Area pools getting ready to open following cold winter

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com Operators of the area’s outdoor public pools are hoping for a hot season following this year’s long, cold winter.

Workers at Joliet’s Splash Station Waterpark are busy putting the finishing touches on the lazy river, slides, tunnels and pools ahead of the facility’s season opener scheduled for May 31.

“Obviously winter stuck around longer that we would have liked, but we’re looking at some pretty good weather going into the opening,” Suzanne Ringbauer, Splash Station’s aquatics coordinator, said Thursday.

Visitors appear to be anticipating the opening, as well.

Purchases of season passes are up about 100 sales over last year’s 3,000, Ringbauer said.

“The numbers were down last summer because it was so cold,” Ringbauer said.

“We’re hoping to have a big comeback this year with better weather.”

The long winter pushed back the opening of Channahon’s Tomahawk Aquatic Center to May 31, instead of the traditional Memorial Day opening.

QUICK NEWS Path to be built from Lemont to Palos Park LEMONT – Gov. Pat Quinn announced a $4.5 million project to build a 7.4-mile pedestrian path through the villages of Lemont and Palos Park and the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, according to a news release.

The path will start at Route 83 and the I&M Canal in Lemont and end at 86th Avenue in Palos Park.

The project will include the necessary structures, signs, guard rails and traffic signal modifications.

“We delayed the opening to make sure our high school life guards got trained,” Brown said.

Season pass sales are down a bit this year, Brown said.

“Summer last year wasn’t so hot, and with spring being so unpredictable, people are a little nervous about committing to a season pass,” he said.

Plainfield’s Ottawa Street Pool traditionally opens the Saturday before Memorial Day, regardless of the temperature.

“Our pool is heated, so even if the temperature is in the 70s, it’s still well-attended,” said Cheryl Crisman, director of recreation.

The early opening also dovetails with Plainfield

schools, which usually go on summer break about a week earlier than most other area districts. But this year many Plainfield students still will be sitting in class the last week of May, doing time for the snow days that kept them out of school during the winter.

Crisman said the pool will be on adjusted hours – no afternoons and longer evenings – on the weekdays after Memorial Day. On May 31, it will return to normal hours.

Other area pools include Heritage Falls Water Park in Romeoville and Chaney Pool in Crest Hill, both of which open on Memorial Day, and Pelican Harbor Aquatic Park in Bolingbrook, which opened May 24.

Memorial Day’s meaning poignant to soldiers’ families

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com For the families of those who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, Memorial Day is an opportunity to do just that – remember.

“The thing that is worse than war is to be forgotten,” said Denise Meehan of Plainfield, mother of Pfc. Andrew Meari, who died Nov. 1, 2010, in action in Afghanistan.

For Meehan, the day will be spent at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, where she will lay a wreath on her son’s grave.

“These memorials are a great comfort,” Meehan said.

“He is my only child. He won’t be forgotten.”

Meari, 21, served as a radio operator in the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division. The division, known as the Screaming Eagles, is an air assault infantry unit renowned for its role in the D-Day invasion during World War II. Meari and his team were returning to base near Kandahar when an insurgent detonated a motorcycle bomb next to them. Meari absorbed most of the blast and was killed. A second soldier died a short time later. The explosion signaled a Taliban attack on the base. Under fire, the rest of the squad refused to leave their fallen comrades until they could be brought back to base.

Meehan later met many of her son’s comrades when they returned home.

“One told me that Andrew was his hero because he believes ... my son protected them by shielding them and continuing to shield them after he was gone,” Meehan said. “Not one of those soldiers received as much as a graze despite taking fire from three sides in no cover. They would not leave my son’s body.”

she was reluctant to talk about her son.

“I was very jealous of his memory and held it very close,” she said.

But after meeting other members of her son’s unit, Meehan said she learned that talking about her son’s service didn’t dissolve his memory, but rather expanded it.

“I realized that I am gaining pieces of memory as I share pieces of memory,” Meehan said.

Meehan now honors her son, as well as living veterans, through her work with Cantigny Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 367, where she’s hosted career and health fairs and helps with the weekly fish fries.

Coping with the loss Yet the passage of time doesn’t make the loss any easier.

Linda Pahnke of Manhattan lost her son, Pvt. Shawn D. Pahnke, 25, to sniper fire while he was on patrol in Baghdad on June 16, 2003. He was the first Will County soldier to die in that war.

“You relive it and you think about it,” Pahnke said. “All you can think is that it’s God’s will.”

A member of Company C,

1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment of the 1st Armored Division, he had volunteered to go out on the fatal street patrol. He left behind a wife and 3-month-old son he never got the chance to meet.

“He saved somebody that day because he was not supposed to go out,” Pahnke said.

“He begged his commander to go out.”

Pahnke, too, will be laying a wreath on her son’s grave at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

“Sean always wanted to go out there when it was being built,” Pahnke said. “Now he is there, right in front where the big flag is.”

Pahnke keeps her son’s memory alive in other ways, too. She maintains a wreath

with her son’s photograph at her home, which she decorates for various holidays.

There are other reminders, as well. The village’s post office was rededicated in 2004 as the Pfc. Shawn Pahnke Manhattan Post Office.

And then there’s the enormous American flag that flies in her son’s honor at Berland’s House of Tools, 1695 New Lenox Road, Joliet, clearly visible from Interstate 80.

Today is a solemn day for the family. And in a few weeks it will be June 16, the anniversary of his death.

“It’s sad and it’s hard,” Pahnke said. “But I will not give up because Shawn didn’t

Memorial Day parade brings community together VIEWS Kris Stadalsky For some Memorial Day means the start of summer and a day off from work or school. But the true meaning of the last Monday in May is much more significant.

It started as Decoration Day a year or so (depending on the source) after the end of the Civil War, a day set aside to decorate the graves of those who died for their country at that time. After World War I, the day was expanded to honor everyone who had died in American wars.

Many cities in both the North and South claim to be

the birthplace of the original Memorial Day back in 1866, including a stone monument in Carbondale.

For American Legion Commander Dave Corbin, Minooka 1188, Memorial Day is a time when the community pulls together to honor all those who have died in American wars, as well as fallen firefighters and police officers.

Today local veterans, police and fire departments, school bands, churches, local organizations, antique tractors and cars (the list goes on) will join together for the annual Memorial Day parade which kicks off at 10 a.m. from Minooka Bible Church and ends at Veteran’s Park on Mondamin Street and Wabe-

na Avenue.

Today will be a day that those who have served will try to help younger generations understand what it means to be free, Corbin said.

“It’s so important to remember where we are now and how it began,” said Corbin. “To be here, to be patriotic, to [talk about] the fight of freedom so everyone can be free.”

There will be two speakers during the ceremony at Veteran’s Park. One is 91-year-old retired Navy Capt.

Frank T. Helmer. The main speaker is Major Benjamin D. Sanders, U.S. Marine Corp.

Bringing these two together will give the audience a perspective from both ends on how things were and how

things are now.

There will be prayers for the fallen military people, firefighters and police officers. A gun salute, taps and then “Amazing Grace” played on the bagpipes by the Doonaree Pipe Band will wind up the ceremony.

It’s always a touching program and it takes a community effort to put it on, Corbin said. From those who walk in the parade, to lining up the speakers, donations of the stage and chairs and organizing everything is a group effort.

