Joliet D-86 board approves upgrade to student information system

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Public Schools District 86 board adopted a service agreement with a McHenry-based company to use a new student information system.

The decision at Wednesday’s Board of School Inspectors meeting was unanimous. According to the resolution the board adopted, the first year cost of Follett School Solutions’ Aspen Student Information System is $196,950.

The cost includes the transition from the district’s current system to the Aspen system.

Board inspector Jeffrey Pritz asked if the agreement was going to be talked about with the incoming superintendent, Theresa Rouse. The board approved her as the new superintendent at a meeting March 30.

Housing Expo to be held in Joliet Saturday

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet Housing Expo scheduled for Saturday will include neighborhood tours along with 31 exhibitors and vendors offering advice on buying homes.

The expo also will showcase the city of Joliet’s Down Payment Assistance Program, which provides help buying a home in the city.

“Homebuying is important to the city and it’s important to us,” said Gideon Blustein, government affairs director with the Three Rivers Association of REALTORS, one of the sponsors of th event.

“We thought this [expo] was a good way to educate people about the program.

If they think, ‘I’m not ready to buy a home,’ this is a way to help them over the hump.”

The expo will be 9 a.m. to noon at Joliet West High School, 401 N. Larkin Ave. Representatives from realty offices and banks, as well as housing counselors, will give presentations and be avail-

The Joliet Township High School District, along with the Joliet Public Library, Pace bus service, and other community organizations will be among exhibitors at the event, which also is designed to show the amenities of living in Joliet.

Bus tours that start at the end of the expo will go into neighborhoods to give visitors a better sense of the city, Blustein said. The tours also will visits five houses for sale.

“Not only do we want to have everybody get the tools necessary to become homeowners, we also want to showcase neighborhoods and properties,” Blustein said. “While we’re in the bus and going from property to property, we’ll also talk about the amenities of the neighborhoods and the history of the neighborhoods.”

Green gets three months severance; board member Smith leaving, too

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Rialto Square Theatre officials on Wednesday expressed confidence in the future despite the theater’s financial troubles after approving an exit agreement with general manager Randy Green.

Green, general manager since 2000, will get three months of pay in a separation agreement Rialto officials said will cost about $35,000.

Also at the eventful meeting, longtime board member James Smith announced he will resign in June when he will mark his 20th anniversary on the Rialto board. The board also approved 3 percent pay hikes in a union contract with its four building engineers.

Rialto management has been swimming in a sea of trouble since late 2014 when a celebrated plan for a new marquee became an albatross costing the theater $170,000 even though the project was abandoned amid public opposition.

Financial problems mounted in recent months, and Green was put on paid leave on March 21 after the board learned details about unpaid payroll taxes totaling about $120,000.

This week, Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said he believed the Rialto was close to shutting down as it became increasingly dependent on city funding to pay bills.

But at the end of Wednesday’s meeting, Rialto officials expressed confidence in the future.

Board Chairman Dan Vera said the opening for general manager will be posted as soon as possible.

“I hope in the near future we will be standing in front of the City Council with a new general manager,” Vera said. “I believe without a doubt, now that we’re going forward, our best days are ahead of us.”

Rialto attorney David Silverman, who negotiated the separation agreement with Green’s attorney, received a standing ovation from a packed room when he announced his firm was forgoing $11,000 in legal fees in a show of support for the Rialto.

“We do that to express confidence in the Rialto and to try to get people to join us to rebuild this organization,” Silverman said.

bstanley@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble were well over 21 when they went out around Bedrock, but if there had been a drinking age at the dawn of time, there would surely have also been a teenager trying to sneak into the bar.

“It’s always going to be part of the business. That’s never going to stop,” acknowledged Ken Groh, owner of Bedrocks Craft Beer and Pizza Bar in the Shorewood Plaza.

But new technologies and the online marketplace have increased the number and sophistication of fake IDs tavern owners and law enforcement have to deal with.

Shorewood Deputy Police Chief Eric Allen said village bars have seen an increased use of fake IDs in the past two years.

“And we’re seeing better fakes – high-quality fakes that are being or-

dered online from overseas,” Allen said.

Some of the 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds who’ve gotten caught with good fake IDs told police they were obtained from a website based in Japan. The fakes almost are indistinguishable from Illinois driver’s licenses and include the same holograms and bar codes.

“You make a few clicks, enter what you want displayed on the card, upload a picture of your face in front of a blank background and send a $100 money order. Five to seven days later you get two IDs in the mail,” Allen said. “The deal is always for two in case you lose one – like when they take it.”

One phony ID website also offers a discount to customers who refer their friends, Allen noted wryly. The site also says it is against their policy to make any identification saying someone is older than 23.

And if you can’t trust the anony-

mous overseas online entrepreneurs making bogus identification, who can you trust?

“Most people just change their birth year and put in all of their actual information since that’s easiest to remember, so they’re on a list that’s going to be sold for identity theft,” Allen said.

Groh, who has owned Bedrocks for nine years, estimates he’s confiscated 40 fake IDs in the last year.

“And I’m just one bar,” Groh said.

Allen said Skooters, another bar in Shorewood Plaza, has also seen an increase in fake ID use and both businesses are using “state-of-the-art equipment” to catch those with fake IDs at the door.

Bedrocks’ doorman uses a magnifying glass and blacklight tool to examine licenses. The zigzag “Illinois” on the front of the most recently confiscated fake glows much brighter than a legitimate driver’s license.

“That’s about the only [flaw] on

this one,” Groh said. “They just can’t get that right. Sometimes we’ve put the blacklight on and the whole front turns white.”

If bar employees believe they’re seeing a fake ID, it’s kept and turned over to police. Anyone who wants it back is told the police will arrive to run it through their system and make sure it’s legitimate.

“Nobody ever sticks around for that,” Groh said. “We’ve been offered money. We’ve been offered sexual favors, but they’re not getting in and they’re not getting it back. I’m a business owner – there’s too much liability.”

Shorewood has a $750 fine for businesses that serve underage patrons, and using a fake ID is a criminal misdemeanor. Presenting false information to obtain legitimate ID from the Department of Motor Vehicles is a felony.

“I know there have been [underage] customers who haven’t been caught ... somebody who looks like their brother and shows a [real] license,” Groh said.

“But it’s something we’ll always have to check.”

Bike path discussed at Channahon open house

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Flooding was the question on the minds of some of the handful of residents who attended Channahon’s Bridge Street Bike Path Informational Open House on Wednesday.

George Harris said his property backs up to the bike path the village is proposing. He’s not against it, he said after talking with engineers and village staff – if it doesn’t contribute to his already soggy acreage.

“As long as the water don’t back up into my basement,” he said.

