Lincoln Highway – New Lenox The Lincoln Highway Association helped start and refine the nature of road building in the early 20th century.

Without government funds or the proper private financing, the Lincoln Highway Association was not able to construct an actual new road but could use existing roads that could be properly marked as the official route, regardless of the road’s surface, whether it be gravel, dirt, brick or the like.

Soon, the Lincoln Highway Association’s new strategy included not only marking the new route and encouraging towns along the route to rename the road but also to entice local governments to help improve the route by pouring concrete sections to make it a model highway for the public. These new sections were referred to as Seedling Miles.

With the assistance of the Portland Cement Company, the Lincoln Highway Association also initiated a Seedling Miles program, which consisted of building short sections of concrete highway along poor stretches of country dirt roads.

The idea was to illustrate to the public that local tax dollars could help build good, durable concrete roadways.

The Lincoln Highway Association’s main objective was to encourage local communities to help fund additional paving projects that would reach the Seedling Miles from either side.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com Memorial Day ceremonies are moving experiences for Cliff Lauderdale, a Vietnam War veteran who will lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the ceremony Monday at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

“It will be emotional,” said Lauderdale, of Shorewood.

“They say there’s no crying in baseball. But I can’t keep the tears from flowing, especially when I see the people at the ceremony – the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts.”

This ceremony, which starts at 11 a.m., will be particularly meaningful for Lauderdale and other Vietnam War veterans. It comes during commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. “It really means a lot to me, especially for the soldiers who didn’t make it through the

war,” Lauderdale said. “A lot of people said that war was for nothing. But that’s hard for me to understand – that the guys who died over there died for nothing.”

Lauderdale, a former staff sergeant in the Army, served two tours in Vietnam.

When he sees people at Memorial Day ceremonies, Lauderdale believes there is an appreciation for his comrades who died in battle.

Veterans such as Lauderdale may have been who Maj. Gen. John A. Logan had in mind in 1868 when he declared Decoration Day was to be observed on May 30 of that year, commemorating those killed during the Civil War. It was the first of what would become the annual Memorial Day holiday.

It may be hard to grasp today, when Memorial Day is viewed by most as the first long weekend to enjoy summer rather than the reflective day

it was intended as. But Logan may have been recognizing a popular movement, not trying to force people to pay respect to the war dead, when he declared Decoration Day. The Veterans Affairs website history of Memorial Day notes that about 25 communities claim to have had the first Decoration Day ceremony a couple years before Logan made it official.

Logan’s own hometown of Carbondale claims to have held the first Decoration Day on April 29, 1866.

Such ceremonies probably were held even before then, said Robert Kuzma, a student of the Civil War and president of the board at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

‘We can’t forget’ Honor paid to local Civil War soldiers buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Joliet

By CHRISTINE JOHNSON Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – History came alive Sunday at Oakwood Cemetery in Joliet as members of the 10th Illinois Volunteer Regiment decorated graves and raised the colors at the Civil War Memorial.

Members of the National Society Daughters of the Union, Frederick A. Bartleson Chapter, were on hand to read the names of 75 local soldiers buried at the cemetery, many who died as a result of wounds suffered on the battlefield.

Chuck Lyons, a member of the 10th Illinois Volunteer Regiment coordinated this year’s event for the first time.

Lyons took on the responsibility from Robert Kuzma, president of the Joliet Area

Historical Museum, who has coordinated the memorial service for the past 10 years.

Both men, along with other members, are dedicated to educating the public by keeping this tradition alive.

“We can’t forget what these men did for us,” Lyons said.

“Boys stepped up for a cause they didn’t understand.”

A graveside memorial service also was held for Colonel Fredrick A. Bartleson.

Bartleson was the first man from Joliet to volunteer in the 20th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Approximately 200 men from Joliet and Will County served in that unit.

Whitey Miller golf class seeks golfers, donors

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The annual Whitey Miller Classic golf outing is moving to a bigger venue, and Will County police chiefs are seeking more golfers and donations for the charity event.

The Whitey Miller Classic, a charity event hosted by the Will County Chiefs of Police Association, benefits Illinois Special Olympics and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy counties. The event has moved from the former Woodbine Golf Course in Homer Glen to Broken Arrow Golf Course, 16325 Broken Arrow Drive in Lockport.

The golf outing, the association’s main fundraiser for the two organizations, is scheduled for June 4.

“As there are more special athletes and more people

need help with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the demand and cost for those organizations goes up and likewise we try to increase our donations,” event chairman Mark Eiting said.

Donation levels are $100 basic, $250 bronze, $500 gold and $1,000 platinum. Raffle items or gift items also can be contributed for use as door prizes.

Signs displaying the names of company sponsors will be posted at the 18 tees.

Along with recognition for each level, platinum donors might receive extra benefits, such as additional golfer slots for the outing, Eiting said.

Proceeds will be split between the Illinois Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run and the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.

Program aims to ease registration process for Troy district families

In October, the district upgraded its student information system to Skyward, a family and student access portal. With registration continuing for the next school year, staff and parents are finding it easier to browse the new portal.

Learning how to swim could save a life YMCA

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With pool season right around the corner, now might the perfect time for children to take swim lessons.

It could ultimately save a life.

“Taking lessons, wherever you take them, are important.

