Joliet Township High School – Joliet The first public school law in Illinois was the Free School Act of 1825. This act provided that common schools should be established in each county of the State, which were to be free and open to all white citizens between the ages of 5 and 21.

This law was amended two years later because some families that did not have children did not want to pay taxes to support the school. Because this weakened the law of 1825, few public schools were established.

As Illinois was settled in the first half of the 19th century, schools were often established in each settlement. These schools were not free-tax supported schools but rather “subscription” schools where parents paid to have their children enrolled.

In 1845, a Free School Act was passed in Illinois that gave voters the opportunity to meet together to determine the possibility of levying taxes for the support of building and/or repairing schoolhouses.

When the third Constitution of the State of Illinois was approved in 1870, Article VIII stated, “the General Assembly shall provide a thorough and efficient system of free schools, whereby all the children of the State shall receive a good common school education.” With this article, it was mandated that all counties in the state must organize elementary school districts.

In Joliet, two of the early school buildings in the township that were erected as a result of this act were located downtown on Webster Street, between Chicago and Scott streets. These structures were known as the Roosevelt building and the Central building.

The Roosevelt School served as the city’s public high school until a new building on Jefferson Street was constructed in 1901. Central Junior High closed in 1956.

By 1899, overcrowded conditions prompted voters to establish a new township high school and approve the purchase of a new site at the corner of Jefferson Street and Eastern Avenue. In 1901, the Joliet Township High School was open to the hundreds.

limestone and, for decorative detailing, Bedford stone was used on the exterior.

The building’s interior included marble floors and stairs, arch-shaped doorways and custom crafted solid oak doors.

The Adam Groth Company of Joliet was the general contractor for the new high school. Much of the stone that Groth used came from Indiana and Minnesota as well as Joliet quarries.

Additions and extensions were added to the high school over the years, including a 2,100-seat auditorium. Over 100 years later, the building still operates as a school and is commonly known as Joliet Central High School. The high school building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

First Romeoville Beer & Bacon Fest highlights southwest suburban establishments

mmallory@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Assorted craft beers and bacon-infused dishes came together Saturday in Romeoville for what could only be described by those in attendance as a perfect marriage.

“I was surprised Romeoville is having something like this,” said Bobby Brooks of Joliet. “The bacon got me.”

Twelve Chicago-area bacon vendors and 10 beer vendors – most proud to call the southwest suburbs home – gathered at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Events Center from 6 to 10 p.m. for the first Romeoville Beer & Bacon Festival.

Pollyanna Brewing Company of Lemont, Metal Monkey Brewing of Romeoville and Banging Gavel Brews of Orland Park were a few local brewers serving guests 2-ounce samples. Bacon stations included Fat Ricky’s of Romeoville, Stone City Saloon of Romeoville, Sovereign of Plainfield and Juliet’s of Joliet.

with her husband. She was impressed with this one, especially considering how new it is.

“They really did a great job planning it,” Cizek said. “Usually there’s beer all over and a few food trucks. But this is a really nice combination. It’s one of the best [item] mixes we’ve seen.”

Event organizer Lee Fry said the mix of establishments allowed attendees to find unique pairings from up-and-coming brewers and bacon dishes they’ve never tried before.

“We wanted to do something different,” Fry said. “A lot of festivals just do beer.”

The location was a perk for many area residents. Cizek said it was great to not have to drive to the city for an event. At the end of her 20-minute drive, she didn’t have to worry about finding a parking spot. In addition to supporting local establishments, people were in good spirits.

“When you put beer and bacon together, it’s hard to not be in a good mood,” Cizek said.

“It’s just everyday people who share an interest in indulging in these beers and restaurants,” Brooks said.

Flossmoor Station Brewing Company was in attendance with both a bacon and beer offering. The featured bacon item, chef Dave Noreen said, was his signature bacon lager cheese dip handed out with pretzels. The sauce is made with Flossmoor’s zephyr lager, applewood smoked bacon and jalapeños.

Coming to the fest wasn’t just about promoting the restaurant, however.

Noreen said it was great to get out and mingle with bacon and beer enthusiasts.

“Every once in a while the chef has to get out of the kitchen,” Noreen said.

“It feels good to be out here.”

Near the entrance, McWethy’s Tavern of Romeoville was well-represented with a large picture frame full of thick, dangling sugar-and-spice bacon strips. Executive chef Mark Angeles, who called it “bacon art,” also made bacon-wrapped Brussels sprouts with an apricot rosemary glaze and toasted pecans.

