news@theherald-news.com COAL CITY – A Marine from Coal City was found dead Tuesday afternoon in North Carolina after apparently falling from an aircraft during a training flight.

The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Marine Steven who fell Mon- Hancock d a y e v e n i n g in 2011 from an MV-22B Osprey tilt rotor aircraft was found dead late Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release sent Tuesday night from the Marines. It appears he died as a result of the fall.

Although the Marines said they could not identify the man

until 24 hours after the notification of next of kin, the family of Steven Hancock of Coal City had said earlier Tuesday afternoon that their son was the one who fell out of the aircraft.

Sue Hancock said she was notified Monday night that her son was missing.

“We’re waiting for an update from the Marines,” she said Tuesday prior to the Marines releasing the statement saying the body of the missing Marine had been found.

“We deeply mourn the loss of a member of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing family today.

I’d like to extend my sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of our Marine,” Maj. Gen. Robert Hedelund, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing commanding general, said in the news release. “I also want to extend my thanks to the community for

their tireless efforts throughout this search.”

Hancock was a 2011 graduate of Coal City High School. He was a member of Coal City Boy Scout Troop 466 and achieved Eagle Scout status.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family,” Superintendent Kent Bugg said after hearing the news. “Our thoughts definitely go out to his sister Mallory, who just graduated this weekend.

“He was a great kid. He was serving his country so that obviously says a lot about him and his character,” Bugg continued.

He said the student services staff has been made aware of the community’s loss and will have people available for anyone who may need to talk at the school.

Joliet working quickly to handle emerald ash borer Funding to remove and replace trees a concern

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – By next year, 90 percent of the ash trees in Joliet could be dead, victims of the emerald ash borer.

How quickly the city can remove the dead and dying trees from its parkways and what it can replace them with were among the topics discussed by the Joliet City Council on Tuesday.

Under the current practice of using city crews on smaller trees – those less than 15 inches in diameter – and contractors on the larger ones, removal of the estimated 8,000 to 10,000 ash trees could take more than 10 years, according to Jim Teiber, the city’s arborist.

“We’re going to have to start with the larger trees first,” Teiber said. “We’re going to have to take care of the larger ones that could come down on houses and cars first.”

Smaller trees that pose less of a threat, especially those in

newer subdivisions to the far west and east, are a secondary priority, Teiber said.

Funding has been the key issue. Teiber noted his department’s $350,000 budget “is not going to get us very far.”

Of that money, $200,000 is set aside for emerald ash borer hazard removal.

Teiber noted that the village of Tinley Park recently spent $1.5 million to remove its 9,000 ash trees.

The challenge for Joliet only branches out from there: • Due to the city’s financial constraints, no money has been budgeted for routine maintenance of other tree species for several years. As the trees continue to grow, so does the potential cost of maintaining them, Teiber said.

• Before it can get a handle on which trees need to be removed, the city will need to inventory them. It recently purchased software for that task. Unfortunately, staff has had no luck in finding qualified applicants for its four

tree inventory summer intern positions, according to City Manager Jim Hock.

• There is no funding to replace trees removed from the parkway. Teiber and Hock plan to propose spending $150,000 this year to replace 500 trees.

Ultimately, the council will have to make a decision on how to deal with the issue citywide, Hock said.

Several options are available. For instance, the Illinois Finance Authority is offering zero percent loans over 20 years to municipalities to replace trees lost to the emerald ash borer, Hock said.

The city also could take advantage of contracting a grower to provide trees to the city over several years, a method which could be 25 to 50 percent cheaper than purchasing through a nursery, Teiber said.

Hock said staff will present a long-term tree replacement plan to the council later this fall.

Steven Hancock from Coal City, who lives in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and lists his work as the United Stated Marine Corps, was filled Tuesday with well-wishes from loved ones.

“Hang in there Steven, your men will find you. Stay strong cousin. You are a true warrior.

We all love you and are praying for you,” read a post from a woman who identified herself as a cousin, when Marines were searching for Hancock.

The aircraft was conducting a training flight Monday evening when the Marine disappeared about 45 miles west of Marine Corps Air Station New River, the Associated Press reported.

Students at Joliet West rebuild robot to help police department

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The police department had a unique second-semester project for a small group of high school students – rebuild Robocop.

The MARCbot IV-N was originally used by the military for examining improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan. It wasn’t working when the Joliet Police Department obtained it as free surplus last year.

SWAT team officers Matt Breen and Chris Gombosi were optimistic they could get it working until the casing was opened.

“It was well above our technical level, but I’d read about the Joliet West Robotics Club in The Herald-News and wondered if they could take a look at it,” Gombosi said.

Teacher John Barber thought the task would be ideal for some students in the Science Technology Engineering and Math Academy to use as a service learning project. Seniors Shane McCarthy and Jeremy Rateike, junior Dyllan Potter and sophomores Jake Blaauw and Collin Mardian began their robot repair in December.

McCarthy figured out the gear pattern and how the electric servomechanism moved. Potter opened the gearbox while Rateike contacted companies for parts.

Many parts were donated to the project and boreholes were machined at no charge.

“Our only cost has been replacing one 20-cent screw that we stripped out,” Barber said.

“There was a lot of trial and error,” Mardian said. “[Checking] if something didn’t fit, the shaft couplings are aluminum, so you can’t crank them tight or they’ll

crack.”

But last week, Breen, Gombosi and SWAT Team Commander Dwayne Killian met with the students and learned to use the old Xbox video game controller that moves the robot.

The controller attaches to a laptop computer linked to the robot with an antenna that can pick up signals for a substantial distance.

“At least all the way down the halls of the school,” Barber told Killian.

The robot, which sold for about $10,000 when it was new, weighs less than 40 pounds and has four oversized tires for traveling over rough terrain. A camera is mounted on an arm that can extend to about three feet in height to look inside a window, or lower down to inspect under a truck. The camera has night vision, GPS and recording capabilities.

It will not be used for bomb inspection, but will likely be used if the SWAT team is called out. The robot could take pictures or bring a cellphone so officers can communicate with a barricaded subject. The SWAT team has used a small treaded machine with a loudspeaker at previous calls.

“If there’s an incident at a house we want to see around all four sides of it when we get there,” Killian said. “Now this can drive around and if it gets shot at or bit, I really don’t care.”

The students, who worked on the project during computer repair class and after school, were pleased to see their skills will now be put into real-world action. Previous robots have been entered in school competitions.

“I enjoy RC [remote control] cars. Getting this to [move by remote] was better to see,” Mardian said.

Will County Courthouse fee faces challenge

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com Getting lawmakers on board with a fee increase to help Will County build a new courthouse is a heavy lift in the midst of an election year, said Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood.

“Bottom line, it’s an election year and it’s a fee increase.

Folks look at that stuff,” said Walsh, the bill’s lead sponsor in the Illinois House.

House Bill 5889 would give the Will County Board authority to impose filing court fees not exceeding $30 to help pay for new judicial facilities.

Gov. Pat Quinn, all House members and one-third of senators are up for re-election this year, making a fee increase – even one that applies only to Will County – a tough vote, Walsh said.

“We’re working it. I’d say we’re close [to the 60 votes needed],” Walsh Jr. said. “There’s still apprehension with some legislators.”

Richard Schoenstedt said Tuesday the fee would greatly help the county’s efforts for a new courthouse by raising between

$1.5 and $2 million for the project depending on the fee structure, which would be set by the county board.

“If it gets passed now, we can start collecting money sooner and that would translate into it getting built sooner,” he said.

“It’s a building block of our revenue stream. If this gets passed, we no longer have to be concerned about whether or not that funding will be available for us.”

The user fees would be imposed on both parties in civil cases at the time of the first pleading, on defendants who plead guilty in criminal cases, but would not apply in traffic, conservation and ordinance cases when fines are paid without a court appearance.

There’s no better example of a user fee, Schoenstedt said.

“Some people wince a little bit because it’s a fee and it’s an election year, but this is a classic user fee,” he said. “The only ones who pay this fee are the ones who actually use the courthouse.”

County overflowing with paper court documents

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The need for a new courthouse in Will County goes beyond modern security, more courtrooms and better functionality.

Even in the digital age, there is an issue with having enough space to store piles of paper court records the county is tasked with keeping, said Pam McGuire, circuit clerk for the county.

“We need [space] now,” McGuire said, noting the warehouse on Nicholson Street purchased by the county in 2001 to store documents and voting equipment is filling up fast with the thousands of traffic, civil and criminal cases filed each year.

The county also stores paper records on the second floor of the courthouse, where

McGuire’s office is located, and even in a warehouse in Rantoul.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff with the county executive’s office, pointed to the lack of space during a Monday meeting of the ad hoc courthouse committee.

Palmer said the county is close to “maximizing” its current warehouse space, even though local governments can scan certain documents and maintain them digitally.

With a planning for a new courthouse underway, Palmer on Monday urged Wight & Company, the project’s design team, to also look into the need for additional storage space at an off-site location.

“If we’re looking into court needs, this should be part of those needs,” he said. “If we don’t have space, we’re going to have problems. … We’re

The county uses 15,000 square feet of the warehouse at 806 Nicholson St. for storing paper records, according to a 2009 Will County Facility Needs Assessment. The assessment

shows space needs jumping to 17,000 square feet by 2015.

While it’s unclear just how many stacks of paper line the walls of the warehouse on Nicholson Street, McGuire’s office is required by law to maintain certain paper documents – some of which date back to the 1880s. Court records must be stored and preserved on paper or microfilm, depending on the type or status of the cases.

Records show 42,000 criminal cases were filed in Will County between 1997 and 2013.

McGuire said the majority of those, depending on the status, must be kept a minimum of 60 years.

In the last year alone, 6,100 of the 150,000 cases filed in Will County were categorized as criminal, she said. The remaining were traffic, civil or other misdemeanor cases – all

of which must also be kept for some period of time as required by state law, she said.

To free up space at the warehouse, thousands of financial records have been moved in recent years to the Court Annex Building, 57 N. Ottawa St. Certain traffic cases prior to 1997 have been moved to a storage facility in Rantoul, which the county rents for only $2,400 a year.

McGuire said she’s optimistic as her office and several others move toward electronic filing, while noting the full transition won’t be for some time.

The circuit clerk’s office will be among several that meet with the Wight & Company design team in the upcoming months to go over each department’s space and technology needs at the new courthouse.

Plainfield townhome plan nixed

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The village board voted to turn down a site plan for a 212-unit townhome development Monday.

Trustees said at a regular meeting that the close proximity of the site to the DuPage River makes it prone to flooding.