Channahon Public Works Director Ed Dolezal said the bike path won’t make area flooding worse, and it might actually ease it a bit.

Strand Associates engineer Darcie Gabrisko said the village is looking at installing storm sewers alongside the path to help with drainage.

Ryan Doerrer, a resident and father of a young child, stopped by the open house to take a quick look at the plans.

“I’m all for it,” he said. “I live in Hunters Crossing. I think it’s a great idea.”

the canal and DuPage River, connecting neighborhoods to schools, parks and Channahon Park District facilities, Village Hall and businesses.

Channahon village trustee Scott McMillin has been a proponent of the path for years and was present at the open house. For children riding their bikes between the Highlands or Hunters Crossing subdivisions to the library or the pool and other park facilities, he said, it’s either busy Route 6 or the narrow Bridge Street.

The path has been in the works for a while. The village applied for funding for the preliminary work and was denied more than once. According to Dolezal, the village finally paid for Phase 1 engineering work itself, spending about $160,000 to establish alignment, look at environmental considerations and determine necessary land acquisition.

Phase 1 wraps up this spring, he said, and the next step is to look for federal and state funding for Phase 2 engineering. Dolezal said having Phase 1 engineering completed could help secure Phase 2 funding.

Easements will be used for the path, and land acquisition will be necessary.

Homeowners whose property will be affected have been notified, he said.

Bicentennial Park bringing back July 3 fireworks, boat festival

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park plans to bring back July 3 fireworks and a summertime boat festival.

The events will mark the return of once-popular events that were stopped when the city cut funding to the park amid recession budget cuts.

The July 3 fireworks offered a riverside setting for a celebration that preceded the city’s July 4 fireworks at Memorial Stadium.

“We definitely have voted on it and approved it,” said Jeff Barnes, a Bicentennial Park board member and secretary. “That’s definitely happening.”

Also definitely scheduled is River Fest, a revival of the old Waterway Daze held at the park that lines the west side of the Des Plaines River across from downtown.

River Fest will be July 23.

“It will be a one-day Saturday event,” said Deanna Opsahl with Bicentennial Park. “It will be a Vene-

tian-type event with lighted boats, live music, food and a fireworks finale.”

The park board also is considering a shortened version of Pumpkinfest, a fall festival that formerly was a weekend-long event. No decision has been made.

Bicentennial Park is reviving events in the wake of last year’s proposal by Joliet Township Supervisor Dan Vera to transfer control of the park to the township. Vera said the township would be able to provide funding to bring back some of the festivals that no longer were being held at the park. But the township and city never came to terms on a transfer of control.

The city owns the park, which has a board that primarily serves as a fundraising arm.

Meanwhile, the Bicentennial Park board also is looking for the city to provide more staffing for the park.

City Manager Jim Hock told the City Council this week that he has been asked by the board to hire a park manager to replace the last one who retired more than a year ago. The

park board also is asking the city to hire someone who would serve as a fundraiser for the park in addition to paying for summertime staff.

Hock, however, said he plans to hire a private contractor to oversee the park primarily in the spring, summer and fall, when it is most active.

He also said he plans to leave park summer staffing as the financial responsibility of the park board.

Barnes said the city had funded summertime staffing prior to the recession, and the park took it over as a temporary measure to help out the city during its budget crunch.

“We really thought we’d only do it for a year or two tops,” Barnes said.

nexation of the 13-acre Sunset Club will allow a connection to the path.

Minooka will be receiving a $1.1 million insurance claim to cover the cost of hail damage from the 2015 storms, which includes damage to the Village Hall roof and public works buildings, a pump house, a water tower, a wastewater treatment plant, several hundred streetlights and a couple park pavilions.

“We had quite a lot of damage,” Brennan said.

On the financial side, the village has six months of operating reserves on hand, which is required by state general audit standards.

In a move to save money, debt certificates from 2007 were refunded and new general obligation bonds were purchased at a much lower rate, saving about $245,000 in interest.

Looking to the future, construction on an 83,000-square-foot assisted living facility is planned to start this year and work on the McEvilly Road bike path will begin this summer with a late spring bid letting.

About 10 small businesses have opened in Minooka in the last three months and other projects are on the horizon, Brennan said.

“We have some promising things coming up, some commercial businesses looking at us,” he said.

Brennan proudly introduced Minooka Police Department staff, saying Chief Justin Meyer and the force are committed to reducing crime through crime prevention and community involvement.

After his speech, Brennan said the safety and health of residents and kids is one of his top priorities.

“I think of it every morning,” he said.

He also added that infrastructure projects need to get done before economic and village growth begins ramping up again.

MINOOKA – Minooka’s State of the Village address Wednesday started off with a lot of laughs after Grundy County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christina Van Yperen introduced two celebrities – Nick Offerman and Stephen Colbert.

Attendees were treated to a repeat showing on a big screen of the “Community Calendar” segment on Colbert’s “The Late Show” featuring Offerman and Colbert spoofing the village. The bit got a big round of applause from the crowd.

On a more serious note, Village President Pat Brennan touted the accomplishments of Minooka during the past year, including a $40 million investment in the community by AirGas and the December opening of the Hampton Inn & Suites, which has often been at full capacity.

Now that IKEA has rented the former Clorox building, several hundred new jobs will come to the community.

With state budget issues leaving funding uncertain, the village took a conservative approach to infrastructure improvements. However, the Interstate 80 and Minooka Road improvement project was completed.

The Public Works Department has taken an inventory of sidewalks that need attention and has created a road maintenance plan, which found that 51 percent of roadways in Minooka will need maintenance between 2019 and 2024.

“We have been working on the best approach of tackling this plan to provide a safe and reliable transportation network for the residents,” Brennan said.

During 2015, the village issued 349 building permits – 30 for new home construction.

Coal City Backpack Program gains tax-exempt status

mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – When the Coal City Clothes Closet closed its doors in October 2014, there was concern in the community that its backpack program would dissolve as well.

But organization president Cherie Sieger, Sara Smith and Pam Carlton teamed up to lead the charge in feeding the 100 kids each week the previous program provided for. A year and a half after the closet ceased operations, the Coal City Backpack Program now is sending almost 150 bags of food home with Coal City District Unit 1 students every weekend.

The program sends food home each Friday throughout the school year with students in kindergarten through fifth grade who are in need, so they have food during the weekend.

When school is in session, students can get meals through the free meals programs.

What may take the program to the next level, Sieger said, is its recent certification as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

“To be named a 501(c)3 is truly exciting,” Sieger said. “We can now apply for grants to support the program and apply at the Illinois Food Pantry.”

A huge part of this tax-exempt status, Sieger said, is when people donate food or money, the donation can count

as a tax deduction on that person’s annual tax return.

