Police: Man stole car with three kids inside

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police say a man kidnapped three children while stealing a woman’s car Sunday night in Joliet.

About 9:10 p.m., a 31-yearold woman returned from grocery shopping to her home in the 400 block of South Joliet Street, according to Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory. As she began unloading her 2000 Cadillac DeVille, her 7-year-old daughter, 6-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son remained inside the running vehicle.

“As she was taking the groceries out, she saw a man run up and drive off in the vehicle with her children,” Gregory said.

The woman called police, who were preparing to issue an Amber Alert at 9:30 p.m.

when an officer on patrol at Evergreen Terrace spotted the DeVille driving over the Cass Street bridge.

Gregory said the Cadillac sped away when the officer attempted to pull it over and a chase ensued onto westbound Jefferson Street. The pursuit ended when the driver of the Cadillac pulled into the Jewel parking Anthony lot at Jefferson Street and MidB. Wright land Avenue.

Anthony B. Wright, 33, of the 500 block of South Des Plaines Street, was arrested on charges of aggravated kidnapping, auto theft, aggravated fleeing from police, driving with a suspended license, improper lane use and two counts

of disregarding a stop sign.

The children were unharmed and returned to their mother, who does not know Wright.

“He was interviewed by investigators. We believe the opportunity to take the vehicle prompted the incident. The children were not his target,” Gregory said.

In April 2007, Wright was at his sister’s house in the 300 block of Mohawk Street when he became upset about a man she was seeing and fired a gun in the air.

According to The Herald-News archives, Wright kicked in the door and fired shots inside the house. He was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to reckless discharge of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm by a felon.

Description of truck driven by shooting suspect released

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Police reached out to state and federal agencies Monday to assist in the apprehension of the suspect in last week’s Coal City shooting.

“The only thing we’ve done different today in our search for the suspect is we have contacted state and federal agencies to help find him,” Sgt. Tom

“By reaching out to federal agencies they can assist us so he won’t be able to board an airplane.”

Authorities said Webster is an over-the-road truck driver.

The truck is described as a 2007 red Freightliner with an Illinois registration P851182.

Webster is described as a 5 foot 11 inches, 170 pound, black male with brown hair and brown eyes, according to a news release from Coal City police.

If anyone sees Webster or his semitrailer, contact law enforcement immediately, do not attempt to make contact with Webster, police said in the news release.

Authorities responded at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday after numerous residents reported hearing shots fired near the Shell gas station at 725 E. Divi-

sion St. in Coal City.

Adam Fierro of Braidwood, the owner of Horse Shoe Transportation Company of Braidwood, was found bleeding from gunshot wounds to his body after his vehicle struck an unoccupied vehicle at the Shell station.

During an altercation, Fierro was allegedly shot at several times by Webster, who is an ex-employee at Horse Shoe, according to Coal City police.

Authorities have called the shooting an isolated incident.

The victim was taken in critical condition Wednesday night to Morris Hospital, then was airlifted to Loyola Hospital in Maywood. On Monday, he was listed in stable condition, according to Logan.

Coal City police are asking anyone with information on the case or on the suspect call 815-634-2341.

Joliet teen shot

JOLIET – A 17-year-old boy was shot during a fight Monday afternoon.

Joliet police said several people were fighting about 4:45 p.m. near Broadway and Spring streets before shots were reported.

The teen remained hospitalized Monday night, but his injuries did not appear to be life threatening, according to police reports.

No suspect information was available Monday.

UNDER CONTROL Forest Preserve District sets fires to protect natural landscape

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com HOMER GLEN – For several centuries, a good portion of the North American continent burned regularly, thanks to naturally sparked fires.

Then the Europeans arrived, suppressing fire’s major role in evolving landscapes.

The only solution to preserving prairies, savannas and other nature preserves in the region is to set fire to the land from time to time, said Dave Robson, natural resources management supervisor for the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

“The biggest reason anybody does controlled burns, at least in the Midwest, is because our landscapes are natural, undisturbed. They’ve evolved and have been maintained under the influence of fire,” Robson said. “For cen-

turies, fire disturbance was a normal, expected part of the natural ecology.”

In the past several decades, ecologists have realized the importance of fire disturbance and have started putting fire back on the ground to “mimic and recreate” that activity, he said.

“Prairie requires the occasional disturbance from fire in order to continue to be prairie,” Robson said. “Without fire, trees move in. … If enough time goes by, it’ll end up being a woodland.”

Around this time of year, before spring is in full bloom, the district’s natural resource management staff conducts carefully engineered burns to protect the natural landscape.

Invasive species are often the primary targets to keep trees from creeping onto the prairie and allow for the growth of native species and other plant

varieties.

Carefully executed burns

If you saw smoke rising in the sky near Hadley Valley Preserve in Homer Glen on Monday, that was the controlled burn process playing out.

About a dozen members of the district’s burn crew were out in full force at the Hadley preserve – where prairie restoration has been ongoing since 2008. With humidity and temperatures rising with spring’s arrival, Monday’s burn could be the district’s last of the season.

The process is more involved than simply dousing flames with fuel and watching the vegetation burn, said Floyd Catchpole, who led burn efforts Monday. Crew leaders constantly monitor wind

LOCKPORT – With weather conditions ripe for open burns to get out of control in a matter of minutes, area firefighters have some advice for property owners: Hold off.

“Right now, the conditions are just right. The winds are high, the weather is warm and the leaves are dry,” Lockport Township Deputy Fire Chief John Kure said.

Only those trained to conduct controlled burns, such as natural resources staff with the Forest Preserve District of Will County, should be conducting them, he said.

Backyard burning is a common cause of fires getting out of control, Troy Township Fire Protection District Chief Andy Doyle said. But cigarette butts were found to be the culprit in minor fires Sunday afternoon along Interstate 55 in Troy Township.

“That’s how dry it is out there,” Doyle said.

Doyle and Kure said they hope this week isn’t a repeat of last week, when firefighters were called out to take down two fast-moving brush fires within hours of each other Wednesday in unin-

corporated Troy Township and then Lockport Township.

