Joliet takes a look at used-car lots

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City officials are checking more closely on used-car operations.

Joliet City Council members at a workshop meeting Monday criticized a used-car business proposed for 312 Manhattan Road, saying too many cars would go on too small a space.

The city is in the process of revoking the permit of an existing used-car lot at 101 N. Center St., saying the dealer exceeds the 10-car limit allowed on the site.

Meanwhile, one council member asked staff to investigate the number of cars being stored in the back lot at Your Choice Auto at 1506 W. Jefferson St. The City Council on Tues-

day is slated to vote on a special use permit that would allow a used-car business with a maximum of 20 cars at 312 Manhattan Road.

But two council members said the lot is too small for 20 cars, and another questioned whether the city should issue the permit.

“I certainly see that we’re going to have a problem with this,” Councilwoman Bettye Gavin said. “I don’t think this is a conducive site – especially for 20 cars.”

Councilman Jim McFarland also said 20 cars was too many.

Councilwoman Jan Quillman asked several questions about the project, including whether sales had already been conducted there without the permit.

The city approved a spe-

cial use permit for the site in 2011. But the permit lapsed when the business after a certain period when the business was not started.

Since then, however, Juan Carlos Diaz, the petitioner, has stored cars on the site, city officials said.

Jazmin Moreno, acting as a translator for Diaz, said that there is room for 20 cars. She also said part of the church property next door is owned by Diaz.

Betsy Satcher, a member of the neighboring East Side Church of Christ, said the church shares a parking area with the car lot.

“There have been more than 20 cars,” Satcher said.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Prospective churches may soon need to require village approval before opening up in a commercially-zoned district.

Village trustees on Monday directed the board attorney to draft an ordinance that would require prospective churches to go through the special use permit process with the village before settling in a B-1 Neighborhood Commercial or B-3 Business Highway District zoned property.

“There has been some concern about religious assemblies taking up potentially prime commercial development,” Garrigan said, adding that the special use permitting process is primarily geared to make sure churches go through some public review process, not deny them a place to worship.

Examples of those churches outlined in a staff report are the Grace Pointe Church operating out of the Dayfield Retail Center on Route 30 and 143rd Street, and the use of the vacant Paradise Motors Route 30 Plex off Route 30 as a religious as-

sembly.

Church review, protection

As it stands now, churches don’t have to go through any review process before buying or renting a commercial space.

The unanimous 6-0 decision by the board means next month the board will discuss a resolution to officially adopt the change. But trustees urged residents to understand that the vote didn’t mean they were against churches in the village.

“The way I understand it is this is not going to be a motion or a vote for or against religious assembly,” Trustee Edward O’Rourke said. “It’s really just adding a layer of review.”

In a memorandum to the board, village attorney James Harvey cited a 2001 case involving the city of Chicago Heights and a local church, which was denied a special use permit by the city because the religious assembly use of the potential church didn’t conform to a recent comprehensive plan adopted by the city.

The Illinois Supreme Court ruled that the church’s special status as a religious assembly, which grants it greater protec-

tions than other business uses, prevents the city from denying the permit based on use.

The burden was on the city to prove the “grant of the requested special exception use would result in an adverse effect upon adjoining and surrounding properties unique and different from the adverse effect that would otherwise result from the development of such a special exception use located anywhere within this zone.”

That means that even if the special use permit requirement is passed, the village wouldn’t be able to deny a special use permit unless it found some adverse effect on the surrounding properties.

Before the discussion about used-car lots ended, Councilman Michael Turk asked staff to inspect the back area of Your Choice Autos.

“They’ve got a ton of cars there,” Turk said, adding that it appears parts are being taken off of the cars stored in the back. He said later that neighbors have complained about the appearance of the back area.

The music makers Richland program sees growth, success

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Richland School eighth-grader Emily Padilla is taking five years of singing experience with her as she becomes a freshman at Lockport Township High School next year.

Not many high school freshman choir students can say that.

“It’s become a part of me over the years,” Padilla said of participating in the choir since third grade. “I have become more confident. And it has helped academically too.”

Richland fifth-grader Zoe Halatek wanted to join band because her older brother played an instrument, as well. But she has made the flute her own.

“It makes me feel proud because we have a good band,” she said.

One of the most successful pre-secondary education music programs in the state is right at Richland School District 88A. On May 2, the fifth- and sixth-grade concert band and choir each received a “Best of Day” designation for the region at the 2015 Illinois Elementary School Association State Band and Choir Contest.

Before that, the symphonic band received a “Division I Superior” rating by all judges after performing “Royal Oak,” “Salvation is Created” and “Terminal Velocity” on March 14 at the Illinois Grade School Music Association Band Regional.

The choir also was selected for 2015 “Honor Status” through the IGSMA, designating it as one of six choirs “that demonstrate truly outstanding musicianship at the middle school level,” in the state. Other Richland choirs also accomplished that feat in 2013 and 2014.

Fine arts growth

Richland band teacher Phil Robb and choir teacher Audrie Burk credit the success to the performers.

“It is the students,” Robb said. “It’s a collaborative effort. The teachers here are truly supportive. And the connection we have with area directors and other intervals of support make it a great music program.”

Along with praising the students’ hard work, Burk credits parents for their support. She also said it helps for students to start choir and band at an earlier age.

Richland choirs start in third grade, while band starts in fourth grade. That is earlier than most school districts in Illinois.

“It’s really impressive what the students are able to do at that age,” Burk said.

“Part of the success of the program is the teachers,” Superintendent Michael Early said of Robb and Burk.

Moving the band and choir from after-school programs to part of the regular school day also helped attract more interest, he added.

Rising NASCAR star visits Joliet students

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School were thrilled Monday to see rookie NASCAR driver Daniel Suarez visit their school.

They crowded outside in the school parking lot as the young race car driver walked toward them and waved. They chanted “Daniel! Daniel! Daniel!”

Suarez, 23, visited the school Monday morning to talk to students about professional racing and his journey from Mexico to the U.S. His visit was part of a Joliet Public Schools District 86 initiative to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning.

Chicagoland Speedway coordinated Suarez’s visit to the school Monday. Scott Paddock, Chicagoland Speedway president, announced every student will receive a ticket to watch Suarez race June 20 during the NASCAR Xifinity Series at the Speedway.

Since then, he’s been part of the “NASCAR family” and was named seventh on motorsports.com’s Top 10 brightest NASCAR prospects list.

When asked by one student if he’s been in any accidents,

he said he’s been in a few. But NASCAR has done a good job of keeping drivers safe, even when they’re racing 200 miles per hour, he said.

“That’s a good thing. We can do what we love and be safe at the same time,” he said.

Travon Bell and Kobe Bender were some of the dozens of students who had the chance to meet Suarez, even getting his autograph. Bell said meeting Suarez was cool and he thought there was a “whole lot of people

involved in race cars.”

Bender said Suarez’s visit was awesome.

“My grandfather used to race a lot. … It was a really fun experience to meet a NASCAR driver,” he said.

Murder defendant told cops victim wanted gun for suicide

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Frankfort Township man charged with murdering a woman told detectives the victim asked him for a gun to commit suicide days before her death.