Just for them to be comfortable in the water if they’re ever in a situation, knowing the basic skills can save them,” said Chad Shingler, pool manager at the Joliet Park District’s Splash Station.

Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

At least seven people – including three children – drowned in pool and boating accidents last summer in Will and Grundy counties. Last June, a 3-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool in Morris and just weeks later, a 2-yearold girl drowned during a Fourth of July celebration.

Learning the basics can play a big role in saving a child’s life, said Jason Carey, aquatics director at the Galowich YMCA in Joliet.

“Floating on your back is one of the first things you learn as a swimmer. We want children, at the very least, [to] know how to float,” Carey said.

“Those are the beginning steps of swimming.”

But even if a child knows how to swim, parents should always pay constant, close attention, Shingler said.

“You should always be aware of what they’re doing, where they are. Always follow the facility’s rules,” Shingler said. “No roughhousing, no diving in waters less than 9 feet deep, things like that.”

Carey said pool users at the YMCA each wear red, yellow and blue wristbands,

depending on skill level. Children attending summer camp programs will participate in a program called “Go Blue.” It’s designed to have children advance to the blue wristbands through mini-swim lessons at the start of each day.

“Safety is our No. 1 concern,” Carey said.

Public safety

To maintain clean facilities and avoid outbreaks of recreational water illnesses, the Will County Health Department inspects nearly 130 facilities regularly throughout the season.

Having the right level of chemicals, along with the

proper drainage and working equipment, keep pools safe and clean, Will County Environmental Health Director Elizabeth Bilotta said.

Recreational water illnesses are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists, or having contact with contaminated water, according to the CDC. Most outbreaks linked to recreational swimming are caused by germs including cryptosporidium, giardia, shigella, norovirus and E. coli.

The illnesses can have unpleasant side effects, including diarrhea, cramps, nausea and fever.

ROMEOVILLE – The village of Romeoville might not be as safe today if John Allen’s sister hadn’t “wasted her time” 20 years ago.

Allen grew up in Chicago and was content working in construction and computer drafting when his sister spent several hours one day waiting in line for a Cook County Sheriff’s application.

“She brought it home and laid it on the table saying she didn’t know why she’d stayed there. She wasn’t going to do it,” Allen recalled. “I’d never thought about [law enforcement] before. I’m still not sure why but I filled it out and sent it in.”

Allen spent a year as a Cook County Correctional officer and three years as a guard at the Will County jail before joining the Romeoville Police Department 15 years ago. Last week, he was recognized as the department’s Police Officer of the Year.

“John is such a very positive and very helpful police officer. He has a true concern for the community,” Chief Mark Turvey said.

Romeoville officer recognized for community service

Channahon Park District recipient of Eagle Scout project CHANNAHON – Minooka Community High School senior Gabriel Lake recently attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open a new walking bridge in Channahon’s Community Park.

The 3-foot-wide, handmade wooden bridge with handrails at the disc golf course replaces two railroad ties previously used to cross over a creek. It’s much safer and easier to use, not only for disc golfers, but people walking dogs and even stroller striders.

The bridge, which is Lake’s Eagle Scout project, was quite an undertaking and took about seven months to complete.

For safety purposes, Lake needed an architect to come up with a set of plans, and former Boy Scout parent Kristi Wasiak stepped in and offered her services.

Lake got material donations from Ace Hardware in Minooka and Joliet, and Alexander Lumber donated some

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky lumber and gave the rest at a nice discount. Cash donations helped pay for the remainder of materials.

When it came time to build the bridge, which is 32 feet long, Lake and his dad, Tony Lake, and a few friends on occasion, put it together in pieces at their Channahon home.

With the help of other groups of Scouts, Lake installed the bridge last October.

When they returned in November to add the 4-foot ramps on each end, it was decided they were too steep. So it was back to the drawing board for a redesign and in November two 8-foot ramps were installed.

The entire project became not only a team effort, but a community effort, as well.

Diane Merriman learned after they were married the depths of Diane’s inner strength. A hairstylist, Diane worked until the day before her daughter Jennifer Pakula of Joliet was born in 1980.

Jason Merriman of Joliet was born two years later.

Diane doted on them and worried over their worries, never thinking about herself.

She attended all their activities and sporting events and did her best to protect them, Jason said.

“She would have put us in a bubble if she could,” Jennifer said.

Cancer and the side effects of treatment didn’t dampen Diane’s drive. For instance, Diane was room mom for Jason and Jennifer, so she did the same for her granddaughter Kaylee Pakula, age 8, Jennifer said.

Diane also was active in the women’s group at St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church in Joliet, even serving as its treasurer.

Despite severe neuropathy in her hands, Diane continued working as a hairstylist, but

she did that work at home, building in extra time with her clients to compensate for the deficiencies in her hands, Dave said.

In 2003, when it appeared Diane had beaten cancer for good, Dave surprised her with a new blue Mustang. But in 2014, Diane began having trouble walking. Diane had cancer in her hips, liver and heart.

Again Diane, still smiling, underwent treatment, and she had two good reasons to smile.

Her grandson Jacob Merriman was born in December; her granddaughter Alyson Pakula was born in January.

Her doctors suggested a stem cell transplant. That was not to be. Diane was 61 when she died April 12. Linda said the power of prayer kept Diane fighting so long. The family had a prayer chain several states wide, she added.

