St. Peter’s German Evangelical Church was organized Oct. 28, 1867. Thirteen German and Swiss families sought to begin a congregation where they could practice their evangelical faith and worship in their native tongue.

The heritage of the church can be traced back to the three main bodies of early Protestantism – Congregationalism, the Reform branch of the Christian Church in Switzerland, and the Evangelical Church of Germany.

Within a year, a church was built that served the growing congregation for many decades.

By 1910, the original white frame church proved to be too small for the growing congregation. On Feb. 6, 1916, a new church, located on Sauk Trail, just east of Ash Street, was dedicated.

Within a decade, a modern parsonage was built.

Over the years, additions and remodeling work was completed to the church.

Educational wings were added to the church building in 1953 and 1967.

These additions helped to expand the programs of the church and included a modern kitchen, office, lounge, choir room and several classrooms.

never was popular as Greek or Italianate styles, but it’s surprising how often this style reveals itself in churches, houses and some public buildings.

Gothic Revival mostly was popular between 18401860 for houses, usually in a wood-frame form referred to as Carpenter Gothic.

It remained a popular style for churches nationally right up through the 1940s (World War II), due primarily to its association with European ecclesiastical architecture. It is most abundant in the northeastern United States.

The Gothic style, when applied to a cathedral, emphasizes verticality and light.

This type of appearance was achieved by the development of certain architectural features, which helped to solve certain engineering problems while also creating a unique new style of building.

The structural parts of the building now became a stone skeleton that was supported by clustered columns, pointed ribbed vaults and flying buttresses. Other features found in this style of architecture included a steeply pitched roof, cross-gabled, the vaulted ceiling, the pointed-arch and decorative and ornate items incorporated into the building style.

St. Peter’s Church is known today for its traditional architecture, beautiful stained glass windows, rich wood furnishings and carvings, organ, carillon and large steeple.

O’Dekirk plans to expand Housing Authority board

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk wants to add two members to the Housing Authority of Joliet board of commissioners.

The Joliet City Council is slated Tuesday to vote on the appointments of Robert Hernandez, a former HAJ commissioner, and Maria Cottrell, who had worked at the Housing Authority for 24

years before leaving in 2014.

If approved by the council, the appointments would return the board to seven commissioners.

Former Mayor Tom Giarrante reduced the size of the board from seven to five commissioners in 2013 in a restructuring that occurred after a critical report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

HUD, among other things, suggested a five-member

board would be more effective, Giarrante said at the time.

O’Dekirk said he read the letter suggesting the smaller board.

“It was a comment that if you have seven on the board, you may have political appointees who don’t know what they are doing,” O’Dekirk said.

He said Hernandez and Cottrell are “individuals who are familiar with the opera-

tions over there. I think they will fit right in.”

Cottrell was human resources coordinator for 12 years at the Housing Authority. Hernandez was a commissioner from 1991 to 1995.

O’Dekirk said when he was a police officer he worked with Hernandez on issues involving public housing.

Hernandez has been an occasional speaker at City Council meetings and had been critical at times of Gia-

rrante. A year ago, he joined the debate over the city’s pending takeover of the Evergreen Terrace housing complex, saying Joliet officials had exaggerated the amount of crime there.

O’Dekirk also was critical of his predecessor’s handling of Evergreen Terrace, saying the city lacked a detailed plan. O’Dekirk wants to present a detailed plan for the City Council to consider in June.

City says Car Credit Inc. lot in Joliet has too many cars

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Alex Royce said the city must be making a mistake because it wants to shut down his used car lot for having too many vehicles on it.

“If somebody comes to see a car, and there are five or seven cars, it looks like you’re not in business,” said Royce, who sells cars at Car Credit Inc. The car lot is at Jefferson and Center streets in Joliet, a busy corner that makes it a visible location for car sales.

But not everyone who drives by the lot likes what they see.

“We continuously get complaints from residents and people who just drive by,” said Kendall Jackson, planning director for the city of Joliet.

People think the lot is overcrowded and looks bad, Jackson said.

The Joliet Zoning Board of Appeals is scheduled Thursday to consider a vote to revoke the zoning Car Credit needs to sell used cars at the site. The board meets at 2 p.m. at City Hall. The matter will then go to the City Council for consideration.

The Joliet City Council in 2013 issued a special-use permit for the car lot at 101 N. Center St., but limited the lot to 10 cars.

On the day Royce was interviewed last week, there were 12 cars marked for sale.

There were eight other cars on the lot, too, several of which Royce described as cus-

tomers’ cars.

“I think that is part of the problem,” Jackson said of the extra cars. “It was hard for staff to determine what was what.”

Jackson said ownership of the business has changed since the permit was issued.

The council approved the special-use permit despite some comments that Jeffer-

son Street already had too many used car lots. Others pointed out the property had a history of used car sales.

The lot, which was used for car sales before 2013, is owned by the Kinney family, who at one time had an American Motors Corp. new-car dealership on the other side of Center Street. The Kinney showroom building still is in the neighborhood.

Jackson said the old Kinney showroom is used by Car Credit Inc., and city staff wants the business to move some cars there.

“It is a limited site there because of the size and configuration of the lot,” he said.

“It’s even more important to have the appropriate number of cars there so customers can go in there and do their shopping.”

Royce, however, said it’s good for business to have more cars in the lot. Customers want to see more, not less, he said.

Royce pointed to another small used car lot about a block north on Center Street that has as many cars as his.

Across Jefferson Street is another used car lot, which has more cars, although it is larger.

“I can move them,” Royce said of the extra cars. “It’s no problem. But I think when they approved it for 10 cars, it was too low. On this lot, you can put 15 or 16 cars.”

Man of integrity Joliet man with liver transplant promoted organ donation

The road to his liver transplant began in 1972. Jerry had undergone a kidney procedure when the surgeon noticed a problem with Jerry’s liver.

Jerry went into liver failure in 1991 during a business trip to California for Sher-

dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Jean Herbst of Joliet couldn’t believe what happened after her husband Gerald “Jerry” Herbst of Joliet was prepped for his liver transplant.

Shortly afterward, Jean said the surgeon approached her in the waiting area and told her something was wrong with the new liver, that it would not work for Jerry, and he needed to go back on the transplant list.

That wasn’t the result Jerry and Jean had anticipated, but they made the best of it.

“Jerry put on his pants, walked out of intensive care and had lunch,” Jean said.