Brian Trainauskas told Will County Sheriff’s detectives that Monica Timar asked him about different ways to end her life.

A video recording of his January 2009 interview was played Monday during Detective Daniel Troike’s testimony at Trainauskas’ bench trial.

Trainauskas, 40, is charged with murder and concealing a homicide. Prosecutors said Trainauskas held a Mossberg shotgun to Timar’s head and killed her in his basement.

Defense attorneys said while Trainauskas allowed Timar to his home to use his computer, he is not responsible for her death.

Before Troike testified, Judge Dave Carlson, overseeing the bench trial, ruled searches of Trainauskas’ computer are admissible evidence, since the defense has been allowed to examine the hard drives for the last six years.

Carlson, however, decided while the dates and times of text messages received by Timar’s phone from Trainauskas’ also are admissible, the content of half-conversations is not.

In January 2009, Trainauskas told Troike he’d been acquainted with Timar through mutual friends, but they’d had a falling out when he got involved in a serious relationship two years earlier. They renewed their friendship at a Christmas party two months before Timar’s death, but were not close, according to the videotaped interview.

“We talked on [Jan. 19 and 20] about her filing for bankruptcy. ... She showed up unannounced at my house,” Trainauskas said. “Then she said ‘I want to die.’ I said, ‘Whoa. We need to talk about that.’ ” Trainauskas told detectives he offered to put Timar in touch with mental health professionals, but told her to leave when she asked for a gun.

“She asked how people [kill themselves]. I was telling her ... [the most] painful ways to dissuade her,” Trainauskas told detectives.

help Timar kill herself, he replied “Absolutely not,” during the recorded interview.

Trainauskas told police most of his guns were stored at someone’s house while he prepared to move to North Dakota, but he did have a .44 Magnum handgun in his house and an AK-47 rifle that needed trigger repair in his car at the time of Timar’s visit.

Trainauskas did not mention a Mossberg shotgun that, according to earlier testimony, he sold to another man the day after Timar’s visit. A technician from the state police crime lab has testified Timar’s blood was found inside the barrel of the Mossberg.

Later in the interview, Trainauskas allegedly gave statements to police that implicated him in Timar’s death, but an appellate court has ruled the statements can only be used if the defendant himself testifies.

Trainauskas also is accused of trying to hire another inmate at the Will County Jail to kill an assistant state’s attorney. This inmate would also allegedly force another person to confess to Timar’s slaying, prosecutors say, and then would subsequently kill that person.

Joliet police: Shots fired outside Mojoes

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police charged two people after shots were fired during a brawl outside a downtown nightspot early Sunday.

At 12:34 a.m., police officers were monitoring a large crowd attending a concert at Mojoes of Joliet, 22 W. Cass St. when a large fight broke out, according to Lt. Kevin LaBolle.

“During the melee, officers heard shots fired and saw a vehicle leave the area at a highrate of speed,” LaBolle said. No injuries were reported.

After a car matching the description was stopped by police near Jackson and Scott streets, officers “backtracked” to find a silver revolver in a dumpster behind a building in the first block of East Cass

Street, LaBolle said.

Darnell L. Parrish, 22, of the 500 block of Fourth Avenue, was arrested on charges of being an armed habitual criminal, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a street gang member and defacing the identifying markings of a firearm.

According to the Department of Corrections, Parrish is on parole for weapons convictions from 2011 and 2013.

A 26-year-old Joliet woman and a 24-year-old Joliet woman who also were in the vehicle also were arrested, but released without charges.

Back at Mojoes, Adia D. Currie, 28, of the 1300 block of Pioneer Road in Crest Hill, was arrested on a charge of mob action for her alleged part

in the melee, police said.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, also the city’s liquor commissioner, said Monday his office is looking into the incident to determine if there were violations of the city’s liquor code.

Just last week, O’Dekirk suspended Mojoes’ liquor license for three days because of an April incident in which the club had more people than the 500 allowed by the city’s fire code. The club also was serving liquor in an area where minors were located, although city officials said there was no evidence minors were served.

The license will be suspended June 14 to 17.

JOLIET – Police have arrested a second suspect in connection with last week’s doughnut shop robbery.

Quinton D. Harris, 20, was identified by witnesses as one of the suspects in the May 12 holdup at HomeCut Donuts, 815 W. Jefferson St., Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said.

Police began searching for Harris shortly after the robbery and located him Friday near the Evergreen Terrace housing project on Broadway.

Ryan A. Banks, 19, also was arrested at Evergreen Terrace shortly after the robbery oc-

curred. At 1:59 a.m., two men came into the doughnut shop and demanded money. One was armed with a handgun, according to Roechner.

No one was injured and police found a suspect vehicle with the cash register drawer Quinton at Evergreen D. Harris Terrace.

Harris, of the 21800 block of Cherry Hill Road, was booked into the Will County jail on a charge of armed robbery and is being held on $250,000 bond.

The diocese wants to subdivide the property into three lots to make them easier to sell, spokesman Ed Flavin said.

“We’re just exploring options so we can sell them individually,” he said Monday.

The subdivision is on Thursday’s agenda for the Joliet Plan Commission. The commission will meet at 4 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St. The 2.5-acre site that housed the diocese chancery office before it was moved to Crest Hill has been for sale since at least October.

Flavin said there have been showings of the property.

“We’re just exploring options so we can sell them individually.”

“But I wouldn’t say we have any buyers at this point,” he added.

He said breaking the property into smaller parcels could “generate more interest.”

The city posted a sign on the property recently notifying neighbors that the matter would be on the Plan Commission’s agenda.

Neighborhood advocate Georgene Williams said she believed the sign went up Friday.

“That’s when I started getting phone calls,” she said.

Williams is among neighbors who have objected to a

diocese proposal initiated last year to house a transition program for ex-convicts in the John Paul II building on the site.

The diocese in January said the plan was on hold in light of neighborhood opposition. Flavin said there are no updates and the plan remains “exploratory.”

The John Paul II building is the only one of the three still being used, Flavin said. It is a residence for priests.

A staff report for the Plan Commission meeting states the diocese wants to break up the 2.5-acre site into three lots.

The report says, “There are no known buyers of interest or future users at this time.”

The report describes the three buildings as: a two-story, 3,774-square-foot brick building; a two-story, 2,125-squarefoot brick building; and a three story, 4,525-square-foot building.

The park district is seeking applicants to replace former commissioner Janet Silosky, who resigned last week, saying she needed to focus on her family business.

Informational packets for interested individuals are available for pickup at the park district’s Recreation/Administration Center, 23729 W. Ottawa St. in Plainfield.

MORRIS – The Grundy County Republican Central Committee on Monday submitted David Valdivia as the Republican Party’s nomination to fill the remaining term of former Republican Alderman Kenneth Sereno, who resigned May 4.

The nomination to fill the Second Ward seat was submitted to Mayor Richard Kopczick, according to a news release from the party.

“I just feel this is a moment that’s meant to be,” Valdivia said Monday afternoon. “It’s a new leadership opportunity and I know I can do it.”

Families who live in HUD-assisted housing receive financial assistance for utility bills, such as electricity and gas. Basic Internet access is not included. Foster said the bill would add broadband Internet as a permitted utility for families with children who qualify for free or reduced school lunches.

