Morris Oatmeal Company – Morris In early Chicago, one of the most important food processing activities was the milling of grain.

As early as the 1830s, Chicago had contained steam-powered flour mills located near the Chicago River. After the Civil War, other kinds of milling operations settled close to Chicago, including Morris.

In 1844, Conrad Elderding was born in LaSalle County.

He learned the milling trade from his father at an early age, and by 1869, owned a mill in Morris. By the end of the 19th century, Elderding engaged exclusively in the manufacture of rolled oats.

In 1902, Conrad Elerding and W. G. Norton formed the Morris Oatmeal Company.

Ground was broken in 1912 for the four-story building shown in this divided back era postcard. The plant, shown in the then photograph, consisted of a mill and packing building, warehouses boiler and kiln drying rooms, a steel-covered elevator, and offices. Tracks from the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroads ran into the property of the company.

At the time of its inception, the mill produced nearly 300 barrels of rolled oats, including rolled oats, pearl barley and mill feed. The products of his mill reached many markets in the United States and Europe.

During its tenure in Morris, the plant always was known to pay the highest market price to farmers for oats, barley, corn and wheat. The city of Morris even received free advertising from the packages of oatmeal and barley, which bore the city’s name.

Nearly 650 candidates running for office – will voters turn out? to vote, calling municipal races “one of the most important elections” since they involve local candidates who spend local tax dollars.

“They get a personal invitation right to their mailbox,” Schultz Voots said, referring to the mailers her office sends to every registered voter. “It has all of the hours, and voting options. You can’t go out and force them to vote, but we do everything in our power to give them the information” needed so they can.

Mefful, 22, of University Park registered and voted in his first election since becoming a U.S. citizen Jan. 11, 2014.

Mefful and his family immigrated from Nigeria in 2009 and he is studying computer science at Chicago State University.

“This is very exciting,” Mefful said.

Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots had her office opened Saturday for two purposes: to allow those who wanted to vote before Election Day that opportunity, and for 303 election judges to pick up their supplies – such as binders, polling place yard signs and a luggage cart – for use Tuesday.

“Our judges do a marvelous job. They work a long day and we are thankful for all of them,” Schultz Voots said, adding she appreciated the help Saturday

Voting officials are organizing, and armies of campaign supporters took to the streets, in the days leading up to Election Day. But as Tuesday nears, those seeking public office face the age-old question: Will voters turn out in force and push them into an electoral victory, or will a lack of interest keep people home?

There are 211 contests in Will County this year, with a

little less than 650 candidates seeking office. Not all of the 211 races are contested.

In 2013, the last municipal election, turnout was 18.13 percent countywide, according to the clerk’s office.

“I’m always shooting for 100 percent, because we have to spend just as much if it’s the 18 percent or 100 percent,” Schultz Voots said. “This tends to be lower turnout.”

She encourages residents

Voter turnout could affect the hotly contested Joliet mayoral race.

“I hope so,” Councilman Bob O’Dekirk said when asked if the campaign sparked interest from voters who do not usually take part in municipal elections. “I’ve gone beyond the normal sphere of people who usually vote in city elections. ...

We need to get people who don’t normally vote in city elections to be involved.”

O’Dekirk said he would have an army of volunteers going door-to-door over the weekend to encourage turnout.

New clergy group plans to stay active after election

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The African-American Clergy Coalition created for the Joliet mayoral race will remain active after the election, the Rev. David Latimore said.

Latimore is among 14 African-American pastors who signed their names to an endorsement for Councilman Bob O’Dekirk in the Joliet mayoral election.

The African American Clergy Coalition was formed around the election, said Latimore, pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church. But, he said, the coalition will remain active in city affairs regardless of who is elected.

The strongly worded endorsement letter released Friday speaks of “visionless leadership” in the city and “historically neglected residents of the East Side.”

The group’s creation has

come with some controversy.

Two prominent African American pastors, Herbert Brooks and Warren Dorris, questioned the endorsement letter when it was first circulated last week, saying they and other African-American pastors had not participated in the endorsement process.

“I’m an African American pastor. I’m an African American clergy,” Brooks said. “I didn’t know about the meetings. I didn’t know about the

letter.”

Both Brooks and Dorris had announced in January that they were supporting Mayor Tom Giarrante in the election.

Latimore said about 25 pastors were invited to participate in the African American Clergy Coalition endorsement process. He said 15 responded. But an invitation was not sent to Brooks or Dorris because they already had made endorsements.

“We were asking those clergy who had not made a public declaration for any candidate to come in and listen with open ears,” he said.

Pastors who signed the endorsement were Craig Purchase, Clint Wilburn, Richard House, Angelo Hill, Tracie Jennings, Edward Martin, Jerry McElroy, Eddie L. Pierce, Glenda McCullum, Nona McKenzie Parker, Lonnie Posley, Jimmie E. Sellers and Gary R. Williams.

Joliet council to vote on temporary signs and more

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Banners, feather flags and other temporary signs would be restricted under a proposal that goes to the Joliet City Council for a vote Monday.

The temporary sign ordinance is one of several matters in the spotlight in recent weeks that are on the meeting’s agenda.

Others include: new rules for public comments at council meetings; a council handbook outlining duties and powers; and money for a future traffic light on Illinois Route 53.

Temporary signs could only be posted for 30 days under the proposed ordinance.

ated by Councilwoman Jan Quillman. It is aimed at the proliferation of temporary signs that never come down, especially along the city’s major commercial thoroughfares.

“It’s just not attractive and conducive to our area,” Quillman said. “We want the gateways to our city to be attractive.”

The ordinance would allow businesses to display up to three temporary signs for 30 days. Businesses would have to get permits to display the signs. Only two permits would be available annually.

