taken into custody at 7 a.m. Monday on suspicion of domestic violence and child endangerment, Santa Clara police said.

Police said the assault happened at his home in San-

ta Clara. He was found about three hours later at a home in San Jose and arrested. Police did not say if the woman or the baby was injured.

The Bears released a statement Monday. “We believe in second chances, but when we signed Ray we were very clear what our expectations were if he was to remain a Bear,” General Manager Ryan Pace said in the statement. “He was not able to meet the standard, and the decision was made to release him.”

CHICAGO – Tanner Roark made a successful return to Washington’s rotation on Monday. It was as if he never left.

Roark, a Wilmington High School grad, pitched five effective innings, Wilson Ramos hit a tiebreaking homer, and the Nationals beat the Cubs, 2-1, in the first major league matchup of young sluggers Bryce Harper and Cubs rookie Kris Bryant.

Making his first start of the season in place of the injured Doug Fister, Roark (1-2) allowed Bryant’s sixth home run and struck out three. Four relievers combined for four innings of two-hit ball, with Drew Storen working the ninth for his NL-best 15th save in 16 attempts – closing out the five-hitter.

Roark won 15 games last season but was shifted to the bullpen when Washington signed free agent Max Scherzer. The Wilmington native had a large contingent of friends and family in the stands.

Hutchison pitches Jays past Sox

TORONTO – Drew Hutchison pitched a four-hitter, Justin Smoak and Josh Donaldson homered and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the White Sox, 6-0, on Monday night.

Hutchison (4-1) allowed four singles, walked none and struck out eight while throwing just 96 pitches.

The Blue Jays won consecutive games for the first time since a three-game streak from May 6-9. The loss in the opener of a season-long, 11-game trip stopped a fivegame road win streak for the Sox. The Sox have dropped six of seven overall.

Catering to needs of dying patients Dr. Orenic looks back on 25 years at Joliet Area Community Hospice

Retired Dr. Raymond Orenic plans to play his mandolin more now that he has retired after 25 years as the sole full-time physician at the Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – In 1990, when a physician friend asked Dr. Raymond Orenic of Joliet to help with a hospice program, Orenic had to admit he knew little about hospice care.

“I had to extend my knowledge about end-of-life care and terminal illnesses,” Orenic said. “I had to learn to refocus on the patient, not the disease.”

But, Orenic said, it was an easy transition for him, and he cared for hospice patients until he retired a few weeks ago. Over time, Orenic refined his care, focusing on the dying individual and his or her family, not simply on treatment.

“I had my eyes opened many times as to the proper way to handle a situation,” Orenic said. “People have a right to choose what they want done. Some want all the treatment in the world; some just want to be comfortable and let the natural course of events take over. We should understand and respect that.”

Over the years, Orenic has worked in private practice and at the Glenwood Medical Group. For the past 25 years, he has been at the Joliet Area Community Hospice as its sole full-time physician.

Path to medicine

Orenic had several reasons for choosing a medical career.

He was a good student, so when a biology professor urged his students to do what they did best, Orenic chose medicine. It was a challenge, he said, but it made his parents – who had little formal education – proud.

Most physicians starting out in 1972 became general practitioners, Orenic said.

There were few specialists, and Orenic said he often treated several generations of the same family.

During the past two years, Orenic has noted about 20 changes regarding rules for visiting patients and how it’s reported, as well as electronic record keeping.

“It was an honor and a pleasure to take care of people I knew,” Orenic said. “In the old days, the GP looked after family and patient as a person, from birth to death. Some of that was lost as we became a profession.”

The Joliet Area Community Hospice was the first free-standing, in-patient hospice unit in Illinois, and Orenic said he believes JACH still is the best. Just four people served it when it opened, Orenic added.

It has since grown to 140 people, including one full-time physician, several part-time

physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains and 250 trained volunteers, Orenic said.

During his time at JACH, Orenic also witnessed the beginnings of the Medicare program.

