PLAINFIELD – Some parents had concerns about how the attendance zone boundary changes for two Plainfield schools would affect their children – and two wanted to find a way to appeal the decision.

In recent weeks, Plainfield School District 202 Board members approved changing the attendance zone boundaries to relieve congestion at Lincoln Elementary School. Next school year, elementary students in the Fieldstone and Stone Bluff subdivisions will attend Lakewood Falls Elementary School.

But a few parents who came to Monday’s board meeting questioned school officials about the academic quality of Lakewood Falls compared to Lincoln, fearing Lakewood Falls had lower test scores.

School officials assured them Lake-

wood Falls was just as good as Lincoln, and told them to visit the school and meet the staff.

One parent, Daniette Cerda, said she noticed looking online Lincoln had better test scores than Lakewood Falls. She said she and her family bought a home in Fieldstone because they wanted their children to attend Lincoln, and then other middle and high schools.

“It’s kind of devastating, in a way, when I spent a whole lot more money on a house, where I could have gone into Lakewood and bought a house for a lot cheaper because we wanted those schools and education was important for us,” Cerda said.

Another parent, Martina Gerlak, was also concerned about the test scores of Lakewood Falls compared to Lincoln.

She also asked if Lakewood Falls was on academic probation.

Glenn Wood, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, said

Lakewood Falls was not under academic probation. Regarding test scores, Superintendent Lane Abrell said there are fallacies and inaccuracies when examining them.

“Is test scores one measure of a school?” Wood said. “I really encourage the families to visit the schools and talk with the teachers and meet with the kids there. I would tell you it’s a great place to be.”

Abrell said the attendance boundary changes to Lakewood Falls and Lincoln will not be the last. He said he understood parents’ frustration but school officials try to make changes based on need and research.

Cerda’s husband, Michael, said they were both still concerned.

“I don’t want my son to go to Lakewood, I want him to stay in Lincoln, that’s just my opinion,” he said. “I hope we can try to fight this and get more people involved.”

Michele A. Evans, 50, returned Judge Dave Carlson’s greetings of “Good morning,” but let her attorney Joel Brodsky do the talking – asking for a hearing to reduce her $1 million bond.

“This is a case where we’re going to have a ‘self-defense’

defense,” Brodsky told Carlson.

At 8:47 p.m. April 16, Michele Evans called police to her home in the 500 block of Bloomfield Drive in Bolingbrook.

Officers found Michele A. David Evans, Evans 55, lying on the kitchen floor, according to Bolingbrook Police Lt. Carter Larry.

Detectives believe Michele

Evans stabbed her husband twice in the chest with a kitchen knife after a disagreement, Larry said. David Evans was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he died at 1:58 a.m. April 17.

The couple had lived in their house for more than 25 years and had two daughters who were not living with them, Larry said. According to police reports, there have been six calls for service there since 2001, including domestic violence, noise complaints and dog complaints.

Third administrator leaving Joliet hospice

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A third top administrator is leaving the Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Operations Vice President Judy Militello Zimmerman is retiring as of May 22, said Interim Chief Executive Officer Duane Krieger.

Krieger took charge after former CEO Rick Kasper left April 14. Militello Zimmerman’s retirement is unrelated to Kasper’s departure, Krieger said Monday.

“The board wanted to go in another direction,” Krieg-

er said of Kasper’s departure.

“Two different things.”

Krieger also is a member of the board of directors at Joliet Area Community Hospice.

He said Militello Zimmerman gave one month’s notice that she planned to retire. Her replacement may await the hiring of a new CEO, he said.

Militello Zimmerman became vice president of operations in 2009, the same year Kasper became CEO. Her retirement follows that of Dr. Ray Orenic, the former medical director, who also left in April. He was replaced by Dr. J.D. Wright.

The hospice board of directors has formed a search committee to find a new CEO and has begun to advertise for the position, Krieger said.

“We will be starting interviews as soon as we get some good candidates,” he said.

Krieger, who is 78, said he has no interest in staying in the position and is hoping a new CEO can be hired by the summer so he can return to retirement. He had been CEO for 16 years and was instrumental in the decision to build the hospice home in Joliet.

It was the first free-standing hospice home in Illinois.

Green Village Program promotes sustainability in Plainfield

LAINFIELD – Tania Hess was taken aback at the maintenance of home landscaping in the United States when she moved in 1987 from South America.

“I was surprised about how in this country, so much money was spent on maintaining lawns, and how big a yard everyone has,” she said. “There are alternatives people can do to be more sustainable.”

Hess is one of several sustainability experts who was scheduled to provide one-on-one help to residents regarding landscape questions and concerns during a Green Village event Monday evening at the library.

Sustainability was a key objective when the village of Plainfield began a partnership with the Plainfield Public Library to promote the Green Village Program.

The program started in 2008 in alignment with the nation’s rising green movement and to meet a “desire to practice environmentally friendly best management practices and to commit to urban sustainability,” according to the village’s website.

“From my point of view, it’s primarily a philosophical belief that we need to do the right thing,” said Jonathan Proulx, a village planner.

Sustainable initiatives

Monday’s program was to provide residents with individual 10-minute sessions with experts on gardening or landscaping issues.

“We’re trying to help people find plants that are low maintenance, plants that do well here and don’t need a lot of irrigation or herbicides,” said Michelle Kelly, one of the experts scheduled to attend.

Kelly is owner of Plainfield-based Upland Design.

Those initiatives include alternatives to popular landscaping staples, such as replacing lawns with yarrow, a feathery, fine plant with fern-like leaves. Plant placement is one of the consistent questions she gets asked by

residents.

“Most people tend to put the wrong pot in the wrong place,” Hess said.

Hess said sometimes people hesitate to plant native grasses because they associate them with weeds. But she said a little research makes clear that many native plants are beautiful and work well with landscapes.

Hess also helps people find alternative uses for waste products, such as creating a self-watering pot that integrates crushed plastic bottles and packing peanuts. When placed at the bottom of a potted plant, they help the plant retain rainwater.

“Being sustainable really is less work if you plan it well,” she said.

Testimony on possible Chicago casino Joliet officials worried about revenue loss

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – A future Chicago casino could generate much-needed revenue and draw crowds to city hotels and restaurants, tourism experts testified Monday during a gambling expansion hearing.

The hearing comes as state legislators stare down a budget deadline and amid fresh concerns about finding new funding sources.

Legislators must try to close a roughly $6 billion gap before May 31, but their task is amplified. The Illinois Supreme Court ruled Friday that a 2013 law attempting to overhaul the nation’s worst-fund-

ed pension systems – Illinois’ unfunded liability is more than $100 billion – was unconstitutional. The plan would have saved money by cutting retirement benefits, among other changes.

While pensions weren’t mentioned during the roughly three hours of testimony Monday, backers of gambling legislation said conditions were lining up for the best shot in years. Democratic former Gov. Pat Quinn twice vetoed expansion plans, but Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has said he’s open to more casinos.

“Revenue is more of a need today than it was last week.

Here’s an area that we could generate revenue,” Rep. Bob Rita, a Democrat, told reporters. “It’s just a matter of how do we get there and what model do we use.”

Two proposals are on the table – one calling for a Chicago casino and one adding four more casinos – with another

in the works.

Impact in Joliet

In Joliet, city officials worry they will see further erosion of gambling tax revenues if more casinos are added to the Chicago market.

“It dilutes the number of people who will go to existing casinos,” City Manager Jim Hock said.

Gambling taxes from casinos have fallen in Joliet and elsewhere in State Rep. Illinois. Joliet Larry Walsh received $18.8 Jr., D-Elwood million in casino taxes in 2014, a 4 percent decline from the year before, according to the Illinois Gaming Board.

