Schoolhouse – New Lenox As Illinois was settled in the first half of the 19th century, schools often were established in each settlement. These schools were not free-tax supported schools, but rather “subscription” schools where parents paid to have their children enrolled.

Often, these schools were privately operated, and if they could not hire a private teacher, then a local minister, lawyer, doctor or some other person in the community taught the students.

In 1845, a Free School Act was passed in Illinois that gave voters the opportunity to meet to determine the possibility of levying taxes for the support of building and/or repairing schoolhouses.

When the third Constitution of the State of Illinois was approved in 1870, Article VIII stated “the General Assembly shall provide a thorough and efficient system of free schools, whereby all the children of the State shall receive a good common school education.” With this article, it was mandated that all counties in the state must organize elementary school districts.

In New Lenox Township, the first schoolhouse was built in 1832 and was located in the timber ridge along Hickory Creek.

Early settler Cornelius C. Van Horne taught in the schoolhouse the following winter. Van Horne and his family came from New York and settled in the township in 1832. Several years later, and before the town of New Lenox was platted, a schoolhouse

was located near the future village. Prior to the Civil War, seven wood frame schoolhouses were erected and located across the township.

Like most one-room schoolhouses of the time, these buildings had one door, four to six windows and were heated with coal or wood stoves.

A typical schoolhouse also had student desks that faced the blackboard in the front of the room. While outside amenities were lacking, each schoolhouse did have available water that was pumped from a deep well.

Of the seven schoolhouse buildings in the township, the majority had two or more rooms.

In 1869, a large two-story wood-framed schoolhouse, shown in the then photograph, was built near the center of town. This school served the local community until a new brick building was constructed in 1927. The original building, known as the New Lenox Grade School, originally contained three classrooms and a large gymnasium. The brick building served grades one through eight.

With the postwar population boom in the area, it became necessary to build more schools to accommodate the rapid growth.

Before these new schools were opened, additions and alternations were made to the grade school, including using the gymnasium for classrooms.

The name of the brick schoolhouse was changed to the Haven School when the new schools were opened. The school building continued to serve the needs of the community for nearly 70 years until it was converted to the administrative headquarters for District 122. The building was named an official Will County landmark in 2008.

Today, the old brick schoolhouse, shown in the now photograph, it is known as the Haven Administrative Center.

School buses at Laraway Road at odds with semitrailers

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Darrell Williams had just done his duty as the human stop sign of the day at Laraway School.

Everything had gone smoothly it seemed, which was good, since Williams was standing in the middle of Laraway Road in Joliet, holding back semitrailers lining the road both to the east and west of him by holding up a red stop sign as school buses pulled out to take students home for the day.

But it did not go quite so smoothly.

“That trucker wouldn’t let me cross,” Williams said as he got back to the school.

One trucker, apparently impatient after waiting for the buses, drove through after the last one had pulled out, before Williams could cross the road.

But that’s not so bad, considering other stories.

A former custodian doing stop sign duty a few years ago once jumped into a ditch to avoid a trucker who either didn’t see him or didn’t care.

Williams, who otherwise does maintenance work for the school, has not jumped into a ditch, yet. But he may have been tempted.

“I’ve had them blow by the stop sign sometimes,” he said.

“It gets pretty dangerous when they get a convoy going and they don’t want to stop.”

Laraway School has had a hazardous relationship with the burgeoning logistics industry growing around it on the south end of Joliet.

The good and the bad

The school is near the boundary of CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet. It is along the route to other trucking destinations, including a Waste Management landfill. And buses transporting students head to the corner of Laraway and Route 53, an intersection that

is such a nexus for semitrailer traffic that one truck stop has opened, another has been announced and a third is rumored to be under consideration.

The state-ordered closing

of Walter Strawn Drive in Elwood, one of the access points to CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Elwood, also is believed to have diverted more truck traffic to Laraway Road.

“It’s been a problem for a while, and it doesn’t seem to get any better,” school Superintendent Gary Bradbury said.

“We’re always concerned with the speed at which some

of those trucks are going past the school, even though it’s a school zone and there are flashing lights,” Bradbury said. “It’s

Joliet considers another tax incentive

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet is considering another ordinance aimed at steering dollars to local businesses.

The city is developing an incentive that would rebate the local tax on building materials for large projects if contractors buy from Joliet suppliers.

The incentive was introduced last week after the City Council approved a new bidding ordinance that gives local contractors an advantage when competing with outside companies for city business.

The tax incentive on building supplies was presented Wednesday to the Joliet City

Council Economic Development Committee.

City Manager Jim Hock said the incentive was spurred by complaints from local supply companies, who say they are losing business because their prices are as little as a half-percent higher than competitors outside Joliet.

“We want people investing in our community to buy their supplies from established businesses in our community,” Hock said.

The incentive would rebate as much as the entire 1.75 percent city sales tax on projects worth at least $1 million and as much $43 million. That would make the rebate worth between $17,500 and $752,500,

Hock said.

The minimum was established so the city does not process rebates for every construction job in town, Hock said. The maximum was established so Joliet was not “giving away the store” on giant projects, he said.