While it’s the American Legion that heads up the annual Memorial Day parade and program, other organizations work hand in hand together to make everything

happen.

“People just volunteer themselves for it,” Corbin said. “People don’t mind doing it, the community really comes together.”

One of the best parts of the ceremony for Corbin is seeing the crowd that comes out to watch the parade and pay tribute to the fallen. He loves seeing the marching of the color guard. When the military people on the sides stand at attention and salute as they go by, and everyone claps and shows their respect, “It makes you feel warm inside.”

The 15th annual Memorial Day Ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Road, Elwood.

The ceremony will feature music by the Joliet American Legion Band, as well as other groups and individuals.

Other activities will include the raising of the flag, a rifle salute, Echo Taps, the laying of the Memorial Day wreath and retirement of the colors.

Thomas Muir, deputy under secretary for management at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, will give the address.

Hundreds drawn to cemetery In advance of the annual Memorial Day ceremony, hundreds of volunteers come out to place flags and chairs at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

In years past, one of those volunteers was Lance Cpl. Steven Hancock, a Coal City native who worked his way up from Tiger Scouts to Eagle Scouts before joining the Marines.

Hancock died May 19 after falling from an aircraft while training with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing in North Carolina.

Dan Alexander, a leader with Coal City Boy Scout Troop 466, recalled how as a Cub Scout Hancock and the rest of his pack would help out at the cemetery.

“They started when Lincoln Cemetery first started up,” Alexander said. “When

While shocked by Hancock’s death, Alexander said he wasn’t surprised that the young man joined the Marines.

“I think he wanted to serve his country,” Alexander said. “Becoming an Eagle Scout is not an easy task. To strive to get where he did, it wasn’t easy.”

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com Allison Leehaug isn’t afraid to go the extra mile – and she’ll be traveling more than 700 of them to compete in the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games.

Leehaug, 26, of Frankfort is among 53 athletes chosen to be part of Team Illinois, where she will compete in a pentathlon that includes running, high jumps and shot puts. Leehaug credits her success as an athlete to her competitiveness and ability to overcome challenges daily.

But as much as she looks forward to competing, she also can’t wait to be with her team.

“I have never been there before,” she said about the trip to New Jersey. “You can say I’m happy to be part of a different kind of team.”

The Special Olympics USA Games will be held from June 14 to 21 in Princeton, New Jersey. Almost 3,500 athletes will compete in 16 sport competitions such as aquatics, athletics, bocce, bowling, power lift-

The Special Olympics are held to showcase the athletic talent of people with intellectual disabilities. Leehaug’s mother Julie said she knew

her daughter had autism when Allison was a toddler and it took a while to find the right educational programs for her.

Leehaug attended Echo School in South Holland,

which serves students with disabilities, and graduated from Lincoln-Way East High School in 2009. Her athletic abilities were recognized by her coaches when she participated in sports with the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association.

“You get kids in the right places and right programs and they flourish and blossom,” she said.

Leehaug isn’t the only athlete in Will County who will compete in the Special Olympics. Rikki Kirsch, 20, of Shorewood, also will compete but in the aquatics competition. She’ll be doing backstroke, butterfly and freestyle swimming.

Kirsch has been involved in Special Olympics for five years and attends the Transitions program at Grundy County Special Education, where she helps with REACH Greetings, the greeting card business.

At the encouragement of her teachers, she started as an athlete during her freshmen year of high school with track before she went on to do bowling, swimming and horseback riding. Now she’s excited to head to New Jersey to test her swimming prowess.

“It’s a lot of fun and I like being on the team,” she said.

Equally excited is her mother, Chris, who said despite the national scale of the competition, her daughter remains calm. Kirsch’s hard work as an athlete has been inspiring for her and her family.

The Special Olympics has always played a large role in her family, Chris Kirsch said, and it is an emotional time for her, “I’m going to be looking for boxes of Kleenexes because I’m probably going to be bawling like a baby.”

The City Council last week agreed to amend its weed ordinance to allow staff to deal with unmaintained turf grass in the same way it does with noxious weeds, rubbish and other vegetation vagrants.

If a homeowner refuses to cut their grass, the city will cut it for them, and then place a lien on the property until the expense is paid back.

At the same time, the new rules give residents who maintain their landscaping a lot of leeway, especially for managed natural landscapes, meadow vegetation, ornamental plantings and rain gardens.

As long as they’re maintained and kept free of noxious weeds and uncut turf grass, they’ll be spared from the wrath of the city mowers.

cil: • Approved an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation for engineering and construction of the Washington Street over Spring Creek Improvement Project.

The project will replace the existing span, which has deteriorated to the point of needing complete replacement, with a single span bridge. The city has received a $1.4 million federal grant for the project. Construction, which is expected to begin in July, will last about six months.

• Approved a 15-year agreement for use of Silver Cross Field by the Miracle League.

The organization provides opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities to play baseball.

• Approved annexing property at 1913 S. Briggs St. and rezoning it for light industrial use. The property will be developed as a warehouse/distribution facility by Berkot’s Super Foods. Berkot’s plans to remodel the building and add a 20,000-square-foot addition in the rear.

Several area real estate agents and loan officers are giving back to veterans and people in other service-oriented occupations – by giving up some of their own commission.

They are participating in the national Homes for Heroes program, which calls for 25 percent of a real estate agent’s commission on a sale to go back to the homeowner for being in the fire or police force, an active military member or veteran, doctor, nurse, clergyman or teacher.

Affiliated lenders offer discount fees for these “heroes” who are buying or refinancing. Additional discounts are available with partners of the program.

“It really is personal,” said Eddie Ruettiger, a Crest Hill resident and Realtor with Realty Executives Success in Plainfield. “It’s personal because it’s a substantial part of my income I’m choosing to

a retired teacher. “They deserve a big thank you.”

Ruettiger remembered the 1990 Plainfield tornado that killed 29 people, and the help teachers provided in the aftermath.

“Teachers take the big brunt when these impacts happen because they have to deal with the kids for the next three to four months,” he said.

But for Ruettiger, his father was the big reason why he joined the program three months ago.

“My father was a state trooper,” he said. “When I was in sixth grade he was shot in the line of duty. I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to see your dad as a hero then to find how vulnerable he is.”

“They work hard every single day and they don’t get nearly enough compensation,” Ruettiger said. “I’ve seen things fall apart for people over a couple of hundred dollars. Just that much would get them over the threshold to own their own home.”

Dr. Timmothy D. Bailey lived his dream

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – At 5 years old, Timmothy Bailey of Joliet had just one request for Santa: a doctor’s kit. And “Santa” brought it, said Coleen Bailey of Joliet, Timmothy’s mother.

Kit in hand, Timmothy always found ways to turn family and Dr. Timmothy friends into D. Bailey “patients.” His Joliet lifelong goal was to earn his medical degree and practice in Joliet, which he did, until double pneumonia claimed his life June 1, 2013, at the age of 37.

“Timmothy had gone on a medical mission to Africa in 2009,” Coleen said. “They [doctors] think he had inhaled some kind of bacteria into his lungs. They never could

identify it.”

A life of service built upon a strong Christian faith and immersing himself in opportunities defined Timmothy.

Coleen said her son accepted Christ at a young age under the leadership of the late Dr. Isaac Singleton, former pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Joliet.

Bonnie Winfrey of Joliet, former member of Mount Zion and lifelong family friend, felt that unwavering faith gave Timmothy the strength to meet his goal, despite any obstacles he encountered along the way.