Kure said last week’s fire at 1 Genstar Lane in unincorporated Lockport Township broke out in a parking lot used to park semitrailers and other vehicles. Almost two dozen vehicles were destroyed, and a handful of semitrailers were damaged, he said.

Someone was conducting an open burn in the general vicinity that day, Kure said.

“That’s what we’re looking at right now, but the fire is still under investigation,” he said. “We want to rule out everything before [we come to a conclusion].”

Earlier that same day in Troy Township, Doyle said someone was burning brush southwest of the industrial buildings on Mound Road when that fire got out of control.

“They may think they’ll be able to get it under control. But once the wind picks up and the embers fly, they can’t control it,” Doyle said.

“That’s exactly what happened last week.”

Firefighters urge property owners and homeowners to hold off burning leaves or other materials until the winds die down and the ground has a chance to saturate.

E-commerce operator headed for Joliet Company to bring at least 500 jobs

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An unnamed e-commerce company will bring at least 500 jobs to Joliet, the owner of the property told the City Council on Monday.

The council approved a preliminary plat for the project with some discussion about how to regulate the expected increase in truck traffic from that and other projects moving into the Laraway Crossings Business Park along Illinois 53.

coming from the e-commerce retailer, said Dave Poquette with Global Logistics Properties, which owns the vacant warehouse slated for redevelopment.

“I know it’s 500-plus,” Poquette told the council.

He noted that the plan calls for 800 parking spots, and the facility will run two shifts.

“It’s all new positions,” Poquette said in response to a question of whether the jobs would be relocated from elsewhere in the area. “They’re penetrating the market for the first time.”

The plan is to have the facility operational by mid-October and doing business soon after, he said.

City officials said they either could not say who was moving in or did not know.

“I don’t think we can publicly say who they are, but I’m sure we all know who they

There was some speculation that Amazon was moving into Joliet.

Poquette described the company as “a nationally oriented Internet retailer.”

“Their goal is to be operational by the holidays,” he said.

The company would be ahead of two other major projects slated for the Laraway Crossings Business Park.

IKEA in February announced that it was moving forward with previously an-

nounced plans to build a 1.4 million-square-foot distribution center in the business park. The project was first announced in 2007 but put on hold. IKEA said it plans to be in operation by summer of 2017.

Cadence Premier Logistics has presented plans to the city for relocating its corporate office and distribution operations from Alsip to Joliet. The company said 120 jobs would be relocated but it expected to add more than 100 jobs in coming years.

The additional operations would mean more trucks.

City officials want a traffic light at Emerald Drive, which

is the entryway off of Illinois 53 that will lead to the new facilities coming to the business park.

The council approved an escrow account that will include a $150,000 contribution from the owners of the vacant warehouse to be occupied by the e-commerce operator.

That money will be saved for future improvements at Illinois 53 and Emerald.

In other business, the council: • Approved a temporary sign ordinance that would put new restrictions on the use of banners, flags and other types of temporary signs; • Approved a handbook that included rules for removing council members who stop attending meetings, a provision that was sought after Councilwoman Susie Barber missed months of meetings before she resigned.

Plainfield trustees approve purchase of 220 trees

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Trustees approved the purchase of 220 parkway trees as the village continues its Emerald Ash Borer infested tree replacement program.

The trees will be bought from the Suburban Tree Consortium at a cost not to exceed $75,000, or about $341 a tree.

The assortment of different tree types will replace ash trees that were removed by the village in the past couple of years.

“We’ve removed over 50 percent of the ash trees within our community,” Village Administrator Brian Murphy said. “The expectation still is that the next two to three years we’ll remove all of the ash trees.”

many other municipalities across several suburban counties, has witnessed many of its ash trees die or become diseased because of infestation by the invasive Emerald Ash Borer beetle.

Staff, with approval of the board, bought trees from the consortium a number of times since the ash tree replacement program. The consortium works with tree nurseries to provide low rates for high-quality trees to participating mem-

bers.

Last June, the village bought 500 trees at a cost of $150,000 from the Suburban Tree Consortium.

Trustee Bill Lamb asked if the public works department had considered treatment possibilities instead of replacing infested trees.

Some communities around Plainfield, including Shorewood and Channahon, have been using a treatment called Tree-age to save some of their

infested trees.

Murphy said staff has looked into the treatment option, but it was about 68 percent effective and expensive. He also said the village looked into natural deterrents like predators.

“There was something called the parasitic wasp that has been successful,” he said.

“But I’m not keen on us bringing a wasp ... into the community.”

Other items

The Village Board approved a resolution urging Gov. Bruce Rauner and the state legislature to protect full funding of Local Government Distributive Fund revenues, and kept the annual Farmer’s Market at the same location as last year, at the southwest corner of Lockport Street and Route 59.

Trustees also approved ceding private activity bonding authority to the Will Kankakee Regional Development Authority, an agency that previously has helped secure funds for a senior housing project in Plainfield.

Several public works contracts were approved, including $13,200 to Strand Engineering Inc. for bridge maintenance throughout the village, and Phase 1 and 2 engineering services for the 127th Street and 248th Avenue bike path and traffic signal work to Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick Inc. not to exceed $45,531.

The board also approved an intergovernmental agreement with Wheatland Township Road District for 127th Street resurfacing for $51,813.25 plus engineering fees.

election irregularities to Election Fraud Hotline THE HERALD–NEWS

JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow urges residents to report election irregularities to his Election Fraud Hotline during Tuesday’s election.

Residents are encouraged to report inappropriate activity, such as passing out campaign literature or other acts of electioneering, either inside or too close to polling places, according to a news release from Glasgow.

The Election Fraud Ho-

tline number is 815-727-8872.

Glasgow has assigned two-person teams, each consisting of one assistant state’s attorney and one investigator, to travel to polling places where irregularities are reported on Election Day, according to the news release.

Assistant state’s attorneys not assigned to specific teams will be available for dispatch from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office to investigate allegations of election irregularities reported to the hotline.