“Medicare benefits lots of folks,” Orenic said. “Like most things in medicine, there is a business aspect. I’m not sure that medicine has changed, but the rules have changed.”

Often, these rules are made by people not operating the program or without sufficient physician input, Orenic said.

Still, for all the changes, hospice care restored the dignity of the dying patient, which Orenic appreciated.

“In the old days, we had hospice-like care and catered to the needs of the dying patient,” Orenic said. “Most families died at home. Mine did. Hospice was a way back to that.”

Orenic enjoyed mentoring senior medical students and giving them opportunities to see hospice doctors, nurses and chaplains in action.

Although many of those students chose family surgery, he believes they gained valuable perspective on the essence of hospice care.

“I think the rules on how you live your life direct how you handle hospice,” Orenic said. “Follow the Golden Rule: Treat people like you would like to be treated.”

At 75, Orenic believes it is a good time to retire. He’s looking forward to traveling and to maybe sleep in once in a while.

“It has been my honor and privilege to be a hospice physician. We’ll see how retirement goes,” Orenic said.

“I hope it is half as good as it was when I was working.”

FRANKFORT – Staff members from Grand Prairie Elementary School walked as a team May 17 in the Walk of Hope.

This annual event is sponsored by the Mokena Cancer Support Center, which provides free resources to help people improve their quality of life during the cancer experience.

The Grand Prairie team won the trophy for the most money raised by a school or organization. Grand Prairie students Jake Lee, Ben Erdsfeld, Matthew Erdsfeld, Evan Riff, Payton Lee and Avery Riff accepted the trophy on behalf of the team.

Before the walk, the team raised funds through the creation of a T-shirt drawing contest that was won by second-grader Abby Bunch. The special T-shirts featuring Abby’s design were worn by the team in the race.

Certified child passenger safety techs at fire district

MANHATTAN – The Manhattan Fire Protection District now has nationally certified child passenger safety technicians on staff.

These CPS technicians have undergone four days of training and must earn continuing education units every two years in order to stay certified.

The Manhattan Fire Protection District urges parents and caregivers to make sure their car

seats are properly installed. Manhattan will have certified technicians available, by appointment, to provide free hands-on car seat inspections and advice.

NEW LENOX — Along with several hundred families and business leaders, the Silver Cross Women and Infant Services Birthing Center employees and their families participated in the March of Dimes 3.2-mile March for Babies on May 9 at Joliet West High School.

The annual March for Babies is the nation’s oldest fundraiser walk honoring babies born healthy and those who need help to survive and thrive.

The Silver Cross team – OB Nurses are Preemie Donnas – received an award as the top corporate team by raising $2,117 for the 2015 March of Dimes Walk. Registered nurses Vickie Ricketts and Laurie Holmes were the team captains for Silver Cross Hospital.

JOLIET – An idea Troy students brainstormed two years ago may become a reality this summer.

Students at the K-4 Troy Craughwell Elementary School in Joliet – a Troy District 30C school – may join the Mileage Club in physical education class.

If they walk a total of 26.2 miles in the gym or on the playground during one school year, they are honored into the Mileage Hall of Fame and get their pictures posted on the gym wall.

So fourth-grade students Luke Pekol, Cooper Bartz and Zach Pekol – along with fellow third- and fourth-grade students William Ogrizovich, Max Racutt and Zachary Taylor – led the effort begun two years ago to get a circuit track at the playground behind Craughwell.

The result was “The 2015 Boosterthon Fun Run,” a school-community fundraiser where the community pledged dollars for the number of laps Craughwell students could walk in the gym on the event day.

The goal was $7,000, according to Principal Kathy Barker.

The amount raised was more than $14,000. The fundraiser also included a door-decorating contest, team huddles, prizes and a kick-off assembly.

Barker said Phase 1 of the project will consist of laying the track along the periphery of the playground. More fundraising will be needed for Phase 2, which will involve installing various circuit apparatus at stops along the track.