The 64-acre site is in the narrow strip of land southeast of the Meijer off of Route 59 and 135th Street between the river and water retention basins.

The site itself is surrounded by a flood plain.

“The plan hit a brick wall,” Village Planner Michael Garrigan said. “There is no support for it.”

Garrigan said the board had

extensive concerns about the flood plain, with some trustees citing the lack of basements because the developer, Ryan Homes, were planning to build on cement slabs to mitigate flooding concerns.

“I’ve got concerns about the flooding of the area,” Trustee Margie Bonuchi said. “But even if they mitigated all that, there are so many townhomes being jammed into a small place.”

Bonuchi also said she didn’t like the look of the townhomes, and she felt it was crowded and the streets were too small.

The site called for a density of 3.13 units per acre, larger than medium density but less than high density residential,

according to the comprehensive plan.

The plan also called for private streets because the road width would have been less than village requirements.

Some trustees were concerned about rezoning the land from mixed use to residential.

“We have a comprehensive plan and should stick to it,” Trustee Garrett Peck said. “We shouldn’t rezone just because someone asks us to. It’s something that shouldn’t be done regularly.”

Trustee Bill Lamb, who led the most recent update of the comprehensive plan, said rezoning the site wouldn’t have been an issue. He was the only trustee in favor of the plan.

Man tries to swim away from arrest

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – A boat keeping an eye on Asian carp in the Des Plaines River caught a bigger fish Monday night.

William E. Esters, 26, was pulled from the water after authorities said he dove in to escape police following a highspeed car chase.

At 6:43 p.m. officer Robert Baikie was at Mound Road and Larkin Avenue when Esters drove by in a green Cadillac DeVille. Police Chief Robert Dykstra said the officer could see Esters was not wearing his seatbelt and pulled behind him to make a traffic stop.

Dykstra said Esters pulled into a driveway on Moen Avenue, but threw the vehicle into reverse, nearly ramming the

squad car, and sped off down the village’s main street.

“The Cadillac was passing cars, traveling at over 100 miles per hour [in a 30 mph zone] when it went through the stop sign at Midland Avenue. Baikie stopped the pursuit out of concern of public safety as he was supposed to,” Dykstra said.

But as the officer approached the T-intersection at Brandon Road, several people from the nearby baseball field flagged him down to say a Cadillac had just tried to make a right turn, but “flew” through the stop sign, crashed through the guardrail, went airborne and landed in a ravine below, Dykstra said.

tracked him to a wooded area before he was seen trying to swim across the river.

“There usually aren’t any boats that stay around that area of the river, but a United States Geological Survey boat doing an Asian carp study was right there. Baikie and a deputy got in the boat, while another deputy reported [Esters] was going under,” Dykstra said.

A crew member held a boat pole out to Esters, who was hauled aboard by police and handcuffed, Dykstra said.

Esters was examined by paramedics and booked into the Will County jail on a charge of aggravated fleeing from police.

Jail records indicate Esters was wanted on outstanding warrants for driving with a suspended license and other traffic violations.

Maintenance planned for Dellwood Park dam

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – More improvements are scheduled for Dellwood Park’s aging dam area in Lockport.

The city’s park officials Monday unanimously approved an estimate of about $19,000 to go toward repairs for the dam. Sue Micklevitz, park district’s executive director, said for the past several years, a contractor was hired by the park district to update a structure that is about more than 100 years old.

“We’re giving a kind of

facelift to it,” she said about the dam project.

The dam has deteriorated over the years. In response, park officials plan to continue renovating the stairs of the dam, as well as the top walls on the north side of the dam. They also plan to remove all loose concrete and patch up areas on the dam. Anchors and rods will be drilled into the existing concrete, as well, she said.

Little by little, the dam will become more presentable, said Jeff Rigoni, board president.

“It needs some renovation because the concrete is about

100 years old,” he said.

Dellwood Park itself was built in the early 1900s by the Chicago & Joliet Electric Railway Company and was considered “one of the finest amusement, recreational and picnic areas in the region,” according to the Lockport Area Genealogical and Historical Society’s website.

Micklevitz said the dam was constructed by a private corporation more than 100 years ago. When the dam was not functioning properly because water was leaking, a hole was cut to let the water pass through, Rigoni said.

Clubhouse irrigation fixes Board members unanimously approved a proposal Monday to fix the clubhouse irrigation system at the Prairie Bluff Golf Course.

When park officials expanded the 237-acre Prairie Bluff Golf Course expansion last year, the clubhouse irrigation system was torn up in the process, Micklevitz said.

The 10,000 square foot clubhouse includes a pro shop, banquet hall and bar, according to the Prairie Bluff Golf Course website.

During the expansion, the kitchen, restaurant and bar

were all renovated, Micklevitz said.

New playground equipment Board members also agreed to buy playground equipment for a roughly 14-year-old playground in the Milne-Kelvin Grove School District 91 area. Micklevitz said when playground equipment ages that much, it starts to need improvements.

“What you run into is that pieces get broken,” she said.

Equipment for the park will include swings and signs, she said.

The school board called in officials to explain the proposition more clearly. A key question about the deal’s financial aspects concerned the property taxes in excess of what will be used for the project.

“Recapture revenues will only be used to bring down the overall debt service obligation,” Channahon Development Director Mike McMahon answered in writing.

When there is a deficit in the specially created village fund, McMahon added, the village will make the bond payments with its general revenue dollars and will be reimbursed when the fund regains a positive balance.

School board members debated if the deal would be worth it in the end for the school district.

“We’re giving you an opportunity to increase your taxes,” Jeff Smith said of IDI, “to recoup tax dollars that don’t exist today.”

In 2013, $809 in property taxes was paid on the property to District 17. School board member Derek Breen said he had a problem with the fact that the school district’s taxpayers would be paying property taxes to the school district, but for the next few years, in reality, those dollars would be going to fund property improvement.

The district’s lawyer replied that the dollars were being used as an economic development tool. In the end, the board approved the concept. IDI and the village of Channahon will be taking the abatement proposal to other local taxing bodies next.

CHANNAHON – It wasn’t an easy pill to swallow, but members of the Channahon District 17 School Board this week approved the concept of a 15-year property tax abatement for a logistics and industrial center.

The center is planned for 118 acres on the northeast area of the Interstate 55, Bluff Road intersection. Final approval is still needed by the board.

Many school board members struggled with the longevity of the deal. Industrial Developments International, IDI, would build a 2-millionsquare-foot center composed of four buildings. The development would take place over 10 years.

The property does not have sewer and water, or proper roadways and interstate access. IDI and Channahon worked out a deal for the village to issue $4.4 million in 15-year general obligation bonds to fund those improvements. With interest, the project will cost $5.5 million.

The property tax abatement would refund a portion of IDI’s property taxes back to the village to service the debt on the bonds.

The abatement on the first building would be 100 percent in the first year and 50 percent for the following nine years. There would be 100 percent abatement on the first year for the other three buildings and a 50 percent abatement the following four years.

The first building would come online in 2016; the second in 2020; the third in 2023;

CHANNAHON – The village of Channahon is working to fill numerous personnel positions that opened recently, while the number of candidates for the village administrator position has narrowed to three.

The Village Board voted Monday to hire a new chief building official to replace Dave Cavanaugh, who retires Friday after 11 years in the position. Stephen Kuczkowski, currently senior building commissioner for Crest Hill, will assume the position at a beginning salary of $80,000.

Channahon resident Ricky Gray was approved as a new planning and zoning commissioner. Gray has lived in Channahon for 15 years, is a retired Local 705 member, a Realtor and a member of the Channahon Economic Development Committee.

Trustees also created a new position and filled it. Nicole Norris will begin as marketing and data coordinator at a wage of $17 per hour in the 20-hour-a-week position.

She will be responsible for marketing and information technology tasks, Freedom of

Information Act requests, and assisting on collective bargaining agreements. Trustee Scott McMillin voted against the measure.

The search to replace two senior staff members is ongoing, Trustee Sam Greco said.

Interviews have been concluded to replace Village Administrator Joe Pena, who retired last month, and the three final candidates will be brought before the board for consideration. Interviews will begin this week to find a replacement for finance director Bob Guess, who retires in June.

In other business, the Village Board took action on some building projects.

An amended site plan was approved for Channahon United Methodist Church, which plans on adding a 5,850-square-foot fellowship hall to its existing building on 24751 W. Eames St. The hall was designed at the same time as the main building, but was put on hold because of budget considerations.

Community development director Mike McMahon said members plan on using the hall for youth activities, a thrift shop and special events.

Phipps called 911 while Brandon ran to where Shepard had landed. Realizing immediately she was already dead, Phipps returned to help Mayfield, who had been knocked unconscious, get out through the windshield.

“He started freaking out

He pulled [the unconscious Cardosi] from the passenger seat as frantically as he could and tried to give her mouth to mouth [resuscitation],” Phipps testified.

JOLIET – Opening arguments and testimony Tuesday focused on whether Velar Mayfield drove off the road in a 2011 accident that killed two passengers because of slushy conditions or the marijuana that prosecutors say was detected after the crash.

Neither Mayfield, who was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, or his two passengers who died in the Crete Township crash three years ago, were wearing seatbelts, according to trial testimony Tuesday.

Sarah C. Shepard, 21, was ejected from the backseat of the green Dodge Stratus when it hit a tree in the 3000 block of East Bemes Road and landed about 200 feet away, Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Blouin testified.

Mayfield, 26, who was Shepard’s close friend, is charged with allegedly having marijuana in his system at the time of the March 6 crash. Mayfield’s girlfriend, Cheyenne Cardosi, 21, was riding in the passenger seat and died later that day at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Dyer, Indiana.

blood or urine tests to Blouin while he was being treated that afternoon at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, the deputy testified. But Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Dan Walsh said hospital samples were analyzed by the crime lab and confirmed there was marijuana in Mayfield’s system.

“We don’t have to prove he was high or impaired. We have to show he was driving, there were deaths ... from an accident and he had [cannabis] in his system,” Walsh told jurors during opening arguments.

Defense attorney Cosmo Tedone said the accident occurred because there was snow and slush on the “winding country road” that could not be seen as vehicles came over the hill on Bemes Road.

Blouin and Brandon Phipps, who was riding in the car behind Mayfield’s Stratus, agreed in separate testimony the rural road was slick with slush.

Phipps and his cousin, Michael Phipps, had been driving around for about a half-hour before getting onto Bemes Road where Mayfield passed them.

“We were going the 45 miles per hour speed limit when the Plymouth [sic]

came back into the [eastbound] lane up the hill. He must’ve hit some ice or slush as he spun out and wrapped around the tree,” Phipps said.

