JOLIET – Presence Health announced Monday a new leadership structure for the Catholic hospital network’s south suburban region that includes Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and Presence St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee.

Lowell Johnson will be the new regional CEO with a focus on Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, according to a news release from the health system.

Johnson will assume leadership responsibilities effective immediately, replacing Kathleen Rhine, who was named to the role in February 2015 following the resignation of Beth Hughes. Rhine will temporarily stay on as CEO of Presence St. Mary’s Hospital until a replacement can be

JOLIET – Police are investigating after a man’s body was found Monday afternoon in a car parked at Kirby Plaza.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said a 911 call received about 1:40 p.m. brought officers to the parking lot of Dollar General, 916 W. Jefferson St., where the body was found in a blue Chevrolet Cobalt.

According to the Will County Coroner’s Office, the body was in the car’s backseat.

“There are no initial signs of foul play, but we’ll have to wait for the autopsy to determine the next step in the investigation,” Roechner said.

After police evidence technicians photographed the scene, a deputy coroner placed the body into a body bag shortly after 3:30 p.m. and loaded it into a van to be transported to the morgue.

The man’s identity is being withheld until next of kin are notified, according to

found, according to the news release.

When reached by phone Monday afternoon, Presence spokesman Robert Scarola declined to comment further outside of what was in the news release.

Cass Street bridge next up for paint job

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mary Jaworski’s reaction Monday morning was probably like that of many drivers approaching the Jefferson Street bridge in downtown Joliet.

“I came downtown this morning, and I saw it, and I thought, ‘Darn, today’s that day,’ ” Jaworski said.

Monday was the day the Jefferson Street bridge was closed – again – for a paint job that started in July.

It is the first of two bridge paint jobs planned this year. The Jefferson Street job is expected to be done in June, and that will be followed by paint work on the Cass Street bridge.

The discovery of structural problems interrupted a paint job that was to be completed in October. The Illinois Department of Transportation, which oversees bridge maintenance, reopened the Jefferson Street bridge Nov. 4 and announced then it planned to close the bridge again April 4 to finish the job.

Jaworski, president of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry, was heading downtown about 7:30 a.m. Monday, which was early enough that the bridge closing created only a five-minute delay.

After 8 a.m., traffic begins to back up along the detour routes, she said.

“I move up my normal drive times when traffic is heavy,” she said, adding that she allows for delays of 10 to 15 minutes. “It’s really difficult for the people who work down here. I understand the need. But it is difficult for the people who do this every day.”

Bridge closings are part of doing business downtown, but not necessarily an appealing one.

Going ‘around and around’

Business did get “a little slower” during the bridge closing last year, said Tony Sales, owner of the Route 66 Diner downtown.

Customers “complain because they go around and around,” Sales said.

“They complain because they could go someplace closer.”

The drawbridges are the connection between downtown and the West Side of the city.

The official detour for the Jefferson Street bridge closing is to take Raynor Avenue south to McDonough Street.

Use the McDonough Street bridge to cross the river and take Chicago Street north into downtown.

It’s not a complicated detour. But one-way streets downtown can contribute to the “around and around” effect mentioned by Sales.

Cass Street plans

Jefferson Street is a one-way bridge heading east, which means the closing only effects drivers coming in from the West Side.

Westbound travelers, however, can start making detour plans for when Cass Street, a westbound-only bridge, closes later.

“They plan on being done in the middle of June [on Jefferson Street],” Joliet Public Works Director James Trizna said. “When they get done on that, they plan on painting Cass Street

next.”

Impact on events

That likely will mean one bridge closed throughout the summer. Event planners hope the closures don’t hurt attendance.

“When we have closures like this, we try to get the word out as much as possible,” said Sarah Strickland, marketing manager for the City Center Partnership that promotes downtown.

The City Center Partnership begins its downtown Farmers Markets on June 8. On July 7 is Nitro Nite, a street festival staged in conjunction with the NHRA Nationals held at Route 66 Raceway.

The city last year persuaded IDOT to delay the start of the Jefferson Street paint job until after Nitro Nite. It’s not clear when IDOT plans to start the Cass Street project. Given last year’s experience, it’s hard to be sure when the Jefferson Street job will be done.

A ‘last-ditch attempt’ to save the Rialto Joliet City Council to vote Tuesday on proposed agreement

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk on Monday described a proposed intergovernmental agreement as a “last-ditch attempt to keep the Rialto open.”

The Joliet City Council is slated to vote Tuesday on the agreement with some council members suggesting changes and with no clear indication that the Rialto Square Theatre board would go along with city plans for an investigation.

But the mayor said time for the theater could run out if the intergovernmental agreement is not approved.

“This is a last-ditch attempt to keep the Rialto open,” O’Dekirk said at a workshop meeting Monday.

“They are about to close their doors.

We were told how close Friday.”

O’Dekirk did not elaborate on the Rialto’s financial problems other than to say that the theater is likely to come back to the city for more money.

The city already has paid about $120,000 in payroll taxes and expects to pay $200,000 more in performers’ fees for shows this week. The Rialto is fast using up the $600,000 the city has budgeted for its annual contribution.

“They’re going to come back and ask us to bail them out.”

The intergovernmental agreement commits the city to paying balances due on performance contracts until the Rialto has used up its full $600,000 annual allotment. Typically, the city

pays the money in quarterly installments.

In turn, the Rialto would open itself up to an investigation by city Inspector General Chris Regis, who could inspect records, question current and former employees, interview board members, and review all oper-

ations.

The Rialto board has not indicated whether it will accept an inspector general investigation but meets Wednesday to consider the intergovernmental agreement.

While the council appears to want an inspector general investigation of the Rialto, some members Monday questioned a separate proposal that would generally give the inspector general authority to investigate any organization or governmental body that receives money from the city.

“It’s kind of big brother at its finest,” Councilman John Gerl said, noting that the city is giving the county $10 million as an incentive to keep its new courthouse downtown. “Are we going to bust in the county doors and investigate them?”

The city also would hire Oak Brook accounting firm CliftonLarsonAllen to do a financial review of the theater.

Some council members questioned whether the city should spend money for the accountants.

But City Manager Jim Hock said the city needs to get a grasp on the Rialto’s financial situation and its prospects for a turnaround.

“We need this expertise,” Hock said, “and we need it yesterday.”

PLAINFIELD

Trustees move Playa Vista development plans forward

PLAINFIELD – A developer’s plan to build out an unfinished neighborhood into a single-family home subdivision at Ridge Road and 135th Street will move forward after the village board’s approval Monday night.

Under the plan, Playa Vista – a previously unfinished senior living community would be turned into a single-family housing development – would be built with 321 units, including six town homes.

While the vote was unanimous, some trustees noted disappointment that the developer and one disgruntled homeowner couldn’t reach an agreement before the vote.

Trustee Jim Racich expressed his concern that the resident – Christina Kupkowski – did not attend the board meeting and was unable to reach some consensus with the New Lenox-based Hartz Construction over the past two weeks.

However, the project must move forward, he said.

“I think the greater good is being served in Plainfield by continuing with positive growth, a thing we definitely need,” Racich said.

As one of the few Playa Vista residents living in a townhouse now, Kupkowski previously had argued her home will be surrounded by larger model homes, making it a hard sell in the future.

Plans for the subdivision have

changed over time, but recent changes were born out of the developer’s inability to sell with the original 2007 plans for the property, which was age-restricted.

The repositioning gives the project the “best chance of success,” which would in turn benefit the village, said Jonathan Proulx, village staff planner.