There would be a fee of $50 per sign.

Exemptions include civic flags, political signs, signs for nonprofits and directional signs.

“It’s just not attractive and conducive to our area. We want the gateways to our city to be attractive.”

Jan Quillman Joliet City Council member Quillman said there has been a positive response to the proposal.

“People say it’s about time that we have something that controls these signs and these flags,” she said. “And at times, they obstruct the view [of motorists] as well.”

Public comments

Residents at council meet-

ings would get an extra minute for a total of four to make comments, although more time can be granted by the council.

The proposed rules require that speakers notify the city clerk before the start of the meeting if they want to discuss an item on the agenda.

Those who want to talk about items not on the agenda would no longer be required to sign up before the meeting.

But residents are asked to notify the city clerk by noon of the Thursday preceding the Monday pre-council meetings so issues can be addressed.

Council handbook

The proposed ordinance outlines rules for the City Council and organizes them into one handbook.

The ordinance is designed to address criticism that the council rules were too often based on precedent and not codified for everyone to see.

The ordinance includes sections on the powers of council members, boards and commissions, a code of ethics and more.

Illinois 53 and Emerald Drive

A “major e-commerce company” could move into a vacant warehouse at 401 E. Laraway Road, which would be redeveloped, according to a staff memo to the council.

The owner of the warehouse has offered to make a $150,000 contribution to be used for a future traffic signal and intersection improvements at Illinois 53 and Emerald Drive, the memo states.

Heroin summit will expose reality, dangers in Will County

By HANNAH KOHUT hkohut@shawmedia.com In response to a growing heroin epidemic in Will County, the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization, HERO, is teaming up with Will County HELPS and the Southwest Coalition for Substance Abuse Issues to present a community forum Friday.

The forum will be at Edward Hospital in Romeoville and is called HERO HELPS. HERO was founded by two Will County fathers, John Roberts and Brian Kirk, who lost their sons to heroin overdoses.

Paul Lauridsen, HERO board member and clinical director of Stepping Stones Treatment Center in Joliet, said the forum will spotlight the dangers of heroin use and the effect it has on addicts and their families.

“Heroin is a big problem here,” Lauridsen said. “In 2012,

I become concerned and have spent days and weeks and months with individuals. Quite a few of them are from the suburbs.”

In addition to Jines’ photos, there will be photos of people who have died from drug overdoses, with narratives written by their loved ones.

“Seeing the faces of addicts is powerful, absolutely,” Lauridsen said. “And having an opportunity to talk with someone who has lost [a loved one] to this is very moving.”

The forum also is about solutions. State Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, will discuss the Heroin Crisis Act, House Resolution 0883. According to the Illinois General Assembly’s synopsis, the bill “declares a heroin state of emergency in Illinois and directs the House Task Force on Heroin Crisis to develop legislation to combat the problem.”

State Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, also will update the status of House Bill 0946, which would create the Young Adults Heroin Use Task Force.

It would address the growing problem of heroin use in Illinois high schools.

“This is about what we can do in prevention, with education for young people and helping them understand the dangers,” Lauridsen said. “This also goes way beyond, to providing greater access to treatment for people who do have a substance abuse problem.”

Instead, that person turned to crime to feed his daily habit.

“He ended up with a felony conviction,” Lauridsen said.

“Once that happens, there are complications with trying to get your life back on track.”

Lauridsen hopes similar stories will affect everyone in attendance.

Giarrante said he expects turnout to be typical of past elections and not likely to rise above 20 percent. His campaign is focusing on voters who have turned out in previous years.

“We are going after predominately the people who vote in the municipal elections,” he said.

Mihelich expects turnout to be lower than the 2011 mayoral race, when nine candidates tried to bring out voters. He believes there has been less media coverage of this mayoral election than in 2011.

Election night plans

On election night, after the polls close, one Democrat and one Republican will get in the

same vehicle and deliver the ballots to the clerk’s office, either at the Joliet office or dropoff stations throughout the county in Bolingbrook, Monee and Plainfield.

Once ballots are counted, Schultz Voots said her office would add in absentee ballots and those who took advantage of early voting options.

All polling places open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Residents can refer to their voter’s registration cards to ensure they are going to the right polling place, visit www. thewillcountyclerk.com and click on “Election Services” or call the clerk’s office at 815-7404632.

Schultz Voots reminded anyone who intends to vote that they can’t go into a polling place with anything, such as a button or a shirt, that favors a particular candidate. There also can’t be any campaign literature 100 feet from the room door of the polling place.

NAPERVILLE – Nicor Gas is reminding homeowners and contractors to call 8-1-1 before beginning any digging for spring projects “We want anyone planning an outdoor project to remember that you do not always know what is underground,” Beth Reese, president of Nicor Gas, said in a news release. “Calling 8-1-1 first will help avoid the possibility of putting you and your family in

harm’s way.”

When making the free call to 8-1-1, homeowners and contractors are connected to JULIE (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators), which notifies the appropriate utility companies (natural gas, electric, water, sewer, communication) of the intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags or spray paint, according to the news release.

Once lines have been accurately marked, digging can begin around marked lines. JULIE neither owns nor marks any underground utilities.

Calls to the free locating service can be made up to 14 days in advance. The requests to have utility operators mark underground facilities, including natural gas, water, cable, telephone and electric lines, can be made 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

I got a rain barrel for Christmas a couple years ago, and I finally got it set up last summer. It’s great for watering plants around my patio and in pots.

According to the Conservation Foundation, estimates show that a quarter inch of rain falling on the average home yields more than 200 gallons of water.

There is a limited amount of fresh water on our Earth.