Casino taxes in Joliet have declined every year since 2010, when gambling taxes totaled $23 million.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said he does not

support gambling expansion, but added, “Our biggest fear for Joliet is another south suburban casino 20 miles down Interstate 80.”

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, noted casinos were originally legalized in Illinois to help river towns such as Joliet that lost jobs with the decline of manufacturing.

He pointed to recent decisions to cut more than 400 jobs at the Caterpillar factory State Sen. Pat McGuire, and NRG power plant and D-Joliet said, “Joliet’s traditional industries continue to struggle.”

He predicted that the expansion of gambling to bring in more revenue for Chicago and the state of Illinois would lead to fewer jobs in Joliet.

Government-owned casinos

was the second of its kind this month as Rita and others pushing expanded gambling tinker with details.

The lingering issues are tax rates and who should own casinos, municipalities or the state.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants a Chicago-owned casino; plans sponsored by Rita outline state-owned facilities.

Tourism experts from Choose Chicago and hotel and restaurant associations said a casino in or near downtown could capitalize on existing resources and boost economic development, as well as bring in revenue.

Opponents argued the market has become saturated and revenue is down at most of Illinois’ casinos. Others expressed concerns about a rise in addiction.

Legislators push for Rt. 53 traffic signal in Elwood

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – State lawmakers are renewing a push for traffic signals at a dangerous Elwood intersection where an 8-year-old girl died last spring in a collision between a semitrailer and a minivan.

“It isn’t safe. It’s better to do it now than later,” said state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood. “I don’t want to see another accident there.”

After Madison Frost’s death in March 2014, the Illinois Department of Transportation installed amber flashing beacons along the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 53 to raise awareness about the dangers of the intersection with Mississippi Avenue.

But Walsh said that’s not enough.

“The formation of the roadway makes it a free-for-all.

It wasn’t designed well,” he

said. “It needs a signal.”

For years, he and other local officials and legislators

have sought approval from IDOT to install a traffic light there and at several other Route 53 intersections, because of crashes involving semitrailers. Previous attempts to get a signal there failed.

He said he recently asked the state agency to conduct a second traffic engineering study after last summer’s IDOT study determined the volume of truck traffic was insufficient to warrant installation of traffic signals.

Email and phone messages left Monday with IDOT spokesman Guy Tridgell requesting comment and the results of last summer’s study were not immediately returned.

The closure of the controversial Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing has resulted in an increase in traffic and

challenges facing motorists traveling along Mississippi Avenue, Walsh said. Employees of the nearly trucking intermodals now use Mississippi Avenue as a main entrance with the nearby Walter Strawn Drive closed off.

In 2012, flashing lights were installed at the nearby Schweitzer Road intersection in Joliet, the site of three collisions with semitrailers, one fatal.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said the increased truck traffic, along with last month’s fatal crash at the nearby Manhattan Road and Route 53 intersection, warrants “immediate attention” to the issue.

McGuire said he also has contacted IDOT officials about the installation of traffic lights at Mississippi Avenue.

Event will keep textiles out of landfills

The same goes for a stained shirt or a blouse with a missing button, she said.

“A lot of people automatically think, ‘Who’s going to want this?’ and throw it away.

But that’s absolutely not true.

Some people would be happy to have it,” Keane said.

That’s the inspiration behind the Will County Land Use Department’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division annual textile collection event, which kicked off Monday.

The event goes through Friday, allowing residents to donate both usable and non-usable household textiles, such as clothing, sneakers and linen.

Collection bins are available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. inside the front entrance lobby of the Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago St. in Joliet.

Police: Drugs, loaded gun found in car

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said tactical officers stopped a blue Chevrolet Tahoe at 1 a.m. near Center and Division streets.

“There were four occupants in the vehicle and the backseat passengers kept moving and ducking out of the officers’ view, so they were ordered out of the vehicle,” Gregory said.

Police reportedly discovered Jerell D. Barber, 24, had a loaded black handgun under his seat. Barber, of the 200 block of Fourth Avenue, was arrested and booked into the

Barber was released from jail Sunday after posting bond, police said.

Officers also discovered Ira I. Tyler, of the 500 block of North Center Street, had cocaine under his seat, Gregory said. Tyler was arrested and booked into the Will County

The driver, Edrick C. Johnson, 24, of the 200 block of Bartleson Street, was charged with marijuana possession and released on bond.

An 18-year-old man also was taken into custody, but he was released without charges.

Records show Tyler, who turns 26 on Tuesday, was released on parole from the Department of Corrections in March after serving about half of a 13-year prison sentence.

He pleaded guilty to being one of three men who locked a gas clerk in a cooler during a September 2008 armed robbery at Clark Gas, 1160 W. Jefferson St., according to court records.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet Area Historical Museum exhibit created in partnership with Lewis University students recently received high recognition.

The Illinois State Historical Society gave its Award of Superior Achievement to “The Emergence of Modern Joliet: Art, Industry & Urbanization,” which was on display in 2014.

In presenting the award at the annual banquet in April, the judges commented on the partnership with Lewis University, as well as the use of social media for the display, Museum Executive Director Gregory Peerbolte said.

“It was the collaboration between us and Lewis that they really admired,” Peerbolte said.

Also recognized with a Certificate of Excellence was the 27-page companion booklet created by Lewis students to detail Joliet’s development from its agricultural roots.

Lewis students who participated in the exhibit were “just elated” to learn of the award, said Dennis Cremins, a Lewis history professor who was the exhibit’s guest curator.

Cremins’ history students were joined by design students from a class taught by Leslie Ansteth Colonna.

“When we were working on the exhibit, [the students]

had a hard time visualizing it,” Cremins said. “When they saw it, it looked great.”

“The Emergence of Modern Joliet: Art, Industry & Urbanization” also has the distinction of being the first traveling exhibit done at the museum, Peerbolte said. It was displayed at Lewis University on the main campus in Romeoville.

Cremins also is director of the Lewis University History Center, a partner in two exhibits now on display at the Gaylord Building, 200 W. Eighth St. in Lockport. The exhibits, “Lockport on View: Canal Community” and “Visions of the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor at 30,” are on display until May 20.

Joliet museum’s joint exhibit with Lewis wins state award

JOLIET – The Star Wars Scavenger Hunt returns Saturday to the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

The hunt for “Star Wars” figures is one of several events coming up at the museum, including a Civil War Symposium and the first of the Rooftop Summer Music Series.

The Star Wars Scavenger Hunt serves as a warmup for the Joliet Public Library’s Star Wars Day on June 6, an annual event that brings thousands of people to downtown Joliet.

Basically, the museum hides 20 Star Wars figures in the museum and does not charge any admission all day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It proved popular last year when held for the first time, Executive Director Gregory Peerbolte said.

“A lot of parents and kids came,” he said.

The following day will be more cerebral when the museum holds a Civil War Symposium from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Six speakers will discuss different subjects, including “Chicagoland Fights the Civil War” and “150 Years Ago or the Patriotism of Will County.”

Museum visitors will be charged the normal $6 admission fee, but there is no extra charge for the symposium.

The symposium is one of several events being held by the museum during the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. Visitors can see the “Joliet Remembers the Civil War” exhibit now on display.

On May 21, the first of five band performances on the museum rooftop this summer will be highlighted with the 1976 Band, which plays 1970s rock. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $8 for museum members and students.

Warrant issued for farmer accused of illegal dumping

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – An arrest warrant has been issued for Plainfield farmer Herman Fritz regarding alleged dumping of construction and other waste in and along the DuPage River.

The warrant was issued Thursday with a $50,000 bond.

Fritz had not been taken into custody as of Monday afternoon, Will County State’s Attorney spokesman Charles Pelkie said, adding that Fritz was given an offer to surrender by Friday.