Proulx said Hartz representative Mike Martin and the company made a “good-faith effort” to negotiate a deal with the homeowner, but that it never came to fruition.

Construction could start as early as this fall.

The subdivision is in Kendall County and served by the Oswegoland Park District and Oswego School

District 308. The developers agreed to dedicate about 4.5 acres within the subdivision area for park district development.

In other news:

• Two new police hires were sworn in by Plainfield Mayor Michael Collins. Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek said the two will leave for police academy training in Springfield and remain there until the end of June.

The two police hires were included in the $52.9 million spending plan approved last month that accounts for potential state cuts, rising health insurance costs and contractual salary increases while providing $3.5 million more in capital improvements.

Lockport’s Big Run Wolf Ranch reopens

bstanley@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The Big Run Wolf Ranch has reopened after passing another federal inspection.

Attorney Jennifer Kearney, who has represented ranch operator John Basile, said the animal sanctuary at 14857 N. Farrell Road was allowed to reopen Friday.

“The Department of Agriculture found no noncompliant issues and the suspension [of Basile’s exhibitor’s license] was lifted,” Kearney said.

Basile agreed to a one-month suspension after violations were discovered during an August 2015 inspection.

He also paid a $6,300 fine to settle a federal complaint.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, wolves, a bear and a Siberian tiger were kept in inade-

quate enclosures, did not receive needed veterinary care and nutrition, and could’ve threatened the public.

Basile said last month repairs were made on everything noted in the August report. Kearney said no violations were found when a routine USDA inspection was performed Jan. 26.

In February 2014, Basile brought the young tiger into Uncle Richie’s Bar in downtown Lockport to promote a “Wildfest” event at the ranch. He was walking the animal on a leash down Ninth Street when a passing police officer noticed the commotion, according to police reports. A woman told investigators the tiger had also been in the bar two months earlier and bitten her hand.

Basile pleaded guilty in August 2015 to disorderly conduct and was sentenced to a year of court supervision and a $500 fine.

Will County deputy uses Narcan to treat heroin overdose

bstanley@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP – A Will County sheriff’s deputy was able to revive a man from a heroin overdose last week in Wilmington Township.

About 7:15 a.m. March 25, a 28-year-old man was discovered unresponsive in a Lakeside Terrace residence by a relative, sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

The relative called 911 Jake Debus and Deputy Jake Debus were sent to the house.

“The relative told Deputy Debus the subject had a past history of heroin use,” Hoffmeyer said.

Debus sprayed naloxone hydrochloride into the man’s nostrils and he began to stir before Wilmington firefighters arrived. Before being taken to the hospital, the man admitted injecting heroin shortly before he was found.

Hoffmeyer said Debus is one of 105 sheriff’s deputies trained to use naloxone, or Narcan, which counters the possibly fatal outcome of a heroin overdose. Deputies began carrying Narcan last spring.

The March 25 incident was the second time a deputy has attempted to use the spray and the first time it saved a life, Hoffmeyer said.

“I’m proud more deputies continue training to use this drug and potentially save someone’s life,” Sheriff Mike Kelley said.

Petition seeks investigation into D-210 finances

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – An online petition is collecting hundreds of signatures supporting an investigation by Will County and state agencies into the finances of Lincoln-Way High School District 210.

The Change.org petition was started Friday and has gained 881 out of 1,000 desired signatures as of Monday afternoon.

Ann Jenkins, a Lincoln-Way North parent who authored the petition posted by the Save Lincoln-Way Change. org account, said evidence of suspected financial wrongdoing also would be presented.

“The elephant in the room is why isn’t anybody looking into this? All these things that have been uncovered,” she said.

Since the Lincoln-Way board decided to close North – one of four high schools in the district – to control the deficit spending that landed the district on the state’s financial watch list, the board has been sued by residents who are trying to keep it open.

A call to Superintendent Scott Tingley was not immediately returned Monday.

The Change.org petition states investigative work published by the Edgar County Watchdogs and Daily Southtown “are of extreme concern. … There are many more details of what the taxpayers feel is a misapplication of funds by the Board of Education and administration.”

The petition asks the Will County Sheriff’s Office, Will County State’s Attorney’s Office and Illinois Attorney General’s Office to launch a formal investigation into the financial practices

of the Lincoln-Way board, administration and foundation.

Kathy Hoffmeyer, Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said the office took a report last week from two complainants alleging financial fraud against Lincoln-Way. “We’re not really making any comment on it. We have to look at it further before any decisions are made,” she said.

Charles Pelkie, State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman, said the office met with residents five to six months ago on district issues and nothing was presented that moved toward an investigation.

He said the attorney’s office doesn’t want to supersede the authority of any other agencies reviewing Lincoln-Way. The Illinois State Board of Education has told the district – and five others – it was investigating it to determine if it

qualified for a certification of financial difficulty.

Save Lincoln-Way started a Change. org petition last year gathering signatures to support the option to close Central campus – and keep North open – when the board was still deciding which school to shutter.

A Will County judge granted a motion from the district’s attorneys to dismiss a lawsuit against Lincoln-Way filed by Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite – another resident group opposed to North’s closing – and also denied a motion from LWATU’s attorney for a temporary restraining order.

Stephen Eberhardt, LWATU’s attorney, said he filed an amended complaint Monday to identify the plaintiffs as parents of Lincoln-Way students after Judge Roger Rickmon said legal action was coming from taxpayers, not parents.

Ralph O. Sharp, 58, was pronounced dead near the scene, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

One source said he stepped in front of the vehicle.

The incident occurred about 3:45 p.m.

on the interstate’s westbound side near Cedar Road and Interstate 355, according to a news release from the New Lenox Fire Protection District.

Illinois State Police are investigating.

All westbound lanes of I-80 were

closed for more than two hours after the incident, State Police Sgt. Brad Sprague said, with traffic using only the right shoulder. The lanes reopened about 6:15 p.m. Monday.

Heavens said the move flies in the face of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1999 Olmstead decision, which mandates that people with disabilities be served in the most integrated, appropriate setting – such as community-integrated living arrangements.

The legislation is being pushed by the Chicago nonprofit Misericordia – a 31-acre continuum of care campus that serves more than 600 people with a staff of 1,000.

Sister Rosemary Connelly, the nonprofit’s longtime director, said this

alternative care method provides a choice for families of those with severe developmental disabilities.

Community-integrated living arrangements are not for everyone, yet it’s perceived as the “right and only way,” Connelly said. “[Opponents] are really denying families the right to choice,” she added.

Under the bill, continuum of care facilities would be required to provide community-integrated living arrangements near their campuses, employment opportunities, training programs and skilled-nursing residential care.

But a news release from Access Living of Metropolitan Chicago argues the legislation perpetuates “an antiquated system of service delivery and reinforces Illinois’ historic institutional bias.”

“People with disabilities must be able to live in the community, work in the community, and participate in all aspects of community life together with their peers without disabilities,” the Access Living release states. “Community-based services need greater investment, not institutional providers.”

JOLIET – The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living is pushing back against proposed state legislation that creates a new licensing system for “continuum of care” centers that serve people with developmental disabilities.

House Bill 6304 has been assigned to the Illinois House’s Human Services Committee and is slated for an 8 a.m. hearing Tuesday in Springfield.

The bill would allow the state to apply for a federal waiver under Section 1115 of the Social Security Act, allowing for “an alternative model” of licensing, reimbursement and quality assurance. Such a waiver allows states to test out experimental and pilot programs that do not necessarily meet federal Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program rules.

JOLIET – Two men pleaded guilty Monday in unrelated criminal cases in Will County court.