So far, the program assists students

at the Coal City Early Childhood Center, Coal City Elementary School and the Coal City Intermediate School. The new certification opens more doors for the backpack program.

“We’d like to move up to include the middle school,” Sieger said. “Some kids there have no food, too.”

The group spends between $150 and $200 worth of donations on the contents of the backpacks. They’re stuffed with – among other things – oatmeal packets, individual fruit cups, puddings, hot chocolate in the winter, juice boxes, raisins and macaroni and cheese.

There’s no doubt, however, that more volunteers will be needed for the program to grow.

Sieger said the easiest way to get involved is by finding the Coal City Backpack Program on Facebook or emailing coalcitybackpack@gmail. com. Monetary donations can be made to an account at Centruebank of Coal City, at 660 S. Broadway St. Food also can be donated at the Coal City Public Library and Coal City Village Hall. Sieger asked that it be peanut-free because of allergy risks.

The next packing event is set for 5:30 p.m. Monday at Coal City Elementary School in a room that has been donated to use by the school, Sieger said.

CHICAGO – In efforts to better track potential online child sex offenders, the Will County Sheriff’s Office was among local agencies in Illinois that received free training last week.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, announced in a news release his office connected local law enforcement agencies with the Child Rescue Mark Kirk Coalition to provide training and distribution of critical child protection software.

CRC is a nonprofit and global force of child exploitation investigators, police officers, digital forensic experts, prosecutors and child welfare agencies, according to Kirk’s release.

The software training will be used

by CRC to “build a global database to expose the secret places where online predators lurk,” the release stated.

“These records are compiled into a database and are retrievable by law enforcement officials 24 hours a day.”

Officers from law enforcement agencies across Illinois – including two Will County sheriff’s deputies – received three day’s worth of training last week in the Chicago area.

cial operations and investigations, said the Will County Sheriff’s Office does not have its own dedicated child exploitation unit that actively seeks child predators. That’s incredibly time- and labor-intensive, he said.

However, the training was “educational” for his deputies in the event a unit is ever created.

“Is it needed in the area? Yes. Anybody can get on the internet and find stuff. If we had the time and the manpower, [we would create a unit],” Ackerson said.

Ackerson said his investigations department works closely with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, which actively investigates online

child exploitation cases.

Illinois recorded nearly 1,370 investigations into child exploitation in fiscal year 2014, according to the latest report from the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services.

CRC supports the efforts of child exploitation investigators to track and arrest those who use the internet to steal the innocence of children.

CRC’s Child Protection System is used in every U.S. state and in 55 countries around the world, according to the release. About 8,300 investigators have been trained globally and use its system to detect, apprehend and convict offenders, as well as to locate abused children.

While the general public didn’t have to pretend there was a reactor meltdown, emergency management agencies across the state conducted a training exercise Wednesday at the Braidwood Nuclear Power Station in Braceville.

Will County Emergency Management Agency Director Harold Damron said the footprint of the emergency zone is a 10-mile radius around the station.

“With Braidwood and Dresden, we’re required to do this, essentially, on an annual basis,” Damron said.

“It’s not the type of exercise where fire trucks and emergency vehicles mobilize. We’re given a scenario and have to determine what we need to recommend [to address it].”

About 40 EMA employees were set to participate from the operations center in the Will County building.

Damron said the exercises typically last five hours, with federal emergen-

cy management evaluators “watching over your shoulder” as warning systems and communications are tested.

“There is time compression of a lot of things. Things could take four or five days if this were a real event,” he said.

The state’s Unified Area Command and Radiological Assessment Field Team staged at the former Dwight Correctional Facility. Exelon personnel participated from within the Braceville plant and their headquarters in Warrenville.

“It is more of an assessment than a performance,” said Bill Conway, Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program Manager for the state’s EMA. Past scenarios designed by FEMA have shown what would have to be done if a piece of equipment failed, there was an earthquake or the nuclear plant was attacked.

“Our last round of exercises was based on hostile action and we learned a lot about interaction needed between security and law enforcement and EMA from federal and state levels,” Conway said.

Traffic stop leads to discovery of mobile meth lab Tuesday The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A traffic stop Tuesday in Joliet Township by Will County sheriff’s deputies led to the discovery of a mobile meth lab.

At 1:30 a.m., deputies stopped a Chevy Impala near Doris Avenue and Gardner Street for having an invalid registration, Ashley E. according to a Sher- O’Connell iff’s Office news release.

After speaking to the driver, Ashley E. O’Connell, 26, police asked her, as well as passenger Anthony J. Gomez, 37, and a Anthony female passenger, to J. Gomez exit the vehicle. A search of the Impala revealed drug

equipment; a baggie containing what appeared to be methamphetamine; a sealed plastic Pepsi bottle with chemicals inside; and a nylon bag containing drain cleaner, Sudafed, a cold pack and ziplock baggies, the news release stated.

Police concluded the contents of the vehicle were being used to produce meth and the chemicals in the Pepsi bottle were being “cooked” and were potentially unstable. The Joliet Fire Department and the Illinois State Police Methamphetamine Response Team were called to the scene, with the state police team conducting a more thorough search of the car and alleviating any potential hazards.

O’Connell and Gomez, both of the 1300 block of Ridgewood Avenue in Joliet, were charged with possession of methamphetamine precursor and methamphetamine, and transported to Will County Jail. The female passenger was not charged.

JOLIET – IKEA has started construction on its future Midwest distribution center in Joliet, according to a news release send early Wednesday morning by the company.

The 1.25 million-square-foot facility is being built on 72 acres at the Laraway Crossings Business Park, located at Illinois Route 53 and Laraway Road.

The building should be operational by spring 2018, according to the news release, and will serve inventory needs of stores throughout the Midwest as well as customer fulfillment. Gray Construction will design and build the center.

“We are pleased that construction has begun in Joliet for our Midwest distribution center, which will support our growing presence in that region of the country,” IKEA U.S. President Lars Petersson said in the news release.

“As we become even more accessible nationwide by opening new stores, this distribution center will help meet the home furnishing needs of Midwestern customers. We appreciate the support of Joliet city officials and staff for helping advance this project.”

IKEA already had two fulfillment

centers on the West Coast and three on the East Coast. The company said the central location of the Joliet facility will allow goods to be received at coastal ports from both Asia and Europe and then transported inland to the Joliet facility.

The project should provide construction-related jobs and nearly 100 positions at the distribution center, plus property tax revenue generated for local governments and schools.

“We welcome IKEA to Joliet and thank them for recognizing the value that our marketplace affords,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said in a separate email from the city. “The skilled construction jobs and permanent IKEA positions will be a great employment opportunity for those here in Joliet. This project is the first big announcement for what is shaping up to be another great construction year in Joliet.”