Angeles said it was important to give support to PAWS Chicago, which received a portion of the proceeds Saturday, and show what the restaurant has to offer.

“We want to get out in the community and show we’re a part of it,” Angeles said. “We’re not hiding.”

Fry said Romeoville Mayor John Noak and Assistant Village Manager Dawn Caldwell were helpful in making the event happen. The venue is owned by the village of Romeoville.

Joliet Park District still waiting on grant for 80-acre woods

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The fire at the old Hoberg house last week was a reminder of the stymied deal that eventually will add 80 acres of woods to Pilcher Park.

The abandoned and now burned down house is in the middle of the woods owned by the Illinois Audubon Society but slated to become Joliet Park District property once the state lets go of a $1.4 million grant.

Matt Pehle, interim executive director at the park district, said park officials do not believe they will lose the grant amid the state’s current financial problems. The grant is actually federal money that passes through the state.

“I’ll be glad when the transaction is done, and the Illinois Audubon Society can put that money back into our acquisition fund.”

“We’re not worried about them releasing it to us,” Pehle said. “It’s just going to take a little longer.”

So far, it’s taken more than a year.

But the Illinois Audubon Society confirmed again Friday that it will hold the land for the Joliet Park District until the grant comes through.

The society now leases the property to the park district at $1 a year.

But the park district’s ability to use

the land is limited. Pehle said there is a plan for a trail going into the Hoberg woods, but the park district would need to own the land first.

The Illinois Audubon Society acquired the woods for $1.9 million with the help of a $1.4 million donation from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation.

Tom Clay, executive director of the society, said the organization wants

to see the woods in the hands of the park district. But it also looks forward to payment so it can use the money to buy more land for preservation.

“I’ll be glad when the transaction is done, and the Illinois Audubon Society can put that money back into our acquisition fund,” Clay said.

Meanwhile, another state grant that was to provide $750,000 for restoration and improvements at the Bird Haven Greenhouse at Pilcher Park is likely gone for good, Pehle said.

The park district was ready to go out for bids on the work, when Gov. Bruce Rauner froze grants slated for local parks.

“That is a state grant,” Pehle said.

“That was put on indefinite hold. We don’t ever expect to get that.”

Camp is a safe, fun place for children with burns In 2013, there were 126,035 children ages 19 and younger seen in emergency rooms for fire and burn injuries, according to Safe Kids Worldwide.

As a way to help empower children with burn injuries, the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance organizes Camp “I Am Me” each year for children 8 to 16 who have experienced a burn injury that required outpatient treatment or hospitalization.

The camp is an opportunity for the children to be in a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere, build their self-esteem and enjoy all kinds of great activities.

Some of the events and activities include archery, boating, campfires, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, fishing, obstacle course, horseback riding, swimming, a talent show and woodworking. There also are special workshops offered with the needs of a young burn survivor in mind.

The staff and volunteers include medical personnel, burn unit nurses, psychologists and IFSA-trained counselors.

Local fire departments, including Channahon, Minooka, Troy and Plainfield (just to name a few) do what they can to help raise funds for this worthy cause.

Channahon, Minooka and Troy join forces every year for an annual chili cook-off, alternating the event at the departments, with proceeds going toward the camp, Channahon Chief John Petrakis said.

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky Channahon has been involved with the camp for at least nine years, starting when Plainfield Fire Chief David Riddle was chief in Channahon. Riddle has been on the board of IFSA for all these years.

“It’s such a refreshing and emotional engagement with these children, just to see them be themselves with other kids with similar challenges,” Riddle said.

Camp “I Am Me” is held at the YMCA Camp Duncan in Ingleside. Over the years, IFSA has been able to make some improvements to the camp to accommodate the needs of the children, including a huge garage on-site to store all needed supplies and equipment, and provide air conditioning in the cabins.

“What a difference it makes for a child who suffered burns to be able to sleep in some comfort,” Riddle said.

Everything is included in the weeklong camp at no cost to campers, including meals, transportation, lodging and activities. That is all possible by donations from donors, supporters and volunteers.