However, the committee asked staff to do more work on the incentive, including pos-

sibly adding a provision for smaller projects.

“I would like to see, after we’re done with this, something for the residents and the local businesses,” Councilman Terry Morris said.

Councilman Larry Hug noted smaller suppliers, which are more likely to supply smaller projects, also face a loss of business to competition

in nearby towns because of the city sales tax.

Without a provision for smaller projects, Hug said, “we’re just going to focus on the big players and not the local mom-and-pops.”

The Economic Development Committee meeting followed a full City Council meeting the night before, when an ordinance was approved to give local bidders an extra opportunity to win contracts with the city.

Companies in Will, Grundy and Kendall counties that do not put in a low bid will be allowed to match the low bid and get the contract if they are within 2 percent and no more than $20,000 higher.

Grundy County also received a state bid last year.

“We were fortunate enough to continue the contract and keep costs down to $52 per ton,” said Grundy County Engineer Craig Cassem, adding that there is no plan to deviate from the state bidding process.

But many public officials are tempering their expectations this year.

Last year, the state’s road salt industry experienced a shortage caused by the harsh 2013-14 winter.

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services has served as a marketplace where rock salt vendors can bid on municipal or county requests.

Last year several municipalities, including Plainfield, Channahon and Shorewood, didn’t receive bids through the program, forcing them to solicit bids themselves.

However, Plainfield still plans to go through the state bidding process.

Plainfield approved a salt contract of 3,000 tons at $107.20 a ton last year. That cost per ton was much higher than previous years’ state bids, Persons said.

Last year, the village went through the state bidding process twice. But Persons said if no bids are received on the first try this year, he plans

to discuss with the Village Board securing a quick bid through the village instead of the state.

The Will County Division of Transportation also didn’t receive a bid through the state program last year.

Assistant County Engineer Jeff Ronaldson said the county purchased about 10,000 tons of salt through Elgin-based Central Salt for $105.25 a ton.

“It’s about half of what we usually get because the price was doubled,” Ronaldson said.

Continuing state bids

Joliet last year renewed its state-bid contract with a slight price increase from the 2013-14 rate because it also bought salt through a deal with the city of Naperville.

Instead, it has relied on a partnership with Morton Salt, and will continue to in the future despite the supplier cutting back on supply and increasing prices to $126 a ton.

“I actually get a better price not going through the state,” Gretencord said, adding that the salt comes out of Ottawa, allowing the city to retrieve salt itself instead of relying on delivery, which could take a long time during harsh winters.

However, Gretencord said he doesn’t expect salt prices to go down to pre-2014 levels.

Mother’s Day weekend was the perfect time for Minooka’s first women’s wellness fair Saturday at Village Hall.

Inside and out were all kinds of local businesses and services, including Beyond Fitness, offering complete fitness training, Melaluca’s natural products and Little Learners day care, offering a children’s Mother’s Day craft and Natural Wellness Aromatherapy.

Fit4Mom Stroller Striders kicked off the morning with an exercise class, kids in tow, at Lions Park before proprietor Eryn Kubinski headed to Village Hall to man her table.

The Chicago Red Hots women’s roller derby team even made an appearance, skating around from vendor to vendor and bringing attention to women’s fitness. There were health and wellness speakers throughout the day and hot shrimp dishes from The Shrimp Barn.

The event originated with Kristin Rhoads, owner of Nurture the Journey Wellness Studio, and Kubinski.

The two sought a venue to bring together local businesses in one location to provide information about services for women and support small

Having it the day before Mother’s Day was no coincidence.

“We wanted to celebrate moms and women on Mother’s Day weekend,” Rhoads said.

Proceeds from the 15 vendors who paid for a spot at the wellness fair went to Pink Heals Joliet, the organization famous for using pink emergency vehicles to spread awareness of and raise money for women with cancer.

Pink Heals also held its first Mother’s Day walk on Sunday in Channahon.

Inside Minooka Village Hall were more tables, including Twisted Batter Cakes (everybody needs a little sweet in their life, right?), Jamberry Nails and gourmet coffee.

Presence St. Joseph Hospital and Presence Medical Group Primary Care, Shorewood, were represented by Dr. Shaily Macker and labor and delivery nurse Stephanie Miller, among others.

“It’s very nice to have all

these resources for women together in one place,” Miller said. “It shows you what’s available in the community.”

Rachelle Ferguson, a grief speaker, shared her experiences and hope with others who have been through the loss of a loved one. Ferguson suffered a huge loss herself, she said, and realized there were few coping resources available to her.

“People need to learn how to handle grief for themselves and around others, especially around Mother’s Day,” she said.

Most of the local vendors were moms themselves, while there were a few dads. Besides showing the community the products and services they offer, they learned a lot about one another and sharing resources with each other.

Vendor Laura Newberg of Twisted Batter Cakes couldn’t help but comment about the vendor at the next table, Michelle Reick of Perfect Posh natural pampering products.

“Her stuff is awesome,” Newberg said.

JOLIET – After Javier Reyes earned a degree in computer engineering in Mexico, he decided to switch careers and study culinary arts – which led him to cook for Gov. Bruce Rauner this year.