“Timmothy knew that if you dream the impossible,” Winfrey said, “you pursue that and let God direct you to the way of possible.”

Growing up, Timmothy participated in many of the church’s choirs and ministries: junior usher board, youth choir, Zion Melody Choir, Voices of Zion, Vessels of Praise, Zion’s Men’s Chorus,

Health and Wellness Ministry and the Light House Ministry, Coleen said.

During his school years, Timmothy was “a great student.” At Joliet Central High School, Coleen said Timmothy belonged to the drama club, the choir and R.O.T.C. He was also a news anchor and played violin in the school’s orchestra.

As an adult, Timmothy eagerly accepted any request to speak at those schools, Coleen said. Timmothy wanted to encourage current students to set high standards and lofty goals for themselves so they, too, could make their dreams come true.

“He was always proud to say that he attended Joliet schools,” Coleen said.

When Timmothy was ready to begin his medical studies, Mount Zion Baptist Church presented him with two scholarships: the Arneda Greenlaw Scholarship and the Addie

Withers Medical Scholarship.

This last scholarship had significant meaning for Coleen. When she was a little girl, her own medical care was overseen by a man she only recalls as “Dr. Wilson,” whom Coleen said was the first black doctor in Joliet. Addie Withers was his nurse and secretary, Coleen added.

And when Timmothy, attained his goal, he did not forget the people who helped him attain it. He cared for his father Albert D. Bailey Sr. during all the years he battled congestive heart failure, which inspired Timmothy to study geriatric medicine.

Timmothy helped his sister, Katie Bailey of Joliet, a single parent, raise her three children, Katie said. He encouraged his brother, Albert Bailey Jr. of Wisconsin, to successfully pursue his dream of becoming a college professor, Albert said.

Shortly after Timmothy

graduated from medical school in 2009, Coleen said Timmothy participated in his first and only medical mission trip.

Timmothy then worked for the Will County Health Department and Dr. Yatin Shah in Joliet before opening his own practice on Hammes Avenue in 2011, Coleen said.

At the time of his death, Timmothy was an associate of Dr. Rajiv Kandala in Chicago, where he continued to practice both family and geriatric medicine and oversee two nursing homes, Coleen said.

On Jan. 13, after his last promotion, Coleen said Timmothy wrote this on his Facebook page: “This was one of my goals and I am only 37.

Merline Upchurch (nee Hocutt), age 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Salem Village from terminal dementia as a result of Alzheimer's disease.

Merline was born and raised on the family farm in Schlater, MS. As a young adult, she relocated to Illinois where she had resided the remainder of her life. She retired from Joliet Medical Group after 20 years of service as a collections manager. She enjoyed puzzles, bingo, roses in the garden, cooking, and cherished time with her family most of all.

Merline married John L. Beckham, Sr., and he preceded her in death in 1957. She later married James H. Upchurch, and he preceded her in death in 1977. SPRINGFIELD – Illinois legislators return to the Capitol Monday for their final week of the spring session, with much of the heavy lifting still to do.

Here’s a look some of the issues still yet to be addressed, and what the outlook is as the General Assembly heads toward its Saturday adjournment.

At its most basic, this year’s budget debate comes down to one question: Is it better to extend the income tax hike – potentially angering voters who were told it would be temporary – or approve a smaller budget that cuts billions of dollars for schools, social services and other areas?

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration has affirmed its support for the state Department of Natural Resources’ efforts to craft rules governing hydraulic fracturing, saying the process ensures that the public, advocates and experts all have the chance to weigh in.

Saturday’s statement from the governor’s office came a day after Democratic state Rep. John Bradley proposed legislation to jump-start fracking through a measure that would skip that rule-making process.

The state Legislature authorized the oil and gas drilling method last May, and the DNR has spent months holding hearings and sifting through tens of thousands of comments as part of the rule-making process that Illinois law requires to be completed by November.

Madigan pushes independent Lincoln museum agency

SPRINGFIELD – House Speaker Michael Madigan’s proposal to form an independent state agency to run the popular Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is scheduled for a committee hearing Monday in

Springfield.

The powerful Chicago Democrat made the proposal Friday to transfer authority over the Springfield-based Lincoln attractions away from the Historic Preservation Agency, creating a new agency with its own executive director and board.

The new entity would join a list of agencies that function independently of the governor’s office, a provision spelled out in Madigan’s legislation, although board members would be appointed by the governor.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown told the Chicago SunTimes the speaker thinks the

Lincoln attraction “deserves to be a stand-alone entity.”

Authorities: Man dies after coffee machine topples

CHICAGO – Authorities say a Chicago man was killed when a commercial coffee machine he was setting up toppled onto him near a park.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said 48-yearold James Karr died at a hospital shortly after the accident about 4:30 p.m. Saturday near Grant Park.

Fireworks suspected in Chicago-area school blaze

DES PLAINES – Authorities said a suburban Chicago elementary school was damaged in a fire blamed on children playing with fireworks.

Des Plaines Fire Chief Alan Wax tells the Arlington Heights Daily Herald that firefighters responding to the blaze about 4:30 p.m.

Saturday at Algonquin Middle School managed to keep the blaze from making its way into the building.

Police said they suspect three children – two 12-year-olds and a 13-year-old – were playing with fireworks when the blaze began near plastic crates outside an entrance to the building’s mechanical and receiving room.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS 3 dead, 1 wounded in shooting at S.C. motel MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Three people were killed and a fourth person was wounded in a shooting at an oceanfront motel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The shootings took place about 11 p.m. Saturday in front of crowds of tourists at the Bermuda Sands Motel along the beach’s new boardwalk, Myrtle Beach Police Capt. David Knipes said.

Officers draped towels over the balcony of a breezeway just outside the doors to the rooms of the motel to shield two of the bodies from people on nearby Ocean Boulevard.

“We’ve got detectives working on it around the clock,” Knipes said Sunday. “We don’t have any suspects in custody.”

Knipes would not say whether detectives have determined a motive for the shooting, but said it didn’t appear to be a random shooting.

Belgium hunts for suspect in Jewish attack BRUSSELS – Belgium launched a nationwide hunt Sunday for a lone gunman who walked into the Jewish Museum, unpacked a Kalashnikov rifle, killed at least three people with a short burst of fire, packed up and briskly walked away.

Saturday’s attack led Belgian officials to immediately raise anti-terror measures and increase the protection for Jewish sites for what was widely seen as an anti-Semitic attack. It happened on the eve of Belgium’s nationwide

election and as voters across the continent picked a new European Parliament.

Video of the attack showed an athletic man with cap walking determinedly into the small Jewish Museum in the swank Sablon area, clearly bent on quickly carrying out a pre-planned attack.

The whole assault took a minute at most.

No one has claimed responsibility for the killings. Leaders from Belgium and France, Pope Francis, Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and others condemned the cold-blooded attack.

Sweets makers work to keep names off e-cigs RICHMOND, Va. – Owners of brands geared toward children of all ages are battling to keep notable names like Thin Mint, Tootsie Roll and Cinnamon Toast Crunch off the flavored nicotine used in electronic cigarettes.

General Mills Inc., the Girl Scouts of the USA and Tootsie Roll Industries Inc. are among several companies that have sent cease-and-desist letters to makers of the liquid nicotine demanding they stop using the brands and may take further legal action if necessary. They want to make sure their brands aren’t being used to sell an addictive drug or make it appealing to children.