• Darwin D. Pitts, 27, of Joliet, pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a weapon before Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak. Pitts was sentenced to three years in prison, but is eligible for a “boot camp” program, attorney Michael Renzi said.

On Feb. 12, Joliet police and Will County Sheriff’s deputies used a search warrant to enter Pitts’ residence in the 100 block of Iowa Avenue and found a .22-caliber revolver inside a cabinet in his bedroom, according to court records.

Pitts was on parole at the time from a 2012 conviction for aggravated driving under the influence. Other firearm and drug possession charges were dropped as

a result of the plea.

• Denis Pentsak, 19, of Naperville, pleaded guilty to drug possession and speeding and will receive probation.

Pentsak, who served a month in jail after his arrest, will have to perform 130 hours of community service and attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings, Judge Sarah Jones ordered.

On April 24, 2015, Pentsak was clocked going 109 mph in a 45 mph zone on Route 59 near 83rd Street, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Ashley Kwasneski said.

Naperville police searched the vehicle and found a Sweet Tart that had been laced with a chemical sedative, she said.

Pentsak told Jones he realized he was being “stupid with the car” but has matured and realized the potential consequences.

“It’s disgusting,” Jones said. “He’s tooling around in mom’s BMW while it’s 7 a.m. ... plenty of people on the road taking their kids to school. You think [saying you were young] excuses you? I can assure you, it doesn’t.”

We still need to find someone to help us with plumbing and we need a carpet layer, however.”

Crowther said TMaD intends to branch out and offer two new services for the makeover recipients.

“Last fall we decorated the porch during the Bernickus makeover and the dad said that special touch meant a lot.

When there is an illness in the family, people don’t have time to decorate for the holidays,” Crowther said. “So next year, Holiday D Lights out of Joliet will decorate our ‘heroes’ homes for Christmas.”

Another addition will be a “words of encouragement” mission where the heroes will receive monthly correspondence from volunteers who may not be able to do the physical work.

MORRIS – More than 250 people gathered Saturday at Morris Country Club to support a nonprofit organization that aims to provide hope, healing and comfort for residents of Grundy and Will counties who are disabled, sick or terminally ill.

More than $36,000 (before expenses) was raised in six hours through corporate and personal sponsorship, raffle baskets and silent auction items at the third annual Team Make a Difference fundraiser.

“I want to do one fundraiser a year, and whether we make $5 or $25,000, we will help two families. We will make it work,” TMaD President Audra Crowther said.

TMaD began in 2013 with a vision to renovate a room for a person who was disabled, healing from an illness or terminally ill in which he or she could heal or spend the last days in the comfort of home. The group also takes family photos and provides the family/ individual with a scrapbook of professional photos.

Since 2014 TMaD has taken on two weekend-long makeovers a year – one in the summer and one in the fall – for a

Exelon Braidwood Station grant gives local agency equipment

BRAIDWOOD – A donation by Exelon’s Braidwood Station means Braidwood’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency will no longer have to share equipment with the city’s fire department, according to a news release from the station.

Instead, the tools and equipment they need will be at their disposal for use during both emergency and non-emergency situations.

Braidwood ESDA has been operating for a number of years, but the group has had to rely on the availability of the Braidwood Fire Department’s tools and equipment. In

emergencies, the equipment has not always been available. A $4,000 grant from Exelon is helping meet that need.

Braidwood ESDA provides assistance with traffic control and direction during incidents such as fire scenes, accidents and roadway obstructions, as well as during planned events such as parades or 5K runs.

The group, which includes weather spotters, also responds to disaster incidents and coordinates the city’s emergency operations center.

Woman charged with DUI

JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A crash Monday afternoon in Joliet Township resulted in a motorist being charged with driving under the influence, according to Illinois State Police.

About 3:45 p.m., the 22-year-old woman was traveling northbound on Route 53, State Police Sgt. Brad Sprague said. The driver, whose name was not immediately available, turned left onto Patterson Road in front of a southbound vehicle, causing the crash.

No one involved in the incident required medical treatment and there were no road closures, Sprague said.

SHOREWOOD – Troy Township Supervisor Joseph D. Baltz and Shorewood-Troy Public Library Director Jennie Mills have announced a partnership to bring “Book Buddies” to residents.

The program will pair older adults with preschool-age children in the community as “book buddies,” who will read books to one another, talk about the stories and end the time with a craft that they can do together.

This program will meet once a month beginning at 1:30 p.m. April 28 at the Troy Township Community Center, 25448 Seil Road in Shorewood. The “Book Buddies” will meet every fourth Thursday of the month thereafter.

The program is free for all preschool-aged children and seniors who reside within the Troy Township and/ or the Shorewood-Troy Public Library boundaries.

Born: March 25, 1938; Clay County Died: April 2, 2016; Joliet Ruth Joyce (Kuenstler) Bene’; born March 25, 1938, Clay County. Married March 2, 1957, Wendelin. Died: April 2, 2016, Joliet.

Preceded in death by her husband, John.

Survived by her children, Chris (Dorie), Roberta (Mike) Mulholland, Jerry, Michele (Ken) Schuman, Patrick (Vicki), George (Lisa), Henry (Wendy); 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was an unassuming farm girl from Southern Illinois who knew that God had given her the gifts to raise a family. Early on she helped to raise her younger siblings, and then started her own family at 19. She lived for nothing more than her husband and children. Each of her children has grown to be strong, unique and successful in their own right, and each represents aspects of her great personality. Ruth set an example for her children and others by using her God-given talents in service to her church and in service to the many organizations she was a part of including CCW, Ladies of Columbus and HCE. Although she suffered from Alzheimer’s, one thought that gives us peace is that in heaven her memory will return perfectly and she will again enjoy the lifetime of happiness that raising a family brought her.

Weston Donald Johnson, 27, of Washington state went to be with his Lord on March 22, 2016.

He was born Dec. 5, 1988, in Joliet, to Ramona Weston and Brad Johnson, Weston graduated from Minooka High School in 2007 and then went on to join the U.S. Navy as a submariner in 2009. He was married to Miranda Nicole July 18, 2013.

Weston enjoyed his naval career, traveled the world and he was an avid hunter and fisherman.

JAMES DOUGLAS VOWELS James Douglas “J.D.” Vowels, age 81, of Henderson, KY, passed away at 9:03 a.m.

Friday, April 1, 2016, at Methodist Hospital.

J.D. was born in 1934, to parents George Douglas and Mary Helen Vowels in Waverly, Kentucky. As a boy, he attended St. Peters Grade School in Waverly, KY, followed by high school at St. Vincent Academy, near Waverly, KY. Throughout his schooling, he worked alongside his father and his brother, Robert A., on the family farm. After he graduated high school, J.D. enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He did his basic training at Samson Air Force Base in Geneva, NY, and then went to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, for jet engine school. When his service was complete, at Chennault AFB, Lake Charles, LA. J.D. came home to Morganfield and worked at St. Vincent Academy on a

farm the school owned.

It was here where he met his first wife, Judith E. Humm. Together they had five sons.

The family moved to Joliet, where he worked as a machinist at Caterpillar Inc. for 28 years, after which he retired and moved to Henderson. It was in Henderson where J.D. met his second wife, Paulette. He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. After retirement, J.D. still found time for farm work, and he also drove a school bus. He loved making long trips. His family jokes that his favorite book was the Road Atlas and that, before Google, friends and family would call on J.D. for directions.

In addition to his parents, J.D. was preceded in death by his brother, Don Vowels; and his sister, Helen Jane Parker Hurt.