Now Reyes, 34, is ready to graduate Friday from Joliet Junior College, where he sharpened his passion for cooking.

He also was chosen as this year’s student speaker at commencement, where he will talk to other graduates like him.

“I’ve always been passionate about cooking,” said Reyes, who came to the U.S. more than two years ago to study at JJC. “For me it was just a whole 180 [degrees] from what I was doing, from computer engineering to cooking. Knowing that I can do this was amazing.”

Michael McGreal, JJC Culinary Arts Department chair, said Reyes is a “very intelligent young man,” who worked quietly but passionately.

“Where maybe a typical college student might get an assignment and they have other things to do – they may want to get it done quickly – that was not Javier,” McGreal said. “He did as best as he could possibly do.”

This year, Reyes was chosen along with 12 other students to give Rauner and state lawmakers a taste of what JJC had to

offer at the executive mansion in Springfield, JJC officials said. Reyes remembered that as a proud moment.

McGreal said Rauner and other state officials were gracious, even coming into the kitchen to meet with the students. Javier beamed with pride, he said.

“Javier was literally able to talk one-on-one with [Rauner],” McGreal said.

McGreal said Reyes has transformed in the two years he’s been with the culinary arts program.

He said he’s become someone all students flock to for advice on projects or techniques.

Javier Reyes “You can see the writing on the wall that he is going to be very successful in the food service industry,” McGreal said.

“He’s very level-headed and extremely focused and committed.”

Reyes said JJC’s culinary arts program is incredible.

While Illinois and Chicago [have] many culinary arts schools, JJC is closer to where he lives and it’s not expensive.

“Having been able to go to culinary school for the price of a community college is amazing, especially since it’s a great program,” he said. “We have some of the best teachers in the country.”

The trucks and warehouse development have not been all bad news for the Laraway School District, which includes one other school, Oak Valley School on Richards Street.

Financially, Bradbury said, the school district is much better off because of the business development and the property taxes it has generated.

“Because of these businesses, our schools are in a much better place than it was years ago,” he said. “It’s good and bad. We recognize that every truck that goes past that school represents revenue for our district.”

School for sale

The solution, he said, is to move the school. The district has bought 26 acres on Rowell

Avenue to do just that – some day. But Laraway School needs to be sold first, and it is for sale.

“We have 40 acres on Laraway Road,” Bradbury said.

“In order to have the revenue we would need to build a new school, we would have to sell that property.”

A neighboring landowner could add another 46 acres for a buyer who needs a bigger parcel, he said.

Laraway Transportation Coordinator Sherry Knight agrees moving the school is the ultimate answer.

But she also thinks there needs to be better enforcement of traffic laws.

Knight said trucks regularly run the red light at Laraway Road and Route 53. She gives orders to bus drivers never to enter the intersection on a green light until they are sure trucks in the crossing lanes have stopped.

And, there are other issues, too.

School buses are required by law to stop at railroad

tracks.

“They stop,” Knight said.

“The truck drivers come within an inch of their [rear] bumpers and lay on the horn. It’s crazy stuff.”

A different route

Something else that may help is routing truck traffic in another direction.

CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet was designed to move trucks along Arsenal Road to Interstate 55, said Michael Murphy, chief development officer at CenterPoint Properties.

Murphy said CenterPoint has talked with companies that have moved into the industrial park about which way trucks are going, although he noted CenterPoint does not control the drivers.

“We’ve really gone out of our way with all of our clients to direct traffic on Arsenal Road and out to I-55, but we really don’t control traffic on Laraway,” Murphy said.

But, he added, “We want to be part of a solution.”

It was Zeke’s nature to be busy. Through the years, this father of five children served in the U.S. Marine Corps and as an usher at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet. He enjoyed polka music at Sunday picnics at St. Joseph’s Park in Joliet and assisted with the St. Joe’s baseball program.

SHOREWOOD – Dan Russ of Coal City will never forget the call he received from The Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, where his father Richard “Zeke” Russ lived.

“They said, ‘Hey, your dad is going to be prom king,’ ” Dan said. “Make sure he has a clean suit.”

Zeke, a friendly, outgoing man who sat in a rocking chair in the lobby at The Timbers and greeted people as they walked through the door was thrilled to be prom king at The Timbers’ annual senior prom, Dan said.

“He had one of those attractive personalities that people liked,” Dan said. “He was a fun, outgoing person. People who knew him would say that he knew too many people.”

Faith Varga, The Timbers’ executive director, said Zeke varied his greetings, depending on the holiday – growling during Halloween and wearing bunny ears at Easter.

“After he passed, I can’t tell you how many people asked, ‘Where is that man?’ ” Varga said.

Zeke was exceedingly proud of his prom king role and wore his crown at every official Timbers event, Varga said.

During holiday parties, Zeke passed out candy to the visiting children while wearing his crown.

“Everything he did, he was king,” Varga said.

Zeke was 83 when he died Feb. 25.

Born and raised in Joliet, Zeke learned meat-cutting from his uncle, who owned a grocery store on Ruby Street.

Zeke later worked 20 years for the former A&P on Richards Street and became a certified meat-cutter, Dan added.