The actions highlight the debate about the array of flavors available for the battery-powered devices.

The Associated Press BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – President Barack Obama slipped into Afghanistan for a surprise visit Sunday and made clear that the U.S. will likely maintain a limited role here even after its combat mission ends this year and America’s longest war comes to a close.

“America’s commitment to the people of Afghanistan will endure,” he pledged.

Speaking to troops gathered in an airplane hangar on this sprawling military base, Obama said the war had reached a pivotal point, with Afghan forces assuming primary responsibility for their country’s security.

But while many of the 32,800 U.S. forces now in Afghanistan will leave in the coming months, Obama said a continued military presence could help protect gains made during nearly 13 years of fighting.

“After all the sacrific-

es we’ve made, we want to preserve the gains that you have helped to win and we’re going to make sure that Afghanistan can never again, ever, be used again to launch an attack against our country,” Obama declared.

At least 2,181 members of the U.S. military have died during the nearly 13-year Afghan war and thousands more have been wounded.

Obama told the troops, “For many of you, this will be your last tour in Afghanistan,” a comment was met with an eruption of applause.

“America’s war in Afghanistan will come to a responsible end.”

The president appeared optimistic that the Afghan government soon would sign a bilateral security agreement allowing the U.S. to keep some forces in the country to train Afghans and launch counterterrorism operations. He has been considering keeping up to 10,000 troops in Afghanistan and said he would announce his

decision shortly.

That announcement could come as early as Wednesday, when Obama delivers the commencement address at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

Obama arrived at Bagram Air Field, the main U.S. base in Afghanistan, under the cover of darkness for his first trip to the war zone since 2012. He spent about four hours at the base and did not go to Kabul, the capital, to meet with Hamid Karzai, the mercurial president who has had a tumultuous relationship with the White House.

Instead, officials said Obama wanted to keep the focus during his Memorial Day weekend visit on the troops serving in the war’s closing months. Karzai’s office said it had declined a U.S. Embassy invitation for him to go to Bagram to see Obama. The White House said Obama was not meeting with the outgoing Afghan president in order to avoid getting involved in Afghan politics.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Europe’s moves to rein in Google – including a court ruling this month ordering the search giant to give people a say in what pops up when someone searches their name – may be seen in Brussels as striking a blow for the little guy.

But across the Atlantic, the idea that users should be able to edit Google search results in the name of privacy is being slammed as weird and difficult to enforce at best and a crackdown on free speech at worst.

“Americans will find their searches bowdlerized by prissy European sensibilities,” said Stewart Baker, former assistant secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. “We’ll be the big losers. The big winners will be French ministers who want the right to have their last mistress forgotten.”

Mountain View, California -based Google said it’s still figuring out how to comply with the European Court of Justice’s May 13 ruling, which says the company must respond to complaints about private information that turns up in searches. Google must then decide whether the public’s right to be able to find the information outweighs an individual’s right to control it – with preference given to the individual.

The judgment applies to all search engines operating within the European Union. But in practice that means Google, given that 90 percent of all online searches there use Google’s search engine.

“The ruling has significant implications for how we handle takedown requests,” Google spokesman Al Verney said. “This is logistically complicated, not least because of the many languages involved and the need for careful review.

As soon as we have thought through exactly how this will work, which may take several weeks, we will let our users know.”

There will be serious technological challenges, said U.S. privacy attorney David Keating in Atlanta.

“It seems aspirational, not a reality, to comply with such a standard,” he said. “The reengineering necessary to implement the right to be forgotten is significant.”

Google may partially automate the process, as it does with copyright-infringement complaints, but ultimately a human will have to decide when results should be sanitized.

Johannes Caspar, who as Hamburg’s Commissioner for Data Protection acts as Germany’s lead regulator of Google on privacy issues, confirmed the company is already working on an “online tool” to help people file complaints.

Because the court’s ruling applies only within Europe, it will mean some fragmentation of search results. That is, Europeans and Americans will see slightly different versions of the Internet. A worst-case scenario would be if Google decides it must err on the side of caution and removes links liberally in order to avoid lawsuits, critics of the ruling said.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, who has been an outspoken critic of the ruling, summarized it for The Associated Press as a “technologically incompetent violation of human rights.” He said it amounts to censorship, and he predicted it will ultimately be scrapped.

“The danger is that search engines now are faced with an uncertain legal future which may require them to censor all kinds of things when someone thinks it is ‘irrelevant’,” Wales said.

In the wake of the decision, some Europeans are already asking to clean up their online history, though there may not yet have been a “flood” of hundreds of requests, including some from pedophiles and politicians, as was reported in the British press shortly after the ruling was handed down.

In Britain, David Murphy of the Information Commissioner’s Office said “while we’ve had some people get in touch around this issue, we’re simply telling them to speak to Google.”

Officials in the Netherlands said they haven’t had any new requests since the ruling.

Pope offers support for Palestinian statehood

By JOSEF FEDERMAN and MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH The Associated Press JERUSALEM – Pope Francis delivered a powerful boost of support to the Palestinians during a Holy Land pilgrimage Sunday, repeatedly backing their statehood aspirations, praying solemnly at Israel’s controversial separation barrier and calling the stalemate in peace efforts “unacceptable.”

In an unscripted move, Francis arranged a meeting between the Israeli and Palestinian presidents at the Vatican next month. The meeting, while largely symbolic, shows how the pope has sought to transform his immensely popular appeal into a moral force for peace.

On the second day of a three-day swing through the region, the pope arrived in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christianity, before heading to Israel for the final leg of his visit.

While Francis mingled warmly with his Israeli hosts, his trip to Bethlehem included the day’s most powerful images as he expressed sympathy and solidarity with the Palestinians.

“I am with you,” he told a group of Palestinian children at a stop in Bethlehem’s Deheishe refugee camp. He also held a private lunch with five Palestinian families who say

Even the pope’s arrival in Bethlehem – by helicopter straight from Jordan – carried important symbolic significance. Past papal visits to the West Bank have come through Israel, which captured the territory in the 1967 Mideast war.

Palestinian officials hailed Francis’ decision to refer to the “state of Palestine.” In its official program, the Vatican referred to President Mahmoud Abbas as the president of the “state of Palestine,” and his Bethlehem office as the “presidential palace.” He pointedly called Abbas a “man of peace.”

Jubilant Palestinians cheered Francis as he arrived in Bethlehem’s Manger Square, shouting “Viva al-Baba!” or “Long live the pope!”

“Coming to Bethlehem and flying to Bethlehem from Jordan shows solidarity with the Palestinian people, which is wonderful. We need that,” said Samar Sakkakin, a 52-year-old Palestinian-American from Canton, Michigan.

In November 2012, the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly recognized a “state of Palestine” in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem – lands Israel captured in the 1967 war – as a non-member observer. The recognition still has little meaning on the ground, with Israel remaining in full control of east Jerusalem, which it annexed in 1967, and the West Bank.

However, it has enabled the Palestinians to start seeking membership in U.N. agencies and accede to international conventions in a further upgrade of their status. Israel objects to the Palestinian campaign, saying it is an attempt to bypass negotiations.

Francis’ arrival came weeks after the latest round of U.S.-backed peace talks collapsed. During nine months of negotiations, little – if any – progress was made, and there are no signs of talks resuming anytime soon.