This initiative could help HUD’s vision of leveling the playing field for people from “all walks of life,” said Antonio Riley, regional director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

About four out of every 10 U.S. families with an annual income of less than $25,000 have Internet access, Riley said. That compares to nine of 10 families making more than $100,000 a year having Internet access.

“That is a disparity that should not be allowed to exist,” Riley said. “Access to opportunities for the engagement of schools, access to government resources, job applications, college applications, scholarships, financial resources have now

been moved to the digital platform. ... But many who need these valuable resources are most disenfranchised because they are lagging behind in the digital divide.”

A mother of four who lives in public housing, Eva Mulligan said she and her children would benefit from Internet access at home.

“I have four children. Three are in high school. One is in grammar school. Nowadays, you need the Internet for homework. Not Facebook, but homework,” Mulligan said. “It would benefit with homework, with their science projects.”

Families at the mixed-income, single-family homes and duplexes at Liberty Meadows Estates have access to a computer lab at the on-site Community Center. But Michael Simelton, chief executive officer for HAJ, said the lab closes daily at 4:30 p.m.

LOCAL BRIEFS Crash leaves one in critical condition

ROMEOVILLE – One person was left in critical condition after a Monday afternoon crash on Weber Road and Grand Boulevard involving a motorcycle and passenger car, according to Lockport Township fire and Romeoville police officials.

At about 1:52 p.m., an 82-yearold Plainfield woman who was driving a Saturn collided with a motorcycle driven by a 58-yearold Romeoville woman, according to a Romeoville Police Department news release.

The crash caused Weber Road to shut down in both directions for several hours. The road was reopened at around 5:15 p.m., according to Romeoville police.

The two victims were transported by ambulance to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, one in critical condition, Lockport Township Fire Battalion Chief Frank Blaskey said.

Romeoville Police still were investigating the crash as of 4:45 p.m. Monday, according to the

news release.

Police: Braidwood man stopped with heroin

BRAIDWOOD – Police say a man who provided officers with a phony name Saturday night was carrying heroin.

Braidwood Police Chief Nick Ficarello said officers were called to “suspicious activity” near Cook and Eureka streets about 7:30 p.m.

Ficarello said Matthew R. Housman, 23, identified himself to responding officers with another name, but was Matthew R. unable to substanHousman tiate his claim.

“He turned out to have an outstanding warrant and was taken into custody. As he was being searched, we found a small amount of heroin and some empty bags in his pockets,” Ficarello said.

Housman, of the 700 block of West Eureka Street, was booked into the Will County jail

on charges of drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstructing justice. According to jail records, Housman had an outstanding warrant for residential burglary.

Woman shot on Ingalls Avenue in Joliet

JOLIET – Police are investigating a shooting incident that injured a 25-year-old woman early Monday.

Lt. Kevin LaBolle said officers were flagged down about 1 a.m. at Ingalls Avenue and May Street by a man driving an SUV who said a woman was shot several blocks to the east.

Police found the victim near Ingalls and Summit Street with a single gunshot wound that had gone through her left arm and struck her torso. She was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening, LaBolle said.

Spent shell casings were also found at the scene, but no suspect information was available Monday, according to police reports.

Intruder attacks sleeping woman in Joliet apartment

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police say a woman was awakened Sunday morning by an intruder who sexually assaulted her.

Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said the 39-yearold victim was sleeping about 1 a.m. in an apartment in the 300 block of South Des Plaines Street when she was woken up by a man who had come in through an open kitchen window.

“He held his hand over her mouth and told her not to yell or he’d kill her,” Roechner said.

After raping the woman, the intruder told her he

was going to buy food at a nearby gas station and the victim called police.

Roechner said officers went to BP Gas, 6 McDonough St., and found Eric C. Gill, 21, who matched the suspect’s description.

“He had Eric C. Gill the victim’s Link card with him,” Roechner said.

Gill, of the 500 block of Water Street, was arrested and booked into the Will County jail on charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault, home invasion and drug possession.

While the problem could be as simple as a loose gas cap, it could also be something more serious. Aside from a loose gas cap, other reasons for your check engine light coming on are much more complicated to diagnose and likely not things you can fix on the side of the road. “The check engine light can be set for numerous conditions that include everything from a damaged vacuum hose or ignition coil(s) to a failing catalytic converter to worn out spark plugs, a faulty sensor or a poor electrical connection” states Randy Petersen Parts and Service Director at Rod Baker Ford. “Having it checked out once you see it could save you thousands of dollars down the road”, states Randy.

If the light is blinking get to a mechanic immediately, according to motorist.com. It likely means an engine misfire which lets unburned fuel into the exhaust system, overheat-

ing and damaging the catalytic converter, which is an expensive repair. If the light is steady the problem is not an emergency, but you should have your vehicle checked as soon as possible.

Are any of your dashboard gauges showing low oil pressure or overheating? If so, pull over and shut off the engine as soon as possible.

In the meantime, there are things you can do. The cheap and easy fix, is a loose gas cap, which you can check yourself.

Your vehicle may have an indicator light to let you know if it’s loose. If not, just unscrew and screw it back on snugly.

In some cars it may take a few days for the light to reset.

Remember, don’t confuse your check engine light with your car’s maintenance reminder or service interval light, which are onboard tools to help you remember to have routine maintenance done on your car.

Born: Oct. 13, 1928; in Lemont, IL Died: May 11, 2015; in Orlando, FL Theresa Eipers Barrowman, passed away Monday, May 11, 2015, in Orlando, Florida, age 86 years. She was born on October 13, 1928, in Lemont, Illinois to the late Mattias and Emma Eipers.

Survived by her son, Tom Barrowman; sisters, Irene Kuhn and Maryann Clark; and grandsons, Rob Barrowman, Jr. and Randy Barrowman.

RAYMOND H. JONES Born: Nov. 16, 1934 Died: May 16, 2015

Pastor Raymond H. Jones, age 80 of Braceville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 16, 2015.

Born November 16, 1934, in Clarksville, Tennessee, Raymond was a son of the late Sidney and Myrtle Hagwood-Jones.

He was raised and educated in Clarksville, and on June 25, 1966, Raymond married Jeanette E. Sours in Wilmington. He was a retired member of the Carpenter’s Union Local #174, in addition to being a Credentialed Minister with the Church of God, pastoring in Wilming-

ton for 22 years. Raymond was also currently employed by Federated Auto Supplies. He was a long time member of South Wilmington Fireman’s Club, and served on the Braceville Village Board and School Board. He will be remembered as an avid baseball fan, especially the Chicago Cubs, a baseball coach, and for his love of fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years Jeanette; seven children, Richard (Susan) Jones and Pastor Ken (JoAnn) Jones, both of North Carolina, Calvin (Lori) Jones of Wilmington, Connie Jones of Bloomington, Patrick (Carey) Jones of Herscher, Valerie Jones of Gardner and David (Jessica) Jones of Aurora; 20 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one granddaughter, three brothers and one sister.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service 1:00 p.m. at Christian Faith Center, 1800 South Water Street in Wilmington. Pastor Dan Hanners will officiate. Burial will follow in Wesley Cemetery. LUIS F. MAGAÑA Born: Aug. 18, 1948 Died: May 13, 2015

Luis F. Magaña succumbed, after a courageous battle, to Lung Cancer at Silver Cross Hospital on Wednesday, May 13. He leaves behind

a great void in the family he created and nurtured.