“I’ve always said that every problem in life has a solution,” Linda said, “but when God calls you home, that’s his decision. That’s something you cannot change.”

JOLIET – Diane Merriman of Joliet had angels watching over her.

She wore one pinned to her shoulder, said Diane’s sister, Linda Heap of Minooka. Her house and garden were filled with gifts of angels from family and friends.

Those angels helped Diane through an up-and-down cancer battle that extended more than 21 years.

“Her faith was very strong,” Linda said.

It was at their mother’s wake in 1992, Linda said, that Diane shared she had a lump on the right side of her neck. That lump was lymphoma, which was treated with chemotherapy. The lymphoma returned in 1997.

Treatment the second time around included radiation. It put Diane into remission, but it came at a price: damage to her esophagus and salivary glands.

Diane could not taste food and had difficulty swallowing.

“She was continually moistening her mouth,” said Dave Merriman, Diane’s husband.

“At one point, her esophagus was the size of a pencil. We almost lost her in 2001.”

That devotion to those who died in battle was widespread is not hard to understand. Not only was the war fought on U.S. soil, but the number of people connected to the war in some way was immense.

According to the Civil War Trust, the 620,000 men who died in the Civil War represented 2 percent of the U.S. population at the time. As a percentage

Campaign-style tactics fueling legislative gridlock

SPRINGFIELD – An already challenging legislative session has grown even trickier as Democrats and Republicans have begun targeting lawmakers with campaign-style mailers, TV ads and new multimillion-dollar political committees.

The Democratic Party, led

by House Speaker Michael Madigan, sent the first of what’s expected to be several mailers, telling voters last week that GOP lawmakers “failed” them on controlling property taxes, citing a vote orchestrated by Madigan. Meanwhile, Gov. Bruce Rauner dispensed $400,000 from his $20 million political fund to fellow Republicans, while a conservative group targeted Democrats in TV commercials.

Two political committees – one created to support Rauner’s agenda and another that plans to get involved in Democratic primaries – have banked about $13 million from a handful of wealthy donors since forming last month. Madigan recently held his annual fundraiser, and the state GOP has been sending

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – Authorities in Columbia County are using sonar to try to find the body of a 21-year-old Chicago man who disappeared in the Wisconsin River near Wisconsin Dells.

LISLE – A U.S. sailor from the Chicago suburb of Lisle has died in a noncombat incident during his first deployment overseas.

Democrats want a tax increase to help close a more than $6 billion deficit in next year’s budget, but Rauner has said he won’t agree to any new taxes until Democrats pass pieces of his agenda, which includes weakening labor unions, reducing the cost of workers’ compensation insurance and imposing term limits for lawmakers. Democrats say Rauner’s priorities would help corporations and wealthy people at the expense of the middle class; Rauner says they’re vital to creating jobs and improving Illinois’ economy.

The stalemate could push the General Assembly, which is scheduled to adjourn May 31, into an overtime session. It also could create uncertainty for schools, state agencies and programs in planning for the budget year that begins July 1.

Republican House Leader Jim Durkin last week accused Madigan of scheduling sham votes on issues such as

property taxes and a so-called “millionaires tax” with the sole purpose of getting GOP legislators on record, then using votes against them in political mailers. He pointed to the “farce” on the House floor as a sign Democrats are no longer seriously negotiating on Rauner’s agenda.

First-term Rep. Mark Batinick, the target of the Democrats’ first campaign ad, said the mailer was postmarked the day after he opted not to cast a vote on freezing property taxes, which Republicans said didn’t go as far Rauner suggested. The Plainfield Republican believes there’s a “fear of the mailer mentality” in the Statehouse.

“I do think it has absolutely contributed to the gridlock,” Batinick said.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said voters deserve to know when their representative “takes votes against the best interest of their district.”

He also said the mailers were a response to ads funded by the conservative Americans for Prosperity, which touted Rauner’s proposal to freeze property taxes and ripped about a dozen Democrats.

The U.S. Defense Department said in a statement that 24-yearold Petty Officer 3rd Class Ryan D. Burris died Thursday in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The statement gave no information about the nature of the incident, which took place at the Zayed Military City and was still under investigation. He was deployed in support of the operation against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

Burris went to Lisle High School and joined the Navy in 2012. His grandfathers, father and uncle also served in the military.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS 2 cases loom in Cleveland CLEVELAND – Cleveland emerged unscathed and intact after a day of protests following the acquittal of a white patrolman who had been on trial in the shooting deaths of two unarmed black suspects killed in a 137-shot barrage of police gunfire.

Officers arrested 71 people the night after the verdict, although there was nothing close to the violence other cities have experienced over the treatment of black suspects. But Cleveland is not yet done dealing with deadly police encounters.

Two other high-profile police-involved deaths still hang over the city: a boy holding a pellet gun fatally shot by a rookie patrolman and a mentally ill woman in distress who died after officers took her to the ground and handcuffed her.

The deaths of 12-year-old Tamir Rice and 37-year-old Tanisha Anderson occurred just eight days apart in November. A successful carbon offset, or “cap-and-trade,” market could play a big part in cutting China’s emissions – and help the world tackle global warming.

Already launched in Europe, California and a few other spots, such carbon offset markets limit how much carbon can be emitted a year by factories and businesses.