Joliet issued permits for more than 4.4 million square feet of industrial development in 2015, according to the news release, and expects the trend to continue throughout 2016. Other recent arrivals from national firms include Amazon, Whirlpool, Saddle Creek Logistics, Hillwood and Mars.

Nearly two years after an 85-yearold Crete Township man was severely beaten and strangled to death, a suspect has been charged in his killing.

On May 14, 2014, Will County sheriff’s deputies were called to Alfred Hilton’s home in the 3200 block of East Bemes Road after he did not attend a church event, accord- Jesus Larosa ing to a Sheriff’s Office news release. The house appeared ransacked and detectives believe Hilton, who lived alone, was robbed, according to information provided in 2014. His body was discovered on his kitchen floor.

Recently, a tip led detectives to identify Jesus Larosa, 47, of Chicago as a suspect.

Detectives met with the Will

County sheriff and state’s attorney, charges were approved and a warrant for Larosa’s arrest was issued March 28.

While law enforcement looked for Larosa in the Chicago area, an acquaintance notified him of the search and he fled to Alabama, the news release stated. A manhunt followed, involving law enforcement agencies in Alabama, Georgia and Texas.

The U.S. Marshal’s Office notified Will County detectives Wednesday of Larosa’s apprehension in Dallas.

He was arrested in a Wal-Mart parking lot and will be extradited to Will County for prosecution.

Larosa is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and his bond is set at $3 million.

He previously served 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for a murder conviction and was out on parole at the time of Hilton’s death.

LOCAL BRIEF 1 injured in I-80 crash in New Lenox

NEW LENOX – Two vehicles were involved in a pre-rush hour crash Wednesday on Interstate 80 in New Lenox.

According to Illinois State Police trooper Aaron Palmer, the incident was reported about 3 p.m. on I-80 west-

bound just east of Route 30.

As a result of the crash, the right westbound lane was temporarily closed, Palmer said.

One person sustained minor injuries in the incident, according to Palmer, who was unable to provide further details about the crash.

The Rialto needed the second quarterly installment of city funding to pay about $120,000 in late payroll taxes that went back to November. The city also has provided guarantees that it will cover payments to performers, including Pauly Shore and Jeff Foxworthy, at two shows later this week.

Meanwhile, the Rialto has stopped booking new shows and has $79,000 in cash available with $470,000 in bills to pay.

Silverman said Green would not accept a separation agreement without severance.

“We tried as hard as we could to get him to resign without any payment.

He just wasn’t going there,” Silverman said.

Green’s contract

He said if the Rialto opted to fire Green before his contract expired in December, the theater faced the likelihood of a lawsuit costing up to $40,000 with the risk that a judge could award Green eight months of pay to cover the remainder of his contract.

Green’s contract made early termination difficult, he said.

“What we see in a lot of these con-

tracts, there is a provision of termination for just cause, and it outlines what just cause is,” Silverman said. “Unfortunately, in this contract it just wasn’t there.”

The board voted, 6-1, for the separation agreement with Mary Beth Gannon being the lone no vote.

Gannon also was the only board member to vote against the union contract.

The $1.25 wage increase brings hourly pay for the building engineers to $26.89, said board member Cynthia Tyler, who heads the board’s Insurance and Personnel Committee.

Tyler said pay for Rialto building engineers is “well below grade” compared with what they could make elsewhere.

Smith resigns

The board will have an opening in June when Smith leaves.

Smith was chairman of the Rialto board at the height of the marquee controversy and has, at times, been the target of criticism because of his longevity on the board.

He said after the meeting that he had considered leaving the board since giving up the chairman position nearly a year ago.

“I think any organization needs rotation,” Smith said. “I think they need new lifeblood.”

Country icon Merle Haggard dies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Country giant Merle Haggard, who rose from poverty and prison to international fame through his songs about outlaws, underdogs and an abiding sense of national pride in such hits as “Okie From Muskogee” and “Sing Me Back Home,” died Wednesday at 79, on his birthday.

Haggard’s manager, Frank Mull, said the country icon died in Palo Cedro, California, of pneumonia that he had been battling for months. His publicist, Tresa Redburn, said no official cause of death has been determined.

He had kept up an ambitious touring schedule, but the pneumonia in both lungs had forced him to cancel several shows this year. Mull said Haggard’s family was by his side when he died at home and they were planning a funeral for Saturday at his home.

A masterful guitarist, fiddler and songwriter as well as singer, the Country Music Hall of Famer with the firm, direct baritone recorded for more than 40 years, releasing dozens of albums and No. 1 hits.

“He was my brother, my friend. I will miss him,” said Willie Nelson, his longtime friend, in a statement.

The White House called Haggard a “legend” and said President Barack Obama was sending his thoughts and prayers to Haggard’s family. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Haggard told stories that people from all walks of American life could relate to.

“We’ve lost one of the greatest writers and singers of all time. His heart was as tender as his love ballads,” said Dolly Parton. “I loved him like a brother.”

Few faces in country were as recognizable as Haggard’s, with its wary, sideways glance and chiseled, haunted features that seemed to bear every scar from his past.

General audiences knew him best for “Okie From Muskogee,” a patriotic anthem released in 1969 at the height of the Vietnam War that quickly became a cultural touchstone for its anti-hippie lyrics proclaiming “we don’t burn our draft cards down on Main Street; we like living right and being free.”

“Okie from Muskogee” made him a hero among conservatives, but he softened on the counterculture and released the lighthearted “Big Time Annie’s Square,” a tribute to a hippie girl and her “crazy world.” More recently, he was a backer of prominent Democrats.

In 2007 he unveiled a song to promote Hillary Clinton and two years later he penned “Hopes Are High” to commemorate Obama’s inauguration. In “America First,” he even opposed the Iraq War, singing “Let’s get out of Iraq, and get back on track.”

He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Democrats are attempting to overhaul public schools funding for the first time since 1997 with a plan that gradually would shift money from wealthy districts to poorer areas in an effort to ensure the amount of money spent on education across the state is more equitable.

Hastert asks court to spare him prison; cites shame, health

CHICAGO – Dennis Hastert’s lawyers asked a federal judge Wednesday to spare the former U.S. House speaker time behind bars in his hush-money case and sentence him to probation, saying the 74-year-old has already paid a steep price in shame and disgrace.

A filing in federal court in Chicago – where the Illinois Republican is scheduled for sentencing on April 27 – said Hastert “apologizes for his misconduct that occurred decades ago” and is “overwhelmed by the guilt.” Notably, it contains no detail about that misconduct. Attorneys and the judge spoke recently about someone possibly testifying at sentencing who says Hastert sexually abused him years ago.