JOLIET – A man told police he was shot by someone in a passing car early Saturday.

The 25-year-old victim was walking at 12:53 a.m. near Fairmont Avenue and Robin Lane when a red Dodge Charger drove by, according to Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.

“The victim said a man leaned out of the rear passenger seat window with a handgun and fired over the top of the car,” Gregory said. “The victim turned to run and was struck in the right buttock.”

The victim was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for an injury that was not considered life threatening.

Gregory said Joliet and Will County Sheriff’s police broadcast a description of the vehicle and found the Charger and a black 2014 Mazda near Cass and Collins streets. While no weapons were found inside the Charger, a semi-automatic handgun was discovered inside the Mazda, according to Gregory.

“The caliber of the weapon is the same as shell casings found at the scene,” Gregory said.

Arshey T. Harris, 21, of the first block of Pheasant Run Road, was arrested on a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. A 20-year-old man and two 19-year-old men also were arrested, but released without being charged.

Police: Doctor stalked ex-wife’s lawyer, vandalized gravesite

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com MOKENA – A doctor allegedly desecrated a grave to upset his ex-wife’s divorce attorney.

Robert A. Bonzani, 49, was arrested Wednesday on charges of stalking, theft and vandalism.

Bonzani is a urologist at 21st Century Urology in Orland Park.

Court records show Bonzani’s wife filed for divorce in 2010 and is represented by Edward Jaquays.

Will County State’s Attorney spokesman Charles Pel-

kie said Bonzani located the gravesite of Jaquays’ daughter and went there Dec. 23.

“He defaced the tombstone with spray paint ..., stole an artificial tree and photos, and sent a letter to Jaquays and his wife referencing their daughter [and regarding the desecration] for the purpose of inflicting emotional distress,” Pelkie said.

Kiley Jaquays, 17, died Dec. 24, 2002, when she fell from a ledge while hiking in a cave in Utah.

JOLIET – A police officer will not face charges for fatally shooting a robbery suspect last month.

Shaquille C. Barrow, 20, was reportedly reaching for a loaded .357 magnum handgun while trying to escape patrol officer Dennis Carroll on March 2 near First Avenue and Richards Street. Carroll was called to the area after Barrow and Shawn M. Miller threatened to shoot a woman after stealing her wallet, according to Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton.

Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow reviewed police reports, witness statements and state law concerning the use of deadly force before releasing his findings last week.

“Officer Carroll was clearly justified in the use of deadly force,” Glasgow said in a statement. “He showed tremendous restraint prior to moving to the deadly force phase.”

Police say Barrow was a self-admitted gang member with a lengthy criminal history, including nine arrests and three convictions, two for weapons offenses. Barrow was on parole for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon when he was shot.

Miller, 21, allegedly fled the scene after the shooting.

He is being sought on charges of theft, obstruction of justice and assault.

The 18,000-square-foot building, at 16 W. Van Buren St. inside the St. Bonaventure Campus in downtown Joliet, connects students to educational resources in the downtown area, including professional contacts and mentors.

“This building was actually a nonproducing asset for BMO Harris Bank,” USF President Arvid Johnson said. “They wanted to use it as a positive aspect for the community, and it resulted in the donation of this building [to USF]. The city of Joliet has a vision for this area, and we will be an anchor of a

growing city center.”

The center, which began classes in August 2014, is named for the late Robert W. Plaster, a Missouri entrepreneur whose foundation gave a six-figure gift to the university.

The center is more than just a building of classrooms; it offers learning environments that benefit students, like a mock-trial courtroom for criminal and social justice majors; access to the Joliet Slammers and Harrah’s Casino for recreation, sport and tourism management majors; and the St. Francis Business Incubator for business majors.

Students Princess Clemente and Laura Munoz have already benefited from the center’s Business Incubator, crediting it for helping them launch their business, Student Speakers LLC. “We have been using the incubator as a hub to collabo-

rate with other members and exchange ideas,” said Clemente, who is earning a master’s degree in training and development. “We have also been able to attend business workshops here at the center. I also think it is great to know that we are part of the progress and development of downtown Joliet.”

Munoz said the incubator was crucial to launching their business.

“We didn’t have a central location to meet,” said Munoz, a junior at USF majoring in business management. “This makes everything so real right now.”

The new center also connects students with the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce, the Will County Center for Economic Development, the Will County Adult Detention Facility, the Will County Courthouse and the Joliet Police Department.

She suggested that people get their dogs vaccinated for the new strain.

Crest Hill Animal Hospital Manager Matt Pritz said the hospital just received the vac-

cine for the strain. It’s a booster vaccine so clients need to come in about a month after the first vaccine for another shot. After two weeks, the vaccine becomes effective.

“We definitely recommend getting that done,” Pritz said.

Pritz said the hospital has quarantined some dogs that showed symptoms, but there were no confirmed cases as of Monday afternoon.

PLAINFIELD – The dog flu that hit the Chicago area in the past week hasn’t yet come to Will County.

But at least one area park district is advising residents to take precautions when it comes to letting their dogs socialize. And veterinarians in Will County are telling residents to get their dogs vaccinated in case the influenza virus shows up.

The Plainfield Township Park District sent a news release that cautions about potential hazards while allowing canines to use the district’s three dog parks.

“There haven’t been any reported cases in this immediate area as of yet,” said Doug Booth, director of communica-

tions for the park district. “But people do visit the city and take their pets with them. We’re attempting to be proactive.”

Chicago was hit hard with the dog flu, killing five dogs and infecting more than 1,000 in the last three months.

The park district’s release states that veterinarians are warning the strain is highly contagious and includes symptoms of coughing, lethargy, nasal discharge, lack of appetite and trouble breathing.

The park district’s dog parks will remain open. But residents are being asked to avoid open contact with other animals during the next several weeks. And Booth said the park district is tracking the virus as it moves throughout the Chicago area.