Audiard’s ‘Dheepan’ wins Palme d’Or at Cannes

CANNES, France – The 68th Cannes Film Festival was brought to a surprising close Sunday with Jacques Audiard’s Sri Lankan refugee drama taking the festival’s top honor, the Palme d’Or. The choice of “Dheepan,” as selected by a jury led by Joel and Ethan Coen, left some critics scratching their heads. While the French filmmaker has drawn acclaim for films such as “A Prophet” and “Rust and Bone,” some critics were disappointed by the thriller climax of Audiard’s film. “Dheepan” is about a trio of Sri Lankans who pretend to be a family in order to flee their wartorn country and are settled in a housing project outside Paris.

Flash floods in Oklahoma, Texas kill 2; 100s of homes gone

By SETH ROBBINS The Associated Press SAN MARCOS, Texas – Record rainfall was wreaking havoc across a swath of Texas and the Midwest on Sunday, causing flash floods in normally dry riverbeds, spawning tornadoes and forcing at least 2,000 people to flee.

Tornadoes struck, severely damaging an apartment complex in Houston, Texas. A firefighter in Oklahoma was swept to his death while trying to rescue 10 people in high water. And the body of a man was recovered from a flooded area along the Blanco River, which rose 26 feet in just one hour and left piles of wreckage 20 feet high, authorities in Texas said.

“It looks pretty bad out there,” said Hays County emergency management coordinator Kharley Smith, describing the destruction in Wimberley, a community that is part of a fast-growing corridor between Austin and San Antonio. “We do have whole streets with maybe one or two houses left on them

and the rest are just slabs,” she said.

From 350 to 400 homes were destroyed in Wimberley, many of them washed away, Smith said. Several people remained missing. Kenneth Bell, the emergency management coordinator in nearby San Marcos, said the damage in Hays County alone amounts to “millions of dollars.”

Authorities also warned people to honor a nighttime curfew and stay away from damaged areas, since more rain was on the way, threatening more floods with the ground saturated and waterways overflowing.

Rivers rose so fast that whole communities woke up Sunday surrounded by water. The Blanco crested above 40 feet – more than triple its flood stage of 13 feet – swamping Interstate 35 and forcing parts of the busy north-south highway to close. Rescuers used pontoon boats and a helicopter to pull people out.

Dallas also faced severe flooding from the Trinity River, which was expected to crest near 40 feet Monday and

lap at the foundations of an industrial park. The Red and Wichita rivers also rose far above flood stage.

Heather Ruiz returned from work early Sunday to ankle-deep water and a muddy couch inside her home in San Marcos. She wasn’t sure what to do next. “Pick up the pieces and start all over I guess. Salvage what can be salvaged and replace what needs to be replaced,” Ruiz said.

This May already is the wettest on record for several cities in the southern Plains states, with days still to go and more rain on the way. So far this year, Oklahoma City has recorded 27.37 inches of rain. Last year, the state’s capital got only 4.29 inches.

The reasons include a prolonged warming of Pacific Ocean sea surface temperatures, which generally results in cooler air, coupled with an active southern jet stream and plentiful moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, said Meteorologist Forrest Mitchell at National Weather Service office in Norman, Oklahoma.

Defense chief: Iraqis ‘lacked will to fight’

By KEN DILANIAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The Islamic State group’s takeover of the provincial capital Ramadi is stark evidence that Iraqi forces lack the “will to fight,” Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in a TV interview that aired Sunday. The harsh assessment raised new questions about the Obama administration’s strategy to defeat the extremist group that has seized a strategically important swath of the Middle East.

Although Iraqi soldiers “vastly outnumbered” their opposition in the capital of Anbar province, they quickly withdrew last Sunday without putting up much resistance

from the city in Iraq’s Sunni heartland, Carter said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

The interview aired on Sunday.

The Iraqis left behind large numbers of U.S.-supplied vehicles, including several tanks, now presumed to be in Islamic State hands.

“What apparently happened is the Iraqi forces just showed no will to fight,” Carter said. “They were not outnumbered; in fact, they vastly outnumbered the opposing force. That says to me, and I think to most of us, that we have an issue with the will of the Iraqis to fight ISIL and defend themselves.”

The White House declined to comment on Sunday.

Iraqi lawmaker Hakim al-Zamili, the head of the parliamentary defense and security committee, called Carter’s comments “unrealistic and baseless,” in an interview with The Associated Press.

“The Iraqi army and police did have the will to fight IS group in Ramadi, but these forces lack good equipment, weapons and aerial support,” said al-Zamili, a member of the political party headed by radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who is stridently anti-American.

American officials say they are sending anti-tank weapons to the Iraqi military. But they also noted that Iraqi forces were not routed from Ramadi – they left of their own accord,

frightened in part by a powerful wave of Islamic State group suicide truck bombs, some the size of the one that destroyed the federal building in Oklahoma City two decades ago, said a senior State Department official who spoke to reporters last week under ground rules he not be named.

“The ISF was not driven out of Ramadi,” Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said last week. “They drove out of Ramadi.”

A senior defense official noted that the troops who fled Ramadi had not been trained by the U.S. or its coalition partners. The official was not authorized to address the matter publicly and spoke on con-

dition of anonymity.