The garage is stocked full of stuff – if a child needs a pair of socks, a swimsuit, a toothbrush or anything else, the camp

‘I’m the only parent left’ Plainfield woman bravely fought aggressive cancer after the death of her husband from cancer

PLAINFIELD – When Jennifer Martello answered the phone a year ago, it was her sister Natalie Martello calling from a quick care.

“They think I have mono,” she said.

Thirty minutes later, Natalie called Jennifer back. She didn’t have mononucleosis: The Plainfield resident had an aggressive leukemia.

“I thought, ‘No way could this be happening,’ ” said Jennifer, of Morris.

That was April 4, 2015. On Dec. 5, 2014, Natalie lost her husband, Gary, 52, to melanoma. Natalie and the couple’s four children – Eileen, 18, Teddy, 13, William, 10, and Charlie, 9 – were still grieving Gary’s death.

Natalie went by ambulance from quick care to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. She began treatment the next day. Over the next month, Natalie had two forms of chemotherapy.

In July, Natalie’s brother, Michael Hartmann of Chicago, donated stem cells for a transplant. Because of her fragile immune system, Natalie went to the Crest Hill home of her sister, Kathleen Maugeri, for the 100-day recovery period.

On Day 90, Natalie was out of remission. On Dec. 18, Natalie had a second stem cell transplant. She was 43 when she died Dec. 30.

Through everything, Natalie never complained.

“She always said, ‘It could be worse. It could be one of the kids,’ ” Jennifer said.

Kathleen said Natalie’s battle was more for her children than for herself.

“The Sunday before she died, she was cracking jokes,” Kathleen said.

As an adult, Natalie was a patient mother, Kathleen said. Jennifer said Natalie showed her children the importance of giving back by donating to various organizations, including the American Cancer Society.

Natalie’s main hobby was reading, Jennifer said, especially books relating to self-help.

“She wanted to better herself all the time,” Jennifer said. “She wanted to be more organized – although how can you be organized with four kids – a better mom, better at work, smarter.”

Although it’s hard to determine when Natalie realized her fight was ending, Kathleen and Jennifer said Natalie seemed serene during her last couple weeks.

And then something happened that told them Natalie knew.

When bringing Natalie home one night in December, Jennifer noticed a package had arrived with Natalie’s name on it. Jennifer asked Natalie if she wanted to open it, but Natalie shrugged off the question by saying, “It’s just a dress I ordered.”

“A couple days later we opened the box,” Jennifer said. “It was a black dress.”

SPRINGFIELD – After four months hauling cash from Illinois driver’s license facilities without payment from the state, an armored-truck company walked last fall, leaving the job to police officers who work for the secretary of state.

Montreal-based GardaWorld’s trucks started rolling again after the state paid the overdue $79,000 amid a record budget standoff. But that only covered work through last Friday, so almost as quickly as the mess was resolved, the state could find itself in the same predicament again.

While the state’s 10-month deadlock has forced deep spending cuts on human services and education programs, the armored car foul-up has raised security and efficiency implications for the state’s handling of many thousands of dollars.

Security experts vary on the safety risk of having state officers working in such unfamiliar terrain. But they speak in concert on the inefficiency of the state diverting them from regular duties so they can run deposit errands.

Secretary of State Jesse White’s office confirmed to The Associated Press that pairs of armed police officers made the pickups during off-hours for 15 weeks starting Oct. 23 while GardaWorld sat it out. White spokesman Henry Haupt said it was the “safest and best option” – even when considering it cost $30,000 in overtime pay.

Lawmakers fear that continued cutting of corners without some resolution of the budget mess could lead to repeated debacles like the one at the driver’s license facilities.

“We will see more dramatic cases of such events happening as we start to approach the summer months without a budget,” said Rep. Sam Yingling, a Grayslake Democrat and vice chairman of the State Government Administration Committee. “Greater risk to the public interest and to public safety.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who control the General Assembly blame each other for the stalemate.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said the GardaWorld situation “is another example of why Illinois needs a truly balanced budget.”

MUNSTER, Ind. – A developer said its proposal for an $8 billion, 278-mile rail line from Indiana to Wisconsin would greatly relieve Chicago-area freight congestion.

The rail line could handle 110 trains a day and would be the largest railroad project in the U.S. since 1911, according to Great Lakes Basin Transportation.

Great Lakes president Jim Wilson told The (Munster) Times that Chicago-area freight traffic could increase by 50 percent in the next four decades.

Officials said it takes a train three days to get from Los Angeles to Chicago – and then another three days to get through packed Windy City terminals.