Will County Sheriff’s office responds to barricade situation

BY BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com WHEATLAND TOWNSHIP – A SWAT team was called Monday after a man barricaded himself in a Wheatland Township residence for five hours.

Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said Will County Sheriff’s Police were called about 2:15 p.m. to a residence in the 10 South 100 block of Ramm Drive after the man said he was despondent over a recent breakup.

“Deputies tried to make contact but he would not come out and said he was armed,” Ackerson said.

Negotiators also were called to the scene and spoke with the man for about three hours until he broke off communication

“After an hour without any response the [SWAT] commander made the decision to go in with [tear] gas.”

BOLINGBROOK – Illinois American Water began Monday flushing water mains and hydrants in the Bolingbrook service area.

Flushing is scheduled to continue throughout the summer and is done to help ensure continued high-quality water service, according to a news release from the company.

Illinois American Water will place signs in neighborhoods so residents are aware of the system work. While the flushing program is underway,

customers may experience a slight drop in water pressure or temporary water discoloration.

Customers should refrain from doing laundry during the time of day the flushing program is taking place in or near their neighborhood. If tap water is discolored, it is recommended several cold-water faucets are allowed to run for a short time until the water runs clear. Using more than one faucet allows the water to clear faster.

U.S. attorney’s office to monitor Chicago election

CHICAGO – The U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago says it’ll monitor Tuesday’s local election and field any complaints alleging voting fraud. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is seeking a second term. He’s in a runoff election against Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia after falling short of the needed majority to win February’s election.

Monitoring elections and taking calls from those who believe their voting rights have been violated is a long-standing federal practice. The Chicago office will operate a hotline for complaints from candidates or voters at telephone number 312-469-6157.

Prosecutors say that, if necessary, the FBI’s Chicago office and the U.S. Marshals Service would help look into any credible complaints about election fraud.

Coroner: Teen killed by police in Illinois shot in back

ZION – An autopsy has revealed that a teenager killed by a police officer in Illinois over the weekend was shot twice in the back, authorities said Monday.

Justus Howell was shot by Zion police on Saturday afternoon.

Police say officers responding to a call about an altercation began chasing a male when he ran from the scene. They say that after the teen was shot, officers recovered a handgun.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office said in a statement Monday that one bullet struck the 17-year-old in the left back and penetrated his heart, spleen and liver. Another bullet struck him on the right side of his back. Tests to determine whether drugs were in the victim’s system are pending.

Sexual assault charges against Uber driver dropped

CHICAGO – Prosecutors dropped charges Monday against a Chicago driver who was

accused of sexually assaulting an Uber passenger in November after the driver turned over a recording of his conversation with the woman.

Cook County prosecutors told a judge Monday there was new evidence in Maxime Fohounhedo’s case. He was to be released from jail after having spent the past four months behind bars.

Fohounhedo was arrested and charged in December. A 22-yearold female passenger told police she had been attacked the previous month after being picked up from a bar.

Fohounhedo made a nine-minute recording of the alleged victim talking to him while he drove her home, said his wife, Sheenha, and his attorney, Shady Yassin. The woman had made a pass at Fohounhedo when she first stepped into his car, Yassin said.

Inmate gets maximum sentence in threats case

EAST ST. LOUIS – Saying the crimes warrant a “breathtaking sentence,” a federal judge in Illinois has sentenced a prison inmate to the maximum punishment of 15 years behind bars for chronically sending threatening letters while in lockup.

Chief U.S. District Judge Michael Reagan on Friday ordered that William Mabie, 56, serve five years on each of three felony counts of mailing threatening communications. Reagan ordered those terms to be served one after the other, and on top of the man’s federal prison term related to a Missouri threats case.

Mabie, formerly of the St. Louis suburb of Festus, Missouri, also was fined $15,000. Reagan noted the man’s half-dozen prior con-

Field Museum crowdfunding money for new diorama

CHICAGO – Chicago’s Field Museum is turning to a crowdfunding website to raise money to build its first classic animal diorama in more than 20 years.

The Field Museum announced its Indiegogo campaign on Monday as it tries to raise $170,000 in 30 days. The money will be used to create a diorama featuring striped hyenas in the museum’s Hall of Asian Mammals.

Fraternity announces ‘legal action’ against Rolling Stone

“The Rolling Stone article viewed by millions fueled a court of public opinion that ostracized Phi Kappa Psi members and led to vandalism of the fraternity house,” the fraternity’s statement said.

“Clearly, our fraternity and its members have been defamed, but more importantly we fear this entire episode may prompt some victims to remain in the shadows, fearful to confront their attackers,” said Stephen Scipione, president of the University of Virginia’s Phi Kappa Psi chapter. “If Rolling Stone wants to play a real role in addressing this problem, it’s time to get serious.”

Rolling Stone’s “shock narrative” about sex assaults at the University of Virginia was rife with bad journalism, and the magazine has nobody but its own staff to blame, Columbia Journalism School Dean Steve Coll said Monday at a question-and-answer session about the review he led at the magazine’s request.

Charlottesville police launched a separate investigation, which they suspended two weeks ago for lack of evidence even while publicly appealing for Jackie to cooperate. Her lawyer declined to make her available to police or the team at Columbia.

The Columbia review was requested by Rolling Stone Managing Editor Will Dana, who apologized again Monday as he retracted the article. Author Sabrina Rubin Erdely also apologized, saying she would not repeat the same mistakes.

But Sheila Coronel, the journalism school’s dean of academic affairs, said “nothing ever disappears on the Internet.”

Why you should go and vote

By now, you probably are a tad tired of us telling you how important it is to vote in today’s election.

We don’t apologize for the repetition of the message. It is important for Americans to learn about the candidates and cast a ballot.

As a bit of a reprieve, however, we thought we’d step aside and let others tell you why you should get to know the candidates and vote.

“Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote,” drama critic and editor George Jean Nathan said.

“If you have been voting for politicians who promise to give you goodies at someone else’s expense, then you have no right to complain when they take your money and give it to someone else, including themselves,” economist Thomas Sowell said.