Because of his work, Zeke joined the Will-Grundy Central Trades and Labor Council AFL-CIO – serving eventually as treasurer – and became the business agent for the United Food and Commercial Workers.

After retiring in his early 60s, Zeke moved in with Dan. It was less a father-son arrange-

go there and do yardwork and maintain the grounds. He never took a part-time job; he filled his days with those kinds of things. He never sat home, never.”

About five years ago, Zeke had some health problems and recovered at The Timbers, Dan said, eventually moving back to his townhome. Zeke missed the social aspect of living at The Timbers, so when the stairs at his own home became too much for him, Zeke returned there.

Once a week, Zeke worked at the on-site shop The Timbers has for residents, Dan said, a job Zeke took on with great pride.

“I’d make a doctor’s appointment for him, and he’d say, ‘Oh, I can’t go. I have to work the store,’ ” Dan said.

OBITUARIES ANN CARDWELL Born: Feb. 21, 1923 Died: May 7, 2015

Ann Cardwell, age 92, of Elwood, formerly Joliet, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2015, at her home.

Born February 21, 1923, in Joliet, Ann was a daughter of George and Vera Sceniak-Danko.

She was raised and educated in Joliet, and on February 19, 1942, Ann married Howard L. Cardwell in Joliet.

She was a marvelous homemaker, and enjoyed cooking. Ann was also known for her love of dancing and sewing, and was most certainly loved by all who knew her.

Ann is survived by her sister, Mary (the late Joseph) Gaspar of Yorkville; special niece, Susan (Robert Banwart) Wilson of Yorkville, and several other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; and her siblings, her twin, George Sceniak, John Sceniak and Irene Eaton.

Family and friends will assemble at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road, in Wilmington. A funeral procession will depart at 9:30 a.m. for 10:00 a.m. funeral services at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 West Hoff Road, in Elwood, where Ann will be laid to rest with her husband. Raised in Mokena, Illinois where, following service to his Country in World War II, he met and married the love of his life, Bette Ethyl Mae (Betz) Edwards on June 6, 1950.

He and Betz raised 6 children in Mokena and were involved in St. Johns United Church of Christ, shuttling children to their many activities, and spending time with their lifelong friends.

His first career began at Northern Illinois Gas Company, lasted 33 years, and ended when he retired as crew chief in 1982. He began his second career as a cattle rancher in Antlers, Oklahoma immediately following his first retirement. For the next 19 years he tended his cattle, fixed and painted fences, trapped gophers by the hundreds, played Santa to the children of Southeast Oklahoma, and enjoyed seeing his family grow. In 2001 he took his final job as a fully retired gentleman, moving to Las Vegas, Nevada where he enjoyed golf, fishing trips to Alaska, and his many travels to Texas to visit his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betz; brother, Marvin; and daughter, Sandra.

Struggles persist as Illinois horse tracks push for slots

COLLINSVILLE – The promotions meant to drum up interest in horse racing at 90-year-old Fairmount Park among customers more comfortable staring at an iPhone than a tip sheet are creative and constant.

Horse Hooky is designed to lure those willing to skip out of work early each Tuesday to drink cheap draft beer and eat even cheaper hot dogs. Couch potatoes can rent sofas in the grandstand.

Despite the party vibe, attendance continues to plummet at this southwestern Illinois horse track and the state’s four others.

Purses are low, betting is down and horse owners are increasingly spurning Illinois tracks for venues in Indiana, Iowa, Ohio and other nearby states that have paired some casinos with ponies, according to track owners.

The racing industry’s solution?

Advocating for casino-like slot machines at the state’s tracks.

The near-annual argument has returned this year, hoping to be included should lawmakers finally agree as part of plugging a $6 billion budget hole to a statewide gambling expansion.

Prospects for more gambling brightened last week amid news that Gov. Bruce Rauner, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and legislative leaders had met to discuss creating a Chicago casino along with gambling venues in the south Chicago suburbs and Lake, Vermillion and Winnebago counties.

Lawmakers will hold a second hearing on gambling proposals Monday in Chicago.

“With the new administration, there are those who do business with the state who feel the need to have more direct contact with executive branch employees,” said state Rep. Dan Brady, a Bloomington Republican.

spending lobbying organization in 2015 has been the Ounce of Prevention Fund which is led by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s wife, Diana Rauner. The public-private partnership which focuses on early education spent more than $130,000 on lobbying public officials.

Officer allegedly under influence during shooting

CHICAGO – A security officer in southwest Illinois was under the influence of cocaine when he recently shot someone in the back at a public housing complex, authorities said.

Arthur Sargent, 48, of East St. Louis, was charged with aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, two counts of official misconduct and of driving under the influence of drugs, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Sargent surrendered Friday, and bail was set at $75,000, St. Clair

County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly said.

The shooting occurred at the John DeShields Housing Complex in East St. Louis on April 25 as officers investigated burglary reports. The security officers are deputized sheriffs and are permitted to carry guns.

D.C. official named Chicago aviation commissioner

CHICAGO – A woman who oversaw airport construction projects in Washington, D.C., has been named Chicago’s new aviation commissioner. Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Ginger Evans’ appointment Sunday. She’ll assume her new job supervising operations at Midway and O’Hare International Airports on June 1.