Born in Tuxpan, Mexico on August 18, 1948. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelia Cardeñas; and father, David Magaña; as well as two sisters, Christina and Margarita.

He is survived by his devoted wife of thirty-eight years, Nadine; and four children, Monica, Lisa, Louie, and Jennie. Also surviving are his grandsons, Dennis Sweeney and Nicholas Magaña; and a granddaughter, Amara Jeffrie. Also surviving are a special niece, Sulma Mejia; and special nephews, Jose, Antonio, and German Magaña. Three brothers and three sisters survive in Mexico. Numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews also survive.

Luis was first and foremost a family man who put his children and grandchildren before all else. He loved to garden and grow flowers, particularly marigolds. He was an avid reader and could discourse on many subjects.

He had a curiosity and desire to know about many cultures. He was proud to be a Production Manager at Railway and Industrial Services in Crest Hill, IL where he was employed for many years. He will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him.

Born: May 5, 1935; in Union Hill, IL Died: May 16, 2015; in Chicago, IL John Francis Wepprecht, age 80, of Essex, IL passed away Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. Born May 5, 1935, in Union Hill, IL to the late Omar Paul and Marian Frances (nee Boyer) Wepprecht.

John attended Union Hill Grade School and graduated from Reddick High School in 1953. He was a standout athlete, participating in basketball, football, and baseball. He excelled in basketball, receiving a scholarship to the Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL. He soon married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Delores “Dee” (nee Persak), on September 13, 1954. He then went to work for Herscher Natural Gas and Storage Company for thirteen years. In 1966, he worked for Peabody Coal Company, until it closed in 1975.

He continued to work there for one more year to help in the reclamation of the company. He also worked from 1976-1984 as a supervisor at A.O. Smith. Lastly, in 1984, he worked for Commonwealth Edison in the mechanical maintenance department, and retired from Exelon in 2002.

In his youth, he was an avid baseball player, playing for the Essex VFW and Acre Inn fast pitch softball as a catcher and “clean-up hitter”.

He shared his knowledge of baseball by coaching Little League and Senior League for sixteen years. He attended the St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church in Essex and the

Harold James “Bim” West, Jr., age 83, formerly of Dwight, died Thursday, April 2, 2015.

Harold was born January 5, 1932, to Harold and Mary West.

Survivors include his companion, Mary “Midge” Casper; his children, Michael West, Jean Martin (Philip Perry); three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Edward Albert Townsend, age 91, of Malvern passed away at his home May 16, 2015. He was born March 27, 1924, in Wilton Township, Illinois to William and Sarah (Benn) Townsend.

He married his best friend, Violet Marie Lockhart, December 10, 1949.

Ed and Violet lived in New Lenox, Illinois until 1982 when they retired and moved to Arkansas. Known as “Steady Eddie” at Caterpillar, he retired after 29 years, without missing a day of work. He was a Mason and lifetime member of the Matteson Lodge # 175 in Joliet, Illinois. He was also a WWII Army Veteran, a Member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church and defined by example what is was to be an outstanding husband and father.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Violet Townsend of Malvern; two daughters, Penny (Jed) Johnson of Louisville, KY, Gloria Ellen (William) Smith of Burlington, WI; two sons, Larry Edward (Dusty) Townsend of Plano, IL and Mark Allen (Melanie) Townsend of Marshfield, MO; one sister, Mary (Glen) Heusner of Thompsonville, IL; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gary Edwards; two brothers, William and James; and one sister, Evelyn Wuske.

Service will be held Tuesday, May 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the Regency Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jeff Ladd and Chaplain Teddy Frye officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in New Lenox, IL, with Masonic Services on Friday, May 22 at 1:00 p.m.

Company withdraws lawsuit challenging marijuana permit

CHICAGO – An Illinois company announced Monday it has withdrawn the first lawsuit against the state challenging the way officials dispensed medical marijuana business licenses.

Chicago-based PM Rx LLC said in a statement it has agreed to dismiss all its claims against the state and a rival company, Cresco Labs. Cresco had won a permit to grow medical marijuana in a state police district that covers Ford, Iroquois and Kankakee counties, but PM Rx challenged the way the Department of Agriculture issued permits.

“After extensive factual investigation, and in light of the recent tragic passing of PM Rx CEO Andrew James, PM Rx has agreed to dismiss all claims against both Cresco Labs LLC and the state of Illinois with respect to the state’s decision to award Cresco Labs the State Police District 21 cultivation center permit” under the state’s medical marijuana law, PM Rx’s vice president Steve Patterson said in a statement.

Efforts underway to raise $8.8M for governor’s mansion

SPRINGFIELD – Efforts are being launched this week to raise private money to pay for a needed $8.8 million in renovations and repairs to the 160-year-old Illinois Executive Mansion in Springfield.

The Illinois Executive Mansion Association is hosting a cocktail party Wednesday at the mansion that’s expected to be attended by Gov. Bruce Rauner and former governors Jim Edgar and Jim Thompson.

U of Ill. president: Cuts may be less than proposed

URBANA – In his first day on the job, new University of Illinois President Timothy Killeen said Monday he is optimistic state-budget cuts will not be as deep as the 31.5 percent Gov. Bruce Rauner initially proposed.

Such cuts would be devastating for the university, Killeen said.

Killeen told reporters Monday in his office that after speaking with Rauner and lawmakers, he

believes the cuts the university faces as the state tries to deal with a deep budget shortfall will be less severe. And he hopes further talks with lawmakers will help.

“We’re going to work to reduce that number,” Killeen said.

Killeen said one of his top priorities will be emphasizing the value of the university to lawmakers as they work on a state budget this month in Springfield. And he wants to make the university a stronger part of efforts to revitalize the state’s economy.

Official: Police shoot, kill suspect in suburb of Harvey

HARVEY – A spokesman for the southern Chicago suburb of Harvey said police have shot and killed a robbery suspect who fired a weapon at officers in a parking lot.

Harvey spokesman Sean Howard said an officer shot the suspect in the head Sunday afternoon outside St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Howard said officers pursued the man following the report of an armed robbery at a dollar store. He said the suspect fled the store on foot and went inside the church about two blocks away, trying to hide cash inside a bathroom.

After running back outside, Howard said, the man was confronted by an officer and pointed a weapon at police, firing it “at least twice.”

Illinois State Police said its Public Integrity Task Force is investigating the case.

Exelon, Pepco plan to comply with state merger conditions

Chicago-based Exelon joined Pepco Monday in saying they will work to meet the 46 condi-

tions set by Maryland regulators in order for the two energy providers to combine, even though the companies said completing them will be a challenge.

The Maryland Public Service Commission voted Friday to approve the $6.8 billion combination but gave the companies a long list of conditions, including giving some residential customers a $100 credit and setting aside $43.2 million for energy efficiency programs. The commission also said Pepco and its subsidiary, Delmarva Power, must meet performance standards from 2016 through 2020.