“Three days later, we got the call and were blessed by a liver from a 34-year-old woman.”

On Feb. 6, 1992, Jerry had the transplant; later, he and Jean met the donor’s parents.

After Jerry retired in 1994, he and Jean spoke at schools, libraries and other organizations in support of organ donation, Jean said.

They also joined Organ Transplant Support Inc. in Naperville and added a Norway maple tree to the trees the organization planted at Naper Settlement in honor of donors, Jean said.

Although Jerry promoted the serious need for organ donors, his sense of humor – the kind that made him hang spoons from his nose or wear tiaras at family gatherings – allowed him to see the lighter side of his experience.

“When he got back to golfing, he wanted to use lady tees to golf, because his liver was from a lady,” Jean said.

“But the guys told him he couldn’t do that.”

earned, he bought his mother a refrigerator,” Jean said.

Jean had met Jerry in high school. She and a friend from St. Francis Academy had doubled-dated with Jerry and a friend to a dance at Catholic High School. Jerry was Jean’s friend’s date, but Jerry and Jean danced all night.

She immediately liked the man with Rock Hudson-good looks who took life seriously.

Jerry was a little boy when his father, who worked for an electric company, was electrocuted while working on a pole. By age 8, Jerry added to his mother’s income by delivering newspapers.

“With the money he

Known for being a man of integrity, Jerry could discern integrity in the people he hired. Some of those employees flew in to be pallbearers after Jerry died, Jean said.

“My dad was a good judge of character,” said Renee Herbst of Shorewood, Jerry’s daughter. “He valued integrity and honesty, and he found people that had the same qualities. A lot of these people moved up the company ladder because they were promotable individuals.”

Pro-family until his death Jan. 6 at the age of 80, Jerry could fix anything around the house, listened to all the family’s troubles and insisted when his only granddaughter, Elaine Bottomley of Joliet, was a little girl on buying her an Easter dress every year, said Rita Herbst Bottomley, Jerry’s daughter.

“And it always had to have a hat,” Rita said.

Marie Lynch is one of the original School Crew members.

She spends every Friday afternoon at Walnut Trails in two classrooms – one kindergarten and one special education. Most of the time Lynch works with students on their reading skills, but sometimes there are other fun projects to get involved in.

Lynch loves the fact she is helping foster a love for learning in these young minds.

“I leave with a smile on my face every time I volunteer.”

This has been Linda Smith’s first year at Walnut Trails and she plans to continue next year.

She loves how the kids are so enthusiastic when she’s there.

Smith feels very lucky in her own life and wanted to find a way to give back to the community. Plus she loves kids, so the program was a perfect

match for her.

Smith’s favorite children’s books are the “Fly Guy” series

by Tedd Arnold. All the kids know this about her. So she was touched when one of the young students created his own three-page book about “Fly Guy,” complete with pictures, just for Smith.

Barb Tschopp works with two different teachers. One thing she loves is helping students with voice control – how to express a sentence with an exclamation or question, or how a parrot might sound if he were speaking.

Now that the program is in its second year, the volunteers have gotten to know both the students and the teachers very well, she said, which makes the program really work.

And it’s the special moments, such as getting a handmade book, helping to accomplish a reading goal or having students wave to them as they pass in the hall, that makes volunteering so rewarding.

When my boys were in grade school I volunteered in the classroom to help students learn to read. Along with other parents, I would sit outside the classroom in the hall with one student at a time and listen to them read, encouraging them to sound out tough words.

Even though I’ve been involved in the writing field in one way or another for most of my life, it was not always easy to help a struggling child learn to read. But I volunteered to help the school my children attended. So it’s kind of neat when a group of retired educators and professionals join forces to volunteer at a local school just to use their own skills and to give back to the community where they live.

That would be the SG2 School Crew from Shorewood Glen, an active adult community, which is now in the second year of working with students at Walnut Trails Elementary School. And the program keeps expanding and growing.

What started as a couple of women wanting to give back to their community, and to children in particular, has grown into a crew of a dozen volunteers. And more are joining for

Build-a-Bike event supports kids in need

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Troy-Shorewood Elementary fourth-grader Peter Ramos’ eyes beamed with a wide smile Saturday afternoon as he tested his newly constructed bicycle around the Troy Fire Protection District Station 2.

With the help of Shorewood deputy chief Jason Barten and officer Ryan Schloessner, the 10-year-old constructed the bicycle from scratch.

“I’m really excited,” said Peter, whose favorite part was installing the wheels. “It was good working with the officers.”

Peter was one of 30 children chosen from around Will and Grundy counties to participate in the second annual area Build-A-Bike event, hosted by Golden State Foods Foundation and supported by McDonald’s restaurants, Shorewood police and the Troy Fire Protection District.

While it’s the Golden State Foods Foundation’s third time holding the event nationwide, it’s the second-straight year the organization teamed up with local McDonald’s restaurants to

“It was a huge success last year,” said John Carnagio, who owns and operates McDonald’s restaurants in Channahon and Minooka. “Some of these kids have never even had a bicycle or been able to get on a bike.”

The kids get to build their own bikes with the help of volunteers. They also get fitted with helmets.

Nick Kory, another owner who operates McDonald’s restaurants in Shorewood, Lockport, Joliet and Plainfield, said the 30 children are nominated or chosen based on needs, whether through a community resource officer, the child’s teacher or searching through police records for children who may have lost one or both parents.

Peter and his family lost everything Easter Sunday to a house fire. So he said he felt very happy to get the bike. It also helped that Saturday was his birthday.

“Peter is happy and smiling.

This is the best birthday gift,” said his mother, Julie Ramos. “I thank God for everything. The people putting this together are amazing.”

Shorewood resident Catherine Donohue said her daughter, MaryGrace Donohue, was chosen because the family is new to the area and the school thought the event would help MaryGrace get acquainted to the community.

“She has been looking forward to this for weeks,” Donohue said. “She’s absolutely thrilled. This is truly a wonderful thing, McDonald’s, [Golden State Foods] and officers and firefighters doing this.”

Troy firefighter Rusty Kamp helped build a bike for a child Saturday, and said the event helps connect with the community.

“It’s good to get back with the kids and good to show that firefighters and officers are there for them,” Kamp said.

It’s the fourth year the township has awarded Plainfield Township Youth Excellence Scholarships to two current or graduating high school students living in Plainfield Township.