If everyone took additional steps to protect it, it could make a huge difference.

According to the Conservation Foundation: “When we think of our storm water as a precious fresh water resource, it doesn’t make sense to manage it like a waste product.”

Good rain barrels are nearly enclosed, with a screen on the top to keep out mosquitoes, eliminating their access to standing water, which they use for breeding.

Another way to redirect rainwater is to build a rain garden, as the third-grade students at Aux Sable Elementary School in Minooka did last year.

Thanks to a $5,000 grant from LyondellBasell and help from the Conservation Foundation, the school turned a sloping, soggy spot that gets water runoff from the asphalt playground on one side and a cornfield on the other into a garden.

The garden was filled with indigenous prairie plants.

Their deep roots act like big sponges, soaking up rainwater and slowly releasing it back into the soil to prevent runoff.

Although it’s just barely April, the month of May already has been proclaimed as rain barrel month in many towns, including the village of Minooka.

It’s good to start thinking about using a rain barrel now as we head into the rainy season.

It may be one more thing to add to your list, but using a rain barrel can reduce your water bills during the summer. About 40 percent of household water used during the warmer months goes toward watering our lawns and gardens.

By collecting the rainwater, you are re-directing a natural resource, which can reduce flooding, reduce stress on sewer system infrastructures and keep pollutants out of streams and rivers.

When clean rain water washes over fertilized lawns, the chemicals wash into the sewer systems and make their way to our watersheds.

“He just went out and watched me,” Nicole said.

Eventually Feiner, a truck driver who had worked for several cartage companies over the years, took apart that lifestyle and built up his own trucking company. Dan said he worked hard to make it successful.

“He was very motivated,” Dan said. “He didn’t like anyone telling him what to do and felt he could accomplish more without having a boss looking over his shoulder.”

That routine began coming apart in December 2013. Diann noticed some unsteadiness in Feiner at a family gathering and quipped that he had drunk too much, despite Feiner insisting otherwise.

In January 2014, Feiner was in a car accident and thought he had injured his back. Persistent symptoms eventually led to the diagnosis of ALS, and the disease moved fast.

“Within months, he was in a wheelchair,” Dan said.

In July 2014, Feiner sold B&K Transport and concentrated on enjoying his family.

Looking back on March 20 – the day before Feiner died – Jenn sees a bit of the divine.

“It was a 70-degree day and he had taken my kids to a park in Joliet,” Jenn said. “I believe that God made that 70-degree day.”

CHANNAHON – Brian Feiner of Channahon was hands-on and independent; he did things his way.

So spending the last year of his life – Feiner was 48 when he died March 17 – battling the side-effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease – seemed especially cruel.

Feiner could no longer rebuild cars or play country and classic rock songs on his guitar. He could Brian Feiner no longer run his trucking company, B&K Transport. So Feiner spent those last few months rebuilding family relationships.

“He had five grandkids and I think the grandkids were one of the major reasons he pushed through and had a real positive outlook. He was much more family-oriented,” said Feiner’s daughter, Jenn Peterson of Morris. “He just loved those grandkids.”

Diann Moustis of Marseilles, Feiner’s mother, said Feiner – even as a boy – loved taking things apart and putting them back together.

Through experimentation, Feiner taught himself plumbing, carpentry, troubleshooting lawnmowers. By 18, Feiner was pulling apart cars and

rebuilding them.

“He didn’t let much stand in his way,” Diann said. “If he wanted to do something, then by golly, he was going to do it.”

Feiner’s son Dan Feiner of Joliet recalled his father’s 1972 Dodge Charger, which Feiner stripped to nothing and then sanded, rewired, reupholstered and repainted.

Although Feiner occasionally showed the Charger, Dan said, Feiner tinkered with it for the sheer pleasure of working the project, not accolades.

“He just learned from experience,” Dan said. “If he broke it, then he’d figure out how to fix it.”

Feiner approached music the same way. A former piano student, Feiner taught himself how to play guitar when he was a teen and then later taught his son, also named Brian, of Joliet how to play.

Feiner often woke the household at 7 a.m., cranking up a song he wanted to learn, Dan said. But Feiner also participated in his children’s interests.

“He even rode dirt bikes with us,” Brian said.

Feiner’s daughter Nicole Feiner of Coal City smiled when she recalled the times Feiner took her horseback riding, even though he never actually sat on a horse.

He acknowledged Nicole’s love by buying a horse for her, requiring Dan to forego a concert to build a fence for it and then accompanying Nicole whenever she rode.

Gun-control activist and widow of James Brady dies at 73 Sarah Kemp Brady, who became an activist for gun control after her husband was shot in the head in the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, died Friday.

Brady, 73, died in a retirement community in Alexandria, Virginia, after battling

Hinckley Jr. left James Brady partially paralyzed.

Four years later, Sarah Brady became involved in gun control. She chaired Handgun Control Inc., which was renamed the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence as a tribute to the Bradys. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act was signed into law in 1993 by President Bill Clinton.

“Sarah courageously stepped up after Jim was shot to prevent others from enduring what our family has gone through, and her work has saved countless lives,” the family’s statement said. “Sarah was a voice of strength, love and encouragement, and she inspired others, showing that one person could make a difference and change the world – which she did.”

Dan Gross, president of Brady Campaign, called Sarah Brady “its guiding light.”

“There are countless people walking around today who would not be were it not for Sarah Brady’s remarkable resilience, compassion,” Gross said.

John is loved and remembered by his creative design and inspiring ideas that touched every person he met, along with his giving heart and thoughtfulness to help others.