Exelon announced plans to buy Pepco 12 months ago. The deal would combine Exelon Corp.’s electric and gas utilities BGE, ComEd and PECO with Pepco Holdings Inc.’s Atlantic City Electric, Delmarva Power and its namesake utility.

By ALLEN G. BREED The Associated Press Former undercover agent Jay Dobyns said people can be forgiven for thinking Sunday’s biker bloodbath in Waco, Texas, was a throwback to a bad 1970s movie.

The shootout – which killed nine people and wounded 18 – seemed aberrant because the public image of many motorcycle gangs has been burnished in recent years thanks to the many largely benign bike enthusiasts who’ve co-opted some of the same clothing and style.

“I think, as a society, and to a large extent even in law enforcement, we fall into the sense that these guys are these big, rough-looking teddy bears that do blood drives and toy runs and are harmless,” said Dobyns, who infiltrated the notorious Hells Angels Motorcycle Club for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

“These are people that have used the motorcycle culture as camouflage.”

The more sinister side of biker culture was thrust into the spotlight after Sunday’s shooting in the parking lot of a restaurant where members of several rival gangs were having a meeting.

By Monday, authorities had charged about 170 gang members with engaging in organized crime.

Motorcycle culture’s image problem goes back at least to 1947, when a race in Hollister, California, descended into two days of bloody riots.

The American Motorcycle Association, the race’s sponsor, responded to the coverage by declaring that 99 percent of participants were law-abiding.

To this day, gangs such as the Outlaws refer to themselves as “1 percenters,” said Terry Katz, former commander of the Maryland State Police’s organized crime section. Trouble is, it’s some-

Good and bad alike call their organizations “clubs.”

Both use the term “colors” for the emblems on the backs of their jackets and vests.

“Wear your colors with pride,” advertises a California company that makes patches for biker clubs, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, even the Boy Scouts of America.

Don Chambers, founder of the Bandidos gang, modeled his club’s emblem – a sombrero-wearing Mexican caricature carrying a sword and pistol – after the corn chip company’s Frito Bandito mascot, said Katz, who went undercover in the 1970s as an associate to two clubs, the Pagans and the Phantoms. Other clubs that want to operate on their turf are required to wear a patch called a “support cookie,” so named because it’s the size and shape of a cookie.

“You have a major gang.

Then you have like a puppet club or you can call it a farm team that is part of their organization. But they’re not a member of the big dogs,” said Katz, vice president of the International Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigators Association.

Katz said bikers maim and kill each other all the time.

The only thing unusual about the Waco confrontation was that it happened in public.

“I get that question all the time: ‘Are these guys still around?’ ” he said. “Of course, they are. But they’ve lowered their profile, because it’s bad for business to be involved in something where you’re going to attract a great deal of law enforcement attention.

They’ve never gone away. In fact, they’ve grown.”

Some clubs boast chapters on the other side of the globe.

“You look at crime syndicates. They come to America from other places,” says Dobyns, who lives in Tuscon, Arizona. “But the biker culture? That is America’s export to the ... world of crime syndicates.”

YACOUB The Associated Press BAGHDAD – Islamic State militants searched doorto-door for policemen and pro-government fighters and threw bodies in the Euphrates River in a bloody purge Monday after capturing the strategic city of Ramadi, their biggest victory since overrunning much of northern and western Iraq last year.

About 500 civilians and soldiers died in the extremist killing spree since the final push for Ramadi began Friday, authorities said.

Responding to a call from Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, hundreds of Iranian-allied Shiite militiamen rushed to a military base near Ramadi, the capital of overwhelmingly Sunni Anbar province, to prepare for an assault to try to retake the city, Anbar officials said.

Obama administration concerns that the presence of Shiite fighters in the Sunni-dominated region could spark sectarian bloodshed. Until now, the defense of Anbar has been in the hands of the Iraqi military fighting alongside Sunni tribesmen, who al-Abadi’s Shiite-led government had vowed to arm and support – something it has done only sporadically.

The Shiite militias have been key to victories against the Islamic State group on other fronts north of Baghdad in recent months. But they have also been widely criticized over accusations of extrajudicial killings of Sunnis, as well as of looting and torching Sunni property – charges militia leaders deny.

In the face of the Islamic State group’s brutality, some Sunnis appeared ready to accept help even from the Shiite militiamen.

“We welcome any group, in-

cluding Shiite militias, to come and help us in liberating the city from the militants,” said Sunni tribal leader Naeem alGauoud, who fought to defend Ramadi and criticized what he called “lack of good planning by the military.”

But Abu Ammar, another Anbar native who owns a grocery store in Ramadi, said he saw no difference between the Islamic State group’s brutal practices and those of Shiite militiamen.

“If the Shiite militias enter Ramadi, they will do the same things being done by Daesh,” he said, using an Arabic acronym for the militant group. “In both cases, we will be either killed or displaced. For us, the militias and IS militants are two faces of the same coin.”

The fall of Ramadi prompted Iran’s defense minister, Gen. Dossein Dehghan, to make a surprise visit to Baghdad for urgent talks with Iraqi leaders.

“The venue thing is obviously strong. Anybody who would sit on the jury in Boston has been personally affected by the event in question,” said Eric M. Freedman, a death penalty specialist and professor of constitutional law at Hofstra Law School.

Others say the judge had valid reasons to keep the trial in Boston and scrupulously tried to weed out potential jurors who were biased.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A lot of athletes miss out on being able to play on a close team that not only likes having a good time but also gets to experience some success.

That’s why the six seniors on Joliet West’s boys volleyball team feel fortunate to be on just such a squad this season.

The Tigers had a lot to be pleased with after improving to 22-10 after a 25-15, 25-14 SouthWest Suburban Conference win Monday over rival Joliet Central on senior night at West.

Leading coach Jason Herrmann’s squad were seniors Max Ahern (five kills), David Carpenter (two blocks), Tyler Hirsch (three aces, four digs), Juwann Jackson (seven kills), Jon Medina (four digs) and Matt Wyman (five kills, five digs).

“We’ve beaten a lot of good teams, and it’s given us a lot of energy heading into the playoffs,” Wyman said. “I love this team and how we’re one huge family. Everyone jokes around with each other. This is the closest team that I’ve ever played on in my life.”

The Tigers lost a talented group from a year ago, but to the coaching staff’s credit, West has put together another fine season against tough competition.

“Even though we lost a lot of good players, we’ve come together more as a team, and that’s increased our strengths and know how each of us plays,” Medina said. “We love to have fun and I love how we’re together like a family.

It’s really rare to be on a team like this.”

West has improved quite a bit since the start of the season, and the six seniors know that the future looks bright with so many key junior performers.

“The whole entire year, all of us have come to practice every single day and worked as hard as we could,” Hirsch said. “We’ve beaten a lot of good teams, and we have a good winning record. I like

guys from last year, it just pushed us to get better,” Carpenter said. “So we’ve been in the gym every day just working hard. This group is probably the closest that I’ve ever been with a team. We share a bond that is special and show it every day.”