Standing alongside Abbas at a welcome ceremony, Francis declared: “The time has come to put an end to this situation, which has become increasingly unacceptable.”

WARSAW, Poland – Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski, the survivor of a Siberian labor camp, was an unlikely servant to the Soviet Union and its communist ideology.

Poland’s last communist leader, the general in tinted glasses who was best known for his 1981 martial law crackdown on Gen. the Solidarity Wojciech union, died Jaruzelski, Sunday at age 90 after a long was Poland’s struggle with last commucancer and a nist leader recent stroke.

Born into a patriotic and Catholic Polish milieu, Jaruzelski and his family were deported to Siberia by the Red Army during World War II. That harsh land took his father’s life and inflicted snow blindness on Jaruzelski, forcing him to wear dark glasses.

Despite his suffering at Soviet hands, Jaruzelski faithfully imposed Moscow’s will on his subjugated nation until communism crumbled across the region in 1989.

Poland is still deeply divided over whether to view Jaruzelski as a traitor who did Moscow’s dirty work or as a patriot who made an agonizing decision to spare the country the bloodshed of a Soviet invasion.

Jaruzelski stirs up these emotions for his defining act: His 1981 imposition of martial law, a harsh crackdown aimed at crushing the

pro-democracy Solidarity movement founded months earlier by Lech Walesa.

Commenting on his death, Walesa called him a “great man of the generation of betrayal.”

“Those times were complicated, I’m leaving the assessment to God,” Walesa said.

Another of Jaruzelski’s chief adversaries, communist-era dissident Adam Michnik, believes now that general had no choice.

“If you have to choose between martial law and a Russian military intervention, you should not hesitate,” Michnik told The Associated Press on Sunday. “It’s clear that it was the lesser evil.”

Jaruzelski preferred to be remembered for the negotiations he backed eight years later that helped dismantle the regime and set Poland on track to become the thriving democracy it is today.

The suppression of Solidarity resulted in the imprisonment of thousands of dissidents, the deaths of dozens and economic stagnation.

“A tragic believer in Communism who made a pact with the devil in good faith” is how the Croatian writer Slavenka Drakulic described Jaruzelski.

The image of Jaruzelski in his drab olive military uniform announcing martial law on state television remains iconic to Poles.

Straight-backed and betraying no emotion, he read from documents as he announced martial law and the outlawing of Solidarity, the first independent labor union in the communist bloc.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR HONORING THOSE WHO SERVE OUR COUNTRY To the Editor: I read a story recently about the president awarding the Medal of Honor to Kyle White. Some years ago, I wrote about Romeoville’s Kyle Wright and the courage he displayed during battle.

He gave his life for his country, and reigns with all of the other veterans who have served our country (combat or not).

In the article, I read Kyle White’s sign or call was “Charlie -1-6 Romeo.” My husband Charlie, now deceased, had the same name and sign.

I am proud to write my Charlie was on Utah Beach (second group) during the June 6, 1944, invasion of Normandy. Very seldom did Charlie talk about the invasion, but when he did it was horrific.

There were many heroes that day. Some never came home.

Within our Golden Agers Club, I have been privileged to know veterans who went on the Honor Flight. My husband, and many other veterans will never have that honor. Some of the Ro-

meoville veterans who have been on this Honor Flight – Betty, Chester, Ray and Nick – were shown love, respect and gratefulness, and were honored for their valor. All veterans deserve this distinction.

As Memorial Day approaches, I and many shed tears for what my then19-year-old husband, and others went through for our country.

They never asked why.

He told me – his country needed him.

To me “thank you” is not enough. I must always respect, honor, and appreciate all veterans. Freedom is not free. The Honor Flight is one example that is a success.

Our future and present generation will emulate the courage shown by their forebears.

We Americans are proud.

We always leave a legacy for the world to see our strength, wisdom, dedication and heroism. This has been illustrated in our past, and will continue in the future.

God bless America.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act, signed into law in 1968 and effective as of Jan. 1, 1971, monkeyed with two somber holidays with military connections: Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day had been observed on May 30 across the nation ever since that date was established in 1868

by Gen. John A. Logan of Illinois, the commander of the largest organization of Civil War veterans, the Grand Army of the Republic. It was then called Decoration Day, when the graves of Civil War dead were to be decorated with the flowers of spring.

As the years passed, it came to include the dead of all America’s wars.

Veterans Day had been observed on Nov. 11 since 1919, the 1-year anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the first World War. It was then

called Armistice Day. As the years passed, it became a day to honor the service of all military veterans.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act changed the federal observance of Memorial Day to the last Monday in May, and the observance of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October.

It wasn’t long until public objections caused a change.

In a federal law that took effect in 1978, Veterans Day was returned to Nov. 11.

Memorial Day, however, has remained a Monday holiday, to the happiness of some and the consternation of others.

Here’s hoping area residents have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend, while honoring the reason for the holiday.

Joliet rebounds from scoreless outing Saturday for eight runs against Normal

JOLIET – Marquis Riley led three Slammers players with two hits apiece as Joliet beat Normal, 8-4, on Sunday to take two of three games in the weekend Frontier League series at Silver Cross Field.

“I was able to work on some things in spring training and I’ve put in a lot of work in the cage,” Riley said of hitting .405 over the first nine games, usually from the No. 2 spot in the batting order.

“He’s a threat at the plate.

He works counts,” manager Jeff Isom said. “If he gets a pitch to hit, he’s going to put a good swing on it. He’s going to be an important part of our lineup all season long.

“I know what he’s capable of doing because I saw him last year when I was managing against him. He’s a tough out.

He’s off to a great start.”

Riley helped the Slammers (5-4) take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. His double to left moved leadoff hitter Max Casper to third with no outs.

Grant DeBruin followed with a double to right-center, scoring Riley. C.J. Epperson’s single to right scored DeBruin.

After Normal’s Sam Judah homered to right to make it 3-2, the Slammers scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

DeBruin, Epperson and Adam Lewis loaded the bases with back-to-back-to-back singles. Bill Miller’s infield hit and a throwing error by Normal shortstop Brian Bistagne scored DeBruin and Epperson.

Casper drove in Lewis and Miller with a single to center to stretch Joliet’s lead to 7-2 over the CornBelters (3-6).

The Slammers’ starting pitcher, lefty Jake Hermsen, gave up back-to-back singles to start the fifth inning before striking out the next two batters.

“It was good to start a game,” Hermsen said. “It’s been a year since I started a game. It was definitely good to get out there.

“I had quite a few family members here, so it was fun to throw in front of them. I didn’t have my best stuff, but I battled and got some tough outs when we needed them.”

by Southern Illinois earlier in the week. He pitched for Joliet in 2013.

“Hermsen came in and did a nice job,” Isom said. “We wanted him to get the win, but he got into a sticky situation going 42⁄3 innings before we had to go to the bullpen. The bullpen did a nice job.”

The Slammers’ Adam Giacalone finished the scoring with a solo home run, his first, in the bottom of the fifth inning.

DeBruin and Epperson finished with two hits, raising their averages to .344 and .333, respectively.

Joliet’s offensive output was a far cry from Saturday’s performance, when the Slammers were shut out 5-0.

Four individuals claim a pair of sectional titles

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Winning one title at a competitive meet like the Class 3A Joliet West Sectional is a difficult enough challenge for most track and field athletes.