Rosemarie Andolino announced her resignation to enter the private sector last year. She oversaw the modernization of O’Hare.

Hundreds line up to be extras in Spike Lee’s ‘Chiraq’

CHICAGO – Several hundred people lined up in Chicago over the weekend for a chance to be cast as extras in Spike Lee’s film about violence in the city.

Hopefuls began lining up as early as 4 a.m. Saturday in the city’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood for the casting call which began six hours later.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and some city council members have expressed concerns about the film’s working title, “Chiraq.”

Alderman Will Burns has asked the city council to approve a measure that would push the state to deny Lee’s company a multimillion dollar tax break for shooting the film if it keeps the title.

Supporters say the film will bring jobs and money to the Englewood neighborhood.

BOSTON – For marine biologists at the New England Aquarium, it’s a super-sized Mother’s Day. Scientists at the Boston-based center say 17 new North Atlantic right whale calves recently have been born, adding to one of the most endangered whale populations on the planet.

Experts say only about 500 of the mammals classified as “critically endangered” are left on Earth. The Aquarium says the new births are a special cause for celebration because right whales historically have had a low reproductive rate.

The whale mothers gave birth in waters near the border of Florida and Georgia – their primary winter habitat – and they recently arrived in New England with their calves in tow. Six pairs of mothers and calves have been spotted feeding on plankton in Cape Cod Bay.

Case of pregnant girl, 10, divides Paraguay

ASUNCION, Paraguay – One of Paraguay’s leading churchmen acknowledged Sunday that the nation has been split over the case of a pregnant 10-year-old girl denied an abortion.

The argument over the girl has drawn unusually strong attention to the issues of child abuse and abortion, which is banned in all cases except when the mother’s life is in danger.

Sen. Esperanza Martinez, a former health minister, complained that the debate about whether

the girl is physically able to bear a child overlooks her own mental and physical wellbeing.

About 600 girls 14 or under become pregnant each year in the country of 6.8 million people.

Studies by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control say thousands of children in the United States also give birth each year.

Amnesty International has asked authorities to allow an abortion to protect the girl, or at least to create a medical panel to assess her health.

Police said Saturday they had arrested the girl’s fugitive stepfather, who is accused of raping the child. Local media quoted him as denying guilt. The girl’s mother had been detained earlier for allegedly failing to protect her.

Liberia churches celebrate end of Ebola

MONROVIA, Liberia – Drumbeats echoed across Liberia’s capital Sunday as Christian leaders heeded the president’s call to celebrate the eradication of Ebola in the country following a horrific outbreak that claimed more than 4,700 lives in this West African nation.

At New Covenant Outreach Ministries Incorporated, a fast-growing Pentecostal church in Monrovia, choir leader Ester Tamba led the congregation in a standing ovation to mark 42 days of no Ebola cases. That is twice as long as the maximum incubation period for the disease, and means an outbreak is officially over.

By REBECCA SANTANA The Associated Press HATTIESBURG, Miss. – One was a decorated “Officer of the Year.” The other was a proud recent graduate of the academy who had wanted to be a policeman since he was a boy.

A routine traffic stop led to their shooting deaths Saturday night – the first Hattiesburg police officers to die in the line of duty in more than 30 years – and four people were arrested, including two who were charged with capital murder.

The deaths of Officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate stunned this small city in southern Mississippi.

On Sunday morning, bloodstains still marked the street where the two were shot, and a steady stream of people visited the site to leave flowers or balloons. In the nearby New Hope Baptist Church, worshippers prayed for the fallen officers and their families.

“This should remind us to thank all law enforcement for their unwavering service to protect and serve,” Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said in a statement. “May God keep them all in the hollow of his hand.”

Marvin Banks, 29, and Joanie Calloway, 22, were each charged with two counts of capital murder, said Warren Strain, a Benjamin spokesman for Deen the Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Banks also was charged with one count of being a felon Liquori Tate in possession of a firearm and with grand theft for fleeing in the police cruiser after the shooting, Strain said.

“He absconded with a Hattiesburg police cruiser.

or four blocks and then he ditched that vehicle,” Strain said.

Banks’ 26-year-old brother, Curtis Banks, was charged with two counts of accessory after the fact of capital murder.

All four are expected to make their initial court appearances Monday at the Forest County Justice Court, Strain said.

A preliminary investigation indicated Deen had pulled over the vehicle on suspicion of speeding and then called for backup, which is when Tate arrived.

Strain said it was too early to say who shot the officers or how many shots were fired.

The U.S. flag flew at halfstaff outside the Hattiesburg Police Department, and red roses placed on a concrete sign wilted in the afternoon sun.

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Once a democratic socialist, always a democratic socialist. Once a scold of big money in politics, still a scold.

No one can accuse Bernie Sanders of flip-flopping over his four decades in public life.

Rock steady, he’s inhabited the same ideological corner from which he now takes on Hillary Rodham Clinton in an improbable quest for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016.

Here he is in 1974, as the 32-year-old candidate for U.S. Senate of a fledgling leftist party in Vermont called Liberty Union: “A handful of banks and billionaires control the economic and political life of America. ... America is becoming less and less of a democracy and more and more of an oligarchy.”