While it’s great to be on such a close team, it’s also nice to be able to enjoy the entire experience. The Tigers have learned how to be serious while also having a good time.

“Every second we step onto the court, we get closer,” Ahern said. “We spend a lot of time with each other, both inside and outside of school.

Right from the beginning of the season, we felt a close bond. When it’s business, we get down to it. But we really like to have fun.”

West also received nice efforts from several juniors.

Kyler Van Rossum-O’Connell handed out 23 assists, Luke Van Eck contributed five kills, and Scott Lyman added seven digs.

Meanwhile, Central has had to keep everything in perspective. Coach Zak Krumlinde has one of the toughest jobs around, trying to assemble a squad that features a lot of inexperienced players while still competing in one of the state’s toughest conferences.

“Ever since match one, we’ve gotten drastically better,” Krumlinde said. “We’ve progressed after having just one returning varsity player from last year, our setter Nick Weisfus. JOLIET – When Al Pagnusat stepped down as head coach of Plainfield Central’s girls track and field program in 2008, if you had told him he’d be headed to the IHSA finals on Memorial Day weekend 2015, he likely would have let out a hearty laugh.

But the veteran coach, whose career has covered parts of five decades, will be on hand at Eastern Illinois University along with four athletes from Joliet West who hope to become the district’s first medal winners in 10 years.

A few years back, Pagnusat figured his coaching days were over – and considering the success he had enjoyed, that was fine. After beginning as an assistant at Joliet West under Roger Swank, Pagnusat had a good run working along with Ken Gill at Joliet Central.

Then in 1994, he headed to Plainfield to become an assistant. A year later, he was head coach of a program that hadn’t enjoyed much success since Kathy Kazmar’s tenure. Over the next 14 years, the Wildcats rewrote the record book under Pagnusat’s guidance.

But instead of taking up residence in the old coaches home – or, more likely, spending his spare time fishing or traveling with wife, Sally – Pagnusat was enticed to return to coaching the sport at West. And he can thank the district’s director of activities and athletics, Chris Olson, who had been Pagnusat’s boss for a time as Wildcats athletic director.

“We started out almost 40 years ago with Roger Swank, who’s an institution,” Pagnusat said. “Then getting to work with Chris Crowther and all of the wonderful kids in the late ’70s – and they spoiled you, and I got excited about working with kids every day.

“After East closed, I got to be a part of the heyday for Central track. Coach Gill and I worked well together, and then coach (Doug) Cherry came in.

Then I moved over to Plainfield, and it was a struggle initially. But, again, here comes

After the township program split back into West and Central teams, Olson convinced Pagnusat it was time to get back into the game.

“I told Chris that I was done, that I was retired, and he told me to come over and we’d talk,” Pagnusat said. “He told me that we’d get the fieldhouse every day from 3:30 to 5:30, and I told him that we had a deal.

“We have great facilities, but you still have to have the kids, and the first couple of years we struggled a bit. But now we’re putting together groups of kids who are willing to work hard, and we’re seeing another situation where something special is going to happen.”

Al Pagnusat Joliet West girls track sprint/jumps coach as head coach, the Tigers have been making significant progress each year, and their fortunes appear to be very bright for upcoming seasons.

“Sally has the organizational skills and the patience that I’ve never really had,” Pagnusat said. “So now I have to listen to her 24/7 since she’s the head coach. She’s always quick to say, ‘No, he’s basically the head coach,’ but that’s the furthest thing from the truth.

“Kelly Halusek is our distance coach, and she’s very enthusiastic. We didn’t have a shot or discus person, so Barb Lantz – who threw for us at Central – stepped in. And Seandell Davis is phenomenal young man and totally immersed in track and field and a wonderful role model.

Everyone on the staff is so positive and wants the kids to enjoy the experience.”

So while he’s still hobbling around a bit because of recent

left knee replacement surgery, Pagnusat is excited to see long jumper Melzina Johnson and the 4x100-meter relay of Kristine Bourg, Brandy Teague, Jessica Orr and Johnson cap a good season in Charleston.

Like everyone at the Naperville North Sectional, West wanted a few more qualifiers, but a rainy night affected those hopes. Still, four individuals advanced, and none are seniors.

“It’s real exciting,” Pagnusat said. “The girls listen and work real hard, and they’re seeing results. The girls bought into things hook, line and sinker, and we’re happy they did.

“I’ve been fortunate to have coached several special groups of kids who are fun and willing to work and have no issues with grades or behavior. They’re focused on being the best that they possibly can be and just want your help. That’s why I can’t wait to get to practice.”

Morris’ Burns silences Joliet Central bats

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – If there is a pitch in the softball world that Morris sophomore Abby Burns does not throw, that would be news.

Burns hurled everything in her vast repertoire at the Joliet Central hitters on Monday afternoon, pitching the Redskins to an 8-0 nonconference victory.

“This was one of my better games,” said Burns, who threw all of her five pitches – fastball, change, drop, screwball and riseball – liberally in baffling the Steelmen.

So good was the right-hander that she struck out the first eight batters, 11 through four innings, 13 through five and 15 in all as Morris (22-8) won for the 11th time in its last 14 games.

Central (8-23) did not have a

baserunner until Ashley Hare’s bunt single with one out in the fourth inning. Burns walked one batter in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Then in the seventh, thanks to a game-ending double play, she escaped her only jam to preserve the shutout.

“The wind was good for me today,” Burns said. “It was helping my pitches, working in my favor.”

Burns had a game earlier this season where she struck out all but one out through five innings. “But I don’t usually strike out this many,” she said.

“They started to get used to me toward the end.”

“We’ve seen pitchers who move the ball around, use different pitches and throw strikes like she does,” Steelmen coach Erin Douglas said. “We’ve usually hit them OK. I’m not sure

why we struggled so much today.”

Hare’s bunt single was the only Central hit through six innings. Christina Valentino – who played a strong defensive game at third base – singled, and Shelby Fischer followed with a single to open the bottom of the seventh. A one-out walk loaded the bases, but Morris third baseman Ryan Friend fielded a ground ball, threw to catcher Emily Moore for a forceout, and her relay to first completed the game-ending double play.

“Abby really took control,” Morris softball coach Jen Lowery said of Burns. “She is not overpowering, but her ball moves. It’s hard to hit a pitcher who moves it up and down, in and out, and has good offspeed pitches.

“She has been throwing well

the last few weeks, incorporating all her pitches. She has better stamina now, which is good heading toward the postseason.”

Burns worked from an early comfort level as Morris scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second off righthander Hanna Gawenda, who blanked the Redskins in the third through sixth innings.

Jasmine Cook singled in the first inning and with two outs, Ashley Phelps ripped the first of her three hits. A two-base error in the outfield allowed the two runs to score.

Taya Torkelson opened the second inning with a single, Gigi Corban singled, and Torkelson scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0. Janelle Bream and Moore singled home runs, and Phelps knocked in another with a double.

The Morris bats then went silent until the seventh when Moore singled, Phelps doubled her home, and Phelps eventually scored on a passed ball.

Phelps had three of Morris’ 12 hits, and Brehm, Moore and Torkelson added two each.