So needless to say, it’s a big deal whenever someone wins a pair of championship, which is just what several area athletes were able to do last Thursday.

Those performances by Minooka’s Peter Andreano, Plainfield Central’s Kahmari Montgomery, Plainfield East’s Shederick Majors and Plainfield South’s Dan Lathrop figure to provide some great momentum as the four prepare for the state finals in Charleston.

Andreano captured titles in both the long jump and high jump.

“I just got really excited about this meet,” Andreano said. “I’ve been battling shin splints for most of the outdoor season, but in my excitement,

I was able to get over that and I went out and did what I wanted to do. Now I’m hoping to bring home two medals from state. All of the coaches and all of our kids are excited about how well we’ve been doing.”

After prevailing in an exciting 3,200-meter, Lathrop rallied late to win the 1,600.

“It was a really special day

and to be able to win the two titles is really cool, especially with all of the competition there,” Lathrop said. “We had a great race in the 3,200 and we were able to get a lot of guys down to state. This gives me a little more confidence in everything and I’m just really excited for next week as I run my last races for Plainfield

South.”

Montgomery followed up on a win in the 400 by also capturing the 200.

“Coach told me the other day that I was number one in the state in both the 200 and the 400 and I couldn’t believe it,” Montgomery said. “I want to thank God, my family and my coaches for how I’m doing. I have the best coaching staff that you could ask for and without them, I wouldn’t be here. It’s a blessing.”

Majors won the 100 and then ran on East’s winning 4x200 relay.

“It feels good to win the sectional,” Majors said. “In the 100, I came out fast and just kept my composure and my drive up. Last year I wasn’t running that good so during the offseason, I worked hard on my form and my conditioning. My teammates push me every day to get better.”

In addition, 10 local relays qualified for state. Here were their sectional lineups.

Minooka’s 4x200 relay in-

cluded Devin Ingram, Mitch Miller, Victor Turpin and Matt Dlugopolski while its 4x400 relay featured Kyle Shelton, Kyle Brown, Matt Szymel and Chris Wilson. Ingram, Miller and Wilson joined Chris Hopkins on the winning 4x100 relay.

Plainfield East’s 4x100 relay had Christian Glass, Prince Smith, Shederick Majors and John Mensah. Jarvis Carter replaced Mensah in the winning 4x200 relay.

Plainfield North’s 4x100 relay included DeVaughn Hrobowski, Thomas Harris, Alex Ruscitti and Annile Williams while Quintin Hoosman stepped in for Williams in the 4x200 relay.

Plainfield South’s 4x800 relay was John Partee, Bailey Zink, Kenny Peters and Misael Tobias while its 4x200 relay featured Brad Ehringer, Austin Deal, Jaylon Gillispie and Tommie Van. Joliet West’s 4x200 relay consistedofRonaldBanner,Cedric Green, Elton Hodges and Jonathan Fowler.

Area girls set several program records at state meet

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – All kinds of history was made by local athletes at Saturday’s finals of the IHSA girls track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University.

Lincoln-Way East repeated as Class 3A champs with Meghan Marias winning the 100 and also running on two first-place relays. Meanwhile Minooka’s Janile Rogers became the Indians’ second state champ after taking top honors in the long jump.

Morris’ Haleigh Knapp captured her third straight Class 2A championship in the high jump while Reed-Custer’s Morgan Zacharias followed up on consecutive runner-up efforts to claim the title in the Class 1A pole vault.

Meanwhile, four area individuals and one relay settled for second place finishes in

their events. In addition, several programs set a new standard with their efforts.

Beside running on the record-setting 4x100 relay, Lincoln-Way East’s Alexis Hyshaw finished just behind Marias in the 100. It’s just the fifth time in state history that teammates have gone one-two in the event and Hyshaw, was involved twice, finishing second to Aaliyah Brown in 2013.

“All of the hard work from the beginning of the season paid off since we just got ourselves another state title,” Hyshaw said. “We just want to give thanks to God for everything that he’s done and I thank my coaches and teammates. We got a nice jump with the 4x100 and had confidence to break the record.

And it was good to get all of those points in the 100.”

The Griffins also received a second-place effort from pole vaulter Julia Junkroski, who

improved one spot from a year ago and also placed eighth in the high jump to earn her third medal in that event.

“This is really exciting since we have a lot of talent this year,” Junkroski said.

Lemont posted its best state finish ever with Vika Marmaite taking second in the triple jump and Jacque Desmond claiming sixth in the pole vault. Both finishes were better than the program’s previous-best, Elissa Bitterman’s seventh in the Class 2A high jump in 2010.

“I’m not feeling really good since I’m not first,” said Marmaite, who came from Lithuania earlier this year. “Then again, taking second is still good. I’m excited about how I did.”

Minooka also recorded its best finish ever, tying for fifth place. Beside winning the long jump title, Rogers was fourth in the 100 and ran on fifth- and sixth-place relays.

“Janile is a tremendous athlete and competitor and she set the standard for us,” Indians coach Kevin Gum-

merson said. “I’m so proud of her and the entire team. We brought a lot of kids down and they all competed at a high level. To get four all-state performances and a fifth place finish was tremendous. It was just a great day for Minooka track and field.”

Seneca’s Willow Stuedemann finished second in the 100, was fourth in the 400 and took sixth in the 200 in Class 1A to join Alyssa Applebee (2011) as a three-time medalists at a meet.

“I’m proud of how I did,” Stuedemann said. “ Last year I didn’t make it to the finals so my goal was to get on the podium. They say there was a Stuedemann curse since my brother was always injured and my sister [Aspen] broke her arm in sectional and had one of the best 100 hurdles times last year and false-started. So I can say that I broke the curse.”

“I think we just missed it [Sunday],” Wilson said of the setup. “The car was a handful at times.”

Mann was hobbled by a technical problem a third of the way into the race and fell five laps in arrears. She ended up seven laps behind the leaders.

Those leaders, Hunter-Reay and Castroneves, traded the lead four times in the final five laps – twice officially – their yellow-liveried Dallaras dancing back and forth across the 2.5-mile distance of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at 220 mph. That kept the estimated 235,000 fans nervously on their

feet until Hunter-Reay took the twin checkered flags first – by .06 of a second, the second-closest finish in 500 history.

The final six laps were at speed following a red flag with eight laps remaining to repair the steel barrier that cushions a crash in the corners, the damage caused by Bell.

While he was uninjured, the track wall was less fortunate. Without the red flag – only the third time the race has been stopped aside from rain in 98 runnings – the 500 likely would have finished under a yellow caution flag for the fifth straight year.

Instead, it finished with yel-

low cars chasing each other.

Hunter-Reay led on the Lap 195 restart. Castroneves jumped into the lead going into Turn 1 on the following lap, with Marco Andretti, in third and seemingly in a catbird seat, unable to also pass Hunter-Reay, who happened to be his teammate.

Andretti would stay third as Hunter-Reay and Castroneves duked it out. Hunter-Reay grabbed the lead back in Turn 3 in bold fashion on the 197th lap, nearly running into the grass on the inside of the track in doing so.

“I faked to the top, came back down and cut a little grass for IMS,” Hunter-Reay said. “We never really ran those lines at all the whole month. That was all new. Everything everybody was doing at the end was all new.”

Castroneves, seeking his fourth 500 victory and the 16th for team owner Roger Penske, stayed on his tail, and edged in front by passing on the outside, emulating a winning move by mentor Rick Mears, on the 199th lap – but Hunter-Reay regained the advantage before the lap was over, and kept it.