Wilson said the tracks could save trains passing through Chicago as much as 24 hours each way, improving the shipping of frozen foods or produce. As many as 25 percent of the trains entering Chicago are just passing through.

“It certainly goes against the grain of incremental improvements at low cost,” said Joseph Schwieterman, director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University. “But it could save shippers a lot of money.”

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is asking federal and Cook County authorities to look into an outburst of racial slurs that have been broadcast over police department radio frequencies.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that in a letter to U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, Emanuel said the transmissions were made by an unauthorized private citizen using noncity-issued equipment.

The Chicago Police Department began its own investigation after a male voice was heard March 13 on a police frequency using obscenities and racial slurs.

In his letter, Emanuel said there have since been three more instances of unauthorized people broadcasting racial slurs over police frequencies.

Emanuel said the language used and the racial intolerance expressed “do not represent the values of our police department or our city.”

He was born Dec. 5, 1988, in Joliet, to Ramona Weston and Brad Johnson, Weston graduated from Minooka High School in 2007 and then went on to join the U.S. Navy as a Submariner in 2009. He was married to Miranda Nicole July 18, 2013. Weston enjoyed his Naval career, traveled the world and he was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Preceded in death by his grandparents, Leonard and Irene Weston and Donald and Carol Johnson; and one aunt.

Weston is survived by his wife, Miranda Nicole Johnson; mother, Ramona Weston (Kenneth Horvat); two brothers, Seth Swanson and Cort Swanson of Minooka; his father, Brad (Dixie) Johnson of Crest Hill; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and naval family. JOLIET – A session is scheduled for Tuesday in Joliet to plan for an upcoming initiative aimed at engaging local communities.

During the past two years, more than 40,000 Chicago-area residents have come together to participate in The Chicago Community Trust’s On the Table. This annual forum is designed to elevate civic conversation, foster new relationships and create a unifying experience across the region, according to a news release.

This year, On the Table conversations are scheduled for May 10, and

organizers are looking for local residents who might want to host their own event on that day.

Joliet Junior College and The Community Foundation of Will County are hosting a planning session from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the auditorium in the U Conference Center at Joliet Junior College, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. Information will be shared with residents interested in hosting an On the Table event May 10.

The Community Foundation of Will County, as a geographic affiliate of the Trust, is co-hosting the session with the Chicago Community Trust.

The sessions aim to connect individuals and communities of diverse perspectives and backgrounds, according to the news release.

Amtrak investigators inspect the deadly train crash Sunday in Chester, Pa. The Amtrak train struck a piece of construction equipment just south of Philadelphia, causing a derailment.

Amtrak train derails in Pa.; two workers killed The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHESTER, Pa. – An Amtrak train struck a piece of heavy equipment just south of Philadelphia on Sunday, causing a derailment that killed two Amtrak workers and sent more than 30 passengers to hospitals, authorities said.

Train 89 was heading from New York to Savannah, Georgia, at about 8 a.m. when it hit the equipment that was on the track in Chester, about 15 miles outside Philadelphia, officials said. The impact derailed the lead engine of the train that was carrying more than 300 passengers and seven crew members.

Chester Fire Commissioner Travis Thomas said two people were killed. A National Transportation Safety Board official confirmed that one was the operator of the equipment. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Amtrak board Chairman Anthony Coscia told him the other person killed was a supervisor and both were Amtrak employees.

The Delaware County medical examiner’s office said no information would be released until after autopsies Monday.

NTSB investigator Ryan Frigo said at an evening news conference that the event data recorder and forward-facing and inward-facing video from the locomotive have been recovered.

He said the locomotive engineer was among those taken to hospitals. Officials said earlier that none of the injuries was deemed life-threatening.

Schumer said it’s unclear whether the equipment was being used for regular main-

tenance, which usually is scheduled Sunday mornings because there are fewer trains on the tracks, or whether it was clearing debris from high winds in the area overnight. But he said Amtrak has “a 20-step protocol” for having such equipment, described by Amtrak as a backhoe, on the track, and no trains are supposed to go on a track when equipment is present.

“Clearly this seems very likely to be human error,” Schumer said, calling for Amtrak to review its processes. “There is virtually no excuse for a backhoe to be on an active track.”