Local right-to-work idea being tested in Kentucky

CHAMPAIGN – Since he took office, Gov. Bruce Rauner has said repeatedly he wants to let Illinois voters decide whether to set up their own local right-towork zones, areas where union membership and dues would be voluntary.

The Republican also has circulated a memo through the Illinois Municipal League encouraging towns to give the idea consideration, which at least two communities outside of Chicago – Oswego and East Dundee – have discussed in the last week.

Rauner has pitched the rightto-work zones as part of a plan to build up the state’s economy, an angle union leaders say is misleading. Attorney General Lisa Madigan has said the zones would violate federal labor laws, as right-to-work can only be enacted on a statewide basis like in Wisconsin and Indiana, as well as state laws.

Some counties in Kentucky have created the zones and now find themselves in a legal battle similar to what Madigan warns of, being driven in part by out-ofstate anti-union interests who say they’re keeping an eye on Illinois, too. A closer look at Kentucky’s newly found position on the front lines of right-to-work laws shows what might happen if Illinois, which has one of the country’s most heavily unionized workforces, follows suit.

In south-central Kentucky, Warren County was the first to make the move after several years of failed state-level bids to enact right-to-work laws, county Judge Executive Mike Buchanon said. At least nine have followed.

Chicago candidates spend last weekend campaigning

CHICAGO – The candidates for Chicago mayor spent a busy weekend campaigning across the city in the days ahead of the runoff election on Tuesday.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s campaign said Emanuel was expected to give remarks at a South Side church on Sunday afternoon and before the Cubs home opener. The day before, his campaign organized a rally on Chicago’s North Side.

Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia was expected on Sunday to attend two churches, a restaurant, a rally and the Cubs game.

Rauner grants 2 pardons, rejects 57 clemency requests

CHICAGO – Bruce Rauner has issued his first two pardons since becoming Illinois governor, though his office offered no clarity about his criteria for deciding clemency requests or suggested how quickly he intends to chip away at a backlog of applications.

The Republican rejected 57 of 59 clemency requests, with the two pardons he did grant going to Neil Hebert and Michael Sullivan, the Champaign News-Gazette reported over the weekend.

Hebert, 43, was convicted of theft in Champaign County when he was 20 and served two years’ probation. His pardon, announced Friday, lets him seek to have his criminal record expunged. Sullivan was convicted of burglary in Cook County in 1979.

According to his office, Rauner inherited nearly 3,000 clemency petitions from the two previous Democratic administrations.

Asked Sunday about how the governor planned to chip away at the backlog of petitions, Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly responded by email that, “We will be reviewing clemencies on a regular basis, but there will not be a timetable on the process.”

Man accused of driving stolen car struck on I-94

CHICAGO – Authorities in Chicago said a person suspected of driving a stolen car ran from officers onto a freeway where he was hit by a car.

Chicago police say officers saw a stolen vehicle about 1 a.m.

Sunday on the city’s far South Side. The driver led police on a chase where he crashed the vehicle.

The Chicago Sun-Times report-

ed Illinois State Police said the man then ran on to the northbound lanes of Interstate 94 and was struck by a car.

He was taken to a hospital in Oak Lawn in serious condition.

Charges were pending Sunday.

2 men hospitalized after early morning Evanston shooting

EVANSTON – Evanston police are investigating an early morning shooting that left two men hospitalized.

The victims are a 22-year-old man from Round Lake Beach and a 23-year-old Waukegan man. Police say they left a night club in Chicago and were driving through Evanston about 3:50 a.m. Friday when another vehicle pulled alongside and a gunman fired several shots into the car.

Police did not release the victims’ names or a suspected motive for the shooting.

Thousands brave rain to hear pope’s Easter plea for peace

By FRANCES D’EMILIO The Associated Press VATICAN CITY – In an Easter peace wish Sunday, Pope Francis praised the framework nuclear agreement with Iran as an opportunity to make the world safer, while expressing deep worry about bloodshed in Libya, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa.

Cautious hope ran through Francis’ “Urbi et Orbi” Easter message, a kind of papal commentary on the state of the world’s affairs, which he delivered from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Square.

He had just celebrated Mass in rain-whipped St. Peter’s Square for tens of thousands of people, who huddled under umbrellas or braved the downpour in thin, plastic rain-slickers.

Easter day is “so beautiful, and so ugly because of the rain,” Francis said after Mass about Christianity’s most important feast day.

He expressed thanks for the flowers that bedecked the square and which were do-

nated by the Netherlands, but the bright hues of the azaleas and other blossoms seemed muted by the gray skies.

Francis made his first public comments about the recent framework for an accord, reached in Lausanne, Switzerland, and aimed at ensuring Iran doesn’t develop a nuclear weapon.

Francis prayed that the “roar of arms may cease”

in Syria and Iraq, and that peace would come in Africa for Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan and Congo.

He recalled the young people, many of them targeted because they were Christians, killed last week in a Kenyan university, and lamented kidnappings, by Islamic extremists, that have plagued parts of Africa, including Nigeria.

He also cited bloodshed closer to home, in Ukraine, praying that the Eastern European nation would “rediscover peace and hope thanks to the commitment of all interested parties.” Government forces have been battling Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine, months after a cease-fire was proclaimed following international diplomatic efforts.

On Good Friday, Francis chastised the international community for what he called the complicit silence about the killing of Christians. On Easter he prayed that God would alleviate “the suffering of so many of our brothers persecuted because of his name.”

Nuke agreement risks projecting U.S. weakness

By DAN PERRY The Associated Press CAIRO – On a basic level, the framework deal between world powers and Tehran will be judged by whether it prevents an Iranian bomb, but that will take years to figure out.