Part of the challenge is that state education funding is comprised of a variety of grants, many of which don’t account for resources some districts already have, so a property-tax rich district may get large grants from the state even though poorer districts may be more in need.

Under state law, districts are supposed to get a minimum amount of state money per student, though they haven’t been receiving that full amount in recent years because of the budget crisis.

On top of that money, some districts get additional funds for other things, such as transportation and for serving high numbers of low-income students, and make up the rest with property taxes.

Police spotted the stolen vehicle headed south on Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb and a chase began, Petragallo said.

The suspect headed west on Lincoln Highway, and police pursued the Equinox into Ogle County, where officers dropped “stop sticks,” special equipment used to puncture tires, onto the road near the entrance to Interstate 39.

Authorities say the man shot and killed himself sometime after being stopped by police near the stop sticks.

Police wouldn’t confirm the man’s identity.

“I don’t think the current system works well and I support changing it,” Rauner said Tuesday. But, he added that lawmakers shouldn’t hold up funding for schools if the formula is not changed.

Turner, the bill’s sponsor, said Wednesday his proposal still could be heard on a later date.

His bill was spurred by the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald, 17, in Chicago in October 2014.

The shooting was captured by a Chicago police cruiser’s dashboard camera.

Turner said releasing police videos would restore public trust. But police officials argue releasing a video could compromise ongoing investigations.

At least 20 states and the District of Columbia have laws addressing body cameras. Only 10 put the videos under open records laws.

Ex-Deere employee from Iowa charged with $250,000 fraud

ROCK ISLAND – A federal judge in Illinois has set a June trial for a former employee of Deere and Co. from Iowa who is accused of defrauding at least $250,000 from the Moline company.

Harvey Ulfers, 62, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, appeared Tuesday before U.S. District Judge Sara Darrow in Rock Island. She

scheduled his trial on wire fraud and money laundering charges for June 6. He was allowed to remain free on bond.

The March 22 indictment against Ulfers claims he defrauded Deere from 2004 to early 2013 in his position as a purchasing supervisor at the company’s Waterloo, Iowa, facility. The fraud involved the sale of scrap metal.

Illinois delays daily fantasy sports legislation

SPRINGFIELD – A measure to legalize daily fantasy sports betting in Illinois is being delayed as lawmakers continue working to craft the proposal.

The bill is among dozens of proposals that lawmakers are trying to get out of committees before a Friday deadline. But Democratic state Rep. Michael Zalewski asked for an extension Wednesday to hear the bill later.

Illinois is among several states with pending legislation this year on whether to regulate daily fantasy sports betting.

CHICAGO – The nation’s epidemic of addiction to painkillers and heroin is fueling runaway demand for a once-obscure form of housing known as “sober homes,” where recovering addicts live together in a supervised, substance-free setting to ease their transition back to independence.

The facilities are rarely run by credentialed professionals and are only lightly regulated – a situation that has prompted at least five states to pass or consider legislation to impose basic rules on how they operate. Some homes have been accused of tolerating drug use and participating in insurance fraud.

“The ones that are good are fantastic,” said Pam Rodriguez, CEO of Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities, an Illinois nonprofit working to reduce prison time for nonviolent drug offenders. But the rapidly expanding field also includes “people exploiting the vulnerability of the population and their desperation to find a safe place to live,” she said.

Sober homes are based on an idea that has been around since at least the 1970s, when many communities had halfway houses – group homes re-

served for the most desperate alcoholics with nowhere else to turn. These new houses cater increasingly to people who have become addicted to opiates. In recent years, the epidemic has touched more families who can afford to pay for care.

The facilities range from former single-family houses in residential neighborhoods to apartment complexes. The residents include people recently released from prison or residential treatment and others who see a counselor regularly or get no treatment. They must observe rules and curfews and

participate in 12-step meetings.

The homes are often run by former drug users who have remained clean after rehabilitation, rather than by doctors or therapists. Residents typically pay rent ranging from $75 to $150 a week.

There is no nationwide estimate on the number of sober homes, but experts say the growth is apparent.

For instance, Prescott, Arizona, a city of 40,000, has 169 homes. That’s one home for every 237 people, with more on the way.

“We have houses opening up two

or three a week here,” said Mary Beth Hrin, a Prescott resident who supports a bill to allow cities to regulate the homes.

One large network of homes, Oxford House, now has almost 2,000 houses in about 500 cities, up 20 percent in the last three years.

Families are seeking guidance in choosing a home and pressing for accountability for the money they spend there.

Some of the laws under consideration would require sober homes to be inspected and certified and subject to ethical codes and consumer protections.

After a scam involving inflated insurance claims for sober home residents, the Florida Legislature last year adopted a law effectively requiring certification of homes that receive patients from licensed rehab centers.

Florida has an estimated 1,200 homes housing 12,000 to 13,000 people.

Massachusetts recently set up a voluntary certification process, and bills are pending before lawmakers in Maryland and Arizona. Some proposals would require owners to undergo background checks, to refund money in some circumstances and to make inspection reports available to consumers.

Newtown teacher arrested for having a gun at school The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEWTOWN, Conn. – A teacher was arrested Wednesday for bringing a gun to the town’s middle school, police said.

The 46-year-old teacher, Jason Adams, has a valid pistol permit, but Connecticut state law prohibits possession of firearms on school grounds.

A telephone message seeking comment was left at Adams’ home in Newtown.

Adams was detained by school security after he was seen with the gun and then arrested by Newtown police who were called to Newtown Middle School, according to Police Chief James Viadero. Adams was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and released.

On Dec. 14, 2012, a gunman shot and

killed 20 students and six educators at nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School. The shooter fatally shot his mother inside their Newtown home before going on the rampage and then killing himself.

Adams has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, according to the Newtown public school system, which said in a statement that it has been working closely with local police.

“This matter is very serious and troubling, both the Newtown Public School system and the Newtown Police Department took immediate steps to address the matter,” the school system said.

Newtown police said the department has contacted the state’s weapons licensing and permit unit to make them aware of the arrest.

Trump eyes shift to policy ‘meat’ as GOP convention fight looms

NEW YORK – Republican Donald Trump declared it’s “great to be home” at a massive rally in the New York City suburbs Wednesday, shrugging off a defeat in Wisconsin a day earlier and instead, predicting victory in his delegate-rich home state.

“I love these people. These are my people,” he said to thunderous cheers.

Dozens of police officers amassed outside the soundstage venue on Long Island as protesters chanted “your hats are made in China” and “dump Trump.”

Trump supporters retaliated, declaring “socialism sucks!” and “leave this country!”

The rally comes as the GOP front-runner signaled a shift toward “more meat on the bone” in his policy speeches amid new signs of campaign discord after his stinging Wisconsin loss to rival Ted Cruz emboldened his critics and pushed the GOP closer to its first contested national convention in four decades.