PLAINFIELD – Cardholders at the Plainfield Public Library now can take free preparation courses for the ACT, SAT, GRE and other professional development, technology skills and personal enrichment courses.

The program, which started May 1, allows Plainfield Public Library cardholders in good standing to access six-weeklong online courses taught by expert instructors. Ed2Go, an organization that builds online courses, designed the library courses.

GERMAINE D. BOST Germaine D. “Gerry” Bost (nee: Rheaume), age 93, of Lockport, passed away Friday, May 15, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Canada, moving to the United States in 1926, and resided in Chicago, Evanston and living in Lockport for the past 32 years.

Gerry worked her entire life, retiring in 1983.

Member of St. Dennis Church, Lockport Altar and Rosary Society and was also a greeter at church for many years. She was past-president of the PTA at St. Mary’s School in Evanston. An avid Cubs fan; she enjoyed baking Christmas cookies, playing cards, but most of all she cherished her time with her family.

Preceded in death by her parents, Odilon and Mary Ann (Dusablon) Rheaume; son-in-law, Lester Dufault; a brother, Roland Rheaume; and her sisters, Jeanne (Fred) Power and Jacqueline Constantine.

Survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Melvin; five loving children, Susan (Joe Reposh) Dufault of Lockport, Barbara (Leroy) Steffes of Lockport, Patrick (Janice) Bost of AZ, James Bost of Lockport and Andrew (Barbara) Bost of Hoffman Estates; 10 adored grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, James Constantine; sister-in-law, Ricky Rheaume; and her cherished friend Mary Kay Tierney. The teens were arrested Saturday and later released to their parents or guardians. They were charged as juveniles.

CALUMET CITY – An 18-year-old high school student returning from prom is among two people killed in an early Saturday morning crash in the Chicago south suburbs.

Aaron Dunigan of Calumet City was on his way home Saturday when the vehicle he was a passenger in collided head-on with another driven by 56-year-old Juan Rivera in the south suburb.

The Calumet City man also was killed.

The Times of Northwest Indiana reported police said 18-year-old David Peden of Calumet City was driving the car Dunigan was a passenger in and has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs.

CHICAGO – The former head of the Chicago Transit Authority Board has been named Chicago’s new chief financial officer.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel named Carole Brown to the post on Friday. She replaces Lois Scott, who announced earlier this month that she’ll step down this week.

Brown takes over as the city is facing serious financial problems, including a multibillion-dollar unfunded pension liability.

Emanuel said she brings to the job decades of financial expertise and a reputation as a “tough but honest financial manager.”

Brown is a senior investment banker at Barclays. She’s a grad-

Springfield airport to use $1.85M grant for 2nd jet bridge

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Springfield’s Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport plans to use a federal grant to add a second passenger jet bridge.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reported the airport received a $1.85 million grant.

Currently, passengers have to use an external ramp to board aircraft if the existing jet bridge is being used for another plane.

Airport officials said the second bridge could be in use by the end of the year.

Airport Executive Director Mark Hanna says passengers will particularly appreciate the new bridge during winter months.

He says: “We’re hoping to have it done as a holiday gift to the community.”

Her sense of humor was unparalleled, and her loved ones will always be able to look back fondly at in numerous moments and conversations shared with her.

Tracey was an avid collector, always seeking out treasures with her partner-in-crime Kaylee Ann, at the local antique stores, junk stores, and garage sales. Working as a CNA for 20 years, Tracey thrived at taking care of others.

She always put everyone else’s needs before hers, and that carried over into her work, making it more of a passion than a job. She spent much of her time outside, enjoying life’s simple pleasures while listening to some good old tunes, feeding her birdie friends, tending to her flowers and gardening, and spending time talking and being

with the ones she loved.

Tracey’s spirit and passion will live on through her family and friends. They will find peace knowing that she has been reunited with her mother and husband, whom she loved and missed so dearly.

SPRINGFIELD – A push from one Illinois lawmaker to reopen a super-maximum security state prison doesn’t appear to be gaining traction as the state continues to deal with an overcrowded correctional system.

Tamms prison in southern Illinois remains closed after former Gov. Pat Quinn shut it and dozens of other state facilities to slash the budget. Meanwhile, the state’s inmate population is at around 48,000 in prisons intended to hold 32,000.

NATION BRIEFS Police: 9 dead in shooting with two vials of the prescription heroin antidote naloxone, all biker gang members WACO, Texas – Authorities said the nine people killed in a shootout at a Central Texas restaurant were all members of rival biker gangs that had gathered for a meeting.

Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said 18 other gang members were taken to hospitals Sunday for injuries suffered in the violence at a Twin Peaks restaurant shortly after noon.

Swanton said the gangs had arranged to meet to discuss differences when a fistfight began and quickly escalated to include knives and firearms. He said there were “hundreds” of gang members and a small number of other patrons in the restaurant.

Swanton said as many as five rival gangs attended the gathering. Past tensions among the groups have focused on turf and recruitment efforts, he said.

Authorities were investigating the scene and questioning witnesses Sunday evening.

States help get heroin antidote to regular folks

BUFFALO, N.Y. – At the front of a classroom, a health worker demonstrates “the nod” — a jerk of the head forward and then quickly back – a telltale sign of heroin use, though not necessarily of an overdose.

After an hour or so of instruction that includes spotting signs of a life-threatening overdose, the class of ordinary people – couples, co-workers, parents, retirees and others – leaves

better known by its brand name, Narcan.

It’s part of an effort to make naloxone available to more people than just police, paramedics and the addicts themselves.

Because of naloxone’s effectiveness in nearly instantaneously bringing overdose victims back from near-death, New York, Illinois and a handful of other states are making the lifesaving drug available to virtually anyone willing to be trained to use it, hoping to better the odds it will be there when needed.

U.S. gasoline prices rise 22 cents a gallon

CAMARILLO, Calif. – The average national price of a regular gallon of gasoline has jumped 22 cents in the past three weeks to $2.80.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that higher crude prices caused by a weaker U.S. dollar and strong gasoline demand drove the increase.

But she said the price was 93 cents lower than a year ago.

The average national price for midgrade was $3, and premium was $3.16. Diesel was $2.97.

In a survey of cities in the Lower 48 states, Los Angeles had the highest-priced gasoline at $3.95 a gallon. Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had the lowest at $2.32.

Lundberg said gasoline price hikes will likely slow or stop because of an expected increase in supplies.