“The ballot is stronger than the bullet,” President Abraham Lincoln said.

“The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all,” President John F. Kennedy said.

“Those who stay away from the election think that one vote will do no good: ’Tis but one step more to think one vote will do no harm,” essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson said.

“The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men,” President Lyndon B. Johnson said.

“To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers.

One who does not vote has no right to complain,” author Louis L’Amour said.

“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education,” President Franklin D. Roosevelt said.

In the 1990s, the GOP left its tradition of being a party of moderation and became a party of obstruction, partisanship and full-time fundraising.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was an agitator in Milwaukee’s government when the Koch brothers were looking for somebody they could buy and run for governor. Credit their money, their Prosperity for American PAC, over a half-million from Diane Hendrickson, and the hundreds of employees of their

companies who were paid to volunteer for Walker’s campaigns.

Remember the representative who shouted “liar” at President Obama during the State of the Union Address? He got tens of thousands from that outburst.

Free speech isn’t free. It’s been bought by the American oligarchs.

Whoever is our party’s nominee for president, he will owe allegiance to the billionaires who paid the way for him to win, not the suckers who voted for him.

I’m afraid the man we nominate will be the one with the least amount of principles and ethics and sold his soul for the chance to be president.

Joliet W. gets things going late to beat JCA

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With her team trailing, 1-0, in the fifth inning, Jen Ames knew what she had to do.

The Joliet West second baseman hit a two-out, two-run single to center field that not only proved to be the game-winner against Joliet Catholic but also helped spark a decisive six-run inning.

The Tigers added two more runs in the sixth inning and turned what had been a nailbiter into an 8-1 nonconference victory over the Angels at West.

“We’ve been struggling a little bit at the plate, and we just needed somebody to get a big hit at the right moment to break us out of it,” Tigers coach Heather Suca said. “It’s a mental thing, and it’s a mental game, and that’s what we needed. And we finally broke out of it, and we kept it going, which was also important since everyone got their confidence back.

“And when your offense is hitting, your defense is going to make the plays, which I know that we can and should be doing. But we’ve had a little mental block lately, and we finally snapped out of it in those later innings. We don’t have a weak spot, and we have a lot of good players who are fighting to get in the lineup. It’s great to be able to work with that.”

JCA’s Alyssa Callans kept the Tigers (4-2) at bay through four innings by allowing just two hits while striking out seven. And she looked as if she was on her way to an easy fifth after striking out the first two batters she faced.

But Ariana Liceaga drew a two-out walk, and then Lily Ongkiko beat out a slow-rolling grounder to bring up Ames (3 for 4), who drove in two runs and went to third on the throw.

After pinchhitter Simone Carroll walked and Kristen Ames returned to run for her, Jen Ames scored on a wild pitch and Kristen Ames came home on a single by Kiley Robb.

Alysia Rodriguez (2 for 4) doubled to center to make it 5-1, and DeShonte Smith followed with an RBI double to left to cap the fifth inning.

“We’ve been looking for that one person to bust open an inning, and it happened to be with two outs. So that was awesome,” Jen Ames said. “Basically, all I was thinking as I came to the plate was that we

needed a base hit. We’d had runners on in most innings, and we just had to push them across. So it was like, ‘Somebody has to do it right now.’

“Once one person does it, it gets the team up, and it’s conta-

gious and gives everyone confidence – and we were lacking in confidence. We haven’t been doing our best with our hitting, so defense has been winning us games. And our sophomore pitcher [Kiley Robb] has been doing great. I love how close we are; it’s probably the best part of our team.”

West continued scoring in the sixth as Lorelei Tokarczyk led off with a home run to center into the wind, and Liceaga walked and scored when Robb bounced into a fielder’s choice.

The Angels (3-3) got off to a solid start as Reilly Jo Swanson led off the game with a double to left and then scored on a throwing error that allowed Brenna Garland (2 for 4) to reach, and she eventually got to third. But Tigers starter and complete-game winner Robb (seven hits, two strikeouts) got out of the jam without allowing any more damage.

and Callans (3 for 4) got to second with one out, but they were stranded there.

It was more of the same in the fifth as Swanson and Garland reached on errors to start the inning. Callans singled to center, but Kristen Ames’ throw to catcher Smith got Swanson at the plate, and the Angels again could not add to their lead.

“I told the girls afterward that some times those extra outs that a team get can start adding up,” JCA coach Dave Douglas said. “I thought that we made some plays, and they made some good plays, too. So there were some good things that we can take from today.

“This was the first game back for our catcher, Meghan Harrison, and she made contact every time. And I thought Alyssa did a good job. She was spot on and dominating, but she got up a little bit; and they’re a good team, and if you miss, they’re going to hit you hard.”

In the top of the third, Cody Grosse – who went 4 for 5 – singled to right, stole second and was bunted to third by Alexander Davis, with Davis reaching on an error. Collin McGuire singled to right to score Grosse and move Davis to third. After McGuire stole second, Blake Tomac grounded to short, with Davis being thrown out trying to score. McGuire, however, scored on a passed ball to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

bottom of the third. Budde led off by reaching on an error and then stole second. An out later, he scored on a single to left by Ricky Collins. Coal City loaded the bases, but Talarico induced a groundout to end the threat.

In the top of the fifth, Joliet West touched Littleton for three runs. Grosse led off with a double to center. Davis bunted, and the throw to first went wild, allowing Grosse to score.

McGuire singled and went to second on the throw to the infield. A single to left by Tomac scored Davis and, an out later, Nick Christopher hit a sacri-

fice fly to right to score McGuire and make the score 5-2.

“Brad didn’t have his best stuff, and they hit him a little bit,” McDowell said. “But he got out of a few jams, too.

Overall, I was pretty happy with how we played.”

Coal City tied it in the sixth. Littleton led off with a single and went to second on an error on a ball hit by Nick Micetich. Jared Skubic doubled to center to score Littleton, and Micetich scored on a sacrifice fly to foul ground

left there when the final out was made.