Former gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, one of Trump’s state co-chairs, said the campaign received 18,000 requests for Wednesday’s event, although the venue holds just 3,000 people.

Said Paladino, a Buffalo-based businessman: “We’ve seen people just coming up saying, ‘Where has he been?’

Thank God he’s here.”

As for possible friction in the campaign, Paladino said he’s had no problems with Trump’s campaign manager.

“They do have a small staff – probably smaller than they should have – but these guys work 24/7,” he said. “I don’t know how they keep their senses about them.”

Both parties shifted toward New York’s April 19 primary elections, where Democrat Hillary Clinton and Trump hold big leads in early polls.

Still, Sanders’ string of recent primary victories has done little to erode the former New York senator’s overwhelming delegate lead as the 2016 primary season lurches toward a high-stakes contest in two weeks in New York.

“The core issue in his whole campaign doesn’t seem to be rooted in an understanding of either the law or the practical ways you get something done,” Clinton said in an interview on MSNBC. She suggested Sanders “hadn’t done his homework” on specific prescriptions needed to address economic inequality.

As the Democratic front-runner tried to undercut Sanders’ recent momentum, Trump’s grasp on his party’s presidential nomination appeared far more tenuous. Senior Trump adviser Barry Bennett shrugged off Tuesday’s loss to Cruz, but he also said the billionaire businessman would soon begin to deliver a series of “presidential, substantive” speeches on his policy priorities. That list likely includes immigration, trade, defense and taxes.

“That’s coming,” Bennett said of the shift. “There will be more and more meat on the bone as we go forward.”

At the same time, Trump’s team quietly worked to resolve problems with its young delegate outreach operation, a critical tool as the primary campaign speeds toward the possibility of a contest convention. The tension centers on campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, whose management style has alienated some would-be allies on the ground in key states.

For example, the campaign over the weekend fired the person running its Colorado operation ahead of the state’s convention on Saturday. The move was confirmed by a person with direct knowledge of the staffing situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

The issues come as leading Democrats and Republicans acknowledge a growing likelihood that Cruz could wrestle the presidential nomination away at the GOP national convention in July.

Trump maintains a big delegate lead, but Cruz took a big step forward with his win in Wisconsin. Cruz has no realistic path to claim the nomination by the end of the primaries on June 7, but he might force a contested convention by blocking Trump from getting a majority of delegates in the state-by-state voting.

More openness, for kids’ sake It would be remiss not to praise the passage of a measure that redefines a child’s near death in deciding what records should be released to the public.

In previous comments, we’ve pushed for more openness at the Indiana Department of Child Services.

Such transparency is desperately needed, not as a finger-pointing exercise but to help make sure all of us do a better job of keeping kids safe.

The calls for more transparency and a focus on the near deaths of children are taking place on a national level. According to the chairman of the Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities, new research suggests that studying near-fatal events of child abuse may be important because “near fatalities are similar to fatalities in almost every way we can measure them.”

Senate Bill 131, introduced by state Sen. John Broden, D-South Bend, is a step toward more openness when Indiana children are seriously injured.

While Indiana law long has stipulated that DCS records should be made

public in the death or near death of a children, it didn’t describe exactly what a “near fatality” is – meaning that those records were, in practice, never released to the public. Broden, a former DCS attorney, submitted a bill (for the second year in a row) that attempted to offer a definition.

The bill , passed unanimously in both chambers, was signed by Gov. Mike Pence last month. It takes effect July 1.

This is good news. But it is tempered by the bill’s wording that includes the possibility of a summer study committee to continue the conversation about confidentiality of a child’s medical records in the case of a near fatality. Legislators should not let this measure be watered down or compromised. Transparency is critical, and confidentiality meant to protect children actually does harm when it undermines public confidence that Indiana is doing everything it can for the most vulnerable Hoosiers.

All these things are lies – especially the impression that there are no long-term consequences, that such an intimate violence would have no effect on one’s life.

And he told her about a group that helps women and men with healing after abortion. You need healing, he had told her, urging her to seek out the Sisters of Life, which she eventually would do.

“The sisters were so gentle and so joyful,” she recalled during recent testimony to a pro-life commission that advises Cardinal Timothy Dolan in New York. The Sisters welcomed her and other women to a healing retreat, where forgiveness could be offered without judgment.

This is the side of the pro-life movement that isn’t often in the headlines, not unless a major presidential

candidate puts his foot in his mouth.

And so it was, when Donald Trump – betraying an unfamiliarity with the ministries and attitudes and heart of the pro-life movement – bought into and fed the caricature of the harsh anti-abortion right when he told Chris Matthews that he would advocate punishment for women who had abortions, a comment he later walked back.

Trump could afford women such as the Sisters of Life. When then-New York Archbishop John O’Connor helped found the group 25 years ago, he made a pledge that anyone who needed help could come to the church and be met with aid and mercy.

O’Connor helped found the Sisters of Life so men and women who felt as if their lives had ended with the abortion of their children would come to know better. He wanted them to be healed. He wanted them to know of the love of their creator, for them to have an opportunity to develop a relationship with him and with the children missing in their lives.

For women such as Veronica, it was a chance for transformation.

“Your life has not ended,” is what the Sisters of Life tell women and men damaged by abortion. And these men and women come to trust themselves and their children to the merciful hand of God. I spent Holy Saturday with the Sisters of Life, during one of the rare times when they are not out and about, healing wounds and saving lives. This day, they were in complete silence, encountering the love of a God who willingly would die on a cross for the salvation of man.

For the likes of the Sisters of Life, hope is not strategy but the answer to every question. If Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton or anyone else encountered them, he and she and our politics might never be the same. They certainly wouldn’t be as painful.

But despite graduating several key performers from last season’s 21-11 squad, coach Jim Lock’s Knights already are receiving much respect as the current campaign unfolds.

Central was 10th in this week’s illpolo.com statewide rankings and im-

proved to 12-1 after rolling to a 22-6 SouthWest Suburban Conference home win over Andrew on Wednesday.

And thanks to the combination of a quality goalie, a strong defense and a cast of offensive players who can distribute the ball and score, the Knights again figure to be in the mix for another state trip when they compete in next month’s Lincoln-Way North Sectional.

Cody Kolbus (six goals), Dylan Sterling (five goals), Matt Klock (four goals), Cody Torres (three goals), Andrew Smith (two goals) and Ryan Burke (two goals) paced the offensive

attack while Jake Burke was strong in goal behind a rigid defense to help the Knights grab leads of 7-2 after one period and 13-3 at the break against the T-Bolts.