Amtrak could pay no more than $200M to crash victims

by Congress. But that may be too low to cover the costs of the eight lives lost and more than 200 people injured in last week’s derailment in Philadelphia.

That payout cap for a single passenger rail incident was part of a late effort in 1997 to pass a law that would rescue Amtrak from financial ruin and help it one day become independent.

Adjusted for inflation, which the law does not consider, that amount would be just under $300 million now.

And Amtrak is still far from independent.

An Associated Press review of past cases found that Amtrak never before has been liable for a $200 million payout for a single passenger rail incident. The Philadelphia crash could be the first time the liability ceiling – designed specifically for Amtrak – actually

would apply to the railroad.

It’s not known how high the costs of victims’ deaths and injuries from Tuesday’s crash will run.

The train, which left Washington headed to New York, was moving at more than twice the speed allowed on a curve when it derailed not long after it stopped at Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station. Investigators haven’t determined why the train was traveling so fast.

An Amtrak employee Friday filed the first lawsuit, asking for more than $150,000 in damages. Amtrak workers are not limited by the $200 million cap because it only applies to passengers.

“I don’t think Amtrak has ever faced a situation like this, and since they own the Northeast Corridor, they’re 100 percent on the hook,” said Frank Wilner, author of the book, “Amtrak: Past, Present, Future.”

Using past passenger rail accidents as a guide, some lawyers expect damages from the crash to be similar to a 2008 accident in Los Ange-

les, which resulted in a $200 million payout to victims. In that crash, the train’s engineer was texting and didn’t stop at a red signal when the train collided head-on with a freight train, killing 25 people and injuring more than 100.

The money was paid to victims by Metrolink, which provides commuter rail service in Southern California, and Veolia Environment, a French company that operated the rail service at the time.

A judge divided the $200 million among the victims, with sums between $12,000 and $9 million. In some cases, lawyers said the amounts were far less than the projected costs of medical care needed as a result of the crash.

Paul Kiesel, a Los Angeles attorney who represented victims from the 2008 crash, said $200 million “can be just a drop in a bucket to compensate people who are the victims of passenger rail collisions in America.”

But Kiesel said he is not aware of another passenger rail incident in which the $200 million cap has been a factor.

By DAVID A. LIEB The Associated Press JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Alarmed about cities trying to outlaw plastic bags, the director of the Missouri Grocers Association decided to do something about it. So Dan Shaul turned to his state legislator – himself – and guided a bill to passage barring local governments from banning the bags.

Shaul’s dual role in state government and business may be a bit out of the norm. Yet his actions are not. In capitols across the country, businesses increasingly are using their clout to back laws prohibiting cities and counties from doing things that might affect their ability to make money.

In the past five years, about a dozen states have enacted laws barring local governments from requiring businesses to provide paid sick leave to employees. The number of states banning local minimum wages has grown to 15. And while oil-rich states such as Texas and Oklahoma are pursuing bills banning local restrictions on drilling, other states where agriculture is big business have been banning local limitations on the types of seeds sown for crops.

It seems no issue is too small for businesses to take to

capitol halls.

Wisconsin has banned local bans on sugary drinks. Arizona and Florida have barred local governments from forbidding toys in fast-food meals.

And Utah has barred cities from requiring bicyclists to be served in drive-thru lanes.

In each case, states have stepped in after city officials somewhere in the nation proposed local policies that business leaders didn’t like.

Businesses have warned lawmakers that a potential patchwork of local regulations could be bad for the economy.

“We need to give companies and businesses some predictability and some consistency in their operations so that they can grow,” said Shaul, a freshman Republican representative from the St. Louis suburb of Imperial, whose anti-bag ban measure is pending before Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

Environmental activists in Columbia, who pushed for the ban on single-use plastic bags at grocery stores, were jolted by the state intervention.

“I was horrified, just really demoralized,” when the legislation passed, said Sierra Club member Jan Dye. “They just want to remove local control.”

The Missouri bill goes

beyond plastic bags. It also would also prohibit local governments from requiring businesses to provide employees paid sick leave, vacation or health, disability and retirement benefits. And it would block cities and counties from adopting their own “living wage” requirements.

States have pre-empted some local policies for decades.

A movement to restrict local gun ordinances began in 1971, for example, and has been enacted as law in 45 states, according to the National Rifle Association. State lawmakers in Oklahoma and Michigan this year are pushing similar measures for knives.

Some experts trace a rise in states pre-empting local ordinances to the 2010 elections, when Republicans won control of 25 legislatures and 29 governors’ offices. Republicans have expanded their power since then and now hold complete control of three times as many legislatures and governors’ offices as Democrats.

In some cases, those new GOP officeholders have received generous financial support from business interests.

Shaul, for example, got about one-quarter of his contributions for his 2014 campaign from people and organizations affiliated with the food industry.

Gov. Jay Nixon praised the bill as a “significant piece of legislation – one that will have a lot of effects for a lot of years.” He has not yet signed the legislation.

Both the transfer and municipal court bills “were spurred out of concerns surrounding the events in Ferguson,” said House Speaker Todd Richardson, R-Poplar Bluff.

“For anybody to say we didn’t address those issues or didn’t look at them, I just flatly disagree,” Richardson said.

Some Democratic senators said the transfer measure, which allows students to transfer within their districts and expands charter and virtual school options, would help address systemic education issues in poor minority communities.

It’s also an issue lawmakers have grappled with for years; Nixon vetoed a different solution last year.

But overall, Democratic lawmakers said they were disappointed in the dearth of solutions during this session.

“It’s been inadequate to say the least,” said Legislative Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Brandon Ellington, D-Kansas City.

Among the measures that failed were ones mandating police wear body cameras – Wilson was not wearing one when Brown was shot – and another requiring unpaid suspension if an officer shoots an unarmed person who’s more than 20 feet away.

States saying ‘no’ to cities’ regulation of businesses

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri’s legislative session began with hundreds of protesters shutting down the Senate, demanding changes to state law in response to the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer.

It ended Friday with the Senate again shut down – this time because of its own partisan divisions – and without action on a Ferguson-inspired bill that would have rewritten the laws police using deadly force.

All told, more than 60 Ferguson-related measures were introduced this session. Though a measure, propelled by concerns in Ferguson, passed limiting the powers and revenues of municipal courts, as did one rewriting the state’s student transfer laws that some said would aid families in the St. Louis suburb, some legislators said they had failed to pass anything meaningful in response to Brown’s death.