Fritz and his attorney couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Monday afternoon. Fritz could not be found at his home on Monday afternoon.

Pelkie said Fritz is charged with two counts of criminal disposal of waste, alleging he dumped more than 250 cubic feet of dirt, bricks, asphalt, concrete, scrap metal, cardboard and bricks.

Fritz also is charged with four counts of misdemeanor criminal disposal of waste, one count of misdemeanor criminal air pollution for allegedly burning waste on his property, and three counts of misdemeanor water pollution for allegedly dumping waste into the DuPage River.

“The felony charges are punishable by probation and up to one to three years in prison by conviction,” Pelkie said, adding that fines can be assessed at $25,000 per violation.

The charges are based on events between Nov. 1 and Dec. 1, 2014, Pelkie said.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office issued an emergency injunction against Fritz on Nov. 20.

Pelkie said he couldn’t discuss if those dumping or burning events occurred after the emergency injunction order, pending the criminal case.

Fritz was supposed to be working with prosecutors on cleaning up waste that he has for decades allegedly dumped

on the bank of the DuPage River bordering his farm, just north and west of the Route 59 and Caton Farm Road intersection.

The cleanup process is the other leg of the Fritz case. A hearing in February was delayed until Aug. 11, pending discussions and cleanup.

According to discussions held in February, Fritz would bear all costs associated with cleaning up the land and river, including the hiring of two contractors to handle burn piles, land damage along the riverbank and construction debris that Fritz said he used to shore up the riverbank because of flooding.

Pelkie said he couldn’t comment on the status of cleanup operations. But he noted that conversations about the cleanup are ongoing.

“Nothing has changed on the civil front,” Pelkie said.

“We will move forward and continue to work with Mr. Fritz and his attorney to clean up his property.”

Paul A. Wielgus, 34, of the 19000 block of Hoff Road in Elwood, was arrested Friday and booked into the Will County Jail after a search warrant was executed at his home, Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow’s office said in a news release.

Investigators seized computers and electronic equipment in their search.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 is asking for the community’s input on selecting its new superintendent.

Superintendent Al Gegenheimer is retiring a year ahead of schedule, with his contract ending June 5.

Gegenheimer sent out an email Monday morning via Teacher Ease, as well as messages via School Messenger, announcing a survey concerning the desired qualities of a new superintendent.

This survey is open to Minooka residents and district parents. The district also teaches children with Joliet, Shorewood and Channahon addresses.

“The board is truly interested in your thoughts and insights,” Gegenheimer wrote in the email.

The survey will provide feedback from parents and staff to ensure the district will continue to provide a quality, affordable education, he added.

The district’s school board has launched a nationwide superintendent search to replace Gegenheimer. It hopes to find a person with superintendent and school finance experience, as Gegenheimer performs both roles for the district now.

The board has hired consultant Dave Love, of the Illinois Association of School Boards, to aid in the search, offering consulting, resume screening, job board advertising, interview assistance, survey and focus group arrangements to create a smooth hiring process. The board hopes to hire a superintendent by July.

Former Lockport residents, William “Bill” Lawrence Brill and Mildred “Millie” Ahlgrain Brill, will be memorialized and interred with military honors during a noon service on Friday, May 15, at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

Married for 67 years, Bill and Millie are survived by a brother, Lloyd Brill; two sisters, Jackie Rohner and Nancy Gibson; and three sons and their families. Bill Jr. and his wife, Jan, live in Lockport having raised two daughters, Kate and Anne, and now enjoy two grandchildren.

Bradley and wife, Peggy, live in Carmel, IN having raised a son and a daughter, Jason and Jessica. Dale and his wife, Stephanie, live in Tallahassee, FL with a son, Nolan.

David, the third son in the Brill family died in March of 2014.

Bill Brill served in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a Staff Sargent with the Fifth Air Force of the Army Air Corps. He returned from the war to join Illinois Bell and later AT&T in North Carolina retiring after 38 years of service. During his time in Lockport, Bill served as the chairman of the Lockport School Board. Millie worked at Material Service in Lockport before the Brills moved to North Carolina where they called home for more than 30 years until relocating to Tallahassee, FL in 2013.

Kay is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Nick; four children, Michael (Sandra Spivey) Zigrossi, Susan (Ronald) Orsini of Naperville, Timothy Zigrossi, and Terrence (Ann Jeriha) Zigrossi; one sister, Judy (nee Hoffmann) Ferguson; and numerous loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

State turns over marijuana applications to attorneys

By CARLA K. JOHNSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – Illinois has turned over 13,000 pages of documents to attorneys challenging how the state awarded one medical marijuana business license, marking the first release of such material.

While the records remain closed to journalists and the general public, the disclosure represents a win for attorneys representing a disappointed applicant and eventually may shed light on a secretive process. The case is one of several similar lawsuits being closely watched by the new marijuana industry.

“I’m pleased that the court is going to allow us to investigate what really occurred,” said attorney John Rooks, who represents Chicago-based PM Rx, an aspiring marijuana company that was the first to sue the state of Illinois. “It’s the only way

to know whether the applications were scored consistent with the law.”

Rooks said he received the files Friday, a deadline set by Cook County Judge Kathleen Kennedy, who set an “attorneys’ eyes only” restriction on the material. The records include applications from five companies that competed for a grower’s permit in a region that covers Ford, Iroquois and Kankakee counties.

In March, the judge halted a permit award in that district. Without a permit, the winning company, Chicago-based Cresco Labs, hasn’t been able to start construction of its planned 40,000-square-foot growing facility in Kankakee. Cresco won two other permits. Its operations are underway in Joliet and Lincoln.

Rooks told The Associated Press on Monday that the state gave him a set of applications with names and addresses blacked out, sug-

gesting he has the redacted versions submitted by businesses to the state last fall.

Businesses also submitted originals without redactions, and Rooks said he wants those fuller versions and will pursue them in court, if necessary.

The marijuana program has been troubled by questions about background checks and how former Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration conducted the process of selecting businesses.

The secrecy stems from the Illinois medical marijuana law itself, which expressly shielded the business applications from public disclosure.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office has fought the release of the applications and materials about how they were ranked and scored.

Madigan’s office declined an opportunity to comment because the litigation is pending.

Wilson, who lived in Branford with her sister, died Saturday at Yale-New Haven Hospital, actress Elizabeth Morton, a spokeswoman for the family, said Monday.

Wilson played Dustin Hoffman’s mother in “The Graduate” and the character Roz in “9 to 5.” She had roles in almost 30 films, including “Catch-22” and “Regarding Henry,” and appeared in numerous stage and television shows, playing Archie Bunker’s cousin on “All in the Family.”

Wilson won a Tony Award for her performance in 1972’s “Sticks and Bones.” She made her Broadway debut in 1953 in “Picnic,” and ap-

Peoria officers hosting ‘Comply and Complain’ workshop

PEORIA – Two Peoria officers are hosting a workshop this weekend what to do when stopped by police amid questions nationwide about police use of force.

Officers Daniel Duncan and Aaron Watkins will lead a free “Comply and Complain” workshop on Saturday afternoon.

The officers will attempt to educate residents about what to do and what not to do when they’re stopped by police.

“Education and rights are a big component of this presentation,” Watkins said. “But respect is an even bigger component. You get back what you give. It goes both ways.”

A person always should comply with an officer instead of resisting, Duncan told the Peoria Journal Star. It’s best to file a complaint after the fact, he said.

Many recent high-profile cases of fatal encounters between police officers and black men could have been avoided if the men hadn’t resisted arrest, according to Duncan. Both Duncan and Watkins are black.

Formal complaints can be more effective than people realize, and often can serve as a warning sign to a police supervisor that a certain officer may need more oversight, Duncan said. The Peoria Police Department received 36 formal complaints in 2013 and 54 last year. It has recorded 17 complaints so far this year.