“Jake is a third-year player as goalie, and he’s really gotten strong, especially with the Olympic Development Program that he’s doing with U.S. Water Polo,” Lock said. “He’s the total leader of our team, completely. On defense, we try to front everywhere and play in the lanes every opportunity that we get. If we can get teams to taking shots from 6 to 8 meters out instead

of 2, Jake should be able to handle most of them; and if not, we have a forest of hands that should be up blocking, as well.

“Offensively, we were really able to move the ball well today. They tried to slough in on Matt from all sorts of angles, and we got on our legs like we’re supposed to and passed the ball and we hit our passes. Cody Torres was a starter last year, Matt is a lot more dominant when he’s not double-teamed and we’re handling the ball on the outside.

UConn star Morgan Tuck to enter WNBA draft WIRE, SUBMITTED REPORTS

UConn star Morgan Tuck has made it official, saying she will forgo an extra year of eligibility and make herself available for the WNBA draft.

The Bolingbrook graduate, who helped the Huskies to a fourth straight national championship Tuesday night with an 82-51 thumping of Syracuse, told ESPN on Wednesday that she “won’t be returning to UConn” and will enter “the draft this year.”

Tuck came to UConn in the same class as seniors Breanna Stewart and Moriah Jefferson. She was granted an extra year of eligibility after knee problems meant surgery and missing most of her sophomore season.

The All-American has said doctors told her she has the knees of a middle-aged woman. So she has decided to play as many years as possible as a pro rather than come back to try for a record fifth national title.

The WNBA draft is April 14. Tuck has been projected as a top-five pick, perhaps as high as third behind Stewart and Jefferson.

One school claiming two team state championships in three weekends.

That never happens – except it did in February for Joliet West.

Coach Amy DiForti’s competitive cheerleading team was crowned state champion Feb. 6, and coach Jeff Bailey’s girls bowling team duplicated the feat Feb. 20.

Hmm, thought Glen Marcum and Joliet Township Human Resources Director Chris Olson, co-chairmen of the annual Joliet Township Athletic Boosters 12th Annual Night of Champions. Why not?

“A little bit of a change this year,” said Marcum, past president of the athletic boosters. “We are honoring people in the present instead of the past.

“Two state champions in the same year, a couple of weeks apart. That’s unique. So we decided to honor those teams and coaching staffs.”

This year’s banquet is scheduled Thursday, April 21, at the IBEW-176 Hall, 1100 NE Frontage Road. The social hour begins at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the awards at 7:30 p.m. The accustomed video presentation largely will be a tribute to the cheerleading and bowling teams.

In addition to the coaching staffs of the two state champions, Jeff Corcoran – who stepped down as Joliet Central’s boys basketball coach after the recently completed season – will be honored for his contributions to the former combined program and his years as the Steelmen’s head coach.

Former baseball coach Terry Piazza, who has guided the Central bass fishing team to a couple of successful seasons, also will be honored.

Longtime wrestling coach Pat O’Connell, who is retiring, will be recognized as the Steelman of the Year, and DiForti will be cited as the Tiger of the Year.

“Pat has been so supportive of Joliet Township in all that he does,” Marcum said. “And Amy has done an unbelievable job. We just wanted to step away and thank them.”

There sometimes is a surprise element to the banquet, and this year, Marcum said a fan of the year will be named for each school. No hints, however. He said the winners will remain a surprise until they are announced that night.

Tickets are $45, or $360 for a table of eight. Event sponsorship is $150.

kjasnica@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Anyone following the Herald-News girls volleyball coverage for the past two years might have caught on to something by now.

Ashley Shook is a big deal.

The Plainfield Central junior has such impeccable setting skills that whenever anyone talked about her team last season, Shook was the first name mentioned.

Next season, however, people might start talking about another name: Taylor Landfair.

Shook could be the “big thing” in the area, but she also will have “the next big thing” as a teammate at Central.

“Taylor has the ability to come in right away and help the program,” Plainfield Central coach Erik Vogt said. “There’s no question there.

She’s easily the top 14s prospect in the country. I’ve heard it from several Big Ten coaches. She’ll have the ability to come in wherever we need her to play, right side or outside. It helps that she’s currently jump touching 106. She’s unbelievably athletic for even a senior in high school.”

There’s no typo there.

A 6-foot-4 eighth-grader, who also can run the 20-yard dash in under 3 seconds, can jump touch 10-6.

Let’s analyze that for a second.

A good number volleyball players can’t touch 10 feet in college, but Landfair can touch 6 inches higher than that before entering high school.

Landfair could go down as one of the most athletic volleyball players the Joliet area has seen.

And it so happens, she is at the right place at the right time.

Playing with a talented player also will benefit Landfair in other ways.

“Having Ashley’s type of leadership is going to be invaluable to Taylor,” Vogt said. “She’s going to be able to learn a lot from a player that plays at a really high level over the past couple of years.

“Ashley is one of the only setters that has set the Sports Performance 18-1 team for three years. She’s played at a really high level and has won a national championship, two conference championships, and she’s committed to play at a really high level that Taylor will be able to play at some point. I think they’re both going to learn a lot and develop playing with each other.”

Even though Landfair and Shook are the headliners, the duo and coach agree that the supporting cast will be even more crucial next season.

Each year, Central keeps getting more successful in some aspect.

Vogt and Shook believe that trend will continue because the Central roster is becoming deeper. In previous years, Central had to rely on two to three players. This year, it plans to rely on everyone on the court and on the bench.

The defense will be strong behind Anne Obradovich and Katie Shook, and Megan Brock and Grace Brock will be versatile players for the Wildcats.

There are other players who can play multiple positions and will do what is needed for the team. Becoming a more well-rounded team is just another step in cementing the foundation, but it doesn’t hurt to have the best area player and the future best player.

“Since freshman year, we have gotten better every single year,” Shook said. “Even last year when we didn’t win regionals, we still won conference undisputed and won more tournaments than we have before. Our senior class as a whole, we want to try and continue that legacy and make the program better.

“Taylor is going to be a stud after she keeps improving. She’s going to be the next rock of the program because she’s going to be able to get so many kills and really be a big part of the team.”

“I’m super excited. Actually, I can’t wait,” Landfair said. “After Ashley Shook graduates, I’m going to try and keep building the program like Ashley and other players have.”

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Jason Day was lurking just outside Augusta National Golf Club, wondering if he wanted to go in.

The game just wasn’t fun anymore.

Even though he was set to play in his first Masters in 2011, Day thought it might be time to do something else.

“Golf is a very, very frustrating game,” Day recalled.

Whether he was really serious about quitting, no one will ever really know. Certainly, it’s not a consideration these days.