Still, the fall of Ramadi is reviving questions about the effectiveness of the Obama administration’s approach in Iraq, a blend of retraining and rebuilding the Iraqi army, prodding the Shiite-dominated government in Baghdad to reconcile with the nation’s Sunnis and bombing Islamic State group targets from the air without committing American ground combat troops.

Obama’s strategy is predicated on Baghdad granting political concessions to the country’s alienated Sunnis, who are a source of personnel and money for the Islamic State group. But there has been little visible progress on that front.

John Nash, wife, ‘A Beautiful Mind’ inspiration, die in N.J.

By BRUCE SHIPKOWSKI The Associated Press TRENTON, N.J. – John Forbes Nash Jr., a mathematical genius whose struggle with schizophrenia was chronicled in the 2001 movie “A Beautiful Mind,” has died along with his wife in a car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike. He was 86.

Nash and Alicia Nash, 82, of Princeton Township, were killed in a taxi crash Saturday, state police said. A colleague who had received an award with Nash in Norway earlier in the week said they had just flown home and the couple had taken a cab home from the airport.

Russell Crowe, who portrayed Nash in “A Beautiful Mind,” tweeted that he was “stunned.”

“An amazing partnership,” he wrote. “Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts.”

In a statement Sunday, his co-star in the film, Jennifer Connelly, called the couple “an inspiration,” and the film’s director, Ron Howard, tweeted that “it was an honor telling part of their story.”

Known as brilliant and eccentric, Nash was associat-

ed with Princeton University for many years, most recently serving as a senior research mathematician. He won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1994 for his work in game theory, which offered insight into the dynamics of human rivalry. It is considered one of the most influential ideas of the 20th century.

Just a few days ago, Nash had received a prize from the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters in Oslo with New York University mathematician Louis Nirenberg, who said he’d chatted with the couple for an hour at the airport in Newark before they’d gotten a cab.

Nirenberg said Nash was a truly great mathematician and “a kind of genius.”

Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber said the Nashes were special members of the university community.

“John’s remarkable achievements inspired generations of mathematicians, economists and scientists who were influenced by his brilliant, groundbreaking work in game theory, and the story of his life with Alicia moved millions of readers and moviegoers who

marveled at their courage in the face of daunting challenges,” Eisgruber said in a statement.

New Jersey State Police say the Nashes were both ejected from the cab in the crash around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Monroe Township, about 15 miles northeast of Trenton.

The cab driver was hospitalized.

News of the deaths was shocking to Nirenberg.

“We were all so happy together,” Nirenberg said. “It seemed like a dream.”

John David Stier, Nash’s son with his first wife, said he learned of the death Sunday morning. “It’s very upsetting,” he said.

In an autobiography written for The Nobel Foundation website, Nash said delusions caused him to resign as a faculty member at MIT. He also spent several months in New Jersey hospitals on an involuntary basis.

However, Nash’s schizophrenia diminished through the 1970s and 1980s as he “gradually began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced lines of thinking,” he wrote.

Many great memories for area athletes

By JEFF De GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent CHARLESTON – The experience, whether learned from a previous year or from taking it in for the first time, was a theme among area athletes this past weekend at the state girls track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University.

Twenty-five area individual athletes and eight relay teams claimed All-State honors in the three classes.

Plainfield North junior Rachael Lau placed third in the Class 3A 3,200-meter run and went for the title.

“I went for the win,” Lau said. “I knew after last week’s sectional that (Judy) Pendergast from Naperville North would go out hard. If I wanted any chance to win, I would have to go with her. It didn’t work out, but it was a great experience. It was my first time in the fast heat. I still have a year to get better.”

Minooka sophomore Ashley Tutt placed seventh in the same race. She had finished 13th in the 3,200 as a freshman.

“The experience from last year really helped,” Tutt said.

“I stayed focused, and running with the pack really helped.

I’m really happy with my time (10:54.55). I felt good, but now we have to get ready for cross country.”

Lincoln-Way West junior Natalie Krol, who placed in the 1,600 last year but ran the 1,600 and 3,200 double this year, talked about the experience of being at the state meet.

“This is what I was looking forward to again,” Krol said. “It was great being here with all my teammates and experiencing the whole atmosphere.”

Lockport’s 4x800 relay, which placed eighth, had some extra motivation at this year’s meet.

“We ran this race for our distance coach (Evon Schlotter),” senior Haley Beaumont said. “It was her last race to watch us run.”

The Porters’ relay placed fifth in 2014 and had three returning members back, seniors Beaumont and Emmie Hahn and sophomore Morgan Bollinger. Sophomore Kayla

“This feels amazing to medal at the state meet,” Isom said.

“My teammates have been so encouraging this season.”

Bolingbrook’s victory in the 4x100 relay, by one-one hundredth of a second over Lincoln-Way East, shocked the crowd but not any of the Raider foursome.

“We were on this track practicing our handoffs early in the morning since we have been here,” said anchor Jessica Watkins, a senior who will be running at DePaul.

“We were very confident

coming into the finals,” said Asha Wallace, the Raiders’ third runner. “This is such a wonderful feeling.”

After placing in three events last season, Seneca junior Willow Stuedemann placed fourth in the Class 1A 100 this year.

“I want to make sure I get back here next year for my senior season,” Stuedemann said. “Nothing better than competing at the state track meet.”