Inmate who escaped gets 107 years for murder

KANKAKEE – A Kankakee County jail inmate who escaped last month and was captured

three days later has been sentenced to more than a century in prison for a 2013 murder.

The Kankakee Daily Journal reports 23-year-old Kamron T. Taylor was sentenced Monday to 107 years in prison.

On Friday, a judge denied his attorney’s motion for a new trial. Taylor was convicted in February in the shooting death of 21-year-old Nelson Williams Jr. during a botched robbery attempt.

On April 1, Taylor escaped from the Jerome Combs Detention Center after attacking a guard who was making rounds. Authorities say Taylor put on the guard’s uniform to trick officers into buzzing him through security doors. He drove off in the guard’s SUV and was captured three days later in Chicago.

Illinois treasurer launches unpaid internship program

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois treasurer’s office is launching a new, unpaid internship program to replace one that a newspaper investigation found gave paid internships to those with political connections.

Democratic Treasurer Mike Frerichs said Monday that the new program will provide students with experience in public service. The announcement follows a report by the Chicago Sun-Times last year and a review ordered by Frerichs that called for an overhaul of the “clout heavy” program. Frerichs took office in January.

Appeals court upholds conviction in friend’s murder

WHEATON – An Illinois appeals court has upheld the first-degree murder conviction of a Maywood man in the 2004 fatal shooting of a teenage girl who had reportedly been his childhood friend. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said Monday that the Second District Appellate Court affirmed the conviction of Joshua Matthews, 30, in the slaying of Sade Glover, 17, of Warrenville. Matthews was sentenced to 100 years in prison after his January 2011 conviction.

BOSTON – Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s lawyers rested their case Monday in their bid to save him from execution after death penalty opponent Sister Helen Prejean testified that he expressed genuine sorrow for the victims.

“No one deserves to suffer like they did,” Prejean quoted him as saying.

The prosecution wrapped up its case as well Monday. The sides will return Wednesday to give closing arguments, after which the federal jury will decide whether the 21-year-old Tsarnaev should be put to death or receive life in prison.

Prejean, a Roman Catholic nun, met with Tsarnaev five times at the request of the defense.

Prejean said she could hear “pain” in his voice when he said he regretted what happened to the victims in the 2013 attack, which left three people dead and more than 260 hurt.

During cross-examination by prosecutor William Weinreb, she acknowledged she believes no one deserves to be executed, no matter what the crime.

White House denies Gulf overtures are unraveling

WASHINGTON – The White House on Monday raced to dispel the notion that President Barack Obama’s efforts to reassure anxious Persian Gulf nations about his overtures to Iran were unraveling ahead of

a rare Camp David summit this week.

Officials insisted there was no weakening in ties between the U.S. and the Gulf, despite the fact that just two other heads of state will join Obama for Thursday’s meetings at the presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains. The rulers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Oman are skipping the summit and instead sending lower-ranking, yet highly influential representatives.

Police say they didn’t see FBI bulletin before attack

GARLAND, Texas – Hours before two would-be terrorists attacked a provocative Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest, the FBI sent local authorities the license plate number and photo of one of the shooters, who had a prior terrorism-related conviction, but police said Monday they didn’t see the intelligence bulletin in time.

Garland Police Chief Mitch Bates also said the FBI notice was not specific enough to have altered authorities’ response.

About 40 Garland police officers, along with members of federal and state law enforcement agencies, were guarding the May 3 event at a conference center in suburban Dallas when the attackers drove up and opened fire. Five officers responded, killing the two gunmen. One unarmed security guard was injured.

Tornadoes kill at least 5 in Texas and Arkansas

By CLAUDIA LAUER and DAVID WARREN The Associated Press LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Emergency responders searched through splintered wreckage Monday after a line of tornadoes battered several small communities in Texas and Arkansas, killing at least five people, including a young couple who died trying to shield their daughter from the storm.

The couple, both in their late 20s, died when a twister hit their mobile home late Sunday in the Arkansas town of Nashville.

Michael and Melissa Mooneyhan were trying to protect their daughter when the parents’ trailer flipped over and “exploded,” Howard County Coroner John Gray said.

“I had wondered if they were in an enclosed space like a hallway or a bathroom just sheltering the little girl when it hit,” Gray said. “It’s a miracle that little girl sur-

vived.”

The girl, who is about 18 months old, was taken to the hospital and later released to relatives.

“That poor little girl is never going to know them,” Gray said. “But she’s young enough that she’ll never remember what happened.”

The two parents met when they were teenagers attending different high schools and were married in April 2004, before they even graduated.

Polly McCammack, who also lives in Nashville, is Melissa’s third cousin. A week ago, she said, the closeknit family lost their grandmother who “practically raised” Melissa and her siblings.

“The family has been hit hard. They’re strong, but it’s almost like to the point you’re afraid to breathe,” McCammack said.

Family members went to the site of the destroyed home looking for mementos, toys and other things they

could salvage for the little girl, McCammack said.

National Weather Service investigators confirmed a tornado with a preliminary EF2 rating and winds estimated at 125 mph touched down in Nashville, meteorologist Travis Washington said.

The county’s tornado sirens were sounded for so long during Sunday’s first tornado warning that the battery was drained, Howard County Emergency Management Coordinator Sonny Raulerson said.

When a second warning was issued for about 16 miles south of Nashville, the sirens could not be sounded, Raulerson said.

In neighboring Texas, a tornado pummeled the small city of Van, damaging or destroying 50 to 100 homes and the local schools, according to Chuck Allen, fire marshal and emergency management coordinator for Van Zandt County. Authorities confirmed two deaths.

With food and clean water running low, some could be in grave danger.

“These are people in desperate straits,” said Phil Robertson of Human Rights Watch in Bangkok, calling on governments to help those still stranded at sea, some for two months or longer.

The Rohingya, who are Muslim, have suffered for decades from state-sanctioned discrimination in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, which considers them illegal settlers from Bangladesh even though their families have lived there for generations.

Attacks on members of the religious minority, numbering at around 1.3 million, have in the past three years left up to 280 people dead and forced 140,000 others from their homes. They now live under

apartheid-like conditions in crowded camps, where they have little access to school or adequate health care.

The conditions at home – and lack of job opportunities – have sparked one of the biggest exoduses of boat people since the Vietnam War. Chris Lewa, director of the nonprofit Arakan Project, which has been monitoring boat departures and arrivals for more than a decade, estimates more than 100,000 men, women and children have boarded ships since mid-2012.

Most are trying to reach Malaysia, but recent regional crackdowns on human trafficking networks have sent brokers and agents into hiding, making it impossible for migrants to disembark.

Lewa believes up to 7,000 Rohingya and Bangaldeshis still are on boats in the Malacca Strait and nearby international waters.

By MATTHEW LEE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Secretary of State John Kerry departed Monday for Russia to meet with President Vladimir Putin, on his first visit to the country since relations between Washington and Moscow plummeted to post-Cold War lows amid disagreements over Ukraine and Syria.

The State Department said Kerry would meet Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday at the Black Sea resort of Sochi. But in a sign of the considerable strains, the Kremlin said Putin’s attendance had yet to be confirmed and the Russian Foreign Ministry previewed the talks by blaming Washington for the breakdown in relations.

“The Obama administration chose the path of scaling back bilateral relations, proclaimed a course of isolating Russia on the international arena and demanded that those states that traditionally follow the lead of Washington support its confrontational steps,” it said.

Ukraine’s crisis, it said, “was largely provoked by the United States itself.”