An Amtrak spokeswoman said in an email to The Associated Press that any information about the type of equipment on the track and why the train was using that track would have to come from the NTSB. She said any information about the two people killed, including what company they worked for, would have to come from the Delaware County medical examiner.

The company was posting alerts on its website, however, with updates on its service.

Amtrak said service on the Northeast Corridor between New York and Philadelphia began operating after an earlier suspension and limited service was restored between Wilmington, Delaware, and Philadelphia by Sunday afternoon.

Amtrak said Sunday night that it will operate regularly scheduled trains Monday, although there may be some delays on Acela Express, Northeast Regional and other services between Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware.

“Our guys competed both days,” said Steelmen coach Kevin Fitzgerald, whose team beat Plainfield Central, 6-2, in Thursday’s opening round. Don’t forget, the Wildcats entered that game sporting a 6-1 record.

“We get second place, our highest fin-

ish ever,” Fitzgerald said with a smile.

Then he added another positive: “I guess this means we get to host next year.”

The norm is for the top two finishers from the previous year to be hosts of opening-round and semifinal games, before everything shifts to Silver Cross Field for the place games.

“This was a tough one, but there were a lot of good things over the two games,” Fitzgerald said. “We beat a

The Tigers (3-2), under new coach Michael O’Shea, have allowed one goal in regulation in their five matches.

Kara Cipolle scored off a cross late in the opening half and Anessa Munoz connected in the initial minute of the final half following a long run. Sam Baloy posted her fourth shutout.

good team, a good program, in Plainfield Central. Our pitching started getting behind on the count against these guys (the Celtics), and they took advantage, which a good team will do.”

Providence (4-1) and Joliet Central (24-1) already had met in a nonconference game. When you are building a program and face a team as good as the Celtics, that sort of competition can be beneficial down the road.

“It was good for us to face them twice heading into the conference season,” Fitzgerald said. “I think Mark Smith (Providence’s coach) is one of the best coaches in the area, in the state of Illinois, heck, in the nation. They have pitching depth and depth offensively. They absolutely are capable of making a run at another state title.”

Smith has a program that is on top of the world, but he also can appreciate where Fitzgerald is with the Steelmen.

“When Kevin took the job, I knew he had been a great player and was a great kid,” Smith said. “(Providence assistant) Jason Vitas knew him and said he would do a good job with them because he really

“I was happy for Kevin (Fitzgerald) and Joliet Central that they got into the semis,” Ternik said. “The kids on both sides had fun in spite of the weather.

“This might be the coldest game ever,” Smith said, then added, “no, there was one colder at JJC when I was coaching there.”

As for snow, “It happens every once in a while,” Smith said. “When I was a player at JJC, we were in a regional one year, I believe it was on May 2, and it snowed then.”

“I love this tournament,” Smith said.

“I look forward to the coaches’ meeting every year, where I can talk baseball with some coaching friends who I don’t necessarily see that often during the season. It’s just a sign that baseball season is upon us.

“Our goal every year is to get into the championship game and be one of the hosts the next year. As long as this tournament goes on, Providence Catholic will love being in it.”

Ternik agrees.

“We enjoy hosting it,” he said. “Mark (Smith) and I played Joliet baseball growing up. This is a way for us to give back a little. It means a great deal to us.”

And it isn’t just Smith and Ternik.

How about the Providence parents who provided heaters to the Joliet Central dugout?

“We have a great group of parents,” Smith said. “They take care of anyone who comes here to play. That’s the thing about Providence, you are surrounded by great people.”

By ANDREW SELIGMAN CHICAGO – The Cubs come into the season with such high expectations that manager Joe Maddon came up with a slogan.

“Embrace the Target” is the motto.

And there’s no denying the bull’s-eye is there. The Cubs open one of their most anticipated seasons in years Monday night on the road against the Los Angeles Angels, boasting a lineup that appears loaded to contend for years to come behind young sluggers and a rotation anchored by reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta.

Many heartbreaks aside, the Cubs are eyeing another postseason run after a 97-win season and a trip to the NLCS – a big statement for a franchise that has not won the World Series since 1908.

But these aren’t the same old Cubs, not after a top-to-bottom overhaul orchestrated by president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and put in motion

by Maddon.

“Last year, I don’t think anyone really had a good sense of what to expect from the season,” general manager Jed Hoyer said. “Theo and I, I think we were excited to bring Joe in. We’d signed some free agents. Our young players were getting closer. But we didn’t have a really good sense of what to expect.