And now, in an Associated Press interview: “This is a rigged economy, which works for the rich and the powerful, and is not working for ordinary Americans. ...

You know this country just does not belong to a handful of billionaires.”

Some see him as a broken record, others as a person who has been telling the truth all along and just waiting for enough people to listen.

“The fascinating thing about Bernie right now is that the agenda has caught up with Bernie,” said Garrison Nelson, a University of Vermont political science

professor and longtime Sanders watcher.

During Sanders’ near decade as mayor of Burlington in the 1980s, during his eight terms holding Vermont’s lone House seat and during his near decade in the Senate, the message Bernie has stayed the Sanders same: The rich are absconding with an immorally large part of the country’s wealth, and ordinary people have been getting the short end of the stick.

Flyers fall in match to be remembered Loyola wins NCAA championship

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com STANFORD, Calif. – It’s hard to see the big picture after a tough loss. What Lewis and Loyola did for men’s volleyball, however, will prove to be something special.

“It’s one of those things where it’ll be an ESPN classic,” Flyers coach Dan Friend said. “The fifth game, 23-21, back-and-forth battle. You can’t write storylines like that in terms of what’s going on in any sporting event. The fact that it’s a men’s volleyball match, hopefully it’ll grab attention of more fans. If you’re just a sports fan and you turn on the TV and see this battle go back-and-forth, it’s a thrill to watch.”

No. 4 Loyola topped No. 1 Lewis in five games, 21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-27, 23-21 in the NCAA men’s volleyball championship Saturday night at Stanford.

For the past couple of weeks, people have talked about how the Lewis-Loyola matches – called MIVAgeddon on social media – are great for the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and Midwest volleyball in general.

After battling point-forpoint in the fifth game, though, the Flyers (27-4) knew that MIVAgeddon IV became something bigger than a Midwest rivalry.

“Honestly, it’s huge bounds,” senior outside hitter Greg Petty said. “It’s not even just for the program [Lewis], it’s for the NCAA volleyball in general.

“The coach is very happy where we’ve gotten the program to, and it’s been a lot of fun playing under him, but people can see that we’re expanding the game so it’s not just a west coast powerhouse anymore. It’s evening out across the country and that’ll help grow the men’s game to what the women’s game is.”

Loyola had match point, 1411 off a Cody Caldwell (11 kills) kill. Petty answered with a kill of his own and one of Lewis’ most reliable servers, senior

right side Eric Fitterer, stepped behind the line with the Flyers trailing 14-12.

The Ramblers had a hitting error to make the score 14-13, then Petty swung for another one of his court-high 23 kills to tie the game at 14 and Fitterer dished up an ace to give Lewis match point, 15-14.

The Flyers had a hitting error, then Thomas Jaeschke (20 kills) swung for a kill to give Loyola match point, 16-15. The teams battled back-and forth until Caldwell got a kill to tie the score at 21 and Loyola got back-to-back blocks to win 2321.

The entire match was a nail-biter because both team played hard.

“Those guys put themselves in a position to play their best volleyball in a national championship match,” Friend said.

“You want them to play their best volleyball. You could live with it eventually, win or lose, when you do that. Those guys went out and did that. In terms of what those guys did and what they brought, you couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Aside from Petty’s teamhigh 23 kills, senior outside Geoff Powell had an 20-kill performance, sophomore middle Jacob Schmiegelt had 10 kills, Fitterer eight and Bobby Walsh four. Junior setter Scott Fifer dished out 52 assists, while senior libero Lucas Yanez had 15 digs and Schmiegelt had eight block assists.

“It was what everyone was expecting,” Yanez said. “Everyone knew that it was going to be a hard-fought battle and that nothing was going to be given to either team. Both teams didn’t play their absolute best, but they played their absolute hardest and I think that’s what people should look at when they watch the game.

“I think that it surprised a lot of people. Going into the match, maybe people were saying that it wasn’t going to be a great match-up. That it wasn’t going to be good technical volleyball.

“In the match you saw some great plays being made on both sides. You saw teams that showed a lot of heart.

It’s tough to lose from Lewis’ standpoint, but for the community of volleyball which is very small, it’s nice for them to take a look at what’s really been going on in the Midwest for the last couple of years.”

As Petty said, historically the west coast is a men’s volleyball powerhouse. Recently, the Midwest teams have been performing so well that west coast players are deciding to go to college here. Yanez and Powell are two California players who decided Lewis and Caldwell and Jagger Kroner made the same move to play for the Ramblers.

Building up volleyball outside of the west coast has been a work in progress for years.

Hopefully with the national champion and runner-ups both being from Illinois, men’s volleyball will continue to expand further east and become more dominant throughout the country.

The eight Lewis seniors took part in making that a possibility. Four years of hard work, of hours of practices, lifting and video sessions led them to the

Lewis received huge efforts from Greg Petty, who had 23 kills, 12 digs and four block assists, and Geoff Powell, who finished with 20 kills, six digs and four block assists.