The cousins, who did not know anyone in the Stratus, stopped their car. Michael

A: Legally, an individual has no automatic authority to make health or financial decisions for another in the event of disability. Even a spouse or other family member has no automatic rights to make these decisions.

Therefore, planning for disability can be as important as planning for the disposition of property at death. Statutory Powers of Attorney are vehicles created under Illinois law which permit you to nominate an Agent to make health care (Statutory Power of Attorney for Health Care) and property (Statutory Power of Attorney for Property) decisions for you in the event you become disabled. Designating an appropriate Agent (as well as Successor Agents), as well as stating the time want the power of attorney to come into effect (immediately or only in the event of incapacity) are key questions when considering a Statutory Power of Attorney. Once implemented, a Statutory Power of Attorney can avoid the need for implementing a formal guardianship, oft-times a costly and embarrassing process for the disabled person and his/her family.

Illinois recently amended the Statutory Short Form Powers of Attorney for Health Care and Property, effective July 1, 2011, so now is an appropriate time to have Powers of Attorney prepared or updated. Thoughtful planning can prevent family pain and discord in the event of disability.

Extreme care should be taken in designating your Agent (especially if not your spouse), in selecting the powers you want to grant (many powers are elective), and in choosing when you wish the Power of Attorney to be triggered (whether immediately or only in the event of incapacity). Disability planning is integral to developing any estate plan, but you should not sign a Power of Attorney without discussing the advantages, disadvantages, and dangers of a Power of Attorney with a qualified estate planning attorney.

The “garden/backyard” scam goes like this: A middle-aged woman appears in your backyard. You go out to find out why she’s in your backyard. She engages you in conversation about what a lovely day this is and how beautiful your garden is. She asks you to show her around and explain what plants are what.

While you take her around the yard, her accomplice enters your now unlocked back door; heads straight for the master bedroom; opens the top drawer of your dresser; and takes the three jewelry boxes in the top drawer.

While you complete the tour of your plantings, your visitor’s accomplice runs to a car parked nearby but out of your sight. When your garden walk ends, your complimentary new “friend” briskly continues her walk never to be seen again.

Later, when you go to the bedroom you notice some pictures on the dresser have been moved, and upon looking, you find that your jewelry boxes are missing. You have just been robbed. Several lessons to be learned here: Don’t give an around-the-house/ garden tour to a total stranger… unless you lock your doors; and don’t keep your valuable jewelry in the “usual place,” where burglars will probably look.

A variation of this scam was recently reported in the Herald News.

A strange woman appeared in a homeowner’s backyard and when questioned why she was there, she responded that she was looking for her lost cat, Whiskers. The stranger engaged the lady of the house in extended conversation in which the stranger elicited the lady’s schedule for the day. While the lady was at the Jewel, someone broke into her house through a screened in window on her back porch. When she came home her jewelry was gone.

The lesson here is: Do not tell a total stranger when you are going to be gone from your home.

These con-artists do not look or

dress like con-artists. They usually dress and look like people who live in your neighborhood. That is why these con-artists are successful.

They look and act like people whom you would normally trust. In this day and age my advice is: Beware first and trust later.

Just to remind you that you can always get a copy of the deed to your home or other real estate for a small fee of $1.00 per page, and most deeds are only two pages!

Karen A. Stukel, our Will County Recorder of Deeds, will even give them free if you are a senior citizen.

Apparently, there are “scare” letters being sent by unscrupulous companies primarily to senior homeowners telling them if they do not have a certified copy of their deed in their personal possession it could cause them a lot of problems.

To correct this situation these companies, for a fee of “only” $75.00, will “research” and mail the senior homeowner a copy of his deed.

Don’t be fooled. Just remember that your deed is always on permanent file with the Will County Recorder of Deeds and will never be “lost.”

Another scam is the “roving repairmen.” It goes like this: They ring your doorbell after they have given your chimney a free “examination” without your permission and tell you that you have cracks in the chimney that need immediate repair. Don’t fall for this one! What they have probably done is put their ladder up against your chimney and given it a good shove. What they have done is trespassed on your property and caused damage to your home. If you can, without danger to yourself, get their license plate number and call the police. If you haven’t called the repairmen, don’t let anyone “fix” anything in or on your home.

Q. Can you make a workers’ compensation claim for psychological injuries?

Yes, but with reservations. There is a case which occurred in the Supreme Court many years ago, called Pathfinder, where a lady was working on a machine and a human hand popped out. Needless to say, there was a significant shock which resulted in her having a psychological condition. The law has since evolved to allow three types of psychological claims: 1) Physical/Mental, 2) Mental/Physical and 3) Mental/Mental.

So while psychological injuries are allowed to be claimed, the Arbitrators and Commissioners try to review them with great scrutiny, as the injuries are not tangible. Frequently the claims are either denied or the awards are low.

The second type, Mental/Physical is harder to prove. There was an Appellate case where a shop teacher was required to build a house with his students every year. His administrators made unreasonable performance demands on him, to extent he got a bleeding ulcer. Thus the “accident” was mental, yet the results were the physical, specifically a bleeding ulcer. This is what is called, as stated above, a “Mental/Physical” claim. Typical office or company problems, such as the boss yelling at employees, or production demands and the like, are generally not considered accidents and not recoverable. In this case, however, because the expectations and demands from the employer were unusual and unreasonable, recovery was allowed.

The third type of claim is the absolute hardest to prove, which is the example I first gave of the lady who was surprised by the human hand coming out of a machine, again called Mental/Mental. The usual work place stresses are not sufficient for these types of claims, and recoveries are generally poor although clearly allowed by the law. Recovery in a Mental/Mental will only be an allowed, in my opinion, where there is a significant resulting mental illness or disease. As with every other potential workers’ compensation claim, in the event one believes he has a workers’ compensation claim for a psychological injury, a lawyer should be consulted immediately, and immediate treatment should be sought with appropriate professionals and accurate histories.

Q. I went in for surgery on my right knee. They said I’d heal in 8-10 weeks. It’s been over 2 months and the knee is still swollen and painful. Can I sue the doctor for malpractice?

A. Under those facts, probably not. Malpractice requires that the doctor did something or failed to do something that is a deviation of the standard of care. If the doctor performed the surgery within the standard of care and you are just recovering slowly, there is no malpractice. Even if you ended up with an infection and that slowed your progress, there is no malpractice unless there was a breach of that standard of care. The same applies if you do not heal to the point you expected. Without a deviation from the standard of care, there is no malpractice.

So why is there a complaint that there are too many medical malpractice cases? Frankly, I’m at a loss. In order to file a complaint for Malpractice, an attorney has to have a deviation from the standard of care and an affidavit from a medical professional in the same field of medicine supporting that claim. Additionally, since malpractice cases are costly due, in part, to the need for experts, the damages must be significant. In other words, even if there has been malpractice, it may not be financially worth pursuing if the end result was good.

Based on the standard that must be met and the cost of litigation, it is not common practice to file a medical malpractice case without extensive review of the medical records and reliance upon an expert in the same area of practice. The complaints about the number of ‘frivolous medical lawsuits’ filed completely ignore this reality. Most potential medical malpractice cases never meet the criteria for filing. Unfortunately, the insurance companies have a great deal more money than the individual and therefore they can spend the money to taint the public’s perceptions.

Even with the above, if you believe that you or a loved one is the victim of medical malpractice, you should seek a reputable attorney to review the records to explore the possibility. Only after a records review can a fruitful discussion take place. Therefore, whenever possible, the person or family should gather the records before seeing an attorney to discuss any potential lawsuit. Once the records have been reviewed, a reputable attorney will explain both the pro’s and con’s of any potential lawsuit so an informed decision can be made.

Attempted robbery with machete gets man four years in prison

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man who tried to rob a Steger gas station with a machete last year has been sentenced to four years in prison.

William R. Whitson, 27, of University Park pleaded guilty in January to attempted armed robbery before Judge Robert Livas. In exchange for Whitson’s plea, prosecutors agreed he would serve no more than five years behind bars.

Whitson claimed to have substance abuse issues and sought probation, which Livas denied Monday during a sentencing hearing.

Whitson’s “history of alcohol and pill abuse doesn’t mean he has any mental issue. He may just enjoy the sensation [of getting high],”

Livas said.

Around 9:45 p.m. June 9, the 6-foot-6-inch tall, 300 pound Whitson walked into Marathon Gas Station, 3400 Union Avenue, and asked for cigarettes and cash from a clerk.

“I don’t think anyone would refuse his ‘request’ ... since he was armed with a machete, but the victim had the sense to act as she did,” Livas said.

Steger Police Chief Greg Rambo said the clerk activated a holdup alarm and told Whitson who fled without taking anything. Police matched a license plate to Whitson’s landlord who said he’d taken a vehicle without permission.

Rambo said Whitson was located later that night at Jimmy’s Gentlemen Club in Chicago Heights with the machete in the car.

OBITUARIES DONALD C. BEESON Donald C. Beeson, age 79, went to the Lord on Saturday, May 10, 2014 with his loving family by his side.

Donald is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Beverly (nee King) Beeson; his daughters, Tammie Harmison, Toni Beeson, and Lori Ricketts; brother, Gerald (Patricia) Beeson; grandchildren, Brandon (Tonya) Harmison and Anthony Young; greatgrandchildren, Dominic Mills and Margie Elyse Clow; extended, the Andrade, Donnelly, King, and Wagner families.

Preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Lillian (nee Augspurger) Beeson.

Donald retired as a conductor after 39 years of service, working for the GM&O, Illinois Central and Metra Rail Corporation. Don met his beloved wife Bev on the train and married her in 1994, later moved to Spring Hill, FL. He was a proud United States Army Veteran. Don loved cars, his boat and most importantly his family. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Sturgill Hospice Care Center for the comfort provided to Don. A celebration of Donald's life will begin on Thursday, May 22, 2014 with a visitation at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet, IL from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A service will be held in the funeral home chapel during the visitation at 7:00 p.m. Celebrant Ken Plese officiating.

Parade of GM recalls rolls on; 2.4M more vehicles

By DEE–ANN DURBIN The Associated Press DETROIT – Another day, another recall from General Motors.

At least that’s the way it seems as the automaker reviews safety issues across its line-up of cars and trucks in the wake of a mishandled recall of millions of older small cars.

The number of recalls issued this year by the nation’s top carmaker rose Tuesday to 29 as GM announced four separate actions affecting 2.4 million cars and trucks. While no fatalities were involved in the latest recalls, the problems were serious enough that GM has temporarily halted sales of the vehicles.