This year, I think we do.”

A year ago, most expected improvement from the Cubs after the hiring of Maddon and the signing of left-handed pitcher Jon Lester.

Instead, Arrieta was a shutdown ace, Kris Bryant bashed his way to the NL Rookie of the Year Award and other young sluggers such as Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber helped the Cubs slam the door on a run of five straight losing seasons.

Here are some things to look for as the Cubs try to build on last year’s run and maybe, just maybe, end the World Series drought that now stands at 108 years: NEW FACES: The Cubs have been busy ever since Dexter Fowler was called out on strikes, ending the NLCS in a four-game sweep by the New York Mets.

The Cubs took two players from NL Central champion and bitter rival St. Louis, signing three-time Gold Glove outfielder Jason Heyward ($184 million, eight years) and pitcher John Lackey ($32 million, two years). They also added two-time All-Star Ben Zobrist ($56 million, four years) and traded Starlin Castro to the New York Yankees for pitcher Adam Warren.

Playing after St. Louis and Pittsburgh started in the big league opener, Matt Shoemaker allowed two runs and three hits in five innings and struck out four in a 72-pitch outing. He was 2-2 with a 6.84 ERA in five starts and one relief appearance during the exhibition season.

MATCH THAT: The Cubs figure to have a deep rotation, particularly if Arrieta stays healthy.

The right-hander led the major leagues in wins while going 22-6 with a 1.77 ERA. OUTFIELD SHUFFLE: Maddon likes to juggle his lineup, and the re-signing of Fowler gave him some extra depth in the outfield.

He still can shift Heyward from right field to center on occasion in order to give some time to Jorge Soler, who also figures to form a sort of platoon in left with Schwarber.

NEXT STEP: Bryant (.275, 26 homers, 99 RBIs), Schwarber (16 homers, 43 RBIs), Soler (10 homers, 47 RBIs), Addison Russell (13 homers, 54 RBIs) and Javier Baez enjoyed varying degrees of success last year. The Cubs hope they can build on that.

Kane hat trick leads Blackhawks past Bruins, 6-4

CHICAGO – Patrick Kane not only did a number on the Boston Bruins, he reached some milestone numbers himself.

So did Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville.

Kane had three goals and an assist as Chicago raced to a six-goal lead in the second period before hanging on for a 6-4 victory over Boston on Sunday.

Kane’s scoring spree gave him 100 points for the first time in his nineyear career. The win was career No. 800 for Quenneville.

“A special day,” Kane said. “My 100th point on a hat-trick goal as well.

Pretty cool the way it happened. Just one of those nights where things are going in.”

Kane was clicking with linemates Artemi Panarin and Artem Anisimov early and often in the club’s fourth win it its last five games. Panarin had a goal and three assists, while Anisimov added a goal and two assists.

Quenneville said his 800th win was nerve-wracking as the Bruins fell short with a late comeback. But he

Jonathan Toews also scored for the Blackhawks, who won’t finish lower than third in the Central Division and will avoid a wild-card playoff seeding.

Kane’s second career regular-season hat trick – both this season – lifted him to 43 goals, the most for a Chicago player since Tony Amonte hit that mark in 1999-2000. He’s the first Blackhawk to reach 100 points since Jeremy Roenick had 107 in 1993-94.

Patrice Bergeron had two goals and an assist for the Bruins. He and David Pastrnak scored 11 seconds apart late in the second period. Bruins starting goalie Tuukka Rask was replaced early in the second after allowing a barrage of goals.

Brad Marchand scored on a deflection midway through the third to cut it to 6-4, but the Bruins couldn’t overcome Chicago’s early outburst.

Boston, with just two wins in its last nine games, remained one point behind Detroit and Philadelphia for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Pittsburgh beat the Flyers, 6-2, Sunday.

The Bruins have three games remaining, all at home, including one against Detroit on Thursday.

“With what’s at stake, we’ve got to be a lot better,” Bergeron said. “Focus is definitely what cost the game early on by making mistakes and giving them the space that they wanted and the plays that they wanted.”

Busch wins again for weekend sweep Jimmy Butler scores 25 points;

The Associated Press MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Kyle Busch pulled away on a restart with 11 laps to go and outran AJ Allmendinger to the finish for his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory at Martinsville Speedway, and a sweep of the two-race weekend.