A more immediate issue is the projection of Western power. Supporters of the framework deal can argue the U.S. and world powers extracted significant concessions from Iran, breaking a decade-long impasse and proving that diplomacy backed by tough sanctions can bring about positive change even in the Middle East.

But if, as critics contend,

the agreement ends up projecting U.S. weakness instead, that could embolden rogue states and extremists alike, and make the region’s vast array of challenges -– from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Syrian civil war to the fighting in Libya and Yemen -– even more impervious to Western intervention.

The United States wants to rein in Syria’s President Bashar Assad as his ruinous civil war grinds into its fifth year. It would like to encourage more liberal domestic policies in Egypt and push Iraq’s leaders to govern more inclusively.

Despite years of setbacks, the U.S. would still like to see a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

But if leaders in those places read the fine print of the agreement the U.S. and other world powers hope to reach with Iran by June 30 and conclude they were duped or have flinched, these leaders will be less likely to give in to pressure in the future, rendering the Iran agreement a lonely foreign policy achievement clouded by the region’s chaos.

The implications first might be seen in Iran itself.

If the agreement leads to acceptance of Iran’s theocracy, hard-liners could feel less pressure to curb their support of regional militant groups and crack down even harder on dissent at home.

WASHINGTON – As the April 15 tax deadline nears, people who got help paying for health insurance under President Barack Obama’s law are seeing the direct effect on their refunds – hundreds of dollars, for better or worse.

The law offers tax credits so people without access to jobbased health insurance can buy private coverage. Because these subsidies are tied to income, consumers must accurately estimate what they will make for the coming year.

That’s been a challenge for millions of people.

Guess on the low side, get more help now with premiums, but owe money later at filing time. Overestimate income, expect bucks back from the taxman.

Many consumers may not have understood that is how it works when they signed up. Some experts caution that such complications could discourage uninsured people from getting covered.

Rob Tuck of Dublin, California, said he had anticipated a refund of about $400 on his 2014 taxes. But that almost has been

wiped out because he had to repay some of the subsidy. He changed jobs during the year, and his income went up a little.

Tuck, who works for a San Francisco area tech-support company, said he enrolled to avoid tax penalties for being uninsured, but feels penalized anyway now.

“I was expecting to get dinged a little bit, but I was actually kind of surprised when it came down that much,” he said.

Kelsey Park started out 2014 in Dallas, earning good commissions by selling wedding gowns. She left for graduate school at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and signed up for coverage through the law. She ended up overestimating her income because she didn’t get another job as anticipated.

Park’s tax refund came to $2,500, partly because she had too much income tax withheld and partly because she received a smaller health care subsidy than she was entitled to.

“It was hard to estimate what I would be earning because I was transitioning in life,” said Park, who’s studying for a master’s degree in marketing.

Indiana faces long road to fix image after religious law furor

By LAURYN SCHROEDER The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana tourism agencies are rolling out campaigns emphasizing that everyone is welcome, but it might not be enough to quickly restore the state’s battered image after a backlash over its religious objections law.

An uproar sparked by fears that the law would allow discrimination against gays and lesbians led a few convention organizers and performers to cancel events and some state and local governments to ban travel to the state last week.

Revisions to the law’s language have eased some of the criticism, but experts say the state could be dealing with a damaged reputation for years to come.

The agency has been scrambling to prevent groups and businesses from either pulling out of negotiations for future conventions or canceling upcoming events altogether.

Two groups, including the public employee union AFSCME, have canceled conventions, and Gahl said two others were on the fence. He put the economic impact of those events at a “healthy eight figures.”

“What keeps us up at night is the fact that 75,000 people depend on tourism for a paycheck,” Gahl said. “And if we don’t fill the city with conventions and visitors, they don’t work.”

German crash co-pilot’s profile sparks questions, deep unease

By FRANK JORDANS The Associated Press BERLIN – The profile that has emerged of Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz has become more troubling by the day.

In the hours after Flight 9525 crashed in the French Alps two weeks ago, Lubitz was seen as one of 150 victims in an unexplained disaster.

Two days later, he was the prime suspect.

By now, French and German prosecutors have little doubt the 27-year-old intentionally slammed the Airbus A320 into a mountain, killing everyone on board, and there is growing evidence his actions weren’t just a split-second decision but the result of days of planning.

The revelations have raised questions about who knew

what and when, and whether Lubitz could have been stopped.

The crash has prompted particular soul-searching in Germany. Seventy-two of those killed were German citizens, the worst air disaster in the nation’s history since the Concorde crash of 2000, in which 97 Germans died.

Investigators have pieced together a picture of Lubitz by analyzing the voice and flight data recorders found at the crash site, searching his homes in Duesseldorf and Montabaur, and by interviewing friends, relatives, colleagues and doctors.

Among what they have communicated about their findings: • Medical records show that before he received his pilot’s license, Lubitz suffered from depression, with doctors re-

cording “suicidal tendencies.”

It forced him to take a break of several months from his pilot training. Lufthansa has said Lubitz informed their flight school when he returned in 2009 he had experienced an episode of “severe depression.” But Germanwings, the Lufthansa subsidiary Lubitz joined in 2013, said it was unaware of this. But both airlines say Lubitz passed all medical tests and was cleared by doctors as fit to fly.

• In the months before the crash, Lubitz sought help from several doctors, including specialists at Duesseldorf’s University Hospital. The hospital declined to confirm reports Lubitz was experiencing vision problems but said he had come in for tests. Duesseldorf prosecutors say there was no evidence the co-pilot had any physical ailments.

Exhausting and a tad ugly, but thrilling Providence’s eight-inning, 17-12 tourney win over JCA was something else VIEWS Dick Goss Matt Diehl admitted he was exhausted.