GM has recalled 13.6 million vehicles in the U.S. since early February. That’s more than the total number of cars it sold here in the past five years, and already surpasses GM’s previous U.S. recall record of 10.75 million vehicles, set in 2004. By comparison,

rival Ford has recalled 1.2 million vehicles in the U.S. this year, while Toyota has recalled 2.9 million, according to federal data and the companies.

The parade of bad news is part of the fallout from GM’s recall of 2.6 million Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars for defective ignition switches – and a consequence of government regulation. GM says it’s redoubling efforts to resolve outstanding safety issues. It’s hiring 35 new safety investigators and is issuing recalls one by one, as soon as a decision is made. GM can’t wait and announce a group of recalls once a month; it’s required by federal law to report defects to the government within five days of discovering them.

A failure to follow that law landed GM in hot water with the government. The company agreed last week to pay a $35 million federal fine for concealing a deadly defect in the ignition switches for more than a decade. GM says

at least 13 people have died in crashes linked to the problem, although trial lawyers suing the company say the death toll is at least 53. Congress and the Justice Department have ongoing investigations.

More recalls are likely.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said the company is making progress on reviewing older investigations, “but work is continuing.”

The recalls haven’t yet impacted GM’s U.S. sales, which were up 7 percent in April.

But Akshay Anand, an industry analyst with Kelley Blue Book, said Tuesday’s order to dealers to stop selling the 2015 Cadillac Escalade and 2014 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia until they’re repaired could give more buyers pause. The initial recalls covered older models like the discontinued Cobalt; now they’re affecting newer models.

Detroit-based GM said it will take a $400 million charge for repairs on all vehicles recalled so far this quarter.

LANSING, Mich. – Americans for Prosperity, the conservative advocacy group supported by the Koch brothers, has launched an effort to torpedo a proposed settlement in the Detroit bankruptcy case, potentially complicating chances for completing the deal just as its prospects seemed to be improving.

The organization, formed to fight big government and spending, is contacting 90,000 conservatives in Michigan and encouraging them to rally against a plan to provide $195 million in state money to help settle Detroit pension holders’ claims in the case, a key element of the deal.

Using public money for Detroit’s case “is very toxic, especially to out-state and Republican, conservative-leaning individuals,” said Scott Hagerstrom, director of the Americans for Prosperity’s chapter in the state.

The group’s move is a blow to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, who proposed the state cash as a final ingredient to bring the 10-month-long bankruptcy case to a conclusion. Some creditors are fighting the “grand bargain,” but it recently drew support from major retiree groups and unions. The bankruptcy court trial on the city’s case will be held this summer.

Target faces identity crisis NEW YORK – Target is having an identity crisis.

The nation’s third-largest retailer was once high-flying, but now it’s struggling to find its place in the minds of American shoppers.

Once known for its cheap chic fashions and home accessories, Target faces competition from trendy chains such as H&M. The discounter also hasn’t been able to ditch the image that its prices on staples like milk are higher than rivals like Wal-Mart. And it’s battling the fallout from a massive data breach that has hurt its reputation.

Meanwhile, Target on Tuesday fired the president of its Canadian operations following some missteps in that country. The ousting comes two weeks after the Minneapolis-based discounter announced it was looking for a new leader after the abrupt departure of its CEO. All of Target’s challenges come as the broader retail industry is dealing with a slow economic recovery that hasn’t benefited all Americans equally and a move by shoppers away from buying in stores and toward shopping online.

As a result, Target reported its first annual profit decline in its latest fiscal year in five years.

Target’s first-quarter results, which are slated to be released Wednesday, will offer more insight. And its shares have fallen 10.5 percent this year.

Hard Rock: Interested in Revel if price is right ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The president of the Seminole Indians’ Hard Rock franchise says the company would consider buying Atlantic City’s Revel Casino if the price were right.

Revel, Atlantic City’s newest casino, is seeking a buyer or a partner for a joint venture.

Florida-based Hard Rock has been a long-rumored suitor for Revel and made preliminary inquiries earlier this year to New Jersey casino regulators about what license it would need if it pursued Revel.

Hard Rock president James Allen, speaking Tuesday at the East Coast Gaming Congress, confirmed the company has kicked the tires at Revel.

“We certainly looked at it,” he said. “We participated in the process. The question is not whether Revel will be operating.

The question is what will you have to put into a property that’s negative” in terms of earnings.

The company’s filings with the state indicate it planned to seek a statement of compliance.

Illinois lawmaker asking judge to postpone trial

CHICAGO – An Illinois lawmaker set to face trial on federal bribery charges is asking to postpone the proceeding so he can finish out the legislative session.

Rep. Derrick Smith is a Chicago Democrat who was charged in 2012 with accepting a $7,000 bribe from someone seeking a state grant.

Smith is set to go to trial May 28 in Chicago. The Legislature isn’t scheduled to adjourn until May 31.

In a court filing, Smith’s attorney asks a judge to postpone the trial until June 2. He said there are “significant” pieces of legislation to be voted on between May 28 and 31.

The judge could rule Wednesday.

House Speaker Michael Madigan said Smith supports making Illinois’ temporary income tax hike permanent. That measure is still short of votes needed for approval.

Man on trial in 1989 southwestern Illinois killing

BELLEVILLE – A southwestern Illinois trial is underway for a man accused in a decades-old killing of a teenager.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports testimony began Tuesday in the proceedings involving 52-year-old Carlos Garrett.

A prosecutor told a St. Clair County jury that genetic evidence links Garrett to the 1989 death of 16-year-old Cahokia High School junior Nicole Willis. Her half-naked, beaten and strangled body was found in a field near her home.

Illinois growers edge closer to end of spring planting

Illinois Tollway changes website for unpaid toll fees

DOWNERS GROVE – The agency that oversees the Chicago area’s toll road system has launched an online feature to make it easier

for people to pay unpaid tolls.

The Illinois Tollway on Monday announced it has changed the online payment method so it’s easier for drivers new to the Chicago area. Features include an interactive map to help drivers track routes and calculate the amount due. They can also pay online.

Drivers have a seven-day grace period to pay tolls. According to the agency, nearly 100,000 drivers pay unpaid fees each month.

Those using the grace period have increased from 2 percent in 2008 to 17 percent in 2013.

Kristi Lafleur is the Illinois Tollway executive director. She said the new process will help drivers avoid paying a toll violation penalty.

NATION BRIEFS $12 billion-plus water bill approved by House WASHINGTON – The House passed the closest thing so far this year to an infrastructure bill – a $12 billion-plus bipartisan measure authorizing 34 water projects, ranging from flood protection in California and North Dakota to deepening the Port of Savannah and widening a Texas-Louisiana waterway that services the oil industry.

The Water Resources Reform and Development Act passed Tuesday on a 412-4 vote.

Lawmakers shook off criticism from conservative and watchdog groups like Heritage Action and Taxpayers for Common Sense that argued the bill should have done more to rein in wasteful government spending.

The Senate could vote on the bill before the end of the week, sending it to President Barack Obama for his signature. AP sources: Justice Dept. to disclose drone memo WASHINGTON – The Obama administration plans to disclose a secret memo describing its legal justification for using drones to kill U.S. citizens suspected of terrorism overseas.

The Justice Department has decided not to appeal a court order

requiring disclosure of a redacted version of the memo. That’s according to two administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were authorized to discuss the matter by name.

The U.S. used a drone strike in Yemen in September 2011 to kill Anwar Al-Awlaki, an al-Qaida leader born in the U.S. Some critics complained that it was illegal for the U.S. to kill American citizens away from the battlefield without a trial.

First lady promotes arts education at talent show WASHINGTON – Michelle Obama is making a forceful plea about the role of arts in education.

The first lady said arts education isn’t something to be introduced in schools after student test scores go up but is a critical part of achieving higher test scores in the first place.

She commented Tuesday as the first White House talent show got underway. The student performers came from schools that participate in a program that uses arts education to help improve student outcomes.

The first lady announced that the program is being expanded from eight to 35 schools nationwide.

President Barack Obama broke away from the Oval Office and came to the East Room to make his own pitch for arts education.

PHILADELPHIA – Pennsylvania’s ban on gay marriage was overturned by a federal judge Tuesday in a decision that legalized same-sex unions throughout the Northeast and sent couples racing to pick up licenses.

U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III called the plaintiffs courageous for challenging the constitutionality of the ban passed by lawmakers in 1996.

“We are a better people than what these laws represent, and it is time to discard them into the ash heap of history,” the judge wrote.

The judge declined to put his ruling on hold for a possible appeal by Republican Gov. Tom Corbett, so it went into immediate effect. The governor, who opposes gay marriage, did not issue a statement or indicate whether he would appeal. However, his state party chairman complained that an “activist” judge had usurped the power

of the Legislature.

Amid a frenzy of celebration across the state, county offices in Philadelphia stayed open late to handle marriage applications, while officials in Pittsburgh were closed for election day but accepting them online. Couples must wait three days before getting married, unless a sympathetic judge grants a waiver.

The judge also ordered Pennsylvania to recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere.

Vic Walczak, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania, which pursued the case, said of the ruling: “It’s everything we had hoped for.”

“There’s nothing that the government can do that’s more intrusive than standing in the way of two people who love each other and want to get married,” Walczak said.

State marriage bans have been falling around the country since the U.S. Supreme Court last year struck down part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. If Tuesday’s de-

cision stands, Pennsylvania would become the 19th state to legalize gay marriage and 43 percent of Americans would live in a state with full marriage equality, according to the advocacy group Freedom to Marry.

The ACLU had argued that the bans deprive same-sex couples and their families of the legal protections, tax benefits and social statuses afforded to married couples.

Corbett’s office was left to defend the law after Democratic Attorney General Kathleen Kane refused to do so. A spokesman for Corbett’s office said it was reviewing the legal issues presented in the opinion.

The Pennsylvania lawsuit, filed July 9, was the first known challenge to the ban.

At least five later test cases emerged, including one over a suburban county’s decision last year to issue 174 marriage licenses to same-sex couples, before a court shut them down. Officials in Montgomery County were trying Tuesday to have that order lifted.

U.S. hacking victims fell prey to mundane ruses

The hacking techniques the U.S. government says China used against American companies turned out to be disappointingly mundane, tricking employees into opening email attachments or clicking on innocent-looking website links.

The scariest part might be how successfully the ruses worked. With a mouse click or two, employees at big-name American makers of nuclear and solar technology gave away the keys to their computer networks.