Survivors include wife of 25 years, Paulette Vowels of Henderson, KY; sons, James E. Vowels and wife, Sue of Plainfield, Tony D. Vowels of Silverton, CO, Donald T. Vowels of St. Peters, MO, Carl R. Barbara M. Springer (Nee Gemo), age 72, late of Lockport, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully March 30, 2016.

Born in Crystal Falls, MI, living in Chicago and residing in the Lago Vista Community, Lockport, for the past 10 years. Retired from Advocate Trinity Hospital Chicago in 2003 after many years of service. Member of St. Dennis Church, Lockport; very active in the Lagos Vista Community, where she enjoyed playing cards, traveling and attending social functions in the club house; but most of all Barbara’s biggest joy in life was her grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jerome Springer (2010); parents, Isidore and Edith (DeRossi) Gemo; one brother, Dennis Gemo; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Illinois medical marijuana sales continue to grow

CHICAGO – Retail sales of medical marijuana in Illinois increased by about 30 percent in March compared with the previous month.

Program director Joseph Wright said the state’s registered dispensaries sold $1.9 million worth of marijuana in March to more than 4,700 patients. It was the best month yet in sales for the program.

Illinois now has 32 registered dispensaries where qualified patients can buy the drug. Three new dispensaries registered in March.

Wright said about 5,500 patients now qualify for the program.

One killed, several hurt in Illinois car-train crash

SKOKIE – Police said one person was killed and several were injured when a train struck a car at a suburban Chicago railway crossing.

Skokie police released a statement Monday saying firefighters freed two people from the mangled car after the late-morning accident.

Chicago Transit Authority spokesman Jeff Tolman said investigators believe the vehicle drove through a grade crossing before the collision.

Police said one of the car’s occupants, a woman, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Evanston St. Francis Hospital spokesman Jim O’Connell said a female passen-

ger in the car was in critical condition and four train passengers were treated for minor injuries.

U of Illinois president: Keep chancellor finalists secret

URBANA – University of Illinois’ Urbana-Champaign President Timothy Killeen wants to keep candidates’ identities secret after he initially said the finalists for chancellor might sit through public interviews.

University spokesman Tom Hardy said Killeen has decided many potential candidates would not apply for the job if their identities were made public.

Last fall, Killeen said he would consider having finalists make public presentations in an effort to make it “a very open, transparent process,” The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported. Hardy said Killeen had since consulted with

Groupon getting a $250M investment from Atairos

NEW YORK – Groupon is getting a $250 million investment from Atairos and is working with Comcast to find potential collaboration opportunities.

Atairos, a private company started earlier this year, is led by Michael Angelakis.

The former Comcast Corp. vice chairman and chief financial officer will become a Groupon board member.

Groupon, an online daily deal service, said that it will use proceeds for general corporate purposes, including stock buybacks. Its board has also approved adding $200 million to its existing share repurchase program and extending it through April 2018.

MILWAUKEE – After Donald Trump’s toughest stretch of the campaign, he and Ted Cruz made spirited final pitches Monday to Wisconsin voters, who will cast ballots Tuesday in a Republican primary that both consider a key step in the race for president.

After Tuesday, there’s a two-week lull before the next important voting, in New York.

Trump is facing pressure on multiple fronts after a difficult week marked by his controversial comments, reversals and rare moments of contrition. While his past remarks on topics such as Mexican immigrants have drawn a backlash, even he appeared to recognize the damage caused by missteps in the lead-up to Wisconsin.

Those included retweeting an unflattering photo of Cruz’s wife and a series of contradictory comments on abortion that managed to draw condemnation from both abortion-rights activists and opponents.

While Trump is the only Republican with a realistic path to clinching the nomination ahead of the Republican convention, a big loss in Wisconsin would greatly reduce his chances of reaching the needed 1,237 delegates before then. A big win for Trump would give him more room for error down the stretch.

He’s facing a tough challenge in Cruz, whom polls show with a lead in Wisconsin. And he has been battered by negative ads. The state’s top Republican advertiser has been Our Principles PAC, which pumped almost $1.3 million into anti-Trump ads. The Club for Growth, which has endorsed Cruz, is spending $800,000 on ads that promote voting for Cruz – not John Kasich

– as the best way to ensure a Trump defeat.

Also, the state’s Republican establishment, including Gov. Scott Walker, and some of its most influential conservative talk radio hosts have lined up to support Cruz.

At the same time, Trump’s campaign has been outmaneuvered by Cruz in some early states where the campaigns are working to ensure that the delegates who attend the convention this summer are loyal to them.

In North Dakota, Cruz’s team, for instance, has been scooping up endorsements from delegates who were selected at the party’s state convention over the weekend.

All 28 delegates will go to the national convention as free agents. But in interviews, 10 said they were committed to vote for Cruz. A few others said they were leaning toward him.

None has endorsed Trump so far.

And while Trump won Tennessee’s March 1 primary, picking up 33 delegates, his supporters have complained that some Trump delegates selected by the state executive committee weren’t actually supporters. They’ll have to vote for Trump on the first two ballots at the convention, but they can vote as they wish on important procedural matters, including the party platform and the rules for the convention.

Our Principles, one of the outside groups devoted to keeping Trump from winning the GOP nomination, has been putting more and more money into the battle for like-minded delegates. The group logged $9,300 worth of calls to Colorado “voters” – in this case delegates – this month and spent at least $34,000 on North Dakota outreach, according to new filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Illinois property taxes are crushing homeowners

Ten years ago, Bonita Hatchett built her dream home in Flossmoor.

A lawyer by trade, she moved to the south Chicago suburb to join a diverse community that included black professionals like herself.

But Hatchett is now planning to leave it all behind. The culprit? Property taxes.

“You’re told all your life: Be educated, be successful, work hard and buy a house, but we’re being abused for doing so,” Hatchett said. “Living in a town like Flossmoor, it’s just not worth it.”

She’s not alone.

Illinoisans pay among the highest property taxes in the nation, according to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

Some Illinoisans’ property-tax bills are more than their mortgage payments.

And the squeeze is getting worse.

Since 1990, the average property-tax bill in Illinois has grown more than three times faster than the state’s median household income, according to Illinois Policy Institute research.

While Hatchett estimates the value of her home has been slashed in half over the past decade, her property tax bill has only gone up. She paid more than $18,000 in property taxes last year – well over 5 percent of what she thinks her house is worth.

Seventy miles from Hatchett’s home, in the northwest Chicago suburb of Crystal Lake, Cassandra Bajak thinks this coming Christmas will be her two children’s last in their home. Since she and her husband, an Army veteran, built the house in 2002, their property-tax bills have doubled – eclipsing their mortgage payments.

Her family now is choosing between a move to a southern state or downsizing in their community.

“We’re being taxed out of our home,” Bajak said. “The only reason we would ever leave our home or this state is property taxes, and that’s what’s going to happen.”

In McHenry County, where the Bajaks reside, property taxes eat up nearly 8 percent of the median household income. What’s worse, Illinoisans aren’t getting much bang for their tax bucks.

Property taxes at the municipal level have not been going to fund spotless roads or other public works. Instead, they’re mostly funding out-of-control pension costs.

Just take a look at Springfield, where 98 percent of the city’s 2014 property tax levy went to pensions. And where, from 2000 to 2014, members of the typical household have seen their property-tax bill grow more than twice as fast as their income.

Despite that, city-worker retirements are still in jeopardy.

While taxpayers have more than doubled their contributions to the local police and firefighter pension systems over the past decade, Springfield’s police pension fund has a mere 53 cents in the bank for every dollar it needs to pay out future benefits; for firefighter pensions, only 45 cents.