“We seem to find ways to make it close,” said Joliet West coach John Karczewski, a Coal City graduate. “We took their shot late, then scored one to win. That was a nice job in the seventh by Robert to manufacture a run.

Cody Grosse is unreal. He struck out in the first inning, and that was only the third time he has struck out in the last two years. Then he bangs out four hits.

“We still have a ton of things to work on, but it was nice to get a win. Coal City played well. Their pitcher [Littleton] did a good job, but we did have some mental mistakes that just can’t happen. I can handle physical mistakes, but we have to shore things up mentally.”

COAL CITY – For a brief moment Monday morning, the Coal City baseball team had the momentum in a nonconference baseball game against Joliet West.

The Coalers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the Tigers at 5. However, that momentum was short-lived.

Joliet West’s Robert Talarico led off the top of the seventh with a bunt single, then stole second. An out later, he stole third and, when the throw went into left field, he came home to score the go-ahead run. Relief pitcher Mike Wolz retired the Coalers (9-2) in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 6-5 win for Joliet West (4-3).

“We gave a real good Class 4A program a good game,” Coal City coach Jerry McDowell said. “Even with that, though, we made some mental mistakes that cost us. We missed a cutoff man, we didn’t field bunts well. Those small things are the things that add up and come back to bite you against a good team like this.”

Coal City got on the board first, touching Lewis University-bound Talarico for a run in the bottom of the first. D.J. Budde, who had two hits in the game, led off with a single and went to third when a pickoff throw got away. He scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

Morris’ come-from-behind rally trips up Reed-Custer

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Things went Reed-Custer’s way for most of the game Monday evening.

Comet pitcher Kenna Wilkey hit a grand slam in the second inning to forge a 4-0 lead. A ball hit by Morris’ Leah Lines that looked destined to be an RBI single instead hit runner Ashley Phelps coming off second and Phelps was out. The breaks were going the Comets’ way.

That all changed in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing, 7-2, Morris was the beneficiary of a couple breaks, took advantage and scored nine runs to claim an 11-7 come-from-behind win.

“I told them in the huddle before we came to bat in the sixth that the luck was due to go our way,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said. “We were waiting for a break, and we got it.”

The break in question was a blooper to left by Melissa Benson with the bases loaded and two outs that fell in and allowed all three runners to score for a 8-7 lead. But the

Redskins put themselves in that position by hitting Wilkey hard.

Emily Moore got Morris on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo homer to lead off the inning. Jasmine Cook and Janelle Brehm each walked before freshman Phelps delivered an RBI single to score Cook and make the score 5-2. Moore later added an RBI double in the sixth.

“We caught a break,” Moore said. “I was really nervous going up before my home run, but I just let my nerves out. I knew we were going to come back. I never lost hope in my teammates.

“I had played against her [Wilkey] in the summer. She throws hard, but I knew what to expect against her.”

Reed-Custer scored single runs in the top of the fourth and the top of the sixth to take a 7-2 lead. And, with Wilkey throwing hard and the sun going down, it appeared a win was in store for the Comets.

That’s when Morris (7-3) got things going.

Sophomore Ryan Friend led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, and senior

Amanda Jenkins followed suit. An out later, Cook hit a liner off the second baseman’s glove that scored Friend. After a wild pitch sent runners to second and third, sophomore Brehm singled up the middle to score both Jenkins and Cook to make it 7-5.

Phelps and Lines both walked, loading the bases. An out later, Benson hit a blooper to left that fell in when the shortstop and left fielder had to avoid a collision, clearing the bases to make it 8-7 in Morris’ favor.

Friend then doubled to left to score Benson and make it 9-7.

Jenkins walked, and Moore doubled to score Friend. A wild pitch then scored Jenkins to cap the scoring.

“We had some young girls come through,” Lowery said.

“Ryan Friend, Ashley Phelps, Melissa Benson. Emily and Janelle have been our power hitters all year, but to get some big hits from the young girls today was real nice.

“I give our girls a lot of credit. It would have been easy to pack it in when we were down, 7-2, against a good pitcher like Wilkey, but they never stopped.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A season brimming with high expectations opened with a dud for Jeff Samardzija and the White Sox. Yordano Ventura pitched six solid innings before exiting with a thumb cramp, former Sox outfielder Alex Rios had a three-run homer among his three hits, and the AL champion Kansas City Royals routed the Sox, 10-1, on Monday.

“I’m not going to say that it’s the whole season, but you want to get off to a good start. We didn’t,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “You just have to come back out on Wednesday and get back after it.”

“He throws hard,” said LaRoche, who went 0 for 4 and struck out twice. “He’s one of those guys who looks like he’s going to throw it 80 mph. It’s easy gas. It’s got a little rise on it. He’s got a good changeup and curveball. If his command is right, he’s going to be tough to get to.”

Yordano Ventura said he felt his thumb “lock up.”

“My first thought, it was something really bad, but I’m really happy that it’s not,” he said, with teammate Jeremy Guthrie translating.

Duke holds off Wisconsin to win another national title The ASSOCIATED PRESS INDIANAPOLIS – The package deal has delivered Duke another national championship.

Tyus Jones scored 23 points, his good buddy and freshman teammate Jahlil Okafor added a couple key baskets in the closing minutes, and the Blue Devils beat Wisconsin, 68-63, on Monday night to give coach Mike Krzyzewski his fifth national championship.

Okafor spent big chunks of the second half on the bench after drawing his third, then his fourth foul.

When he returned, he beat Wisconsin’s big man, senior Frank Kaminsky, for a pair of buckets, then Jones hit a 3-pointer to complete a run from nine down to eight up with 1:22 left.

Krzyzewski’s fifth title puts him in second place alone behind John Wooden.

Kaminsky outscored Okafor 21-10 but came up short in his last game, as the Badgers (36-4) couldn’t duplicate their thrilling win over Kentucky two nights earlier.

Jones led the Blue Devils (354) with 23 points.

The Blue Devils took the lead for the first time since it was 29-28 on a 3-pointer by Grayson Allen, who came off the bench to score 16 points.