Physically, mentally and any other way imaginable.

All the participants in Saturday night’s wild championship game of the WJOL/ Don Ladas Memorial Baseball Tournament would describe their feelings similarly. It was exhausting enough merely to watch Providence’s 17-12, eight-inning victory over Joliet Catholic. Imagine being on the field.

“The ups and downs in the last couple of innings – it was very nerve-wracking,” said Diehl, who had four of Providence’s 19 hits. “It was exciting, and to win this was very much of a big deal for us.”

The Celtics claimed their fourth championship in the 11-year history of the tournament. But they never won one quite like this, and they probably will not again.

How often have you seen a game between two previously unbeaten teams where 11 pitchers were summoned and there were 31 hits, 13 walks, six hit batsmen and nine errors?

The appropriate description may be to call this one “ugly.” It was that, but a whole lot more.

And yet, both teams showed why they are off to strong starts and considered to be among teams to reckon with in the state.

JCA – which never led – trailed, 3-0, in the second inning and scored three in the bottom of the inning to draw even. The Hilltoppers were down, 8-3, in the fourth and rallied back to within 8-6.

Then came the seventh-inning 6-spot to force extra innings.

“They put up that 6-spot and tie it, and there’s so much momentum going their way, and we come right back and score five,” Providence coach Mark Smith said. “I hope a

“We let them back in it when we had it,” tournament MVP and Providence designated hitter Jackson Dvorak said. “But I definitely think this game shows we are not going to give up anytime. You can never count us out.”

Dvorak hit two three-run homers in the Celtics’ quarterfinal win over Minooka, had a walkoff single in the eighth inning of the semifinal win over Joliet West and reached base five times in six at-bats in the

title game, including being hit by a pitch three times.

It was the kind of night where you see things you seldom, if ever, will see again.

“Baseball is a crazy game,” JCA coach Jared Voss said.

“Both sides went through some pitching, and both sides battled. That was typical of the Joliet Catholic-Providence rivalry.

“For us to come back and score six in the bottom of the seventh, I thought that was awesome on our kids’ part. It was just one of those games

where we couldn’t get the lead. We’d get back in it, and they would come right back and score more.”

Providence (7-0) won the Class 4A state championship last season. Smith and his staff are working with a different cast in 2015, as graduation losses were significant. Yet victories keep coming.

JCA (5-1) is ranked among the best teams in the state.

The loss to Providence does not change that thinking.

Hilltoppers played the championship game without Nick

Dalesandro, their outstanding catcher and cleanup hitter, who was ejected for questioning a strike call in the second inning of Saturday’s semifinal win over Plainfield Central, yet they refused to quit.

“Nick’s a competitor,” Voss said of Dalesandro. “He’s a leader, and he knows there is a lot at stake. I think he will get something out of this situation like any kid would.

There is nobody who wanted to be out here playing in this game any more than him.”

Whether Dalesandro’s presence would have changed the outcome, we never will know.

Several players on each side stepped up when they were needed most. That includes Dalesandro’s replacement, junior Dan Devine. He had a two-out, two-run single in the second inning to get the Hilltoppers on the board and reached on an error in the sixrun seventh.

Providence totaled 19 hits.

All the starters plus Matt Waznis, who entered in the seventh inning and went 2 for 2, hit safely at least once.

“We walked some guys and made some errors – but 18 or 19 hits or whatever they got, they did a lot of hitting,” Voss said.

Last year’s title game went into extra innings as well, and JCA lost to Minooka, 1-0, in one of the most well-played games you will see. This year’s final was a completely different sort of struggle, yet in its own way, it provided an equal amount of thrills.

You expect nothing less from a Providence-JCA clash.

STARTING IN TRIPLE-A

To follow up on a story we have been following, neither outfielder Joe Benson (JCA) nor pitcher Mike Foltynewicz (Minooka), two big names of past WJOL Tournaments, will begin the major league season with the Atlanta Braves. Both went down to the final day of spring training before they were sent to Triple-A Gwinnett.

By RYAN WOODEN Shaw Media Correspondent COAL CITY – When he thinks about the number 2,671, Coal City football coach Lenny Onsen has to pause a moment to let its significance sink in.

It is a hefty number on its own, but when Onsen considers the two ACL surgeries that were overcome and the Class 4A semifinal run the number fueled, it’s easy to see why he is at a loss for words.

2,671 – that’s how many yards Coal City running back Jack Dibble totaled in 2014, making him one of the top running backs in the state and one of the great Coaler ball carriers of all time. Dibble recently vowed to continue his football career this fall at North Central College in Naperville.

“When I say the number, ‘2,671 yards,’ it’s hard to fathom at times,” Onsen said of Dibble’s incredible senior year.

“He’s such a great example we can use for the future. He never quit, and he just kept working his tail off, and he came back [from injuries] and had a fantastic year.”

Although Derrick Rose publicly fought back from a string of knee injuries that essentially sidelined him since 2012, Dibble eventually triumphed over his own pair of knee injuries that cost him the bulk of both his

sophomore and junior seasons.

In his first game in nearly two full years, Dibble found the end zone fewer than three minutes into the season opener against Reed-Custer. It was the start of what would be a special senior year.

“Obviously, I could have never expected over 2,600 yards,” Dibble said. “I had worked really hard, so I was prepared. But if you’d have told me that it’d go like that, I’m not sure I’d have believed you.”

Throughout the year, Dibble made big plays as Coal City finished with a 10-3 record. He caught the go-ahead touchdown in a thrilling comeback against Plano and piled up 358 yards with four 50-plus-yard touchdowns in a blowout against Lisle.