“We have a leadoff hitter [Brehm] who does a great job getting on base, and the middle of our lineup hits the ball hard,” Lowery said. “We hit well the first couple of innings, then fell kind of flat, and we got back at it in the seventh. That’s one thing we need in the postseason – we’ve got to be consistent.”

“It seemed like every ball they put in play was hit hard,” Douglas said. “Our third baseman [Valentino] and our outfield stepped up defensively and gave us a chance, where this game otherwise could have ended early.”

Jordan Wellander, one of the club’s top relievers a year ago, was given the opportunity to start a game in the opening series. The experiment did not work out, and Isom said Wellander is returning to the bullpen.

The probable pitcher for the home opener is David Kubiak, with Jordan Guth going in the 10:05 a.m. game Wednesday against Lake Erie. Those two started the two games at Florence that the Slammers could have won.

After that, Isom said he probably will go with Aaron Vaughn to close the Lake Erie series Thursday night, and Brett DeVall and Andrew Strenge in the first two games of the Gateway series that will complete the

first homestand.

“We competed in Games 1 and 2 at Florence,” Isom said. “We just didn’t get the key two-out hits. Our heads aren’t down by any means.

“What we want to do in the games here at home is get off to good starts. We saw some good things so far, and we want to continue that.”

Isom likes the offensive potential of the Slammers’ lineup. Charlie White has been leading off, followed

by Nate Roberts, Chris Serritella, Mike Garza, Russell Moldenhauer, Alfredo Rodriguez, Hunter Ridge, Jack Cleary and Max Casper.

Serritella is swinging a hot bat. He homered twice in Friday’s 6-5 loss at Florence.

A criticism of baseball, all the way up to the major league level, is pace of play.

The Frontier League has attempted to address that issue, having batters keep a foot in the box and pitchers not take too much time between pitches. That may or may not result in a quicker average time of games.

However, the Frontier

League has taken things a step further, adopting the international tiebreaker rule. After 10 innings, each side will begin its at-bat in each subsequent inning with the runner on second base who made the last out the previous inning.

“I don’t know how I’m going to like this,” Isom said. “It completely favors the home team. It’s like in college football, there’s a big advantage going to the team that wins the overtime toss and [plays defense first]. I see it favoring the home team more so than usual.”

Hey, that may be a good thing. With the Slammers’ home-heavy schedule the next couple months, perhaps there will be occasions when they are able to take advantage of the rule. Fans who attend this season-opening homestand may get to see it work firsthand.

All-Star race win worth $1 million to Hamlin

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press CONCORD, N.C. – Denny Hamlin intently watched the qualifying event for NASCAR’s annual All-Star race and noticed, as has been the case in recent years, the driver out front in the waning laps almost certainly was guaranteed the win.

As Greg Biffle led all 20 laps of the Sprint Showdown Saturday to earn a spot in the AllStar race, Hamlin understood nothing that about NASCAR’s current rules package has changed. To win the $1 million prize, he’d have to be the leader exiting Turn 2 on the first lap of the final segment.

Hamlin wasn’t alone in that theory.

“The final 10 laps, you’ve got to be on the front row,” Hamlin said. “Aero means so much with these cars nowadays that the person out front just has a huge advantage. I knew once we got cleared going into turn one, we had a great shot.”

And that’s how Hamlin earned what he considers the biggest win of his career. His victory in the dash-for-cash at Charlotte Motor Speedway gave team owner Joe Gibbs his first All-Star race victory in 24 years of trying, and it was the first for Toyota.

He wasn’t alone in his belief that he had to be out front for that final restart, which came after a mandatory fourtire pit stop for the entire

field. Cars entered pit road in the order of their average finishing position over the first four segments of the race, and Hamlin was sixth overall.

But his Joe Gibbs Racing team had won the pole earlier, and he was pitting in the first stall on the track. The No. 11 crew, considered one of the top over-the-wall groups in the Sprint Cup Series, used a rapid pit stop to get Hamlin rolling, and he held off Brad Keselowski in the race back to the track.

Keselowski rolled off second, but was flagged for speeding and had to forfeit that position. Had he not sped, he would have tried to beat Hamlin on the restart to control the final 10 laps.

Ultimately, Hamlin only had to hold off Kevin Harvick, who had the speed in his car to make a run at the win.

All along, Joliet Slammers manager Jeff Isom has cited the Frontier League schedule.

It is much more favorable this season than a year ago, when the Slammers got off to a slow start and had to battle all season merely to avoid the cellar in the West Division.

During the weekend, the Slammers began the 2015 season with three straight losses at Florence. However, don’t be surprised if things look a whole lot brighter beginning with Tuesday night’s home opener against Lake Erie.

From now until the allstar break in mid-July, the Slammers have 33 home games at Silver Cross Field in Joliet and only 15 on the road. That could help put the local team in good position to make a run at the playoffs.

Those who have said a winning Slammers’ team will make a difference from an attendance standpoint may have an opportunity to back up their words.

‘Right to work’ vote puts some Republicans in bind Gov. Bruce Rauner had several House Republicans over to the Executive Mansion last week to ask them to vote “Present” when the House Democrats called their “right to work” bill the following day.

Right-to-work laws allow union members to not pay for any of their union’s services, even though unions are required by federal law to service all their members.

The laws can cripple unions – which may help businesses, but it tends to drive down wages for working folks.

Why would the Democrats bring an anti-union bill to the House floor? Various reasons, one of them being that they are so opposed to the idea and the governor has pushed it so forcefully that they wanted to finally get the issue off the table by killing it dead. They also wanted to put the Republicans in a tight spot of choosing between the governor and their friends in organized labor.

Anyway, the governor’s push last week was resisted by a handful of Republicans, even after House GOP Leader

Jim Durkin demanded that they stick with the governor and vote “Present.”

Several eventually relented, and the governor reportedly said they would be free to vote “No” when a “real” bill is presented but that they all needed to stick together and hit their yellow buttons to protest House Speaker Michael Madigan’s ploy to put them all on the hot seat. It probably didn’t hurt that Rauner contributed a grand total of $400,000 earlier in the week to what his staff said was every Republican legislator in Springfield.

The meeting at the mansion was often tense, insiders say, although there was reportedly a moment of levity when one of the governor’s beloved dogs made a doo-doo in front of legislators while Rauner was giving his pitch.

Believe it or not, quite a few unions in this state have spent years wooing Republican legislators. The Illinois Education Association has a strong presence in suburbia and downstate, and the union long has endorsed a significant number of GOP

Getting on their wrong side can be a hazard to one’s political health, which is just one reason why so many Republican legislators were nervous last week.

The IEA sent House Republicans a “simple” message last week: “We expect a ‘No’ vote,” said one IEA lobbyist. “Show that you are supportive of the middle class. A vote to the contrary, and they will have to explain themselves to our members.”

The Republicans pleaded their case that the bill mainly was just political theater designed to make them look bad.

But the IEA and other unions wouldn’t budge, leaving legislators to choose between their party’s governor (and his tens of millions of dollars in campaign cash) and their union allies.

Illinois AFL-CIO president Mike Carrigan said last week,

“Anything but a solid ‘No’ vote,” will “not be tolerated and will be considered as an inexcusable vote against labor.”