“We don’t have one piece of legislation that anyone here in this body can go home and say, ‘Hey, we did this for Ferguson,’ ” Rep. Clem Smith, D-Velda Village Hills, said. “As it was this summer ... it still is today.

Nothing has changed.”

Brown, a black 18-yearold, was fatally shot Aug. 9 by white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson – an event that touched off widespread protests in the St. Louis area and around the country. But a grand jury declined to charge Wilson and a U.S. Justice Department report determined Wilson acted in self-defense.

Politicians weigh in on Iraq War White House hopefuls conclude decision was a mistake

By CONNIE CASS The Associated Press WASHINGTON – A dozen years later, American politics has reached a rough consensus about the Iraq War: It was a mistake.

Politicians hoping to be president rarely run ahead of public opinion. So it’s a revealing moment when the major contenders for president in both parties find it best to say that 4,491 Americans and countless Iraqis lost their lives in a war that shouldn’t have been waged.

Many people have been saying that for years. Polls show most of the public has judged the war a failure by now. Over time, more and more GOP politicians have allowed that the absence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq undermined Republican President George W. Bush’s rationale for the 2003 invasion.

It hasn’t been an easy evolution for those such as Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, who voted for the war in 2002 while serving in Congress. That vote, and her refusal to fully disavow it, cost her during her 2008 primary loss to Barack Obama, who wasn’t in the Senate in 2002 but had opposed the war.

In her memoir last year, Clinton wrote that she had voted based on the information available at the time, but “I got it wrong. Plain and simple.”

What might seem a hard truth for a nation to acknowledge has become the safest thing for an American politician to say – even Bush’s brother.

The fact that Jeb Bush, a likely candidate for the Republican nomination in 2016, was pressured this past week into rejecting, in hindsight, his brother’s war “is an indication that the received wisdom, that which we work from right now, is that this was a mistake,” said Evan Cornog, a historian and dean of the Hofstra University school of communication.

Santorum didn’t always see the war that way. He voted for the invasion as a senator and continued to support if for years. Last week, he mocked Jeb Bush’s reluctance to give what now seems the obvious answer when he initially was asked to reconsider the war in light of what’s known today. “I don’t know how that was a hard question,” Santorum said.

It’s an easier question for presidential hopefuls who aren’t bound by family ties or their own congressional vote for the war, who have the luxury of judging it in hindsight, knowing full well the terrible price Americans paid and the continuing bloodshed in Iraq today.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz weren’t in Congress in 2002 and so didn’t have to make a real-time decision with imperfect knowledge. Neither was New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie or Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who served an earlier stint in Congress.

All these Republicans said last week that, in hindsight, they would not have invaded Iraq with what’s now known about the faulty intelligence that wrongly indicated Saddam Hussein had stockpiled weapons of mass destruction.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, in an interview Sun-

day on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” summed up that sentiment: “Knowing what we know now, I think it’s safe for many of us, myself included, to say, we probably wouldn’t have taken” that approach.

Rubio, in a long exchange on “Fox News Sunday,” tried to navigate the Iraq shoals once again, making a glasshalf-full case that although the war was based on mistaken intelligence, the world still is better off with Saddam gone.

Those politicians didn’t go as far, however, as war critics such as Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a declared Republican candidate who says it would have been a mistake even if Saddam were hiding such weapons. Paul says Saddam was serving as a counterbalance to Iran and removing him from power led to much of the turmoil now rocking the Middle East.

Former President George W. Bush and his vice president, Dick Cheney, still maintain that ousting a brutal and unpredictable dictator made the world safer.

In his 2010 memoir, “Decision Points,” Bush said he got a “sickening feeling” every time he thought about the failure to find weapons of mass destruction and he knew that would “transform public perception of the war.”

But he stands by his decision.

The war remains a painful topic politicians must approach with some care.

Jeb Bush, explaining his reluctance to clarify his position on the war’s start, said “going back in time and talking about hypotheticals,” the would-haves and the should-haves, does a disservice to the families of soldiers who gave their lives.

Cornog, the historian, said even if a majority of Americans have turned their backs on the war, many never will.

“I think if I had lost a loved one in that war I would be unwilling to say it was a futile effort or destructive of America’s security,” he said.

“How we interpret it depends on how we are invested in the question at hand.”

When he finished withdrawing U.S. troops in December 2011, Obama predicted a stable, self-reliant Iraqi government would take hold. Instead, turmoil and terrorism overtook Iraq and American leaders and wouldbe presidents are struggling with what to do next. The U.S. has 3,040 troops in Iraq as trainers and advisers and to provide security for American personnel and equipment.

For the most part, the public and the military – like the politicians – are focused less on decisions of the past than on the events of today and how to stop the Islamic State militants who have overrun a swath of Iraq and inspired terrorist attacks in the West.

“The greater amount of angst in the military is from seeing the manifest positive results of the surge in 2007 and 2008 go to waste by misguided policies in the aftermath,” said retired U.S. Army Col. Peter Monsoor, a top assistant to Gen. David Petraeus in Baghdad during that increase of U.S. troops in Iraq.

“Those mistakes were huge and compounded the original error of going into Iraq in the first place,” said Monsoor, now a professor of military history at Ohio State University.

NATION/WORLD BRIEFS Saudi-led coalition starts up airstrikes in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen – Saudi-led coalition airstrikes targeting Shiite rebels resumed early Monday in the southern port city of Aden after a five-day truce came to a close following talks on the wartorn country’s future that were boycotted by the rebels.

Coalition airstrikes hit rebel positions and tanks in several neighborhoods of Aden after the cease-fire expired late Sunday night, Yemeni security officials said.

The cease-fire hadn’t halted all fighting in Yemen between the Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, and government forces loyal to exiled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

Earlier Sunday, hundreds of Yemeni politicians and tribal leaders gathered in Saudi Arabia for three days of talks on Yemen’s future, but the Houthis refused to participate.

Military leaders gather to talk amphibious skills

HONOLULU – Amphibious military capabilities are on the agenda as the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy host defense leaders from around the Pacific in Hawaii this week.

The first-of-its kind meeting comes as territorial disputes over islands are growing more heated in the region.

U.S. treaty allies Japan and the Philippines are expected to attend along with U.S. partners like Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. Altogether, 23 nations will join the meeting.