The biggest of the three other accidents besides Bell’s – and none until the 150th

lap – involved pole-sitter Ed Carpenter, James Hinchcliffe and Bell. All three went for the same spot in Turn 1, with predictable results. Carpenter and Hinchcliffe hit the wall.

Bell went on. Carpenter, seeing himself blameless, blamed Hinchcliffe.

“I told him, if he didn’t have a concussion last week, I would have punched him in the face,” Carpenter said.

There was a time when Hunter-Reay, unable to get a ride in open-wheel racing for two years when Champ Car floundered, pondered running in NASCAR. He finally landed with Michael Andretti, captured the IndyCar season title in 2012, and now will be forever introduced as an Indianapolis 500 winner, thanks to a bold move that paid off.

“In my head, I was going for it,” Hunter-Reay said. “Second doesn’t really count in the Indy 500. I was going to make it or end up in the wall.”

Better to be on the Borg-Warner Trophy than in the wall.

Kurt Busch finished sixth (the last of the four Andretti drivers in the top six) before flying to Charlotte to compete in Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600.

SPEEDWAY, Ind. – At the front, Ryan Hunter-Reay was becoming the first American to win the Indianapolis 500 in eight years by virtue of a bold pass of Helio Castroneves for the lead with just over three laps to go in one of the more frantic editions of racing’s grandest spectacle.

Close to the front is where Justin Wilson ran much of the day, climbing into the top 10 for long stints in the second half of the race.

But in the end, Wilson wasn’t in the front pack, and wasn’t even the top-finishing driver for Plainfield-based Dale Coyne Racing.

That honor belonged to Carlos Huertas, the 22-year-old Colombian. He ended up in 17th place, squarely in the middle of the 33-car field, with Wilson 22nd and Pippa Mann 24th.

“I would have loved to have a better result but that is what I had,” Huertas said. “I ran the maximum I could. The end got a bit crazy but I managed to stay out of the crashes.”

Wilson wasn’t able to, but was the most fortunate of the three. He was right behind Townsend Bell when Bell hit the Turn 2 wall with eight laps to go. Parts from Bell’s car hit Wilson’s car as he drove through the airborne detritus.

“I had to drive the other way, and it’s a complete debris field,” Wilson said. “And you can’t change directions, so I hit the engine cover and it broke the front wing and the mirror [of his car]. Right before the cockpit opening, so I’m pretty lucky.”

While he called it “struggling,” Wilson had been running eighth and seeking an opening up front before Bell crashed. Quick work by his pit crew brought him a new wing and mirror, but his quest was over.

STAFF REPORTS FRANKFORT – Lincoln-Way East sported the singles champion in Rohan Piska and the top two doubles teams in breezing to the championship of the boys tennis sectional it hosted Saturday.

The Griffins scored 26 points to 13 for runner-up Bradley. Lincoln-Way Central was third in the eight-team field with eight points.

The top four finishers in singles and top four in doubles at each sectional statewide advance to this weekend’s state meet at Arlington Heights and other nearby suburbs. Central’s Ryan Champlin was second in singles and East’s Nikhil Piska took fourth.

Seneca champions were Trevin Seul in pole vault (126) and Tommy Lovett in the 110 hurdles (14.77). Other Irish state qualifiers are 4x100 relay (44.38), 4x200 (1:31.84) and Ross McCormack in 3200 (10:12.36) and 800 (2:02.28).

Reed-Custer’s BJ Bailey won the 100 (11.19) and qualified in the 200 (22.95). The Comets’ 4x800 relay (8:23.56) also is going to state.

although he gave up a two-run homer to Starlin Castro in the ninth inning.

The Padres went ahead, 2-1, in the sixth inning on Carlos Quentin’s pinch-hit single off reliever James Russell, after Chase Headley’s sacrifice fly tied the game. Two walks

For Quentin, it was his third pinch-hit RBI in two games after a two-run, homer in Saturday’s loss.

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – It started with a pregame video and ran all the way through the final out and a high-five line for the New York Yankees.

This was the Derek Jeter show, and it was quite a performance for the shortstop’s farewell tour.

Jeter had four hits and

Masahiro Tanaka rebounded nicely from his first major league loss, leading the Yankees to a 7-1 victory over the White Sox on Sunday.

“I just want to try to help us win. That’s it,” Jeter said.

“Our job is, if there’s a guy on second base and I’ve got to hit a ground ball to second to move him over, I’ll do it.

I don’t think about personal statistics. I think about trying

to help us win.”

He certainly played a key role as the Yankees closed out an extended stay in Chicago with a pair of wins against the Sox. Brett Gardner had a big two-run single in New York’s four-run second inning, and Brian Roberts added a solo homer in the eighth in his return to the lineup after missing a game with a sore right knee.

That’s why 16-year rescue volunteer Jill Paukstis of Lockport eased away from some of her other volunteer ventures to become the rescue coordinator for the newly formed Dog District in Darien.

“Boo had been dumped at Animal Control [in Chicago] for the second time,” Paukstis said. “He was just sitting in his cage, deteriorating. He was not let out very often. It was wearing on him.”

To the rescue came the Dog District, a combination doggie day care, boarding, training facility, nonprofit dog rescue and home of Mike Toland and Tasha Truong, dog enthusiasts, business partners and trainers, who founded the Dog District last fall.

Toland and Truong worked with Boo until he lost much of his fearfulness. Then Paukstis used her vast network to help find Boo a new owner, a “wonderful woman from Rockford.”

A jubilant Paukstis even went the extra miles for this dog and his new owner.

“I drove him down to Rockford for her,” Paukstis said.

During this time, Paukstis became acquainted with Dog District philosophy and methods and Toland became impressed with Paukstis’ dedication to re-homing tough rescue cases, such as Boo. “We trusted her to come on board and help,” Toland said.

Paukstis, a Jill of all trades when it comes to animal rescue, got her start when she was a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago: she answered a Craig’s List ad about a shelter needing a dog walker.

“The shelter was across the street from Cabrini Green,” Paukstis said. “It was all pit bulls, bait dogs they were rescuing from fighting rings. So I went there.”

Since then, Paukstis, a product manager for Advanced Diamond Technologies in Romeoville and adjunct business communications teacher at Joliet Junior College, has lent her helping hands to various rescues and shelters, thus building up a wide network of like-minded volunteers, upon whom Paukstis can depend for support.

It was during one such request that Paukstis became acquainted with the Dog District.

When she pleaded on Facebook for assistance, the Dog

District replied, “We’ll help,” and Paukstis, owner of two pit bulls, was soon admiring the way Toland and Truong helped dogs work through issues to become adoptable.

“Boo might not be alive if it weren’t for Mike and Tasha,” Paukstis said. “I liked their platform and purpose and the way they trained animals. I think it’s unique and I wanted to be involved in it.”

Toland said he and Truong had worked at other dog day care facilities, “got sick of telling the other people how to do

it” and decided to open their own, one with a philanthropy arm of taking in anxious, fearful and aggressive dogs and making them feel better, he said.

“Most day cares focus on getting nice dogs, the easier cases,” Toland said. “We want to provide for the dogs other people give up on.”