Carrigan also specifically said “Present” votes weren’t acceptable. Skipping the vote altogether wouldn’t be a good idea, either, Carrigan warned.

“House member absences will be reviewed with suspicious eyes.”

In the end, only one Republican sided openly with the unions and Democrats by voting “No” on the bill, Rep. Raymond Poe of Springfield.

Four union-friendly Republicans didn’t vote at all (Reps.

John Anthony, Bill Mitchell, Michael McAuliffe and John Cabello). A few others didn’t vote, either, but that likely had more to do with the process and/or their relationships with their party leaders than anything else.

Some Republicans with past union ties voted with the governor. Rep. Dwight Kay, for instance, was endorsed by the IEA for the first time last year, but he voted “Present.”

One of Rauner’s main goals is to split the Republican

Party from all union ties. If the unions follow through with their threats, some of those ties most certainly will be broken.

And the Republicans aren’t the ones that unions have to be worried about. The House Black Caucus sent a clear message to trade unions during the debate that they need to start admitting more minorities or they’ll face retaliation.

Rauner has attempted to peel off black and Latino legislators from labor by playing up the historic “whiteness” of the trade unions and promising affirmative action-style reforms. In remarks planned in advance with other Black Caucus members, Rep. Ken Dunkin, D-Chicago, said during debate that the problem needed to be addressed soon or trouble could arise.

Almost all minority legislators stood during his speech and stared at the gallery where labor leaders were seated.

New Lenox woman receives life-saving kidney donation from a stranger

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – In early 2014, a Facebook friend of Kellie Lonchar, 51, of Ohio shared a post from a New Lenox woman seeking a kidney donor.

Lonchar, widowed at a young age when she had three small children, scrolled through the comments assuring the woman – Michelle Doyle – of prayers and well-wishes.

But Lonchar, who also had the rare Type O-negative blood Doyle had, thought she needed to do more.

“Her story resonated with me, and I could not stop thinking about this woman,” Lonchar said. “I don’t know why.”

On Sept. 30, Lonchar met Doyle. On Oct. 2, Lonchar donated one of her kidneys to Doyle and saved her life.

Virtual call for help

By January 2014, Doyle’s surgeon warned her she was a ticking time bomb. She no longer had any kidneys, and her doctor told her she needed to turn to social media to help find a live donor. She needed to stop worrying people might pity her.

So – reluctantly – Doyle did. She is humbled at Lonchar’s generosity and called her amazing.

“She’s like the sister I never knew,” Doyle said.

Looking back, Doyle said she knew her kidneys were in trouble, but she didn’t want to admit it. Her grandmother, Lorraine Steinquist, (deceased) had begun hemodialysis when she was 45 for polycystic kidney disease.

Doyle’s mother, Cheryl Doyle, also was 45 when she began dialysis. Fifteen years ago, Pam Vanderbilt of New Lenox, Cheryl’s neighbor, donated one of her kidneys to Cheryl. One of Doyle’s uncles also had a kidney transplant,

Dr. Tom Antkowiak performed the cutting-edge anterior hip replacement procedure on Langs’ hip at Silver Cross Hospital. This is an alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery.

During anterior hip re-

placement surgery, the hip joint is accessed through a smaller incision by entering through the front of the body and working between the hip.

The surgeon works between the tissues without detaching them or cutting them. This leads to less tissue trauma, less pain and often a faster recovery.

The anterior surgical approach is less invasive, hospital stays are shorter, and patients are able to return to their work or chosen activity faster with less pain.

Antkowiak and Dr. Rajeev Puri, orthopedic surgeons, will discuss the latest treatment plans for hip pain and degenerative hip conditions – including hip arthroscopy and total anterior hip replacement – in a program Thursday.

Do you like wild bridge deals, ones with crazy distribution? If today’s deal were played in a duplicate, there would be several different auctions, but the two most likely final contracts would be five spades by South (perhaps after the given auction) and six diamonds doubled by East, who refused to sell out to five spades because of his side’s double fit in the minors.

How should the defense go against each of those contracts?

West used the Unusual No-trump to show at least 5-5 in the minors.

North’s jump to four spades was pre-emptive: long spades, weak hand.

East had an easy five-diamond bid.

But then, when South persisted with five spades, East probably should have gone on to six.

Although it would theoretically have been a phantom sacrifice (both five spades and six diamonds can be defeated), when one has a double fit, it usually pays to declare.

Against five spades, West leads the diamond ace. Since the queen is on the board, East plays the nine, a count card showing an even number. West cashes the diamond king. Now East, with attitude and count known, should send a suit-preference signal by dropping the two to ask for a club shift. Then five spades fails. But if West leads a heart or a third diamond, the contract makes.

To defeat six diamonds, South must cash two heart tricks -- not so hard.

The entire colon can be examined, just as is true with adults. If a polyp is spotted, it can be painlessly removed during the colonoscopy. The removed polyp then can be examined to see what type it is, and whether it might turn cancerous.

Even though polyps that can turn cancerous are very unusual in kids, they occur. In addition, if a polyp is not removed, it will continue to grow larger and may bleed again. That’s why polyps, once identified, are removed.

Fortunately, you can help reduce your son’s chances of developing cancerous polyps in the following ways: • Increase his consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

• Limit his intake of processed red meats.

• Encourage at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days.

• Aim for him to maintain a healthy weight.

As your son gets older, stress the importance of not smoking, as it increases the risk of colon cancer.

It will also be important for your son to be regularly screened for colon cancer. His doctor should tell you how often he should have a colonoscopy.

It is scary to learn that your child has a growth in his colon. Scarier, still, to learn that sometimes such growths can turn into cancer. However, the outlook is likely good for your son.

Dear Doctor K: My young son had rectal bleeding caused by a colon polyp, which the doctor surgically removed. Why did he develop a polyp?

Can we do anything to prevent more polyps from forming?

Dear Reader: Colon polyps are growths of tissue inside the colon (large intestine). I’ve put an illustration of a colon polyp on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

Most people think of colon polyps as a problem only for adults, but children also get colon polyps. In fact, they are a relatively common cause of bleeding from the rectum in children.

There are several types of colon polyps.

Most are not cancerous, but some have a tendency to turn into colon cancer.

Some people are born with a genetic tendency to develop multiple polyps. Certain inherited conditions can cause hundreds of polyps to grow in the colon and rectum.

Two of these conditions, both of which are rare, are familial adenomatous polyposis and Gardner’s syndrome.

A child born with one of these conditions definitely is at risk for developing colon cancer, even at a young age.

Children who do have such rare conditions may need to have their colons completely removed. This will eliminate the risk of colon cancer.

Because these types of polyps are so rare, it’s unlikely that your son has to worry about cancer. It sounds like your son has a common juvenile polyp, and does not have one of the inherited conditions that cause multiple polyps and a high risk of colon cancer.

Most children with bleeding from the rectum should get a colonoscopy.

He likes having people around ALL the time, and because he is a minister, we often can’t avoid it. I have tried to accommodate his friends and hangers-on, but lately it’s becoming unbearable.

I have tried over the years to make sense of his attitude toward me (also toward those he’s offered help).