Forcing homeowners to keep shoveling more property tax dollars into broken pension systems has become a morally bankrupt solution to the problem.

In Springfield, for example, residents already contribute four times more money into police, fire and municipal employee pensions than do the employees.

The problem is that, in Illinois, state politicians mandate pension benefits for local government workers, with little regard to fairness for local taxpayers.

Many communities would prefer not to pay the high cost of workers enjoying early retirement ages, health

insurance benefits normal residents could never afford, and annual 3 percent cost-of-living adjustments that private-sector workers could only dream of.

So how can the state protect homeowners?

Forcing local governments to begin to live within their means through a property-tax freeze, as has been proposed by Gov. Bruce Rauner, is necessary. But solving the root cause of the property-tax problem will require further reform, such as moving all new government workers from defined-benefit to self-managed retirement plans, transferring the power to negotiate pension benefits down to local leaders, and encouraging aggressive consolidation and resource-sharing across units of local government. For some communities, the only option to undo decades of mismanagement will be bankruptcy.

Until sincere efforts are made at reform, Illinoisans will continue to live in fear: taxpayers of being squeezed out of their homes, and government workers of pension payments that may never come.

cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A pair of boys volleyball teams that averaged 30 wins between them a year ago met for an early season match Monday.

But while Lockport and Joliet Catholic Academy have a few regulars back from those squads, they are joined by many younger players this season.

So although both Porters coach Nick Mraz and his Hilltoppers counterpart, Rhyen Staley, are competitive and don’t like to see their teams lose, they are far more concerned about how they’ll be playing in a few weeks than where they’re at right now.

Lockport played a cleaner match than JCA did to capture a 25-20, 25-19 nonconference home victory.

“We’re returning a few varsity guys from last year, so we have a nice

core with our setters and our libero,” Mraz said. “And our sophomores were conference champions. So it’s just a matter of getting them comfortable with each other. Where you see some of the mistakes that are going on, it’s just about coming together as a team.

The good things that I’m seeing right now are good. We just need to work on when we get sloppy and messy.

“With this team coming together, they need the challenge of me not calling a timeout to bail them out. They need to figure it out themselves on the floor, so I wasn’t going to call a timeout to tell our guys what they already knew they needed to do. Both times they started getting pushed by JCA, they responded. We tell them every day that they have the potential to be a great team, and it’s just a matter of cleaning up the mistakes that we’re making early on.”

The Porters (5-2) never trailed against the Hilltoppers (4-5), who managed to force five ties during the match. The visitors battled back from a few deficits but ultimately couldn’t overcome a large number of unforced errors.

“We’re starting three sophomores, two of which are multi-sport athletes, so that takes time,” Staley said. “We’ve got a sophomore setter running the show after a senior leaves and that’s difficult but it does help to have our big guy, Blake (Reardon), back. The biggest issue is that Lockport did a nice job of not making a lot of errors while we committed over 35 out of 50 points on errors. So that’s a testament to them for just forcing us to do those things.

“Our mindset right now having seen the field of teams, we know that we’re as good as most of them and we

can play well. So our focus is May because if you’re not the best team at the end of May, then it doesn’t mean a lot. Every group is unique and last year’s group knew how to win. This group has to go through the aches and pains, so it’s a balance for me to find out when to push and when to back off.

The next couple of weeks will tell us about our team.”

In the opener, Lockport jumped out to a 13-7 lead after a kill by Jake Skrobin, but JCA scored seven of the next eight points to tie the score at 14.

The Porters moved back in front for good after two kills from Colin Schlink and a block by Kris Aleknavicius.

Although things were tighter in the early going of the finale, the Porters used a 6-0 spurt to grab an 18-11 advantage.

“At the beginning of the season, we were kind of slow since we hadn’t played together much but now after some practices it seems like everyone is together and we’re playing a lot better. We’re getting along and are more like a family, which is cool.”

VIEWS Dick Goss they are the darlings of prognosticators everywhere. There is no reason to believe they cannot win the World Series and end that little drought they have been in.

Except, this is baseball, the most unpredictable game in the world. You can be the best team all season but not win a playoff series because you run into a hot team, or a team with deeper pitching than you have. And, the National League has a half-dozen or more teams that have the pitching and the potential to challenge for a spot in the World Series.

If the Cubs have an Achilles’ heal, pitching will be it. The starting staff might not be good enough after Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester, and the bullpen might not be good enough, either.

Then again, the Cubs have Joe Maddon in the manager’s seat, and he has a proven track record. He gets the most from his teams. Especially if the Cubs hang in there, it will be a blast to listen to the daily broadcasts of Pat Hughes and Lockport graduate Ron Coomer.

On the other side of town, the Sox again concentrated their offseason efforts on improving the offense, and this time they may have succeeded.

However, their pitching can be an issue. Carlos Rodon still must prove himself, the Mat Latos-John Danks combination is scary and, unfortunately, the bullpen is no sure thing, either.

If all questions are answered in a positive manner, then yes, the Sox can contend for a playoff berth. If not, it will be another loser of a summer.

Tyrell on fire: While we’re concentrating on diamond doings, have you noticed what is going on at Lewis?

The Flyers are 15-8, and their shortstop, sophomore Neal Tyrell, a Minooka graduate, is tearing it up. He is hitting .453 (43 for 95) with four doubles, two triples, six home runs (three Sunday in a doubleheader at Indianapolis) and 23 RBIs. He sports a .500 on-base percentage and .726 slugging percentage for a 1.226 OPS. Also at Lewis, two seniors from our area, Joe Sparacio (Plainfield Central) and Austin Mastela (Lockport), also are hitting well. Sparacio is at .385 (30 of 78) with six doubles, a triple, two homers and 18 RBIs. Mastella is hitting .333 (28 of 84) with seven doubles, two homers and 17 RBIs. At St. Francis (18-17), meanwhile,

sophomore pitcher/infielder Kevin Mampe is hitting .350 with six doubles, one triple, one homer and 18 RBIs while junior third baseman Nick Fleischauer (Minooka, JJC) is at .327 with nine doubles, a triple, four homers and 27 RBIs. Mel Deskin: The Joliet area lost one of its excellent, dedicated football coaches when Mel Deskin died March 23 at age 78.

Deskin was the head coach at Lockport West/Romeoville and an assistant for the Joliet Chargers, Joliet Junior College, USF and most recently Joliet Catholic. I always enjoyed seeing him on the sidelines at Hilltoppers’ games.

Before JCA’s baseball game against Minooka last week in the Don Ladas Memorial Tournament, former area football coach Bob Voss and I had a nice talk about his good friend.

He emphasized how much Deskin loved football, and how much he will be missed. Voss’ recollections of the long, sometimes late-night discussions between the two and late Herald-News sports editor Bob Drazkowski, when “Draz” was USF’s sports information director and Voss and Deskin were assistant coaches, were fun to hear.

MLB average salary $4.4M after 4.4 percent increase

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Baseball’s average salary rose 4.4 percent to $4.38 million on opening day, according to a study of contract terms by The Associated Press, and the Los Angeles Dodgers topped spending for the third straight season.

The Cubs boosted payroll by $51 million, adding Jason Heyward, John Lackey and Ben Zobrist in an effort to win their first title since 1908.

After beating the Cubs in the NL Championship Series and losing to Kansas City in the World Series, the New York Mets hiked spending by nearly $38 million.

Houston, coming off its first playoff appearance in a decade, raised payroll by almost $26 million after starting last season with the lowest in the major leagues, and St. Louis also rose by nearly the same amount.