Busch, who won for the first time in 31 starts at Martinsville in a truck race on the 0.526-mile oval on Saturday, dominated in the premier division in bright sunshine but cool temperatures that never let the track get quite as sticky as it normally does.

He led 352 laps, the most since Bobby Hamilton led 378 on April 20, 1998.

Allmendinger was second, followed

by Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon and Brad Keselowski.

The finish looked nothing like the leaderboard for most of the race, but Busch and teammate Matt Kenseth stayed out when a caution flew with 15 laps to go while the rest of the contenders pitted for fresher tires.

When the green flag flew, Busch sailed off, Allmendinger beat Kenseth

to the inside position and Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate got hung up on the outside and faded to a 15th-place finish.

It was a reversal of the events of the previous restart, with 34 laps to go, when Busch and Kenseth worked together.

That time, Busch restarted on the inferior outside, likely with an agreement that Kenseth would let him grab the top spot, and the two once again seemed to be the best cars.

But with 11 laps left, teammate deals were off, and Busch opted for the superior inside line.

Several other drivers who pitted started in the sixth row, or worse, of side-by-side racing, and while Larson and Keselowski recovered for top-five finishes, others got caught up in traffic and that allowed Dillon to hang on out of nowhere.

It was the second straight race on the oldest, shortest race in the premier series that was a huge disappointment for Kenseth.

Last spring, he crashed race leader Joey Logano with 46 laps to go, earning himself a two-race suspension.

Bulls hold off Bucks, 102-98

MILWAUKEE – Jimmy Butler scored 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting, Pau Gasol had 16 points and eight rebounds and the Chicago Bulls held off a second-half surge by the Milwaukee Bucks for a 102-98 win Sunday night.

Butler had six points and an assist in the final 3:45, when the Bucks had narrowed a 19-point deficit to one at 87-86.

Justin Holiday hit a tough jumper from the corner with 1:15 left and later grabbed a defensive rebound on a missed finger roll by Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo with 43.9 seconds to go.

The Bulls kept pace with Indiana for the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race. They were two games back of the Pacers when play started Sunday.

Antetokounmpo scored a career-high 34 points, while Jabari Parker added 24 for Milwaukee. The Bucks’ franchise cornerstones had their way

for much of the night with an array of drives and moves in the paint.

But Butler came up with the big plays in the clutch.

The former Marquette guard played before a friendly crowd at the Bradley Center, where the Golden Eagles have their home games. With point guard Derrick Rose sidelined, the offense went through Butler in the final minutes.

He followed a dunk with a driving layup with 3:04 left after the Bucks had drawn to within one. Butler found Holiday in the corner for his tough jumper for a four-point lead with 1:17 left.

The outcome delighted the healthy contingent of Bulls fans wearing red in the stands.

For a while in the second quarter, the Bulls looked as if they had never missed Rose or fellow injured starter Taj Gibson.

Coach Fred Hoiberg’s squad tracked down loose balls and hit open 3s, going 3 of 5 from behind the arc in the second.

INDIANAPOLIS – Morgan Tuck scored 21 points, and Breanna Stewart added 16 to help UConn (37-0) rout Oregon State, 80-51, in record fashion Sunday night in the women’s Final Four.

The Huskies are one victory away from a fourth consecutive national championship fulfilling Stewart’s goal.

A feat never accomplished before in women’s basketball.

If UConn does win on Tuesday night coach Geno Auriemma will have an 11th national championship moving him past vaunted UCLA men’s basketball coach John Wooden for the most all time.

The 29-point victory was the biggest margin of victory in women’s Final Four history, surpassing the 28-point win by Tennessee over Arkansas in 1998. It was UConn’s 74th consecutive

victory, the second-longest winning streak in NCAA and school history.

Tuck, a Bolingbrook High School graduate, was a big reason why UConn was able to build its big lead. Oregon State had 6-foot-6 center Ruth Hamblin guarding her for most of the first half.

The Beavers’ center was playing off her, daring Tuck to shoot from the outside. She had 10 of the Huskies first 15 points as UConn jumped out to a 15-6 advantage.

About the only negative for UConn was that freshman Katie Lou Samuelson broke the third metatarsal bone in her left foot in the first half. She missed practice Saturday because she was feeling under the weather. She started on Sunday, scoring seven points in the first half in 17 minutes. She didn’t come out of the locker room for the start of the second half, returning to the UConn bench early in the third quarter with a boot on her foot.