The rhetoric hardly augured well for a breakthrough on any of the many issues dividing the U.S. and Russia. Nevertheless, both sides stressed the importance of trying to work through some of the rancor that buried President Barack Obama’s first-term effort to “reset” ties with Moscow.

“This just was a time that made sense,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said of Kerry’s scheduled meeting with Putin. She said talks would cover the civil wars in Ukraine and Syria, and ongoing nuclear negotiations between world powers and Iran.

The short trip to Sochi will be only Kerry’s second to Russia since taking office. He visited Moscow in May 2013, meeting with Putin and Lavrov before the Ukraine crisis erupted and Russia annexed the Ukrainian territory of Crimea.

LONDON – Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservatives may have won the British election and ushered their coalition partner out the door, but that doesn’t mean it’s all smooth sailing for his government for the next five years.

With influential Euroskeptics clamoring in his own party and a very slim majority in Parliament, Cameron will have a hard time tackling the big headaches looming over his second term: Britain’s membership in the 28-nation European Union and the growing movement for Scottish independence.

“He would like to be seen as leading a governing party which is united on a core issue at the center of the political debate, but that’s unlikely to happen,” said Colin Hay, a British politics professor at the Paris Institute of Political Studies. “It’s going to be really tough.”

Cameron’s Conservatives won an unexpected majority in last week’s election, ensuring that he returns to 10 Downing St. with enough

and continuity is clear: “Keep calm and carry on,” as the Times newspaper put it in a headline.

That is easier said than done in Britain’s rowdy Parliament, where Cameron does not have full support from his party on the two key topics of Scotland and membership in the EU. Radical Conservatives also disagree with their more moderate colleagues over how to deal with the question of Scotland, where the separatist Scottish National Party gained an unprecedented landslide victory in the race for seats in the British Parliament, winning 56 of Scotland’s 59 seats.

To the Editor: On April 18, my family and I enjoyed visiting the Joliet Park District’s Earth Day Celebration at the Pilcher Park Nature Center.

We started by enjoying crackers with a dip made from wild garlic mustard. Also inside, we viewed and enjoyed a live bird display. The birds almost appeared human and responded well to voice prompts and touch.

Outside, we enjoyed the outdoor exhibits that were designed especially for the young and the not-so-young. We took a guided

wildflower walking tour from a very inspiring and knowledgeable employee named Abbey, and spent the next 45 minutes or so exploring coneflowers, bluebells, skunk cabbage, trillium and lots of natural habitat, and picked bags of garlic mustard to prepare our own dip at home.

The afternoon was enjoyable and informative. Kudos to the Joliet Park District and its staff. Our area residents should take advantage of all the activities that are offered at Pilcher Park and throughout the Joliet Park District.

Local gov’ts seek to be less accountable, transparent As state government scurries to fill a projected $8 billion deficit in the 2016 fiscal year budget, it would seem to make sense to move beyond successful compromises and proven solutions already in place and instead focus on issues that truly have a significant impact on the state’s finances.

At least you would think so, given the seriousness of the fiscal crisis.

But that’s not the case with some elected officials and local government lobbyists that represent the more than 7,000 taxpayer-funded units of government in Illinois. Behindthe-scenes efforts are taking place that would reduce their obligation of accountability and transparency to taxpayers, all under the guise of the state’s financial crisis. It’s a “smoke-and-mirrors” attempt by local governments at a time of fiscal crisis where Illinois taxpayers would end up on the losing end.

One successful compromise and proven solution that now is in its fifth year of operation is the PublicNoticeIllinois website, or www. publicnoticeillinois.com. PNI

AMENDMENT

is a centralized, aggregated website for all public notices from the state of Illinois, units of local government and the Illinois court system. It’s a free-access website that is updated daily. It’s an example of a proven, successful public-private partnership that already is saving taxpayers money and should be supported by elected officials at all levels of government.

Public notices, or legal notices as they are often referred to, are a fundamental component in the foundation of our democracy and of our legal system. For more than 200 years, newspapers have been paid to print public notices and to serve as the critically important independent third party between units of local government and taxpayers, and have functioned as the official notification system of our court system. Notice of publication in newspapers provides the proven and necessary verification, certification and archiving solution that ensure individuals’ and taxpayers’ rights are protected and preserved.

Frankly, it’s a process that has worked so well and for so

GUEST VIEW DENNIS DeROSSETT long that those wanting to eliminate it or change to another process rarely consider the chaos and disruption to government bodies and to the court system that would take place without this proper verification, certification and archiving of public notices and notices of the courts.

PNI was created by state law in 2011 and was approved unanimously by both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly – yes, unanimously.

Key components of the law called for the creation of a centralized website for public notices that would be managed by Illinois newspapers.

It requires newspapers to upload all notices to PNI after the notices appear in print.

All of this is done at no additional cost to government. No taxpayer money goes toward supporting or managing the public notice website.

With each new session of the Illinois General Assembly, local government lobbyists –

whose paychecks are funded largely by your tax dollars – repeatedly push bills to eliminate public notices or remove them from newspapers and PNI in favor of their own individual websites. These bills rarely make it out of committee because, frankly, state lawmakers understand that forcing citizens to attempt to locate notices across 7,000 websites doesn’t make sense.

(Actually, it would be about 4,000 websites, because many units of local government do not yet have a website.)

Such legislation was introduced and failed again earlier this session. However, local government groups are using behind-the-scenes tactics to remove public notices from print and from PNI and, instead, have the notices placed on their individual websites.

But this time, they have a new twist: They are claiming that having to be accountable and transparent through the current public notice process is an “unfunded mandate,” and they want to do away with it. The simple fact is this issue is not about money – it’s about reducing transparency and accountability to the taxpayers.

Every year, Illinois citizens dutifully fulfill their obligation of paying many types and amounts of taxes to support these thousands of local government units throughout the state. Each of these units has an annual operating budget that ranges from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of millions and even billions of dollars – taxpayer dollars, that is.

It’s not at all about “saving the taxpayers money,” because that already has been done successfully through the 2011 legislation and PNI. Local governments still will try to sell it that way, however. Local government officials should focus on the big-impact issues, allow the proven public notice solution in our state to keep working and not spend so much time and taxpayer dollars on how to be less accountable and less transparent.

Plainfield North beats rival Plainfield East

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – After winning a regional title a year ago, Plainfield North’s boys volleyball team realizes repeating would be difficult this season after the IHSA assigned it to the state’s toughest sectional.

But the Tigers aren’t going to throw in the towel on the postseason. Coach Tracey Marshall and her squad are doing their best to prepare for the tough challenges ahead.

That includes Marshall doing less in-match coaching from the bench as well as mixing a lot of players into different situations.

North demonstrated both of those things in Monday’s Southwest Prairie Conference match with 119th Street rival Plainfield East, which the host Tigers won, 25-15, 26-24.

“We’ve been working on putting them in pressure situations because, as we’re nearing the end of the season, we’re going to be facing a lot of high-caliber teams that we haven’t seen before, so we need to be prepared for them,” Marshall said. “I’ve also been mixing the lineup up so they maintain their focus.

“Things got a little crazy in the second set for five or six points, but they were ultimately able to come back and win the set. You’ll see me sit down a lot more toward the end of the season because the guys have to take care of it.

I’m trying to get them to not look over at me on the sideline and to play to win.”

In the second set, the Tigers (19-7, 8-3) subbed out setter Shane Yeo and replaced him with sophomore Quinn Isaacson in that role. The latter finished with 11 assists and two aces.

Yeo, who will play at the University of Mount Olive (North Carolina), likes how North is coming together.

“We’re just trying to get into the right mindset for the playoffs,” Yeo said. “We got Kyle (Piekarski) back, and that’s nice. We’re going to start putting things together and get what we need to get done. I like how we’re able to

“I like how the guys on this team are really fun. We hang out all of the time, and we’re a really close group of guys. And I think that that really reflects how we play on the court. It helps to have that chemistry.