After the Badgers regained the lead on back-to-back baskets by Kaminsky and Sam Dekker, the Blue Devils stormed away.

Jones started it with a basket, and Okafor – mired in foul trouble all game – returned to the floor to score the next two hoops.

By the time Jones knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:10 to go, the Blue Devils had pushed their lead to 66-58 and the celebration was starting in the

stands.

Wisconsin tried to foul its way back into the game in the final minute, but Jones added two more free throws with 34.9 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Jones and Okafor have known each other since playing for USA Basketball, and decided together to attend Duke.

Their goal was to win a national championship – and now they have it.

Kaminsky, the AP player of the year, finished with not only 21 points but also 12 rebounds for the Badgers, seeking their first title since 1941. Dekker added 12 points and eight boards.

Just when it seemed Duke was about to put away Wisconsin and win the national championship, the Badgers roared back with a 3 by Kaminsky and a dunk by Nigel Hayes to cut Duke’s lead to 66-63 with 42 seconds left.

Friends raise money for upbeat Wilmington man still fighting stage 4 colorectal cancer If you go

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent WILMINGTON – Brian Smith’s incredible medical journey began two years ago with what he thought was just a little constipation.

Smith’s ordeal with colorectal cancer has since included three surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy treatments, emergency room and intensive care stays, broken ribs and a shattered pelvis, and a complex, two-day surgery that doctors believe was the first of its kind performed in Illinois.

Today, the friends and family of this 33-year-old man are asking for financial help for Smith and his wife, who are watching the medical bills stack up like an unscalable monetary mountain.

“It’s been a really tough road,” Smith said. “There aren’t a lot of options left.”

Their friend, Luke Aulwurm, encourages the public to donate to the couple’s Aurelio’s fundraiser or to their gofundme website.

“Brian is an amazing person,” Aulwurm said. “The man is so selfless. He has always loved to help people. He takes on tasks for people, and he is just an amazing person.

Something wrong

Born and raised in New Lenox, Smith and his wife of six years, Jacki, live in Wilmington. They enjoyed their honeymoon years hanging out with friends at backyard barbecues and traveling to as many different water parks as they could. They even celebrated their anniversaries at water parks.

Then, in 2012, when Smith was 31, he thought he was suffering from chronic constipation, and so did his doctor, according to Jacki, who told

“It showed he had a big, giant tumor, about 8 centimeters in,” Jacki said. “He had stage 4 colorectal cancer, and it was already in his liver and in his bones.”

She was “completely dumbfounded” by the news. She never suspected cancer. Brian did, Jacki said, but kept it quiet because he didn’t want her to worry. Despite the diagnosis, they both felt hope.

“We were very optimistic because we had lots of options,” Smith said.

Treatment begins

Smith had rectal surgery to remove the tumor, a colostomy surgery, about 25 chemo treatments, radiation therapy and liver surgeries to remove what cancer they could.

He did fairly well at first, even continuing his job as

a chemical lawn engineer while carrying his chemo bag, through which he received 24-hour chemotherapy.

“I probably would have been, ‘Oh, poor me,’ ” Jacki said. “He even built us a deck with that chemo pack on.”

Smith had significant setbacks, however, from what Jacki said were complications from his rectal surgery. He lost 40 pounds in two months and most of his muscle mass.

Another liver surgery was planned, but once surgeons got inside, Jacki said, it was determined the cancer was too extensive. That’s when the state-of-the art liver procedure became an option.

Conventional techniques not possible

Dr. John Renz, director of the University of Chicago’s liver transplant program, took Brian’s case.

“Brian had a very big

cancer in his liver,” Renz said, “which was impossible to take out by conventional techniques.”

Renz and his transplant team began planning the auto-transplant surgery. He had performed one in New York, but to his knowledge, it was to be a first for Illinois, he said.

He said it’s only been done perhaps 60 or 70 times in the United States.

During the procedure, Renz removed Brian’s entire liver from his body, using a procedure similar to one used when someone donates a liver, cold-preserved it, cut the tumor away, then transplanted the liver back into Brian’s body, hopefully cancer-free.

“That was his only option to try to cure him,” Renz said.

It was a risky and involved surgery, but the Smiths were willing. Jacki said the surgery took about 21 hours the first

day, going into the early hours the next morning. The team went back in later that morning and spent another six or seven hours finishing.

“The surgery went well,” Renz said. “His liver regenerated well. Even today, his liver is working fine.”

Unfortunately, cancer remained in Brian’s body. It multiplied and shattered his now-fragile pelvis. Jacki said doctors suspect it also may be in his kidneys and lungs. The couple said they are considering and discussing one last surgical option with their physicians.

Jacki said her husband can still drive and get around, but he is in much pain. He always has been tough, she said, and is handling the pain.

HEALTH BRIEFS Plainfield Central NHS to host 5K fundraiser for global health care

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield High School – Central Campus National Honor Society will host a special 5K run at 8 a.m. Saturday at the PHSCC cross country course to benefit the international Doctors Without Borders organization.

Admission is $8 in advance or $10 the morning of the race. PHSCC is at 24120 W. Fort Beggs Drive, Plainfield.

PHSCC senior and NHS social campaigns officer Melissa Feliciano came up with the idea for the 5K when she was looking for a new NHS project.

Shorewood veteran at Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic

SHOREWOOD – Aubrey Youngs, an Army veteran from Shorewood, participated in the 29th National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic from March 29 to April 3 in Snowmass (near Aspen), Colorado.

Co-sponsored by Disabled American Veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs, the clinic is a world leader in adaptive winter sports instruction for veterans with severe injuries and illnesses.

For nearly three decades, the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic has empowered profoundly disabled veterans in adaptive sports including skiing, snowboarding, sled hockey, scuba diving, kayaking, rock climbing and other activities.

Injured during Operation Enduring Freedom, Youngs sustained a spinal cord injury and was among more than 350 veterans and active duty military personnel from across the country participating in the clinic. It is the largest event of its kind.