As the 28-year-old Aussie prepares to tee off in the Masters for the sixth time Thursday, he’s ranked No. 1 in the world and coming off his first major championship, one of the favorites along with defending champion Jordan Spieth and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy.

“I feel comfortable around this course,” Day said. “I know it sets up well for me. It’s a golf course where I can compete and play well and win.”

Working against Day: the last top-ranked player to win at Augusta was Tiger Woods in 2002.

Indeed, this might be the most wide-open Masters since the pre-Tiger days.

Spieth captured the first two majors of 2015 and nearly won the other two. McIlroy is missing only the Masters from a career Grand Slam. Day and 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott are both two-time winners on the PGA Tour this year. Two other Masters champs, Bubba Watson and Charl Schwartzel, also have victories in 2016. So does rising Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama, and let’s not forget Phil Mickelson, a three-time Masters winner and hardly ready to fade away at age 45.

“There’s a lot of guys who

have a lot of success here that really brought some strong finishes and motivation and some momentum into this week,” said Spieth, who tied for second in his Masters debut in 2014 before cruising to victory with an 18-under score a year ago. “I know that the people who are down maybe a few – three, four, five shots after the first couple of rounds – are capable of making up a lot of ground here.”

Coming off one of the greatest years in golf history, Spieth isn’t even rated the favorite.

That would be Day. “He can be the favorite,” Spieth said with a shrug. “We’ll go ahead and just do our thing.”

Day hardly felt like the man to beat before the Masters five years ago.

In fact, he had totally lost his love for the game.

“You have to perform, because if you don’t perform, then you’re off the tour,” Day said.

Changing the world, 1 project at a time More than 1,000 volunteers anticipated at this year’s The Big Serve

PLAINFIELD – The Big Serve: Change the World, scheduled for April 30 and May 1, is truly an event for everyone.

Scott Patton, a volunteer with the Plainfield campus of Community Christian Church, said this third annual, two-day volunteer event was created so everyone – regardless of age, ability or talent – could participate.

That includes the local businesses that donate the wherewithal for T-shirts, the post-event barbecue May 1 and supplies for the projects, Patton said.

The Big Serve’s coordinators are the village of Plainfield and four Plainfield churches. But its heart and soul are its volunteers.

“Last year, we had 900 volunteers, so this year, we hope to be over 1,000, maybe 1,100 or 1,200,” Patton said.

All the participating churches also have hosted their own services days.

Village Trustee Margie Bonuchi said that partly was why Plainfield wanted to get involved.

“Different churches were approaching the village for permits to do things in different volunteer capacities,” Bonuchi said. “What if we put it all together to do one big event?”

This is the third year for The Big Serve. Last year, Hope United Methodist Church in Plainfield and Plainfield United Methodist Church joined the village and CCC as coordinators.

The Rev. Sue Ritts, a deacon at Hope United Methodist Church, feels service is basic to the Christian walk.

“Church needs to be a whole lot more than the 65 minutes on Sunday morning,” Ritts said. “You have to be out in the community meeting the needs of the people.”

Ritts also appreciates the ecumenical nature of the event, as does the Rev. Sherry Scates, deacon at Plainfield United Methodist Church, who said service is part of the church’s DNA. “Although at times people seem divided by the particulars of their denomination and beliefs, we ultimately all believe that we can be part of making this world a better place,” Scates said.

Sleep duration key to good health Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard a lot about the harmful effects of insufficient sleep. But are there any dangers of sleeping too much?

Dear Reader: Over the years, we’ve learned sleep is important for a variety of reasons. It appears to be vital for forming long-term memories. It also helps you to digest what you have learned the previous day. Sleep promotes concentration and restores energy; it helps to keep your immune system functioning well and to regulate eating patterns.

The average adult needs seven to nine hours a night. Does it matter whether you get more or less than the ideal amount of sleep? That’s tough to answer – in part, because the effects of sleep are difficult to separate from other factors that can affect the quality or duration of your sleep.

Studies have linked short sleep duration – five hours or fewer each night – with a number of health problems, including high blood pressure and diabetes. Sleep deprivation also is a major contributor to car accidents, accounting for an estimated 100,000 accidents a year in this country.

Surprisingly, there also might be health problems associated with too much sleep.

Large, well-designed studies have analyzed the relationship between amount of sleep and length of life. Thousands of people have answered detailed questionnaires about their sleep habits and their health status over many years.

In these studies, the death rates for people who sleep the least – and the most – are higher than those people whose sleep time falls in the middle.

The reason isn’t clear. It’s possible a related factor might be responsible. Specifically, people with certain diseases and conditions may both sleep longer and die sooner. In other words, it might not be the

For example, people who sleep excessively might be drinking too much, and it could be the drinking that’s impairing their health. As another example, some people suffering from major depression sleep longer. Depression, in turn, is linked to heart disease and to suicide.

There are other common health problems that also cause people to sleep more and that may shorten life. These include: • thyroid disease; • kidney or liver disease; • a sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea; • dementia.

Some medications used to treat serious illnesses also can make a person groggy and sleepy. That’s another way sleeping long hours might be linked to dying sooner.

In summary, I’d say there is little evidence that simply sleeping unusually long hours – such as more than nine hours a night – actually shortens your life. And there are plenty of healthy people who regularly sleep more than nine hours a night.

But if you asked your question because you’ve found yourself sleeping a lot more than you used to, check it out with your doctor. The long hours might not be hurting you, but they could be a sign of an underlying medical condition that could hurt you.

wondering how to approach a situation following a visit with some relatives.

We enjoyed a wonderful visit, and they were very nice to put us up in their guest room. A few days into our stay, I woke up with strange and very itchy bites on my legs and shoulders.

When I mentioned it to our host, she quickly supplied me with some itch cream and changed the subject.

After we returned home, we met a few of our relatives, and they mentioned this particular household was experiencing a bed bug problem. I was shocked and a little hurt they didn’t mention the infestation or warn us ahead of time.

We’re in the process of making sure we didn’t bring any of these critters home, but if we must hire an exterminator or replace furniture, we will be in a bind financially.

In this deal, South answers two clubs with two hearts, showing a doubleton spade and four hearts.

When North supports diamonds, which is game-forcing (no stopping on dimes), South, without a club stopper or honor-doubleton in spades, continues with three hearts.

North now knows that his singleton club is excellent. It is effectively a 34-point deck (10 points in each of three suits and 4 for the club ace). To make a small slam, you typically need 33 out of 40 points; using this ratio gives 28 out of 34. So, North uses (Roman Key Card) Blackwood and puts South into six diamonds.

West leads the club king, then shifts to his spade to dummy’s ace.

How should South continue?

Declarer should play a trump to his hand, ruff a club high on the board, draw trumps, and claim. He takes four spades, three hearts, four diamonds and the club ruff.