I like our consistency and our main focus is serve and pass.”

North grabbed the early lead in the finale, but East (818, 1-10) showed resilience following a tough ending to the opening set by playing pretty evenly through the rest of the match.

The Tigers took a 21-18 lead following a 3-0 run capped by a kill from Alex Orr, but the Bengals responded with a 4-0

burst, which started with a kill by Feras Hleihel (six kills) and ended with an ace from Luke Brown (13 assists).

A net violation gave East a 24-23 lead, but North tied it on a wide hit. The hosts moved in front for good on a block by 6-foot-8 Piekarski, who recently was cleared to play, and then Patrick Crippen got a kill to wrap things up.

“We wanted to close out the second game and see what would happen in a third game,” Bengals coach Dan Vergo said. “We switched up to a 5-1 in the second set, and it worked out pretty well. My guys are growing, and it’s all about the state tournament now.

“Right now, the only piece that we’re missing is closing out games. Once we find that piece of the puzzle, it’s going to be a fun postseason. The thing that I love about these guys is that they are not afraid of anyone. They don’t back down, and it’s fun to watch them play.”

In the opener, East bounced

back from an early deficit to grab an 11-10 lead after a 5-0 run that featured two blocks from Drew May, an ace by Adriel Rivas and kills from Hleihel and May. But North responded by scoring 15 of the next 19 points to capture the set. Yeo had two kills, Alex Pasek added a block and a kill, and Greg Rash, Jacob Stepnowski and Isaacson had aces in that run.

Evan Robeck paced the Tigers with six kills, while Chris Paige added seven digs. The Bengals also received seven digs from Ethan Rodriguez.

“It’s really exciting to see the growth of this team,” Robeck said. “Everyone’s finally starting to click together, and we’re building on our chemistry.

“That’s a good thing to start building going into the postseason, since the teams that we’ll face will keep getting stronger and stronger. I like how the guys on this team are really light-hearted but also take things seriously when they need to.”

“I know that we have a good program because of a lot of different things, but one thing that I as a head coach was proud of was being able to take those nonexperienced kids and making a program out of it and competing with the schools in this area. I think there’s only so many people who really understood that.”

“People ask me if I miss it, and obviously I’m still around, and I still go in the room,” Williams said. “I miss the relationships with the kids, but as far as the bustle and the hustle of coaching, I don’t really miss that. Actually, it’s a whole different feel right now. There’s not a lot of developing – there’s honing, and that’s why this is perfect for Josh.”

Williams readily will admit that if not for all the hard work and dedication of longtime coaches such as George Brecheisen, Brian Klene, Steve McNabb, Matt Bartley and Oster, the Porters’ program would not have become one the state’s best. And he appreciated the support of athletic directors such as Bob Allen, Kent Irvin, Randy Konstans

and Brian Goff.

“On the hall of fame thing, I made special mention to coach Brecheisen and coach Klene,” Williams said. “They were there for those days, especially Brecheisen. When Klene came in from Lincoln-Way, he was shocked and asked, ‘How do you guys compete?’ A lot of it wasn’t moves but just the kids working really hard and us doing a lot of motivation.

“It came from doing the right things and making the right decisions, and we had a lot of resolve and didn’t bend very often. A lot of people looked at us like we were crazy, but to be able to do what we did, we had to have that foundation of discipline, and that’s why it’s become a consistent thing from year to year.”

“My wife brought our kids everywhere, and she tried to keep it a family affair, so I always knew that they were there,” Williams said. “It was special that she would help support me in that way. Having the girls do stats for me and having Emeric wrestle, the family part really meant a lot to me. And, hopefully, the Lockport wrestlers saw that family is important.”

certain way while also trying to make the whole experience an enjoyable one.

“I had two strong mentors in college as far as how I liked how they coached,” Williams said.

“One was Rex Branum, who was coach at Lincoln College and Triton and then won several national championships at Lassen Junior College in California. And also, my grad assistant at Southwest Missouri, Sean McCarthy, who instilled hard work and discipline.

“People probably looked at me like I was crazy, since it seemed like I was goofing around all the time. But I’ll guarantee that the kids will say that they worked hard, but they also had fun. I never wanted it to be just about wins and losses. Instead, it was about being good people, having fun, treating others right and working hard.”

LOCKPORT – When Joe Williams took over Lockport’s wrestling program in 1990 after serving a year as an assistant, there really was only one direction for it to go.

With few experienced kids to work with, there were some years when the Porters struggled against top programs both in their conference and in the area.

But the hard work eventually paid off, with Lockport becoming one of the state’s top programs on a consistent basis by the end of his 21-year head coaching tenure, which concluded after the 2011 season.

Williams coached 48 state qualifiers, 19 placewinners, six runner-ups and three champions. And in 2010, the Porters captured their first regional title – this in Class A. Williams recently was honored for his career at Lockport by being inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame.

“There were some rough goings early, and I was a little bit immature myself,” Williams said. “I know that we have a good program because of a lot of different things, but one thing that I as a head coach was proud of was being able to take those nonexperienced kids and making a program out of it and competing with the schools in this area.

“I think there’s only so many people who really understood that. A lot of people thought that we were experienced, but there might only be two or three kids a year who had wrestled before. To build from there and to be where we are now, I’m very proud of that.”

Late runs secure Morris win

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When a high school baseball team is at home and already has the lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the ideal situation is for that team to score a run or two just to extend the lead a bit heading into the seventh.

Morris did just that Monday afternoon, tacking three runs onto a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth to hold a 6-1 advantage going into the seventh.

As it turned out, that lead was needed when Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Yorkville scored twice in the top of the seventh before Cody Niewinski finished off his complete game in a 6-3 Redskins’ win.

“In hindsight, obviously those runs were huge,” Morris coach Todd Kein said. “Every run in a baseball game is a big run. That’s why, when we were up 6-1, we were still trying to put the ball in play and make things happen. We had a lot of things be successful today that we’ve been trying to do all year.”

For Niewinski, who allowed five hits and struck out six, the runs gave him a little more breathing room.

“It felt good to see the offense going like that,” he said. “When we came in to hit in the sixth, I thought it would be nice to get a couple more runs. It gives you a bigger margin of error in the seventh.”

Yorkville touched Niewinski for an unearned run in the top of the fourth, but the Redskin defense helped him get out of the inning without further harm.

With one out, the bases loaded and a run already home, Yorkville’s Luc Ferran grounded a ball to first.

Morris’ Chase Hansen threw home to force the runner from third and, when the runner from second rounded third and slipped, catcher Tyler Bordner threw him out for a double play.

swered quickly. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Tom Cheshareck slammed a solo homer into the trees beyond the center-field fence to tie the game and fuel the Redskins’ fire.

“That was a big, ‘We can do this’ moment,” Niewinski said about Cheshareck’s homer. “It lit a fire under us.”

Kein was also glad to see it.

“Chez’s homer got us going,” he said. “We aren’t a big home run hitting team, so when we get one, we’d like to use it. As a coach, you’d like to think that would light a fire under your team, and it did.

“I am just so darn proud of these kids. They’ve had multiple opportunities to maybe not give everything they have, but this team

isn’t like that. They always give everything they’ve got.”

Niewinski went out and retired the Foxes in order in the top of the fifth, getting the fired-up Redskins right back in the dugout.

“I was pretty jacked up after that home run,” Niewinski said. “I was just trying to get outs.”

The Redskins rewarded their pitcher with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Emmet Chouinard reached on an error before Justin McTague laid a perfect bunt down the third-base line. He beat the throw and it went into the right-field bullpen, allowing Chouinard to motor all the way around to score. McTague ended up at third.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bordner led off with a single and Cheshareck walked.