China wasn’t invited, even though it has one of the region’s fastest-growing militaries. A U.S. law restricting the types of military exercises the U.S. and China may engage in together prevented China’s inclusion, Marine Corps Col. Nathan Nastase said.

Organizers aim to discuss how the militaries may develop amphibious capabilities and operate together, Nastase said.

They hope to find out what each country’s amphibious needs are and learn how each nation might be able to help others.

Dick Goss Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic knows a little something about winning baseball.

In an area that boasts numerous quality teams every spring, you always could count on Minooka being among them.

This season is different.

Make that, was different. The Indians started 3-10. However, Minooka is 14-3 over its last 17 games for a 17-13 overall mark. Plainfield North leads the Southwest Prairie Conference race at 14-4, and Minooka is right on its heels at 13-5.

Crazy at it once sounded, the Indians have a shot at a conference title.

Why the turnaround?

“I really don’t know,” Petrovic said Saturday when his Indians were at Joliet West in a game that was stopped because of wet field conditions after four innings and thus did not count. “I wish I knew what happened.

Then I could use it in future years.”

Petrovic said it perhaps is “the combination of a lot of little pieces. The kids’ attitude changed, and maybe our team chemistry got better. Of course, winning takes care of the chemistry a lot.

“Not only do we have the right people in the right places now, but we’re starting to peak as a team. That all plays into it.”

Senior second baseman Jake Null said the turnaround “probably came from a lot of things. We tried to turn our attitude around first, and I think we did. ... We’re playing with more confidence than we did earlier.”

The Indians did not rip the cover off the ball in the few innings that were played Saturday, but their lineup somehow had a better feel to it than it did earlier in the season. I mentioned that to Petrovic, and he responded: “You’re right, our lineup is better, and Cristian [Sanchez] is not here. You slide him into the 3-hole and move everyone else down one, and it’s that much better. We’ve made a lot

He also would have been one of Minooka’s top pitchers, probably the staff ace, had he not had the injury.

“We haven’t seen Joe throw at all since he had the

surgery,” Petrovic said. “We may look at him in our next series [this week’s SPC threegame finale against Romeoville]. But he doesn’t have the endurance now to pitch many innings. One or two innings might be the extent of it.”

Petrovic said he and pitching coach Jim Lamping are sure of right-hander Miguel Ruiz being the Indians’ No. 1 pitcher heading into the postseason. Otherwise, he said, “We have a few decisions to make.

“Other than facing Provi-

dence twice early on and not getting much support, Miguel has been very good. He clearly is our No. 1 now.”

Aside from the obvious reason of a good local rivalry being renewed, the Minooka at West game was interesting from another standpoint. The two will meet May 28 in the second semifinal of the Class 4A Joliet West Regional.

West (16-10) is the No. 2 seed behind Bradley, and Minooka is No. 3. The tournament will open May 25 with No. 5 Joliet Central visiting No. 4 Plainfield South. That winner will face Bradley in the May 27 semifinal.

Unlike many regionals, there is no clear-cut favorite here. You can make a legitimate case for anyone winning it.

If West is to be the survivor, the Tigers will need to continue getting good pitching from the likes of Robert Talarico, Nick Marconi and others, and they need to find a little more offense.

“We have several pitchers who have been getting their opportunities and are making the most of it,” West coach John Karczewski said. “We’ve been walking a few too many guys lately, but we’ll work on that.

“What has been costing us

the last two weeks, though, is we’re not executing offensively.”

Karczewski said the bottom of the order has not been producing, and he has been switching players in those 7-8-9 spots in the order, giving everyone an opportunity.

Saturday provided an example. The Tigers had runners on first and third with nobody out in the second inning and did not score as the next three hitters, the bottom three in the lineup, all struck out.

“You shorten up and make contact, and you’ll probably get a run, anyway,” Karczewski said.

But with a lineup that leads off with Cody Grosse and has Alex Davis, Griffin McGuire, Talarico, Blake Tomac and Josh Pesavento following, the potential is there to score some runs. If the Tigers can get that part of the game in sync, watch out.

As with everyone else in the regional field – certainly including Minooka – a case can be made for West getting through and playing in the sectional at Illinois Wesleyan.

It’s going to be interesting.

Before the two biggest tournaments of the year, the Flyers prepared no differently from any other match in the season.

On the Wednesday leading up to the MIVA quarterfinal against Lindenwood, the Flyers started to fill the media room at 2:30 p.m. Once everyone arrived, Denson started the PowerPoint presentation.

For the next 45 minutes, the players learned everything about Lindenwood.

needed to do to combat the opponent’s strengths. He spoke about each player in a specific position, then Denson would show highlight footage of that player.

The thoroughness of the scouting report was notable.

More surprising was the response from the team.

When the Flyers began crowding in, each one was smiling and laughing. Within 10 minutes of the first slide show, the room was dead silent.

Having 23 college men sit

in silence for more than 30 minutes is a significant accomplishment. And the Flyers conducted two video sessions – ranging up to an hour long – for each opponent they faced throughout the season.

That’s the amount of respect the Flyers had for their coaches. Enough respect to trust and fully buy into the coaches’ system.

Carthy, Denson and Johnwick helped mentor Lewis to a 27-4 record, and the team never was ranked below fifth in the nation after jumping from its preseason No. 7 ranking.

Each of the coaches plays a different role, but an equally important role.

When asked to talk about his seniors after the championship game, Friend did not talk about how many kills they got or digs they made. He always sees a bigger picture.

“You talk about leaving it better than when you started it,” Friend said. “These guys have made a lasting impact, not only as volleyball players but as young male student-athletes. I think that my seniors’ collective GPA is over a 3.4.

In college sports, teaching athletes how to be great people sometimes gets lost in the midst of things, but Friend not only taught his Flyers how to play volleyball, he showed them how to be good men.

An example of this hit close to home for the team.

On Nov. 25, 2014, coach Denson’s father, Robert Denson, died at age 57 after a very short illness.

“The loss was devastating to the Denson family and the Bridgeview Fire Department,” said John Planek, Lewis’ director of athletics. “He was described as a ‘real hero’ to the people of Bridgeview.

ROMEOVILLE – The Lewis men’s volleyball team recently finished one of the most successful seasons in program history.

The Flyers finished second at the NCAA tournament and had a nation-high five All-Americans, six All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association players and 16 All-MIVA academic honorees on the roster.