In a 31-count indictment announced Monday the Justice Department said five Chinese military officials operating under hacker aliases such as “Ugly Gorilla,” “KandyGoo” and “Jack Sun” stole confidential business information,

sensitive trade secrets and internal communications for competitive advantage. The U.S. identified the alleged victims as Alcoa World Alumina, Westinghouse, Allegheny Technologies, U.S. Steel, United Steelworkers Union and SolarWorld.

China denied it all Tuesday.

“The Chinese government and Chinese military as well as relevant personnel have never engaged and never participated in so-called cybertheft of trade secrets,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in Beijing. “What the United States should do now is withdraw its indictment.”

That’s unlikely. What the Justice Department is doing is spelling out exactly how it says China pulled it off.

In some cases, the government said, the hackers used “spear-phishing” – a wellknown scam to trick specific companies or employees into infecting their own computers.

The hackers are said to have created a fake email account under the misspelled name of a then-Alcoa director and fooled an employee into opening an email attachment called “agenda.zip,” billed as the agenda to a 2008 shareholders’ meeting. It exposed the company’s network. At another time, a hacker allegedly emailed company employees with a link to what appeared to be a report about industry observations, but the link instead installed malicious software that created a back door into the company’s network.

“We are so used to solving problems by clicking an email link, looking at the information and forwarding it on,” said Chris Wysopal, a computer security expert and chief technology officer of the software-security firm Veracode. “And if hackers know about you and your company, they can create really realistic-looking messages.”

Marine to get medal of honor for blocking grenade

By LOLITA C. BALDOR The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Cpl. Kyle Carpenter remembers lying on his back on a rooftop in Marjah, Afghanistan, crammed up against sandbags alongside his friend and fellow Marine, Lance Cpl. Nicholas Eufrazio.

It was Nov. 21, 2010, and his squad was Cpl. Kyle trying to push Carpenter south into Taliban strongholds, working to set up patrol bases and establish a stronger U.S. Marine presence in the volatile region.

He doesn’t recall the attack. He doesn’t remember throwing himself in front of Eufrazio to protect him from a grenade, an act that will make him the eighth living recipient of the Medal of Honor for service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But the few seconds between the blast and uncon-

sciousness are clear.

The impact felt like his face and body had been hit with a two-by-four, he said, his vision was blurry and there was a loud ringing in his ears. The blood felt like warm water flowing over his face, and as he ran his tongue around his mouth, he couldn’t feel his jaw.

“I remember my buddies yelling at me, it sounded like they were a football field away. I remember them yelling, you know, you’re gonna make it, you’re gonna make it. And I just kept trying to tell them that I was gonna die,” Carpenter said in an interview with a small group of reporters at the Pentagon.

As he drifted off, he said he remembers realizing how devastated his family would be that he died. And then, he said, “I asked for forgiveness ... I wanted to go to heaven.”

The White House announced Monday that Carpenter, 24, will receive the medal of honor June 19. He is the 15th recipient of the medal, which is the military’s highest award.

Click it or ticket in May For many people, buckling up when they get in the car has become routine.

At least, it is when they’re in the front seats.

The Illinois Department of Transportation found in a 2013 observational survey that more than 93 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers were wearing their seatbelts. But more than one in five back-seat passengers were not.

Many people remember the days when the law didn’t require people to wear their seatbelts in a vehicle’s rear seats. But those days are gone, and have been for more than two years.

Since 2012, Illinois law has required all people riding in vehicles to wear seatbelts.

Officials say it’s with good reason: In 2012, back-seat passengers in Illinois accounted for 46 fatalities and more than 5,000 injuries. Out of those 46 fatalities, 30 of them were not wearing their seatbelt, according to a police news release.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, using a lap and shoulder belt reduces the risk of fatal injury by 60 percent for people in a sport-utility vehicle, a van or a pickup, and by 45 percent in a car.

This month, local police will be on the lookout for people who are not wearing their seatbelts, no matter where they’re sitting in a moving vehicle. The initiative, called the Click It or Ticket campaign, includes many police departments across the state. The campaign continues through Memorial Day, one of the biggest summer travel holidays.

In Illinois, not only is wearing a seatbelt mandatory, but a police officer can stop you if she sees you’re not wearing one, and will write you a $25 citation.

Also, all children under 8 years old must have a safety seat, beginning with a rear-facing seat until age 2.

Our state has made great leaps in reducing traffic fatalities, and seatbelt use has been an important part of that.

State isn’t using taxpayer money well SPRINGFIELD – Our cashstrapped state government has found a new use for its fleet of aircraft – flying birds into Illinois.

I kid you not.

State aircraft are flying to Kansas and transporting prairie chickens back to the Land of Lincoln.

And at a time state lawmakers are looking at raising the state income tax, Illinois state employees have been hiking across Kansas trapping these chickens.

Talk about fowl fiscal deeds.

State pilots have flown between Illinois and Kansas not once, not twice but 14 times this year taking prairie chickens to downstate Jasper and Marion counties.

“Illinois is the Prairie State and prairie chickens are an endangered species here, so we thought it would be a good idea to bring them back,” said Scott Simpson, site manager for Prairie Ridge State Natural Area in

The feds are chipping in $337,000 toward the program, and the state will pay $117,000. Some of the cost to state government may be offset by private fundraising done by the Audubon Society, Simpson said.

That puts the total cost of the program at $455,000 for the next three years.

That’s hardly chicken scratch.

At a time when both our federal and state government are running massive deficits, is this really the best use of taxpayer money?

So far this year, the state has relocated 50 roosters and 41 hens. That puts the cost of the program at $1,166 a bird.

And the expenditure already has lawmakers grousing.

“This is an egregious abuse of tax dollars,” said state Rep. Bill Mitchell, R-Forsyth. “I don’t care if the money is coming from a grant or not. It doesn’t seem like a smart way to do business.”

Mitchell Long has been a budget hawk, calling for the elimination of most of the state air fleet, which he said is mostly used to ferry lawmakers and other bigwigs between Chicago and Springfield. In 2013, the state spent $7.3 million operating its aircraft.

It would be much cheaper for lawmakers and others to drive or take a train.

It should be pointed out that this is all happening at a time that basic state services are being cut, state pensions are underfunded by more

And now lawmakers are backpedaling on their promise to let the “temporary” 67 percent income tax hike expire.

In other words, our fiscal chickens are coming home to roost. Despite this, taxpayers are spending nearly half a million dollars to fly prairie chickens here to roost.

We should have known.

Illinois lawmakers received the perfect recipe to simplify the lives of home bakers, but now are changing it and complicating things.

Rep. Charlie Meier, R-Okawville, had the right idea. He wanted to let smalltime bakers like 12-year-old Chloe Stirling, of Troy, sell their goods without government interference.

But no. Now Sen. Donne Trotter, D-Chicago, is adding all sorts of cumbersome rules that do nothing to help the public but make work – and money – for local health departments. Figures. Most of them objected to the bill in its original form.

That’s nothing to crow about.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources spokesman did not return calls seeking comment. But it appears the state is spending the money and the taxpayers are getting the bird.

would have to label their goods with all the ingredients and allergens and warn people in writing that the item was baked in a home kitchen without a health department inspection. The bakers would have to take a class and pay a yet-to-be-determined fee.

It’s an improvement over the current requirement of a commercial kitchen, but it’s still ludicrous. Home bakers can sell their wares at farmers’ markets in Illinois without government getting involved. Why not let bakers do so out of their home without worrying about running afoul of the law?

Trotter said, “I don’t foresee that we’re going to be raiding lemonade stands or

cupcake sales.” He obviously doesn’t understand how government works. That’s exactly what happened to Chloe.

Instead of complicating what should have been a simple bill, lawmakers should put their energy into developing a budget that doesn’t rely on the soon-to-expire temporary tax. They are pretending that the income tax hike will become permanent – even though they don’t have the votes to make it permanent.

No wonder the state is a financial disaster. No wonder people can’t wait to move out of Illinois.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Noteworthy in Tuesday’s opening girls soccer game at the Class 3A Joliet West Regional was how well Tigers junior goalkeeper Sam MacInnes played.

And yet, No. 1 seed Lincoln-Way Central rode three goals from sophomore striker Anita Fournier to a 6-1 victory over No. 4 West on the Tigers’ home turf.

The Knights (12-8-3) advance to Saturday’s 11 a.m. regional final against Joliet Central who defeated Minooka in Tuesday’s second match.

The Tigers (4-16-2) turn in the jerseys with the knowledge they were much more competitive than a year ago and are headed in a positive direction.

Fournier, wearing a wrap on her left hand to protect a broken thumb, nailed a 25yard shot from the left side into the opposite corner of the net to open the scoring with 36:35 left in the first half.

After Paige Proctor scored the first of her two goals by heading in Sarah Ortman’s corner kick, Fournier made it 3-0 when she went over the top of MacInnes on a breakaway from Keygan Balaja with 8:06 left in the half.

“We tried to work through the offside trap they were using and then things started working out,” Central coach Dan Radz said.

“Anita [Fournier] had been playing goalie. When Erin [Doody] came back in the net, we moved Anita up top and she gave us what we needed there. She plays hard, which we try to instill in all our girls. She’s smart and coachable.”

“That was my first one this season,” Fournier said of her hat trick. She declined to pick a favorite goal, saying, “I don’t really pay attention to them. I just keep playing hard. The nice thing for us is not having to put our jerseys away yet.”

Proctor weaved her way through traffic and past MacInnes to score and make it 5-1, and Kyla Grundhofer scored the final goal when MacInnes was injured and on the sidelines.

She caught a knee to the lower midsection in a collision when she moved out to stop a breakaway.

“Sam is phenomenal,” West coach Ashley Veigelt said of her goalkeeper. “She has been my lifesaver all season, and I’m happy to have her another year. The only thing I wish is that she were

“She can play the field, too, which she did when she broke her hand. She’s our goto-girl on penalty kicks, too.”

Although the score may hide it, MacInnes made sever-

al outstanding stops, helping West stay close until Fournier and Proctor took over again.

Central’s Doody was not peppered nearly as much as the Knights’ defense did the

job limiting the Tigers’ opportunities.

Proctor is playing back in the Knights’ alignment but likes to get involved offensively.

“Paige is our player,” Radz said. “We lost something when Sara Petrone went out – she’s in a boot – and Paige helped pick us up. She playing back, but she always wants to go with the ball, like she showed on that goal in the second half.”

Despite the season ending, Veigelt said there are good signs.

“Last year were getting blown out terribly by these same teams,” she said. “This year we did a better job holding them down and getting goals on them. It’s a process. We graduate 11 seniors but we have a good group of freshmen coming in.”

West was without its top defender, Lucia Mascote, for academic reasons.