He was strong in a hardfought loss to Manteno in the de facto Interstate Eight Large championship. And then, when the Coalers got a rematch in the state quarterfinals, he was even better, rushing for 283 yards and four touchdowns in a thrilling, last-minute victory.

Because of the gaudy numbers Dibble put up throughout the year in one of the state’s best Class 4A conferences and then in the playoffs, Dibble began getting some looks from colleges. However, it wasn’t until an overnight visit to North Central that he made his collegiate

intentions known.

“I met a lot of the players [on the visit], and I just really liked the guys there,” Dibble said. “All the coaches were really professional, and I just got a really good feel for them. It really had almost like a family feel, and they win a lot of games, too, so it will be a lot of fun to play there.”

Dibble said North Central plans to keep him at running back, with Oshayne Brown (the top returning rusher from last year’s 8-2 team) entering his senior season and Ryan Kent graduating. That certainly was a selling point with others schools recruiting him to play slot, but he now looks forward to helping out however he can in the fall.

“I’m very, very willing to play special teams if that’s what they ask. Whatever it takes to get me on the field,” Dibble said.

“I returned punts and held as a sophomore, so I’d be willing to jump in anywhere they need me.”

As Dibble’s career continues against the odds, he likely never will achieve the same numbers he had last fall. But if there’s anything he proved after returning from two knee injuries in a spectacular senior year and earning a spot to play in college, it’s that there’s more to yards than a number – no matter how large that number is.

PALOS HILLS – The Joliet West and Romeoville girls track teams both placed in the top five Saturday at the Cathy Harper Invitational at Stagg.

West was second with 117 points, three behind champion Hononegah. Romeoville took fourth with 45. Plainfield Central (29) was sixth, Joliet Central 12th and Joliet Catholic 14th.

Joliet West won the 3,200-meter relay, 800 relay, the 3,200 (Madeline Blaauw), 100 (Melzina Johnson), 800 (Charlotte Youell), 1,600 (Kiersten Perry) and long jump (Melzina Johnson).

Duke, Wisconsin step into spotlight

By DAVE SKRETTA The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS – Duke languished in the shadows of Kentucky all season, the big blue juggernaut nobody seemed to be talking about. It was a rarity for a program with such a championship pedigree, not to mention a record-setting coach and superstar freshmen.

They can thank Wisconsin for finally returning to the limelight.

The fun-loving Badgers ended the Wildcats’ pursuit of perfection in the national semifinals, and set up an intriguing showdown in tonight’s title game: Duke trying to give Mike Krzyzewski his fifth national championship, Wisconsin trying to capture its first in 74 years.

“I don’t think basketball fans that I know would ever say that Duke didn’t have a good team,” countered Badgers coach Bo Ryan, who won four Division III titles at Wisconsin-Platteville.

“A lot of people thought they had a pretty good team because they spanked our team at our place in December,” he said. “I can’t say that they were ignored, that’s for sure.”

Yet the buzz at the Final Four this week was focused on Kentucky. The only folks giving the Badgers much of a chance were wearing red and white and scarfing down cheese.

Along with the coach in the other locker room.

“Coming into the year, I thought they’d be the best team in the country, and they have been,” Krzyzewski said.

“It’s just that Kentucky’s undefeated performance has overshadowed just how good Wisconsin has been, until (Saturday) night. There aren’t any shadows anymore.”

The Blue Devils (34-4) have run roughshod through the NCAA Tournament, relying on suffocating defense and game-changing freshman Jahlil Okafor to shut down opponents.

They’re allowing just 55 points a game, one of the finest defensive performances in tournament history.

Meanwhile, Okafor and his merry band of freshmen – Justise Winslow, Tyus Jones and Grayson Allen – have risen to the challenge of the game’s biggest stage. The four led the way in a semifinal blowout of Michigan State, a game never in question after the first five minutes.

“We want to be one of those teams that coach is bragging about five, seven years later,” senior guard Quinn

Cook said. “So that’s the motivation for us, to be special.”

As if they needed any more motivation, Krzyzewski has been waving his 2010 title ring in their faces all tournament. He earned it in Indianapolis, in the same building as this year’s Final Four, and steps away from where he won his first championship at the Hoosier Dome in 1991.

The lovable goofballs from Wisconsin (36-3) are standing in their way, and nobody can argue they haven’t earned the right. Only three other teams have faced the highest possible seed in every game on the way to the championship since the field expanded to 64 in 1985.

Two of those lost in the title game.

None had to face another No. 1 seed.

“They know they have a chance to make a mark in history. They understand that,” Ryan said Sunday. “But they’re enjoying it while they do it, and that’s important, too.”

Indeed, the Badgers have become the clown princes of the NCAA Tournament. From messing with stenographers to podium hijinks, to their penchant for playing Super Smash Bros., the free-spirited Big Ten champs have taken an entire fan base – and plenty of casual fans – on quite ride.

“That’s just how we are,” explained the Badgers’ Sam Dekker. “Some people tell us on Twitter, ‘Focus, guys!’

But that’s just us. We know when to focus.”

Or, as teammate Nigel Hayes put it, “We don’t try to be ourselves. We just ARE ourselves.”

What they are is an offensive powerhouse led by AP player of the year Frank Kaminsky that is averaging nearly 80 points in the tournament.

They’re a veteran group that’s been through the grind.

They’re the counter argument to all those critics who argue the college game has fallen off, that scoring is down, execution is sloppy and the product has never been worse.

They’re also the team that already has avenged a heartbreaking loss to Kentucky in last year’s national semifinals, and is now one step away from its first championship since 1941.

“Whatever this team accomplishes Monday night, one way or the other, it’s still who they are,” Ryan said. “I’ve never been concerned if there are people that perceive us a different way, because we are who we are. We play the way we play. We’re sure happy with it.