Eric Fitterer added eight kills, six digs and four block

assists, Jacob Schmiegelt had 10 kills and eight block assists, Bobby Walsh contributed four kills, a solo block and two block assists, Lucas Yanez added 15 digs and Scott Fifer contributed 52 assists.

.219 and owned a 20.5-13.5 blocking advantage against the nation’s top blocking squad.

In the finale, Loyola used three straight points to take a 12-9 lead and a kill by Caldwell put it within a point of wrapping things up 14-11.

But the Flyers rallied on two kills by Petty and a hitting error to force a 14-14 tie and then to within a point of its initial championship point after an ace by Fitterer.

Loyola used a hitting error and a kill by Jaeschke to move in front at 16-15 but Petty responded with a kill.

After Jendryk and Walsh exchanged kills, Jendryk and Powell did the same to create an 18-18 standoff.

The Flyers got another championship point at 1918 on a kill by Powell but Olson answered with a kill to keep the Ramblers alive.

Then Jaeschke and Fitterer traded kills before Petty and Schmiegelt shared a block to give Lewis a 21-20 lead.

Caldwell got a kill to deny the Flyers on their third championship point before Caldwell got a block to put his team up by a 22-21 score. Olson, Caldwell and Gevis were all in on their team’s final block of the evening to conclude the thriller.

Things didn’t start out well for the Flyers, who fell into an early 10-4 hole in the opener. But Lewis battled back to eventually tie things at 19 and closed out the set by collecting five of the final six points.

After seeing a 20-16 advantage slip away in the second game, Lewis looked to be on the ropes after the Ramblers jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the third game to grab a 2-1 lead.

But Lewis held off a pair of Rambler championship points in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth game. The Flyers collected the final three points of the fourth game on a kill

by Powell, a shared block by Petty, Schmiegelt and Fitterer and an ace by Powell.

“It’s been a season in the making. We might have had guys that weren’t as experienced last year that really worked off their tail last year to make this

year even better.

“We can look at the season, but it’s where we all came from.

It’s where we all grew up. It’s all where we grew up and started playing volleyball. Now, to being out here to put it together to make this year as successful as possible is really incredible to look at.”

STANFORD, Calif. – The biggest match ever involving two Midwestern men’s volleyball teams may go down as the most dramatic finish in the 46-year history of the NCAA finals.

Lewis University and Loyola University went toeto-toe through five grueling games before the defending national champion Ramblers finally managed to pull out a 21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-27, 23-21 win over the Flyers on Saturday at Stanford University’s Maples Pavilion.

Coach Shane Davis’ Ramblers (28-2) became the first Midwestern squad to capture consecutive titles and just the fourth program ever to do so, joining UCLA, Pepperdine and UC Irvine. The longest previous fifth game was Brigham Young’s 19-17 win over Long Beach State in 2004.

The loss was heartbreaking for coach Dan Friend’s Flyers (27-4), who handed Loyola its only two defeats before falling in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association finals and then in the first-ever MIVA matchup for a national championship.

Loyola was led by AVCA National Player of the Year Thomas Jaeschke, who had 20 kills and nine digs. AVCA Newcomer of the Year Jeff Jendryk also came up big, recording 17 kills, two solo blocks and seven block assists.

Cody Caldwell added 11 kills and 10 digs, Nicholas Olson had 10 kills and and eight block assists, Ricky Gevis contributed seven kills and seven block assists and Peter Hutz handed out 58 assists and had 14 digs and five block assists.

Not after the Bulls let LeBron James off the hook yet again, only to be haunted by “The King” and his heroics, as the 21-foot fade-away jumper cut through the net with the clock at zero.

Jimmy Butler didn’t even bother to show up and meet with the media after the 86-84 loss. Nikola Mirotic refused to comment. Taj Gibson’s session with the media was cut short after the reserve had an exchange with a reporter he felt was antagonistic.

“Tough shot,” Gibson said, when describing the buzzer-beater James threw up to win the game and tie the best-ofseven Eastern Conference semifinal at 2-2. “You saw him fading away from the 3-point line.

What do you think we should have done, let me ask you that?”

When told,“You’re the expert,” well, Brooklyn patience lasts only so long.

But the Bulls only had themselves to blame for not being up

Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving was playing on one good foot and was a defensive liability all afternoon. The Cavs were down 11 points with 40 seconds left in the third quarter. And as for James, well, he was less than stellar, entering the final quar-

This is Bulls basketball 201415, however, where lack of practice time because of injuries and restrictions has led to stagnant moments all season. The latest was a fourth quarter in which the Cavs were allowed to claw their way back into it, and even veteran forward Mike Dunleavy couldn’t wrap his arms around it.

“Yeah, but we’ve been like that all year,” Dunleavy said.

“We just can’t step on peoples’ throats. For whatever reason, there’s just too many stagnant offensive possessions. That’s just kind of been our Achilles’ heel on the offensive end. It’s not surprising. It’s disappointing, but it’s almost like nothing comes easy for us. We know we’re going to be in a dogfight, and expect it to come down to the last shot.’’

Asked how much lack of continuity was still an issue, the veteran responded, “Yeah, hard to say, but unfortunately we’ve been pretty consistent in doing it that way, so a little bit of getting stagnant on the offensive end, not getting into our offense quick enough. It’s kind of been our weak spot.’’