Game ends with 8 minutes left due to lightning

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With 8 minutes and 6 seconds remaining in Tuesday’s second semifinal girls soccer game at the Class 3A Joliet West Regional, Mother Nature intervened.

At a few minutes after 8 p.m., the threatened storm rolling in from the northwest was about to descend on the Tigers’ home turf, complete with lightning that forced a delay. West athletic director Steve Millsaps followed the standards set by the IHSA, and played the waiting game.

However, when another bolt of lightning appeared in the sky shortly after 9:30 p.m., the match was canceled at that point and it was official.

Joliet Central, the No. 2 seed in the four-team field, was leading No. 3 Minooka, 2-1, thanks to a second-half goal by speedy sophomore forward Lilian Manzo, who was promoted to the varsity for the playoffs.

The victory advances Central (4-12-1) to Saturday’s 1 p.m. regional final against No. 1 seed Lincoln-Way Central.

Minooka finishes 4-9-4.

Manzo scored off a long lead pass from Kathia Arrendo. Minooka sophomore goalkeeper Ally Isrealson got her hand on the ball but not enough to prevent Manzo from coaxing it into the net.

Little did Manzo realize at the time it would be a match-winner.

“I thought we had the momentum until they scored that goal,” Minooka coach Chris Brolley said. “We kept the pressure on, but they have a real good keeper [junior Jolene Butler]. She made a lot of good saves.”

Led by midfielder Marisol Galvan, who scored at the 33:42 mark of the first half to give the Indians a 1-0 lead, Minooka had opportunities. But Butler and co. met the challenge.

“Our girls are doing what they are supposed to do,” Contreras said as he waited out the suspension in play. “I told them to keep fighting, you gotta believe. And right now, they are believing.”

it at 1. The teams battled to a standoff after that, until Manzo broke free.

Contreras noted that despite the Steelmen’s record, most of their losses have been close matches. “We’ve only been blown out a couple of times,” he said.

If Contreras had his druthers, he of course did not mind the final eight minutes being canceled. If they were played?

“What we need to do is play the last eight minutes the way we played the first 72,” he said.

With a twist from Mother Nature, it now becomes a matter of playing that way Saturday against Lincoln-Way Central.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Even though it was trying to wrap up its third straight conference title, the Minooka boys volleyball team also was focused on the rest of its season Tuesday.

As a result, the Indians coaches went with a 6-2 setup instead of their usual 5-1 in their matchup against Plainfield Central with Southwest Prairie Conference title implications at stake.

With Mason Novak stepping in as setter for the first time and Brandon Baranski joining in on the hitting, the strategy shift worked well, as Minooka mixed in a varied attack with good defense and also received a strong performance from its middle blockers.

It resulted in an efficient, 25-19, 25-23, win over the Wild-

cats that gave coach Janel Grzetich’s program their 41st straight SPC win during the past three seasons.

Minooka (24-9, 13-0) hopes to wrap up a third-consecutive unbeaten league season and claim its fifth league title in six years Thursday when it hosts Oswego East.

“We decided that we needed to make a few changes and if we’re going to do that, we need to make those changes now,” Grzetich said. “I was really happy with their confidence level in themselves and taking leadership while stepping into new roles. Defensively our players were moving much more, and our middle blockers did a better job of closing, which was good to see since that was an area where we had been lacking earlier.”

The best the Wildcats (112 SPC) could have hoped for

was a tie in the conference if they won Tuesday, and then beat Plainfield North in their league finale Wednesday.

Instead, Central coach Alex Hurlburt and his squad will now set their focus on the Joliet West Regional, where they’re seeded second in a tough field that includes Joliet Catholic, Joliet West, fourthseed Minooka and Lockport.

“Minooka is a fantastic team that has great height and jumping ability,” Hurlburt said. “This time they threw an offense at us that was a fair bet difference than the one we saw last time, so that kind of caught us off-guard. They executed brilliantly by diversifying their attack so give them all due respect since they played well. They did a great job.”

In the opener, Minooka built up a 13-8 lead and the Wildcats were unable to get

any closer than three points back during the rest of the set.

The finale was a much closer affair and went right down to the wire with Central forcing a late 23-point tie before the Indians got a kill from Mitch Perinar (eight kills, three blocks) and a block from Luke Hermann to wrap things up.

Novak had 12 assists while recording six kills, and Baranski added eight assists and three kills in their new roles.

Justin Toth chipped in with five kills and a block, while Armani Zuniga contributed four digs and three assists.

“Plainfield Central is a tough team and they’re good competitors,” Novak said.

“Winning conference championships is kind of pride thing for our program. We had a talk as a team today about what it really meant for us to practice and play like this. A problem

for us had been closing the middle block and [Tuesday] they really locked down and I was impressed. Some of the missing pieces are starting to come together for us and it’s at a good time.”

One of the keys for Minooka was that it was able to slow down Central’s Tom Poznanski, who had a rare match where he was held to a single-digit kill total.

Gage Wuestenfeld recorded six kills, Noah Randall handed out 24 assists and Gavin Broekema chipped in with 13 digs for the Wildcats.

“Our middles were a force and we closed a lot better [Tuesday],” Toth said. “This was Mason’s first time as a setter and he did really well and I though that our passing was pretty good, too. I like how we get pumped up and never back down and our chemistry is really good.”

Late surge in seventh not enough for Morris to beat Ottawa

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After playing nearly an extra game Monday in a 13-inning win over Sycamore, you could forgive the Morris softball team if it was a little tired heading into Tuesday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover game with Ottawa.

The Redskins struggled with the bats in the early going, and had a sloppy inning defensively in the seventh that helped Ottawa score four runs for an 8-1 lead.

One thing is certain with this team, though. There is never a dull moment. Morris proved that by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 8-5.

“That seems to be the theme for us this year,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “We wait until the last minute. If we hit, we hit, I don’t care when. Still, it would be nice if we could get it going a little earlier once in a while.

That was a tense game, and it lasted 13 innings. But, this late in the season and heading into the postseason, we have to be able to be mentally tight and physically loose. Early in this game, especially at the plate, we seemed very physically tight.”

In the seventh, Ottawa started the inning with two straight singles. After a popup to third, Morris committed errors on balls hit by the next two hitters. Before the inning was over, Ottawa held a seemingly safe 8-1 lead.

“Sometimes, relaxing is an issue for us,” Lowery said.

“We need to realize that you can think too much sometimes. The girls need to just go out there and have fun doing what they love. They need to enjoy it. We can tell them to do it, but they have to do it.”

The Redskins (18-8) certainly enjoyed themselves in the bottom of the seventh. Abby Burns led off with a walk, and Taya Torkelson hit an insidethe-park home run to the right field corner to make it 8-3. After an out, Kellen Bernickus doubled to center, then Maddy Feeney tripled to score her and make it 8-4. A grounder to the pitcher by Kelly Kolotka

scored Feeney to make it 8-5.

Severson, who doubled in the first inning, then hit a popup between the mound and the plate. Three Pirates converged, but the wind played tricks with it and it dropped to the ground. Severson hustled to get to second, but the throw narrowly beat her, ending the game.

Morris, which visits Kaneland on Wednesday, managed just five hits, all for extra bases. Besides Severson’s double in the first and the three extra-base hits in the seventh, Emily Moore doubled in the fourth.

Laurel Harper went the distance for the Redskins, allowing nine hits and striking out four. She didn’t walk a batter.

“I was real happy with Laurel,” Lowery said. “She hit her spots. [Ottawa] put the ball in play and there were some big outs that we didn’t make. But she did a great job. It’s nice to know that we have an option to bring her in and she will hit her spots and not beat herself.”

Brown, Boyter said, “is like a predator on the football field. Four years from now, the coaches at Carthage are going to be saying, ‘How did we ever get this kid to come here?’”

Boyter said Plevell was Mr. Reliable for the Steelmen.

As for Fischer, “he’s what we call a ham-and-egger,” Boyter said. “He’s a guy you can trust.”

“A situation like we were in, it was tough to go hard every day,” Fischer said. “But we saw coach Boyter do it and we said, ‘If he can, we can.’”

Baseball coach Tony Juarez, a football assistant, said when college recruiters come to Central, they aren’t looking at wins and losses.

“It’s grades and character that they want to see,” he said.

Carlson is a pitcher/first baseman for the Steelmen.

From the time he joined

the varsity as a sophomore, Juarez said, he was “the guy who could help us out anywhere we needed him. And the best thing about him is, he is a great teammate.”

The basketball players cited were McGee, Antonio Dyson (Rock Valley CC) and Jonah Coble (St. Joseph’s in Indiana). Assistant coach Brian Koehne filled in for coach Jeff Corcoran, who was out of state fulfilling a basketball commitment.

“Jaylen was a wonderful asset to our program,” Koehne said of McGee. “Even though he battled through injuries, he was always a big part of what we were doing.”

Dyson had been at Central as a freshman and returned from out of state for his senior year. “Anytime you can add an athlete like him to a team that already was good, it makes for a special season,” Koehne said.

Of Coble, Koehne said, “In 15 years of coaching, I have never been around a person who has matured as much as he has.”

The other Steelmen celebrated were soccer player Arnold Hernandez (St. Mary’s of Minnesota) and cross country runner Salvador Lazaro (Lewis).

“Arnold is one of the best I’ve had in 10 years here,” soccer coach Eduardo Contreras said of Hernandez. “He did everything we asked of him.”

Cross country coach Doug Cherry noted that it usually takes 10 years to make a good distance runner. Lazaro has reached that level despite not running until track season his sophomore year. He won the SouthWest Suburban Blue 3,200-meter race last week.

“Lewis coaches love Joliet Central kids,” Cherry said.

“They are going to love Salvador.”

Joliet West softball team captures SWSC Blue championship STAFF REPORTS JOLIET – Joliet West’s softball team edged Carl Sandburg, 4-3, to wrap up the SouthWest Suburban Blue championship Tuesday.

Kiley Robb recorded the win for the Tigers (25-6, 10-1) while Karina Vargas went 2 for 4 and added an RBI and Madi Mulder also drove in a run.

Homewood-Flossmoor 4, Joliet Central 3: Emily Eichholzer went 3 for 4, Brenna Rande drove in two runs and Rosa Gonzalez homered for the Steelmen in the SWSC Blue.

Plainfield Central 10, Romeoville 0: Gretchen Egly and Timi Tooley had three hits for Central. Egly drove in three runs. Brooklyn Daly threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

JOLIET – Not all of them played on teams that enjoyed a high level of success.

But according to Joliet Central athletic director Steve Locke and the coaches in various sports, the 11 senior boys who were cited last Friday at a college signing celebration in the school auditorium are the epitome of Steelmen.