Romeoville’s Cierra Pulliam moved up a spot from last year and was runner-up in the Class 3A triple jump. Pulliam, a senior, will attend Lewis University in the fall.

“Being here last year really helped for this meet,” Pulliam said. “I knew the set-up, how everything would go. There were no surprises. I’m very happy today, and it is a great way to end my high school career.”

Lincoln-Way Central senior Ashley Raehsler was all smiles after finishing fifth in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump.

“I’m really, really happy,” said Raehsler, who will attend Grand Valley State. “I struggled a little in the prelims, but today is a great day. I watched video last night of my jumps,

and saw I was reaching for the board. This is my first year of triple jumping, and I had my best jump ever here at state. It was fun and a good time.”

Reed-Custer junior Emma Johnson, who finished 11th with a throw of 37-9¼ in shot put, was not disappointed.

“I was shocked I made it to finals,” Johnson said. “This is only my second year of throwing, I threw my best ever at state, and I’m close to the school record. This experience will really motivate me to get ready for next year.”

The 400 saw the area come away with two runner-up performances both by seniors.

Minooka’s Ashleigh Wilson ran a personal best 55.54 for her second-place finish in Class 3A. “Last year, I ran a 58.30 and didn’t qualify for the finals,” said Wilson, who is headed to Illinois State. “The experience really helped. I ran a smart race in the finals and came away with a second. It’s sad that high school is over, but it’s also the beginning of a new chapter in my life.”

Deven Bax, a Lincoln-Way West senior, also ran a best 56.91 to take the silver in Class 2A. “I’m super excited,” Bax said. “To be second in the state is great. I really feel I ran my race at the right pace.”

Bax, who also was the point guard on West’s basketball team, compared the two sports.

“You don’t feel like this after a basketball game,” Bax said.

“But this is a great feeling, a real sense of accomplishment.”

Two injured in Coyne’s pits; lead mechanic honored

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent SPEEDWAY, Ind. – It was the worst-case scenario for Dale Coyne Racing: a three-car accident in the pits, all of them Coyne’s cars, resulting in injuries to two crew members.

Pippa Mann’s car, not completely in the outside lane of the pit lane because of other traffic, was hit by James Davison, who was exiting his pit box, four pits ahead of Mann’s. The collision sent Davison’s car into the pit box of Tristan Vautier, hitting Daniel Jang, Vautier’s right rear tire changer.

Jang was flipped into the air.

Jang, whose right ankle was broken, was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and underwent surgery late Sunday afternoon. Senerius was treated and released from the track hospital with a sore left foot.

The unanswered question is why Davison was released from his pit box by right front tire changer Todd Phillips with oncoming traffic, including a teammate, approaching. Mann hadn’t completely moved into the outside lane of the pit area.

“It was a very unfortunate situation,” Davison said. “I was working my way toward the top 10. Obviously (the crew’s health) is the priority. I think we just took his (Jang’s) feet away from him rather than run

him over. Hopefully, he’ll make a full recovery.”

The crash ended the day for both Davison and Vautier, who placed 27th and 28th, respectively, each running 116 laps.

Davison’s day almost ended in the first turn of the first lap, when in avoiding the crash between Takuma Sato and Sage Karam, Davison slid to the inside, and the back of his car clipped and spun Ryan Briscoe.

The tire mark from Briscoe’s car was evident on Davison’s left rear wing plate.

SPEEDWAY, Ind. – Juan Pablo Montoya won the Indianapolis 500 in a near-walkover 15 years ago, leading 167 laps driving for Chip Ganassi as a rookie before embarking on Formula 1 and NASCAR careers with varied success.

On Sunday, Montoya had to drive the wheels off his Penske Racing-prepared Dallara-Chevrolet to score his second victory Juan Pablo in the hallmark Montoya competition of world racing, holding off teammate Will Power and Ganassi’s Charlie Kimball and Scott Dixon in one of the most competitive 500s in recent memory.

Montoya captured the 99th edition by passing both leader Power and Dixon for the lead at the end of the 197th lap, scant yards before the yard of bricks signifying the finish line, and holding them off for the last 7.5 miles. He had been unable to do so when he

Moldenhauer was 0 for 3 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but he delivered a two-out RBI single to score Charlie White with an insurance run that gave the Slammers a 2-0 lead and

The Slammers (5-4) have scored a league-leading 51 runs through their first nine games. They finished their homestand with a 5-1 record.

By GREG BEACHAM The Associated Press ANAHEIM, Calif. – After 17 grueling periods crammed into just four games, the Anaheim Ducks have no doubt they can play at hockey’s highest level with the Blackhawks.

Heading into a pivotal Game 5 on Monday in the Western Conference finals, the Ducks also realize their two gut-wrenching overtime losses were missed opportunities to take out their veteran, playoff-tested opponents – and they can’t afford two more.

The Hawks evened the series at two games apiece Saturday night with Antoine Vermette’s goal in double overtime. The 5-4 win was the Hawks’ fourth OT victory of an increasingly charmed postseason.

Anaheim still hasn’t lost in regulation in the entire Stanley Cup playoffs, but the Hawks have a knack for big moments that the Ducks haven’t matched in this series.

So the Ducks will keep hitting hard, skating well and hoping the late-game bounces – and a few more whistles – start going against the Hawks.