Even with that weak spot exposed, Derrick Rose was doing his part. After he played hero in Game 3 with a buzzer beater, Rose tied the score on a layup with 9.4 seconds left.

James drove to the hoop, and the ball went off Mirotic, so that meant 1.5 seconds left on the clock, and James eventually delivering. Not before over-ruling coach David Blatt, however, and again showing how Cleveland was winning in spite of their rookie coach.

He took six shots on the par-3 17th hole, which is not unusual for a Sunday except that Fowler played it three times. And even with the record-setting finish at the Stadium Course – birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie on the last four holes for a 5-under 67 – Fowler still had to face Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner, who produced big shots of their own.

For the first time, The Players went to a three-hole aggregate playoff starting on the par-5 16th, where earlier Fowler hit a 3-wood into the breeze to 30 inches for an eagle that made this moment possible.

David “Duke” Hill’s 3-for-5 day at the plate, the capper on a 9-for-14 weekend, helped the Joliet cause.

“Through the season, I’ve had days on and days off, but since the playoffs have started, the mindset is definitely on a different level,” said Hill, a sophomore from Providence.

“And I knew this was our last weekend here, so I wanted to give it everything I had. We were practicing with a goal in mind. Every pitch, it’s higher stakes.”

The Wolves scored four times in the bottom of the third, and Harper had to play catchup from there, but never caught the home team. Joliet led 4-3 and 5-4 before two runs in the bottom of the eighth put the game out of reach.

Lewis’ Fitterer honored for academic work SUBMITTED REPORTS ROMEOVILLE – Lewis’ Eric Fitterer was selected the Elite 89 award winner for the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship.

The award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s

JOLIET – Anyone with 1,000 victories, a national championship on their resume and their name on the field knows the value of the bottom line.

The coach of the Joliet Junior College Wolves didn’t like everything he saw in Sunday afternoon’s 7-4 Region IV sectional-clinching victory over Harper. But there was one thing he embraced.

“At this time of the season, you take the W’s and try to work as you go,” King said.

The outcome advanced the Wolves (33-23) to the NJCAA Division III District B championship series beginning Friday at Schaumburg.

Between now and then, King wants his players to get in the batting cage and work on their technique.

“I don’t like the way we swung the bats,” King said.

“Even though we got nine hits, and we had a couple big hits, it’s a trait of ours that we just try to pull the ball too much. We refuse to go to the other side. And they’re playing us to pull it. It’s a broken record that the kids are used to hearing.”

They heard it again after the game, King explaining in no uncertain terms that the margin of victory might have been three runs, but the game was closer.

Imperfect as Joliet might have been, the Hawks (13-32) were sloppier, with four errors, three of them by third baseman Billy Chandler.

Some bridge players follow their inner voices. But most should analyze each deal, considering the alternatives.

Here, South is in four spades. West leads a trump. (What do you think of that choice?) How should South plan the play?

After South opened with a weak two-bid, North responded two notrump, which asked South to define his hand. With a maximum, South rebid three diamonds, showing his “feature,” which is typically the ace or king of that suit.

Many players would draw trumps and run the heart jack, but should fail.

East wins with his king and shifts to the diamond queen. The defenders take two tricks in that suit, then sit back and wait for a club winner. Instead, declarer should draw trumps ending on the board and lead a low heart toward his jack.

If West could take that trick with the heart king, he would do best to shift to clubs. However, South would win with dummy’s ace and cash the heart ace-queen, discarding the diamond four from his hand. Declarer would lose only one trick in each side suit.

Here, if East wins with his heart king, South gets six spades, three hearts and one club. If East ducks, South loses only two diamonds and one club.

Finally, West made a poor choice of opening lead. He should have selected the club three. Don’t be afraid to lead from a king, especially around to a weak hand.

Should I see a doctor?

Dear Reader: We all have times when we lack energy; it’s a universal human experience. We often can pinpoint the cause: hard physical or mental work, an ongoing stressful situation, lack of enough good-quality sleep.

Most people also probably experience times when they lack energy or feel unusually tired but cannot pinpoint the cause. Sometimes, it’s a brief infectious illness that hasn’t produced the usual symptoms, such as sneezing, body aches or fever. Sometimes, it’s just a mystery.

According to surveys, about 20 percent of people will say “yes” if you stop them in the street and ask if they are feeling unusually tired for no good reason. Most of them will never contact their doctor about it, figuring it will pass.

Still, fatigue is one of the most common reasons people do seek medical care. My general advice is to contact your doctor if you’re so tired you can’t get out of bed, or if you experience fatigue or lack of energy that is very unusual for you – more intense or more long-lasting.

Two of the most common causes of fatigue are depression and just plain overwork. Fatigue may be a side effect of medication or the result of poor sleep habits. Or it may be caused by one of many illnesses, from chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, to anemia, heart failure or multiple sclerosis.

Start by talking to your primary care physician.

He or she will ask questions and perform a physical examination designed to root out any underlying medical or psychological illness. Many illnesses can cause fatigue. Describe your symptoms in