“This is something that started with coach Maloney [Mike Maloney, the former Central head football coach],” football coach Brett Boyter said. “He said we wanted to graduate men of character. I couldn’t be more proud of the character of these guys here [Friday].”

The football players honored were linebacker Diontay Brown, who will continue his career at Carthage, Ben Donahue (Aurora), Jake Plevell

(Aurora), Max Fischer (Concordia in Kenosha, Wis.) and Dan McGee (St. Francis).

Boyter noted that Jaylen McGee, who will play basketball at Illinois Valley Community College, and Troy Carlson, who is headed to the baseball program at Joliet Junior College, also were quality members of the football team.

“This is the most guys we have had going on to college football since the split,” Boyter said.

He said intelligent is the word to describe McGee. “Dan is intelligent, the quarterback of our line,” he said. “He picked things up quickly.”

Boyter used perseverance to describe Donahue.

“Ben came to me after his junior year and wanted to know what he could do to get on the field more and contribute,” Boyter said. “I told him, and he met every expectation.”

Cingrani back from DL; Roark pitching well VIEWS Dick Goss The welcome back was not exactly what he had envisioned. Nonetheless, Tony Cingrani has returned, providing a good starting point as we update what has been happening with our local professional athletes.

The Cincinnati Reds left-handed pitcher from Lincoln-Way Central was reinstated last weekend from the disabled list, a stint necessitated by what was described as a minor shoulder ailment, and allowed home runs to the first two batters he faced in his start Sunday at Philadelphia. Jimmy Rollins and Wil Nieves went back-to-back, and Cingrani wound up allowing four runs in six innings, suffering the loss in an 8-3 Phillies victory.

On the plus side, his velocity was back to normal, and he did strike out seven while walking three. For the season, he is 2-3 with a 3.76 ERA. In 381⁄3 innings, he has allowed 33 hits, including six homers, and 20 walks while striking out 39.

The other area product in a major league starting rotation, Tanner Roark (Wilmington), continues to have a good run with the Washington Nationals. He enters Wednesday night’s start against Cincinnati with a 3-1

record and a 3.65 ERA. He has made eight starts and pitched 491⁄3 innings, allowing 42 hits and 12 walks while striking out 40.

Infielder Dean Anna (Lincoln-Way East) began the season with the Yankees before being sent to their Triple-A affiliate at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 2013 Pacific Coast League batting champion has struggled of late and his hitting .197 (15 for 76) with three doubles, two triples, a home run and 10 RBIs. Outfielder Joe Benson (Joliet Catholic) also has struggled in his stint with Miami’s Double-A affiliate at Jacksonville. He came out of a 1 for 23 skid earlier this week and is hitting .202 (24 for 119) with seven doubles, two homers and nine RBIs. Right-hander Zach Petrick (Morris) is pitching well for Memphis, St. Louis’ Triple-A affiliate. Thanks in no small part to his start at Colorado Springs earlier this week, he is 2-1 with a 3.37 ERA. In 351⁄3 innings, he has allowed 28 hits and 11 walks while striking out 22.

Combined with his excellent short stint in Double A earlier in the season, Petrick is 4-1 overall with a 2.50 ERA in 54 innings. He has struck out 37 and walked 16.

Mike Foltynewicz (Minooka) is toiling at Triple-A Oklahoma City and is 3-3 with a 3.86 ERA. In 10 games, including seven starts, he has worked 42

IHSA defends practices to House committee Tuesday

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@shawmedia.com In what could be the first of three hearings of its kind, Illinois High School Association Executive Director Marty Hickman sat in front of panel of state lawmakers on Tuesday, asked to defend his organization’s practices.

With questions ranging from how much money IHSA administrators make to whether the IHSA’s Board of Directors is racially diverse enough, Tuesday’s hearing in Springfield appears to be just the start of conversations between lawmakers and the state’s high school sports governing body.

State Rep. Linda Chapa La Via, D-Aurora, said she would like to see at least two more hearings take place – with one likely in Chicago and the other downstate.

While Hickman told committee members he was always happy to meet with the House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee that Chapa La Via chairs, he questioned whether Tuesday’s hearing was entirely necessary.

“I think this could have been done with a simple phone call,” Hickman told the panel.

At the center of Tuesday’s hearing was the issue of the level of transparency the IHSA has shown while managing high school sports for more than 800 schools statewide. Because of its not-for-profit status, the IHSA – which operated last year on a budget of almost $11 million – is not required to divulge where its money comes from or how it is spent beyond the tax form 990.

Chapa La Via has called into question some of the exclusive contracts the IHSA has with vendors and other suppliers, including one for exclusive broadcast rights for state tournament games.

Hickman has said in the past he believes the IHSA is transparent enough, putting links to yearly audits and annual reports on its website.

But Don Craven, an attorney who represents the Illinois Press Association (which the

Northwest Herald is a member of) and Illinois Broadcaster’s Association, said Tuesday that because the IHSA oversees sports and other activities being operated at public schools and receives money from IHSA-sponsored tournaments, it owes the public more information.

Hickman disagrees, saying during the hearing that the IHSA does not receive any direct funding from the state.

That in itself, Craven argues, doesn’t matter.

“They are imposing their policy decisions on public school districts and shouldn’t we see how those policies are made?” Craven said in a phone interview Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s not just the money. It’s also the policies of the organization that are then imposed on the school districts and I think there needs to be some openness in that process as well.”

Both the IPA and IBA have been supporters of Chapa La Via’s House Resolution 895, which led to a 55-51 vote among state representatives in April, approving legislative hearings. Republican lawmakers have argued that legislators should be spending time on more important educational issues and have referred to questioning the IHSA’s practices as a waste of lawmakers’ time.

On Tuesday, IHSA supporters continued to paint the

organization as one that does right by Illinois high school students and athletes while also running with a balanced budget and funding its own pension. In Tuesday’s hearing, Hickman reiterated that the IHSA turned $2.7 million back to schools while the six or seven revenue sports the IHSA oversees pays for the nearly two dozen non-revenue sports – like bowling and bass fishing – that the IHSA offers as a way of providing opportunities for more students.

At least one member of the panel – State Rep. John Cavaletto, R-Salem – was impressed with the way the IHSA conducts its business.

“You spend less than you take in,” Cavaletto said to Hickman during the hearing.

“I wish we could do that here.”

Hickman also took issue with a Chicago Sun-Times report over a weekend that stated IHSA officials received a 21 percent pay increase between the 2011-12 school year and the 2012-13 school year. Hickman, who called the report “100 percent wrong,” told the panel that the IHSA doesn’t have to apologize for what officials in his office make.

The report, however, came directly from Line 15 (salaries, other compensation, employee benefitx) of the organizations’ 2013 tax form 990, which states that the organization paid out $2,541,323 in 2011-12 and then $3,076,721 in 2012-13.

Izzy’s owner hosts meatloaf cook-off to benefit veterans

That’s all Keith Turney of Joliet revealed about his meatloaf entry, as his wife, Carol Turney – winner of a local chili cook-off event earlier this year – quickly admonished him.

“You revealed too much,” she said.

Keith Turney said he hadn’t prepared his Russian Meatloaf in 20 years but – on a whim – entered it in this meatloaf cook-off benefit for disabled and homeless veterans, co-sponsored by two Joliet organizations, Izzy’s bar and American Legion Post 1080.

“I don’t care if I beat anyone else,” Keith Turney said.

“I just want to beat her.”

It was the first cook-off for Izzy’s owner, Alfonso “Izzy” Izquierdo and he raised $4,400, which he presented to American Legion Post 1080 on Tuesday for that organization to disperse.

With his son, Thomas, coming home in June from his service in the U.S. Army, Izquierdo said he finally realized the brave sacrifices servicemen make to uphold American freedoms.

“Unfortunately, some of them give their lives, that’s the bad part,” Izquierdo said.

Assisting Izquierdo was John Albrecht of Joliet, a retired Joliet Police Department sergeant and a district trustee for the Illinois State Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, who chose meatloaf as the fundraising theme for several reasons.

Albrecht said chili isn’t appealing in warm weather; meatloaf is great comfort food; the recipes for meatloaf are as varied as they are for chili; and the Joliet area, to his knowledge, had never hosted a meatloaf cook-off.

“It was unique,” Albrecht said.

More than 75 individuals and businesses absorbed preevent expenses, Izquierdo said, either by donating sides of mashed potatoes, green beans and corn to accompany the meatloaf at serving time, providing raffles items or offering discounts for supplies. Hendrickson made and brought in 12 loaves of homemade bread.

Even before judging com-

menced, Hendrickson, who said she’s “not all that good” at making meatloaf, had her entrée picked out – the one outlined with Spanish olives.

“And I don’t even like olives,” she said.

Ron Shimkus of Shorewood, a Vietnam veteran, had prepared that meatloaf, the first time he’d used pepper and eggplant paste instead of tomato paste. He then wrapped the entire loaf in bacon and garnished it with olives.

“You can’t go wrong with bacon,” Shimkus said.

Shimkus, who calls recipes “guidelines of basic ingredients,” said he won a chili cook-off with an untried recipe and that his best creations come from winging it. By contrast, Geri Shoop of Joliet, worried her signature meatloaf – ground turkey, sweet Italian turkey sausage, “all the colored peppers” and hot tomatoes – would not please the judges.

“It might be too spicy,” Shoop said.

American Legion Post 1080 supplied the judges and

these men represented “all four branches of the service,” Albrecht said. With official scorecards before them, judges carefully tasted each meatloaf sample and recorded their impressions.

Roger Hovorka of Plainfield, who served in the United States Army from 1975 to 1979, focused mostly on taste and consistency.

“I like it meaty,” Hovorka said. “Appearance? They’re all about the same.”

Recorded comments from Marshall Forest of Joliet, included, “burnt on top, not cooked,” “very, very good” and “tastes bland.” This former combat medic for both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps, who served from 1953 to 1962, had his own idea of good meatloaf – venison seasoned with cumin – the way Forest used to make it.

“The texture should be moist, not dry and you’ve got to have the right ingredients.

It can’t be too spicy,” Forest said. He took another bite. “I haven’t found any with cumin yet.”

Jeff Schoneck of Crest Hill, who served in the U.S. Army from 1999 to 2005, picked the best recipe for his first attempt, made especially for the benefit. It’s the recipe his girlfriend – Shelly Millar of Crest Hill – uses for stuffed peppers, which Millar said are “the best in the world.”

“I mix ground beef and Italian sausage and stick a slice of string cheese down the middle,” Millar said. “I also put olive oil on top to make them taste like sweet peppers.”