On top of those accomplishments and along with being named the MIVA coach of the year, Dan Friend was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year and Matt McCarthy the AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year.

If someone were to comp a r e w h a t L e w i s a c c o mplished to what was expected in preseason – the Flyers were ranked seventh in the nation – one might think the dominating season came out of nowhere. But elements such as hard work and passion played huge parts in helping the Flyers reach the level of volleyball they played.

Another major factor was the coaches – Friend and assistants McCarthy, Marc Denson and Bryan Johnwick.

“Our coaches took a rag-tag bunch of guys that weren’t really highly recruited all of the time, brought us all together and it ended up working really well,” senior outside hitter Greg Petty said.

Alyssa Callans pitched a six-hitter to get the victory in Game 1. She struck out three and walked nobody. Brenna Garland had a hit and drove in two runs.

In Game 2, Josie Henderson hit a pair of two-run homers, and Reilly Jo Swanson had three hits and an RBI.

We had many phone calls, and I said all I needed was a chance to come here, and I knew I would be able to make an impact in the gym.

Buescher rallies to win in Iowa

By LUKE MEREDITH The Associated Press NEWTON, Iowa – Chris Buescher needed someone to screw up.

Two drivers involved in a scary incident Saturday teamed up for another crash that gave Buescher the break he was looking for.

Buescher pulled away on a restart in a green-whitecheckered finish Sunday to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Iowa Speedway.

Buescher raced to his first victory of the season and gave Roush-Fenway Racing its fifth Iowa win in 11 starts.

It also put Buescher atop the points standings by eight points over Ty Dillon.

“I’m not sure what it is about this place that the Roush cars seem to run so well at. But this is a big step for us,” Buescher said.

Chase Elliott appeared poised for an easy win, but a late caution caused when Jamie Dick and Ross Chastain wrecked instead forced overtime.

Buescher was the beneficiary. He took advantage with a perfectly executed restart – aided greatly by a push from teammate Bubba Wallace.

“When that happened, I knew we had a great shot on the restart,” Buescher said.

Elliott finished second after leading a race-high 114 laps. Erik Jones was third, followed by Brian Scott and

Ryan Blaney.

As the first Xfinity event of the year that didn’t share a track with a Sprint Cup race, Iowa gave series regulars a chance to run without being overshadowed by the sport’s more established stars.

With the day to itself, NASCAR’s second-tier series put on one of its best shows of the year.

Drew Herring qualified the No. 20 car first Saturday while Jones backed up Kyle Busch at the Sprint Cup All-Star race in Charlotte.

But the driver switch forced Jones to start at the rear of the field.

Buescher grabbed an early lead, only to watch Elliott pass him for an advantage he kept for a third of the race.

These powerhouse teams both entered the series with prolonged momentum and plenty of rest: The Hawks never trailed in their second-round series sweep of Minnesota while reaching their third straight conference finals, while Anaheim steamrolled through the Pacific Division bracket with just one overtime defeat.

The clubs matched strengths from the opening minutes, with Ducks center Ryan Kesler chasing Hawks captain Jonathan Toews in a continuation of their long-running rivalry.

After Lindholm put Anaheim ahead in the first period, Palmieri made it 2-0 early in the second when he converted a pass from Thompson and slid through the slot on his back in celebration.

Dixon claims pole position, breaks up Penske monopoly The ASSOCIATED PRESS INDIANAPOLIS – One minute, Scott Dixon thought the numbers were a mistake.

The next, he was sitting on the Indianapolis 500 pole.

On one of the strangest qualifying days in Indy history, Dixon overcame rules changes, a revised schedule, the threat of rain and Team Penske’s powerful four-car lineup to earn his second Indy pole with a four-lap average of 226.760 mph.

Will Power and Simon Pagenaud, who drive for Roger Penske, will start second and third Sunday after going 226.350 and 226.145. Penske had won eight straight poles.

“I was definitely a little shocked with the first number when I saw it,” Dixon said.

Heading into Sunday, the Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver thought his No. 9 car was good enough to end the Penske monopoly.

But when Ed Carpenter’s primary car went airborne in the morning practice, the third Chevrolet car to do that this week, team owners, engine manufacturers and series officials huddled in Gasoline Alley to find a solution.

They settled on removing the extra horsepower for qualifying and instructed all teams to use race setups, sending 34 drivers trying to make the Sunday race scrambling.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Blackhawks headed into the Western Conference finals with a wealth of playoff experience and ample rest.

None of it made much difference when they struggled to find a way past Frederik Andersen and the surging Anaheim Ducks.

Hampus Lindholm, Nate Thompson and Jakob Silfverberg each had a goal and an assist, and the Ducks beat the Blackhawks, 4-1, in the opener Sunday.

Brad Richards scored late in the second period and Corey Crawford stopped 23 shots for the Hawks, who hadn’t lost since April 23. The Hawks’ struggles in their first game in 10 days were encapsulated when Andersen made a jaw-dropping stick save against Patrick Kane, deflecting the Hawks star’s shot over an achingly open net.

The Blackhawks capitalized on just one scoring chance while making just enough mistakes to fall behind and stay there. The Hawks didn’t play poorly, but still got reminded

just how much work will be necessary to hold off the hungry Ducks and to get back to the Stanley Cup finals for the third time in six years.

“Sometimes you play these first games, and it is kind of a feeling-out process where you don’t really know what to expect,” Kane said. “I don’t want to say we came in and wanted to do that, but I think we’ll have a better effort come next game.”

Game 2 is Tuesday night in Anaheim.

Andersen, who made 32 saves, had to be stellar under a heavy barrage of high-quality shots from the Hawks, who had won five straight postseason games heading into their third straight conference finals.

Kane scored seven goals in the first two rounds, but could only shake his head on the bench after Andersen’s phenomenal stick save in the first period.

“He’s a battler, and you saw that on numerous saves he had tonight where it seemed like we had a good chance to score and he gets a leg or a stick on it,” Kane said. “We knew that was the scouting report on him.

Garcia, Ramirez each drive in two runs as White Sox beat A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. – Jeff Samardzija spent the first two days of the series catching up with old friends. He spent the last day making trouble for them.

Avisal Garcia hit a two-run homer, Alexei Ramirez had two hits and two RBIs, and Samardzija pitched eight strong innings to help the White Sox beat the Athletics, 7-3, Sunday for their first series sweep in Oakland in 18 years.