So we can live with that.”

His prayer was answered, and it wasn’t the only one for the Cavaliers on Sunday.

Irving casually dropped a 52-foot 3-pointer, J.R. Smith made eight 3s – highlighted by

a desperation one to end the first half – and James recorded his first triple-double with the Cavs in five years as Cleveland won its 18th straight at home, 99-94 over the Bulls.

The Cavs made 16 3-pointers, three as time was draining from the game or shot clock.

“I’ve been doing this a long time,” Cleveland coach David Blatt said, shaking his head.

“I’ve never seen three like that

in one game.”

The Bulls haven’t, either.

“The basketball gods were on their side today,” Joakim Noah said.

Irving scored 27 points, but it was his dramatic shot in the third quarter that helped the Cavs move closer to a Central Division title and securing the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

With the Cavs leading 70-

60, Irving caught the inbounds pass thinking there were still 22 seconds left on the 24-shot clock. James, who was setting a screen, yelled to Irving and his long shot hit nothing but net.

“It was a crazy play,” he said. “Luckily, it went in.

There was no skill there. I was just throwing it up at the rim, and hopefully it goes in.”

Both Irving and James had similar reactions, shrugging

and throwing their hands in the air.

Mike Dunleavy scored 24 and Aaron Brooks 17 for the Bulls, who could have star guard Derrick Rose back in the next few days.

James finished with 20 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds, his first triple-double in a Cleveland uniform since May 13, 2010, two months before he left as a free agent for Miami.

This week’s deals have an unusual feature in common. You will do very well to see it because they look dissimilar, but all will be understood – revealed – on Saturday. Keep the columns to compare.

First, South is in four spades. How should he plan the play after West leads the spade queen?

These days, South’s one-spade rebid shows a four-card suit and is forcing for one round. (Instead, a jump to two spades would be the artificial fourth-suit game-forcing.

Then South would typically be trying to get into three no-trump but would need his partner to have a spade stopper.) North is just worth his fourspade raise, but if he bids only three spades, South would venture higher, perhaps offering three no-trump en route.

When the opponents bid all four suits and land in the fourth, lead a trump; hence West’s choice of the spade queen.

It may look tempting to ruff dummy’s three low clubs in the South hand. But if declarer does that, he goes down with best defense. (The curious may try it.)

It is better to take the first trick with dummy’s king, cash the spade ace, and play a diamond. If South is allowed to win that trick, he leads another diamond and discards a club from dummy. Even if West has the diamond ace and draws trumps, declarer will have 10 tricks: two spades, three hearts, four diamonds and one club. ******

• Mefloquine (Lariam) is the treatment of choice for travel to areas with high levels of chloroquine-resistant malaria parasites.

• Doxycycline (Vibramycin) is usually prescribed for travelers who can’t take chloroquine or mefloquine.

• Tovaquone and Proguanil (Malarone).

This combination drug is prescribed to prevent chloroquine-resistant malaria when you are traveling in areas where there is a higher rate of that kind of malaria.

In addition to one of these drugs, you also may need to take a medication called primaquine when you return home.

This extra precaution further reduces the risk you will develop malaria, even if you were taking an antimalarial drug during your trip.

To further reduce your risk, do your best to prevent mosquito bites. The following steps can help: • When possible, stay indoors in well-screened areas, especially at night when mosquitoes are most active.

• Use mosquito nets and bed nets. Treat the nets with the insect repellent permethrin.

• Wear clothes that cover most of your body.

• Use an insect repellent that contains DEET or picaridin. Apply directly to your skin.

• Apply permethrin to clothing.

If you do develop malaria, fortunately, effective treatments are available.

Dear Reader: Malaria is a serious disease caused by the Plasmodium parasite. The parasite is not found today in the United States or Canada, but it is common in areas to which North Americans travel: Africa, Asia and Central and South America. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there are over 200 million new cases of malaria each year around the world.

The good news is there are only 1,000-2,000 cases of malaria reported in the U.S. each year. That’s because most people traveling to parts of the world with malaria take antimalarial medications.

You get malaria when you are bitten by an infected mosquito. Once the parasite enters your body, it infects and multiplies inside your liver and red blood cells. Symptoms of malaria include: • High fever (up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit) with shaking chills, • Profuse sweating, • Fatigue, • Headache, • Muscle aches, • Abdominal discomfort, • Nausea, vomiting, • Feeling faint when standing up or sitting up quickly.

Without treatment, malaria sometimes can be fatal.

Anyone traveling to a region of the world with malaria should take preventive medication. You start taking these medications before your trip starts and continue taking them for several days to weeks after you return.

Dear Abby: My wife, “Connie,” and I have been together for 30 years and have a wonderful marriage.

She’s a schoolteacher, and I travel on business often.

I think the time away from each other is good; it gives us a chance to enjoy some “me” time.

Connie is a genuinely nice person and makes friends easily, which I admire. However, over the last five years she has become very close with a divorced woman who teaches at her school. They text each other seemingly nonstop, and when I travel, they always get together for a movie or dinner.

I like Connie’s friend, and I used to be included – or at least invited – to anything they did. Now, if I suggest we all go out, Connie says her friend has other plans or she’s sick.

I’m not really concerned that there’s any kind of physical relationship between them, but I feel their friendship has become like an “emotional affair.”

When I brought this up with my wife, she said, “You don’t want me to have any friends?”

What bothers me is that I used to be Connie’s best friend, but I feel I have been replaced. She tries to reassure me I’m still No. 1, then goes off into her bathroom to text with her friend. I think it’s obvious she gets something from this relationship she doesn’t get from me.