Among rebuilding teams, Philadelphia cut spending by $43 million, Milwaukee by $40 million and Cincinnati by nearly $27 million. At $62.6 mil-

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, at $33 million, is the highest-paid player for the second straight year.

Former teammate Zack Greinke, who left to sign with Arizona, is second at $31.8 million, followed by Boston pitcher David Price at $30 million.

The Dodgers began the season at $233.9 million, down from a record $270.2 million when 2015 began.

The New York Yankees, No. 1 for 15 straight years before the Dodgers’ payroll surge, are second at $225 million followed by Detroit ($196 million), Boston ($190 million) and San Francisco ($173 million).

The average for the 864 players on opening-day rosters, the disabled list and the restricted list was $4,381,980, and the percentage increase was the lowest since a 4.1 rise in 2012.

But if Atlanta had not released Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn in the last week and if Tampa Bay had kept James Loney, the average would have been up 5.4 percent to nearly $4.43 million.

Among the major North American leagues, the NBA has the highest average salary at $6 million this season, according to its players’ union, a figure boosted by the league’s maximum roster of 13 active players per team.

The NHL Players Association calculated the league average at $2,803,043 in 2014-15, the last season available, and the NFL Players Association figured the 2015 average at $2,467,438.

A much-anticipated Major League Baseball season got under way for local fans late Monday as the Cubs visited the Los Angeles Angels and the White Sox visited Oakland.

That was good for night owls, but bad for those who have to work Tuesday morning and are expected to be wide awake on the job.

It also is bad for newspapers with deadlines. To see stories on the Cubs and Sox games, go to www.theherald-news.com. Our plan at this writing is to have stories there by early this morning.

Then again, it is one game of 162 for each team. And like I always say, opening day in baseball is one of the most overrated days on the sports calendar.

The pageantry is fine, but opening day is overrated because so many read so much into what happens in this one game. Until your team gets through its entire starting rotation four or five times, you don’t get a feel for what a team is or is not.

Still, everyone likes to predict what will happen over 162 games. I am asked that often. How do you think the Cubs will do? How do you think the Sox will do?

After the season the Cubs enjoyed in 2015, and with their offseason additions, it is understandable that

Iverson, O’Neal, Yao lead Hall of Fame group

HOUSTON – Despite being elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday, Allen Iverson knows he still won’t be able to shake his infamous rant about practice.

“I’m in the Hall of Fame and I can go outside today and go to a restaurant or whatever and somebody will say to me: ‘Practice? We talking about practice,’” he said with a laugh, adding that even his children mock him for the 2002 news conference in which he repeated the phrase about 20 times. “Man, I am a Hall of Famer and that’s all you can think about – me saying practice.”

Along with Iverson, Shaquille O’Neal, Yao Ming, Sheryl Swoopes, Tom Izzo and Jerry Reinsdorf were elected to the Hall of Fame on Monday.

Posthumous honorees this year include 27-year NBA referee Darell Garretson; John McLendon, the first African-American coach in a professional league; Cumberland Posey, who also is in the Baseball Hall of Fame; and Zelmo Beaty, who led Prairie View to an NAIA title in 1962.

The selections were announced in Houston in advance of Monday night’s NCAA Tournament championship game between North Carolina and Villanova.

All-Star. John Thompson, his coach at Georgetown, was there to celebrate the latest honor with his former player.

“I’m proud of the fact of knowing him as a person and knowing the challenges he’s had to overcome,” Thompson said.

“Allen is legitimate. There’s a lot of impersonators of what he is. But he is a kid who came from basically nothing and had to be thrust into a whole different way of life and been successful as he has been in his profession.”

Iverson was asked to reminisce on the impressive dunking he did in his career

despite being only 6 feet tall.

“I can’t even touch the backboard now,” the 40-year-old lamented. “I ain’t lying. Like I can’t even touch the backboard. It is over.”

O’Neal, the top overall pick in the 1992 draft by the Orlando Magic, was the NBA MVP in 2000, a three-time NBA Finals MVP and 15-time All-Star. When he was introduced Monday at the media event, the jokester scolded the announcer for not mentioning his work in the 1996 movie “Kazaam,” in which he played a genie.

The man who has a plethora of nick-

names was asked whether he hopes to get a new one when he’s inducted into the hall in September.

“No, just Hall of Famer,” he said.

O’Neal had a simple mindset when he entered the NBA, one that he got from his love of karate movies.

“In all your karate movies, you’ve got the young karate warrior and he goes all these places and he sees all these masters and he has to take them out,” O’Neal said. “So I was gunning for everybody. I was gunning for all the superstars, I was gunning for all the big guys, because I wanted their spot and that was my motivation.”

Yao, the top overall pick in 2002 by the Houston Rockets, was an eight-time AllStar. He did not attend the event because he was in Shanghai.

Swoopes helped Texas Tech to a national title, won four WNBA titles with the Houston Comets, was a three-time WNBA MVP and won three Olympic gold medals.

She grew up in the small West Texas town of Brownfield and hopes that her election can be an inspiration to children from small towns everywhere.

Izzo, Michigan’s State coach, won a national title in 2000 and has taken the Spartans to the Final Four seven times.

“This is the biggest thrill of my life,” Izzo said. “I needed a lot of other guys to help me get here.”

Reinsdorf has been the owner of the Bulls and White Sox for more than two decades.

Retired soccer star Wambach faces DUI charges in Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. – Retired World Cup soccer champion Abby Wambach was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence.

Portland police Sgt. Peter Simpson said in a statement Sunday that a sergeant stopped the 35-year-old Saturday night after she reportedly ran a red light in her Range Rover near downtown.

Simpson said Wambach failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. He said she also failed a breath test at the police precinct.

Wambach, who lives in Portland, was booked into Multnomah County Jail early Sunday on a charge of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII) – Alcohol. Jail booking records show she was released Sunday on her own recognizance.

Wambach is the leading career scorer – male or female – in international soccer with 184 goals. She retired in December after 15 years with the U.S. women’s national team.

She issued a statement on her Facebook page Sunday morning, writing she was arrested as she was returning home from dinner at a friend’s house.

“Those that know me, know that I have Abby always demanded exWambach cellence from myself. I have let myself and others down. I take full responsibility for my actions,” she wrote. “This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated.

“I am so sorry to my family, friends, fans and those that look to follow a bet-

ter example.”

The Portland Police Bureau said Wambach was “polite and cooperative throughout the investigation.”

One of Wambach’s sponsors, MINI USA, said Sunday night it was withdrawing ads for the automobile that feature Wambach.

“This behavior is against the values we promote as an organization and the safety of everyone on the road is a priority here at MINI. Because of this, we are re-evaluating her association with the brand and are pulling content that individually features Abby from our marketing,” the company said in a statement. “We will continue to assess the situation and weigh our options.”

Wambach capped her career last summer with the sport’s most prestigious championship when the United States defeated Japan, 5-2, in Canada at the World Cup. It was the third World Cup title for the U.S. women,

and first since 1999.

Wambach announced her retirement in October. Since she stepped away from the team, she has made several appearances in charity events and also campaigned for former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

She played her last match with the team in December, a 1-0 loss to China in New Orleans.

Wambach appeared in four World Cups with the national team. She also has a pair of Olympic gold medals from the 2004 Games in Athens and the 2012 Games in London. She did not compete in the Beijing Games because of a broken leg.

Wambach has also been active in fighting for equal rights for female athletes. She led a group of players in protesting FIFA’s decision to play the 2015 World Cup on artificial turf, which is considered by many players to be inferior to grass.