“I think (the Hawks) know they’re in a series,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said Sunday. “I mean, I don’t think they think they’ve had it very easy. It’s our job to continue to

make them feel that way.”

Both teams spent Sunday flying to the West Coast and resting up for the next collision in an already-draining series. The Ducks have followed through on their plan to batter the Hawks’ shortstaffed defense with relentless checking and hard hits, but the Hawks are surviving so far.

“We’re just going to keep with our game plan,” said Ducks center Ryan Kesler, who has been matched against Hawks captain Jonathan Toews all series. “I think it will wear them down. It’s going to wear them down. No human can withstand that many hits. We’re going to keep banging out there and going after them.”

The Hawks were credited with 52 hits of their own in Game 4, but that shaky defense also allowed three goals in 37 seconds in the third period, blowing a late twogoal lead. The defensemen playing heavy minutes don’t acknowledge any damage from Anaheim’s cumulative pressure: Brent Seabrook dismissed the idea with a shrug and a smile.

“I think it’s both ways,” Hawks winger Bryan Bickell said. “They are wearing us down, but they’re getting tired from wearing us down.”

And for all the entertainment value of the first four

games, one other aspect of this series is clear from the franchises’ first playoff meeting: These West powers already have learned to dislike each other.

Hawks goalie Corey Crawford exemplified the growing mutual distaste late in regulation of Game 4 when he delivered an unpenalized, two-handed slash to Matt Beleskey’s chest, nearly letting in a winning goal in the process. Afterward, Beleskey said he is “sick of” the Hawks.

“This series is pretty amazing,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “Every game is very close, very competitive.

The road to trying to win the Cup has some amazing swings and highs, lows and twists and turns. The deeper you get in series, it is all the more challenging. Our group’s experience and know-how and the will to find ways, last night was a great demonstration of that.”

A five-goal performance in Game 4 was a boost to the Hawks, who managed only three even-strength goals in the first 14 periods of this series against Ducks goalie Frederik Andersen.

“I thought the last game was a big step to find the back of the net against Andersen,” Bickell said. “You see that he is kind of human, because he’s been standing on his head as of late.”

White Sox fall flat in lobsided loss to Twins

CHICAGO – A week ago, the White Sox believed they had turned around their season with a six-game winning streak.

But after dropping five of six games – including an 8-1 loss Sunday to the Minnesota Twins – the Sox again are looking for answers.

“Extremely frustrating,” Sox first baseman Adam LaRoche said. “We are not just getting beat: we are beating ourselves and making good pitchers look great.

“It’s embarrassing.”

Brian Dozier homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the Twins. Dozier hit a solo shot off Jose Quintana (2-5) in the first inning and a three-run homer off Scott Carroll in the seventh for his second career multi-home run game.

Jose Abreu homered in the fourth inning for the Sox, his

first since May 9.

After taking the first game to extend the winning streak, the Sox concluded the homestand with a 2-5 mark to fall into last place in the AL Central two percentage points behind the Cleveland Indians.

Sox announcer Hawk Harrelson to miss trip

CHICAGO – White Sox TV announcer Hawk Harrelson will miss the team’s 11-game trip because of a minor surgical procedure.

The team said Sunday that Bulls radio play-by-play announcer Chuck Swirsky will fill in for the 73-year-old Harrelson on the broadcasts with Steve Stone.

The Sox didn’t disclose what type of procedure Harrelson will have.

The trip begins Monday night in Toronto.

Foltynewicz of Minooka pitches into 8th for win

ATLANTA – Atlanta rookie Mike Foltynewicz had command of his pitches, and that gave him the edge he needed to top Jimmy Nelson and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Foltynewicz threw three-hit ball for 72⁄3 innings, leading the Braves over Nelson and the Brewers, 2-1, Sunday.

Foltynewicz (3-1), a Minooka High School graduate, allowed one run in his longest start in the majors. He struck out seven with only one walk.

“He was dominant, really, the whole game,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “It was a nice start to build on.”

Foltynewicz kept his pitch count down early, throwing only 52 through five innings.

“We just couldn’t get anything going against him,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “He’s got a good fastball and we were having quick at-bats. He was just good.”

Ducks must shake off OT loss to Hawks before crucial Game 5

PHOENIX – The Cubs went 3-3 on their trip to the Southwest. Not great, Sunday’s starter Jason Hammel said, but not awful, either.

“Five hundred on the road and you take care of business at home – you are going to end up in a pretty good spot,” he said after the Cubs lost Sunday to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-3.

Both losses in Arizona were by one run, including Friday night’s series opener in 13 innings.

“We keep playing these tight ball games,” Hammel said, “sooner or later they will start going our way. We continue to battle even though we are down. You really can’t shake your head or get down. We played good baseball.”

Chris Coghlan hit a two-run homer and Miguel Montero had a solo shot against his former Arizona teammates, but it wasn’t quite enough offense for the Cubs.

Edwards gets first win for new JGR team

By PETE IACOBELLI The Associated Press CONCORD, N.C. – Carl Edwards won for the first time in two seasons – and the first time since joining Joe Gibbs Racing – moving in front 20 laps from the end to take the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night.