Syracuse women beat Washington

INDIANAPOLIS – Alexis Peterson scored 18 points and Brittney Sykes added 17 to help Syracuse roll past Washington, 80-59, and into the program’s first women’s national championship game.

The Orange (30-7) will face UConn, the three-time defending champions, on Tuesday night in Indianapolis. The Huskies set a semifinal round record with a 29-point victory over Pac-12 champion Oregon State in the early game.

Syracuse made it look almost as easy.

Washington (26-11) was led by Talia Walton, who had 29 points and made a Final Four record eight 3-pointers. The previous record of six was set by Katie Steding in the 1990 title game and matched in

2013 by Antonita Slaughter. Kelsey Plum, the nation’s No. 3 scorer, had 17 points.

But Syracuse rode its defense and took a 23-12 lead after one quarter, extended the lead to 39-20 midway through the second quarter and never let the Huskies get within single digits again.

When Washington cut the halftime deficit to 43-31, Peterson hit a 3 to start a 9-4 spurt that made it, 52-35.

When the Huskies got within 11, Syracuse used a 15-2 run to make it, 67-43. And when Washington closed to 72-59 midway through the fourth quarter, Sykes and Brianna Butler made back-to-back 3s to seal it.

Now the Orange will try to prevent their former Big East foe, UConn, from winning a fourth straight national title and finishing another perfect season.

However, by one year later, there was no clear benefit – sciatica was just as much a problem in those who received the epidural injections as those who did not.

Given the severity of your sciatica pain, it might be worth trying an epidural injection. But bear in mind this treatment may offer only a small and short-lasting benefit.

Talk to your doctor about whether simpler treatments such as exercises, physical therapy, compresses, painkilling medicines, chiropractic manipulation, massage, yoga or acupuncture might be worth considering.

Dear Dr. K: I suffer from sciatica, which has caused a lot of pain over the past six month. My doctor has recommended epidural injections, but I hear they have been disproven. Can you help me sort this out?

Dear Reader: Here’s an answer I’m sure you’ll find satisfying: It depends. It depends on what’s causing the sciatica and on which studies you believe.

Sciatica is a persistent aching or burning pain felt along the sciatic nerve.

The two sciatic nerves are the longest nerves in the body. They run from the lower back down through the buttocks and into each of the lower legs. The pain of sciatica can be severe. It can go away on its own, but for many people, sciatica is a chronic condition that keeps coming back.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is pinched, irritated or injured. Inflammation, arthritis or a displaced disk in the lower spine is often to blame.

Doctors commonly treat sciatica with epidural injections into the spine. (The word “epidural” refers to a particular area in the spine.) The injections contain a steroid, which reduces inflammation. The injections also can contain a long-lasting painkiller.

The different causes of sciatica may be one reason studies come to different conclusions. If a person’s sciatica is caused by inflammation rather than by arthritis, it may be more successfully treated by steroids – because the main effect of steroids is to reduce inflammation.

The best kind of study for any treatment procedure, such as an injection of medicines, is a randomized trial that includes a sham procedure. In this kind of study, every person gets an injection, but only some people, chosen at ran-

Students often ask which conventions they should use. I typically answer, “As few as possible.” But some, which we will study this week, I consider indispensable for a pair who competes in a club duplicate or would like to win in a friendly game with neighbors.

First, look at the North hand in today’s diagram. Partner opens one no-trump; what should North do?

In the old days, North would have responded three spades, showing five spades and game-going values (or six-plus spades and thoughts of a slam). After South had raised to four spades, East would have led the heart queen, and the defenders would have taken three hearts and one spade.

Now, though, transfer bids into the majors are ubiquitous. North responds two hearts, showing fiveplus spades and at least zero points.

Here, South has a close decision; he probably just completes the transfer with two spades, but he might jump to three spades, a superaccept indicating four-card support, a doubleton somewhere and a maximum (which is why, with only 15 high-card points, it is questionable). Over two spades, North rebids three no-trump, offering a choice of games, and South retreats to four spades. Over three spades by South, North raises to game.

Against four spades, West leads the diamond queen. Now South must resist the temptation to lead a trump, because East can win and shift with effect to the heart queen.

As no doubt you have noticed, South should immediately run clubs and discard two hearts from the dummy on the third and fourth rounds. Although East can ruff the last low, declarer has only three losers: two spades and one heart.