“We haven’t had too many good trips here,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

“The first thing is we got good pitching.

We counted on that and those guys did it.”

Jose Abreu and Gordon Beckham also drove in runs for the Sox, who won their sixth straight and reached .500 for the first time this season.

“Being .500 is important,” Samardzija said. “You want to be around .500 come summer and fall, knowing you’re in the hunt.”

Max Muncy hit his first major league home run, a two-run shot in the fourth, as the A’s lost their fourth straight and fell to 1-12 in day games.

Samardzija (3-2) allowed three runs and eight hits. He walked three and struck out five in his return to Oakland, where he made 16 starts for the A’s last year.

“I have a lot of respect for that team,” Samardzija said. “I’ve never seen a team who played so hard, day in and day out. I loved being part of that.”

The A’s committed four errors, increasing their major-league lead to 42. They

Pirates stop four-game slide with shutout of Cubs

CHICAGO – The Pittsburgh Pirates needed another strong outing from their most consistent starter, and A.J. Burnett stepped up again.

Burnett worked around five walks while pitching seven innings in his third consecutive win, and the Pirates stopped a four-game losing streak by cooling off the Cubs with a 3-0 victory on Sunday.

Burnett (3-1) allowed three hits and struck out seven while handing Jake Arrieta his first loss in six career starts against Pittsburgh. He has allowed two runs or less in each of his eight starts this year after losing 18 games with Philadelphia last season.

“Just trying to keep the ball down. I mean, that’s it,” Burnett said.

The Cubs had won six in a row and seven of nine. Rookie third baseman Kris Bryant was pulled after four innings, and the team said he was dehydrated.

“How can I possibly be upset right now?” manager Joe Maddon said. “It’s impossible. We played well again today.”

Arrieta (4-4) also pitched seven innings, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. He began the day with a 4-0 record and a 2.70 ERA in his career against Pittsburgh.

Louis Nizer, a noted trial lawyer who died in 1994, said, “I know of no higher fortitude than stubbornness in the face of overwhelming odds.”

At the bridge table, you hope not to face overwhelming odds against making your contract. (If you do, presumably partner overbid!) But it helps to know some common odds.

If you are missing five trumps, the a priori odds of a 3-2 split are 67.8 percent, and 28.3 percent for 4-1. It is nice to find a line of play that will accommodate a 4-1 split, but if while trying to do that, you go down when the trumps are 3-2 all along, you will look pretty silly.

In this deal, should South, in four spades, worry about 4-1 trumps?

West starts off with two high hearts.

The original declarer ruffed the second trick, played a spade to dummy’s king, and returned a spade to his jack. However, West won with the queen and led another heart, forcing South to ruff with his penultimate trump. Declarer crossed to the dummy with a diamond and ran the club 10, but West won that trick and led his heart 10 to kill the contract.

South would have been making the winning play if East had queenfourth of trumps, but declarer went down although trumps were 3-2.

South should have led a diamond to the king at trick three, then taken the club finesse. West would have won and played a third high heart, but declarer could have ruffed, drawn two rounds of trumps, and played on clubs to get home.

When the defenders threaten to make you ruff a lot, establish your side suit first.

Here are a few additional suggestions I give to my patients who have trouble with eye drops: • If you have a strong blink reflex, lie flat on your back. Put a drop outside the lid of your closed eye and near your nose. Then open your eye, tilt your head slightly, and the drop will roll into the eye.

• If your hands are shaky, try approaching your eye from the side.

That way, you can rest your hand on your face to help steady your hand. You can also try putting a wrist weight of 1 to 2 pounds on the hand you’re using. The weight will reduce mild shaking.

If you still have trouble inserting the eye drops yourself, see if someone you live and/ or work with can help. If you tilt your head back and pull down the lower lid to form the pouch, the other person should have no trouble aiming the drop of artificial tears right onto your eye. It’s usually easier for another person to aim accurately than for you to do so.

Finally, you can purchase an assistive device from a medical supply store to help you put in eye drops.

One such device holds the eyelid open and helps direct the drops into the eye.

Most people can learn how to administer their eye drops successfully.

You should be able to do so, too.

Dear Doctor K: I have dry eye syndrome.

My doctor prescribed artificial tears, but I can’t manage to get the drops into my eyes. Any advice?

Dear Reader: Dry eye syndrome occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough tears.

Tears moisten, protect and cleanse our eyes.

Without enough tears, your eyes may burn, itch, or feel like there is something gritty in them.

Dry eye syndrome can also increase your sensitivity to light and cause excessive tears.

Dry eye syndrome is often effectively treated with artificial tears.

Available over the counter, they mimic the composition of natural tears.

Of course, they work only if you can get them into your eyes. Like you, many people need to learn how to do it.

Following is the correct way to put in eye drops. (I’ve put photos of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

(1) Wash your hands.

(2) Tilt your head back while standing, sitting or lying down.

With your index finger, pull your lower eyelid gently downward. This causes your lower eyelid to form a pocket.

(3) Let the drop fall into the pocket without touching the bottle to your eye or eyelid. If the tip of the bottle touches your eye or eyelid, it can spread germs.

(4) Slowly let go of the lower lid.

(5) Close your eyes, but try not to blink, squint or shut them too tightly. Any of these could push the drops out of your eyes.

(6) Wipe unabsorbed drops and tears from the closed lids with a tissue.

Dear Abby: My only sister, “Carolyn,” is getting married in two months. I’m ecstatic for her. She and her girlfriend turned 50 this year, and this is the happiest I have ever seen her. They are perfect together. Carolyn asked me to be her maid of honor and I gladly accepted. I am also decorating for her small wedding and reception.

When I received my wedding invitation last week, I was shocked and saddened.

It was addressed to me and my kids only. My significant other, “Greg” (the kids’ father), and I were married for 22 years and divorced three years ago. We have had some tough times but did reconcile.

Even though we are divorced, we stayed together and never split households.

I have no idea how to tell Greg. I asked Carolyn if excluding Greg had been an oversight, and she said she would just prefer that he not be there. I can respect that, and I don’t want to cause any drama or take anything away from her day.

When you return home, your mind will be alert. Then, have a piece of fruit with some cheese or a boiled egg. This should hold you until dinner.

Water is healthy, and you should be able to drink it in unlimited amounts.

After you have had your snack, get your homework out of the way. If you do, there should be an hour or so in the evening for you to “goof off” before bedtime without feeling guilty.