“And it’s not just at the college level, but at the camp level,” Kosel said. “A couple years ago, it was everyone with the Kevin Durant clothes. Now it’s all the Steph Curry clothes, and you see kids work at losing the ball, then picking it up and shooting it like Curry does.”

But be warned. Curry makes it look easy. It isn’t.

Over the past five years, 3-point percentage has remained basically steady in Division I, rising only 0.3 percentage points to 35.2, according to STATS. Look at the Tar Heels. They have future NBAers galore. But on Saturday, they went 4 for 17 on 3s and, quite the opposite of some of the shots Curry takes, they were toeing the line and getting open looks. They’ve won all season with solid defense and an offense that gets things done in the middle and is nowhere near dependent on 3-point shots falling.

“I’m sure a lot of people patterned their game after Michael (Jordan) but they didn’t turn into Michael,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of his old teammate. “I hope all the young players we play against the next few years are pulling up from 35 feet off the dribble because we’ll probably be rebounding the ball and going the other way.”

To prevent this, some coaches stay on

a Curry-watch of sorts. They’re used to designing intricate offenses and dictating most possessions from the bench. They are wary of abandoning old-school X’s and O’s in favor of the 30-foot jump shot.

“You only want guys doing that if they can shoot like him, and there are very few who can shoot like him,” Charles Barkley said.

All this tilt toward the outside isn’t new. Things have been trending that way since the 1980s, when the 3-pointer was introduced and made this a game that, more and more, is won from the outside.

Curry is taking things to the next level – most notably by making the actual 3-point arc more a suggestion than a line in the sand.

“You look at all the people studying these analytics and trying to figure out what the most efficient shot is,” Smart said. “And if you have good shooters, people want to get as many good looks as they can from outside.”

Good for the game? Miller certainly thinks so. Of course he does.

“Young kids are watching this, saying, ‘I don’t have to be 6-8, 6-9, 6-10, I don’t have to be able to jump over the moon to be successful at this game,’ ” he said. “If I do the little things, if I’m fundamentally sound, if I pass well, if I can shoot, I can be successful.”

HOUSTON – Though he moved on to the NBA long ago, March Madness is also Steph Curry’s world now.

Whether it was the Villanova kid swishing a 40-footer just because he could, or the Northern Iowa guard sinking the half-court buzzer-beater when he had to, reminders of Curry, who burst onto the college scene with double-digit Davidson and has now turned the Warriors into NBA champions, have been stamped all over this year’s NCAA Tournament.

“He’s made the improbable probable,” said Reggie Miller, the former UCLA and Pacers star who was never shy about launching from a distance himself.

Those looking to draw big-picture conclusions about whether college hoops has been irreversibly Curry-ized might view the matchup like this: It’s the Wildcats, who defied every prediction about bad sightlines in Houston’s stadium and shot 11 for 18 from 3-point land against Oklahoma; and it’s the Tar Heels, who rank 290th in the country in 3-point shooting and could barely draw iron from long range for most of their game against Syracuse.

“When the ball goes in,” Texas coach Shaka Smart said, “it’s definitely more

entertaining.”

Earlier in the tournament, Villanova’s Kris Jenkins made one from the edge of the Texas panhandle on the half-court logo. Forward Daniel Ochefu saw it go in, and glanced over at teammate Darryl Reynolds.

“We both got eye contact, like, ‘Wow!’ That was Steph range,’ ” Ochefu said.

Those sorts of shots flew and fell at an outrageous clip over the last month. There was Paul Jesperson’s half-court buzzer beater for NorthSteph Curry ern Iowa; the 70-footer by UConn’s Jalen Adams in the American Athletic Conference tournament; anything Buddy Hield did before Oklahoma’s meltdown against ’Nova.

Bronson Koening summed up his own long-range game-winner for Wisconsin on the first weekend this way: “I just tried to channel my inner Steph Curry.”

But it’s not only this lightning-quick, 6-foot-3 guard’s ability to make outrageous 3s that’s changing things.

“Now, we see all the point guards on the baseline doing what Steph does with the two-ball-dribbling drills and everything else during the warmup,” said Wes Kosel, an assistant coach at Division III

Trump thinks ex-teaching pro will do well at Masters

The Associated Press AUGUSTA, Ga. – An invitation to the Masters might be only the second-best offer Jim Herman got this week.

Less than 24 hours after winning the Shell Open, Donald Trump joked that Herman, a former assistant golf pro at one of his resorts, might be considered for a Cabinet-level post in a new Trump administration.

“That’s a character – the kind of character – you want. Somebody who can handle the pressure,” Trump told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Monday between campaign stops in Wisconsin.

The GOP presidential front-runner was laughing, but dead-serious when he added, “I’m very happy and proud to have helped him out.”

The self-taught scrambler who wouldn’t give up the game and the mogul with a love for golf first came together in 2006. Mickie Gallagher, a mutual friend and the head pro at Trump National in Bedminster, New Jersey, hired Herman as one of his assistants.

Soon enough, Herman got a call that the boss was headed over to play and wanted him to join the foursome.

“I don’t know what it is; when I play with him, I usually play pretty well,” Herman recalled Monday. “But yeah, he’s been a big supporter of mine. He helped me early on in my years financially and maybe just a little shot in the arm of confidence.”

Trump said spotting that kind of talent was a no-brainer, especially as far as Herman hit his tee shots. He backed up his claim by staking the then-struggling 28-year-old to enough money to take a shot on the Web.com Tour “I play with many people. Lots of them think they’re going to be pros, but

you and I know that’s not usually the case,” Trump said. “He’d shoot really low rounds when we played and ... I’d ask him after a round, ‘Where are you going after this?’ And he’d say ‘I’m giving somebody a lesson,’” Trump added.

“I’d say, ‘You got to give it (professional golf) a shot. You got a real chance to be something special.’ ” Herman had tried pro golf for the first time in 2000, but he struggled on the Florida mini-tours and moved into the golf shop in 2004 in search of a steady paycheck. He gave lessons and sold clubs and clothes.

But with Trump’s stake, Herman finally advanced far enough through Q-School to earn a Web.com Tour spot in 2008. He played 114 events and finally won one. He moved up to the PGA Tour in 2011, but was 0-for-106 tournaments until Sunday. On the 72nd green at the Shell Open, Herman, 38, needed a twoputt from 20-feet for a win, a two-year tour exemption and the Masters invitation.

His former boss was in Wisconsin when he learned Herman was in contention. He immediately ordered the channel changed to NBC. “I mean those guys aren’t pushovers, so it was great see him going down the last fairway,” Trump recalled. “That last drive, the last three shots, that wasn’t an easy two-putt, it’s up on a hill and something like 20 feet. But he did great. I’m not surprised.”

Herman, despite being ranked 191st in the world at that moment, was surprisingly calm. It wasn’t until he’d sealed the deal that he let his emotions show. But there was a hint how much he wanted the win at No. 16, where he chipped in from 40 feet for birdie, turning what had been a weakness – his short game – into a strength and pumping his fists.

‘You would never guess he’s 69’ Joliet man creates and maintains personal plan for wellness

OLIET – At age 69, Glenn Moore of Joliet is known to friends as the “gym ambassador.”

Moore works out more than two hours a day and earned a T-shirt for climbing a machine at Presence Inwood Athletic Club in Joliet that equals the steps needed to scale the real Mount Everest – 29,000 feet, said Mary Magee-Huth, fitness coordinator.

He even claims to have beaten colon cancer without chemotherapy through a combination of surgery to remove the tumor and alternative medicine after the surgery.