Toland and Truong designed the Dog District with canine safety and comfort in mind. Instead of cages, they use pens, kennels and large open areas, Toland said. A baby monitor at night alerts Toland and Truong to doggie distress, he added.

services the Dog District offers include dog dispatch (picking up and dropping off), reiki (as a calming tool), training and obedience during day care, free puppy playtime (Saturdays only), free hour-long group walks to previously trained district dogs (Sundays only, weather permitting) and dog rescue. Dog District grand opening was in February.

In addition to Paukstis, the Dog District has six other volunteers, Toland said. Yet, despite the business aspect of the Dog District, Toland stresses that neither he nor Truong focus on the paycheck.

“We love dogs. We’re not into money,” Toland said.

“And that will never change.”

It is surprising that so many of the adages of bridge are wrong more often than they are right.

This week we will look at: Do not finesse against your partner.

What is a finesse against partner? It occurs when a defender leads a low card in a suit, promising at least one honor in it, dummy plays low, and third hand does not play his highest card.

In this deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads his fourth-highest spade. How should East plan the defense?

When you open one or two no-trump, do not worry about unstopped suits. There are not enough words in bridge bidding to permit hands to be described down to the last atom.

South will need to drive out the club ace to establish sufficient tricks for his contract. If he also loses at least four spade tricks, he will go down. However, an East who was born and raised on third hand high will put up his spade king at trick one and the contract will cruise home.

East needs to realize that if he does play the spade king, South will get two spade tricks. Also, if West’s fourth-highest lead promises an honor in the suit, he must have the queen. So East can play his 10, finessing against partner, and take the trick. Then he can continue with his spade king and his third spade. West will win the next trick with his club ace and cash two spade tricks to defeat the contract.

What if South has the spade queen? It will lose only a tempo for East to withhold his king.

Here, finessing against partner is clearly correct.

Certain conditions make earwax buildup more likely Dear Dr. K: I have a lot of wax in my ear. Should I try to remove it? How? Dear Reader: Earwax is created when the oily substance made by cells lining the ear canal mixes with dead skin and debris. (I’ve put an illustration showing the ear canal on my website, www. askdoctork.com.) Normally, the mixture slowly moves out of the ear on its own.

But sometimes earwax gets blocked in the ear.

Certain conditions make this more likely: • An especially narrow or curvy ear canal.

• A skin condition, such as eczema, that is affecting the canal.

• Excessive hair growth in the canal.

• Cleaning your ears with Q-tip. This can push the wax farther back into the ear canal, where it builds up and hardens.

• Wearing a hearing aid or earplugs.

By collecting dead skin and debris, earwax helps clean the ear. It also helps prevent dryness and itching in the ear canal, protects the canal and eardrum from damage, and helps prevent infection.

In many people, the ear-

At any given time, the amount of the oily substance is so small you can’t even see it. However, when the wax does not seep out of the ear, it builds up inside the ear.

If the wax buildup in your ear isn’t causing trouble, leave it alone. You need to remove earwax only if it causes problems. If the wax blocks the canal, it can interfere with hearing until it’s removed. It also can cause a sensation of fullness or itching in the ear. Some textbooks say it can cause earache, dizziness or ringing in the ears, but I’m skeptical: I’ve never seen it.

To unblock the wax, try using an over-the-counter ear-cleaning treatment, such as Debrox, to flush out the wax. If this doesn’t work, or if you have a history of ear drum perforation or have had ear surgery, make an appoint-

ment with your doctor.

Never try to dig out earwax with something such as a Q-tip, paperclip or hairpin.

That could push the wax farther into the canal or injure your eardrum. Also, avoid ear candling. That’s when you stick a lighted hollow candle into the ear. Do people really do that? Yes, they do: There is a lot of dangerous folklore “medical” advice out there.

Believe me, it doesn’t work, and it could cause serious harm.

If you have frequent blockages, try using mineral oil drops or another earwax softener once a week. This might help keep wax from hardening and building up.

In general, your best bet is simply to clean your outer ear with a washcloth. That makes it easier for the wax that’s deeper inside the ear canal to ooze out. Above all, treat your ear well, and don’t deal with the annoying problem of earwax by doing something that will injure your ear.

Bidders will be required to comply with all laws, including those relating to the employment of labor and the payment of the general prevailing rate of hourly wages in the locality in which the work is to be performed for each craft or type of worker or mechanic needed to execute the contract or perform such work, also the general prevailing rate for legal holiday and overtime work (including, but not necessarily limited to 820 ILCS 130/0.01 et seq. the “Prevailing Wage Act”) as ascertained by the City shall be paid for each craft or type of worker needed to execute the contract or to perform such work.

If at the time this Contract is executed, or if during the term of this Contract, there is excessive unemployment in Illinois as defined in the Employment of Illinois Workers on Public Works Act, 30 ILCS 570-0.01 et seq., as two consecutive months of unemployment exceeding 5% Contractor agrees to employ a workforce that consists of at least 90% Illinois laborers. An “Illinois Laborer” is defined as any person who has resided in Illinois for at least 30 days and intends to become or remain an Illinois resident. The Bidder shall require all subcontractors (if any) to conform with said laws, and any rules or regulations now and thereafter issued pursuant to said laws by Bidders, his subcontractors, and/or anyone working through or on behalf of Bidder or Bidder's subcontractors. Certified payroll reports shall be submitted to the City of Joliet for primary and subcontractors.

No Bid will be received unless accompanied by Bid Security in the form of a Certified Check, Cashier's Check, or a Bid Bond equal to at least Ten percent (10%) of the maximum Bid, payable to the City of Joliet as a guarantee that after a Bid is accepted, Bidder will execute and file the Agreement and 100% Performance and Payment Bonds within 15 days after the Notice of Award.

The City of Joliet reserves the right to reject any or all Bids, to waive any technicality, and to accept any Bid which it deems advantageous. All Bids shall remain subject to acceptance for 60 days after the time set for receiving Bids.

Bidders must be prequalified with the City of Joliet to bid this project pursuant to Ordinance 7345. A bidder shall become prequalified in one of the following ways: 1) If a company is currently prequalified by the State of Illinois (via IDOT or the Capital Development Board), such person shall submit a copy of said prequalification to Office of the City Clerk prior to the date and time set for the bid opening.

2) If a company is not State of Illinois prequalified as described above, they shall submit a City of Joliet Prequalification Form and a financial statement. The prequalification forms can be obtrained from the City of Joliet website at http://www.cityofJoliet.info/index.aspx?page=97. This prequalification MUST be renewed yearly. The current price for City of Joliet prequalification is $175, which offsets the costs for independent auditor review of the documents. Those documents are to be submitted to City Clerk's Office, City of Joliet, 150 W. Jefferson Street, Joliet, IL 60432, at least 6 days prior to the bid opening and must be accompanied by $175 and need to be updated annually. In addition to the form being submitted, a financial statement prepared or certified by a duly certified public accountant should be also submitted. The certified public accountant shall also certify that he/she is presently a duly certified public accountant in the state in which he/she is certified. This financial statement must include the company's latest balance sheet and income statement showing the following items: Current Assets (e.g., cash joint venture accounts, accounts receivable, notes receivable, accrued income, deposits, materials inventory, and prepaid expenses). The evaluation of the independent auditor shall determine the amount of prequalification. Prequalificaiton shall be valid for a period of twelve (12) calendar months following the date of verification by the independent auditors.

3) Bids from bidders who have not submitted required prequalification documents as required in subsection (1) or (2) above shall not be opened.