By MALCOLM RITTER The Associated Press NEW YORK – A brain-scanning technique might help one day to identify people with a disease linked to concussions in football and other sports, an illness now diagnosed only after death, a small study suggests.

Scans of 14 retired football players at risk for the condition, called CTE, revealed deposits of abnormal protein in a pattern resembling that found at autopsy in the dis-

ease.

CTE stands for chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

It causes progressive brain degeneration in athletes and others who’ve had repeated concussions and other blows to the head. Symptoms include memory loss, confusion, aggression, depression and progressive dementia.

No cure is known. But the brain-scanning approach raises the possibility of detecting the disease early on, when the chances would be greatest for success of experimental treat-

ments, study authors said.

It also might shed light on the disease and help athletes with decisions on retirement, said a study author, Dr. Julian Bailes, co-director of the NorthShore Neurological Institute in Evanston, Illinois.

He and others present the results in a paper released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Joseph Maroon of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who was not involved in the study, called

the results “a major step forward in detecting CTE prior to death.”

Like the authors, he said the results set the stage for bigger studies to investigate the technique’s usefulness.

The study of 14 retired professional football players included one with dementia, one without obvious symptoms and 12 with a mental functioning deficit called mild cognitive impairment. All had a history of repeated concussions and other blows to the head.

For the study, they were injected with a substance that binds to deposits of an abnormal protein found in CTE and makes them visible on a PET scan. The resulting PET images differed from results with 28 healthy people and 24 people with Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that can resemble CTE in its symptoms.

Maroon said the technique could offer a more definitive answer if scientists can find a binding substance that hones in more specifically on the abnormal protein.

Common sense and card sense will do a lot to make the pilgrimage of a bridge deal not too difficult.

What would a declarer with those characteristics do on this deal? He is in four hearts, and West leads the spade jack, which is covered by dummy’s queen and East’s king.

South’s three-heart rebid shows at least a six-card suit and game-invitational values; typically, he will have 15-17 high-card points. Yes, this hand is a maximum, but if partner has an unhelpful holding, game will probably fail. North, of course, is happy to raise to four hearts.

When you are in a suit contract and have more trumps than the dummy, count the losers in your hand. Here, South has four: one spade, two diamonds and one club.

Then declarer should count winners. Interestingly, he has 10: one spade, six hearts, one diamond and two clubs. So he can make his contract as long as the defenders do not get their four tricks first.

There is only one way for South to eliminate a loser: discard it on the third round of diamonds. Also, because dummy is so short of entries, there isn’t a moment to lose.

Declarer must win the first trick (or East might shift to a trump) and lead a diamond. A defender may win, cash a spade trick, and play a trump, but South wins with dummy’s 10 and leads another diamond. Then, when back in the dummy with the heart ace, he pitches his club two on the diamond queen. ******

have the most frequently dividing stem cells might have the greatest risk of cancer.

That’s what the researchers found. And they estimated about two-thirds of all cancers might result from such bad luck.

In my opinion, the authors’ conclusion that bad luck accounts for most cancers is questionable on two grounds. First, we know the rates of some cancers (like skin cancer, or nose and throat cancer) are a hundred times more common in some parts of the world than others. That implies a huge effect of the environment.

Second, using the phrase “bad luck” implies there is nothing to be done about random cancer-causing genetic changes.

That may be true currently, but it is entirely possible that a deeper understanding of the biology of cancer will reveal ways to reduce the risk of such random changes.

I think it’s unwise to say most cancer is caused by bad luck – particularly when the argument is quite speculative.

That’s because it could discourage us from pursuing a healthy lifestyle, and from getting cancer screening tests that can catch cancers at a curable stage. (I’ve put a table of recommended cancer screening tests on my website, askdoctork.com.)

We can control our fate, though not completely.

That’s true of minimizing our risk of cancer, as well. Cancer is not just a matter of bad luck.

cancer was the result of risky behaviors like smoking and spending too much time in the sun. But then I read an article about cancer and bad luck. So which is it – behaviors or luck?

Dear Reader: I know the article you are referring to, and I wasn’t very happy with the way it was presented by the media. Let me start with the bottom line: Cancer is caused by (1) our genes, and by (2) our lifestyle (risky behaviors) and environment. It’s not just one or the other.

Sometimes genes we inherit from our parents cause cancer. An example is the BRCA1 gene that causes some cases of breast cancer.

However, many cancer-causing genetic changes occur after we are born. Sometimes, risky behaviors produce changes in our genes. An example is how cigarette smoke affects certain genes in the lungs and other organs to cause cancer.

Factors in the environment that may or may not be influenced by our behavior can cause cancer.

Examples are cancers of the uterus (cervix), liver and stomach caused by various viruses and bacteria. Or skin cancers as the result of unprotected exposure to sunlight.

The study you refer to involved a complex analysis of cancers and stem cells in multiple different organs.

Each of our organs has its own stem cells. Organ stem cells are there to replace older cells in the organ when those older cells die. Stem cells divide frequently.

The study was asking whether some cancers occur simply because an organ’s stem cells divide frequently. That could cause cancer because each time a cell divides, there is a risk of developing genetic changes (“bad luck”). If so, organs that

Dear Abby: When I turned 25, after considering it for years, I went to my doctor and told him I wanted to become sterile. I got a vasectomy two months later. I haven’t had any regrets, and now at 27, I’m still firmly convinced that I don’t want children – ever.

I started dating a woman a year ago, “Anita,” who told me that if she never had kids, she could live with it.

I felt lucky to have found someone who would be OK with no kids.

I have had a few issues with Anita. When she gets upset from time to time, she says that if she stays with me, she will never have kids. I know she cares for me deeply, but I also believe she feels conflicted about giving up the chance to be a mother.

Do you think it’s fair for me to pursue this relationship and hope that eventually she’ll come to terms with not having children with me? Or should I end the relationship so she can find someone who shares her desire to become a parent?

I worry that if I end it, it may take years before I find someone who shares my wish to never be a parent. –