Magee-Huth said Moore is in “phenomenal shape.” That includes his physical health, Magee-Huth said, as well as his attitude and smile.

“You would never guess he’s 69,” Magee-Huth said. “He come in every day and works out. He has a passion for being healthy and all that goes with it. You can tell he truly enjoys it.”

What’s Moore’s secret? Well, for one, Moore said he hasn’t eaten red meat in more than 30 years. Instead, he chooses broiled salmon or chicken. He steers clear of fried, fatty and fast food.

“My grandson doesn’t even ask me about McDonald’s anymore,” Moore said.

“He knows Grandpa’s not going to get it.”

Moore rarely eats bread and won’t eat anything white: rice, potatoes, onions, etc.

He doesn’t drink coffee or pop. Any juice is freshly squeezed. Mostly, Moore drinks water and smoothies made with protein powder and fresh fruit.

“I eat beans for protein, and I don’t eat anything from a can,” Moore said. “Once I started changing my diet, I threw out all the canned goods.”

Four times a year, Moore said he does a “master cleanse,” where he only drinks a water mixture. To the water, Moore adds maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne pepper, all in carefully measured amounts.

“The maple syrup is food, the lemon juice is your cleansing agent and the cayenne pepper stimulates the blood,” Moore said. “I drink nothing but that for 10 days.”

To transition back to food, Moore switches to juice and then to homemade vegetable soup.

It’s not the journey Moore anticipated when he exchanged his poor eating and sedentary habits for good nutrition, personal trainers and gyms. He only

“I felt like exercise would boost my morale,” Moore said. “I started doing cardio, the treadmill, the elliptical and working with weights.”

Moore even said he skipped chemotherapy after he had a cancerous tumor surgically removed from his colon 11 years ago, using American pawpaw root instead.

According to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the main compounds of this root – acetogenins – have cancer-killing properties in lab studies, but mixed results in mice. The plant extract is used in pesticides and anti-lice shampoo.

But Moore’s jog down the alternative medicine road doesn’t mean he’s against traditional medicine.

When chiropractic treatments didn’t relieve persistent back pain, Moore said he consulted with a back specialist at Silver Cross Hospital and learned he had a problem in his facet joints, which is being treated with low doses of steroid injections.

Furthermore, any time Moore shares his colon cancer story, he stresses one key point: “Go get that colonoscopy.” He doesn’t advise against chemotherapy or any mainstream cancer treatment.

“Chemotherapy has its place. I don’t have anything against chemotherapy.

Take it, if that’s your choice,” Moore said.

“The main thing is research and find out what’s best for you.”

Morris Hospital welcomes new vice Joliet Catholic raises more than $35,000 at St. Baldrick’s event president of professional services MORRIS – Tom Dohm, of New Lenox, is the new vice president of professional services at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

In this role, Dohm has senior leadership responsibility for emergency medical services/emergency management, environmental services, facilities, materials services/purchasing, nutrition services, and safety/security.

A n a t i v e o f t h e Tom Dohm south suburbs, Dohm most recently served as vice president of support services at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago. He was also responsible for short- and long-term planning related to construction, as well as overall safe-

ty of the campus.

His more than 25 years of healthcare leadership experience also includes chief operating officer at Provident Hospital of Cook County and numerous leadership roles with Oak Forest Hospital over a span of two decades.

Dohm holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Governors State University in University Park and a master’s in business administration from Olivet Nazarene University. As a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Dohm is also board certified in Healthcare Management.

Joliet Catholic came together March 9 during its annual Spring Fling week and raised more than $35,000 during its St. Baldrick’s event. Participants included JCA students and staff members, while area hairdressers and barbers volunteered their time to shave heads for the worthy cause. Six current JCA staff members and 14 students “braved the shave,” enticing others to raise money in support of St. Baldrick’s. Junior Nick Sandora was this year’s top fundraiser, bringing in more than $21,000. Four additional JCA students, Ethan Goolsby, Jared Olson, Jacob Mihelich, and Walter Osterberger, all raised more than $1,000 individually.

Tools help those with arthritis Dear Dr. K: Age and arthritis have done a number on my hands. I’d like to continue cooking, eating and dressing independently, but it’s getting harder. Any advice?

Dear Reader: Many years ago, I had a patient who taught me the importance of what I’m about to tell you. She was in her late 70s, retired, widowed and lived alone.

She had been extremely independent all of her life. However, with age her dexterity and fine motor skills had diminished. In addition, the combination of arthritis and a small stroke had made cooking and grooming difficult.

One day she came into my office and sat down, in her usual regal way. I asked her how she was doing, and she suddenly burst into tears: “I’m useless, just useless.”

I referred her to a physical and occupational therapist, who told her (and me) about a variety of tools available to help perform everyday activities. Indeed, there are more such tools today than there were then. Most cost less than $50 or $100, and they are widely available in drugstores, medical supply stores and online.

I spoke to geriatrician Dr. Suzanne Salamon, an instructor at Harvard Medical School, about devices she recommends to her patients: • Eating tools. Weighted eating utensils – forks, knives and spoons – make it easier for people with hand tremors to get food to their mouths. The weight cuts down on the amount of hand shaking, which keeps food on the utensil. If your wrist or arm dexterity is diminished, try curved eating utensils, which are twisted to adjust to your grip.

• Skid-control plates and bowls have high sides and rubber rings or bottoms. These enable you to push food against the side of the bowl or plate to load your fork or spoon.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Cooking tools. If your grip strength isn’t what it once was, a bottle or jar opener makes a big difference. One-handed tools also are helpful if a stroke or injury prevents two-handed cooking and food prep. For example, a one-handed vegetable brush with suction cups on the bottom allows you to rub vegetables against it to clean them.

• Household tools. One of the most helpful household tools is a grabber. This long-handled tool has pincers at the end to grab anything that’s out of reach. I used one of these when I was recovering from hip replacement surgery and could not bend down much. It really helped.

You also can buy large covers to fit over doorknobs or lamp switches, making them easier to turn. Or buy book holders that let you read hands-free.

• Personal grooming. If it’s difficult for you to reach down, behind or above your body, it can be difficult to groom yourself.

Look for long-handled and curved versions of hairbrushes and combs, toenail clippers and shoehorns. Substitute an electric toothbrush for your manual one. And look into the many tools that are available to help with dressing, such as zipper pulls and shirt buttoners.

Several of these tools restored my patient’s ability to be independent and her self-confidence. I’m sure they can help you.

At the bridge table, negative doubles are made to counteract intervention, a most worthwhile ambition.

Look at the North hand. What would you do after South opens one diamond, and West overcalls one spade?

Decades ago, double was for penalty. Then, North would probably have bid three no-trump. But after a spade lead, the contract would have had no chance, going down two. Now, though, North can make a negative double to show four hearts (the unbid major) and some eightplus points (or six or seven if he really likes his hand). He might hold five or even six hearts and too few points to respond two hearts, but that is rare. South, over his partner’s double, shows his heart support, and four hearts should be reached.

After West leads the spade queen, how should the play proceed?

South should see four potential losers: one spade (on the third round), two hearts and one club.

But there are discards available on diamonds.

Declarer takes the first trick on the board and runs the heart 10.

West wins with the queen and perseveres with spades. Now South must change tack. He wins in the dummy, cashes the diamond ace, overtakes the diamond queen with his king, and plays the diamond jack, discarding the spade seven from the dummy.

Then declarer leads another trump.

Shortly thereafter, he will claim, having lost only two hearts and one club.