Winners were Nancy Vallee of Joliet (first prize, $150), Joyce Hernandez of Joliet (second prize, $100) and Keith Turney, ecstatic that his wife did not win ($50, third prize).

Vallee entered because her son, Alexis Sylvestre, 21, is a “wounded warrior.” Hernandez, who used her mother’s recipe, disclosed its winning secret ingredient.

“It’s mushroom-onion soup mix,” Hernandez said.

At the bridge table, usually when the right choice of bid or play is not clear, you have two possibilities. Consider both of them, and with luck it will become apparent, which is preferable.

In this deal, South is in five diamonds. West leads the spade four. How should declarer plan the play?

South might have opened five diamonds, but that would have risked missing a slam.

East’s double of one no-trump was for takeout of diamonds, the opener’s suit. Yes, East might have bid two hearts to get his five-card major into the game, but the double was more flexible.

Then South bid what he hoped he could make. Note that if he had gambled on the majors by rebidding three no-trump, that contract would have made easily.

Declarer has three possible losers: one in each side-suit. He also has only 10 winners: one spade, eight diamonds and one club. He needs a second spade trick. And if West has led away from the king, that trick will materialize immediately. But what happens if East produces the spade king?

Yes, South’s queen is now established, but how can he get to dummy’s spade ace? The answer is to hope that West has the spade jack and to drop the queen under East’s king.

Suppose East shifts to the club king. Declarer wins, draws trumps, and plays his spade three to dummy’s 10. If that finesse loses, the contract was unmakable.

Chelation therapy for heart disease deserves another look Dear Doctor K: I have heart disease, and I keep hearing that chelation therapy can help. It sounds like snake oil to me. What is it, and can it help?

Dear Reader: Ever since I graduated from medical school, I’ve thought, like you, that chelation therapy for heart disease sounded like snake oil. Many of my patients have asked about it, and I’ve told them not to consider it. About a year and a half ago, a reader asked me the same question, and I was pretty negative in my column.

But I’ve learned that a doctor has to be open-minded: If new evidence runs counter to what you’ve believed, you need to consider it seriously. Evidence in the past two years has led me to think there may be something to chelation therapy.

So, what is chelation (pronounced key-LAY-shun) therapy?

Certain chemicals are injected into the blood. These chemicals attach to metals deposited in the tissues of your body, pulling the metals out of the tissue and into the blood. Then the metals get eliminated in your urine.

That may sound a little wacky, but it’s absolutely true. Chelation therapy is a successful treatment for lead poisoning, for example.

But what does it have to do with heart disease?

Heart disease is the No. 1

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff cause of premature death. The most common form of heart disease results from atherosclerosis, in which fatty plaques build up inside artery walls. They block blood flow and increase the risk of a heart attack. These plaques contain calcium.

About 70 years ago, some doctors put forward a new theory, proposing that chelation therapy would pull the calcium out of the plaques and that would somehow ease heart problems. Mind you, there was no serious evidence to support this theory, but hundreds of thousands of people have received chelation therapy anyway.

And the treatment can cause serious adverse reactions, including death. So you can understand why I, along with most doctors, have been skeptical about chelation therapy for heart disease.

What’s been missing is the gold standard for determining if a treatment works: a large, randomized, controlled trial. In the summer of 2013, a trial including more than 1,700 people who underwent chelation therapy was reported. The study participants were over age 50 and had recently had a heart attack, so the point

of the trial was to find out if the people had fewer additional heart problems in the future.

The result was ambiguous: The patients receiving the true chelation therapy had a 4 percent lower risk of heart problems. The result was not dramatic enough to cause the doctors conducting the study to recommend the treatment.

Then another analysis of the results of the same study was published in early 2014. This analysis looked only at the people in the study who also had diabetes.

These results were more dramatic: Heart problems were reduced by 41 percent in the people treated with chelation therapy.

The study authors suggested that another randomized controlled trial be conducted just in people with heart disease and diabetes to verify the result.

So, in my opinion, the value of chelation therapy for heart disease remains to be proved. I used to think it was total baloney, but now I’m open to the idea that it may help some people, and that this possibility should be studied.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 14 and have a 10-yearold brother who is a little monster. He always dresses like a Frankenstein monster at Halloween, and it suits him well. It seems like the only pleasure he gets in life is to pester me and to get me into trouble.

Whenever I’m in my room studying, he interrupts me by coming into my room and starting to sing. Yesterday, I was studying for a test when he came in singing. I asked him to leave and he told me to shut up and then called me a bad name. I grabbed him and threw him out of my room and he bounced off of a wall.

It didn’t hurt him, but he went whining to our mother and she took his side.

Now I’m grounded for a month and it’s like being in jail for a crime I didn’t commit.

Please help me convince my mother that I should get a reduced sentence. – Nameless, Columbus, Ga. Dear Nameless: Your brother might not be a monster, but he surely is a brat. He should have been punished for his uncouth use of the English language, but throwing him against a wall was not the right thing to do, even though his actions provoked you to lose control of your emotions.

Still, a month of grounding does seem a bit harsh. If I were the judge, I would have given you two weeks in which to reflect on your aggressiveness.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 20 and live at home with my parents and two younger sisters. My dad is a great provider for the family and a wonderful father. My mother is a wonderful parent, but she is not a good household

Dear Hannah: It’s time for Mom to learn to function without your constant help doing her errands.

Believe it or not, she and your family will survive.

Make your move, but be sure to stop by and see your family on a regular basis, and if it’s convenient, help Mom do an errand every now and then.

It will take a little adjustment on her part, but Mom will be able to function and take charge of her own life.

When my grandfather tried to rape me, it was at night when everyone was asleep.

I stopped him as much as a 10-year-old could.

The next day he wrote me a letter saying he was sorry for what he did. It read, “If your dad finds out, it will KILL HIM.” Strong words for a 10-year-old, so I buried the letter in the back yard. He never touched me again.

Five years after that, Grandpa was arrested for molesting my younger brothers.

As a young girl, I didn’t know men molested boys. I found out after my grandfather went to prison that he had also molested my dad and his sister when they were children.

Please warn parents to educate their children. Tell them that even someone they love

If it’s not a parent, then tell a teacher, counselor or school nurse, all of whom are mandated reporters. Children should also tell if a friend confides it has happened to him or her, because secrets like this are harmful not only to the victim, but also to any children in the vicinity who might also be at risk.

It may assuage your guilt to know that molesters often blackmail their victim into silence.

I heard recently from a woman who said her father told her when she was a child that if she revealed what he was doing, he would kill himself. (It wasn’t until many years later that she finally realized if he had, he would have been doing everyone, including her sister, a favor.)

‘Ghost Stories’: Pretty pale stuff from Coldplay

By ALLISON STEWART Special to The Washington Post “Ghost Stories” is Coldplay’s first album since lead singer Chris Martin’s separation from Gwyneth Paltrow launched a thousand conscious uncoupling jokes. Some of the best albums in history have been born out of such domestic strife.

But for Coldplay, which has always treated romantic misery as an all-youcan-eat-buffet, an album full of gloomy songs about love gone wrong is in itself unremarkable – the band was making divorce albums before anybody actually got married.

“Ghost Stories” is stripped-down and slippery, a pointed de-escalation from their last album, “Mylo Xyloto.” Both incredibly popular and intensely disliked, “Mylo Xyloto” was outsize and over-produced, a helium balloon of an album that existed in a state of Peak Coldplay.

The band’s basic formula – ringing anthems, earnest-but-vague lyrics – was inflated to the point of absurdity.

In its preference for acoustic ballads instead of stadium-ready electro-pop, “Ghost Stories” is a retrenchment, a conscious return to the relative simplicity of the band’s debut, “Parachutes.”

There’s a great exercise in Technicolor dubstep-like pop courtesy of Avicii (“A Sky Full of Stars”), but everything else feels like a retreat. It’s as if Coldplay has decided they want to be less like U2 in 1991 and more like Coldplay in 2001, as if no time had elapsed, and no real artistic progress had been made, in the years since.

There is less of a sense of puffed-up grandeur than any of the band’s recent outings, but grandeur was something Coldplay did well, if too often. Grandeur can cover a multitude of sins. These spartan songs – elongated, intimate and quiet – lay bare every weakness of melody (Martin used to write superlative ones;he seems to have given up) and songwriting.

Lyrically, “Ghost Stories” is fascinating (in theory, at least) for the same reasons it’s so vicariously depressing. This isn’t Coldplay’s usual conspicuous mopery; this is a public bloodletting: “True Love” is a raw, synth-driven mid-tempo ballad about the disintegration of a relationship, driven by Martin’s spectral falsetto (“Tell me you love me / If you don’t, then lie”). “Ink,” loping and percussive, feels like something Jack Johnson might make if he were British and sad all the time.

Its lyrics read like bad “Twilight” fan fiction (“All I know / Is that I’m lost / In your fire below”).

Martin is as polarizing a figure in his world as Paltrow is in hers, and “Ghost Stories” humanizes them while still managing to be universal in its reach.

Sometimes it does this too much: Martin is a master of lyrical generalities, adept at telegraphing basic emotions – I’m lonely, I’m sad, I’ll meet you in the rain, I’ll fly away like a bird – but unequal to the deep dive a truly classic breakup album requires.

Still, there has never been such a revealing relationship album written by one celebrity we felt as if we knew about another celebrity we also felt as if we knew, even if its revelations may not all be intentional.

This isn’t just an album of garment-rending breakup songs, it’s an album with giddy newfound love songs.

Songs written about someone who clearly isn’t Gwyneth Paltrow, by someone who was married to Gwyneth Paltrow at the time.

So, it’s awkward. “A Sky Full of Stars” (“Cause you get brighter the more it gets dark / I’m gonna give you my heart”), an unofficial sequel to “Yellow,” is as anthemic, and as happy, as things get, which is to say, not very.

“Magic” rides the mildest electro pulse imaginable, but it’s one of the few tracks that feels like it was made by a band.

ably close to resembling a Chris Martin solo album.

With sometime collaborator Brian Eno (he produced the fine “Viva la Vida,” and contributed to the tolerable parts of “Mylo Xyloto”) absent, and guitarist Jonny Buckland unwisely minimized (“Ghost Stories” belongs to its synths, pianos and bass), Martin is left to his own devices.

The result is a great premise chained to an album of modest pleasures, its lyrics too ethereal to carry much charge, its melodies too mild to prop them up.

As a piece of art, “Ghost Stories” is an exercise in frustrated potential. As a historical document of a celebrity divorce as a slow-motion car crash, it’s not much either, but it’s the best we have.