FRANKFORT – A successful fundraising walk by Grand Prairie Elementary School kindergarten through second grade students at school raised $19,927 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The event was coordinated by Grand Prairie physical education instructors Rob Seibert, Richard Innocenti and Lori McCurdy.

Students walked during their physical education classes to music provided by Randy Ridderhoff of Awesome DJ’s and PhotoBooth, www.awesomedjs. com. Ridderhoff donated his services to provide music and encouragement to the students as they walked.

The JDRF Kids Walk program is an educational, in-school fundraising program with two goals: to educate students about type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and to provide them with an opportunity to make a difference by raising money for type 1 diabetes research. The program helps foster an environment of positive character building and community service. Students are recognized with a banner and awards.

This is the same deal as in yesterday’s column, but in one of my classes, a woman holding the South cards made a very heavy weak jump overcall of three hearts. This understandably was passed out. How did the defense go against three hearts?

I had anticipated South’s intervening with two hearts, West’s raising to two spades, and East’s jumping to four spades. Then, as explained yesterday, East gets home by ruffing his low heart with dummy’s spade jack.

Against three hearts, West led her lowest spade. South saw four top losers (two hearts and two diamonds), so thought she would have to find the club queen to make her contract. However, after she won the first trick with dummy’s spade ace and led a trump, East went in with her king and shifted to her singleton club.

Declarer took that and played a high trump to East’s ace. Now East had to get West on lead to receive a club ruff. But did West hold the spade king or diamond ace?

West knew that her partner had led a singleton club. She had carefully dropped a suit-preference club three at trick three and also had played lowhigh in trumps.

So East, getting the message, led her diamond nine. West overtook and gave her partner the club ruff. Then East cashed the diamond king for down one. Pretty!

skin cancer, squamous cell cancer. High-risk cases are those most likely to return. Mohs also is more often the choice when either of these cancers is on the face.

The goal of Mohs surgery is to remove all of the cancer cells while preserving as much of the normal tissue around the cancer as possible.

The more normal tissue that is preserved, the smaller the scar and the better the cosmetic result.

The surgery is done in steps. The surgeon shaves away the tumor in thin layers, one layer at a time. Each layer is immediately checked under a microscope.

This process is repeated until the outer edge of the removed layer (the margin) is free of cancer cells. This allows the surgeon to preserve as much healthy skin as possible while making sure that all of the cancer is removed.

Mohs surgery is performed under local anesthesia. The procedure typically takes two to four hours. Much of that time is spent waiting while the removed tissue is analyzed, to see if the margin is cancer-free.

The cure rate for basal cell skin cancers with Mohs surgery is close to 100 percent.

For the best results, be sure the doctor who performs your Mohs surgery has expertise in the technique.

The surgical staff should be trained to process and evaluate each layer of tissue quickly and accurately.

Dear Doctor K: I have basal cell skin cancer on my face and am scheduled to have Mohs surgery. Can you describe what will happen during the procedure?

Dear Reader: Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Basal cell cancer is a very slow-growing type of skin cancer. It is unlikely to spread to other parts of the body, and therefore is rarely life-threatening. The most common cause of basal cell cancer is damage from sun exposure.

Basal cell carcinoma begins in basal cells, which are located deep in the skin. When these basal cells turn cancerous, they invade surrounding tissues, spreading downward and outward below the skin’s surface.

Basal cell cancer occurs most often on the skin near the eyes, nose, lips and ears. That’s because the skin in these areas is most likely to be exposed to sunlight. Basal cell cancers can form elsewhere on the body, as well.

When it starts, the cancer forms a small, smooth, painless white or pink bump. The bump later becomes an open ulcer with a hard edge.

Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized procedure that has two main advantages. First, it is better than the traditional technique at seeing the edges (“margins”) of the cancer, thereby assuring the surgeon that all of the cancer has been removed. Second, it gives a better cosmetic result.

Mohs surgery is usually the first choice for removing high-risk basal cell skin cancers. It also is the usual first choice for high-risk cases of a second common type of