With Chase Hansen at bat, a balk moved the runners up a base and Hansen then singled to center. The ball got past the center fielder, allowing both courtesy runner Jordan Miracle and Cheshareck to score. After Niewinski singled, Chouinard grounded to second to score Hansen.

Yorkville got a two-run double from Matt Gruber in the top of the seventh and had runners on second and third with one out before Niewinski struck out Cameron Van Boeckel and got Tanner Rosati to pop to second to end the game.

“We did a lot of little things today that added up to a big win,” Kein said. “From Justin McTague’s bunt to a two-out hit by Matt Walker, then Chase Hansen coming through with a good swing.

And that was vintage Cody Niewinski on the mound.

There was no doubt who was getting the ball today, and he set a great tone for us.”

“Despite our conviction that there was no tampering with footballs, it was our intention to accept any discipline levied by the league,” the statement said.

“Today’s punishment, however, far exceeded any reasonable expectation. It was based completely on circumstantial rather than hard or conclusive evidence.

“Tom Brady has our unconditional support. Our belief in him has not wavered.”

The league also indefinitely suspended the two equipment staffers believed to have carried out the plan, including one who called himself “The Deflator.”

Vincent wrote letters to the team and Brady saying a league-sponsored investigative report established “substantial and credible evidence” that the quarterback knew the employees were deflating footballs and failed to cooperate with investigators.

The investigation by attorney Ted Wells found that Brady “was at least generally aware” of plans by two Patriots employees to prepare the balls to his liking, below the league-mandated minimum of 12.5 pounds per square inch.

Read this quote from the league’s statement on its findings: “In accepting the findings of the report, we note that the report identified no evidence of wrongdoing or knowledge of wrongdoing on the part of any member of the coaching staff, including head coach Bill Belichick, or by any Patriots’ staff member other than Mr. Jastremski and Mr. McNally, including head equipment manager Dave Schoenfeld. Similarly, the Wells Report is clear that Patriots ownership and executives did not participate in any way in the misconduct, or have knowledge of the misconduct.

“Nonetheless, it remains a fundamental principle that the club is responsible for the actions of club employees.”

That is how Goodell and Vincent justify fining the completely innocent Kraft family $1 million and punishing them, the coaching staff, front office, 52 other players and millions of Pats fans with the loss of a first- and fourthround draft choice and the loss of their best player for four games.

So why doesn’t the same “fundamental principle” apply to Goodell and Vincent? Why aren’t they culpable for the actions of all league employees and participants?

If Goodell’s ruling in this case is logical and reasonable, shouldn’t he by his own standard be held accountable for the league he runs turning out domestic abusers, batterers and impaired drivers like clockwork? Doesn’t that impact the integrity of the league just a bit?

What are your failures worth, Commish? A four-week suspension, a year, maybe a decade?

Where does this silliness and stupidity end?

NEW YORK – The NFL came down hard on its biggest star and its championship team, telling Tom Brady and the Patriots that no one is allowed to mess with the rules of the game.

The league suspended the Super Bowl MVP on Monday for the first four games of the season, fined the New England Patriots $1 million and took away two draft picks as punishment for deflating footballs used in the AFC title game.

“Each player, no matter how accomplished and otherwise respected, has an obligation to comply with the rules and must be held accountable for his actions when those rules are violated and the public’s confidence in the game is called into question,” NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent wrote to Brady.

The Patriots lose next year’s first-round pick and a fourth-round choice in 2017.

Brady would miss the season’s showcase kickoff game on Sept.

10 against Pittsburgh, then Week 2 at Buffalo, a home game against Jacksonville and a game at Dallas.

He will return the week of a Patriots-Colts AFC championship rematch in Indianapolis.

He would be replaced by Jimmy Garoppolo, a 2014 second-round selection from Eastern Illinois who won the Walter Payton award as the best player in the FCS. He has thrown 27 NFL passes, including one touchdown.

Brady has three days to appeal the suspension to Commissioner Roger Goodell or his designee. His agent, Don Yee, said “the discipline is ridiculous and has no legitimate basis” and that Brady will appeal.

“And if the hearing officer is completely independent and neutral, I am very confident the Wells Report will be exposed as an incredibly frail exercise in fact-finding and logic,” Yee said in a statement.

The Patriots said in a statement they thought the punishment was too severe.

I have no doubt Tom Brady was aware his equipment guys were playing with the pressure in his footballs, and he may have known they were bending the rules – but it’s a long road from there to cheating.

Having read large chunks of the Wells Report, but admittedly not all of it, I also have no doubt its intent was to find Brady and the New England Patriots guilty of something rather than get to the truth.

When you read Wells’ questioning of referee Walt Anderson as to which pressure gauges actually were used and how the report clearly tries to put words in Anderson’s mouth, the report doesn’t even prove “it’s more likely than not” that the footballs used against the Colts were underinflated.

But what the heck; for purposes of this chat, let’s assume the balls were soft.

I absolutely have no doubt Gaylord Perry threw spitballs, Lester Hayes used too much stickem’ and that a significant number of NFL players dating all the way back to the ’80s experimented with and used steroids.

Where are their Wells Reports?

And, more importantly, what were their teams’ punishments?

I get there are a lot of jealous, petty or envious fans out there who think it’s OK to hate Brady and for the league to punish him because his life is just too good to be true and he can come off at times as arrogant or, worse yet, snarky.

But what exactly does that say about them? Is that who you want to be?

What I have not found anywhere is anyone who believes the pressure in the footballs has at any time had anything to do with the competitiveness, outcomes or integrity of his games.

Commissioner Roger Goodell and his sergeant at arms, Troy Vincent, want us to agree that in a country where many celebrate Edward Snowden’s treason for allegedly trying to protect Americans’ private correspondences, Brady should be punished for not offering his up.

Hey, they say they promised to protect it, and we all know how good the league office has been at that lately.

They’re still looking for that second “Rice Tape,” aren’t they?

Speaking of which, that Goodell could watch the “first” Rice video and determine that dumping his uncon-

Allergy symptoms interfere with daily lives of Joliet-area residents

JOLIET – Tyler Gundberg wants to be more athletic and spend more time outside.

But he can’t. And the Joliet resident blames allergies.

“I can’t breathe after running,” said Tyler, 14. “I can run for 45 seconds, maybe. I feel like I can’t catch my breath, and my chest feels tight.”

Marie Larsen of Joliet, worship leader at Peace Chapel in Morris, said seasonal allergies interfere with her life, too. Flare-ups make Larsen more prone to colds and coughs. More than once, Larsen has found herself stepping away from the microphone at church to cough discreetly.

“They [allergies] make it hard to take a deep breath or sustain a note for any length of time,” Larsen said.

Bad seasonal allergies year

Allergy season is in full bloom, said Dr. Hetal Amin, an allergist/ immunologist with Morris Hospital Allergy Specialists. It’s particularly severe this year because of a late frost, a delayed spring and plenty of rain.

Typically, tree season begins in March and tapers off in May, when grass season starts, Amin said. Tree season continues into July, with ragweed season starting in mid-August and continuing through September. When warm weather lingers, ragweed thrives longer than usual, Amin added.

Season overlap means patients with multiple allergies have more severe – as well as persistent – symptoms, Amin said. The recent weather pattern of cold to warm to rainy to warmer created a perfect environment for pollen to grow and germinate, Amin said.

“It’s good for pollen,” Amin said, “not good for patients.”

The culprit making people miserable is histamine, a chemical that reacts to perceived intruders in the body with symptoms people experience as allergic reactions: itching and runny nose, itching and runny eyes, post-nasal drip, hives and bronchospasm, Amin said.