Edwards hadn’t won in 49 races since November 2013 at Texas Motor Speedway. He ended his long association with Roush Fenway Racing this past offseason, hoping for bigger things with JGR. He got it at Charlotte Motor Speedway after shuffling in front as most of his competitors needed green-flag pit stops close to the end.

Most figured Edwards would have to stop, too, but remained on the track and cruised to his first victory at Charlotte.

Greg Biffle was second, followed

by Dale Earnhardt Jr., pole-sitter Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr., who notched his 11th top-10 finish in 12 events this season.

Edwards parked his car, did his signature back flip and rushed into the waiting arms of his crew, all jumping around in celebration.

He climbed into the stands to grab

the checkered flag before heading to victory lane.

“JGR is back,” Edwards said.

The win gave JGR a Charlotte sweep, Denny Hamlin won the AllStar Race on May 16th.

Hamlin looked like he might gain the sweep on his own, leading the pack with less than 50 laps remaining. But Hamlin felt a vibration in a wheel and had no choice but to head to the pits to straighten out – costing him his chance at the victory.

Hamlin finished eighth. The fourth Joe Gibbs racer, new father Kyle Busch, was 11th in his first points race since breaking his right leg and left in a crash at Daytona three months ago.

Edwards capped racing’s biggest day. It began when Nico Rosberg got his third straight win at the Monaco Grand Prix. It continued in Indianapolis when one-time NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya won the Indy 500 for the second time.

Edwards joins Hamlin and Kenseth with wins this season, all figuring to make the Sprint Cup season-ending chase for the championship.

Said Penske, basking in the glow of his record 16th 500 triumph, “I come here for one reason, and that’s to win. It’s a great place to say, ‘Hey, this is where we tee it up.’”

Next year, Montoya will find his face on the Borg-Warner Trophy a second time, as well as on the ticket for the 100th 500Mile Race.

“This is what auto racing is all about,” Montoya said.

Charles Caleb Colton, an eccentric English cleric and writer who died in 1832, said, “Deliberate with caution, but act with decision.”

That is a good rule for bridge.

When the dummy comes down, declarer should deliberate with care, looking for dangers to his contract and trying to find a line of play to get around them safely.

In today’s deal, for example, South is in four spades. West leads the heart queen. After winning with his ace, what should declarer do?

South’s jump to four spades is a slight stretch, but we love to bid vulnerable games because they pay a big bonus. Any time you smell a game, bid game.

Declarer seems to have four losers: two spades, one heart and one club. But South can eliminate that heart loser by ruffing it on the board.

However, should he play a round of trumps first?

If the defenders are astute, he should not. West will win with his king and lead his remaining trump. East will take that trick and play his last trump to denude the dummy of spades. Then declarer will lose those four tricks.

Instead, South should cash his heart king and cautiously ruff the heart two with dummy’s spade jack.

Do not risk East’s overruffing the spade two. As West overcalled in hearts, there is a great risk that East has only a doubleton heart -- and he probably played high-low to emphasize that fact.

In one of my classes, though, a West cautiously passed over one spade. Now South, unwarned, incautiously ruffed the third heart low and went down.

Now, I’m not saying you should never eat foods rich in saturated fats or trans fats -- just that you should eat them infrequently.

And I’m not saying you should now eat as many eggs, shrimp and other cholesterol-rich foods as you would like.

Eating a lot of cholesterol can raise your blood cholesterol. For example, we’ve talked previously in this column before about eggs. Current science finds that it’s OK to eat an egg a day, except for diabetics or people at high risk for heart disease. But eating a lot more eggs than that is not a good idea.

I worry every time I pass on the latest results of nutrition research.

That’s because, as with any type of research, the more you study the more you learn. And sometimes what you learn modifies what you previously thought; that can’t be avoided. What you have every right to expect, from your doctor and from columns like this one, is the best current understanding. But sometimes that understanding will be amended by new discoveries.

So when you’re shopping and looking at the Nutrition Facts label on foods, don’t ignore the amount of cholesterol in the food: Eating a lot of cholesterol-rich foods on a regular basis still is a bad idea. But pay more attention to the listing of saturated fats and trans fats. They are what you should avoid.

Dear Doctor K: Does the amount of cholesterol you eat affect the cholesterol levels in your blood?

Dear Reader: I’m glad you asked this question, because I think doctors and the news media have not made it clear.

For decades, doctors and food scientists have warned against the dangers of eating foods high in cholesterol. That seemed to make sense.

First, high blood levels of so-called “bad” (LDL) cholesterol definitely are bad for your health.

Second, it seems logical that the more cholesterol you take into your body when you eat, the higher the cholesterol in your blood.

But there’s growing agreement among nutrition scientists that cholesterol in food has little effect on cholesterol in the bloodstream. This topic was discussed last year by the scientific advisory panel for the not-yet-released 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. A summary statement from their meeting stated that “Cholesterol is not considered a nutrient of concern for overconsumption.”

Translation: You don’t need to worry about cholesterol in your food.

What has changed?

The cholesterol in your body comes from two sources. Some comes from the cholesterol in your food, but most is made by your liver. If your liver is stimulated to make lots of cholesterol, levels rise in your blood.

What stimulates the liver to make cholesterol? Primarily, saturated and trans fats. On my website, AskDoctorK. com, I’ve listed foods that are rich in saturated fats and foods rich in trans fats.