Treating seasonal allergies

If allergies are mild, staying inside when pollen counts are highest – typically mid-morning until late afternoon – then rinsing one’s eyes, hair and skin when coming inside, might relieve symptoms, Amin said.

Running the air conditioner and using a furnace filter that traps pollen also helps, Amin added, as does keeping pets groomed and bathed. Some people find relief with over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants or steroid nasal sprays.

Many of the newer antihistamines don’t cause drowsiness and last longer. Decongestants and steroid-based nasal sprays can unblock nasal passages, making breathing easier. Nasal sprays can block pollen reactions, which may prevent skin reactions, Amin said.

True asthma symptoms can be treated with medications to reduce inflammation and open airways. For wheezing from overall inflammation in the airways and vocal chords, and that is not true asthma, treating the upper airways may improve symptoms, Amin said.

Immunotherapy – commonly

known as allergy shots – also can help reduce reactions, Amin said. Small allergen doses are injected under the skin so, over time, the patient’s immunity to those allergens is increased.

Sublingual tablets – dissolved under one’s tongue – are available in low dosages for grass and ragweed, but not all insurance plans cover them, Amin said. They also are not tailored to a patient, do not build up to the high dosages their injected counterparts are and may not achieve the same clinical results, Amin added.

Lifestyle disruption

Unchecked inflammation may lead to swollen adenoids and nasal polyps, Amin said. Tyler has both, said Tyler’s mother, Kelly Gundberg of Joliet, and he will have surgery in June to remove them.

“He can only breathe through his mouth,” Kelly said. “He sounds like an 80-year-old man.”

Tyler has gotten sick when the seasons changed since he was 2, Kelly said. He was tested for allergies at 3, and medication has not helped. Tyler has had tubes to treat frequent double ear infections. He also had his tonsils

and adenoids removed.

Recently, an ear, nose and throat doctor diagnosed Tyler with chronic sinusitis. That’s when Kelly learned Tyler’s adenoids had grown back.

“I didn’t even know that could happen,” Kelly said.

Although Larsen officially was diagnosed with asthma at age 25 – after winding up in the emergency department while testing for a local fire department – Larsen said as a child she often coughed after gym class.

Seasonal allergies aren’t the only culprits. While caring for a vacationing friend’s cats, Larsen learned she had a cat allergy. Larsen also reacts to certain types of printing ink and stopped counting Sunday collections because of itching and her runny nose.

Larsen stopped working as a paramedic and firefighter when smoke became one of her asthma triggers.

She now works inside for a Plainfield window and door company. Still, Larsen often resorts to antihistamines, decongestants and her rescue inhaler.

“The allergies have gotten progressively worse about the last 12 years, “ Larsen said.

The BIG Letter Campaign, as it is called, ran from April 29 through May 1. The poster-size letters were displayed in high-traffic areas between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

The letters, which will be delivered to state legislators in Springfield in the coming weeks, highlight specific programs most vulnerable to pending cuts, including free mammograms for women at risk of breast cancer, behavioral health counseling for families and individuals, diabetes education, prenatal care for expectant mothers and pediatric care for children.

MANHATTAN – The annual Walk ’N’ Roll-A-Thon hosted by the Manhattan Park District, LWSRA and HomeStar Bank and Financial Services took place April 26.

This event is a fundraiser benefiting Les Turner/ALS Foundation and the future special-needs field – a ball field designed for people with disabilities at the Baker/Koren Round Barn Farm Park.

This year wasn’t just a typical 5K Fun Walk/Run/Roll

– it featured color powder stations to blast participants in an array of colors. About 80 participants ran through three color stations during the 3.1mile route on a combination of road and paved sidewalk.

MORRIS – The Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers Board of Directors has installed new officers for the 2015-16 term.

Kelly Beaty of Morris is the new board chairman, succeeding Mike Rittof, who has served on the board for 12 years, including the past two years as chair. Rittof remains on the board as immediate past president.

Additional officers for the 2015-16 term are Rodney Engstrom of Seneca, vice chairman; Barry Narvick of Morris, secretary; and Brian Angwin of Morris, treasurer.

Beaty is president of Standard Bank and Trust. He has served on the Morris Hospital Board of Directors since 2004

Within the community, Beaty also serves as president of the Morris Police Pension Board and president of the Fireman’s Pension Board. He is a facilitator for Operation St. Nick. Previously, he was a board member of the United Way of Grundy County and Grundy Economic Development Council and a member of the Morris Rotary.

Engstrom is a retired superintendent from Seneca High School, where he also was a teacher, coach and business manager. Engstrom was elected to the Morris Hospital Board of Directors in 2007 and serves on the finance, quality, long-range planning, recruitment and executive committees.

include: • Getting patients out of bed and walking as soon as possible; • Trying to avoid waking patients at night (to give medications or check vital signs, for example); • Making sure patients drink enough water.

Family members and friends can also help to prevent delirium: • Bring glasses, hearing aids and dentures to the hospital. Older people do better if they can see, hear and eat.

• Bring in a few familiar objects from home.

Family photos, a favorite comforter or blanket, rosary beads or a beloved book can be comforting.

• Keep easy-to-read clocks and calendars visible. One reason people get disoriented in the hospital is that they can’t go by normal cues, such as daylight.

• Talk about personal and current events.

• Remind your loved one that they are in the hospital and why they are there. In simple terms, explain what is being done to help them feel better.

• Spend as much time as possible with friends or family members who are in the hospital. The environment of a hospital will be unfamiliar and frightening, so contact with familiar people anchors an older hospitalized person to reality.

Family members are often the first to notice subtle changes.

If you detect any signs that could indicate delirium, discuss them with the hospital staff as soon as you can.

Dear Doctor K: My elderly mother has a number of health conditions. Over the past year, she has ended up in the hospital four times.

The last two times, she became delirious. Is there anything we can do to prevent delirium if she has to have another hospital stay?

Dear Reader: Unfortunately, delirium is common among older patients in hospitals, particularly after surgery or during a stay in an intensive care unit (ICU). One-third to two-thirds of elderly hospital patients develop delirium.

Delirium usually comes on suddenly.

People with delirium often have a change in their level of consciousness, which can go in two directions.

Most often, they are lethargic and don’t respond to things around them.

Less often, it’s the opposite: They are agitated, emotional (crying, angry), and very sensitive to light, noise or any change in the environment.

People with delirium also are confused. They may see or hear things that aren’t there, and may not even realize they are in the hospital.

Delirium can increase the time it takes to recover. It can increase the risk of falls, which can lead to serious injury.

It also makes existing dementia worse.

Some studies find that people with delirium in the hospital, particularly when it is more severe, are more likely to require nursing home placement, and more likely to die.

A new study analyzed the combined results of 14 earlier studies that looked at non-drug strategies to prevent delirium in older hospital patients.

They found that simple methods can reduce delirium by 50 percent and the risk of falls by 60 percent.

Dear Abby: I am a divorced mother of four. I have been single for three years, since my ex chose an affair over our marriage. I am successful and manage my home and finances.

I am, however, struggling with pressure from my ex to get back together. He had several affairs during the 13 years we were married. The pain and self-loathing were unbearable for me. He hasn’t changed. Yet he tells our 14-year-old son, “Jackson,” that he still loves me and “wants only to be with me.”

He also told Jackson that he doesn’t know why I have chosen to keep our family broken up.

I moved hundreds of miles to get away from this stress. I have a great job and a lovely home. My son stays mad at me, though. He has chosen to live with his dad, and when he visits he demands explanations for why I am not with them. It breaks my heart. I genuinely do not know what to tell him.

His father has already told him about the affairs, but says I should forgive him.

Ironically, I DO forgive him.

I want my ex to have a beautiful life – without me. What can a mother say to her son to help him understand that some things just won’t mend?
